Delicious Dogpatch Delight

By Marjorie Y |

The newly reopened Piccino, in the historic Dogpatch district, is located at 1001 Minnesota -- right around the corner from the 801-22nd St. location. Everything about this place is clean, bright, creative and memorable. The tastes are terrific and each dish is able to stand on its own. We tried two small plates before moving onto a mushroom pizza. We had padron peppers with romesco sauce and a citrusy salad with marinated cucumbers and fried capers. Our roasted mushroom pizza with mushroom pesto was great. With just enough room for dessert, we devoured the chocolate budino with zabaglione and strawberries. Easy street parking in the early evening. website http://www.piccinocafe.com/

Exceptionally Fresh Food

By MeNotDave |

For our party of four, we ordered a little bit from each section of the menu and shared a variety of dishes throughout the meal. The vegetables were incredibly fresh (excellent radish dish, another dish with a beet hummus). The pasta dish with a pesto sauce and the pizza with homemade sausage were wonderful. Save room for the zeppole with caramel sauce.

Superb Quality - Piccino

By Bernard C. La Borie |

At the end of the day, the company you keep and the food that is delivered to your table is all that matters when going to a restaurant. The restaurant can't be responsible for the company but it certainly can for for food quality it delivers. And when you are in San Francisco, freshness is paramount. If you have never been to Piccino's, it is a must!

Simple, clean, fresh , delicious!

Really good on all levels. Energy, decor, service, wine program, food. I wrote a more detailed review on Urbanspoon if you want to read more. Cool part of town in up and coming Dogpatch. david g.

Worth the trip to this out of the way, San Francisco foodie-oriented eatery

By DogenJoe |

I find myself taking out-of-town guests to Piccino because the pizzas, salads, and appetizers represent the best of the San Francisco food scene: organic ingredients, inventive food (European dishes prepared in Northern California ways), and a stylish (casual blonde wood) interior. My favorite menus items include the funghi (mushroom) thin-crust pizza, pork and beef polpette appetizer and any of the salads. The neighborhood is a historic district that used house nearby SF port workers in the first half of the 20th century. Now, it is ground zero for young San Franciscans who work at technology and other nearby start-ups. But don't let their skinny jeans and Teslas scare you away. Piccino is perfect.

Amazing Food

By Kathleen V |

I had lunch at Piccino and really loved the food - the service was a little inattentive but overall the experience was great. Lovely atmosphere and very unique food. About 10 minutes from Union Square but definitely worth taking an Uber! The tuna conserva toast and seared octopus were amazing!

Exquisite renovation & food.

By michael b |

We'd been to the previous location of Piccino many times and always loved it. The space was cozy, if a bit cramped, but the pizzas and salads were among the best in the city. Glad to report that the expanded Piccino is just as lovely. The wine list, chosen by neighboring wine shop, Dig, is varied and interesting. And the chef at Piccino has really stepped up in terms of the menu. It's even more fresh, more enticing. We tried 4 dishes, including one pizza with english peas and peashoots, and each blew us away. We'll definitely be back and will continue to recommend this place to friends and visitors. Only thing i'd change is the service, which was slow but not painfully so.

Loved It!

By mothergirl |

This was a great place for a last night dinner. We had an excellent dinner and the ambience and atmosphere was great. We had a reservation and were promptly seated. We had two servers one was new and observing but I must say she also did very well. Every one of our orders was very delicious. We love Italian food and this place really delivered. We had a great time there.

Inventive delightful carefully prepared food - Wonderful!

By EndlessVoyage |

This is a wonderful spot to pass time with friends or family. A well layed out, warm inviting space with a clear view of the kitchen but not in the least bit noisy. We were there for a late lunch on a Tuesday and they were pretty busy. There is a great vibe in the restaurant. It is relatively easy to park as we came in separate cars. The food was beautiful to see and spectacularly innovative. The nigella seed crackers were indescribably addictive. The salads were each unique and clearly required a great deal of preparation. The fungi pizza was not only gorgeous it tasted wonderful! This is a find. Lunch for two without alcohol was just over $75. Not cheap, but a remarkable experience.

You'll Love This "Little One"

By Elisa Z |

The only reason we were lucky enough to find Piccino in San Francisco's Dogpatch neighborhood is because our niece is a server here ("full disclosure"). In Italian the word Piccino means "little one" and the restaurant is, in fact, a small place -- but there is nothing small about the food. The place was packed on Saturday night so we had the good fortune to be seated at the Chef's Counter where we enjoyed the full energy of the kitchen staff as they created dinner for everyone. We started with the delicate fresh burrata presented on a perfectly crusted and sea-salted fried polenta square, drizzled with fine olive oil and accompanied by crisp watercress. Our pasta dishes were equally satisfying. Mine was the garganelli with kale, succulent bacon, red wine vinegar for tang, and a cured egg yolk on top that added amazing richness to the dish. My husband enjoyed his light ricotta gnudi, brussels sprouts and chervil in walnut brodo. We finished with a thin crust pizza Margherita to which we added Piccino's savory roasted mushrooms for a perfect pizza. We had the feeling that everyone in that busy room was having a great time enjoying this fun, energetic place with their friends.

Open atmosphere, and good food

By Eorland |

One of the coolest things about this restaurant is the open kitchen. It helps in passing the time and it is rather cool to see your food being prepared. The staff is polite and the cafe clean. The wine list is very large and as I mentioned the food great. It is off Third St so easy to get to but a little out of the way. I often cycle there so I can enjoy my food knowing I earned it.

The Pizza was great

By Quills G |

I just moved to the neighbourhood and was eating out a lot and came here one evening. I love the design of the restaurant and the food did not disappoint. You can watch the kitchen staff while they make the food which is always a bonus at a restaurant. I would come here again for a neighbourhood restaurant vibe and good food.

A Festival for your Mouth

By JJFHMB |

Just recently had one of the nicest meals ever. Although it is billed as an Italian cafe, the flavors seem to come from everywhere, and they dance in your mouth, We went with friends, and shared a number of small plates and entrees..... and each one surprised and delighted us. All the way through dessert, it was a delightful experience.

One of SF's Best

By photolandscape |

I live in Portland but am in SF frequently and make a point to dine at Piccino whenever possible. It's one of my favorites anywhere. I am not a foodie per se, but enjoy sitting at the bar taking in the kitchen action. It's really a wonderful place and I am eager to return soon.

Great for a Sunny Day in the City.

By SmilieTravels |

Great spot in Dogpatch for a glass of vino and snacks at lunchtime. Really easy to park here and there are about 8 tables you can sit outside across from the small park. The area is quiet and it is very relaxing with the sun shinning down. Great selections of wines - we are normally red wine only drinkers, however waitress recommended some white as it was hot and it was to die for! Food very good quality and very tasty. Great prices.

Satisfying on all levels

By jan E |

Wonderful ambiance, great service, and the food is amazing. Very fresh, creative and incredibly delicious. The pasta with braised goat was fantastic as were the brussel sprouts.

Great little spot to have a meal

By dubbs605 |

Ate a great lunch at this restaurant. Unique appetizers, awesome pizzas and tasty desserts. A little bit out of the way from downtown, but a quick taxi will get you there quickly

Great Pizza Outside

By smh33 |

We came here in a beautiful day and sat outside for lunch, drank a nice glass of wine, and split a really tasty mushroom pizza. Can't speak for anything else on the menu, but the pizza/wine list are great. The service was not very good the day we went, but it could have been an off day.

