A great restaurant.

By TheShis |

This is a fantastic restaurant and we enjoyed our dinner here very much. Service was nice, despite the place being packed, and the food was absolutely delicious.

Nice surprise

By Remi Munger |

Myself and a group of friends just landed in San Diego and after dropping our luggage at the hotel, we went on to explore the fifth street for a place to eat. We found Osteria Panevino and tried a couple of items on their menu. The capresse were to die for, the tropicale salad was a nice surprise and the pizza we had was really good. They also serve an octopus salade that is marvellous!!!

Nice Italian

By Bphman |

I found this place on TripAdvisor and easily got a table. When we got there, the place was packed but we were seated right away. The place has a good and lively vibe and is nicely decorated. We skipped appetizers because we were dead tired from traveling. My wife had the Chicken Siciliano. The chicken was rubbery but very tasty. The other components were otherwise delicious. They were very apologetic and tried everything to make it right but it really wasn't necessary. She was full with what she did eat. They surprisingly comped her meal. I had Chicken Parmigiana with pasta. I was not in an adventurous mood so this is my go to dish. It was delicious and served with a perfectly cooked pasta with a simple tomato sauce. The wine list is quite extensive with some reasonable selections as well as some extravagant ones. Service was exceptional. Our waiter could not have been better. Water and wine glasses were kept full. I would definitely return and would probably go for the meaty Osso Buco over risotto that many were enjoying.

All the Italian favorites.

Osteria Panevino is a good Italian choice in the Gaslamp Quarter. The service was really good! Many traditional pasta dishes and really delicious lamb Chops, steaks and loved the Chilean Sea Bass. A calm restaurant, nice dinner in the busy Gaslamp Quarter.

Great food and service

By Lee |

Service was excellent, food was even better! Staff were friendly. Atmosphere was good. What more can I say - if I lived in San Diego, I would come back.

Where Italy meets fine dining, in the heart of Gaslamp. From exceptional service to hefty portions!

By Lily J. |

Absolutely delicious Italian food in the heart of Gaslamp!! For the appetizer, we got the bruschetta which is the perfect app for two before you load up on the main course. (Not to mention they also put complimentary bread and butter.) The staff was super accommodating and let me pick whatever pasta I wanted with whatever sauce! I ordered pappardelle pasta (wide fettuccine) with vodka cream sauce (off-menu)... which was TOO good. The risotto in the ossobuco was so savory, as was the veal shank. No room in our stomachs for dessert, but that menu was tempting enough. Head over to Osteria Panevino if you're in Gaslamp and are craving hearty Italian food!!!

Vermentino on the wine list!

By travellinted |

We had a very good dinner at Panevino. The food was delicious, and our wines were Tuscan. The only criticism is that we felt somewhat rushed, but that's America for you. The ambiance is wonderful, with barrel-vaulted ceilings, Italian city-state banners, and a mural of Renaissance Florence.

Great Chicken Parm!

By mxp2013 |

Right in the Gaslamp District, this Italian restaurant served some excellent food. The chicken parm was large. The sauce was delicious. Parking was tough. But worth visiting.

Just OK

By JLWK2015 |

Nice menu, but depending upon your tastes limited. The food was Ok. Mine was lukewarm warm, my husband’s was very hot. Our waitress was very nice and friendly.

Pleasant experience in Gaslamp

By chrisdente |

Had dinner with a friend on the porch last week while visiting for a conference. Service was exquisite. They allow you to order off the menu. Basically any pasta you want. Pasta was fresh and homemade and phenomenal. Nice wine list. Definitely worth a stop

Best Pizza Ever!

By liknee |

First night in SAN Diego we went to this restaurant for dinner. Our server was pleasant, the wine very good and I had the best pizza I’ve ever had. Loaded with olives, artichokes, prosciutto and mushrooms. There was enough for two meals and thin crust. Highly recommend.

Amazing authentic Italian food

By Ken Rothstein |

My hotel where I was staying recommended the restaurant next door to Panevino. I got out of my Lyft and saw the menu at Panevino. I said this is it and I was not wrong. We were in Italy 2 months ago and I got spoiled. The food here brought me back to Italy. The service was perfect and my server, Annalisa was wonderful. I ordered the Cacio y Pepe and it was great. The pasta was al dente and the sauce was wonderful. A very simple dish that can be ruined, not here. Tell everyone to try this place. It was really good. Amazing2 food and really friendly service

Great authentic Italian food

By Christine B |

My husband and I came here for our anniversary and loved our authentic, fresh Italian meal. We ordered the fish of the day with large prawns and lover mash potatoes and the lasagna and a salad. The meal came with bread and our sweet server brought us a complementary tiramisu to help us celebrate our occasion. We loved our food and we are looking forward to coming back!

Decent Italian restaurant

By Ric B |

The food was good, the service was fine, princes were reasonable. All in all, a good meal. You had a choice of eating inside with white tablecloths, or outside along the sidewalk which was much less formal. The evening was a bit breezy, so we ate inside. I believe that we got much better service doing that.

Friendly and welcoming with good food

By jeremy s |

Friendly service and happy to help us share their super-sized portion of Caesar Salad and Pizza. Well recommended.

Great Atmosphere, Great Food

By japerl |

We had eaten here last year around the same time and it was a fantastic memory so we made reservations again for a 7pm sit down. I had built it up in my mind how good it was and they did not disappoint. Upon arrival we were greeted immediately and ushered to our table tucked in the back.........we ordered drinks from Sabrina and a bottle of wine which we received and started on...... We ordered appetizers and discussed what we were going to order for our entrees. My wife got the lasagna and I ordered the sea bass.........both meals hit the spot and we dined like royalty. The desert menu looked fabulous but we couldn't do it so we went on our way....... Great service Great food Great time

AAAAAMAZING!!!

By deidra m |

We went to this place while on vacation. Just out walking and they invited us in!! She said "it's the best, you won't be disappointed!!!" The food is PERFECTLY seasoned, and the portions are great. The atmosphere was nice and calm, and they gave great service! I'm recommending this place to all of my travel friends and colleagues!!! #Magnifique'

Great food, great service!

By Carol33364 |

Excellent food, lovely service. They have a nice area outside to assist with the seating that may get crowded inside. Definitely a must for good italian food! Fresh, tasty, pasta made from scratch! I had the lasagna; my husband had cioppino (sp?) All was delicious. Would highly recommend!

Wonderful restaurant

By Askoepp |

Our hotel recommended this restaurant to us and we were very grateful they did. We were 2 couples. The tables are all very close, as it is not a large restaurant. The ambiance was wonderful. The decor very nice. We thought we ordered table water but we were brought bottled flat water. It was very good but an unexpected charge for the evening. However we all agreed it was worth it. I had the spinach ravioli with pesto. It was the best I have ever had. Our friend had the lasagna and really liked it. We all truly enjoyed our meal. We did not have an appetizer or dessert so I can’t comment on that. I will definitely go back and suggest you definitely go.

Great place

By NozzaL |

Had a lovely evening in Osteria...cool bar, great service and food. They have a great wine selection and the server was very knowledgeable about the wine

Oh Wow!!

By María Elena T |

This restaurant is really good!!!! We were there for dinner while in San Diego. We chose it because of the good reviews here in TripAdvisor and were very happy we did. Our server, Stefano, was excellent Food was delicious. We ordered Frittura di Calamari, Ravioli di agnello and penne al cinghiale. All were delicious!!!

Great Italian Food

By AussieJulesW |

Situated in the heart of the Gaslamp entertainment precinct, OP serves home style Italian fare done really well - specialising in house made pastas. I had Agnolotti with slow cooked short rib topped with mushroom sauce and Parmesan. It was rich and delicious. My partner’s sea food dish was packed with shrimp, etc. She raved about it. Special mention to the house baked brad and whipped butter. Soooo good. The service was spasmodic, but the food was the best we’d had in 4 days in San Diego.

Great Risotto

By jetvolleyball |

Need a good gluten free meal and zoster is did not disappoint. Octopus appetizer was excellent. Risotto was one of the best I’ve had. Great experience.

