So good we ate there twice!

By Citytraveller08 |

So this is pricey but really good food. We ate here both of our 2 nights in the city and service was not as good the second time but the food and wine are worth a visit. Good bar and bartender as well!

Second location a winner!

By LuannMC |

Excellent choice for delicious tapas and a fantastic wine selection. We have been going to the smaller location on Richmond for years and decided to try the new location. We were not disappointed - had a wonderful lunch of tapas and a delightful bottle of Portuguese Alvarinho. The baked goat cheese in tomato basil sauce was so good, I'm going to try to duplicate it at home. We sat outside and even tho you are right on the street - they have planted producing fig trees, olive trees and grape vines to shield you from the road and it is brilliant! We will definitely be back!

Best Sangria!

By windbailey |

One of our favorite dinner/date night spots in Houston! The atmosphere is warm, romantic, and inviting; the staff are very nice & welcoming; the food is awesome; the sangria (specifically red) is BOMB. Our favorite items to order: Salada Atlantico, Piri Piri BBQ Chicken, Polvo Com Batatas, and the Brócoli pizzette (sub mozarella for ricotta). All the drinks are super delicious, but highly recommend a carafe of the red sangria!

Excellent service and vegan options

By kiwivegan |

A beautifully presented restaurant in midtown. Very close to our airbnb, they have a comprehensive menu with many vegetarian options and several that can be adapted to vegan. Enough that we ate there both nights we stayed in Houston. The chefs are talented, and the presentation is good. The wait staff went out of their way both nights to provide personalized service. We loved the ambiance and total dining experience. So refreshing to get away from the deep-fried culture.

Fantastic Date Night

By smlkennedy |

My husband & I really enjoyed dinner at Oporto. We went during happy hour on a Friday night & were able to get a table without a reservation. If you are going later in the evening, I'd recommend making a reservation. When you first walk in you will notice the wonderful ambiance & the scent of delicious food! We enjoyed several happy hour sized tapas from the happy hour menu, they were all fantastic. Caprese Salad, Fried chicken Pao, Batatas Bravas, Picandinho Poutine, and Blue Cheese Bruschetta. We loved the house red which is a Portuguese blend. We'll be back to try additional tapas! There is street parking & after six, there is valet parking. We found street parking within walking distance no problem. This would be a good restaurant for families, but I'd recommend going earlier in the evening. The service was fantastic. Everyone was very nice from the hostess to the servers.

Neat place, pretty good

By dancingbelle47 |

Busy on friday night. Don't take reservations for groups less than 8. Told me they would put my name on the list of I called an hour in advance, but then didn't honor that once I got there. But we were able to get a table outside. Service wasn't that great. Got brought someone else's food. Extensive wine list. Huge menu. Lots of food. I got the potato soup. It was ok. It was all liquid, no pieces of potato. A few pieces of kale. 2 pieces of chorizo. Then got the lamb meatballs. They were pretty good. Good sauce and naan bread. My aunt got the rocket salad and the crab and avocado crostini and enjoyed both. Nice ambience. Classy place. Free valet parking. A little overpriced and over rated for the service and food, but still good.

Excellent!!!!

Went with my sister and niece....terrific tapas variety...mostly seafood on this trip except for the Ibiza ham... Cannot say enough about the ambiance, quality of the food, and a very pleasant and patient waiter.

Portuguze Food and Drink is a nice setting

By JAN ERIK J |

Have visited this establishment on a number of occasions and is particular enjoy siting at the bar and enjoying a glass of Portuguese wine and some tapas and the meat&cheese selection. Staff is very helpful. A tip they have the onoy Spanish single malt whiskey I have ever seen. Please try the empanadas, house smoked salmon, Canja soup plus the ham/sausage selection.

Excellent Food and Service

By Anne O |

We hosted a work-related event for 14 people and couldn't have been more pleased with the service, atmosphere, and food during our event. Our server was very helpful in recommending popular dishes, and kept the food coming for our group. Small plates are a great way to break the ice with people who don't all know each other, and it was easy to accommodate various dietary needs (vegetarian, gluten free, etc.) Most of our guests had never been to Oporto's before, but all of them said they'll be back!

Great menu , reasonable prices

By Pete2665 |

Was impressed with menu selection . Food well cooked and presented . Daughter says her food very tasty . Reasonably priced selection of cleverly matched fish and meats. Will be back.

love this place

By T P |

I was checking out new restaurant in Houston on google and found this place last Monday. Glad that I did. When I saw an Indian dish in a Portuguese restaurant made me skeptical so I asked the waiter why they have Indian dish, he said because the owners are Portuguese and Indian. So we ordered the famous chicken curry empanada as people suggest and personally I wasn't impress with it. Then we tried the Seafood balchao curry and we love it, and we ordered the Paella Portuguesa and this one is the best dish. We also have the sangria and it wasn't bad neither. Service was great, the waiter is very friendly great on suggestion. Sorry I didn't remember his name but he should receive the credit on it. I surely will come back for more items on the menu.

Great tapas...

By TravelQueen4Evr |

Great spot for tapas! They offer a great variety of small plates and delicious cocktails. This is my "go to" location for Happy Hour. The bacon wrapped dates are a MUST! Complimentary valet parking is a nice convenience given the location.

Be Sure to Get in for Happy Hour!!

By CreateSF |

A party of 5 of us decided to try this little gem. What a treat! The food is amazing, and if you can get in for happy hour, the prices are SUBSTANTIALLY less than the regular menu. I do have to say that the bar-tending staff seemed inexperienced. I asked for a very dry Grey Goose martini and watched the bartender dump a jigger of vermouth in the mixer. I was like, 'wait wait....DRY martini please!'...We spent over $200 for the 5 of us and that was with 1 person not really eating. The only issue with the waitress is that we did ask for 2 bottles of sparkling water and she completely forgot it until the end when we were ready to leave.

Fantastic evening.

By GilliWh |

We were a large group on a very busy Saturday night, but we were warmly welcomed and accommodated with excellent service. The good and wine was enjoyed by all and many were trying Portuguese plates for the first time. We particularly enjoyed the specials and the coconut ice cream was delicious. A very enjoyable experience.

Absolutely delicious!

By Deutsch16 |

I'm still impressed with this new restaurant. The service is outstanding, I loved our European waitress. The food is so tasty! I had the paella (plentiful!), and a bunch of tapas, all of them were fantastic, the octopus was the best. I absolutely recommend this new gem.

We keep going back

By Mitch A |

We've been several times for lunch and dinner and just keep coming back. This time it was a spontaneous evening out and we were in the neighborhood. We had the Cataplana Mussels, huge mussel meat, wonderful flavor. We also had the Xacuti de Galinha ( a chicken and potato curry) also outstanding. This is not always on the menu. Sometimes things just come together and this night it did for us. We'll be back. We got away for less than $100 including wine and tax. Tip extra. I would rate this as middle of the road cost for downtown houston.

Good food, horrible service

By cesi100 |

After my European trip, Here I come back to Houston, for a brunch. Rainy day, only 2 other people in restaurant. 2 waiters, a barman, 1 busy boy and the cooks. It is rare to find such a disinterested server anywhere on Earth. Coffee took about 10 min to brew (must have been a difficult process) and had the taste of instant Nescafe. Because the dish was very salty I got charged extra 4 dollars (whatever) for bread, after the waiter thought very hard what kind of bread they would have. The frosting on the cake was WAITING time for the bread to be sliced, and brought to the table -must have been very special. I could not stand it, especially because they were very loud and having fun chatting, all servers, minus the busy boy (the most attentive person there, he should be the manager). I went and asked what is the delay: it is taking time to get from the computer to the lady- who sliced it and toast it. I was like- appetite gone, this people are something else. The cooks are good and I hope my tip went to them. Disgraceful behavior in service industry. NEVER AGAIN place. I have a never again car wash I will review on yelp.

Memories of Portugal

By Hedra68 |

I luckily found this spot after doing a quick search for good happy hour specials. Their HH menu is incredible and their dinner entree prices are on spot. The food brought me memories of my trip to Portugal since all of my favorite Portuguese specialties are offered. The restaurant offers complimentary valet parking starting at 5p. The HH runs from 3-6:30pm which is plenty of time to taste many great small dishes. I truly enjoyed the caprese salad, the salmon avocado tartine but my favorite was the grilled octopus with batatas bravas. Of course I couldn't wrap the evening up without having a traditional pastel de nata, absolutely delicious. The music playing in the background is pleasant and loungy, reminding me of mixtures of Brazilian, Spanish and Portuguese beats. This place is great for a dinner with friends and also for business dinners.

