Nice atmosphere but the...

By Cynthia S |

Nice atmosphere but the food is questionable. I know two people who have gotten sick after eating there. Watch out. Good for drinking, not so much for dining. I guess if it's mid-week and you're looking for a reason to call in sick (and not feel guilty for lying) just have the pizza. Cheers!

No service!

By George S |

You order at the bar, sign your check, take a number and wait. Three of us together. Two orders wrong, all slow. No offer for drink refills. No napkins on table. Very expensive for a burger or sandwich of not to good quality. I won't go back. Better choices available.

Great patio, good food, excellent beer selection

By Hog1 |

Went during FPSF, and Houston was surprising not too hot out. The beer selection is very good, with plenty of local offerings. For general bar food it was very good viddles. Less pretentious than some of the other places i visited in that area.

somewhat disappointing...

By Olga |

This is the second time we gathered in this Coffee House and while it suppose to be really hip, the food is just ok. My Brussel Sprouts were $8.00 for a small small bowl with half of it being cauliflower ( on the mane in tiny letters). The beer on draft also $8 - $10. The Ruben was just OK..... for a small neighbourhood place it was a pricy meal that just did not shine...

Great Houston Heights Local

By Neneb |

One quick right turn in busy traffic on White Oak on the 4th of July, landed us in Onion Creek. Nothing spectacular from the street, but this little joint does great food and great cold beers. It was a welcome respite for this weary Australian visitor!!! Houston Heights is a great spot to wander around and Onion Creek - a fabulous haven to retreat to for a quiet drink and good burger (and a big generous salad!!!).

Saturday Brunch

By 55Buzzard |

Best migas, hands down! You can try other places, but you can't beat OC Brunch for quality, consistency and cost.

Delicious food

By RQuillin |

My husband and I stopped by the Onion Creek Coffee House for lunch. We both ordered sandwiches which were some of the best ones we have had. My salad was delicious and my ice tea was fresh. It's a nice a cozy restaurant with plenty of room for everyone with the outdoor patio. The service was excellent.

Pleasant Place

By mislouro |

The Onion Creek is really nice. Well decorated and with a pleasant terrace. Went for brunch and mimosas, it was good.

Sunday Brunch

By Ann_Robison |

Very crowded. Feels like Auatin. The atmosphere is great and so is the music but the food is just average.

Great variety of beers!

By Johandy U |

Looking for good quality food and a great variety of local and imported beers? This is your spot. During the weekedays most restaurants in this area close at 9pm at the latest EXCEPT this place. They stay opened until midnight on weekdays I believe. Food is mostly the fast food type but with great/local ingredients.

Great place to sit out and enjoy

By riflemanHouston |

Great place to hang out! We always enjoy going to Onion Creek... the food is always good, the sides are interesting and flavorful, and the beer selection is exceptional.

Breakfast and More

By Thom P |

We went for breakfast, which was not bad. You order at the cash register. Our order came out fairly quick, although we were there just as breakfast was winding down. Arrived just before lunchtime on Friday. Sorry to have missed the reportedly very good "Fried Chicken Friday"!!!!! Great beer selection for a coffee house. Very rustic and homey inside. Nice outside seating area and fair amount of free parking.

Wonderful Brunch

By AmyLyn76 |

Highly recommended for brunch or anytime you want to have a drink on the patio. On Sundays there is a cute market in the parking lot. Nice selection of beer and frozen mimosas!

Delicious!

By KatyGardener |

Best burger I've ever had - The Rooster! Came with a side salad. Great outdoors atmosphere on the patio.

onion creek

By 325rickn |

The appetizers were average at best. They were overpriced for the quantity and quality. The service was adequate and the noise level was way to high to be able to carry on a conversation.

LOVE

By Linda J |

The food and music is wonderful. There is a wonderful bar. I love sitting outside there on a nice day. My first choice place to go eat when I am in the Heights!

Healthy Dinner and Astros!

By Denise K |

We’ve never been here, but have enjoyed their sister location, Cedar Creek. I ordered a goat cheese salad and my husband had a turkey burger. Both were delicious!

Car broken into

By dennisnwright |

All of these Onion Creek places always have vagrants close by. The owners also own a trailer park across the street from the Onion Creek place at West Nineteenth Street and Beall. Lots of cars get broken into over there. Avoid Craig Holcomb and his establishments.

For take out orders using credit card - check your bank statement carefully

By restrapo |

Ordered takeout. Establishment charges the standard 3% for using a credit card that I see everywhere now. Nothing unusual about that. However, upon checking my bank statement, I noticed the established also charged $1.54. I would assume this was a forced tip even for take out order. I did not authorize the charge. Shadowy business practice. Perhaps the new normal during our post pandemic days to charge customers ordering at a counter a forced tip without customer being aware. Scary time for consumers. Unable to recommend.

Nice spot for brunch

By Kathleen H |

Went to Onion Creek for brunch with the family (grown children). Even though it was still a little hot, we sat outside under the shade of an umbrella. Both breakfast fare (lox and bagel) and lunch (grilled chicken sandwich) were wonderful. Definitely will be back.

