Very nice Japanese food. We enjoyed the sesame calamari and the dragon roll, both very good. The fried rice with shrimp was excellent as well as the lichy sorbete. Edamame was not very good, cold and missing salt. Other than that, excellent food and service.

The restaurant is contemporary, nice atmosphere. Loved the sushi roll, rainbow roll. Wok meal (General Tsao) was also very good. Hard to choose, everything on the menu sounded good.

The food was excellent The staff was at tentative without being annoying. I was very pleased and will return. The location is extremely convenient to the Mag Mile.

We live in the same building as Niu and have gone multiple times. Every time, I promise myself, never again. But about once a year I succumb to laziness - and am disappointed all over again. Overall, I prefer to leave reviews when I have something positive to say - as you can see from my many other reviews. But I just have to warn all you tourists about this place. It’s awful. Walk 2 blocks over to Blaze pizza and have a decent and inexpensive meal. Or if you have more time and $$, walk down the street to Carson’s for a decent steak. Or over to Kanela club for a good breakfast. The details: This time we had the Vegetarian Rice Paper Spring Rolls. It was mainly lettuce in loose rolls. So loose they would not even hold up to being picked up. Lettuce just crumbled apart in our fingers. If the other vegetables listed on the menu were in these rolls, we didn’t find them. We also had the Tofu Yakitori. The tofu tasted like dishwater. The noodles were so bland that I was diving for the sriracha sauce - and I’m not a huge spice fan! And again, the vegetables and sauce promised on the menu were non-existant. It was bland dishwater noodles and tofu. In the past, we’ve gotten sushi at Niu. However, it has never tasted fresh to me - always a little suspect. So, don’t order the sushi. The only thing I ever thought was halfway decent was their soup. They put it in these little pots with tea lights underneath the bowls to keep them hot. I appreciate food that stays warm and consider this Niu’s one redeeming quality move. Overall, I do not recommend.

We ate here relatively early on a Friday night before heading off to a show. Friendly servers. The food was not gourmet Japanese but perfectly fresh and well presented. I would eat here again.

3 rolls and a large beer for 15 during lunch. Fresh and quick. The price you pay for a lunch special is amazing. Highly push for that time of day.

We ordered carry-out over the phone and had some excellent classic sushi rolls and fried rice. Staff was very friendly.

Nice location downtown Chicago with quality sushi and interesting cocktails. Prices are reasonable and staff is friendly. We like the Spicy Tuna, the Spider and Rock and Roll rolls.

The sushi here was very good. We ordered a rainbow roll, the Devil's roll, Tuna roll, thai noodles, and shrimp spring roll. I would say that the prices were pretty reasonable for what we received. The staff was overall attentive, but we did have to flag down our waiter a couple of times.

Very good sushi lunch specials, and possibly the best hot n' sour soup I've had... make it a seafood hot & sour for extra flavor. My favorite was the sexy Mexican and rainbow roll.

We had reservations and were seated quickly. The food was timely served, was hot and very tasty. The drinks were filled with alcohol and flavor. Wold go agin..

I love sushi, I love Japanese food. I go to a new and highly reviewed place every time we travel from California to NYC, Mexico to Europe so I think I know sushi that's made everywhere else besides in Japan. I don't want to sound like a pompous know it all, I just wanted to make it clear that I've eaten a lot of sushi....breakfast, lunch and dinner. This was one of my least favorite places. The staff seemed uninterested in being helpful (and we are seriously NOT difficult people) and we had 2 of our parties meals 15 minutes before the other 2 at our table. The sushi was barely okay. It was drowned in sauces and some of the combinations were not tasty at all. One of my rolls had room temperature raw fish on it, another had slightly warm sushi-very slightly- so I actually wasn't sure if it was supposed to be a cold roll or a cooked one, of course the staff was nowhere to be found so I could see the menu again because I really wasn't sure that it was what I ordered. It was extremely quiet and dark, there were a lot of staff just a lack of attention. We didn't get water refills and the bill took a very long time to get after we were done eating. We won't be back but there are many others to try in the area!

Great servive, generous portions, and excellent food! I had no problem spending my hard earned money.

The location of this restaurant is right near a Walgreen, another convenience along with a movie theater with arcade and bowling nearby. Which makes it a great spot if you want Japanese cuisine before or after a night out. The atmosphere is low light and mellow. Most of all, it's very inviting. The staff were friendly and professional. The Golden Seafood Crepes were so Good, we had to order another serving. Tasty, meaty, w seasoned and worth every bite. The Tokyo Tonkotsu Ramen was excellent. The Mongolian shrimp af and Honey Seasame shrimp were tasty but not too different from what you'd get with take out. The Bangkok Stir fry was spicy and good but was overwhelmed with way too many mushrooms. The coconut-tini was a 1st and it was smooth and very tasty. As was the ginger-tini. Their worth another shot because of other menu items and the selection of sushi. The pricing was t too bad either. Expect to spend at least $25-30 per person.

We had a party of 5 and we all shared our food, it was all fantastic. Our server recommended the tuna poke roll and I had never had anything like that before. Just the right amount of kick and spice.

It's actually been a while since I went to this restaurant but I had forgotten to write a review afterwards. Anyways if you see looking for a place that has a modern feel but still want to experience the Japanese atmosphere than Niu Japanese Fusion Lounge is for you. The food is some of the best Japanese style I've had in a while and it's not to expensive so your wallet is not stretched too thin when it comes to dining out. However since it is a popular restaurant you want to go when there is not a lot of foot traffic because then you'll be waiting for your turn in line to get seated and waiting additionally to get your meal. The restaurant is large enough to accommodate a heavy number of people but for the experience I've found it best to go before the rush starts. When you're there the food is among some of the best you can have at a reasonable price and it's not a bad place for a first date if anyone is interested in knowing of a few good places to take your special someone. I definitely plan on going back as soon as I can.

We have been to Niu well over two dozen times, but have never reviewed them before. This visit was as perfect as every one before it, The sushi is always fantastic, and one of our favorite appetizers on the menu is beef tataki - it is perfect every time, The staff is quick and courteous, and one of my favorite things about this restaurant (or any restaurant) is when your water glass doesn't get below half full before someone comes to top you off. We will continue to be loyal customers, and look forward to our next trip to the city, so we can visit again!