Great midtown restaurant

By efustok |

It is becoming rare to find a restaurant that lasts more than ten years in Houston, which tells you they are doing something right. Especially when it is a Fri at 10 and the place is still packed. It was delicious from start to finish, I highly recommend the scallops, the seafood curry, and a charcuterie board. My minor complaint was that if you are sitting by the window the air blows really strong there, and I was freezing, but the server was so kind to let them know and they did turn it off for a bit.

Loud, Loud, Loud but Very Good Food and Wine

By Thomas D |

Not quite sure how to start this review.....My wife wanted to try this restaurant with the tapas menu that looked excellent. I have to say the food was very, very good and very tasty, with a good wine list and good service once you actually get to sit down. We tried to make reservations ahead of time only to be told they took reservations for parties larger than eight. When we arrived there were smaller tables open but we were told they were reserved: after questioning the hostess we were told those were reserved at the Manager's discretion. OK.....not quite sure how that happens but this started the evening off very poorly. Either you take reservations or you don't for smaller groups. We definitely felt like second-class citizens. Secondly, parking is poor and not clearly marked......go directly to the garage behind the restaurant. There is NO valet which is odd for a relatively nice and seemingly upscale restaurant. After sitting down at one of the community tables in the bar area (and deciding to actually stay after our bad first impression of the place) we ordered wine and an appetizer before the evening Manager came to see us, and we voiced our displeasure regarding the start of the evening. He was pleasant and eventually found us two spots at one of the bars: this was a distinct upgrade from the community area. As mentioned the food is very good, and the wine list is above average: our waitress was very pleasant but at times disappeared for long periods having long conversations at other tables, and certain plates took a long time getting to us. Overall, the evening was very inconsistent and troubling, but knowing what we know now, we will probably be back avoiding the early evening happy hour. The crowd is distinctly VERY young, and the noise level is EXTREME.....I could barely hear my wife talking directly into my ear. We will try this place again based on the good food and wine, but try to make it another time of the day/week. Perhaps these are simply growing pains of a relatively new restaurant.

Our favorite Portuguese restaurant!!

By maddiekorra |

We sat at the bar at our favorite spot. Shaw did an amazing job recommending drinks and food. We went with all his recommendations and they were tasty and delicious. I was taken by the shrimp, octopus and the pizza. Shaw is a great asset to this operation!!

Delicious Food

By RosieT_05 |

Went for a business lunch and the food was phenomenal! We had a variety of tapas dishes and all were excellent.

Food with Flair

By ellzebeth |

Visited during the week with a group of girlfriends. Our waiter was incredibly friendly and attentive. Food was good, but not great this time. Food the first time I came here was more on point. Overall, the vibe is cool, prices about mid-range, and food pretty good.

Excellent meal - Do your tastebuds a favor and eat there!

By PamBF |

One of the best meals I have had in the last year. We were in Houston for the Eagle’s concert and the hotel front desk person recommended this restaurant. We were lucky enough to have a young lady named Michelle A.as our server. She took the time to make recommendations and explain the dishes. I highly recommend the Scallop Farrotto - the scallops were cooked perfectly and the bed of deliciousness they sat on so Yummy. We also had the crab and avocado crostini so fresh! My husband had the Camaros Piri Piri and he thoroughly enjoyed them! We shared the batatas bravas and oh so many flavors together! Overall this was an excellent dinner! Again thank you to our server because had she not taken the time to explain we wouldn’t have the chance to try all of these tasty dishes! If we get back to Houston we will be having a meal (or two) there!

Interesting mix of cuisines

By DianeSpiering |

Oporto has an eclectic menu of Spanish, Portuguese and African inspired food, which has been excellent on every visit. The menu is seasonal and the chef's execution of the many small plates available is spot on. The modern décor is beautiful and the booths are actually comfortable - a lot like sitting on a couch. The wait staff is always efficient and friendly, giving informed guidance when asked. I love to go there for the ever evolving brunch - oh, and did I mention the wine list is awesome??!! I normally don't get excited about devilled eggs, but they were a revelation. Great place to enjoy family, friends and food. the food is influenced by Spanish

Great Happy Hour - Excellent Service

By aethomso |

We recently moved to Houston and tried Oporto Fooding House & Wine for Happy Hour since it was recommended to try their happy hour menu. The happy hour menu offers reasonably priced smaller portions of the dinner menu. Their menu is small-plates (tapas). We tried the salmon crostinis, mushrooms, prego and caipirinha drinks. The drinks were delicious and the service was excellent. I would order the mushrooms and prego again (but skip the salmon crostinis). Next time, I want to try the filet skewers (think Brazilian steakhouse).

Excellent foood, wine, and value

By Virgilio C |

My wife, son, and I decided to go out on a limb and try some Portuguese food at Oporto. We were not surprised at the delicious tapas style small plates, which gave everyone the opportunity to try different tastes. And even a vegetarian like me had several excellent choices. We also tried a Portuguese wine that was very good and very reasonably priced. The service was a bit slow, but we were not in any hurry. We did arrive around 6:30, which was just before the rush, so we got a table when we arrived. Oporto does not take reservations for less than 6 people. The ambiance was a bit loud, but I guess you have to expect that when everyone is enjoying their meals. Overall, an excellent experience. I thoroughly recommend Oporto - we'll be going back.

Really tasty!

By nread |

Visited this great little place and was pleased with the happy hour menu, very reasonable and super tasty! Everything we had was great so I think you will be good with whatever you order. Our server did interrupt us a couple of times when clearly if we had wanted something we could very easily have asked, other than that first class experience, and there is complimentary valet parking which I love!

Really tasty lunch

By SansarYatri |

Really enjoyed our lunch. Pork Vindalho, Polvo Com Batatas and Madeira Bread Pudding were delicious. The Squid Fried Rice was a disappointment, the squid was chewy and did not have much flavor - would not order again. Service was erratic and slow considering there were not too many guests at that time. Interior is nice and bright, not too noisy at lunch time.

Excellent date restaurant

By DaSensei |

Found it while looking for a new cuisine to try. Went for a lunch date and we had a excellent time. The three course lunch special is an excellent way to taste variety of dishes. Will plan a future visit.

Excellent

By cmedina2113 |

Came with some friends to enjoy and we were not disappointed! The server told us we could close our eyes and point at anything on the menu and not be disappointed and it was 100% true. We enjoyed the stuffed dates, batatas, hummus duo, cataplana mussels, scallop farrotto, curry chicken empanadas, lamb ribs, bread and finished up with the desert flight. Everything was simply amazing! It’s tapas style... so perfect for friends or with a date! Will totally be back!

Great atmosphere and food

Had dinner here with another couple. Great Portuguese dishes. Nice size servings and friendly, helpful staff. We'll be back!

A step into Portugal

By Michael S |

Amazing. Just looking for a fun meal and lucked into this grant restaurant. We started with the Caldo Verde, a rich aromatic, potato and kale soup that set us up for the rest of the meal. Then came the Bulhao Pato Clam, littlenecks in a succulent cilantro white wine sauce. Then the Polvo Com Batats, likely the best octopus we ever had. The potato bed was the perfect accompaniment to perfectly grilled octopus and the finishing salsa Verde took this dish over the top. The Croquetas de Bacalhau weaved the potato and cod into a mouth watering delight. Finally we had the Bife a Portuguesa, a tender piece of hanger steak topped with fried egg that was the perfect end to this great meal. ... Oh, by the way, we took a couple of their Pasteis de Nata back with us for a mid-afternoon snack. As good as it gets.

Oporto is my new favorite and their drinks are so good!

By Elianderson21 |

We have been to Oporto a few times. Great for a date, happy hour, or friends. Tips on what to order: sangria!!!!! I always get a carafe of white sangria. Order the crab avocado crostini for sure and the hanger steak is amazing. We tried the squid fried rice and it was a little to strange for us! But small plates so it's fun to order a few and everyone share. It's upscale and trendy but not stuffy!

Great tapas and wine

By Fran Z |

We came to celebrate a birthday. We ordered multiple meat, fish and Curry tapas. All were delicious. One of our guests had the clam/ fish soup. Also delicious. The restaurant has a extensive wine list. We opted for the less priced wine Cabernet wine on tap. It was acceptable.

Wonderful evening

By Sidney E |

On Friday night, Oporto was perfect. There's a great bar with plenty of seating and tables to sit and eat tapas. The selection of wines was broad. The food was great. Servings were perfect ... enough to taste and enjoy. We had the batatas (yummy sauces), octopus and empanadas. I'll be back!

Yummy

By GoesToo |

This casual, mid-priced Montrose Portuguese is good for groups, has a bar, and serves delicious food. Portions are large. Service is friendly.

Great Spanish Tapas and Portuguese Petiscos, Uninspired Service and Wine List.

