Great service, delicious food and a awesome wine

By Johan P |

We decided to try this place with some friends for an early New Year's Eve dinner and we were not disappointed. The service was excellent and everyone was friendly. My wife ordered the gnocchi and loved it. I had the lamb shank and didn't even have to use a knife. It was perfectly cooked all the way to the bone. We ordered a lot of wine and the waitress ended up pouring red wine into a glass with white wine already in it. She immediately brought out a glass of the same red wine to replace the one she missed up. The atmosphere was laid back and then started to get crazier as the night went on, so definitely a place we'll have to visit again.

Happy Hour Bargain

By fmcintyre |

Great bar men who know how to make a cocktail. Full of locals and 4-6 is Happy Hour when normal 11 dollar cocktails drop to 7 dollars. Lots of wood and a long bar give this place an antique atmosphere and feels good after a long day to drop by for a quick one or two!

Getting to be a favorite of mine.

By Patricia W |

I've been a few times now. When alone, I prefer the bar at the window, for people watching. Inside, happy hour gets quite busy. The specialty cocktails are popular and delicious, although pricey. I was happy with both food and service.

Best Happy Hour on Fillmore

By garykniveton |

This is great place to mingle with locals especially between 4 and 6 with $4 draft beers and $7 cocktails. There are also some tasty bar snacks at $5 so you can have a great couple of hours for good value in this great part of town. It's easy to get to as well as the 22 bus stops right outside, you can follow Fillmore right to downtown.

Perfect spot for a quick bite

We were referred to Palmer’s, as it had been reopened after 3 years of being closed. The atmosphere was laid back my French Dip was tasty. Everyone enjoyed their meals.

Flip a coin

Happy hour, from 4pm to 6pm, is great. Their menu changes; on their current menu the pulled pork slides, mussels and meatballs are best. Their flat breads are good and light on your stomach, but heavy on your wallet (a bit expensive for what you get.) Service is better or worse depending on whom you get (as is usually the case). I’e had great service and not so good service in the same visit. I was served a bad piece of meat, in half of their fried chicken sandwich and when I mentioned it to the waitress, all she could do was say, “I’m sorry.” You know what should have happened and so did she. In summary: their a good neighborhood hang out, but inconsistent; no culinary landmark, but not a bad place to drop by and have a drink.

All around good place

By Patty R |

Went there for a casual business dinner on a Sunday evening- party of 4. Had a few apps: meatballs, burata and bacon wrapped shrimp - all good. Most of the table had he salmon, I had the trout - loved it! Waitress was good in giving us time we need to discuss business, not rushing us at all. The creme brulee as great.

Retro, Upscale Style - American menu with a French twist

By MiepGies |

Palmers Tavern on Fillmore Street is a new restaurant which opened about 2 months ago. We had our first meal here last week and we were impressed as we always looking for new restaurants to frequent. Palmers Tavern is our new favorite. I had two veggie side orders as my meal and they were both fabulous. (I'm a vegetarian and I'm always looking for tasty green vegetable side orders to eat as my entree.) I'm tired of pasta and salads and these items were fabulous. The brussels sprouts with parmesan cheese and the spinach with light cream sauce were so yummy (really!). My guy ordered a hamburger (we eat out frequently so we often eat simple food) and he gave it a rating of 9 out of 10 (that's a high rating from him...). We loved the retro decor lamps on the bar, the paneled walls, the lovely bar maid (who looks like Rosie the Riveter), the attentive bar tender in the white jacket, the polite hostess and our prompt waitress. The menu is American with a French Bistro style. I believe they are open from 5PM to midnight for dinner and/or drinks & bar snacks.

Trendy Wannabe

By William S |

Clean location, active bar scene located in San Francisco's lower Pacific Heights. Service, very bad. Wait staff politically spinned many excuses for their lack of attention. New York steak, (we asked Pittsburgh style and defined same) wasn't close to our suggestion. Mussels in a light wine sauce was overcooked and actually drenched in a thick tomato soup and served without a spoon. Couldn't finish it. Our wine was great, a Napa cabernet, was outstanding and expensive. Thank the lord the wine was produced by somebody other than the owners of this place. Unless in desperation, may be difficult to return.

