Amazing food and service made this a very enjoyable evening. We had large group (12+) and the service was outstanding!

We had dinner here on the night of the Texas Spring game. The menu was excellent. Family style orders (I will rank by order of awesomeness) all were good but the Dan Dan was spectacular. 1. Spicy Dan Dan Noodles 2. Brisket Fried Rice 3. Dry fried green beans 4. Mongolian Beef 5. Mala fried chicken 6. Char Siu Beer and wine selections were very nice. Classic hip hop and traditional Chinese decor rounded out a totally awesome Austin experience

We had an enjoyable dinner at this Asian/American fusion restaurant. This is not your typical Chinese restaurant. Most dishes are modest size, tasty and spicy. It is a limited menu but what they serve tastes good. Our waitress was quite knowledgeable and she was able to explain most dishes in great details. I gave it a 4 star rather than a 5 because we waited a long time for two dishes. It is also much pricier than a Chinese restaurant.

Two couples enjoyed the evening. All four of us agreed that the food was well above average. Excellent vegetarian and vegan options which were presented nicely by the staff. Good atmosphere. This is not a feedlot. The portions were just right.

Short and sweet: this is a nice little 'hole in the wall' with friendly servers, interesting look and feel, and tasty bar and grill style food.

Inventive and delicious food. Not another knock off cloned boring Chinese place. People extremely and sincerely friendly with zero pretense.

Amazing food for moderate prices. Honey prawns in this unusual cream sauce is like nothing i have ever had. Asked for a little extra spicey sauce on the side and they brought out homemade sriracha that was so delicious and fresh. Other dishes included kung pao cauliflower (wow-who knew vegan could taste so good?) seasonal veggie fried rice with baby carrots & edamame, and this amazing crispy chicken (glutenfree!!) appetizer.

I recently had dinner here with my wife, we went around 6 on a Sunday night and we were able to get a table without a reservation (Tip: we found out they do take reservations over the phone, but not via any on-line systems). Old Thousand is located in the rapidly gentrifying just East of I-35 on 11th St section of Austin, close to a number of other really good restaurants. I really like what they've done with the space, the lighting is a bit dark but they've captured a good Chinese hole-in-the-wall vibe (in a good way). The hostess was all smiles, and our waitress was attentive and did a great job explaining the menu and answering any and all questions we had. The dishes are bigger than dim sum servings, but they are not overwhelming and are meant to be shared. I highly recommend you do that if you are with like-minded eaters, it allows you to sample more of the menu (I really wish I had gotten to try the Brisket Fried rice with Micklethwait brisket) I started with their hot and sour soup, it was above average but not outstanding. My wife and I split the scallion pancakes, they were thinner and crispier than what we've usually had but they were excellent, as was the dipping sauce that came with them. I also ordered a special off their Chinese New Year menu, mussels in a yellow curry sauce. They were also excellent, the sauce had a little kick but overall was very pleasant and I was very happy with the meal overall. My wife also had the Eggplant Mapo dish, she wasn't in love with it at first but it grew on her as she ate it, and she took half home and finished it for lunch the next day and said it held up very well and had some added spiciness the day after. Prices are reasonable for the quality and servings, even with a cocktail or two we were out the door for about $60 with tip. Great food, great location, great design...highly recommend.

I had the Pineapple Chicken and split a cauliflower appetizer with my daughter. It was very spicy but great. The server was awesome and friendly.

Finally a Chinese restaurant that has a personality as unique as the cuisine! We had the good ick of hitting happy hour which boasts a fantastic menu at half price and were able to try a wide selection from the menu. The shishito peppers were a family fave, followed by the fried rice and egg rolls. Mostly I loved the friendly staff, charming and eclectic interior, and the variety of flavors available. I can see this being a great date place if you want to come off as someone “in the know”, which I am not. But still...

They’ve got a good happy hour with a good number of food and drink options at reasonable hh prices. Will be going back to try the entrees.

On a recent work trip to Austin I had done some research to find a great new spot to eat and all I can say is that this place lived up to all the amazing reviews and then some. To begin with the decor is adorable. A mix of shabby chic meets china town. Cosy and homey with a fun and casual vibe. The menu was not overwhelming which was a pleasant relief frankly but I can say without hesitation that every single suggestion we were given was absolutely delicious. The vegetable friend rice was out of this world. Light and airy, filled with yummy veggies some of which were shaved into chips. The clay pot was served to us like a work of art. And the flavours were out of this world. I highly recommend fried green beans and cauliflower. Ok who am I kidding. I recommend it all! Service was spot on and the prices were very reasonable given the quality of the food. All told, I loved this place and only wish I didn't live in another country so I could come back and enjoy it again!