By Pascale-N-S |

From the lively and trendy ambiance with a mix of booths, bars and traditional table seating, to the menu offering a delicious mix tapas, petiscos and starters this restaurant is great for getting together with other couples and friends. While the food was fantastic and fairly authentic (yes I have been to both Spain and Portugal), our waiter was snooty and inattentive to the point of having to ask the hostess to find him for us. The wine list is short, uninspired, and lacking in quality in all varietals. Disappointing. But we'll probably give it another try just 'cos we love tapas and petiscos, we'd like to believe the waiter just had an off day, and we'll most likely stick to beer instead of wine.

Going down hill

By greenetraveller2 |

Invited friends to what we thought was one of our favorite restaurants. Waiter spilled wine all over one guest, ignored us asking for club soda and just asked to wait as he pour the rest of the wine. After making no scene we thought someone would come by to see if things were fine we ordered their signature filet in skewer. Crispy on the outside and raw on the inside, so I guess they have new chefs and wait staff. Beware quality is not common.

Craving for Portuguese food & wine

By AnnaGreen |

After visited Lisbon, I am addicted to Portuguese food, wine and dessert. I was excited to find out Oporto serves Portuguese food so we headed out for a trial. The atmosphere of the restaurant was very inviting. Very friendly service too. Their chicken empanadas, curry seafood, flaming sausage and octopus were outstanding. Paella tasted good but the rice was still soaky. We had authentic Portuguese red wine , it was smooth and the price was very impressing. The only one little disappointment was their pastel de nata. It was nothing close to a pastel de nata. To me, it was a lemon tart. In general, I like this place and will definitely return.

Great Tapas style happy hour

By Doughbuy |

The place is located in mid-town only a convenient 5 to 10 minute drive from Downtown. It's fairly easy to find as long as you pay attention, however, parking can be a bit of a pain. There's limited street parking close by, and on hot days it can be fairly sweltering. There is a parking garage one block away that's an option as well. The place was fairly packed at a 5PM on a Friday, probably because of their very good happy hour menu. We had reservations and were seated very promptly. Atmosphere and decorations were great, maybe a rustic spanish feel with a modern twist? Waiter service was quick and efficient as well. We ordered primarily off the happy hour menu, the beer selection was limited, but there were some good options. We started with the bread which was amazing. There was 2 kinds, one delicious focaccia that disappeared quickly, and one other bread similar to a baguette. Moved onto their poutine, which was good, but a bit on the salty side for me. Also got the tartine which was delicious. We did glance through the main dinner menu, and there were a ton of delicious sounding items, so we will definitely be back.

Delightful dinner at the bar

By WanderingWahoo |

My wife and I decided to have a casual dinner at the bar for my birthday. What a treat! Great bartender / server had great wine recommendations, and the food as always is exotic and wonderful. The crab and avacado appetizer is superb!

*New* Natas Pastry Shop inside Oporto

By aethomso |

Natas is a pop up bakery shop and coffee house located inside Oporto (use the side entrance on Webster St) (free parking on Webster on Sundays). It's open Saturday and Sunday mornings from 8-11am. It has the best pastries I've had in all of Houston. Croissants, ham and cheese croissants, pumpkin donut-like pastries, raspberry and lemon custard filled pastries and more. They serve fair trade coffee and espresso drinks. Service was excellent. Food is delicious. I will be back and bringing friends.

Variety of Portugeuse tapas

By dbinhou7511 |

Finally tried this new place. A variety of Portuguese tapas including several seafood varieties. Plenty of flavors in these dishes. Get there before 6:30 pm for the happy hour specials (and to make sure you get a table). Easy to eat more than you should because you want to taste everything!

It is sad when a good restaurant goes down...

By AlexS101 |

When I visited that place previously, about seven months ago, it had amazing food. Every tapa was a work of creation. It really gave out a feeling of a chef who likes and takes good care of his food. Thus, each dish stroke me with its creativity and unique taste. Therefore, it's no wonder that having a nice day when it's good to enjoy a meal while sitting outdoors we decided to visit that place again. But what a disappointment! The Portuguese Beef (Bife a Portuguesa) which I clearly remember how much we enjoyed during our previous visit had a taste of an old meat with a strange background taste. The Beef Sandwich (HH Prego) had the same type of meat - old, chewy, not tasting good. At least the french fries were good and were served with mayo, the European style. The meat in the Curry Chicken Empanadas had bland taste and also tasted like as if coming from a chicken that did not die from a violent death, but rather from an old age. The Octopus with potatoes (Polvo Com Batatas) was also very bland and not appealing. It clearly seemed that each dish, save for beef sandwich, came with the same potatoes immersed in the same sauce - spicy curry tomatoes where spice overpowers all other flavors. Well, at least sangria was good.

Another Great Dining Experience

By Bill H |

We stopped by Oporto for a celebration and were not disappointed. It's a great Tapas restaurant with ties to Portugal and Spain. Great wines from the region and usually good craft beers to sample. Best of all the prices are reasonable for being on such a trendy area like midtown. My wife had one of the salmon tapas and I had a skirt steak sandwich. As an appetizer we split an order of the delicious deviled eggs. Our visits to Oporto remind us of a delightful trip to Portugal and southern Spain where tapas and great wine are a way of life. Lucy was our server and she was delightful. Attentive. knowledgeable and a great sense of humor. We've never had anything but great service here.

So Flavorful

By awlivezey |

I came to Oporto with a girlfriend to grab food and drinks while we talked over planning our Portugal vacation, perfect ambiance and attention without disrupting from the waiter. I can't believe it's taken me so long to try this place, we shared 4 dishes between the 2 of us and it was plenty of food though we also opted for dessert as a celebration. The seafood curry might've been the favorite, just so warm and subtly spicy with soft pita bread and plenty of seafood inside. The salted cod and potato croquettes were surprisingly good too. The charred veggies with goat cheese are a must, a good variety with perfect char and seasoning. The dates were a little lack luster in comparison to the rest of the food which surprised me, they were still very tasty though and a sweet way to finish if you're not having dessert. We went on Thursday at 7pm and it was not overly crowded, we sat right away. Would give this a shot if you're looking for some flavorful tapas to share.

Top tapas!

By UNool |

As advised by our waiter we hit the tapas/ barsnacks & found a great range of flavours veggie, seafood & meat. The baked peppers are wonderful but watch out for the odd very hot one. Beautiful sardines & fishcakes too. Portugese food offers many influences so try as much as possible (even curries). Our waiter was a little clinical but the rest of the staff were very amiable - the guy on the phone needs to brighten up too.

Great place for a group

By Janel P |

Delicious, varied menu items. Something for everyone! Scallops Farrotto were amazing as was the Oportobello (giant stuffed portobello)... and the Polvo com Batatas (octopus).

Trying out a Portuguese restaurant for lunch the last day of 2015

By Anotherblessing |

The food was good! Service was good! Ambiance was good! Five stars for sure! And because we so enjoyed all three of our dishes and one in particular was just so wonderful, we re-ordered the: CHARRED VEGGIES (V) (GF) ... 10 wood grilled vegetables/ pistachio romesco sauce/ basil seeds/ potato crisps/ aged goat cheese/ chili oil. (Chili oil on the side.) After a bit of a longer-than-necessary wait (the restaurant was barely a fifth full at 3pm,) to our surprise and disappointment, it came as a different dish! The cheese was Brie and there was hardly any of that delicious sauce. Spoke to our waiter who spoke to the chef. The chef admitted they ran put of goat cheese and insisted we were given the same amount of sauce. Period. There was no apology for the substitution, no offer to give us more sauce, no offer to charge us less, nothing! Lack of integrity, lack of graciousness. We did not get ugly. Just know when eating at this establishment one needs to be specific about making them stay true to their menu, an extra effort a customer should not have to do. We give this restaurant three stars due to their lack of integrity and professionalism.

Something for Everyone!!

By Angela R |

This is by far and away one of the best restaurants in Houston for tapas. Trust me, if you haven't tried tapas yet, you're missing out! We tried everything here: various cheeses and meats, the stuffed dates are the stuff of dreams, divine curry empanadas, crab and avocado crostini is just melt-in-your-mouth! We had the scallop farrotto and the cauliflower hash served with it is a favorite! Seriously, try it and go hungry because you won't want to stop eating!!

Great even during a pandemic!

By Houston_Eriol |

Their take out during the pandemic is amazing! Always one of our favorites we decided to venture downtown recently. First, ordering and pickup were like clock work and the most organized of any place I have seen (it warmed the cockles of this engineer's heart!). We ordered, paid and they have a yellow tent you pull up right at your time and they hand you the food. We then drove to a nice area near by for a picnic. Food, as we have always experienced at this place, was excellent and really hit the spot after a week of social distancing. Sitting on the grass, next to the dog and wife, eating great food...hey, pretty darn good considering!

