Great food! Ordered the fajitas de pollo and fajitas de res to go, it was all amazing ! The handmade flour tortillas go perfectly with the food! Never disappoints! Highly recommend, a best try on 26th steet!

Try the Queso con Chourizo

By HelenaGuerra |

I love Nuevo Leon! Fantastic food, all fresh and very tastefull! Simple delicious! Great place and atmosphere, very economic! My favorite dish is the queso con chourizo (in fact is an appetizer, but it's huge)! The asado de puerco is very good, too! The restaurant is always full!

Delicious authentic Mexican food

My husband and I visited this restaurant on a Sunday afternoon. It was not too busy but the atmosphere was great. They had a live singer serenating the crowd. There's almost no need to order appetizers here as they bring you chips, two kinds of red salsa and a pico de gallo with little pieces of jalapeno; probably the best pico de gallo I've ever had!!! My husband ordered two chicarron gorditas. I ordered an order of pozole. Our meals were great, they brought out my pozole piping hot with all the fixings!! They also brought out a small serving of strawberries with yogurt completely free of charge. Our waitress was super nice, we enjoyed her!! We paid under $30 for all of our food, pretty great prices!!!!!!! I think we've found our regular Mexican joint next time we're in Chi-town!!

Almost Great!!!

Fou of us went here for a slightly late Thursday night meal. Arriving after nine the restaurant was not especially crowded. Service was friendly but a bit slow and understandably English was limited with our server. Complimentary chips and 3 kinds of delicious salsa was first brought to the table. Also a small with a tasty potatoes filling was complimentary. Chips and salsa were filled as needed. We ordered a variety of Tacos and Tortas. Normally I would not comment on Tortillas as they are just Tortillas. However the corn Tortillas were definitely a cut above any I have had in my many trips to Taquerias. They had a great corn flavor but also a bot of sweet flavor. The Torta bread was also a cut above most. The Pastor Torta I ordered ended up being filled with Steak instead. Rather than attempt to get the order corrected I stayed with it. Although very good in flavor there could have been more meat as most bites were overpowered with bread and topping flavor. Everyone else went with Steak Tacos. These were exceptional. I was left wishing that I had gone the Taco direction but would not have had the opportunity to have the wonderful Torta bread. On of our orders was completely missed but was quickly brought out after we pointed out the miss. For drinks we ordered Margaritas. These were also quite good. Decor of the restaurant is very pleasant. The restaurant is also clean. Outside of some minor communication issues an excellent meal at a reasonable cost. This is a definite return to eatery for us!!!

Have had much better Mexican food.

Came with wife and mother, after they turned down my choice of restaurants. I ordered Gordita asada, overloaded, pretty tasteless, but since I was 3 hours overdue for lunch, it satisfied. appetizer was chips salsas and pico de gallo. Pico de gallo had a kick, 2 thumbs up, all 3 salsas tasted good but didn't take it over the top. Waiter dumped a cup of ice water on my wife. Waitress was good.

This restaurant is great, it is not easy to find authentic Mexican food. This place has it and at a very reasonable price. Service is great as well.

AWESOME

Went here for dinner on the advice of an acquaintance. Loved the experience of being in the Little Village ... as a Canadian tourist its great to feel like you're in Latin America in Chicago. The service wa great .. we sat down and within seconds we were served nacho chips, salsa and pico de gallo. The food was GREAT ... everyone loved their meal ... I had pollo con mole, son had steak fajitas and husband had enchiladas ... and we even got arroz con leche gratis after the meal. Husband had a margarita and said it was one of the best he'd had ... NOT made from a mix to boot! Everything tasted fresh and home made ... loved it!

Marvelous Mexican Food

My husband and I visited this restaurant the other day on our way home from the doctor. We have had a lot of Mexican food and this was pretty good. I wouldn't say it was the best, but the food warranted about a 4.5 star rating. I have to say that their beans are to die for, we even took some home. My husband had the enchiladas and I had the combination platter (enchilada, tostada, taco, and tamale). Our waitress was great and super helpful.