The team at Old Thousand made it another great date night! We love coming here for THE BEST ASIAN food in Austin! The service always holds up to the top notch flavor combos and eclectic menu offerings! The atmosphere, the location, and the impeccable service keep us loyal-the good speaks for itself! Enjoy 😉

Brisket Fried Rice, oh how I dream of this dish. I have loved this restaurant from the very beginning. Great cocktails, great concept, fabulous food and service. When we came this past Saturday, Brandon was our server, and he told us about the new dim sum carts starting at 7 pm. What a fabulous surprise to have rolling carts and interesting dishes appear here and there to enjoy as a group. Every single dish here is fresh and delicious. Some standouts for vegetables are the bok choy, which can be really spicy on some occasions, but was just perfect last week, and thr green beans. Most dishes are fabulous, so try them ALL. Oh, and did I mention that parking is super easy and so close to downtown that you can eat and drink and then take a Lyft and enjoy more of the city.

Wow! Spicy food, people. Like someone built a fire on your tongue. The Cauliflower app is a no can do for me forever. I grew up in Texas eating jalapeños but this dish wins the heat award. Although I did eat every yummy bite with tears in my eyes. Loved the Brisket Rice which was a tad hot but easily managed. Very flavorful and full of good stuff. Enjoyed the crisp cool Cava which helped douse the flames. Find the parking lot behind them or across the street. It's free which is unheard of in Austin.

Very noisy and rowdy on the 2 occasions i visited. Fewer foo choices. The staff were okay. Not expensive. Food is just okay.

We discovered this place last minute during our trip to Austin. We were looking for a place to have a quick bite, and my wife was drawn in by their Char Siu (pork buns). Food was outstanding! We ended up having an appetizer (Chongqing Chicken) which ended up being pretty spicy, but delicious! Old thousand can get pretty busy on weekend nights, but even so we had a minimal wait to be seated at the bar. We will definitely return to try more delicious food!

Old Thousand is located just east of downtown on a cool part of E.11th St. and serves Chinese food with a twist. Every single thing I've had there is outstanding, but you MUST try the Brisket Fried Rice! It's made with brisket from the Mickelthwaite BBQ Food Truck down the street and is delicious! The quality of the food is matched by the service. Everyone works as if they are part of a team, and their product knowledge is impressive. AND there's ample parking behind the restaurant! If you can, make sure you make it to "Lucky Time"(their version of Happy Hour)...there are appetizers on the Lucky Time menu that are only available then.

The sweet and sour soup was to die for, super awesome. Every dish we had was incredible, brisket fried rice.....WHAT??? It's off the beaten path but a must DINE if you are in Austin TX

Good food and table service, once finally seated. Unfortunately Old Thousand over books, packs the place, and has to serve dinners at the bar, so don’t get comfortable at the bar with your drinks if you are waiting for table seating. Caleb confronted us and told us to get up and stand by the door. Wont be back, too many other great spots around that value the customers experience over bringing in their “new thousands”.

Finally got to sample this restaurant for lunch, after hearing raves since opening day. We picked a good time: hardly anyone there, so service was prompt and available. As everyone else has said, the menu is small, and I suspect the lunch menu is even smaller than the dinner menu. That said, we started with hot tea. I wish I remembered what it was (it involved oolong) because it was delicious. Served on a wooden board, it is very attractive, although the tea cups are teeny. I assume that's authentic. We started with Khao Man Gai spring rolls. There's not much original you can do with spring rolls. Fresh vegetables, nicely presented, with a tasty and spicy sauce. Still, spring rolls. Then Tomatillo Steamed Buns, with fried green tomatillos to die for. I'd eat them all day. We ordered Hanbao (spicy lamb sandwich), intending to split it. I didn't care for it; the ingredients tended to overwhelm the lamb, although the bun was excellent. So I ordered Orange Chicken against my better judgment. It's such a hackneyed dish. It came out way better than your run-of-the-mill dish, but again, there's not much original about orange chicken. This place is not cheap, and the portions are a manageable size, so don't expect to bring home leftovers. We'll be back to try other dishes.

The interior design is fun and funky. Free parking in the rear. The food is good. I like the limited lunch menu for price as dinner and brunch are a little too highly priced for Austin. The menu seems to change constantly. This is a fun place to order a few items to share.

During my recent visit to Austin, 4 friends and I decided to try out Old Thousand. We made a reservation (a must!) and met earlier for drinks. The menu is terrific so we ordered 8 different items and shared them all. DELISH! Highly recommend the cauliflower.

I have been reading great reviews of Old Thousand, so we tried it last week. It’s dark inside and not very appealing. The food was just ok, over spiced and uninspired. I have been to much better in Austin

I'm day dreaming about their green bean dish! Makes my mouth water just thinking about it! Old Thousand is the epitome of what Asian food can be when you mix intriguing Asian flavors with the freshest ingredients! Don't miss dining here! We tried the pork belly, green beans, hot and sour soup, fried rice, and the churro type dessert. Great cocktails. Loved the orange cider local beer as well. This is my new GO TO for quality oriental flavors!!

I went there for dinner with my wife and another couple. We sat and were immediately greeted by our server, who was super-friendly. Not phony but friendly. That set a great tone for the meal. We all tried one of the custom craft cocktails (their twist on the classics) and settled into the meal. We ordered 8-10 dishes that we shared. All were very good. Our server spaced out the food to make a leisurely meal. Table favorites were the Brisket Fried Rice and the Honey Prawn special. I keep going back to the word "friendly"...it really is a friendly vibe and I look forward to going back.