Went for a dinner. We ordered some rolls, sashimi, spicy edamame, Tempura udon and fried rice. Everything was delicious and must say service was excellent! I would recommend to anyone who wants to try Japanese food!

Everything was delicious! The Japanese fried rice with beef was the best fried rice I've had so far. Sushi rolls are very good-spicy yellowtail was generous and not half filled with tempura like other places. Rainbow roll was a little small, but with 10 pieces it was still good. Rice noodles with beef was amazing in the sweet sauce with a little kick. Would definitely come here again when visiting Chicago

went into Niu thinking to order carryout, but was advised we'd have to do it online, so we decided to sit in which was rather quick. water & table setting arrived fairly quick and server came around within five min took our order. we ordered a Thai noodle dish & 3 rolls sushi. all arrived within a reasonable time frame. would visit again.

Went just once but when I'll go to Chicago again I will definitely go again. The staff was welcoming and very polite. The sushi is really good here and so are their cocktails. Atmosphere is great and an overall really good experience.

Just ate here for the first time and we will be back. Food was fresh and tasty. Service was very good too.

It was a wonderful cool evening to sit outside and enjoy this Japanese experience. Chicago Sunrise and Spicy Girl sushi along with buns were all great. We also tried the sake flight. It is a lot of sake. The service was great too.

They have pretty good sushi but other than that their dishes did not taste that well. Only consideration is that they have tons of spicy ones so watch out as they are really spicy . Service was ok but very noisy as we were seating outside and it is right on the road with construction going on, so maybe inside would be better

My family stopped in here for dinner after visiting Navy Pier. We started with one of the specialty scallop appetizers then shared a plate of General Tso's Chicken and 4 sushi rolls. Appetizer was a little small but very tasty. The chicken was good but a little too much sauce for me. The sushi rolls were very good - nice and fresh. The restaurant is very dark (we had to use cell phones to read the menu) but has a nice feel. We would recommend and would return ourselves.

Tried this out on while traveling to Chicago for work. Ate there for lunch. Service was good. Sushi was average. They have some classic rolls and some more inventive ones. We sampled three rolls (one traditional and two inventive). It was good, but does not rank as one of the top places I have been.

Be prepared to eat a lot here, the portions are big, and as everything is cooked fresh expect a wait for your order. The wait is worth it. Has a nice ambiance, and the food is really good.

We went to Nui for dinner when we stayed in a hotel nearby. Our server was very attentive and made us feel comfortable. The food was great. We enjoyed the cherry blossom and seared duck appetizers. Then we had two sushi rolls and a sashimi platter. The fish was fresh and the rolls were attractive. We had a very pleasant experience. The cheesecake for desert was very nice too!

I love Asian Fusion and was excited to try this place. I wasn't overwhelmed.... Service was nice, but slow. We had to keep asking for our waters to be refilled. I had to get up and go ask for utensils. I normally eat with chopsticks, but the portions/pieces were so huge and I had to cut them up. (I was eating with work colleagues and didn't want to look like a pig trying to eat with my mouth too full). It is dark in the back dining area so have your cell phone light handy to read the menu. The food itself was just ok. I certainly have had better. I would check out other places on TripAdvisor before eating here.

Didn't know what to expect, but was amazed by the great food. We shared a selection of 4 different menu items. Highly recommend this place for the food, atmosphere and staff!

My group and I was looking for a place to eat. Although it was kind of late around (9:15pm), we walked in and the host had to check first if he could seat us, as they closed around 10pm. We did get seated, but vibe from the host felt like he didnt want our business and would rather have us go else where. He did say that the kitchen would close in 10 minutes, as we rushed to place our order, then was told that they were no longer serving ramen and also ran out of rice for sushi. They advised us that they have rice, just not the sushi rice (which we still ordered, and was still good), but NO ramen. Overall experience, the host was, "meh," but the waitress was friendly and food was good. I'd of course recommend going earlier to maybe being treated more friendly.

Huge selection of sushi, sashimi, and specialty rolls (the cooked salmon Pink Lady is divine, and perfect for non-sushi lovers with the absence of nori and wasabi), Also many other choices such as rice bowls, honey batter shrimp and chicken, etc. Nice staff. Large dining room, bar area in the front. Take out and delivery available.

Dinner was great. First class beautiful restaurant. Service great. Food spectacular: sushi, ramen, miso, tempura, scallion pancakes. All as good as you can get. Tables spread out. Can’t wait to return.

“Fabulous” is the only word I’d use to describe the sushi here. I decided to come here after raving reviews from my friends and oh boy! I wasn’t disappointed. The moment we walked in, I knew this place would be something, thanks to a packed full house at 5:30pm. We managed to get a table. Servers were sweet and we placed our order pretty quick, we exactly knew what we wanted. The sushi arrived so quick which was a an absolute kicker cuz I was starving. Dynamite Roll Poke Tuna Roll Firecracker Roll So damn delicious, adeptly rolled out sushi, extremely chunky and flavourful and drizzled with a sweet sticky soy glaze which I loved! 10 pieces a roll is perfect, although I am afraid I must have had a bite too many from my friends’ plates. Rates are decent. I am going back for some more today, when you’re in the area, drop by here for some really really kickass sushi.

Just finished dinner in this place with friends. The ambiance is very nice as thr music is relaxed and not very loud. We had the seaweed salad and the octupus topped one (i believe it was called sunomo) both were very good. We had an assortment of makis, a fusion dish and seared tuna nagiri, all very good. I wouldnt recommend the green tea icecream for dessert though.

Everything is DELICIOUS! We ordered some hot apps (scallion pancakes, gyoza, egg rolls) and sushi (chicago summer, spicy tuna, tuna avocado, nigiri, and more). Sushi was delicious. Service was great - quick and efficient. Loved the vibes of the restaurant too! Would def come back!

We came for late lunch to this Japanese restaurant with warm interior in Chicago. Service was very friendly. All sushis and other food were special and tasted great. Need to return to check all the other great stuff.

