Celebrating at Picanha

By topcat011 |

We visited the northeast location. Made a reservation a week ahead since we were 11 people Made it for 3pm. Celebrated a birthday for a granddaughter. Arrived the place was busy. Waited mere minutes while they made our table. Although very busy the place emptied before we were done The gauchos were very attentive to our party. No one was missing out on anything If someone wanted it was asked and promptly brought to the table. Everything was good. Some were very salty from others so if on a low sodium diet please ask Drinks were replaced without asking. I was surprised that since we were such a larger party that we were not automatically charged a tip It was a very nice time

Excellent Brazilian Steakhouse in NE Phila

By LosCisnes737 |

My wife and I went here to celebrate our anniversary. My brother-in-law has been here many times before and highly recommended the place. The buffet selection was very good with a fine combination of both hot and cold selections. Note that not all items listed on their website are available at all times. The grilled meat selections were excellent. Diners could select cuts of meat ranging from rare to well-done in preparation. The grilled Brazilian chorizo was excellent, very much like Chilean longaniza. I only wish I had taken more than one piece when the server came by as it wasn't offered on follow-up visits from him. There's no advertised time limit on how long diners can stay, but after roughly 90 minutes our waitress came by and removed our buffet pass saying that there would be no more meats brought to our table. Note that the price per person of $24.99 is higher than that shown on various menu websites. Speaking of websites, unless you're using ultra-high speed cable or FIOS, Picanha's page takes a long, long time to load. After ordering two buffets, a couple of cans of soda, coffee and a couple of deserts the entire tab including tip came to $84 for two people.

One of my favorite restaurants in Philly

By holliegoeslightly |

I have been to the restaurant many times, have brought many people there, and not one person has ever said one negative thing about this place. We all love it. I've even brought one of my Brazilian friends (from Brazilia) and he said the food was authentic, like a local place you would go in Brazil...not some hyped up place like the other big names in Philly that cost an arm and a leg and your first born to eat there. One of the reviews (a few down) does not make sense to me because she said something about the waiters giving you a check. They don't give you a check there...when you pay, you go to the cashier and tell them what you had or what your number was, so I don't think they've reviewed the correct place. When I go there, I pay by the pound (one of two options) because I could never eat $20 (the other option for all that you can eat and tableside service) worth of food. You'd have to be a glutton, weightlifter, or teenaged boy to eat that much there. My 20 year old son (who can eat) could barely eat more than 2 platefuls of food. Anyway, as far as the flavor of the food -- it is always fresh and delicious. The steaks melt in your mouth and you will never have such a good steak dinner for the small price that you pay here. They have chicken wrapped in bacon, too, but since I don't eat steak very often, I always opt for the steak. The man at the counter is not always Mr. Smily, but he is serious about what he does and he will give you exactly what you ask for...if you want more than he has sliced off for you, you just ask for another piece, it's that simple. They don't always have exactly the same things on the buffet bar, but what they have is always delicious and authentic. The ambiance is almost non-existent, but it's like I said earlier, it's like a local place that you'd pop in for lunch or dinner, it is not extravagant. If you're looking for all the hoop-la, gauchos serving you, and some sort of extravaganza -- don't go here. This is more a place to have a lovely and very tasty lunch or dinner instead of taking out a mortgage to eat.

The New Location - A+ Food & Service

By Let’s Go |

Newly opened location on Locust St. Amazing food and customer service. They quickly accommodated a special dietary need. Our server Ricardo “Ricky” was attentive and personable. ♿️ Entrance was not accessible. Very friendly to my tween son making it an wonderful vacation dinner. Quality, fun, and chić casual.

The meat place

By silvergoldberry |

We like eating here because you can get in and out pretty quick. I have no idea what most of the stuff on the buffet is, but it's all good. I love the skirt steak. We usually buy by the pound instead of the all you can eat, because it just makes more sense for us, we's have to eat over two pounds of food to make it worth it. Nice friendly staff, you sometimes have to chase them down to bring your drinks, but we like the meat here.

