beautiful presentation of excellent food

By Julie E |

I ordered a salad with salmon on it. It was served with lime vinaigrette dressing on the side. The dressing was delicious. The salad was so beautiful when served, as each separate topping was organized into it's own section. Everything on the salad was fresh and delicious. I will return for many more salads! I can't say much for the ambiance. The staff there is outstanding.

Very good food and close to S.A. airport

By AVGTXN |

Tuesday night. What a nice little restaurant tucked into a shopping center and sharing a parking lot with Denny's. The food is upscale. My salad was large and fresh, and my companion's pork chop was huge and flavorful. Another plus is you're under 15 minutes to the airport. Service was attentive and fast. I'd definitely eat here again before catching a flight.

Great sandwiches

By eoneillaz |

Went for lunch, great sandwiches. It was too hot to sit outside but they have a nice large patio. I got food togo but the people were friendly and the decor was nice. During cooler months I can definitely see sitting outside for lunch.

Very nice

By Nora F |

This was my first visit although I've been wanting to try for quite awhile. Visited the Blanco @410 location for dinner. Really good food and nice atmosphere. It is tucked away in a little shopping area but definitely worth looking for. I had the tortilla soup which was plenty for me for dinner and delicious. Just the right spice with plenty of chicken. And they had lemon posset for dessert (hard to find posset in SA). Can't wait to go back for another meal.

Perfect dinner salads

By Ann R |

We were in a mood for dinner salads and discovered that Pickinins had many offerings. Always been for lunch before but dinner was a lovely relaxed experience. Service was excellent and the salads were wonderful. I had the Cobb, which includes grilled chicken ($12) and my husband had the Greek with added grilled chicken ($9 + $3 for chicken). Neither of us could finish the large salad and I usually concentrate on the toppings and leave some of the lettuces. This time the varied lettuces were so crisp and fresh that I left some chicken (no reflection on wonderful moist grilled chicken - I just ran out of room in a very happy tummy). I heard some around us raving about the soup and the sweet potato fries. This restaurant will now be on our dinner list. BTW, unlimited iced tea was full of flavor and only $1.50 - a bargain.

Nice patio area

Very nice staff - attentive and friendly. I had the Fabulous (roast beef) sandwich, chicken tortilla soup and lemonade. They gave me rum cake for my birthday -nice.

Strange but good

By Robert F |

Have you ever questioned how and why a restaurant survives, and even succeeds, when important components of success seem to be missing? In this instance, the name is weird, the location is obscure, and the staff is not very personable. In their favor, however, the food was very good. All I can imagine is that they have a big happy hour business or some other source of revenue. We were there at lunch. Upon entering, we were informed by an unsmiling woman behind the counter, "You order here and then get your own drinks. Table service doesn't start until 2 p.m." So we stood awkwardly by the bar and looked at the menu, ordering two soups and a salad to share. The soups were very tasty, and the salad huge. We took some of it home. I would eat there again, but I won't expect to be welcomed.

Some delish sandwiches

By OhhNoo2150 |

I attend UTSA so I'm usually looking for some good eats in the area; I was going to go to Sapporo's sushi for a late lunch when I found out they were closed until dinner time, I noticed this restaurant next door so I decided to give it a go. I was not disappointed, there are many options on the menu I settled on trying the Pulled Pork sandwich (my friends call me a porka rican because I love pork) it's so very well spiced with a little tangy coleslaw on top which mixes just right with the sweet spicy pork. The bun is just right nice and soft with a little crunch from the toasting of the inside. I suggest getting the sweet potato fries cause I mean they're sweet potato fries...come on now. I've been back several times and tried another sand which but it's so hard to switch up when you find something this good.

Hidden gem

By Time4Pizza |

My wife saw a story on tv about this restaurant. It exceeded our expectations in all regards. Portions were great, price was fair, and service was very good. You wouldn't know by the outside but the atmosphere and food were perfect. Will go back often.

POBLANO SOUP!

By TexasZs |

The soup, sandwiches, and salads are wonderfully crafted. All the flavored just wok together. The poblano soup is somewhat spicy, but the kind of spicy that you can't stop eating. We also enjoy their burger and French fries! Great place for lunch and casual dinner.

The must get their employees to write these reviews.

