Delicious Contemporary Greek Food in a Pleasant Setting

By TravlelingFlash |

There are a number of good Greek restaurants in Philadelphia, so we hadn't been to this one before. The decor is pleasant and non-intrusive, the service is good and also non-intrusive. The food is very good contemporary Greek, no moussaka in sight. Particularly good were the grilled octopus, which was soft and tasty and the special, which was butternut squash ravioli with a cheese sauce was fabulous. Other dishes were all interesting and tasty. Only downside is that they were out of Turkish coffee. But we'll be back so will have some next time.

Great After-Show Dinner

By mvyguy |

The grilled octopus is the best! The Greek tapas-style menu is unique and varied. From fish to vegetable to pasta to meat, all the choices are tempting. The bronzino was also superb. Nicely presented and excellently prepared food, along with reasonable prices, made for a thoroughly enjoyable experience. We will return.

Poor service

By Dan P |

I met my niece and nephew for drinks and food on a Wednesday night. It was not very crowded, maybe 50% of the seats at the bar and tables were taken. We ordered drinks and the fried calamari. As soon as we finished the calamari, we were told we had to get up and move to the bar if we wanted any more drinks. It was 9:30 at this point and even less crowded. The waitress was following the rules but we were comfortable and did not feel like sitting at the bar. I have been in these situations before and 90% of the time common sense prevails. The calamari was average and the portion was very small. I won't be going back.

Enjoyed both visits

By KokoLB |

Good food. Quality ingredients, intelligent cooking. We had dinner there twice and enjoyed both meals. The service was very good and our server had an extensive knowledge of the menu which is always a plus.

A mixed bag

By MS06 |

As other reviewers have stated, there are problems with portion sizes. The quality of the food was good but the lamb shank could have fed an army, whereas the chops were three of the tinest and thinnest that I have ever seen - would have been too small as an appetizer. The hazelnut chocolate icecream was excellent, and the server was very friendly and efficient.

Not pure Greek but very good

By DLFriedel |

I had tbe asparagus bisque and the mussels. Both were excellent and tasty dishes. Nothing truely Greek ontbe menu more of a Mediterranean fusion but worth checking out.

Excellent Food, Great atmosphere

Great food in an authentic Greek taverna

By Carol B |

After walking by this restaurant many times and never giving it much thought I finally decided to plan a visit. I am so glad I did! My boyfriend and I used the opportunity to dine there on Dining Out for Life and it was very crowded. We still had great attention from the waitstaff and didn't need to wait for our food. We loved everything! Each dish was prepared exquisitely and we were very impressed. We also had the opportunity to sample their brand new menu, which was introduced that night. We will certainly return! Don't miss the chance to go!

Like being back in Santorini...

By David S |

We went to Opa on a whim, since we love Greek food and it was close to our hotel. This was the best Greek food we've had since we were in Greece. The atmosphere is inviting and the staff was friendly and professional. We loved it so much we went back again the next night. We tried the Chef's four course Pikilia, thinking it would be a good way to sample a few of the items on the menu. We were wrong. It was a good way to sample a LOT of the items on the menu. And they were all amazing. We had to leave a few things sampled but not finished. There was just so much food. A little bit of this, a little bit of that. All so tasty. Almost like being back in Greece. Our waitress, Caitlyn, was exceptionally nice. Everything was wonderful. If you like Greek food, don't miss this one...

Where's the food?

By KATHLEEN A |

If you are hungry, this isn't the place for you. We ordered the Pikilia for an appetizer, which was a combination of appetizers -- hummus, olives, feta cheese (which was the size of a small marble), pita, etc. They did offer us more pita bread which was nice. I had the swordfish for dinner which was very tasty, but the portion was lean. The service was good, but we felt like they rushed us.

Surly chef soured an otherwise pleasant evening

By FellowTaveler2 |

The food generally was quite good and the atmosphere is upbeat. However, despite my having told the waiter that I'm allergic to onions, the brussels sprouts came out with onions. They were replaced with essentially raw brussels sprouts. When the waiter took them back, the chef insisted that this is the way they need to be served and that it was better for me to eat them that way --he refused to have them cooked better. I understand the concept of not overcooking vegetables, but brussels sprouts can't be eaten raw. The restaurant tried to appease us with free desserts, but they've lost my business for not being customer-friendly. The waiter was also forgetful -- it took a couple of reminders to get my drink.

simple, friendly food in cozy environment

By Boomer S |

Philadelphia continues to impress as a great food city. With more than it's far share of celebrity chefs it's very refreshing to find, simple, very affordable food in a relaxed and unpretentious environment. Great food, great service and didn't break the bank. Over the several days of being in town, colleagues and I ended up here on a couple of occasions. The gyros, roast pork sandwich and traditional Greek salad were all delicious, fresh, well proportioned meals. The oregano fries with the sandwiches are also amazing. And definitely finish the meal with a Greek coffee (picture Turkish style coffee without the spicy cardamon) - I had mine medium sweet and it was perfect.

BYOF ("Bring your own food")

By CarlottaW |

The short version: insufficient food, bland food, cold food, uninterested service, way overpriced (even for Valentine’s Day). Possibly my worst meal experience. We’ve never gone out for Valentine’s dinner because we know it’s not a bargain, but we had received theater tickets and thought we’d make a night of it by eating out. We made reservations at another place a month in advance but then canceled when they called to tell us there was a prix fixe menu, and there was little on the menu that my partner would eat. So we made reservations at Opa. Four days before Valentine’s, Opa calls to tell us that it, too, will offer only a fixed menu for $65. It was, of course, too late to get reservations anywhere else, but we looked at the menu and saw that it would work for us. Once there, we asked for a table in a warm location and were seated at the window, under a light with no bulb. (Since we were early, all other tables were open.) Server seemed unhappy to be working that evening and did not respond to efforts to be personable. After drinks, we had a first course of a small salad; the only other choice was oysters with granita. Odd choices for such cold weather. Then I had ordered the caramelized cauliflower: four small pieces of cold vegetable. Then a tiny plate of pasta with a bland mint-parsley sauce (my husband’s steak was lukewarm on top of cold potatoes). Then a cold piece of baklava. There were no extras at any point: no bread, not even the smallest garnish. When we asked about noticing that a person at another table receiving a normal-sized plate of pasta as an entrée, our server told us that she had told the kitchen that my pasta serving was inadequate, so they increased the size for later diners. We would get comped drinks as compensation. Had we not inquired about the discrepancy in serving sizes, I wonder if we would have received any explanation or compensation at all. It is infrequent that I leave a restaurant hungry, but that is what happened. It is rare to taste such uninspired cooking, and even rarer that a kitchen would showcase such mediocrity on an occasion when one expects warmth, lavishness, beauty. So on Valentine’s Day at Opa, you’d better be ready to feast on love, because you won’t be getting much more than that. And you’ll pay extravagantly for the crumbs you receive.

Hip Greek tapas

By RayKawa |

This restaurant has a great bar area but if you want it quiet ...it's not that. The food was generally very good, good for sharing as they are all small tapas style plates. The octopus and calamari are overpriced in my opinion because for $14.00 they are very small portions for what? Maybe the grilled Octopus is more expensive but the calamari? It's similar to what you can get at any place but you would get twice as much . Not that I'm saying more is better but really there's not much there that makes it worth the extra money. The rest of the food was pretty good . Just make sure they don't try and take your plates away before you've finished...this almost happened a couple of times and I had to tell them not to take my plates. I'm sure they are trying to be efficient but when you have small portions don't take it away before they are done. Otherwise the restaurant is pretty good, the food was good and the ambience was great. There is also an outdoor are in the back which seemed like a more relaxed option.

Disappointed

By Frank T P |

My wife and I ate at this restaurant last night. We had an appetizer that had apples and cheese on bruschetta. It was delicious. The main course was terrible. We both had pork based dishes. I had a pork gyro and my wife had a pork gyro platter. The pork was extremely dry and tasteless. If it weren’t for our server Zoey, who was fantastic, our rating would have been lower. We would recommend that you have several tapas style plates instead of the entrees. They looked really good.

Greek Night

By Gokhan |

Excellent service, food is out of this world, our server Dan went the extra mile to offer his best. Great tapas concept combined with Greek Cuisine. It's worth every penny!

Ok Greek

By Joanne M |

I shared dinner after a conference with some friend and we had made reservations for dinner after unsuccessfully being seated her the previous night. I order the pasticcio and was really disappointed with the dish. One of my friends ordered lamb chops, med rare, and was told that they are always served that way. Yet when they were served, there were well done and returned. The baklava was delicious though. I love Greek found and may give it one more try!

Nice place

By Crue1 |

In general, this is a nice place, with good food, and good service. I actually ate here on St. Patrick's Day with my wife and a friend. We all liked our food, and had good service from our waiter. I'm taking a star off for two reasons. First off, they have a very nice patio in back with its own bar, but this bar has a fairly limited selection of drinks, despite there being a full bar inside. This is understandable, but the problem is that the patio opens earlier in the day than the restaurant or inside bar open, so despite the front door of the restaurant being open, and needing to walk past the inside bar, and through the restaurant, your only option is the outside patio until the restaurant/main bars opens. It's just kind of aggravating to sit down at the main bar, or stand there waiting for a hostess, just to be snapped at by a teenage employee that the restaurant, and main bar aren't open yet, despite the patio being open. On second thought, I'm taking off another star for the attitude. I've gotten it twice now over the same dumb issue. This is just kind of frustrating, and makes me want to avoid this place because they must know by now how this arrangement with such a simple solution irritates their customers, yet they do nothing to fix it. I can't say I won't be back, but it's a shame that such a nice place keeps such an annoying setup. Oh, the other reason for the star deduction is that the Gyro is not like most Gyros, which are chopped, reconstituted beef and lamb, but seems to be big chunks of steak. Even in the more traditional style of Gyro, with various slices of meat on one spit without being chopped, mixed together, and pressed into a cone, we would still have thinly sliced meat, not big chunks like Opa's Gyro. I'm sure many people like this, as the taste was all right if you're looking for steak in cucumber sauce, but this is not a Gyro, as the menu suggests. Overall, however, I'd say this place is worth trying.

