Wonderful evening!

By rossdmd |

We really enjoyed our daughter taking us to her favorite restaurant. No wonder it is her favorite. The gnocchi was fantastic, but we sure enjoyed everything that was put in front of us. Impeccable service was so appreciated. True professionals that are proud of their restaurant. Thanks so much. A great wine selection, though some high end selections. Food was very reasonable and worth every penny. We arrived later in the evening on a Sunday, so there wasn't much of a crowd at all. It would be worth the wait on a busy night.

Small but Very Good food and Service

By Kent C |

Went with a group of 12 and everyone ordered something different. Everything I tried was good, from the Pizza to the Pork chops. We had a great waiter who serviced our table of 12 very efficiently. Excellent wine list, with wine of the day, by the glass or Bottle. We never felt rushed. Will go back.

Great!

We used to go to Mamma's on a regular basis.. But somehow everything we ordered started to taste over salted. So we stopped going.LAST REVIEW.. We were taken to Mammas last night and wow the food was fantastic..I had the Osso Buco with Gnocchi best dish I have ever had there..Look forward to going back....

Delicious Italian Food on Melrose

By Two Guyz One World |

A great date night place to taste some great authentic Italian food. Located near Melrose and Larchmont you will not be disappointed in spending an evening here. The staff is friendly and the food will get you wanting more.

Pasta is great. Others are ok

By elsie C. |

Osteria Mamma is located at the corner on Melrose. Not a big restaurant but it has a full bar. Staff are friendly. We ordered a Pepperoni pizza, Gnocchi Ai Porcini, filet mignon and fried veal chop. Gnocchi ai Porcini tasted exceptional. So delicious. As for other dishes, they were just okay. Must try Affogato, it's vanilla gelato with espresso and homemade whipped cream. Valet parking is $8 or find street parking.

An Italian Standard

By E9N20 |

I love my neighborhood restaurant. Friendly staff and fantastic food. Last night we tried a new wine (need to go back and find out the name) because it was bold, heavy and red ! My Fritto misto was perfectly fried, light and tasty. One of the specials (Eggplant Parmesan) was cooked perfectly and tasted wonderful. My carbonara was so good and I just kept laughing out loud happy. Oh can't forget the fresh greens with shaved parm. Just delish... see you soon Mamma...

Lunch - lovely!

By justtojess |

Osteria Mamma has a small, intimate dining room that is elegantly but casually decorated. The staff makes you feel welcome and is attentive without being suffocating. And the food - yum! My friend gets the carbonara everywhere he goes and said this was one of the best he's had, and my Papardelle allo Zafferano (a saffron pasta with mushroom cream sauce) was lovely! Not too heavy, which I was worried about. Looking forward to going back for dinner!

not so great

By minsky c |

nice place, corner restaurant. the staff was unconcerned and sometimes attentive. The food wasn't so good, a little heavy and not so tasty. disappointed. CM

It was okay

By Bacong Family |

We yelped it and ordered all the top recommended dishes. Our family didn't really care for it. Not impress with the taste.

My favorite neighborhood Italian restaurant

By Randi R |

I've eaten dinner here, maybe, 14 or 15 times and the food is always outstanding. It's a small neighborhood restaurant on Melrose, fairly close to Larchmont Village. The menu is big, there are always good specials, there is an extensive list of Italian wines, the service is always good. My favorite dishes are the fungolata (mushroom salad), any of their salads with Buratta, their homemade pastas, and their red sauce which is a dipping sauce for the bread. But, honestly, everything is very delicious here. The decor is only so-so; it's a 2 room restaurant fronting on a busy street, there are photos of Mamma all around. But, definitely, make a reservation and go for the fabulous cooking!

Fantastic!

By julie b |

An evening at Osteria Mamma is like being transported to Italy. Very authentic Italian cuisine. I think this is the best kept secret in Los Angeles. Just like the local restaurants in the Italian countryside, you have a variety of people dining at the restaurant...from nearby families that walk to the restaurant, to business professionals from the nearby studios, two couples that want to have a romantic evening, the food is what brings everyone together. This is truly a gem of a restaurant with the most amazing food. You will not be disappointed.

Very nice, professional, and delicious

By dance4fun2 |

Four of us ate here on a Saturday night. We got there early, otherwise it is crowded-others know the fine caliber of the recipes and cooking. Staff was very nice. I called ahead to make sure that my food allergies could be accommodated. As I ordered just plain grilled salmon and steamed vegetables, I had no problems. However, if you need to alter anything else, it is not possible. They do not do substitutions at all. You cannot order a pasta without some ingredient (such as a particular cheese or a specific vegetable). I do understand why: their recipes are absolutely delicious! The taste of the dishes is outstanding and they do not want to mess with something truly unique and delicious. Entree portions are on the small size, but excellent! I would order a salad and/or soup to accompany your main dish. It was enjoyable.

Cozy Italian Meal

By tourist16 |

We were looking for a place that was open at 4pm and found this place. We were greeted right away and shown to our table. We decided to share the squid ink pasta with shrimps and a pizza with prosciutto, arugula and Burrata cheese. The pasta was perfectly cooked and the pizza was delicious. They definitely did not skimp on the San Danielle prosciutto either. We also shared the tiramisu. The staff was friendly and checked on us several times to make sure we had everything we wanted. Definitely a place to go to again.

Good food poor service

By safetyass |

Spilled water on us, then walked away in the middle of our order, then we had to get a server to refill our 6 empty water glasses. Our waiter finally returned for desert order. Would go elsewhere.