Great flatbread

By maryofnavarre |

Great flatbread pizza with unusual mix of ingredients. Service was exceptional and the waitress brought us out a complimentary salad for the table as the kitchen had made an extra by mistake. Try the brussel sprouts side. Out of the way in Dogpatch but it'll only cost you $10 in an Uber from downtown.

Excellent Local

By fleetoffoot |

We were introduced to this great local restaurant by a friend who works close by. The food is farm sourced and simply but very well cooked and presented. A really lovely vibe where locals and newbies are greeted with equal enthusiasm. The place was packed on an early Thursday evening, which speaks volumes.

Excellent delicious food!

By Travellover6128 |

We've eaten here for both dinner and brunch and both times have been excellent. The pizzas are a great size and i would definitely recommend all of them! The addition of an egg is a nice touch for some of the flavors. We've also had the burrata, some of the salads and the meatballs. Again all of them are delicious. Great tasting, fresh ingredients. Service is good, not rushed and prices are reasonable considering the quality. Will definitely be heading back here for more meals.

Loved it!

By albertasn0wbird |

We loved everything about this restaurant - from its charming neighborhood location, its bright and airy room, the laid back vibe, the friendly, well-informed staff, and most especially to the incredible food. Each dish more delicious and interesting than the previous. We shared everything starting with a fresh cabbage and pea salad and a kenne goat cheese appetizer. Our palates nicely primed, we moved on to a seafood pasta and a ricotta gnudi with pesto - superb! We then shared the chicken entree and a vegetarian pizza - so yummy. We finished with a sublime chocolate mousse and divine macadamia nut cake. Honestly, incredible food! Our server recommended a bottle of Vignetti Massa Barbera which went down beautifully with our meal. We left totally satisfied yet longing for more.

Consistent as usual

By Alexa C |

Consistently good Italian restaurant. I always like their pizza topped with an egg. Their entrees change throughout the year and I've hardly ever had anything twice. Their pizzas are always a consistent go to if you want a repeat dish. If you don't like tomato based pizza, they have a bianca with white sauce. You can get fizzy water, which they carbonate in house or flat at no extra charge. They have a good variety of beer and wine on the menu. Only downside is that their prices have gotten higher over the years. You'd be hard pressed to leave without a $30pp dinner before drinks.

Warm Atmosphere, great service

By GalyaMo |

The cafe offers a warm and casual atmosphere, great for get togethers w family and friends. It is conveniently located and easy to park. We were there for Saturday brunch. Had olive oil fried egg, baked egg and datteri pizza. All dishes were delicious and the service was great.

A memorable, superb meal

By rb76 |

This place is superb. All the food was delicious - burrata, cavatelli for myself - the service was very attentive and the wine and beer selection excellent.

Stumbled onto a great experience

By David h |

Two out of town couples enjoying a museum day in the city, just driving around in an area where I had a warehouse over 40 years ago, we stumbled upon a bright yellow building housing Piccino. I mentioned having seen that restaurant name on the Chronicle Top 100 restaurant list for this year. We were in time for the 3-5 pm snack and drink serving . We tried the house made sesame, poppy, and nigella seed crackers with kenne aged goat cheese, stone fruit, and sparrow bread. We also tried the clear broth with several beans and asparagus which was delicious. We drank an Andreas Widman Sudtiroler Vernatsch from Alto Adige, Italy. Excellent light red wine. We also had the marinated olives. As it was now 5 pm we asked if we could stay for dinner. We ordered the pork and beef polpette (meatballs), a house specialty, served with crushed tomato and Parmesan cheese. We then ordered 2 funghi pizzas with roasted mushrooms, stracchino cheese, and shaved garlic. Excellent entrees! Dessert was incredible. At the top of the list was Zeppole, warm Italian doughnuts, small light and airy, sugared, and served with Vanilla bean crema,Meyer lemon curd, and huckleberry. Wow! We highly recommend this restaurant, located on Minnesota at 22nd. A lucky find for us.

Nice italian food

By Vivi S |

We stopped here on the weekend without booking in advance, therefore we had a table outside and we cannot say regarding the atmosphere of the place. Outside it was very pleasant, and we enjoyed two good pizza. We are planning to come back and try other items in the menu. On weekends, they suggest to book beforehand.

Great local restaurant

By ybhk19 |

First of all, the service; unique, i.e. professional, smiling, patient and knowledgeable . Then the food- Italian like with a personal twist. Mostly recommended, i personally, will no doubt return

Delicious....Tasty.....and yet Disappointing!

By nagasefong |

Arrived at Noon midweek....and the place was packed with happy people! Had a great pasta, but had to ask for some bread. Then tried their Bianca pizza with a light beer....Couldn't be better! The bill arrived , quite expensive, but still happy because of the wonderful tasty dishes....THEN disappointment! A charge for a few slices of French bread! Over $3.00! Why this? Cannot remember this happening elsewhere....Great food, 'although expensive....then left with a deflated attitude.

Good food, attentive service

By Jamie G |

I've not spent much time in the Dogpatch but this is definitely a gem of a brunch spot! The open kitchen and busy staff added to the ambiance. The menu had some unique options and everything we ordered - potato pizza, granola, zepolle, and corn soup - but felt a little overpriced even for SF. That said, our server was an absolute delight and came to our rescue in fixing the only thing that felt out of place...the music. On a beautifully calm, Saturday morning in the very SF feeling restaurant, the speakers were beaming with old school funk music that should really only be reserved for Bar Mitzvahs! All in all, great service and delicious meal and I'd love to come back with a group and sit at one of the long, beautiful wooden tables!

Sweet little Italian spot worth a visit

By Amy D |

I absolutely loved my lunch at Piccino. I was traveling on business and wanted a break from both the conference I was attending as well as Union Square. Piccino in "Dogpatch" neighborhood was exactly the vibe I was looking for. I typically would run right over to Delfina's in the Mission but felt adventurous and wanted something new. While I only had lunch (sat at the bar which is practically in the kitchen or rather, the bar surrounds the kitchen....much fun!) I would say this spot fits right in between Delfina's pizzeria and it's more formal restaurant. I had a salad, a pizza and a glass of wine, went around the corner for a coffee to go from Piccino's coffee shop. A perfectly llight, casual, well-prepared and delightful meal, looking forward to coming back for dinner next I am in town. Give this place a try, you will enjoy!

Consistently excellent; a solid 4.8!

By Ileinie |

Having traveled to SF several times a year and lived briefly in Dogpatch, I am thrilled to report that the food and service at Piccino are as good as ever. We always love the octopus and pizza, but the pastas, salads and sides are also delicious.

Good food, wine prices are too high

By Heather M |

We've been to his restaurant multiple times but are considering not going back. The food is quite good, never been disappointed. The wine prices were normal for a restaurant a year ago but they have been raised. Now everyone know that alcohol is where profits are found for restaurants. However most restaurants sell a bottle of wine for 3 times retail tops. Piccino is at 4 to 5 times retail. Remember they likely paid half of retail. This is gouging. With some other excellent restaurants in Dogpatch now time to go to the competition.

Yum!

By Marilyn C |

Delicious pizzas and salads. Interesting wine list includes wine by the glass/half carafe and carafe plus bottles. Service is excellent and the wait staff is knowledgeable and accommodating. Recommended! Best to make a reservation, especially during peak dining times.

Gourmet Italian - delicious

By Rajan M |

Excellent gourmet Italian food, with fantastic service. Very fresh food, varied wine list, all in a neighborhood restaurant that offers a feel of intimacy and charm. The pork and beef polpette was superb, but the squid ink spaghetti with octopus bolognese was probably one of the best dishes I have had in a very long time. We look forward to dining here again and trying out their pizzas and other menu items.

so pleasantly surprised!