You will think differently about Greek food!

By gotthelondonbug |

We really enjoyed this small but lively place; nice bar in the middle of the restaurant and interesting and creative menu - kind of tapas style but doesn't have to be. We liked it so much during Friday Happy Hour, that we went back for dinner on Saturday night. Waitress was really helpful in explaining the menu. At first we were a little confused because we went thinking it was an Italian place, but we liked everything we tried and we probably had 5 or 6 different items; the pastitsio was the best baked pasta dish I ever had and the custard pastry was delicious. Got a little loud towards the latter part of the evening but interesting eclectic crowd to observe. Really recommend if you are in Philly and want something a little different!

Everything was delicious !!

By Terry327 |

My cousin found this restaurant and what a find !! We shared the Kalamari and Spanakopita and I will just say we cleaned the plates. The sauce that came with the spanakopita was unbelievably good and you shouldn't leave without trying this dish. We got the lamb and fish gyro and pumpkin pie for dessert. Everything was DELICIOUS and the favors wonderful. Our servers ( I do not remember his name and also the girl he was training ) were both very nice and helpful with explaining the different items and sauces. I will definitely go back and have already suggested it to a friend who is from Greece.

Great Greek small plates....

By Judith B |

We went to this restaurant pre-show, since it is close to the Forrest Theater. We loved the small plates of delicious Greek food. The beet salad, the tzatziki, spanakopita, just great fun sharing among 4 people. Very nice service, especially, since we kept asking for one more plate of this and maybe one more plate of that! Nice wine selection. Our only issue was an EXTREMELY loud table right next to us.

Delicious Greek tapas

By Mary F |

Modern twist on a number of traditional Greek dishes. Particular favourites include the saganaki with the apricot compote, scordalia with pine nuts and the grilled octopus with toursi (pickled vegetables). Reasonably priced and good service. Highly recommend!

A gem

By Amyjb952 |

A friend introduced me to this restaurant when we went out for a girls night several months ago. The food was excellent and the service was good. So one night I was in the city with my family, my husband and two children and our regular place had a 2.5 hour wait. We walked a few blocks and came across Opa and so we stopped in. We weren't disappointed. Food again was excellent and service the same!

Large portions, good food

By SueFritz |

This place was right down the street from my hotel. Very casual greek, but the greek salad with chicken was very good and huge. I ate there twice during my week long stay. Staff was nice, and there were always regulars in the place. I would eat there again.

Delicious food, fun atmosphere

By FrqntTrvlr1 |

We enjoyed our small plates dinner here. All of the dishes were excellent. Highlights were fried artichokes, eggplant dip, and lamb chops. Servings were on the larger side for small plates. Amazing watermelon cocktail. Restaurant is loud - not a good choice if you have difficulty hearing.

Try the chef's special

By ChiChiinEurope |

Fantastic menu sampler that ends with a dessert menu tasting dish. I loved the homemade pasta and desserts. The wild boar was incredible. The heirloom tomato salad was perfectly dressed, but the desserts, all homemade were so fabulous, it was really worth the extra calories.

The Name is the Only Thing Greek

By IBSTours |

Not really Greek. The only thing Greek in this restaurant is the name. The food had a Greek flair but certainly was not authentic. I would describe the food as a failed American attempt at recreating Greek cuisine. A pushy waitress, who could not come even close to pronouncing anything on the menu that had a Greek name, and rushed service accompanied the poor food. To top it off, the restaurant consists of a few tables surrounding the bar where there was a group of loud and sweaty rugby players chugging beers. This is certainly not a proper spot for a relaxing dinner.

So yummy, fun and chill!

By isabellajoseph |

I had a great time at Opa. I was there on Valentine’s Day with a larger group of family and was still seated promptly and served rapidly- even among the crowds of couples. The restaurant itself is very small so make sure to have a reservation if you are looking to sit down for a meal- if not, it looked like the bar area was large. My family ordered many small plates to share (hummus, filo pastries, hummus, gyro, and salad, ect.). Plates are on the smaller side so share a few. The restaurant has an enclosed beer garden in the back where you can wait for your table while playing board games and having a drink! Will be returning!

3 Great Nights

By Bet2forgood |

In town for a convention last month, walked across from the Holiday Inn Express, discovered this place and spent 3 evenings there. 2 nights with clients and 1 just for drinks. The food was EXCEPTIONAL! All of our clients loved the small plates, meat and cheese trays, and the atmosphere. So that was reason enough to go, but our bartender Minas made each evening AWESOME for us. Outstanding service, perfect drinks, can't say enough about this guy, really genuine. So even if you're 10 blocks away, Uber to Opa for a great evening.

Tapas spin on Greek Food

By Theresa C |

How full you feel, depends on how big of an eater you are. There were 5 of us, our bill was around $120 and no one had room for dessert. Now I realize, this may not be the typical experience...we didn't have any alcohol, so that kept the bill down. We started off by ordering about 5 small plates and we all tried a little of everything. The keftedes were pretty authentic...I could taste the mint. Olives, cheeses, etc...just the sort of mezze my Yia-yia used to put out when company was coming. Then we each ordered a mid size plate for our entree...the boys got the gyro platter which came with fries and was plenty to fill them up. We also liked that they were made with a choice of quality meats...not the mystery meat you'd get if you ordered at a city gyro stand. One of us had the spanakopita which looked to be made with puff pastry rather than filo. Still very tasty. Another had grilled shrimp and octopus...delicious and tender. And then there was a watermelon/feta salad which wouldn't be enough for an adult but was fine for our teen girl. Service was pleasant, ambience very casual and sport-bar like.

Poor Service and Bland Food Can't Save The Great Atmosphere

By Kreskin2207 |

My guess is the point of a $2 Anniversary party is to drive awareness, excitement, and grow the customer base. The only problem is that the service and food have to deliver. I wasn't expecting full size portions for $2 but what we got was extremely small. Either way, I can look past the portion size completely and simply based on food I won't return. The spinach croquettes (as they were out of the advertised lamb croquettes) were the highlight of the menu. I'm not even sure if they are on the standard menu. The gyro was okay (about the size of three fingers put together.) The surf & turf souvlaki was bland and cold. After realizing we'd have to spend $50 on the $2 menu to get remotely full we opted to order a few full size appetizers. The ribs appetizer, while pretty tasty, came with two small ribs and about 1/2 cup of sweet potato hash. That serving was $9 - for two ribs and 10 cent worth of potato hash. The greek fries were okay but they were just fries. The biggest issue was the service. I'm not sure if they weren't use to it being busy or they couldn't handle this anniversary menu or what, but the service was terrible. We had to wait 10 minutes for every drink we ordered (all canned beer by the way.) Our first order to the waitress was for four items - after 15 minutes we got one of them - the spinach croquettes. After inquiring and waiting another 10 minutes we go two more of the items. I inquired about the fourth again and ordered a fifth - the fifth item came 10 minutes later and after inquiring yet again about the gyro it finally arrived. Needless to say...it didn't live up to that wait. Love the atmosphere and the vibe, but the food and service were sub-par.

Excellent Greek restaurant

By Stephanie F |

Great Mediterranean dishes. The meals are not large, but it's a nice place to try a few different dishes/sharing. Nice interior and "feel" to the restaurant. Staff/server we had was one of the nicest people we met in Philly, and helped us plan a day trip to NYC the next day - very grateful to have met him. Overall great service, atmosphere, and food.

Try the Rabbit, it is great!

By Elvin16 |

We liked Opa. Good service, environment, and food. I would improve the speed. It took them more than 30 minutes to serve a table of 7 with the place less than half full. Anyway, the food was so good that I will be back.

Amazing!

By Jordie M |

We all shared the fava dip which was delicious. We ordered the beet and goat cheese salad, lamb gyros, chicken skewers, rock fish and Greek salad. All of our food was amazing and fresh with lots of flavour! The cocktails were also great. I finished with a serving of baklava which did not disappoint! Our server Dan was very helpful and he made our experience a great one. Would 150% recommend!

So please

By apriljohnson131 |

We had our “wedding reception” here. Party of 18. We cannot be more pleased with our service, food, drinks, and ambiance. Our waitress was out of this world!! She was so attentive and on top of her game with such a big party and heavy drinkers and eaters. The food was so good and fresh. We recommend the octopus, beet salad, cheese board, grilled cheese, lamb gyro, well- anything really. The Greek mojito was to die for!! The basil changed the entire dynamic of the drink that I wanted to drink down 5 more. We were super fortunate to get such a great place that performed so highly for us. Thank you Opa for making our wedding weekend so wonderful!!!

A downtown jewel

By JoyceInDC |

While vsiting the city on business, wanted to go to a restaurant within walking distance of the hotel. The one recommended by the hotel concierge had a 45 minute wait, so kept walking....and happened upon OPA. From outward appearances, the glass-less windows gave it a very inviting appearance. Upon entering, we found it to be cozy, but not cramped. Contemporary design was nice. Wait staff was extremely nice and offered several recommendations. We loved EVERY ONE!! Between appetizers, drinks, entrees, and lots of conversation, we never felt rushed. I would definitely recommend this one!

The Greatest Grilled Cheese/Cheese Toasty Ever

By Charles R |

Just out of the back door of the Holiday Inn Express Midtown is Opa. If you go, don't ask for a table and don't ask for a menu. Simply go in, sit down at the bar and order Greek Mom's Grilled Cheese. Simply the best grilled cheese I have ever eaten. The mix of cheeses combined with the honey brushed bread made this sinfully delicious. The fresh cut fries were great too. In addition to the grilled cheese, I ordered the gyro and was treated to a smokey serving of lamb with a light, great tasting tzatziki sauce. Our server Richard was a great conversationalist making the meal even more delightful. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone and look forward to returning for the greatest grilled cheese ever.

