Order the #7

By Sbacon1986 |

This is always a must when in LA. The sushi is always fresh, and the other menu items are amazing. I've had the rainbow roll, spicy tuna roll, Udon noodles, and the Pork Cutlet combo. Everything was delicious. Never had a problem at this restraunt. Also great shopping and culture experiences nearby.

So delicious

By Brendan521 |

I have friends from the LA area who constantly brag about the sushi and I can definitely understand why. I ordered a chirashi bowl (to get the most sashimi out of my meal) and 6 salmon rolls. The salmon sashimi was by far the best amidst very tough competition. I also sampled some food from the other dishes my friends ordered and nothing was noticeably bad, however I would recommend staying away from the more extravagant Americanized rolls like the spider roll or even California or spicy tuna; save those for a generic pan-Asian cuisine takeout restaurants.

going downhill

By KUNOUS |

I came to oomasa once in a while... the quality, both food and service, is on a downward trend... the chirashi I had is not in a top-notch, and the servers were not very attentive..

Good quality food with a friendly sushi chef

By funkwok |

My hubby and I came here as we were staying in the nearby Miyako hotel. We came into the restaurant at around 10pm, and boy, was it packed. We took a number and waited for ard 20mins for our table. We ordered a california handroll, a spider roll, a tempura+teriyaki chicken bento, and a tonkatsu with rice. The sushi chef was very friendly and immediately gave us hot disposable towels to freshen up. Very good service! The food was very fresh. Tonkatsu was very well done, and was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The california handroll was done in front of us and very fresh. The green tea ice cream served with the bento set was very good too. The chef was very attentive and told the waiter to refill our ocha when we have finished it. He also told the waiter to bring 2 spoons as he knew that we will only have one ice cream from the bento set and thus will be sharing the ice cream. The chef was also accomodating and even though the last order had closed for the night, when another 2 customers who were seated beside us requested for more sushi, he accomodated them and made the sushi per their request. I will definitely be back here when I visit LA again.

Good sushi with abysmal service

By AlfredoLP |

On a Saturday PM stroll I had a craving for sushi. Oomasa looked good, and had a few people waiting (4 or 5). As there were a few empty tables, I figured out the wait would be very short -- it turned out to be more than 10 minutes, as the people in the queue were plainly ignored by the waiters. I was alone, hence sitting at the bar (less than 50% occupied) would have been perfectly fine (I ended up sitting there anyways). An attempt at making the point to a passing waiter was met with a shrug. Finally I got to seat, and even ordering proved a challenge. Nobody seemed to care. When I finally managed to order, the food came in at random, trickling intervals. It's a shame because the sushi was actually very good, and in a restaurant with a sense of what organization and customer service means it would have been a very good experience. As it stands, I will never go back.

Good lunch with fresh sushi

By Ed E |

Stopped here for lunch and it was kind of crowded. Service was ok but they were busy. Food was great. Will come again.

Great dinner

By Barbara C |

We went to Oomasa for dinner and were pleasantly surprised. They offer nice combinations in their "dinner specials" such as a mix of sashimi, chicken teriyaki and sushi, so you can get to try various things. It all was quite tasty. The portions are rather large.

Small tables and good sushi

By Desert__Duo03 |

Oomasa is small restaurant but the sushi is very good. We really liked the Spider roll and the unagi. The location is easy to find with GPS and parking is not far away.

Great Japanese food

By 808Snow |

We go to Oomasa overtime we visit the LA area. Great friendly service and great food. Very busy at times, but its worth the wait. Make sure you park in the right parking lot to get validation.

Smelled so badly we walked out!

By Shopheet |

This awful fishy odor hit us in the face the moment we opened the door but we allowed the host to seat us anyway and we ordered soft drinks. Before they could even get the tray of glasses and cans to our booth we stood up and apologized to the server that we weren't staying. Why on earth anyone would eat here is beyond me. There's no way the fish is fresh, the smell was horribly pungent. The fact that this place is ranked so high among all the restaurants in LA is atrocious. This is the first review I've ever written. And because I often refer to trip advisor for recommendations, I feel obligated to tell others to stay far away from Oomasa!

A real decent Japanese meal

By 165Doc |

This is a solid Japanese restaurant only slightly Americanized. Of course it is necessary to cater to the less advantageous palates. The ingredients were fresh and the portions are reasonably big. Service was swift and friendly and the price points were very affordable. It is good for family and business meets. A place for a decent and nutritious meal for all.

Best in Little Tokyo

By spencerusa |

Crowded, noisy, a gold mine for whoever owns this stand-out restaurant with 25 plus seats at the sushi bar where two experts prepare the best sushi and sashimi in the area. Reservations not accepted so you may have to wait, especially if you are party of four or six as the number of booths is limited. Easier to get a table if you are a couple or a place at the bar if on your own. Well-managed "take a number" system ensures you will be treated fairly. Good tempura and combo selections but best to go for the sushi and sashimi, very reasonably priced for the quality delivered.

