Great dinner with a sweet and sassy staff. The coffee is good, the place is clean, friendly, and the food is very good. I had the Spanish/Mexican Omelette which was awesome...oh and they actually had legit hot sauces on the table..for those like me that love a bit of spice...finally! Loved our waiter. Oh and the Street car station is right out front so it's a nice place to have breakfast and then head off to explore the city.

Great service and food! The staff is so friendly, I love the Burgers, Monte Cristo, Banana pancakes, Chicken fried steak and potato salad! The cakes and brownies are also delightful! The portions are extremely generous and the price points are quite reasonable. Happy to make the trek from the East Bay to enjoy a meal at this iconic restaurant! Love it!

Great space. Food is good and location is great, but real slow service and more attitude than needed from the server. Coffee refills (one only) and no offer of more. A bit pricey for breakfast, even for SF. Sorry

We came here after reading about it online and were not disappointed - the staff were so welcoming and the food was excellent. Good selection of usual diner food, generous portions - the French toast was particularly good. It was great to sit in the window and watch the world go by, listening to the staff and regulars chatting at the counter. If you want a proper diner experience in the Castro, then this is the palace to visit.

This is definitely the best place to take a delicious brunch. Very friendly staff, great food and the music pretty awesome! Recommend!!

Been coming to San Francisco for a while and every time I come to Orphans it’s the same amazing customer experience and food every time. Anyone that needs an excellent little diner for any reason needs to go to Orphans.

Great little diner with a fun atmosphere, but the food is bland. Not a lot of seasoning on any of the food. Life the staff and diner but not the food.

This place is just so friendly, joyous and welcoming. We had a really great time and the staff was superb. We had stake dinner and soup (minestrone) and the food was tasty and very satisfying.

I first visited this lovely place in the late 1980s for a malt at 5am on a Saturday night! Every time I come back to San Francisco I have a ritual of always visiting once and it never disappoints. Friendly service, good, honest and reasonably priced food too. Still highly recommended, almost thirty years after my first visit.

typical diner food. Nice staff, very friendly This is a great place to 'people watch'! The food is average but there is plenty of it!

We sat there last Sunday morning to have breakfast. The diner was so amazingly decorated that we noticed it from outside. We were greeted at the entrance by Mr. Caruso, which has been a wonderful host. The food was amazing and we had the chance to try a real fresh orange juice. Really recommended. Saluti da Milano

Sassy service, great diner breakfast, lovely atmosphere and great location in the Castro. Open 24/7.

This place holds so many memories for me. Late night after club meals with friends, lazy morning meals with my husband, a book and a milkshake on a rainy winter afternoon. The food has always been my favorite kind of solid diner fare; the best pancakes, huge portions, lots of salt, grease, and comfort on every plate. The staff were always part of the experience; the bitter and sarcastic morning servers, the younger, cute, hung-over night servers, and so on. After today, though, I'm not going back. The morning staff have gone from being sharp and funny to just tired and mean. Poor service (orders and bill always messed up), rude and angry (handed him my card to pay, threw it onto the counter and walked off), and hateful (bragged about forcing another employee to quit). This is the third meal in a row he has ruined for me and my guests. I'll be back when he is gone.

A real original New York all day diner. Visited many years ago and have never forgotten this gem of a place. The raw material is the best and when that plate of potatoes, eggs, bacon and sausages arrive you are a mouthful from paradise. So fantastic good; you must try once before you die!!!

As a 24hr diner, you can't do better. Right at the F-line stop, around the corner from the Castro Theater. Fast and friendly, we were amazed at how quickly three people can be. The chef turns out hearty comfort food from a tiny kitchen? How do I know it's tiny? Because you have to pass through it to the one-hole rest room. One more plus, the water doesn't taste of chlorine.

One of the greatest places in the world!! Great food and amazing people. Fun and friendly atmosphere always full of interesting people to talk to and open really late.

We are on holiday and asked around for recommendations and a local said to come here. The staff is SUPER nice (we got some great tips about what to do in town) and the food was delicious too. My only regret is that I had no place for dessert. Can only recommend!!! :)

As the title of this review suggests, this place is one of the few 24 hour places to eat in SF. Menu is diner fare. Can be crowded late at night. Overall, I'm satisfied and would return.

What can I say about this place? What struck me the most was when we walked past the place and it was so fabulously decorated ready for Christmas. Walking round the Castro there are lots of restaurants and eateries; but I quite fancied the authentic American diner experience with a twist. This place didn’t disappoint. Our server (Robbie) was attentive and very friendly - making recommendations and looking after us every which way. The food was really impressive - especially the homemade coleslaw and meatloaf (which i’ve never had in my life). The chips were homecut and served just right and the side salad was fresh and huge...! Great value for money - bottomless soft drinks and for two of us the bill was just shy of $30 which was (in comparison to other SF diners) very reasonable. The decor was outrageous - with giant glittery LED Santa hats and camp decorations all round. This place really impressed and if I return to SF I’ll be returning for sure. Great people, great atmosphere and great food. A triple five stars from me!

This is an institution in San Francisco, it like the old time diners and it's great food for not much money , it's in the heart of the Castro and if you can get a seat in the window to watch the world go by, I had a great Club sandwich which would take a lot of beating. Go have some fun and good food .

I came here with my partner whilst we were visiting San Francisco for a few days towards the end of June 2024. We were in the city celebrating our 20 years of being together and had come to The Castro a few times whilst here. We recognised this place from the TV show and TV movie ‘Looking’ so on our last night we decided to come eat here before going onto the bars in The Castro. The week we were here was the run up to the pride weekend so on this Friday night everyone was in good spirits and the area was busy. We got a seat at the counter and got chatting with who I think was the owner. He was so nice and was genuinely interested in speaking with us, asking if we’d be around for the weekend to enjoy pride. Unfortunately and disappointingly we were going home the next day but he even offered to make sure we had somewhere to stay if we didn’t need to get home and could change our flights. Sadly it just wasn’t an option for us but it was so nice of him to offer. We placed our orders and as we were waiting another guy gave us both a bowl each of what I think was a vegetable stew they had on the go. It was so tasty and also generous of him to give it to us. Our orders arrived the portions were huge so much so we couldn’t finish but we left full. It all was delicious. The place is nice with a really nice vibe to it, we’d return if ever back in S.F. My one and only negative is we don’t think there was a customer toilet so my partner had to go use one in a bar next door but other than that we loved this traditional American diner.