Dinner... and a club... and... a... beer garden?

By Dawn Z |

We went on a Saturday night - we had been to the Phillies game and so by the time we were looking for dinner, it was about 10pm. Hostess said the kitchen was open...it seemed crowded so we were happy to get a table. Drinks are pricey - but not extreme or any different than any other place in Center City. The appetizers were good - mini gyros, and meatballs were probably the favorities. We also had the grilled octopus - very small portion for the price! and the Mussels - which were OK - the broth was very good. We didn't have any main dishes. As we sat there, we saw a parade of people walk through the restaurant to what we thought was a back room. At precisely 11:00pm, the volume of the music was doubled, and the club atmosphere took over. Once we finished eating, we figured we should see what all the fuss was about in the back - and then we discovered Drury Beer Lane. It was an outside patio - and apparently there was a bar somewhere out there - but it was standing room only, and really no way to move - so we finished up our drinks and left. If we were not so tired from the traveling and game, and the drinks we had there, we would have tried to get a beer, but we left. If you are going for the beer garden/indoor club - plan on getting there before 11pm unless you want to stand in line!

Good food, great service and value for your money.

By Connie C |

Went to dinner before orchestra concert. Perfect walking distance from the Kimmel Center. Opa has great decor and ambiance. The food was delicious and great value for what we paid. I'd definitely go back.

so so Greek food

By Ternick |

Went there with family and friends during a weeknight, so it wasn't busy. Other than the assorted dip platter, the food was just ok. This is from a true Greek. The portions were small. There were two orders of lamb chops and some were a little tough and chewy. I ordered the stuffed pasta. Flavor was ok, but portion was small for the price. Another order was pastitsio, and it was a smaller ramekin size serving. We had to keep asking for additional pita bread as we were a party of 6 and they would bring out a small plate at a time. Server was good. I thought the alcoholic drinks were very expensive as well.

Happy Hour Food & Drink Specials are GREAT!

By Danielle C |

We stopped here before seeing a film festival movie at the Prince Theater. Happy Hour prices can't be beat here for the quality of food! The bartender was very experienced and knowledgeable. Tapas style, but filling. I'm not a huge fan of gyros, but these mini ones were spectacular. Got the lamb and the lump crab special gyros. The spanikopita was DELICIOUS. More creamy than any I've had. And the octopus dish...very good! Will definitely go back for happy hour.

Good Greek spot

By Travelpro513 |

I always enjoy Greek food, and Opa has several of the classics that are prepared and served well, with some modern twists. It doesn't have the extensive selection that you find in Greek Town Chicago, but what they do have is enjoyable.

Not really much of a beer garden....

By Daniel O |

I read about the Drury Beer Garden at Opa on a recent Yahoo travel story rating it one of the Top 10 Beer Gardens in the US. My wife and I tried to stop in for a drink early on a Saturday evening. The restaurant/bar section was over-capacity, with literally no room to move. We eventually pushed our way to the back exit to the "Beer Garden." It was essentially just a patio enclosed by a fence. There was a DJ, very little seating, and wall-to-wall people. We immediately left. I wouldn't really call a patio with a DJ a "Beer Garden." We didn't eat there, so I can't comment on the quality of the food. But I know if I had been eating there, I would have been furious with the number of people bumping into me and looming over my table, and the noise. I felt bad for the people trying to enjoy a meal in the midst of such a chaotic bar scene.

NYExcellent

By Duran W |

Modern Greek is what they title their food. My wife and I enjoyed our NYE meal at Opa. Many restaurants seem shy about being bold with flavor. Opa's (small plate) options were tasty. One item was a bit salty but very good. Their complementary bread/chip wasn't that good, almost threw our first perception off course. Replace that. The service was great, I think our waiters name was Dan or Dave...I've gotta do better with remembering good servers names. Overall Opa was a good choice to help us ring in the new year.

Great tapas

By Kimberly A |

Excellent decor, service and food. Appetizers are great and the mushroom filo was delicious. We were not offered a dessert menu but would not have been able to eat it any way.

Honestly - it's awful

By Russell M |

Pleasant staff - if you like salt, inauthentic Greek food - then enjoy. Dolmades so salty no bite no vinegar - seriously some of the worst Greek food I have ever had. A travesty

Good tapas but a little over priced

By suer889 |

Like all restaurants in the area, it was crowded and difficult to find a seat. I ended up sitting at a table on the sidewalk right outside the door, which made for interesting people watching but was a little precarious. The food was good - tapas - but a little over priced for what it was.

Awesome food, OK service

By sunworshipper |

This is my second visit to OPA - I returned after dining here last year. It's a very casual spot, but the food is to die for. Authentic Greek; amazing fish, vegetables, meats, etc. Waitress seemed less than excited to be there, but the food made up for it.

Best Stuffed Peppers

By Katie M |

I came here once for a date, and the next night I made my girlfriends go with me. Their stuffed peppers were to die for! They came out of the kitchen piping out, were very affordable, and the service was attentive. It's very loud in the restaurant and there's not much to look at, but the food was good!

Great Greek!

By VivienneR811 |

Thoroughly enjoyed our food and drinks here! Wait staff were very helpful in explaining different items and helping us select dishes.

Lovely food and great service

By Nata S |

I loved the restaurant. Food was amazing, ambience was chilled and service was outstanding. Makes me want to travel to Greece soon.

Rather enjoyed eating here

By Pibochen |

Walked past this restaurant and liked the look of the place and booked for the same evening. When we arrived, we were hit by a wall of sound It was Friday night and the bar was in the middle of the restaurant. It was VERY noisy. We almost walked out but we were getting hungry, so we stayed. Ever so pleased we did. We had several mezze dishes. Calamari, olives and feta, pitta and vegetables with 4 dips and deep fried courgette/zucchine slices. All very lovely! Our friend goes to the Greek Islands most summers and it brought back good memories for him. The portions were large and we could only managed one main course between the 3 of us. The lamb chops were tasty. Just a shame they were well-done. They always over cook the meat in this country. The lamb would have been meltingly tender if it was left medium. So that was a pity. Had we know, we would have asked. The wine list was all right, a little on the short side. As I was the only one drinking, I ordered a beer. At $4, I thought it was cheap enough. I didn't notice the wine being that expensive. Yes, it will be a lot cheaper in Greece, but this is America, after all. The waiter was very good and he offered me a dram of Euzo as a digestif. Nice! When we came to pay the bill, we were pleasantly surprised how reasonable it was. Very happy to go back, but we ran out of days in Philadelphia. Hope it is still there when we are here next.

a nice menu in a nice venue

By Scouternurse S |

We came upon this while walking...Saturday night without reservations but we were seated within minutes. Modern; clean; not too noisy.. The staff was very polite and caring as they answered our several menu questions...Their wine choices were adequate; the menu option I tried was fine; and the prices were moderate(around $14 a person or less)

Great Choice for Dinner in Central Philadelphia!

By handhnh |

We found this restaurant after the one we had planned to go to was too crowded and noisy. The menu looked very good and the ambiance was nice so we took a chance. Immediately, we were seated and our server came right over. I had the grilled octopus and my husband had the vegetable bread. Both were delicious. Then my husband had the tuna and I ordered the sea bass, both great choices with the sea bass being outstanding. Someone at the next table ordered the whole fish which looked wonderful and he said it was "a winner", We will definitely go back.

disappointed

By uj1994 |

We saw good review, but have to say pretty disappointed. Way overprised for what you get. $17 for chicken dish, came with 3 small chicken pieces and rice, no pita, no salad, nothing. There was no customers, but took 30 min to get our food. Grill octopus was ok not worth paying $14, $9 salad was small, but good. We paid over $45, had to find store for snack becuase we were still hungry. This place is for people who want to drink at bar and want to order appetizers, not for people who actually want to eat and get full. Waiter was nice though..

Worthless ripoff

There's a reason you never need a reservation to go here. They'll cheerfully give you overpriced tiny plates that are hardly edible in a dark little hole in the wall. Stay away.

Such a cute place

By Tanya T |

This is a very good place as a bar but also is nice to take a sit and have a dinner type of thing. They serve kind of Greek tapas, so small dishes for a medium price, so you should get 2-3. I tried about 6 and all were delicious! Desserts and coffee also were great. The interior design was so warm and welcoming

great ambiance, food hit or miss

By AMA10036 |

Our group of 4 shared about 10 small plates. Some items were delicious, but we thought the dips were just OK. But the service was good and we got seated right away. And the bill adds up quick, since you tend to order so many dishes.

Opa! Opa! Opa!

By Maxx882 |

Fun atmosphere for a serious food experience. When entering the restaurant, Mia will greet you with a smile. Attention to architectural and design details is a must….reminds me of some of the tavernas I visited along the Greek Isles. Servers are friendly and helpful. General manager Elias watches over everything with a careful eye. Presentation of the food does not deceive….everything is tasty. Just notice the smiles of the many diners. Although the kitchen stops service around 11pm, the bar continues to be lively till about 2am. OPA!

A place to avoid

By 633hungry |

My wife and I went here for a Valentine's Day dinner. First they tried to seat us at a table with a view of a parking garage, right by the door where a blast of 15 degree air blasted the table whenever the door opened. I asked for another table and they said they couldn't do that, IN AN EMPTY RESTAURANT! Eventually, after we made enough of a fuss, they moved us to a better table. An hour later, when we left, more than half the tables remained empty. Apparently the adage "the customer is always right" never penetrated to the staff of OPA. Then, there was a prix fix menu and a truncated a la carte menu. I wanted to order from the a la carte and my wife wanted the prix fix. "NO" Once again, not possible. The waiter said the entire table had to order the same way. I asked if my wife could get the prix fix if she had come in alone. "Of course". So then why not just pretend we are two separate tables? Here, there was no budging from their utterly illogical position. The worst part was the food itself. This is a greek restaurant. You'd think they'd have hummus and eggplant dip down. But both were almost inedible. The Tzatziki was good, to be fair. But all of the dips were served with about 10% of the pita that would be needed to eat them, and every time we asked for more pita, they gave us another 10%. We got fried zucchini strips with Tzatziki. These were 90% breading and super-greasy. And their greek salad wasn't really even a greek salad. It was more a tomato salad. In short, the main dining room of OPA is pretty, but the food and service were absolutely awful. Perhaps this is why they were mostly empty on Valentine's Day, one of the busiest days of the year. There are so many good restaurants, including Greek restaurants, in Philadelphia now. There is no need to subject yourself to this place.

