Real German Food at a Fair Price

By kgilbert78 |

We looked up German places on our GPS, and it led us here. Wow. It does not look like much from the outside and inside it's bit of German kitsch. But the food is great. Very authentic--with a couple of twists. The sauerbraten had a light cream sauce. One serving was enough for two (see the photo). The dill pickle soup was a good surprise. We also got a poppy seed streusel to go (one of my favorites). If I lived in Portland, I'd be a regular.

A True Family Owned/Operated Restaurant

By DewPortland |

Otto personally cooks the meals and Anita bakes the pastries. Their daughter and granddaughter work in the front of the house. This old building has very limited parking but it’s enough for the few tables in this small restaurant. There is no air conditioning, but ceiling fans keeps it comfortable. Upon entry, one sees Anita’s display of baked goods ready for carry out. The menu offers a variety of schnitzels, steak, liver, chicken, and more. It looked like a menu we had seen in Switzerland. The liver was the best we have ever eaten. We also enjoyed a pork schnitzel/bratwurst combo platter. Delicious! Save room for one of the premise baked desserts. We even ordered more to take home.

Love this place!

By JWaker53 |

We spent our fifth New Years Eve at Otto and Anita's for a delicious dinner. They had a special menu for the evening. I had the most delicious Steak Diane and dill pickle soup. What a treat! The people are so helpful and friendly. My friend ordered dessert to go, the most amazing home made large apple strudel for $4.50. Don't miss this fantastic place!

Highly recommend - Amazing food!

By WindhorseManor |

A group of us decided to go here for dinner. We all ordered different things and everyone was very happy with their choices. I had the Curry Wurst which I hadn’t had since I was last in Berlin. It was very good, in fact better than what I had in Berlin. It’s a small place and the staff were hustling, but it was a Saturday night. We were happy we made reservations. The homemade goodies wrapped up to-go that we saw in the front when we came in looked amazing. If you want any, grab them on your way in as they may not be there when you’re finished eating. I highly recommend checking them out if you’re in the area.

Cool little German restaurant

By genoteich |

Very small but high quality. My family found this place for my birthday dinner and we were very pleased with the the quality of the dishes and the great service. Yes, the dill pickle soup is excellent. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Just like in Germany

By RNDMD |

We are fortunate to live and work close to this wonderful family owned and family run restaurant. They treat everyone like a guest in their home and strive to make your experience a good one. We have never had a disappointing meal here, and we take visitors here often, who always rave about it. Sometimes they have a cheese and pretzel fondue that is delicious and fun to eat; ask if they have it available. Lecker, lecker!!

Don't miss this place

By keelx2 |

This small family-owned restaurant on a little side street in a wonderful artsy neighborhood never fails to hit the mark for just what you want. Lunch was wonderful, and the fact that they have 1/2-sized schnitzels (four styles) makes it a good place to go for a rainy lunch. I've been here many times and will continue to return; service is fantastic and the food meets that rating. I sometimes feel like I've been transported to a mountain town near the Danube. Oh, and don't skip the dill pickle soup. It sounds like something that is supremely miss-able, but I can't go to this restaurant without a cup of this nectar.

Like Having Dinner at Your German Gramma's House

By Dan H |

We love this place. Nothing fancy, very relaxed atmosphere. But the food...schnitzels, bratwurst, and other traditional German specialties. Portions are generous, and food is always cooked to perfection. And, don't forget the Dill Pickle soup, a specialty...it's green, salty, "dill pickley" and fantastic. Top your dinner off with some homemade strudel...I never have enough room and have to take it home. There's usually enough for 2-3 people. The only thing missing is the polka music played on an accordion...

Great food and great price

By SenatorJerome |

Our visit to Portland for celebration of a birthday in our family resulted in a request for German food. We picked Otto & Anita's from reading reviews on this site. The on tap German pilsner beer was tasty and refreshing. I didn't have the dill pickle soup but the two persons that did wanted seconds. It was that good. I had the goulash soup and it was very good. The main courses ordered and presented were excellent and delicious along with filling. No room for desert so we took the strudel to go. Great German food and great price.

Great food - Greater Desserts

By Carroll G |

My family and I enjoyed a meal here with sausages, schnitzel, cabbage rolls and spaetzle. We REALLY enjoyed the cakes afterward!