Good food great location

By hearthis09 |

The food was very good. Soda is by the can. Place was packed when I went. It is right next to all the little shops in jtown and across the street is the Japanese American national museum

Was good place

By NlsnS |

I returned to this restaurant after one year and was surprised how it decay, as well all the japanese village (many open places for rent). This time I ordered a combination lunch of pork cutlet and shashimi. The pork was very hard, the fish didn't seem so fresh, the pickles smelled bad. It was a wednesday lunch, a busy weekday, so the food should be fresh. I think next time I will try another place.

Wonderful fresh fish

By Travel Guy |

Wonderful very fresh fish & sushi. Lots of choices, service very nice, staff very friendly. You may have to wait for service but it is worth it....2 of us had dinner & I wish I could remember what we had exactly, 1 combo & 1 sushi plate. Very good.

Good Lunch

By lynndds |

We had a group of eleven & called ahead for a reservation. Four of the group had eaten here before & recommended it. A nice thing the server did was allow us to have separate checks. The food was fresh and everything tasted great.

Good food and good price

By miquelg75 |

Sometimes I felt as I was in Japan. Very good price/quality ratio! Had to wait a lot to be served, but I guess that is the price that has to be paid for a good restaurant

Fantastic sushi and sushi chefs

By Mspeppers |

My husband and I dined at Oomasa in Little Tokyo on a Friday night. We were fortunate to be seated at the sushi bar immediately without having to wait. It does get crowded and the wait can be long. I am not sure if they take reservations. The sushi chefs are experienced and fun. Our favorites were the nabeyaki udon, salmon skin rolls, and beef teriyaki/mixed tempura combination. With two glasses of wine, dinner for two was about $75 for the two of us before tip. The service is friendly and quick. This is an authentic sushi bar, not like many of the fusion type of sushi bars in Los Angeles. We will be back soon.

AVOID - bad food

By Austin H |

Food here is nasty. Sushi is not fresh - the octopus nigiri was particularly crunchy and disgusting. Karaage was oily and not crunchy.

Never eaten that good Japanese outside of Japan

By Caro |

If you like authentic Japanese food, i don't think you'll get disappointed here. Friendly staff, good sake, real Japanese sushi chefs and a cosy atmosphere. Try to get a place at the bar.

Great food, great service in Little Tokyo's Japanese Village.

By dod2015 |

One of the best restaurants in Little Tokyo. Traditional style, friendly service, great food. Probably the most spacious restaurant in the Japanese Village. There's a wait at peak times and weekends, but the line is always fast moving. Guests can also sit around the large sushi bar. Sashimi, sushi and rolls are fresh and flavorful. I'd recommend the monkfish liver dish. Tastes like foie gras. Excellent!

Yup! Yum.

Great service, great sushi

By Leonid G |

We were the frequent visitors to this good restaurant. It has a family style, well organized inside. Once I lost my credit card here and when I was back in several days, the card was waiting for me, NP. :) Food is always fresh and prepared with love and master skills.

Great lunch specials

By mcloum |

Stopped to have lunch here after exploring Little Tokyo and had their chicken teriyaki lunch special. It was delicious and it was a lot of food. Everything was great including the staff. I would definitely come back here again the next time I am in Little Tokyo.

Excellent Little Tokyo Restaurant

By jhollingsworth11 |

The Oomasa Restaurant was every bit as good as advertised, the ambiance was great and the service and quality of food was excellent, there were 4 of us and we all ordered different dishes and the were all very good. The waitstaff was attentive and the service was excellent, combined with reasonable prices made for an excellent dining experience. Highy recommend taking the time and making an effort to dine in this great restaurant

Very good sushi in Little Tokyo

By Janet F |

The "take-a-number" cards by the door tell the story of the popularity of this relatively small restaurant. We arrived not long after it opened for dinner on a week night and within minutes every table was occupied. Its location on the edge of the Japanese Village Plaza makes for a pleasant evening out with a walk among the Japanese shops before or, in our case, after dinner. The atmosphere of the restaurant is decidedly not typically North American; the booths are comfortable and the sushi bar looks inviting. The service is no nonsense but respectful: when asked about a possible substitution to accomodate a vegetarian diet, the waiter simply said "No" and went on with his work. Since others have mentioned this about the service, I wonder whether there is a cultural element at play here of which we North Americans are ignorant. My husband and I ordered miso soup, seaweed salad, and sushi, all of which were excellent. The waiter surprised us by asking whether we wanted wasabi in our sushi - I guess this is due to the proliferation of all-you-can-eat sushi places where wasabi is left out of all sushi - we like the traditional style in which the chef seasons the sushi as he/she sees fit. Ratio of rice to fish in the nigiri was lower than we're used to, but less rice is ok with us. Others in our party rated the tempura vegetables, the vegetarian sushi roll, and one of the dinner sets very good. There's no dessert menu to speak of so we walked to one of the ice cream shops in the plaza. We would go back to this restaurant if we're in LA again.

