We happened upon what seemed like a hole in the wall as we were dragging our tired hungry kids along the riverwalk. Google maps found us this place nearby. We had no idea it was one of the most famous restaurants in San Antonio! Good food. We had cheese enchiladas, queso and the kids had cheese quesadillas. No refills on chips and salsa as per their menu but service was quick when we went so we didn’t need one. Loved their sign that read: Jesus Texas Tacos. They have their priorities in order. :) great visit, sweet waitress, good service. So blessed we ended up here. God sent us to the best little place unbeknownst to us :)

Very modest but big place but with a nice big window view of river at back tables. Great coffee, amazing breakfast all day. I would go back! Mexican breakfasts tho those who love them and pancakes and oatmeal for your friends who don’t!

Down home atmosphere, warm friendly service. Beef enchaladas authenic Tex-Mex. Home made flour tortillas.Good prices with no nonsense service made for a great dining experience .

Basic tasty Mexican food. Attentive service and clean atmosphere. Be advised restaurant has a small parking lot. No beer, wine or alcohol. Dr. Pepper goes great with Carne Asada!

We went to the Medical Center Blanco Cafe for a late Monday lunch looking for good enchiladas. Very disappointed. Had the #1. The enchilada sauce tasted like it was just chili powder and tomato sauce mixed together and the refried beans tasted as if they came from a can. Over priced at $8.50. The fajita meat was just cut up meat. No flavor at all. I do not like spicy or salty foods and they still had no taste. My taco Norteño had a good tortilla and nice cheese but one tiny, thin slice of an under ripe avocado. High prices, small serving, and really bland food (and I normally enjoy bland food). Not sure how they got the title of " best enchiladas in San Antonio". Will not be going back there again ever and cannot recommend this restaurant.

Had a doctor apt in the medical area and just popped over to check and sure enough the dinning room was open for limited seating. Missed the Deluxe Mexican Dinner. Wow it was worth the calories.

I haven't eaten here in >4 years, but I was nearby the Medical Center and swung by for lunch. As in the past, the place was packed. Almost everyone appeared to be regulars and the waitstaff was swamped. I went to an old standard: Two enchiladas, rice, and beans with a crispy beef taco for $9.99. The cheese enchiladas were as good, as ever and the beef taco was filled with lotsa ground beef, lettuce, tomato, and cheese. The Spanish rice had a little kick and adding green salsa to the beans made for a flavorful and filling meal. The plentiful amount of cheese and homemade flour tortillas solidify this restaurant as a Tex-Mex Go-To place. Note: Pre-meal chips and salsa are provided at a cost.

even though this is a franchise of the original Blanco Restaurant on Blanco rd it still taste just like the real place. All of the Blanco Restaurants have the same flavor. We try and meet family when possible, but any trip to the medical area requires a visit to a good place to eat.

I always eat here upon returning to san antonio. Best mexican food place in san antonio. It's always packed with the locals. That says it all.

I've been eating here for years and it never disappoints. The food is always consistently good with the Cheese Enchiladas being the best in San Antonio. This particular location is great if you are traveling in the Medical Center area of town.

Stopped by here for my last meal in San Antonio, and was happy with my choice. The enchiladas were simple cheese, but the chili enchilada sauce they cover them in is amazing, I could eat a bowl of just the sauce it was so good. Was disappointed with the chalupa, it was more like a tostada, and broke in pieces after one bite, but still tasted good. Other standouts were the homemade tortillas, the tortilla chips and salsa and the best horchata l have ever had. The place is very casual, nothing fancy, but comfortable and the service was efficient and friendly. Plus it was only a 5 minute drive from the La Quinta Inn I stayed at. Worth a stop for some TexMex

Been there many times when I'm in the area. The service has always been good and the food is tasty. Love catching up with friends for breakfast there.

