THIS MANAGER NEEDS TO GET A CLUE!

By R K |

This review is actually for the 11851 Bandera Road location in San Antonio, TX - not the Broadway location - but TripAdvisor is not finding the Bandera location: My husband & I were coming in late & staying at a near-by hotel. It was during the week, & not a lot of restaurants were open. We saw this place, it looked nice & clean, we love Japanese food, & was open, so we decided to try it without checking reviews. All I can say is never again.... We got in there at 8:50 pm, which was 10 minutes from their closing, so we decided to be courteous & ask for it to-go, to bring it back to the hotel. The prices were on the high side, but with such a nice restaurant, we thought surely the food must be top quality, & plentiful. It smelled good in the bag on the drive to the hotel, but once we got settled in the room & opened it all up, my order was totally incorrect. I was supposed have a dish made with buckwheat noodles, & it was regular noodles, & both meals had hardly any food in the boxes. I was supposed to also have a variety of mixed vegetables & shrimp, but I was lucky to get 4 small shrimp in the noodles, & there was maybe 6 pieces of cut-up veggies in it. Basically it was ramen noodles in soy sauce. Frankly, I could have made the same thing at home for under $2, or received a similar dish with MUCH more food (& more veggies & shrimp, I'm sure) at a Chinese take-out joint, for 1/2 the price. My husband had a tempura dish, that had hardly any food & was totally flavorless. We were HIGHLY disappointed, & still hungry when we were done. We were so annoyed, that we decided to stop by to talk to the manager the next day before we left town. The manager was the same guy that served us the night before, & all he did was "politely" argue with us. He told me that those noodles were THEIR style of buckwheat noodles. When I told him I cook with them @ home, & eat them all the time, so I know my buckwheat, & they were NOT buckwheat, he just argued more. In regard to the lack of food volume in my both our dishes, the lack of flavor in the tempura, & hardly any shrimp or veggies in my meal, he just said "That's the way were prepare it here, sorry you didn't like it. I hope you will try us again sometime in the future" - but yet never offered us a compensation meal, or even a discount off our next meal there... We were very polite with our complaints to him, & when he didn't offer to make good & anyway, & said "he hoped we'd try them again in the future", we politely asked him that from our perspective, what would make us want to come back to your restaurant & spend so much money again, if we were highly dissatisfied with our purchase the first time - ? What makes us believe it will be any better the next time - ? He just looked at us & said "I don't know". We were dumb-founded. Then my husband asked him in a different way, & said "Now, if you were us, would you really want to spend more money here again?". He said "No"! THEN he offered to give us 10% toward our next meal. 10% ??? Seriously? We get that every day in some of the chains as a military discount.... Yeah, right. We WON'T be back.

Daughters Birthday

By Dusty M |

We went at 6pm on a Tuesday. Restaurant was basically empty. Told we could not do the hibachi unless we wanted to wait 45 min to an hour. So no birthday hibachi. They suck!

Delicious and fun hibachi

By tina s |

My first time coming to this restaurant, I did not care for it. We sat in the regular dining part of it and ordered Yaki Udon and a hibachi dinner to the table. For whatever reason, I didn't think it was that great. I was hesitant to go back, but my family was in town visiting and I wanted to take the kids to hibachi and it was the closest hibachi place I could find. This time we sat at the hibachi table and besides ordering some sushi for appetizers, we all ordered hibachi. I ordered a filet mignon hibachi dinner. It was DELICIOUS. Everything tasted so good. The meat was cooked perfect. The veggies and fried rice were awesome. I was SO happy with my meal. Everyone else loved the food too. I'm not sure what happened the first time I went, but I'm so happy I gave it another chance. Also, the hibachi chef was AWESOME.....I've been to hibachi 100 times at so many different restaurants in so many different states so the show gets old, but this chef was entertaining and funny...Even the people at the other hibachi table was watching the show. I highly recommend going there for some great hibachi!

great food and good ambience!

By Carolina M |

Great place for a celebration- good for large groups of family or friends and the waiters and cooks take care to put on a show and make everyone happy.

Good food and a show

By Mary D |

The show is pretty standard Tepanyaki chef humor. The food is good and there is plenty of it. It's priced pretty high, so we save it for a special occasion. The steak is tough if you don't get the filet.

Good Japanese Place

By Laura S |

Good selection of Japanese soups and noodles; popular with military personnel due to its reasonable prices and location close to Fort Sam Houston. Service is friendly and accommodating.

Fuoco e fiamme

By xinajane |

We sat around the hibachi and the chef cooked in front of us doing an amazing show... Involving us.The food was pretty good .. We tasted Viking roll and hibachi shrimp.. And sushi mix.And the quantity of the food was enough to be completely full!!!! We are Italy and we enjoyed a lot.