By maize12 |

very tasty beginning..excellent wine ...entrees and pizzas that complemented each other ..and service that gave advice without condensation! a most enjoyable experience in a city full of quality food experiences...a treat for sure!

tiny gem of a place with delicate italian food

By Cindy B |

Piccino is a little corner restaurant in the dogpatch area of Potrero Hill. Great handcrafted food. It's not cheap, but all quality ingredients very thoughtfully prepared. fantastic coffee. this place is tiny and I haven't had dinner there, but lunches have been always a delight. if you're hungry, try the soups or something more filling, like polenta if its on the menu that week. its not round table pizza, so if you go in expecting to come out stuffed, you'll be disappointed. if you want to be surprised by its uniqueness and delicacy, you'll be very happy. the little biscotti with a cappuccino is the perfect dessert to finish at this place. p.s., try to get a table inside. it can be cold at one of the sidewalk tables.

Best eating in San Fran

By NZ-AJ |

This was our best eating experience in San Fran. We were able to sit at the bar and watch the food being beautifully prepared in front of us. Each of the busy chefs took such care in bringing the dishes together. We had a variety of snack foods as well as pizza and homemade lemonade. All of it was simply divine! The Italian doughnuts were the highlight. We even ordered a second plate! The service was excellent. The fabulous designer clothing store next store was an added bonus!

Great Dining Spot in the Dogwatch

By Aluor |

Modern, clean and airy decor, cute neighborhood, easy parking, very nice servers, yummy food (delicious thin crust pizza). A popular neighborhood spot. We enjoyed our dinner from the food, to the atmosphere, to the fact that we could carry on a conversation in a busy but not loud space. Would go there again if in that neighborhood.

Cozy, Comfy Italian Restaurant in the Dogpatch

By AlexVisitstheWorld |

All in all, a great Italian Restaurant to consider. The overall atmosphere is airy, comfortable, and modern, with a large bar wrapping around an open-air kitchen, and lots of tables large and small. Service is also friendly. A perfect venue for a good meal, no matter what time of day or occasion.

Tuscan-style dishes with a light California touch

By CJ G |

Tuscan-style dishes with a light California touch abound at Piccino. With its rough wood floors, natural wood counter and tables, upbeat, but not too loud, music, and otherwise minimalist decor, the dining room at Piccino makes it clear that it's all about the food. If diners were left with any doubt of the importance owners Sher Rogat and Margherita Stewart Sagan place on the cuisine, the open kitchen where patrons can watch their dishes being carefully prepared quickly dispels them. The menu features classic, seasonally driven thin-crust pizzas and polpette (Tuscan-style pork and beef meatballs), salads, soups, and house-made pastas, as well as contorni (vegetable sides), and entrees of meat, fish, or poultry. The mixed chiccodia (chicory) in an achiovy-rich, Cesar-like dressing was a fresh, light starter. Unfortunately, the thin house-made crisps tucked in the salad became a little soggy from an over application of dressing.  Bucking the wood-fired oven trend, the pizzas are cooked in a standard pizza oven. The thin crust is almost cracker-like--not chewy, but not too dry. The delicate crust is perfectly cooked--lightly browned (not burned) on the edges and not soggy in the center--a combination I have not experienced since a glorious lunch at Bond 45 in New York. The wine list focuses on Italian producers with a sprinkling of California standouts. With a substantial number of wines by the glass as well as by the bottle--from a fruity Prosecco to a hearty Alianico from Pietracupa--diners will have no trouble finding an appropriate choice to complement each dish. For dessert, be sure to try the light but satisfying zeppole (St. Joseph's Day cake, also called sfinge) with cardamom cream and candied orange peel. One minor fly in the soup, however:  while it is de rigueur in many restaurants to provide complementary filtered still or sparkling water, Piccino still chooses to pad the bill by charging $2 for this most basic part of the dining experience. (Minus one star.) Simple and beautiful, Piccino is a Dogpatch standout.

Group dinner

By Outtolunch |

Nine of us for dinner, including two vegans. the staff was very friendly and accommodating, making sure the vegans were taken care of as well. Four pizzas, four salads, some wine, and two desserts with their added 20% gratuity $900. San Francisco is pricey!

Very good pizza and salads

By FlyingCloud |

Pizzas well done but a bit sparse as toppings -- how about more than 1 basil leaf on the estrada: heirloom tomato, gaeta olive, mozzarella, fontina, basil, chili oil pizza? This is a good salad: piccino fields radish, snap pea, tonnato, puffed rice, almond, crispy garlic. Garlic gets this salad up and going. Puffed rice is a fun wrinkle. Staff friendly and helpful.

Awesome dining in an awesome space

By sansa31 |

I enjoyed everything about Piccino... The actual building is worth going for alone... great original barn doors , great light and shopping for clothes and wine right next door.. Good parking and VERY EASY to get to right off the freeway. Delicious wine pairings with a knowledgeable ,passionate staff all the way to Chantea the hostess. And the menu.. lunch and dinner is simple and delicious. one of the moistest chicken dishes I have ever had with a great sauce that I wish I would have had some bread to mop up. Great salads and pizza.. MOLTO BENE.. can't wait to go back.

Can't wait to go back!

By bynic |

This is an easy review,....the food is awesome, the people who work there are friendly, the prices are very reasonable, and I can't wait to go back. if you sit at the food bar you can watch your food being prepared. The dining area, the kitchen, the bathrooms, the plates, glass's, and the utensils are very clean. This great restaurant is a must,...put it on your next dining night out with friends or family.

Best Authentic California Italian Food

By nlcd |

I worked nearby for 6 or 7 years so I think I know this place really well. I love all their dishes. Nothing has ever disappointed me. But my favorite --- the sausage pizza. It's amazing. And the crest is fabulous. All their pastries are simple but so well worth it. Great place for lunch. Lovely for weekends...and nice for evenings.

Pensive @ Piccino

By briankulaf |

For an average brunch entree at $18.00 I expected more. Much more. The ingredients were good and touted as farm to table. ( Now becoming a cliche ) my guests settled for the scrambled eggs with fresh corn, potatoes, and tomatoes. The scrambled eggs were a generous portion while the accompanying veg were minuscule for $20.00. My seasonal corn pizza was good but not great. The center of the pizza was soggy and couldn't hold the weight of the ingredients as Pizzetta 211 Delfina. And at $22.00, I expected a lot more. Wah, wah, waaaaaah.

Lunch in the sunshine

By Victoria P |

Piccino was recommended to us by a colleague who lives locally and is a regular. We had a great lunch with a mix of pizzas and salads between us, perfect unfussy lunchtime food made from fresh tasty ingredients. We chose to sit outside and soak up some sunshine along with our lunch. Friendly staff who know the menu well. I would recommend trying out Piccino's if you are in the area.