Fresh maki rolls

By Francia S |

I ordered all maki rolls from Oomasa and had them "to go" so I can only comment on the quality and taste of the food. And the speedy service of their take-out orders! Although I did not have the time to dine inside the restaurant itself, I know you would not be disappointed in eating at this very popular sushi spot! It was crowded when I came to pick up my food. The next time I return to LA, I fully intend to re-visit and enjoy more off the menu here.

Very good food

By Olympia B |

Had one of the sushi combos (can't remember which one). The fish used on the sushi and the sashimi was really fresh and tasty. The tempura was perhaps a bit oilier than what I was used to, but still quite tasty. Would definitely recommend for a quick and delicious lunch.

Nice Japanese Restaurant

By KanMacau |

Three of the family members went to this restaurant on a Friday night. We were there at 6 pm. but it was already full of people and we had to wait for around 20 minutes before seated. The sashimi was fresh and sushi was tasty. They also served dinner special that we saved time to make the selection. When talking with the staff, we were told that the restaurant has been opened for over 40 years and names of their staff along the years were marked in small wooden boards and hung over the wall. Nice place in Little Tokyo area and worth to have a bite.

Great Food

By mrsjackson95 |

The food is great, anything you order you won't be disappointed. The price is reasonable and worth it.

A solid Japanese Restaurant

By 165Doc |

Simply put; good quality food, high standard, good services and most of all, tasted great. Price point is reasonable and portion is generous. A great place for family and friends.

Great spot!

By missk808 |

Atmosphere Located in the LA's Little Tokyo district. There are booths and a sushi bar. Seating is comfortably spaced. The restaurant is not very large and most of the tables were taken during the Friday lunch hour. Service A few different servers stopped by our table to check on us. It took a little longer than we expected to get our food but not unreasonably so for the crowd. Food Delicious and filling. Good quality and tasty. We had sashimi (raw fish), sushi, and their combos. Overall Nice atmosphere and good food. I would stop here if we were in the area again but would allow ample time due to the crowd. Notes: I think the chicken teriyaki uses chicken thighs not chicken breasts (no problem for me since I think they're tastier, softer and juicer). Also, most people avoid sashimi samplers because of the price but someone in our party ordered it as part of their lunch combo and the quality seemed comparable to our sampler which is a great deal. The pic is of combo #5 (I think) chicken teriyaki, tempura and sushi, *I think it was a nice touch that a couple pieces of nigiri (type of sushi-slices of fish/seafood placed on a ball of rice which are meant to be bite sized) were included most places just use California roll.

Excellent place with really Japanese style service

By Andrei N |

Went there for happy hour drinks. Very good prices. Really Japanese style service: we ordered small dishes and drinks several times. Really good draft beer, excellent sashimi samplers that are made to your taste. No need to make a "formal" order, ask for what you want when you want. Feels like in Japan indeed.

One of many great Japanese places in Little Tokyo.

By EAZELIFF |

I love the wide assortment of restaurants here in Little Tokyo. I was going to a concert at Disney Hall, walkable from Little Tokyo and did not want an elaborate dinner. One of their combo plates, which I would call a bento box, suited me just fine. Service was good and the chefs thanked me on the way out!

Great Sushi

By Laura L |

I love the chefs there and the sushi is great. I see people ordering all sorts of unique items, but when I asked for something interesting, they gave me a shrimp roll - um - that's boring. Anyway, knife skills old fashion Japanese chefs, just know what you want. Fish is REALLY fresh...

Didn't do sushi, results so-so

By Edward L |

my wife's beef teriyaki was good, the accompanying tempura Vegies were soggy. My chicken teriyaki was generously portioned and OK. Will search for other places when near Little Tokyo in the future.

Friendly service and tasty food

By Wilmena choundry |

We found this place through TripAdvisor and it didn't fail to disappoint the octopus was delicious, salmon was fresh and service was prompt and friendly would visit here more often if I could

Great dinner combos!

By jays165 |

When I'm in LA and in the mood for sushi, I really like this place. They may not have the absolute highest quality sushi, but it is pretty good, and I really like their dinner specials. In particular, I go for the sashimi/sushi/chicken teryaki/salad combo, or sometimes the same combo but with tempura in place of sashimi. It's a lot of food (it comes with miso soup and green tea ice cream too; there's also a very random macaroni salad that doesn't really fit in at a Japanese restaurant), but the variety is great, quality is generally good, and I enjoy it.

Good but I expected more

By Frank E |

Life is all about expectation so I expected a lot from a sushi bar in Little Tokyo. The place was packed and there was a line to get tables. Luckily we found a spot at the bar. To make a long story short, the sushi was good, but it wasn't special. It wasn't much different from the sushi you can get at an average Bay Area sushi bar. And the price wasn't any better either. It was actually quite expensive for what we got. I would say if you happen to be in the neighborhood, this is a fine place to dine. But I wouldn't make a detour to get there.

