Overpriced

By Allie R |

On our cross country roadtrip, my boyfriend and I chose Nook as our breakfast spot before our day exploring SF. It had been recommended to us as a "cute place for breakfast", and while I agree it was "cute" inside, the food was bland and boring. And expensive. $6-7 each for a dry and tiny waffle and a dull fruit cup I could have picked up in any middle school cafeteria. And the staff was tired and uninterested. Maybe we just caught them on a bad day, but I'm not sure I'd go back to test that out!

Fabulous Find

By Pam Q |

A terrific little corner cafe/restaurant that we have visited many times. Food is very good and service is always so friendly and welcoming. Whether it's dropping in for a glass of wine or a light bite, you can't go wrong with a visit to the Nook!

Over-priced lunch

By Fleetwoodmac9 |

I got a chicken, avocado, pesto sandwich and the bottomless champagne. I was not aware, but the bottomless option is $18, but the price is not advertised. The only thing mentioned is a single serving, which is $7.50. The sandwich was decent, as was the small side leafy green salad. A big plus, especially as a transit enthusiast, is that this is at the corner of Hyde and Jackson, so you get the Cable Car turning and passing. Despite that, I still think this place was overpriced and should work on labeling its menu and making it a bit clearer....maybe lower the price, to....just because you're in a trendy-ish part of SF doesn't mean you have to bankrupt people's wallets to be able to enjoy a meal there.

Good and Bad

By amylfed |

I really wanted to love this place and spend my mornings there. The coffee was fine, and watching the cable cars (every 15min or so) was a really cute idea. But their wifi wouldn't connect with my laptop, and the people were kind of rude about it. Also went for a glass of wine one evening, and they advertised the wrong price on the sidewalk for happy hour, and wouldn't honor it, or change the sign.

Stumbled upon

A really nice we cafe, only popped in for drinks one evening and had planned to return for food at some point but never made it. Had already had food that evening but had real envy at the plates that were coming out for diners. Guys were friendly and helpful.

Nice 'lil cafe

By Jooshead |

Lovely range of interesting and tasty sandwiches, small plates and salads. All fresh and made to order while we waited. Good baristas who can read a milk thermometer! Free WiFi during the week - right on the cable car route too, we stopped off here often... Jooshead's Chai Latte rating: 8/10 - really very, very good.

Great atmosphere, but expensive

By Grace P |

I really like this place, on a nice day (for SF) you can sit outside and sip your coffee or eat a sandwich. The coffees are expensive, though they are big. I go here fairly regularly and am always happily pleased but I do feel as though i'm paying too much for what i'm actually drinking/eating.

Great happy hour

By JPY |

This is a small corner cafe and looks attractive from the outside. It is on the corner where the cable car passes by and we had spotted it from our various trips on the cable cars and decided to break our journey there one day . It has a small local feel to the place and like your custom is valued. Our visit coincided with happy hour and had great cocktails for $5. They provide free wifi but curiously this finishes at 6pm, no sure why.

Pefect spot to take a break - and view cable cars

By MidlandsJol |

Had a pleasant afternoon sitting outside in the sun drinking wine, it is an excellent spot for watching the passing cable cars. It was a great 'find' and enabled us to have a rest on our tourist trail. Wifi is available.

Great Spot for a Beer and Meal

By kleiner57 |

We decided to stop here for a beer after seeing it while taking the Cable Car up Nob Hill. We are glad we stopped. Pabst Blue Ribbon was inexpensive during Happy Hour, and the warm flatbread was excellent. Service was good-the servers answered all of our questions and were very friendly. We sat outside enjoying our beer, flatbread, and sandwich, and this is an excellent spot to relax and watch people and the Cable Cars. We will be back next time!

Neighbourhood cafe with lovely homemade fruit lemonade.