Our group had a variety of rolls, sushi, soups, Udon, etc. Everything was very good, as expected in a higher scale Japanese restaurant. I just was not overwhelmed or surprised by anything I saw. The price is medium, and slightly on a higher end, but still very reasonable.

We waited 15 minutes to see a server and when they came they were harried. Food was overpriced and had little flavor. Will not return

Maybe you’re visiting Chicago and trying to find a good sushi restaurant? Afraid to risk time, money, and tastebuds on bad sushi. No need to worry here! The food was fantastic! I had the Dragon and my husband had the Cajun fusion—both were excellent! The atmosphere was pleasant and the price was descent. We will certainly return when in Chicago again!

Chinese, Japanese and mixed foods. Nothing special. The bad desserts. The receptionist in a very bad mood. There is not much variety in the area

Walking in there were several tables quite dressed up, so combined with the trendy decor I was expecting higher prices. Prices here were more in line with sushi places in other cities, while the other restaurants I went to while visiting Chicago were more noticably overpriced. The sushi was very good as was the miso soup. Also enjoyed the unique flavor of the lavender-lemon tea.

Great Asian fusion food. Something for everyone, Ramen, Dim Sum, sushi, noodles and much much more. Great vibe and service. Food and presentation excellent.

It's hard to find good sushi at reasonable prices. This one and another that I have reviewed meet the reasonable price part but barely make the good part. I ate at the sushi bar and I am finding that no longer will the sushi chefs speak to you much less take your order. It's a real shame because I always count on them for recommendations. This place was no different. Stone faced chefs working fast to make the orders as they came in. Food quality was good but the maki rolls were cut way to thin. I wonder if they are making smaller rolls to reduce cost. In any case it was just ok quality

This is a romantic restaurant, lights soft and very nice decoration! The portions are great and the food amazing! Service good, the only thing i didnt like is that I asked for more shirasha sauce and they didnt mention it will be an extra cost, I mean , it was in our dish but in a small amount, perhaps because so many people doesnt eat spicy , but if We do, why to charge for another small amount?

My friends and I picked this place at random, and it was pleasantly surprising for all of us. Day menu was excellent. It had a large variety, and we could try out a few of their signature dishes. Great food. Friendly & knowledgeable staff. Will come back again!

My colleage and I opted for Japanese and what a wonderful little restaurant we found on illinois Avenue in Chicago. Great ambiance, music, attentive and amazing waiters and the food was superb! From the salad ( ginger dressing ), seafood crepes to the spider maki and thai stirfry with chicken, we ate with gusto until we could not budge! Gotta check it out!

Besides sushi and dim sum, you could order more traditional Japanese dinners including tempura., or udon or ramen. We had 2 sushi rolls (the mango tango was great!), seaweed salad (not strictly seaweed in it, because it was on a lettuce bed), sashimi combination dish. A nice find.

This restaurant offered quality sushi and exceptional service. Portions are average but wine selection made up for it! Highly recommend this restaurant.

I never had such bad service. Our waiter was just an amateur which ruined an otherwise good late lunch. He left the menus on our table throughout our stay. Never asked us what we wanted to drink. Kept making mistakes in our orders and leaving previous dishes on the table. Finally when we had desert he left my entree on the table, the menus of course so to access my cheese cake I had to hover over both of them. This is the point I had to just take it all to the next empty table myself. The thing is the food itself was actually good. The wanton soup was very enjoyable, we loved all our sushi dishes. The scallops dish was very good and generous.

My son lives right across the street from this Japanese restaurant in Chicago and he loves the food there. While we were visiting him my husband wanted to try it as he loves Japansese food also, I do not like it. So they all decided on 3 types of sushi, lobster soup, sweet and sour chicken and something tuna. They all said it was amazingly delicious, my husband was in heaven as he only has Japanese food when he is with my son. He said the flavor was amazing and sushi was so fresh. We got it to go as it was a bit later at night. We walked by the next day and my son said the inside is very cozy, inviting and alot of fun to eat in at. They also have outdoor patio seating for now not sure what winter will bring with the Covid going on, although they can seat inside just not sure how many people. My son and husband highly recommend this place if you are a Japanese food lover. It looked delicious even though I don't prefer that type of food.

We ordered sushi for carry-out while staying at the nearby Embassy Suites hotel. It was a bit pricey, but our sushi was fresh and delicious!

yet another fantastic dining experience at NIU. this time we had a combination of sushi and the stir fry with a jalapeño stuffed appetizer and everything was outstanding.

I am not a typical fusion food but this experience has been a great introduction. The flavors are delicious and the waiter was extra patient explaining the different dishes.

This place is my frequented Japanese restaurant with American taste(sweeter plates than authentic style). Staffs are kind. A little bit dark environment, so not good for reading any material. Plates are delicious side. Price reasonable.

Food was amazing seating was great (outdoor). Servers and staff very friendly all around a great trip def. Going to repeat!

Was at Hyatt for a conference wanted sushi....able to walk there! Food very fresh, did not feel rushed! Enjoyed our meal and would try again.

There were seven of us and we were hungry! This was a fortuitous choice. Our server, Lauren, was warm, friendly, attentive, and quite efficient and you all know how much that can influence a dining experience. When I write reviews, I like to describe each dish in some detail along with my comment about it. Too much food here, but I can mention a few things. First, my vodka martini was excellent. That always makes me feel good about a place! The Edamame was the only disappointment. Way too cold and too small a portion, but that's the only negative in a sea of positives. Two other appetizers were excellent: Crouching Tiger which is spicy tuna, avocado, tempura shrimp wrapped with lettuce and rice paper, topped with wasabi cream sauce and Ceviche Flight: Asian pear and asparagus wrapped in a trio of five-spice pepper seared tuna, hamachi, and salmon, topped with jalapeño wasabi drizzle. Red Snapper dinner and Salmon Teriyaki were thoroughly enjoyed. All the sushi and sashimi orders were served beautifully and were fresh and delicious. This place is a winner. Conveniently located near many downtown Chicago hotels and movie theaters. Noise level: not bad. Don't think you'll have any regrets if you give it a try.