Simply Amazing

By Peri A |

This place provides the best selection of meats for a fraction of the price of other Brazilian style grills. The staff is very professional and provides superior service. I can't wait to go back again.

I went there to celebrate my mom’s birthday and had an amazing experience! The food was delicious and a great deal. Our waiter William, was super friendly and took care of us with a smile the whole time. I’ll definitely be back!

Great value, very enjoyable time

By rayh531308 |

On our visit to Picanha we weren't sure to what to expect. We were pleased to find free on street parking, a nice clean restuarant, reasonable prices and very good tasting food. The BYOB feature was nice and there was no corking free. I do suggest your BYOB because soda is $2 / can. The price was exceptional and was 1/2 to 2/3 what we would pay at a fancier upscale restuarant. We did find more authentic types of food on the buffet and it all was good. The service was above average and we were pleased with our experience we will be going back many times. We went around 6:30 PM and were seated immediately, it did seem to get busy around 7 to 7:30. The value received at this restuarant is exceptional. A real common mans, affordable, Brazillian Steakhouse.

Best food in the North East - Reasonable prices - Extremely clean and nice restauraunt. We never miss an opportunity for at least one visit when in Philadelphia. Picanha has never disappointed us in five-years of visits. Nice folks and great food!!!

Great Meal

By Travel Our Style Simon and Catrina |

Picanha Brazilian Steakhouse our first visit to one of these types of all you can eat restaurant what was impressive how the manger was willing to show us the buffet and how the steak system worked. The food was excellent and continuations with the red and green card working brilliantly, after a couple of visits to our table the waiter’s new what type of cooked condition we required. There is a good selection of wines and beers. The cost was reasonable for the quality and amount.

Gave it a try

By Eleanor F |

I had purchased a coupon from Restaurant.com. I had never been here before. My husband was skeptical as he prefers to go to Restaurants that he is familiar with. We were both very pleasantly surprised. The meal is buffet style. You can choose either full buffet for $24.99 or per pound charge of $7.99 per pound. The food is very fresh and deliciously prepared! The meat is brought & sliced at your table fresh (when you choose the all you can eat). All dishes are Brazilian. It is well worth a visit. If not familiar with Philadelphia area GPS will get you there. A very relaxed atmosphere.

The meat just keeps on coming

By Daniel S |

While not as fancy or upscale as Chima or Fogo de Chao, Picanha does offer something the two higher end restaurants don't and that's meat cooked over a charcoal flame. This is a neighborhood Brazilian Grill and feels like it. The food is tasty and the service is very good (and friendly). It's also about half the price to eat there than at Fogo or Chima.

Affordable good Brazilian food

By sararefaeli |

We went few times with friends to eat at the Picanha Brazilian Grill in NE Philly. Its a casual restaurant. The food is excellent, everything is made from scratch. We went to dinner and choose the option all you can eat. Here, the picanha is sliced from large skewers right in front of you, along with an assortment of other meats such as pork sausage, marinated chicken and short ribs. In addition to roasted meats, you can also try over 20 dishes from the buffet, a selection of salads from the salad bar and homemade desserts including rice pudding, Brazilian chocolate pave, truffles and more. Its a BYOB and will be a good fit with some of the meats. Sometimes you can find a good coupon in Grupon, so a dinner for 2 can end up around $40. The owners are very nice people and its a pleasant place to pass a nice evening.

Great food, good atmosphere

By Powerthirst |

BYOB restaurant that does the Brazilian steakhouse very well. The food was delicious and they were generous in their visits to the table. Everything on the salad bar was fresh. Service was excellent and everyone was polite. Neighborhood is a little sketchy and parking is on-street.

Good food and plenty of it!

By Ellen R |

We actually visited the Picanha on Locust Street, but I believe they have pretty much the same menu. The salad/hot bar is amazing, and a meal in itself! So much more than salad, with some entree type dishes and a soup available for your choice. Following that, a variety of meats are brought out to your table and you may decide what you would like and the rarity of the meat. All delicious. The wait staff is also very pleasant and helpful.