A perfect night with amazing food and lovely restaurant

By Avocadochica |

Hey, Jacob. Thanks for helping Mirella and I have a great dinner experience last Sunday. We really felt comfortable at your restaurant and found the server, whose name I can't remember, very helpful and gracious. We also liked the music; Mirella tried to Shazam one of the songs but I guess it was too obscure as Shazam failed to identify it. We had a little trouble selecting a wine since we almost never venture away from north-coast California Chardonnays. So we told our server what we liked, he selected for us the Cantina Terlon "Vorberg" and we were very satisfied. We appreciated the small menu and ended up picking one item from each category. We selected the "kenne" aged goat cheese and the broccoli soup; our server described each of these dishes expertly and we really liked them. The rib eye tartare was amazing. We savored all 4 of the main ingredients and really liked hearing about the corn mustard preparation. It was also really nice to look at; I believe that it was ordered by 1-2 patrons from adjacent tables once they saw ours. The complementary fusilli that you served to us personally was also very enjoyable and appreciated. The polpette dish was really nice; the Piccino reviews that Mirella read before hand spoke highly of the meat-balls. By the time we were half way through with that super-delicious funghi pizza, we were stuffed and happy. We only wish that we had left enough room to have a couple of the ice cream sandwiches; these were also enthusiastically mentioned in the Piccino reviews. But that single scoop of delicious ice cream that you gave to us was perfect. Thanks for including our avocados on your menu in such a complementary way. Though we loved the funghi, next time we will definitely select a pizza to which your server recommends adding avocado. I look forward to seeing you again at the market. Your Humble servant, Will

Great dinner spot in Dogpatch

By Rick T |

Our good friends introduced us to this wonderful place last evening. Setting is very pleasant, noise level conducive to conversation. Chairs need booster cushions - so ask for them. Food is outstanding. Overate myself cause I couldn't stop. Everything was excellent. Service was prompt, courteous, and friendly. It's a keeper!

Cute Cafe

By NancySF |

Went to this cute restaurant on a sunny day in San Francisco and we were able to sit outside. It's located in a very up and coming area called Dogpatch. The service was excellent and the outside area was totally full of people enjoying the sun and the atmosphere. We ordered three different things. I had the funghi pizza which was a very thin crusted pizza with roasted mushrooms, stracchino, shaved garlic. Stracchino is a mild cheese, like a cheddar. It was quite good. Cost $17. The other two people had smaller items, one which appeared to me to be a small plate of butter lettuce with some radishes and the other being something I could not recognize, also a very small portion. The prices are rather high for the amount of food, but the service and ambiance are worth it.

Fantastic food, but what's happened to the service

By ptflyer |

We've been devoted to PIccino for a few years now. We remain devotees of the laid-back Dogpatch locale, which sees more sun than any other neighborhood in San Francisco...especially appreciated in our fogbound summertime! We loved the brunch fare, thin crust pizzas with eggs on top and lovely jewel-like artisanal salads. And we adored the staff, so friendly that they actually knew our names and seemed so pleased to see us and our mutts every weekend at their cramped and spare original space. Now Piccino has moved down the block to a new location, easily 5x the size of the old place. The food remains sensational, and the setting now so chic and trendy...but what has happened to the service? The past few times we have gone the servers appear so disorganized, and no one seems to care or even notice whether we actually get our food or not. Last time we waited 20 minutes for a menu, and over an hour for our food...simple sandwiches, not even pizza. We miss the old Piccino!

Lovely restaurant in charmingly funky neighborhood

By JimSeth |

We found Piccino through the recommendation of a SF resident. It's located in Dogpatch, small, relatively undeveloped area near the wharves of SF bay, made more accessible through the expansion a few years ago of Muni tram system. Piccino's dining room is very pretty, large, open and sunny, but we chose to sit at the bar by the open kitchen for our lunch. Rather than order two entrees, we decided to share a pizza and salad. We are two large men with hearty appetites, and yet we were perfectly happy with the portions. We shared the pizza salsiccia made with house-made sausage, mozzarella, and red onion, and a salad of early girl tomatoes, burrata, crispy polenta, watercress, dressed with red wine vinegar and oil. Delicious. The staff was very friendly. While sitting at the bar, I saw the pastry chef making dough. I started talking to her about what she was making and we struck up a conversation about food. Then the sous-chef, who must be the handsomest man working in a kitchen in SF, joined in. He let us sample the pickled carrots used in one of their dishes. We also got the name from the pastry chef of a fantastic Burmese restaurant for dinner later that evening. Having made a connection with the pastry chef, we couldn't pass up trying one of her deserts, so we ordered the passito rosso paoched figs served with a mascarpone mousse, hazelnuts, and coco nib on top of a toasted piece of polenta. Wonderful flavors. All in all, a great experience.

Slice of Italy - go now!

By marshcanon |

The thin crust pizza took my wife back to Italy. She is a huge fan of think crust pizza, and this was one of the few places that reminded her of the classic pies from Italy. We also had the citrus salad which was a nice blend of oranges and fresh greens. The pasta was a flavorful dish, but I saw someone else eating the meatballs, and that looked amazing along with the lasagna. This again is a gem in an up and coming neighborhood. Don't wait until the new basketball arena opens, you'll never be able to get into any of these restaurants.

Pizza great

By golem67 |

Mushroom pizza good for two as starter, and other pizza options good as well. Wine choices also respectable. We were six, four adults and two teens, bill was about $45 pp. service was okay. Ambiance nothing special.

Worth a trip to the Dogpatch!

By shezswan |

The starters and desserts were the best - inventive but not crazy, perfect portion sizes and very pleasant service. The Burrata-polenta starter was heavenly, as was the hazelnut chocolate torte for dessert. Located in a cute yellow building on the corner, the space is open and modern.

Pleasant Spot in Dogpatch

Dined here recently while visiting friend in Dogpatch. Pleasant surroundings, varied menu, good pizza and friendly service. A good option in this part of town.

Fantastic, unpretentious food

By DrCogIRL |

I had dinner here with some work colleagues. It was a last minute booking based on a recommendation from a friend. I had polenta with burrata for starter. It was light and the contrast of crispy polenta and creamy burrata was delicious. For my main course, I had a lamb shank - it was cooked perfectly and fell off the bone. Well seasoned and really delicious. We enjoyed a local red which was a great match. Whether it was my jet lag, my order or the menu in general, the food here was a perfect balance of flavours without being overly heavy. Highly recommended.

No line for an excellent brunch

By Holly B |

Maybe after this and other positive reviews, we'll have tarnished the brilliant aspect of dining at Piccino, which is little or no waiting for brunch on a Sunday in San Francisco. Our party of four arrived on a sunny day in Dogpatch (the neighborhood), were seated immediately, served exceptional mimosas (fresh OJ), and ordered four different egg dishes, each of which, especially the soft scramble, was accompanied by beautifully prepared seasonal vegetables. The table next to us enjoyed several bottles of fine wine along with a variety of pizzas, and were gushing pleasantly. The ambience is light and bright yet homey. We'll be back!

Special Food, Great Space

By Jill D |

First, full disclosure: My sister-in-law is co-partner in Piccino! But that truly has nothing to do with my ravings about the food and atmosphere created in the late-1800s Yellow Building in Dogpatch. We had my birthday dinner there last weekend, and every mouthful was better than ever before. The faro and cauliflower, the roasted beet salad with goat cheese...and somehow, Piccino's new chef has made even the menace of brussels sprouts a joyful experience! I was making so many happy noises that the group at the next table asked for recommendations, which we happily gave, and that they in turn, loved. What I love is that almost all dishes are made from local, seasonal foods. I notice every time I'm there is that everyone is having a great time together, enjoying the food. Somehow, even with lots of chatter and subtle music, it's not overly loud. The wait staff are knowledgeable and friendly. My one warning is that if you're not a real coffee freak, make sure that you order carefully. I find it to be way too strong and bitter. I'm sticking to their nice selection of teas from now on -- to have with one of Piccino's to-die-for desserts!