Came here for a team dinner right before the start of a busy week. The place was pretty lively and the service was great the whole time we were there. Their drink menu is pretty extensive and I ordered a lychee martini (?) that was delicious! We ordered various dishes to share, tapas style. Some stood out more than others - the tuna tartare was ok. I really wanted to like the hamachi with jalapenos, but I was disappointed in the flavor and freshness of the fish. The fried calamari was solid. We ordered some rolls, but they also just ok. I think I'm spoiled by the Japanese food in California because I'd say the food is 2.5 and the service bumped it up to 3 stars.

Located next door to the AMC theater in the Near Northside, it doesn't have a lot of competition for accessible quality restaurants. That said, it was a disappointment as the fish was a bit rubbery and the Maki's not worth the calories. The place is large and therefore somewhat noisy but the service was very good so there's that.

I wrote a review of this restaurant in 2014. I had been going for years, it was my favorite sushi place in the city. My son, daughter and friends have been going on my recommendation. A couple of weeks ago went there and brought friends for a birthday, then a couple of days later went back with my mother. We came in at 3:03 pm. we were seated, looked at the menu and had a drink, then ordered. We were given a lunch menu and the sign was still outside. Surprise, when I got the bill. We were charged the dinner price, I asked to speak to the Manager. The manager Robert was so rude. His behavior was disgusting. Honestly I don't know how someone like him could be in the restaurant business. he totally humiliated me and my Mother. He acted like I wanted something for free. Really? Second time I was there that week, the sign was still outside (after we paid it was mysteriously changed..... It is a place I won't be going back to or recommending until Robert is no longer working there, which probably won't be long for the way he treats customers!! Beware!!!!

We were looking for a good sushi place in the downtown area and this place was recommended to us by a friend of a friend. We'll definitely be making a return visit! They offer a variety of traditional and unique sushi rolls, and they give you a lot for a reasonable price. Most of the classic rolls are cut into eight pieces and range from $7 to $9, where as the more unique rolls are cut into 10 pieces and cost between $13-$16. Also, try the strawberry Rosé!

Nice ambiance . Near quite a few large hotels. A complete bar. Excellent appetizers and main dishes. Very tasty. Great service

We started visiting the Streeterville area near navy pier and we were looking for a good sushi spot in the neighborhood. We found Niu on trip advisor and the sushi was quite fresh and tasty. We’ve returned several times and have never been disappointed! Consistently good food and service...always busy! Definitely worth a visit if your in the area.

Great experience. I went to eat alone and sat in the bar. The sushi was great and also the cocktail menu. Good place to go if you want to eat in a calm place with a good atmosphere.

Had a great menu of both Japanese and Chinese food. Perfect for our taste. Excellent service and good food.

Quite nice sushi place on the way to Navy Pier with interesting fusion options. I really enjoyed the T.G.I.S. rolls with spicy tuna.

You have to try their Sexy Mexican roll. This is their own speciality and it keeps me coming back at least twice a month! Service is fast and always attentive.

Stopped in on the way back to our hotel from the Navy Pier. There was an advertisement outside for the Ramen special. $8.00! We each had a huge bowl of ramen that was perfectly seasoned and very filling. We shared a beer and a saki and were set for the rest of the day. The quality and value were definitely there. The only thing that keeps this from a 5 rating is the service. While adequate, I certainly would not call it friendly or engaging.

We ate here the day here the day after Thanksgiving. Our meal was wonderful. Service was excellent. The wine list was great as well as the beer and drink list. The food was good. We had a variety of things. . .Miso Soup, Hot & Sour Soup, Edamame, Ginger Salad, a variety of sushi and sashimi. All of it was delicious. The fish was great quality. The only issue with the restaurant was the lighting. It was so dark. Many people at tables around us had to use their phone lights to read the menu. Aside from that, highly recommend!!

Popped in for a quick lunch while on business and was pleasantly surprised. They have a wonderful selection of sushi, sashimi and other delicious options. I wasn't in the mood for sushi, but had the Green Curry. It was fantastic. Plentiful with both chicken and a wonderful variety of vegetables, all steamed to perfection. The dish was "hot" and aromatic. I was impressed with the flavor and the heat. The decor is very welcoming and, as I was dining alone, the staff was friendly, helpful and not overly pushy. It was just a very warm and welcoming place for a quick bite.

Came for a late lunch on a Sunday with a Japanese exchange student. She saw pictures on their website and deemed it worthy of a try. We, and she, we're not disappointed. Classy, comforting decor and good service. Specialty cocktail menu is nice, and sake is available. But we did not sample. It was Ramen Happy hour 11 to 3 on Saturday and Sunday, and two of us ordered same. Truly delicious, and authentic, according to our visitor. Very fresh nigiri, at reasonable prices as well. All in all, 5 stars.

We went there after a movie, we had sushi and drinks. I can't remember the name of the rolls we picked, but they were very good. We had lycée martinis, also good. The kitchen closes at 10.30, we got there at about 9.45. They were very efficient but still kind. The server asked for the last round. Prices are average. The environment is nice.

I thought the service was good. The sweet potato tempura rolls were fine. The niu chatta with rum chatta and cinnamon was good. The green curry with brown rice was good. We were able to get in on a Saturday night with 7 of us so that was nice.

Prior to visiting Chicago for the marathon weekend arriving earlier to enjoy Chicago, I checked online reviews and this was one of the restaurants I made prior reservations. It is a 2 minute walk from the Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverfront Hotel. Service was very kind and attentive. The decor and ambiance was modern and quiet during our visit. It was full or almost full the evening of the marathon (Sun Oct 9th). A friend of ours order the sushi, my wife order ramen and I order the Honey Sesame Wok dish. We all loved our food and drinks/cocktails Our server Juan was friendly and attentive.

We had just flown into Chicago and were starving, so ordered quite a bit of food. It was all very good. They give cucumber water which was great. Their sashimi pieces were very large, and the specialty rolls were big (~10 pieces) and delicious. The Poke Tuna roll was particularly good. The atmosphere was trendy and seemed upscale, but the prices were about what the cost of sushi is in other cities at more casual places. There was a wide range of attire, but I felt comfortable in jeans, boots, and a sweater. Had a great experience and would definitely return.