Great Food -- Great Service

By Narukami47 |

There are many good sushi-ya to found in the LA area, be it Downtown, the Westside or the Valley, however... For my time and money, Oomasa is the best. We have been dining at this restaurant for over 20 years now and have enjoyed every visit. The tuna sashimi will melt in your mouth, while the veggie tempura is light and tasty. Lunch or dinner, the meals are excellent and very reasonably priced. A word of warning: Oomasa is popular and you may find yourself waiting for a table -- it is worth the wait. There is usually ample parking in the plaza parking lot, but you can also avoid the hassle by taking the Red Line to Downtown. And after your meal... Take some time to explore the area. There are lots of great shops including one devoted to Godzilla and his fellow kaiju. Make a day of it, and enjoy the sushi.

Authentic Japanese food and great bento boxes.

By David B |

Whenever I'm in Little Tokyo I stop in at Omasa. Its usually crowded and you have to take a number but its worth the wait. I get the bento boxes that are stuffed with a variety of things. The staff is always helpful also.

Great Japanese food

By Pam_Olsen |

Stopped by for lunch with 2 friends and we loved it. The quality of the food was very good . It was quite crowded, but I guess that's normal for lunch. Recommended!

No nonsense good Japanese restaurant.

By AllanChg |

I was surprised to find good quality Japanese food at such a reasonable price in LA, even though this is in Little Tokyo. The sushi and sashimi are good and the serving size is huge.

Plenty to eat even if you don't like sushi

By edwardsmom24 |

I had the tonkatsu and it was large piece, crispy and yet not greasy, delicious. My friend ordered sushi a la carte and I have to say, the Spanish mackerel nigiri was so beautiful it should have been a poem. I can't eat seafood so sometimes when I go out with friends who want sushi I wind up eating bowls of edamame but there's plenty to choose from that doesn't involve fish. If it's crowded go ahead and ask to sit at the sushi bar, you can order off the whole menu at the bar, not just sushi.

Good

By Jeffrey H |

Highly recommend! Very high quality food and can be very busy in weekends! Weekdays are easy to get a table!

Awesome Fresh Sashimi!!!

By FlavioC |

Very tasteful fresh sashimi!!! It is worth the visit! Great sushimen team! The fish is so fresh... Have a sit on the sushibar, so you can see the food being prepared by them..

Oooo masa goood

By German F |

We ate at Oomasa Sushi on our visit to Little Tokyo. Nice cozy japanese restaurant with friendly staff. We were fortunate to get a table after only waiting 15 minutes but got crowded rather quickly. The sushi was fresh and quite good. Ramen noodles portions were plentiful and katsu don was tasty. Can't go wrong if you decide to come here.

Favorite sushi place

By themaddgolfer |

It's been several years since I've been here so I had to make a visit on this trip. I used to eat here several times a year while my daughter was attending college but since she graduated I haven't had the opportunity (or need) to come to L.A. so haven't been here in over 3 years. Gotta say tho that it was like "coming home" to visit a friend. Pretty much the same staff in front of and behind the counter. Had all my favorites; toro, hamachi, ika, mussels, anago, aji, salmon, sake and sake haha. It was late on a Monday so about 3/4 full but service was fast and friendly. We normally sit on the counter coz I like to watch the sushi being made while chatting with the chef. All in all another great dinner.

Can't wait to eat here again!

By Karen M |

We stopped at Oomasa for lunch while walking around Little Tokyo. It was the best meal we had on vacation! We each ordered a different bento. Mine was sashimi. It was so delicious! The presentation was also beautiful. My husband had the steak bento and it was also extremely tasty. The staff was very nice and polite. The restaurant was clean and the ambiance was great. We had a wonderful meal and time.

Wonderful Kobe Steak

By JMKFT4 |

This is a quaint traditional style Japanese restaurant with a sushi bar that is great to sit at and watch your sushimi and sushi being made. We had the above as well as Kobe Steak, a chicken dish and the Japanese pancake which was all really top food. Highly recommend.

Dinner before theater

We went here and enjoyed their dinner specials. They do have a license as well. Food was good but rather expensive for what we had.

Great Japanese cuisine and plenty of it!

By jaimed337 |

Craving Japanese food but can't decide between sushi, tempura, or teriyaki? Order a combination plate at Oomasa and have them all. The food in this humble Little Tokyo restaurant is delicious and plentiful, and the prices are reasonable. The little bit of macaroni salad included could be omitted but its a minor misstep.

Superior sushi

By Gary L |

This is an excellent example of a traditional JAPANESE sushi bar! Phenomenal toro and everything else is top notch! If you're looking for Korean rolls and miscellaneous junk this is not for you. Always a wait to get in but worth the effort.

