A real gem for steak or seafood!

By Richard T |

What a delicious and delightful meal! We started with the crab cakes. These are special because they are all crab, and no bread crumbs, which I prefer. Perfectly prepared, crispy on the outside, and delectable crab. We then shared the Sea Bass, the Scallops Gratinier, the Box Tomato salad, and the creamed spinach. All were delicious and perfectly prepared. It is great to have a choice of steak or seafood... tonight we wanted to go seafood. Our server, Elias, is very attentive and helpful. The restaurant ambience is always nice, calm and classy. This is a great place for steak or seafood, the food is always consistently good. Highly recommended!

scrumptious

Wow! the seafood appetizer was the best ever-- crab, shrimp, mussels prepared beyond superb. My mouth is watering right now, just thinking of it... Great service too with a San Francisco flair!

Good steak but slow service

By JeffV |

This was my second time here in the past two years. The steaks were good but the service was slower than i remembered. The server came to ask bout drinks then disappeared for about 15 minutes.

New Year's Eve

Great atmosphere, great good and great serve. Eddie the bartender was a real treat. It's not a cheap night out but we went there for New Year's Eve and were very happy.

Osso is Oh So Incredible

By BradlyD |

Went to this wonderful little Steakhouse in was amazed by the outstanding and superb service. Go back to the 1940s Steak House everybody working there is in Black Tie they treat you like you're royalty. I felt like I was Rock Hudson and was treated the same way. Thank OSSO so oh so much

Great food

We had reservations for 7pm on a busy Saturday. We arrive 7:03pm and was greeted by a friendly hostess and sat immediately. We ordered the half shrimp half mussels for apps. It was amazing!! It smelled just as great as it tasted. Our food came, I ordered the Sea Bass which was a little over cooked in my opinion, but still tasted great. My husband ordered the Petite Filet and it was cooked to perfection. Like I said, it was a busy Saturday so our waiter wasn’t as attentive, but enough to keep up happy. We also had the Creme brûlée cheesecake it did not disappoint!

Memorable Dinner on Nob Hill

By Tim M |

On the last ( of three) nights staying in the nearby Fairmont Hotel we enjoyed a beautifully prepared dinner at this Steakhouse. Having done research ( and being “thin” British adults!)...we followed advice and shared one main course between us although we both had beautifully presented green salads as starters. Our one main, quite enough for two, was a 18 oz fillet steak cooked skillet style on the bone and carved into delectable thin melt in the mouth slices. We ordered our meal under the advice of the excellent waiter, a selection of roasted vegetables as a side to that huge fillet. A half bottle of Pino Noir one of our favourites, decanted, was the perfect wine accompaniment Only one of us, me! had just enough room for a desert - a crusted salted caramel cake and as I requested “light” on the expected copious whipped cream. PHEW. Comfort food at it’s wickedest. Coffee brought to a close this 211 US dollar really nice dinner. But note - 211 us dollars for one main two starters and one desert plus two glasses of wine. We expected this so no surprise. The atmosphere early was lovely but as our meal (we’d booked 18.30hrs ) came to its close the place had filled up ( by 20.00hrs) and it was buzzing. The chefs working hard within the see-through glass kitchen. Clearly a restaurant popular with well heeled (!) locals. All very casually dressed so we felt odd in our dressed - for - dinner attire which isn’t necessary these days in 2019!!!!! If you are able to have starters each and steaks or crab each plus drinks and service two people could easily spend 350-500 dollars and upwards here for one dinner. Worth it? Well yes of course it was and we will long remember the tender beef - but in our case - probably not that often unless we inherit a fortune - unlikely though! Great that we could walk back to our room at the Fairmont Hotel just one block away to savour San Francisco at night

Great Deal

This restaurant was a short walk from our hotel and one we would try to visit again if ever in the city. Delicious steak, fun ambience and attentive staff. To top it all off, we thought the prices were very reasonable for Nob Hill.

Yes.

Definitely check this place out, we go at least once a month and can't get the meal out of our heads each time.. service is always on point, the food (mussels, bone in filet, crab legs etc) are fantastic.. make a reservation and go!

Terrible appetizers!

By Edward S |

Went with family for my birthday!First of all there were 4 of us and the booths for 4 were cramped! As soon as I sat down I kept elbowing my wife because we were so close she had to squeeze up against wall to not be in my lap.She is only 110 pounds and I'm only 5,7. We ordered "very expensive "appetizers and here's what we got a small Ceasar salad with to much lemon "c" tuna carpaccio completely drowned in soy sauce you couldn't taste the tuna could have been anything "d" meat potstickers in what tasted like the same soy sauce as the carpaccio "d"and finally the worst crab cocktail I've ever tasted. My dad ordered it who is old and can't see well and said there's some shell in my cocktail.I said really?so he continued eating it and only ate Only a tiny bit and was not going to not eat it so I said give it to me it's 3/4 full.I looked at it and it was filled with shredded lettuce and at least 20 bread "CROUTONS " and "NO CRAB"I called the waiter over and showed him and said this is filled with bread and lettuce no crab! He said he would tell the chef! No apology no offer to get something different and left on the bill at $18!! I came here because I I'm a steak lover and got the reccomended bone in filet. It was very good at the beginning but as you got closer to the bone it was blood rare and not cooked at all.My sons was the same and he said the sause was to salty which it was but I like salt.My dad had the abolone which for the $79 price was ok and small portion but I get better calamari dore at my local restaurant down the street from my house for$19! Finally my wife had the"4" expensive scallops ok nothing special. This is a Steak House!Order the chorizo cheese bread a steak and the crispy potatoes and NOTHING else.Money was not an issue but $425 without tip and we had a total of 2 drinks for the table .Couple good bottles of wine and you've got a bad meal for over $600 . Go on some else's dime and have a good steak!

Meh

By chk1 |

We had a group of 8 and they were very helpful when we had to change the time since we would be late. That's the good. Now for the rest, I was told they had very many vegetarian options, turned out not that many, so plan on having just a few options unless you're good with sides and if your a vegan it gets even more scarce (can't get a baked potato since it's twice baked with cheese) and they can't make changes. There was debate as to whether the salmon was good, the steak was ok, the crab cocktail was shredded crab. The end all was that the waiter was very snooty. For a restaurant that was practically empty on a Friday night, he should have been grateful we were there rather than acting as a if he was doing us a favor. Would I go back? No. Overpriced for what we got.

Fabulous!

We did not have a reservation but were accomadated immediately. The food was fresh and full of flavour - best meal we have had since coming to the US a week ago!

Excellent Bone in Fillet; Pricey, but Great Choice for a Steak Dinner

By LucBjorn |

I went to this restaurant with 3 other business colleagues, 3 of us had the Bone in Fillet, 1 had the Crab. In addition we had various salads and sides. The steak was wonderfully prepared (medium rare); with a nicely caramelized outer portion, warm red inside and well seasoned with a salt based rub. My colleagues also enjoyed their steaks, and the gentleman who had the crab (who is a seafood aficionado) loved it. A tip for something different. Try the broccoli side dish, which is made up of a broccoli florets broken up and then seasoned and fried. It was quite unique, interesting and tasty (especially for broccoli). The bone-in Petit filet is expensive ($60), but definitely worth the try.

Avoid Eddie

By Wanderlust |

We have never had a bad meal here. This evening we had our first bad server; Eddie. Didn’t even know his name until the check arrived.

Fathers Day Favorite

By needtogetaway2 |

I was reluctant given the previous reviews but my husband wanted to try this and it was fathers day after all. We were seated at the small side tables that have the most amazing chairs: super big, comfy, leather, swivel- what more could you ask for in a seat. Dinner was equally great, We shared the sizzling shrimp as an appetizer & I had the petit filet which was cooked perfectly. I also recommend the brussel sprout chips, really just how I like them.

Lovely food but didn't go over and above

By stumpy |

Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. A little pricey. Steak was phenomenal although there were limited side options. Also restaurant aware it was a birthday celebration and although they acknowledged on arrival, they didn't do anything additional to recognise the event.

Wonderful meal and great service!!!! The crab was delicious. Loved the brussels sprouts chips. Truly enjoyed the atmosphere.