By KraZynTn |

We were headed to the pizza place across the parking lot, but it was closed. The restaurant looked busy so knew it had to be good. We ordered the pastrami sandwich with sweet potato fries. We were told everything was made from scratch, so expected good food. The grilled bread was somewhat burnt and they made the sweet potato fries twice since they burnt the first order. The second order was not any better. We also had the cheesesteak but it was mostly lettuce and fresh onions, not grilled. The home fries that came with this sandwich also had a burnt flavor. We paid twenty dollars for just two sandwiches and the fries and was not pleased. Maybe we should have looked around when we arrived , but you walk in place your orders, get a glass with a napkin, fill your own drinks and find your own table. People getting up to refill their drinks kept bumping into everyone else that were seated. It was very cramped and one could hear everyone trying to talk above everyone else. I cannot recommend or will be back.

Great South African Food

By phinneasbec |

Charming place inside in an eyesore of a strip mall out by the airport. Warm welcome once inside. Red peppers stuffed w/ goat cheese were a great starter, and the roasted poblano soup was delightful. I doubt that is truly South African, but it was balanced and not over the top w/ cream. The curry dish was an experience - the diner adds optional side servings of chutney, banana, cilantro, and coconut. I thought the banana would ruin it, but the flavors and texture worked great together. Not pretty to look at, but a delightful discovery. Portion size was a little too big. And, while there were some decent S. African wines on the menu one criticism is that the selection of them is disappointingly limited. I'd push for more of them and fire the distributor is s/he refuses to deliver. Worth a stop.

Unique, family-owned restaurant with awesome food!!!

By Kiminsa |

I moved away from San Antonio 2 years ago and one of the things I miss most is Picnikins. So when I returned to visit family and friends my first stop was their new location on Hausman. I picked up poblano soup and the trio (salsa, guacamole, and chili con queso). I bookended my trip by hitting the original Blanco Rd location on my last day. I hit the high spots with the cream of poblano pepper soup again and their fabulous chicken salad sandwich. Although the food is amazing and always super fresh, it's the attention to quality and detail of the owners, Cheryl and Andre Bezuidenhout, that make this place so special. They know their customers and they are devoted to them. If you live in San Antonio, you're lucky because you can eat there often. If you're visiting, you simply must try them out!

Definitely Worth Trying The...

By TallyHoHoHo |

A business associate of mine took me here for lunch the other day. I wouldn't have known this place existed, as it was out of the way, off a road I very seldom travel these days. I was pleasantly surprised. Nice ambiance. Kind of like like an upscale Panera Bread. Nice dinnerware, urban-modern atmosphere, servers are friendly, comfortable booths. A little stark, but still welcoming. I would recommend the egg salad sandwich and tomato soup, but I t looks like everything on the menu would be good. My friend raves about this as the next best thing to slice bread. I'd say she was right. The food is homemade. No ore-fab soups or sandwiches. Not much more expensive than other sandwich places, and the quality is much better.

Found a new place for lunch

By TexasTravler45 |

My wife and I are always looking for new places to eat given our new diet. We were in the vicinity and she mentioned we shound try Picnikins, she said they have salads and snadwiches and other stuff we eat. You order at the counter from a very extensive menu. I choose the turkey and swiss on rye bread and she ordered a cobb salad. The place was very crowded (always a good sign) but there is a lot of seating both inside and out on the covered patio. the food arrived and the portions were very large and looked fantasitic. I had homemade potatoe chips and excellent sandwich which I took half of it home. my wife's salad was excellent, with red tomatoes, beautiful salad greens and chicken strips which was a bit of a disappoint since they were very dry. except for that we have a great new place for lunch. I think next time I will have a half sandwich and a cup of soap. My wife wants to work most of the rest of the menu. This place has been around here for several years but we seemed to have missed it. See you soon.

Charming!

By LMO_Texas |

We love picnikins! We have been there several times for weekend lunch. It's hard to decide what sandwiches or burgers to order because everything is so delicious! Ask for their homemade sangria - Yum! We went for dinner on Valentine's Day and were lucky enough to experience their wine pairing prix fixe menu. Every bite was superb and the wine pairings were spot on. Don't skip the lemon bars for dessert! Courtney does a fantastic job managing the place and makes certain every need is being catered to.

Lunch and dinner

By TexasZs |

Go anytime, everything is fantastic! Sweet potato fries are crispy, salads are huge and fresh, curry is homemade, and they have a nice wine selection. Eat local!

Cute and good!

By NicoleDelaune |

Went here in December before one of my finals. It is kinda cute and very good! A little on the pricey side for a college student but well worth the extra money!