My husband, daughter and I had dinner here on a Friday night. Very nice that they allowed us to order happy hour items with only 5 minutes left of happy hour. Had tuna sashimi - great presentation, but very thick slices and although served on bed of ice, wasn't cold and was very bland tasting. Husband had Pad Thai, again, pretty bland. Daughter had tofu and it had really thick sauce on it that was tasty. For the price, would have preferred going somewhere else. Service was also mediocre.

Everything was delicious, the sushi was amazing, the Bota box lunch yummy and the noodles fantastic. Fresh and tasty.

Dipped into this cool sushi place on a rainy night. Noticed locals ordered take out. Noise was moderate to quiet. Food was fabulous - interesting combinations beautifully presented and very delicious

Stopped for lunch between meetings and was surprised with this place. The food was pretty good and lunch bento box specials are reasonably priced. Personally I found the sushi selection limited but fresh. It seems like there is a standard Chicago style for spicy tuna rolls (minced tuna) and no futo maki ( my favorite). All in all not bad but could be much better

We were hungry for sushi and were not disappointed. We had the lunch special bento box. The green tea was outstanding. This restaurant is only a 10 min walk to Navy Pier so we decided to see that too. This restaurant is a little off the beaten path but worth it.

This restaurant was about half empty on friday night. That should say something. My first problem was reading the menu. Perhaps they were saving electricity, but I just couldn't see the menu. I took off my glasses. I noticed another guest using his cellphone flashlight to read the menu. The second problem was the service, or lack thereof. This place is SLOW. The table next to us, hailed a waiter and said please wait on us. We got waited on, but the waiter got our order wrong (didn't bring wine), the gyoza was awful, and they didn't have my wife's item left (we were told this after 30 minutes). This place is not a class act.

Dropped in for dinner without a reservation, which was no problem as it was early and the service was excellent. I have to observe a special diet and the waiter took me through my options without any issue and after consultation with the kitchen. The food quality was outstanding and I would definitely return to this restaurant on my next visit to Chicago. The Japanese Fusion menu was impressive.

I am always impressed when the lunch menu offers items that you want to eat at a great price. Our choices were fun and phenomenal. The Bento Boxes are great. The specials on the sushi rolls offered rolls that I hadn't tried before.

Nice ambience and food was very good We had the sexy Mexican roll, mellow yellow and, tuna roll preceded by dragon scallop appetizer. I liked the same flight, our waiter was very nice and helpful. Will go back

What an excellent restaurant! One of the best in Chicago. Make a reservation! All the dishes have been excellent! The Lobster Coconut soup was wonderful! The rainbox rools are wonderful, freshly made rice, fresh and delicious ingredients, a delicacy in the mouth. But the dish that took all the awards was the Deluxe Chirashi! What a wonderful dish! One of the best Japanese food dishes we have tried in the world! On a base of very good rice, there is a feast of flavors of prawns, shells, crab meat, and red, black and one caviar eggs mixed with a little wasabi, with a fish and tuna, and other things that were a true delicacy ! Good attention. Highly recommended!

I visited this place on Sunday for a quick bite, and was really craving Ramen. As the most well-known ramen place in the neighborhood stopped offering take-away on the weekend, I looked this place up and decided to give it a try. Located right next to the AMC theaters, the staff was friendly (and cute), and the food was EXCELLENT. I ordered the spicy ramen and it really hit the spot. Supple, slightly salty, and spicy, the ramen had a chew to them which told you they were fresh. I would return just for them.

There are so many different opinions and things each one of us can share about a place, a restaurant, a person. That is why I like to keep my review short & sweet. I tried some good food and the service was great. Will go back soon.

Great drinks and great sushi. Spicy Yellowtail and sexy mexican roll are among the best I've ever had. Nice ambiance as well. House old fashioned drink is amazing.

Stopped by for a quick lunch. The Miso soup was excellent. Just not many nigiri sushi options. I enjoyed the salmon toro a great deal and tobiko was tasty too. Service was quick and attentive.

If you are staying at the Sheraton Grand, Lowe’s, Embassy Suites and more there is an Asian Fusion spot within a 5 minute walk. I asked the concierge at the hotel for a good Thai place close by and this is where they suggested. We started with the spring roles and they were fairly generic. We also tried the fried calamari and it was good albeit a little two crispy for one in our party. For entrees we all went with more traditional dishes like Kung Pao chicken and red curry shrimp. They were all good but not unique or memorable. The menu seems to be mainly sushi and to be fair none of us went in that direction (and it may be the thing to do at Niu). I’d try the sushi at Niu but if you’re looking for a real Thai experience I would check out something’s else.

Restaurant advised by our hotel. Definitely a good pick. Very quiet place, quite close to the main street (Michigan). Raw fish quality is excellent (9 sashimi pieces of salmon), so are the rolls (Pink Lady). Japanese rice with shrimps is very well prepare: a little bit too much of quantity for a single plate. Safely recommended

Excellent, high quality sushi. We started with greens, crispy calamari and then lots of sushi for main course. I love yellow tail rolls and this was the best yellow tail I have had in many years. Melt in your mouth delicious. Very convenient location near the river and attentive, premium service. We will come back.

We dined here with family after Thanksgiving and were pleasantly surprised by prompt service, low noise level (good for talking), fresh Japanese sushi of many varieties and elegant presentation. The interior design was lovely although the light level was a bit low for reading the menu! I would recommend it as a reasonably priced restaurant in an otherwise touristy location. It is definitely walking distance from Navy Pier and many hotels.

Stopped in for dinner and the restaurant was about half full. We were seated immediately and were brought water. We had a simple appetizer and the sesame chicken which was very good. Once our waited dropped off our food we didn't see him again until he brought our check. He didn't bother to stop back and see how the food was and if we needed refills.

My husband and I had dinner at Niu Japanese Fusion Lounge and we enjoyed our dinner. The food and ambiance were great. This is a popular place and making a reservation is highly recommended.