We had a great breakfast here! We just missed the wait and the food was delicious! Great atmosphere!! This is worth a stop!

After 4-year away from San Francisco and the Castro, we returned to Orphan Andy for a visit and it was fantastic. The Patty Melt, done at medium well, was still sinfully rich and tasty, accompanied by ample of French fries. The Big 2 ( 2 eggs, 2 bacon strips, 2 sausages, 2 hotcakes, and a choice of coffee, tea or soda) arrived hot and savory. We also got our favorite waiter, who continued to be conversational, kind and helpful to us and other patrons. This diner is often crowded and people are happy to wait around for a table or settle for an immediate seat/high chair at the long counter. The ambiance is cheerful and lively but still conversationally audible at the table. If we live in San Francisco, we would come here at least once a week. Orphan Andy opens early and closes late in the evening during the week but opens 24-hour on the weekend. Enjoy!

This traditional Castro diner serves breakfast all day, it just happens we were there for breakfast time. The owner was his usual sassy self, with lots of quips and humour before we got seated - and plenty during the meal too. It is a key part of this places charm I had Louisiana hot links and eggs (overhard) with Home Fries and Rye Toast. Louisiana hot links are a spicy sausage like Chorizo in flavour, but a little less dense. My partner opted for Links and eggs (over easy) with Home Fries and White Toast, links being the local name for sausages. We both enjoyed our breakfast in this bustling place and were also glad for the endless coffee that kept being topped up.

My husband and I ate breakfast here. The cafe is quirky and friendly. I believe solo diners can sit at the counter just not in booths. Our server was lovely. I tried the banana choc chip hot cakes, which are huge. I couldn’t eat it all. The food was okay, filled our tummy’s until dinner in the evening.

We are here our first night in SF. The burgers are great. The onion rings are fantastic, maybe the best I have eaten in years. Great service. Very large portions and great value.

I was on the hunt for a diner and happened to find Orphan Andy's. If you're strolling through Castro, this is a great spot to stop. The food was fantastic including the most improbable turkey burger that I have ever heard of: Turkey burger, slice of pineapple, cream cheese, lettuce, tomato, and onion on a bun. Trust me, it's awesome! The restaurant is charming and the staff live up to the atmosphere's impression. Artwork from local artists adorns the walls and the staff always had a smile. I highly recommend stopping in for a drink, a meal, or just to take in the sight of it.

Very friendly service and a great breakfast here. You may need to pick your times though as seating is a little limited. Staff were helpful and talkative. The food didn’t take long to arrive and was good quality.

50's style booths and decor. Great hamburgers and chocolate brownie. Your host Joe loves everyone, but you are his favorite... he's a great host. Enjoy the ambiance, soak up the sights and have a good meal

If you're visiting The Castro, have breakfast at Orphan Andys, its small, quaint and full of lively locals. Food is good.

Went here for breakfast with work colleagues. Service was fast, food was decent, and it was clean. The apple sausages were very good. The pancakes were huge and also good. They had recently decorated for Christmas and the decorations were great - very over the top in a nice way.

I have been here loads of times and never had a bad time. The staff are really approachable and attentive. Service is fast and friendly. The menu covers basically all one could wish for and portions are huge for a reasonable price. Food is not adventurous but tasty and well prepared. Try the malts -delicious!

Sure, the location and ambiance are outstanding, but the food is beyond belief. I was amazed by how tasty it was. Absolutely amazed. Not just a meal but a religious experience. These people are the hardest working crew making magic food, leave a giant tip, they deserve it!

My omelet was well prepared and potatoes were quite good. Portions are substantial. Burger had a good flattop crust. Chili is homemade and has nice texture. Friendly service snd good prices.

I also went out of my way to eat here, after seeing Looking. It's a small comfy place, very strategically located. The servers were friendly and chatty. The food was the usual, large portions and a bit expensive. But hey, it was an experience. Would come back again.

Excellent!! Joyous waiter, diverse experience, great food and drinks, freshly squeezed orange juice was Devine, loved everything about this understated establishment!!

Open every day 24/24 except Christmas. Ambiance is lovely and service is top. I enjoyed a lot and recommend it. Service is quick and food is ok.

We were visiting from London and wanted some straightforward American food. We were slightly concerned that it was in a slightly more touristy area in the Castro but the food was fantastic and the price was reasonable. Great service.

My partner & I wanted to dine in the Castro and stumbled on Orphan Andy's. The staff were nice, very friendly and helpful. It's an old world diner in the American style. Just the type of place we like. Would highly recommend it. The meals were massive. Thanks to all the staff for making our visit worthwhile. My partner had a Philly cheesesteak. It was massive and only $12. The same price as a beer at AT&T park!

Attended here for breakfast and wasn’t disappointed. Owner / waiter (old guy who’s had enough - his words!) a real star. Made us feel welcome. Would recommend for just good home cooked food!

Avoid this place if you care (a little) about what you ingest. Worst food experience in the US, I thought this only happened on that Gordon Ramsay reality show

Went here for dinner whilst in the Castro area. Excellent service throughout from Nancy who was lovely. Food was excellent and portion size was on the large size. Would recommend and return.

Good for both breakfast and dinner, we had tasteful burgers in the evening and a combination of eggs and toasts in the morning, the so-called big 2, all of them very generous portions. Service was very good, very friendly waiters, some in particular.