Sushi Restaurant

By Soykan_Guler |

This is famous restaurant in Little Tokyo in L.A. Good foods and local beer of course Japan beer. If you want to go dinner. Maybe you should wait for sit because of some people wait line. I suggest you can go after 8.30pm. Thank you.

Truly authentic sushi...

By Paul L |

The short of it: Oomasa is an amazing, authentic, fresh, delicious, and reasonably priced sushi restaurant that I recommend to those who want a real Japanese sushi ya. OK, the long of it: I am very interested in sushi. I have been eating sushi from 18 years old to my 51 years today, I lived in Tokyo for 4.5 years, visited the inner Tsukiji Market about 7 times with visitors, I even did my NYU masters degree multimedia "thesis" project with a CD ROM on sushi and sushi making. So I have enjoyed sushi hundreds of times. Lately, I've been missing an authentic sushi experience in the US. There are good places, even ones I like a lot in my current hometown of Portland (Bamboo, Shigezo), but I miss speaking Japanese to the chef and saying "omakase", which means "you choose". So my friend and I just did "omakase" at Oomasa, and brother and sister, it was fantastic! Home made Oshinko to start, then the sushi - Hirame, Tai, Bluefin akami, Ootoro, Ama Ebi, Uni, Unagi temaki, Ume/Shiso/Kuri temaki. And did we want the Ama Ebi heads in miso soup or tempura fried? And the Tai had some Yuzu/Sankooshoo blob on top, and other tane (toppings) had a sauce on them already (so don't pollute with soy sauce). This is soooo authentic yet creative. The size was awesome - not too big, but not tiny. The funniest part - we were intending to go to the sushi roundabout restaurant in Little Tokyo about 10 stores away, but it was a 40 min wait - instead, for $55 before tip each, including 1 big beer, we got a sushi experience straight from Edo (old name of Tokyo).

First-class Japanese Food in Modest Surroundings

By Ken H |

The Japanese Village Plaza Mall in L.A.'s Little Tokyo teeters between exotic and kitsch, but it makes an amusing diversion every so often. I have always found the Japanese food served at Oomasa to be of high quality. Sushi, sashimi, tempura--the fare I enjoy at a Japanese restaurant--are all done well here. The sashimi is delicate and easily melts on the tongue. I have had more deftly made tempura, but what is served here is better than average. I have always found the service to be attentive, even when the restaurant is busy. This is a popular place among both Asian and Anglo patrons.

The Best

By John L |

My girlfriend and I have been going here every Saturday evening for years. We love the food, and the staff is the best. Yoshi, the manager, is a treat. The restaurant is small, so you have to come a little early on the weekend if you don't want to wait for a table. There are usually a few seats open at the sushi bar. If you have to wait for a table, don't forget to take a number from the peg just inside the door. While you wait you can cruise the plaza, There is live entertainment and many small boutiques. Close by are a couple of bakeries. One features fresh imagawa that you can watch being made through the front window; the other has a variety of breakfast pastries from which to choose. There is also a small Japanese grocery store with many items you will never find in an American store. It's just a wonderful place. After your meal, don't forget to exchange bows and thank yous on the way out--it's an enjoyable part of the ritual. Oomasa validates your parking for the lot that you enter from west side of Central between First and Second, so your parking is free if you don't stay more than two hours.

The good thing is that there's something for everyone. The bad thing is that it's mostly mediocre.

Good to very good

By FamilyMan1963 |

The thing about Japanese food is that more often than not, the experience is more about fresh ingredients than about sophisticated seasoning. The shrimp tempura was excellent. The batter was exactly as you would expect it to be at the finest restaurant or the smallest hole-in-the-wall anywhere in Japan. The ahi on Rice bowl was beautifully presented with shredded seaweed, rice, and ginger. The ahi had a beautiful color...it was delicious. My bento box had some strange American items in it. I asked the waitress what one thing was and she said elbow macaroni with mayonnaise and a little bit of potatoes. Not very Japanese. The salmon was perfectly cooked and tender. The teriyaki beef was unremarkable, unseasoned. The soup was fantastic. An extraordinary broth. Add one soft drink and one large sake, and lunch was $73. Everything was fine or good to really good. Not something I think I would ever do again. The service was actually very attentive. Things come out not in the order desired but in the order they get prepared in the kitchen. So some people got their main dish before others got their appetizers. The restaurant tries its best to move very quickly as the line can be long. Would I go again? Yes. Am I dying to go? No. I'd be too curious about all the other options in the area.

Excellent Sushi worth waiting for!

The restaurant is always full so you may have to wait in order to get a table but it is well worth the wait. Whenever I travel to LA, Oomasa is one of my stops. Sushi is excellent!

Best quality!