Authentic Italian near Larchmont

By Michael B |

My go to place for no nonsense delicious Italian food in Los Angeles. The lasagna and tagliatelle bolognese are delcious, don't forget the tiramisu. Reservations usually needed but they've squeezed in a party of two last minute, too!

Mamma Mia

By terrys143143 |

Fantastic kitchen, food to be eaten slowly and savored. I have been there at least 10 times and this review is well overdue. The gnocchi is heavenly. Make sure to leave room for the frozen limoncello dessert, you may come back just for that.

Great food.

By goinforit |

Recommended. if you’re looking for excellent Italian food, pretty reasonably priced, it would be tough to do better that here. Not stuffy, just real good food.

Give this place a try....

By Romaguy333 |

If you are visiting LA, do yourself a favor and try Osteria Mamma. You will be hard pressed to find better or more authentic Italian food anywhere. Our server, Emanuela was a delight. I relished the opportunity to exercise my Italian with Emanuela who graciously provided me with a little history of the restaurant, her family and her fairly recent move to the States. The bruschetta was wonderful, the risotto with crab outstanding and a veal scallopine just like my own Mamma used to make. The desserts were equally pleasing. The panna cotta, torta di limone and gelato were all winners on our visit. This place is well worth your time and your appetite.

Good food but LOUD

By Jeffrey J |

I have been there a few times and while the food is very good - I will not return. It was so loud that I had a to yell to be heard by my friends, We left as soon as we finished eating as we were just staring at each other and couldn't talk.

Wow!!! A real Italian restaurant in Hollywood, amazing food!

By ManuLLosangeles |

I have to say that this restaurant is one of the very few where I can say I had real Italian food! Sooooo good! The polio, octopus salad, is so soft and tasty, the fried shrimp, calamari, and zucchini, fritto misto, is one of the best that I ever had, ever! And also very good salads, with blue cheese, pear and caramelized walnuts, and more. La pasta is handmade from the mother of the owner, an Italian lady from Padova. It cannot get better than that... They even make lasagna from scratch and the dessert selection is wide, and the desserts delicious! Amazing Tiramisu.... Give it a try, and you will be back soon!

Neighborhood Gem

By Simon M |

Osteria Mamma is a fantastic local Italian restaurant in the Larchmont/Hancock Park area. The food is authentic and always top notch. The waiters are efficient and the service is very good. It's not the best Italian food in Los Angeles, but it is always consistent and worthy of a return visit.

Italian friends say best in LA

By Terri J |

We had grilled calamari to start - excellent! Bartender recommended a wine that went well with four different dishes. We ordered specials that everyone tasted and declared delicious. Service was outstanding.

Great Food - Horrendous Service

By Cara C |

My boyfriend and I came here late one Friday night on a recommendation from a colleague. We made a reservation and had no problem getting seating right away from a very nicely dressed hostess. The restaurant itself was nice. It was a bit noisy inside, a little hard to hear one another talk. The entire menu looked delicious, and our food was incredible. I ordered the vegetarian lasagna which was INCREDIBLE, and my boyfriend had the pumpkin ravioli which was also delicious. However, our waitress was absolutely horrible. She had a friend at the bar, and she was clearly more concerned about eating and hanging out with him, than she was with checking on us to see if we needed anything. We had to flag down multiple other servers and busboys to request anything (even to get the check). We did manager to order dessert through her - a delicious tiramisu. However, we realized after about half an hour of waiting that other tables that had ordered after us had gotten their desserts, and when we were finally able to get her attention again, she rolled her eyes at us as if it was somehow our fault and offered no explanation or apology. Everyone else in the restaurant was lovely, but she must have been having a REALLY bad day. I would definitely order food from here, but not sure I would dine in again.

Finally like home

By Gabriele B |

How to feel in Italy We stayed for dinner for 2 nights, tried different dishes and always with great results. Pampered by luigi, a real Oste and Mrs Cristina , the hostess. Highly recommended to everyone, especially if you want to try the authentic flavors of our cuisine in Los Angeles. Bravo and compliments The 3 boys from Varese: Gabriele Riccardo and Matteo

Great spot for an early family dinner

By RetiredinMD2013 |

We were able to get a reservation for dinner at Osteria Momma Saturday afternoon for a 6 pm family dinner. Everyone in the family (two seniors, two adults, a preteen and a teenager) found salads, entrees and desserts to love. We were seated on the outdoor heated patio. The patio was uncrowded until near dessert time, and noise was not a problem even when the patio filled up.

Very good food

By Sandrihabrasil |

Loved the ambient and the food is great! Went there twice already in both times i were in town. The food is great, the price is okay! Great service as well.

Authentic flavors, fair prices

By Dan K |

Our shared burrata salad featuring tomatoes confit, with dabs of Saba (uncommon, a would-be balsamic interrupted early in its creation), and a pasta with guanciale (cured, from pork jowl) tomato sauce told me these people are serious about Italian cooking. Nearby, thirty-ish couples were all ordering a hill of calamari and sharing, an economical way to go. We love the justly famous Osteria Mozza down the street, but this becomes our go-to neighborhood place. Great flavors, service fine, a touch hectic in a good way, you can hear yourselves talk, and prices on point.

Hidden Gem- Italian Restaurant

By Eleanor S |

This place is such a gem. Its a cute quaint place. Great for a small business meeting or romantic night. Fabulous service and an extensive Italian wine list. Even the house wine was fabulous. Will be back for more business meetings.

Perfect

By dtwn1971 |

Authentic Italian cuisine with charming ambiance. The grilled octopus (Polipolata) is the best I’ve ever enjoyed. Great service and an ideal restaurant to spot celebrities. Just down Melrose Avenue from Paramount Studios.