We sat at the counter eating a leisurely lunch on a busy Sunday afternoon. Food, Pastrami Reuben and Philly Cheese steak sandwiches with all the trimmings, was fine and good value. Wait staff were chatty and entertaining and the whole atmosphere of the place was great. Very relaxing and a place not to miss in Castro. Thanks

Amazingly got a table for four just walking in mid morning. Welcoming, cute quirky ambience. Diner classics well done and huge. Son has egg allergies and the waiter was scrupulous about ingredients (chicken wings are egg and dairy free, and delicious!). Known as a Castro institution, but totally lived up to the hype and did not take their reputation for granted. Highly recommended.

Our waitress was very rude. If she treats others the way we were treated, she needs to be let go. I usually don't recommend this type of action. But I have a feeling this rudeness may have been racially motivated by the waitress. Its the feeling we got.

Jetlagged and hungry we went for the 24 hour diner. We felt welcome from the moment we entered. Bottomless coffee, and great food. Will eat there again. Today.

Went for breakfast on a Thursday and had no problem getting a table even though it is a smaller venue. Service was friendly and food was amply portioned. I like that it was open 24 hours and will keep it in mind for future visits.

Great food and very full servings. The both the omelette and the pancakes that came as sides were delicious.

I am visiting the area from Australia and thought I would try Andy’s. My experience of dining alone is that you are normally put at the bar, however today I felt like sitting in the booth at the window. I noticed a ‘minimum 2 people’ sign at each booth, but thought I would ask if it was OK since the place was not busy. Unfortunately there were no exceptions for me, and they evidently preferred to receive ‘no’ money than ‘some’. I went across the road to Cafe Mystique instead which I enjoyed.

Staff is always friendly, my favorite hearty breakfast when in San Francisco, love the sausage links, no skimping on anything ever here!

Super cute vintage 24/7 diner in the heart of the Castro. Nice staff, cute space. My old school Diner Diet Plate was spot on, but my partner's Fried Chicken was overly sweet - it tasted like a corn dog crossed with chicken and not in a good way. Good jukebox. Worth knowing if you need dead of the night eats!

Since i live with a preexisting condition these days its become a dice throw in picking a good Safe Clean restaurant to eat at . This little hole in the wall Castro eatery is falling back into the same Bad Habits as before . Its always Crowded with people who hang out in the Castro district who dont bother to wash their hands and other parts of their body . I am moving on to a Safer better place now . I realize that this place has high rent to pay but why does it have to jeopardize its customers health . Sorry little restaurant . But you used to have good food at one time here .and friendly staff .

Come hungry at this place as portion sizes are generous. It's the classic diner menu with surprises, like an excellent minestrone soup (get that instead of fries with a burger or meat loaf sandwich and you'll feel way less guilty).

Absolutely fabulous diner restaurant! Staff were wonderfully friendly and welcoming. A great selection of traditional American diner style food on the menu through Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner. We had a bacon cheese burger & a blue cheese burger, cooked to perfection and all very reasonably priced. Would definitely visit again if in town. A bit odd you can only access the restrooms, through the kitchen, but whatever, it didn't spoil our experience! Great central location to The Castro area too. Well worth a visit.

This is perhaps my favorite restaurant in San Francisco. I love the food, the people, the service, in fact everything about it. As a leather Master I love the fact that I can walk my slave in wearing his collar and leash, to say nothing of his loincloth. Me in full leather. Total acceptance.

After having a wonderful experience the first time, I decided to invite some friends to dine with me. The food, the pork chops and eggs were cold, and we waited over an hour to be feed. The staff was a bit short staffed. The presentation of the food was a bit sloppy looking. I would personally recommend anyone to go to Harvey's on block away. The food is better and way cheaper, more variety.

24/7 diner in the heart of the Castro serving comfort food. Decor reflects the neighborhood and its history, going back to before when disco was new. Service has bottomless coffee and dates from before McDonalds taught staff to say "melpew"

Well what can we say Brilliant atmosphere Great service Excellent food if anything it’s too much, we both had steak but truly they were just huge and too much Service was so good and friendly without being intrusive If your in SF please go you’ll love it

Went for lunch and had the French Dip sandwich, co-worker had a Bacon Cheeseburger, both loved it. Nice and homey like atmosphere with amazing food. The waiter was so fun to chat with and prices were great, would def come back here.

We visited for lunch as we were in the Castro district. The diner is quirky and fun with little replica jukeboxes on the tables. We were served iced water as we looked at the menus. We had burgers and ommelettes which were cooked well and tasted good.

Love to go to this place whenever I am in the city. I first went there back in 1996, my first time in San Francisco. This diner has stood for a long time as a staple in the Castro community. The staff is great and the food is delicious. Don't come here is your expecting boutique food. Go there for the experience from one of the neighborhood's oldest places to eat.

Nice little American dinner in the Castro. Great atmosphere, great food, and at a great price. Come here frequently for breakfast. They have wonderful hot cakes!

Typical America dinner, the waiters are kind, friendly and nice. The price and quality are good! The place is particular but at the same time cozy.

After taking the tram to Castro, I alighted and literally found myself in front of Orphan Andy’s. It’s a small, cozy place with booth as well as counter seating. The atmosphere is a throwback to the 50’s-60’s. Heading downstairs to the bathroom requires a short walk through the small kitchen which added to OA’s homey feel. I had a coffee and apple pie while sitting at the counter. The staff were super friendly and most welcoming. I sat and chatted with them for over an hour before heading on my way. It was Halloween eve and they even gave me candy upon my departure!