$700 Mistake- BEWARE

By kellygr90 |

I am sure most of you will not finish this review as it is very lengthy, but a small bit of background on me...I am a corporate meeting planner. Clients hires me to plan high end dinners 365 days a year. It is LITERALLY my job to know the best restaurants in town and recommend them to my client. For this dinner I took out all of my clients to a nice end-of-conference celebration after seeing and hearing amazing reviews of Osso. Taking my clients here was a HUGEEEEE mistake, one of the WORST of my 10-year career. I was so embarrassment at how incredibly terrible this experience was and I pray it does not impact the amount I am hired to book dinners...Osso has certainly been removed from our recommendations list. I could have had better service at an Outback. We had an 830pm reservation, upon being seated it took almost 25 minutes to even be greeted by our server Sean. He came back 20 minutes later with our drinks and that is when things started to go downhill. We tried to order appetizers, but were told to wait since he didn’t have time for us yet...he then proceeded to bus several tables, bring another table their food, bring another table their leftovers and check and then bussed that table too. Mind you, these are table all around us so we are sitting patiently watching him clean up when it would have taken less than 5 minutes to order the food (after all we had had 45 minutes to look at the menu BEFORE he said he would come back). Around 915pm we finally got to put our food order in. At 1030pm we got our food….we were a party of 5, three of us ordered steak medium rare and two ordered half an order of crab. I'm not sure what took an hour and 20 minutes to cook the food, but myself and my clients are all meeting planners so we cut them some slack. Until the 3 1/2 inch steaks myself and my client ordered come out WELL WELL DONE. There is no possible way you can over cook a steak that thick. It was completely inedible and for $70 a steak and a 2 hour wait it was grossly disappointing. We did send the steak back (the first time in over 10 years I have sent food back), and we got another order about 20 minutes later. It is now almost 11pm and it was very hard to be hungry as we had been there since 830pm and had appetizers over an hour ago. Sean could not have cared less. When the bill was presented, he didn't offered to compensate us for the terrible service or the ruined dinner at all (my client and I took our steaks to go, but with no microwave at the hotel they went in the trash...what a waste). When we asked about taking something off the bill for such a long wait and bad food, he literally cut us off mid-sentence to get the manager. Fine, I know managers are often the ones who have to approve comped food anyway. Except when she came out she could not have been any less bothered by how terrible this dining experience was. I am not trying to be snotty, on my own dime I do eat at the Outback. But to pay this much money for a work dinner that went so badly was regretful. Consider this a warning to anyone looking to treat themselves or friends/family. The food will be incredible...if you ever get to order it, if you even get it, and if it is actually cooked correctly. I feel that is too many IFs for a $700 bill. Go to John’s Grill, go to Epic, go to Lolinda, go to any other nice steakhouse but this one.

Sunday night vacation dinner for four

By paul b |

we were visiting San Fran and then Napa with another couple. We selected this place for dinner one night because it was in walking distance ( we were on Nob Hill ) and it wasn't a chain. We all ordered steaks and all enjoyed them. Service was ok, considering the upscale nature of the place. We all had an app and we shared a single dessert. ALL very good. One oddity: they charge $0.95 if you want bread served at your table. Great wine list.

Great SF restaurant

By Jackinbama |

We try to dine at the best restaurants in the cities we visit while traveling. I do a lot of research hoping to find them. Osso Steakhouse was one of two we chose in San Francisco. The Tadich Grill was the other. Both are excellent but this was the better of the two. To be fair this is at a different price point too. The restaurant wasn’t very busy when we went and we went earlier than our reservation time perhaps a bit earlier than the dinner crowd. Service was very good. We walked to the restaurant from the Ritz Carlton. Very doable but be advised that the hills are steep. We shared a nice bottle of Justin Isosceles Cabernet Sauvignon. They have a nice wine selection. My wife had the filet and I had the bone in filet. Two very nice steaks with the bone in version being the better of the two. We also shared the creamed spinach and the carrot side dishes. Both sides were delicious. I would highly recommend the restaurant.

Superb quality, both steaks and seafood!

By Richard T |

Last night's meal was truly superb. We started with the spinach salad, which was an outstanding version of baby spinach salad. Next, I had the house special bone-in filet. As always, it was perfectly prepared and oh-so delicious. Large portion too. My friend had the Sea Bass, which is my favorite fish dish here. I find it interesting that Osso has such great steaks, but also has a really wide selection of delicious seafood, including oysters, mussels, crab cakes, and fish, so there's something for everyone. The side dishes are some of the best in SF, we had the wonderful creamed spinach (I also love the twice-baked potato, and the chorizo Mac n cheese). Ambience is great: very comfortable booths, modern Art Deco upscale decor, and quiet enough for conversation. Combined with the superb service, Osso is a great evening that I think you'll really enjoy!

Disappointing

By Peter J |

For a supposedly high-end restaurant, certainly in a prestigious location, this eatery leaves a lot to be desired: It is extremely noisy, chairs for 2-place tables are so closely spaced that back-to-back chairs rub against each other; infants and very young children are accommodated at dinner time; clothing worn by guests includes shorts, flip-flops - and those are just the non-food issues. I ordered their bone-in NY Strip charred and medium rare, carefully specifying 'no butter or sauce.' It arrived with a wet surface. My wife ordered the Petite Filet, medium rare: it arrived with a charred surface on both sides. The side orders of creamed spinach and sauteed mushrooms were quite good, and service was impeccable. Will not visit this restaurant again.

Disappointed

By hcastro |

This was our fourth annual visit in a row, but something happened between December 2017 and December 2018. There were 4 us, we were promptly seated and order cocktails which were very good. But that was about it. We ordered a calamari appetizer which arrived cold. The server was no where to be seen. Ok, we ordered a Cesar salad, what we got was a lump of soggy wilted lettuce with cheese, horrible. The steaks arrived, cooked to order but: cold. The side orders: mushrooms and Brussels sprouts: cold. The dessert was good though. Hopefully this was an off night but have doubts about returning next year.

Very good dinner

This was recommended by the concierge at the Fairmont, had a good steak with friendly efficient staff, not great table in the booths... find them too high! But would return

Somewhat satisfied

God atmosphere. Service OK, but not great. Food prepared perfect, but not the best meat So in final. Price compared to experience didn't match

Great food and atmosphere

By 409kathleent |

We were celebrating my best friend's bday. We had an amazing meal including bone-in filet and crab. Delicious. Even better was the service. What started as a crappy evening at the Redwood (poor excuse for a "restaurant") at the Clift turned into a wonderful birthday celebration at Osso.

The steak just melts in your mouth

By Sharron S |

The service was exceptional!! The staff was extremely knowledgeable of the menu from food to wine. I had the Petit filet mignon. I like my steak well, therefore it's hard to predict if it is going to be dry or overcooked, however this steak was cooked to tender perfection!! Best steak I ever had!!!

Osso Steakhouse San Francisco - Good in parts but not enough parts

By grwpl |

Overall left feeling disappointed and have certainly had better steaks in San Francisco, for instance in Mortons. Liked the room. Pot boiler starter very nice however servers thumb in the sauce as it was served not great, scallops looked very nice. Filet was ok but nothing special, ribeye was enormous but tough and very fatty. Good selection of local wines available. I really wanted to like this place but a high end and expensive steakhouse should serve first class steaks cooked perfectly every time and that was not the case.

Nice atmosphere, low key, good food -- has an 'older' feel to it

By surgerator |

Osso delivered - good steak, good drinks (champagne), nice atmosphere, and great service. The one complaint about the steak (filet) was that it comes in butter (I think) sauce on the plate -- this was fine, it was just a little too much. I suggest you be aware before you order - it's not bad, it's just a bit too much. We also had the dungeness crab -- which was exquisite. Our server was top notch. They have 'cozy' seating, which are leather swivel chairs. An while this seems nice and intimate -- if you over 5'8" you'll be up against your date's legs.

Ave at best

By paul l |

Steakhouses are somewhat funny. The service was excellent at the steak house but I found it to be very overpriced but I am spoiled by some great steakhouses in New York City. I would look elsewhere within the city of San Francisco for Good Eats at reasonable prices.

Amazing service

By YQUIN |

I went to this place because of the food reviews. I will go again to this place because of the service. I did have a great dinner here. Don't get me wrong, I did like the food. I had the bone-in ribeye and it was definitely above average. The day was S. Valentine's and it was crazy inside, and I must have been the only solo around (yes, wife not happy of me working afar that day). From every table I could appreciate demanding couples trying to make their date memorable to the partner at the price of putting extra pressure in the servers. Nonetheless I could also perceive how those guys have mastered the art of pleasing the customer, at their own sweat. All my questions were answer with diligent precision, the suggestions made by my server were exactly what I expected and all my dishes were brought on exactly the moment that they were required. My out-of-context situation was properly compensated by this experience. Will come back.

Best steak in US?

By Tony F |

Staying just down the road at the Stafford Court, 4 elderly Aussies wandered to this nearby steakhouse, which we were informed by a very snooty waiter had won best steak in the USA. Okay, maybe so, but a little bit more attention from the waitstaff who were certainly not overworked as only 3 other tables were occupied. A minor indiscretion with some spilled wine which made a mess of the table was treated with indifference. A change of table cloth would have been nice , but no go. The steaks were superb, although very expensive.

Outstanding Meal

By CBella123 |

Had dinner here before my show at San Francisco Playhouse. The meal and service were outstanding, the petite filet melt in your mouth with delicious sides of cream corn and crispy roasted potatoes. The ginger martini was divine. Would definitely eat here again, in fact planning to eat here again before I leave town!

Could not reserve a private room 5 weeks in advance!

By SFTravelMavens |

In full disclosure I have not eaten here, because I couldn't get a reservation! I called at the beginning of April to inquire about a private room 5 weeks out. The person I spoke with first gave confusing information about a set menu, saying that the entire group had to order the same cut of steak. This sounded absurd to me, and when I pushed back she said "or you could order off the main menu". Ok, problem solved. Then she let me know that the private room was available on the date I wanted. So she said we were all set. I asked what I needed to do to confirm the room and she said "well I can't confirm you will get the room until a few days before". What?!? This also sounded absurd and when I asked why she said "sometimes the owner wants to use that room, so we can't guarantee it until that week." How can you plan an event for 10 people when you're not guaranteed a room? If the owner did want to use the room what were we supposed to do for a plan B at the last minute? I think they need to decide whether they are running a restaurant or a private club. After I hung up I was thinking I must have gotten the information wrong, it couldn't possible be right. So I called back and left a message for the manager. Nobody ever called back. So we went to Harris' instead who confirmed a private room and got our $2k dinner.

Hidden Gem of a steakhouse

By Melissa K |

Looking for steakhouses this wasn't the top on the list but it should be !!! The cheese chorizo bread appetizer is a MUST if you love cheese and bread .. the steak is made in it's own juices aka extra delicious. Drinks were delicious and reasonably priced !