Good food, good service

By Dollface23 |

We found this restaurant by trip advisor reviews. Food was very tasty and plentiful. We had a great table by the front window. Enjoyed our pastas and chicken parm. Would recommend

Shady business practices

By Patric L |

The food is nothing special and way overpriced for what you get. Touristy place! Got an upset stomach after 30 min. of eating the boar meat pasta. I've never seen boar meat hacked into small pieces before. The meat didn't even taste like boar meat! Stefano the waiter gave himself a nice tip. Signed for 58 USD and got charged 59.70 USD on my credit card. Is that even legal! Shady business practices!

Busy and noisy

By Cecilie H |

Had a vegetarian pizza and a spinat gnocci, tasted great. But all of the staff ran their aSes off. To busy. They took our plates at our last bite. Slow down please it bothers the meal!

Loved it!!!!

By C. Landa V. |

Incredible place!!! It has been at Gaslamp for a long time and has a very large clientele. We liked their service. Everyone was very helpful and nice. The food was incredible!!! It is popular!!!

Pasta Lamb out of this world !!

Staff Rude and arrogant

By Sparky190 |

Food ok Staff extremely rude and arrogant in-particularly Simone within minutes of us sitting down his attitude was awful. Would not recommend due to this

Delightful Lunch

By GinaB50 |

Came across this restaurant by chance and they are super friendly and charming. Delicious lunch in a very relaxed atmosphere, helped by several never ending mimosas. We ordered from the lighter morning menu, but having looked at the full menu wished we could have come back for dinner! Also excellent value. Highly recommended.

Long layover dinner

By ldleier2 |

We read the reviews and had a lovely early dinner. The drink was stout and refreshing and our waitress AnnaLisa was wonderful and friendly. The food was fresh and had an excellent flavor. The Burrata was delicious and the pancetta really added a nice flavor. The mushrooms on the pizza were firm and had a meaty texture! Highly recommend!

Nice place in gaslamp district

By porter_osborne |

Enjoyed a mid week dinner at Osteria. Food was great. My wife, who is a very good cook and widely traveled said the grilled mushroom appetizer was the best that she has ever had. Bolognaise and seafood penne were both very nice. Service was good, but not great. I think our table was assigned to a staff member with a LARGE group and we ended up with service by committee. Nothing terrible just not the normal excellent service we have experienced here in the past. Table just beside the bar was sub-optimal, but acceptable given the cool weather that evening, otherwise we could have dined at a nice table outside.

Excellent food, great service!

By mikethorlin@gmail.com |

We went to Osteria Panevino for dinner while in San Diego on business. We ordered the Tagliere Formaggi e Salumi as an appetizer, wife had the Insalata Capicciosa and I has the Ossobuco Milanese... everything was absolutely fabulous... Highly reccomended. 5 stars in spite of probs with the mens room

Fine Italian Amarone Chasing Veal Osso Bucco: Delightful

By Vegasjoe57 |

My wife and I fine dined here and I had to go with the house staple: Veal Osso Bucco and the amazing Masi Amarone was so delightful. Split a home made ravioli with lamb and spinach and mushroom sauce. She the veal saltimbocca with spinach. Very healthy portions and all pastas made fresh in house. Great service as well.

July 4th

By Jessica L |

This is such a difficult review to write because there is nothing wrong with the food or the location. Unfortunately the reason for my bad review is the service especially that of the female manager that was there on July 4th. We were there around 10 and we understand many places were closed or getting ready to close so we’re walking around gaslamp looking for restaurants closing late. The waiter at this restaurant tells us they close around 11-11:30 and asks where we would like to sit. The outside area is empty and a few tables are occupied inside. We chose to sit outside and get our order taken by the same gentleman. Drinks and appetizers come out and nothing else. More people arrive and pretty soon the outside area is filled as well as more tables inside. We notice other tables get their food but we don’t. After about an hour we ask the waiter if the food will take much longer and he gestures that it’ll be out soon. Time passes by and nothing. One of our friends asks for the manager and she comes out after several minutes and says our appetizers have come out and we should be patient for the rest of the food. 6/8 plates come out but 3 are cold and are sent back. 2 meals never come out. At this point we are frustrated and just ask for our check. Manager comes back out and is clearly bothered, raises her voice and tells us we need to make up our minds about wanting the meal or not. By then we’re frustrated and one of my friends raises his voice and tells her we just want our check so we can leave. The manager tells us we don’t have to pay because clearly that’s what we wanted and tells us to leave the restaurant. We understand restaurants get busy. We understand there are errors and maybe our orders were never put in but there is no reason for a manager to behave the way she did. We tried to talk to her and explain but she was clearly not having it. I know this is only one group of unsatisfied customers but I’ve never had such a horrible experience in a restaurant of this kind. Please work on your customer service.

Very good italian and authentic!

By JEREMY_and_LISA |

We really enjoyed dinner here, authentic and great service. Maybe a 10% higher cost than expected, but in general, excellent otherwise!

Wonderful atmosphere, service, and food!

By Marzarmy |

I dined here with my family for the first time tonight and it was fantastic! I ordered the lasagna bolognese after reading rave reviews and it did not disappoint! It came in an individual dish with lots of cheese and sauce. I highly recommend trying it! My mom ordered the lobster ravioli and said the vodka sauce was delicious! The waitress recommended the seafood risotto which my cousin said was amazing! We loved the Alta Mora Chianti so much we ordered two bottles! I read reviews commenting on the prices being high here but I found it to be very reasonable especially for downtown San Diego. The food was authentic and amazing! Definitely worth a trip if you are wanting Italian. The ambiance was great and quiet which can be hard to find down town. Our waitress was very friendly and gave wonderful recommendations. The crème brule was also a hit!

It was ok. Maybe I just was expecting more

By Kent H |

I sat at the bar. I don’t recommend that. Better service if your at a table. Had to ask fir the bread which was hot but not good. I wanted eggplant the bartender recommended the eggplant ravioli. Ravioli was OK eggplant was puréed inside of it so you really didn’t taste the eggplant. Probably order the wrong thing

Yum

By Freddy4 |

We had 8 pm reservations but ended up feeling hungry earlier at 7:15. No worries they had us seated immediately. Great atmosphere. Our waiter was from Sicily-I’m Sicilian and he was charming! We ordered too much. The artichoke appetizer was insane. Wonderful tangy artichokes in a delicious lemon olive oil sauce. Served with bread. My husband ordered the Osso Bucco, and a side order of the carbonara. I ordered the papardalle with veal meat sauce. The carbonara was the highlight. We of course ordered too much food. Should have just shared the appetizer and had the carbonara. Did not have room for desert but I do wanted to try the limoncello cake. Great place, and it’s very cozy with the seats quite close together. We made friends on either side of us. Bathroom was clean. Workers super friendly and helpful.

Stale seafood plate

By Kimberly |

Disappointing , I ordered special of the day seafood plate with lobsters and clams and others. Pasta was watery and no taste, clams were stale and smelly I told the waiter I could not eat that and took a chance of being sick but they said since I partially ate a very small portion of it, they only offered a small discount of $10 on a $80 bill. Thanks for the good bread or I would have gone home hungry.

Great find in San Diego

By Daniele |

Located in front of our Hotel, we were immediately struck by the kindness with which we were welcomed, almost all Italian staff and ingredients / dishes / wines absolutely up to par. Prices in line with the place, California is obviously not known for the "humane" cost of living. Congratulations guys, thanks for the pleasant evening!

Great service and high quality food

By MNC |

Homemade pasta, great sauces, and they got all 13 meals ready together and hot. Wines from Italy were fine. Friendly service without hanging over.

Great Italian food

By Peter C |

Went in on a recommendation from our bus driver. She was right, his place is great! We started off with eggplant Rollatini , best we had. A Caesar salad then the meal. I Had the ravioli stuffed with lamb and mushrooms, real good. Wife had chicken parm, looked like turkey parm it was so big. She couldn't finish it so guess who did. I couldn't move I ate so much. Upon paying the bill they gave as a coupon for free appetizer on next time there, it was our last night so I gladly gave it to our bus driver. Dynamite dinner.