By ailsa r |

We found this cafe a few blocks up from the very interesting cable car museum and we had lunch a second time en route to the Van Ness House. Good salads and sandwiches and baking. Only complaint was due to the free wifi it can be difficult to get a table: lots of singles sitting for ages with a coffee: frustrating for owners and genuine patrons alike. One of our best finds away from the buzz of Union Sqare.

just tried a plate but loved it

We stopped in for a glass of wine a bite to eat while walking by. The artichoke stuffed with cheese was perfect. Wish we had planned to eat more. We will be back.

Favorite neighborhood gem!

By Shannon K |

Gosh, I love this little place! I'm here way too often, but the coffee, the food and the staff keeps me coming back for more. Their bagel with lox is a great breakfast bet as is their veggie breakfast wrap! I love that they use the 'Stampt' program, too (iPhone users have to download it -- such a great little application!) -- get 10 stamps for coffee and get one free. :)

A small good neighborhood place

By Joseph C |

It isn't a big restaurant but it's or fancy. plain tables, some internet users, a meeting place, we've met some interesting people there.

Cozy Neighborhood Hangout

By C B |

At the corner of Jackson and Hyde, this neat little spot is nestled off the corner of a cable car line in the Nob Hill neighborhood. I first noticed it when I was on the cable car and saw their cute little chalkboard promoting happy hour every day from 5 - 7 p.m., which, of course, put it on my must try list. I was not disappointed. As a tourist, it was nice to find a local spot where the regulars wander in to hang out and just chill. If you want a nice spot to sit and relax and just take in the surroundings this is place to do it. Outdoor seating and a small, but comfortable setup is available inside. Wi-Fi is only available during the week, and they ask all laptop users to be courteous during lunch. The service is great, very friendly, and when our ordered was delayed - which I didn't even notice - our waiter gave us a free pitcher of sangria. Because our service was so great the first time and the sangria and the appetizer tasty - a small pita, pesto, chicken pizza - we went back for lunch. For lunch, I had the ham, fontina and sage sandwich on a toasted whole-wheat baugette, which was delicious. My companions also had similar sandwiches and everyone thought it was terrific - I highly recommend for a low-key, casual place with good service, good food, and a relaxing atmosphere.

LOVE this place. Best location, incredible wine list and small plates. Can't wait to return!

Very nice casual lunch with family

By K H |

We were wandering around Nob Hill area looking for a lunch option. We wanted the right options on food, outdoor seating, and not to long a wait. We saw the Nook from across the street, I was initially negative as their signage says cafe/ wine bar....with the wine bar telling me to try elsewhere. But we walked over to check the menu. They have a nice breadth of salads, small plates and sandwiches. We tried 3 of their small plates for the 5 of us to share. And 3 of us had sandwiches. I enjoyed everything we tried. My Pesto chicken sandwich was excellent. The bread and level of toasting was fantastic. Their greens were very fresh. One of our sides was their artichoke wrapped in prosciutto, very good. Their hummus was also very good, served with diced up olives. We sat outside, where they have a few tables organized. Their are two cable cars which run here, and every few minutes a car zips past. Very nice....we enjoyed. Enjoy!!

Good corner cafe

By BL53 |

We popped into the Nook Café as a last minute idea on a Sunday morning. Plenty of tables both inside and out. You walk up to the bar to order your beverages and meals. They serve the meals at your table when the food is ready. I had the waffles. My guest had a sandwich. Both were good. A number of regulars seemed to pop in, grab their coffee or meal then continue on their way. But it was a good place to sit and eat as well.

A good neighborhood place

By Joseph C |

The nook is a smallish bit of a hangout place, where people eat well prepared and tasty food with some using using their laptops, some sipping at a glass of wine. It’s a pleasant place, amiable, in a non touristy area of Hyde. The menu includes soups (I’ll post a picture with the wallboard, sandwiches, wine, the top menu item in 2017 was under $11, it does a brisk breakfast building. Lap toppers are asked to avoid the Four chair tables. It’s not a pickup place (we’re young 7O) but the customers are both mind your own business and people glad to have a conversation. It has a few chairs outside, but it’s mostly inside. If you’re in the neighborhood, drop in. I’m rating it high for what it is and being good at that. Don’t expect a 25 course haute cuisine meal.