Best steak EVER!

By jjeppson |

Go to their web site and read about how their steaks are aged and the care taken to provide you with the very finest cuts of meat you can buy so you'll truly appreciate it when you're eating it. I got the 18 oz bone-in fillet mignon cooked medium rare (as suggested on their web site and menu). It was awesome, huge, and worth every penny of the $60 price tag. Also got the fried stuffed Spanish olives starter and the sides of crispy roasted potatoes and sautéed mushrooms....all very tasty. Got the mango sorbet refresher du jour for dessert, which was disappointing - it didn't explode with flavor the way a sorbet should; in fact it was rather bland, and it didn't have that icy sorbet texture but instead was creamy and mushy. Wish I'd chosen a different dessert, but the steak was so spectacular (best I've ever had in fact) that I was pleased with the meal and would definitely go back again next time I'm in San Francisco. Osso is right at the top of Nob Hill across from Grace Cathedral and they have complimentary valet parking. The interior decor is a pleasing and colorful art deco (see photos attached).

Worst steak ever

By Claudia T |

Ordered the rib eye which is huge (about the size of your head) but was totally flavorless. Didn't even taste much like steak. Left 3/4 of it on the plate and nobody even bothered to ask if there was a problem. Hefty prices.

Serious steaks

By Matthew J |

The steaks here are excellent. For my second visit here I went with the petite filet which was tender, buttery smooth and the right size. The ribeyes are delicious but enormous. The side dishes were great but it’s all about the excellent cuts of beef. A very good wine list and highly attentive and helpful service. We sat in a separate room which was great for our conversation.

Excellent as always

By sheldon129 |

I have been to Osso about 6 times. Everything about them is first class. My choices for great steak are abundant in San Francisco yet I can’t pass on Osso. The best part, my wife is a vegetarian and finds plenty of appetizers and sides that have her suggesting we go to Osso. Outside of the food the staff is superb. On 4/20/19, about 7pm or so, I had an opportunity to watch, and listen, to the manager deal with an upset customer. The manager, I don’t know her name, did an excellent job with a rude whining customer. I believe the loudmouth, who wanted to be heard by others enjoying themselves, complained about his credit card not being returned for 20 minutes. He was attending a show next door. He was flustered at this and added that his steak was tough. He continued complaining while the manager addressed his concerns. She was very professional and an excellent representative of the restaurant. My two thoughts were; I know Osso checks with guests to see if they are attending a show next door so they can expedite service if needed, I have always been asked when visiting, including the manager checking on my table making sure all is well, and, if I’m paying good money for a steak, and it’s ‘tough’, I’ll know in a couple bites and then rectify the problem. I won’t wait till the check is paid to tell anyone hoping to get a discount. This guy seemed like a cheapskate with a loud mouth. Kudos to the entire staff at Osso for making it my favorite restaurant.

Porterhouse

By Walter H |

I was tempted to try their biggest steak, and this was a good choice. Of course it is so much, that you can share the plate like we did. Something on the side and a good wine. This made a nice birthday dinner.

No Service,No Management,so no complaints

By Gordon C |

Facts:My wife and I splurge for a getaway once a year in S F. We stay at the Stanford Court hotel and go out for a nice dinner. We went to Osso Steakhouse just a few blocks away. Facts:We had 8:30 reservations. We were seated and ordered drinks and Ribeye, roasted crab and shrimp. The restaurant closes at ten. At 9:45 I inquired about our food as it had been an hour. Turns out the waiter had some issue about the chefs, not sure why this is our issue. The true issue is the waiter never provided any services. If you have to flag down the waiter to get another drink or ask about your food? This is a very expensive restaurant and one goes there for the service and excellent food. The manager came to our table after we wanted to cancel our orders and go eat somewhere else or have a couple of drinks. I see why this restaurant is so poorly run, starts with management and goes from there. Although the busboy was so apologetic, that’s a first to be apologized by the busboy. The couple next to us made the comment” you guys don’t seem to be to upset”. Fact: We are not going to let some crappie restaurant wreck our weekend together. I am writing this review because of one thing. The manager. I left a voice mail for manager to call me. If it’s not important to reach out to your customers then it explains the restaurant. It was just a big disappointment for something we had be looking forward to for weeks. Do yourself a favor as there are to many good places in S F to spend your money. Getting no service is the best reason to pass this place over. Thanks for reading Gordon

Dinner

By BkAdrian87traveler |

One of our party said let’s go have a nice steak up at this place he has been to numerous times. We got there and the GM was there and we told him he had the honor of meeting a gold medalist tonight. The GM gave us 5 star service. He is a great guy. We ordered a bottle of wine or two. Picked out some pot stickers, fried calamari and bread that was loaded down with a cheese sauce. It was all great tasting. We then all ordered steaks. Majority ordered the filet however I always go with the larger cuts so I ordered the bone in ribeye. All the filets had great flavor and nice and tender. My steak was pretty tough but did have great flavor also. The service was great along with the meal. I would recommend this place

Food Great Old School Steakhouse Ambiance

By fmjmemphis |

This is an old school steakhouse stuck in a weird condo building so you think you might not be at right place at first. Everyone was cool, front desk cool took me to table right away as I was in a walking cast so I appreciated the thoughtfulness while I waited on my party. However, as I got to the table it was apparent that there was some sort of a rush for table turnover and the waiter and the people servicing the table were all very pressed for time. That was the worst part of the meal so I won't do well here on that just be prepared that they may put you in a foul mood if you get the wrong waiters. Any how, food saved them. My steak beautiful buttery filet perfectly cooked. Crab lovely beautifully seasoned. Prices not bad. I would go back with a date. Too full for dessert. Martini doesn't hurt so I feel better. Then, that pesky waiter. I asked him to ask front to call cab he says you do better walking up street then waiting, i.e. my table. (Sigh) did you notice the boot on my foot? I can't walk downstairs let alone up these hilly streets. The valet situ was hectic as well waited at least 15 for car to be brought around. Get it together Osso, your food is being brought down by your slip shod service.

Just didn’t rose to the occasion

By Steven G |

Mediocre service combined with lower than expected food quality makes for genuine disappointment. Steak came out a perfect medium rare, except almost cool to the touch. I expect a $50+ steak to come out at least warm. Brussel sprouts greasy, masking and marring the innovators side. Server inattentive. Salad plate sat waiting to be cleared for a while. I’ve eaten here before and have had amazing experiences. Tonight was simply disappointing. And I’m not even done with dinner.

Anniversary dinner

We have eaten at the other restaurants associated with the company that owns this restaurant (the stinking rose, crab house), very classy, love the seating, the crab was excellent, asparagus was so good, steaks were great. We had a great time. Yea would recommend it again

Went to dinner, Friday night, party of 4. Warm welcome and seated promptly. The place is a little dated but clean and was just fine. Steaks were cooked perfectly and the side dishes were fantastic!

Great Food, Terrible Service!

By jimbob1101 |

Read the reviews and ratings on steakhouses in San Francisco! Osso was right up there, and located on Knob Hill in a classy area of the city. The food was very good, but the service was very slow. Not just for us, but everyone around us as well. The waiter said that they had been "slammed" with business. Personally, it looks busy, but not that busy. Too bad, because it was a Saturday night, and they should have expected that it would be busy. When you pay above average to expensive prices, the food and the service should be outstanding. Would not repeat!

O So wanted to be better

By due |

60s birthday for my honey. They knew in reservation but no effort to provide nice seating location. Candle not even lit on table. Had to call down waiter to order. Lights way too bright and after several patrons asked to be turned down they complied. So ambiance gets a D. Now food gets a B+. Steak excellent and seafood scallops very good as was side dish and fresh bread. Wine selection weak and like most overpriced so bring your own and pay the $10 corkage. If it wasn't for going to a concert at the Masonic next door, we would have gone elsewhere. So overall considering expense a solid C, no more.

Osso bummer

By George D |

Wow. Worst Rib Eye I can remember, compounded by dry Dungeness Crab and fairly bland cream corn and Mac & Cheese. Service was adequate but really lacked empathy when it was clear the meal went sideways ...... took over an hour for food to arrive. Last nail in the coffin we were the only table not offered Sour Dough Bread (in San Francisco!!!!). Good ambience overall but be careful with this place.

The best steak by far in SF. And I'm a local.

The best steak by far in San Francisco!!! I live near by and it's my first time at Osso. From the greeting by the staff, to the great drinks, you can't beat the food experience at Osso. It's blows away the The Four Restaurant in my opinion. Order the sides and a filet, eat and enjoy a great evening!!

Yet Another Great Steak in SF

By Harry W |

Only in the last year have we homed in on some truly great steak places in San Francisco. We really enjoy LoLinda's in the Mission (see my review) and we recently visited Osso with another couple before a concert. For old time San Franciscan's, the restaurant is in Nob Hill on California Ave (a few blocks west of the Fairmont Hotel). Years ago, it was Vanessi's Italian restaurant. Oslo's is more elegant than LoLinda's with waiters in tuxes and a lovely setting. It is relatively quiet compared to the average restaurant which is something to consider if you need to do business or really would enjoy a conversation. My wife and I shared the bone-in rib eye and I have to say it was outstanding! The twice-baked potato was superb and their brussels spouts "chip" were so good we ordered a second helping. Our friends ordered a dish of fresh corn which was also wonderful. They have a very complete wine list and the wait staff clearly has an excellent handle on fine wines. We didn't think we had room for dessert but I'm glad we tried them. The french vanilla panna cotta was the best I've ever encountered and the sorbets (we had two) were also delicious. We'll definitely be back!!

