Awesome meal and GREAT experience!

By Kelley M |

We had a local coupon to use and went out of our way last night to the Nite Hawk Cafe! Wow! The food was awesome and we loved every moment of our time with Kenny, our server, who was entertaining and extremely helpful! Although this restaurant isn't anywhere near our neighborhood, we will definitely go back! Best steak we've had in a long time (think Ruth Chris!) and the prices can't be beat!

Wouldn't feed the meatloaf to my dog

By Bigruss57 |

We visited this diner in April for dinner after arriving in Portland that afternoon. Decor was typical diner style with booths etc. We were seated quickly with friendly staff. One of us ordered a rib eye steak, baked potato, corn and garlic bread with side salad. I had what was claimed to be meatloaf with corn and allegedly mashed potato, with a rice/tomato/mexican type soup. While the steak apparently tasted OK, it wasn't rib eye as claimed, although the rest of that meal was OK. As for the meatloaf, the taste of this product really fails me. I can think of several synonyms but cannot print them here. The meat was a glutenous pureed re-constituted mass. The mashed potato I think was leftover from a nearby bricklaying job. As for the gravy.I think the cook (I refuse to say chef), assaulted the the packet mix gravy into a brown sludge resembling something a baby produces. This meal was truly bad and I can only urge people NEVER to order this unless you wish your taste buds murdered. This truly was the worst meal I have had in my memory and I wouldn't feed it to my dog. Whether or not this was a bad night for the meatloaf I do not know, but all can say is eat it at your own peril. As said staff and service was fine. It really was just the meatloaf that was abhorrent.

Been around forever!

If you are looking for a new trendy restaurant, this is not it! The Nite Hawk is very old and the booths inside look it. Fancy food? No! Lots of food? Yes! They have daily specials on a signboard outside every day, the restaurant closes at eight, so don't be late or you will end up in the bar. On Restaurant.com? Look for discounts there - you can use one per month.

okay breakfast

Bacon and eggs, breakfast - a decent place, decent service, could be anywhere, no special Portland flavor

Great old fashioned diner food

Classic old school diner. My omelette and hash browns were great. Love the sign outside and that it is right on the yellow max line. Plan to return to the pub portion to watch a game.

Good diner food and a lounge

By Lanny C |

Great food at a reasonable price. Everything from meat loaf to prime rib and breakfast is served all day. The restaurant part is small, but the same food is served next door in the lounge. The wait staff are very personable and attentive making the dining experience even better. The place has quite a quirky history. Worth dropping in for a hearty meal or a cocktail.

Great, attentive service and I loved the grilled oysters.

Breakfast

By Chris H |

It’s quite plain looking outside so when we walked in to grab a coffee we were amazed at the decor. We were served a perfectly cooked breakfast in minutes (even though it was busy). The staff were super friendly, the coffee kept coming. We will be back.

$2.50 beer from 10pm to midnight

I love this place cause it's very close to where I live, the bartender is super nice. Good food and good drinks.

Feeling Hungry?

By Eric H |

From breakfast to dinner, this place satisfied our palate. You have your typical bacon and eggs for breakfast straight to home made meatloaf and mashed potatoes for dinner. In addition. Nothing hoity-toity here! But the wait staff is very friendly and engages in conversation. Very relaxed and love the old style and feel. We'll return again.

Old venue - not much changed!

By Mikpar |

The bar seems to be the favorite spot for most of the people whose cars are filling the small parking lot. This is within fifty feet of the southbound MAX station. Been going there, off and on, since the 1960's. Same family still owns it. They have daily specials posted outside. Menu is not adventurous, but portions are pretty good. They honor Restaurant.com vouchers for a very inexpensive meal. Food is served pretty fast and selection is classic American.

mediocre

We ate breakfast there one morning. The food was just okay, nothing special. Didn't choose to eat there again.

Nice Local Bar w/Good Food

By 54449girl |

I was only to the bar side, not the cafe side. I liked this bar for the mellow vibe and the fact that I could get dinner, a drink, and play slots and pool. Food was good and reasonably priced. I would definitely return!

sorry I stopped at the Nite Hawk

The food was pretty bad and drinks were crappy but the bar tender had nice manners. I had an upset stomach when I left and I have a strong gut. I will never go back there again,

Great place for a good quick relaxing breakfast.

I went here three times for breakfast in which each time I was nicely satisfied. The breakfasts are tasty good and quick. I got the Eggs Benedict, a waffle/egg/ham special and also a biscuits/gravy/ham special. I loved them all. The wait staff is friendly and responsive. Homey atmosphere too. I recommend it.

Classic Diner

By Jessica M |

I have been to the Cafe twice and can definitely recommend it for its classic diner menu. The seating is limited, but the staff is great and the food hits the spot when looking for home-style cooking.