Menu with a good variety

By 210SATX |

Really like to go here and sit outdoors to eat. They have a very nice indoors too. The menu has a good variety of entrees and several good burgers. With a good salad, some of the appetizers will fill you up too. The salads are always good and fresh with just the right amount dressing. They also have several yummy desserts. Wait staff are always very friendly and attentive.

Fresh Salads and Sandwiches

By Kinitra B |

Great food. The salad are hearty, fresh, and of excellent quality as well as incredibly flavorful. If you don't want a salad, their burgers are juicy, filling, and served on fresh-baked bread. Their french fries are excellent as well. The ambiance is great as well as the service. I have gone to the location near North Park Mall as well as the newest location at University Heights.

Appearances can be deceiving

By Shelly W |

So, my oldest daughter and I were in San Antonio for the day and family wanted us to bring Dough back... we didn’t want Dough both meals & it was raining outside, so we wanted somewhere close. This place was across parking lot and had some good reviews, so we went in! GREAT choice!! I am a soup lover, so I got a cup of the poblano soup💗😋 and I can NOT make you understand how good it was! Daughter was torn between “the orchard” and roast beef, so I told her, if she got one, I’d get the other.. I’m usually not a roast beef sandwich fan, but this one is DELICIOUS!! Having said that, the Orchard was my favorite... turkey, bacon.., yeah!! SOO enjoyed our meal and will go back next time I’m in SA!!

Huge sandwiches

By AVGTXN |

Saturday lunch. Wide variety of sandwiches that are huge. Barely able to finish the turkey. The homemade potato chips or the sweet potato fries are great choices to add. Worth a return visit for out-of-the-ordinary options.

Great lunch place

By Diedre C |

Loved this little place - very friendly, clean and the food came quickly. I had the SW chicken sandwich and it was awesome! It had roasted poblano peppers and a great sauce. I don't normally get excited about French fries but they were great, too. Homemade and not greasy. I'll be back.

Good Food and Service

By Mare1599 |

I ordered the chicken salad sandwich with a bowl of poblano soup. The soup is EXCELLENT! The chicken salad was very good as well. The only disappointment was the cola from the machine.

Excellent Surprise

By clsm929 |

I had not heard of this small chain prior to friends inviting me to join them at this lunch only cafe. I was pleasantly surprised with the speed of service and freshness/taste of the food. While my friends enjoyed their hamburgers, I had a pastrami on rye with cheese that is as good as I have had in a long time. The price is very reasonable, with friendly staff. We arrived a bit early, but it filled quickly and the noise level rose. I will return another time and sample one of their other sandwiches.

A place of contrasts

By PrairieCastaway |

Fresh ingredients and interesting flavors. Had the poblano soup, salads and sandwich. Very casual setting in mini-mall where you order at counter and food is brought to your table, but the food is upscale. I could come here everyday.

Disappointed but it was the servers fault

By ABE49 |

I have been wanting to go here for some time and finally got around to it. Stopped in and it was a ghost town. Waiter was nice and gave me a menu that only had sandwiches and salads. I thought it was odd and they must have cut their menu way,way down. Had a decent smoked turkey sandwich with sprouts, etc and totally dried up old potato chips. Afterwards, I asked if they had any desserts. Out pops a while new menu....the DINNER menu. I asked what time they served dinner and John said 5pm. I said so I was 10 minutes early and YOU decided I wanted lunch? He said he was sorry but I wasn't happy. How dumb is that? Thanks but I will go next door to The Lost Cajun if I am around that area from now on. Bye.

Will go back!

By toya h |

This restaurant was very busy during Tuesday lunchtime (takeout orders and dining in) but we were still able to get our food quickly. There’s indoor and outdoor seating with umbrellas. There was a really good selection of sandwiches and salads. The chicken tortilla soup was fantastic.

Good food, good atmosphere

By Lv2rdtrip |

I decided to eat at Picnikins for lunch while waiting for a violin lesson at Terra Nova. I’m glad I did, while there was a decent wait and the place was very full, the food was delicious and the atmosphere cozy and very café-like. The egg salad sandwich is made on site and is excellent. Many of diners appeared to be regulars and there were a large number of families present. The service is slow, but then this isn’t the type of establishment that you go in to rush in and rush out. Drink a glass of wine and enjoy lunch!