THE BEST ITALIAN RESTAURANT IN SAN DIEGO 💖

By Vigorelli Angelica |

First night in San Diego and finally dinner in a real Italian restaurant, in the Gaslamp neighborhood. Stefano Domenico and Francesco welcome you with kindness and sympathy, in this family-run tavern and make you feel a bit in Italy. They will guide you in choosing the best dishes🥰 Great location, you can dine outdoors or indoors, attention to detail from mise en Place to ironed and spotless tablecloths Ke nn is obvious. Excellent fish, amazing meat, excellent pasta dishes, desserts and excellent wines. Great value for money. Absolutely recommended!!!!!!

Great service but the food was not

By ScottSween |

Giuseppe was a great waiter - always right there and his accent made us feel like we were in Italy. The food was not quite on point - calamari appetizer was overcooked and the tomatoes in the caprise salad were under ripe and rock hard. Dinner entrees were OK, sauce too strong for the sea bass, but others were fine. Great atmosphere but didn't feel the food lived up to the reputation or the price.

Great food, a little stuffy

By Victoria B |

We made reservations for this restaurant, but after trying to find parking and with our 3 month old in tow, we were about 30 minutes late. I HATE to be late, but the hostess acted like it was SUCH an inconvenience to seat us. We were stuck in the back corner at a table that we could barely fit at. I asked for water to drink and we were charged $6 for a bottle of still water. Woah, just pour it out of the faucet! Unless you have bad water and then why are you in business? I got the Salmon Venezi and my husband got the Risoto. We both enjoyed our meal VERY much. With the baby in tow, we needed to eat fast and get out before she woke up and it was like pulling teeth to get the check. Overall a very good review for the food, but the staff could have been better.

It is rare to say Incredible

By mbdaley4 |

Food was extraordinary, main course as well as appetizers, desserts and cocktails. Loved it so much we went back the night after for dessert and another cocktail. They treated us like we had been friends or neighbors for 20 years, no kidding. Wait staff was very, very attentive. Small details like the quality of the strawberries on the Crème Brûlée….or the shaved dark chocolate on the Expresso Martini. After researching for a week and selecting this restaurant out of hundreds that I looked at….is was worth the time. Wow….!!

Stayed at the Hyatt and did not know where to go. Was told by the lady at reception that this restaurant was good and she eats there a lot. In the heart of the gaslamp area and easy to find. Got seated quickly, staff friendly, Italian speaking staff. Not sure if family ran. The food was quick and tasted amazing. Reasonably priced. Would go back on our return to San Diego :-).

Best Service and Italian Food

By Christy Lim from Singapore |

We walked up and down 5th Ave and found this is the most popular restaurant. Did a search and see that the rating is good so we walked in. We are glad that we choose this restaurant instead of the one next door. We were at the restaurant early at 6pm without a reservation and managed to get an outdoor seat. By 6.30pm the restaurant is nearly full and many people made their reservation. We feel lucky to be able to get a seat without reservation. Our waiter Giuseppe is great! He recommended us Seafood pasta and Gilled Cod Fish. We love the Gilled Cod Fish, it really taste so good that we said to go back again if we get a chance :) Great place for Business dining, Couples and friends gathering.

Best restaurant experience ever

By Mimi Lowery |

Me and my husband were looking for a place where to have sea food. We stopped at different restaurants and read the menu and theirs just caught our eyes and the fact that they also had the catch of the day, which we got and it was delicious: swordfish and grilled veggies. We were treated like royalty. Our server Stefano was fantastic. I am at loss of words for the service and the quality of the food. They have also offered a glass of limoncello. We had a wonderful time. In the pictures you can see cioppino livornese, swordfish, grilled octopus, limoncello cake, prosecco and limoncello. We highly recommend Osteria Panevino. We absolutely love it.

A must for dinner in San Diego

By Debbie B |

This is a lovely restaurant. We were really impressed by the food choices and then the quality of the meals. We visited towards the end of our 3 week road trip from San Francisco and this restaurant was up in the top 3!

Wonderful food, excellent service!

By 788caryls |

Osteria Panavino is NOT closed as Trip Advisor states. We had amazing service from Maria, and wonderful food and drinks there on June 8. Maria and her team were totally on top of everything, and great service makes for a wonderful evening. Maria granted our every wish quickly and with a smile. My husband and I both had salads, pasta (tricolor tortellini, and the penne with wild boar sausage) and took dessert to-go, as we couldn’t finish our entrees. Dinner was so delicious, we took the leftovers back to our hotel for today’s lunch. The fresh bread that was served with dinner was SO good! Loved our experience, and recommend this restaurant 100%!

Like a trip to Italy!

By Chris H |

We just had the most wonderful evening celebrating our wedding anniversary at Osteria Panevino! We were greeted warmly, shown to our special table and we settled in. The pacing of our evening was perfect! We never felt hurried or ignored. The zucchini squash blossoms and the almost impossible to find spare rib agnolotti were the best we’ve had in the states! Exactly like we’ve enjoyed in Italy! But the one thing that made the evening so special was the staff! Everyone was so kind and polite and warm and engaging. A special thank you to Gioni, who we later found out is the general manager. We loved talking with her and sincerely appreciated the extra special touches that made our anniversary so special. The complimentary tiramisu and limoncello at the end of our meal made us nostalgic for our past visits to Italy! Osteria Panevino is the perfect place to experience the warmth of Italy without a 12 hour flight! Thank you to everyone who made our celebration so special!

Disappointed.

By PatWisconsin |

The restaurant is comfortable. The service was good. I ordered the black squid ink pasta with crab. It was awful. There was no sauce on the pasta that I could ascertain and the crab tasted like it came out of a cheap can. And the prices are high.

Quality was worth the trip

By Donal M |

Food was excellent and paired with great wine selection. Staff were friendly and attentive. Nice time - nice night out. Little expensive - but quality was worth it. Not impressed with local surroundings. Downtown has got a little run down and this place is on the outer edge of good v bad.

Ok Italian on 5th

By PM-65-UK |

Ok Italian on 5th. Decor and staff are very nice. Food was a bit hit and miss though. Calamari starter was good (for a city centre restaurant), ravioli was also good, however the pizza was a definite miss - too thick and a bit of a ‘processed taste’. Wine list was reasonable. Overall it was priced at what you’d expect to pay in area, although we felt a little rushed with dishes coming without the chance to breathe. So ok, but not great.

Great Food, Great Service!

By GrandTour02443457785 |

My family and I were looking for a good Italian restaurant in the Gaslamp district of San Diego and stumbled upon this place. We had the bruschetta and eggplant appetizers and they were both very good. Our entrees were even better and service was great. Will definitely be back on our next trip to Coronado/San Diego.

Good establishment, I recommend

Quality Italian Food in an Upscale Environment

By fluffnfold |

My spouse and I dined at Osteria Panevino for dinner on a Friday evening in early July 2018. The restaurant is open daily for lunch and dinner from 11:30 am until 11:00 pm (with extended closing hours until 11:30 on weekends). You can make a reservation using the online Open Table system. Osteria Panevino (which means “Bread and Wine Tavern” in Italian) is located on bustling Fifth Avenue in the Gaslamp District. The restaurant offers seating indoors at either tables or its attractive bar, or outside on the sidewalk beneath a canopy. Decor features exposed brick walls, wooden barrel ceilings, framed black-and-white photographs, interesting lighting, wine bottles and barrels, and unique decorative objects perched on floating shelves. The restaurant offers an expansive menu of authentic Tuscan cuisine; its Sicilian-born chef/owner has worked in the restaurant industry for over 25 years. As we perused the menu, we snacked on house-made bread with olive oil. As an appetizer, we shared one of the daily features, a unique buffalo salad with prosciutto and olives. As our entrees, we ordered two home-made pasta dishes (one Bolognese, one carbonara). Although we were pleased with the quality of our main dishes, we each asked for half of our hearty portions to be wrapped to take home. In that way, we planned to save room for dessert; however, that was not to be. As we waited for dessert menus, we saw our server taking off her apron at the hostess stand and departing the restaurant. (We aren’t sure whether she quit, was fired, or just had some sort of emergency.) No one seemed to pick up our table, and we were unable to order dessert or another round of drinks as we had anticipated. In fact, we had to request our check from someone managerial-looking after it was clear that it wasn’t going to be delivered. Although we enjoyed the food at Osteria Panevino, the way our service ended left us with tarnished memories of the restaurant.