Never got to the table!

By pr0jectmgmt |

Booked this table for 4 last minute through Open Table (on Saturday night), booked it for 7.30 and arrived on time. Left waiting at the bar table for ages with the menus - no service for drinks etc. Couple next to us had already been waiting 30 minutes for their table and had only just been offered drinks - not looking good for us! Asked the front desk how long our table would be - they had no clue - just that there were three tables in front of us - no idea how long it would be etc My advice to Osso Steakhouse - stop accepting bookings through apps like Open Table if you know your place is busy and you're unlikely to serve people at the time they've booked. We felt like we were just being ignored - not great service! We ended up walking out.

Amazing Steak - Price to match

By Rupert M |

Went here with some business colleagues and while the steak was amazingly well cooked, it felt a little lacking in atmosphere / service for a place with this sort of price tag. If you like your beef, highly recommended, but a four star not a five in my book.

Just Steak

By Chribri01 |

We have been in osso douring our stage in SF. Its $$$$, but good service and good Steaks :-) (Thats it, but tripadviser want 100 letters..)

Best steak I have ever had in America

By Paul D |

I had the best steak I have ever had in America at the Osso Steakhouse. Now that is a big claim but I recommend you go there, order the huge bone in rib eye and be prepared to be amazed. The dining room is sort of old school but I liked it. The service is also sort of old school and very good. If you really want a treat also go for the skillet-roasted chorizo cheese bread

Good, but restaurant is tired

By MessyBun2020 |

The cheese skillet bread is excellent. Steaks were also good, overall we had a nice dinner. The restaurant itself is a little tired. The chair I sat in felt like I was able to fall through the seat and the spring was coming out of the chair. I was able to kick the spring with my foot. Good food, but not memorable, besides the cheese skillet bread.

Food great but feels a bit tired

By dicky25 |

The steak was fantastic, the lamb chops were very good and the crab stater was pretty good. However, the place felt a bit tired. The service definitely had something to do with that. Our server was not knowledgable on a number of questions we asked, which was disappointing considering the might high price tag. Ambience was slightly lacking as well and it seems like the crowd are not as refined as on previous visits. It's a shame because the food is really good but something needs a life here to bring it up to date.

Good Ribeye

By frau |

I returned for dinner after two years and ordered the Ribeye with potatoes for my wife and I,the meat had some gristle unlike the last time we ate there and I had to cut the meat myself and the knife was not adequate for the job, i finally asked the waiter to cut the meat for us.The last time we ate here our waiter cut the meat table side and he was very good at his job, not so in this case.

Lovely

By stbrigid |

Very good dinner. The essence of a steakhouse. Great steak. Great potatoes. Great spinach (which is big. Very good spinach.)

OK - but not great

By petercN6190KQ |

Recommendation from our hotel to eat here late on a Sunday night. Decent service but not great - our appetisers were ok although the crab crostini was a little tasteless. The mains were varied - the petit filet was very good, the rib-eye and the New York were just too big to be a sensible meal for a normal appetite - and the two diners have quite big appetites - sides were ok (fried onions) This restaurant suffers form trying to do huge meals instead of super quality in my opinion. If you select carefully from the menu there is some really nice food.

Save your time and your money - don't go here

By franklin D r |

We were optimistic about this place after seeing a few write-ups about it that seemed positive, but we should have dug a bit deeper to read all of the bad reviews that we saw after our experience. If you go to a restaurant for the sides, this place is good. The kettle bread was great and the calamari was delicious. Our waiter was extremely kind (I wish we got his name), and although the service was slow, he was clearly overworked and he was nothing but apologetic for the wait and extremely friendly. I ordered the petit filet mignon and my boyfriend ordered the bone in ribeye. The menu doesn't say how many ounces the ribeye is, it simply says "big." Both of our steaks took forever to arrive. My filet was ok (not great) and was cooked medium rare, which I had ordered. My boyfriend's steak was overcooked and after he cut in a few pieces, the middle was stone cold. We flagged the waiter and he took the steak back to the kitchen and was extremely apologetic. We then waited quite a while for the steak to come back from the kitchen. In the meantime, a man who we can only assume was the GM had come to our table and asked how everything was. After we told him that the ribeye was sent back to the kitchen because it was cold his response was, "yes well, it's a large cut of meat so these things can be hard to cook all the way through." Bad response to give to already upset customers. When you're shelling out $70 for a steak, you want it to be at least not cold and cooked properly. While we were waiting for the steak, we noticed several other ribeyes making their way back to the kitchen. If you can't cook the meat all the way through because it's so massive, don't offer such a huge piece of meat!!!! We eventually told the waiter not to bring the steak back to the table because 1) it was taking so long and 2) it didn't taste very good to begin with and wasn't cooked properly. The waiter was once again very kind and apologetic. The GM then came back to our table and said, "I don't know what to tell you guys other than these things take time, so I don't know what you want me to do." Again, not a great response. Thankfully, the ribeye was removed from our bill. The GM told the waiter if he wanted to offer us a free dessert that would be OK, but we just wanted to get out of there. Overall - great sides, but bad meat. Not what you want when you're going to a steakhouse -- and an expensive one at that. Save your time and your money and go somewhere where the food is better and the staff will treat you well.

Heavenly Hunk of Meat

By ELHyman |

Osso for O-Sso good! This is the best steak I've ever had. Ordered the filet mignon and the best way to describe the texture is as a creme brulee of steaks. The exterior has the same candied crunch and the interior is so tender it melts in your mouth. It is the most amazing experience biting into this fancy filet. All the sides are also a treat- the chorizo bread, the Brussels sprout chips, and the asparagus soup were all memorable. This is our favorite place to bring friends and family for a special occasion and to introduce them to a heavenly hunk of meat.

Post holiday meal "just for us"

By FVStrona |

‪Perfect rainy night meal @OssoSteakhouse It was all about the meat. Several cuts offered, but the bone in filet mignon is what takes it home. It's huge portion size. But that cheese bread! Hot, gooey with just some spice from the chirizo- almost worth ordering two. Even the chrispy potatoes & veggies were spot on‬. Simple, clean taste with a balance of herbs and butter. Reservations suggested. They have these great "cammand center" seats for couples, but if you are both tall; ask for the booth. Not a cheap night; but definately worth it.

Quiet Night

By george w |

Stopped for a quick dinner at the bar on a Tuesday night. Kinda quiet but the entire staff especially the bartender from Dublin were great. Great suggestions, steak was amazing and the brussel sprout chips were awesome. I'll go back! -George

Amazing Steak Meal!

By Suzanne K |

Wow! This was a great meal. Amazing cuisine. Steaks were perfect (medium rare to medium depending on the orderer - waitstaff was fabulous. The sides were rich and delicious. The music was fire. The only challenge was it was completely empty which felt a bit sad. We were told they had just been packed for a month and had another rush starting but the ambiance was affected by the lack of people.

Best steak ever!!

By Julie H |

Enjoyed a fab meal here, the steaks were amazing. The staff and service were great. Pricey but worth every penny.

Good food. Mixed service

By sgwedslb |

The food was good although quite expensive. The service staff were friendly but not high quality as they forgot to bring at least two orders for drinks that they needed reminding for. Given the prices you direct to not have to order things twice.

Excellent Service with average food

By TravellerInAsia2011 |

I have been here for dinner, ordered the seafood combo which honestly were not definitely fresh seafood in any of the cases. The service was excellent but they have a bit of miss communication with each other because they were coming to ask the same question in different time. The atmosphere was nice but I did not find the food that excellent.

Great steak and service

By Surfmac |

Business dinner with a key partner. Everything was on point at Osso, from the environment to great service from Jake. The bone in ribeye was cooked perfectly and the sides were delicious. I highly recommend.

won't be disappointed

By Gregory C |

everything we ordered was made to perfection. prices were on the high side but the quality was worth it

Very good steakhouse

By Maxz007 |

Rock solid steakhouse. Good selection of appetizers and steaks. Friendly service and great location.

"Osso HOT!"

By Trish P |

The food and atmosphere was awesome, but it was our server, Paul, who made the evening memorable. The weather was 100 degrees outside with no AC, but Paul went out of his way to make sure we were taken care of even to the point of allowing us to sit outside on the balcony with a great view overlooking the city. Thanks, Paul!

Wonderful if a little pricey

By Jane A |

Seriously the best steak we’ve had in USA, melt in the mouth, which we had with shared veg and stunning potatoes, a bit pricey but have to admit it was totally worth it, food and wine excellent and staff friendly, attentive and knowledgeable, lovely ambience, would so recommend and just wish we could return soon but travel plans don’t by allow, please visit - also a booking is recommended x

Disappointing Night

By Jon C |

We have been to Osso's several times in the past and have always enjoyed the experience. We decided to drive into San Francisco a few nights ago for a nice steak dinner. When we arrived, we were greeted (actually not even acknowledged) by one of the rudest hosts in a long time. Just previous to us, the family before us was not happy with their table and asked for a new table, twice. We were up next, while the host was obviously trying to train a young lady and was not speaking to her very kindly. If he was one of my employees, he would have been fired that evening. He then turned his attention to us and placed us in the back of the restaurant where there was one other table being occupied by a family with no one else in the room. We asked to be re-seated in the main dinning area where there is warmth and more people. We found our server was good and so was the food, but the beginning experience already placed a damper on the evening. Management should get rid of this guy or at least educate him on how to greet and treat their customers as if they are valued before they don't have anymore customers!