A bit of Germany in Mulnomah Village

By Mike M |

Excellent food with a german twist. The Dill pickle soup is exceptional. Good selection of beer. A little tight on space, but they have two spaces for large groups.

Authentic food

By shonzi |

Very down to earth place with the best German sausages and schnitzels you could want. Oh and the pastries for sale at the front were frikkin awesome too. Try the black forest cake - you will never eat another store bought black forest again after that, sorry to say.

Great German atmosphere

By Maureen B |

We've eaten several times at Otto & Anita's in the Multnomah Village neighborhood. Their salads are fresh and delicious, and I love their chicken entrees accompanied by fresh carrots, green vegs, and roasted potatoes -- all with a wonderful light sauce. Anita's desserts are outstanding and you can also buy some to take home. Service is very friendly!

Got Schnitzel?

By Lizabeth S |

Total comfort food - reservations recommended. do not be deceived by looks - this is a small gem located in the Multnomah Village area and well worth the hunt to find it. I can't wait to go back.

We were in Germany for an hour.

By beergardenboy |

Wife took me to lunch here for my birthday. Nice pick! Everything is home made including the incredible desserts. Went in with high expectations for the Dill Pickle Soup. It didn't disappoint. Wowzer! Brat and schnitzel were very homey, German and delicious. Desserts were awesome. We had the coconut cake, fresh, not too sweet and a huge slice. And the marionberry cheesecake. Terrific. Everything was freshly cooked and freshly prepared. You could feel the chef truly cared about what went on the plate. The decor is homey German/Bavarian. Simple and quaint. This was our first visit to Otto and Anita's. We cannot wait to go back.

German home cooking in Multnomah

By jan m |

Nestled in the Multnomah district, this small cafe can be hard to find. Their famous dill pickle soup is great, good menu selections on German food. Liked the schnitzel and the sausages were delectable as well. The waiter was very proficient in describing the menu items. On Friday evening, the desserts can be bought at discounted prices!

Good German Food at a reasonable price

By ForestGrove |

Dill pickle soup was something I had never thought of and I love dill pickles and Dr Pepper, fried hamburger dills, etc. Try it! Snitzels were also very good. Was lunch so I didn't explore the beers. Returning very soon with friends. This is one of the rare places we even had desert.

Fantastic and Authentic German food!

By Rick U |

Found this restaurant via Google. We were looking for a German restaurant in this area and this one read well. We didn't have reservations (recommend you get one) but were lucky enough to be early and get seated right away. The waiter recommended the dill pickle soup which sounds kind of funky but is really really good. We all (3 of us) ordered the combo Weinershnitzl and bratwurst and this dish was truly outstanding. We finished with a shared piece of German Chocolate cake and when each of us took a bite we couldn't believe how good something could be! We will be back!

Good Germaan Food at a Great Price

By Bill D |

We frequently travel in Germany & Switzerland and Otto & Anita's gives us a chance to have authentic Bavarian food in Portland. The Dill Pickle soup, while not true German should not be missed. They have a good selection of dishes as well as good beer.

Small and Friendly great food!

By SuznBren |

Went today with a big group of folks and not one of us had a bad meal. GREAT service, nice, clean and friendly place but small. Food was FABULOUS!! Veggies cooked to perfection, sauces devine and the pork tender, tasty and a perfect serving! Desserts galore and more to take home if you wanted! Price were extremely reasonable. I would go again in a heartbeat. We were all saying on the ride home we wanted to go again!!!

European Delight

By daniel t |

A go-to spot close to home for a taste of Germany. Friendly staff, consistently good food, and good for a budget.

strange experience

By Flintstone10 |

We are a German family living since some time in Portland and hoped to get some authentic German food. We went for the Wiener Riesenschnitzel - which was quite different from what we expected and from what we know from Vienna. It was too thick, too small and the bread crust was soaked in the sauce (which does not belong at all to a Wienerschnitzel). We asked for a Potatoes Salad together with the Schnitzel - but this was ignored by the friendly, but not attentive waitress. Honestly, we were happy to be home again and drink a good Austrian Obstler to get rid of this taste. Sorry that we cannot join the enthusiasm from the other travelers - this was NOT like a good German restaurant.

