Hailing from Los Angeles, which has a large Korean population and a fairly large Koreatown with a fair share of Korean BBQ places, I am familiar with the concept. Perilla Steakhouse touts itself as a fusion of the classic Chicago steakhouse with a Korean BBQ place. I found it to be pretty classically Korean, with the requisite in-table grills and perhaps a wider variety of premium sides and additions (like caviar). It also had better ventilation and of course higher prices. Here someone cooks your meat for you on the grill. Perilla Steakhouse is located in the L 7 Hotel by Lotte in the Loop. As such, it also serves interesting breakfast and lunch menus with American and Korean options. For dinner, one has the choice of 2 steakhouse sets, Premium or Wagyu, priced per person, with 6 oz of various cuts. They come with several banchan (sides), ssam (lettuce and perilla leaves), sauces, japchae (wok-fried glass noodles) and a scallion salad. Meats can also be ordered a la carte. I ordered the Wagyu set, which had ribeye, ribeye cap, short rib, NY strip and marinated short rib. I think the marinated short rib and the NY strip had the most flavour. The banchan were okay; I wish there had been some fresher options instead of just pickled and/or fermented ones. The salad and japchae were fine. Just the set is a lot of food, but I also wanted to try some of the sides/starters, so I tried the Korean fried chicken and egg souffle. The chicken was appropriately crispy, mildly spicy. I prefer a sweeter finish that some versions offer. The souffle was appropriately fluffy and tasty. For dessert, I ordered the Perilla sundae. It was a pretty classic sundae with the addition of fermented cherries and puffed rice. Overall a decent dinner. I think on the whole I prefer Chinese and Japanese cuisine over Korean, Indian or Thai, perhaps partly out of familiarity and also because I am a wimp when it comes to spice/heat. That being said, one of my favourite Los Angeles restaurants was the now-closed Yangban, a Korean restaurant with some Jewish influences.

This is the perfect spot for a nice date or small-to-mid-sized group gatherings! I came here with my husband for my birthday, and everything was excellent. The menu offered a great variety, including seafood, traditional Korean dishes, creative twists, steak, sides, and even some vegetarian options. We left feeling so full. Most dishes are easily shareable, and the cocktails were unique and delicious! Our server was attentive and did a great job explaining the menu. If you choose any of the grill-able options and are nervous about cooking your own food, don’t worry, the server will do it for you. They even gave me a birthday card at the end of our meal. A bonus is the location right next to the river in the heart of downtown Chicago! I would definitely dine here again.

Perilla is Chicago’s new downtown gem. The unique and delicious dishes paired with the impeccable service made our experience truly memorable. Thank you to the Perilla team, especially Tae and Thomas for their tremendous hospitality. Our visit was smooth, organized and took our palate to the heart of modern Korean cuisine. Try their wagyu or premium cut sets, share their appetizers and sides with friends and do not forget to savor a cocktail from their great selection. The restaurant’s atmosphere makes it perfect for a business lunch, romantic dinner or a fun evening with close friends. Thanks again!

The food ranged from good to delicious but the experience was so disappointing. The meal was going well until the end. We opted out of dessert but my cousin was drinking her second cocktail and I was drinking coffee. The server came over, poured me some and then took the French press which was half full away. He didn’t ask if I were done. I said something to one of the many servers and he said they needed the table. Even thought another table had been occupied when we entered (the server said it was manger’s family) we were being asked to leave. We would have left in the next 10 minutes anyway but the rudeness and abruptness was so off putting. . He said he would take the coffee off the bill, but no apology. Another table had also sat down around the same time we did. The mother said they were early and didn’t want to order until their son arrived. They were finished but they hadn’t gotten a check. I guess they didn’t need that table.