Hands down one of the better steakhouses I’ve dined out. The hubby can grill up a mean steak, so we don’t often opt to visit steakhouses, but it was a special weekend, so we decided to try a new place. I had researched so many dif steakhouses and narrowed it down to this one which was by all means, the best choice. It was July 4th weekend so it wasn’t too crowded and getting a reservation was easy but my guess is on a regular weekend, it’s gotta be pretty crowded. What I liked about this place was that it had the old skool vibe with a modern touch. Keeping it short and sweet……food was delicious from apps, salads, mains to dessert. We dined with a foodie friend and her problem is that dessert is never good enough (she bakes so I can see that), but here, they passed the test; dessert was really good. We corked a bottle of wine at $35 (pretty cheap for a really nice steakhouse) and had some pre dinner cocktails (they make the best dirty martini and was pretty cheap for SF/steakhouse standards). The cherry on top? Our server, Thomas! OMG! WHAT A HOOT. I’ve met quite a few great servers, but Thomas takes the cake. Thomas was not only good at his job and super attentive to our group, but he SINGS apparently. Ha! He and the hubby were reminiscing about concerts and bolted out verses from songs they both loved. If only every server was like Thomas! I would definitely come back again and will try to make it a regular spot. Side Note: We ubered. Didn’t look like there was much parking around but really, who is trying to drive with such great cocktails served at this place.

Im still in awe

By Stharp48 |

I have been to some of the very best steak houses in the US...And now I have to rethink my top ten list. Osso has certainly taken its place in the top THREE. From the wait staff to the table settings...AMAZING just keeps coming up. We had the bone in rib eye...BIG is an understatement. It was prepared perfectly. Ask for medium...that big of a cut must be done at that temp. It was more medium rare in the centre. So tasty and tender. Perfectly seasoned. The calmari was so great. The bread in a kettle was glorious. We had twice baked potatoes...split them... Brussel sprouts chips...Oh my... And sauteed mushrooms that pared perfectly with the meat. Our waiter...a gentleman...his assistant...PERFECTO!!! It is a DON'T MISS spot in San Fran. Free valet parking, as well.

Excellent steakhouse

By Matthew J |

Had a business dinner at this great steakhouse. The location is in Nob Hill and in a quieter area. The service is attentive and helpful. A very good wine list. The steaks are outrageously good and enormous. Size aside, they are flavorful and tasty. The sides are good but overpowered by the beef. The seafood entrees were a great alternative. The appetizers were creative and excellent. No room for dessert. A very good restaurant- highly recommended.

Romantic Elegant and Stylish Steakhouse

By bucketlistbabs |

We had an amazing meal at Osso. It’s placed a stop on my top ten restaurants and I can’t wait to return. We started with both of their bread options, because of course we had to try them both. One was warm, sliced sourdough, the other was similar but it sat on a bed of chorizo cheese sauce. Heaven. We shared their asparagus soup, lovely. My husband had a filet and said it was the best steak he had every had. I had the dungeons crab sandwich. I was so full by then I picked all the crab out and left the bread. 😂

Big disappointment

By frequenttravler20 |

I had dinner with a group friends where we ordered different types of steaks. Unfortunately, the quality of meat was poor especially for the bone-in ribeye which had no flavor at all. Overall service was great and the wine choices were decent but the food was a huge disappointment. It's a good thing that I am from out of town because I will not comeback again.

Skillet cheese bread was amazing.

By Andrew P |

Skillet cheese bread was amazing. Steaks were great and sides were good. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a nice steakhouse.

Excellent!

By Shirley T |

Excellent meal! Old-style steakhouse with phenomenal steaks, apps & sides. No valet parking (would have been nice) but aside from that, this is a "must visit" for steak lovers.

Wonderful Steak House

By LoveToTraval |

Osso is a first rate steak house with lovely modern decor. The service is excellent, We were seated at a nice table…..until the guests at the table across the aisle started sharing cell phone videos, with volume! The staff quickly whisked us to another table (a very nice corner table), and comped us a drink, After enjoying our cocktail, we had the asparagus soup, which is amazing, We then enjoyed a mid rare fillet with roasted potatoes and creamed corn, Everything was superb. It is worth noting that there are several nice options for non red meat eaters. There are some seafood dishes, including a nice salmon.

Excellent Steak worth the Money!

By Cheryl F |

Atmosphere was wonderful, quite for nice conversation. Food was over the moon good. Ordered the filet steak, one of the best I have had.

Delicious Steak

By my c |

Had a team dinner here for a group of 14. We all ordered the steak and some appetizers. For appetizers I would definitely recommend the Crab Cakes, Cheese Bread and Yellowtail Carpaccio. I ordered the Petit Filet Mignon Medium cook and it was delicious. For dessert I ordered the Salted Carmel Vanilla crunch cake and it was to die for. We were all very happy after our dinner :)

Good dinner

By Jennifer S |

We arranged a last minute business dinner last week. The restaurant was great. Very flexible with us as we didn’t know how many 4-6-8 people. Views from Nob Hill very nice on our way... food was excellent including the cocktails, salads, steak and sides. Lemoncello Cake worth a bite!

Incredible Meal

By Robert O |

Hosted a business dinner here for seven people. The food was excellent, everyone loved what they ordered. The service was impeccable. Our waiter Jack did a great job serving us, was very friendly and full of stories and jokes. Great wine list with a wide selection.

Do NOT go here!!!

By Tobi17 |

Unbelievably disappointed in this property. Should have realized right from the start when the wait staff took our dirty cutlery from first course and placed it back on the table for our next course. The washroom should be looked at by the department of health and would likely be shut down. Steaks arrived on stainless platter - stone cold and the vegetables served on another cold platter were totally overcooked. When I asked for a meal that was HOT they brought my steak back overcooked like shoe leather. The person beside me asked for his to be cooked a little more and they brought it back completely CHARRED! They actually brought me a 3rd steak but by then our entire table of 21 had finished eating. I asked for a Monte Cristo coffee and the server said “What’s that”? So I asked for a hot coffee with Bailey’s & Kahlua and when it arrived .,, Absolutely stone cold. I would think we dropped about $3,000 on our meals .. we would have been BETTER to go to someplace like The Bears Den. This was a terrible experience and worse - we paid the bill and there were NO concessions.

Osso Oh So Awesome

By Richard1610 |

I wanted to eat a good steak before leaving the USA and Osso didn't disappoint. I had the New York because it was not as big as the other cuts and I don't like to eat filet mignon, but it was still 22+ oz. The steak was cooked to perfection, medium rare seared in its own juices. The soup, spinach and dessert were also very good. I'll be back!

This is a great ambience and a truly delicious meal!

By Richard T |

This was a wonderful meal! We started with the crab cakes, which are one of the best anywhere. Crispy on the outside, so fresh and flavorful on the inside. No bread, all crab. Delicious! And, along with it, the signature Chorizo Cheese bread, which is to die for. This is a wonderful sourdough loaf sitting in a pool of melted chorizo cheese. You must try this! Then we shared a filet mignon, and a Sea Bass. Both are superb dishes, and accompanied with sides of creamed spinach and twice cooked potato. The quality of all the food is top rate. Also, the ambience is really nice. It is luxurious, quiet enough for conversation, and very comfortable leather booths. Our server, Ian, is the best! This was such a great dining experience. Highly recommended!

Probably the best steakhouse in SF

By sunny77773 |

The bone-in Ribeye was my selection even before I entered the restaurant for the first time. And it turned out to be the best I've eaten in a very long time. A 34oz cooked medium-rare to perfection! It couldn't get any better. The baked potato and selection of side veggies complemented it well. All washed down with a superb 2013 Del Dotto Cab we brought in and which was served well by our waiter (sadly I didn't note his name) who served it off an elegant decanter. Nice, elegant ambience and overall dining experience that won't be easily forgotten. Not cheap, but then quality always comes at a price.

Best Steak Ever!

By pursegirl04 |

Wanted to have a nice dinner in San Fran and Osso didn't disappoint. Coming from Tampa which has some amazing steakhouses (Bern's!). I had the small filet and my husband had fish. Both dishes were amazing. Not inexpensive, but worth it for a nice night out.

Oh so okay

By ZayM |

I expected greatness and got ok-ness. Steak was good but not great, the sides were okay but a bit dull. I missed Ruth Chris....

The best Steak House, hands down!

By Tegreman |

Went to Osso in May while visiting my company office in San Francisco. I have been to many steak houses before but not Osso. Enjoyed a Jameson neat at the bar while waiting for everyone to arrive. Atmosphere is upscale but relaxed and the interior is well appointed. Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable and recommended getting my steak medium rare. At the table, we had a bottle of the house red wine. I am not a wine buff but this wine was great. I ordered the yellowtail carpaccio appetizer, which melted in my mouth. My entree was the bone-in filet mignon(medium rare) with the pumpkin seed and Gorgonzola topped asparagus. The asparagus was crisp and tasty. My filet was buttery tender, simply seasoned with salt and cooked to perfection. This filet was huge and I had to take a break before finishing. Hands down, the best steak I have ever had. Osso is definitely in the upper price point but is sooo worth it. Add to your steak house bucket list!

