Quick yet delicious brunch

By Alikatt |

The simple, clean lines, mostly white modern look/feel including the white mid-century modern Panton chairs, with open layout is always aesthetically pleasing to me - the highlight of course is the food. Although I only went for brunch and had the buckwheat crepe with lobster mushrooms, aged goat cheese and topped with egg (over easy) every bite was a delight. Flavors were subtle yet detectable. I am not a fan of goat cheese and was a bit concerned it may put me off. To my surprise, it wasn't strong and lent flavor to the dish in a subtle way. Quality and fresh ingredients abound as I looked onto the prep area and chefs on duty right from the counter seating. Not only did they did everything in sync, the dishes they prepared all looked delicious and everyone working that morning looked happy and relaxed even though it was hotter then usual, temperature/weather wise. The pastry chef also took the time to explain the different pastries he brought out and how one of them is a specialty in Brittany, where the founding chef and principal, Ms.Crenn is from. It was an unexpected stop just before they opened at 11 a.m. on a Sunday on my way to an acupuncture appointment (which unfortunately prevented me from having alcoholic beverages and sampling their amazing collection of freshly-baked French patisserie) I took a couple in a baggie to enjoy later. The croissant with pine nuts filled with sweet and sour lemon jam is the winner for me over the Breton pastry which to me was just too sweet. I will definitely be back for lunch or dinner with wine or champagne and bring my friends too.

Great dining experience

By Lynn P |

Excellent, low key set up with great service and really excellent, imaginative food. Prix fixe menu with each course beautifully presented and explained. There is also an accompanying wine option but we confined ourselves to single glass as there was driving to do later. It looked like a fabulous option if you really wanted to push the boat out and had alternative transport arrangements in place.

service was surprisingly bad

By vile10 |

came here for brunch, food's decent, service brought it all the way down made a 1pm reservation, arrived around 12:50pm, there was a pair in front of us waiting to be seated and probably less than 4 tables already seated my count is there were more people working there than customers including the kitchen staff no one seemed to be interested in talking to us, not even a gesture, this multi-color-hair chick walked passed us like 4 times and just treated us like we didn't exist, the rest of the three were busy putting napkins on the tables until I had to actually stopped a guy to ask to be seated being Asian living in California for more than 20 years, this is one of the very few times I felt like races might come in the story and I'm usually very reluctant of mentioning that, however, it's unfortunately obvious that the same multi-color-hair chick who walked passed us 4 times greeted and seated a white guy after us almost immediately, and while she's only willing to use two words to answer our question about the menu, she could tell a story about a drink to the same white guy she seated who happened to sit next to our table. I also couldn't help but notice that the two least attended tables are both Asian, us and the Asian pair waiting in front of us earlier enough say I will not go back to the restaurant

So French, so lovely

By UnrepentantFoodie |

Like Grant M's wife, we saw Dominique Crenn's episode of Chef's Table and that convinced us to make a reservation here for lunch. Our lunch was lovely. We ordered a full bottle of an excellent French wine (the list is very geeky with excellent under-the-radar stuff like the Altesse we chose) and inched our way through four shared plates. We didn't want a a ton of food, we just wanted to spend a ton of time contemplating what we ate. Petit Crenn, nearly all white inside and homey, with excellent servers, is a wonderful place for that style of dining. Everything we ate was en pointe. Well prepared and sensitively plated, and reflective of Dominique's femininity and grace. Our only disappointment? I was hungry for a green salad and there wasn't one on the menu. I'm one of those who devote a certain portion of each day's eating to raw food, and there was only one raw item on the menu, a small cherry tomato salad on a slightly oxidized avocado puree. And lovely as it was to look at scattered with elderflowers (!!), it was tiny and didn't include the greens I would have so appreciated. Further, when I asked our server about salad, he confirmed there wasn't one on the menu. "But I didn't I see one," I said gesturing to another table, "in front of the guy who was there earlier?" Oh no, I was told, those greens were on the side (with a Croque Madame, I think it was) but not separately available. But they were in the house, so were the chefs, and the restaurant wasn't even half full. I get the whole special-order problem, but honestly, a French cafe of this caliber could and should have put something together for a customer obviously desiring and expecting something so simple and perfectly in season.

Culinary Experience in a fun neighborhood

By SleeplessInDC |

Wonderful evening at Chef Crenn's other restaurant. Enjoyed the wine pairings offered with the fixed menu. Opted for the additional mashed potatoes addition. Food was wonderfully fresh and tastes were clear and complex. Lightest gnocchi I've ever had. Service was initially a little rushed but was slowed after we asked for more time per course given the wine pairings. Highly recommended.

Sadly disappointing

By JOEL S |

I had high hopes for Petit Crenn: “celebrated chef does set menu at lower price”. Unfortunately, the food disappoints. There were three of us, and all had eaten at very good restaurants worldwide. One had a catering company in Copenhagen and the other two are very competent home cooks. We all found the food to be lacking in taste and bite. Five (very small) courses of mostly bland and mushy food. Come on, a itty bit of sea urchin floating in what seemed a lot like ranch dressing is not my idea of great food. And, to be complete fair, the food wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t all that great. The service was ok, the room a bit noisy and the wine list grossly overpriced. If you go to Petit Cren, I strongly suggest that you bring wine and pay the $40 corkage- a much better value.

Tasty eats

Four of us got to together for a delightful meal. Petit Crenn presents a tasting menu with optional wine pairings. Making reservations was a breeze thru Resy app. The server was very pleasant relating each course with the wine. The wait staff was attentive but discreet.

Wonderful experience

By TinkLizzie |

Our dinner was wonderful last Friday. We were seated immediately for our reservation, and food began to arrive almost immediately. And did not stop, with one course more delicious than the last. Each offering was a perfect amount and the food was carefully prepared and well seasoned, without being pretentious or precious. Wonderful food in a casual environment made for a warm and comfortable evening. My one quibble is they have nothing non-alcoholic to drink other than water, which was a disappointment. Otherwise I highly recommend!

not good at half the price

By barolobrunello |

this place is a complete rip-off. the portions were very small and the prices were very high. overall the food was ok, not great. one portion (the main portion of fish) was very good but it was so small we each got only two bites. stay away...

Good flavour, down to earth with a homey feel

By SFOYYZ_Eric |

Came here over a week ago for dinner, and we had the tasting menu. The food was fresh, simple, and full of flavour. The dishes were served in home sharing style. I wish the portion could be slightly bigger. Don't get me wrong, we had enough to eat. I just want to have an extra bite. The server was friendly. The atmosphere was chilled and casual. But probably because of the hype, I was expecting a little bit more. Not quite getting the whoa factor I was hoping to experience.

First and only visit

By catraveller98 |

Meal with occasional highlights (3 out of 8 -adding in complimentary macarons ), light on quantity, uncaring server and chefs that reused sample spoons for tasting in an open kitchen.

Total disappointment

By Didonesko |

For a Crenn fan, very much looking forward to come all the way to San Francisco from Europe to taste her food, it was the worst meal I had in the States. Very uncaring waiter. I could barely understand the ingredients or what was being served. The price was exorbitant for what it was, which would have been ok for a decent meal from a highly praised chef. Instead two of us got one plate to share at each course. Three people were also sharing plates. The food itself was nothing special - a couple of radishes and mini scallops, salmon fillet that I could cook at home, macarons and a lemon curd tart where the base was inedible. We had a long wait for each course which was explained by the fact that every course was cooked in a batch for all tables seated at a certain hour. This made us wait longer for a meal even though we had finished earlier with the previous course. I hope the main Crenn restaurant can live up to its fame. This one can not.

Shocking

By TheLadyPamela |

Carbonised toast followed by the same toast with a mussel on top followed by some low cost unknown baked fish followed little gem lettuce leaf followed by dunkin doughnuts and sweets equals 660 usd for 4 people. The staff assume their wine is never corked and that white burgundy is best served and maintained warm. The loud music must be for the benefit of the staff. It is certainly difficult for their customers to communicate with them as a result. The best part of the dinner was our charming guests and the badoit water.

Among the cream of the crop

By Andy B |

Petit Crenn is the spin-off from Atelier Crenn the Michelin star restaurant of Dominique Crenn- the French chef. Petit Crenn should be rated at Michelin 2 star or above for the overall quality of the dining experience and especially for the quality and artistry of the food. It is not a budget-breaker to dine at this casual restaurant and even at lunch one receives a memorable meal. Rather than wax romantic about the food I can only say Go- Dine- Enjoy this wonderful little place.

Amazing tasting menu

By Hillary D |

My husband and I loved our tasting menu a few weeks back and it was a great overall dining experience. The staff was passionate about their food and answered all of our questions. We loved every single dish!

Light Sunday brunch

By Jennifer M |

Went to Petit Crenn for Sunday brunch. Quality very good. Attention to detail noted. Tips: Don't go if you are expecting a large meal. These are light delicate foods. Don't go if you don't like vegetarian or fish. No hearty meats on this menu! Menu options are very limited. i.e. Only one dessert option. A bit too costly for what it is but certainly an enjoyable experience.

Fantastic lunch and french wine by the glass

By lrhorer |

I watched Dominique Crenn on the Netflix series The Chef's Table. I was mesmorized and had to try her restaurants. First stop Le Petit Crenn. Small but focused lunch menu, seafood driven. Started with raw oysters and gruyere gougeres with a glass of champagne, fantastic. Then we had the gnocchi and the cured trout tartine. Everything was delicious. We're planning to go back to try dinner. The space is french contemporary, clean and modern line. Small space, open kitchen, happy cooks singing to 80's tunes. I noticed service was included in the check. The service was attentive but not as warm and welcoming as I would have liked given it was our first time there. We will definitely go again and recommend to others.

seafood centric delicious yes casual

By Lisa B |

The new offering from Dominique Crenn honors her grandmother and the fish focused cuisine of Brittany. A very beige, pleasant dining room, which feels like home. Food was consistently delicious, with simple flavors highlighted beautifully. We did notice a tendency to oversalt. The wine pairing was pricey but well chosen. Attention to detail was evident. Service was impeccable. The parading of the fish we were eating for the main course was a fond throwback to dinners in Europe and Chinatown. The whole experience made us feel lovingly held and fed.