This has been a special find for me. In the middle of the San Antonio medical center is this authentic Tex-Mex restaurant that serves top-rated specialties every day but Sundays. Their lunch specials are abundant, well seasoned and proportions are plentiful. I have eaten with work buddies as well as my wife and have never had a bad nor questionable meal! Everything they serve the do so well! I especially like their fideo with picadillo and beans plate. Takes me back to my own childhood days with Mom dishing up that plate! Mmm, good!

we took my wife's mother out for lunch after a dr appointment to one of the Blanco Restaurants, the one in the medical center. It is always busy but worth the wait. We always get the Deluxe Mexican dinner which comes w/ a cold plate and a hot plate. The cold plate has a taco, we did know we could substitute the taco for a puffy taco for and extra 1.50 which is worth it. Man it really fills u up.

Everything we ordered was good. The chips are thick and perfect for scooping guacamole. The salsa, green salsa and guacamole were delicious. The portions are big so you will probably take leftovers home.

This is the real deal . Excellent food great prices . Nothing fancy just great service and food everything you want , this is a must stop

Okay. Cheese Enchiladas. Big Whoop. I get it. But the Cheese Enchiladas at The Original Blanco Café are the best on the planet. I’ve spent 60 years eating Tex-Mex all over the state. This is the best of the best. And for something different – try the Fideo and ask them to make it spicy. Great food and great service.

This place gets packed for lunch. The parking lot is relatively big, front and back, though gets crowded. They are able to move people in and out very easily. The food is delicious. The brisket and carne guisada tacos are delicious. The flautas are fantastic. You can't go wrong with the mexican food here. Be prepared to wait a bit for service, though they keep it moving.

After seing reviews about the awsome cheese enchiladas, we decided to stop by after a medical center appointment. Didn't dissapoint! Enchiladas, beans rice, tacos were all very fresh and very good! Best Tex-Mex we've found in San Antonio since we moved to the area 2 years ago! Got here at lunch time so parking was a bit of a challenge but only had to wait a few minutes for a table. Service was friendly and prompt. Will be looking foreward to our next medical center appointment to stop here again! Downside...they are only open until 4:00pm!

Always good, always hits the spot. Known for its tasty enchiladas...the hype is real. Great service and the price is right.

I enjoyed the Carne Guisada dinner. While it wasn't the best I ever had, it was good and the portions were bigger than most.

We frequent this site because it's close to hospital area and it's really good. It's been there a while and we are long time customers. The food is tex-mex. love the tortillas they are home made and very tasty. Green chicken enchiladas are great, cheese enchiladas are great too.

You gotta have a pretty good self-image to charge for chips and salsa in a San Antonio Mexican food restaurant. Also, if a patron orders chips and queso for about $5, he better gauge the chip to cheese ratio because the menu specifically states that there will be no chip refills. But they do offer soda refills. hmmmm. Anyway, we got to taste A CHIP and it was best kept under wraps--very hard, thick, and bland, even with guacamole slathered all over it. The cheese enchiladas were delicious, as were the heartily-filled beef tacos. A small portion of tasty borracho beans will leave your taste buds begging for more. The homemade corn tortillas were thick and flavorful. Hot sauce on table was spicy and well-received by everyone at our table except the wimps:) Service was adequate, especially since we visited at lunch hour. Will we return? Probably not, but apparently we're in the minority, since the place has been open for decades and the crowds descend on a daily basis.

Am used to going to the Blanco Cafe on Blanco Rd so decided to try the so called original Blanco Cafe for dinner. Poor service, food cold, tortillas turn hard, had to pay for chips/salsa. Chips were terrible. Nice restaurant inside but will never return. Will stick to location on Blanco Road, small restaurant but great service and hot food.

This is a hidden gem ! Reminds me of family-owned Mexican cafe's in Laredo and Brownsville ... enchiladas -both beef and verdes - and carne asada were all delicious ! Excellent service, and the price is right !!!