High hopes but low review because ......

By MakeMyBed |

We had high hopes for this restaurant as it came highly recommended and we all know the feeling of anticipation before going to dinner, the ride over there, sitting down, having your first sip of wine and waiting for this first dish to arrive and you just can't wait till the second comes as the first one was sooo good, well this did not happen here……. the atmosphere inside the restaurant was energetic but it was a windy night and some tables are right in the path of the doorway where they sat us so we had to move a few times as it was freezing. the red wine was good the first dish : Gorgo Magno baby wild arugula, caramelized walnuts, brown pear, gorgonzola dressing this sounds delicious right ? WRONG ! it had absolutely no flavor unless you call the few clumps of cheese thrown in or the 2 tiny slices of pear were flavor full , did not find any walnuts come to think of it... our main dishes: margarita pizza and the special of the day : lasagna with meat sauce we are 96 % sure this pizza came out of a box ( maybe Costco?) , it tasted like cardboard with some tomato sauce, again no flavor the lasagna was porridge like, also no flavor and so overcooked ….. So this dinner for 2 was $75 and so disappointing….. there are so many great Italian restaurants in town we just don't understand what people like about this one, how difficult is it to make a nice tasting salad , a great pizza or a nice lasagna ?

Nice Option

By WonderWander |

I'm gluten free and was craving Italian food. This place will make nearly all of their pasta dishes with gluten-free pasta. I had the arugula pesto with spaghetti, and it was very good. My friends had the lasagna and pizza (both w/ gluten) and seemed to be extremely happy. Plus, a very nice staff.

Excellent Italian cuisine

By tudomany |

A family restaurant near Paramount Studios. Excellent friendly service and some of the best Italian food I have ever eaten, as good as any meal I've had in Italy. The service is also very good. Not particularly noisy so we could talk. Unpretentious atmosphere. A number of vegetarian choices on the menu. I certainly hope to eat there again the next time I am in Los Angeles

A Gem

By Carlos C |

Nothing to say all dishes amazing!! AND PET FRIENDLY Lovely excellent food place!, an amazing quality price ratio ENJOY!

Superficially classy

By Jonoviech L |

This is probably the worst Italian restaurant we've encountered as travellers. We chose to dine at this well-atmosphered restaurant because of BuzzFeed. Upon entry, we were not greeted, nor were we seated immediately. The available staff all looked at us and were reluctant to serve us. (Were they discriminating a group of asians?) After we were seated, they finally took our order half an hour later (by then we were hangry). Their menu claimed authentic Italian food, which was not completely true. One of us had ordered White Wine Clam Pasta, but what we received was olive oil soaked pasta. Let me tell you, it was a broth of olive oil in the plate. The presentation was great, but the quality of the food was not truly an authentic experience. Lastly, we all ordered our separate pastas and none of us were full. Considering the price we were paying ($21USD/plate) the portion was rather small.

Super recommended!

By Deborah G |

Very nice and nice restaurant, very nice staff. Great service. We ate very well, just like being in Italy. A real discovery!

Great Fantastic Food!

By stevieblv |

It was a suggestion of a local, it paid off! What a find.... The wine list was bountiful! The food took me to Italy! I wanted a great place, not a tourist trap... This place is perfect... I had the carbonara linguine, The pizza fantastic! I truly give the spot five stars!

Traditional Italian food in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere

By gcjcRossdhu |

We found Osteria Mamma around the corner from our holiday rental in a quieter part of Melrose Ave and it soon became our local. Fabulous food and a great atmosphere, the staff are more than helpful. It also serves gluten free alternatives all courses. A real find!

My favorite Italian in LA

Simply Flawless! Best Italian for Italians!

By GP-USA |

Being Born and raised in Italy till my late 20s. I cook myself and I'm definitely hard to please with food (basically a Pain in.. ). The background is I do not care about environment, babies, loud patrons etc. I just pay attention to the one thing the FOOD. Osteria Mamma is the most authentic Italian restaurant in LA, period. Everything is handmade with fresh ingredients wisely mixed together to tast just perfect. The recipes are excellent and the execution is flawless. I usually let the host take care of me for both food and wine, never had a dish i did not like, and never felt i overpaid. Today I went there with other 5 Italian fellows all Italians temporary visiting and spreading from North to South of the country. We eat comunal style: Antipasti: ---- Served with a Demi-sec champagne - Crostini Prosciutto & Burrata with truffled oil and porcini - Frittura mista di pesce - Insalata di Polpo con sedano e pomodori freschi (Octopus Salad with celery and Heirloom Tomatos) Primi: ------ Served with Lucente Frescobaldi - Gnocchi ai Funghi Porcini - Tagliatelle alle erbe aromatiche con ragout di bosco - Gramigna Fresca with dried tomato and Ricotta salata - Black gramigna with Crab - Risotto rice with Funghi porcini e pomodorini freschi. Secondi: ----- Served with Barbaresco DOCG del Piemonte - Filet Mignon with Potato and Bell Pepper Casserole - Lam Rack with Veggies in Fricassea Dolci: ---- Served with Moscato d'Asti - Assortment of Crostate and Panna cotta. Other BEVERAGES: - Water still and sparkling - Espresso - Limoncello We could not stop eating. No Dish had a flaw, and was really hard even trying to rank them. It is not an Overstatement to say that this is the best place, for Italians, to eat Italian in Los Angeles.

Great restaurant!

By Roxana D |

Excelente food, authentic Italian, awesome service. This is a small restaurant so you need to make reservations, it gets really busy. The price is just right!

An average...