Loved the multi course menu here

By Bondy1982 |

We went here and we thoroughly enjoyed the multi-course set menu which centers around seafood, Oysters and an amazing roasted whole fish. There are some amazing wines to choose from on the Wine list.

Impressive meal in a relaxed atmosphere

By wgr |

We had the prix fixe menu, bubbly cocktails, a bottle of wine and shared the add on caviar course and the cheese course. The only somewhat disappointing course was the $45 caviar course with a sort of creme sauce. I would have saved by $45. Our server honestly told us that they are instructed to tell customers that each should order the add ons but was happy to have us split the course. Otherwise we would not have ordered it at all. The other courses were inventive, sophisticated and full of flavour. The main course was halibut and while it can be dry, this halibut had wonderful texture, and was sauced just right. I wish we had ordered two cheese add ons and skipped the caviar course. My only other niggle was that in the taste satin dessert the apples were slightly overdone and did not retain enough of their individual texture. But this was just a niggle. Be prepared to spend $200+ per person unless you are really economizing in which case why bother to come. The staff and the excellent food will make you glad you came.

A bit of a let down

By Terry M |

I visited Petit Crenn on Tuesday evening around 530pm, I had read that they accepted Watkins at the bar so as a single diner I thought why not. What can I say about this place. On the face of it, it should have been exceptional. However that wasn't the case, on arrival I was the only guest and asked if I could eat the full tasting menu at the bar. I was told no, I then asked if I could eat at a table as the bar menu was a let down. Once again I was told no, this was dues to the fact they only had prep for the covers booked!!! I found this hard to believe and equally hard to swallow, I should have left at this point. In fact I stayed and ordered from the bar menu, gougeres, asparagus, herb omelet and chocolate dessert along with a glass of wine. All of the food was ok but none of it sang, the highlight was the dessert. The wine at approx 175ml for 16 dollars was not good value and lacked depth of flavour. I'm sure the full tasting menu would have been great.

Lunch

By Timothy B |

We ate an early lunch here on our last day in San Francisco. It was a Sunday so parking was free but a challenge to find a spot so be prepared. The neighborhood is lovely and has a great kid friendly park around the corner. The restaurant itself is beautiful and inviting. The staff was very friendly and helpful and did a fabulous job describing the menu. Most importantly, the food was delicious and a welcome change to the tourist focused food we had eaten during the previous few days.

Worth the Splurge Once

By Jay M |

My wife and I were celebrating our friend's birthday at Petit Crenn in mid-June. We prepaid $105 for each of the three meals including service, so I expected a flawless meal and impeccable service. If the food or service are bad, what recourse do you have? While not flawless, I was not disappointed with the seven-course meal. Highlights included the Miyagi Oyster. As you would demand, the oysters (two per person) tasted like the sea. The dot of creme fraiche on top and bed of rose gelee amplified the earthy saltiness. Yes, you can say it was umami on a spoon. Manila Clams also hit all the right notes, including the briny firmness you would expect from this crustacean (see photo). Each dish seemed to put you further out to sea, but you wouldn't have minded. My concern about cost also drifted away. No complaints about the Kampachi and McFarland Springs Trout. The dishes were solidly executed, but I would not say that the dishes were revelations. The real genius was the palate cleanser: Strawberry Sorbet (see photo). The essence of the Albion Strawberry washed over me like a tidal wave. I only recovered from its delicious intensity by the lemon verbena that restrained the strawberry bomb. I did not like the Spring Peas. Lost in the Burn Morel and Lavender Mint were torn pea pods built upon an Amaranth Crisp (see photo). It was a torrent of flavors that were as incoherent as a whirlpool. Service was flawless. Even the chef came out to tell me how to preserve lemons, which were used on the Kampachi. Yes, go once.

It Doesn't Get Much Better

By Gail Kennedy |

This is the 2nd time we have dined here, and both have been superb. They are pescatarian, so be prepared for that. We began with the Canapes, which were popovers stuffed with gruyere cheese and an oyster with rhubarb mignonette. Delicious. Next came the cured kampachi with cheery tomatoes, lemon zest, shaved horseradish and olives, together with their brioche. Brilliant. The beluga lentils with mushrooms and fava beans was good, as well, though perhaps a bit lower on the list. The swordfish with zucchini millefeuille and pepper garnish was outstanding, as was the cheese course. We ended with the peach melba with raspberry sorbet and almonds. Worth every bit of its $95 including tip. Corkage is $40; we brought our own Austrian riesling, which paired wonderfully with all the above. Service was superb.

Excellent Cuisine & Wine Flight, Great Value for the Money, Highly Recommended

By rsk1333 |

Seeing Chef Dominique Crenn profiled on Netflix’s Chef’s Table, we tried her more casual restaurant while in SF in September and loved it. Unless you dine w/o reservation at the bar, there is one choice for cuisine: an $87 5-course Tasting Dinner. We added the $65 Wine Pairing (recommended). Re: pricing, tipping is included so, factoring this in, it’s a real value proposition to get this level of cuisine, wines and service in SF, making it difficult to argue against going here. Our menu included Beau Soleil Oyster (delicious), gnocchi a la Parisienne (best gnocchi we’d ever had), market fish (very nice) with roasted new potatoes in a confit onion with Humbolt Fog (killer) and heirloom tomato salad (delicious). Then little gem salad (deceptively simple but perfectly prepared) and corn cake and ice cream for dessert (very nice). Re: wine flight, as wine fans we were thrilled to recognize absolutely none of the wines. Who knew Tokaji made such a wonderful sparkler! Sommelier (sadly, I do not recall her name) was very knowledgable and her service was very personalized. In fact, all the staff were first rate. We will be back!

A Dining Experience Worth Trying

By 155019David_M |

There are two settings. We went to the 8:30 pm. Don't be late as things start right on time. It is a fixed menu. Everyone gets the same thing. The feature was a large fresh stripped bass from Boston. The whole fish was paraded around the room for everyone to see. There were 2 courses before the main event. The food is very fresh with lots of great flavours. There was also a salad and dessert corse so you do not go away hungry. There is a nice wine list or you can do wine pairings. On the whole the service staff are very friendly. Some of the servers seem to be going on rote by the second sitting. The good thing is that all the taxes and gratuity is included in the price. I wish more places would do that. It is fairly California casual. It is seafood and vegetable focused so no meat or foul is on the menu.

The best little find!

By 5forfuntimes |

We had lunch and dinner reservations for every day of our stay in SF! This was by far my favorite! We had a light lunch but it was such a pleasure - everything you'd want in a small cafe. Attentive service, thoughtful menu, wonderful flavors! The mushroom tartine was not what I expected (it was a HUGE slab of bread) and although it was over salted, it was delicious. My husbands tomato salad was perfection and our one bite delights were the perfect start. The decor was so San Francisco, modern, light, white. Spare but not stark. Was a hit!

Great Dinner

By Cincin2100 |

I saw the Netflix's Chef's Table episode featuring Dominque Crenn and decided I had to experience one of her restaurants, at least the one that I could afford. We came for a special occasion to Petit Crenn and it was a wonderful dinner. The restaurant decor is hip and lively but there is a high level of service provided by the wait staff. The prix fixe dinner had 6 courses, all plant and fish based. I liked that with the first course they gave you two canapés each, just in case you really like it. The highlights of my dinner were the Tokyo turnips in a lobster consommé, the grilled Mt. Lassen Trout and the brioche - so good. Looking forward to a good excuse to come back.

Enjoyable Lunch

By ndoshi984 |

Having watched Dominique Crenn on Netflix’s Chef’s Table, and with little time in San Francisco, I decided to go Atelier’s Crenn’s sister restaurant, Petit Crenn. Dining solo, I sat at the bar and observed the chefs cook. I admired their diligent work, and patience while they were answering my questions. The first dish I ordered was the Heirloom Tomato Salad that had granola, which gave it a nice crunch adding texture to the dish. Because I wanted a good reflection of Dominique Crenn’s craft, I asked one of chefs what entree to order. He recommended the gnocchi. The gnocchi was very savory and definitely enough to fill me up. My favorite dish was the Gruyère Gougères. It was three light pastry balls filled with gruyère topped with shallot gel that was just delicious. Next time I visit San Francisco, I will definitely make time to eat more of Dominique’s fine cuisine.

Special

By mojoFCH2020 |

Went for the tasting menu plus the two additional courses and the wine pairing. We were fortunate to be seated at the bar all the way to the left so we got to see the amazingly meticulous preparation of all seven of the extremely high quality delicious items we gladly consumed. Quite a culinary adventure for special occasions!

Great new restaurant from a Michelin Starred Chef

By TheWineBear |

Two formal seatings, 6:00 and 8:30. We were warmly greeted, felt welcome. The wine list is reasonably priced and thoughtfully selected. Corkage is prohibitively excessive ($40.00 per bottle). The wine list includes several international cider selections, following the current hot trend. Decor is mostly white, clean feeling, with the color from the cuisine, patrons and wait-staff, who are also cooks. The food theme is from Chef Crenn's Brittany background, mostly vegetarian with seafood. Both the veggies and seafood are exceptionally fresh, farm or ocean to table. The main course was a trout, expertly deboned at the table. Everything was tasty and well prepared. The price is all-inclusive of food, tax and tip. The only extras are the wines and beverages. Overall, the experience is as exciting as one would expect from a great chef's new restaurant.