Recently stopped in for lunch during a visit to San Antonio. We knew it was going to be good when the place was packed at 3pm! Everything was awesome, especially the enchiladas and you can't beat the prices!

If you want a hot fresh plate of Tex Mex food, this is the place. I usually order the cheese enchiladas with ranchero sauce. It's really pretty easy to get vegetarian. The beans are not drenched in lard. The tortillas are hand made. Ask for a toaster corn tortilla because these can be a bit under cooked. My meat eating friends like the carne guisada tacos and think they are some of the best in town. Tacos are huge here and very well made. Potatoes ranchero with or without cheese is an excellent vegetarian or vegan choice

Stopped by for breakfast Monday and I had forgotten how good there food was. As we were waiting our food we observed all the good looking food being served. Oh yummie. I had a Fideo Loco Bowl first time every and it was very good something different. So check this place out for good eats.

Stopped in here for lunch today. Its been awhile but still the same delicious tacos. Try the Carne guisada or the beef fajitas. Always so good and fast friendly service!

We forget just how good this place is until we try somewhere else, not the same. we stopped in for brunch and man what a great meal. We always get the Deluxe mex dinner w/ a cold plate and a hot plate. A lot of Great food and its still as good as the original Blanco Cafe's. We get spoiled and forget just how good it is till we visit another place, like Alamo Calf. just not the same.

Yes it is a hole in the wall, but this is where the locals gather. Kinda unspoken rule...if fire or police eat there it is gonna be good...and yes they were there. Only tried the breakfast and since it reminded me so much of travels into Mexico proper, we ate there three mornings in a row. Would have been four if they were open on Sunday. Midas (scrabbled eggs with corn chips) amazing. Tacos, $2 each, with choices of refined beans, eggs, cheese, bacon, and other choices. Green and red salsas to choose from. Just plain comfort food goodness.

The sign says they were voted best enchiladas in San Antonio and they weren't kidding. My husband and I were hungry and just stopped in and were very pleased.w both had the mole enchiladas and loved them. The prices were really good and the menu has good variety. Nice neighborhood fell to it.I will be back

After being gone from San Antonio for a couple of months then returning one of the places I always make a point to go eat is good old Blanco cafe. Food and service is always splendid and consistent. Best carne guisada breakfast tacos in town.

The tacos here are huge! But the real star is the chiliqulies plate. Be sure to get a side order of bacon because it is delicious. Service is always great but parking might be a problem sometimes.

While in the Medical Center decided to grab a bite before heading back to Houston. Checked reviews and Original Blanco Cafe has a close location and lots of good comments. Parking was a bit tight, but that is because this place is popular! This place is popular because the food is absolutely amazing! I had the deluxe dinner. Got to try a bean chalupa, crispy beef taco, guacamole, cheese enchiladas, rice & beans with homemade flour tortillas. 2 large plates of food for a very reasonable price. Most important, every bite of every item was delicious! I cannot say enough good about this place!

I suggest going to the Blanco Cafe and trying it yourself. The reviews are all over the place. I prefer a crowded parking lot that means the food is good. I thought the prices were reasonable and the food was really tasty.

Don't come here for the atmosphere, but do come here for the food. In a city filled with weak Tex Mex restaurants, this one shines. The dining room is very plain, but with a friendly atmosphere. The cheese enchiladas were outstanding, some of the best I have had, and very reasonably priced. Located north on Fredericksburg Road, it is way away from the tourist area downtown. Well worth the effort to find it.

What a great place with Awesome food. Breakfast was quick and delicious. Service was nice and prompt, lots of choices for breakfast. A must go to while in the Medical center area.

Amazing Tex-Mex. It may be the best I have ever had. It is not fancy. The plates are not huge, but the food is very, very good. The service was great. I will definitely return.

Parking is a problem, and the place is always crowded. But, the food is good and reliable. The cheese enchiladas are famous, but maybe not the best in town. I wonder when the vote was taken? Good service from courteous servers, and sharing a table with strangers might get you seated more quickly. This place is very near the Medical Center, and will give you a good lunch (just be prepared for parking problems).