Dreadful food

By PelleasPhiladelphia |

We ordered eight different dishes because they are so small and not a single one was even passable. We are adventurous eaters so that wasn't an issue, this is just bad food at a very very hefty price. $10 for 3 grape leaves, $7 for dry flavorless humus with one pita, etc! Probably the worst meal I've ever had in philly.

What a gem!!

By Julia S |

When we did a reckie the evening before we weren't sure if this was a restaurant or a bar but it looked interesting. We were right on both counts as there were folks sitting enjoying a drink at the bar whilst diners around the room enjoyed a variety of food from tapas to larger meals. The atmosphere was super, very chilled and laid back. Staff were attentive without being over bearing. We had a selection of tapas which was delicious. The thing we really liked was being able to order as we went. Often we order too much and end up leaving food. Being able to select as we went was ideal. There was a good selection of wine available and we were particularly pleased to see Retsina available especially at the amazingly cheap price! If I lived in Philly I can imagine this an after work retreat with friends for a drink and nibbles as well as somewhere for friends to go for an evening out.

Don't go if you are over 25 and not blonde.

My partner and I had reservations for 7:00. We were seated promptly in the. Orneriness the restaurant and served a glass of wine as requested. The waiter took our order and left. Three other tables including one group of young women ( I am 48, my partner is 65). We watched as the waiter offered to charge one of the girls cell phones, took their order and the order of three additional tables which were seated in the next 40 minutes after we had been sat. All of the patrons were younger. Each of the tables recovered our meals while we sat still waiting, we asked the waiter 35 times to check on our order. When my partner stated we would walk if our order was not there in 5 minutes, the manager came over and asked if there was anything he could do, "Yes, bring our order" our order my partner replied. We kept our word and walked, humiliated that at 9:00 when we left, we had nothing but two.glasses if wine in our stomachs, I shared this story with a colleague who is also in her 70&s. She shared that she and her partner had the exact same experience. The first question she's jet me was; " was everyone else there younger than the two of you?" Ironic? I doubt it. We'll never be back. This restaurant apparently is too ignorant to know what age group has the most expendable cash and leaves the best tips. Save your time and go where a business cares about their customers no matter what their age.

I really liked it -- greek restaurant, tapas style

By Marco L |

I was in Philly for a conference and needed a place to eat. I was happy that the concierge of my hotel suggested Opa...finding it was pretty easy. Once I sat down, I ordered an appetizer (stuffed pitas), an item from the grill (octopus), as well as a dessert. Food came out pretty quickly and was cooked excellently. For example, it's easy to get the octopus very chewy...this one, on the other hand, was very tender. Portions aren't big (if that's your thing), but you get to try a lot of dishes. Local beers were on tap and -for me- that's a plus (I enjoyed a Conshohoken).

Another fun find!

By jmonson |

Stopped in Opa for a drink and snack during Happy Hour. It is a lovely restaurant with an extensive Greek menu to choose from. I ordered their spicy duck taco on the recommendation of the bartender. It was very good. Looking forward to returning and trying something substantial. The menu looks great.

OpaMG!! ...for lunch...

By Mark T |

I grew up in Detroit, where they actually have a Greektown area that's bursting with Greek restaurants, pastry shops, etc. And ever since they built stadiums for the Detroit Tigers and the Detroit Lions right next door, hotels and casinos have been sprouting up in and near that treasured island of Mediterranean delights. In contrast, when I moved to Philly in the late '80s, it seemed to be a virtual 'food desert' as far as Greek cuisine was concerned, to the point that after a few years, I gave up looking for a decent Greek meal. But somewhere along the way, while I wasn't paying attention, a whole lot of Greek places either started up, or came out of the woodwork. OPA is one such place, and thankfully it is right near where I work, smack-dab in the middle of Center City Philadelphia. I took one of our company's investors there for dinner a while ago. The food and drinks were great and the place was packed – but with all the distractions, I didn't fully appreciate the creativeness or quality of the cooking. Just recently, though, I met a business associate there for lunch, and that's what prompted an 'OMG!' reaction -- from me, and from my guest. Not only was the atmosphere less hectic (and thus more conducive to business conversation), the 'build your own' combination plate offerings were mind-boggling, and what came to the table was even more so. I won't go into details about the food. Many others have done that. But I will say that OPA is serving creatively refined versions of the plates you will typically find in Greek restaurants, combined with fantastic new preparations of gourmet quality. Every item on the generous sampler plate was rave-worthy. Chalk OPA up as a potential favorite for lunch or dinner!

Nice greek food in a trendy atmosphere

By Poli |

I picked this place for a date night with my husband and it was a great choice. They do have good greek food and the place is really trendy, with a modern decoration and good music. We had the olive tapenade, the calamari and honey ribs, which were all good. The spinach croquettes were such a creative appetizer and just delicious! Food comes in small plates, so it's best to share them and try different stuff. To be honest, on a Saturday night it felt more like a bar (in a good way - crowded, exciting), we picked a table at the rear and it was perfect. Recommended!

Great patio area for drinks

By Mike L |

We went intending to out out to McGillans or Bru next door but they were packed so we all of a sudden noticed this really nice patio area. They had gas fire places, heaters, plenty of seating, reasonably good beer selection, attentive outdoor bartenders and very reasonable prices for Center City. I would definitely hang out here again. We didn't eat here so I can't comment on that.

Great Food!

By tgedmonds |

Fun restaurant with GREAT food! The fried zucchini chips were awesome and worth the wait! The servers were very accommodating and friendly. I will be going back soon!

Good Greek!

By smoorec |

My husband and I both enjoyed our dinner, we ordered a couple of small plates to start and then kept adding additional plates until we were full. Service was friendly and quick. We especially enjoyed the grilled octopus and the butternut squash in phyllo pastry.

A Disappointment

By Sciuricidus |

We were in Philly for a visit and stayed at the Holiday Inn Express downtown. Opa was recommended to us, and it was right across the street, so we went there for dinner. I love rabbit: when my wife pointed out that they had it on the menu, I ordered it. The menu description had implied that it was served with pasta, but when it came it turned out to BE "rabbit pasta," according to our waiter. Instead of pieces of rabbit, as one gets in any other restaurant that serves this dish, and which I was expecting, I received a mound of long, doughy pasta strands with what was alleged to be rabbit meat scattered here and there in it. This was drenched in a gooey sweet sauce that simply obliterated any other flavor. If there was as much as five ounces of meat in it I would be surprised. I'm willing to give them the benefit of doubt and admit that it was, in fact, rabbit; but since I couldn't taste anything except the sauce, it could have been chicken or cat, for all I could tell. I've eaten rabbit in restaurants on four continents and never have I seen anything like this dish. I always received what was recognizably pieces of rabbit, cut in the way a chicken would be. The waiter explained that a) it was "rabbit pasta," which isn't how the menu described it; and b) rabbits are "very small animals." Given that a domestic rabbit weighs as much as a frying chicken, this explanation for the paucity of what was supposed to be the main ingredient was suspect. My wife had the lamb shank, which was a very generous portion, and well prepared but dry. Service was very slow. We waited for 20 minutes before anyone took our order; and for 10 before we were served with water and the bottle of wine we'd ordered. There was no bread of any kind served at all. There were no side dishes with the meals. The price we paid, $139 including wine and tip, for two people, was outrageously high for what we got.

Fun Greek Tapas

By jayjackson81 |

Pretty decent drinks, especially if you like to be adventurous. The food choices were a fun take on some traditional greek restaurant dishes. Great calamari, nice crisp but tender. Brisket ravioli was flavorful. Best experience was the lumpmeat crab on pita - fresh, flavorful and for once a restaurant creared an aoili that wasn't a thick oily disaster. Take the chance in a trendy part of Philly. Enjoyed the recommendation.

Great food and great service!

By DebMC123 |

We had a wonderful time ordering all sorts of things to share, and our waiter, Jessica, was terrifically attentive without rushing us. The food was delicious, with inventive takes on traditional Greek specialties, and “the standards” like spicy whipped feta and tzatziki were delish! When can we go back?

Can't fault it - the best Greek food I've tried.

By sammy978 |

Ate here whileon business after walking for about 15 mins without being able to find somewhere chilled out to eat. As a fan of Greek food i was really pleased, especially when I tasted the chick pea fondue that came with the octopus. Really fine flavouring and original ideas. Oh and whatever the other person suffered in their review, I had no trouble whatsoever. Excellent service and great food.

First Time

By travelingbeachbum00 |

We tried this for the first time before the Walnut Street Theater and thought the food was fine. It is really more a bar that also serves food than a restaurant. The bar is very lively and rather loud during happy hour so be prepared. The souvlaki and the gyros were good as was the hummus appetizer. Service was fine as well.

Fun Restaurant/Bar

By Natalie K |

I've been here for both dinner and the bar scene. Overall food was decent, but a little pricey. Their selection of summer cocktails was just right for the season and I recommend most of them - I don't think one person was disappointed with their choice. As for the bar scene, this place becomes an entirely different spot after 10 pm. Bar service inside is pretty slow - it gets really crowded and there are usually only two bartenders available to take orders. The music is really good though and there is a great flow between the outdoor and indoor space. I would have to say that I like this place as bar better than I like it as a restaurant, but I would recommend it as both!

Average Mediterranean

By Melissa Lallo Johnson |

This place was average. We had the cheese board with honey, beet salad, hummus platter and and I had the lamb gyro and it was good but for the money I would prefer other places in Philly.