I found this restaurant on Trip Advisor while I was in Chicago on business. The ratings were excellent and it was an easy, short walk from Sheraton Towers where I was staying. I got there early and took a seat at the bar where I could spread out and relax. The bartender had just relocated from Portland Maine and recognized ny Boston accent immediately. She was very attentive and friendly. I ordered hot (and cold) Sake, miso soup, sticky rice, sashimi platter and topped it off with a special roll chosen by the bartender. Everything was very good but the sashimi was exquisite. It was fresh and very, very tasty. The salmon was like butter. I had a very enjoyable meal!

Food was excellent, fresh and presented beautifully. The service was friendly and very accommodating. The ambience is inviting. Best yellow-tail Sashimi ever! My adult son was most pleased with his orange chicken and soft shell crab roll.

We have been to a lot of Japanese restaurants and this is one of our favourites. The sushi was delicious, melts in your mouth. We had the third last one of the specialty rolls... forgot what it was called but had sliced mango on the top. Loved the ambiance and the most efficient service we experienced in our visit to Chicago. Very clean and well decorated. Excellent range of food to choose from on the menu. Only thing is that the servers could have been livelier and it would have been nice to see a bit of a smile on their face but other than that 5 stars.

We came in on Saturday afternoon and there were 2 other tables. The General Manager took our order for Sake flights and gave us a great experience with his favorites and took time to explain each one to us. The sushi we ordered was delicious and very fresh.

Happened past Niu as we were walking and stepped in for lunch. We sat at the sushi bar and other than taking awhile to get our order, everything was very good. All three of us had different selections and they were all very good. Price seems fairly typical for sushi at a nicer restaurant at lunch-time. Upscale atmosphere and decor.

It can be tough to find places for New Year's Eve suppers that are nice but don't require a reservation. The concierge at our hotel called ahead and we were seated immediately upon arrival. The food was good, fresh sushi and a light batter on the tempura. Steamed edamame was also good. We would done here again

Fresh sushi, great taste! Loved the atmosphere and the service was fast and friendly. I stuck with the lunch special menu (modifies pricing during the week) and was very satisfied!

Stylish setting, excellent food, high quality service, clean. Price was not bad for downtown Chicago. This was a good value, and worth a return visit. It even worked well for the vegetarian members of our group.

Super good sushi! Must try the spicy tuna chips as an appetizer, it's delicious! Great modern atmosphere and it's not super loud like most restaurants in the heart of the city! We love sushi and Niu in downtown Chicago is great!

This is a great restaurant that serves Asian Fusion type dishes. The atmosphere is very relaxed and the staff are attentive. The menu offers a wide range of foods from quality sushi to Ramens and Kung Pao. The drink menu is also excellent offering local beer, wines and cocktails. Value for money is also excellent.

Ordered them off of door dash and this food was super yummy with huge portions. We ordered the dragon roll, the flamer & the red snapper fillets with green beans & hot and sour soup. Although the sushi was very good, the clear winner was the red snapper fillet dish. There was so much red snapper in the dish overflowing with the green beans we were only able to eat 1/2 the rolls and didn’t even get to the soup.

Our group of 7 was quickly seated and served. The food was nicely presented and the portions were large.

Chicago's Lakeshore Dirve was sundrenched and we needed lunch after a long walk. we chose Niu Sushi at random - it was the first place we spotted when we felt hungry. And what a find! Fresh and zingy flavours, inventive sushi combinations and delicious sashimi, served in a calm and quiet atmosphere that was as refreshing as the food. Very highly recommended.

Delicious fresh Japanese food, original presentation, went back the next day for more. try it out!!!

I came here for an early dinner after taking in a movie at the next door AMC. Service was friendly and swift. My waitress was helpful and checked on me often. I ordered the veg. spring rolls which were very bland. Next time I'll go for the gyoza dumplings instead. The eda mame was good as was the tempura udon. Not exceptional but good. Portions are big and this was too much food for one. There is an extensive sushi menu as well. They also have some Thai dishes such as Pad Thai. I was in and out in 30 minutes the service was that fast.

Went there over lunch and got high quality sushi, served friendly and fast. Location is great, menu very good

Had a pretty great Tom yum soup, excellent sushi rolls, sake and some red wine. Prices were a bit above average but the food, the atmosphere and the service we're great!

Despite being a picky eater, my 13-year-old granddaughter adores sushi, so we decided to try Niu, close to our hotel, for dinner. I asked her to order for us, as she had a better idea of what might be good. She ordered two different rolls, and we probably could have eaten a third, as they were delicious. I had a glass of nice white wine, but had I known how refreshing the cucumber-infused water was, I could have skipped the wine.

Had a very good experience at NIU this past weekend. The cocktails are unique, sushi fresh, and the food was delicious.

Visited there one Thursday night with my two teens. Son had miso soup (he just got back from Japanese camp so he's in love with miso soup). I had some lobster soup which was so ridiculously hot I couldn't eat it for 20 min. Server warned me tho. Had chicken dumplings which were very good. Daughter had the best sesame honey chicken I have ever tasted!! Tried 2 different kinds of sushi and of course I can't remember the names but very good. Place got a bit dark on our way out and I saw people having to read the menu with the light from their phones. Oh the table water had cucumber in it. I was a little skeptical of a fusion restaurant and two teens which didn't seem like my thing. It wasn't too pretentious.

Was located near hotel, and did not feel like going far for dinner after a full day of walking around the town. Since we all love sushi, we thought we would give it a try. Service was fast. Sushi fresh and good. Large choice of rolls, nigiri and sashimi. Full bar. Only disappointment was that they were out of Toro, even though it is on the menu.

My wife and I were staying at Loew's Chicago across the street from here. On our last night in Chicago we decided to eat here for convenience. We were pleasantly surprised. We had sushi. The food was fresh, very tasty, and very fast. The seafood wrap appetizer was especially good. The restaurant was nicely appointed and I found the prices to be in the same ballpark as many other sushi places that we have been. All in all, a great place to have nice date or family meal.

I've been there a few times for lunch during the week. Sushi is great, freshly made and very tasty. Price is great during lunch hours.