Visited here whilst in Castro area of San Francisco. A proper traditional American diner with great portion sizes and lovingly prepared food. The food portion sizes are huge too and great value for money. The staff members here were also fantastic and very welcoming. One member of staff even offered to put us up in his flat for Pride weekend when he found out we were leaving just before Pride weekend. We were also given a free bowl vegetable stew whilst waiting for our food to arrive. This was lovely and super kind, just as we found all the people of San Francisco to be. Another bonus to this place is that it is open 24 hours. If you’re in the area, definitely pop in.

Good food. Friendly staff and amazing atmosphere. A great diner. Must check it out. They're open 24/7.

Orphan Andy's is located at the top of Castro Street where it intersects with Market Street. It is conveniently located across from the last/first stop of the F- Market Street Trolley Line and across from the Muni Castro Street Underground Station. We decided to lunch there the day our cruise ship docked unexpectedly due to bad weather in Mexico (long story, short) Orphan Andy's has a unique ambiance and character all its own. The Wait-staff are all excitingly pleasant and the food is excellent, plentiful and affordable. I had a breakfast special and my spouse had a huge sandwich with fries. There is friendly non-stop chatter. Visual scenery both inside and outside walking past. This is an iconic place and a wonderful introduction or conclusion to an afternoon or evening viewing and enjoying the Castro. For you early birds or late nighters, it is open 24/7

Came here after the movies. Pretty quick service and what I liked about this place was that it wasn’t too noisy despite having the classic diner jukebox - it wasn’t set too loud. Burgers are pressed on site, sesame seed buns. Chilli quite good too.

Came here on a week night after walking around Castro to find all of the restaurants and eateries we had researched were closed. This was open, so not wanting to have a wasted trip to Castro and being hungry, we went in. First impressions were OK...it is quirky and colourful, but if you look closely, it is dated and in need of an overhaul. It felt a but grubby. The service is informal...borderline too casual. The food was actually quite decent and portions were generous, though we weren't keen on the fries. Also, the hot chocolate was cold and there were no onion rings. But, what really let it down was the clientele, which, I realise is not necessarily in the control of the owners...but...they did let a very heavily intoxicated and disorientated lady in with a companion sit at the counter. Neither orderd anything. Sadly they sat right by our table. She was tripping out on some sort of drugs and, instead of asking them to leave, they allowed them to stay and...inevitably...she was sick. All over the counter and floor. Absolutely disgusting while we were eating. Again, instead of asking them to leave, they just stayed for what seemed like forever sat with the sick dripping everywhere. Gross. No apology, no nothing. We just sat there totally put off our food and quite desperate to leave. Shame. Perhaps we didn't see it in it's best light. But, what we paid did not match our experience. We wouldn't recommend.

Incredible burgers and shakes. Also a recommended coleslaw. And above all,the super nice and happy waiter that helped us decide. Totally recommended!

Had an omelette there that was STUFFED with onions, mushrooms and bacon. Could only eat half of it. Was served with great home fries with onions and peppers and toast. Great bargain.

Omg! Imagine this... You're traveling a lot during the day, going to rest and after you are woken up, you're so hungry and starving for something tasty, and then you find this perfect diner! That's what happened to us. We were traveling in October. It was a bit cold outside at night and we went to eat to Orphan... Everything was just perfect! The place is so cozy and nice, and the food is really great. The french toast was delicious and so soft...wow! I miss it. Such a great diner!

Gay friendly employees, always with a smile and joking, the place is small, no parking, so you need to walk.

Great diner experience in the Castro area. Lots of food for a great price with a homey atmosphere. Very casual.

Food excellent. Service attentive. Cheap eats and very filling. Burgers, sandwiches, and breakfast 24/7. I make multiple stops here with each visit.

A terrible place to come to with young children . This is a Gay restaurant with some Tacky drugged out customers and their wait staff . Bad service and Drugs sold from behind their counter . Dry overcooked greasy Slop that dominates this Castro eating establishment . The reason why this place gets Loud at night is its in the Crappy Castro District of San Francisco . And we all know this area has a bunch of Loose bars with A bunch of Loose people whose manners are really bad when their Drunk and haven't got any Date that night from the Bars .The old owner wants it that way too .

I’d been looking forward to my visit to Orphan Andy’s and I wasn’t disappointed. I love everything about this place, the decor, the food, the service and the wonderful staff. Highly recommend a visit.

We were just wandering and found Orphan An’s. So glad we did. Great service, welcoming and thoughtful staff. We stayed for dinner and weren’t sorry.

foodwise, you get exactly what you can expect from a diner/greasy spoon like this,The atmosphere was nice though

Orphan Andy's is always reliable. The food is what you would expect from a 24 hour diner, but with its location at Castro and Market this spot has a cast of characters and the staff is always friendly and makes everything just right. I visit San Fran several times a year and always make it a point to have an early morning breakfast here.

Popped in after seeing this on the programme Looking. Had great coffee and awesome desserts, and the guy I believe to be the owner, was beyond friendly, as were all the staff.

This place is in a great location- right at the beginning of the historic street car line. We were there mid afternoon on Monday, July 22.We were told to sit anywhere. The restaurant was about half full. The food was delicious and came in huge portions- good value for the money. We had fish/shrimp and chips and meatloaf. The salads were huge and fresh. We both enjoyed our meals with a special shout out going to the homemade biscuit that accompanies the entrees. We left satisfied with enough leftovers for another meal. There was only 1 waitress working. She was friendly and efficient. It is clear that this is the type of restaurant that values it's regulars. She greeted several diners by name and knew what they were going to order. A big plus is that it is open 24/7 and serves breakfast all day.