By SJessica522 |

We ordered Frittura Mista as appetizer. It is really really good!!!! The calamari and shrimp is amazingly cooked!!! Love it!!!! BUT, the Gnocchi I ordered is a little bit over cooked. It's way too soft than normal ones. And the LIGHT cream sauce is really light..... The Roberto pizza my friend ordered is just a ok too... It's pretty light... The tiramisu is pretty good though. Except it is a little bit too juicy. Our server is really friendly and patient. We love his service!!!

Cute little restaurant

By Sarah W |

This is a very cute cozy Italian restaurant in the neighborhood. Fresh pasta, great food and friendly environment. Nice place to go if you want to sit down and enjoy it with friends.

Fine for the neighborhood

By nurealam |

This is a very comfortable, neighborhood Italian restaurant. The menu is good tho unremarkable. Wine list is very acceptable. This is fine if you live nearby. I suspect for those who live in LA they will know many Italian restaurants that are far better in terms of cuisine than Mamma but this is a very easy place to go out to on any night of the week. Valet parking (at a price).

Try the gnocchi!!

By Vicki K |

This time we made a reservation - our second visit to Osteria Mamma. We sat outside at the same lovely table and luckily had the same waiter - who remembered us! This time we took a look at the wine list - and noticed that they carry three - count 'em, 3! - amarone. Our favorite wine from the Veneto area of Italy. We just had to do it. We tried the 2009. While you can never go wrong with an amarone, this one was smooth, and fruity - just the way we like it! We ordered the salad and lobster soup to start. The salad was good, but the soup was so creamy and delicious! It had lots of tiny pieces of lobster in keeping with the creaminess, I guess, and it was so, so very good! Joey ordered the ravioli and I ordered the gnocchi with cream sauce, peas, ham and mushrooms. Joey liked his until he tasted mine. ; ) The gnocchi was amazing! And filling! So much so that, to be kind, I let Joey finish my dish. Because the waiter knew that I don't eat wheat, he pointed out a dessert that was gluten-free (darn him) but I had to be polite - so I ordered it: hazelnut crusted ice cream. And it was another winner. Joey's chocolate and pear tart didn't measure up to my dessert, he said, but I couldn't test it out - because of the wheat. All in all, I would say this is a restaurant you should try if you are in the area.

Little gem

By Goldlox1969 |

We recently dined here in jan 2013. What a gem. While the decor is a little ordinary, the food and service were excellent. We had a variety of dishes and couldn't fault any of them. Every suburb needs an Osteria like this for good honest tasty food. Prices were quite acceptable too. Well worth a visit.

Foods a Five, Marks Off for Prices and Decor

By Rambling Lawyer |

On Melrose, just off Larchmont, Osteria Mamma is a great spot to take meetings with those from Hollywood and vicinity. (Walking distance to the Paramount lot.) Traditional northern Italian cuisine well-prepared, fresh ingredients deserves praise the restaurant seems to receive from other reviewers., Prices are a tad high and the decor is somewhat Bohemian - especially given the prices. Still, food is worth it and I for one give it "two thumbs up".

Excellent Quality food

By TR218 |

Spent the evening with my wife, son celebrating my daughter-in-laws birthday. The salads, food, wine and bread was fantastic. Hostess was very accommodating it was a Saturday evening and when we arrived the on-line reservations we made were not transmitted to the restaurant. Even though the restaurant was booked they gave us a table. The expresso and Tiramisu is fantastic way to end the evening.

Not my favorite

By SoCal_Josh |

This place was not what I expected, it was slow inside yet service was slow too. The prices are expensive for the quality of food. It was just average, there are better places right up the street, the best food on Melrose is at Osteria La Buca, that place is freaking amazing.

For who in Italy....non c'e' mai stato (never went )

By Intel by Nic |

This place is for people who never tried an Italian restaurant . I can cook better then them on a any average day. The pizza looks made from one of those corner spot in NY and the food...I am sorry but it is really average...absolutely not worth the price they have , not even half of it. Trust me you can eat better at Tender Greens....or pick up something from Whole Food. I was there with a bunch of friend and nothing we tried surpassed 5/6 as vote up to 10. It's funny because I came twice by mistake, I previously have the same experience 2 years ago. Not worth it .

A Wonderful Experience!

By Bill B |

Cozy space (not cramped), Excellent Food!, great wait staff. What can I say, the restaurant is non-intrusive so conversation is easy, the food excellent and the atmosphere is friendly and seems very caring. A new discovery for me and going back next week!

Love, love, love this place!!

By Julia W |

Love the atmosphere, love the salads, love the pastas, etc. etc. I have to say that I am an absolute sucker for this kind of Italian food - the last time we were there, we had (among other things) the Reginette della Mamma, and it was delectable! It's got such a nice, relaxed vibe, and I love looking at the historical photos on the wall. Perfect for a Date Night, or an intimate dinner with a few close friends...

The restaurant has an Italian charm. The food is excellent. We had pasta and pizza as well as an Italian antipasto. Wine list top

Good Italian food in Larchmont Area

By Regi B |

Good Italian food in modern day portions - not huge amounts. Appetizer plate of Frittes calamari and other fish - amazing, as was the clams. The pastas and pizzas were incredible! The only downfall was their bread - they have these extremely tiny loaves (maybe 5 inches long cut in 8 slices) of bread and 8 of us kept asking for more until we went through 5 loaves.

Smooth and creamy dishes!