Bike ride beer and nachos

By Andypequeno |

Went with some friends for a bike ride and stopped in here for a pint and a snack. They gave a good selection of draft beers and they made some good nachos. The place has a great relaxed atmosphere in a nice area of Houston. I will definitely return when we don't have a few hours of biking to do so I can sample some more beers and the rest of the menu.

If you are looking for a cool outdoor cafe with a great vibe, look no further than this place in the Heights. Food was amazing and we had the brunch. Wish I had more time to go back for the regular menu.

Relaxing vibe

By JeffLowney |

Met customers after work. My first time and I really liked it. Drinks reasonable, appetizers well above average, and staff very friendly. Parking could be an issue if it’s busy. Definitely will return!

Fun place to meet friends - Great nachos!

By Shellye C |

Onion Creek is a fun place to meet friends for drinks and food. They have a dog-friendly patio and a great selection of craft beers available. There is also a good selection of regular beers and cocktails to choose from as well. Staff was very friendly.

Pets or no pets?

By plsitton |

Decent food but they need to get their act together on pets! After seeing several on the front porch, we brought our 15 lb dog and were USHERED rudely to the side area. Next time we came, there again were dogs on the front porch! REALLY????

Lazy Day hangout

By Jays911 |

I love the Houston style of hangouts. You know, ice houses, bar/grills, etc. This is an all day joint. They serve breakfast, and emphasize coffee, but as others have noted, it is actually a place to drink, graze and hang out. Our group of four spent a couple hours here today. When we arrived, it was raining, and we sat on couches inside (there are also tables, booths and a bar). Then the sun peeked through, and we moved to a picnic bench outside. There were TVs everywhere, but the focus is on socializing. We shared the great goat cheese and sausage pizza, and the ladies had side salads, one a small Caesar, the other a kale and quinoa version (healthy and highly recommended). They also have a plethora of sandwiches, burgers and the like. There is a good beer selection (mainly domestic--more European beers are needed, in my view). I recommend the Scrimshaw. The ladies had frozen mimosas. It is fun to people watch, as the Heights draws a wide variety of folks. Dogs are everywhere. There was also psychic jewelry and crawfish for sale. A real potpourri. The folks are friendly, and the grub is good. A great place to unwind.

Birthday lunch gathering

By David J |

We visited this place on a Monday around 12:30ish. I believe we escaped the lunch crowd. Absolutely loved the place and the food. I think they make food fun! We were 4 adults, and a 13 and 10 year old. Everyone got something different and it was a delightful smorgasbord for the taste buds. This place reminds me of the places you see on Diners Drive Inns & Dives.

Great local hangout.

By MAB82 |

Learned about this local spot with excellent local and regional beers on tap. Great hot dogs, burgers, and fried pickles to name a few food items.......and awesome potato salad! Lots of outdoor seating under the trees, which was very comfortable after a recent cool front. They also have inside air conditioned seating. Definitely a great place just to hang out with friends and drinks.

Good food, but show some patients

By Mark B |

Our first visit to Onion Creek Café was for a late Sunday brunch. The visit started off on the wrong step when another customer drove in from the other side and took the parking space that my wife and I were waiting for. Fortunately for us and the car of the motorist who took our spot, another spot opened up. Yes, parking can be an issue here, so show some patients. I can see this place being a headache when crowded. Once we got to the counter, they did a great job with catering to our wants. We enjoyed our meal too. And since dogs are welcomed in a portion of the outside seating, our Maltipoo will join us next time.

Atmosphere is great.

Decided to eat in the Heights and was not disappointed with our selection. I went with the Maple Chicken and my significant other chose the breakfast bowl with brisket. The Maple Chicken was delicious but my girl was not to impressed with the breakfast bowl

Very Good Food, Casual Patio

By ST L |

We enjoyed our Anniversary weekend at this casual place after finding it by chance after shopping in Houston. We were just looking for a snack, but after seeing what was coming out of the kitchen, we ordered the Italian sasuage, goat cheese pizza and the Sabine salad. Both were actually BETTER than the fancy French food that we had at another restaurant on Sunday. You order your meal and beverage at the bar. Beer selection is on the chalkboard up to the right of the bar. (Young, darkheaded bartender was our only server, so he got the average rating for service and I rounded up based on the rest of the experience). Although it was pretty busy, we were able to have enjoyable conversation out on the patio and enjoyed watching the people and cars go by in this lively neighborhood. It isn't fast food, but we received our order before we had finished our beer, so we were pleased. We were so impressed with Onion Creek, we tried another of the Creek family today. Cedar Creek, just a few minutes away, was bigger and our college age kids would like it as a place to watch football and the Sunday frozen mimosa special was great, but we weren't impressed with the turkey burger that we ordered. We will definitely visit Onion Creek again and try out some of the other places on White Oak while we are at it. Fun area.

dinner and drinks outside!

By annieb40 |

Coffee house? Really? We ordered a pizza and a hummus plate at the counter with a couple of beers then retired to the ample courtyard to wait for our meals. There are tv's and a bar outside and lots of tables. Great p-lace to hang out! Meals were brought out to us and they exceeded our expectation! Delicious little pizza and the hummas plate also had a bruschetta like salad with it. There were 2 of us and we could not finish those two dishes.