Get the grilled chicken

By SonnyBeach1 |

Lots of people are touting this place so my wife and I finally went. Good outdoor dining if it's cool enough...there isn't complete shade, which won't hold up for most people in a South Texas summer. The grilled chicken sandwich was excellent, the cheeseburger was average and very overpriced at more than ten bucks! Fries were some of the best in town, along with those at Tucker's and La Tuna. Two complaints: no salt and pepper on any of the tables (and not particularly attentive service to correct that) and a general feel that this is for nouveau San Antonians who probably don't realize, or care, that there are hundreds of places with better food at better prices. Heard one clownette talk about her office on "Sahn Pedro." It's San, baby. Overall, not bad...darn good fries and decent otherwise. But, pound for pound, this is no heavyweight contender based on what we sampled.

Awesome lunch

By Lianne J |

Came here for lunch, it was amazing! Nathan, the server/bartender had fantastic suggestions and is truly informative and attentive..you can tell he loves what he does! Fresh ingredients, amazing lunch AND dinner menu ( the lunch menu changes for dinner). Love this place!!

The Best Upscale Restaurant in Suburban San Antonio

By JamesGang12803 |

The University Hts location is a culinary gem with great food, carefully prepared by chef Briana. The Black Angus Beef Tenderloin steak is always cooked to perfection and the fish specials that are frequently featured are exquisite. The soups are prepared fresh daily with the Roasted Poblano being my absolute favorite. We are so fortunate to have this fine restaurant located near UTSA, the San Antonio medical center and best yet - near our neighborhood!

Nice patio outside

By Susan M |

This place is tucked away in a shopping area off the corner of Blanco Rd and loop 410. THere is a pretty good size patio are to enjoy the nice weather while you have lunch or dinner. The inside is about the same size and gives you a feeling that you are having lunch at a friends house. The menu has a very good selection. http://www.picnikinspatiocafe.com/menu-lunch.aspx I had the tuna salad in a bowl on field greens with avocado and it was very good but the portion of the tuna was not very generous, not even a full scoop. My friend had the soup and 1/2 sandwich combo and she said it was very good. The prices are very reasonable and the service is fast. During lunch 11 -2 you order at the counter, they give you a number and they bring it to you. At dinner, they wait on you at the table. This is a very nice arrangement since the place has a line out the door at lunch. It is very quick and efficient.

Great for Lunch

By NA N |

This difficult to find location is worth searching for. I nav'd to it to meet a friend for lunch and it was worth the frustration. Great salads and soups and sandwiches. Everything is fresh, portions are generous and the service is top notch. I've visited three times. I'll be back,

Delicious food, cozy atmosphere...tucked into a little strip center.

By RockportTourist |

When you pull up, it's unassuming. Inside, it is quaint and crisp. The roasted poblano soup was delicious. Others had the seasonal soup- butternut squash- and served compliments on the dish. We had a 10 top and the entrees came out sporadically. Salmon first. (Everyone enjoyed it.) Salads next, steaks, then the pork chop. Surprisingly, my steak was cold but was flavorful. The green beans and Brussel sprouts were AMAZING!! I couldn't give as many stars as I wanted due to the temperature but one has to think it may be die to the size of the party. The pork chop was warm and delicious. I would definitely try it again!!

filling food at a reasonable price

By mymexicaneyes |

OMG! really? the "cup" of soup of tomato basil was more like a "giant cup" of soup…..large and tasty! the half sandwich of their The Mediterranean Vegetarian Our house made hummus, Greek cucumber salad, feta, and kalamata olives in a whole grain pita bread. was filling and super tasty. Three women shared an order of their handout french fries……and, i discovered that J Lohr made a Riesling that is NOT sweet!!! highly recommended for lunch….can't wait to go back and try their dinner menu

large, fresh salads

By Julie E |

I've eaten here several times. Each time the food has been very fresh, and this time was no different. The dressing today was nearly tasteless. When offered salt and pepper, I said no because I had not previously needed it. But, today I felt the dressing had no flavor, and probably would have benefited from having salt in it. Other than that, the salad was large, cold and fresh.

Great sandwiches, great salads, great everything!

By chrisesatx |

We love this place. Nice place to sit outside of good weather. Great menu... Lots of options and fair price.... Cheaper and better quality than Cheesecake Factory. Great place.

Great food for great value

By Tony R |

This is a casual but very good restaurant that is a little hard to find but worth the drive. The menu is varied with good comfort food choices as well as some unique selections with touches of several countries. Dessert are not to skipped.

Great lunchin' place!