Delicious food & great atmosphere

By Lucy D |

I really enjoyed the experience at Oporto. The atmosphere was bustling in the low lights. Great for date night or getting drinks with a group of friends The food was delicious and flavorful. The scallops on top of risotto was amazing. Definitely give this place a try, make reservations in advance!

Great Happy Hour Treat

By TravelPrincess |

Met up with a friend for Happy Hour and truly enjoyed the drinks, food and service of Oporto. Seating was quick, waiter was attentive and efficient. They have quite a list of happy hour food selections. We ordered the calamari, eggplant caponata and the sausage with the romanesco sauce...all delicious! Will be back for a full meal next time.

Lovely Portuguese food with many veg options

By Ronak S |

I was recommended this place by a friend and it was excellent. The place serves Portuguese and European food. There are plenty of vegetarian and gluten free options here. The interiors are extremely well done. There is plenty of seating, with many tables by the window and seating by the bar too. For food, we ordered the batatas and bruxelas which were tasty, especially the batatas. They also have a special menu for lunch. From that we got the Rolo de Falafel, which come with a side of fries. The falafel wrap was delicious. We also got the basil pesto pizzette. This was enough for the 3 of us. The food was good, the service was also nice. In short, really impressed with the place and would definitely go there again! You'll have to find parking outside the restaurant.

Nice place

By Ricardo Ortiz |

In general the place is fine. We went for lunch. Tried many appetizers and entrees. The Seafood Curry was as good as in any Indian or Thai restaurant. This was confusing as we thought we were having mediterranean food. Anyway, the paella was also good and the Bacalao Croquettes too. The service was ok.

Fantastic

By AndreaDB_12 |

Tried this excellent restaurant on a whim. Great Social hour, sampled omelette, baked goat cheese and a bread with egg sous vide. The bread has a great crust and taste. Rooibos punch was refreshing. Good vibes, good flavors and always enjoy good flavors. Reminds one of Europe!

Not great, not bad

By Anon148John |

The service was very good, but the food was just OK. No reservations accepted for less than 8 people, but, surprisingly, the place was not very busy, especially considering that it was a Friday evening. It was pricey (more than $240 for four people, including just two happy hour carafes of house wine). We will probably try something different next time.

Tapas in Houston

By Walter S |

My family indulged me on my birthday as I was relentlessly looking for tapas. We had spent a month last year traveling through Portugal and Spain where I was in heaven with all the tapas, but never was able to connect with the ephemeral grilled sardines. Oporto had them, they were just what I was looking for. We also enjoyed batatas bravas, although a tad bold for our granddaughter. The adults all ordered the seafood curry which was delicious. And the mussels were nice and plump and I must add I drained the bowl for the tomatoe based sauce they were served in.....I almost resorted to licking the bowl but refrained. I thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

Exceptional service and food

By JohnnyK3871 |

Had a business dinner with about 15 people. Service was exceptional and so was the food. The entire team enjoyed the dinner. Definitely would recommend.

Tapas, Caipirinhas and Portugal!

By PPG_MD |

Good ambience, excellent caipirinhas (try maracuja and blackberry/pomegranade) and a wide variety of tapas to enjoy among friends (recommend dates, octopus, scallops and their Portuguese beef)... don't forget about dessert! Will stop by every time I visit Houston!

Great option for small plates

So delicious!

By calgal3 |

My niece works nearby and recommended Oporto. It was our first restaurant in Houston and we loved it! There were 5 of us dining. All were extremely happy with our food selections. I had the steak served with a fried egg on top served over the spiced potatoes - YUM! I asked the waiter for a recommendation on the wine and he was spot on (sorry I never could pronounce the wine!). Sheil was our server and he was gracious, patient, friendly and knowledgeable. That really makes the experience excellent! Highly recommend!

Fabulous Food and Service

By NXW |

We visited the restaurant twice, first for lunch and we returned a few days later for dinner. Both times we received fabulous service - thanks Sean and Marco who were very knowledgable about the menu. The food was fabulous, good plate sizes, and it likely between us we had most of the dishes on offer. BTW the cocktails are yummy too. Highly recommended

Great Brunch at O Porto Midtown

By Bill H |

Have eaten here seal times but this first time for Sunday Brunch. The brunch menu is outstanding and has a little something for everyone. The back it up with their full menu. I just had the best omelette ever with guyere cheese and chopped bacon or ham. Nice cup of fruit and fingering potato on the side. My wife had a brunch size salmon crostini. She loved it, same fruit and potato side. We'll definitely be back for brunch next time we're in town early enough. Great atmosphere and very friendly, competent staff. Great people watching in this very trendy part of town. Extensive wine selection featuring wines from Portugal and Spain. Full bar also.

Amazing

Went here after getting off work early. Good was delicious. I had crab cakes, a salad and a soup. All delicious. Atmosphere inviting, friendly staff.

In the city between lunch and dinner.

By Daniel H |

In Houston between meals. What’s a Gordo to do? If you know the Washington Blvd area, you know the kids are still sleeping in from partying all night. My love and I are starving at 3pm, nothing opens until 5PM, what’s is wrong with these people? Ok we found Oporto on W Gray. Thank goodness I though my life was almost over. We ordered the crab & avocado crostini, croquetas de bacalhua, and curry chicken empanadas, all bar snacks. We also had their sangria. We had enough room for dessert1. My love got the bolo de Bolacha served with a scoop of basil, which is rich basil infused custard and candied basil. Well, stay hungry amigos. El Gordo!

Pleasing food in a city setting

By Michiel T |

The decor is is a modern city setting, clean and homy. There were plenty of folks to make it feel a place to be. Despite the crowd the service is quick and spot on, no errors. The food is different in a positive way. We were there with a group, all having different main courses, and everyone was happy with the taste and size. The wine, drinks, the appetizers and deserts all tasted well. Folks who have lived in Portugal were back there....!

A good place

By mserant |

I've been here twice; once for lunch and last night for dinner. I give it 5 stars because of the overall experience. The food is good but not exceptional. For instance the baked oysters were more bread crumbs than oysters. The place is beautiful, the wine delicious and you get to enjoy lots of small plates and appetizers for a reasonable cost. Last night there were 3 of us; 6 shared plates, 3 glasses of wine and the total was $110.00. The menu is quite extensive so many interesting selections to choose from.

Good selection of quality foods and drink, a little too pricy, though

By Erin_leigh79 |

Went with our friends on a Thursday night. It wasn't too crowded at 7pm when we arrived (I think we had a reservation anyway). Tried a couple of different dishes, all which were good. Drinks were nice, too. My one main complaint about this place is the service was a bit off-putting and snobby. And this is coming from someone who routinely dines in Manhattan, which is about the second snobbiest locale for restaurants just behind Paris! The prices were a bit high, too (again, even compared to Manhattan prices, I felt them to be too high). I wouldn't go back, although I did enjoy it. I compare this restaurant directly to a very similar restaurant chain we have local to us called Barcelona, which is Spanish style tapas. Even the interior of Oporto feels like Barcelona, but the prices are much better at Barcelona, as is the staff. Quality of the food is on par with one another.

European Experience in Houston

By Gwen B |

Went here with 8 family members and had such a wonderful time. We chose many small dishes, 2-3 each, and passed them around. This was a great way to experience many different selections, and was also a good 'bonding' experience for our table. Highly Recommended!

wonderful ambiance and food

By 96skb |

We celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary here earlier this month (wish I would have thought to call ahead for some sort of surprise for my husband). We enjoyed each dish we ordered. The drinks weren't as consistent (didn't care for the floral flavor and small portion of the sangria, couldn't tell the difference between the ports in the flight - they all looked and tasted the same, the beer and glass of wine were good). We were glad to not be let down on such a memorable occasion, as can often happen with heightened expectations. We had: - linguica assada - camaroes piri-piri - bife a portuguesa - watermelon gazpacho - bolo de bolacha - basil ice cream - mango & coconut ice cream (only thing we wouldn't rush to order again) Our server was very nice. Would prefer seats at the bar or more central in the restaurant next time. We will definitely be back!

Triple Treat!

By LATaz |

Wow! We loved this restaurant. Go early though because the generous happy hour is very popular and lasts until 6:30- excellent $5.00 Sangria and Cava as well as cocktails and wine. The staff will allow you to go ahead and get a table if the bar is full and you can order from the happy hour menu as well as the regular menu. My husband and I shared three small plates, all were excellent, and we had plenty of food. We started with the eggplant crostini( 3 generous bread slices topped with eggplant, tiny pieces of red bells, tomato and olives, then topped with excellent feta). Then we had charred veggies(root vegetables) and a fabulous red seafood curry with toasted naan. We asked for another serving of rice and ate every bite of this delicious dish. My husband said there was a party going on in his mouth! We each had 2 glasses of Cava/Sangria and the bill was around $57.00. Our server seemed harried, but he did answer our questions and the food came out flawlessly. He correctly told us to first order 3 small plates and then see if we wanted more. This is our first trip here, but it will not be our last. Great experience!