We thought we were in Greece again!

By 110vivian |

We stumbled upon Opa just because we were tired and it was directly behind our lodging. Boy did we luck out! The 4 of us decided to order the Chef's Four Course Dinner as recommended by our outstanding server, Stephanie. It was the most amazing dining experience we have had in a long time! I can't describe every dish in detail ,but they all were amazing. Here's a go of the dishes..Greek salad with olives, onions, tomatoes, cucumber. Cheese Board with almonds, apple slices, fig spread, goat cheese, 3 other types of cheeses and bread. Salmon with fava beans, tzaiki /basil sauce ,pork skewers, lamb chops with Brussel sprouts, Mahi Mahi with grilled lemons and artichokes, flourless chocolate cake ,baklava, ice cream with a cinnamon mound. We enjoyed all this with a very nice red wine that Stephanie recommended. Chef Bobby was in the Zone! He came out to our table several times to check on us and see if we were happy with the selections! What a talented and welcoming Chef!!! We were so wowed that we came back the next night and sampled more of the small plates! Thank you again OPA!

Beer Garden in back courtyard

By DoylestownTraveler |

Looks like they ordered a dozen picnic tables, slapped a flat screen on the wall and installed a bar in a back alley loading area of a nice restaurant. A dozen+ of us went on a pub crawl. This was our second stop after McGillin's (which was fun). I'd consider the restaurant but not the "beer garden". They also have a few games on the tables and planters on the word fence. Not enough decor to make you think you're still in an alley.

Good Greek Food

By Ash_Dover |

Greek restaurants are not that common so for that reason alone this restaurant is worth a visit. The menu has a great selection of Greek dishes. The potatoes are fabulous. The horiatoki was tasty, the ingredients were super fresh. The fish was tasty and perfectly cooked. A good selection of wines. The wait staff is helpful - they will willingly direct you toward a dish and to a wine. One draw back - it was so cold by the window that we asked to move.

Good food but inconsistent portions

By travelluvr |

We visited OPA on a saturday evening. I had made a reservation for a party of 5 several days before. We arrived on time and sat at the bar about 1/2 hr before our seats were available which was no problem for us. We had delicious drinks at the bar, a Greek Margarita and OPA Martini - spectacular! The guys had Dewars and a few beers. Our seats were very cramped(the guys were both 6'5) but after asking we were allowed to spread out a bit and we were finally comfortable. It is a very small dining area. The food tasted wonderful but my complaint was the inconsistent portions. A calamari appetizer fed 5 of us but the spinach croquetts were barely enough for 2 - same price. The swordfish special was minuscule while the lamb shank could have fed 2! My son ordered the pastichio and it was appetizer size. Most of the patrons looked to be enjoying a ladies night out. There was a loud group of men at the bar but they were just drinking.(.too much!) With so many restaurants to try in Philly I can't say I would go back but it was a pleasant evening...mostly due to the company we were with. Our server was very slow and just sort of blah... the bartender was nice & we enjoyed sitting there before dinner.

Romantic date night

By Brendan W |

Brightly colored dishes, flavorful, and romantic setting. An expensive but lovely date night. Amazing meal with great food and service.

Great Spot for Drinks

By Cait |

For some reason, I keep coming back. I simply see Opa as a great bar in Center City. The bartenders are friendly and attentive. The food is decent. The atmosphere is plain, unassuming, yet intimate and modern. It’s not really trying to be anything, and in Center City where every restaurant is trying hard to fit a very specific type of eatery, that is welcome.

A touch of Greece

By Lynda R |

First impressions of this restaurant are misleading, since it's a no frills kind of place. The decor isn't much to look at although the food is very good. They offer both small and full plates of Greek crusine at reasonable prices. Highly recommend getting the whole fish entree.

Wonderful meal, excellent wine

By NancyWWH1963 |

We tried Opa at the last minute with no real expectations. We were delighted by our meal, our server and the very reasonable price point. The food was exceptional and we will return to Opa again

A Pleasant Surprise

By Ingrid W |

A wonderfully intimate dining space with center bar and apparently a beer garden in the back! Joined friends for an evening of celebratory small plates. We tasted: mussels (bathed in deadly pot liquor); French fries seasoned with oregano & other spices; lamb skewers. Two orders of the eggplant spread w/pita, which we all agreed was the freshest most deliriously creamy & flavorful. Last, but not least...the kalamari was tender, but the batter proved a tad too too salty for our palate. I think it was said the red pepper aioli provided some balance. Our server Antonio was very attentive, as was the floor manager, who inquired at our table often. Well worth the trip. We plan to return!

Beer Garden

By TLP156 |

Our group of 11 stumbled upon this gem totally by accident. We were all pleasantly surprised. The outdoor tents were warm and cozy during a very cold night. Staff was attentive and friendly. Beer selections were good. This will definitely be on our agenda for next year's Army/Navy game.

Not anymore there

By Georgios B |

The restaurant doesn't exist anymore. I was in town and I was looking forward for some greek food but the place was deserted.

Don't go!!!!

By Joseph B |

We had dinner at the restaurant and the food was excellent. However, two of our friends went out to have a cigarette and the bouncers wouldn't let them back in even after telling them that they were dining customers at the restaurant. After quite a bit of arguing back and forth, one of the two was left back in to pay our bill, and the manager still did nothing to smooth over the situation. It was only after we left and I called the restaurant to tell the manager to come outside, and again, after confrontation about the total disrespect for their customers, did he finally offer a gift card of $50 for the next time we come. We will NEVER come back and I recommend that you avoid this poorly run establishment.

Loved loved the tapas

By Robin P |

Great food, loved the tapas type of food. Great selection of foods. Waiter service was a little awkward/disorganized. We asked for more Pita (4 people) and they kept serving our dishes without the Pita. Then when they brought it out, it was only one piece at a time? But food was great. Great little place.

Found the Food to be So-So

By Kevin S |

This restaurant was hit and miss. It is a little on the pricier side for a Greek restaurant, but not so much to keep you from trying it - particularly if you are in center city. We had the veal meatballs which were tasty and accompanied by a nice tomato sauce. The mussels were very well prepared and accompanied by a nice white sauce which did not have as much garlic in it as expected. The grilled artichoke sounded like a good idea, but I find so much of it to be unedible that I didn't enjoy it, others may. The "traditional" gyro was disappointing in that it was made with grilled slices of beef as opposed to the traditional mix of meat and spices. I found it blah. The plate of mixed dips (humus, tziki, spicy feta, and pickled vegetables) was good, but nothing that we would return for. In short, we found nothing either outstanding or horrible about the food at this restaurant and you should probably give it a try to judge on your own.

Greek small plates are great!

By rcgaynor |

The nice, open and high-ceilinged restaurant was about half full at 5:45 on a Sunday. Very nice hostess and server! Pastitio was uniquely seasoned (I've been to Greece) and loaded with béchamel, which is necessary for a great dish! The village salad was authentic, with tasty cucumbers, olives, feta and peppers. The cheese board was one of the best I've ever gad, with 4 varieties of cheese, honey and other goodies. Well-priced wine choices as well, with all by the glass as well.

Delicious

By jannylou1946 |

Great service- wonderful plates to share. Mushroom pie excellent! Server was attentive. Nice selection of draft beers during happy hour. Nice atmosphere.

Unique Greek Cuisine

By Fran N |

We dined there last week with another couple. The food and service were excellent. However the portions are extremely small. For example, the grilled calamari, while extremely delicious, was about four bites of food.

Nice atmosphere with a great bar

By Patty1229 |

We stumbled across this place while out roaming for the evening in search of snacks at various restaurants. We grabbed seats at the bar and were glad we did because the next several couples came in looking for a table and they were booked with reservations. Nice combo of upscale yet relaxed atmosphere. Really good grilled octopus. Would definitely go back for a full dinner.

Great food, great service, relaxing but alive atmosphere.

By Joseph M |

Liked everything. Unhappy with nothing. Will definitely return. Food was very good, service was outstanding. Didn't try cocktails. Took a few minutes to be seated, but hostess was friendly and apologized for the delay. They serve small and medium plates, great for tasting a lot of different things. Calamari was the best I've ever eaten. Octopus, mushroom ravioli very good. Cheese on fire and fish (skate) were also very tasty, but maybe a little salty for some taste. Desserts were too good. Greek cannoli (waiter will recognize it if you ask for that) was the best. Greek coffee a must for coffee lovers. We had Richard for our waiter, he looked like he came from the Greek isles and was very friendly, helpful and efficient. All in all a perfect night.

Small but worthwhile

By Michael W |

I happened on OPA while on a business trip to Philadelphia. I hesitated to go in because it seemed so dimly lit. But no matter. I was not disappointed by my visit. I ordered the chicken dish and it came to the table prepared perfectly with just the right amount of supporting vegetables. I also tried one of the local beers and that, too, did not disappoint. If you looking for a small, quiet dining experience on one of Philadelphia's narrow old streets, this is a good choice.

Food was good but expected more

By juliebI8555NY |

I like this place, I wish I felt it deserved four stars but it just missed the mark a little for me. I didn't have anything that was not good but I thought the dolmathes were just ok (this is spiced ground beef wrapped in grape leaves, my first time having it) The gyros were good but you get two small gyros and I understand it's tapas but they are small! Just left me wanting more. The butternut squash filo was amazing though. Easily your bill gets to be really high as you try to order enough small plates to not be hungry. It's good, but just come for lunch

Very unusual dining experience.

By Tim B |

So we were wandering around the city looking for someplace to eat with out a real plan. We found this place and decided to give it a try based on the inside appearance and a quick glance at the menu. The decor is very interesting. The menu is short and unusual and the portions are small. Our waitress did warn that people usually order two entree's each. We did not head her warning, it seemed odd to us, and we ended up leaving hungry. I ordered phesant which was a first for me. It was good but I would have liked about 3 times as much. I don't remember what my wife ordered but she thought it was ok and not enough. My son ordered a meal that was supposed to be shared among the table according to our waitress and it was the correct amount for one person. The restaurant calls themselves "family style" I think. They explained that to mean that the food comes out as it becomes ready. The result was that I was entirely done when my son's food arrived. We did not like this feature. We would not return to this place but I'm sure there are some who would find it interesting.