By Debra W |

Mighty tasty sandwiches! Come early for lunch - this place fills up fast! Soups, sandwiches, salads, homemade chips! My hubby loves the Sunshine Sammy - egg salad, bacon, lettuce and tomatoes! The chicken salad sandwich was a hit with me! Come for dinner - they offer different specialities and have some different wines to choose from!!

Top Notch Food and Service

By JimmyL60365 |

This is a little out of the way restaurant in a strip mall, but the food and service were outstanding. The place is nicely decorated, nothing fancy and the evening we went to dinner it was seat yourself. There is a good beer and wine selection, no mixed drinks. Service was very, very good - from the greeting when we walked in until the check the service was just right. The food is standout great. I had their Southwest soup and the meatloaf. The meatloaf was not the diner variety, it was an interesting and delicious concoction covered in sauteed mushrooms and leaks and served with freshly steamed vegetables. As I write this review I'm torn as whether or not to check the "one of the best meals" button. I decided not to, but the meal I had was really, really close to being in that category. In terms of price, it was comparable or less than a Chili's for an experience that was much better.

Best Lunch!

By TexasZs |

Salad, soup or sandwich you can't go wrong here. It does get crowded so go early. Nice little patio in the parking lot. Everything is exceptionally great! Prices are very reasonable for the portion size. Go to for lunch all the time!

Very good sandwiches!

By Capt_Wyatt |

Unique sandwiches are the norm here. Make sure to get the Poblano soup...marvelous! Homemade chips come with the order. I love the roast beef with alfalfa sprouts. Great spot for lunch, but come early cause the parking and seating go fast!

Hidden Gem: Awesome food. Reasonably priced.

By Kellycomm |

My cousin had attended an event catered by Picnikins and suggested we go there for a casual dinner while visiting San Antonio. It was a Wednesday dinner and wines were half priced. Short but excellent wine list. We had some questions about food preparation and the owner Jeff came out of the kitchen and answered questions and then prepared special entrees to avoid food allergies. The ladies had salads and the guys had salmon. Everyone loved the food. The tomato bisque was incredible. Definitely a hidden gem.

Great food and staff

By Traveling G |

I went for lunch today with a friend, both of us had only been to the Blanco location. The food was great and the gentleman that was taking orders was very friendly. Wait staff was helpful and smiled the entire time. Will be back soon!

Consistently Good

By Aunttabby |

I have been taking a group here for a,number of years for lunch and everyone always praises their selection. Favorites are the Vermont Salad with either chicken or salmon, the burger and any of the chicken sandwiches. Everything is always fresh and tasty and a generous portion so come hungry. For dessert the Lemon Posset is a favorite, tangy and creamy with the perfect accompaniment of thin ginger cookies.

Very nice concept

By Tony R |

Picnikins combines a casual but very nice atmosphere with a varied menu of delicious and creative dishes. Some are traditional favorites, some with a twist, and others are unique for this price level in a restaurant. But the most important factor is the taste. YUM. The service and presentation are great as well. For a neighborhood-styled patio restaurant, you can't go wrong.

A surprise gem

By Kenny S |

I arrived in San Antonio for a work conference, and was not expecting much from the local restaurants. I was very pleasantly surprised by Picnikins cafe which offers an array of sandwiches, burgers, and soups. I had the Grilled Chicken Club, with jalapeño added on. It was AMAZING. Everyone else in our party really enjoyed their meals as well, I've heard the Poblano soup is one not to be missed on my next visit. Service and atmosphere were great and charming as well. My wife also frequently travels to the area for work and I will insist she stop by on her next visit!!!

Very good!

By Breanna P |

This place was very tasty, just not what we expected! I was expecting a casual little sandwich shop. When we walked in, it appears to be a pretty fancy sandwich shop with waiters and waitresses, wine, etc. It's a bit pricey, but everything was really good!

Great lunch place

By Phil R |

First time to try this place, but not the last. Chicken Salad sandwich was fresh made and the soup was also homemade. Plenty of parking, lots of seating, indoor and outdoor. For some reason there is no salt or pepper??? Salads looked good too.

Very, very nice!

By Mona S |

Our first clue that Picnikins has a confident kitchen -- the absence of salt and pepper shakers on the tables! I think this started as a lunch place, but our dinner certainly pleased. Everything was indeed delicately seasoned with a confident hand. The roasted poblano pepper soup was smooth and tasty, just smoky and spicy enough to get us ready for the entrees. The chicken piccata was perfect (comes with roasted new potatoes and julienned veggies). My companion had the signature beef curry (comes with toppings like coconut, parsley and bananas!), which was likewise delicious. For dessert, an African pudding: also delicious, but an overpriced curiosity. High points for presentation, portion size and service.

