The food was like a work of art and flavors that excite the senses!

By Miriam D |

Visiting SF I wanted to have Japanese food and was truly feeling blessed to have found this restaurant. Cameron, the General Manager and Shaun, my host, made the evening an extraordinary night out! The flavor and presentation of the food was simply indescribable! There is so much care in the preparation of the food that it is hard to believe you are not sitting in Japan! If you want your night out to be an experience for yourself, go and visit Ozumo. Extraordinary, sensational, delightful, relaxing, delicious! This is a meal you will never forget! I would get on a plane to visit SF just to go back to Ozumo and satisfy my Japanese craving. Thank you for an amazing night of delights! Miriam

What a wine list

By Glyndwr100 |

et an old friend and his wife and we went to Ozumo. I must admit I had not heard of this restaurant before, but it was right up there. Food excellent, wine even more so. Especially when I heard the price!! Definitely for special occasions.

sushi set great, other dishes not as good as other visits, after $400+ bill

By LJKP |

matsu sushi set, gyoza, shami, bucho, gimlet & bourbon drinks service and environment great; sushi set great, other dishes not as good as other visits, after $400+ bill

Excellent food and awesome staff

By Reilly3 |

We sat at the sushi bar for dinner last night and had a great time! Food was excellent and staff was attentive, pleasant and helpful. It was my sister's birthday and they brought us a very tasty ice-cream dessert. Decor is upscale, fresh and we had such a nice evening. We love sushi and are picky and this restaurant did not disappoint.

Dine to impress... job done

By MOMOSONG |

If you want to impress your business partners to get the deal done, Ozumo definitely can handle that. I just let my server know what was up, and they took care of the rest. Fresh fish, Japanese chefs, and a sake list of premiums that is sure to change your mind about sake. A must go place if it's business or leisure.

Excellent taste

By Scheherezade99 |

Good food, excellent wine selection. Be aware the prices are SF level (high) and the portions are artful (small). Next door to Harbor Court Hotel and Griffon Hotel. Close to Google offices.

Great sushi.

By Julie_Mendiola |

Lovely atmosphere. The sushi was flavorful and fresh. The San Francisco tap water is not the best tap I've tasted. Make sure you get a drink that comes bottled.

Pretentious and overpriced.

By Hernando C |

Not worth the price, better Japanese places in San Francisco. Food quality and service definitely not up to standards at th a level.

Even Better Than Before

By Marcos D |

This time, I gave it 5 stars because it’s even better that on my last visit, two years ago. Service is flawless, hard to find outside Japan, and the food is exquisite.

Lunch during restaurant week

By TexasKivs |

We had an amazing lunch during SF Restaurant week. The Karaage chicken was unique and delicious. Lunch also included a salad that was different from the norm. But the highlight is definitely the steak bento box and the sushi lunch. Steak cooked to absolute perfection and the sushi was perfectly fresh and delicious. Presentation and service also spot on despite busy lunch hour. I’m definitely going back!!!!!

Overpriced, Regular Service, Everyday Food.

By Feedbackmaster |

Buyer beware. If you do chose to go to this restaurant for dinner, make sure you have a large bank account if you want to leave full or a second restaurant to which you can go and have a second dinner. The price is absolutely overpriced for what you get. The quality of the fish is fresh, but similar to other lower priced sushi restaurants. Ambiance is average and the view is OK. I would not recommend this restaurant.

Fresh and inventive

By AmyK |

This restaurant is on the pricey side and portions are quite small, but every bite is packed with flavor and interest. Even the entrées are more of a tasting size. We ordered 10 different dishes to share among three people and had no trouble finishing it all. The menu has a wide variety and the fish was very fresh. They also have a large collection of high-quality sake. Don’t miss the black cod - it literally melts in your mouth.

Excellent service, great food!

By JetSetterRobb |

A friend came into the city to meet me for dinner. Ozumo is pretty close to my hotel. Another friend suggested that I ask for Andrew so, I did. I have to say, right off the bat, that the service at Ozumo is exceptional and definitely Five Star! Andrew and the wait staff made all of our food and drink selections for us and, I must say, it was all amazing! The food was presented well, very fresh and very flavorful! The spicy tuna tar tar is over the moon! Kudos on the wine selection as well! We were thoroughly impressed and will definitely be bacK. Thank you Andrew and Ozumo for taking the thought out of our meal selections so that we could have a meaningful conversation and a great visit. You rock!

Great upscale Japanese

By jgle4 |

This is a classy up market Japanese This was our last night in San Fran so we wanted somewhere good !! We sat at the sushi counter in the back restaurant area .. not to be confused with the front bar area .. which we find is always good fun watching chefs create and good way to converse about the food The service was excellent .. efficient encouraging and the food arrived in good time The sushi was great the sashimi excellent bit our favourite was the main course blackened cod The atmosphere is great It has the noisy vibe ! The restaurant is not cheap but it’s a good night out

Wonderful food and ambiance. Just one (minor) disappointment

By frtw |

My date and I learned that Ozumo's head sushi chef (a friend of a friend) was retiring so we committed to visiting one last time before he turned in his apron. We were certainly very pleased with our dining experience. We dined outdoors due to the COVID-19 restriction - which was fine since we got spectacular views of the Bay Bridge, the bay, and the Ferry Building! We started with Kyushu Karaage (fried chicken): best I've had in the US and the best my date ever had (we're both Japanese) followed by maguro (tuna) nigiri and Kaiso salad - goes well with a hot dish. Some tofu also complemented the dishes as well. We ordered two sushi rolls: the Ozumo (they're classic specialty of unagi (eel), cucumber and crab) and the Hamachi maki. Both were excellent. So why didn't we give Ozumo 5-stars? Hate to say it, but the desserts were a bit disappointing: their lava cake and ice cream were too sweet and not flavorful. In retrospect, we should have skipped the dessert and ordered another sushi roll; the classic California roll with spicy tuna would have been great. Still, a terrific dining experience overall - and certainly romantic!

New Years Eve

By Doug M |

Great meal on New Year’s Eve. Toro and albacore tuna sashimi were terrific, melt in your mouth. Skewers were great as was the tuna tartare.

Fine Japanese cuisine with views of the bay and Bay Bridge.

By JOHN A |

We have eaten here many times and it never disappoints. From the friendly helpful staff to the well prepared meal items, it is really not to be missed.

Terrible service; overpriced

By Freegirl18 |

First, we were not served our cocktails until after our food was served, a huge no-no in the restaurant industry. Mine was not served in the way I requested it. Then there was a long delay for service period, and to get our check. The sushi was fair and extremely expensive. A huge disappointment.

Great ambience, great food and great service.

By Augustine K |

Wish I remembered the name of the server. He was so helpful. As we were not too hungry, we were not sure what to order, but his step-by-step assistance really helped. We dined on a relatively quiet Sunday evening, and it was not too crowded. The atmosphere was perfect. The restaurant has a good collection of California wines and other types of drinks, which we enjoyed very much. A bit pricy but it’s worth it.

Excellent and creative food

By Michaelbr |

Excellent dinner with very fresh fish and creative cuisine. Nice selection of different styles. A little too noisy.

Good choice for single dining

By StraightArrow10 |

I sat at the bar for a single dinner. There was an interesting selection of Japanese beer, as well as many sake and whiskey selections. The Kaiso salad was interesting and flavorful. The Tempura Ebi was good as well. Service was attentive and excellent.

Melt in your Mouth Amazing! Best sushi - do not miss while in San Francisco

By KrisKnight |

Outstanding customer service! From the reservation, to our greeting, our waiter, and our conversation with Director and former fellow Texan, Mr. Mel Collins, we could not rate our experience any higher. The sushi was outstanding, buttery, fresh to die for good! Sake delicious - a beautiful experience, I can't wait to visit again! Thank you for making our night so special!