Mostly Greek offerings. Somewhat interesting presentation.

By Donald S |

Food quality was mixed. Pasta was way undercooked (mushroom ravioli). Lamb, Brussels sprouts, calamari, sardines, stuffed cabbage, stuffed grape leaves all fine but nothing special. One pays extra here for being in an "in" place. Packed. Very LOUD. Service is just okay. Long waits often for things often forgotten (20-25 minutes for a second drink or glass of wine) seemed excessive. Summary: If you're a foodie, you're likely to be disappointed. If you like to be seen in an "in" place, you'll be thrilled to death.

great tapas

By rimavh |

our group of 10 celebrated a birthday her. one of us is Greek and fussy (well, a few of us are fussy but thats another story). she was very pleased. The food ranged from good to excellent. We tried a lot of things...the pasticio was excellent, the lemon potatoes devine. The meatballs were very popular, as was the Feta Olive platter. the only dish that didnt get licked clean was the parpadelle - surprisingly tasteless. service was friendly but a little slow. the drinks (cocktails) sounded a lot better than they tasted. we went on Memorial Day Sunday so it was not crowded and the street outside (Samson) was bustling nicely, however the restaurant could have used a little OPA umph...a little Greek music - live or otherwise. so many great places in the city for us suburbanites otherwise he'd hurry back asap

Fantastic value!

By heidisue15 |

We stumbled upon this restaurant via an internet search. What a delight. Too many good things to choose on the menu so we opted for the Chef's Special and put the decision in the hands of the Chef's. Plate after plate came out... Heirloom tomato salad, cheese plate, crostini w asparagus, wild boat ragout, seared chicken and 3 desserts!!! Opa indeed! The chef even came out to chat w us. Thanks again for the culinary adventure, Chef Bobby.

Great food, poor service

By AlyssaShaffer |

I'm going to start off by saying the food is absolutely wonderful, and would 100% go back for the food, however we had some very poor service while dining here. Mya, the hostess, called 15 minutes before our reservation at 8 to tell us to arrive on time so we can order before the kitchen closes at 9. I assumed an hour to order and get food is plenty of time, but gave her the benefit of the doubt because maybe the food takes a long time to cook, I had never been to Opa before so I had no idea. We get sat at our table and our server Ashtyn also proceeds to tell us the kitchen closes at 9 almost immediately after greeting us. We felt rushed from the get go and proceed to make rushed decisions on food and a bottle of wine to share to accommodate the restaurant closing at 9. The time the restaurant closes is verbalized about 3-4 times throughout the meal by our server. The service was quite disappointing because the food was phenomenal and rushing us seemed totally unnecessary as we were not the only people in the red eating, they had steady business at the time of our reservation so why were we being rushed?

A mouse is normal??!!

By Kreskin2207 |

Decided to stop by for a couple drinks...the drinks were going great until I saw the mouse running around the restaurant. I alerted the bartender who shrugged and commented "well, you're always going to have one running around." Really?! Cuz I go to a lot of bars and restaurants and I've never seen a mouse running around! I've been here once before and the food was mediocre with terrible service, now this...done with this place. Waaaaaay better spots for anything you're looking for in this city....Greek food, drinks, or the singles crowd....go elsewhere.

consistently great and a good value

By Beth M |

We love this place. Its a nice twist on traditional Greek food. Its mostly small plates great for sharing.

Nice setting; too expensive

By fganter |

This place is pretty much Greek tapas. The servings are simply too small for the price. We ran up a big bill and left hungry. The crowd was pretty nice and the setting in general modern and trendy. There are much better places to spend your money in this area.

great greek food

By amraac |

I got the quail, which was surprisingly delicious. My friends got the lamb shank, which they both loved and said was well-seasoned. The best was the striped sea bass with dandelions and greek potatoes that my friend got - wish I had gotten that, as it was much tastier than the quail. Great ambiance and friendly staff.

Decent Greek Food

By Jeffrey A |

Food was pretty good, and they had a decent selection of alcoholic beverages. Staff was pleasant, but nothing special. I recommend the dipping sampler, hummus was delicious. I wouldn’t say it was the best food, but I would go back there again

Excellent in all respects

By James D |

My wife and I had dinner here the other night. She had already been, but I had not. It was still during restaurant week which can be problematic. Not so at Opa. Everything was first rate, including the server who was delightful. My wife had fish and I had lamb chops as our entrees. Both were terrific. For starters, we had the octopus, meatballs, and greek salad. The feta was nice and tangy and the other starters were perfect. The octopus was not the least bit rubbery and the meatballs were very flavorful and of a perfect consistency. Brilliant all around. The desserts did not disappoint, although we were a bit full to be able to finish. The baklava is made by the owner's mom and it was not too sweet as can happen. This was a wonderful meal and we will definitely return.

Interesting Dishes

By benny3345 |

Went here for dinner. Their offerings are mostly small plates so expect to share. I don't recommend this place for someone who avoids dairy as it appears in a number of dishes and while they were very forthcoming with that information, they weren't willing to help make the dish dairy-free friendly. Their suggestion was just to get something else. Everything that we did eat was very good. The spread sampler was good and a good chance to try some different types of hummus. The sea bass was also very good. The place had sort of a dark/modern atmosphere and was pleasant.

Tasty and reasonable brunch

Opa was surprisingly empty for our recent visit for Sunday brunch. It's a really neat space- it feels cozy, yet is pretty spacious. It's got a neat, rustic ambiance. Our food was good- my husband went for the steak and eggs, and his over-medium eggs were cooked perfectly ( that almost never happens). I got the spinach pie, and it was pretty good. I'd probably try something else next time. Their complimentary hummus and bread was excellent. Random note, but their bathrooms are really nice. And in the basement (near the restrooms), I saw a beautiful private dining room for about 8-10. I filed that away in case we ever want to do a birthday party or other event there.

Great food, atmosphere and service

By Snezhana N |

The food was very good. We were recommended to take 2-3 dishes per person due to their sizes, however after 2 dishes I did not have any space and it turned out they have a dessert card. So make sure you also ask for the dessert card or you save space! We came back for a second visit and the weighter was very nice and helpful, the food was delicious both times. Everything was seasoned very well! From what I tried I can say the following things taste amazing: The greek feta salad, the grilled octopus, the Olive oil cake with Rosemary cream (this one was a real winner!!!!), the skewers, The flambeed cheese (always nice to see a flambe, but the balance between sweet and savary was also super nice) as well as their fries (amazing seasoning, really....) Would deffinitely go again, you shouldn't miss this place!

Beautiful outside

By Brandon F |

Went here with a bunch of friends for a good night out and was not disappointed with the outside bar and fun atmosphere!

Not impressed

By rsmith7 |

We went there for an anniversary dinner. I had quail and was very unimpressed. I kept looking for the meat and was disappointed. The martini was strong so sharing would be encouraged. The mini gyro appetizers were ok bit not really a Greek flavor. Won't be going back.

Good for Lunch

By Ken P |

Very interesting decor. Very good service. Excellent lunch menu. I had the eggplant and olive spreads. Very generous portion. Serve with vegetables and Pita. And like that the waiter brought some more Pita to me on his own and I had more bread then to use with the abundant spreads. The octopus was excellent and tender. The spinach croquettes were okay. My guest had a chicken sandwich which was very good and the fries were excellent.

Nice dinner spot!

By DannyD81 |

Greek-style food in a quaint little spot in downtown Philly. Food was incredible. Service was excellent (thank you, Jesse and other staff). A great find with a nice atmosphere. Only downsides: 1) no option suitable for kids. Now, it's really not a family restaurant to be fair. However, it's still nice to be able to enjoy an adult dinner and be able to feed your kid. 2) wine list very expensive. Similar to another review of mine, not too pricy considering you're in downtown Philly, but still not even one reasonable option.

Found online.. Happy I did!

By gabahatcher |

I was in town in business and have friends in Philadelphia. We were going to meet up for dinner and I found this Greek restaurant near my hotel by searching online. Great find! The 3 of us shared spinach croquettes, saganaki.. 2 orders it was so good, meatballs, and an eggplant spread. The eggplant was the one dish we agreed was not the best choice. The others were served at a nice, hot temperature and the eggplant was almost chilled cold. This was an odd sensation on the palate. My husband makes amazing Bougsta and I had to try theirs. This was not anywhere as good as what we have at home. It was not served hot and was a bit soggy. I understand Bougsta is different per family but this was not what expected. The wine was decent, at least not all Greek! I would recommend this to anyone traveling or if you live in Philadelphia.

Great food in a hip atmosphere

By zinconinco |

I ordered several things off the small plates style menu when I was here with a coworker for dinner a few nights ago and everything we tried was delicious. It was also so much food that we had to take quite a bit of it to go! The restaurant itself is super stylish and chic. The service was great and very friendly. Also, as a vegetarian, I was able to find plenty of options to choose from.

Nice evening out!

By deb02459 |

We went to Opa last PM with another couple. The atmosphere was lovely, food selection interesting and tasty. The service was excellent. We enjoyed it very much and will go back again!

Small plate dining in Philly

By Karol J |

This was a small plate dinner option. We tried six things between the two of us. One plate was better than the last. Very good! Can not complain about any thing. Definitely worth trying...

Brunch

By Stewart C |

First time at brunch. Only party in the restaurant. Service not on target, server could not explain some items on the menu. Bloody Mary not as described on the menu. Food good, but portions very small. Figured out why other spots had lines outside, and no one in restaurant, but us. Go for dinner, skip the brunch.