Just OK

By worldfamousjeff |

We stopped here on the way out of Houston after my wife ran the Houston Marathon. I didn't have much of an expectation and it didn't leave much of an impression. The beer selection was almost all from Texas, which is fine. I was pleasantly surprised to see one of Austin's finest from 512 Brewery. The food was pretty standard pub grub. I had a buffalo burger that was OK, but which I wouldn't order again. The outside seating area was nice, especially since it was a gorgeous day. I think that is Onion Creek's best quality.

Fine burgers and beer

By SBF2 |

I prefer table service and not ordering at the bar. However, the staff is helpful and friendly and food is delivered to the table. Great beer selection. Nice burger menu

Overpriced food, yuppiefied crowd, at least good beer selection.

Great charm, Good food

By MintRob |

Went for mid morning breakfast on a Thursday. Atmosphere and charm - Great. Trendy, old school and rustic. Outdoor sitting has plenty of overheard tree and umbrella coverage making it pleasurable. Country music from the 70s and 80s quietly playing in the background. Nostalgic and cozy. Not great for large groups above 10 people. Food - Had the cuban breve coffee, brisket breakfast taco, and hangover taco. All very good and would absolutely go back tomorrow.

lunch with family

By JscottHouston_Texas |

Love this rustic Austin Style place. I had a great dish that was kale, quinoa and grilled salmon! Yum and healthy! Young children can play Mrs. Packman (or last time I was there). Great for family or adults!

Good place to meet friends for a bite and beer

By Larry G |

Onion Creek is a hopping place on the weekends, day and evenings. lots of outdoor seating beneath the shade of trees. Very casual, great place to meet up with some friends for lunch or social hour. Food and drinks are ordered at the bar with the food brought to your table. Typical pub style food, but I must say is it pretty good pub food. Good selection of local craft beers and quite a selection of bottled beer. Let me say they make one of the best hotdogs I have ever had. All in all a good place for locals to visit and enjoy.

Onion Creek: Good Food and Beer, but Spotty Service is a Problem

By Great_Beer_Now |

Houston’s Heights area has an abundance of places to dine and drink and one of them is Onion Creek Coffee House Bar & Lounge. An establishment known for its food as much as for its beverages, Onion Creek is a popular hangout for locals and others who want some good tasting bar food and a wide selection of beer. Onion Creek Coffee House Bar & Lounge has three different menus- breakfast, brunch, and dinner- and customers will find the usual assortment of bar foods like burgers, pizza, hot dogs, sandwiches, salads, etc. plus a few surprises. The establishment sells coffee, tea, and some good coffee specialty drinks. Portions are nice and the price is fair. Probably the best reason to visit Onion Creek Coffee House Bar & Lounge is for the beer selection and I know many people who visit for this reason alone. Guests will find an abundance of craft beer, arranged on the menu by style, with a good number of options in draft and bottled/canned form. Whatever your preference in craft beer, there is something here to match your individual tastes and this is certainly one of Onion Creek’s strong points. Where Onion Creek Coffee House Bar & Lounge loses points, however, is with service. My experiences have been inconsistent, ranging from excellent to inadequate to poor. My most recent visit was on a busy Saturday evening, but that is no excuse for the subpar service we received. I couldn’t get hold of a beer menu and was told by the waitress to get one from someone else when they were finished with it. Not good. Then, to top it off, my wife was never served the food she ordered at all. We ended up leaving early as a result. In spite of the difficulties with service at Onion Creek Coffee House Bar & Lounge, I still recommend it for an occasional visit. The food is quite tasty and the beer selection is excellent. Just try to visit when the establishment is a little less crowded and you should be fine.

We sat outside and enjoyed the evening. I had cappuccino. A large cup with lots of foam. A good taste and flavor. The music was a little loud and it was hard to talk to people across the table or to hear aboutupcoming backpacking ideas.

Hoppin' Spot in The Heights!

By West_Tx_54 |

Great selection of beverages and a friendly vibe - fun atmosphere at this neighborhood collecting point... Local brews including non-alcoholic St. Arnold's rootbeer - and coffee. It is more about the scene than food, which is standard bar fare, indigenous to the area. Great place to hang with friends and sip! Love the signs about the snakes and snapping turtles - which is a true warning for the natural setting along a creek, in the trees... And this is in the middle of the city, yet!

Like to wait in lline around smokers

By Donald R |

The meal was fine, but the place has a lot of issues you should be aware of 1) There are no servers so be prepared to wait in line. They bring you your food, but don't take orders. If you are wit a group, plan on having half the group always gone to order food or get another drink. 2) They allow smoking everywhere. They said they don't but with no wait staff, the smokers are wherever they want to be. We were surrounded by smokers. 3) people bring their dogs, which is fine, but some could not control their pet, so there was a constant do fight going on around us. The owners were so into themselves that they failed to control their dogs. The food and beer selection is good, but between standing in line, smelling smoke, and dodging dogs, I would pass on going here.