While it is a San Antonio Tradition if you have diet restrictions about fried foods this is not the place for you. Everything is fried! It's good down south home cooking at it's finest, but I repeat there isn't anything healthy about it. Very reasonably priced and always good service. I recommend any of the home baked pies for dessert!

When I lived near San Antonio, this place was a requirement once a month! It's the best tex mex, the best enchiladas anywhere. yes, it's that good. Now I live 12 hours away, but still get to town a couple of times a year. Be sure and eat here!

I ordered a beef fajita and chicken fajitas the tacos. Both tacos at generous portions of fajita meat. The tacos were tasty and tender. The Restaurant appeared very clean. And the service was excellent.

This review is from the Fredricksburg location,Most reviews are correct with the enchiladas being very good , rice , beans same as most places. Did not have chips. Enough food we did not need them .I can not see anyone complaining about this restaurant, it is truly a very good basic Tex -Mex style food restaurant , I think it’s all we need ,no need to over complicate it .

It had been much too long since I had visited Blanco Cafe. I was in San Antonio for a long weekend and decided it was time for a visit. While growing up in San Antonio, going to The Blanco Cafe on Blanco road was a frequent treat. It was always the same lunch, excellent creamy cheese enchiladas with rice & refried beans and freshly-made flour tortillas. This time I was staying close to the Fredericksburg road location. I decided to go a little after the busy lunch time crowd on a Friday. I arrived at just after 1 pm and there was a line of 10 people or so. There was a handwritten sign asking customers to be patient and they, like so many restaurants, were very short staffed. I only had to wait about 10 minutes, but I knew it would be worth it! As soon as the waitress came by, I ordered an iced tea and the wonderful enchilada plate with rice & refried beans. The lunch came with 2 fluffy homemade flour tortillas. Despite the fact the restaurant was fairly full & doing a brisk takeout business, my enchilada plate arrived in a relatively short time. As always, the enchiladas were just as I remembered and were excellent. I found myself wiping up the last on the enchilada sauce with the flour tortilla! The kitchen was very quick and service was very good despite the busy lunch crowd! As I write this now a few days later, I’m definitely ready for a return trip!

If your really ready for some great tex mex then eat where the locals eat. This place is still one of the best in San antonio.

My husband and I went to San Antonio to celebrate our 1 year anniversary and this was our very first stop after a long day of flying and layovers. We were both pretty hungry so we got some chips & salsa and we each ordered the Deluxe Mexican Dinner. I seriously could have eaten 6 of those tacos! The beef on them was juicy but not greasy and had great flavor. I also loved the cheese enchiladas and thought they were even better when I mixed a bit of beans with them. I didn't care for the rice but my husband didn't care for the beans so we traded and it worked out well for both of us. Also, neither of us were impressed by the chalupas but probably because we were expecting something along the lines of a puffy taco (we blame taco bell for the misunderstanding, don't judge!). I recommend that you request some of the salsa verde because it has just the right amount of heat and had great flavor. Overall we left with happy bellies and a doggie bag full of midnight munchies for under $30. We'll definitely come back if we're ever in Texas again!

I ate here several times while I was working in San Antonio. Great food, reasonably priced. The atmosphere is a plain type setting, not fast food type, but no frills either. Not a place to take a date to impress her, but a great business lunch! Friendly service and clean. A definite "have to try" when you are in San Antonio!

The setting is simple, always a line to get in but quick to sit. Service is fast, friendly AND accurate. I dare say the food was among the best I've had in a long while and Ill be back for more

I had a pleasant breakfast with friendly waitstaff. My huevos rancheros, refried beans, and potatoes were good, but the tortillas brought it to GREAT! The price was more than reasonable.