Not what I expected ... I was surprised

By Traveler |

I’m on business and I was on my way back to my hotel. I am tired and hungry and wanted something different. I see this place and it is pretty full. I think that many people must know what’s going on. I pull in and give it a try. Come to find out there’s a birthday party going on. Surprise! I tell the server that this is my first time here what do you recommend? “Everything, it’s all good “. Really? That’s your recommendation? I’ll try the steak and shrimp with fried rice. The salad and soup came. Salad- no. Soup-yes. I ate it. Server was on the money to keep my soda filled. When the meal came I started in steak bites were ok, shrimp was ok, but wait... it tasted like the steak bites. Fried rice tasted like the steak bites. What? Was everything fried in the same garlic butter together? Check please!

Always great!

This is one of my "usual" places for lunch, so I am a regular customer. Momo is one of the best waitresses they have and she practices great customer service.

Decent Sushi

By Benl32487 |

I did not have tremendous expectations of this restaurant and I can honestly say that it was on par with what someone would expect from a standard sushi restaurant. I was shocked at the price of o-toro (fatty tuna) which came it at a costly $7/piece! I guess I should not have been too surprised because it did say MKT price on the menu however, the piece of fish was definitely not worth the cost. Everything else was decent and the service was standard.

Good food, even better chef!

By strangenurse |

We ate at the hibachi and the food was very good and our chef was VERY entertaining. I had not seen his "routine" before at any of these type restaurants. Would definitely go back!

Japanese Culinary Delight Right Here!

By Rosezdent |

The atmosphere makes one feel as if they are in Japan when they dine here - the savory aromas and delectable food!!! You can't miss this great food! It's a bit of Japan righ here in SA!

A welcome surprise

By Lorrinda K |

The chef was wonderful. The service was great. The food was excellent. We had the chef's combo #2 - scallops, shrimp, and filet mignon. It was a lucky stop on our vacation.

Great food!

By April B |

Another favorite for me and my friends! We've only had lunch but are already planning a dinner trip. Their bento boxes and sushi are the best I've had here in Texas. Atmosphere is relaxing and service is great.

Skipped Cinco de Mayo

By Chadswick |

We enjoyed some Japanese food on the holiday and the place was almost empty while everyone was downtown. The food was very tasty while being prepared by the Japanese/Mexican chef entertainer. Went as a group so the atmosphere was fun.

Best Sushi for the Family Outing

By Jeremy R |

Unlike other sushi places in San Antonio that make it difficult to take kids (because it's too fancy or a little stuck up), Osaka creates the perfect atmosphere for friends and families with kids to eat good quality sushi and allow the kids to be kids at dinner. For special occasions (birthdays) my kids love to eat while the chef cooks on the habachi (especially when they make the fire). As for the sushi, I am big fan of their spicy tuna tar-tar and some of the signature rolls. For the price, you are getting what you pay for.

Sushi

Everything here is great Dragon roll tropical roll etc great service. Happy hour specials !! Miso soup some of the beast Japanese dishes very good also

Lunch visit

By nicole r |

This place is usually empty for lunch. Every time we go which is usually with a party of 5 or more during lunch it always seems so empty. People go!! If you enjoy a good hibachi show or table side Chicken teriyaki, shrimp and steak stop in. They have a large variety of sushi and several dinner items and lunch prices. Do you want a Bento box then go here! If you decide to stop in order yum yum sauce on the side with your entree choice I promise you won't be disappointed unless you hate mayo based condiments. We always have a great time, the only downside is the check process. Every time with a large party it takes forever to split our checks!

Bento box heaven

By Aunttabby |

I take lots of people here and everyone is blissfully happy with their Bento Box. I usually get the crab roll appetizer to share, 6 delicious pieces, and one of the hibachi dishes, steaming hot veggies with your choice of meat with rice and usually have enough left over for lunch the next day. I have been going to Osaka for years and it is always dependable, good food and good service.

Low Profile Japanese in Alamo Heights

By bobemac |

We arrived at this sedate and traditional restaurant just before noon. Our server was friendly and we quickly chose two selections. The Bento box came with teriyaki chicken, steamed rice, a salad, 2 crispy pot stickers, 5 California sushi rolls, sliced ginger, and wasabi. It was very good and filling. The hibachi chicken came cut into small pieces with onions, broccoli, and squash with fried rice. The fried rice was delicious and the chicken was good. There were a lot of veggies. The Osaka soup was a light beef broth with small pieces of green onions and mushrooms that was lacking in taste and texture. This is a quiet place for an early lunch, the only noise came from several staff members laughing loudly. The food is good here but the prices are representative of the location.