Cold and impersonal both the menu and the service

By filostrato57 |

On holiday in San Francisco we decided to try the Petit Crenn, a bistro opened by the chef Crenn. Minimalist decor, perhaps too much but everyone has their own tastes (on the wall, you quote phrases in French without any correlation with the restaurant: architectural choice?). Fixed tasting menu with definitions partly in French and partly in English. Staff from the entrance free of expression, but it is not a duty to be empathetic. Moreover, if when you bring a dish you describe it as the shopping list or the prescription of a drug is not that much interests the customer. Simple dishes, with combinations also pleasant but lacking in personality. The only dish worth mentioning was the final dessert. Raw materials certainly good, but "poor". This is not a place I would say: "I can not wait to come back". Two painful notes. 1) the cost: both for the quantity and for the type of raw materials (trout, asparagus, fennel, dill) there is no correspondence with the cost. In 4 people with a glass of wine and 2 bottles of water we spent $ 450. They tell me that San Francisco is a dear city, but this price is a bit exaggerated. I would like to say to the chef that in Italy Massimo Bottura (3 Michelin stars, always in the first 5 places of S. Pellegrino 50 Best Restaurant, in 2016 he was first) opened a bistro whose 6-course tasting menu costs about 75 dollars (65 Euro ). 2) extremely impersonal staff, on the verge of rudeness. If I say thank you it is education to answer. If I go away and greet you, please respond. If then it is a "installation" of modern art like Westworld TV series the important thing is to say it at the beginning. I'll never comeback !!

Tasty brunch

By USCKaboom |

I've been wanting to try a Crenn establishment for a while. This trip I booked lunch at Petit Crenn. The gougeres were excellent. Warm cheese melts into your mouth. The toasted bread and butter was great though a bit pricey. The chicories were a nice salad. I had the mushroom Tartine which was great, for a main.

Amaaaaazing

By Parisa N |

We had dinner here with the 7 course tasting menu. It was delicious. There was not a single course that our table didn't enjoy. All of the food had so much flavor and really lived up to the hype for us. I am very picky about food and this surpassed my expectations in terms of how delicious it was. I am unclear on other reviewers writing about poor service as our service was excellent. We were seated right away and had very attentive servers. I ordered a glass of wine and they apologized that there was only a little bit of the wine left, so they poured me a complimentary glass of that and then recommended another excellent wine. We chose not to do the wine pairing as we had come from wine tasting in Sonoma earlier that day, however the individual glasses of wine were not as pricey as I would have expected. I would highly recommend coming here. I think it would be best to come here first then Atelier Crenn on a night where you are willing to splurge more.

Fabulous

By Lucile G |

We didn’t have a reservation, so we waited at the door for the 5pm opening of the restaurant to get a seat at the bar. They serve a smaller menu but you get to see the food prepared and plated there. We were very lucky to meet the beautiful and very graceful Chef Dominique Crenn as she was there finalizing the new menu she had just created. She let us take photos and talked to me a bit about Brittany, as my Mom is from there as well. She is down to earth, simple, and if you haven’t seen the episode of the Chef’s table on her, please do. The food was as expected first class, beautifully plated works of art. The restaurant decor is minimalist, warmed with organic materials, the waiters fun and professional and the atmosphere convivial as in a neighborhood restaurant. We had a wonderful dinner and experience and look forward to the next time.

B-day Dinner

By ddavis130 |

Only the tasting menu was an option, every course was excellent, especially the add-on course of lobster fricassi. Yum. Perfect meal, great wine selection too. Note that you could be seated at the bar on metal stools with no backs. Be sure and check beforehand if you don't want this seat so your dinner won't be delayed.

“Chefs Table” inspired me to try and did not disappoint

By Judee |

My friend and I love to watch “Chefs Table” on Netflix and really enjoyed the episode about Chef Dominique Crenn in San Francisco. The show profiled her 3 Michelin-starred restaurant Atelier Crenn in SF, but when I checked out the website I saw Petit Crenn (her second restaurant). This is less expensive and the food and service was excellent. I made a reservation on line and prepaid. You can add on wine, coffee, tea when you arrive and one of our dishes had an option to add caviar. You will pay for your add ons and the tip at the end of your meal. We had a 7 course tasting menu that was seafood forward. I enjoyed every single dish. My friend and I sat at the counter as we wanted to watch the chefs. Keep in mind that It is pretty hot since you are close to the range and dress accordingly. If you have more than two in your party and want to talk to each other I would stick with a table. I will go back for sure. The neighborhood is nice too so it’s fun to walk around when you’re done.

Perfect First Night in SF!

By Margaret G |

Coming in from Chicago, we chose the early 6pm (8pm for us!) seating for the set tasting menu. From first to last of 6 exquisite courses, everything was beautiful and delicious, from the jewel-like first course to the delectable coffee flavored eclairs and tiny sweet bites dropped off with the bill. Oh, and the sourdough bread toasted over an open flame was fantastic! This place is not inexpensive, but it's a great value.

Tasting Menu

By josie_wanderer |

Having watched Chef’s table on Netflix my bestie and I had made it our goal to dine at Dominique Crenn’s restaurant. Petit Crenn has such a relaxed environment perfect for me because let’s face it I have no experience in fine dining. This was a wonderful experience and I very much look forward to returning to try another tasting menu although next time I will splurge and have the wine pairings. Also I will have to make sure and attempt to get an earlier reservation because the tasting menu require a bit of time and with all that delicious food and wine in my belly I was instantly ready for bed. :)

I want to have a bath in that beurre blanc!

By barb.eve |

I had a meal at the bar of Petit Crenn so had a good look at the mastery of the chefs. It was wonderful to see the respect with which they treated the food and unsurprisingly what they produced was heavenly. Highlight was the fluke with the lemon beurre blanc, simply delicious. Highly recommended.

Service is excellent!

By CruisenFamily |

It's Tuesday evening at 5:00 pm and Petit Crenn opens the doors. We sit at the counter in front of the chef who will be preparing our food. We have no reservation. We order what we want - no tasting menu when you sit at the counter. The service people are very accommodating and friendly. We select our food and watch as it is prepared. Each dish arrives and is explained by the chef. We had oysters, gnocchi, fish, and the bread - oh the bread!!! Cute little place. It began to fill up closer to 6:00 but we enjoyed our meal at the counter. Service fee is included and the two of us shared our food for about $62 without drinks (just water).

Stories from the Vineyard in foods

By Jeanne R |

On 10/26/19 I had a lovely dinner and wine pairing at Petit Crenn where I could compare their divine food with equally enjoyable food. I usually don't drink white wine or german wines and had both at this meal. It was unique and delectable. The McFarland trout paired with a quintodecimo greco di tufo from Italy was wonderful. The compressed apple tart and the mosel extra special. There were five other courses and wines but these two stood out for me.

Delicious, fresh and creative

By Cat_en_voyage |

Petit Crenn has the relaxed atmosphere of a neighborood restaurant and the quality of dishes prepared by great chef. The right amount of innovation combined with freshness and friendly service makes it a great place for foodies. The fish was superb. They show it to you before it is cooked and served. We very much like the fact that the sauces were excellent without being too complicated. A great experience. It is easier to get a table during the week.

Hidden gem in Hayes Street ...

By Ana L |

Cannot book the Atelier Crenn on short notice, however this little bistro type is the perfect place for good food and reasonable wine pairing, the $95 tasting menu is great, and very well presented, service is efficient and attentive, you can see the action in the open kitchen almost from all tables, so many lady chefs, I couldn't believe it.

A bit disappointed

By Lyndync |

I came to this restaurant with very high expectations after hearing wonderful things about the chef and watching her documentary on Netflix. However I was extremely disappointed with the service. The food was very good, but not out of this world, with the exception of the chamomile Panna cotta - which was amazing! There where 3 waiters, 2 woman that had unfriendly attitude and 1 guy that said he had been here for 2 weeks only. We were served last most of the time during the whole night; we ordered a bottle of wine and we had to serve ourselves water and wine during the night because none of the waiters came over to fill our glasses. The waiters where very unorganized, everyone was trying to do everything at every table and because of that they missed actually Giving service to every table. We did not get offered more drinks nor coffee. I think the concept of the place is good and believe it has potential but they really need to do something about the service. I did not get a sense of anyone there being happy to be there or do their job.

Delicious food and wine

By Juliet |

My partner took me here for my 30th birthday - we were both so excited to try it as we were travelling from Australia to California as part of my birthday celebrations and had selected this restaurant for my actual birthday dinner. The food and wine were superb! it was some of the best food I've ever had and matched with wine perfectly. We selected the seven course tasting menu with the reserved wine matching and had added the additional caviar dish as well. With the additional caviar dish, reserved matched wines and additional drinks (the canapés do not have matched wines) this did add up to be quite a bit. My only fault with the restaurant is that we found the service to be a little cold at times - professional, knowledgable and attentive - yes, but there were multiple times throughout the night where we felt like we were a bit of an imposition. I'm not sure if that's just how the service is in San Francisco, but having travelled quite a bit over the states, it was a bit surprising. Despite this, I would go again in a heartbeat!

Just flew in for business and found this place whilst wandering. Food is country French and wine is predominantly French with some German and Hungarian. All very well put together. The atmosphere is contemporary and friendly

Wow! Buttery French Food; Michelin-Star Quality.