Lively place with wine angel

By ezis e |

As we trolled Fifth Avenue for a dinner spot, the girl at the front desk, Bella, enticed us to enter. We returned the next day, as it was so good. The food and drinks were excellent. Great atmosphere. Service was extremely attentive and professional. Bella also performed a "wine angel" show where she distributed bottles of wine in a high tower while hanging by ropes - a surprise entertainment!

Rushed on Monday night

By dad54 |

The lamb with mushrooms, salads and the rest of our meals were very tasty and well presented. The bread was light and flavourful. Unfortunately, the waiter went well past prompt and attentive service to the level of seeming to rush us to order our several courses, with repeated requests. This place was packed on Monday night, a credit to the quality of the food, BUT the dining experience clearly suffers when you have the impression that you are spending too much time considering your choices from the extensive menu, a few seconds after your water and wine arrive; the main course arrives before the server has had a chance to provide cutlery to replace that which was removed a moment before with the dishes from the first plates. Not impressed.

Delicious!!!

We went there for a birthday celebration and it was our first visit. The food is wonderful and the service is excellent. It's a charming restaurant, with great atmosphere, outside seating and the smells are wonderful!

Only Caters to Large Parties

By Mbnichols |

I made a reservation at this restaurant two weeks ago on Open Table. I confirmed my reservation 48 hours out. But,when I arrived on November 11th, I was told by the Hostess that my table wasn’t ready and she wasn’t sure how long we would wait for it to be ready. She also mentioned told that there were several large parties that night and we may want to go somewhere else???? I was flabbergasted. If the restaurant could not honor my reservation, they could have had the decency to let me know ASAP so I could have made another reservation elsewhere. Now, I am scrambling on the spot to find something decent! I have never, in all my years traveling, experienced this level of unprofessionalism in a dining establishment. The restaurant business is tough and I understand that large parties bring in more revenue than a table for two, but it is the principle of serving your customers that keeps you in business because of a loyal following, this place doesn’t deserve it. I would never dine here, ever….

Restaurant was okay

By Dawn |

If you’re looking for drinks, this isn’t the place for you. The wine is good, the food is decent but not the best in San Diego. The atmosphere is nice, and the patio is great for people watching.

Kooooo!

By Lionor88 |

Nice location but nothing more! The dishes absolutely cannot be defined as Italian. My friend's pasta stretched with butter! Very high bill 140 dollars, two plates of pasta, a glass of wine, two waters and a bitter! Go further! Nexttttt

Bad service

By Claudia V |

We were there last night. The restaurant was not busy but the dishes arrived cold. And one of the dishes was wrong. The waitress was not courteous to that mistake. We expected a better deal. Too bad because the food was good, but a pasta dish that is not hot loses its taste.

Fast , pleasant, service but average food.

By holyisle |

The service was pleasant and attentive. The food arrived very quickly . It was pleasant but average. The gelato was sorely disappointing, a real let down . Icicles as it it have melted and been refrozen.

Very best!

By Dst |

Having returned from Italy a couple months ago, I thought I'd have to learn to make homemade pasta. Nothing compared until I found this restaurant! It not only has the very best pasta dishes but the owner treats you like family. If you haven't visited, please make this restaurant a priority! You will not be disappointed.

Great Food

By Stan P |

We stumbled across this restaurant as there are so many choices in the Gaslamp District of San Diego. My wife is vegan and was able to find food here to eat. She had pasta and a side dish of broccoli. I tried the broccoli and said 'Wow.' It was delicious. I had a chicken breast with eggplant and tomato which was very good also. I definitely recommend this restaurant. Pay attention to the name as there are two Italian restaurants next door to each other and a pizza place next door to that. Our server was Allissa and was very pleasant.

Romantic but A Bit Disappointing

By cwmoore |

Looking for a romantic restaurant on our last evening in San Diego, we headed to the Gaslamp District and discovered this quaint Italian restaurant. My wife and I both ordered chef specials our meals with no sides. There was more than enough food. My wife's halibut served over crab mashed potatoes was delicious. I ordered a spaghetti dish with a red sauce mixed with various types of shell fish, including lobster. My disappointment was that our server did not share that some of the lobster had to be shelled by me. Messy! In addition, it was very spicey. Our server was gracious and very nice, however he should have made me more aware of these facts. In the end, I wish I had gone for the lasagna. In addition, while I realize that finding servers in today's enviroment is difficult, the service was inadquate. Our server returned to our table only once. We had to wait a significant amount of time to pay our check. This may not have been his fault, given that they were very busy but more staff was needed.

worth a visit

By AN_from_NYC |

Lovely dinner starting with a radicchio and fennel salad and fabulous porcini and truffle risotto. The bread was pedestrian and the gelato--well, I should have returned it. the texture was off. Despite that, I would consider eating here again on the next trip to San Diego.

Best meal we had on our vacation!

By Jersey_Gourmet |

We ate at many restaurants across San Diego in places like the Gas Lamp district, Little Italy, Old Townand at places that had 5 star ratings and $$$$ prices. Our hotel recommended Osteria Panevino for our last dinner and what a great place! This is truly a gem for high quality dining with superb service and food that was exceptional in every way. We started with Bruchetonni and it was an well constructed blend of flavors with only freshly made cheese, and freshly prepared vegetables. For mains, my wife ordered the lobster ravioli and i chose the lasagna. Both were exceptional and felt like we were eating a holiday dinner made by an Italian grandma. Could not ask for anything better! For wines, I had the Super Tuscan and my wife had an Italian wine that our server recommended after asking her what her preferences were. Both married well with our selections and really complemented our choices. As to the service, we could not ask for a more attentive complement of servers and wait staff. They were all truly concerned that our meals met our expectations. When we thanked them for an excellent dinner, we felt their thanks were heartfelt and real. There are many choices for fine dining in San Diego but in our opiniion, you really must give Panevino the opportunity to impress you. The menu, the preparation and the service will all impress you and make you glad you chose to dine there.

Not impressed

By LoveTrips03 |

Restaurant is charming and service was friendly but felt they were rushing us. Prices are reasonable if you compared with other options. Food is just ok, I had the short rib gnocchi and it was bland. My colleagues had also pasta dishes and only the bolognesa apparently was good. Great bread and wine.

Homemade, fresh, and delicious

By Matt M |

We were staying at the Ramada gaslamp, and decided we wanted Italian. The front desk person mentioned Osteria, so we walked about a block an a half over, to give it a try. At the time we went, is was one of the busier eateries in gaslamp "so we felt me made the right choice" We were actually seated quickly. Service was top notch. All the meals were fresh, well prepared, and tasted very good. Prices are about normal for that area. Little more then basic place, but worth it while on vacation. Gaslamp has a ridiculous amount of eateries, and I am glad we got to venture into this one.

Shame on you for a padded bill

By bruceb961 |

Food was OK. Too few clams, many shells only in the spaghetti vongele and the eggplant parmesan appetizer had a strange flavor. We had tap water and a bottle of wine, but the waiter added a $6 bottle of San Pellegrino to our bill which we didn’t notice until we had left the restaurant. Too obvious to be a mistake.

Good Italian in Gaslamp district

By vam518 |

Came for dinner before a city tour, had the Malfatti alla vodka which was fresh and delicious. Service was great arrived earlier than reservation and was able to be seated early.

Amazing Food!

By rharding276 |

It's had been a few years since we have been to San Diego. Unfortunately the restaurant we loved closed. This could easily be our new favorite. The food was amazing. The Osso Bucco could be the best that I have ever had. It was over saffron risotto that was just as good. Next time I'd just get wine though. The Mule drink was not very good. Food more than made up for it though. I would recommend this restaurant.

Relaxing despite the location

By Vivere731 |

I was speaking at a convention hotel nearby and my wife and I walked here for dinner. I am not a fan of the Gas Lamp district, which is noisy and touristy. The restaurants are lined up in row after row. We weren’t expecting much, but were pleasantly surprised. The food and wine were very good. The service wasn’t especially attentive, but that was fine as we just wanted to relax. If you are looking for traditional Italian in the Gas Lamp district, try this. Otherwise, go to Little Italy.

Italian at its best

By Julie T |

Food, atmosphere, and Gian Carl (our waiter) were all amazing! We came here after a conference and were able to sit back, laugh, and enjoy each other’s company while savoring wine and excellent food.