By Elsie R |

My friend and I first came here in July this year when we were craving some Japanese. The bento box lunch special was the best cure to this craving! Delicious, fresh great quality japanese food. We even went back again in the same week! Today we arrived back in LA after a long flight, our first port of call was Oomasa. I tried the Neboyaki Udon, best I've ever had! Always friendly and fast service as well! Will be back again this week.

Best Food and Service

The real deal!

By walkabout56 |

Truly authentic restaurant in an historic section of town, the perfect accompaniment to a trip to Little Tokyo. Walking into the restaurant felt like stepping back into Japan as the interior seating arrangement was reminiscent of what you'll find there. The sushi was nothing but the freshest on top of perfected sushi rice. The tempura was the way it should be and was every bit tasty. Their soba was every bit as good, too. For someone looking to sample the many offerings of Japanese cuisine this is the place to do it. Will be returning here again when the opportunity arises.

Good japanese restaurant by Japanese people

By Nari L |

Great sushi here. There was nothing that I had here that was bad. The service was good too and attentive. Came here on a weeknight and surprisingly it was pretty packed. I did have to wait about 15 min before a table opened up. All in all, I'll prob be back here for some good sushi again. They do have a punch card too for visitors! Make sure you get take one when you walk in at the front of the entrance.

Consistently good authentic Japanese food

By LnS2004 |

Whenever we go to Little Tokyo we often stop by at Oomasa for good sushi. Food quality and services have been consistently solid. The carved wood panels and lanterns with Oomasa in Kanji give Oomasa an air of authenticity. For lunch today we ordered sashimi lunch (3 pieces of salmon, yellowtail and tuna each), combinations including chicken teriyaki/tempura and shioyaki or grilled salted salmon. They came with tsukemono, hot miso soup and pickles. Brown rice was available for the health conscious. A satisfying experience. I loved the Nabeyaki noodle here but did not order it today. The waitress explained that the wood planks with inscribed characters (employee names since opening she said) missing from the wall are being redone to reflect changing times. Oomasa offered 2-hour validated parking which allowed us time to get imagawayaki from across the walkway for dessert.

An ok restaurant

By Jomama_Fosho |

Went to little tokyo just to shop for a panda pj went to this restaurant to try it out i ordered spicy salmon roll, spicy shrimp roll and spicy tempura roll. It was ok. .it's not something i will crave or go back for. each roll cost $5-$6. My daughter had beef teriyaki for $15 but the beef wasn't tender enough.

Outstanding Food & Service!!

By Chris (Trip Tips with Chris) |

I stumbled upon this place while I was filming the Japanese Village Plaza for a downtown walking tour video. I’m so glad I went inside to grab a bite to eat. The sushi is incredible. Pictured here is the Spicy Tuna Roll - hands down the best I’ve ever had! On top of that, the service is outstanding as well. Highly recommend going here whenever you’re in Little Tokyo - Los Angeles.

Enjoyed

Hadn’t been to Little Tokyo for a while. So, Sunday after church we went and had lunch at Oomasa Restaurant. Staff was very friendly and attentive. Restaurant has Japanese flair. I had the Oomasa Special Combination, Tempura, Sashimi, Sushi with miso soup, steamed rice, potato salad, green salad and orange slices. All the food was fresh and enjoyable. My wife had Chicken Teriyaki and Tempura with potato salad, green salad, miso soup, steamed rice, and orange slices. The chicken moist with just the amount of teriyaki sauce everything else was very enjoyable. When eating not only enjoy the many food places but walk around and experience everything else to see.

Busy, long wait, slow service, good food, nice decor.

By RDHOnTheGo |

Friends and I were staying nearby at the Miyako Hotel, so this was a very convenient choice. After walking through the open mall of Little Tokyo we returned to Oomasa as it had a large menu. It was very busy and the wait was long. Most diners were Japanese and many had children. It was bustling and noisy. When there's a wait patrons take a number and find a place near the busy and crowded entrance to stand until their number is called. The decor is very nice and feels authentically Japanese. When we finally got a booth and ordered from the large menu it took quite awhile for the food to arrive. The service was matter of fact and not attentive. However, the food was very good. I had meso soup, sushi, and prawns and vegetables tempura and all were tasty and well prepared. And, the prices were reasonable. I like the Miyako Hotel as it is handy to the Amtrak station, but next time I will try a different restaurant.

Great Sushi!