By Gailyn63 |

We have been to most of the 'great' restaurants in San Francisco, so we have had a lot of great meals, most of which are far more expensive than Petit Crenn. We ate there on a Sunday, having the $85 prix fixe dinner, which includes tax and tip. We can't believe it took us this long, as we had eaten at Luce, her first restaurant, years ago and loved it. This is a Michelin-star quality restaurant for sure. We sat at the bar and were able to watch the chefs prepare the meals all night, each one fresh, and would recommend it. The clam and mussel bouillabaisse, the mushroom gnocchi, the turbot, the roasted cauliflower and the salad with fresh fruit all were inventive and excellent. No meat, but no issues, as all the dishes were superb. As there is one menu, make sure you like what they are offering that night, though they will accommodate food allergies and preferences. Our only complaint is the wine list and corkage. The wine list is a small one, consisting primarily of French whites and reds from the 2013-2015 vintages. Those wanting the wine pairing will fork out another $65 per person. If you bring your own it will cost you $45 in corkage, for sure on the high side. One solution would be to have one wine pairing for a couple. The couple next door did this. Service was quite good. As it is a small restaurant (Bar Jules formerly was here), reservations are a must.

Not sure about the hype

By kleinhanna |

Expected more luxury and food finesse for the hype and price ; slick service and organisation perfect but the food was rather provencale in that there was a lot of bread: flatbread to start; thick slices of soda bread with seafood type bisque , croutons in pumpkin buckwheat pancake etc ; lettuce leaves v large and few slices of various radishes: a lot of seeming cheap ingredients

Being human first

By Omer L |

My wife's birthday was yesterday and we reserved a place for today in what was one of her favorites - Petit Crenn. But things happen, and our 1y/o got sick the night before. At 3 pm he was still with 103.7 and our babysitter (working in his daycare) suggested she won't come not to have other kids affected. Trying to cancel we were refused in a rude way. Not only $190 were taken from us but we were also asked to find a replacement and to let them know if we haven't (so that they can let other ppl come). No, we won't be back. Yes, we do understand the frustration when ppl cancel, but I also wonder what the owners would have felt in our place.

A Wonderful Dinner Experience

By SweetAl |

To arrive at this restaurant, we had to drive around the block a couple of times to find a parking space. We arrived a little early for our dinner reservation, but the staff was more than happy to seat us and begin service. We had a reservation for 2 on the Tasting Menu. There were 7 courses of food we had to share. When dinner was over we were content and full. We started with the softest, creamiest brioche bread I have ever had. The Kusshi Oysters were incredibly fresh and full of flavor. My favorite dish of the night was the Sweet 100 Tomatoes with roe. The combination was excellent. The rest of our meal consisted of Farm Pole Beans, Grilled Summer Peppers, Striped Bass, Brentwood Corn with Spring Onions and a great dessert of Brioche, peaches and crème fraiche. Every dish was well composed and tasted great. The staff was attentive and very friendly. We were amazed at how young, knowledgeable and professional the staff was. A wonderful dinner experience and I can't wait to go back.

Cozy restaurant but average food

By GoPlaces |

I came here for their reputable chef at Atelier Crenn. The restaurant has a nice and cozy atmosphere. We had their full course meals. The first course was impressive and the rest were a average. The food is very salty too. In my opinion, it is not worth the price they charged.

Overpriced, Unsatisfying Experience, Unattentive Server

By Paul R |

Very small space, attractively set up, clean, young vibrant crowd. We were a party of six, reservations at 6:00 PM, table was ready and seats comfortable. The menu consists of seafood, and shell fish, a vegetable, salad and dessert, all inclusive. Wine and beer and some counter items a la cart are extra. Corkage is an ungodly $45. There are 6 or 7 courses, which amounted to plenty of food. Bread was served with a very small amount of butter, when asked for more bread, it came after a rather long while with no more butter. The Trout was presented on a large platter, beautifully, taken away to be de-boned. We were advised to be careful as all bones could/were not removed. It is really an unsatisfying dining experience to be picking many bones out of your mouth and teeth. We had to ask every ten minutes for more water, which did not appear for quite awhile. The water pitcher could have been left on the table. The quality of the food was very good, except for the shortcomings mentioned above.

Surprisingly great - worth every penny!

By TravelGalBT |

I had to force my husband to eat here. He thought the prix fixe was way over-priced, even for California but at the end of our trip he said that this was his favorite meal. Can't say enough about the friendly staff, who worked seamlessly to give us a flawless meal. There is a team aspect used with the entire staff helping out to make sure everyone gets what they need without waiting. The tasting menu for that night was excellent. The seafood was all uniformly fresh, uniquely prepared and tasted delicious. Each night has a different menu, dependent on what is available but is always seafood. They have a huge wine list and our server helped us to choose and excellent one to go with our meal. Delicious food, great service, what more can you ask? We will definitely go back on our next visit to San Francisco.

Interesting menu

By moonstoneBA |

I decided to book the tasting menu, after watching Netflix documentary. My husband and I were visiting San Frnacisco so it was an opportunity to dine at one of her restaurant. We booked it for one night, when we met a friend an hour before the reservation time and wordered if he coud joined us. The restaurant made their best to accommodate him and we could dine the three of us. The table setup was very nice. The ambience is casual, with a European style. We were able to share all the dishes, as no individual meals were served. I found this presentation unique, since I have dined at many restaurants offering tasting menus, and have never experienced this presentation format before. All the dishes and flavors served paired very well: the oysters, the tomatoes, the gnocchi, fresh fish, squash, a kind of green salad presented differently, to end with a tasty dessert. My only comment is that my husband found some bubbles in his wine (and thought that it could be some soap left over). He commented this to the server, who took the glass away, then brought another empty glass, but did not replace the wine taken away. Even though we had ordered a bottle of wine (two in total), I would have expected that the waiter replaced the one taken away. As an example, a similar situation happened to me at another restaurant, where a glass was not clean, and I found it when I tasted the wine, and the waiter opened another bottle of the same wine, to replace the one taken away. Just a comment.

Good for special occasions

By Julien S |

Petit Crenn is a small and cool place, the quality of the food is amazing, it's probably not a place you're going to hit often since it's pricey but if you are into seafood and want to celebrate, this is a nice place to go. We took the tasting menu and most expensive wine pairing option to celebrate my birthday and didn't regret it. Service was very nice and cozy ambiance! Loved it.

Great meal

By Vegemitelover |

We wanted to try one of Dominique Crenn's restaurants and decided to go for Petit Crenn rather than Atelier Crenn for something a bit less formal. We chose the set menu for dinner. The restaurant was busy and full. My husband likes food from Normandy - very buttery and rich. Overall the food was very good - more homely and less pretentious that a more formal restaurant. The halibut was excellent as was the gnocchi and from age blanc dessert. Even the brioche bread with Normandy butter was delicious! The wine list was limited but good. The meal included tips but you could pay more if need be. A very enjoyable restaurant. I don't normally give many 5 ratings but the meal deserves one!

Wonderful

By m-sfca |

I took my friend for his birthday and it was a perfect experience. I liked the prefix menu and we both enjoyed the food and excellent service. I also recommend the lower priced wine parring which was cheaper than almost all of there wine from their wine list. I will be back but make your reservations one month in advance if you want a particular day and time.

Very dissapointing

By rachie60827 |

My sisters and I were looking forward to splurging on a nice meal over Easter weekend and Petit Crenn came highly recommended. Unfortunately, our experience was quite bad for a number of reasons. Time: Our food took more than an hour to arrive after we ordered! The table next to us arrived after us, ordered after us, yet finished their meal before our food even arrived. I asked our waiter 30 minutes in if he could at least bring the oysters, which he replied that they were still "being prepared". At some point, my sister took out a bag of trail mix she had in her purse because we were hungry and the food was taking so long. Service: gratuity is included in the bill, which is an operational practice I support, but this time our service was poor and not deserving of an 18% tip. It took a few times to get the servers attention to refill water or order another drink. I honestly think he forgot to put in our order. I also expected some acknowledgement of the egregious wait, but there was none. Food: If the food were exceptional, then our experience could have been redeemed, but it was just okay. I expect that if you are a restaurant like this and you serve dishes with simple ingredients, that they will be executed to perfection. The trout was tasty, the cauliflower was under seasoned and overall, it was meh, but at that point, we would have devoured anything. We didn't stick around for desert and instead got frozen yogurt next door at Souvla (their olive oil frozen yogurt is delicious!) We felt like we needed a "win" after our sorry and pricey lunch.

Fantastic!

By Christine T |

This is high cusine, in a down-to-earth atmosphere, beautiful though simple interior, lovely to sit in the bar, watch the chefs work on the open fire stow!

Mouthwatering experience

By Swiss-whiskers |

What a fun experience! The concept here is that everybody's having the same thing and that's great if you don't like to agonize over a long menu. It was fish the night we went and we loved how the staff walked through with it before putting it on the vintage grill (which smoked up the restaurant somewhat, but the fish came out delicious). Several courses and beautiful presentation throughout. Enthusiastic and attentive staff and a convivial atmosphere. Sadly, we couldn't linger because the second seating was on its way, so coffee felt a bit rushed. Next time we'd book the later slot.

Sunday Brunch

By DC196 |

Lyft delivered us five minutes before our 1100 reservations and we walked right in to the empty room only to be unceremoniously ejected and made to stand on the street because they weren't yet receiving "guests." Could have let the senior citizens rest quietly at our table, but nooo. At least it wasn't raining. Gave us time to check out the menu of the Suppenkueche next door which looked yummy. Semmelknudel, Palatschinken, Linsensuppe mit Wurst. Now that's a place l'd like to explore, and they had a good crowd. Oh wait, this is about Petit Crenn, which did indeed finally seat us at the stroke of the hour. We were there with our entrepreneurial daughter and her friends from DC and NYC. Gatekeeper hostess suggested we share and we got a variety of brunch items like tartines, gnochi, mussels, omelette roll and practically the whole menu delivered by a variety of handsome servers. Recurring themes were little wild mushrooms and thick toasty crusty bread. Good and quite different from traditional French Bistro dishes. Everybody in our party was happy with what we ordered. Bill for five for many very attractive and tasty plates but no drinks was $190. Read the bill carefully because service is compris (or as the Suppenkueche would say: Trinkgelt ist inbegriffen.) You don't have to leave an additional tip.