Good Italian at Gaslamp

By Jadranka P |

Good Italian food and excellent service … they amended dish to cater to allergy and the dish was very tasteful.

Excellent food, service & atmosphere

By Tricia M |

My group of four had an outstanding dinner here. We just wandered in - knew nothing about it. We sat outside (Jan) under the heat lamp and had a lovely time. The service was very professional, the food was outstanding. The wine list was good. Near the end of the evening, we noticed a group of staff gathering at a table near us and learned the history of the restaurant and the familia - all from the same village in Sicily; how authentic! They were wonderful people making amazing food. You'll be treated right!

Great food in Gaslamp

By Phil G |

Great food, great wine. Split spaghetti with meat source and a pizza. Really, really good. Our new favorite in San Diego for Italian.

Great place to eat in downtown.

By chliini |

The food is awesome. We waited for 10 minutes and the food was here. Staff ist kind. Prices are high in comparison to other places. All in all: Great place to eat in downtown.

Delicious Authentic Italian!

By Tricia L |

The meal starts with warm, fluffy homemade bread and a special butter. My husband had a huge serving of pasta in a hot cast iron and I had the spinach ravioli in a creamy pesto sauce. The spinach ravioli was amazing! Finished up with a fantastic homemade cannelloni 😋

Very good Italian restaurant in center of Gas Lamp in San Diego

By march19131 |

Saturday night out, restaurant is very good, good service in the middle of a happening area. We sat outside, heaters were helping. I will go back again!

Best Italian in San Diego

By holidayman1975 |

Dined at this restaurant and was overwhelmed by the quality, value and genuine caring nature of the staff. After eating at another restaurant in Little Italy can honestly say that this restaurant is hands down the premier establishment in San Diego.

Sidewalk Dining!

By thetinman1 |

This restaurant was within easy walking of our hotel so we stopped in. There were 4 of us so we headed out to the sidewalk tables which was a first for me. The staff were knowledgeable about all things on the menu as well as the wine listings! The place was not very crowded inside and we just about had the outside to ourselves. The waiters were on top of their game and seemed to actually enjoy their jobs! The lobster bisque was delicious as well as the stuffed sole! The service was old school European which means the best! We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and will definitely return!

Good food and service

By Osusana |

Lovely food and excellent service. We sat outside and had an enjoyable meal watching the world go by. The bread was amazing and wine by the glass was not stupidly priced.

Holiday Dinner with Something for Everyone

By Syreeta A |

This place was a great find, right in the heart of downtown San Diego. We went on Thanksgiving Day and really appreciated that they offered both a holiday menu and their full regular menu — a flexibility many restaurants don’t have. Our family needed that since we’re a mix of one vegetarian, two pescatarians, and one carnivore! My son ordered the traditional Thanksgiving meal and said the turkey, green beans, and stuffing were all good. The yams could’ve used a bit more brown sugar, but overall he enjoyed it. My daughter had the veggie lasagna — she liked it, but it’s on the richer side, so make sure you’re into rich flavors before ordering. We had the lobster ravioli and Caesar salad, and both were excellent. We’d definitely return!

Would come back for the Osso Bucco

By Mark I |

In San Diego for a meeting and made reservations here. Was convenient to the Convention Center. Waited 30 minutes at the railroad tracks due to a long freight train. Called the restaurant and the hostess was very understanding and pleasant!? No problem. Had the Osso Bucco. Bone & Marrow left in. Generous portion with risotto. Very good dish. Almost perfect. Service very good. Ambience OK. Sat on patio in front. Very tight. Table unstable. I side seating very noisy. Bathrooms need cleaning.

Excellent Dinner for Granddaughter’s Birthday

By SkiHostML |

We had a first class meal with very attentive service. We had decided to take our granddaughter to San Diego for her birthday and we had a remarkable meal at Pane & Vino. The owner served us at a nice table indoors that we selected. The food was excellent. I enjoyed the veal salto-boca (saltimboca) and my wife had the eggplant appetizer. The wines were a good match (Vermentino) and a glass of Barbera. We also enjoyed the acoustics as we were able to converse without issue.

Disappointing

By Al104 |

Very disappointing experience compared to other Italian restaurants we have eaten at in US. Stuffed mushrooms were heavy and tasteless. Pasta sauce seemed ready made and osso bucco unpleasant. Wine Ok but expensive for what is was. Service not friendly. Definitely worst meal of our holiday.

Cafe atmosphere italian style

By albertthedentist |

Nice restaurant on the main drag. Lots of people watching. We sat outside in this med size restaurant Our waiter was very attentive, Portions are large. I had the special with spaghetti /lobster, shrimp, scallops ,calamari, mussels and fish! It was great. My wife had the chilean sea bass which she enjoyed. Nice meal at reasonable prices. Fun location

Buyer beware

By vruvo |

Our waiter offered to put together a "family style" appetizer plate for a party of 7. When we received our bill, we were charged SIX FULL PRIZED appetizers totaling almost $103....even though the appetizers were plated together! Then an additional $2 was added to a Caesar salad order because we asked for anchovies. Even if the mediocre meal didn't leave a bad taste in my mouth, the upsell certainly did! One word.....tacky!

Great Italian Food

By Sheila C |

As an Italian, who knows good Italian food- I can highly recommend Osteria Panevino. It was a great dining experience with a great wine list and wonderful service and concern by staff.

Not Italian, bad food. Typical

By Satriale |

Not Italian, bad food. Typical touristic place with Italian name and non-Italian cousine. Overpriced, waiters trained to make you spend as much as possible and advising you with the dishes that are more convenientfor them. The dishes are NOT Italian, in the preparation and the taste. AVOID

A Nice Italian Restaurant

By FLB |

We were staying across the street at the AC Hotel and wanted a nice Italian restaurant nearby. There were four of us and we all enjoyed our meals. The portions are substantial and all of our pasta dishes were very tasty. They also offer a basket of yummy bread at no additional cost.

Traveling with a 1 yr old

By warnermrs |

My husband and I had an excellent dinner with our 1 year old daughter. The concierge at our hotel recommended Osteria Panevino and the crew at the restaurant did not disappoint. We sat on the patio and watched people passing by, this also allowed us to feel more at ease with our kiddo outside (less likely to disturb others). Extra dirty martini & ravioli de agnello = two thumbs up!

Lively, Food OK

By MRSTRAVELLER1 |

Loved the vibe at this buzzy, well established Italian Osteria in the heart of the Gaslamp Strip. And service whilst not attentive or particularly efficient was fun & charismatic. But food was only average+. My husbands meal was a 6 out of 10, mine somewhere below that. Rustic! Not cheap either.

Lunch

By Scielbi |

The food was good as was the service. All Sicilians cooking & working here, so you can't go too wrong. I would return here but try it for dinner the next time I am in town.

Good food and value

By travellingdoc50 |

Fast attentive friendly service.Lots of warm bread and garlic butter.Caesar salad good, artichoke salad a bit too buttery for wife's taste.Pollo (chicken) toscano juicy and flavorable.Filet mignon very tender and juicy as well w just emough mashed potato. Nice cappuccino to end. Prices reasonable basic salads $9-10, chicken mid 20s and filet mignon $42.Even glass Zinfadel for $6.50. Can't find glass of wine < $10 anywhere.Defintielt would go back, in contrast to de'Medicini restaurant.

Excellent

By sarare |

We were 4 adults and 3 children. We arrived without a reservation in advance. The table was beautifully arranged including white tablecloths and a variety of glass cups. The food is varied, fresh and very tasty. The prices are reasonable. The dishes are rich. The service is excellent, the atmosphere happy and helpful. A very enjoyable experience. Highly recommend.

Nice Italian Restaurant

By Mamjensen |

We stopped in for dinner on a whim. They seated us right away. The food was great and very authentic. My risotto was delectable. Our server was excellent. Lots of fun. We had leftovers to take home.

Authentic Italian Restaurant.

By Kirt W |

Authentic Italian Restaurant. We had the Pollo Parmegianno and the Lasagna. Both were excellent. Service was quite good as well. Finished off with vanilla gelato.

Good enough

By octavio b |

Pretty standard Italian fare you can get in any tourist heavy area. Host and server were very gracious and nice.

Very nice dinner!