Casual and fun atmosphere

Authentic Portuguese food. served in small family style portions to share with all. try the varied sliced meats and cheeses. for entrees they have a great grilled chicken. The sangrias are perfect.

Amazing

Very good place for a date night. Great ambient and selection of wines and food. Neither cheap nor expensive. Dinner for 2 with a bottle of wine is around 100 bucks. My and my wifes favorite place..

Interesting Food

By Beverly M |

My daughter treated me to dinner at Oporto for my birthday. The food was great! We shared various Portuguese dishes-Bacalau fritters, mussels, and scallops. They have interesting cocktails. The food and service were excellent. We ate outside on the patio. They don't take reservations and it is very busy.

Lunch Date

By tazman1099 |

Came in for a Friday day-date in the city. Server was very nice, and the place was a bit slow paced, just what we were looking for. Lamb burger was good, at $15. Prego Especial was $20, and a good sampling of Portuguese food.

Small plates BIG flavors

By mcfiddle |

Followed food critic, Alison Cook's recommendation and headed to this fairly new restaurant for happy hour. Upon entering you are greeted with beautiful wood and an open space seating area plus lots of stools around the bar. The interior is gorgeous. The food is delicious-- we had the baked oysters, egg plant crostini, grilled cheese, clams (add a bread basket because the bread is amazing and you'll want it to sop up the juice) and drinks -- nice wine list and a good bartender for mixed drinks. Prices were mid-range for regular menu and very reasonable for the multiple items on the happy hour menu. Plates can feed 2 to 3 people but you will want multiple plates. Delicious.

Really authentic, really good

By Kiyoshi T |

We went to weekend brunch here last month as a party of three. This location of Oporto only recently began offering brunch, apparently, but from our experience we hope they will continue to do so. I tried the Bacalhal a' Bras, a traditional dish with salted cod, eggs and olives, served with a spicy sauce. I have been to Portugal and have to say it tasted very authentic. Brunch cocktails of prosecco flavored with blackberry were delightful, and we were offered a basket of various breads, some plain, some more like cakes, which we enjoyed. The low-key, unfailingly competent service was definitely a contributing factor to our pleasant experience. Based on this one visit I recommend this establishment.

Midtown Guilty Pleasures

By AnnQT |

I had the good fortune to have lunch here last Friday with my sister. My other sister & her husband had been here for dinner & loved it! So, I was given a gift card for my birthday- lucky me! It’s small but decorated well with booths, tables & banquet sitting; also seating at the bar. Patio seating is also available. Opening at 11:00, we were the first in but continued to have people arrive, The menu is Peruvian- but had a plethora of choices- lunch menu, bar bites, and dinner entrees. We started with the lunch serving of cheese, salami, cracker, spicy almonds, chutney, & marinated veggies- it was SO TASTY!!! We decided to split 2 sandwiches because the choices were difficult- salmon on avocado toast and mushroom/goat cheese with arugula- very filling & delish! You have a choice of side salad, fruit, or fries. Dessert wasn’t necessary but we wanted to try some- our choice was an ice cream sandwich—pistachio brioche with chutney spread with 2 scopes of rich chocolate ice cream and sliced strawberries & whipped cream on the side- oh my! Of course we split it; this would be a great place late at night for dessert with coffee or drink! I personally want to come back for happy hour & bar bites- a great neighborhood bar/eatery.

Appetizing hang out spot

By kdnguyen84 |

We went here for a family dinner for my wife's birthday but it has more of a vibe for groups of friends or a date spot. It's hard to go wrong when choosing something to eat since all of the food is good. The portions are adequate for sharing while casually drinking. More for groups of friends and dates but great food and service

Very creative

By wdiepraam |

This was my first visit to this restaurant and it is now one of my favorites. It’s a Portuguese spin on tapas and there are so many choices. We had the sausage, piri piri shrimp, lamb, potatoes, and more. This is some of the best food I’ve had anywhere and I travel a lot! The drinks are equally creative so try a few. The only downside was that it took them 20 minutes to realize we were seated at a table, but otherwise, the service was great

Enjoyed the meal

By Victor C |

This is a trendy and popular eatery in town, specializing in Portuguese food. We were there Monday night and it was packed. The menu was primarily snack type tapas, also popular in Spanish restaurants. Since it was the first time we were there, the six of us sampled nine different tapas,an entree, plus desserts. This is one of the very few places which charge for bread. Tasted dry as if it had been sitting too long. Probably not that popular when you had to pay for it. We also had an octopus tapa, one of the more expensive items in the menu. Was disappointed, small portion and overcooked. As for other tapas, they were from good to outstanding. We particularly like pizza al Resto, lamb meatballs and curry chicken empandas. The entree arroz de Meniscos, which was seafood with tomato rice, was quite good but not worth the price. Has Oporto sangria, good flavor but could not taste much alcohol. Good desserts, nothing unusual. Despite it is a hit and miss situation, we will come back and sample more tapas. May be with a bottle of good Portuguese wine.

Great Food and Drinks

By JadaM |

Culinary at its best. Flounder fish sticks, Crab with Avacado on toast, Pizza, prosciutto wrapped dates (sweet but good). Drinks were awesome. Centrally located, just cant go wrong with this place.

Pleasantly Surprised by Quality and Ambiance

By Stephen L |

Family of six including two grandchildren were seated comfortably with one high chair. We came shortly after 11am on Saturday and received excellent services. The food was just outstanding and the place was not crowded. Two orders of grilled octopus, two orders of scallops over risotto, squid fried rice, seafood curry, croquettes of bacalhao were all fantastic. We've been to Lisbon, and Brazil and the food here is excellent!

Incredible Portuguese meal

By Carole |

I don’t even know where to start…. A friend and I stumbled upon this by accident. The bread with oil and pepper flakes. Incredible. Love that most of these dishes are tapas. I posted the menu because we ordered so much and all the explosions of flavors were incredible!! A shrimp dish DECADENT! The goat cheese with a marinara. , to die for. A chicken dish with a pita and rice , unbelievable. The only thing I wasn’t super crazy about out was the avocado crab crostini. It wasn’t bad , I just didn’t care for it. Am amazing meal, I would definitely go back. Impeccable service. Friendly staff and hostess. Great atmosphere. Bravo!

Amazing!

We went To Oporto Midtown on Sat Jan 26th to celebrate a friend's milestone birthday and were extremely happy with both service and food. We are all vegetarians and then menu accommodated all our needs. The waiter and staff were extremely courteous, food was great and drinks were top notch. The Batatas and Oportobello was spectacular.Highly recommend this place!!!

A little disappointed

By Antonio |

Had heard about this place and thought it was strange and the very last place I would think of finding a Portuguese restaurant in Houston. Atmosphere is nice though I did t see the usual authentic items one would find in a Portuguese restaurant like a flag or the rooster or even the blue wall tiles but hey thought let's give it a try. Had the Portuguese steak with egg, was good with a little spice. Decided to get an espresso nice to see they used a normal small espresso cup and not a mug like many other places. My sweet tooth got the better of me so I had to order the Pastel de Nata, wow was I surprised when they brought out what looked like giant cake...pasteis are normally small but this one was at least 3 times the usually size, now I shouldn't complain as they are my favourite but I would still prefer to see pasteis to look at least like the original ones...at least they tasted good. Good attempt at making Portuguese food but if that's your intention then try to keep it as authentic as possible for us true Portuguese people..

Great ambience

By Shreyansh182 |

The food is pretty good though my vegetarian didn’t blew my mind. Sangria was a letdown. The cheese platter comes with a single cracker so order one for each person or get a Bread basket that comes with a ton of bread.

Not Portuguese!

By Shubadoo |

Totally overrated! We were in town for a few days, first time. At least two friends advised us to try Oporto, partially because one of us is Portuguese and where we live we don’t have Portuguese restaurants. We had dinner on a Tuesday evening. Nice decor, very uncomfortable chairs, decent wine menu, and promising food menu with a combination of Spanish, Portuguese, and Indian flavours. Unfortunately the food was very disappointing. We had Portuguese sausage, patatas bravas, baked octopus, cod croquetes and piri piri chicken wings. Everything was way too greasy and tasted very much the same, at same time very different from the traditional dishes they take the name from. The one exception was the cod croquetes. Not going there again!