Happy hour before the restaraunts!

Great Happy hour, really friendly staff and a perfect way to start your evening!

Watching the Cable Cars Go By

By W H |

We juked in here when the rain started when we were exploring and are so glad we did. Very tasty food. Lovely woman waitress who helped us sort out where to get water cutlery etc. - thank you. We loved watching the cable cars go by and locals walking their dogs. Wee gem . Prices ok for San Francisco and quality of food.

Quick breakfast

By Aimee T |

My mom and I ran into The Nook when we were exploring San Francisco, wonderful breakfast but was not impressed with our coffee drinks... She had a hot chocolate and I had a chai tea and they both tasted more like water than our drinks.

Great little corner cafe

By food_reviewer45 |

Had the pita pizza with pesto, chicken, tomatoes and fontina cheese. Very tasty and only $6.50 PBR beer $2! Even cheaper for happy hour 4-7 Order at counter and cook delivers when ready Bus your own dishes.

Vijay Kaul

Coffee and nibbles during the day and a candle lit wine bar at night. Great place for a quick bite during the day....helpful staff, inside and outside seating, number of singles sitting and working away. We had sandwiches for lunch...wide choice.

Fab little find

By kjc75 |

Walking about San Fran after being on the sight seeing bus and happened upon Nook. Gorgeous little cafe serving all sorts of delights. We shared three plates- humous and olive tapenade, artichokes with ham and goats cheese, and warm flat bread. Add a glass of wine and a seat outside in the sun and this is a place you could spend many an hour. Food was fresh, tasty and very well priced. Do go and try it!

Nob Hill coffee break on a rainy day

By cootiebugg |

A nice little hole in the wall to duck in and enjoy a good cup of coffee on a rainy afternoon. The sandwhiches looked good, so we decided to have lunch too. We both expected a little more flavor, but overall good.

Cute local joint with surprisingly good food

By SuitNflipflops |

Cute local joint with surprisingly good food (mainly sandwiches and salads) and coffee. Great place to sit outside, enjoy the sunshine, and wave to tourists rolling by on trolleys taking pictures of you. I wish the staff would be just a little nicer though.... You may come here every day but don't expect them do recognize you. And if you order something not directly off the menu, the guy making the sandwiches is likely to make a snippy comment (why? I'm not sure).

Great Location

By William S |

On a corner Cable Car line, it's a scenic palette of San Francisco history. The sounds of rolling on the rails and occasional clangy bell toll. Comfortable cafe' serves very good wine at mildly expensive prices. Full cafe' menu at upscale prices. Worth the effort to visit this place. Comfortable and private seating.

Perfect!

A hidden pearl of San Fransisco

By Espen Klævik-Pettersen |

I spent a week in SF for holidays, and Nook was definitely my favourite discovery. The food was amazing (try out the hummus or the cheese platter) and the locally sourced wine was exquisite, all at very affordable prizes. The ambience is good, the staff is very friendly, and the location is just perfect. The ideal hide-away at a hill where you can watch the cable cars come eking their way on the outside. Highly recommended.

Great coffee

By OlemCopenhagen |

After a climb up an down chinatown, this little treat, is a great spot for a rest and a coffee, and perhaps a sandwich. Loads of local with laptops, working, studying or even dating? Take it all in over freshly brewed coffee.

A neighborhood gem

By Eric M |

I love coming here when visiting San Francisco because I feel like a native. This is a neighborhood place with a casual vibe. The food is fresh and the service friendly. I've been here for breakfast, lunch, and an end-of-day snack and glass of wine over the years. I've been happy each time. There is no pretension here, just good food.

Locals paradise

By WyePhysio |

Found this on an internet search. Walked there from our apartment and it was well worth the effort. Excellent menu and service. More vegetarian but that is not a criticism as everything was fresh and superb. Fabulous watching the cable cars pass by. Recommend a visit.