Fresh Sushi, great service...

By ygwhitty |

Celebrated my 40th bday with 5 of my closest friends and had such a great experience from the moment we entered the restaurant. The host was funny and so charming...brought me a bday glass of champagne right away. We were seated in a private area which made our dinner even more special...Food and ambiance were great!

Excellent Asian Fare

By JetSetterRobb |

Great trendy place for sushi on the Embarcadero. Ozumo has a great happy hour with an excellent selection of Saki. Sushi was fresh and flavorful. Be sure to make a reservation if you have more than 2 in your party. This is a very busy evening eatery.

Fantastic Japanese restaurant

By Milind P |

Located right on the Embarcadeo. Great food, simple but tasteful ambience, very good service. Had miso soup, sushi and sashimi and of course variety of sake!!

Not worth the price

By gpr337 |

Like the restaurant vibe and decor. The food is good but not great given how expensive it is. Not good value for the money.

Amazing Sushi

By David H |

Great atmosphere, sushi, sake and Japanese craft beer selection. You can also get a really good view of the Golden Gate Bridge from the restaurant.

Oh Zumo! Lol

By KhamiMiles |

A little stush for my taste but it was fun to 'fine dine' with my mom for her birthday. the food was well prepared and beautifully decorated. a delightful experience.

Not worth it

By Billy2 |

We didn’t get to try the food. We had a reservation on a Sunday night at 7 pm. We got there at 7:02. Their grace period was 15 min. There was no one at the door. It took five minutes for someone to come. They said they were going to ck on our table. The lady came back and said they didn’t have a table for us. We complaint but no solution was offered. They sat us at a long shared table. We waited like 10 minutes for someone to take our order. We got tired and left. Apparently having a reservation for a. Table doesn’t mean anything for Ozumo.

Good Japanese Izakaya style dishes, premium prices

By Douglas A |

We went for dinner on a Friday and a reservation was needed. We were led past a lively bar with thumping music and into a thankfully quieter restaurant area with an open Teppinyaki style bar. We had a regular table with a great view of the Bay Bridge, so that was a bonus. The service was attentive and they were happy to make recommendations. We had the chili-garlic Edamame, which was a nice twist on the classic appetizer. We had the veggie tempura, which was freshly cooked, very good and generous, with an interesting fan-like creation which seemed designed to capture the tempura batter - that was the food highlight. The pork jowl was different and very tough, but tasty with the lettuce and cucumber provided. We finished off with a breaded shrimp Sushi roll, which was tasty but nothing to write home about. The cocktail specials with Roku Gin were also very good value at $8. The Saki tasting flights were, however, not good value, at $26 for a flight of three small saki cups. It was decent Saki, but not that decent. So all up, there was nothing really wrong with the food, but nothing very special. The service was great, the location great, but it felt like we were paying a stiff premium for that location, especially for the Sake.

Low scale and way too expensive for what it is Japanese restaurant presented as high scale.

By Stefaneya S |

I am a big fan of Japanese cuisine. I had been recommended this place by hotel concierge as a high end and trendy place - what a disappointment! No ambience at all, the furniture was very tired and the lighting was way too bright in the evening. And moving onto the food, we had a few starters and wagyu beef as a main to share. The starters weren’t great and the Gyoza in particular was absolutely dreadful. I could buy this from any Asian supermarket and it would be way supérieur. And regarding the main course, I never had a bad Wagyu in my life until the one I had in Ozuma. This is not a high end restaurant from a food or ambience perspective. In fact, the only thing high end about Ozuma is the price.

Disappointing

By MC6363 |

We have been recommended this place by friends and were told it is was a nice Japanese restaurant with a trendy/nice place. Actually this place has nothing special. Sushis and sashimi’s are ok but service is really not good. The hostess was continuously on the phone when we arrived and we had to show her our impatience to be able to sit after a 5 minutes wait, basically for nothing as we had booked our table. Our table was closed to the wall so basically hard to eat with sticks when your elbow touches the wood each time. The server suggested that we choose a specific sake, naturally as it was the most expensive on the wine list. The food was ok but not particularly special or surprising or tasty at all. For lore than 130 usd by person, the whole experience is not worth ont it. We experienced the following day an other Japanese restaurant called AKIKO’s and the experience was totally different : delicious, surprising, caring service for a sensitive same budget. So you should certainly think twice before choosing Izumi as the city is full with better Japanese.

Just OK, was expecting more

By Tania d |

This is a lovely setting near the waterfront and service was good. There is a very wide selection of sake. The sushi and sashimi were fresh but the dishes overall sounded better than they tasted and lacked flavour. There just wasn't the wow factor we were expecting based on recommendations. And it's pretty pricey.

Solid Japanese Restaurant

By ooshazam |

Dined with my wife and parents while on holiday. We had recently eaten at Nobu in Malibu and Matsuhisa in Beverly Hills the week before so the benchmark was very high. Ozumo was a nice surprise. Great decor and service. Solid sushi. Spicy Tuna Rolls - highlight Hanabi Rolls - highlight Jidori - OK Gyu - OK Tuna sushi - good Enjoyed it so much we ordered spicy tuna rolls the next day delivered to our hotel through UberEats however it wasn't very good so I would only recommend eating at the restaurant.

Simply amazing

By L. K. |

Perfect in every way, the sushi was excellent, and the server was great, too. Loved the ambiance. We sat at the sushi bar; the itamae were all amazing. This place is the real deal. It doesn't get any better.

Superb Sushi, but Skip the Dessert

By frtw |

My date and I went here on the Fourth of July. Both of us are of Japanese descent and raised on its cuisine so we're both very selective about the freshness and quality. At Ozumo, it was outdoor dining at its best: great views of the Bay Bridge and watching fireworks near the Ferry Building and in the distance in Oakland. The former were hard to see since the fog was rolling in. Their sushi is among the very best in the Bay Area. Recommendations: TONAI SAN SUSHI (bite size modern sushi, including lobster, shrimp, wagyu, and uni), TORO (bluefin tuna belly - we ordered it twice), NASU (grilled eggplant). Their special that day was a SAKE SASHIMI. The only disappointment was the dessert: we previously tried CHOCO-CHAN (chocolate cake with Japanese whisky & banana ice-cream) and this time SURUI (sorbet); they were so-so. Better to have a nightcap (soothing chamomile tea or sake) and relax. Overall, a great dining experience: my date say this is her favorite restaurant in San Francisco - and she's a native of the City.

Overrated

By Alanrsegal |

By design I chose Harbor Court Hotel, thinking that Ozumo belonged to it. From the start, it was a disaster. On a Sunday night, they stop accepting orders at 9PM. I overheard the bartender wanting to close out so that he could go clubbing. So I felt rushed to leave by the time I sat barside. I informed how famished I was and he encouraged me to order the $95 prix-fixe. Only 12 mini bites arrived. And soon figured out that I could have ordered something more affordable with a larger portion. I ordered more but did not trust the bartender's advice. Finally hotel guests cannot charge their meal to their room. Next time, I will for sure avoid Ozumo. Waste of time and money because I left hungry and feeling rotten about my ill-fated choice.

Always fantastic with high quality sushi

By Dennis M |

Ozumo is a great SF treat. Fantastic sushi along with a unparalleled Sake selection. I have been coming here for years and the consistency has remained the same. One of the top 3 sushi dishes I have ever had is the Hanabi. If you order one dish or if you do not like sushi but want to try something amazing - HAN A BI!

Not worth its while

By Emily Gramos G |

Extremely overpriced and at the same time extremely average. It was not worth its value and you can definitely find way better Japanese/Sushi wherever (and cheaper, too).

Best ever wild salmon

By Gregoire P |

Thanks to Good recommandations we found this great place and enjoyed it as much as possible. Wild salmon nigiri were our highlight of the dinner ! Don’t missed it !