Nice Portugal (and Spain) dishes in a warm atmosphere

By Serge B |

Enjoyable dishes (Chourizo / Batatas, Bouillabaisse soup, Sardines, Goat cheese and lamb were all shared by us and greatly enjoyed. The spread of drinks is complete and fabulous (Whiskies, Ports, etc). This was a very pleasant surprise as we passed by Houston downtown! Will absolutely go again as we go to Houston several times a year. The atmosphere is warm, slightly dark and friendly and the staff more than helpful as well, and efficient as well.

Portuguese tapas!

By SandJinLA2011 |

This was our first visit to the relatively new Oporto. Its location is interesting but traffically challenging -- glad there was a valet. The patrons were largely yuppie-age (is that an acceptable term these days?), and the noise level was high. We were a group of four, and had to wait a while for a table -- very busy even on a Thursday night. But once we were seated, everything went well. Service was fine considering the crowd, and the drinks menu was very varied. We all enjoyed our tapas meal very much, sharing all the dishes. The ones we loved most: Cataplano Mussels, Curry Chicken Empanadas, Rocket Salad, Scallop Farrotto, Tomato Crostini. The only thing I probably wouldn't order again was the grilled sardines -- just too overpowering. An interesting place, worth a second visit.

Delicious food and atmosphere!

By Alexandra L |

Went with a group of friends for a late dinner and had a wonderful time! Service and food were great! I had the Charred Veggies and just wow! They were way beyond what I was expecting! They had great flavor and were super filling!

Worth a visit

By Nora Alriyahi |

One of the very few Portuguese restaurants that I enjoyed! The food was delicious. The staff were very helpful and fast. I recommend having everything to share in order to try as much dishes as possible.

Delicious food, prepared differently from the conventional good restaurants

By MikeandWilla |

Oporto is a Portuguese restaurant with a modern vibe. We were a party of 4 and we ordered the Charcuterie platter for a starter. There are 16 different items, hams, sausages and cheeses you can select for the platter. We chose a Serrano ham, smoked salmon, Loukanika sausage and a Portuguese cheese. They were all delicious. Some of us decided to order small plates which included a bean stew with kale, feta and video pasta; grilled sardines, steamed mussels (wife says best mussels she has eaten in the US), grilled scallops on a bed of faro risotto, a spinach & artichoke gratin stuffed in a portobello mushroom. A main course item was the beef tenderloin grilled on skewers with grilled vegetables. Every one of these items was delicious, fresh, well prepared and large servings, even with the small plates. I highly recommend Oporto especially if you eat out a lot and are getting tired of the same old menus than seem to predominate around Houston.

Good Portuguese Restaurant

By EricSD |

My family of 3 lived in Rio for a couple years and Oporto brought back memories of the better restaurants there. The ambiance was very nice and the light smokey smell was great. I chose this restaurant for our family dinner because I was looking for a good octopus dish. I had an amazing octopus pasta dish in Angola West Africa at a Portugese restaurant and its still memorable for how good it was. Well Oporto's Polvo com batatas (octopus and potatoes) was eh, the rest of the dinner was much enjoyed. My teenage daughter loved the Rigatoni Barcelona and the London Curry. They had some nice wine choices at a reasonable price. We went with the servers recommendation and order 2-3 dishes per person to share, which ended up being 7 dishes for the 3 of us plus an appetizer and bread. It was spendy, about $200 before tip. We could barely walk we were so full. We'll be back and order less. My daughter says this is her new favorite restaurant. I'd recommend this restaurant to a friend. Service was excellent.

Upscale Portuguese themed is excellent

By Ciahasher |

I’ve driven by this place many times and never noticed it. Located in midtown, it has both an outside patio area and a large open area inside. They’re doing a good job with Covid protocols so have no concerns about that. The restaurant features all sorts of appetizers, large dishes, etc with a Portuguese/Spanish flair. If you like tapas, you’ll like this place. Excellent service from the staff too. They also have a nice bar area too so this would be a good place to grab a drink too. It reminded me a lot of my trip to Portugal last year. I will definitely be going back to this place !

Service Lacking- Decent Food

By Nicole112654 |

We went for brunch this past weekend. It took 25 minutes to get our coffees to the table and when we asked about it the response was "the barista takes a long time' ..... Our meals arrived to the table at the same time the coffee did.Food was flavorful but service made it a bit bitter. Overall, an above average experience but not pleased.

The more people you take...the more food you can try!

By Katie K |

We went here with a group of friends, not to celebrate anything special, but just to celebrate a Friday night, and after calling to make reservations about two days in advance, learned that in order to reserve a table, your party must have a minimum of at least six people. We were surprised, but turnover rates at the tables seemed pretty reasonable at the smaller tables around us, so don't let that be your dealbreaker. The sangria stood out to me on the drink menu, and the while the white sangria was good, after one glass I was ready to switch to red wine. The wine menu has some interesting, unique options, so we ventured out of our Pinot Noir box and tried something new - and were not disappointed! The Food menu has sooooo many dishes to choose from I don't know how you could NOT find something you liked. Out of the appetizer section, our group loved the baked goat cheese (queso de cabra). It was a huge portion - one order was enough for six adults, but I do recommend ordering the daily bread to go along with it. As far as vegetable dishes go, the smashed potatoes (batatas) were way too greasy, and the charred veggies were definitely more burnt than 'charred'....but the pistachio romesco sauce that came with the charred veggies made up for the poor cooking because it was just that delicious. Overall, we were not too impressed with the vegetable items, and really wished there was a bigger variety of vegetable dishes to choose from that focused more on fresh, seasonal produce. Out of the seafood dishes, we liked the octopus the best because it was cooked perfectly, and was served with a fresh salsa verde that gave the meal that fresh kick we were looking for. The scallops had good flavor, but were slightly undercooked, and the shrimp were big and well-cooked, but lacked a salty element. The meat dishes were all well-liked, but one stood out from all the rest - the meatballs (so good our group had to order a second round). Made out of lamb and beef, and full of unique portuguese flavors, they are a must-try dish. The chicken and hangar steak were also good, but definitely sat in the shadow of the all-mighty meatball. The dessert menu had some interesting choices (wished there were more options that erred on the simpler side since our meal was so packed with flavor), but after settling on the tiramisu-like dessert and chocolate espresso torte, we thought the tiramisu was the best. Overall, Opporto is unique, fun, and a great place to try with friends! Just make sure you get the baked goat cheese and the meatballs, and you can't go wrong. Cheers!

NYE Dinner

By Andrew B |

We enjoyed a phenomenal New Years Eve Dinner at Oporto. Each dish came out the perfect time. Each dish was unique. We had the best time. Our waiter was also very helpful in discussing each of the menu items and meeting the needs of a larger group. Would like to go back next time we are in Houston!

Order the eight-armed cephalopod mollusks!

By Kimberly |

Two couples visiting from Atlanta for Super Bowl Weekend & happened upon this date-worthy spot Saturday night. Atmosphere was perfect for a date night with the cozy & dimly lit dining room (but just a tad bit loud). Our server was a little on the strange side but got the job done. Everything was good with the exception of the octopus, which was outstanding. Overall, a nice evening.

A Taste of Portugal

By Philsgreat |

Great place to have a nice romantic evening with your lover. I visited during evening hours, but judging from the atmosphere would make for a cool brunch-time spot with friends. It has a full bar and open layout concept. They even let you see the chef's in action. Service is punctual and the wine selection is superb + the atmosphere + the evening time ambiance = winning A minor down side is that the meals are a bit pricey for the amount of food you get, though its portioned out small on purpose to encourage sharing with others at the table. If you're on a budget looking to eat to your heart is pleased, this is not the place to dine. Overall though, this is a wonderful restaurant. Will definitely go again

A Trip to Portugal while in Houston

By Paul B |

Beautiful ambience near the Heights. Very comfortable interior with outstanding service. Sunday brunch menu very reasonable with 5 offerings of wine on tap plus a nice wine list. We had the Albariño which was clean and crisp and went well with the foods. I had the open faced sandwich of mushrooms and goat cheese with garlic. My wife had the falafel wrap. Nice complimentary brunch breads. A very pleasant experience.

Fun tapas

By sam |

Food and ambience are very pleasing. We tried a bunch of tapas and my favorite were the grilled chorizo and the shrimp and chorizo pao. The white wine sangria is the best I have ever had! My only disappointment was the nata dessert (small cream pies popular in Portugal). they are way too big and too full of custard for my taste- I prefer the traditional kind. But that maybe is a matter of personal preference.

Interesting Food, but LOUD!

By CB P |

The food is good and there is an interesting selection. We were in a large group, so the waiter told us that he couldn't control when the dishes we ordered would come out. He was right. All my dishes came out at once. Once I finished eating I had to sit there and look at dirty dishes. They were never cleared away. This is not a restaurant for people who have a hard time hearing or want a quiet dining experience. It is also not a good place for those who have a hard time seeing in poor lighting.