Great place for hamburgers

By nolaaddict |

This is a great place for hamburgers. Their Big Nasty burger is to die for! Finally got back there this weekend. My husband and I had been longing for their "Big Nasty" burger and it did not disappoint. Drool worthy wonderful. The French fries are great too. If you are in the Heights area of Houston, you have to go there.

It's like being in Austin, but in Houston

By Angela S |

The food and drinks here are awesome! I love the the atmosphere. The staff is a bit snotty to me but not intolerable and it is totally offset by the food!

Casual atmosphere but good food

By jswflights |

Onion Creek is a casual and Austinesque type of atmosphere. The food, however, is tasty and flavorful. I had the veggie tacos, and these are wonderful. Cyclist and runners alike frequent here on Saturday mornings. The service can be a bit slow, do pass them up if that is an issue for you

Friday nights at OC

By Adam F |

This is our happy hour hangout on Fridays after work. The patio area is the reason this place is as popular as it is. There are better spots to find your favorite craft brews but the beer selection at Onion Creek is good enough and there's a full bar if you've had a long week. The menu is decent but we rarely deviate from the dirty nachos (now called Mr. Ho's Nachos). You don't go here for haute cuisine or obscure microbrews, you go here for the patio, the atmosphere, and the friendly staff!

Perfect Burger and Fries

By Hudsonbucky |

We were visiting friends from Houston who brought us here for dinner. The food was wonderful and the beer was cold. What could be better! I would've given it 5 stars but our table was never cleaned. It has a nice relaxed atmosphere, a great place to go to kick back and have a good burger or hotdog!

Have a "Big Nasty" and a wide selection of Texan beers

By Renaud_Texan |

The "Onion Creek" is located in one of the nicest neighborhood of Houston. It's the perfect place to share a beer and a burger with friends.

Why Must I Wait In A Line?

By zeke h |

I've never been to a restaurant/bar/coffee house that has no servers. At Onion Creek you have to stand in line at the counter whether it's to place a giant food order or to get a whiskey and sprite. It wasn't too much of a pain, just a hassle that made no sense. The best part about this place is the plethora of outdoor seating which is nestled right into the Heights. The sweet potato fries are awesome, but be sure to order them with honey mustard, or you might be standing in line again lol. Give this place a try, especially if you have a large group and want nice outdoor seating. I'll be back to try their coffee. Enjoy!

Outside seating is great & food is average

By jfcdallas |

The atmosphere outside is great when it is not too HOT nor HUMID, great for people watching as well. Nice variety of food, burgers are great come out hot and the fries are always on point - hot & tasty! Steak & potato night is some what crazy, especially with the toppings tray (butter, cheese, bacon, etc) being uncovered, sometimes the flies outside get crazy, so I opt out of that meal. Other than that all my other meals - cheeseburgers, nachos, sandwiches have been great.

good burgers

Great atmosphere, good food

By lonestarbassclarinet |

The atmosphere is great, the food good. The parking is something to work on, though. The lot is small, and sometimes parking on the street is needed. They had a large selection of hot dogs, with lots of different toppings, all on a homemade bun. We were very impressed with the hot dogs we ordered. The only thing I was unsure about was if we get free refills on drinks or not. I did not see a self serve soda fountain (we got our initial drinks when we ordered).

Chill Bar

By tazman1099 |

Full bar and about twenty beers on tap, including many local brews. Very reasonably priced for the area with most beers $4-5. It has the coffee house feel, but with better drinks! Friendly staff was helpful and willing to let you sample the beers before buying. However, when I closed my tab there were extra drinks on my bill. The gentleman paying after me had errors too, but his was missing drinks he ordered. Bartender quickly took a drink off my bill to make the total right, but check your bill for accuracy before paying!

Definitely recommend

By dg2014jg |

Good food in a very relaxed setting. Hippy/bohemian vibe so no need to overthink the dress code. Would go again if in area.

Frozen mimosas, fried pickles and ranchero cobb is my trio!!!

By Marilu M |

Love this place! I am on the go all day long visiting jobsites and I make it a point to be in the heights area in order to make this my late lunch spot. I intentionally skip breakfast so I can fully enjoy my drinks and meals. This place is awesome! It has great staff and the ambiance is great. I kinda feel like at home here. Feel free to take your laptop down and get some work done. Had their nachos just to change it up recently and I was only aye a few bites and was forced to say calories poorly spent. Other than that I have been very pleased. Brunch and evenings are best when heat comes a knocking at the door. Enjoy!!!

Ahhh if it was only closer to home!

By mexicanbadger |

After reading the reviews I stay with the one about "love to hang out after work on Friday " which would I totally do if it wasn't so far away. Food is really good, beer selection great, but it is a chill and hang out place. Which means if u plan to visit don't be super hungry cause it will be a 45 min wait for food. But such an amazing hang out place!!! So I would be a local each Friday at 5 every weekend unwind for an hour with a beer (or beers) and wait for my food. Music selection easy listening and so inviting! Will come again 4 sure!