Saturday brunch before the Clay

By Mary E |

This is an American/French style tavern borrowing from several eras. Taxidermied deer heads, a big fish adorn the walls with a mural on another. Chandelier & sconce lighting add to it's charm. Sports were on the TV bar, but thankfully at a very low volume. Red leatherette booths, comfortable side chairs make for cozy dining. Palmer's Tavern is located in Upper Pacific Heights at the corner of Clay St. & Fillmore St. The exterior has great black & white awnings with a wonderful neon sign. In good weather you can sit outside. I ordered a side of deviled eggs (2 halves) accompanied by pickled baby carrots, cauliflower, red onions with bacon. The wine I chose was Miraval Provence Rose & Radicchio salad with greens, avocado and goat cheese. Warm sourdough bread & butter was an additional charge, but a necessary one. I would recommend giving Palmer's Tavern a try. Within a couple of blocks there's lots of small, high-end shops plus Peet's coffee next to a great bookstore & specialty ice cream shop. The wonderful historic film house, the Clay is directly across the street and that's where I was headed to see Bombshell about Hedy Lamarr.

Nice place for a drink

By drtgfnz |

Went in just in Happy Hour. Nice place for a drink until it gets busy. Then quite noisy. Serving staff were fine. Bar nibbles available although we did not try these. Nice location in the neighbourhood.

Casual ambiance but an excellent meal

By TwinMom1995 |

We met a group at Palmer's Tavern for dinner. I had the Sage Gnocci and my husband had the Filet of Salmon. We each had a cocktail too. The meal was excellent and the service was good. Other folks at the table had trout, short ribs and NY strip steak and were happy with their meals too. Surprisingly the cost of the meal was reasonable especially considering that this is San Francisco. Would definitely go back when in the area again.

Better for small plates

By Mynonnie |

This place has a great vibe. Very lively, nice bar, and delicious drinks. Had dinner here and the food was ok. Appetizers were delicious. I had the radicchio salad and my husband had the risotto bites. Both substantial portions. The entrees is where it fell flat. Husband had the burger with Parmesan fries and mashed potatoes for sides. Fries delicious. Burger ok. Mashed potatoes very bland. I had the salmon entree. Just ok overall. Didn’t enjoy the spinach with it. Very soggy. We’d go back, but just for drinks and small bites. Truthfully, the radicchio salad was such a generous size that I could’ve stopped there and would’ve been satisfied. Service was great.

A quick beer before dinner up the street

By indytrims |

This is a vibrant tavern with indoor and outdoor seating. They have a small, but good selection of local draft beers, a big selection of bourbon, rye, and scotch whiskeys, and a nice wine list. The appetizers are outstanding. Try the Brussels sprout chips for $2.50.

Very Hip, Good Food, Great Cocktails

By davismama2003 |

This is a neat little place, filled with hipsters on a Friday evening, I thought we would never get in for an app and a drink. They found us a table pretty quickly and amazingly our appetizers came out pretty fast. We had our kids with us and they were very nice to them, and our waitress was very friendly, even though we took up a table just for a round of drinks and couple apps. The interior is hunting lodge hipster and the cocktail list is interesting. I would definitely go back for drink. Our appetizers were good, but nothing terribly exciting.

Surprise!

By LSherry1914 |

We were waiting for the movie to start at the Clay, across the street. We needed a bite to eat. Who knew that Palmer had weekend brunch. I thought it was only a bar. They offered an extensive menu. I just wanted a side of eggs and they were done to perfection. Not everyone gets the " over medium" part right. My husband had a great combo breakfast. We'll be back. We are often on Filmore, so glad to add a place to happily dine. Pleasant wait staff.

Disappointing

By CJ G |

Palmer's Tavern disappoints on so many levels. The menu at Palmer's Tavern centers on more substantial dishes and could use the addition of some lighter selections for women or those who are less hungry. The roasted beet salad was rather small and only average. Ordered medium-rare, the Wagyu beef entrée ($23) was overcooked and tough. Served with cheese, lettuce, and pickle on a plump bun, the burger ($13) was OK, but nothing special. French fries were so salty that they were almost inedible. While service at the bar was slow, the cocktails ($8.75) that were finally served were well made. Service in the dining room is disorganized at best and haphazard at worst. There seems to have been no planning to the waitstaff's workflow, and there is a great deal of wasted effort, resulting in slow, inefficient service. A surprising disappointment from Albert and Klaus Rainer of the wonderful Leopold's on Polk Street, Palmer's Tavern is trying hard, but failing miserably.

Authentic great atmosphere

By marrei |

The food is not exceptional but definitley good, the drinks very good, the service excellent, the place in authenic and unpretentious enought to stick out among the too artificially sophisticated places in Pacif Height, this is simple and relaxed and I higly reccomend it

Good Happy Spot- Craft Beers

By Peter T |

Cozy Corner Tavern with good craft beers and burgers. Stopped in for drinks one night and back for dinner the next night.