Excellent sushi!

By TeamRealMcCoy |

Visiting from out of state, we dined here with friends who’d eaten here before and knew just how incredible it was. They recommended dishes based on input from us, and we were so impressed with the freshness, variety, presentation and taste of the dishes we enjoyed. The staff was excellent and service was timely, ensuring we never had too much or too little food on the table at any one time. This is clean beautiful food. If you love sushi, you’ll find your nirvana here!

It's OK even if you are just coming from Japan

By Myraubatyr |

We had a lunch there, service was good as well as the food, Bento box was as good as it can get. I do not remember the names of the dishes but coming just from Japan and being not that much of a sea lover I enjoyed it. Good job

Great for Sushi Lovers

By misanthropicdreamer |

My husband and daughter love sushi so once in a while I go along with them and try the few non sushi items on the menu. The other night we went to Ozumo for dinner and I had a surprisingly nice time. They enjoyed all sorts of attractive looking sushi. My son and I ordered the cooked cod and vegetarian sushi. The cod was delicious and the vegetarian sushi very nice. I appreciated that they had gluten free soy sauce and were careful of our food allergies (did not cook my son's food near shellfish). The atmosphere is nice with a variety of seating areas. I liked that we were given a table in the back by the windows facing the Bay Bridge. Very enjoyable. The service was top notch. The only negative had nothing at all to do with the restaurant. There is some kind of sewage treatment thing in the area and once in a while on weekends (when I am there for the farmer's market) and the night we came to Ozumo, there is a malodorous cloud of sewage smell outside. It did not enter the restaurant.

Good - but the last finish is lacking

By Eitchar |

The Japanese gentlemen behind the counter looks experienced and is doing a great job! Like Our waiter. But is is little bit of the restaurant acting as a machine - all is done in Excellent way - but where is the spirit and emotions? Excellent food, decent wine (no ice bucket delivered to us after request) and exciting venue.

Drinks

By emotionalbutterfly |

We had drinks here as we were staying in the hotel. It was cute with great service and an extensive list of drink options.

Sushi at its best!

By Mimiatsfo |

Fresh and delicious Sushi options with great Sake wine pairings! Large and hip spot to hang out after work too! Always spot on great service !

Friday March 2 Visit

By Pedro R |

Had not returned in over a decade (they have been running for 17 years now) Top quality sushi and toro, great sake flight sampler and the black cod hot dish still one of its standouts. Can't beat the Bay Bridge view either. Fantastic Night.

A must try

By Ricky V |

Modern Japanese cuisine. Had vegetable tempura which was excellent and tasty medium rare tenderloin steak that was so well cut, presented and perfectly cook. The meat was tender and sweet. We sat by the window and enjoyed the view of the ocean and the walk. Japanese cuisine which dares to be modern ( tenderloin steak) and yet stay traditional ( vegetable tempura). A must try even when the service was at best average.

Excellent

By stevens397 |

Asked our hotel for a good sushi place and we were sent here. This is WAY more than that. Truly an extraordinary experience for us, well facilitated by our waiter Te. Very different (for us) dishes, all perfectly described by the waiter who helped us order just the right amount. We did order one roll and my advice is to skip them and go to the things they specialize in. It was a delightful surprise.

OMG - probably the best Japanese food ever... though expensive and a bit "confused"

By arbrnrngr |

Went there on 9 Jan 18 during the JP Morgan conference. Had to wait 20 minutes for our reservation. There were a few people complaining about the bar being closed for a reserved party but, from our perspective, it was worth the wait. We eat at a lot of japanese restaurants when we travel HOWEVER the fish was superb. I love tuna and eel especially and we ordered some hand rolls and platters that arrived quickly and were delicious. Other than complaining customers, we loved the somewhat expensive food and cannot imagine a better restaurant.

Good food. Nothing great. Too loud

By stentdoc |

The food was good but not the best sushi I have had. The restaurant is too loud for my taste. The staff were very helpful. The view of the bay bridge was terrific

Dont try this terrible so called Japanese

By Marjan |

They try to sell this as high quality Japanese but I think is as low as it can get with high prices. Do not try it. Wagu steak was just bad cut with OTT fat no taste. Cheap cut. Sushi specially salmon low quality.. truly a bad experience I never want anyone to e experience....think twice before u decide to go to this restaurant . Waiter not helpful

Always Great!

By Mike K |

Great, consistent, trendy vibe along the Embarcadero and an easy walk from Market St. Great bar area as well as dining. Sushi dishes are outstanding as are the drinks!

Excellent food.............great ambience.

By gilest2018 |

The food was great, the service excellent. A great evening. How refreshing to get a bill in the US without the mandatory 18-22% service charge!!! Blackened cod was awesome, the sashimi was very tasty.

Slightly disappointing

By Mayleen3 |

Do not get me wrong, the food is good but for this price, I would have expected more such as faster service, right temperature for white wine and sake (though they offered a different cooler white wine free of charge). Small details but with the amount of other nice Japanese restaurants in the area, I wouldn't go back there.

Quick Lunch

By Pura Vida Seth |

Stopped in for lunch on the recommendation from the desk clerk at my hotel. I ordered the "Doyho" appetizer which is bigeye tuna tartare with edamame, cucumber, avocado, black tobiko, ponzu and wasabi oil, served with gyoza chips. I enjoyed that immensely as well as some miso soup. For a main course I enjoyed the "Hamachi" maki roll which was also world class. The restaurant's location was great and the view of the water from the back of the joint was outstanding. Alex, my server, also did an excellent job. While this is definitely on the fancy / expensive side, I would absolutely eat here again. FYI - the free guest wifi wasn't working properly on my visit which is certainly not a big deal but was mildly annoying since I was dining alone and wanted to catch up on a few things. If this helped you make a choice to eat here, please remember to hit the helpful button link.

Delightful experience

By Koby B |

It was my first time at this place, but my wife has visited there like 2 times before and it is very worthwhile to go back! It is an expensive restUrant but it very s worth every Penney. We took the Saki sampler and it was very enlightening. They have a dish of a mixed Sashimi and Avocado, which was wonderful. Also you cannot go wrong with vegetable Tampura. For entrees we chose a beef dish and a fish dish. They were tasteful but small, even tiny portions. We added a roll and seems that rolls are really the forte of the house! Their tea was great too. We did not have any desert as we were earlier that evening at Ghirardelli, so we had enough sweet substance for that night! The service was great!!!! Fast, efficient and attentive. Highly recommended!

Top notch sushi lunch

By StevenAllen |

Looking for sushi at lunchtime on a Monday. Not so easy even in San Francisco. But we eventually found Ozumo and had a delightful experience. Had three servings of Nigiri and two rolls. Just enough. Every bite was exquisite.

Excellent Sushi!

By Jim N |

Had an amazing experience here with the family. All sashimi and sushi rolls were delicious! Very cool decor and the service was excellent!

Really?!? Not good bad service high price

By Gilda M |

We booked for 4, we waited, then we entered a room full of smoke and smells... the location thou was nice so we decided to give it a try. The tip is 20% fixed and after a short while we understood why! Otherwise they won't get any! At any question the rude waiter continued looking up in annoyance! We ordered... many dishes! The one with salmon and tuna were very good, the tempura total average, the special dishes with no flavor and we sent back a tempura roll that was unmistakably old!!! We paid 400$ for 8 dishes and a bottle of wine (the waiter was annoyed also by our questions on a 70$ bottle!). To resume: nice location, very bad service, average food, crazy final bill for what we had! Go eat a crab instead!

Amazing Experience!!!!

By TravelFamily11 |

Food was top notch, drinks are plentiful, and service is over the top amazing. Quality of food for the price is one of the best options in the area of town.