Great dinner on Saturday night

I visited with four business colleagues. This is a very welcoming place. As soon as we sat down, we were given appetizers, chips, salsa, and other items. But watch out for the spicy salsa! We each ordered different dishes, and each was excellent. As a vegetarian, I had the bean tacos, and with the salsa, it was excellent We had beers, margaritas, and pina colada, And at the end, we had strawberries on the house. Thoroughly recommended

This restaurant by far has the best authentic Mexican food around! Staff is really friendly. Service is great. Prices are very reasonable. Live entertainment on the weekend. The only drawback is no parking but if you don't mind walking this restaurant is worth the trip and will not dissapoint.

Great Mexican Food at Great Value

By Muffiemaya |

We went here on a weeknight with a party of 7 people. The restaurant was bustling. We had excellent and friendly service despite the crowds. The menu is quite varied and large. Everything from the combination plate to fajitas was very well prepared and presented. The guacamole was just about the best I have ever had. The ambiance is loud and crowd friendly. The restaurant is anything but fancy. It is BYOB and cash only. It is remarkable value. We will go back again. It was worth a long trip for us. The food was that good.

Excellent Service, Fantastic Food!

By time time you have settled in your seat, you have already been served water, tortilla chips and five or six different types of salsas. After you have ordered, the food just keeps coming. The waitresses here are so efficient that you actually feel swept away and like the most important customer in the place. The food is authentic North Mexican Fare. Do yourself a favor and try this place. There is another locationon 18th street, which is overflowing with Yuppies. But try this location on 26th Street. I promise you will be impressed!

Awesome authentic food!

Great little place hidden in plain sight. Neighborhood can get sketchy, but during the day is very pleasant with many authentic touches of Mexico on the northern exposure of Chicago’s Southside. This place is AWESOME! Great food, great service, great people, great prices, PERIOD! Super friendly. Super quick! Very authentic look and music. Great place all the way around! Even clean bathrooms.

Good Service, Terrible Food

By charlek2016 |

Went here last night for dinner and am blown away at how bad the food actually was for a restuaurant that gets such hype and good reviews. We were greeted and seated immediately by the friendly staff. The place was full but not crowded. Decor was colorful and pretty typical of a Mexican restaurant in the city. Looking around, the place could definitley use a good cleaning and some TLC. The menus were filthy and sticky to the touch, as well as the table. Our server brought us each a flauta and a basket of chips and the variety of salsas and sauces. The flauta was ok, not very flavorful but hey it's complimentary. The chips were cold and stale and the salsa was just okay. I tried each of the 3 sauces and they were okay, nothing better than you can get at a grocery store. I ordered the combination platter to try a little bit of everything and can only say I was completely disappointed. The enchilada was luke warm at best and I could only eat a bite because of the temperature. The tamale was warm but not hot and all corn meal with a tiny bit of what could have been pork. The tostado and taco meat was unflavored and tasteless. Lots of shredded lettuce and tomatoes on each. My husband ordered the tamales and he could barely finish 2, they were all corn meal and barely warm. My daughter had fish tacos and said they were good but this was her pick and she likes everything as long as someone else is paying lol. My husband ordered a bottle of Modela and the "special" price of $5.50 in that area is outrageous. The staff was very friendly but the food was awful. There are so many places to eat in this area, people must came here due to name recognition becuase it certainly can't be the food.

Our first visit to the restaurant. The staff was friendly, their recommendations excellent, and the restaurant very clean. There was abundant parking on the street near the restaurant. I would highly recommend this restaurant for excellent, authentic Mexican food.