Just like old-Europe

By Dankwart K |

You will find Otto and Anita's Schnitzelhouse right in Multnomah village in South-West Portland. if you like good Bavarian or German food you have come to the right place. The food is excellent. With an additional glass of wine, you can't go wrong, without breaking the bank. The staff is very good and efficient. You can find (free) parking space either right at the entrance or within a block or two..

Hidden Gem: Come eat in Germany

By daniel t |

Step into this hidden gem and you will be transported to a simple German kitchen with simple German food that will satisfy. The side dishes are remarkable (spinach and spaetzel, can you hear me?) and the main dishes all taste like home. Low key service, consistent menu and cooking, and really great neighbors.

I Felt Like I Stepped Into Germany

By SassyGirlJenna729 |

Myself and a few co-workers opted to eat here for one of my farewell lunches. I randomly saw Otto and Anita's one day driving through the Village at lunch, and I vowed to return and eat. I felt like I entered another world. We were the first ones there for lunch, and I decided to go for the full experience. Dill Pickle Soup and Swiss Chicken with Spaetzle. Everything was delicious!!! The Dill Pickle soup...out of this world!! And, they give you the recipe when you leave! Hand-painted murals adorn the walls, and a bevy of baked goods greeted us as we walked in. Of course I had to get the German Chocolate Cake. Thinking about it now makes my mouth water. Definitely worth the trip. And, the service was exceptional!

A little bit of Germany in Multnomah Village

By TnEShlaes |

This is a small neighborhood basement restaurant with a wonderful German menu. I think the food is better than anything that I had on my one trip to Germany. They have it all: different types of schnitzels, dumplings, spatzel, goulash and great homemade pastries and desserts. They usually have a steak dish every night too. Their menu even includes a delicious Indonesian rice dish. My favorite is the Hungarian goulash! You can call ahead to order it since it is not always on the menu! Prices are reasonable. They have German beers and wine too. And yes, they have Dill Pickle Soup! There is a meeting room available free of charge for large groups.

great food

By Rick K |

Always great food and supper nice people. I first had his meals many years ago when he was the chef at the Trenon restraunant. His wife also makes very tasty pastries. I am never disappointed. His vegetables are unbelievable, and I have never been a big fan of vegetables.

Black Forest Cake…Yum!

By frozentundramn |

Visiting from Minnesota to celebrate mother’s 85th birthday…so we wanted a super special cake. We contacted Otto and Anita’s and pre-ordered a Black Forest Cake to go. It was delicious and a real treat for the young and old attendees.

Great Meal

By DonnyTrump |

My family and I went there for dinner recently as I wanted some good schnitzel. First off, it looked incredibly tiny from out front, but it was nice inside. Our waiter (Otto, I think) was very helpful. I got the Jagerschnitzel (because I also wanted to try the spatzle) but I had it breaded (weinerschnitzel style) with the sauce on the side at Otto's suggestion. We each got some type of schnitzel and each was good. One note: definitely order the dill pickle soup. It sounds weird but was really good. One quirky thing with the restaurant is if you order a mixed drink, they make it in the kitchen. The beer was also good. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves at Otto and Anita's.

Good small restaurant

By ogibbs |

Tried Otto and Anita's upon arrival for my first trip to Portland. It is a good small local, very laid back, German restaurant. The schnitzel good. The jaeger sauce could have been a bit thicker, but it was quite tasty. Not great, but quite satisfying at reasonable price.

Real Homemade German Food

By Frank C |

Portland is blessed with some of the best eating in the country. In the area of German food, we have a very good local chain (Gustav's) and some excellent German delis. Otto and anita's is an excellent example of great German cooking in the home style mode. The menu has all the classics and a rich assortment of less common but excellent entrees. We went for lunch. I had the wurst and schnitzel special which was tasty and accompanied by appropriate German sides. My wife had an "Swiss Chicken" which was a crispy chicken breast with a light fondue sauce and a touch of wine sauce. It was excellent. If you are not a local, use your map app to find it as the streets in the area are not exactly straight. You can't go wrong at this place.

Very Cosy German

By richard g |

Loved our meal-especially the calf’s liver! We all left stuffed even before desert and the next time we’ll pace ourselves more to try the sweets! Nice to be in the Multnomah Village to walk around afterwards! Nice

Can't go wrong

By 6x6elkslayer |

Can't go wrong in the little restaurant. With the decor and menu it makes one feel if one was in Europe. Great bavarian desserts and spirits.