Mediocre this cisit

By mrsllucas |

The reason I gave this a 3...I’ve been here 5x. Usually I walk out happy and satisfied. Today, not so much. I wanted to take my husband because I rave about it; now I’m embarrassed. We got the lunch bento boxes. I got shrimp tempura. It was battered. The fried rice was great! The salad and sushi was great! My husband got the sesame chicken. It wasn’t hot. He got steamed rice with curry sauce. The curry sauce wasn’t good. Tasted old and not seasoned. The main reason it’s a 3 is because it took over 40 minutes for us to get our food. It’s lunch time...and others, who arrived after us, got their food about the same time. Shame!

Happy Hour Sushi

By Wendy R |

My favorite sushi place. They offer all the regular sushi with some specialty ones as well. The Happy Hour sushi is the best deal. For groups, they have hibachi grill.

First timer , service was fair and food was good

By 121Tony123 |

First timer from out of town, we had the tempura and teriyaki chicken. Taste was good , presentation I thought was not great. I thought for the amount of patrons at 9 pm that the server seemed slow at refilling drinks etc. I will consider trying them again and will update my review at that time. I see they have two locations so they must be successful.

Excellent sushi rolls!

By Joy B |

We arrived at the restaurant on a Sunday just as they were opening. We ordered the Louisiana roll and the Longhorn roll and both were incredible! The one with crawfish was our very favorite, but both were so good! They don't scrimp on the ingredients! We have been searching for sushi rolls as good as those we were used to eating at Yomato in Tyler, Texas and this place definitely was as good and maybe even better! That is saying a lot! I was disappointed that they did not have crab rangoons or wontons, but the rolls made up for it! We also ordered salads with ginger dressing which was pretty good. They were pretty watery which was a turn off, but it was ok. We ordered a small bowl of fried rice which was also very good. Overall we were very pleased with our meal. I cannot believe a place this good wasn't very busy at lunchtime on a Sunday! People don't know what they are missing! We will definitely be back!

surprisingly good

By TexasBailey |

I was invited to a Birthday lunch here and since I've never eaten Japanese food was a little hesitant to go but was pleasantly surprised to find that the food was really tasty. We were seated behind a grill where our chef displayed his culinary experience by chopping vegetables, meat, chicken, shrimp and mixing the fried rice while we looked and enjoyed his friendly banter . Cooked to tender perfection my steak and chicken served with fried rice and mixed vegetables was delicious! At 14.99 this meal and show was a bargain ...

Had it's moments, but service was garbage

By vladd44 |

We went because my wife had never experienced a hibachi meal. So for her birthday we went with her family. Fortunately we had the table chef who was not totally obnoxious. The same could not be said for the table next to us. Our chef was friendly and entertaining, but not over the top. The meal was cooked properly but a little short of simple seasoning. My daughter had ordered a tuna roll which was supposed to be delivered after the hibachi food was cooked. We had to ask multiple times for both the roll and drink refills. To top it off, my daughter became ill almost immediately after eating half of the roll. On the way home she vomited. She has had tuna rolls before without any issue. I have to wonder if there was not some cross contamination. Consider other options.

Osaka’s finest Hibachi chef

By Liquid114 |

Our experience at Osaka was amazing. Not only for the ambiance and the food, but the amazing service. Coming from up north we have see. Many hibachi shows, but Sergio was one of the most genuinely entertaining and kind chefs we have ever had. You can tell Sergio’s heart is in every move he makes and that’s what makes the experience so nice for the customers. If and when we come back to San Antonio, we will no doubt be coming here. And the food was as good as the entertainment.

Amazing sushi

By Wendy H |

The Double Dragon roll is huge! a meal in itself. ALl sushi looks like work of art. Spicy chicken was very good. Lively atmosphere and great spot for dinner!. Waiter went above and beyond when we had a time crunch getting my son back to base.

Good food---slow service

By Sandy H |

I go this restaurant fairly often because it's near my office and generally, their food is great. Yesterday, however, there were 5 of us and we waited over 30 minutes for our food to be brought to us. We all ordered Bento boxes, which is a menu stand-by. Our waiter knew we were on a "lunch hour" but he said that the "kitchen was backed up". A bit disappointing since there weren't that many people in the restaurant.

Delightful lunch!

By MuffetB |

As several other reviewers have noted, this restaurant is a great find. I had a late lunch here on Saturday. I chose the bento box with katsu chicken. It was served with soup (2 choices); I chose the miso soup. Very good. The bento box itself was attractively presented, with 2 gyoza, 4 piece California roll, white rice, chicken katsu and a small salad with a wonderful dressing. The katsu was great, good coating and like the gyoza, were freshly prepared. Service was excellent. The restaurant's interior is attractive and serene. Bathrooms are spotless! Highly recommend this establishment.