Was in SF for a film festival and found this wonderful diner not far from where we were staying. After a late check in we decided to give this place a try. It's located right around the corner from the famous Castro Theatre. This small, well worn and cozy diner was decorated and ready for fun with streamers and beautiful multi colored kites hanging from the inset second floor ceiling and all manner of eclectic fun. Classic old diner with stools at the counter and booths. As you'd expect the locals are just as colorful but the star was a toss up between the most wonderful pancakes and the most wonderful server named Joe! In a world where LGBTQIA people often see the worst in others in terms of intolerance, this place was a loving haven where everyone is welcome, the food is spectacular diner food (especially the pancakes -- yeah, they know the secret to Mom's old fashioned pancakes is the bit of vanilla extract -- that essential flavor many cost-cutting restaurants omit from their pancakes) and if you're lucky enough to get a server named Joe, you'll even get a little genuine love with every pour of coffee. As a straight older couple in the middle of the famous Castro district, we were pleasantly surprised at how welcome we felt. How good was the combination of atmosphere, food and Joe? We literally went back four times! (and made it our last stop before the airport). Just a wonderful friendly place for some really delicious food. Absolutely recommended!

First time eating at this place. Doesn’t look like much from the outside but the food was down home diner style and delicious. The staff was very friendly and service was swift. The staff also made sure to fully use their manners if they needed to slip by you for any reason. A place I will most likely go to again.

I went this morning with my girlfriend to I think was one of the most delicious dinersI ever went too. The waiters welcomed us in and we sat in the front at the counter so we got a chance to interact with the waiters themselves. The food portions were huge bang for your buck and the ORANGE JUICE WAS INSANE!!!! This is a must too if you ever get off of muni station at the Castro or in tn San Francisco. Ever want a delicious meal or a great conversation or two come to Orphan Andy's. (sorry i did't get a picture the food was to delicious)

This little gem is located near the corner of Castrostreet/ Marketstreet and is open 24 hours a day. Every time i am in San Francisco i have most of my meals here. The decor is kitschy but the food is Very good and delicious. From breakfast to dinner. Soups and deserts. You can have breakfast whenever you prefer. They only serve non alcoholic drinks. The majority of customers are from the LGBT community. Sometimes it can be so busy that you have to wait in line to be seated. Especially in the weekends around 2am-3.30am. The staff is very kind and helpful. My favorite person behind the counter is a hispanic guy with glasses. He always called me "papi". He is so good in what he is doing and always in a good mood. Orphan Andy's: A funny name for a diner

I've been coming her for near 20 years now - for breakfast to start the day, or sometimes to end it (it's a 24-hour diner). Always reliably good eats, always reliably interesting crowd. I'll keep coming as long as they stay in business - which I hope is forever.

I was excited to try Orphan Andy's, I thought it was iconic or something?! It was something. Disappointed. Sadly the food was not up to much despite the price - and the waiting staff were really rude - until the tip was due and then they came out with some hilariously trite comments to secure one. It was pretty grimy, dingy and depressing too. Sad, considering I really thought we would have a great experience. Don't bother - sooo many better places to go in the Castro district. Don't waste your money!

The food was amazing here. We had a breakfast amongst friends and were served by a friendly and patient guy that despite us being 5 people, was happy to recommend and clarify orders. Denver omelette with a side of bacon with the most delicious orange juice ever! A definite must do when in The Castro!

Cool place with good diner food - but the entire experience can be ruined by bad service (the older American guy behind the counter is terrible)

Iconic diner, and the decor and s over the top. Singularities include the staff, funny and helpful. The menu has something for everyone, any time of the day or night. Breakfast 24 hours. And such a fun place with good food. Enjoy!

Was the in December 2017. Had a wonderful experience. There were two of us and we got the fried chicken for two. It was so much great food. The staff was great This was a great experience.

Food was great, Excellent service, like the setting , lots of helpful hints on what to see in San Francisco, will be in town 3 more days will be back

Gotta love Orphan Andys...its a great local spot...a little place but good greasy-spoon food and fun service plus good people watching. Its open 24/7 so busy after the bars as well as great for breakfast or anytime you want to grab a burger and some fries or other comfort food.

Nice and couzy diner in Castro, 24 hrs open. Tasty food, generous portions, funny and kind staff. A good choice before exploring the neighbourhood

Even in a sophisticated city like San Francisco, kitchens that stay open into the wee hours are not many. That is why Orphan Andys is my late night cafe if choice, especially if I find myself in the Castro. To step thru the front door is to step Into the 1950s, but not in some arch, self-consciously camp way. This is 1950s no-frills diner that has not been tarted up by someone who religiously reads Architectural Digest. The food is hearty and generous. The tall stacked double cheeseburger looks like it will tumble into the ocean of crisp French Fries if you don't scarf it down quickly. My French Toast stuffed with cream cheese and sliced apples dared me to eat the entire serving. The term "stuffed" fit the diner and the offering in the plate. The staff is friendly and solicitous in the best sense of that term. If you sit at the cozy counter and don't strike up an engaging conversation, it will be you own fault for not smiling and speaking up. I reserve a 5-star rating for restaurants that serve gourmet food. But in terms of the world of retro diners, Orphan Andys is clearly 5-STAR!!

To be fair, this is clearly a place where you go for burgers and sandwiches. I ordered a spicy chicken caesar salad--which I immediately regretted. I got a pile of lettuce with some pieces unseasoned chicken on it--the pile was completely smothered in barbeque sauce with salad dressing dumped on top of that. It was barely edible. The waiter, who started out friendly and helpful, got busy chatting with other clients and we sat for a long time with empty water glasses and no drinks or way to order anything else. Eventually, we had to ask another waiter to ask him for our check. The place is a cute diner, but there are plenty of places for excellent food and service in the Castro. Won't go back to Orphan Andy's!

This is a fun cafe with good food. We had reservations for another place, which was closed, so we stopped at Andy's. We had a brief wait - it's a popular place. The staff is super friendly, attentive and entertaining. The food was good, great breakfast choices. Our group stuck with traditional eggs for breakfast, although we also tried the stuffed French toast which was a decedent treat.

After a long day in SF and the Night Tour at Alcatraz, we called in to Orphan Andy's as it was close by to where we were staying. Great food and great service even at 11.30pm. This place stays open 24/7 Great if you need a meal late at night

smallish, great window seats and engaging service with excellent food. Very popular with locals in addition to tourists. Right in the Castro and well worth a visit. F line tram stops right outside! Quaint, Quirky and Quality.