Gut Geschmeckt

By J J |

This meal was the perfect complement to a long day of snowshoeing at Mt. Hood. Pros: 1. Authentic German food from jaegerschnitzel to sauerkraut. 2. Their dill pickle soup is unique and delicious. 3. Ask for the red cabbage side which wasn't on the menu but worth a taste. 4. Anita's desserts are phenomenal. Excellent german chocolate cake, raspberry, apple and poppy strudel. 5. German beer on tap. 6. Excellent service. 7. Reasonable prices. A generous side costs $2.50 and the average dinner is around $12-14. Cons: 1. Do not let the decor and atmosphere dissuade your interest when arriving at this restaurant. The decor, tableware and interior resembles a VFW hall or K of C lounge more than a German restaurant.

Feels Like You're a Guest in a German Home

By h22101 |

We enjoyed our meal here. In comparison with a place back home in DC, the food was only good, not fantastic, but it was a fun diversion. We enjoyed finding it in tucked-away Multnomah Village, and we liked the ambience of the little room that felt like someone's home. It was a bit hot on this August evening and the wait-staff was sweating it out. They are lovely, and make the place feel even more homey. Our waitress brought us some pickle soup to try, on the house, and my daughter loved it. If you want German and don't happen to have any relatives to visit, you can go to Otto & Anita's and get a home-cooked meal.

Wonderful German food!

By 1900Carol |

This is like going to a little German restaurant on any side street in Germany. Reservations are a must many times. Outstanding strudels and deserts prepared daily which you can also take home. Wienerschnitzel and rahmschnitzel,,,,wonderful!!!

DILL PICKLE SOUP!

By Linda T |

We've eaten at Otto & Anita's three times, each has been a success! The Dill pickle soup is not to be missed! Ditto for the eclairs at the end of the meal! The atmosphere is fun and Bavarian. The staff is friendly and accommodating. We never felt rushed. We felt very welcomed. Everyone, at each visit, enjoyed everything they ordered.

Outstanding and truly authentic

By robhammann |

We had a great experience here. We brought our Swiss exchange student. She fully approved of the German cuisine. Dill pickle soup is as advertised. I had a cup. Bowl might have been too rich. Schnitzel was fantastic. This is like eating at grandmas house.

❤️🇩🇪❤️ Most authentic German food you can find

By manuela_oregon |

If you crave Schnitzel and Spaetzle, this is the place to go. The restaurant is located near Multnomah Arts Center in Portland. There is street parking in front of the restaurant or you can park around neighborhood streets. We like the mom-and-pop-style atmosphere, with lots of German memorabilia on the walls. The menu offers a great selection of different versions of Schnitzel, Spaetzle, Pasta, German beer, German wine, and German desserts (mostly cakes and pastries). Their signature dish is the super yummy Dill-Pickle-Soup. You want to try it because it is wonderfully green; and it’s a great appetizer. We tried Zigeunerschnitzel (with a paprika tomato sauce at is mildly spicy), Rahmschnitzel (cream sauce and mushrooms), and Wiener Schnitzel (fried). For dessert we had eclairs, tiramisu cake, and raspberry strudel. Everything is fresh and made from scratch. Our waitress was very friendly, always had a smile on her face beside the fact that restaurant was packed to the last seat and she really had all her hands full. We enjoyed the food and had a great time there. The place also has an adjacent room for small gatherings (not sure how many it seats, you need to call for that). I highly recommend the place and we will be back soon!

Excellent German food

By Angie F |

I lived in Germany 3 years and this food took me back to the country. I loved the Schnitzel and the sides. I especially Love the liver & onions. Two large pieces of liver and grilled onions. They also sell pastries.

Just got back from Germany went to Otto and Anita's

By Mike M |

Just returned from an extended visit to central Europe. Ate lots of German food over the course of a month. Came back to Portland and headed over to Otto and Anita's for a test. I will say that our meals last evening were on a par with the best we had in Germany and actually better than most. I had a combination plate and dill pickle soup. My wife had a cabbage roll and dill pickle soup. All a thumbs up. This is an unassuming place. The building is old and funky. The place is not large and can easily fill up. The service is personal and good. The food is great and the wine and beer list is long. Desserts are a major thing here too. (Not for me as the portions were large and I ate it all.) I also will note that the house bread was excellent.