By Lillian S |

We happened upon this restaurant, and I was so glad we did. The outside patio was perfect! we had cocktails and a light meal and our total was under $30! I couldn't believe it! We were entertained with people watching, the waiters were excellent and the food was good.

Excellent pinsa

By Giacomo S |

After a few days in California my wife and I were missing pizza, and this is where our wish was granted. Not real pizza, I would say more pinsa romano (for us Italians it is correct to call it that), but certainly good with quality ingredients. Friendly and very approachable staff, classic Italian style. I would happily stay here again.

Driest pizza ever

By C S |

Lovely restaurant and nice staff but the worst pizza ever, it was so dry we didn't eat it. Shame as the drinks were good but just not for us.

Great food and wine meets exceptional service

By Snagly |

Three of us took a table streetside and spent two hours dining and chatting with our servers (Juia and Maria), laughing and joking as we worked our way through a Salumi pizza starter (outstanding) and shared pasta dishes, including squid ink seafood, beef ravioli and sausage penne. The wine list is extensive and we took full advantage of the moderately priced Italians. Highly recommended.

Homemade pastas with Wow factor!

By cnbowser |

Wow is a world you will use often for describing the food! Home made pastas and house specials! We started with a wonderful and very lightly breaded fried calamari and shrimp appetizer with a fresh and flavorful caprese salad paired with Lovely wine. Then we had a lobster ravioli and an amazing Chilean Sea Bass on top of a bed of lobster roll risotto - special of the day. They also had another special of seafood pasta which looked wonderful at next table but couldn’t fit it in. Very knowledge and attentive service. Was able to sit outside in the lovely San Diego weather and people watch. When it got a little chilly we had heat lamps. Finished off the dinner with a lovely tiramisu. Only down side was it was pricey but great pasta and flatbread options too. I’ll be back on my next SD trip!

Delisimo !

By 122leanne |

Part of the Gaslight vice this Italian restaurant is a great choice! Experienced and knowledgeable staff and beautiful meal. Loved the soft pillowy gnocchi with delicate but creamy sauce and others praised their risotto and lasagne. Good wine choices by the glass so everyone could pick their own favs. Just sorry meals were so generous we had no room for dessert …

Noisy with People Enjoying Themselves

By Pat B |

I always love an Italian restaurant where everyone seems like they are family and the noise level indicates everyone is having a good time! We really enjoyed eating here. The dishes we enjoyed started with bruschetta with burrata. The bread was rustic and great, as was the cheese. Everyone also enjoyed the bread basket brought to the table. Entrees included the fresh tube pasta carbonara and pappardelle with ragu. Very large portions, we could have shared since we were traveling and would not be able to take home the leftovers. Fun dinner. The area requires you to valet park, and restaurant validated a portion of the charge.

Charming setting. great food.

By LinVA |

We needed to change the time of our reservation and the restaurant was very accommodating. Excellent service and food. DH had the veal ragu which was exceptional. I had a unique carbonara with bow ties which I adored and our grandson was very happy with pizza. Large serving size but it is the quality and unique twists on offerings that left us impressed and happy to recommend. Nice outside seating and homey decor inside. Excellent in every way.

Didn’t Live Up to Hype or Price

By BooBoo18069 |

This lace was highly recommended by the hotel. Chilean Sea Bass highly recommended but the portion was very small for the price. My estimate 4 oz at best. The lobster mashed potatoes triple the size of the portion of fish but lobster hard to find. I had the special seafood pasta which was good but came with a $52.00 price tag. For the prices we were disappointed

Stellar service, excellent food, reasonable price

By MelbourneSeashell |

Excellent food and the best service we have had in the US. Food was tadty and authentic, lots of choice even for vegetarian and gluten free.Domenico was great and his homemade crodino is worth coming for

So good, we went twice!

By babsinbc |

Osteria Panevino, a pleasant walk from our hotel on the edge of Gaslamp Quarter, was a wonderful discovery our first night in San Diego. My husband had the Polipo alla Griglia (grilled octopus, borlotti beans and more) and I, the Melenzane Farcite (baked eggplant stuffed with ricotta in a marinara sauce), both from the Antipasti menu, plus Caesar salads… more than enough food for us. The food was fresh, cooked just right and delicious. Our first visit was so enjoyable, we went back again and repeated the octopus appetizer as well as Cozze e Vongole in Umido (clams and mussels in wine sauce), a shared Caesar salad, finishing with the Limoncello Cake… just as delicious as the first night. Panevino’s staff is extraordinary and, if truth be told, Annalisa, our server on the first evening, was one of the reasons we returned. A longtime veteran at Panevino, Annalisa clearly loves her job and is also very good at it. In fact, all the staff we encountered were upbeat, hardworking and appeared to work well together. It was a delight to dine at this establishment and we will definitely return the next time we visit San Diego. Panevino is a popular place so reserve ahead or enjoy a cocktail or glass of wine at the bar while you wait.

Nice family dinner

By Tony J |

As you can see from my last review, the last time I reviewed this restaurant was seven years ago. Also, as you can see from my previous review this is one of my Gaslamp Quarter favorite restaurants for dinner. I used to travel here often on business and would always stop here for dinner. I returned here with my family of four for a 7pm dinner, which I booked on Open Table. We were lucky to park on a nearby street. When I arrived their General Manager Analisa recognized me. Analisa immediately arranged a very nice table for four outside along the street. They now have additional outside dining actually located on the street as do most other restaurants on the same street. I assume this was the result of COVID dining. Part of the street is blocked off. The place was packed with diners. We were lucky to get our table. I started with their raspberry passion with patron silver, fresh lime juice, sour mix and raspberry puree for $15. I also enjoyed my usual favorite ossobuco milanese veal shank slowly braised with red wine, over saffron risotto for $44.95. When I last visited the veal shank was served with the bone in. As you can see from my pic the veal meat is served removed from the veal shank bone. I miss my veal shank bone and marrow. This continues to be one of my best restaurants in the Gaslamp quarter. We were all pleased with our dinners and service. My total bill was $260 including gratuities. We all agreed we will continue to return here for dinner.

Nice place in Gaslamp district

Very nice menu, good wine & beer selections, in the north end of the Gaslamp district in San Diego. Enough choices for my vegan wife, also

Cioppino

By sheiksan |

Went here with wife to enjoy happy hour ($5 house wine) and ordered cioppino off the dinner menu. All was delicious, including the complimantary bread. Glad we went early because it filled up really fast.

Fresh delicious food!

By Steve P |

I have dined their twice and both meals were excellent. They make their pasta and sauces fresh for each order. So even though I have a garlic allergy, I was able to enjoy just about anything on the menu. The service is terrific and the noise level allows for conversation. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys great Italian food.

Great food and nice staff

By Nina |

We really enjoyed our dinner at Panevino! We had the homemade pasta (seafood and cabonara) and it was absolutely delicious, portions were huge! Prices are not cheap but absolutely reasonable considering the size and quality of meals! The staff was super nice and very accomodating!

...

By elia c |

Completely dissatisfied with this visit. The dishes are really under the normal expectation, since Italian cuisine is famous all over the world. The service is excellent but what matters mainly is the quality of the dishes, the first courses were liquid and too much

Great Service, Fun Atmosphere

By DerekDG |

My colleagues and I had a late reservation following our conference for the day. When we arrived our table wasn’t quite ready but they quickly set us up at the bar with a free drink while we waited for other diners to finish. Excellent service if you ask me. We ordered assortment of appetizers (definitely try the mozzarella and the calamari) and all had full dinners. I chose the cioppino on the special menu and it was amazing. Huge portion and prepared perfectly. Highly recommend - will definitely go back on a future trip.

Enjoyable evening, good food.

By jonnight |

Picked this restaurant after chatting with the hostess in the afternoon. Service was friendly and efficient without being too rushed. We shared a Caesar salad and Bruschetta starters and both were very good. Mains were also good and generous portions. The wine list was extensive. It was a very enjoyable evening.

Busy, tasty Italian restaurant on 5th

By GReyMaiden |

Ate here last night with business colleagues. The restaurant has a good ambience and service was fast and friendly. Crab Linguini was excellent and Calamari was also good. Prices are mid range, so the bill was reasonable. Good simple menu with some great seafood classics including g local crab, shrimp and lobster.