Not a good experience here

By John S |

Had a group of 5 of us, and because I like the Brazilian Rodizio cooking, I wanted to try this place since it had some very good reviews. The issue we had is that we had 2 members of our group who were not interested in the Rodizio at all (one is a vegetarian, the other just not a big meat eater), so we wanted to accommodate them by just getting the buffet for them. Explained to our server that we wanted to get the buffet & rodizio for 3 of us, but only the buffet (no rodizio) for 2 of our group. Our server told us that the buffet & rodizio are all combined, and it was $29.99/person. We kept trying to explain that 2 members of our group would not have any of the Rodizio, but our server could not offer anything other than the full buffet & rodizio at $29.99/person. After about 10 minutes of trying to figure out a solution (other than paying $29.99/person for everyone, even those who would not have the rodizio), we ended up walking out and going to another Brazilian restaruant nearby (Taste of Brazil), where we could get the just the buffet, or the buffet w/ the rodizio. And it turns out that we paid $20/person at the Taste of Brazil for those who wanted the rodizio. After this experience at Picanha, I'm not a fan, and I would not recommend this place.

Delicious

The restaurant was a bit pricey, but the food was great. The also have wonderful selection of fresh juices and excellent desserts.

Best Brasilian Restaurant

By Jaderey |

The closest thing you'll taste of authentic Brasilian Food! This is the best Brasilian steakhouse I have been to this far aside from Majorica in Rio de Janiero! My family have been coming here for years and for me it'll be 10 years now. Food is always consistent and never had a bad meal! I'm glad that they are expanding And renovating! If you want quality for reasonable pricing this is the place to be! Staff is very attentive and very welcoming! Love supporting the small businesses. If you bring cacaha they will make caprinihas for you! Bring limes in case they run out! You can choose pay per lb or have them serve you as they have done in the chain restaurants.

'Weigh' Overpriced

By hoholmes |

Partner and I went for lunch. Variety of sides available via buffet style. But the main reason for lunching here was the meat. Have to say the bacon-wrapped chicken was delicious. The garlic steak was rather blah, and the bricket was fatty. Almost forget that all food is singly priced per pound, so being a fan of mashed pototoes was rather pricy. Have to say that $40 plus tip for lunch for two was a bit much, especially for self -serve. Recommend the chicken, not the steak or beef, and stay away from expensive sides. Must mention that service was very good.

Delightfully filling

By GLADSTONE W |

On a whim we decided to try this restaurant and was not disappointed. The food is plentiful, tasty and the staff is very friendly. This is definitely one not to judge by the exterior. Will be sure to return when in Philadelphia again.

Pleasant surprise

By Ivan N |

We rarely go out to eat, as we enjoy cooking ourselves. Nevertheless, the decision to try out Picanha in Philly was a good one. At the end we were surprised by the quality of true Brazilian cuisine and friendliness of staff, even though the place itself inside and outside does not look too fancy. If it weren't for Groupon, we would have most likely not tried it. Without doubt, we'll come back with friends!

Don't judge a book by its cover

By Ukienomad |

This is a very casual, simple place with little or no decor but the food was very good. Everything looked fresh and tasted good. The Buffett variety is huge so if you are a vegetarian, they have enough for you to eat as well. At the end of the Buffett you can get them to cut you some chicken, beef, pork, lamb marinated in the Brazilian way. We paid by weight as we are not huge eaters and can't eat all that. I can't even begin to say how many items there were but there were A LOT. It's very reasonable too. I usually do not order desserts out as I am usually disappointed but those desserts are "killer" desserts. We ordered three and they were all exquisite. You can't go wrong if you order any one of them and take a few pieces to take home. The service was very good. Oh, and they have drinks, that they make on the premises like mango (which is a bit thick but I added water to it), pineapple and a passion fruit drink that was the best. The passion fruit was lighter the other two and I highly recommend this one. A very authentic type place for a Brazilian grill. Again, you have to overlook the decor and just go for the food. There is also a grocery next door to that that sells Brazilian products. If you need a flan pan, you can get one there. Many to choose from.