Great Sushi in Little Tokyo

By Vanessa Albergo |

Went last night to check out Little Tokyo and have some Sushi. So many places to pick from but the reviews sold us and it being packed sealed the deal . We waited 5 minutes for a table which isn’t bad. I had the chicken teriyaki combination which was such a good choice, lots of food including sushi and sashimi... everything you needed including miso soup and ice cream for dessert. The BF had the dragon roll and tuna roll and he was in heaven... really fought ordering another dragon roll. Definitely will be back next time I’m in town. Service was great too... everyone needs to go!

nice little spot in Little Tokyo

By sirsmokeyjoe |

I must of gotten lucky after reading the other reviews. I was able to get a seat at the bar right away. I started with a chriashi bowl. the chef delivered a beautiful assortment of fish in basically a bento box style tray, not to much rice, which was nice. Every bit of the sushi was excellent. I only had one other item, a handroll with Natto, it was the first time I had ever had it that way, and I must say i thought it was a cool way of serving it. I would go back for sure.

fantastic lunch

picked this place on the recommendations of reviews, and it didn't disappoint for Lunch. The bento is very good value and the service was quick and efficient. Very authentic food and decor. No waiting for us we must have got lucky. It is better than a score of 4, but not a 5.

Best "Traditional" Restaurant in Little Tokyo

By Liars N F |

The Oomasa is my favorite "traditional" Japanese restaurant in Little Tokyo. By this, I mean that it has the usual array of combination lunches, pure sushi by the piece, and the old stand-bys all made and served with great flavor and excellent grace and efficiency. This is a place where you can use your Japanese skills, although the last few times we have gone, there have been lots of Chinese speakers. Nice counter service where you do not have to get the sushi and order a la carte. Could be an option because this place fills up, making getting a table a challenge.

Worth the wait

By Megnolia07 |

This sushi place is right in the heart of Little Tokyo. There is no hostess stand, you take a number and wait. It was a very busy night when I ate there. There is a table option or sushi bar option. When there is open seating at the bar, they call out if anything is there to sit at the sushi bar. Otherwise you wait for your number to be called. The menu had many options. Very authentic food. The sushi was great. The dinner combo's were worth the price and quality. The staff was friendly and the food service was fast.

Crowded but worth the wait

By ccabacungan |

We meet our friends here on occasion - usually on a Friday or Saturday night. It does get crowded so expect a wait. We come here to get our fix of Japanese cuisine. I think their combinations are great. I normally order the tonakatsu/sashimi combination - the tonkatsu is crispy on the outside and moist and tender on the inside. Their sashimi is also pretty fresh. Included in their combinations are rice, salad, miso soup and ice cream. I guess I think their combinations are a pretty good value and food quality has always been very good.

Authentic Japanese Fare

By ohgeorge |

There are several earteries in Japanese Village Mall in Little Tokyo, but we consider this is the best for an authentic Japanese meal. It's not classic food you might find at an upcscale eatery in Japan. It's food you would expect to find in a native run restuarant serving both the general pubic and Japanese alike. There was a full sushi bar and table service with "mature" mama-sans as.servers. They had bento box dinners as will as meals you can assemble from the varied menu. Everything we had from tempura dishes to sushi were delicious. Prices were moderates, too!

Oomasa is a long-time institution in Little Tokyo, with a wide selection of standard Japanese dishes and fresh, delicious sushi of all varieties. Open til about midnight, the aesthetics are charming and the food is delicious. This restaurant is, hands down, one of my favorite places for toro and likely my top sushi restaurant in town (the secret must be in their sushi rice, which is always a perfect vinegary blend). If sushi's not your thing, you can take comfort in their tempura, udon noodles, zaru-soba, teriyaki, or various dinner sets.

Old school since 1972

We came here on Christmas day for lunch and the place was packed except for the sushi bar area, which we sat at and ordered from the menu instead of getting sushi. The food is very good and the service is fast what more can you ask for on Christmas day.

Yum yum yum, would visit again.

I came here when it was clear that nearby Daikokuya was probably the busiest place in Little Tokyo and it would be an age to wait there. And I'm delighted to say I loved this place! The staff were very friendly and the food was very tasty, plentiful and well priced. I had the $19 Sashimi, Sushi, Beef Teriyaki dinner plate, which came with three types of sashimi (i think it was tuna, yellowfin and salmon) and three types of sushi too, plus the usual accompaniments of steamed rice, miso soup, pickled salad etc. I also additionally had fish tempura (around $8). It was all extremely tasty and the green tea ice cream included with the dinner menu was a good way to finish. A large bottle (like 2 bottles in one) of Asahi at $8 was also good value from others places I'd been in America on my tour. The restaurant is well presented, staff were friendly and I'd happily eat here again.

We don't need no stinkin' customer service

By ChristineCND |

You know, the food was delicious. But I'll remember Oomasa for the astonishing behavior of the manager. My husband has a shellfish allergy. After looking over the menu and finding the few things he felt safe to eat, he tried to order the beef teriyaki and was told, "It's only available as part of a bento box tonight". We asked to speak to the manager. When he arrived, we said, we have a shellfish allergy situation, can we get an order of beef teriyaki without the bento box? "No," said the manager, who then turned his back on us and started collecting dishes from another table. End of conversation. No alternatives proposed, no effort to help. The most charitable explanation I can come up with is that he was so embarrassed at the situation that he could not continue to face us. More likely, he is not the kind of manager that should ever be allowed to interact with customers… or run a restaurant.