Excellent service!

By FeltGuy |

Our group meets every Thursday for breakfast somewhere in the greater Metro area. Nite Hawk had a table for 12 set up in the bar. An "old school" waitress took our orders, delivered our food hot off the grill, and gave us separate tickets - all without error! We'll be back !

Comfort food in a friendly setting

By TouristInTuscany |

We chose this small restaurant for dinner as it was just a block from our motel. The menu is not inventive but all of our meals (fish and chips; fried chicken; quesadillas) were good. Even better was the welcoming atmosphere- the kind of long established place that is hard to come by. Most of the patrons were regulars who chatted amiably with the server. Even though we were not from the neighborhood, we tourists were treated to the same hospitality. Highly recommend!

pretty average and not trying to be anything but average. Great place for your average guy, gal, who owns their own poo

pretty average and not trying to be anything but average. Great place for your average guy, gal, who owns their own pool cue, because the place has a big back room for pool players where they'll crank up the juke box. And they often have tournaments here, so check out their schedule for gamesmanship affairs if you are just a beginner or not pool-serious and devoted forever. Burgers are good, breakfast is good. Service is good, although not too ambitious. Location is great, on the MAX line, for folks that don't want to drive. This place has been around forever. It ain't goin nowhere, from several perspectives, and it appears that the locals like it just fine that way.

old time diner is great

By Teresa M |

we biked to the nite hawk for lunch yesterday....i had a pacifico, and my partner had the bloody mary....next, i had the dinner salad and tuna fish salad...she had the veggie omelet and a hotcake...the drinks and food were excellent..the staff is real friendly and funny...the cozyness inside and diner feel are fabulous..thx so much

hot breakfast here

By Ashlandbuck |

We stayed at a motel nearby and just came in here as it is close by. Lots of cars in the parking lot, but not so many people in the cafe part where we had an average breakfast with average service. We didn't figure out the part about all the cars until we told our adult kids where we'd been. Apparently Nite Hawk has a colorful reputation.

Bar Food Excellence

By andrew332 |

A Portland legendary bar with great food anytime of the day. Throw in some interesting characters from the neighborhood and you'll have a great time at the Nite Hawk. Need a good drink? Think Nite Hawk. Pool tournaments on great tables are held weekly. Try the meatloaf which is awesome!

Charming Retro Cafe With An Awesome Neon Sign

By RSNN |

I was riding the Max Light Rail on my way to the Paul Bunyon station when I spotted the distinctive sign for Nite Hawk Cafe and Lounge. When i returned it was after dusk and that neon sign was just too good to pass up. I got off at the stop right next to it at N Rosa Parks. The door indicated that this cafe has been around since 1931. And as a cafe it had a nice classic look to it. Comfortable and friendly. I walked up to the counter and sat down. Ordered a coffee and a warm piece of apple pie. It was great to relax and enjoy the classic look of a old style cafe. After I finished, I walked around to the Lounge to see what they was like inside. it was spacious. Had three pool takes and several video poker machines. The pool tables were being used for a tournament. So I had a pint and watched this for a while. And played a little video poker. A very nice place to stop in for a bite to eat. And just enjoy the atmosphere. And the smiling faces of happy folks dining there. Reminds me of the places I used to see all the time in the late 50s and early 60s. Very nostalgic seeing this place. And it even has public transportation that goes right to its front door, too!

Great breakfast - County Omelet Special

By anilif |

I took the family to try the Nite Hawk today, it was about 10 o'clock on Saturday & super busy! The waiter saw us come in and asked the gentleman who came in right in front of us to move to a counter seat so we got a seat right away. The service stayed excellent like that, the entire way through. I never had to wait for coffee, they were always back with a refill before I had an empty cup. The food took over 40 minutes once the order was placed, but as I mentioned, they were packed. I had the Country Omelet Special and it was excellent!!

Home style meals.........

in a cafe style restaurant. serves are adequate and reasonably priced. The best part about this place is the delightful waiter. Attached to a bar it's a convenient one stop spot when traveling .

Always great!

By Mrsteacherlady |

I have been to this restaurant many times over the years and it is always consistently good. All day breakfast and lunch and full dinners. There are usually daily specials, but I always seem to order the same thing each time I go. There is an old school feel to the place and well as the food. There is always pie on offer too, but I am so full after eating here that I couldn't even think of having pie. They have the best thick fries in town and are swapped in for hash browns if you ask for them. The dining room is small, but I always like to sit at the counter. There is a bar area as well, but I haven't ever been to that side of the building, so have no comment. The MAX stops right outside the door (the yellow line) and there is a small parking lot for cars on the corner of Interstate and Rosa Parks Way. As with most of Portland, street parking is getting harder and harder to come by so be patient in finding a place to park. The dining room shuts at 9pm, so it's not late night place.