First time

By L H |

This is an “off the beaten path” eatery a block from the IH10 frontage Rd. off Hausman. It is in a small center behind the McCombs Toyota business. They have a small parking lot, inside booth and table seating and outdoors table seating. There was a short wait to order as you enter. The menu is posted on the wall and easy to read. Once you order, the food is brought out to you. It was steadily busy while we were there and seemed to be popular even those this was our first visit and first time of hearing of this place. We ordered a Roast Beef & Provolone on buttermilk white bread ($10.50), a Turkey Breast & Swiss on Wheat grain bread ($9.50) and an ice tea ($2.50). The food was served timely and everything was very fresh and good portion and very good. The sandwiches came with homemade chips which were not greasy at all and delicious. They offer, soups, salads, and sandwiches. The noise level was not bad considering there were quite a few customers. The only down side to the visit was the lady’s restroom smelled horrible. Otherwise a nice visit and we will return when in the area again.

Favorite local lunch spot

By TexasZs |

We love the atmosphere. Very well decorated. It gets crazy busy during lunch but the wait and kitchen staff do an amazing job. It's always clean when we go. The ultimate sandwich and poblano soup are always winners. The sandwich is piled high with turkey. On occasion the soup can be a little spicy. The salad portions are huge and really fresh. They also have a great burger. Be sure to get the sweet potato fries. They also win points from us because they serve local beer and have a great wine selection.

Amazing Burgers and Fries

By Becky60956 |

I am addicted to Picnikins fabulous burgers and fries! Have been back several times since discovering how wonderful they are. I usually go there for lunch for their delicious salads and soups. We will definitely be going more often for dinner. They have everything from divine $10 burgers and fries to beef, chicken, fish, and lamb entrees. This is a real gem of a restaurant with excellent customer service and friendly owners.

Delicious salad, visually appealing

By Julie E |

For lunch, you order at the counter, then they bring your food to your table. I have only eaten the Cobb salad there, but several times. The salad always looks fantastic, though not always in the same way. They alway taste fresh. There can be a line right at noon, but they get through it quickly. Even though there is a place to get your own drinks, someone comes around to refill them for you. Service is fast, and attentive. This is one of my favorite lunch places, though I must say it's not cheap. Salads start at around $10 and go up from there.

Good Quality Food

By Lorraine C |

My husband and I frequent this restaurant for lunch. Last night we had the pleasure of going for dinner with 2 other couples. The food and service was outstanding. Salads are always good and fresh and BIG!!!!! Greek salad is my husbands favorite. The salmon entrée was flavorful and cooked to perfection. The special was pecan crusted drum which was very moist. And a nice portion. Can not say enough good things about the poblano soup. The best I've ever had. Owner is super nice and always takes the time to say hello. The rum cake is also some of the best I have ever tasted.

GREAT food, casual atmosphere, wonderful staff!!

By DeniseS |

Close enough to walk to, we chose this restaurant for our first dinner upon arrival in San Antonio. Greeted by the owner, Geoff Bezuidenhout (we didn't know that at the time) with a smile and a "yes, we serve GLUTEN FREE items," we chose a seat by the window. We were hooked! This charming restaurant has a wide-range of delicious foods (we went back two days later and tried some other offerings), great wines, and if you're lucky, like we were, inspiring conversations with the staff, Alison and Paul & Geoff. Recommended: chicken tortilla soup, poblano pepper soup, pork chop, lemon dessert, San Antonio Trio and wine. There is outside seating (for nice days & evenings) as well as a UTSA-themed kids' play area. It's clean, fresh, family run and wonderful!

Great place for salads and burgers.

By Jess F |

This place is a great place for burgers and salads. I tried the poblano soap and it had a weird tangy taste. I did not like it. I ordered the Vermont salad and it was delicious. It comes in a big and hearty bowl. Big bowl. I could only eat half of it. My friend had the chicken sandwich and she likes it. I tried the fries and not the best fries. Overall okay. Great service.