The Best Restaurant in SF

By MattWMc |

Ozumo is the BEST restaurant in San Francisco. The attention to detail on all dishes and offerings creates an amazing culinary tour of Japan while being immersed in the historic Embarcadero of SF. Come for Happy Hour to enjoy some great bites and drinks at slightly more affordable costs, and then stay for dinner to enjoy the best steak and sushi the Bay Area has to offer.

Great Sushi in San Fransisco

By Farid H |

We did not have a reservation so they placed us at the Sushi Bar. The place is pricy but the chefs are artists. The quality of food is great, Each plate is a work of art as it is presented on a special rectangular slab of stone and looks like something you want to put on the wall.

Good food but very over priced

By Greg R |

It's a good sushi Restaurant but overpriced. We let the waiter select courses for our dinner, he selected $400 item of a few ounces of beef without asking us. The dinner overall was $300 per person for good not great Japanese food. The restaurant is an attractive space and well located just not equal to the price.

Fantastic food

By SB |

We had a great meal here! Everything tasted so good and although the menu was a bit confusing, the waiter helped with suggestions. The raspberry cake dessert is a must! It was delicious.

Super Fresh Sushi

By Mombeto |

We decided sort of last minute to come here for dinner. We ended up sitting in the bar area instead waiting for a table. It was a lot more fun. Our service started out excellent. It was never bad, but we lost her for awhile. The food was fresh and different. The calamari had a wonderful sauce. The Soy sauce was homemade I believe. Don't quote me on that. But it was nice. Cocktails were VERY good. Too good in fact. We enjoyed the restaurant.

Average quality, well above average price

By wilson17 |

We had a mix of sushi and cooked dishes. Everything was good but not great quality, with a high price tag. Some sushi pieces were on the thin side, but nothing really stood out as excellent or poor. A couple cooked dishes lacked the rich flavors of better Japanese restaurants. The service was good, drinks also pricey. I wouldn't return.

Stayed at Harbor Court and decided to have a quick drink.....

By chriswhitman1973 |

What a great space, the restaurant is clean and has a great look and feel. The staff is amazing, and An-Gloria is a shining star!

Not a Good Experience

By Frank Sories |

I had been to Ozumo a couple of times years ago. It was always expensive, but the food was very good and the ambience very pleasant. Since I had an appointment across the street, I thought I might try their happy hour. Things started off well; my spouse and I ordered drinks and a tuna tartare appetizer. My Giddy Geisha cocktail was truly delicious, if small. The tuna serving was decent-sized, and the taste was delicious. It had some tobiko and a spicy dressing. There was a spoon provided for placing the tuna on taro chips, of which there were very few. We'd originally intended to order a few items as we chatted and relaxed. The server, Dean, was simply terrible. When we asked for a few more taro chips (chips, not caviar)so we didn't end up eating the rest of the tuna WITH A SPOON we were told there would be an unspecified additional charge. I thought that was ridiculous so it was "No, thank you." We ordered prawn tempura, which was also very good - crispy and fresh-tasting. We had a couple of questions, one of which was whether we could have the chef omit the shiso leaf (which I loathe) from the pickled plum maki (which I love). He gave me a very quick "NO," and I had to insist before he went to ask the chefs. He came back and said there were no changes WHATSOEVER to happy hour menu items. Keep in mind that I wasn't asking for something EXTRA. All they had to do was not grab a leaf and stick it in the roll. It's that simple. I would assume that in a place like this rolls were not remade and fetched from a fridge in a back room. At least. I hope not. So what was the big deal? I wasn't really interested in "deconstructing" the roll myself to rid myself of the offending leaf. His attitude was brusque, but he certainly kept trying to push additional drinks. We decided to pull the plug, so we asked for the check. After about ten minutes, he asked again about more drinks. We told him we had already asked him for out check. When it finally arrived, he just left it on the table and left. We had no intention of dawdling in producing the credit card; we wanted to say sayonara and make our exit. We had to go to the front desk to pay. The hostess didn't offer even a perfunctory "sorry" although she aware of the whole sorry affair. Dean ignored us as we left, which was exactly what we would expect. There seemed to be a particularly virulent pandemic running unchecked here - a pandemic of pretentiousness and disservice. Take a good look at the reviews here, and you'll find many stories amazingly similar to mine. You might want to pay attention. We won't be back.

Always enjoyable sushi spot

By Travelingbear1000 |

Ozumo is great. Fun cocktails. Great sushi. Enjoyable bar scene. Not the cheapest spot but always a nice time.

Ramen for Lunch

By Hardrocker8888 |

My cousin and I crossed the Bay to try this place for the first time. We were pleasantly greeted when we arrived. Precautions were taken at the door. The service was friendly. We loved our ramen. I finished it all.

Inattentive service didn't match the food and ambience

By David Crowe |

I went here for a special evening. Being highly rated for Japanese food I expected high prices, small portions, great presentation, high quality food, and cool ambience and ... good service. We got all but the last and it ruined the evening. We ordered a sashimi combination ($60 for 8 pieces satisfies the small portion/high price criteria, but also the great presentation/high quality). Before it had arrived we decided on the main course, two cooked fish dishes (also small portions, high prices, great presentation, high quality). We inquired about the sashimi and was told that the sushi chefs were busy, but not to worry. And then the cooked dishes arrived. The server seemed more worried about losing the sashimi order than anything else, and selling me another drink. "Not to worry", she said. I assume that meant that the sashimi wouldn't arrive on top of our cooked dishes. But my partner had not finished eating hers before the sashimi finally arrived. There was no apology, no sign of concern by the two servers who visited our table. And, very unusually for me, no tip. I'm personally not too motivated by free stuff, but a sincere apology and an offer of say, a free dessert, wouldn't be asking too much. But, nothing.

Excellent dining experience right near the Ferry Building

Delicious! High end Japanese fare in a well located beautiful space. We ate at the sushi bar and it was great fun. Everyone from the hostess to the servers and sushi chefs were all professional, friendly and attentive. Excellent food, extensive sake menu, excellent service.

Pretentious? Yes. Obnoxious? Absolutely

By CRM519 |

We stopped here for dinner because we were looking for some good sushi. I honestly felt like I was in an episode of Seinfeld where we were being completely shunned by the Soup Guy (Actually a really funny episode look it up!). Anyhoo I wanted to try the special but asked if they could withhold the jalapeño. The server looked legitimately scared of the kitchen staff and said 'the chef doesn't take requests but I'll ask". His answer? "if you don't like jalapeños eat something else". Amazing service by a pompous and arrogant probably smelly doesn't get too many happy moments chef. Thing is almost everything that night had jalapeños so we tried to make the best of it with some other stuff that's not even worthwhile mentioning. The sake was meh and $250 dollars later, we left hungry to our hotel bar and had some flatbread (and vino of course)

Nice but no so...

By JavaGtown |

The ambiance of this place is to die for. Very nicely done bar area and wonderful booths. The only problem is the sushi is not as spectacular as the prices. I mean who changes $8 for a cucumber roll?? Typical SF overly expensive prices for not over the top food. And they add 6% for the bs health mandate. Talk about leaving with a bad taste in your mouth.

Good downtown sushi

By Howard K |

Bar is very lively. In the financial district of SF there is not much Sushi. This is a bit pricey but one of the best places.

very good contemporary Japanese cuisne presented in a very appealing atmosphere

By Kenneth K |

Had a great meal. Very attractive room with contemporary Asian décor. Professional service and good suggestions for who are not that knowledgeable about Japanese cuisine.

AMAZING

By Rob B |

Amazing! Hosted a private dinner for our company here in the Sake room. Everything was fantastic! Food was great and service exceptional. Special thanks to: Michelle Cheng (Director of Events) Danny Sprague (Director of Sake) Dominica DiMaggio (Executive Chef) Vanessa Webster (FOH Manager) Huge special thanks to Michelle who got the deal done with us over a weekend. We deeply, deeply appreciated this. We plan to do lots more events with you!