Lunch at Onion Creek

By Andrew B |

Picked up lunch to go. The sandwich was very good. Would love to come back and hang out on the patio. It looks like there was a great beer selection. Plenty of food options. Can't way to go back.

Chill venue with great patio

By Monica P |

Be prepared to wait in line and wait awhile to get food, but grab a drink and relax on the patio. Come for brunch. The frozen mimosa is a super popular drink. I personally really like their iced coffee. Can't go wrong with the menu items.

Makes you feel like you...

By Dana K |

Makes you feel like you are in Austin with the atmosphere. Can't remember much about the breakfast though.

Roach on the table

By kelley34HoustonTexas |

This was not my first choice but usually the place is ok. The staff is a little too laid back for me and after seeing so many flies in the restaurant -- I should have turned around then but... We were there and going to have a nice summer lunch, I guess the resident roach had the same idea. My thought is if there are roaches on the tables, I wonder what the kitchen looks like. I will not be returning any time soon.

Nice patio when the weather is pleasant

By MLPerry |

I went with several lady friends for lunch while we were in town for a football game. I had the Reuben sandwich with a side salad. The salad dressing was delicious, the Reuben was fine. Nothing spectacular but nothing wrong with it except maybe a little light on the meat and heavy on the kraut. Two of the ladies had chicken wings and pronounced them good. The big hit was the mahi tacos, which were beautiful and plentiful. Order at the counter and they bring your food. The indoor dining area is small and gets crowded, but there is plenty of shade on the patio.

Great food and atmosphere

By scott s |

Had a group of five. Everyone ate something different and we all enjoyed our selections. From fried pickles to outstanding salads, four types of burgers and hot dogs, reuben sandwich, eight types of pizzas to select from, etc. Loved the look of the place as well. Who wouldn't give thumbs up for a John Belushi poster in his Animal House college sweater? Everything is reasonably priced. Located in the Heights. They have several other restaurants owned by the same group with different menus that should be visited.

Great patio but uninspiring menu!

By Cheryl G |

Love the patio. We sat inside because it was 95 degrees. They have table service outside and you order at the bar if you are eating inside. They were not that busy so we didn't have a problem with waiting in line to order. My main issues are with the menu. It has a dark background, a lot on it and small writing in a pretty dark establishment. They need to immediately make them larger and more legible. Luckily we arrived right before happy hour was over and I was able to get the chicken street tacos. They were very good. I got one on flour and one on corn. The thin flour tortillas were far better. The Brussels sprouts appetizer was not very good. I would take them off the menu. But it was hard for me to find anything on the menu that really inspired me. Go back to the drawing table. It is mainly burgers, sandwiches, salads... Boring. I got the frozen mimosa with a red zinfandel shot. Beautiful drink but I wouldn't get it again. If you want a beer and a burger on a nice patio, this could be the place for you. I want all that and some good menu options. I was with 4 other people and nothing of note to mention. Very ordinary food.

Great Hangout - Good Food

By Jim S |

Although it bills itself as a "coffee bar and lounge" it is more of a Texas grill and café. This is one of the Creek Company restaurants. There are Cedar Creek, Dry Creek and Canyon Creek as well. The Set-Up: Onion Creek is located in heights and like all of the Creeks, Onion Creek has a casual Austin Texas theme. In addition to inside seating there is a large deck in front with a view of White Oak. Parking is limited. There is a bit of parking in the back, but at peak times you will be fighting for parking on White Oak and the side streets. Orders are placed at the bar and you are given a number to place on your table. Service can be a bit slow during peak times. The Food: Don't expect anything fancy. That said; their hamburgers, hot dogs and sandwiches are great and I have never been disappointed. My personal favorites are the Classic Burger and the Chi Dog. The burgers are always delivered cooked just the way I requested. There is also a breakfast menu. OC also has a good selection of beer on draft. Something like a dozen or so on draft in addition to bottled beer, wines and mixed drinks. OC is a great place to meet friends or just people watch. Overall rating is a 4 and 1/2 pips.

Great atmosphere and very tasty food

By Randy D |

There was five in our group and we all ordered different things. When we finished there was no food leftover. From the Hot Dog w/great onion rings, to the Yard Bird Sandwich to the Street tacos, this hideway place is worth going to.

Great Happy Hour drinks and prices

By kelley34HoustonTexas |

The Friday night was warm yet bearable in Houston. We enjoyed a few drinks on the patio and had a nice app. In the past the food has been ok, but tonight the food was good, service fast (unusal) and priced right.

Good place to meet and hang out

By Beenthered0nethat69 |

Met there several times with local people. Food always has been good. Mostly had Burgers or a salad. Bar food, but well made. Service always attentive. You either can go to the bar and order there or you will be taken care of from the waiter. A good place to return.

Nice place

By christpost |

The Onion Creek is a nice restaurant. Good selection of food and very big selection of beers. Nice patio. Decent service. Good place to hang out.

Good food

By RkblyJamesM |

For a place we use to be regulars at it's not quite the same, good food, but not as good as before. The growth of the area makes it difficult to get there too. Still worth checking out.