Great food and workspace

By Melissa P |

Some colleagues and I wanted to get together and do a little work, but also have lunch. The food here is superb. I had the highly recommended poblano soup, with a southwestern salad. Everything was really delicious. One of my colleagues is lactose intolerant, but thought the poblano soup would be okay until she got it and tried it. The waitress graciously substituted a tortilla soup at no charge and no hassle. To me, that is the mark of a good restaurant. The wait staff is really attentive, even though you order at a counter. Once lunch was finished, we stayed at the restaurant and did some work, which was perfect. Again, the staff continued to check on us and make sure we had whatever we needed. I will definitely come here again if I am in the area.

Great soups, great for a Saturday afternoon lunch

By Bigrey6306 |

Live around the corner from this new location, and had to try it. Went with my wife on a Saturday afternoon. There were only about 2 other customers at the time so we were seated quickly. Unfortunatly there was a mix up and no one waited on us for at least 10 minutes. When they did realize their mistake, we were given 2 free soups to sample while they put in our order. I was a little upset, but the tasty soup quickly made up for it. I ordered a burger and fries, which were very good and cooked perfectly. My wife had a sandwich and it was equally tasty. We have gone back 2 times since and the food has always been good as well as the service. We are glad to have a nice casual place to eat in our neighborhood. Oh and the prices are very reasonable.

excellent salad, very attentive staff

By Julie E |

The chef salad was so beautiful and tasty. I asked for vinegar as a dressing, rather than a vinaigrette. They brought Balsamic vinegar which was superb on the salad. At lunch you order at the counter, then they deliver your food. You get your own drink, however, their staff refills your drink every 10 minutes or so. Their waitstaff is excellent!! They have an interesting menu, especially for dinner. I'd eat here again.

Very pleasant surprise!

By Schmeltj |

My wife suggested we try this place and I was not enthusiastic. Thought it would be some sort of dainty salad bar. Had to apologize to her! Salads are very well done and hearty. Tortilla soup is some of the best I've had. Brothy and full of ingredients. Sides are very good as well. Great wine selection. Highly recommend!

Good service from nice people, but food and atmosphere not memorable

By Amy B |

We had a business dinner at Picnickins Patio Cafe, and I have to say the staff did an excellent job with our table of 10 or so people. They made sure we always had our food and drink and did not lose their cool with the big group. That said, I had a hard time remembering what it was I had ordered at Picnickins (it was a Southwest salad with chicken). The food was fine, but nothing special or memorable. Among the starters we shared, the calamari was horrific (and I'd like to know who in our group of New Englanders decided to try the Texas calamari), while the zucchini chips were excellent. The atmosphere is also bland; it could be any restaurant in any city in the world. This isn't necessarily a problem, but if the food isn't excellent then I'd at least like an interesting ambiance. I don't see any reason to seek out Picnikins for a future meal.

Worth looking for...

We are visiting San Antonio and looking for local eateries. This cafe is a bit off the main road but worth finding. The decor is cool blues and greens. You order at the counter at lunch and they deliver it when ready. I had the pastrami & Swiss and Dan had the blue cheese burger, both served with chips and both very good. The serve yourself soda was Stubborn craft soda made in Austin. I had lemon berry acai and Dan had black cherry. They also serve beer and wine. One of the servers offered us a taste of their roasted poblano pepper soup...smooth and creamy and very good, especially as I am not much for eating anything with the word pepper in the title. Salads were also available. In warmer weather there is a patio for additional seating. The dinner menu is different from the lunch menu. We would eat here again on our next trip.

Very Nice

Great place for both casual and a bit more upscale food in a comfortable but very nicely decorated space. While the soups, salads and appetizers are delicious, don't fill up there. They have wonderful entrees as well... and save room for dessert.

Fantastic Soups, Sandwiches and Salads!

By William V |

Today was my 4th visit to Picnikins Patio Cafe and the food, service and presentation is always wonderful! Today's visit we had the Tomato Basil Soup and the Mediterranean Vegetarian Pita and the Chicken Tortilla Soup and the Turkey Breast Sandwich. the flavors of the soups and sandwiches were so good again, the service was prompt and the presentations were beautiful.

Wonderful lunch surprise

By Phyllis H |

Our son took us to Picnikins patio cafe for lunch. It is very casual. When you walk in, there are menu's for you to review and then you order at the counter. I had Tomato Basil soup and a Vermont Salad. My husband had the poblano soup and a Greek Salad. Our son had the ultimate sandwich on marble rye. My tomato basil soup was outstanding. It was thick but not too thick. The flavor was excellent. My salad was huge and wonderful. It had apples, cranberries, feta , pecans and greens with a maple dressing. My husband's soup was delicious ( I had a taste) and his salad was also huge. It was fresh and loaded with olives, tomatoes, greens and cucumbers. Our son's sandwich was great. It had turkey, bacon, lettuce and tomato served with fries which were crisp and fresh cut. The only problem with this restaurant is how popular it is so go early or be prepared to be patient. It is worth it.