Great Japanese

By Tor_Malmros |

This is a great Japanese restaurant close to the Bay Bridge and next door to Harbor Court Hotel and Griffin Hotel. Very fresh produce and great service.

Friendly Upscale Meal

By Bruce C |

The quality of the sushi was excellent. The service was accommodating. A colleague and I arrived at 5 pm (having flown in from the East coast, so our clocks were at 8 pm - the dinner menu was not available for another half an hour. Nevertheless, the waiter took our order and said he would do his best, and our food was prepared and a very reasonable timeframe. The Ozumo roll and spicy scallops were uniquely prepared. I was happy with the meal.

Shocking

By Siyami |

It began at front desk lady asked us that why are we 5 minutes early!! Then asked half an hour more we said no and she found a table at the back. Anyhow food and taste was average but service was real shock, everything arrived with a fault, un timed, un expected and most of them mixed with other tables. Be carefull about the check also we as 3 table side by side saw that they add a lot of things which are not delivered so all cheques turn back to the cashier and calculated again and it is upmost expensive so never again.

Not What I Expected

By Jean S |

Although the food was good and the ambiance very cool, I went away hungry. I think this place is more for folks who want to drink sake and nibble on small dishes.

Amazing

By astridk85 |

We enyojed dinner at this wonderful place. They have a big menue, yet the waitress was very helpful and helped us select the perfect food. The way the food was presented was amazing and it was delicious. We didn't eat sushi and that was good. Their wine, saki and dessert was also great. Additionally, they offer a car service which took us to our hotel. This was a huge surprise and we were delighted. What an experience!

Wonderful server and great food

By Alex |

We had a great server in Nastaassa, and the food and sake was wonderful. A bit expensive, but happy hour helps with some great food options. Highly recommend.

Good service and tasty food

By BERWOLF |

WE had a lovely meal at OZUMO; the service was fast and very friendly, the dishes were very tasty: hand rolls and the blackened cod were great. The octopus and calamari dish was OK. The ambience and Sake selection is very good

Perfect!!

By Wallacescottb |

We spent a long day driving round trip from San Francisco to Carmel and when we got back we were starving so we headed to Ozumo. Reservation were made with Open Table and everything was ready for us when we arrived. We had several small plates so we could share and all our foods were incredible. Do not miss this restaurant. It’s not cheap but it is worth every penny.

Warm and friendly staff, great menu

By Jim K |

This is a special place (for me) while in San Francisco. One block off the bay and simply Delicious! The staff are most helpful in selection.

Great food, great location

By Ben C |

This is one of my regular spots when I visit San Francisco. It is a very good sushi restaurant, close to the ferry building and embarcadero. The place is generally buzzing with good energy, (sometimes noisy) and the service is good (though slow at times)

Excellent service and sushi!!

By GonePlaid |

🍣 was amazing, but this place is extremely expensive!! I enjoyed the service and specialty treatment by my server Matt!! Well done and thank you for the special dinner. Also the saki is an amazing treat! 😄

Excellent service, amazing food

By Randal L |

This could easily be the best restaurant I have ever eaten in. Everything was delicious from the sushi to the wagyu beef to the chocolate brownie made with wagyu beef fat. Put this at the top of your list of restaurants to try in San Francisco!

Constantly delicious

By CharAugustine |

We have been there several times now and it is always consistently delicious. From The edamame appetizer to the amazing hamachi and the filet...all so good! We had several different rolls and ,of course, the yummy miso.previously we had their cod... how many ways can I say “delicious”?!

Mediocre at best

By Cmath1304 |

I had high expectations for our meal, considering the price point, location, and decor. The sushi was mediocre. The steak tartare was not good and overwhelmed with sauce. The California roll was bizarre and I think the crab was mixed with mayonnaise. It was a $300 meal that did not taste like a $300 meal.

Good food but too expensive

By mattpX6956SG |

The restaurenr is very good, the food even excellent and the service as well. The only thing to mention as negative: it‘s far too expensive of what is provided versus what the check shows at the end...

Friendly service, very good food but expensive.

By Thuy N |

The atmosphere were great when we celebrated Father's day here last night. The rolls at Ozumo were at good average price. Their Nigiri/sashimi selections were great but the price almost double compare to other restaurants. We liked the appetizer they offered. We had scallop and mushroom, which were delicious. We also shared the Matsu which I thought was great but at least one of the fish was not as fresh as it should be for sushi but it still tasted very good. Thanks to our server, Dale who is very friendly. Thank you for a great evening.

A superb New Year's Eve with a view

By cvikati |

We went there for a late dinner on New Year's Eve. The restaurant is perfectly situated along the Embarcadero to either watch the fireworks from the big bay windows by the tables inside, or to enjoy a leisurely dinner and then join the crowds outside for the show. When we arrived for our booking at 9.45pm, the place was already full and they informed us we would need to wait one hour to be seated. We weren't too pleased about it, and the restaurant staff handled the situation perfectly. The hostess brought us to wait at the sushi bar, and kept returning with updates. I also asked to speak with the manager, who was on the case immediately and went scouring the restaurant to see what he could do. He also returned to us a couple of times in-between searches with updates. In the end, we got a great table after about a 20min wait. But what really struck me was the way the staff interacted with us and the way they managed the situation. The food was superb - we ordered sushi for my husband, and some of their tempura dishes for me since I am pregnant. The sushi was well-presented and very fresh. The atmosphere in the restaurant was buzzing, and the waiters were attentive and friendly despite being incredibly busy. We finished up around 11.45pm and strolled outside to watch the fireworks. It was the perfect place to round off 2018!

Deep Pockets required

By kathy-mgt |

It must've been the Sake...Seven for dinner and our bill was $700! Two of us shared Shabu for $48 plus five of us shared one bottle of Sake. Portions of all selections, except ours, were extremely small. We ordered tempura after everyone was finished with dinner and some were headed to a fast-food place. Wait staff was knowledgeable and friendly.

Outstanding

By Matthias F |

A big restaurant ... but with really nice interior work and if you get a table at the back end you end up with great views as there are huge windows. Service is outstanding, the food terrific- dont miss the shabu-shabu!

Birthday dinner

By Will_Travel |

OMG. The food was beyond amazing. We made a reservation through OpenTable- we got seated quickly. The tables have a rustic feel and the restaurant as a whole was lovely. We started with craft Japanese beer and vegetable skewers. Then we had the most amazing sushi rolls. The lobster roll was so good we ordered a second. The service was excellent. It was a lovely evening.

Top of the line sushi and Japanese fusion

By Terry A |

For those special occasions, you can't beat the elegance and amazing selection of delicious sushi, sashimi and hot dishes. Their sake selection and full bar service is incomparable. Quite a vigorous bar scene in addition to the gorgeous dining areas. Extraordinary service and skilled sushi chefs. You can't go wrong, it's pricey but you get what you pay for ...

Excellent food and authentically kind service.

By Marcos D |

Top quality food. Our waitress, from Nara, was the embodiment of traditional japanese kindness. Good location and view.

Great Restaurant

By JimGarl458 |

We enjoyed a quick bite in the bar/ lounge area one night and the setting was cool. Great sushi all around.

A must have in SF

By Oliver B |

Yes, yes, yes - it was a good choice making a reservation, although the reservation process was annoying - too many questions in advance, a hell of work and communication with the restaurant. Why do I have to choose the drinks in advance.... The restaurant and food itself were more than perfect. We really enjoyed the evening and the way the food was prepared.

Melts in your mouth

By Bri |

You can taste the freshness of this sushi. The garlic edamame was so tasty and the salmon and hamachi melt in your mouth. We celebrated our five month anniversary here and the sake was delicious! Our lovely waitress consistently came over to pour our sake which helped us finish the bottle. I will be back.