Intimate spot in an ecelctic neighborhood with great food

By GeraldP1941 |

Located in Dogpatch neighborhood of San Francisco, this restaurant serves a delicious array of Italian food. Reservations are a must. Come early and walk the smart shops nearby. Not too far from SF Giants ( AT&T Park) either by driving or Muni. Parking is pretty easy.

Perfect choice

By Valentina M |

Perfect place to stop and... Take it easy!!! Very clean, modern but cosy and the staff is very kind. The menu is simple and the food very very good.

Cute spot

By Michelle J |

Cute restaurant that was busy on a weeknight. We sat at the bar and enjoyed the busy kitchen scene. Pasta was definitely better than the funghi pizza. The mushrooms looked like a bunch of worms so it did not look appetizing. A bit overpriced.

Brunch

By Aliraad M |

I give a 4 because of the followings: 1- the food portion is fairly small and not worth the price 2-There is a charge to refill your coffee which is absurd for these type of restaurants. 3-Overall pricey, food wasn't a wow. You can find less expensive brunch places in the city with similar or even better food quality. However, the waiter was nice and helpful. The ambience is good. Good place if you want to go on a date but definitely not suitable if you are hungry and looking for a traditional brunch place.

Perfect ending

Such a perfect little gem in San Francisco!! Wonderful menu, great staff and loved the vibe from the expo kitchen!! I will defiantly be back the next time I'm in the city!!

Amazing food. Reasonable prices

By mdgwind |

This is my neighborhood place but it really is quite a special restaurant. They serve California and Italian cuisine that is phenomenal. Their menu changes regularly although some things stay on the menu such as their thin crust pizzas. I recommend the mushroom Pizza, which is always fantastic. Their starters and appetizers tend to be excellent with interesting flavors. It has a nice bar which you can sit up and watch the chefs cook as well. They have a separate pastry chef and a dessert chef so definitely try out the desserts if you have room.

overpriced

By EmilyEgypt |

overpriced for the portions..Pasta costs 18 dollars for something like 10 pieces in the plate, pizza was better but still not easy to bite..we left hungry and were like "ok let's find somewhere else to eat ! "

Bustling yet relaxed restaurant in an oasis of calm in San Francisco

By rshorens |

We decided to try Piccino for lunch on a warm sunny day in December. We had read about the neighborhood, called "Dogpatch", close to downtown San Francisco . It is a lovely area of quaint homes and small businesses south of the Embarcadero and ballpark. The restaurant is modern with lots of light, but since the sun was wonderful, we sat at one of the outside tables. We had delicious squash and apple soup along with a lovely fresh salad featuring lettuce and persimmon. Bread was Acme compagnon, my favorite. The pizzas also looked appetizing. Hose-made sparkling water is complimentaryThe prices were moderate and service was attentive. 2 blocks away is Mr. and Mrs. Miscellaneous, a store offering home made ice cream. We were able to park on the street on a weekday. Altogether a lovely place for lunch, only minutes away by car from the Ferry Building or Union Square.

Maybe it was a bad night

By Davidinca |

Had light dinner yesterday with a friend. Tried several small plates. Kind of pricy for what you received. Ran out of Cab wine which was listed on menu, Ordered a salad with smoked salmon, and it arrived without the salmon. Requested bread which seemed to take forever. Dessert menu was unintelligible. Needs re-write. On top of that got sick last night suggesting possible food poisoning. I don't plan on returning.

Terrific Italian/Californian food in a cozy neighborhood location

By mdgwind |

This is my local neighborhood restaurant, which I rarely go to because I look to cook or leave my neighborhood to eat. My brother, a foodie, visited from LA twice this month and he wanted to go there both times, he loves it so much. Casual, elegant setting. Some tables are family style. Bar overlooking kitchen is fun to sit at. Highlights are their thin crust pizzas, especially 4 mushroom pizza (best I've ever had). Excellent meats, chicken, fish, pasta. Tasty appetizers, such as the goat cheese. Have separate dessert and pastry chefs - amazing desserts. Good wine list, albeit a bit pricey. Solid service. I'm going back tonight with some foreign guests.

My Favourite Restaurant in Dog Patch

By Jamesthewineguy |

I have always had a fantastic meal at Piccino. On my most recent visit I had a meal of the best combination of starters, pizzas and pastas. I had a super fresh and carefully prepared Verdure Crude with Baba Ghanoush, the Garden Salad is well prepared with the freshest of ingredients. The Cucumber Salad has stone fruit (peaches), radish, mint, parsley and sumac was outstanding. The Strozzapreti, nettle pesto and mushroom was absolutely beautiful and fulfilling. The Chiocciole and fennel sausage is not to be missed--the fennel sausage has a bit of heat spice. I had a small slice of the Margherita, Aglio and Bianca. The pizza's are nicely thin with very high quality ingredients. Each dish I had was completely satisfying. Piccino has a nice and well edited wine list. A very good experience each time I dine here.

Sit at the Bar and Watch the Meticulous Works of Art Created

By JeriLG |

We tried this restaurant on a recommendation but had no reservations. It was noon on a Sunday. We were able to get seats at the bar and were thrilled. We watched as a chef brushed Chanterelles with a paint brush to clean them, analyzing each individual mushroom. I ordered the flatbread for that very reason. Each plate was individually prepared and really a work of art. The special that day was a radish salad. Each bite was full of perfect flavors and textures. We would love to try it again and sample menus other than brunch. Recommend this one!

best pizza!

By katrineCPH |

Went here for lunch. Had beets salad and pizza; one Margherita and one with green goat's cheese, garlic and fennel. Everything was delicious, the pizzas were among the best we have ever had. It is a sweet little restaurant in an interesting neighborhood. Staff were very friendly. We will definitely come back.

Interesting Food in a Festive Atmosphere

By tomhoster |

Really varied, interesting food in a lively setting. The waitress was very knowledgeable about both the food and the wine. I recommend the octopus, and although it sounds boring, the meatballs, which were terrific.

Excellent food, but charging for a coffee refill?

By Ced Craig |

The food is excellent. We ate the following: Bianca and saliccia pizzas, the bean soup, octopus, trout, and the polpette. To drink: two coffees and a 1/2 bottle of the Peay Chardonnay. The bianca pizza and the trout were outstanding. The remaining items very good to excellent. The wine was quite good, but very expensive: $48 for a 1/2 bottle. The service was good, not excellent, as the place was full. The noise level was quite high as well, so not the best for quiet conversation. The bill for 4 with tip was $220, so you'd think they could spring for one coffee refill. But their policy is no refills. Really? Really? The mugs are large so not that many people are even going to ask for a refill. And if the concern is someone just drinking coffee all day, then change the policy to allow one free refill. Given the large size of the mug virtually no one, save a coffee hobo, will need a second refill. It strikes me as insulting not to have one coffee refill, given the prices charged. Even if the coffee is specially sourced yada yada yada. Instead of focusing on the quality of the food, I'm now focused on the cheapskate coffee refill policy. And c'mon, $48 for a 1/2 bottle of wine, decent though it is?

cozy neighborhood gem

By aerotraveller |

Last night's heirloom tomato salad and the Pizza Bianchi were heavenly! And don't miss their homemade lemonade. This cozy neighborhood spot is one of my favorites for an informal, satisfying bite. Thank you Piccino!

Made me want to eat more veggies!