Good Vibe, Classic SF Bar Style, Good Food

By John G |

Family stopped in here for dinner on a busy mid-week night recently. The place is an old style SF bar/tavern..narrow, nicely appointed with photos of famous guests, city scenes, etc. Somewhat noisy- this is a good place for friends, small groups who want a sense of activity and liveliness. We enjoyed some generous pours in our cocktails, a delicious Palmer's burger with cheddar; roast idaho trout, and another Palmer's burger with bleu cheese and truffle fries. We split a radicchio salad. All a good treat! Be ready for SF prices and mandate $$$.

Benefits of walking a neighborhood

By Leigh A |

While visiting very close and very sick friend at Pacific Hospital we decided to take a walk around the neighborhood. Just down the Clay street section of the hospital is Palmers. It is a great neighborhood tavern and dinner house. The three of us were happy with our drinks, Long Island with all five liquors, Gin and tonic with the real tonic and a 'crisp, clean' draft beer. While sipping our drinks we viewed the appetizers on the menu and our mouths began to water. We ordered the mussels, pawns and flatbread and they were all FANTASTIC.

Awesome!

By cundotravels |

Went on a Tuesday night and the bartender did an awesome job of introducing me to his brand of mixed cocktails and showing me the eclectic collection of liquors. The atmosphere is excellent and great for meeting new people or to just enjoy a good drink.

Nice vintage decor and red booths

By Tracy C |

came on a Friday night around 10pm. Pretty crowded with a mixed group of people at the bar and eating dinner at the booths. Just had drinks but that's where the 3 stars come... I ordered a Mojito for my friend and asked the tab to be closed. The waiter handed me the tab for $6 and some change. I didn't think anything of it and put down my $10. Assuming he would keep the tip which he did. Then 5 mins later I decided to order a Grayhound. The tab came for that and it included the Grayhound AND the mojito (which I already paid). Luckily the owner seemed to be very attentive and I hailed him down. He took the tab to the waiter, who brought it back to me with my $10 bill AND 2 separate checks for the mojito and the grayhound. The waiter was very direct and rude (probably because I mentioned the mistake) and said he accidently charged me for a beer instead of mojito. So...ok, I paid the $22ish for my drinks and the change came back, MINUS my actual change. He brought me just the dollars.. I'm not stickler about change but I felt like he tried jipping me. If the first tab was wrong why didn't he point it out instead of charging me again? Or why didnt he just let thst pass? Anyways the food looked good, but it wasnt fun dealing with rhe goof in my tabs.

Great atmosphere

By KAP |

Great atmosphere with bar, tables and booths. The place was hopping late on a weeknight. The food was excellent - - the curry fries are outrageous. However, contrary to a few other recent reviews, Palmers certainly is not inexpensive.

Casual while also upscale

By happygolucky090 |

My family ate at a Saturday lunch Palmers in late August 2017. The place has a casual atmosphere with a slightly upscale/ modern vibe. It has all the trappings of a historic pub without feeling stuffy. The food was fresh and well prepared. I had a lunch menu item and my wife had brunch. Both meals were excellent. My kids (5 & 2) ate all their food as it was fresh and not stale like most restaurants kid menu items. The icing on the cake was the 80's soundtrack- the best I've ever heard!

WONDERFUL

By Linda W |

Great service, wonderful food. Don't think there is anything bad on the he menu. We ordered the flour less cake and shared it after our more than adequate dinners...Oh my gosh you really really need to save room for some.

Delicious

Delicious food, nice atmosphere & great staff. Try the trout or Lamb Shank. And love the Myrtle Avenue cocktail !

Happy Hour Early Dinner with Family

By Liz C |

Mediocre at best. Fantastic old interior, with lovely booths and a great old wooden bar. I'd go back for Happy Hour vib alone. Good prices on Happy Hour food specials BUT...you get what you pay for! .We had 5 dishes we shared between 3 of us: Bacon wrapped shrimp with cucumber salad (grease from bacon on shrimp bleed into salad, sadly, good salad), mac and cheese (OK, but nothing special, sauce thin), pork sliders (best of what we got), mussels (ok, but again, greasy tomato sauce), and very greasy fried brussel sprout chips (great concept, but utterly greasy). Service fine, we sat outside and enjoyed the sunshine. Dinner MIGHT be better but since would be same cooks, doubt it. GET RID OF THE GREASE!!!

Nice bar, quieter than Harry's Bar

By donswim |

We popped in for a pre dinner drink, a relaxed bar with only one TV, We enjoyed watching the efficient barman making cocktails. The food looked good so we ordered a plate of meatballs, which appeared quickly and were very very tasty. We preferred this bar to Harry's as it was quieter and more relaxed. The couple at the bar next to us managed a deep and meaningful conversation.

Amazing salmon!