Deceiving Name - Great Food/Fun Place

By ronijofrazier |

Not sure why it's called just a coffee house because there is soooo much more to the Onion House. Frozen Mimosa was great for a very hot day. We ordered buffalo cauliflower which was really amazing! Had the yard bird chicken sandwich with fries. As well super tasty. All in all an great experience with good food. They also had live music and a flea market going on! This was on a Sunday for brunch.

Good Hangout

Visited with friends before a concert at White Oak Hall nearby. Great selection of craft beers in a laid back place. Burgers, salads and sides were all very good. Enjoyed our time here and would do it again.

This is a little gem of a place that I love. When I am in the Heights, this is my go to place. Fried Chicken and red velvet waffles, scary delicious, and my friend had a breakfast pizza that was presented beautifully. The large cappuccino is as big as a fish bowl and delicious. The eclectic interior the friendly staff, and the fresh market they sometimes have on Saturday's keep me coming back for more.

Great food friendly service. Foodie from NY food was very good. We had chicken and waffles, tacos and eggs. Frozen mimosa and Bloody Mary shouldn't be missed.

What's It Worth To You?

By Erin M |

I love, love, love Onion Creek. Let me just get that out of the way. It's got Austin nostalgia, a great patio, good coffee and a nice beer selection, tasty food, and an overall pleasant vibe. It's a busy spot. Talk buzzes in the air. Interesting people mill around up to the counter and back to their tables. Sunday brunch frozen mimosas and steak nights are slam dunks. Sports play on the few tvs that are inconspicuously hung for die hard fans. You will have fun here. First though, you have to park. Next, you have to order. Then, you have to pay for your order. Finally, you have to find a seat. None of these are easy pills to swallow. Parking can be a chore in the Heights depending on the time you go. We went on Sunday morning and my husband almost gave up if it weren't for my insistence. Standing at the counter to order is a little pressure-y if you don't already know the menu. People are waiting and you've got to just order. I like to peruse my menu and my man is a picky eater so the counter service here was a bit too hectic given the tight space and number of customers. The prices for drinks can be steep. A frozen mimosa will set you back $8 and a burger is about $11. Not Earth shattering, but pricey for a patio bar and coffee house. It's not impossible to find seating, even if it's crowded, but you may end up inside or on the end of a long table where another couple is sitting. I haven't been in Houston in a long time. Onion Creek still delivers all the high notes of Sunday Funday. I'd do it again and again despite all these obstacles. Totally worth it, in my opinion.

Laid back, tasty food, good presentation

By Chris B |

So you're tired of the same old Applebee's, Chili's and Panera Bread crap you can get anywhere around Houston. Why don't you challenge yourself to get a few blocks off the highway and visit this great café. The menu has a little bit of everything. Portions are good. Large selection of beers. "Austin" feel. Great place to meet somebody, be alone, take the family and to watch other people. Price/Portion ration is fair, there are LP's hanging on the wall and hey...there's an old Mrs. PAC Man/Galaga sit down video game. I've really enjoyed both times I have been here recently. I've been once by myself and the second time I took the whole family.

Sunday brunch

By toddmyers |

Well... first day we saw sun in HOUSTON in a week and this was a GREAT spot for outdoor brunch!! Live music on the patio was awesome, and the frozen cocktails are great! If you order anything with the brisket, you will NOT be disappointed!! Chicken and waffles was also money!! Really nice spot in the heights and everyone had yummy food and drinks. If you’re in the area it’s a don’t miss, great brunch indeed!! We will be back!

Great neighborhood hangout

By Ryan T |

If you are visiting Houston and want to see what a typical night of inner-city life is like, this is your place. Great place to eat, drink, and people watch. All the food is freshly prepared and awesome.

our spot in the Heights

By clf27 |

My daughter lives in the Heights. We just spent 4 days visiting and came here twice for breakfast. You order at the bar and they bring it outside to you. We really enjoyed the lox and bagel, fruit salad, eggs, coffee, and ice tea. My daughter loves the breakfast tacos. Ingredients are all really fresh. Ice tea and I think coffee is refillable. They have a dog-friendly patio so she was able to bring our grand-dog.

Steak Night!

By Desiré Davis |

Great Value across the board. I love that it located in The Heights. I there is a parking lot but it gets full quick because a lot of people come out for steak nights. The steak nights are on Mondays and Wednesdays. Mondays are the most chill and Wednesdays are busier. I love the old school funk music that they play. Perfect for dates or group gathering with friends. I've never eaten off the menu because I only go for steak night. Once upon a time, they used to have waitresses but most things are self-service. Order from the bar for the restaurant food and drinks and order from the steak people under the tent for steak. The steak people are a separate entity from the actual restaurant so don't order your steak at the bar!

After Work Beer Spot_DvB

By Kaiser_D |

This is a great bar in a popular area. I have been twice for Wednesday night steaks. A small business sets up in the parking lot and collects orders from around the table. Both times the steaks were perfectly prepared and served with a baked potato. The cool thing about this symbiotic flow is that the bartenders focus on drinks. My experiences with the bartenders have been positive. They are friendly and efficient, and people are served quickly. The interior is somewhat narrow for my liking, but the outdoor seating is plentiful and decently spaced. Parking is available on the street, but the parking lot usually doesn’t seem to fill completely until around 8pm. The draft beer selection is comparatively extensive and there are several that I have not seen at most local bars. Overall, the atmosphere is moderately noisy and this bar provides a cool place to relax after work.