Very Nice Meal

By West-Morry |

We were a party of four on a casual business dinner, and my partner recommended this restaurant. It is very small, quant, out of the way German theme restaurant. I had the trout (pictured) and it was quite good. My partner had the Dill Pickle Soup. (Signature Dish) and it was different but tasty. This is a family owned restaurant as our server was their daughter. She did a very nice job and took good care if us. I was surprised how many regulars were dining in the middle of the week... That is a good sign. I would recommend this restaurant if you are looking for a very casual dining German experience. ENJOY WEST-MORRY

If you enjoy German food you will enjoy your meal at Otto and Anita's

By Trish1946 |

The schnitzel was excellent (we have eaten schnitzel in many German, Austrian and Swiss villages). The entire meal was perfect as was the Marionberry Cobbler. The location and building are a little quirky (this is Portland) but clean.

An enjoyable dinner evening

By Johann32 |

My wife & another couple visited Otto & Anita's, 3025 SW Canby Street, Portland, Oregon recently for an evening dinner. The resturant is very clean; family run with their daughter doing the serving. We had the Jeager schnitzel with Mushroom gravy which was very tasty. The meal came with their famous Dill Pickle Soup, which is a "must order" if you visit their resturant. Inside gives the appearance of a real German "Gasthaus".

Don’t miss this Gem. Or just become a regular

By bbaker5555 |

Don’t know how I have missed trying this place. Family owned and the pride shows. Great favorites that taste great and at a great price. Lunch is an amazing deal. Please try it!!!

Dill pickle soup????

By Phantom41 |

We were looking for a place near us in Lake Oswego and thought we'd try German. This place had good reviews so we went. Luckily we had reservations. The place was slammed and small. No reservations meant a minimum 1 hour wait. Only two waiters on a Saturday night so service was very slow. However if you like schnitzel they have 7 varieties plus a special board. Very good meals with nice pork loin and sauce. We tried the house special soup...a nice bright green pickle soup. Sounds gross but actually very good. Deserts were excellent and all baking was done in house. Reminded us of a small restaurant in southern German. Food overall much better than a lot of other German restaurants in the city. Give it a try and sample the soup. The owners are also the chefs so food prep was spot on.

Friday German class dinner

By Rich A |

My son invited us to go since his German class was meeting to speak German. We seated in the main restaurant without a wait but the restaurant quickly filled up after 630. Food was great. I spent childhood in Germany and love German food so have some preferences. Much better than gustovs in my opinion. The schnitzel dinner was large. 3 people with dinner one beer and apple strudel came to 75 including tip.

Wonderful Food and Quaint Atmosphere

By Cheryl H |

We have missed having a quality German restaurant since the Rhinelander closed in Portland. My friend and I visited for noon lunch. We totally enjoyed our food and will be returning. The baked goods for sale as you leave are very desirable and good!

Best German Food Ever!!

By BonniebCalif |

We visited Portland for a week with our family, after reading the reviews, we decided to try Otto & Anita's. Well, the food was so delicious, even the non meat-eaters in our group fell in love with this place. To make a long story short, the food was amazing, they went out of their way to make us comfortable and accomodate our crazy eating habits. We ate there twice and had carry out once. A record for us. Fantastic service and the pastry is also very good.

A little touch of Germany in charming Multnomah Village

By Mary B |

We tried Otto and Anita's at the suggestion of a friend in Multnomah Village. To avoid the challenge of parking, we met for lunch at 11 AM and we parked behind the restaurant. Two in our party had the dill pickle soup and LOVED it. Rumor has it that it was started as a joke by the chef but is now a customer favorite. Two had the 1/2 order Kaiserschnitzel which is a tasty slice of pork loin with a delicious caper cream sauce. The third in our party had the Swiss chicken which was a special of the day. All dishes had sides of fresh carrots and spinach and spaetzle cooked perfectly. There were loads of tempting pastries available and next time I will pick one up to take home. The German Chocolate Cake was just right and declared authentic by one in our party who had lived in Germany. All in all, the restaurant is homey and rustically decorated with charming murals. And the waitress was so friendly and helpful that we felt like we were in a German home.

Fantastic German Get your schnitzel on!