By Vicki K |

We didn't have a reservation. Luckily, there was a table - it was outside, but the heaters made it quite cozy. The waiter was friendly, professional, and checked back with us often. First we chose an appetizer (gnoccho fritto) since I'd never had it before. It was good, interesting, I probably wouldn't order it again - not because it wasn't good, it was just a bit of fried dough and thinly sliced ham. The pasta carbonara and the lasagna bolognese, however, were quite wonderful. Joey ordered a sweet white wine, and it was good. I ordered a pinot nero - not quite what I was looking for. I like zins with low tannin and a big, fruity mouth. Anyway, we'd come back and try other dishes. Give this place a try!

Expensive

By Daleisher |

Ended up their by accident. $12 valet parking. Very small portions. No Grey Goose or Belvedere vodka. Just not our type of restaurant. Pasta very heavily sauced, they recommend a salad, pasta and main dish are the portions are small. I would not return.

Best Italian Food

By kam l |

I like Italian food, but after dining here...I love Italian! The food is incredible! I have never had pasta that was so delicious. We ordered the gnocchi del bosciolo pasta with peas in a wonderful cream sauce. We also tried the pappardelle al fumo. For dessert we had the affogato. We came on a Tuesday evening and there was no crowd. Expect a long wait on the weekends. Make reservations. Looking forward to many more dining experiences here.

Just Like Being in Italy!

I've eaten here several times now and every time I feel exactly like I'm eating in Italy! The dishes are exquisitely prepared and the service is always friendly and helpful. A warm family atmosphere. I highly recommend for a lunch with friends or a romantic evening! You can easily pretend you're in Firenze!

Authentic Italian Resto

By Audrey Nika |

The food, service and ambience was excellent! The restaurant is decorated with large canvas family photos from the 1970s and there is an Italian feel with the Color scheme. The food is excellent! The duck ragu parpadelle pasta is amazing. The gnocchi and bigoli was great! Everything was good! I recommend everyone coming here!! Truly a hidden gem in LA.

A great place for dinner.

By TyerfromLA |

I took a group of ten of us to dinner. The atmosphere was great. The noise level was vibrant. The food was really fantastic. The calamari was such a good starter as it's unlike others. Check the special board. I had lamb ragú pasta and it was just amazing. I can't wait to go back.

Great place for a real Italian experience. The food was delicious. No matter what you order, it will be good. The service, literally straight from Italy, great wine selection. Valet and some street parking, if you are lucky.

Grazie Mamma..... Bellisimo

By Nick w |

Couldn't resist stopping here on the way to a BBQ in Larchmont... it's 100 pc authentic Venetian. This is Italian and with the best Italian you can eat it every day. Like a Prada suit, you can dress it up or wear it with sneakers....

NOISY AND ADEQUATE

By Lurkinc |

The prices are fair, and occasionally the pasta sauces are good. The food is totally average. The big deal about "Mamma" in the kitchen is that Mamma needs help.Pizza crust too thick and underdone. Salads boring. I won't go here any more. Tried it twice.

Don't Bother

By pk6080 |

The meal started off well, with the staff accommodating our group of five with a table set up outside. The servers were attentive and the bread was good, as was the bottle of Lambrusco we started with. The appetizer salads, the tricolor salad and the burrata with roasted tomatoes were also quite good. Things went down hill when we asked for more bread three separate times and it never appeared. We ordered a second bottle of Lambrusco but the restaurant was "out." They offered a substitute Lambrusco (not nearly as good and a completely different flavor profile), but explained they only had 2/3 of a bottle and it would not be enough for our table. The main courses arrived shortly thereafter: the salmon was well prepared and the sausage and spinach pizza, while quite ordinary, was also satisfactory (but one can't help but wonder why you wouldn't just order a pizza down the street at Village Pizza, as this was nothing special). Things really fell apart with the gnocchi and carbonara. We each tasted the dishes just to ensure that we were not biased and somehow missed something. We all likened the gnocchi to a chicken dumpling Campbell's soup, both in consistency and flavor. The carbonara could only be described as smoky; the overwhelming flavor was similar to a smoked trout or mackerel. In hindsight, I am sorry we did not say anything to the restaurant because it seems a shame that they would continue to serve some of this food. Save your time and money and go to Osteria La Buca (or Village Pizza).

We were visiting Los Angles and decided to try out this trendy restaurant with our family of four teenagers. It was a great experience. The space is small so don't expect lots of arm room but it was comfortable. The food was fresh and excellent. The waiters are professional and attentive. Dogs Free to Roam

By Billy D |

Food was good & enjoyable. But I was very repulsed when a dog of a customers was permitted to roam freely through the restaurant. No this was not a service dog it was the size of a large golden retriever. As a dog owner and a dog lover I must say there is no place for a dog in a restaurant like this or let alone even in Tommy's. I will never dine here again, as it don't care to eat with canines. Shame of the owner!

Fantastic

By L6953YVpaull |

The Italian food at this wonderful restaurant is simply the best I have ever had, and that includes comparing it to the food I ate when in Italy for 2 weeks! I ordered a dish that combined clams, mussels, calamari and other seafood in a broth that then was poured over spaghetti. It was marvelous! The flavorful broth enhanced the spaghetti and also brought out the flavors in the seafood. It was a wonderful alternative to the sauces normally used with spaghetti. My two companions raved about their dishes as well, all three of us saying again and again, "This is the best Italian food I have ever had." The terrific food was matched with a good wine list from which we each selected a glass of something that appealed to us individually and each of us loved our wine selections. The waiter treated us as they did in Italy-friendly and efficient, offering excellent suggestions, attentive without being intrusive and letting us linger through our meal. This was not just a dinner, it was a total great experience.

So yummy!