Best of 7

By Joe O |

We spent 7 nights in San Francisco and this was by far the best restaurant we went to for food, drinks, service, ambience and seating. Starting with drinks the Basil Marben cocktail was outstanding, so good I stayed with it and never went to wine. All courses were outstandingly presented, as one would expect and the tastes were exceptional, we had the Miso Soups, both choices, Seaweed Salad, Ebi Tempura and California roll. For desert we shared the choco' cake which was AMAZING. One night of our trip left, we are considering going again!

Good service and very good Japanese food

By Pioneer550158 |

We came in early so the place was not too packed. The service was quick but not pushing. They explained how the concept worked and the size of the portions which is a good thing because most of the time you just order to much in the united states. But the portions at this restaurant are manageable and of a good size. We started with some tempura of black shrimp and three small portions of vegetables. The taste and the presentation was nice. Than we had some rolls and sushi. The sushi was perfect not too much rice and the tuna and salmon not too cold. We finished with the tenderloin nicely sliced with some vegetables on top and dripped in some light sauce. Very tender meat and the taste was really good. The bill was as expected, it's definitely not a cheap place but its inline with other high end Japanese restaurants. Although very tired from our flight we had a good diner at ozumo and we will definitely come back.

Great sushi and views of the water

By whereaminow14 |

Lively bar up front, big windows overlooking the water in the back. Place was crowded on a Tuesday night and the food is clearly the draw. Sushi was fresh and the appetizers were creative. Good overall experience in SF while traveling on business.

Great sushi

By Oddne R |

Had a great evening here with perfect sushi. Asked the chef to give us his best of the day and trust me i was. Can be loud in the bar area, but get a table in the back and your good ;)

Too Fast, Made Me Furious

By Traveling_Pundit |

Brought a UK-based client here for dinner on a Saturday evening. We were the first ones in the restaurant and had to wait for a few minutes to be seated. Once we were seated we were hurried through our dinner in less than seventy minutes. That's ordering wine, two rounds of appetizers, and entrees. Seventy minutes (checked the time stamp on my receipt). The waiter was oblivious to my signaling (including verbal); our entrees arrived at the same time as a round of sushi. When we left at 6:43 the dining room was still half empty. Food was, as usual, very good; that's why i've awarded two stars instead of a single star. There's really no excuse for this performance. My client felt very rushed, as did we. SF is blessed with a plethora of expense-account-worthy restaurants and I'll dine elsewhere from now on. Boulevard, for example, is on the same block.

Phenomenal Sushi With A View

By sdgirl2011 |

This place is awesome for sushi! The nigiri sushi is out of this world. Tried the salmon, Spanish mackerel, octopus, sweet shrimp, and steamed shrimp. The miso cod melts in your mouth and just the right portion. My family members had a salmon roll, skewers with peppers, and another baked salmon dish. Food tasted very fresh and perfectly cooked. Servers are very friendly and helpful. One of our dishes arrived late but the deliciousness more than offset the delay. Desserts were awesome too. We had the bread pudding & coffee ice cream. We asked the reception for a window view and they accommodated. The view of the Bay Bridge lighted at night with changing designs just makes your dinning even more special.

Very nice!

By Francy_dg |

Very nice restaurant with a good atmosphere, we went there with two kids and no issue. We loved the food, miso soup, sushi, maki, tempura and gyoza were great. We enjoyed also the mochi (desserts).

The rice pudim is the best!

By Ell Mattador G |

Good restaurant, nice fish, beautiful place, but it didn't surprise. The highlight is the rice pudim, the best I've eaten in my whole life!!

Amazing

By Melchior O |

All the way great and amazing. Very trendy chic place with great service and decor. Book if you can or they can sit you at the bar. Food was outstanding

I love this place

By Sara G. |

Ozumo in San Francisco has been my favorite sushi spot in the country since my first visit in 2012. The restaurant has a fantastic atmosphere that instantly makes you feel welcomed and relaxed. The staff is happy and friendly! The nigiri here is incredibly fresh and of the highest quality—each bite is a reminder of why this spot is my favorite. The rolls are unique yet maintain a simplicity that highlights the flavors without drowning them in sauce. The focus is definitely on the quality of the ingredients. If you’re looking for sushi that’s both exquisite and true to its essence, Ozumo is the place to go.

Unfortunately infested with mice

By Jessica H |

The food was great, but unfortunately we REPEATEDLY saw a small mouse darting across the floor, sometimes coming uncomfortably close to our table - and feet. The scariest part being that if the mouse/mice were being so bold it is likely they in fact there are many many more. Hopefully they get pest control in there ASAP and get rid of the infestation

Total Fail

By loveandpeace47 |

The tables are full, people are happy so who can complain with the business model? So sad. When this place first opened about a dozen years ago, it was the best in the Bay Area. It took that title from Sushi Ran in Sausalito. Now, as the rest of the Bay Area has caught up and surpassed, (for example with Yoshi at Sushi Ran bringing in a great innovative chef and expanding the menu,) this place has crashed to the lowest common denominator. One major clue is Spicy Tuna on the menu. Spicy Tuna is only served because it is not fresh and often comes from India or other places that handle bulk low grade Tuna for the mass market with the spiciness hiding the lack of freshness. You will not find it on any respectable top class Japanese restaurant menu these days. The Hamachi Sashimi with avocado was once a unique signature dish here, with the creamy avocado beautifully complementing the fish. Now the same dish is covered in a vinegary, spicey hot broth, destroying the flavor and the texture in one swoop. The black cod was excellent, however, the side of Shiso Peppers that it came with was a complete mismatch, with the odor of the peppers overpowering the delicate cod. It was awful. The scallops were OK but came with half cooked Brussel Sprouts for goodness sakes! What a mismatch of flavor and texture with no sense of balance. What are they thinking? Have to blame the chef for a complete lack of integrity and taste in preparing these dishes but I guess spicy Mexican sells better than subtle fragrance. These past months I have reviewed four excellent Japanese restaurants in S.F. with a level of sophistication that is fresh, innovative and delicious. How this place stays busy and successful only proves there is no accounting for taste and people with money to burn. It is in a great location a few blocks from the Bay and the Sake list is world-class. Very very expensive but the sake at least is somewhat justifiable. Perhaps people are just getting drunk and needing the hot flavors to taste the food, like on an airplane, or maybe they just have never experienced anything better, but whatever the case, I am in the minority and everyone is paying through the nose for ersatz food. So many better choices in town now, that are also either less expensive or the same cost. I don't mind paying for a great dining experience, but I don't like paying for something that literally made me sick soon after eating. BTW: Excellent friendly, helpful service and hip interior to go along with great Sake.

Fabulous Japanese

By Kawana Travellers |

We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Ozumo. I can recommend the hamachi sashimi with ginger-jalapeño ponzu. The grilled miso marinated black cod was outstanding. Amazing selection of sake, we loved the Ozumo house sake.

Great Bay Bridge View

By Jesse D |

Excellent Japanese restaurant with a great view of the light show on the Bay Bridge at night. Very chic contemporary interior. Good service.

Beautiful restaurant all around!

By DarlingStarling27 |

The staff were on point and flowed perfectly from the moment we walked in. Loved our waiter, so knowledgable with great recommendations. The food was stunning, you almost want to take pictures of everything to remember how beautiful your meal was. The cocktails were works for art, even the ice cubes (the ice cubes!) left me awe. Memorable meal, I will hands down eat here again.

Worth the Price

By Sal_Paradise767 |

I had an excellent meal here. They have an impressive sake and liquor selection, naturally, plus a really interesting menu with sushi and a number of other dishes. I recommend the cod and the chicken thighs. It's definitely pricey but the space and the service as well as the food quality make it worth it.

Top Japanese!

By LaurentBelgium |

Probably the best Japanese restaurant in town and surrounding area. Very friendly service and the quality and freshness of the dishes is remarkable. Lots of great choices on the menu, be it for fish or meats.