Tasty Food, Lovely Ambiance, Great Service

By Cathleen Q |

I went for dinner on a Saturday night and we were able to get a seat on the patio without waiting. We were freezing inside so we found the patio temperature rather pleasant at 8:30 PM. It was nice and quiet too. We ordered the hummus and a couple of tapas to share. I liked that the hummus came with veggies and bread so you have a choice. The portions were generous and quite tasty. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and the ingredients which I appreciated. I liked that they had several gluten free options highlighted on the menu. The only thing I would note is that I think a vegan would be quite challenged to find something to eat here. We will be going back to try some of the other seafood tapas, we will just make sure not to chose this restaurant when we are with vegan friends.

Food is good but coffee is very bitter

By lute174 |

I like the food Taste good and has good variety Avoid the coffee it’s very bitter I wish a has been I had been told before ordering a double than after expressing my opinion of the coffee the waiter agreed It’s just the way it is Avoid the expresso

Good bacalhau com natas and large portions

By Renato M |

We were a group of 10 on a Saturday evening. We chose there because we had an escape adventure next door afterwards. I'm from Brazil and lived in Angola, where Portuguese cuisine is very traditional. We ordered a plate of 3 cheeses as an appetizer, and a soup bowl to share with my wife. We had the impression that their dishes were smallish, but the portions were a good size. I had the bacalhau com natas and I'd give it a 7 - good, but not as good as I've had. Needs more bacalhau. My wife had the steak with an egg on top. This was really good! We had a Portuguese sparkling wine which we recommend as well. The service was quick and attentive despite the restaurant being quite full. We'll be back!

Small plates, Portuguese wines

By Gabriel H |

Oporto is located at the entrance to midtown Houston, in a relatively new building. The physical facility is modern, light, airy and cozy, with lots of wood paneling, nice, new wooden furniture and modern art on the walls. it has a full bar and indoor/outdoor tables. The focus is clearly on small plates: there is a wide variety of foods, heavily weighted towards Portuguese and Spanish cuisine (think tapas!). The flavors are well balanced, with some Middle-Eastern and South Asian influence in some of them. The curried chicken empanadas are delightful, as are the cod croquettes. The chrcuterie and cheese plates are quite flexible and the choices are quite attractive. The Oporto Tiramisu is actually quite delicious; the chocolate chip bread pudding is totally killed by the chocolate, so don't bother ordering it. Coffee is delicious. Oporto offers several dozen wines by the glass and at a very reasonable price. There are a few parking spots on a side street and a parking garage half a block away. While there is valet parking, I believe it only exists in the evening.

Great tapas bar, great service

By Eexplorer-P |

We have been going for some time to Oporto. It is truly a great pleasure to dine at this place. The variety and quality of the food is outstanding. There is not a single dish that we do not like. The service is exceptional. Wonderful and not expensive wine list. All I can say is just go there and you will not regret.

Great new Portuguese restaurant, downtown

By prm78 |

As a regular in Oporto wine bar, I was excited to see the owner opening this new location downtown. Location is great, on a corner in a newly developing area of downtown: beautifully decorated inside, and with an outside dining area also. (And plenty of bar seating, great for those dining alone.) There is a wider menu than Oporto, with the great classics (eg, bacahlao a bras, caldo verde), but with (for me at least) some great additions - camarao piri piri, cataplana mussels, oyster bar, etc. And of course, vinho verde! Staff are helpful and pleasant, clearly pleased to show off this new restaurant.

A feast of flavors

By Jessica M |

Amazing food. Think a Portuguese Tapas bar. Most main dishes $12-16. Bring friends to share. I recommend the scallops and mussels.

Will Become a Regular on our Rounds

By HstnTrvlr |

We used to frequent Oporto at a previous location & had forgotten all about it. What a colossal mistake that has been. The food is delicious & well presented, the cocktails are really something to write home about, & the service was attentive & informative. The space is well & efficiently laid out. Parking is easy (in the garage just a few meters down the street).

Few restaurants capture my heart, but Oporto is one of those few.

By Karen V |

We enjoyed a cozy family gathering...sharing of spirits+tapas dishes on the patio. Everything was perfect...the wait staff was patient, knowledgeable and friendly...the tapas were delicious, plentiful and varied. We ordered several rounds of tapas throughout the evening. The waiter was kind enough to check back with us every so often even though the restaurant was quite busy. My only complaints would be that the lighting inside the restaurant was a bit glaring and the acoustics a bit too noisy for easy conversation. This made the patio a great choice for a calmer and more relaxed setting.

Great happy hour

By cerulean64 |

Met a good friend here for happy hour last week. The food was excellent, and so was her caipiroska. We started with the caprese salad and the baked goat cheese - scrumptious! We also split the hanger steak sandwich with French fries which both had great flavor. I ordered too much food because when the lamb meatballs and the chicken curry empanadas arrived, we were already stuffed. These 2 weren't my favorite, but if I hadn't been so full already, I'm sure I would have enjoyed them more. The place had a great atmosphere so get there before 630 to order off the happy hour menu and stay as long as you like.

A Wonderful Portuguese Tapas Bar

By Wayne B |

If you get a chance, a most delightful restaurant to try is oPorto in Midtown (Houston), a Portuguese tapas bar. Just walking in and smelling the wood burning oven is good enough but the service and ambiance are fabulous too. Relaxed and laid back. Here's my most recent recommendations: QUEIJO DE CABRA (V) ... 11 baked goat cheese/ walnuts/ tomato basil POLVO COM BATATAS (GF) ... 16 wood grilled octopus/ mustard seed soffrito/ coriander/ shaak potatoes LAMB RIBS MEDITERRANEO ... 16 smoked/ coriander-fennel crusted/ pomegranate molasses/ white bean & chorizo

Nice Find! Interesting menu!

We were in Portugal last fall and wanted to see how the Houston Portuguese food compared. We had the hummus tapas to start then the grilled octopus and the pork curry. Both mains were great, and the curry was complimented with fresh naan, rice and a cool dill yogurt. We wish the wine list had more Douro reds (Tinto). During our 10 days in Porto and Lisbon we developed a great respect for their wines!

Bad, bad, bad

By Estelle B |

The atmosphere in the restaurant is nice, it’s is big but also very cosy place. However the food was awful. I went there with my boyfriend yesterday night, we ordered the baked oysters, the polvo com batatas (octopus) and the bulhao pato clams. The oysters were not that bad if you remove the salsa verde they put on the top which removes all the taste of the oysters. The octopus tasted burnt (which I believe was probably more from the grill not being cleaned than it actually being burned as the octopus appeared to be perfect from a visual standpoint). Also the clams were basically a cilantro soup and impossible to eat. I really don’t know if they try to hide bad seafood behind too many flavors or if the chef just has bad taste. I lived in Portugal for half a year and this is not the taste you find there. Even if Cilantro is everywhere in Portuguese food, it is always subtle there. This restaurant doesn’t understand that the seasoning of a dish is used to add flavor but doesn’t have to be the only taste of the dish. When I order clams I want to taste clams not only cilantro. The waitress was very sweet she asked several times what we think of the food and was sorry that we didn’t like anything. We finally left the restaurant with a $110 bill for a cheap bottle of wine and 3 awful tapas. We went back home without eating anything. It was my first time there and the last time for sure !!!

Interesting but Disappointing

Good and additional location in trending Midtown Houston for the Oporto eateries. Valet parking. Street parking ver limited in this area. Extraordinarily kind staff in all positions of service. Beautiful architecture and layout. Fantastic variety in the menu from appetizers to desserts. Varied bar selections as well Indoor as well as outdoor dining. We had come for the grilled octopus and it was plentiful and good. I tried the hanger steak with fried egg. Potatoes served with the entrees were greasy and lacked fresh flavors. The dessert was the same. Good but not gratifying or exciting. We were both fascinated but disappointed.

Could improve on prices and service - but food and ambience are on point

On Monday at 5:30 pm, I had a ladies meet-up at Oporto for a group I belong to. We were able to make reservations since we were 12 (I believe you can make online reservations if your group is 6 or more), but there was plenty of seating at that time. Happy Hour ended at 6:30pm, so we got there in time to order appetizers and several drinks from that menu, which was nice (lots of interesting options to choose from). At a recommendation of a friend, I ordered the white sangria for $6 a glass which was very good (she is a regular at the other location). It is served over ice, which was perfect for me. I had hoped to try the baked Brie (another recommendation), but that dish is only available at their other restaurant on Richmond. Instead I got the Queijo de Cabra (goat cheese and crostini dish for $12 on the main menu) and Minho Frito (4 small crispy corn meal cubes for $7 on Happy Hour menu). Both dishes serving sizes were small, came in a marina sauce that tastes a bit like tomato basil soup, and were very good. Fortunately our group was large so we ordered a lot of different dishes and I was able to try a couple other items. One of my favorites was the bread pudding, which I would definitely order for myself next time. There were several other dishes on the happy hour menu that came with large portions, so you may want to ask about that if you’re really hungry and not planning to get a meal. Overall Oporto’s ambience is very nice, they have a great central location on West Gray, and their food is very tasty. The only improvement area would be in the service area — it wasn’t bad, but definitely could be better as it seemed like we were always looking for our waiter (especially in the first hour). Having said that, he did a great job splitting the check among our huge group. My total for two happy hour sangrias and two appetizers was $34 before the 20% automatic gratuity (so total of $40). This seems a little pricey given happy hour prices, small portions, and no actual meal, but then again, it is midtown. If a friend or colleague suggested it again, I would be happy to return. You should definitely give them a try.