This spot appears to be hoppin’ around the clock. I stopped in for an omelette around 10:30 am and it was super chill. Spinach and Feta omelet and I was surprised by how much spinach there was...I almost felt healthy. Great service and fun scene. Wish I had tried the French toast. Maybe next time.

This place has a lovely local feel with the staff greeting customers by name and chatting warmly with everyone. The prices are decent and the food comes on the kind of enormous scale that intimidates most Europeans. The food was good, tasty and well cooked, what you’d expect from a Diner-style restaurant. The vibe is fun and friendly and the decoration is kitsch and oozing with all-American diner style. Also the neighbourhood, El Castro, LGBT hub of SF and birthplace of the rainbow flag, is great!

Stopped in at Orphan Andy's for lunch after a day browsing and window shopping in the colorful Castro District. I was greeted with a warm friendly smile by the staff and shown to a booth. The diner should be very familiar to the viewers of HBO's LOOKING as the diner scenes were shot here. I ordered the cheeseburger and potato salad which are both made fresh daily and are both delicious. The cheeseburger was cooked to perfection and came slathered in mayonnaise along with lettuce, tomatoes and onions. Would highly recommend Orphan Andy's where the staff are friendly, polite, prompt and attentive and the food is plentiful and delicious. The locals were greeted by name and light conversation.

San Francisco is not an early rising city, so East Coast Castro visitors need a place to get breakfast before most things are open. I'd recommend Orphan Andy's for a fun diner breakfast served up by some super friendly fellas. This long time establishment really adds character to the neighborhood, with tons of clippings and cartoons on the walls providing a clear sense of the restaurant's history and LGBT roots.

24/7 and the place is never empty. Old time juke box at the booths, a nice big counter and a huge menu. Breakfast Lunch Dinner Snack heaven. Local color.

Was looking for a real American breakfast and we went into here and were not disappointed. The service was great and the waiter was the best.

A lot of foreign visitors ask about the American Diner experience and end up going to corporate chains or places that rest in their laurels like Mel’s Diner. For the mom & pop (or pop & pop) feeling of authentic America, head to the Castro area and drop in at Orphan Andy’s. A neighborhood staple since 1977, these walls hold history. Grab a booth or sidle up to the counter seating. All the American hits are here. Brunch and breakfast served all day, eggs of any variety, and burgers and fries for days. I’m currently hooked on their meatloaf sandwich that hits the spot! The staff and owners are super friendly and happy to hold a conversation. The current owners plan to retire soon but I’m sure the new owners will do their best to preserve the quirky nature of this place. The historic F-Market streetcars pass right out front - and there are plenty of shops to check out along nearby Castro and market Streets.

Will not be back, staff is very rude especially the short Hispanic guy who walks around with a mean mug and inappropriate clothing.

I came back to SF after 11 years and this was the first stop, it had barely changed at all (except that the little jukebox's are now just for decoration which is a shame). The food is great, prices are reasonable for SF (which is an expensive city) and the service is good too, it's right by the Castro if you want to watch the boys go by. I recommend the Chocolate Chip pancakes.

Great space to be in as it is all-American. Love the jukeboxes, love the lighting, love “the vibe” but the food we had was really average fare. There was nothing wrong with my huge side salad with blue cheese dressing or my breaded shrimp and cod with a mountain of fries, but there was nothing great about it either. It was unoriginal, uninspiring but it was fine. My partner enjoyed the minestrone (it smelt great) and really liked his meatloaf with gravy. For me, everything was three-star good. For him, everything was four-star good but as I am writing the review, three it is.

We went here as we wanted to visit the Castro and find a cool diner. This place is 24hr, its full of life and appears to always have a queue for brunch, we were lucky enough just to beat the queue and got a window booth. Are server (owner i think) whose namely I've sadly forgotten was wonderful!!! He was full of stories and genuinely interested in talking to us. We got some free freshly squeezed juice. I had eggs, sausage, potatoes and toast my boyfriend and biscuits and gravy. Massive portions and all done very well. I would highly recommend it in here, i would love to go back.

We randomly walked into Orphan Andy's after a morning tour, and were very impressed. We had no wait time, the service was so awesome. The food was delicious! We had omletts, egg combos, bacon, sausage, pancakes... I would definitely recommend ORPHAN And I would come back to eat again, and again.....

Sure it’s a friendly and eclectic atmosphere but the food is average. One issue I had is that much of the staff didn’t have their nose covered by their mask.

Great diner found by accident in Castro. We tried it for dinner, really good bacon burger. In general there is plenty of choice from the menu. San Francisco average prices.

Great location and and very pleasant decor. The breakfast I had was very good and the service was perfect. I really enjoy the location, very convenient to get to, right in the heart of the Castro. I will go back next time I'm in SF.

What an amazing place, so happy we found this gem. Joe looked after us and served a great breakfast with a chat, lots of good coffee and a smile. The best day to any day; an antidote to grey weather, high taxes and depression

Orphan Andy's is best place to get any meal at reasonable price in San Francisco. Recommend burgers, all breakfasts, cheesecake, pie, everything. Small, informal, local café style.

Great food! The pastrami Rueben was outstanding!! Good burgers and very friendly staff. Would highly recommend. Robbie was so very nice and fun to talk to.

We visited for breakfast and loved the huge stacks of pancakes and delicious omelettes, all freshly made and delicious. A hidden gem.

This place is a fantastic little diner. A real institution in the Castro area. Went for breakfast and superb choice. Their "Big 2" option was brilliant as standard breakfast plus pancakes. Nothing else needed all day - hit the mark perfectly.