By AuldMoney |

The restaurant is located in the DogPatch neighborhood of SF. It's a great space and the service was very good as well. Parking might be a little tough, but there's a muni stop within two blocks. They serve great coffee, like so many places in SF do, which was the only beverage we ordered with our meal. We shared several plates and since it was cold outside, we started with the Butternut Squash soup (w/toasted pumpkin seeds and fried sage). It was very flavorful, but a little thinner than what everyone was expecting. Still, I'd order it again and I rarely drink soup! We also enjoyed the cauliflower with farro and almonds. Lots of flavor and this was my fav app. Sticking with the butternut squash theme, we also ordered the Kale and Butternut squash salad with pomegranate and toasted pecans. It was served with a delicious celery root puree as well. We also enjoyed the pork/beef polpette (meatballs) that I could have probably eaten several more of! Next up, we had the Napoletana pizza (anchovy, olives and tomato - no cheese). Which was lovely - especially if you like anchovy's or if you're someone that can't have dairy. We also ordered the roasted turnips (w/walnuts and bals vin), however that was the least fav dish amongst all of us. We didn't have room for dessert but we'll be back again someday soon!

Wow! Tempting your palate!

By stevieblv |

From the moment I walked in! You must order the : Pork & Beef Polpette, crushes tomatoes, Parmesan... I was told the recipe was over 100 years old! Words can not describe how tasty this dish is...ok I had a few more things.... fantastic place

Best new place in SF, just delightful space, food and service!

By Matilda |

Ate in several restaurants in SF and Napa (Zuni, Bouchon Napa) in recent visit but this was the highlight and the only one I repeated. Modern open space with exposed kitchen and some communal tables, very light, makes a delightful setting for lunch or dinner. Staff is very attentive and pleasant. Food is wonderful, but our highlights were: the pardon peppers in season; the early girl tomato soup; heirloom tomato salad; baked semolina gnocchi with poached egg; seared halibut; and the etrusca pizzas. All amazingly fresh ingredients and well prepared. Try the Terres de Velle Chardonnay (France) and the Occhipinti Frappato, a delicious light Sicilian red. Can't wait to go back.

Perhaps the best little restaurant in town.

By KeenerOnFood |

This is a gem in the Dog Patch section of San Francisco. The ingredients always come fresh from local growers and farmers markets, and from there the chef works her magic to create wonderful starters, small plates and fabulous pizzas. They also have a wine shop next door so the selections are good as are the prices. The atmosphere is casual yet with a subdued hum in the background as diners savor every bite.

great neighborhood restaurant

interesting food, great wine list, comfortable room, great wait staff, easy parking. communal table. good pizza, but everything is good.

San Fran - Wow!

By Silverwoods |

I had an amazing casual dinner with 2 other business clients at this restaurant near AT&T Park. The Panzsanella starter was super tasty and i highly recommend it. All 3 of us ordered different pizzas. All of us loved the za'. Thin crusted and yummy. However, the best was saved for last. Two of us ordered their Ice Cream Sandwich dessert. It was a delicious choco cookie with real coconut and chocolate gelato in between the biscuits. Outstanding! Best dessert ever for this chocoholic. All of this for $100 including wine and tip. Great value and a great meal. Plus we went to the Giants game and watch them beat those bums from Milwaukee 4 - 1.

great coffee

By Lindsay W |

First off, we did not visit the restaurant on Minnesota Street side. Around the corner on 22nd street, they have a coffee spot. The coffee here is the same that you expect to get in Italy and Australia. Not the stuff that looks and tastes like dish water, but the quality that coffee lovers dream about. They also provide graet muffins and mini rolls.

A Taste of Italy in the Dogpatch

By stallegro |

A bit of a hike for those of us living in Marin but well worth it. My husband is Italian from Padova so he can be harsh on restaurants claiming to be Italian. Their pizza's are thin crusted and fired to perfection in a wood oven. We had the Salsiccio (sausage) with homemade sausage, 4 cheeses and a lovely melt in your mouth tomato sauce. You can usually judge a good Italian place by their sauce and my husband Giorgio gave it two thumbs up. The pizza is good for 1.5 people so you can either have it as a starter or pair it with some of their veggie dishes. We had the sauteed greens gently tossed in garlic, citrus and olive oil for a refreshingly green experience. Lastly we tried the meatballs. Again the tomato sauce was fresh and zesty. They have a nice wine and beer selection. This is a great place to go before or after a Giants game as it is not to far from the stadium (you do have to drive) and it will land you in one of SF's hottest new neighborhoods affectionately called "the Dogpatch". Reservations recommended as they had a huge wait while we were eating. Buon Appetito.

If you LOVE pizza, then this is place for you!

By Susan C |

OMG. Wonderful thin crust pizza. Perfectly cooked. Very tasty. Salads were very interesting and well done. However, it seems that this place like others in San Francisco, for some reason, need to salt the salads (what's that all about??). If you don't want it, be sure to ask.

Family Friendly Elegant Dining

By LauraNatalieBee |

I love this place. It dwells in one of San Francisco's most unique neighborhoods, which few people know about, right on the edges of town, called the Dogpatch. Piccino is family-owned, and maintains a warm atmosphere, with the taste and integrity of fine dining. The servers all know every ingredient that goes into every dish, and the chefs are always integrating seasonal ingredients into the ever-changing menu. I love coming in for fresh coffee, sunlit afternoons, and great conversation.

Small portions with huge price tag

By Marishechka |

We had a dinner at this place on Friday. We reserved a table for 3 and was dotted at the toons table next to the exit. People were getting out every other minute snd doir constantly opened. It was cold smd unpleasant status tanks. So after about 10 minutes U asked to move to a better location . We have changed tbd tables snd SF his point we got comfy. The menue was not very big & choices of pasta snd pizza were not huge. However, prices were on the high side . each of us had ordered a salad , one pizza to share, and 2 pasta and one fish with beans and bottle if Italian Rose wine. Portions sizes are very small comparing to what they charge for it. The taste of the pasta and salad were just ok, freshly made but are too pricey. We left almost $200 for 3 people . We left hungry

A San Fran treat off the beaten path

By charlesj18 |

Piccino is a light, bright contemporary space that is well done. With windows overlooking a hip clothing store it reflects the neat quirkiness of Dogpatch, well known for the always packed "Just For You Cafe" We had an early Saturday lunch, super friendly staff, open and airy interior full of fresh air and sunlight. Couples and families all having fun. Very nice wine list that was well enjoyed by the customers, also great iced tea and Arnold Palmers. It's a simple and straight forward menu. We really liked the pork and beef polpette, wonderful little meatballs of beef and pork. Also the individual pizzas are thin, crisp and delicious, try the margarita with anchovies. The pannini with pork belly was also great. Desserts were good especially the affogato with espresso and lemon verbena. Prices are very fair and the service we experienced was just right. And parking was easy, how often can you say that?

All good: ambiance, menu, staff

By Judith D |

A friend and I went here after visiting the galleries at the Minnesota project. It was on a weekday, so we easily got a table. I can imagine that this place gets busy on weekends. We combed through the menu, taking our time to talk about the many appealing options. In the end, we shared the crostini with olives and burrata cheese. The touch of pomegranate molasses contributed a nice spark. For my main course, I had a pasta: strozzapreti with very thin slices of squash and gouda. My friend ordered one of the thin-crust pizzas and was surprised at the large size when it arrived. She took half of the pizza home to enjoy later.

GREAT pasta and good pizza - Italian food here is good

Amazing handmade pasta, great sauces that are creative and flavorful. Pizza was simple but really good.