Very good Brazilian

By SouthPhillyPT |

Affordable Brazilian Buffet. Very good service and selection. Don't expect this place to be swanky like Fogo de Chao or Chima but this is still worth it. Will definitely come back.

Authentic

By SuzanneGarber |

We lived in Brazil for a while and this is the real deal of the type of churrascaria you'd find outside the big cities. The decor is not terribly appealing and the presentation of the salad bar is not overly attractive but the food is authentic, as is the hospitality and service. For real Brazilian dishes, go for the couve (kale) and farofa (toasted manioc) as well as plantains and rice & beans. Ask for the 'fraldinha" cut of meat when the gauchos pass by your table--you won't be disappointed!

great steaks and value. Going back soon.

By Dt0wn_traveler |

Visited Jan. 22, 2010 (my first time) with 2 returning guests. The atmosphere is family-oriented and very inviting, not sterile. Salad bar was very respectable with several tropical selections, then the meats start arriving until you can't hold any more. Lesser cuts of meat arrive first, followed by boatloads of flank, sausage, sirloin, roast beef. Some melted in our mouths. Hint: Buy a bottle of Brazilian Cachaca rum plus a bag of limes, bring to the restaurant so they can make a pitcher of Caipirinha at no charge. I just can't wait til my son gets home from college to have an excuse to celebrate again.

Better than Rio

By cjg1950 |

Although this restaurant is more of less in my area and has been open for some time, I just visited it with family. We took a bottle of cachacha we bought in Rio some years ago and has the staff make a pitcher of capirainas. They brought back cocktail glasses with delicious ones. I knew it was going to be a good night. We sampled the ample salad bar, which had many delights, but saved lots of room for the grilled meats, which were superb, perfectly seasoned. We also saved room for dessert, and the options were many. Dessert was great too. My only other experience with this kind of dinner was in Rio, where I thought the meats were overly salted. I had been reluctant to go to this restaurant because I was afraid the same would be true. It wasn't, and we will be back.

Dinner for two using Groupon

By Shawn D |

We used the Groupon for two dinners. This included two meals, two desserts, and two drinks (non refillable). Drinks are canned. The price was around $60 for two. The seating is open and upon entering you can view everyone in the location. The staff was very attentive almost to a fault. Five minutes could not go by without someone asking was everything ok or someone bringing food to the table. The food was flavorful and no complaints. My rating is based upon the fact that I have eaten at quite a few Brazilian grills and used those experiences to compare. The location of the restaurant is not the best and the decorum needs lots of work but the food and service is worth a return trip.

A good alternative

By OJM653 |

A good alternative to the "others" churrasquerias. Down to earth, cheap but with good quality of meat cuts and salads. Buffet gets filled on a consistent basis and if you are not that hungry they offer "by the pound" Most definitely will recommend and will return.

If you like down to earth ambiance ... great food ...

By busybirdie |

We have been coming here with friends on many occasions. The food is good and the atmosphere is down to earth. Bring your own cachaça and limes, and they will whip up your caipirinha. You have to options, one is all you can eat (with the cook bringing out the meat to the table) or you can eat by weight. Either way. They have fresh fruit drinks, as well as an excellent array of dessert.

Pretty good, and decently priced.

Delicious

By Tati K |

I have been to other Brazilian restaurants (don't want to mention names) that are known as the best. But picanhas is much better. Trust me. Not comparing with back home :/ But out of the Brazilian steakhouses here in Pa I have been Picanhas is one of the tops I love.