Great atmosphere and Greek food in 'Midtown Village' (Center City)

By pachachuck |

This is right in the middle of 'Midtown Village' and close to the Convention Center, the Marriott and Lowes hotels. It has a very active bar scene after work, but we went for dinner. Everything is shareable and good. > The Greek salad was a good size and a good start > Always LOVE the Saganáki! (and they give you a generous portion with pita...) > The Fried Zucchini (Patatákia Kolokithioú) is a visual treat and is served with Tzatziki. Yum! > Next, we had the slow braised lamb (Arní Stámnas) and it was also delicious. > Of course, we finished our meal with a Baklava, again great. Food and service were fine (even for a crowded Friday night) Music was loud, but most of the patrons are 20's and 30's, so............. Great dining experience for us!

Just like you are in Greece!

By PattieCooney |

We had lunch at OPA and thoroughly enjoyed everything about the restaurant. The service was attentive, and the restaurant has a casual atmosphere. We started with the spreads that were served with piping hot pita bread. I chose to have the Mediterranean sampler which included half a sandwich, salad and an appetizer - what a value!!! I had the grilled cheese (decadent) with a salad and chicken souvlaki that was amazing. Others enjoyed the grilled chicken, and of course a gyro!! If you want authentic Greek food, don't miss OPA! Can't wait to return for dinner.

Undecided about Opa

By MABM917 |

I just moved to Philadelphia from New York City. I have lived in Manhattan in Greenwich Village for 20 years. I am used to having local haunts and am searching for them here. I am undecided about Opa. I have been twice in the last couple of days. Both times were late afternoon. I had wine and a mezede. I tried the hummus and the eggplant salad. Meh. Wine was fine. Service once they realize you are there is v nice.

Beautiful atmosphere, great service and good food!

Had an amazing meal with friends - all the food was delicious and the service was excellent. We really enjoyed everything including the speciality drinks. It is a place for a date or dinner with friends or family.

Overpriced Food, Small Portions

By SMartHistorian |

This is a bar/restaurant combo with Greek food. There's a long wait for a table on weekends, though you can eat at the bar if there's room there. The food is average, the portions are small, and the prices are high. To of us shared an appetizer (tzatziki and pita) and an order of fries, and each had a lamb gyro (slider size really). This came to $39, and wasn't nearly enough to eat for a dinner. More than that, the food wasn't all that tasty, though it was nicely presented. Knowing this, I certainly wouldn't eat here again.

Good try, guys.

By Hedin |

This place has been finely decorated and delivers a good experience. It's a Greek restaurant that tries to present food in modern style. Everything was good and there was very fine service. It's a quiet place -you may enjoy a chill-out dinner after a busy business day.

Drink in the Beer Garden

By Albr0150 |

I had drinks and some appetizers in the beer garden. Drinks were fair priced. Service was great. The food choices were limited as could be expected out back. Atmosphere was really low key and friendly.

Greek Food Done Right!!

By phillygirlmich |

So after a wonderful day at the Art Museum with my boyfriend, we decided we wanted to go for a nice dinner that was affordable. I used my Open Table app on my smartphone (strongly suggest everyone uses this app!) and we scrolled through the restaurants until we saw Opa. We checked the menu and saw the prices were very reasonable so I booked us a table for 6pm. We arrived right on time to a very active bar and restaurant but were seated promptly. Our server John arrived shortly after and introduced himself and asked if we wanted anything to drink. We stuck to water, only because we were going on a pub crawl in a few hours. After looking over the menu, we decided what we were going to eat: For a appetizer, we shared the char-grilled vegetables. It was plentiful and everything tasted so fresh and clean. They roasted red peppers topped with a cheese that was so good, I spread it over my vegetables into an explosion of flavor in my mouth. My boyfriend did the same thing as well. For my entree, I chose to have a Gyro as that is my favorite. There was a ton of lamb in my sandwich, however I found it to be a bit chewy. The tzatiziki sauce was so good, I asked for some extra to dip my fries in instead of ketchup. As for my boyfriend, he wanted to have the Soutzoukakla (cumin seasoned beef and lamb kebob with a spicy tomato yogurt sauce on pita), but was talked out of it by our server John due to the fact it was a small portion. Instead my boyfriend ordered the Butternut Squash Pastitsio. It reminded me of a vegetarian moussaka but uses butternut squash instead of eggplant. Either way, it was absolutely delicious. I only had a small bite of it, but what I tasted made me want to trade meals with my boyfriend!! We knew we wanted a dessert to share and asked John for a menu. Three items caught our attention. We were torn between the Loukomades (Greek Beignets), Chocolate Fondant, and Baklava. After going back and forth for five minutes, we gave up and asked John for his opinion as to which dessert to order. As soon as John told us the Baklava was homemade by the owner's mother, we were sold!! It came with homemade fig ice cream. Seriously, to all my readers, when you go to OPA, GET THIS DESSERT!! YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!! It was so good, we almost forgot our table manners and were going to lick the plates clean!! Total amount of check was $50 (including tip). We tipped high because of our quality of service!! Trust me, if you want incredible Greek food (that is also seasonal), make sure you come to OPA!! And ask for John as your server!!

Pretty good

By Luv2Travelw2boys |

Loved the Greek variety - most of the food was very good. Beet salad has pickled beets and was too tart. Really enjoyed the atmosphere and vibe in OPA. Would go back for another Greek meal and Greek wine!

Great tastes! Wonderful service!

By cyndi011 |

This was my first time visiting and we had a larger group (12). We ordered all sorts of small plates from the menu- the food comes out as it is ready so we had a steady stream of terrific flavors. The staff was very nice and accommodating to our questions. Throughout the meal we kept changing places to be able to talk with everyone at the long table and it didn't phase them.

Terrific dinner!

By Virginia Adams O |

We had a lovely dinner at Opa! The atmosphere was bright and vibrant without being too loud. The restaurant is charming. The charred broccoli appetizer was delicious as was the Greek pizza. The gyro plate (we chose lamb) was surprisingly the least interesting of the dishes we ordered. The lamb seemed under-seasoned and the dish would benefit from a larger portion of accompanying tzatziki. The most amazing dish was the spanakopita--hands down the best I have ever had. We ended the meal sharing a baklava which was tasty but over-spiced--hard to actually taste the walnuts. Our server was the BEST--Jesse was personable and just the right amount of attentive.

Great service

Stopped n Phili on the wa back from NC to Boston. Had dinner here. Waitress was exceptionally knowlegdeable about the meu. Food was excellent. Ha a great time and will goback fr sure

Decent choice

By Daboma |

Opa was recommended and we were able to get a same-day reservation on a Saturday night. It was a short walk from our hotel, and we were seated right away. The decor was nice, and we had a table by the window (a little drafty on a winter night, but no big deal). It did take our server some time to get to us, and she was flighty on some things, knowledgable on others. She gave good recommendations on dishes. The door was really, really good.... Spinach croquettes and stuffed peppers were yum. The pasta was a little dry. Only complaint is the beet & asparagus salad.... There was almost no asparagus, and the few scraps were skinny and small, with no taste. The beets & whipped goat cheese were delish, may be better served not including the asparagus in the headline! Prices were ok. Agree with other reviews that this is. It the place for traditional Greek tastes, but was good for a last minute meal.

After theater dinner

By Christine N |

Opa gives Walnut Street Theatre subscribers a 10% discount do we decided to give it a try. We had the spinach croquettes, the village salad, the smelts and the Gyro plate with shrimp. Everything was delicious and served family style. Each dish was brought out when done. It was a great way to sample Greek foods. Baklava finished off the meal and was also very tasty. Jesse was our waiter who catered to our every need. Would recommend and will visit again for sure.

Excellent food and nice atmosphere

By Amanda G |

This is a small plates Greek restaurant so we ordered 9-10 dishes for the three of us and had a bit left over. Every dish we ordered was amazing - I recommend the garlic spread, the village salad, hanger steak, saganaki cheese and Greek cheese plate. Its a great place to enjoy a relaxing meal of non-typical Greek food. We were in Philadelphia for 3 nights and had dinner here twice!

Cute bar, sweet staff, enjoyed the beer garden.

By virginia t |

We were drinking and snacking and hanging out with a bunch of Army Navy in the beer garden and it was perfectly warm and cozy on a really cold night. We would go back!

Not By Olives Alone

By 44olivier |

Since the waitress described several dishes in glowing terms, my companion and I felt confident to make our selections. He chose the lamb gyro for 12$, and I the sampling on a board for 13$. At best, my selection could barely pass for a paltry offering of spice laden hors 'ouvres. The attempt at an aesthetic presentation with selected olive and hot peppers could not compensate for the stinginess of food offered.

A lot of really greek good food

By PaperogaArchimede |

We went there with some friend that live in Philadelphia and they chose the plates for us! We shared 7 different dishes and everyone was better then the others! Everything really greek!

Fine Greek Cuisine, But Far Too Noisy

By Sam B |

I met my sister at Opa, because we share a love for Greek Cuisine, and the center-city location was convenient for both of us. Unfortunately, we were initially seated at a table close to the bar. The level of noise coming from that crowded location made it virtually impossible to carry on a conversation. Fortunately, after an extended conversation between the hostesses and the manager, we were moved to a table in a somewhat quieter area of the restaurant. Even at this location, the ambiance wasn't really conducive to a quiet conversation, although we managed well enough. The food was fine - standard Greek dishes (saganaki, spanakopita, calamari) well prepared: nothing particularly memorable but definitely serviceable for the occasion. I would suggest that you go here only with a crowd, assuming that you are in a mood to celebrate

Great Greek Grub.

By sanojmon |

My wife and I have to been to Greece and really enjoyed the way Opa was based on Greek cuisine and had a modern look. Restaurant decor: Nothing fancy, but an island bar made of stones. The lighting was perfect and made for a great mood. Music wasn't loud, but enough to enjoy. Oh..and beer garden!? Food: Absolutely great! We tried a bunch of small plates. From saganaki to gyros sliders to keftedes, the taste was great and the portions left us perfectly pleased. Wines: I'm not a huge wine-drinker. My best attempt at a wine IQ is 'Can I get a riesling?'...to which they had something comparable to. My wife described her palate, and they found something also. Overall: Great wine. Great food. Great staff. Great place to go to on a nice night!