We walked down for lunch. Our waitress was the sweetest thing and very helpful. The pasta was perfectly done. The atmosphere was quaint and welcoming. It really was the perfect lunch for me and my honey.

too much salt

By jak n |

We have been going to this place for five years. But have not been in over a year. So we all have a pasta dish. Mamma went crazy with the SALT.. we couldn't finish our meals. Got up and left

Family Owned Favorite

By George M |

We dine here several times a month, it is our neighborhood favorite. Mamma -- yes, there really is a mamma in the kitchen -- turns out what is quite simply the best pasta dishes this side of the Mississippi. Service is friendly and efficient and the wine list, overseen by owner-son-sommelier Filippo, is terrific and runs the price gamut from pricy to reasonable with a few bargains thrown in.

Outstanding Italian Food!

By Joseph L |

I was brought here by a friend who has been coming for a while. He tells me it is all recipes from the owners mother. They have specials as well as a large regular menu. Gnocchi is a specialty. We had a carpaccio appetizer to start, very large and delicious. We had Barolo wine they were serving by the glass only, when they only had 2/3 of the bottle left, we bought the rest, and they gave us a fair deal. I had a stuffed squab special for entree. This was 2 stuffed squab, a normal sized plate, my friend had the gnocchi, which was a huge plate, we could not finish it. The bread was delicious too. Dinner for 2 with the wine a dessert to share, soup + app to share, was about $150. Close to Paramount on Melrose.

Expected more

By L2Connelly |

I was underwhelmed. For homemade pasta, it didn't seem that exciting to me. Seemed a bit boring and bland. Service was very slow. I felt like I was forgotten about. Ambiance was ok, again nothing special. It was crowded and it seems popular and welll liked by families. Easy parking.

Big Surprise

By RobertaVant |

Usually Italians, travelling around the world well know that in italian restaurants abroad don't use to cook in the traditional way, but this is the real exception. Osteria Mamma is a quite relaxing place, where Mrs Loredana still prepares fresh pasta home made and welcome her guests with a brilliant smile. I truly reccommend to visit them.

Spotty service, great food, huge wine list

By helloceleste |

Had a nice dinner here with a friend. The staff looked confused because I made a reservation and the place was fairly empty at 7p. I was approached by a woman who sort of stared at me and made me feel like I didn't belong, but another guy helped me and he was nice and welcoming. I certainly didn't feel welcomed by the woman! The busser was also particularly dour, serving and refilling water like she was enslaved instead of a paid staffer. (Which is why I had to knock off a star.) If they could improve that portion of the experience then it would have been an absolute delight. Our server however was nice and patient, we had some high-maintenance requests and mispronounced everything. We asked him to help us with pronunciations and he obliged respectfully but not condescendingly. Thumbs up for him. Wine list is extensive and impressive! I was happy with my summery choice of wine. For food, I had a shrimp salad which was insanely delicious. My friend had an octopus dish which she devoured. The food was so good that I got my husband some pasta to go. Oh and I also want to mention that the bread and marinara they serve is deliciouso! One curious note - there were 3 guys seated for a short while who were then moved. I don't know if they were moved to the patio by their own choice or asked to asked to leave the restaurant bc they were dressed a little hood but not at all inappropriately. I got there before them and didn't see them when I left so I wonder if they just finished dinner before me or if they were asked to leave... If it is the latter I would be thoroughly disappointed because I would have to stop coming here.

Little Bit of Italy!

When I'm craving pasta, this is my go to. It's all made in house and cooked to perfection. I've never been and not seen "Mamma" there! The truffle mozzarella bruschetta is do die for!

The BEST Italian

By Sophie |

The food here was out of this world. The best Italian food I possibly have ever eaten. The service was fantastic and a great atmosphere. We had 3 courses and each one delightful. I will be visiting the next time I am in the area.

A stunningly good Italian restaurant

By Jeff K |

A most enjoyable dinner at this wonderful restaurant. The food is amazing and the choice is huge from la pasta, seafood, risotto to pizza. The sweet was also authentic and great.

Was Disappointing

By Barbara J |

Been going here since it opened and have always enjoyed the food. Tonight the chicken was thin dry and tough. The ravioli with red sauce were tasteless and the sauce bland. Very sad as this was a restaurant I always liked having dinner at. I guess things changed or off night or both.

Delicious

Fom the moment we were all seated, the service was amazing, the food outstanding! We all had different meals and everything was great, there were 7 of us. Very cozy

Great Dinner!

By Sylvia H |

We meet family members here for dinner and were expecting typical Italian fare. The food was much better than expected. I ordered a wood-fired pizza and my husband ordered a steak. We both found our meals excellent. We would definitely return when we are in the area again.

Great find!

By Lisa-Anne F |

We happened upon this unassuming little restaurant and are so glad we did. It was warm and cozy and cute. The waiters were real Italians. The food was great and the prices not bad at all. The bread and marinara sauce that they brought to the table was nothing special - not even very good. They could really improve upon that by making or buying much better real italian bread and serving it with olive oil. After the bread though everything was wonderful. We each had a salad that was delicious and of a reasonable size (not big enough for a dinner but way bigger than a little dinner side salad). I had the most delicious lobster tagliatelle dish - it was mouth watering. My son had an equally yummy dish recommended to him by the waiter. We were stuffed. The portion sizes are just right.. My only complaint other then the bread is that it took a really LONG time to get our entree pastas. I mean like 25 minutes. I kept trying to get the waiters attention to see what was taking so long but could not. Once it came, the food was yummy. We will definitely return. Next time I want to save room for dessert.

Best meal of our trip to America!