By kristin L |

Love everything about this funky little place in Mult village. Everyone raves about the dill pickle soup and it is all that. But the main dishes are superior, schnitzel and spätzle with homemade sauces are out of this world. Don't come here if you are on a diet, it's full of rich flavor and everything is made fresh in house. I just hit the gym extra after coming here, it's a treat and worth the calories! Service is top notch and the family who owns/cooks/works here are the best! Do not forget to save room for dessert-HEAVEN on a plate! We often take pastries or brownies home to nosh on the next few days.

A warm, inviting place for delicious German “home” cooking.

By Robert M |

I was fortunate to run across this place while searching for a reasonably-priced European restaurant in Portland. It’s off the beaten path in an unassuming location. Inside, it feels like you are visiting somebody’s home. The staff was extremely warm and attentive. We had bread on are table almost instantaneously. The soup offering was dill pickle soup. Sounded disgusting, but I’m always willing to give a house specialty a try. I was pleasantly surprised by the mild, creamy flavor. I had the Rahmscnitzel and my daughter had Maltaschen (I hope I spelled those correctly). We were both pleased with our entrees. Then there was dessert. Mmmm ... many mouthwatering options. I settled on the Marionberry cheesecake, which was light, fluffy and tasty. My daughter had the Black Forest cake. I had a taste of hers at the end. I was surprised to find it apparently was soaked in a liquor, or so it seemed to me. She slept well that night! But wait, there’s more! There were piles of to-go streusel and other tempting baked items by the entrance. I couldn’t leave without taking some home. Haven’t tried them yet, but they look scrumptious! If you’re looking for fancy, fine dining, go somewhere else. Otherwise, visit Otto and Anita’s! On a Saturday night with I-5 flowing smoothly, it took us about ten minutes from the Moda Center. Prices were quite reasonable, especially for someone coming from Seattle!

Nom nom nom nom

By Bettyinoregon |

My son selected this place from a reviews site...and off we went. The place has very little parking, and it's exterior, well, to be honest, and interior are not couture, but the food, oh the food is a delight. I grew up in a family that ate a lot of German food, as my dad was an immigrant. I miss good German food. Spaetzle is a favorite, and I love a good sauce and a schnitzel. I was so impressed with all the dishes. However, the dessert, oh my poor tummy, I am so sorry how I stretched you out, but I had to try the desserts. The eclairs are made there, and they are as close to heaven in chocolate as the earth has to offer. By all means, try this place. They CARE if you like their food, and the service is wonderful. It's a breath of fresh air in a market where restaurants seem to feel you owe them the experience of coming to dine with them, and yet deliver so little most of the time. This is old fashioned, good solid food. Yum!

Delicious lunch-highly recommended

By Linda |

Best German Food! We have dined here many times and the quality and skill of the chefs is outstanding. Our server was very busy today! Nevertheless service was excellent and food was delicious. We had The special-Swiss chicken with spaetzel, sweet braised carrots and spinach. It was so good. Black Forest cake for dessert and the coffee was so good too.

neighborhood Gut!

By john t |

We've seen Otto and Anita's tucked away in Multnomah Village for years. It is a bit unusual, accessed by a door that seems below street level, and decorated with casual paintings of the German countryside, with cows, castles and mountains. The first impression is that this is a simple place, making the most of its location. A warm welcome from "zer Matt" broke the ice, and we were seated promptly without a reservation. A quick look at the menu revealed lots of schnitzels and wursts, with spaetzels and classic German dishes. There were also a handful of daily specials, which all sounded interesting. We ordered beer from a limited selection of drafts (a pilsner, a hefe and a third choice), and a glass of wine, which was similarly limited in selection. Drinks aren't the reason to visit this place. The food, however, was excellent. Nobody ordered an appetizer, but we did get to sample the famous pickle soup, served warm and savory! It almost made us pucker! We tried a couple of the schnitzels (with "Gypsy" gravy and mushroom gravy), the superb sauerbraten (a special of the day), and a tasty bratwurst. All the meat dishes were tender and very flavorful, rich with the earthy touch of mushrooms (Jager), zesty with paprika (the Zegeunerschnitzel), or slightly sour (the sauerbraten). Sides included rot kohl, spaetzel, and spinach. Hearty helpings disappeared quickly this evening! We finished with a piece of rum chocolate cake. Our waiter checked in on us frequently even though he had the entire room that evening. what a nice surprise to find this place. We will be back!