Osaka offers great sushi, atmo, service

By Christian M |

I've been twice with friends, once in a booth and the other at the sushi bar, and greatly enjoyed myself both times. The time at the bar was better, as we chatted up the sushi chef and had a great time. The food has always been very tasty and the service been prompt. While I am no sushi connoisseur, I can safely say the sushi is anything but low rate. I haven't had their hibachi, but I look forward to it.

Super experience!

By Capt_Wyatt |

This place is like the old Benihana of Tokyo. They have exhibition chefs and that is fun to behold. But they also have table dining, which I prefer. Very good sushi and bento boxes. Try it for a business lunch...nice setting.

Nice hibachi and sushi.

By Mbchmom |

Family had hibachi dinner this time. From shrimp, steak, chicken, much, many choices and all done well. Our hibachi chef was timely, well trained, and quite an entertainer and attentive to all at the table. Wines and alcoholic beverages available.

Fresh Food, Great Atmosphere, Great Service

By GayeSekula |

We love Osaka on Broadway! Their sushi is fresh, beautifully presented and delicious. The atmosphere is relaxing and the service has always been perfect. This is one of our favorite restaurants.

Fun and good food

By Ben W |

This place was fun, the food was great, and it's elegant but not over the top. My wife got the Tuna Paradise, which i'm not a big fan of sushi, but it was very good. The presentation was also spot on. I had the chicken teriyaki. I enjoyed the onions in it and the sauce seemed homemade. it wasn't that thick sticky goop you get in a bottle. The table near us were sitting and the Hibachi grills and the chiefs knew what they were doing. it was cool to see even from our table.

Delightful Japanese restaurant in Alamo Heights

By MJ Taray |

Finding this restaurant comes as a pleasant surprise. We like its ambience, service is efficient, and the staff are accommodating. Osaka offers a wide range of sushi rolls to choose from. My husband and I also love the gyoza, ramen, and NY steak with shrimps. Will definitely be back if we return to San Antonio.

My new favorite Japanese restaurant

By Gretchen Ruth |

I love bento boxes, and everything about Osaka's "Kitchen Bento Box" was perfect, as was the miso soup. I ordered the marinated Asian-style BBQ beef and enjoyed it all (sushi, salad, Gyoza, beef, rice) but especially the beef. Servings were plentiful. Nice, quiet atmosphere, convenient parking, reason all prices. Can't wait to go back.

Mediocre at best

By Cathy P |

The service was terrible,,our server was not knowledgeable. An 18% gratuity was added to our check despite new laws. Our server shrugged us off. The food was ok, the sushi was fresh and well made and the grill demonstration was good. Despite this, I will more than likely not be back.

Good service, Good sushi, Good price

By arcodon |

My wife and I ate at the sushi bar right when they opened. The chef was friendly, talkative, experienced, and brought out a new fish when we ordered hamachi sashimi. Both the hamachi (two orders) and the toro were very good. We also ordered two rolls at the happy hour price of $15 which were decent, plus bananas tempura for dessert (excellent). Our bill with beer & hot tea was only $67. The best part, however, was the welcoming attitude and friendliness of the Korean chef. That's what earned 5 stars.

Lunch

By TXDiamondback |

First time visitors and were pleasantly surprised. We both had chicken and it was excellent. We only wished we had less onions and more of the other grilled vegetables. The service was very good. The dining area and restrooms were clean and nicely decorated. The background music was quiet and allowed for pleasant conversation. We will be back regularly.

Lunch was delish!

By Maria R |

This review is for the Bandera location. They have a great lunch menu and for the price you get quite a bit of food. The dinner menu is a lot pricier. The staff is friendly. We have been here a few times and the quality of the food is consistent.

Great Hibachi Experience.

By aaronfmd |

The Hibachi was why we came, as my teenager had never experienced it. It was fun and delicious. Tons of food. We got the Hibachi Chef for 2 A which was chicken, NY steak and shrimp. Everything was cooked perfectly including the steak medium rare. Chef was entertaining and talented. We had sushi starters (teenage boys eat a lot) and we were stuffed. FYI, they only do 1 hibachi seating an hour. Call ahead and work out your arrival time ahead of time. If you just show up, you may have to wait close to an hour to be seated if you want hibachi. Otherwaise you can just order off the menu, but no show. There was only one hibachi chef tonight, so we arrived when we were told and were seated right away.

Yum yum yum!!!!!