My wife and I travelled in to San Fran from Johannesburg, South Africa. Having never been to the US, the entire experience was daunting. We'd also never been to a diner but Orphan Andy's was the best! The food was incredible and the team at Orphan Andy's made us feel at home every visit - and we visited lots. Definitely try the breakfast bagel. A must visit in the Castro!

What a wonderful spot for brunch. Really busy, buzzy and fun. Food usual diner fare but their pancakes were the best I have ever had !

This is an old fashioned hole-in-the-wall diner. It is small with cramped seating at the counter and a few booths. The waitstaff is brusque but friendly. You don’t have to worry about ever having an empty coffee cup. They keep it filled with fresh brewed coffee. The real reason to go is the terrific comfort food. This is not a health food restaurant. They serve delicious diner food. Pork chops (delicious), burgers, breakfasts, etc.. They give large servings so you don’t leave hungry.

Wr had a great breakfast experience here. The diner has a great vibe! Moe and the rest of the staff are friendly and welcoming! I had the French toast stuffed with cream cheese and spiced apples! It was so sweet and delicious. I could barely put my fork down ! My spouse had a hearty breakfast of eggs, bacon and potatoes! The coffee was good too! We definitely recommend this place.

We popped into Orphan Andy’s for a light meal, pot of tea and to rest our feet. I’m very glad we did. Service with a side of great attitude and yummy pancakes. We really enjoyed our time here. Highly recommend for food, people watching and great service.

Great place to have food and drinks - especially after a Saturday night out in the Castro. The atmosphere is interesting and the staff were nice. Certainly not a 5 star with their food, but still pretty good as are their prices.

Stopped in here for breakfast one morning and enjoyed the meal. The server was charmingly cute and informative. The food is delicious.

My son took me to this place for breakfast. It was great. food was very good and plenty of it and the staff were excellent

We happened into Orphan Andy’s at the end of a long day . Food was excellent . Service was friendly & quick ! Go there !!

DISGUSTING, HUMILIATING, AND COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE This was by far one of the worst customer service experiences I have ever had. An employee named Rene behaved in a way that was aggressive, disrespectful, and absolutely unacceptable. He yelled at me loudly in front of other customers, creating a humiliating scene and making the environment hostile and uncomfortable. There is no excuse for this type of behavior—ever. Being shouted at publicly by an employee shows a total lack of professionalism, basic manners, and human decency. Instead of resolving anything, he chose to embarrass a customer and escalate the situation in the worst possible way. What is most alarming is that this behavior seems to be tolerated. If management allows employees like this to interact with customers, it speaks volumes about how this place is run. I left feeling disrespected, shaken, and shocked. I will never return, and I strongly warn others to think twice before coming here. Until this restaurant addresses its serious customer service issues, it does not deserve anyone’s business.

Eggs over easy with ham and potatoes, delicious. Plenty of coffee refills from a delightful member of staff. They went the extra mile to cook my friend’s eggs specifically how he likes them. Ambience was great with what was obviously repeat customers. Great, friendly breakfast in Castro.

Small diner in the Castro neighborhood. Delicious homemade breakfast, lunch, and dinner favorites. Open 24/7. Favorite for the LGBT community. I love the coffee and milk shakes.

This 24/7 diner is the perfect late night/early morning spot to soak up local color!! It’s a staple of the neighborhood!!! Great service and good!!!

I needed to catch a breakfast at night for the next morning. Got the 3 egg spinach, feta omlete with added mushrooms. It was delicious thd next morning. The guy at the counter next yo me ordered the wings. They smelled wonderful, but wings for breakfast wasn't for me. Great place. I travel to SF freq. Will go there again.

Good greasy food in the heart of Castro. Service is pretty good and local. Not to much to say about this restaurant it is your diner of the Castro

This gaudily-appointed, 24-hour establishment became a go-to place for us while we were staying in the Castro neighbourhood. This is partially because it is very close to our holiday rental; because it is open 24 hours a day; and because it is basically what pops into my head when I think "American diner". We tried a number of the usual staples - the club sandwich, the fried chicken and the chilli - all of which were very nice. (A Philly cheesesteak was somewhat less successful.) Do yourself a favour, though, and order the cheeseburger. It was the best cheeseburger I have had so far in America, and beats the offerings at a number of the trendy burger bars in the area. If you are in the Castro, perhaps for a big night out, you may well find Orphan Andy's an oasis for a wee-hours bite before heading home. You could do worse!

Orphan Andy's is an old-fashioned diner with good coffee, very good and filling food (especially the hotcakes), and a nice staff who accommodated my disabled companion very well. Although we went for breakfast, every kind of meal is served. Well-located for our purposes, we saw no reason to look for any other breakfast place. A bit pricey, but this IS San Francisco. Great decor, too.

A party of 4 of us visited for Breakfast. We each had something different. We all enjoyed what we had. Toilet needs addressing unfortunately 😕

Made to feel so welcome, cared for and fed! After 4 days in the US this was the first really excellent customer service we experienced - the tip was for our appreciation not anyone’s expectation. Made the Castro just that extra bit more special. Thanks Joe!

Sometimes you want to go to a really solid diner type restaurant for some comfort food and Orphan Andy's fits that bill perfectly. Really solid breakfast served with a smile in a very tiny restaurant with fun decor. The food isn't something mind-blowing - but it's solid staples and was served quickly.

Great food, and even greater service. Fast service and reasonable prices. BUT for me the attention I get is what make me choose this place . Every time I went either Vite or Robie made sure I was having a good time and were super kind . They are the sweetest, I’ve been going there every day since I arrive at San Francisco a week ago ,I have 8 days more left and planning to eat there each one of them.

Staff very helpful, great burger with homemade potato salad. Drinks refills without having to ask. Highly recommend.

Went here last day in San Fran, wish I'd gone in before. Great staff and food prices ok not cheap. Coffee refills, ordered too much and struggled to finish. Busy at times and people queue to get in. Would recommend as great friendly diner had the breakfast but all food looked good. Definately visit again if in Castro.