Very tasty food

By mi v |

I was looking at restaurants on envibe app and saw Ozumo. I went on a date at this restaurant and it was perfect. Excellent service, stylish interior and very tasty food! A great place for a pleasant evening.

One of the best japanese in SF and also very expensive!!

By Manuel |

At Ozumo, you will be delighted by the food experience! The appetizers and mains are delicious, the sake menu spectacular and the service really good. It is very expensive though, be ready for over USD 100 per person dinner!

Good but not good enough for the price

By Aviv R |

Beautiful setting. Excellent service. Amazing selection of Sake including good choice of tasting flights. Sushi very fresh. The not so great part is the rolls which were not tasty, rice too hard and a bit bitter (scallops roll). Restaurant is expensive so the high expectations were not met, but it's still a good choice for sushi dinner.

Wonderful experience and Great food

By zendude |

After spending a cold rainy day soaking wet sight-seeing in S.F., we decided not to venture out for dinner and gave our restaurant Ozumo a try. We were treated one of our best sushi dinner we have so far. We walked in and sat at the bar at no time., The bar tender was friendly, attentive but not intrusive. We are not big eaters so we ordered several Saisho: Wagyu Tarutaru (Wagyu tartare), Dohyo (spicy tuna tartare), Hamachi (yellowtail) and Benitoro (salmon belly). They were absolutely fantastic. Will definitely visit again next time in S.F. Highly recommended.

Katsu curry....yum!

By Travellover6128 |

For a non seafood eater this place was always going to be a challenge. However the gyoza were excellent as was the Kaysu curry. It is on the pricey side, however lunch portions are a great size and there is plenty of variety.

What a shame

By YQUIN |

I was looking forward to come to this place. I guess that maybe too much fame has spoiled the magic about this place. The menu is still superb, the dishes do preserve that mix of authenticity and avantgarde that I (and many others) enjoy from it... but there is more to a restaurant than just the menu. The way the crowd is currently managed is just not right. You can't just have people with a reservation wait for 20min and been beaten up by others passerbies, all that after going through a few items from the drink menu and none of them available. But even if I wish to forgive all that, I can't do the same for the service. It really turns me down if my waiter can't explain the dishes, if he needs to be looking at other guests while talking to me, if he rolls the eyes if while ordering I add and remove items. That is just not acceptable. A high price must include a great service.

Just ok not excellent!

By Hedy F |

We were there for 40th birthday celebration for friends. It was way overpriced and we all left all hungry. Portions are too small and nothing outstanding on that menu to make us want to go back. Dinner plates came all at different times. One person had to wait 20 minutes after we were all finish d eating her dinner arrived. Just rediculous and disappointing! Thank goodness we had cake with us!

Fabulous Japanese food

By MKS760 |

I was staying at the Harbor Court Hotel and tried this mostly out of laziness. Wow! The food is so delicious. I can’t wait to go back

Good for sushi

By weyl-59 |

Good spot for sushi just off the Embarcadero and near the Ferry Building. Nice selection of nigiri and relatively easy to get a table though dining area is large and relatively crowded. Waitperson suggested a nice white wine for dinner, the Merry Edwards sauvignon blanc.

Completely underwhelmed

By RayR |

Fun environment, extensive drink menu, and friendly staff, but the sushi was a BIG disappointment. While the combinations were more creative, the quality was literally on par with the grab and go sushi at my local Whole Foods - but at 4x the price. I will not return.

Service what service?

By KDtraveler |

So service at this establishment apparently was never covered in the training process. Our party of seven waited for 30 minutes for a request for ponzu. Cocktails took forever. We bussed our own table. Are you kidding me! Price point should reflect a perfect dining experience. This was certainly not! San Francisco has so many other dining options that are excellent. Why waste your time with this overpriced dog.

Poor Service

By EJG4 |

I have eaten here before and had very good food and very good experience. We stopped in for a later dinner around 9:00 PM and service was terrible. Sat at bar for 10+ minutes and were never greeted, asked to order drink or given a menu. Then we asked for a table and were sat and waited another 10+ minutes and no waiter/waitress came to our table -- so we left.

Mediocre and Expensive

By greatcats |

We were sorely disappointed in this restaurant after reading glowing reviews. The service was slow and uneven with large gaps between courses. We had to ask for water refills and eating utensils. The food is mediocre, at best for the price. The fish did not seem fresh at all.

Top notch

By GL726 |

Came here with a group of business colleagues for drinks that turned into dinner. We had mix of chicken, pork, beef dishes as well as various sushi. All were outstanding and impeccably prepared as well as fresh. The sake selection is among the best I've seen even in Japan. The downside? The place is $$$$.

Great Sushi!

By CH |

Great ambiance and place! Very good service! Loved the Sake and Beer selection! Very good quality! And delicious Sushi!.... Loved the Rice pudding!

Very good sushi

By pilonfx |

The service here is excellent, and should be applauded as such. The food was very good, yet did not meet the expectations that the price set. The sushi, sashimi, and nigiri were not the stand-out dishes, which is unfortunate for a restaurant of this type. There were excellent tastes and unique combinations, but the fish itself wasn't the highest quality. I'm not from San Francisco, but I bet better food can be found in this city for comparable prices.

Impressive place

By Oliver B |

We had a reservation and started the evening at the bar - the tender was able to mix real good cocktails / drinks. After heading to the table, the waiter was giving us great recommendations and all the food we shared was amazing. Great taste, amazing quality. Anytime again

Superlative Japanese!

By Philip R |

Japanese restaurants outside Japan, and outside East/SouthEast Asia, can be extremely variable, and often disappointing. Ozumo is not in that category - not by a long way. It's a large restaurant, with bar-style seating and ample numbers of tables, in a high-ceilinged conversion of what appears to be an old building. If you are lucky enough to have a window table, the views towards the bay are postcard stuff. We were five, and we arrived late for lunch - but that worked out well, as there were few other diners: the ambiance was quiet, and the service prompt. We ate our way through sundry dished of sashimi and sushi, including plenty of Hokkaido Uni (sea urchin roe) and tuna toro (fatty belly meat) - all of which was wonderfully fresh and extremely tasty. The charcoal roasted black cod was superb. All accompanied by a delicious, fragrant Sake. It would be remiss not to mention the young lady that served us: good wait staff may not be too rare, but exceptional ones are, and this one was exceptional. She knew the produce, including the Sake's, and was able to advise us well. She observed the right balance between proper attention and intrusiveness (how tiresome it is to be constantly asked "is everything okay"), and she had a pleasant personality. We were privileged to be served by her. Ozumo isn't a budget restaurant, but considering the quantity and quality of the food and drink we consumed, the bill was very reasonable indeed. Highly recommended!

Going strong with outdoor seating and carry-out

By OlyBoomer |

I loved Ozumo before the coronavirus and I still love it in spite of the coronavirus. The staff are pleasant and knowledgeable and the food is still fabulous. It can get a bit chilly in the shade on the Embarcadero sidewalk, but they have lots of propane heaters going. If you live in the area and prefer to eat at home it's a quick walk for take-out without those obnoxious delivery company fees. Ozumo is one of those places I really hope makes it through all of this intact.

Phenomenal Japanese Restaurant with a View!

By Patricia K |

I went here with a friend for my birthday dinner and loved this place! The atmosphere was nice, and we had a view of the Bay Bridge from our table. Our waitress was wonderful, and she suggested a few of her favorite things on the menu. We had a wonderful hot sake, and 4 different dishes. We loved the Black Cod, the sliced Flat Iron Beef, the Tuna Tartare, and the Himachi with jalepeno and avocado. Everything was delicious! The waitress even brought over a complementary dessert with a candle. It's a little pricey, but I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a nice Japanese dinner place.