Austin has an awful scene when it comes to Chinese food. Although this isn’t your typical Chinese cuisine it’s extremely good and tasty, not your Panda Express that’s for sure, and if you want some bland tasteless food then go knock yourself out at PF Chang’s! Portion sizes are good in my mind - we shared two mains (small not large) & some fried rice along with a egg role which was more than enough. It’s a cool setting which always has good music and a good atmosphere. Staff are always friendly and great service. Personally I think this is one of the most underrated restaurants in the city.

Old Thousand has everything going for it, great food, convenient location and lovely atmosphere. I have really enjoyed everything I've eaten there. I especially liked the eggplant, gai lan, bok choy, honey prawns, cumin beef, and sun choke fried rice. The service and all the staff are very friendly and attentive.

This isn't your typical Chinese family-run strip-mall restaurant... What we tried seemed authentically flavored (we're anglo but have experienced Chinese restaurants in San Francisco, LA, Vancouver, and China, too) but presented in a modern, attractive style and setting. The green beans were our favorite, but the steamed buns were great, too (served deconstructed). Interesting cocktails and a nice wine list were appreciated. It's popular, so probably smart to get reservations a day or two ahead.

The server was uninterested and not upfront about what dishes they were out of for the day. Beef with pineapple and pork ribs were our favorite entrees. The dry fried green beans were our favorite starter.

Vegetarian friendly. Unique. Good atmosphere. Good location. Good service. Excellent desserts. Parking around corner is convenient.

Five of us dined on a week night at this fairly new, east of I35, restaurant and found it quite busy after 7 pm. We had a 30 minute wait for a table. A couple of our party had dined here before and highly recommended it. The menu is not extensive but sufficient to please most I would think. The food we had was all good—orange chicken, pineapple beef, and pork belly entres, along with pancakes and cucumber salad for appetizers—but things arrived in rather haphazard order. The waiter, who was very good, apologized, explaining they were unusually busy—and brought a complimentary appetizer while we waited and ended with a complimentary dessert. Had the company not been good and with no schedule, it would not have been a very pleasant dining experience. This is not a cheap eats place but obviously very popular place for the young professional and hipster crowds. Bar/drink menu is more extensive than food.

We visited this establishment for lunch on New Year’s Day and were pleasantly surprised by the inventive cuisine. We especially liked the crispy pork buns, flat noodles, orange chicken and the hot and sour soup. The place is clean and inviting and the service was pretty good if not warm. All in all we would recommend it for lunch.

Met with some friends and their kid for dinner. Place was clean and crowded, so it seemed a good spot. Food was a bit pricy for what we got, and food taste was lame and too spicy. A disappointment to say the least. Wont be going back again for sure.

With chefs from the great Uchi, the Chinese eats are imaginative and different from that at Wu Chow. All excellent. Almost half are vegetarian. Good wait staff works in teams, like Uchi. Old Thousand is informal, there is a good buzz. You come out feeling good Get there by 5:45 pm-no reservations. Lunch and dim sum are expected in spring

There are some amazing things at this restaurant and some things that were not good at all. Let me start with the amazing. The General Tso's chicken was hands down the best I have ever had. We also had the Char Siu which was pork belly with all the toppings that was really tasty. Now let me finish with the not so good. The brisket fried rice was dry and not that tasty, the mapo eggplant was way too spicy and overpowered by the spice to let you taste the real flavors and the worst by far was the kung pao cauliflower. Was beyond overspiced and a hot mess. So hot that it was inedible and I love spicy.

This restaurant is one of my favorite places to eat in Austin. The food, service, and ambiance are first class. My favorite dish is the steamed buns (char siu bao)!! The flavor and ingredients are outstanding, and they give you so much you can have that as your meal, but i suggest ordering it for the table. Every time I come here I try to order a different plate because the food is just that good and consistent. Since the price is a little more than regular Chinese food, I do not come here as often as I wish I could. If you are in the area and have the ability to come to Old Thousand, I highly encourage you to try one of my favorite spots in Austin, Texas!

We had dinner at this place and were surprised by the quality and taste of the food. I had honey prawns and my husband a citrus glazed chicken, both shared spicy cauliflower and rice. Delicious! and now they are open for lunch as well! Definitely worth a visit.

I have read all the great reviews of Old Thousands and loving Asian food so 8 was looking forward to dinner here. The egg roll was served very hot with an interesting dipping sauce, however it was tasteless. I had their take on sweet and sour pork, which was over spiced with hot peppers which was the only flavor I could get. Overall a disappointing visit. My waiter said the menu would be changing in a few days, hopefully that will be better.

very good food, fresh and well-prepared and good service and cool atmosphere. Check out artwork on way to restrooms,
Not worth It, Bad Service
I phoned in an order, one main course and two sides. They ignored me upon arrival and then made me wait over 50 minutes when they had more staff than customers. After all that, the lady finally brought me my order and sarcastically thanked me for waiting patientlY.