One of the best bartenders we have ever had!

By MartyHuntsville |

We arrived at our hotel about 2 o’clock and we’re hungry and looking for something on the lighter side with some cocktails and wine. We found this place on TripAdvisor and it was one of the best meals and cocktails we had!! I never liked naming bartenders or waiters in my reviews because most of the time I feel like they asked for it and they’re trying to get some type of bonus for getting it. But I will have to say that Vic is one of the best waiters and bartenders we’ve ever had! He told us a lot of stories about the menu and about the restaurant and the drinks that they created. We had some excellent wine and the best cocktails we’ve ever had for lunch. We had the hanger steak with potatoes, which was incredible and also the seafood curry, which was just as good, too. It got us off on the right foot in Houston and we had a great time!

Great food, nice area

By HJStockholm |

Oporto has recently opened in the MidTown area of Houston, which is fixed up so nicely on the edge of Downtown with small restaurants and nice apartments. If it's not too hot, you can sit outside, otherwise the inside of Oporto is very nice. You can select several different dishes to share. We selected 3, but some people might want 4. You can always add to your order later. Portobello mushroom dish was wonderful! Nice staff!

Good Portuguese Restaurant

By Fabio Corbellini |

We have been looking for a Portuguese restaurant in Houston for a while and now we found. The restaurant is not 100% Portuguese because it has other influences in the dishes making the experience a little bit different. It was good to try the “crockete de bacalhau” (bolinho de bacalhau) and we asked the Francesinha (big sandwich with beef, ham, sausage, egg and cheese) and a rice with squid. The plates were good even though as I said before they are not 100% Portuguese taste. The only issue was that the building where the restaurant is located was testing the alarm system every 5 min so the alarm in the restaurant was ringing every time which made anot so good place to be and damage the whole experience.

Amazing Brunch and Bread Basket

By marymorr |

Amazing Brunch with lots of great choices. The Bloody Mary was a vision to behold and taste. Gin and Tonic was innovative and tasty. Large Range of dishes enjoyed by our group including their house specialty empanadas, soups, salad and egg sandwiche. But the highlight was the bread basket.

Pleasant visit

We enjoyed the Happy hour menu with a delicious wine from Spain. Our waiter, Son was really a helpful guy that I wanted to give a shout out.. This is strictly an Adult only experience which made it really nice and quiet. Food was good.

Knowledgeable staff

We enjoyed our meal here before going to a performance at the Hobby Center. We selected from the happy hour menu and found the portions ample for dinner. Our waiter was knowledgeable and helpful in describing the options. Great wine selection.

Most excellent Tapas

By Kyllito |

Oporto has a wonderfully extensive menu. Who knew there we so many exquisite Portuguese food treats? Seems like some of these had a bit of Indian influence. All of our food was so good....lamb meatballs, mussels (get extra bread to dip into the potlicker), stuffed peppers, scallops with risotto. Our server was excellent as well. He even remembered the other members in our group that dined several months ago. He had great food suggestions. I would have give Oporto five stars if their drinks were better. The different offerings were great but I didn't get the slightest buzz whatsoever. Please don't tell me you're going to be one of these restaurants that charges a lot for drinks and makes them weak. You're better than that. I would still go back here again and get wine or beer with my delicious food.

Really good food

By Nancy C |

Excellent food but too much service. The well-meaning host/manager asked us if everything was ok, almost every time he passed our table. We never had a complaint or any reason for so much inquisition, and after the 5th or 6th time I stopped looking up to answer, while my helpful companion would reply diligently. But it went on and on, time and again, way beyond the norms of decency. This uncomfortable exchange almost overshadowed the excellent food.

Lovely dining experience

By jimminycric |

I have now been to this location on West Gray three times, experiencing excellent service, good food and wine at both Saturday lunch and weekday dinner. Love the many different small plates (in particular Polvo Com Batata, Charred Veggies and Pork Vindalho); the Avocado and Salmon Tartine open-face sandwich on the Lunch Additions menu is delightful too. The Bacalhau a' Bras with linguica is very filling...must be the potatoes. This restaurant emphasizes Portuguese food and wine. It is an upscale restaurant, but not stiff; "nice" casual dress. Lovely experience. I will return many times.

Don’t let this place define Portuguese Food for you!

By Paula C |

The food was awful. The tomato sauce for the goat cheese plate tasted like it was out of the can and it was cold. The Bacalhau A Gomes De Sa was extremely salty beyond what is normally associated with the dish and for some reason contained Portuguese sausage. Why? Ruins the dish. The fusions were a disappointment because they did not accentuate the taste of the ingredients for which Portuguese food is well-known. I wanted to try a dessert and the waiter told me straight out, the customers who have come here and are Portuguese hated our pastel de nata, you might want to try something else. Good call! The sad part is that people who have never tried Portuguese food are going to this restaurant, being disappointed and then thinking they do not like Portuguese food. No folks! You don’t like the food made at this restaurant. I promise you - you will never regret Portuguese food.

Great service, even better food!

By Andrew-Warren |

A fantastic meal. First, the service was some of the best I’ve ever had. Our waitress was busy, but knowledgeable, friendly, offered great advice, and was confident. We felt great in her hands. The food was so great. There’s a reason they’re famous for their octopus. I think we ordered 5-6 plates, which was perfect for us to share. Everything we tasted was delicious and rich. We can’t wait to go back. A great anniversary dinner.

Dedication that shows in every bite!

By jscottmac |

First of all, Yes I have dined in Lisbon, Portugal on multiple occasions, and yes this is about as authentic as you will get without being in Lisbon. In Houston's mid-town area, you have lot's of choices but Oporto is a must. The space is bright and airy, and the service is crisp, and fun but still professional. The dedication to detail is apparent in every facet of each menu item we tried. Shishito peppers and baked oysters were immaculate and the Goan Pork Curry and Piri Piri Shrimp made my head spin with the bursts of fresh, clean, pure flavors! The wine list was precisely designed showing a nice international selection and great selection from Portugal and Spain. We had the Vall Llach Porrera Vi de Vila Priorat v12 and it was fabulous. Man, you gotta get some here!

We had a really great meal here, it is tapas to share but the portions are quite large so don't order too many, you can always order more!! Really nice place!

Time for a Caipirinha...

By MarkSaysMore |

This restaurant was recommended by a gentlemen I met at the Four Seasons Hotel. I was meeting with a dear friend I hadn’t seen in almost five years for a late lunch. It was about a six minute Uber ride from my hotel and we received a warm welcome upon arrival. The service was splendid and I’d recommend chooses several small dishes and just sharing. It gets busy after five and the happy hour drinks and vibrant atmosphere will make you lose all track of time. Just marvelous! I wish I’d taken a photo...

Oporto

By TerrasTravels |

This place had amazing lamb ribs! Omg so yum! Scallops were great too! The recommendations I was given were great except for the dessert cocktail was a little much for me. The Carajillo. Caipirinha was okay. I’ve also had them in Brazil. I’ll stick to my normal wine next time. Friend had rocket salad she loved, bbq chicken she said was too spicy, and her ice cream was supposed to come with chocolate shavings, which there were none… but the service was excellent! He knew the menu well! It’s a cute place I just wish there was more free parking around that area. Wish there were more booth style tables instead of the hard chairs. I would definitely go here again though.

Delicious

By houstontravelingfool |

Four of us went for happy hour to try their small plates before we go to Portugal this summer. Everything we had was delicious. Not a miss in the bunch. Then we had bread pudding and a Portuguese tiramisu for dessert and both exceeded our expectations. Service was very good and prices reasonable. Their patio was lovely and the place was packed. Can’t wait to go back to try more things.

Dinner Date

Enjoyed this experience and they have a lot more to offer than their location on Richmond. Its still a tappas type restaurant but has full menu. The flat iron steak was really good, the wine was perfect. No pressure on ordering as I was talking with my date, all with a great atmosphere, the ambiance was welcoming and very traditional to a European type restaurant. I would definitely return this location.