Since we only had one hour for lunch, we picked this place. Although their menu was super aged and torn, the service we received was efficient and professional. All of us ordered their lunch bento box. Mine (kung po chicken) seemed to be the best one in terms of taste. The portion size was adequate, but I wish it could be a little bit cheaper.

Are here twice on a recent business trip. Food was mediocre at best, flavors we're not well balanced in any of the food or drinks I tried. Service was top notch though.

Was in Chicago on a conference staying at a great hotel. The agenda had it that I was alone one of the nights and needed to dine alone. My plan was to just eat solo at the hotel restaurant, but after googling restaurants near my hotel I came across this Asian fusion restaurant which was literally walking distance away. What a surprise. Great vibe, extensive menu and delicious food. Everything from sushi to wok dishes. Had the stir fry asparagus teriyaki, a sakitini martini and vegetarian egg rolls. All excellent!! The best was my server Lauren!! She made me feel so comfortable!! Amazing food.

I have been to Niu twice, both times have been delicious. They have a great Lychee Martini that I enjoyed during the first visit. The menu is diverse and contains something for everyone, but I was there for the sushi. It did not disappoint we order the Pink Lady, Dragon and Spicy Mexican rolls and they were all amazing. The chefs cut them in one-bite slices for easy, "not meant to embarrass you" pieces. THANK YOU. There are various non-sushi items for people that do not partake. Niu also has a great HOT and COLD appetizer menu. We order dumplings and prosciutto wrapped scallop. It was an individual scallop, but worth the money. The veggie dumplings were pan fried to perfection. If you are considering Niu, do it. I will definitely be back.

The cherry blossom appetizer is wonderful! Highly recommend! Also the pepper sushi was good, but after the CB, nothing else could compare!

Go during happy hour to beat the crowd. The sushi are fresh. The sushi are large! The decor was nice and similar to many lounges (dimly lit and modern)

Sushi is fresh. Great selection of sushi and hot dishes. Expensive but the food is good. Always seem to end up there on holidays - Labor Day, NY day, and never too crowded. Sexy Mexican roll and Sesame ice cream are great.

My wife and I had a very nice lunch here. We split four different rolls and were very happy with them. The service was a bit slow for lunch but we were not in a hurry and so did not mind. We would definitely eat here for lunch again when we are in the neighborhood.

The food is delicious. Serving size is huge!!!! The staff are warm and friendly. Ordered the gyoza and a maki to start, freshly prepared and served quickly. We ordered yakisoba and teriyaki chicken for mains. Both were delicious. It's refreshing to vegetables on your plate in America!!!! My only complaint would be the chicken was a little dry but there was enough yummy sauce to counter it! Definitely worth a visit!

We live in Streeterville and our apartment building arranged a tasting of some of Niu's menu items and a little of their wine selection. The tastes were pretty good, so we ordered carry out for dinner. We recommend the spicy tuna chips appetizer, the mellow yellow roll with salmon and mango, and honey sesame chicken. The items on the menu are more than just sushi; there is also Thai and Wok items served with rice. Definitely a good wide variety menu and very good tastes.

Nice restaurant space. A bit crowded seating. Service was friendly and good. Unfortunately everything else was downhill. Sushi roll was not cheap, and not good. Main dish was plentiful but taste was not right. All in all not a terrible experience but on the expensive side and food not satisfying. Don't plan on returning.

Visited here recently for lunch. Had a Bentobox, Sushi was nice but not amazing, rice was overcooked and chicken teriyaki was fine but not anything more. Miso soup was good and portion was large. Overall the meal was OK but was not very tasty and I wouldn't rush back.

Is this place somewhat dark, yes. Is the sushi good, yes but not spectacular. Interesting that I ate at a Japanese restaurant owned by a Mexican American and served by a very nice and helpful Irishman. Doesn't all seem to fit, but it works.

We had an awesome meal here; portions are large and we found it good value for money. Nice atmosphere. Close to Sheraton Grand Hotel, too.

I was visiting a friend for a girls weekend and we had some time to spare before getting our mani/pedis. We popped in and was given a seat in the lounge area because it was super crowded. At times it felt as though we were forgotten, but that is understandable...and we only had time to kill really. The food and drinks were amazing! The sushi was awesome. We left feeling relaxed, content, full and satisfied. Definitely worth a trip back.

We were visiting Chicago and liked the food and service in this restaurant so much that we return to eat a second night. Truly excellent selection of food; wonderfully prepared. They have great drinks and deserts. Most impressed. If we lived in Chicago, we would become regular patrons of this establishment.

We visited this beautiful restaurant recently during a visit to Chicago. We had an amazing experience. The food was outstanding, the cocktails were brilliant and the service excellent. We will definitely be back on our next visit. Thank you to Mikey, Tim and all the staff for a very memorable evening.

Being right next door to the AMC theaters, we have tried the restaurant before. Our son like their sushi and we tend to go for something more standard - like Pad Thai. The menu is extensive and their presentation is beautiful. Excellent quality and quantity for the pricing. This is a great choice for before or after the show.

Went here for dinner and very much enjoyed ourselves. The service was good but nothing extraordinary, our server was new but was attentive and helpful. The food was very good, I had a jalapeno and beef dish (pictured) that was very tasty. The sushi is where it is at, got some individual sushi (pictured) and it was amazing. This restaurant also had a very nice atmosphere for dinner with friends (or a couple) that allowed for pleasant conversation without shouting.

Really enjoyed our meal at Niu. We sat outside and our server was excellent. Drinks were very good with a decent wine list. All our food was tasty and beautiful on the plate. We tried maki rolls, some appetizers, sushi and the Korean bbq beef short ribs were incredible. Would have likes to see more specific "fusion" dishes identified and highlighted.

Over the years NIU Sushi has never disappointed. Food has stayed consistently great, sushi is always spot on (and fresh) and the dishes from noodles to stir frys are always good. Great apps, and even better cocktails (try the Lychee Martini). Atmosphere, from the patio in the summer, to the lounge and bar area, the sushi chef counter, or the main dining room is wonderful, and despite the large size, the restaurant feels very intimate. Great for large groups or date nite.