By edodd419 |

The waiter said one of the most popular cocktails was the Parisian Bouquet. I got mine with vodka au lieu de gin. It was delightfully bitter. The restaurant features many interesting cocktails and a good assortment of wines, both by the bottle and glass. I’m not sure who our waiter was, as he failed to introduce himself, but he took nice care of us. Hubby got the steak; I got the salmon. Both were delicious. The brussel sprouts weren’t too shabby either.

Classic Bar and Grill

By Frank |

Sunday brunch here is excellent. There is something on the menu for everyone. We would like to have scored a seat outside, but settled for a booth in back. It is a popular place for friends to linger over a meal. The historic photos add a lot to the classic ambience. Our omelettes were perfect and we thought the potatoes and coffee were very good. I don’t know how old this place is, but it dowels like and old SF landmark. We’ll go back for brunch.

Top Notch

By KathieVee |

If Klaus or Albert greet you at the door, you feel like you've just walked into a friend's place. They are the glue and the charm of this corner restaurant that has been going strong after many have tried and failed to make a go at that location on Upper Fillmore. There's a full bar that is always hopping, great food, with even a bit of Austrian flavor sneaking in, right across from the Clay Theatre to grab a bite before or after a usually eclectic film.

A gem

By Marion k |

The welcoming twinkle of lights and warmth of welcome - we knew we were in the right place immediately. Excellent food, friendly service - just what we were looking for. We began with a drink on the high stools in the window, but were immediately tempted by the starters menu, so we got stuck in right away. The roasted bone marrow was superb and the flatbreads were delicious. We moved in to the restaurant proper for mains, the hamburger again did not disappoint and the lamb and chicken dishes were well prepared and generous without being enough for two people each, as is so often (and off-puttingly) the case in the US. Prices are very reasonable. Service was good, despite the waiter owning up to being on his third day on the job. Would definitely go back, this place comes highly recommended.

Fun bar...terrific restaurant

By Robert M |

You may be drawn to the quite wonderful bar, but don't forget that they serve some great food...and it's reasonably priced! No mean feat for their Pac Heights neighborhood. Sunny outdoor tables on Fillmore, as well as oversized booths in the back. A mainstay.

Gorgeous Atmospheric Room With Good Food And Service

By bccrab |

A Place that seems like a blast from the past and yet the entire staff is young, Palmers is a great choice in this area. The lighting and red leather booths along with the old school music and animal heads above the bar give this place so much charm and atmosphere. The food is very good too. Service is friendly. We really enjoyed having dinner here on the 4th of July to escape the craziness in other parts of town. The place reeks atmosphere and I'd definitely stop here again.

Happening Spot

By KathieVee |

When you are welcomed into their "home" by either Albert or Klaus, genuine charm and hospitality at its finest floods the room. One can't help but smile broadly. The food and service is exceptional, as it has been in all their restaurants. Less of an Austrian flair than its sister restaurant on Union and Polk, Leopold's, but there's at least one family recipe to be found on the menu. Lively atmosphere on weekends and on lovely days when you can enjoy the good weather and people watching. A mainstay of the neighborhood!

Fun spot on Fillmore

By Lscottie |

We just stopped in for appetizers and drinks in the small but cozy lounge right in the corner at the windows. Great deviled eggs and risotto balls. Beautiful long bar and cozy dinner seating. I’d go back for dinner.

Great atmosphere and service

By jengled |

We were on our way from Golden Gate Park to North Beach for dinner and were early so we stopped in for a drink. Great decor - kind of like "Cheers". We sat at the bar. The service was professional and friendly. The place was quite full and energetic. We would stop in again.

Overcrowded and noisy

By Lele214 |

A friend of mine recommended this place and so we went in. We waited for 8-10 mins and had our table. Service was good enough, and food was ok, a bit above average but the noise insidie unbearable to carry on a simple conversation. Definitely not my kind of place when dining or having a drink.

Lots of options to choose from

By afelric1 |

We ordered a bunch of small plates. There were so many options to choose from. We weren't a fan of the pulled pork... its a muchhh bigger sandwich than you think. The flatbread is very good. Mostly everything was good. The Mac n cheese is to die for.

Nice Place

By flyingspa |

A really nice place to hang out n have a good drink. Location is really interesting and a good lively neighbourhood around. Of path of the normal tourist areas on SF. Go n try👍

Great happy hour

We went for happy hour and enjoyed many reasonably priced small plates. Tasty sliders and ribs. Delicious fries. Nice wait staff and cool music.

Great Atmosphere & Delicious!

By TennisGuy777 |

We were in Pacific Heights visiting two of our adult children. Very nice they seated us in the private booth in the back. Service was excellent. Everything we tried was fantastic... From the cocktails, appetizers and main courses. I particularly enjoyed the Pave Potatoes. Highly recommend.