Excellent dinner

By IrvineAllAmericanMom |

What a lovely meal and great waiter...delicious salad and dinner too! Calamari was delicious and the salad too. Lobster ravioli was amazing

Real Sicilian food

By Veggielibrarian |

I had a disappointing experience in Little Italy and came to Osteria Panevino in Gaslight Quarter. Here I had a fabulous, authentic meal. Waiter Gian Carlo recommended wine and vegetarian options. Excellent cappuccino for dessert.

Get there early....

By sanjosejohn |

Went with my wife on a Friday night and got there around 6pm. Outside was already full and inside had a couple of tables open so we sat inside. The appetizer was the zucchini flour wrap with riccota cheese and then deep fried. Its like a mexican chile reano but much tastier. it was great. they bring you 4. they are pretty big. Wife has the ravioli which were good, I had the seafood pasta which was excellent. Our waitress was an Italian girl who brought us a tiramisu at the end because she said they were short a waiter that night and our food was a little slow in coming , so it was a freebee. The place at 630pm was hoping. So get there at 6pm or your gonna have a 45min wait...

Great night downtown

By Lanieburd |

It’s been way too long since I’ve been here. Did not disappoint. Simone was an awesome server. He was so much fun, pleasant and attentive. The food was excellent!

Just ok

By Stepmonstersusan |

Well it was okay. The one thing that irked us was we were asked if we wanted carbonated or still water. Thinking we just wanted plain ole water, that is what we chose. Well it was still water for $6.00 on the bill. Bummer! Had we known , we would have passed. That kind of put a sour taste on our mouth. We just stopped for a drink and appys but the water charge was a disappointment. It is a little far from the gas lamp section and out of vibe area. Just saying. It was just okay. That’s the best I can say right now.

Enjoyable

By In_pursuit_of |

Ate here at the end of a day of site seeing following a recommendation. We were glad we visited as we found a good menu and great service. What was nice was the offer made when we arrived to cook a different meal from those listed if we wanted it (provided the ingredients were available). We were told the pasta was made on site and found the restaurant to be a nice quiet venue at the time of our visit. The food was enjoyed and the portion sizes good.

Pasta Italiano

By Dick C |

If you want to feel like you are in Italy and experience real Italiano food like mama used to make then this is the place in San Diego. The atmosphere and the waiters and waitresses that speak broken English Italian remind you of what I call the Old Country. Great food and service, try it and see for yourself.

Great grilled quinoa tuna!

By ParisgalChicagoIL |

We had a lovely lively lunch catching up with dear friends who haven’t seen each other for several years! Charming little spot on busy Fifth Street in Gaslamp serving yummy Italian treats. The salad with grilled tuna was perfect on a warm summer day!

Unwelcoming and underwhelming

By Cath |

Had table booked on Fri evening at 20h30 - I know this is late by US standards but website said open until 23h00 and we arrived a few mins early. Owner seated us, seemed friendly, brought menus but did rush us to choose. We stalked him a little saying we wanted a break between courses - we chose the special 3-course menu - and a relaxed evening. He agreed saying no problem. But there clearly was! Main courses brought whilst we were still eating starters, when we challenged it, were told that kitchen closes at 21h30 so ….. ! By 21h50 chairs were stacked all around us, lamps on tables were turned off and owner ignored us! A nice waiter brought us desserts and said he was sorry we’d been rushed but nothing really he could do as owner wanted to close at 22h00. Food was actually ok - and good value - but attitude appalling and atmosphere totally lacking. A classic case of customers being put below owner in terms of priority and importance. A real shame - we are in week 3 of our Californian adventure and have been nothing but impressed with service levels in hospitality. We have eaten out in Santa Monica, Santa Barbara, Montecito, West Hollywood .. all first class. So we know it can be done. Jyst not here. A real shame.

Spectacular

Found this excellent eatery via TripAdvisor. Again not disappointed one bit.. family of 3 , apps dinner drinks coffee And desert . All scrumptious, great atmosphere . Our waiter Mario was attentive and super friendly . When we alerted him of or child’s allergy he became vested in her safety and our families enjoyment while at dinner.

Amazing

By Kenneth S |

My wife and I had just flown in from Massachusetts and were quite hungry. The restaurant opened at 4:00 PM and had happy hour. We ordered 2 drinks and three appetizers. The Polenta was fantastic with the pizza and calamari right up there as well. Drinks were well made and reasonable The waiter was quite welcoming and the manager was really fun to be around. The only bad part was that we were on our way to Temecula the next day so couldn't return the following evening. Definitely give this place a try.

Awesome Italian experience!

By DDeutsch12 |

We went with several couples so were able to try multiple dishes. You know you are in an authentic Italian place when all the servers are speaking Italian to each other. The restaurant has a cool energetic vibe, not too loud but playing fun music. We started with a sampling of appetizers, of which the grilled artichokes, baked eggplant with ricotta and spinach, and zucchini blossoms were fantastic. The fresh baked bread was also excellent. For the main courses, there were several highlights. The gnocchi was the best I've ever had, so light and fluffy. The homemade lobster ravioli was also great with an excellent light creamy sauce. The special of homemade fettuccine with clams, mussels, shrimp, and a whole lobster in a mildly spicy marinara sauce was phenomenal. Lastly, we watched a fettuccini dish cooked at another table in a huge wheel of parmesan that was quite the experience and looked amazing. Will get that next time for sure. The portion sizes are extremely large. The staff is what took this meal to the next level. They are all so friendly and fun, get along so well with each other, and provide excellent service. Gioia was our server, and she was very knowledgeable, attentive, and fun to talk with. She was also very flexible in accommodating substituting different taste options with the meals. It truly was like being having dinner with your extended family. Definitely a memorable experience that I can't wait to do again.

Mediocre and expensive

By ashmayovitz |

We arrived at 1900, place was half full but service was a bit slow. We ordered carpaccio for starter. Meat was ok but dressing was lacking flavor and the addition of palm hearts was pretty odd. For entrees we’ve order the ravioli stuffed with lamb and spaghetti ragu. Dishes arrived lukewarm and were average. I could barely taste the meat in the ravioli. To summarize, average food in a hip neighborhood equals hefty prices. I will definitely not return.

Good, but not great

By Tswdfm |

The location here in the Gaslamp district is great. Sitting outside is great for people watching. Food was good, but I was not blown away. I might give it another shot.

Terrible Server

By Tom |

At a recent visit to this restaurant my wife and I learned what it was like to be completely ignored by a waiter - who was not otherwise even busy. (He was standing in the middle of the room all meal so was easy to observe.) Each step of the way we had to call him over to get what we needed, from ordering wine, to ordering our meal, to getting the bread, to asking for our salad, to cleaning off our messy table at the end of the meal. He would not lift a finger while all the other staff seemed very busy. He was clearly above it all. The one time he did come over to ask if I would like a second glass of wine (I declined), he left my empty glass on the table. The food quality was average; the waiter ruined the overall experience.

Favourite Restaurant

A lovely restaurant with a great menu and (for the most part) excellent service. A particular mention for the warm welcome you receive on arrival from the lovely Irish girl. We liked it so much we returned for the last meal of this leg of the trip. You

Very good service, but food a bit stodgy

By Christopher D |

The restaurant food did not turn out be as good as we had hoped. The octopus starter was very chewy.

Early Dinner

By Ken D |

I am visiting the area to attend a friends daughter's wedding and went out for an early dinner and reviewed an ad about the restaurant and looked at the menu and decided to try it and was not disappointed, I had the menu item Ossobucco Milanese which very few restaurant make because it takes so long to prepare and it was excellent! The people were very nice and the service was great!

Italian Cuisine

By Alan C |

This little place is an institution in the Gaslamp District. The best Italian food and wine to be found in San Diego. The service was great and food outstanding. The menu is extensive but they will accommodate any special requests. We dined outside on the street patio which was perfect. Our server was very good but not overbearing. All in all one of the best meals we have ever had in the area.We will return on our next trip to the Gaslamp District.

Fabulous artichokes

By oveja |

We had lunch here on Black Friday around 2pm. The restaurant was quiet and the service excellent. We had artichokes prepared in lemon butter which were excellent. We also had pasta with clams, beet salad and mushrooms. All were well prepared and served efficiently. We were pleased, this being our first visit.