A great place to get some sushi in the city. The dragon roll and seaweed salad are delicious. The atmosphere and service is up to par as well.

Eclectic menu and excellent food. Chicago has such tremendous eateries and this is one of them. Great food and service.

The food was delicious and reasonably priced. They were gracious about re-designing the dishes to accommodate allergies. The baby eggplant was great! Just the right spot to have dinner before seeing the MET opera screening at the AMC Theater next door.

In a nice setting (maybe a bit dark though) this restaurant serves a wide variety af asian food including sushi. Efficient & quick service.

We thoroughly enjoyed the appetizer as well. The tuna sushi roll was one of the best ever. We also had Mongolian beef and witch was probably the best we’ve ever had. It had beautiful, tender beef, and fantastic depth and flavor. We will definitely be coming again.

Ate here because of location next to 21 East movie theater and to our delight, the meal was excellent. From appetizers to a variety of main dishes shared by our table, excellence throughout. Portions were extra large... we all took home doggie bags!

While visit Chicago I tried out Niu. It was so great that I went back a couple of times. I had the dragon, crunchy, spider, spicy tuna, rolls, as well as the veggie tempura. All were terrific. The service was great too. Usually being a single diner in a busy restaurant, you get overlooked, but the waitstaff was attentive (but not pushy).

Didn't know what to expect; attending conference nearby and found it on TA. Sushi really stood out - even the California Roll, which is normally unremarkable at Sushi places, was distinctive and excellent. Nice atmosphere as well.

Great spot for sushi near The Riverwalk and Michigan Ave. in Chicago. We sampled several specialty rolls and all were superb. The service was friendly and attentive.

NIU is near several hotels and worth trying, as I did. It seems to be popular and several people were stopping by for takeout. The menu is very extensive. Without a reservation, I sat at the bar and ordered a seafood soba noodle dish. It was ample and quite good. Not wanting much more to eat, I didn't try the sushi. The plates being served near me were attractive and seemed to be pleasing. I would be curious to return and sample the sushi.

Ines took à wok and a pas Thaï. Those were very good. Portion are very large (possibility to take the rests as a take away). This is the first restaurant we visit in the USD which doesn't force us to take drinks, this is a very good point as the water is free. Finally, the restaurant atmosphere is very cosy (a bit too much, the light could be harder)

We were walking around the neighborhood and it was dinner time. I suggested this place. My husband resisted because he thought it was an all sushi plce. However, they have a menu posted outside and there is definitely more than sushi offered. He had a beef dish and I had a noodle dish shrimp. It was good. Our server was freindly. I'd go back if ever in the area again.

Decent sushi with a smattering of other Asian influenced options. Good miso soup with fancy presentations.

Atmosphere is great. Spacious and the sashimi portion is generous besides fresh. The fresh ginger is a great sort of appetizer to stir up your appetite. Would be back for sure as service and food were both fantastic at reasonable prices given that it's downtown Chicago.

Well prepared and flavorful. Our waitress and wait staff in general were friendly and accommodating.

Mixed reviews on Yelp as opposed to excellent reviews on OpenTable. Who should I believe. Trust no one – except me/myself! And that is by checking the place out. The place has the type of very dark ambiance that I generally do not like very much (P.S: I prefer places with warm and elegant lightening), is fairly large with many tables, but still offers a very low noise levels to allow for conversations. The menu is rich. Primed with delicious Plum Sake, all choices were beautifully carried out and presented, from Spring Rolls, Cherry Blossom Spicy Tuna Tartar, Miso-broiled Chilean Seabass, Tuna Hama Maki, as well as Sushi Supreme Plate with Chef’s selection of 9 sushi. So - the verdict: previous Yelp reviews underrated, OpenTable slightly overrated. (Originally posted by me on YELP)

Crowded, but not chaotic, for a Sunday evening dinner, we enjoyed extremely fresh sushi and a variety of the evening dinner specials. Service was good, not great, but the food was outstanding and the setting very clean and contemporary.

Great individual pieces of sushi. The rolls weren't great. Drinks large and excellent. Good atmosphere and great service.

Menu is large. Food is meh. Sushi was edible. Tempura had a too high breading to vegetable ratio and dipping sauce tasted watered down. Vegetable goyoza were okay. The whole thing was underwhelming. Go here if you’ve got nowhere else to go.

I went to eat at this place three times during the past four months. Not once did I get disappointed, despite experienting my way through the sushi menu. The food tastes really fresh and is absolutely delicious. I have eaten sushi at many places, but this one truly stands out!

The staff are super friendly and the food is absolutely amazing. Went for lunch and ended up eating way more than planned as it was just so good!!

Okay, so the title is not specific to me as I do not eat sushi. However, the selection here is extensive and from I discovered, quite popular among the many customers I talked to during my visit to this place. My wife and I had just finished walking some 12 miles across the city visiting the Lincoln Park Zoo, the Bean, and just enjoying a gorgeous summer day. We had tickets for the theater in the evening so we just wanted something light to go with our well earned glasses of wine. We devoured the gyoza, which is a steamed dumpling with chicken. You can get it with just vegetables too. The wine list was great and surprising. We had four glasses (two each) of a tasty red wine and a white wine from Spain. I was not expecting that. So, if you want sushi, I am sure this place will more than satisfy. If you want a well-earned glass of wine and a light appetizer, then this place is also perfect. Try it soon!

Besides offering some of the largest maki rolls of any place in town (I mean, seriously) Niu offers a variety of other unique dishes that provide a distinctive spin on Asian cuisine. I'm partial to the calamari, for example. They also do wonderful ramen, including a vegetarian options with mushrooms. At lunch, their bento boxes provide a substantial meal for a reasonable price.

Everything was great, couldn't believe how cheap the lunch was, and LOTS of sushi. I wouldn't change a thing...my favorite was the sexy Mexican roll. I wish I had taken pictures to show just how much sushi they give you!
Sushi & Ramen Bowl good
this review strictly for carry out order of Red Dragon roll sushi & Spicy Miso Ramen , which has been ordered in past. both were good this time as they've been the past.