Focused menu with yummy food

By Tiny_Bubbles007 |

Very good food executed beautifully! We shared eggs Benedict, crab crepes, mushroom tartine and French toast. I requested an egg be added. You do not get large portions and it’s worth ordering an extra entree. A large French press coffee was perfect for four. Short list of cocktails for brunch. Not a traditional mimosa but rather a grapefruit version. The French toast is sweet and we shared at the end of our meal. Parking: street only. Can be hard to find parking on the Sunday bc of a local church. I’d go back for dinner.

As good as it gets

By DHK44 |

We were lucky to get a 5 PM reservation on a Sunday night. Only a 'tasting menu' was available but that's what we came for. Not a cheap place (omelet with caviar and extra $75) but everything was prepared and served with great style and care. The place is in a typical SF neighborhood with elderly houses competing with hypermodern elements. Now that the Etoile at the Chandon winery has closed, this will be our San Francisco high-octane food spot for future visits.

Very elegant, simple and good

By marrei |

I really enjoyed the food, the atmosphere and the service, a great addition to Hayes Valley, much better than the restaurant that was here before, really worth trying and reasonably priced for San Francisco standards. Worth trying

Very good! (Limited menu options for lunch)

By rafael_azzi |

Great atmosphere and service. This restaurant is a great option if you're looking for a nice place with good food. The only downside is that for lunch the menu didn't have many options: Trouts was the only meat option and since I don't eat it I had to order the tartines and salads which were delicious but I was still hungry in th end. Same for desert - there was only one (delicious) option offered - It is Always good to have the person you're eating with order something else so you can grab a bite! Overall I had a great experience and I will definitely come back!

Neighboorhood gem

Very cute place in Hayes Valley, vibrant atmosphere and good service. Food was excellent and well presented , the list of wine and cider very interesting. Don't miss it!

Do take the wine pairing

By V Travel a lot |

For our last night of vacation we decided to try Petit Crenn as we saw the episode on Netflix and we are foodies. The tasting menu that night was good. The sauce of the swordfish dish was spectacular. But what really made our evening was was the wine pairing. We chose the traveler option a little less expensive but the selection was both illuminating and a complete delight. Algerian, corsican and sicilian wines.. we will look for them. Great evening.

Amazing food

By TravelinHeels |

One of our favorites in the city! We love the menu and the people. Cherie( sherry) is our favorite. The menu changes daily and as for the bar it's on a first come first serve basis. We usually go right at the time they open to make sure we get seats. Otherwise, you can make a reservation and you will be able to order their prix fix menu that is not available at the bar. Some of the high lights on the menu now is sweet 100 tomatoes. It includes lots and lots of tomatoes, roe, cucumber and some edible flowers. We usually get their fish ( either salmon or snapper). You can't go wrong. Their brioche with the most incredible butter is also another amazing item. They also have these little puff pastries filled with cheese ( I can't think of the name right now) and they come in a portion of 4 bites. Delicious! You can't basically go wrong here! Chef Crenn is truly amazing!

Nice food but pricey meal

By Cherility |

My husband, bother in law and I enjoyed a meal here on 5th sept following a recommendation by a colleague of my brother. It's a lovely little spot with a nice atmosphere. The service was great and the food really tasty. The only thing I could fault was the price. In hindsight we should have asked how much things were before ordering. We had the tasting menu and the wine pairings along with a champagne each on arrival, the bill came to just under $600. I don't think the wine was worth the price it must have been (no clear pricing on menus of wine pairings). My recommendation would be stick to the tasting menu (really tasty) and maybe a glass or two of your own choice- save the shock when the bill comes !

Wonderful experience

By cheryl t |

This is a wonderful restaurant. Food is good, plentiful and well served. Not overdone...just tasty and a really nice looking. Service stupendous. They took the fish they were serving and marched it around on a giant platter and showed it to the diners. All the fixed price courses were fabulous and they gave us a lot of extras that were creative. Small but perfect wine list. We had a fabulous cabaret franc. Pricey but worth it.

Absolutely amazing lunch

By Josh Hammann |

My husband and I traveled from Chicago and heard about this restaurant from a friend who is a foodie. We booked a reservation for lunch and can say it was one of the best food experiences we have had in a long time. The restaurant, service, and food were all excellent. The food and flavors were amazing. Highly recommend!

Delicious food, great atmosphere

By voyageouse |

This is one of three places in San Francisco owned by Michelin starred chef Crenn. We had a very enjoyable evening here. The atmosphere is upbeat and unpretentious for a restaurant of this caliber. The tasting menu was excellent, each course well executed and very tasty. Wine pairing was also quite good. Definitely worth a visit!

Perfunctory service

By MaryC12345678 |

Cannot complain about the quality or quantity of food served- it was superb. The team of servers was attentive and hospitable. But somehow they didn't "connect" with our table. Saddened.

Tasting Menu dinner at Petite Crenn

By Ananya A |

I am a big fan of Chef Dominique Crenn. I have been to Atelier Crenn a couple times, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I assumed Petite Crenn would be comparable to Atelier. Wrong assumption and now I know why Petite has "0" michelin stars. The food was mediocre at best. The shining star was the desert. The ambience was fine, service not great. Progressing down the tasting menu, I found a hair in my dish and none of the staff showed like they genuinely cared or addressed it. After a while, the wine director apologized for it and moved on. At the end of the meal, when I went to use the restroom that was broken. All together we spent $600 to have hair in my meal, a broken bathroom and an upset stomach. I really would discourage people from going here and wasting their money! If you are looking for an exclusive experience which tantalizes your taste buds, this was not the place for it.

Overpriced and underwhelming Brunch

By Borl |

I was very much looking forward to visiting Petit Crenn but brunch was nothing special and was poor value for the price. It left me feeling unhappy, though the atmosphere and service was good. I would not go again or recommend it to others. We decided to share a group of dishes, which was as well. I would not have liked to have ordered a Little Gem Lettuce Salad as my sole starter, as it turned out to be 3 leaves for $12. The trout was large and very good. The gougeres were nothing special, and came alone, with no side salads. The wine servings were not generous either. No bread was offered, and service was precharged on the check. I was not looking for large portions and I hate to bang on about the issue, but (apart from the trout) what we were presented with were so small as make us feel we had not received value for money. I don't know if this results from a philosophical or economic issue for Petit Crenn, but other ambitious restaurant/cafes can get it right. I hope Petit Crenn does too in the future.

One of my favorite meals in the city

By Mdoanvu |

I was very excited to try Dominque Crenn's Petit Crenn for a special 30th Birthday. The overall experience, food, and environment was top notch and couldn't be replicated. We had a spot at the chefs counter (which I loved since we got front row view of the chefs in action). Everything about the meal we had was memorable. I am absolutely in love with everything piece that was presented that night and would love another opportunity to go here again!

Very good but expensive

By TA86Portugal |

We liked the food very much but it wasn’t amazing. Service was ok. It was a good experience but not worth the price.

Exceeded my expectations

By LHK70 |

Loved our brunch! The restaurant is so beautiful and inviting! The staff was so friendly and knowledgeable. Loved watching the staff cook our amazing meal! From our starter through dessert it was fantastic! Truly a treat!

Very good dinner

By Amit I |

Family dinner with my family. Very small restaurant and very difficult to reserve table ( good sign). Basically - they give you what they want.....it’s “what in the kitchen “ so they surprise you with small but excellent dishes. The service was perfect. We were 4 of us, and we were served by 2 waitress. It was expensive but very good experience

Disappointed with wine pairing

By rklinec |

The food was nice and some of the courses near perfect. I loved the smokey taste in some of them. The restaurant was a little bit too hectic for us, but it got better before the end of our late dinner. The thing that disappointed us were the wines. Wine pairing overpriced for five samples of the conventional wine sometimes poured in tiny amounts. What disappointed us the most was the lack of natural wines usually available in such restaurants all around the world. Slow food movement and the fast conventional wines don’t go together well. If we didn’t take the wine pairing and found just one natural wine in the wine card this would probably be a five star rating.

Fine tuned and elegant in bistro-like rooms

By Phayao13 |

Sitting at the kitchen bar was more like sitting in a food lab. Quiet and low-key, the female chefs work medotically. No Gordon Ramsey management in sight. The seven-course menu is composed with sublimity and elegance. Waitresses and waitors describe in details whats on the plate, very read and relaxed, also with a place for humor. Not so often you eat a seven-course dinner in US and feel comfortable and at ease after the meal is over. Overall very beautiful presentations.Spring Trout and sauce Vierge was the induvidual dish that I could easily cook myself. Liked the element of service included in the menu price, otherwise always a dilemma for foreign visitors.Still thought wine prices would need to be adjusted downwards.

First Class meal!

By Mary D |

My husband and I just moved to San Francisco this past week. Our first stop was Petit Crenn. As I get older I am less impressed with restaurants or maybe all things in general. I am pleased to report that Petit Crenn was not a let down. Although the service was extremely slow to start, (It took 20 minutes to get our first glass of wine) redemption followed with perfect timing. The Leeks en Vinaigrette with the add on Sturgeon Caviar was sublime. I found myself slowing down and taking small bites to really enjoy. Big deal for me as I love to eat and do it fast!! The Confit Cauliflower course had the best Salt Spring mussels I have ever had. I don't love mussels but the preserved lemon made them incredible. I also loved the Buckwheat Crepe. I didn't add the black truffle as I over did truffles in Italy 10 years ago and they still don't smell good to me. I felt the dish didn't need any help. The crepe was tasty and an interesting way to serve escargot. Our main course was Mt Lassen Trout with roasted beets, spring onion and walnut. The trout was perfectly cooked and paired well with the beets. Lastly we enjoyed the Riz au Lait. Now this is my type of dessert! A creamy rice pudding with just the correct al dente. A few dried Kumquats and voila! YUM! This went extremely well with the Muscat pairing. We talked with our servers and found out that they had recently changed the menu. So I say, Well Done! Next stop Bar Crenn and then the big Finale at Atelier Crenn! And then another round S'il vous plait!