Living in San Antonio for many years, I seek out the small family-operated places that provide extra quality at good value. I don't go there for nice atmosphere (but no one should go to Blanco Cafe for nice atmosphere, either). My opinion of Blanco Cafe is twofold: 1) A lot of people who read it was the best place for Mexican food in San Antonio in reviews 30-40 years ago started going there and have continued to do so today without trying other places since then. 2) "Anglos," (of which I am one in contrast to Hispanics) go there because it gives them the idea that they are having good Mexican food without the dishes being too spicy, too strange sounding, too...anything. Any of the branches of Blanco Cafe offer safe, over-priced Tex-Mex food and have had consistency for decades. But they can't compare to my two small local favorites that serve food that seems as if a grandmother is in the kitchen making the flavorful, delicious, special dishes and making handmade corn and flour tortillas with luncheon specials offered daily for $5.99 plus tax including iced tea (Spring, 2016)!

We finished up w/ out medical appointment early so we headed straight to Blanco Calf for early lunch at 11am. The place was already packed from late breakfast. We always get the deluxe mexican dinner. It cost a little more but you get 2 plates, a cold plate and a hot plate. its a lot of food but its the best. No where in SA can you get this Tex-Mex food like this. We use to travel all the way down Blanco Rd close to downtown to visit the original one but they have no parking and its a must to get there at the right time.

no frills but gret tasting food , Too many times in SA tex- mex joints invest their money in cool trendy décor and forget about the food . This place is one to go to for the food . Mostly locals come to this medical center outlet . They have great tasting cheese enchiladas that are spiced just right and they come with all the trimmings , rice and beans and two fresh , home made tortillas . We also tried a taco of carne guisada and that was also a direct hit . Their food is spiced just right so it won't bother you the rest of the day like most places who over spice their food . They offer up a variety of plates and tacos that will satisfy most any one's appetite.

We were recommended this place by the people at our hotel's front desk. As soon as we sat down our drink orders were taken and the staff was friendly. The chips you do have to order separately but only because they are completely homemade from homemade tortillas. Our food must have come out no more than 10-15 minutes after we sat down. My boyfriend noticed their menu had

Seven of us met here for dinner during a conference. We started with chips and salsa/queso. The salsa was nice and spicy and the chips were freshly made. I had the carne guisada, which was very good. The freshly made tortillas were absolutely wonderful. We all enjoyed our meals. Great place!

Well it was close so we headed to Blanco calf. and the meal was great. Ricardo was our waiter and he did a great job w/ all of our orders and they all wanted something different and split from the menu. The entire meal was great. We had not been for a long time and it was worth the visit.

Great preparation and enormous portions of Tex-Mex at its best. I have never been disappointed with any of their menu items. I don't live in San Antonio but when I go there I always plan to eat a breakfast or lunch at Blanco's.

Do you want the plate or not? That's what the waitress asked when I complained about the delay on my single plate of cheese enchiladas. She blamed the cook but most likely forgot to turn in my ticket as others who arrived after me were eating. I ate bc I was starving. Manager had zero power to make concession. Owner on site refused to talk to me.

Hearing about this place from the Hotel Bell hop, we decided to try it cause this is where the Help likes to get the Tacos from, took a brisk Walk to the location which was a bout a mile from our Hotel, The food was amazing I love little hole in the wall spots those always seem to be the best. Wife loved the Tacos and shes knows her Tortillas, and she loved them Breakfast came fast and we where in and out in great time.

Every time I get back to San antonio I can't wait to stop by for my favorite fajitas. This place never disappoints. Their breakfast tacos are the bomb as well.

Was gone for a couple months again with work and this was the second place I stopped for lunch. Always top notch. This is where the locals eat.
Keeping it Real
We went for lunch. I love places like this, no frills or trendy art on the walls, just a basic principle good food at a great price. I had the tacos, Good basic tacos. When you travel a lot for work and go back to the same area it is just comforting that you can get great food consistently. The only thing is that you have to pay for chips and salsa.