Not a real Brazillian Steak House

By stargir1e333 |

I was very dissappointed in my experience. I came for my birthday thinking I would have a great meal. The food was ok. Good but nothing special. But the thing that really upset me was that I paid for a buffet and got ignored and no meat was brought to us towards the end of our time there so we just decided to leave. My husband was not even full when we left and this type of Brazillian restaurant is the kind of place you should leave having to unbutton your pants from how full you are. To make matters worse, I had my Brazillian friend with me. She said she was embarrassed how they misrepresented what these types of restaurants are supposed to be like. She was angry and the bad service and lack of food offered. To make matters even worse, we were given our check after the guy only came around 4 times with the meat and gave measly portions. In addition, we were primarily offered pork and chicken despite the fact that the majority of the meat at these types of restaurants is supposed to be beef (my husband doesn't eat pork so he ate even less than my friend and I). I would never go back again and do not recommend it to others.

Six friends, lots of wine, great dinner

By AndyRinPA |

I was looking looking for a place to go with a group of friends to introduce them to some great wines and somebody suggested Picanha. I had not been in 8-10 years but, figured we'd give it another try. They had expanded and refurbished since my last visit. Bright and clean, we had a nice big table and got situated. We let them know that we were in no hurry and planned to stay a while, they were more than accommodating. Salads were delicious with starter whites with a wide variety to choose from. Meats came out quickly but, we made clear our intention to go slowly (we had a lot of wines to go through). Desserts were also fabulous including flan and dulce de leche. We'll be back soon.

Picanha Brazilian Grill

By Roseana W |

I was born in Brazil and love the 'rodizio' style of cooking, i.e. you basically pay a pris-fix and the servers keep bringing barbacued cuts to your table until you say 'enough', by showing a marker with the 'stop' on it. At the restaurant, there is a huge salad/side dish bar and lots of desserts to pick from. I have been going to Picanha ever since it opened and have seen it expand to accommodate larger crowds. The food is excellent, the service is friendly without being stuffy and the live Brazilian music by the Philadelphia-based group Minas is wonderful. I know the owners of the restaurant and the musicians well. It is a place that I am proud of and one that I take my friends to again and again. Great value and great food and an easy way to learn about Brazilian cuisine. Note - even though this is a steak house, I consider myself a pescatorian and don't normally eat meats. However, they also have a diversified choice of vegetarian and seafood dishes that will please all tastes. A Must Go!

OK

By Khadija T |

This is a convinient location for a Brazilian grill if you live in the northeast, but the food is not that great, it's just ok. There is a wide selection of sides you can choose from and the guy comes and carves different kinds of meats tableside. We didn't like all the kinds of meats, some of the meat was not cooked well. It's cheap compared to the other Brazilian grills in the city, but you are trading quality for the price that's for sure.

Picanha Brazilian Steakhouse worked great for our group of 25 friends!

By Charming_Karl |

On Saturday, my friends from the NY Grown & Sexy Cigar Group (look for us on Facebook) took a bus trip to NE Philadelphia to Holt's Cigars. After smoking and enjoying each other's company for a few hours, we were ready to devour some good Brazilian buffet at Picanha's. And it worked out pretty well - the salad bar had several things that I enjoyed, and when they skewers of meat came around, we were excited. However, I will admit we didn't get very far - I think we had 6 different varieties of meat, and then we were done! The best was filet mignon wrapped in bacon - wow, so much flavor, and so moist! The lamb and skirt steak were also quite good. It is not easy to keep everyone in a group of 25 happy, but Picanha did the job!

I went to this place back in June! I love...

I went to this place back in June! I love it! The food was good, people were nice and can't complaint! The waiters were extremely hot! I love it! Actually going back on Saturday with a friend!

Convenient!!!

This Place Is Nice If You Don't Want To Drive Downtown For The Other Brazilian Steakhouses. Plus, It's A Lot Cheaper!!!!

Lots of choices

By Sandy S |

Visited here for a rehearsal dinner, so cannot comment on pricing. On the outside this place doesn't scream- "hey! eat here!" but everything on the large buffet was pretty tasty followed by servers slicing several meats/ chicken onto your plate. We found this to be hit or miss- some fatty, some overcooked and some was really, really rare. The meats are the hallmark of a Brazilian grill- and it was sort of disappointing. All in all, it was a nice evening.