Quiet restaurant with great food

By MzB65 |

The food and the service at Osso is impeccable. This is full service restaurant and we experienced great interactions and attention from our head waiter AND every single individual that was a part of the wait staff team for our table. We ordered the Porterhouse Steak, salad, the Chorizo & Queso loaf, Crispy Potatoes and Chorizo Mac N Cheese. For dessert, we had the Limoncello Mascarpone Cake and the Creme Brulee Cheesecake. Overall, everything was wonderful and the restaurant environment is quiet so you can actually have a conversation without having to strain to hear or be heard. This restaurant is expensive, so be prepared to spend $200 for two people, including drinks.

Moms Night Out

By Caran58 |

My friend and I stumbled across this spot while heading to a concert at the Masonic (right next door). They seemed very busy, but the food was delicious. We would definitely go back. The twice baked potato and chicken sandwich were delicious.

Sub Par

By LaDonna A |

My experience wasn't so great. I had to send the steak back because it was undercooked and the salad was a joke. While I waited... the young couple across from us were behaving so inappropriate for such a nice place. Not willing to give it another go. Maybe you will have better luck.

Perfect

By ericbengo |

I have been to a lot of steakhouse in the US but this one was just perfect. The bone ribeye was huge, cooked to perfection, outside crunchy and inside moist and juicy. The taste was fabulous and addictive. The side dishes were good and the dessert with their caramel crunchy cake was awesome. the service was fast and efficient. An address not to miss if you go to San Francisco and you like meat!

Best steakhouse!

By hanna_ksd@hotmail.com |

A little bit of the beaten track but well worth the steps up Nob Hill. Best meat I have yet to find!

Classic steakhouse fare.

By Jonathan P |

Osso serves classic steakhouse fare--oysters, shrimp cocktail, a variety of San Francisco favourite Dungeness crab and obviously thick, juicy steaks. While redone, it exudes old school steakhouse vibe, with waiters buzzing to and fro in black tuxedos. A solid choice for carnivores with a few good choices for fish overs as well.

Not a good experience this time.

By David B |

Not a good experience this time. My bone-in ribeye had lots of connective tissue, was on the tough side, had big globs of fat instead of marbeling, and was too salty. Although it was huge, less than half of it was edible. It was disappointing because I’ve had great steaks here previously. Service was great though.

Great meal and Great Service!

By Peggy C |

We came here not really knowing anything about the restaurant other than it was by our hotel. Our server was Jake and he was fantastic! The food was sooo good! You must order the cheese skillet bread it is out of this world. The salad and pork chop we ordered was also very good.

Delicious filet

By Joanne L |

Restaurant week in San Fran is the perfect time to get a full meal for $65. It came with delicious cheesey bread, Caesar salad, petit filet, potatoes and a creme dessert. It was a long time before they took our order and brought the bread. But it was worth the wait.

Better After Dark

By calflyer80 |

This was my second visit to Osso. This visit was before the sun set . Quite frankly much of the steakhouse atmosphere was missing in the daylight. The food (filet) is good but does not standout among the steakhouses of San Francisco. The sides are small and the drinks are good. The service is very good and prices somewhat reasonable for the location on Nob Hill. Overall, Osso is a good experience but go when the sun goes down in the city for the steakhouse feel.

Very dissapointung

By Dennis M M |

We visited Osso Steakhouse for dinner on September 16, 2017. Service was good but the food was awful. Two of us ordered the rib eye steak. Cost was 59.95 each. Without any reservation the worst steak I have ever had. It was not at proper temperature, way too cold. It was full of fat and very tough. I will never go back there again. The only thing that was good was the cheese bread.

Fantastic meal

By WoodyCambridge |

We were recommended this restaurant by our hotel, we were not disappointed. One of the best meals I have ever had. Crab cakes to start followed by more crab and a delicious dessert. Great service, great atmosphere. If I ever get back to San Fransisco, I will definitely go back.

This place is really great.

By JamesRiverHugh |

I googled steak houses near me and this came up. Absolutely fantastic place. Ate at the bar service was perfect and the food outstanding cool location on Jones Street. Cheese bread is koo koo good as was the beef and salad. This is a must visit spot.

First Time, but not the Last

By Bill M |

My wife, client, daughter, and I celebrated #1 daughter's birthday at OSSO. A whole new experience for us from food to service. Enjoyed the calamari for an appetizer followed by bone-in rib eye steaks. The calamari was delicious, the the steaks. They were probably 2" thick by8 or 9", rare, cutable with a butter knife. Melted in your mount. The service matched the food, great!!! Definitely will be back.

Great traditional steak house

By Peter Jan R |

A high-end steakhouse like you would expect. High quality service and great food. Meat of extraordinary quality. Good seating wit some privacy. Great location at Nob Hill. Surely value for money.

Jurassic-sized Steaks

By Kimberly H |

I've been to Osso a few times now, but really wanted to mention an experience I had last night (6.16.17). We were at an event across the street at Grace Cathedral that was running late. We had a 9:15 reservation that we moved to 9:30 and then to 9:45. When I saw that perhaps even the 9:45 might not be a possibility, I called the restaurant to explain what was going on. Nate was SO incredibly kind and informed me the kitchen closed at 10:00 but if we could get ourselves there before 10:00, then we'd still be served. We got there at 9:55 and granted, with the glassed-in kitchen, every eye in there was looking our way like, "Are you kidding us?!?!" and yes, our server while not blatant in his, "Don't dawdle, this place is shutting down any minute," we could feel the pressure to keep it moving. And then, Nate came over to our table to ask how everything was and said, "Listen, slow down. Enjoy your meal. We're here for you all, so please take your time." Now THAT, kids is customer service! And then on top of that, he was kind enough to ask more about the event we attended across the street. Oh, and as for the food...this may sound like an odd favorite to have at a steakhouse, but OMG the roasted brussels sprouts and crispy potatoes are lick-the-plate good (but don't try licking the hotter than Hades cast iron skillet the 'taters come in). And yeah, the steaks are Jurassic-sized, so if you order anything other than the petite filet, you better not have eaten all day or be prepared to take some of it home.

Consider it for a SF Steak experience

By Patrick P |

We had planned to get reservations for one of the trendy steak places but concierge at Marriott Marquis steered us here. Tucked away across street from a cathedral on hill. Elegant environment and good service. Had bone in filet. Came as described medium Rare. Good steak. Good value.

Get the petite filet mignon!

By rjgarnold |

The petite filet mignon is some of the best I've ever had, but my friend had another cut, which wasn't as good. I would have given 5 stars for the overall, but there were a few glitches: we got there very early (5:30pm) because I had to be up early the next morning and, even though the restaurant was basically empty, they seated a family with a fussy baby right next to us. That said, they moved us without a problem. They also tried to give us incorrect sides and the dessert several times. Moreover, although the crab cakes were recommended on Yelp, and there was lots of crab, I didn't like the deep fried outside. That said, the art deco décor and very nice waiters, in addition to the very good food (listened to recommendations and ordered Brussel sprouts chips and twice over potatoes), would make me revisit this restaurant.

Our Mother Birthday

By Ivanya M |

We went to Osso for our mother 81st birthday celebration. Great atmosphere, great food and great service. Daniel our server was very nice, attentive and friendly. He gave us good suggestions about the food and side order. We were very happy.

BEST STEAK IN CALIFORNIA

By TheAlcalde |

Hands down the most flavorful steaks you can eat. The service was exquisite and knowledgeable about steaks, the cuts and how to best prepare the meat. Quiet location in Nob Hill which makes it perfect for a romantic getaway or business meeting.

Wow, this was the worst I can remember ever!

By Joel S |

I have to say this place was the worst dining experience I have ever experienced with a large group. There were 21 of us and I can honestly say no one had a good experience. This is a steakhouse and with a large group they had a fixed menu for the evening. Of course most of us had the steak as that was all the options we were given and a few had to make special requests for something different as they were vegetarians. The order took FOREVER to come and the servers just kept pouring us drinks (maybe this was what their business model, meaning get people happy on booze and everything else will be forgotten). I was quite surprised when my dinner finally showed up for 2 reasons. They never asked me how I liked my steak cooked (everyone’s came medium rare, like it or not) and the steak was the only thing on my large plate.....nothing else....not even garnish). They did bring side share plates of vegetables which were small and did not allow enough for each diner to have a reasonable portion or choice. ALL the food arrived stone cold including the filet mignon steaks and the vegetables were overcooked as well. By the time we received everything we were so hungry that most of us just ate our dinner as is. The few who sent theirs back to be properly cooked or warmed up were even more disappointed. The food showed up 15 minutes later and still not properly cooked. All I can say is wow! The management did virtually nothing to compensate for all the poor service and terrible experience. The bill was apparently quite high ( over $3,000) and no credits or even an apology to my knowledge. You kinda got the impression they just wanted to extract as much money as they could and did’t care if any of us ever returned. Not to worry....I know 21 people and all their friends who will never be back.

Great Steakhouse with Lots of Character

By JeniFord |

Love love LOVE Osso Steakhouse. Their service is great! The waiters are always fun and give great suggestions. The crab is my favorite with that garlic and butter sauce. YUM! An appetizer I highly suggest is the Chorizo Cheese Bread! It is completely addicting that you may want to order two :) Great for all to enjoy.