Tastes Like Home Cooking

By 819sherylp |

I got the feeling that I was eating a homemade meal. The food is very good. The employees are very friendly and accommodating. I'm dieting, so they were very willing to accommodate my requests. There was a small child in our group and they served her a hot dog and a very appealing display of fruit. They even gave her a cup of gummy bears. The child was very pleased with her meal. They have a wide selection of homemade pastries available for purchase.

Quirky, but not bad

By Hilopatty |

Dill pickle soup? sauerkraut soup? Hardly staples of German high cuisine, but they do make this restaurant stand out from the crowd. We ordered both on a recent visit -- mainly out of curiosity. They were both pretty good. Not so much that I would ask for the recipe. But certainly interesting and better than the names might suggest. Onto the main courses. The half serving of Wiener schnitzel I ordered was not the same as you would find in Vienna. But it was very good nonetheless. And my companion's plate of breaded and fried oysters was delicious. For dessert we shared a (huge) serving if Marion berry cobbler with ice cream. That, to me, was the high point of the meal. For those looking for fine German dining, this may not be the place. Still, for anyone who wants a non-franchise, offbeat meal, at a reasonable price and with great service, this fills the bill nicely.

Athentic German Food - homemade and delicious

By Deborah W |

I've been to several German cities and have tasted food from many regions in Germany. This felt authentic, and was delicious. Also, felt like we were dining in a German family home. Good food, not gourmet, but fresh and many dishes to choose from. Good value as well. Will definitely be back!

Great food & warm hospitality!

By Clementine1877 |

My Husband is from Bavaria so my parents wanted to suprise him with some great homemade Bavarian food. We were impressed! The food was great, good beer/wine selection in a warm friendly atmosphere! The business is Family owned and operated with food made from scratch. We will definately be back!!!!

A very busy night!

By Kevan R |

It didn't detract from the quality of food or service at all. Just couldn't bring ourselves to try their dill pickle soup, even though that is one of their specialties. The bread rolls with real butter were excellent. My wife enjoyed her veal schnitzel with spätzle substituted for potatoes. My pork schnitzel with mushrooms was perfectly balanced with the spätzle, carrots and spinach. The only slight disappointment was apple strudel which did not have flaky pastry, and was soggy, but tasted fine. A shout out for our server who was brilliant all evening in a packed dining room. Should have asked for his name, but he might be the only American in this German restaurant. Otto and Anita really do exist, cooking in the kitchen.

great neighbourhood eatery

By Kathi L |

Great neighbourhood restaurant (Multnomah Village). We had a family dinner(8) there. The service is good and the menu too. From soup to dessert, everything was fresh and wonderfully prepared. Be sure to try the Dill Pickle soup! And their Coconut Cake rivals the famous Coconut Cake at the Room without a Key in Honolulu.

Celebrating a birthday.

By Goodgrammy |

My hubby chose Otto and Anita's for his birthday dinner. We went with our friends, for a nice German meal. It was fantastic!! The food was incredible, the service excellent. An all around good time. We each had a different variety of schnitzel. Loved the spaetzle. The dill pickle soup is a must have. It might sound strange, but it was very good. We will definitely go back. Oh, did I forget to mention their desserts?? Out of this world. Huge portions, large variety, and prices were low. All around a great experience. I wish I could give it 6 stars!!

Wonderful food and friendly service!

I have had many wonderful family dinners at Otto and Anita's. The food is great! You have to try their dill pickle soup. It is an original! The schnitzels are very good, tender meat with yummy gravy over homemade spaetzle...how can you go wrong? The owners are fabulous, too -- my daughter left her purse there on New Years' Eve and they stayed open for us to get back and pick it up. Awesome!!

Great Little Place

Went here after searching specifically for German food in the Portland area. Had never even heard of this place but it had glowing reviews so we tried it and it was wonderful. The schnitzel was great and hit the spot! We will be back! The only thing that could make it better was the atmosphere/decor but who cares when the food is this good.