Shhh.....Top Secret Brazilian Charmer

By gao1014 |

I love Brazilian Grills. For those of you who have never tried, and are carnivores, you must find one. In a typical Brazilian Grill, there is a salad bar (not what you're used to) and meat, meat, and more meat. The salad bar normally contains many Brazilian side dishes, i.e. plantains, potato salad, kale, etc. Some of the more expensive places lure you in with shrimp, oysters, clams, fisf and pork shoulder, (obviously so you don't eat a lot of entrees. The biggest attraction at a Brazilian Grill is the 'all you can eat' factor. Servers, dressed in 'goucho garb, walk around the dining room with skewers and skewers of meat. Anything you can imagine is served; including sirloin, pork loin, garlic steak, picanha (sirloin that has been salted while cooking), lamb chops, etc., etc., etc. Prices can average around $40-$50/person plus drinks, taxes and tips. Caipirinha is Brazil's national drink and they can pack a wallop. Basically, its a sugar cane rum, fused with sugar and muddled limes. One and you're feeling pretty good; two, and I hope you're not driving. Anymore and you might just wake up in an alley way a couple of days later. This is not an inexpensive drink. Obviously, you can readily see that your bill can run up to that 3 figure level, per person. If you live in or around the Philadelphia area, I have a treat for you. The Picanha Brazilian Grill is Phillys' version of a 'blue collar' Brazilian Grill. It's fantastic. it's BYOB and most of all, about 50% less expensive. You bring your own ingredients for your drink and the staff will make your Caipirinhas at no extra charge. The salad bar might not be as expansive as other places. but it is enough. Remember, the main reason why you're coming to this restaurant in the first place, is for the meat. Juicy, perfectly grilled meat. Now, you can have the Rodizio (they come to you with the meat), or go to the grill, have them slice it for you and pay for it by the pound. Why pay for the extras if you're not that hungry? Eat a couple pounds of meat and you're paying around $15.00/person. If there is still enough room, you must try the desserts. Notice the plural use of the word. They are great and totally inexpensive. My wife and I usually take out 4-5 desserts. All kinds of cake, flan, puddings, etc. Don't forget the Treys Leches cake. OMG...it's heavenly! Sorry if this was a long review, but I couldn't help myself. Here's a final tip. Try it during the week. Less crowded (less meat choices as well) and they are listed on restaurant.com. Bon Appetite!

Very surprised

By tdoug12 |

Id heard about this place from friends and decided to pay them a visit one day. It's a nice size seemingly friendly place with a down home feel. The food is buffet style or you can get take out platters if you want. They charge by weighing the platter. The food was great. They had a good selection of side and the choice of meats was great. The taste was indescribable. Talk about delicious. Even after taking some home and reheating it, it was great. Their drinks however are ridiculously expensive with no refills. They have a special lemonade the make I believe it's called an island something but it was out of this world. The also offer desserts. I decided to try something that caught my eye from my table. A humongous strawberry which I was told was hand dipped in chocolate and stuffed with a pleasant surprise. This was by far the best starwberry I've ever had I my life. Over all I'd deff eat their again and again. The atmosphere was nice the staff was friendly and the food was great...

Best Traditional Brazilian Restaurant in Philadelphia

By James B |

My family and I have visited Picanha numerous times over the last 10 years. They offer traditional Brazilian food without the glamour and high price of the two big rodizio's in town. They offer rodizio (table service), as well as the option to pay by the pound. Unless you can literally eat an entire cow it truly is a better deal to pay by the pound. The food is very good and the owners are friendly. The restaurant is a byob, so if you like a drink with your food don't forget to bring some.

Relaxing

By Mary C |

My husband and I went out for a special dinner and chose Picanha. We have not been in the restaurant for a while, but it seems they upgraded. Nothing fancy, but a very welcoming and happy atmosphere. The food was delicious, and it was very fresh. It was not crowded when we got there so the food was hot and juicy when it came out. The men bringing the meat out seemed to know not to overwhelm us with meat every few seconds. It was a very enjoyable time and close to home.