Great Brunch Alternative to Aino opposite corner

By Rumbarox |

Visiting for business and was directed to this area for brunch but found three-hours walk-in waits for Aino who directed us elsewhere instead of this charming elegant spacious restaurant located directly opposite corner with close by easy parking lot. The salad is fresh with light tangy dressing, the scrambled egg moist and delicious, and the stone-fruit (peaches) with ricotta, pancetta and arugula pizza has thin crust and is an elegant light dish to share. Thoroughly appreciated.

unique and an actual dining experience

By hamss |

This is located in Dog-Patch, which is near the mission and is an up and coming neighborhood. My friend is the manager and the director of wine so we checked it out while on vacation and didn't know what to expect. They have a daily menu and to be honest, we couldn't really understand it and I have had soem frou-frou food before. We received a gift from the kitchen, which were some peppers that looked like teeny tiny green peppers on cherry stems with sea salt and a roasted red pepper hummus for dipping- delicious. Entree- pizza bianca with fresh garlic- delicious Gnocchi- with pesto, peas, carrots and in a broth instead of a sauce. The gnocchi was in a square, not individual pieces like usual.- Delicious. My mom actually savored it and was trying to crack the recipe Dessert- chocolate hazelnut tort - YUM & Stonefruit tarte (no idea what this is) and candied walnuts. again delicious. Wine was pricey at $11 per glass for what I tried, but the whole night was a memorable experience. Clean, open kitchen, nad friendly staff that is clearly focused on delivering a unique dining experience as well as a chef who is trying to push the envelope

A wonderful dining experience

By sjc68 |

Wow. My friend read about Piccino in a German language magazine about the Dogpatch neighborhood in San Francisco. The service, food and ambience were great. We shared a number of small plates. Highlights were the goat cheese with raspberry purée and home-made zucchini walnut bead starter. The cucumber and melon caprese salad was equally fresh, delicious and beautifully presented. A nice wine list of mostly Italian and California wines. I can't say enough about this charming neighborhood bistro! The crowd was locals of all ages. Prices were reasonable. I think we were the only tourists there on this particular Sunday evening. It is a $12 cab ride from Union Square-- well worth the extra expense.

Questionable service but good food

By Weissba14 |

My friend, who just moved into this neighborhood, took me here to try out the local faire. The atmosphere is pleasant, but our server, Holly J, was not particularly. When questioned about their Arnold Palmer drink, which did not look or taste like an Arnold Palmer, she was curt and acted offended that it would be questioned, "This is OUR Arnold Palmer!" The other staff who serviced our table not as terse, but were not friendly either. We had to ask for bread and were told that they were running short; they brought us two small pieces of bread. We did not order wine because the prices seemed high. I must say that the polpette and funghi pizza were delicious, and the portions for these two dishes were generous, as we shared them. I am not sure if the food outweighs the vibes enough to try it again.

Lunch, dinner, a drink

By lemoncc1000 |

This is our regular place. the pizza is thin and wonderful, the cheese salad dishes are amazing. pasta is also yummy. I love the wine selections here, very low key and inexpensive. perfect for a neighborhood place.

Our new fave SF eatery!

By MakiWong |

We've had 2 meals here, both memorable. The flavors are well balanced, food perfectly cooked, ingredients fresh and naturally tasty. Both times we ordered the thin crust pizza with nettles. We also loved the roast chicken & sturgeon entrees. We found the following to be underwhelming: burrata with polenta appetizer, chocolate brioche dessert and poached pears and figs dessert. They lacked wow factor. Overall, this is a foodie heaven in the trendy Dogpatch 'hood. Food is a cut above, best ingredients, clean pristine flavors. Going back soon!

Great neighborhood restaurant

By Harrison W |

Herd about this place from a friend. With so many good restaurants in SF I was a little skeptical to try a place so off the radar. I must say that I am very happy I gave it a shot. Everything we ordered tasted fanatstic, The octopus, the handmade pasta and the pizza was all terrific. All the wine was very good and reasonably priced. I would highly recommend this restaurant for a great quality laid back meal.

Flawless, always

By Rodrigo P |

The menu is amazing, always including the freshest local ingredients, combined in very tasteful and interesting ways. Their menu is creative, their staff is smart and attentive, and the place looks beautiful. The neighborhood is always sunny too. Be sure to make a reservation because it can get busy. Try the strawberry shrub, the soft scramble, and the Gibraltar.

Amazing focaccia! So,so pizza

By Rosie B |

First off, this place is really beautiful! It is bright, open, and airy. The service is also great- my waiter was attentive and thoughtful. The focaccia was incredible - warm, fresh, soft - definitely the highlight! I got a Margherita pizza for my main course. It was ok, but lacked flavor (or salt?) perhaps. I would still come back here though because the prices were reasonable and it has a great ambiance.

Think I Ordered The Wrong Thing

By Iamalwayslost |

I came in for a fast dinner and expected the same as most all the other reviewers got. Did I come in on the wrong day or did I just order the wrong thing. I ordered wild scallop, lentil, baby carrot, pancetta, salsa verde. I got TWO yes TWO scallops at $13.00 each. Did anyone tell them that three makes a better composition on a plate. The baby carrots were cooked so long they were mushy. The lentils were so salty I had a difficult time eating them and gave up. Also the Lentils were somewhat spicy and now I know why. The first scallop I ate with the lentils and could not taste the scallop due to the overabundance of salt and strong spice. The second scallop I ate after clearing my pallet with copious amount of water. Oh that was a mistake, since the scallop was old and smelled and tasted terrible. Bring back the over spiced lentils. For $26.00 you would think I would have received an good amount of food on the plate and it would have been fresh. Very small portions.

Wonderful neighborhood Italian style gem

By mdgwind |

Piccino is wonderful, fresh Italian/California food. Delicious appetizers. Grilled octopus was tender and flavorful. Wish they didn't charge for bread, however; they charge $3 for two tiny pieces of focaccia and EVOO. Thin crust pizzas always so tasty. Grillled quail came with two small well-prepared birds. Apple-date cake and pear tartine were wonderful desserts but n the small side for $12 apiece. Dinner for four without alcohol was about $50 pp including tip.

GREAT FOR BRUNCH!

By Bicoastal2008 |

We have eaten here 5-6 times, but this was our first brunch. it did not disappoint. a number of good egg dishes and veggie fare. we love surroundings and parking is great.

Love me some creative Brunch

By tunasf |

Love this place--been here three times for brunch....only street parking which can be dicey. We always have one of the apps and a pastry basket which are always pleasant surprises. Drinks are always on the artisanal side with ingredients not necessarily familiar to us, but never disappointing. This time we tried the Pork Hash and Chicken salad and have tried the baked eggs, none of which disappointed. Service is always spot on and helpful when this picky eater wants to parse the menu for things she thinks she won't like! Portions are typically on the small side, thus the apps and pastry basket to supplement. A bit pricey for brunch as well is another consideration.

Classical italian with modern twists

By Gabriel H |

Piccino is located in a rapidly gentrifying area of San francisco, South of Market, in the Dogpatch neighborhood. The restaurant opens to a parking lot and is right next to a clothing store. The interior is casual, with an open kitchen, simple, modern tables and chairs and a bustling, lively clientele. The wait satff is also informal, and at times it is hard to tell who your waiter is. The menu provides a number of small plate options as well as some larger plates, srving as main dishes. The menu changes with the seasons, and sometimes based on what ingredients the chef finds. The chicken liver pate was excellent, while the sunchoke, yogurt and sunflower seed combo was unconventional and delightful. The seared octopus was as good as it gets, while the chiocciole was an interesting and less well known take on Italian pasta. The mushroom pasta was tasty, crispy, and light while the sea bass was perfectly prepared and nicely presented. A bottle of Garganega and an Aglianico made perfect pairing with the food. The spiced olive cake and the zeppole were shared by all and enjoyed with with a late harvest riesling.