Great place, meh food.

My favorite place in Houston

By Rob R |

I never miss Onion Creek when I am in Houston. It is in the Heights district and if I were to live in a Houston this is where I would want to be. Onion Creek has great food, an excellent beer selection and the music is great. Not live but they play great stuff. You order at the counter so it is not full service but who cares when they make burgers like they do. My favorite is the Lampasas burger.

Good atmosphere with good food

Good food with good atmosphere. Friendly people. Nice little place to stop at for a quick fix.

Coffee House?

By trevytoe |

I googled the best coffee shops in houston and Onion Creek came up many times so I decided to check it out. I would 100% say that it is not a coffee house. It is more like a drinking cafe. They have a small selection of your typical coffee house beverages, but they have plenty of other alcoholic options. The food is low-priced and from my two experiences very good, although I don't come here as a food destination. The reason I keep coming back is the atmosphere. It has an Austin feel with great music and a unique look.

Great Place to Hangout

By mjsheridan130 |

This place was a great and laid back place to have some apps and drinks with friends. It was really enjoyable sitting outside on the beautiful patio area as it was just a great environment. I liked all the different types of beers they offered, and the staff was really knowledgeable about each type. I would definitely come back here next time I was in Houston.

Best steak! Great local hangout!

By West_U_2005_2007 |

If you are looking for elegant romantic dining this is not the place. Packed, most of it outdoor seating, waiters take steak orders, the rest you order yourself at the bar, even the soda refills you have to take care of yourself. The steak is divine (Mondays and Wednesdays $15 with baked potato)!!! Burger, salad, nachos, everything was excellent, service was fast, atmosphere was vibrant, happy, crazy, great place!!!

Fun atmosphere

By Brenda K |

My son moved to the Heights recently so we've walked to Onion Creek a couple of times. We've always felt safe in the area. The restaurant decor is fun and inviting. They have great drinks & beer choices. I have liked the food every visit & it's always fresh & plated nicely. Order at the bar & they'll bring it to you. They offer indoor & outdoor seating areas.

What a lovely place! Visited for the first time yesterday, but hope to be back soon. The outdoor patio is great for enjoying the delicious food. Would highly recommend for a relaxed dinner or just for sharing drinks with friends.

Not for me, too trendy. The parking lot is always full, nobody goes there anymore ;)

Brunch gone wrong

By Julie C |

A group of 6 of us came to Onion Creek after the Rhythm and Blues half marathon at 11 am on Sunday February 14. We, along with most other patrons, waited 1.25 hours for our food to come. In fact, we had to flag down the waiters and examine each group of plates they were holding to pull our own dishes off or they would not have been delivered. They have no separate line for drinks, so even though we were waiting for well over an hour for our food, we couldn't get more drinks without waiting in a 30 minute line. Food was incorrect, cold and underwhelming. We witnessed several people leave who were denied refunds for food they didn't receive.

Exactly what you want in a local eatery

By GBCrew |

I just had lunch at one of my favorite eating spots, I do have several, different eating spots for different moods. Yesterday was perfect; 75 degrees outside with a bright sun, the perfect setting for a cold beer and the best hot sandwiches you will ever put your mouth around. The outdoor patio is surrounded by trees and the air is filled with great music. They have a large array of beers on tap, many from local breweries and of course the best of the established beers. I had the turkey sandwich on ciabatta bread, my favorite sandwich in the world, but they also serve a wide assortment of awesome freshly prepared food including burgers, hotdogs, and a really unconventional pizza. They are also open for breakfast and dinner. if you haven't been here, do yourself a favor and give them a try, you can thank me later. Their website is http://www.onioncreekcafe.com/home.html click on the menu button in the middle of the page to see all their selections. I know I sound like an ad but I am real and they are great.

It's OK, Paying for the Atmosphere!!!

By Sandra B |

This place is ok. Kind of a neighborhood hangout. They are a little pricey. But I guess you are paying for the atmosphere. Good bar food. Lots of seats inside and out. Nice place for the night scene. Lots of TVs indoors and out. Been there once to check it out, probably won't be back.

`one of the older good spots around

By Pimmetje_7 |

Good place for a drink and a bite in the evening. Nice outdoor area as well. My friends frequent this place for their Sunday morning lunch after squash Good music choice when I was there

Not Cheap

By Shortknocer |

I liked the place but I was disappointed there were no lunch specials. Bottom line is- it was too pricey for my taste. Should not have to spend $30 for lunch.

They precook the hamburgers. It's sign of...

By danmark77008 |

They precook the hamburgers. It's sign of a lazy cook and owners not taking the time to actually eat there. If so the owner probably got a freshly cooked patty. I'll try again later but if the same, see ya. Same thing at Dry Creek.