My visitor from Saudi Arabia was impressed!

By Dan Schwartz |

My colleague from Saudi Arabia was visiting Philadelphia for the first time for a 10 day workshop at Salus U in Elkins Park, so after picking up Alfarghal at the airport and making the obligatory stops at Termini's for cannoli and Independence Hall, it was dinner at Picanha, as he never had South American food before. Since he's a soccer fan, he felt right at home with the World Cup on the TV, and thoroughly enjoyed the endless food as well as the casual atmosphere. Since I've eaten there many times, the owner stopped by our table to chat with us. What was interesting is that Alfarghal said it was just like the barbeque he had growing up in Egypt -- I guess some things are just universally good. It's a 25 minute drive from Cherry Hill to Picanha Brazilian Grill, but when I'm starved & want a real pig-out this hidden gem is well worth the drive! [We did have one minor slip-up in service: My colleague is a relatively devout, modern Muslim, so when he was at the salad bar I flagged down the waitress to ask that they not bring around any pork or sausage… And a skewer of sausage was the first item the waiter brought by.]

Very good!

By klb0521 |

This review is so late, but here it is. I visited Picanha back on Feb 18. I had a Groupon special and it was well worth it. The potato salad, fried cauliflower and plantains were very good. I also had the rice with shrimp which was delicious. Now on to the meat selections, I tried the BBQ ribs, chicken wrapped in bacon, sausage, and a variety of steak choices. Every single selection was delicious and cooked to perfection! Even when you had your sign set to “NO” they still would ask sometimes if you wanted what they were serving, so that you wouldn’t miss out and I thought that was nice. I was way too stuffed to even think about dessert, so I cannot comment on that. I would definitely make the trip to this restaurant again even without the Groupon and would recommend others to give it a try.

In the heart of Philadelphia's Brazilian neighborhood

By Margaret F |

This place takes me back to "Kilos" in Brazil - places where people gather for good food and conversation at a fair price. This is not one of those pretentious expensive restaurants that pop up in city centers. It's a place where the locals eat. The decor isn't the best (animal heads and hides on the walls) but the welcome is warm. There's an all you can eat option, but we went for the 'kilo' option - or the pound as they called it here. Your filled plate is weighed and you are given a ticket that you use when you pay. It's unlicensed, but they have a variety of fruit drinks. I went for cashew juice. You pick up your plate and graze the salad bar which is well-stocked and fresh. Then to the counter with the scales. That's where you ask for your meat, which is grilling. The guy who weighs the plate also handles the meat grilling and slicing. I went back a second time with my ticket, picked up a clean plate, and got three more slices of meat. There was a range of desserts but we were too satisfied to have room for more. The vegetarian in our group ate well too. The lively neighborhood is home to a range of cultures with shops, places of worship and restaurants that reflect the communities, and the Brazilian presence is striking. It's a busy street but there is plenty of (metered) parking. Picanha, by the way, is the Portuguese for the cut of meat - the delicious crescent-shaped pieces of steak - that you will probably eat here. So you could say "We're going to the rump (or the butt) tonight." Somehow, Picanha sounds better.

Had a Groupon

By beryl g |

We traveled about 45 minutes to Northeast Philly to go here. The restaurant was very crowded for a regular Thursday evening. We were seated immediately, and our wine was taken to open and chill. It took a while to come back, and it took a while for a waitperson to return. The salad bar was only OK. There were odd choices on it, like a sub-sort of salad--onion,tomato, pickle, lettuce-that seemed out of place. Desserts were extra. The meat took a while to come, and they initially only had 1 person going around serving meat, which did eventually become 2 which helped. The meats had no flavor until we put salt and pepper on them. The meat servers, once we told them we didn't eat pork, were wonderful about coming around to us with beef.