By valentina 17 |

Cozy and authentic place, it really feels like being in Italy. I ordered the cheese and pepper and they served it directly in the cheese form... spectacular! It was creamy, tasty and made to perfection. We ate great, definitely the best place we stayed during our trip to America. Absolutely recommended! A cozy and authentic place that really feels like being in Italy. I ordered the cacio e pepe and they brought it out in a whole wheel of cheese... just amazing! It was creamy, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. We ate so well here—it was definitely the best place we tried on our trip to America. Highly recommended!

wonderful restaurant!

By beejeeGA |

Our son and his wife took us here during our visit last week. The service and the food were outstanding! We had a lovely dinner and were very impressed with the wine list. Our first visit was 7 years ago and we have been waiting to come back and experience true Italian cuisine again. It was the first place on our list . We traveled over 3,000 miles and couldn't wait to eat here again! Our waiter was extremely helpful. The ambiance is good albeit a bit noisy. We are looking forward to our next visit. I wish they would come to Atlanta and open a restaurant.

Great Italian restaurant!

By davsuze |

This was a quaint Italian eatery that had very good food and very good service. We enjoyed seafood risotto, gluten free pizza and salads and everything was great. I would highly recommend this place and hope to go back someday.

Great local spot

Friendly ambience, good food and an extensive list of Italian wines. One of the best in Larchmont area.

Birthday Celebration

By MrPerryN |

My wife and I took our son, his girlfriend and our daughter here to celebrate the son's 35th birthday. They had been there before buy really wanted to go back for the Gnocchi. All 5 of us enjoyed our choice of dinners along with a couple of bottles of wine. It is a fairly small place, but intimate, and service was excellent. Food was very good but a little expensive in my opinion. What really matters is that everyone really enjoyed themselves for the birthday celebration.

Small restaurant , you feel like you're in Italy!

By Doon2013 |

This is a very small restaurant with tables pretty close to one another. The service was very friendly and didn't try to rush me even though it was busy. I had pasta with seafood and it was absolutely delicious!!!

I felt like i was back in Italy

By tiffney |

What a wonderful spot tucked away in Melrose! Service gets an A+ wine was delicious and the food was incredible. I was celebrating with a girlfriend and this was a perfect spot. The ambiance was just right for us to have a nice conversation. Everything from the wine to the dessert and coffee at the end topped all of my expectations. This was my friends choice but i will be back. So good.

Delicious authentic Italian

By Ronwol |

As a major foodie, I am always excited to go to a restaurant that is perfect from appetizers to dessert. Well, this is the one! Had a terrific tricolore salad, sea food spaghetti made to perfection and a superb tagliata (sliced steak). Service was great and offered a nice selections of wine. All reasonablly priced for that quality and service. Will go back!!

Basic Italian food you can make at home.

By Baker W |

This review is pertaining to the food only, the service was wonderful. I don't know if I thought I would ever say this, but I would rather go to Olive Garden. The food here was a little too basic, even though the restaurant claims that is what they are going for. The bread was dry and served with marinara I'm almost certain came out of a can or a jar that says Ragu. Our appetizer, beef carpaccio, was decent and large but nothing to write home about. My grilled Tuna was cold and tough and the brussel sprouts had zero seasoning or flavor. My wife ordered Spaghetti allo Scoglio and it too tasted like something I could whip up in a saucepan in about 45 seconds at home. This entire "experience" cost us $75, $90 after tip. We will not be going back. Sorry mamma.

Small, lively and friendly place

By sam2066 |

This was my first time being here and only decided to pick this place based on the Yelp reviews online. After being in south east asia for almost 3 months i wanted something different! Therefore my friend and I decided to grab some Italian food and picked this place as mentioned! walked in was seated right away, by a friendly staff, it appeared this is a family owned placed, it has a very nice atmosphere with low dim lighting, not sure if i would consider this place romantic but it can be a little intimate, fast service, from what and bread service! the menu seemed new with many great items reasonably priced. my friend and I decided to go for the gnocchi with mushroom and chicken. (i know chicken right!). Anyhow, i was a bit disappointed the gnocchi did not taste fresh, the "chicken" that i had imagine would be a grilled breast cut up and overlying on the pasta, it was more of a ground chicken in a white sauce with what seemed finely chopped mushrooms, since there was no visual of any. the pasta had a gummy texture, of which gnocchi is supposed to be almost melt in your mouth effect!. I am giving this place a 3 star based on my first time experience and the quality of the food more or less. I would probably come back here again and try something different just not sure if it would be anytime soon.

Excellent food and terrific service!

By Anthony M |

We heard several restaurants across the world were contributing portions of your purchase from ordering Bucatini all'Amatriciana to the earthquake victims in that region of Italy and we wanted to go to Osteria Mamma for a long time. The place has 2 inside seating areas and a small outdoor space. We showed up about 6:30pm with no reservations and got a table right away at the window. Our handsome German waiter greeted us with Italian! We dive into the menu and spotted what we wanted. Ordering the Burrata Felice and Tre Colori salad to start. We both ordered Bigoli All'Amatriciana. Also we got a glass of the house red as you would in any Italian restaurant. The Burrata with the roasted tomatoes is a little slice of Italian heaven. The salad is spicy and light dressed goodness. The pasta is one of the best pasta dishes I've had outside of Italy! Well go back. There are a bunch more things to try on their menu!

wonderful

By biglamotski |

My wife is Italian, so our standards for Italian food outside of Italy are not often met - but this restaurant certainly did. It's the real deal. I had the bigoli neri, which was fantastic. Environment is great, small but very comfortable, clean, and nicely decorated. The good reputation is deserved.