Wish I could eat these every day!

By Latitude |

It has the open kitchen type of environment. It is always good to be able to see the kitchen and all the delicious things that happen in there Try the cauliflower minty greens with nuts, it made happy and hungry. ( I know!) I enjoyed the pizza very much. Anyone would.

Great Food Great Service

By NCJustMe |

We met a friend here for dinner and although it's out of the way a bit it's well worth the the effort. We shared 4 different plates of food and everything was wonderful from the reddish/cucumber/mint/peach salad to the pizza to the meat balls. Everything was great. The have a very good wine list and also a fun beer list. Truly enjoyed my meal the the whole atmosphere. Will differently go back next time I'm in SF.

Excellent fare in this warm SF up and coming 'hood

By SalsabyJake |

I met some friends here for dinner for the first time and really enjoyed the meal. Started with a glass of wine while waiting for friends to arrive. It is popular so we could only get a 5pm reservation. By the time we left, the place was packed. It is a homey environment with an open kitchen and tables all together in one big room. I classify a restaurant as "excellent" when I enjoy every morsel of every dish ordered and this was the case at Piccino. The flatbread pizzas were great, and we had some fantastic starters such as fried brussel sprouts and greens and a beef tartar that was wonderful on their home made crackers. The desserts were also special. One was a yogurt/goat cheese combo with an interesting flavor and the warm benoit typy donuts (called "zepole" on menu) were off the hook! Everything was pleasing and the service was quite good as well - one of the things that often derails a restaurant even when the food is great. I would definitely return to this spot - near the train station in the up and coming dogpatch area of SF!

Good food and pretentious wait staff

By D C |

There for lunch with two local friends. The menu is San Francisco trendy and fun. Food was great. We had pickled veggies as an app which were fun. I had an open face chicken salad sandwich which was all dark meat but delicious. The wait was a very snooty bay area food snob. He quickly judged me as an east coaster and started talking down to me. When the tude spread to one of my local friends she flamed him. Not sure he even realized . . . All in all great food in a lovely setting with self absorbed staff.

Disappointing

By Derek H |

Not a good experience. The midweek lunchtime was busy with customers suggesting that this restaurant is popular but you really do have to ask why. The food ranged from OK (pizzas) to poor (meat balls); the wine was hugely overpriced; and the attitude of staff left a lot to be desired. The 40 minutes it took from ‘order to plate’ was punctuated by visits from table staff who did their best to encourage us to drink and then order a second bottle of wine. With the huge margins charged on the wine here, we did wonder if this was a deliberate policy to promote revenue rather than serve the customers’ interests. An average $15 charged for a single glass of wine is outrageous and is a positive deterrent rather than an encouragement to try something different from the wine list. The proprietors would do well to sit down with all their employees – from front of house to kitchen – and re-appraise what is going on here, perhaps starting with the patronising attitude extended to visitors to the USA. Until they do I would recommend Piccinos only if you want a pizza and a beer.

Could do much better

By sowtonangel |

We took our British friends who live in San Francisco to Piccinos for lunch as a thank you for their hospitality. To be honest we wish we had gone elsewhere. Our friends had been here previously and raved about how good it had been, but were disappointed and embarrassed by our experience today. Upon arrival we were given the wine list, and we're taken aback by the cost of the wine - the most expensive we have encountered during our three week tour off California. We spent $44 on a very average Italian Chardonnay which the staff constantly kept pouring - assuming they wanted us to drink up quickly and order another. We didn't, although the food took over 40 minutes to arrive. Just before the main course did arrive we were offered a "gesture" of a bowl of soup - plus four spoons - as an apology for our long wait. Whilst we are good friends none of us fancied double/triple dipping into the one shared bowl of soup which we considered to be very unhygienic, so the soup was left untouched. We were also offered bread which we refused as the main course was promised to arrive imminently, but we were given some anyway. The main course finally arrived. My pizza bianco with anchovies arrived - without the anchovies. The pizza was swiftly removed and returned with anchovies placed on top, but cold and raw and not crisped as I would have preferred them. One other person had a pizza with sausage and onion which he reported to be fine. The other two diners chose the meatballs, and we're extremely disappointed. The texture was very soggy and the meatballs broke up into a sloppy mess. The tomato sauce was over-powering and spoilt the dish. This was apparently very different from our friends' previous experience of this dish. One of our party asked to see he wine list again to order a glass of red wine, but quickly changed his mind when he realised it was $15 A GLASS! The waitress merely retorted to us "this is California"! In a very patronising manner, clearly assuming we were all tourists, and walked off leaving us feeling insulted. We therefore asked for the bill and prepared to leave. On walking out to collect the car my husband mentioned to the waitress (who we later discovered was part-owner) that the comment she should have made was "Welcome to Piccinos". When she realised how bad our experience had been she came to the remaining three of us waiting at the table and apologised profusely for our bad experience, and her ill-judged comment. She kindly offered us a $75 gift certificate which our friends will use at some point in the future, and this will hopefully restore their faith in Piccinos.

Try the French Toast

By Diana A |

Had to write a review on this wonderful little restaurant in the dogpatch district of San Francisco. We were there for brunch on a Sunday and ordered the french toast. It's hard to describe how delicious they were. All the brunch items that we saw being served were beautifully presented and looked absolutely wonderful. I only go to the area during Christmas time to attend a local Warehouse Sale and this was my third time there. Looking forward to next years visit. Don't pass this place up.

Best food in Dogpatch

By BNK40 |

Piccino is informal and friendly with very good food at a reasonable price. The menu runs from pizza to fairly complex main dishes. There is a relatively small but well selected beer and wine list that is also reasonably priced.

Sunny Sophistication in Dogpatch

By rhopelain |

What a charming, cozy, sophisticated cafe. Dogpatch isn't where most of us would think of heading for a delightful, airy, setting straight out of Umbria, but turn onto a hidden, dead-end block of Minnesota Street and there it is. My wife and I met our daughter there for dinner the other night and sat at the counter surrounding the open kitchen. We started off sharing an amazing mushroom pizza. Each of us had a salad then a pasta for dinner all of which were as fresh as could be, and showcased bright flavors. There is nothing that I can say that is too extravagant for the quality of this simple Italian perfection. My only caveat, and it's not enough to ding a star from the rating, but a caution, is that hostess station is very friendly, but kind of chaotic. We ended up sitting about an hour after was estimated, and then we finally sat due to us keeping an eye on the situation. The upside is that they have a nice wine list to sample while you wait. But, go. It's more than worth the trek to Dogpatch.

My whole family loves this restaurant!

The food is Italian filtered through a California sensibility so it is artfully prepared with attention to detail as well as some new twists on old classics. We cook and eat a LOT of Italian food and have travelled in Italy extensively, emphasizing food and wine so we have a little background from which to speak. We love this casual place. It fits a niche of which there are a few other like restaurants in SF. Another reviewer mentioned Delfina which is an apt comparison, but this is more casual. We just wish it were closer to our neighborhood so we could make it a regular. It is worth seeking out. My children love the thin crust pizza and they have made pizza eating their life's work ( just kidding, but any parent will know what I'm talking about!) They truly appreciate the fine ingredients and well crafted pizza offerings. My teenage children beg to go back there with us, and any time your teenagers want to be with you.....