Good, large sandwiches

Saturday lunch. Although there was no heat, we were able to enjoy a variety of soups and sandwiches. Sandwiches are very large.

Good food, nice waitress, terrible manager

By Anne C |

I've had wonderful catering from this restaurant on the job, so was looking forward to an evening out with friends. The ambience is quite "day time" (doesn't scream fine dining), but the menu is very nice and the food was delicious. The waitress was very friendly, and extremely helpful with my gluten free needs. Like the other reviewers, I recommend the poblano soup (yummy, and not too spicy, if that's a concern). Everything was great until it came time to pay. Paying the bill took nearly an hour! Their computer link was down. Instead of phoning in our charge, as a normal merchant would do in this situation, they held us hostage while they took a tech support call, trying to fix the computer. The manager was brusque, and never reappeared after creating this situation, leaving it to the poor waitress to apologize. My friends found out later their card had been charged five times. Even though the dinner was nice, I don't think I'd go back. If the manager had made any effort to apologize, or maybe comp the wine or desserts, I might have been okay with it, but she really didn't seem to care. Very disappointing.

Good Casual Sandwich Place

By CaliTexan22 |

We wanted a change from the franchise chain lunch places and tried this out. The menu is heavy with sandwiches, salads and burgers. My wife and I each had the soup (poblano pepper / tortilla) and 1/2 sandwich (roast beef / Mediterranean veggie wrap) combo. It was all fresh and tasty. About $24, including tip.

A cut above the average fast food joint

This is the nicest “fast food” restaurant I’ve ever visited. The food was very good and the atmosphere was very present. But how many such places offer draft beer and nice selection of wines? I had the Roasted Poblano Soup (spicy, but not too hot, and flavorful) and a half Orchard sandwich (not sure about apple slices on a sandwich – take my word for it, it’s great).

Not Your Average "Deli"

By Deb B |

Calling this place a Deli is an understatement. Yes, they have sandwiches, soups, and salads, but not like any you've had before. My favorite is the "Fabulous", a roast beef sandwich with a horseradish sauce that is so amazing. During lunch they get really busy; you order at a counter and they bring you your food. I have not had dinner there but understand they wait on you at a table and it's a different menu. They also have beer and wine. Great little place and my go-to for lunch.

Love love love

Food was super amazing! I got the soup and 1/2?sandwich orchard sandwich lightly toasted with a cup of poblano soup! The girl at the counter Allayna was super friendly and suggested items for us to try since this was our first time here! Also you can sign up for when they do special dinners, since they are no longer open for dinner.

Yum Oh!

This little place is so good. I get the gourmet turkey sandwich with poblano soup. The food is always fresh tasting and wholesome. They are definitely not stingy on the portioning. The atmosphere is great and the service is amazing and fast!

POBLANO SOUP!

By TexasZs |

The soup, sandwiches, and salads are wonderfully crafted. All the flavored just wok together. The poblano soup is somewhat spicy, but the kind of spicy that you can't stop eating. We also enjoy their burger, house made chips, sweet potato fries and don't get me started on the curry off of the dinner menu! Best curry we have had since visiting India and it comes with all of the Indian trimmings to make each bite unique. Great place for lunch and casual dinner. Must visit!

What a great lunch place!

We tried a little something different and new. And oh boy, we were not disappointed! They offer fresh food; we didn't leave hungry! They also have a military discount. And for UTSA students, they have a discount! This is going to be a great girls day out lunch place!

Outstanding restaurant!

By DTownElizabeth |

Ate lunch here every day this week, and everything I had was great! I am going to try to get their Roasted Poblano Soup recipe...it was amazing! The Southwest Chicken sandwich was also excellent. The only suggestions would be an additional cash register to take orders during the lunch rush. The friendly person working the front handled the long lines with efficiency and grace, but for people with short lunch breaks the best option is to call it in so it is ready when you get there. Next time I go back I will try them for dinner!

Don't miss this gem!

Locally owned by a family from South Africa, this little restaurant has excellent lunch specials and nightly dinner menu. The food is amazing. We have never been disappointed but especially love the poblano pepper soup.