Much to expensive!

By Erikanische |

The location is nice. The food is not bad but far away from being outstanding - the beef should be medium and was well done, as we complained the service told us that the kitchen closed already. Over all it is MUCH to expensive - better you stay away!

Great Sushi and Service

By FamFunIllinois |

I recently had a business dinner here.....from start to finish it was excellent. Service was great. The menu is varied between sushi, rolls and some great apps and dinners. All of the courses were nicely presented and each had great flavor. The yellow fin with Jalepeno and Avacado was superb! Good spirit selection and a nice wine list rounded out this great experience.

Fine dining, very good food

By Maria752013 |

The restaurant is nice decorated, some tables have ocean views, it is in general fully booked, so a reservation is recommended (we have use Open Table app). The food is very tasty, well served; we have tried sushi, tempura schrimps and a very good chocolate fondue dessert.

Interesting Japanese.

By ted m |

Dropped past the restaurant prior to leaving for the airport in time for happy hour. Great selection of interesting, well prepared and tasty small plates and decent value to boot. Good service in an elegant room. Later, watched main dishes going past and everything looked great.Well worth a visit.

Expensive and mediocre cuisine, eat elsewhere

By Foodie |

Do you like slow and flawed service? How about loud and acrid cooking fumes at table side and mediocre expensive cuisine? With all of the amazing restaurants in San Francisco eat somewhere else. Truly disappointed with this restaurant.

Very very impressed

By Luv2hikejulie |

First of all due to a SNAFU with E&O we were left without dinner reservations on a Friday. This was one of the places I had wanted to try but knew our chances of getting a table were slim. We walked in and talked with the hostess and were seated immediately. Our waiter was very attentive, explaining their sakes, menu, and answering our "virgin" sake questions. There were four of us and we ordered a smattering of items from there menu including appetizers, 3 sushi rolls, paella, sashimi, tempura shrimp, four different desserts, a bottle of expensive wine and a couple glasses of sake. Oh my, the food was absolutely delicious and truly some of the best sushi I've ever had. We had enough for sharing and the fondue dessert was basically a dinner. The only reason this isn't 5 stars is because somewhere in the process our ticket was misplaced and one of our sushi rolls came out about 20 minutes after the rest of our food was consumed (and only after inquiring about it). While the menu items are a bit more expensive it is well worth the price. For those more budget minded you can get away with an appetizer, sushi roll, and dessert for about $50.

amazing food

By followmybike |

sushi quality was very high with plenty of choices of fresh seafood. tasted several dishes between tartare, sushi roll, temakis

Excellent food, excellent bartender!

By louise p |

After a long day in the East bay for a ball game (A's vs White Sox) we just wanted something simple, so we went next door to Ozumo. What a score! We sat at the bar and the bartender answered questions about the menu with a high recommendation of the fish we had ordered. The black cod did not disappoint- cooked perfectly and accompanied by a delicious sauce! The bartender was attentive throughout our time at the bar at Ozumo.

Excellent and fresh fusion Japanese restaurant

By alexisonsmith |

We eneded up going here twice in 5 nights it was that good! The fish here is very fresh and when comparing to the fish we ate in Japan this place is pretty close to some Japanese restaurants. The wine and sake list is excellent. Service is OK however I prefer top notch food and drink than service. One of the top restaurants in San Fran.

AMAZING!!!

By Aubree T |

This was our first time in San Francisco so we were just kind of picking places that looked really good and had great reviews. We got really lucky on this pick, it was absolutely amazing! The mabager sat us and was very friendly. Our waiter was Danny and he was fantastic! he was so polite and attentive, and gave us everything we could have possibly needed, we had a wonderful experience! The food was so fresh and excellent! We could not have chosen a better place to celebrate our anniversary. Thank you Ozumo and Danny!

Fantastic food, service and sake!

We went to Ozumo last month and had a phenomenal meal! Everything we ate tasted fresh and delicious and it was obvious a lot of care went into the preparation of each dish. Our waiter, Alan, made excellent recommendations on every dish, all of which were great! Then we were treated to the house sake which was far and away the best sake any of us had ever tasted! All 3 of us ordered 2 more rounds, and while we may have drank a bit to much :-) we were walking to our hotel, and that sake was THAT good! Best meal I've had in San Francisco in a years!

Good food but confusing menu

By Hilary C |

This restaurant was recommended to us as “one of the best Japanese restauants in San Francisco”. I’ve travelled to Japan on a number of occasions on business and stayed with Japanese colleagues so have a reasonable grasp of the cuisine but i found the menu very confusing. We ordered Miso soup and it didn’t arrive so we had it at the end of the meal after we’d asked about it and we thought we’d ordered some dishes with rice but apparently not. This may be the difference between UK / Japanese and US / Japanese - although we regularly eat Japanese food on our trips to the US. Our server tried to be helpful and the food we had was very nice but my husband said he was less than full and it was on the pricey side so all in all, a little disappointing for us.

Delicious food in an elegant setting

This restaurant is pricey, but worth it. If you're looking for a place to celebrate a special occasion or looking for an experience where you're treated like dignitaries, this a great place to do it. It's Japanese fusion, and it's served with the kind of elegance where the wait staff give you the perfect amount of attention and the food is wonderful. We did have one disappointment--we ordered the variety sushi tray, which featured small slices if Wagyu beef (melt in your mouth amazing!) but for the price it seemed that avocado on rice shouldn't really be part of that.

No flavor, no service

By jmsb1969 |

Went to this sushi place based on reviews on trip advisor. The restaurant is very nice looking, trendy, in a good location. Aside from that, we had 5 different rolls, each of them as flavorless as the next one. No bite, no kick, no mix of flavor,.... nothing we have come to expect from a high end sushi place charging around $20 per roll. Last but not least, in the 1.5h we were there, we saw ou waiter 2 may be 3 times. We ordered a second rounds or drinks half way through our food and it showed up at the same time as the bill. Would not recommend, won't go back. If you love great sushi rolls, this is not the place for you.

food was amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Booked for early dinner and had good choice of tables. Staff very helpful and explained the menu. Loved the chefs choice of sushi followed by the black cod. Wow what great food. This is a must for anyone who loves Japanese food.

Great ambiance and fresh sashimi! Quick service. Loved the shrimp tempura and the sushi rolls. They were even able to customize a plate for my toddler.

Good service and excellent food. very pricey for lunch but overall a fine dining restaurant and we didn't have a problem getting a table at noon on Tuesday.

Amazing and different Japanese food with bay bridge views

My wife and I had dinner here and we left completely satisfied with everything. The menu has a great variety. Im a sushi person and have tried a lot of it in different cities. This was for sure the top sushi place. The bartender was fabulous and knew the menu very well. The atmosphere was very laid back and have a good time with some drink. Love Ozumo I will be back when in town.

Great food

Very good food/sushi, but we were in at 8:00, and by 8:30 we had all our food; can’t call that an experience. But the food was very good, and the service very friendly.

$1,350 for seven people?!

I had out of town guests come visit. So the waiter at Ozumo keeps insisting to my guests that they order the most expensive dishes. I didn’t want to appear rude or cheap so the waiter picks up on this and goes whole hog. By mid dinner I wasn’t even sure my guests had ordered the dishes that were coming. I get that everyone in SF wants in in the gold rush, but this is exactly what has become wrong with SF. Mediocre quality at exorbitant prices. I’ve been coming here for years but no mas. This place has become a tourist trap rip off.

Yum Yum Yum

Overrated and overpriced

Went here by my hotel recommendation and had hamachi appetizer, seaweed salad, hamachi and crab-tempura rolls The the hamachi appetizer was somewhat interesting the play on hot chili was a bit overdone as it obscured the taste of the thin yellow tail slices. Everything else was pretty mediocre and overpriced The place does look good though especially in the front section facing the water