Very attractive Restaurant

By jecaway |

I was disappointed with today's lunch. I chose an omelette which was only ok. At $18 there should have been more on the plate. If you want bread you must order it for $6. My friend's salad looked good. The people at the table next to us ordered about 8 plates and they looked good but I wouldn't have been surprised if the bill came to over $200. The food seems to be over priced and the quantity stingy. I won't go back. But the restaurant is very attractive.

Spectacular, Superb

By AfriqueSoleil |

If you are keen on enjoying a culinary journey, than this is it!! 7 course meal for $85 including tip was very well worth it. And we also split the wine pairing, which was ideal. Food was very fresh, unique, not salty at all and very unique and creative dishes. Service was superb!! I would highly recommend this place and i would visit again. Loved it!

Great Night

By Nicoian |

The food, the wine and service were amazing. However my seat was squeegeeing and my glass was dirty. Nevertheless, despite these few little details, a great night.

Great food, mediocre service

By Keyvan R |

We were part of the 8:30 seating on a Saturday night and despite having reservations we were forced to wait outside for about 15 minutes before being seated. Once we sat down, no one ever brought a wine list, once we ordered drinks, half of them were never delivered, and they spilled water on my wife twice while refilling her glass. Not what I'd expect from a $100 per person restaurant. It's a shame as the food was actually quite tasty, but the automatic gratuity fee is hurting the service and reputation of this otherwise fine establishment.

Fantastic dinner

By Kathy H |

Had a wonderful experience at Petit Crenn last night. The food was delicious and wine pairing amazing. I loved the relaxed, friendly vibe while the attentive service was excellent. I'll definitely return on my next visit to San Francisco

Wonderfully satisfying dinner

By Linda E |

We had a pre-symphony dinner so this was NOT the 5-course, prix fixe event; it was at the counter and a la carte. Every bite was tasty. Ingredients were familiar -- no items you never heard of from a place you never heard of cooked in some technique you never heard of -- but the end results often had a bit of surprise. My only complaint is that I wish the counter stools had backs. I hate backless seating. Meat eaters should be forewarned that the focus is on seafood and vegetables. There were no meat or poultry items on the menu.

Wonderful fine-casual

By T8travels |

Went after seeing it on Chef's Table (Netflix). Was fun to see the Chef having a bite at the bar. Everything was served family style. Excellent service. Prix-fixe menu only. Also did the wine pairing which was well matched and had generous pours. Casual atmosphere. Meal was excellent and well paced. Highly recommend. Reservations are a must.

Delightful Meal

By Tails1 |

We thoroughly enjoyed a delicious meal here at Petite Crenn (Dominique Crenn) We did 'tasting menu' at chefs counter. Was great to watch the chefs in action. Beautiful food accompanied by delicious wine. Great dining experience.

Disappointing

By Ali L |

Our evening started with us being left awkwardly by the door for 4 or 5 minutes. Waiters and waitresses passed us by before a hostess eventually spotted us. She was very apologetic. The flavours were good. Some of our dishes were overcooked (halibut and gnocchi) We were left without dessert for a long time. It eventually came. We paid our bill before we were given our mignardises. I'm not sure if they would have come but we weren't going to wait around to find out. Given how expensive this place is, we expected a lot more. If only we'd checked TripAdvisor first because it looks as though we're not the only ones who had a disappointing experience.

Fish done right...

By David S |

Petit Crenn is Dominique Crenn's neighborhood bistro (she also has a fine dining venue, Atelier Crenn). Very small (but comfortable), open kitchen, service included, multicourse fixed menu, no liquor but a nice range of wines by the glass, two nightly seatings (but there were available seats at the counter), young, congenial, attractive staff. Noise level was acceptable, meaning conversation was possible, thanks very much. Every course was imaginative and delicious. The main event was an amberjack flown up from Cabo that morning. They brought the beast out to show us diners before grilling it. The result was insanely great grilled fish. Reserve a month in advance...

Attention to detail

By Drollighansel |

This was a case of an overall great experience. No one dish stood out, but every delicious dish was carefully prepared and presented.

Overhyped

By Kl C |

Was here for brunch. Food was honestly just average. Ordered buckwheat crepe with crab meat and fried egg. I would have thought the crepe was freshly made. It wasn't. There was a stack of pre-made crepes and they were simply heated up. Food presentation was underwhelming. Quite disappointing. Won't be back.

The petit 'factory'

By Emily-vdb |

We have heard so much about Dominique Crenn. So despite being able to dine only on a Sunday, we had to have a taste of Crenn at the Petit Crenn instead. I am sad to say that the overall experience was a let down. The kitchen was dishing out food base on their speed..not the customers'. The service staff worked like an F1 pit crew - food on table followed by fast mumble on what it is and gone. Perhaps these would have been overlooked if not for the fact that the food is generally unimaginative and not particularly tasty in anyway, and the wine pairing was a disappointment to say the least. All in all, we felt like we were customers being 'processed' in a fast food factory the size of a sardine can, and fed food that's no better than that of an average bistro. I wished I could write a better review. But the soul of what Crenn represents is no where to be found. Sorry.

Absolutely Delightful

By fritznig |

This was a stunning meal. I was a walk-in, alone, and sat at the bar facing the kitchen. I started with poached oysters which were perfect in every way. Then, I had the omelet for which they are well known and deservedly so--I watched as he made it in a small oven pan. He then rolled it and poured a juice in the pan and put it back in the oven. The juice was an herbed unami laden delight. Shortly it was taken from the oven and served on a plate. The flavors were absolutely stunning. The final dish was a perfectly cooked halibut. Amazingly, this was all prepared without the benefit of a grill--the exhaust hood was damaged in a fire and has not yet been repaired. So, all the cooking was either in an oven or over a very small wood hot box. Really amazing. The setting is small and intimate.

underwhelmed

By kimberly p |

I was excited experience this meal, in anticipation of a superbly unique coursed meal, and I was left less then thrilled. There was nothing that stood out, as I sat down, all I could do was long for the warmth and intimacy of the prior restaurant bar Jules. petite crenn is cold and unfamiliar and the music, distracting. Most dishes were over seasoned, either too much salt, sauce, or sugar. perhaps this was a bad day, or the chef was ill , still I would not go back or recommend. in this foodie town.

A little disappointing

By Torbek |

Small restaurant, forced to wait on footpath with a glass of wine as pre-booked table not ready. Fortunately weather was OK. Sat at the bar but it was not particularly interesting. Everyone on a six course set menu so we watched one kitchen staff member prepare about 30 split pea dishes. We took wine pairings. Didn’t seem particularly good value, being six half (or less) glasses for $80. Most dishes were tasty enough, although a couple missed the mark. Serves were borderline too small. Just enough overall, but a hearty eater would be disappointed. Service was OK but a little perfunctory. At over $220 a person, and the Crenn name, I probably expected a little more.

Cute, reasonable, not mind blowing

By FatdogThyme |

Service is solid, space is cute although bar stools are unbearably uncomfortable (personal pet peeve). The food is good, but nothing that really stands out. I would go back if I lived down the street, but there are a lot of hole in the wall little places in the city that are amazing, so maybe not.

Neighborhood Find

By Karen121 |

Went for my first visit to this Restaurant a few nights ago -- what a gem of a place. Small, 2 seatings each evening. A set menu, although they did tweak it for me, as I am allergic to seafood. Each course was presented by one of the chefs - thoughtfully and creatively. The food was delicious and inventive. I had never had a baked celeriac before, baked in salt with creme fraiche, loved the slow cooked egg with burnt bread. And the butter bean casserole with swiss chard. Each dish was better than the previous. Wine list is primarily French, as this is a French country type cuisine. Chef Dominique Crenn is the genius behind this Restaurant. Excellent. Will be back.

Note walk ins not necessary available as advertised

By VickiPottsPoint |

We had one night in SF, and I had emailed from Sydney prior to my arrival to try to book. By return email I was told that the restaurant was fully booked, but walk in spots at the bar were available all evening from 5pm - great! We made it there a little after 5...only to be told that all the walk in spots had been reserved "for journalists"! There was one couple at the bar and otherwise the place was empty. I protested that I had emailed to be told I could walk in, just flown in that day....but to no avail. Be warned, if - like me - you had your heart set on eating here!

Best service ever

By 617Bren |

I love this place, the people, the food... If I lived in SF, I’d be there at least weekly. Service is impeccable- starting with hosts. The entire staff appeared well-trained, experienced, friendly but not overly solicitous, and precise. I had the Eggs Benedict w Smoked Trout and was happily surprised by the freshness of the dish. It came with a green salad with a dressing that was light and just a little citrusy- amazing. I also tried a scone that was heavenly with a spice I still can’t identify. The food is well-thought and truly enjoyable. Petit Crenn is my new favorite brunch spot - can’t wait to go back.

A Lovely Experience - Can’t Wait to Return

By Douglas D |

My wife and I had dinner at the restaurant last night. From the moment we arrived we were warmly greeted and seated after a brief wait. We elected to sit at the counter and were immediately enthralled to watch the attentive and detailed work of the kitchen staff. They would occasionally engage us in conversation ever though their concentration on the perfect food presentation was palpable. The menu is prix fixe and we augmented it with the optional cheese course. We has a bottle of the Favia Sauvignon Blanc which we highly recommend. (It was only a small price markup from retail. ) All the courses were excellent, presented beautifully and came with thorough explanations from the server as each arrived. The restaurant exudes the feel of a classic French bistro but with dishes honed by the obvious talents of the the owner (Ms. Crenn) and the resident sous-chef. We live in the New York area, were visiting friends in SF, and wish we had such a restaurant near us. We would become firm patrons. Highly recommended.