Great food for great value

Ate here earlier today. We were starving so we ordered a couple of dishes. The service was quick and the food was nice and fresh. I would recommend this place for sure

Great Sushi in Little Tokyo

Pretty good restaurant

By Steve H |

Their tempura is the best we had for a while. The dipping sauce is right on. Their miso soup is very good, much better than the noodle place that has the line outside!!! Their price is very reason compare with other surround restaurants.

SUSHI!!!!

Please don't miss out on this delicious sushi! As well as the stores around it. Lovely place to walk around and hear some karaoke. Have fun!

Great lunch

By MariaBCalifornia |

I had a sushi/sashimi/tempura lunch combination here and the fish was fresh and colorful. The tempura was great also. A cute little place that generally gets crowded for lunch (I went at noon on a Friday and didn't have to wait, but nearly all the tables were full). A great place to have lunch or dinner. The staff was very friendly as well. They offered validation/discount on parking in the area also.

Excellent choice of Japanese cuisine

By LorenzSingapore |

Lunch bento set are very affordable and so is the dinner set which is a couple of dollars extra. Food portion is generous, sashimi is very fresh with a thick cut. Terayaki and tempura are equally good too. Try avoid sitting at the side nearer to the street as it gets a little smoky. Overall, the food is as good as those you find in Tokyo but at a fraction of that price.

First time Californian sushi

By BrooklynRed1 |

I am a born and bred New Yorker, and you can't knock the East coast sushi too much, but West coast sushi is AMAZING. I came here for dinner my first night in LA (ever), and we kept it simple in the Little Tokyo area. The restaurant is nothing shmancy, everything is made of wood, there is table and booth seating, and bar seating. We sat at the bar and had the sushi chef himself take our orders. It was my first time having sushi in the non-traditional rice, seaweed, and stuff inside arrangement. I had nigiri here, the toro, salmon, eel, amber jack, etc. It was so fresh and rich and while it wasn't the fanciest, the quality was definitely the best of any sushi I'd had. It's not cheap either, 3 of us ate for about $120. The portions were well-sized, so I was perfectly full after. Overall, I'd say this place is a real winner, best for those looking to enjoy a quiet enough atmosphere to catch up with friends or family, along with their sushi. The sushi chef was funny and obliging and sweet, the decor was good, the ambience was good, the service was very good, the prices were good considering the quality, and the food was excellent.

Great place for lunch!

We decided to go to Oomasa because of the great reviews and our big party of 12. They were able to accommodate us within 10 min on a Friday during lunch times. Everyone there was attentive and helpful. The food was really good as well! I had the sashimi, tempura, sushi bento box. It came with a bowl if rice and miso soup. Also shared the rainbow roll with my brother. Everything was delicious!

All I can say is yummy!

By Gette413 |

Be patient, it is worth the wait. The food is delicious and we loved eating at the sushi bar. The cost was average for sushi but well worth it!

I felt as I were in Japan with all the Japanese diners which is highly unusual at sushi restaurants.

Real Japanese

I have been going there ever since I was student... I have never lived in LA but just about every visit to LA, I go back to that place...for more than 30 years and more than 100 times. It is real.

Good, solid neighborhood sushi place in Little Tokyo

By Steve R |

Get a seat at the bar and let the old masters take care of you. We love this place and hit it at least once every time we're in the LA area. It's not fancy, it has a workmanlike attitude and approach to some really good food, with decades of cumulative experience among the sushi chefs. Tasty, no-nonsense, dependable, quality sushi and sashimi. 'Nuff said.

Mmm good Japanese stuff =)

By Grappler9 |

I found this place by chance on NYE. We went to a nearby restaurant last year that was becoming a NYE tradition. Well they were closed so we walked around the Japanese Village and found this one. We didn't wait long to be seated either last or this year...on NYE lol. I ordered the Tempura chicken teriyaki and salad(pictured), it also comes with miso soup, rice and an ice cream dessert all for about $13. The food is very good and as you can see the portion/price ratio is great. The decor inside seems very authentic...my assumption because I have never been to Japan. There is a sushi bar and booths along the wall but also several long booths which are sometimes split by a condiment rail to accommodate separate parties of two, so pretty much if you sit there you will be sitting next to people on the same table. never bothered me, just FYI. Great place and food, I recommend.

We eat at oomasa almost every week

By Manniolala |

We finally found this restaurant that we frequented in little tokyo. the set lunch/dinner is defintely good deal. the restuarant has been there since late 1970s. we love the fresh seafood, tempura, eel jun, pickles (jo-shinko), etc. Whenever we crave for Japanese food and come to the little tokyo, oomasa has always been our first choice.

Fantastic sushi

Have been during the break at work. Sit at the bar. The sushika was extremely kind and made epic toro rolls. Every piece melting in your mouth. Fat belly salmon simply great. Traditional , sincere japanese place located in Little Tokyo