First Time having Chicken and Waffles

By Phill N |

On our last day in Houston, my partner and I decided to walk over to Onion Creek for brunch. We had been to the restaurant in the evening but this would be the first time for an early meal. There was live music being played and the place was very crowded. We had taken a seat outside but it started to take some time before anyone came near our table. So, my partner went in to place our table order. I had the Chicken & Waffles and he had the Detox Salad. We both enjoyed the food, and the music and just sitting back and having a slow, lazy meal. My one complaint was not having full table service on the patio.

POORLY MARKED PARKING BEWARE

By Marlene S |

Watch out folks for this parking scam. Signage sucks and the phone numbers on the signs are no good. It cost me $220 to get my car out of the tow yard off of Jensen Drive. My daughter and I went next door to eat Pho. although we contiplated Onion Creek. The tow truck driver told me that the reason the owner was having people towed was because customers could not find a place to park and they were losing business over it. I've lived here longer that the ONION group has been around and not being able to park is not why they are losing business. When a place is hopping people find a place to park around here. They lost my business for life. Good luck with these kind of policies in this neighborhood because word spreads fast.

Great patio and great brunch

By TRAVELINGIRL_11 |

Went for brunch on Sunday morning. Great vibe and easy ordering before you sit down. Birds were chirping and there is a lot of lush trees and vegetation on the patio. Huge patio with long benches for bigger groups if needed. The food was great. I had the brisket hash bowl with eggs and an iced coffee. Really pleased. They also had a ton of non dairy milks for coffee! You can get fun alcoholic drinks like frozen mimosas! Great place for everyone - there were groups, couples, and families. Seems to be a hit!

Brunch!

By Carla A |

Found this gem with a friend of mine. I was so surprised that the food was so good. I had chicken and waffles and the chicken was fried to perfection. It was topped with blueberries and strawberries. They also have pitchers of mimosas available. Also, while visiting the owner (big guy w/ a beard) came by our table to make sure everything was correct. I like good customer service. I also have twins. The patio area is big enough for your stroller and they also have high chairs for the car seats. This place is perfect for brunch and I'll definitely be visiting again.

Best spot in this section of the Heights

Stopped for drinks and dinner at Onion Creek--hot dogs and bacon popcorn are the best!!Great bar and bar staff. This place is full of memorabilia of old music. Cool and trendy with a huge outdoor seating area and live music.

We were invited here to meet friends. We did not expect much but were very pleased with the food. We would return and recommend. Parking can be a challenge here.

awesome food

went fro brunch, simple unpretentious food. the breakfast bowls and brisket are a MUSt as well as the biscuits and gravy and drinks - great coffee and superb bloody mary.

Seems to be going downhill

By WhitHouston |

We used to go here often because we like our beer just as much as we like our dog, so this was a nice place where we could take our mutt and have a nice cold one in the patio... and it's still an OK place don't get me wrong... but I get the feeling they stopped trying and now the place has dirty tables all the time, that you basically have to clean up yourself... we also stopped eating here.. So there's that, if all you want is a cold beer in a patio while in the Heights this makes the cut.

Decent

By naturalme88 |

This was a good burger place. Was confused upon entering, you immediately see a bar on your right and then open seating. After standing around without being greeted, I asked the bar person if we were going to be seated - was informed to grab a menu, seat yourself and then return to the bar to place an order. I thought this was a lot to ask of your customer and definitely knocked down the customer service aspect of a dining experience but I did as I was told. Ended up choosing burgers - I got the big nasty. Got the mac and cheese with fruit for the kiddo. Paid as soon as I ordered and then given table number. Food was served shortly afterwards. The burger was really good, served with a lot of fries they were kind of hard and cool. I loved the kiddie mac and cheese it was super cheesy and tasted like white cheddar, a large bowl. The fruit was ok, the pineapple didn't look the freshest- had grapes and cantaloupe too. The place was really laid back. Nice patio seating with shade. Couch area, TVs with sport channels.

Good food, interesting place!

By Quiltlady0000 |

Fun place to relax and hang out. There are lots of outdoor tables under covers and trees. We like to sit outside because my two year old grand daughter can roam around a little and watch the cars go by. The food is good. An average meal is ten dollars. There are lots of variations on drinks due to the different flavorings available. They have different specials througout the week. There is even a place for dogs and dog owners to hang out.

Excellent Lunch!

My husband and I went for lunch at this place and it was delicious. They have a great beer selection and spacious outdoor seating. I would definitely go back when in Houston!

Great atmosphere

By DocT |

Sat outside. Walk up to the bar and order and take a seat outside. Chicken and waffle was good but the waffle was served cold. Excellent hot coffee. Guest ordered Eddy love fried chicken and fried egg. Biscuits and gravy was tasty with fluffy biscuits and creamy gravy. Italian goat cheese pizza had pesto and flavorful sausage with a fresh dough. BLT was fresh and delicious. Mimosa was chilled and bubbly.

The Best Coffee House in the Heights

By HungryDave1 |

A little of "weird" Austin right here in Houston. Bring your book, or a laptop and order a latte. The menu is also good. The parking situation is a little tricky. Be preparted to walk a block or two. And be sure to read the signs or you will get towed.