Food and wine pairings really good

By lovefoodinCM |

We ate at the restaurant on a Sunday and choose to have the wine pairings instead of ordering wine off the menu. Every dish, from the canapes to the dessert, was nicely prepared and the wine pairings matched beautifully. The service was really good also. It was a nice, enjoyable dining experience.

Lovely tasting menu

By Bethany S |

From top to bottom Petit Crenn's tasting menu was excellent. The courses very thoughtfully built on one another. The whole menu focuses on seafood and great produce. The flavors were bold but balanced. I can't speak highly enough of this restaurant.

Top Culinary Experience

By DougJ25 |

Petit Crenn offers an experience that rates among the top experiences that I've had. For our prix fixe meal, the highlights included the fruit de Mer and the trout was also excellent. The wine pairing is a must. The service is attentive and intelligent but chill, in the right way. The dining room is spacious and has a good feel and I loved the French phrases on the wall. This is a must visit restaurant for real foodies. Posers, please stay away (there were many the night I dined).

Exquisite

By e2squared |

After years of eating in top rated prix fixe restaurants around the world we have become somewhat cynical about the hype and the inherent preciousness of the food. We were surprised and delighted to discover that neither was true for petit crenn. The food was amazingly simply prepared with phenomenal ingredients and a true love and respect for letting natural flavors and combinations stand for what they are rather than the chefs fantasy. Each course complemented the one preceding, the service was beautifully paced and respectful and responsive to the pace and requests of our table. Also, the price was more than fair for the value received. We couldn't ask for more, and look forward to returning as often as possible.

Excellent meal

By Cathy D |

We were recommended to the Petit Crenn by a young Irish guy we met in New Orleans who had eaten at Atelier Crenn. We booked for the 8.30 Sitting for the 5 course Tasting menu and were delighted we had done so. Each course complimented the next and unlike most of the meals I've had since arriving in the US I didn't feel over faced by the amount of food. Great ambiance and the relative intimacy of the tables meant we had an interesting conversation with our neighbours on the next table. Highly recommended.

Amazing food, average service

By Daneage |

Every dish we tried was breathtaking (best grilled oysters ever), and wine was delicious and generously poured. Sadly the service and kitchen decisions didn't live up to the food quality. Most bizarre thing was that for our 1:30pm booking - they refused to accept an additional order at 2:03pm because "the kitchen closes at 2pm" (no advanced warning was given). We tried a polite request for one last quick order, but this was refused by the chef. In spite of this they did take later orders for a couple of tables that arrived later than us, but for some reason they wouldn't take our order. Free dessert was given in compensation for this strange decision, and I still wouldn't hesitate to recommend Petit Crenn for amazing and reasonably priced food.

Overall very enjoyable

By finallyfree |

During a very enjoyable evening we had some interesting and ok as well ass some outstanding dishes. As always in such dining establishments, after some of hge hype is it difficult to measure up to the expectations. I would deffinitely recommend it for an out of th eordinary dining experience.

Once is more than enough

By Adtravel75 |

There are many words to describe the tasting menu, different, distinct, etc. but tasty does not come to mind. Most of the dishes are dressed up vegetables and rather acidic. The add on dishes, omelet with caviar and cheese plate are disappointing. (Putting caviar on top of an omelet is underwhelming even if the omelet is nicely folded.) The ambiance is SF chic but the service is snotty and that is quite unusual in the City which is generally quite friendly and relaxed.

What a surprise

By John D |

I was invited for dinner by a friend and to meet here at 6:00. A charming small restaurant on Hayes Street. A fixed menu produced course after course of original exciting delicious food. Attentive service. Knowledgeable waitstaff. This proved to be a really fabulous dining experience. 5 stars and they deserve more.

Nose Bleed Wine Prices

By Jeffrey R |

Low scale, bit crowded casual decor place with small size portions of mostly tasty, creative 8 course tasting menu. I’ve been to Brittany many times. Not in the least reminiscent to me of its sea based cuisine. At $105pp, hardly a 750 bottle of wine of the hundreds on the list to be found for less than this same $100 price point. First of all, with this highly “curated” list , which is code for picking only great vintners and their most costly wines, and then multiplied up several times as any restaurant does, if a fine wine is meant to complement fine food , with 8 small varied courses how many would want to buy a bottle to go well with all the many flavors and textures of the 8 dishes, let alone a $100 and up bottle. Maybe one then takes the wine pairing. We found this also excessively priced. A $150 Sancerre as the least expensive of this variety? Please. Cheapest Italian white at or close to this stratosphere? So many good, tasty and very drinkable and enjoyable domestic and foreign wines available at $50 -$75 price point even after restaurant markup of 3 or 4X but not here. Very good service. Lots of information given about each course. Bit overwhelming though. All in all, very disappointing.

absolutely fabulous

By Daniel B |

By far a standout dinner experience in San Francisco. Absolutely amazing food in a friendly space with impeccable service. Dinner served family style, we had a party of 7 all of whom could not stop talking about what a great meal it was. I cannot wait to go back!

Loved the tasting menu format

By msaioli |

It is sort of a pain to reserve here and we were disappointed that no tables for 3 were available. Our party of 2 thoroughly enjoyed the tasting menu. Each course was seasonal, interesting and well prepared and somehow it feels more gracious to be offered a small family style platter rather than have each course plated in the kitchen. I liked that the courses were simple up to dessert which was a little overly constructed for my taste, but delicious. Tables are small and close together. Most of the staff enjoy talking about the food, which us foodie customers of course enjoy. I thought the wine pours were a little skimpy but the wine tasting menu at $65 too big a commitment. All in all, it was a wonderful dining experience.

Pretentious

By ChilternRugby |

On our visit only the tasting menu was available, which promised much but failed to deliver anything of a wow nature Of course portions are tiny, and only take a couple of mouthfuls to consume. The food is good but no more Server gives a detailed description of each course, but it's a bit like someone reading a script. Two choices of wine paired to the food. The wine portions are really small so you might be better off with a bottle

Simply Sublime

By Vance C |

We arrived as walk ins and were warmly greeted at the door and shown to the chefs counter. We were given the choice between the a le carte menu or the chefs tasting menu. After some consideration we decided on the tasting menu. We also did the recommended wine pairings. Boy are we glad we did! The selection was wonderful and the tastes phenomenally good. They carefully explained all of the foods and wines that were paired together. Expect to spend about two hours at least if you do the tasting menu. It’s a very pleasant atmosphere and chill music so the time flies by. It was a great experience that we can’t recommend highly enough!

The highlight of our visit to San Francisco

By natalia64 |

Dominique Crenn is the first woman to get 3 Michelin Stars, well deserved! Her restaurant was our favorite this trip, refined food, excellent atmosphere!

Surprise treat

By Bob S |

With friends, we arrived just at opening for dinner and snagged four seats at the bar. It overlooks the cooks working the kitchen, putting together the appetizers and entrees. There is a separate menu for thie bar and you choose individual selections rather than a price fix. Portion size is small but everything is flavorful and the menu changes daily based on what is purchased and available. We will all be going back!

Interesting SF find

By William B |

This small cozy restaurant packs a wallop with a very interesting no choice menu. Everyone sits down at the same time and is served the same meal specializing in seafood. All of the courses were excellent and interesting and it was a treat not to have to pick and choose. Service was excellent and the room very intimate though tables are very close together if you don't like that kind of thing. We would definitely make a return visit.

Outstanding food and service from a young but accomplished staff

By HentiCat |

Went on Sunday evening to try the tasting menu in Dominique Crenn's less formal location and we were not disappointed. The menu is fish biased and all the better for it, lighter and fewer courses than the Atelier it made for an amazing couple of hours. We sat at the Chef's counter which allowed us to see the young but talented kitchen staff turn out some outstanding dishes. The wild mushroom tart, hidden completely under shaved truffle was outstanding as was the halibut with chard and the lobster fricassee. All the staff were attentive and pleasant and it was a perfect way to enjoy a cold rainy night. Totally recommended

Disappointed...and wet

By GrantM |

My wife saw Chef Crenn's episode on Chef's Table and was smitten. We were going to be in SF for a few days so I booked reservations for us at both Atelier Crenn (which was awesome) and then Petit Crenn for the following night. We used Resy to make the reservations (think less efficient, snooty, hipster version of Open Table) The day before we were to dine at PC we received two texts and a request to confirm our reservations. OK. The day of we get two more texts reminding of our reservations and asking us to show up early as parking can be limited. Annoying...but wait. So we are going in our Uber to the diner and having difficulty seeing it, but after being at Atelier Crenn the night before I thought not making the entrance noticeable was part of her schtick. We get out into the cold February drizzle and go to the address and see that the reason it isn't visible is because all the lights are off. WHATT?!? Little paper sign taped to door saying "restaurant closed secondary to kitchen fire" So here I am standing in the cold rain at a closed restaurant on a Friday night in SF after getting NO notification and receiving no less than 4 messages in the last 36 hours actually confirming my reservation. I call Petit Crenn multiple times and no answer. (duh, they're closed) I call back the number that had kept texting me to be there on time and it is the Resy number and they are not nice or facilitating in any manner. Inform me that those are automated texts and they can't do anything to help. Finally call Atelier Crenn and they are nice and apologetic and say they will tell their manager and he will get back with us. Mind you, this is all occurring while I'm huddled under the small awning of the closed restaurant in the rain while my wife is trying to get another ride to someplace that is open and has seating at 8pm on a Friday night. In the end, nobody ever got back in touch with us. Not so much as "well, too bad for you" Disappointing given what a terrific experience we had at Atelier Crenn

Overpriced and disappointing

By AOLucas |

We were really excited to return as we loved our previous visit. A few months back we had the tasting menu with the wine pairing. Because we had enjoyed, we decided to add chef’s recommendation to tasting menu and wine pairing. How disappointing!!!! The meal started out nicely with a delicious beet salad but it went down hill from there with us having the worst dessert ever. Everything went down hill from the food to the service. It makes me sick to have spent $500 and I’ll never return.