New owners, better than ever

By Joseph C |

Rating for a neighborhood cafe. We have stayed for years when visiting San Francisco in the same place, about a block from the Nook, It’s good for breakfast, granola. Oatmeal, bagels and add ons galore. I personally prefer an omelet with cheese. For lunch or later, a range of excellent small plates, sandwiches, salads and specials of the day. The Nook was good before, new owners bring new energy and are very friendly. A good place for a glass or more of wine. During the day, tables tend to be occupied by a younger crowd making use of good Wi-Fi. It’s different place in the evening, more of a wine bar atmosphere.

Great wine bar and hangout!

By Evelyn V |

What a lovely and cozy SF historical and staple find . The ambiance lighting and modern Euro chic is artistic and calming. I was looking for a local hangout with friends and this wine bar proved to be just right for a Saturday evening. It features a pretty wide wine selection. The owner is also friendly and will tell you a story or 2 . Highly recommended.

Not what we expected

By bliss920 |

The name outside says: "Nook Cafe & Wine Bar" -- so we stopped in after dinner to grab some wine... but it was not at all what we expected. This is basically a small cafe that serves wine, hardly a 'wine bar' -- we ended up leaving without ordering a drink!

Hidden Gem

By Baerach |

We stumbled across NOOK while waiting for the cable car to arrive. The food was tasty and fair priced. The beer was very reasonably priced. Good selection on the menu and a nice friendly warm atmosphere.

Cozy, Good food too.

By expatjean |

What I liked is that I could get morsels I'd never tasted before--e.g. goat-cheese filled artichoke bottoms--along with a trusty raisin bran muffin.

Local café

By Thomas T |

This spot is perfect for someone looking to get some work done over a coffee and a small lunch. The space is a little small for a group but perfect for a quick coffee.

Quaint, charming and delicious!

By Alohagm |

At this local gem you can enjoy delicious, healthy fare as the fabled SF Cable Car rounds the corner full of shrieking tourist! It's a picturesque corner on Nob Hill with great photo ops. Stop here on your way to visit Lombard Street or hop the cable car to downtown, it stops right in front. I've tried almost everything on the menu here. In addition to the BEST latte in the hood, their breakfast sandwich and wrap and chicken hummus sandwich are total stand outs. They serve a variety of wines and feature bottomless mimosas on weekends! To be fair, I visit everyday... It's my local cafe. But we are always happy to share this little slice of san francisco with visitors.

We stumbled across this little café on-route to Lombard Street. It is a great little café serving a nice range of beverages and snacks. They cook a really good omelette. The service is friendly, the atmosphere relaxed and happy.

Chilled out and great coffee

By Jessica W |

I have passed by this place many times in my previous visit to San Francisco but never had the chance to enter. I went to the Nook for the first time yesterday and went back for some more of their great coffee today. They have free wifi from 7am-6pm on weekdays and both times I entered everyone was there with laptops. It seems like a really chilled out place to hang out for the afternoon. Their sandwiches are great and their coffee is even better. On the quiet side of town but you can see the cable car pass through every 5 mins which is cute.

Nice place, good coffee

By Chrysophylax_jp |

We found this place when we were quite exhausted after a long day in SF. I liked the atmosphere and the interior, can't say anything about the food here, we got only a coffee and a glass of water here. But from what I saw smoothies and food looked lovely and tasty. We were considering to stay for a glass of wine (it was about happy hour time), but we decided to leave. I think that if I ever go to SF again I'd be glad to come again.

Just a nice little place to stop

By Bob C |

My wife and I were in SF for 4 nights and found this little cafe on the first night. It's really local with guys sat around using the WiFi and making one drink last, and conversations striking up as other locals drift in. Nothing special, but comfortable and friendly. We had an evening meal there, choosing from a truly extensive and 'healthy' menu, and then in again for two breakfasts and a drink on the way back from Fisherman's Wharf. The cable car line rattles round the corner that the cafe is on going up to Nob Hill. Staff were friendly and the food was good. If you are walking back up Hyde from the Bay, it's a good place to refresh yourself after climbing that hill.