Real authentic Mexican fare -I ordered the beef skirt steak and it was tasty no need to order extra appetizers because they serve chips and fresh salsa but it's up to you they have variety of selections , price is very reasonable and take note they accept cash only also it's BYOB

Best Refried beans in Chicago

By roseb830 |

The Nuevo Leon Restaurant is a historic name in the Mexican community for good food at reasonable prices. The original on 18th St in Pilsen burned down, but this spot owned by a brother continues the tradition of great service. One of the highlights are the nachos, which feature the Nuevo Leon's refried beans, which continue to be fried in lard. No wonder they are sooo good. The food makes up for the lack of decorating, but a new mural on the building is eye catching. Guests are treated to a free appetizer with each meal and free dessert. If you like meat, the steak here is thick and juicy and some of the best at any Mexican restaurant. Service is fast and all the plates are served hot with spicy salsa if you like. Definitely worth the trip to the Little Village neighborhood.

excellent quality Mexican food

My meal was a very tender flavorful carne asada. The quality was superb. The other reason I like this restaurant is because of the friendly atmosphere. the staff makes you feel like home. It can be busy Sunday morning but definitely worth a short wait.

Nothing Special

Food was good and would eat there again, but didn't really stand out from other Mexican that I've had. Liked the little complementary appetizer and dessert.

We really liked the food and atmosphere of this Pilsen gem. Three fresh and very tasty salsas on the table. My 2-year old devoured the frijoles con chorizo which is super tasty. I had the Bistec A La Mexicana de Lomo which was ribeye in a super delicious stew. My wife misordered on her steak and eggs tacos, but it wasn't the food as much as it wasn't really what she wanted. We went on a Sunday evening and we did stand in a line for about 20 minutes. Even so, we definitely plan to go back.

While I did at one time...

While I did at one time visit a Mexican Restaurant that I felt was superior, I do not remember where I was in Chicago - or what the place was called. IMO, it is hard to find very good, authentic mexican food in Chicago - but when it is good - it is very, very good. The trek to Pilsen is well worth a visit to Nuevo Leon.

Great authentic food from Nuevo Leon

By Ricardo L |

Parking is a challenge, but the restaurant is excellent. The owner from Sabinas greets everybody at the door and he is very nice. He has stories about Sabinas, el Cercado and other towns of Nuevo Leon. Food is amazing. Service is friendly. Ambience is typical Mexican with mariachi music (recorded) and colors of the Mexican flag. My wife and I will be back soon!

Amazing food, service and atmosphere!

Amazing food, service and atmosphere! I'll definitely go back! The carne asada is superb! The Little Village neighborhood is great too!

Breakfast in La Villita

Very friendly family restaurant with good home made Mexican style food. Many restaurants have shortcuts when it comes to some of their staple dishes..Not here. Frijol machacado is clearly done the old fashion way. Very friendly staff and owners.. live music on Sundays adds to the experience.

Delicious comfort food in a friendly atmosphere set in a vibrant neighborhood

By olimer80 |

I read about this restaurant and how it has been a family-owned community staple of the Pilsen neighborhood, so I decided it would be a good place to go for lunch when I was on a work trip to Chicago. It was a drizzly, depressing day outside, but inside Nuevo Leon the colorful wall murals of sunny pueblos made things more cheerful. It's a big restaurant, and I was there for a late lunch so there were only a few tables seated--a couple of men having a lunch meeting, a family, two couples, all speaking Spanish. The proprietor came by and talked with people at tables, making it really feel like a community spot. As soon as I sat down and began looking at the menu, a man brought me chips, several kinds of salsa, a bowl of pickled vegetables, and a delicious meatball in spicy sauce as a complimentary appetizer. I was already happy I had chosen this place! The salsa was delicious--really spicy, just how I like it. I had trouble deciding on what to order because the menu was so extensive, but I ended up choosing a whole fish. It was delicious--fried crispy on the outside, and tender and meaty on the inside, served with a generous salad with avocado. I was given house-made flour tortillas to accompany it. The service was prompt and very friendly. I ordered one of the more expensive things on the menu--there's a range to accommodate everyone, from various kinds of tacos in the $8 range to steaks and fish (mine was about $17). After my big meal, a man dropped off a dish of fruit in cream topped with coconut shavings. I had eaten plenty, but it was a nice, generous touch! I'm glad that this restaurant rebuilt after being decimated by fire last year. The food and hospitality were well worth the trip.