Poor, impersonal service

By olimaspecto |

Finally got to try this place over the weekend and while the food was very good (even if the portions are a bit small, they are satisfying), the service was quite poor. Some lowlights: - After being seated, no one came over to our table for nearly 15 minutes except to offer water immediately when we arrived. No greeting no offer of additional beverage or welcome. I had to actually ask one of the wait staff if we could order a drink before our pre-arranged beverage pairing began. When someone did finally come over, there was no apology or recognition that it taken so long. I wasn't expecting anything crazy, but a simple "oops, we forgot about you" would have been appreciated. - Throughout the meal, I felt like we were being served by a bunch of emotionless robots - including one woman who had a major attitude problem. The overall vibe of the evening felt incredibly impersonal and it almost seemed like it was an imposition for us to be there - bizarre and off-putting at a reasonably expensive restaurant. In general, the detached, lackluster service really took away from the evening, and I'd advise others to try elsewhere.

Great Experience

By cja2k1 |

I've been a fan of Chef Crenn for awhile, from her appearances on various TV shows to meeting her in person, so I was confident that my first-ever dining experience at one of her restaurants was going to be terrific -- and it was. Even prior to the dinner, her staff was great about communicating with me regarding food allergies, special occasions, and timing concerns. Once we got there, we got great seats and some complimentary bubbly to help celebrate our anniversary. It just got better from there: knowledgeable servers, delicious and creative food, and a simple and beautiful ambiance. THIS is the new definition of fine, French dining!

We attended the brunch on Sunday. With no reservation; we showed up at 11 right at opening and had to problem being seated. This pescatarian friendly spot is easy on the eyes, easy on the wallet and fresh on the pallet. The scones you can order with your meal or to go. We chose to get three to go after our meal and eat them in front of the painted ladies. We were able to took a reso for dinner with a feel days notice , but decided to eat somewhere else as we had already booked her main restaurant

Un Magnifique Repas !

By Brian W |

When planning vacations, food destinations are always a high priority and "Petit Crenn" has been in our "sights" for quite some time and knowing it's popularity we were sure to make a reservation months in advance. Offering only a "tasting menu", is a wonderful way to sample seasonal ingredients and their interpretation by the "chef de cuisine". We also opted for the "supplemental" wine pairing sampling both local and imported wines. An absolutely fabulous meal for this long awaited destination !

Sweet Place

By Elnora C |

Went here for lunch on a rainy Sunday with friend. They have a compact menu so it may be a little harder to find something you like. We had the Gougeres (OMG - tiny, but explosively good!), Petit Crenn Omelette (THIN even layers of delicate egg, with some wonderful herbs - no heavy cheesy taste), Little Gem Salad (small as people have said), and the Grilled Squash with Brown Butter Crouton (outstanding!). The portions ARE on the small side and the prices are not low. It's a nice intimate place with very attentive staff to eat at when you want a modest size meal.

Raise your hand if you're here because of Netflix. ;)

By kate1328 |

Altier Crenn's slightly less pricey sister. Delicious food, awesome service- service fee is included. Pre set menu. You can check in the week or two before you go. The starter puffs and the gnocchi were stand outs for us. The salmon, potatoes and cauliflower were good- but more something I could have cooked at home. We want to come back for brunch. :) Super cute inside!

Fantastic place!

By Natalia K |

I took my husband to celebrate his birthday and we both enjoyed it so much! We had the set menu with the pairing and it was so worth it! Though if you're driving afterwards, better not have the pairing as it is plenty of wine you'll have. Each dish had a different surprise regarding its taste, even the initial bread with its butter tasted special. As the menu changes, we would love to go back and try something new! The service was also really good!

Best to go with several other people and share plates

By Marjorie Y |

The food is well prepared, the service excellent and the atmosphere is bright and minimal. In hindsight, we should have ordered planning to share our food items. My husband had the gnocchi and I the omelet. Both were delicious but quite filling. Additionally we ordered the grilled bread. If we had ordered only one of items plus a salad and the bread, that would have been plenty. It just felt that we needed some sort of salad or vegetable to balance out the gnocchi and omelet. The menu itself is very, very limited. Even though the price includes the gratuity, it still felt a bit pricey.

Romantic Dining with Outstanding Food & Staff

By Jim M |

Beautiful restaurant in the hip Hayes Valley area that's worth the wait for a reservation or going early. Every course in carefully prepared and presented with options for additional courses like caviar. The Bread is to die for. The staff is welcoming and shares their enthusiasm with everyone in attendance. Excellent wines compliment the meal.

Interesting Tasting Menu

By eva10014 |

Dinner for 3—$380 (3 Tasting menus, 2 glasses of wine and a cheese supplement) This was my third visit to Petit Crenn. The menu is interesting and even the carnivore in our group, here for the first time, didn’t complain. However, I wasn’t as enthusiastic as I had been before. It’s definitely still one of SF’s top restaurants but our dinner at Octavia the next evening (also a female chef and $30 cheaper) was more exciting.

Very Comfortable Surroundings and Good Food

By River55land |

I had an opera at 7:30 pm and needed to eat somewhat early. Petit Creen is on Hayes Street and a few blocks from the War Memorial Opera House. It is open Tuesday through Sunday at 5 pm for dinner and you don't need reservations if you wish to sit at the counter for Chef's selections (limited from menu). If you wish the full menu, you will need reservations. It's also open for lunch from 11am-2pm. The counter is fine and you get a bird's eye view of your dish being prepared. There is very limited outside seating (mostly used for waiting on a table inside). The staff are friendly and very helpful in describing what is on the menu. We arrived before 5 pm and the staff were meeting outside on the sidewalk. This is mostly a seafood place. The prices are a little expensive but not out of line for this type of establishment in San Francisco. No one particular chef's selection stood out but I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Delicious experience - one of my favorite meals!

By sfillipow |

Our visit was my wife's birthday celebration. I wasn't all that excited about the menu on the website, but we wanted to try this highly rated restaurant in charming San Francisco neighborhood. The actual fixed price menu we found last night was quite different from the website (and much better). The food was not overly complex or fussy, just extremely well done. I also liked the style of food, which was not heavy with creme. In addition to a sampling of puffed pastry and delicious bread, our meal included appetizer, first course, main course (fish, vege and beans), salad and dessert. You can also eat a la carte at the bar w/o reservation. The highlight was a fabulous huge line caught tile fish which they grilled and paraded around the dining room - it was perfectly prepared. If you are a larger group there is one table that could seat a family of 6, another table or two that can seat four, and the other tables and for two (plus the bar). I'm a proponent of special family meals...and I would come here! We ended the evening walking home to finish a perfect evening!

Brunch it

By Matteo A |

I've been there for a brunch and I can't regret my choice. The food quality was special and my cocktail Cou Cou, just memorable. As regarding the menu, for brunch, I find it a bit simple and uncomfortable for the prices. My opinion is: if I go to a place under the name of a major Chef, I'm not supposed to find 5 selections of dishes, close to be basic and still expensive. Very likely the dinner should be more interesting but critics aside, I RECOMMEND THIS PLACE!

Slow start but ended with fab brunch!

By Cocosmom10018 |

My friend and I were excited about checking out brunch and we were kept waiting nearly an hour after we sat down and ordered before our meal arrived. The hostess did apologise and extended us complimentary champagne. The food did not disappoint and we only expected absolute perfection from Dominique Crenn. I would have given 5 stars but as mentioned in title - slow service. Ps restaurant was not overly busy so I can only assume they short staffed.

PETIT CRENN not small in price

By HBARRY740 |

My sister in law and brother (both "foodies") asked if I wanted to go to ATELIER CRENN, featuring the recent James Beard winner chef/owner . At 300/person , I passed but did agree to go to PETIT CRENN at "only" 90/per. (Was hoping for TRES PETIT CRENN, but alas, does not yet exist.) Atmosphere is nothing special. Service competent and knowledgeable.. The food was fine but not outstanding or particularly memorable. At the above price, I felt the value was generally suboptimal.

overrated, over-priced, mediocre-to-terrible "fancy" restaurant in SF

By Ellowyn |

I've discovered yet another overrated, over-priced, mediocre-to-terrible "fancy" restaurant in SF! Beware - this place is nothing like Atelier Crenn (nowhere near Atelier's price range either, haha!). Prix-fixe menu. Started off with raw oysters, two per person, tasted pretty good. Next came a pot of mussels. The mussels did not taste fresh (not-fresh mussels usually have a slight stink to them, and these mussels had that stink), and the garlic bread was burnt along the edges. There was a dish with a full fish (head and bones included) that was difficult to eat and tasted okay. The brussel sprouts on the stock with the sun-chokes dip tasted pretty decent. The salad was bland, the cheese that came with the salad was pretty nasty (don't eat the rind). The dessert, which was a traditional pancake sorta thing, tasted awful and bland. There was too much food, in my opinion, an attempt to make up for the poor quality and bad taste. Ambiance is a typical, trendy, chic, French bistro style. Service was nice. The seats (bench along the wall) is hard and uncomfortable (pretty much sitting on concrete). Way over-priced ($79 per person) for mediocre food. Never again. I would not recommend this restaurant. Go to Clementine on Clement if you want good French food (with affordable prices if you do the early-bird special).