What amazing dinner

By DANIELSUDAR |

I had the most wonderful diner here. We came in earlier and the host sat us right away. Amazing set up and romantic ambiance. The staffs were very attentive. All the staffs were on point. Thank you for making our evening wonderful . The food was excellent.we love the cocktail too. This was our second time here and we always love it. One of my favorite spot in the city. The steak just melt in your mouth . Sooooo good. Highly recommend , we will be back soon . Thank you

Long wait but worth it

By MarPriMar |

Just went there last weekend. Made a reservation and got there on time. Ended up waiting in the bar for about an hour as the previous patrons seemed to be taking longer than anticipated. While not unprecedented, many other customers were in the same situation and there was simply not a lot of space in the bar (with only 2 barmen) to actually take care of the crowd. A bit rough with some people leaving disappointed. When we were actually brought to our table, we had a great experience. Great and fast service. We started with the chorizo bread. Very original and tasty. Steaks were divine. I went for the bone-in NY and my wife for the tenderloin. Menu has many other options besides steaks but we stayed classic. Not a cheap place but overall, worth it.

Food was great | very noisy restaurant

By MrsBoateng |

The food was delicious, service was great, however this restaurant is incredibly noisy, almost uncomfortable noisy. When we dine at a fine restaurant, you expect certain etiquette and we feel this restaurant was not to our standards (as far as noise is concerned). Overall it was a good experience, the food was served within a timely manner and cooked to our liking.

May as well go to Outback Steakhouse

By Tom M |

Nice service, pretty place, bought the bone in NY strip…..could have got the same thing at Outback Steakhouse. Less than 3/4” thick. Simply an embarrassment.

Great Steak

By Engbandh |

The steak was beautiful and succulent. Creamed corn really good. Service was good. The restaurant itself is a bit tired.

Amazing steaks

By cpacraig |

When to dinner with friends visiting from the U.K. who wanted a good steak. Tried here based on reviews and location. It was utterly fantastic! Staff is also amazing. Will come here again for sure!

Delicious meal!

By TGIF_pov |

The food here is fantastic! Get the bread, especially if it's straight out of the oven. I also highly recommend the fried veggies! The best thing that we ordered!

Excellent Steakhouse

By SF |

Excellent service and beautiful place. We enjoyed an excellent ribeye steak - an incredibly juicy, tender, and flavorful steak with a buttery taste and a great texture.

All Around Excellence

By Kathleen A |

We visited this wonderful Steakhouse on Christmas where I expected to see delays and mishaps. We were happily relieved of those worries the moment we stepped into the restaurant. It has a fresh look but reminiscent of steakhouses of old. The greeting staff was friendly and sat us right away! Our waiter was attentive without hovering and we enjoyed the most mouthwatering steak dishes! The steaks were of the melt in your mouth variety of steaks that only a great restaurant can deliver and deliver they did! In addition the side dishes were very tasty as well! This restaurant is on our list to return to next time we are in SF!

Wow, excellent steak !

By Sharon R |

Great restaurant, friendly waiters. The price compares to Harris' everything is a la carte, so prepare to spend $100 per person without alcohol. I loved the steak ! (Way better than Harris'--at least that's my opinion.) They have valet service to relieve the stress of parking.

Special Occassion Place

By Ron V |

The best filet in the City is the only thing I can say and nothing else needs to be said. When we want an outstanding steak this is where we go.

Very Accommodating for Business Group

By Peter S |

Ate here during a business trip. There were about 20 of us around the table that was set up for us on short notice. San Francisco prices are steep, but that's what we expected. Food and service were top-notch! The steaks and seafood were absolutely awesome! Served at the proper temperatures. Ala carte side dishes were excellent and large enough to share.

Meal ok, Service is catastrophe - NoGo

By fernandoe768 |

We where 12 people who had dinner at Osso's, th waither did make a listless face since beginning. As apetizer two of us ordered a plate with 6 oyters, the oysters was so small that it seemed to be 3rd choice, During dinner My collegue ordered a rib-eye medium-rare and received well cocked. This shouldn't, but can happen, but a No-Go is that the waither insisted saying that it was medium-rare. it was even more cocked as my medium-well peace of meat, Ather getting angry the waither said "I did not cock the meat+ and asked if he has to remake it. During dinner some drinks arrived other don't. I asked for a short coffe which the waither confirmed but received the same as the others. And finally when we had to pay, the waither informed us that we couldn't split the bill "they don't do it" but he could charge up six different credit cards. No one informed us about it. The arrogance of the waither di make the evening a flog. Overall the meal was ok,but the Service is a catastrophe

Exceeded expectations both with service and food

By Wayne J |

A great evening starting with drinks at the bar. The bartenders were friendly and made great drinks. The food menu was very diverse. I’ve eaten at many high-end steakhouses over the years and for me the steak here was the best. I did not find the price is unacceptable for what you got. A special evening type of environment so enjoy it.

Clubby and civilized

By Laurel G |

Noticed that another review pronounced the decor here “outdated,” which presumably means it lacks the requisite combo du jour of concrete surfaces, deafening acoustics, and midcentury-meets-distressed barn furnishings. There is nothing tired or outdated about this restaurant — the ambiance is warm, comfortable, conducive to conversation and very pleasing to the eye....what fine dining SHOULD be but too often isn’t. Love the cozy art deco lighting that surrounds the bar and booths. I hope this place represents the beginning of a trend back to civilized dining. The steakhouse menu is simple but elegant, the culinary equivalent of a classic little black dress. I enjoyed a perfect gimlet, a terrific ceasar, and a petite filet that had to be one of the best steaks I’ve ever eaten. Can’t wait to return.

Dinner

By Joseph G |

The service was friendly, but they were very busy that night and we had to ask for more water. It also took a long time to get drinks. I was disappointed in the steak. My wife and I split the huge Rib Eye steak. It was huge but needed more seasoning.

Solid steak house

By HandsomePete |

My family of five got what we expected...good appetizers (calamari), very good petite filet mignon (and vegetable platter for my vegetarian wife), and excellent sides (creamed spinach, two potato varieties), good wine, good bourbon. We were initially served two of the same potato sides, and when we pointed it out to the server, the correct one was brought almost immediately. Our waiver provided excellent service. The bathroom is down one flight via elevator, but that's not going to keep me from returning.

Very, very good

By Bob H |

Great food, great service. The steakhouse is traditional in its decor and with the box tie wearing waiters but it does not feel stuffy or stiff. Highly recommended. Prices seem about average for a SF steakhouse - expensive by other standards!

Osso made a great 48th anniversary

By Bill M |

My wife and I celebrated our 48th anniversary dining at Osso for dinner. As usual, the food and service were fabulous. We totally enjoy dining at Osso on our special occasions. It just highlights a special event.

Expensive dinner

By MelB_1384 |

Our bill for a party of 3 was over $300. The steak wasn't out of this world. Not much of an impressive decor. They offer valet. I wouldn't recommend.

My first taste of SF

By TravelVitoYYC |

Hungry on my first night in San Francisco I happened upon Osso a few blocks from my hotel. I looked over the menu and the filet mignon cheesesteak looked just right. Even though I had it to go it was absolutely delicious. The combination of flavours on what I believe was sourdough bread was perfect. I'll probably go back before the end of my trip. The food and service was great.

The best ribeye steak ever

By Mark_Parkville_MO |

This is a very nice steakhouse, with great style. The staff is top notch and very professional. Two of us got the bone-in ribeye and one got the bone-in filet mignon. This was absolutely the best bone-in ribeye that I have ever had !!! The only thing that I was not a fan of, was that everything was a la carte. I would definitely go back again.

Belated Birthday Celebration

By Carol S |

Enjoyed a wonderful dining experience at Osso Steakhouse. Jack, our waiter, added a delightful addition to our conversation, answering all our questions with absolute candor . Their bone in filet was cooked to perfection, my salad was large enough to share with my husband,,and the white chocolate sorbet was a pleasure to the taste buds. Definitely will return next visit to San Francisco.

ambivalent impression

By Hanspeter B |

I was in the restaurant with some friends. As an appetizer we had a salad and some yellow tuna carpaccio. The salad was OK beside the long black hear inside. The carpaccio was unpalatable. The color was gray and it had a strange fish smell and some fish bones inside which is very unusual for a tuna carpaccio. The waiter had an unpleasant body odour. The Osso filet was OK, but wen it was served our apetite was already gone. The bottle of an expensive wine was removed from the table along with the plates even before we were able to empty it. As a little compensation, the chief of the Restaurant offered us a desert for free. As a summary, this place is disgusting and overpriced, I will personally never go back.

Shim L

By Shim L |

What a gem, business dinner for a party of six, and everything was handled perfectly. Cocktails were Manhattens and all enjoyed them. Shared appetizers pot stickers were fantastic, calamari with a spin on tartar sauce, and yellowfin carpaccio, delicious. Entrees were mostly steaks from bone in porterhouse to petit filet, cooked to perfection for five diners. I choose the Sea Bass and it was special, fantastic sauce and not dried out like some places. Several sides to share consensus was the Brussels sprouts were great, mac and cheese very tasty, twice baked potato was a hit. Finally dessert and all had the salted carmel crunch cake, very good. Service was impeccable and I will plan on visiting Ozzo again to sample some other items. A bit pricey but no problem when everything is exceptional. Cheers👏

This is a hidden charm in SF

By Jo Ann S |

We saw this restaurant on a local PBS station doing restaurant reviews and bookmarked it on our phones. Had the opportunity to go there last night when we were in the city. I have to say we were really impressed and wished we had a couple more people with us to share/try some of the creative appetizers. My husband and I ended up splitting a steak, as we did want to try try a couple of the sides. I would definitely recommend it as at "steak" destinion in SF. Sad I didn't take pictures. Service was great! Just the perfect pace.