AS GOOD THE 2ND TIME

Small slice of Bavaria in Multnomah Village

We had the wienerschnitzel and bratwurst combo plate. It was very good. We have just returned from a 3 week trip to Germany & Austria and this meal made us feel like we were back in Europe! The bread was fresh and warm. The dill pickle soup was an interesting taste experience. The mustard served with the brat was very good. Each meal included sauerkraut, sautéed vegetables, and fried potatoes just like in Bavaria! The waiter was attentive and efficient without being overbearing. We ordered the raspberry strudel to share and he delivered it split on two plates.

Underwhelmed

The attraction of this restaurant eludes me. While the food is adequate, it is not excellent and does not live up to the standards of good German/Bavarian fare. The decor is depressingly tacky and the ventilation poor. Expect to leave the place with your clothes and hair reeking of stale cooking oil. The host greeting and seating you is a mumbling character wearing a dirty undershirt. The place needs an upgrade, and the host should wear more appropriate attire.

Homemade German/Bavarian food

Wow, was this good... comparing it to Germany food as well as Chicago/German food, this is the best homemade German you can get. The Dill Pickle Soup was very interesting & tasty, but the Split Pea soup was just out of this world. Reasonable pricing, too. Bread served w/ the meal was tasty & light. My ONLY complaint was that the Porter Beer (which had a German sounding name) was quite hopped... more like an IPA... next time I'll try the Heffeweizen beer. Did I mention that the Split Pea soup was the best EVER??!! (I'll probably dream about it). Everything was freshly prepared... very easy to tell by taste. PS Cute small venue German atmosphere

Good Homemade German Food and Unique Soup

Small somewhat hard to find "Schnitzel House" in the Multnomah Village area in Portland. Service was very good and the prices are reasonable. You feel like you are in a German family home .Wide variety of schnitzels and other German dishes. Our party tried 4 different schnitzels and each one appeared and tasted authentic and were of high quality. Served with fresh rolls, vegetable and spatzel. Soup and salad are an extra charge and a MUST for a starter is the Dill Pickle soup. Recipe is available at the restaurant web site as is the full menu. Cocktails and beer available. They serve a great martini. Very good desert menu. Parking close by can be hard to find. Reservations accepted. Open for lunch and dinner.

Oh so good

This is the real deal. Spouse, who is German heritage, says their apple strudel is as good as his mother made. That's a huge compliment. So far, we've enjoyed sausage sandwich, hot wienerschnitzel sandwich, knackwurst sandwich, the dill pickle soup (could eat it by the bucket), and desserts: tiramisu, chocolate rum cake, strudel, peanut brittle. The building is older, renovated, charming. Staff was extra cordial. So far we've done takeout, but will return for in-house dining as soon as possible.

Feels like you are dining at your German grandparents home!

We've dined at Otto and Anita's several times now and we were completely happy on each occasion. The atmosphere is a bit quirky. I'll call it charming rather than tacky...but it is a close contest. I wish they would remove the horrible fluorescent ceiling light in the lobby, but appearance clearly doesn't matter to these good folks. What does matter is the food. And it is very good! Of course you'll try the dill pickle soup...and you'll love it. And each entree we have ordered has also been very good. Most everything comes with very simply prepared and very delicious seasonal vegetables as well as hot-from-the-oven bread. Service on each visit was extremely efficient and friendly. On one visit the owner's daughter was working and she was very pleasant. There are lots of house-baked dessert options and everything we have tried has been wonderful! Grab a German beer or two and you'll make it a wonderful visit!

Great Food and Atmosphere!

This was our first visit to this Bavarian cultural restaurant in Portland and we will definitely go back. The food was delicious! Wonderful pre-wrapped pastries ready for take out were available for purchase in the front of the restaurant. We loved the dill pickle soup and brought home a recipe. Our large family gathering of 21 was seated in their banquet room and the walls were painted with German scenes...delightful! Service was exceptional. This place is a must to visit!

Excellent German Food at good price

Great little German restaurant in Multnomah Village in Portland. Clean, great German Pilsner, excellent service, and wonderful food. We had lunch which offered 1/2 servings of dinner entrees. The dill pickle soup was awesome...great flavor. The spatzle were done just like you would get in Baveria. We took home some cherry strudel and it was delicious. We will return in the future.

Otto's in the kitchen and it's worth it

This small restaurant is a great value and the meal we ate was delicious. Service was timely. The deserts...just make sure you make reservations early if you want the carrot cake.