Average Quality and Service

By edvonlef |

My wife had Lasagna, but vomited a few hours later. I had a linguini pasta and it was fine. One service member was unfriendly and there were few clients dining. We wouldn't return, as there are many good restaurants in Gaslamp village.

I am back in San Diego and went to Panevino for dinner. I had the Chilean Sea Bass special which was excellent. We had the same waiter as one of my many times there in Febraury . He is great. I can't wait to go back.

Terrible dinner

By Rodrigo Chile |

The waiter asked us about kind of water, we choose sparkling and regular. Surprisely he brought 2 bottles (with 1 liter each one - $12 together). Who drinks 2 liter of water in a dinner ? The bread was cold. The food is not worth the price it costs. Finally, they already included 18% at the check even with bad service.

Great Authentic Italian food

This restaurant is so amazing. Brings us back when we were in Italy. The food were so delicately cooked with heart. The beet salad, the seafood spaghetti, veal with wine sauce and risotto , gnocchi and tomahawk steak to die for. Our palate were extremely satisfied. For sure we will be back when we visit Gaslamp San Diego.

Excellent Italian restaurant

Nice street side dining. Little noisy but that’s what you would expect eating street side. Super pleasant waitress, professional and attentive. Ordered salad and seafood pasta special. Salad was excellent as well as the main dish. Super flavorful. Huge portion, more than I could eat. Excellent cocktails, after dinner coffee and dessert. Can’t go wrong enjoying dinner here.

Christmas Dinner disaster.

By Steve B |

My girlfriend and I went to Panevino for Christmas dinner and it was horrible. The only reason I didn’t give a 1 rating is that the Caesar salad was very good. We reserved a table for 2 and specifically asked if the Chicken parmigiana was deep fried and was immediately told by the hostess that it wasn’t. When we arrived and asked the server Simone, he said it was but went to the kitchen and came back and said that they can grill it. Great. We were sat outside which was no big deal, until a family of 5 were sat directly beside us, where I had to get up from my seat to let tears of them squeeze behind me at a table almost adjoining ours as it was meant for 4 people max. Once the staff saw how uncomfortable they were squished beside us, they moved them to a new table, which was great for us. As they moved, Simone passed beside me and said loud enough for us to hear “disaster” and he wasn’t kidding. Our main courses, the chicken parmigiana and chicken Toscana had no flavor and Simone was no where to be found to offer us salt and pepper. After about 10 minutes, he “popped” by and asked how everything was. When I replied, “average at best”, he walked away without saying a word. He avoided us until we were ready to pay, dropped off the tab and walked away again without saying a word. He eventually came by, dropped off the credit card machine and walked away. He was so unemotional and obviously didn’t want to be there. This was the first and last time I’ll ever go there. Simone, time for a new career because you’re obviously miserable as a server.

Bad experience

This place was a really fuster-cluck. Super loud, crazy, unorganized. We had reservations but had to wait 40 minutes for an acceptable table that wasn't a foot away from the busy walkway where all foot traffic was being funneled into. Bread was stale, tough; we didn't eat it. Server was so overwhelmed (poor guy) that he was just running past us, then throwing the plates of food at us and running off. I won't blame it on our tilted table, but my own clumsiness: my wine glass ended up smashing to the floor. Server didn't care. We told him again, but he just said "OK" and ran off. Everybody ignored that broken glass, yet other servers and busboys were literally stepping and crunching on broken glass. I know they are overwhelmed, but I'm not choosing to drop almost $200 with my wife and put myself in that situation again. Was loud, unsettling, disorganized; in short, not a pleasant experience. Food (main entrees) were good; be aware that everything is very al dente here (I'm not lowering stars for this as it's personal preference and I know from traveling to Italy that most authentic Italian pasta is al dente like this was. We are not going back any time soon. Too many other great places in nearby vicinity which are better organized.

Family Run, Homemade Pasta

By YVRtoN |

While in town for business, a colleague and I went for dinner at this Sicilian family run restaurant. The service was warm and friendly, and the homemade Mezzelune Di Melenzane pasta (ravioli stuffed with eggplant) was delicious. I will go back there the next time I am in town to try other things from the menu.

great restaurant reasonable price as good as any in NYC

comfortable well spaced tables, excellent ambiance, welcoming staff, generous servings. we took left overs on plane next day; other passengers were jealous. very well known among locals, crowded on Monday night! received 20% discount from Courtyard Marriott just down the street. Cant recommend highly enough

It can go wrong.

PROs: nice location, slow but kind service, very, very nice menu. CONs: slow service, it can go wrong: we were offered an off menu Steak. 90USD. We got 3 of them. Mine arrived cold on one side and totally unsalted. 90USD. Conclusion: if you see other reviews, this place seems to work very well. I was probably unlucky, Yet, service is really slow. 2 shared starters, 4 main courses, no wine no beer. We ended with 120USD per person. Not outrageous, but it's good that you keep an eye on the off menus.

Very nice Italian, large dishes

We had pastas and it was very nice. The service was very friendly and food was good. The Tiramisu was nice as well. Parices are 23-28 dollars for most pastas.

Great before the park

Great appetizers, calamari, and main meal specials. Great spot in the Gas Lamp district of San Diego.

A Wonderful Evening

By Jeff C |

My wife and I met up with a friend for dinner on a Thursday night. We didn't really know what to expect, but were pleasantly surprised. The staff were knowledgeable about the menu, had a great sense of timing and were appropriately attentive. The bruscetta was outstanding, we each were happy with our entrees, and the lava cake was a great way to end the meal. We definitely would go again!

To forget about

By Carlo C |

This is a typical italian restaurant for non-italian who believe to eat true italian food. The raw material are not fresh but frozen and pasta is too much cooked and several dishes are presented with large use of creams (more similar to French cuisine than Italian). In San Diego is better to choose a different place.

Decent food, terrible service

By JL1026 |

We were staying in the Gaslamp quarter and looking for a good meal in town. After reading reviews we settled on Osteria Panevino. We were placed in a tiny corner crammed next to the table beside us. We were not drinking and did not order an appetizer and after saying no to those items it seemed our server lost interest in us. I had a few questions about the menu and I seemed to be annoying him as he was short with his responses. He did not understand one of my requests and instead brought me a salad I did not order. I ate the salad and did not make a fuss. When we were ready to order we had to wave him down and he was chatting with the bartenders and ignoring us at times. After he received our order I think it may have been the last time we saw him again until we got the check. Runners brought out our food. The food overall was average. Nothing blew us away. I ordered the Salmon which was fairly bland. I asked for a side of lemon butter sauce to place over the salmon which definitely improved the taste. We skipped dessert as we figured we could find a better option somewhere else and hopefully a restaurant with a better attitude. I would not recommend this restaurant for service alone. Go to one of the other spectacular places San Diego has to offer.

Great large group experience

By Urszula C |

We had quite a large group in town on business and Osteria Panevino had been recommended to us as a good place to host an informal dinner. I have to say, they lived up to expectations! The contact person was patient with all our changes and dietary requests and once on-site the staff were attentive to our needs, making sure we all fit at the table and checking in to make sure we were all happy. The food itself was delicious, I had a baked salmon that was good and the bruschetta as appetizers and bread with the meal were all amazing. The staff spoke Italian to each other which I took as a good sign, and the desserts were very tasty too. Overall, very good Italian food, small but fun restaurant, and excellent service- what more could you ask?

Wonderful Dinner at Osteria Panevino

Beautiful service at Panevino! The staff understands how to make business dinners relaxing and enjoyable. They picked the meal for us and took extra special care to make sure that our evening was enjoyable. We received really wonderful food at good prices.

One of the better tourist traps

By wilson17 |

I had hoped for better based on reviews. They have a huge outdoor seating, as well as seats inside. We had reservations, but the woman in the front greeting everyone on the sidewalk seemed to get most of their clients. Overall the food was ok- Caesar's salad dressing was too heavy, stuffed mushroom not really very good at all, decent veal papardelle, and a nice glass of CA wine. The daily pasta special sounded good, but the waiter left out the price. When asked, it was 50% higher than any pasta on the menu. Other than that, service was excellent.