We had lunch in this restauran and I have to say i was really impressed. The atmosphere of the place is lovely and the staff extremely friendly. They have 2options: all included or pay by pounds. We opted for all included: the selection of steaks was very big and it was all very delicious. They also have a buffet with salad/fish/rice that did not disappoint. It is a great place for every meat lover

Authentic Brazilian Grill and feel. Very popular with the local Brazilian population. Salad bar is excellent too.

Brazilian Rodizio without breaking bank

Nice atmosphere. Went on a Saturday afternoon (4:30ish) before going to movies, no wait for a table. Authentic Brazilian food served buffet style. They cut the meat, then weigh the plate. You can go up as often as you wish. Recommend the garlic chicken and brisket. Sirloin was also excellent. I recommend easing up on the sides until you know what meat you want as the variety of choices can overwhelm the carnivore in you. Start with small sampling of meats first. Parking is on the street and metered.

Not Fogos, but damn good!

I actually pretty blown away with Picanha. I'm not totally sure what I was expecting before going in, as I (whether fairly or not) judge EVERY Brazilian steakhouse to the holy grail of Brazilian steakhouses, Fogo De Chao. So, before entering, I couldn't entirely wrap my head around how they were going to provide me with all I can eat meat at this small, corner eatery. We entered into this small, but clean and inviting dining room, where I quickly learned that your plate is weighed. (ahhhhh...makes sense! $8.99/lb weekdays, $9.99/lb weekends) You line up to go to the "meat window," where the meat is sliced from the skewer directly onto your plate. How they get you is, they make you walk past the salad bar/buffet on your way, to try and get you to use up your precious ounces. (Pro tip, stick to the meat. Pick ONE side, plus some fried plantains, and put your steak blinders on. Although everything I had from the salad bar was tasty, this is a Brazilian STEAK house, so get your moneys worth). The meat was EXCELLENT! Although it didn't quite reach Fogo levels, I would totally put in on par with say, Na brasa. I would DEFINITELY come here before I went to Rodizio Grill, for example. (if you can't tell, I've been to every friggin Brazilian steak establishment east of the Mississippi.) Lunch prices are reasonible, so if you're smart with your real estate, you can get a belly full of meat for an excellent price. I fell victim to the salad bar trap while waiting in our long line for the meats, but I will be better prepared for my next trip. Fool me twice.... The knocks on Picanha are, 1) the weighing/payment system. You get your plate and put it on the scale, and you are then given a card with a number. You have to hold on to that number and turn it in at the end to find out how much you owe. I had no idea how much my meal was while eating it, and they ask you for drinks AFTER you get your number, and when everyone ordered a drink, they didn't ask for anyones number to know whom to charge what to. It was all very clandestine. 2) This knock may be just personal, and also strangely hypocritical, seeing as how I'm here to eat copious amounts of meat, but the decor is a little jarring. Over the salad bar, mounted on the wall, are 4 HUMONGOUS bull/cow/whatever other animals they serve there, heads, just silently admonishing you for feasting on their flesh. I'm one of those people that doesn't really like to see my food in its pre-my-food conditions, and seeing the heads actually made me feel bad about eating there. I know, I know.....get over it, its a steak house, but I know they don't hug the animals to death before serving them, so its a bit off putting. Still, I'll definitely be back, and will avert my eyes. Totally recommend it if you want some good Brazilian but don't have the time or the scratch to make it to Center City to bang with Fogos.

Will go back

My husband and I go to dinner with another couple once a month. We decided to try Picanha in Feb. What a wonderful treat. We have been to 2 other Brazilian restaurants in NJ and PA. This was the best. The meat that they brought to the table was very well flavored and cooked to perfection. The salad bar had many different dishes each one with a great flavor. It was fresh and enjoyable. Things I have never tried such as cod with black olives. Collard greens which looks like seaweed but just gently sauteed. The setting is casual but delightful! We made a reservation but didn't seem to need it even for a Friday night at 7 p.m. they were steady but not too busy. Def a hidden gem.