Located along the riverwalk in downtown, Perilla Steak delivered in offering a unique steakhouse experience. You have the meats, cold seafood options, and the steakhouse staple trimmings but you also get the Korean staples such as rice cakes (with a twist), pajun with crab bits, and Korean stews. The restaurant itself is beautiful. From the moment you walk through, you’re greeted by a blend of Korean traditional with a mix of modern aesthetics. The wood accents mixed in to the contemporary design of the restaurant sets a cozy, elegant atmosphere. Great for date nights! Perilla Steak shines brightest with its diverse and well thought out menu. The Steakhouse Sets are where you’ll get the full experience. Tables are equipped with built-in grills where servers will cook the meats to perfection. However, if you’re feeling hands-on you can take the reigns and create your own perfect bite. Despite the restaurant’s name having ‘Steak’ in it, the gems are in the First Bites, Shareables, and Desserts. You’ll know what I mean once you try them all. But if you have to limit yourself, try the Monkey Bread and each of the first bites. Don’t skip on the desserts either, they are all good! Again, if you had to choose one, try their black sesame dessert. BTW, they offer breakfast and lunch! Take a weekend, stay at the Lotte Hotel, pop into Perilla Steak for an early lunch. Enjoy a glass of champagne with some chilled king crab at the restaurant, take a breakfast sandwich to go and walk down to the River Walk. Or perhaps you’d rather have their lunch set that gives you a spread of different side dishes accompanied by a main. Can’t go wrong with either option. Last but not least, the staff at Perilla Steak are attentive and friendly. Don’t be shy in asking for recommendations if you aren’t sure what you should be ordering. They will portion perfectly for your party size.

Executive chef Andrew Lim is a Chicago-born, second generation Korean/American who is excited to live out his long-held vision and dream to share his culture and cuisine with the city he loves. So he opened his Perilla Steakhouse on July 3, 2024. Located at 225 North Wabash Avenue, near the corner of Wabash and Wacker Drive, in the space formerly occupied by Kimpton Hotel Monaco Chicago, this Korean/American steakhouse is housed inside the 13-story L7 Chicago By Latte Hotel. Breakfast is served from 7 to 11 Monday through Friday and 8 to 11 on Saturday and Sunday. Brunch is served from 11 to 2:30 Saturday and Sunday. Lunch is served from 11 to 2:30 Monday through Friday. Dinner is served from 5 to 9:30 Monday through Thursday, 5 to 10:30 on Friday, 4 to 10:30 on Saturday and 4 to 9 on Sunday. Each table in the 111-seat restaurant is fitted with a grill top. Lim says his new adventure is a Korean spin on celebrated Gibson's Steakhouse. For a quick breakfast snack, try the breakfast sandwich with bacon, egg, cheese and hash browns nestled between a house-made English muffin, a spin on McDonald's McMuffin. For dinner, my wife and I started with monkey bread with honey butter, Caesar salad with Little Gem lettuce, parmesan cheese and milk bread croutons, mixed green salad with yellow radish, scallion and lemon plum vinaigrette and prime beef fried rice with garlic rice, fried egg, pickled onion and mushrooms. For our entrees, we chose Gulf white shrimp and 60-day dry aged 16-ounce ribeye steak. For dessert, we indulged in Banana Cremeux made with forbidden rice, black sesame and bananas. Perilla, welcome to the very competitive world of steakhouses in Chicago.

We had a great supper in a welcoming setting that made us feel really welcome. The staff always made sure we had everything we needed and was kind and attentive. I will most certainly be going back to this place when I visit again! The environment made the occasion feel unique and laid back, and the flavors were perfect.

Abigail is terrific. She remembered our food allergies 2 days after our first visit. The breakfast offerings are good and the restaurant was not too busy for breakfast The hostess is friendly and immediately addressed an error in our take away order.

Had to get brunch this morning, and had several options but opted to eat here since I’ve heard good things about their brunch and it was located at our hotel. While the menu is limited, the selection was good. My wife and I both had the steak and eggs with Korean rice and the steak was perfectly cooked and very tasteful as was the rice and eggs done correctly, they also had homemade English muffin which I had to try and it was also outstanding as well as the homemade sausage, I cannot speak for dinner at this location, but the night prior I did have a drink at the bar, and the barkeep was outstanding, I would strongly endorse this restaurant for quality made from scratch brunch