Pleasant ambiance and good food, just what we wanted

By checkpointcheryl |

Exactly what you want from an Italian restaurant. Excellent pasta dishes, friendly and warm atmosphere. The basics done right, and plenty of special dishes too if you want to branch out. We enjoyed a family birthday dinner here and would come back anytime.

Very Disappointing

By Dan P |

Incredibly disappointed in the integrity of this restaurant. I left my credit card here on accident when paying my bill along with the receipt that was collected by their team. Instead of holding it there for me, a member of their team took it upon themselves to go shopping with it (hundreds of dollars in charges) and even bought themselves lunch at Osteria Mamma today with it! A fraud investigation is underway but between this horrible experience and the tiny, overpriced portions I will not be returning and would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Fabulous hole in the wall that comes with gorgeous architecture too.

By Tamara M |

This was an unexpected stop because the place across the street was closed and what a lucky break. I don't know what the other place would have been like, but this one was spectacular. Great architectural details and atmosphere is just the beginning. Quaint and small with wonderful service. The menu is small but the options are delicious and the presentation is a work of edible art. My husband had artichoke soup, then we shared my order of margarita pizza and a calamari mixture appetizer. It was a great lunch option. $20 for a choice of each. Also came with two types of nummy bread and marinara sauce. Prices were very reasonable - particularly for Los Angeles. There's valet parking behind and plenty of street parking if you want to go that way, but be careful because much of it is 1 hour only.

True Italian cusine in Los Angeles

By Amedeo D |

This is an authentic Italian style osteria, with a true Italian ambience. As for the food, it's remarkable. The tastes are pure, and there are no unnecessary ingredients in their dishes. Just like in Italy, simple is better when cooking. The appetizers are wonderful, and very creative in the variety of tastes they offer. The pastas are excellent, and the main dishes we had were perfect. The chef and kitchen staff are on top of their game. Also, the wine selection is superb. Love this place!

Cosy

By Pschon |

Great with no chain restaurant. Typical Home made Italian style restaurant. Super service by Italiano servant. I ordered moussels by they were out of them, pitty. Buffalo mozzarella nicely served. My spinach ravioli was good hur far too much butter sage, very fatty.

Not What It Used To Be

By Rorole2 |

I use to love this restaurant. When Mama was around, it was a warm, charming place. But, now, the service was awfulI. We waited and waited to be served. In addition, we made a reservation twice and it was not honored. i’ve recommended the restaurant to many people in the past. Unfortunately, I will not return. All in all, the food is very good.

Always wonderful

By RNPSHP |

I have been to Osteria Mamma many times and have never been disappointed. The meal begins with bread accompanied by a fabulous home made tomato sauce. The pasta dishes are legendary and great. But I usually have Tagliata, and unlike most restaurants I go to, when I ask for rare it is always cooked perfectly rare here. The Affogato is terrific. I have never had a dish that was less than wonderful. Prices are moderate. The wine list offers a comprehensive tour of Italy. Service is good. Early evening is best if you want to converse. It gets quite noisy when full. Afternoons are also good. The restaurant stays open through the afternoon to catch people from nearby Paramount studios whose schedules don't respect conventional mealtimes. Nor does my schedule, so I often go in the afternoon and it is never packed.

Authentic and family run

By George Y |

This is a great spot for authentic and hard to find pasta dishes. Desserts are also nice, especially the panna cotta. It's family run and therefore service is warm and attentive. It's located on a nondescript section of Melrose. The interior is very Venetian. I especially like it for a slow lunch

Great Dinner

By Carrie G |

We went without reservations for dinner but they were able to accommodate us. Pasta was delicious. They only serve Italian beer but that was fine for us. Quick and friendly service.

Good, but not sure what all the fuss is about, a bit pricey

By Terry A |

This is right down the street from me so I was excited at the prospect of a new neighborhood restaurant. We were there on opening night, not by plan but serendipity. I ate here again for lunch with my daughter. The food was good. For lunch I had trout with spinach and it was very fresh. My daughter had the pasta bolognese. Also good. But I have to say that $26 for the trout at lunch was high. I mean, it was good. But this is a pretty no frills restaurant, just a little osteria. Service was at a minimum (no complaints, we didn't need more), the decor is casual, and I didn't get anything with the trout but the trout and spinach. So $26 appalled me. I was figuring around $19. They didn't have prices on the board for their specials, which also irked me. If you are going to take the time to write them all on a blackboard in the restaurant, why not put the price? Felt a bit deceptive. So I may return for some homemade pasta. But this place hasn't blown me away yet. I love the concept of a neighborhood trattoria, but their prices are a bit more high scale than the ambience. I can go next door to the Larchmont Grill and pay about the same and get more variety and a posher and plusher environment. I know about local, handmade, and quality. I expect to pay more. It feels a bit like they are resting on their laurels from their previous restaurant. If you want a nice dish of pasta, you get a good amount for around $15, this is good. For a finer meal I'd cross the street to the Grill. For casual good food at a great price I'd hit Pueblo Viejo next door, their food is also fresh and very reasonable. This place just doesn't feel like they've found their rhythm yet.

Good Italian food

The Closest Food to Italy in Los Angeles

By Isabel S |

We had a wonderful dinner last night at Osteria Mamma. This is a neighborhood restaurant with a casual, great vibe. The food is great! All their ingredients are imported from Italy and made on the premises. The portions are very large and easily shared. We had lentil soup, mixed seafood salad, linguini with clams, a veal chop, branzino, a squid ink pasta with shrimp and torta ala nonna for dessert. I would recommend everything on the menu.