Good meat

By Christiane H |

We made a reservation for the last seating so the service was not so great but the food was very good. We shared a good cesar salad and a rib eye with crispy potatos. Everything was well done. The service could be better and the meat could have come sliced to the table.

EXCELLENT all around

By brewerhouse |

This restaurant was in my son's apartment building so it was a must try. I love food and have eaten all around the world and I have to say that this was GREAT! The sea bass was simply the best I have EVER had hands down and the filet was remarkable! Service was great and it is HIGHLY recommended by this traveler!

This was an outstanding restaurant. The service and food were excellent. I would recommend reservations as it is very busy.

Finally an Excellent Steak Place in SF

By Marty_Darte |

SF has never been known for steak and hasn't had much in the way of excellent steakhouses. Osso seems to fill the bill. The cocktails were well made, the service was great, and the steak was delicious and perfectly cooked to our specifications (Pittsburgh style). We can't wait to return!

New Years Eve. Booked in advance from overseas. Oh Dear!

By FamilyTravelJunkkie |

We were visiting SFO from overseas for New Years and researched researched researched. We decided to visit Osso, have a great meal, and watch the fireworks from Nob Hill. A big group. Lots of planning. Very excited. But, it didn't go to plan. Excuse 1. It was NYE and very busy. Excuse 2. We were a group of 9 so a bit hard to manage for the staff maybe? Excuse 3. It was a late booking. Possibly everyone was exhausted. Not sure. But, when we arrived we were taken to our table reasonably promptly. Good start. We ordered drinks and the girls went to the restroom. A disgrace. No paper. Mess everywhere. I called the waiter to say "OMG, you should get someone to quickly clean it up". His response was "the restrooms are owned by the apartment building, not us. So we dont maintain them". Wow. OK. So then we ordered our appetizers and our entrees. One of our group was a vegetarian. She asked for options she could eat. The response was "its a steakhouse. OK. So steak". I talked her through some ideas and we got her sorted using salads and appetizers. The rest of us were famished so a big order. When the appetizers came one was missing. We waited and waited. Then we asked the server. He said someone from one of the other tables had stolen our appetizer so we should start and he will get a new one going. I said OK but please delay the entrees. We cant have our mains coming out to 8 guests while the other is eating their appetizer. No problem sir. Of course, the opposite happened. The missing appetizer arrived with everyones entrees. I said no. Please send them back and the server said they will just get cold. I asked for a manager. He came. He was professional. He promised to compensate us financially and he did. While he was trying to help us our server kept talking over him and saying the food is going cold. I honestly cant even remember what the food tasted like. I am sure it was OK or I would remember. But it felt like an episode of faulty towers. Sorry but it's true. I don't think I have ever been so disappointed in a special night out.

Gods traditional steak place

By Pete1970Sing |

We came here as a family for my birthday while visiting SF. Had to wait for our reserved timing for around 15 mins but once in service was efficient even if not overly friendly. Steaks were pretty good and enjoyed a recommended Californian cab sav.

Interesting But Disappointing

By Dr V |

The restaurant, at the the top of Nob Hill sounded great online. However the experience was disappointing. The series was very poor (several of the waiters were fighting amongst each other right in front of us). The food was mediocre and certainly not equivalent wit the prizes they charge.

Fantastic Steakhouse WOW - Steak lover's heaven

By Dirk H |

We visited Osso Steakhouse on a recommendation of a local friend. WOW!! The Steak lovers heaven. The Maitre d' hotel greeted us and lead us to the bar for some pre-dinner drinks. All in a very friendly and attentive atmosphere. After taking our table, our waiter Michael, (need to be mentioned for exceptional service), looked after us and his service and friendly attitude made the evening really a big experience. We had the best steak (Eye Filet)! The wine selection in this restaurant is great and again, Michael picked the right wine (red) for us to enjoy with our steak. Can not fault this place. Worth every penny! Must visit if you are a serious steak lover and appreciate good old fashioned service.

Better than average..

By lmoritz1 |

Stick with the steaks! We ordered lots of items and the steak was the best. Very tender and well prepared. The service was attentive if humorless. We where a table of six women and I think our waiter found us confusing. Good location for Nob hill. The deserts we also excellent.

Casual meal before concert at The Masonic

By Tanya Borghello |

Over priced steak that was just ok. Atmosphere and waiter were amazing. Good just ok. Disappointed there wasn’t a smaller steak option.

Excellent steak and service

By Mike A |

This place is not cheap but served up the best steak I have had in the US. It looks a bit formal from the outside but dress code is casual and the service very friendly and informal. The twice baked potato is also fantastic. Thank you for a super dinner!

So-so is more like it

By frtw |

It started off well. My date and I arrived over 90 minutes before a show we were attending next door at Masonic Auditorium. We got our drinks and soup/salad. Then it fell apart. Our entrees (Filet Mignon for her; Baked Salmon for me) took over an hour to arrive! Wait staff knew we were going to the show and kept apologizing. We got our food and literally wolfed it down, not enjoying it. Dessert arrived: we did the same. The staff cut the check in half and we still made it to our show. But there's no excuse for taking as long as they did to get our food (people who arrived later than us were served before us). Its location in the City is great, but we still cannot recommend it after what happened. Dining out is supposed to be enjoyable, not a rush job.

Overpriced small portions poorly prepared with poor service. An all around loser.

By RMFSanFrancisco |

Consistently poor food served to a party of three, in small portions at overvalued prices with totally confused service. Shocked that they have survived in a competitive restaurant market.

Steak so so

By MTDN |

Dinner before event next door. It looks clean place, cozy, although outdated furniture, but is ok, it all comes down to food. From the menu and price, I was expecting a great steak. Both the bone-in ribeye were nice thick, but very hard and lots of tendons, must have been a very old cow :). Served in a high edge pan that makes it very hard to cut, in addition to be hard in the first place. Not enjoyed at all. Bread was good. Wine at 2.5x retail, which is high for this soso place. Overall, disappointed, we love steaks and don’t mind paying good for it. Last week we were at Harry’s, a world apart for steak quality. Service ok, apart from annoying servers continuously asking if we are done to clean table. Must be used to people finishing eating half steak away :).

Can't beat a bit of steak!

By b.s05 |

We came on a Friday night and expected it to be packed out. It was nicely busy. The waiters weren't running around which was good. Service was either very attentive or a bit sketchy. Whilst placing our order we ordered some bread but it never came... He didn't even bat an eyelid when he walked past us. We had the 28oz porterhouse between us and a couple of sides. Beautifully cooked! The only niggle I'd say in regards to the sides was the lack of potato choices. I would have liked another 1 or 2 options. Also maybe a sauce option. Even if it's not on the menu. Don't flat down refuse it...

What a treat!

By Tom W. |

My wife and I wanted to try a steakhouse in San Francisco but were unfamiliar with them. I asked the concierge at our hotel and he suggested Osso, and made our reservations. We started with drinks from the bar and they were well-made. We split a petit fillet, crispy potatoes and a Caesar salad and blown-away by how wonderfully tasty everything was! The au jus that came with the filet was the best we've ever tasted, and the service was superb all night long. Next trip to SF and we'll definitely dine there again.

Great Old Time Dinning Room

By Rodney C |

Just a really nice steak cooked to order. The fish was cooked just right, not overcooked. Service really good, valet parking. It's not a noisy place.

Fantastic food, mixed service

By Andy F |

My wife and I were here on a Saturday night. It's conveniently located directly across the street from Grace Cathedral, where we had concert tickets. The food was fantastic. the petite filet mignon and the sauce was fantastic. And the joe's special burger was very good (heads up: it's chopped steak, not ground beef). And the two sides, brussels sprouts chips and crispy roasted potatoes, were outstanding. Service was good, but not on par with the food. Seating was slow, even at 6:00pm when most tables were empty, and a line of waiting guests was building up in the doorway. After we ordered, it took at least five minutes before someone brought out water. While you're waiting for your meal, bread is available for only .95 cents. But be warned, you need to order it. It does not automatically show up after you place your order.

Steak and Style: What to Expect at Osso

By MrGaucho1987 |

We wanted to try something new so we hit Osso after a show downtown. We are very glad we discovered Osso Food: Big steak. Big big steak. All the apps were fine. As expected. But the steak was the star. Good flavor, hot and generous portions. Ambiance: Interesting Art Deco. Very clean and crisp. If you like something a little different and enjoy an Art Deco theme you’ll love it. Service: Classic old school steak house. Uniformed waiters. Class service with the slightest touch of sassy attitude. We felt very welcomed. Price: Steak in SF. Bring your wallet. Given the service location and food, you’d expect to pay more. The prices make this more of a special occasion place...but we’ll return. No question.

Excellent food!

By cttagent |

Majority of dishes are seafood related. There is a handful of steak items, expensive, but excellent taste. You may end up taking some with you when done. If we end up in the area again, I definitely saw a dessert or two that I would like to try.

Classy and great food!

By LaurieAllan |

You'll need a reservation for this wonderful dining experience. Very well located, Osso has a delightful wine list to choose from, and the menu has everything you could ask for, especially great steaks! A bit in the pricy side but well worth it. Our waiter was very helpful and his professionalism added to this memorable experience. This romantic restaurant exceeded all of our expectations and most certainly deserves recommendation. Incredible bone-in Filet

By BendRNA |

Had a great meal at the Osso Steakhouse up on nob hill. Service was incredible and the food was osso good! We both had filets, I had the bone-in which was incredible - cooked to perfection. My wife's filet was so tender she didn't even need a knife. Definitely a splurge but worth it