As we were visiting from England we really wanted to visit an American diner and this place was perfect, loved the decor. Service was fast, food was tasty and reasonably priced. Would return!

Had a wonder around the Castro district tonight after going to the theatre. Not sure why all the bars were so quiet - maybe because it was San Fran Pride last weekend..... so we ended up trying Orphan Andy’s diner for some midnight feasting! This place isn’t huge - seats about x50/55 I would estimate so we had about a x10 minute wait to be seated. A nice lady server brought some large glasses of iced water over, menus etc. It’s a typically American offering. My partner ordered french toast with cream cheese and weirdly fries with it - maple syrup etc & a hot chocolate with cream. I ordered chicken strips, fries & a soda - which wS re filled for free. The place is open x24 hours and full of locals & tourists. Very colourful ceiling made from rainbow kites and flags. The toilet - you have to go on a mini adventure through the kitchens ! - Food bill came to $40 inc $10 tip. Would like to upload photos but it won’t let me ?!

Very reasonable prices, friendly servers, good quality traditional late night or breakfast diner fare, draws a local crowd, open all hours

We had heard that this place was the place to eat. We were not disappointed! Wonderful, friendly staff and the most amazing food! Everything on the menu looked amazing. Loved this pace!

We were In town for the long weekend and started the evening with a bite at Orphan Andy’s and what a good place to start. The service was top notch and personable not to mention on point. The food was tasty and well done. Robbie was tentative but not overbearing and was helpful even after circling back after a few hours and a few cocktails to help with getting us back to our hotel. Kudos to all of the staff for a great start and end to a fabulous time in the Castro.

Very friendly staff, and had the best apple pie of my life! Excellent ambience. Would go again, with friends or family.

I soo love this place!! This is my favorite place to eat at when I'm in SAN Francisco area. They are open 24 hours and the food is so darn good!! I always order the pork chops and eggs. I love that the food is a large portion, and affordable. And the staff treats you like family, very welcoming. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This place is awesome!!!

A very diverse place to say the least, in the largest and most assertive LGBT neighborhood with its multicolored flags of the USA. Doesn't look much at first glance, very small surface area, stuck in time, service can be a little long, but attractive price and little chance of being hungry when leaving, large menu on the menu.

The inside might attract you but you won’t stay for the food. There’s nothing more to expect than regular bad looking fast food.

Came here on a Thursday morning. The place is really cute and old fashioned. It was quiet and the waiter was really nice. I got the eggs and bacon with the pancakes. The bacon was great but the eggs were a bit bland. Pancakes were delicious. My girlfriend got the feta and spinach omelet with home fries and toast. She said it was great. Our waiter also gave us directions on how to get around.

Yum! This place is so much more than a diner! It is unintentionally a dining experience!! Bottomless coffee always makes me happy so we were off to a good start! We had the French toast with a side of bacon 🥓 it was a huge and delicious portion! I also ordered a spicy sausage meal which came with potato, toast and eggs of my choice! Americans definitely give a lot more options when choosing how you would like your eggs cooked! I went for poached! The sausage was SPICY but delicious! Not for one with a mild disposition! My favourite thing about the diner was the waiters! They were charming, flirtatious, a little cheeky and a lot of fun! You could tell that they really loved what they were doing. We sat at a booth near the window, I could've sat there all day watching the exchanges between staff and customers. The atmosphere was incredible. This is a must visit if you are looking for a casual bite in the Castro district! Thank you for having us!! X

Orphan Andy's is a great place for breakfast. They have an extensive menu of breakfast items - and are very flexible in what ingredients you add to an omelet. The omelets are light and fluffy and include a side of potatoes and toast (or you can opt for fruit or tomatoes in lieu of the toast. Service is friendly - with frequent refills of coffee. Oh, and the orange juice is fresh, not something from a bottle or can.

Stumbled across this place only a few days back.. The food was excellent, if only a little too much for the British stomach to take.. the portions are beyond gigantic! But, the quality and taste is not at all compromised, the food is excellent. That said, the Canadian guys who served us are fabulous. Absolutely fabulous. We had the best service off these guys, compared to all service received in SF. The guys are experts at providing the very best hospitality and it was a pleasure talking and having a laugh with them. Keep up the excellent work, your amazing (food and service)

Great fluffy pancakes, good selection for breakfast and great atmosphere. I really wanted to try the biscuits and gravy...but too much food!

We wanted to try an authentic American diner while on holiday and we are glad we choose here. The food was amazing, the pancakes have been some of the best we had ever had. If we are ever in San Fran again we will definitely come back. The service was friendly and the area was lovely

We stopped by here for some lunch after looking around The Castro area. Had read some good reviews and luckily arrived just in time to bag a booth for the three of us - the place is very small so imagine it isn’t always that easy! We all ordered grilled cheese sandwiches and they did not disappoint - just the kind of over indulgent, greasy food you’d expect and want from a diner! My boyfriend also ordered a milkshake which was enormous! Atmosphere was super cute and quirky, and the service was brilliant, which we have found it always is in California anyway, but our waiter was really helpful and attentive. Would definitely recommend if you’re in the area and you’re hungry!

This is a classic diner that thankfully is open late for any after-bar dining needs. nothing fancy about the food, but the decor is charming and invokes 1950s nostalgia.

I ate my breakfast here almost every day in San Francisco. While I found it a little expensive for what it was it is a nice place. Staff are lovely. toilet is a bit small ( real small )

Awesome little diner in the heart of Castro, great sandwiches and friendly staff. Huge portions. We would eat here again

Open 24 hours for breakfast lunch and dinner, lunch and dinner specials, coffee refills, gets very busy at peak times.
Fun Kitsch in Castro
Nice local diner in the heart of Castro. Good for a decent basic meal and the service is friendly. Décor was a lot of fun.