Meh for drinks.

By Ryan C |

We went for drinks and our waiter was just weird and a not with it. He brought the check early, never asked if we wanted more drinks but told us the kitchen was closing in an hour. There are better drinks out there. We stopped in because this was the only place that wasn't packed, a red flag we didn't heed.

Great service

By Lianakc |

When I visited this restaurant it was for an early dinner so the restaurant was pretty empty. The server was very nice! She explained the drinks & several food items to us. We decided to order several appetizers so we could have a variety. It was a lot of food! The croquettes were delicious. The spread (4 different spreads with pita) came with a generous portion of each along with veggies. Loved the spicy feta spread! I also ordered the mussels. It was a large portion. They were good...not great. There are a variety of Greek drinks. I did not have any but they looked great! Overall I would go back. For the prices you do get a lot of food in my opinion.

Average to Good Food

By Zaid B |

Opa is a nice place that I believe could be better. The Food is good but not that good for the price paid. The location is right in front of a parking lot which could be played around with some graffiti to add a touch of art rather than the grey concrete slabs.

Excellent food and service

By Alejandro L |

The concept is greek tapas so of you are really hungry you should consider ordering at least 2 entrees. Their flavors and quality is outstanding. A little bit pricy like all restaurants in Philly downtown, you end up paying around $60 for two people including taxes. Add to this the tip.

Excellent restaurant

By swanjac |

Enjoyed the food and atmosphere. The service was excellent and the staff very friendly. The tapas were plenty big enough and a good idea. Would recommend this restaurant to all ages

Minuscule portions - forget this one!

By AnnapolisGuy2014 |

This type of food does not have expensive ingredients and yet a $12 Billage salad is served in a monkey dish - I am not the Village idiot!

Excellent food and drinks, great ambience, attentive service

By Seth A |

Excellent food: brussel sprouts, beet salad, pastitsio, octopus, and shrimp souvlaki. I would order all again except for the pastitsio, which was a little dry. The octopus (1 large tentacle) was particularly delicious. Drinks were yummy and with a Greek twist: kinouli, and greek mojito. A glass of wine -- the Kir -- was delicious too. I would definitely go back.

Greek food in small portions

By DDay1959 |

We stopped here for dinner. First of all, the food was delicious. I had the lamb gyro and my wife had the chicken. But that is all you got for your money. I am not sure what they were going for, however, if starvation was the goal, mission accomplished.

Nice little place off the path

By Pete S |

The food was excellent , waitress was never all there. It took her the whole night to warm up and was still dry. A little on the expensive side for the portion size. Once again food is very good.

Fabulous Food and priced right

By 2011-CO |

Charming...great menu...definitely try the "Meat Plate"...other favorites were the brussel sprouts, butternut squash and humus...we each chose a small plate and with the "Meat plate" there was plenty for four...

Unique Greek

Off the beat and path. delicious tapas size appetizers. The best cucumber soup I ever had.

Modern Greek

By Ann L |

Never would have thought of pairing watermelon and feta in a salad but it was amazing-the feta complimented the sweetness of the watermelon. . For main course I had the special of shrimp with fettuccine-just wonderful. Sauce was so good and shrimp perfectly cooked. Husband had the pork skewers with oregano fries and the white bean soup. Both were excellent. Our waiter was attentive and his explanation of the Greek wine was very helpful. The decor is very nice-love the niches with the lanterns. Will definitely return to Opa next time in Phillie.

This restaurant has great food!

By lindycalifornia |

My husband brought me a lamb gyro last night. The lamb was really delicious ! The tsadiki also was very good and well prepared. I was impressed with the pita but since I’m not eating carbs now I skipped it. It was hard to skip! My husband had the same dish . He really liked it as did his friend. My egg lemon soup was delicious!!

The Fish of the Day won me over

By Bahram R |

This restaurant has an amazing atmosphere! Although the outside is your typical downtown Philly, the atmosphere inside was fantastic. I'd recommend seats away from the windows personally. The food was fantastic and honestly cooked to perfection. Not very oily at all, everything tasted fresh. And the best part was their fish of the day. I had skate (a type of fish that tastes like fish and crab-meat combined) for the first time in my life and I can't wait to try it again. Definitely a must-visit.

Sample Size Food

By kayakgirl75 |

So we went for a birthday. I thought it was going to be special. The food is very small. We left hungry. The food tastes good but nothing WOW.

Shocked

By Kyle F |

I was so shocked by our experience at Opa. My boyfriend and I arrived for our reservations and were quickly seated. The staff was really nice and the server seemed to be on top of things. He went over the menu and told us which entrees were "family style" and "to be shared" as he put it. We ordered a charcuterie board and that was most definitely not my cup of tea, but my boyfriend loved it. The bread was terrible. It had such an odd taste. So, we ordered the roasted chicken and the server said it's made very simply.. That's perfect for me, because I'm a very simple eater. I don't have much variety, but I eat chicken in almost every way. He brought a table over and put the two 2-person tables together and said it will be over in a moment. So, he brings out the chicken and we asked for fries instead of seasonal vegetables, and I was SHOCKED. The chicken was so small. There's no way that's shareable unless you're both like 100 lbs, but we are of ordinary size. It was cut in four pieces - only one bone. It had so much fat through it. The taste was terrible and it barely seemed cooked. I couldn't even get through one of the small pieces. The fries were okay. It was barely edible. I was so upset because this small terrible dish was about $21-22 (can't remember for sure). The server took so long to get our check and process it. Both waits were very long and we saw a lot of him standing around talking. It was frustrating. Would never go back.

Great Food, Great Drink, Great staff. Lovely Decor!

By Ada F |

Yesterday I got out of work at 3:00 PM to get a head start on Memorial Day weekend. My husband did not, and he plays softball on Fridays. What do I do??? Arrange mini pub-crawls by myself to explore the city (I commute in via train; I do not drive). Last night I found Opa!! It is now one of my favorite Philadelphia bar/restaurants. It attracts a very mixed age group: the younger peeps seem to gather in the lovely courtyard out back; it's very lively, nice separate bar; just gorgeous. I am an older peep and felt more at home at the inside bar filled with mixed demographics. It is a Greek place, one of my very favorite foods. They had a good selection of American craft brews (I had the Ithaca Flower Power), and this awesome selection of Greek wines that they try to translate with American comparisons. I had the 'Sue" wine which was an excellent version of our Pinot Grigio. I also ordered Dolmades (3 beef stuffed grape leaves) and a plate of Tadziki sauce, I try to avoid carbs so I asked for a single small grilled pita bread, and a small plate of fresh dipping veggies. (the pita and veggies came with the sauce). Everything was fabulous!! The bartender's name was Luighsighe (pronounced, Leisha), HUH??? I can't say enough nice things about her. She guided me through the entire ordering experience! The restaurant and rest rooms were spotless; the food and drinks reasonably priced; everything food and drink was perfect. What else can you ask for?? I will be back often!

Enjoyable

By judy U |

We had an enjoyable early dinner dining on small plates with good flavor. The two of us shared five plates and especially liked the beet salad, the Brussel sprouts salad and the mushroom ravioli. Service was friendly and attentive. Good spot

Best dolmas ever!

By Ivan S |

Intimately lit space with very friendly bartenders. The dolmas--grilled--are the best I've had. Excellent lamb gyros, too. It's become my go-to when in Philly.

fantastic meal and great service

By DanHanLan |

My wife and I went to Opa before a show, early on a Saturday night and were so happy that we did. We are both fans of Greek food and it came highly recommended from a few of our friends so we decided to give it a shot. The food was terrific, the décor is contemporary and intriguing, and the cocktails were interesting and exciting as well There were three dishes that we especially enjoyed. If you’re looking through the reviews you’ve probably already read about the Grilled Octopus, it’s truly fantastic. It was very tender and the salad it’s served on really complemented it nicely. We will pretty much always order eggplant when we see it and tried the Melitzanosaláta (eggplant spread). It was really flavorful and well spiced as was the Manitária (mushroom plate). For desert we did the Beignets and the Baklava. The Baklava was very good, but the beignets were far and away the winner and there were plenty for sharing. There were a number of Greek wines available and the wait staff was really helpful translating varieties we were familiar with into ones that they had on offer. I was a little disappointed in the draft beer list; it was pale ale heavy which is terribly popular, just not my cup of tea. Fortunately this did push me in the direction of the cocktails. We tried two and enjoyed them both. The spirts tend toward things that are popular in the US currently with some flavors that one might consider Mediterranean. Also, they do have a bottle list that has something for just about every taste. I really enjoyed the design of the restaurant. It’s not something I always pay a ton of attention too but the inclusion of the rocks around the bar and the wood accent wall really help transform the place. It’s definitely worth a visit or two. We will surely be heading back and I’d enthusiastically recommend it for anyone who’s going to be in the area.

"Just a delightful lunch!!"

By Alysb |

Entered 'just' as opening at 11:30......greeted by friendly server Alyssa....and seated at front table with a sidewalk view on a sunny day. I had previously checked the menu....and ordered the Spanakopita w/village salad (tomatoes, cucumbers, kalamata olives, peppers, onions and feta cheese)......and of course Greek red wine. My lunch was delicious....a beautiful presentation....and large! This spanakopita is not what you usually know....it was big and round and tender with a great filling wrapped in homemade filo....a nice sauce underneath with grilled scallions. The wine 'pours' were a very nice portion. I truly enjoyed my chat with Alyssa.....a lovely lady......and I did get a chance to compliment the chef Bobby. He came to my table to say hello and I spoke highly of my entree. He said his mother and grandmother taught him how to make the homemade filo pastry. I will definitely return!!

Great small plate dining of some of Greece’s best flavors! Service was top notch, intimate setting, quiet and calm atmosphere. Very enjoyable. It was a meal that took us back down memory lane to our time in Greece. Thank you!!
