Friendly atmosphere, nice selection of beers, not too busy at lunchtime. Typical American variant on British pub-food, often served by Australians. Fish and chips, cornish pasties and shepherds pie are all tasty treats. Guinness, Boddingtons and Newcastle Brown among the featured mainstay brews.

Had a large family gathering for a birthday at this pub. The staff were most helpful and accomodating from the moment we arrived until we left. The food was typically English and was great value and delicious. We stayed for the quiz which was very entertaining and great fun. This pub offers great value and I would highly recommend a visit.

Fish and Chips were good. Nothing remarkable, but it's pretty hard to screw up fried food. The waiter/bartender was unnecessarily rude.

In over 25 years of living in the States, it took the Pig and Whistle to feed us the best Fish and Chips this side of the Atlantic. Two large pieces of battered fish! A true English style pub with no airs and graces, we visited two times during our short stay in San Francisco. Try the Steak and Mushroom Pie! Very reasonable prices, mostly under $10, quality pub food and generous portions. We still talk about it! A mention for Chris the barman who was the best!

Not far from where we stayed and close to the Trader Joe's we went to so we walked by often. We did not eat but were told by other patrons it was good pub grub. A local for sure if not a local institution. Very friendly. I loved the ESB!!!

Was introduced to Pig & Whistle by my son who went to nearby USF. Many of the patrons are USF students and at least one professor from the UK. It's a simple pub with a good offering of pub food which is not only inexpensive but quite good. For those who are wondering about their fish and chips, well, they are closest to what one would find in the UK. None of the choppy pieces of fish that one gets at American restaurants. No. Theirs consists of two huge pieces of fish (one whole cut in two) with chips (potato wedges). It is a bargain. The shepherd's pie is massive with loads of ground meat, carrots, and peas covered with a lovely mashed potato covering. The Cornish pasty is definitely not authentic. It has good filling (I believe it's the same as the shepherd's pie), however, the pastry is the frozen puff pastry and not the typical homemade type of dough. They even offer small bites for those who just want a bit of a snack to go with their drinks. All of them (e.g. calamari rings, stuffed mushrooms, Cornish pasty) are excellent value with huge portions and are very tasty. And as for the beer one may choose from an extensive array of both domestic and foreign ales and lager. They even offer 1/2 pints for those who do not wish to drink a full pint. Atmosphere is homey and congenial as the bartenders know who the regulars are (and there are many). Fantastic pub with lovely staff and food (that is why we patronize it at least once a month). Highly recommended.

Maybe one of the best Fish & Chip options in San Francisco. Food Menus on the tables, order at the Bar. UK style pub food, decent mix of pours on tap. $5 Draft Happy Hour starts at 4p, had 2 well poured Guinness to go with an order of Fish & Chips. Bar staff are cordial, the food is good, and the customers relaxed. During my late afternoon visit the baseball games were playing but those in the bar were focused on socializing with each other.

My husband and I were craving fish and chips so we decided to try the Pig & Whistle. The fish and chips were ok. But the fried mushrooms are to die for. My husband has never had fried mushrooms before and he couldn't stop taking about how good they were. I love fried mushrooms and the Pig & Whistles are the best I have had. Loved the atmosphere. I had heard about a drink on the Food Network that is only available in San Francisco called Fernet. I wasn't even 100% sure on the name but the bar tender was really nice and took the time to actually give me a sample just to see if I liked it. They were very busy but still very friendly. Definitely work stopping in.

Best foods :) You should visit this place for sure. We have tried and foods were very delicious! Thank u :)

What can I say. This is home cooking at it's best. Fish and chips shepherds pie. Steak and mushrooms pie. Cornish pasties etc. The food is freaking awesome.

Of course when it comes to a "real English Pub" food is not the first thing that comes to mind! And it didn't, but when we saw Cornish Pasties and Sausage Rolls on the menu...well what are we waiting for! Sadly, our eager expectations were unmet! Having said that it was a great place that served my favorite beer - Fullers London Pride, nice atmosphere and friendly service. Next time I'll try the Fish & Chips!

This wa a recommendation and the food wa really good. You order at the bar, which is fine. No one came to our table except to deliver our food. Table was slightly unclean, a coaster and menu had something on them and the bathroom was not clean. Could have been worse, but not appealing. I would try again though.

This was a great little (not so little!) pub and the guy behind the bar was super nice. Tasty food, good drinks selection and friendly conversation.

Good selection of British beers, all in excellent condition. Good pub food too. The fish and chips are worth trying - monster portion at a very good price. In fact, all the food is good value. Best pint of London Pride I've had for a long time. Bar staff and manager (Steve) are friendly and efficient. Definitely worth a visit.

Good local English pub complete with darts and pool.

We went to the Pig & Whistle in the period between Christmas and New Year. There were not many diners but the bar was busy. Nice, wooden banquette seating and friendly staff. Unfortunately, the food was miserable. I had bangers and mash. The bangers were dry, the mash thin, and the gravy could have been from a box. My husband's fish and chips were no better. The fish batter was greasy and a waste of good cod. Overall, we were disappointed. Go for the bar, not the food.

There are only a few good fish and chips locations in San Francisco and this is one of them. You get two very nice sized pieces of fish, loads of chips and curry sauce (if you like). Service is fast, there is plenty of seating for lunch and it is easy to park. There are lots of English items on the menu but I've only ever had the fish & chips. Next time I go, I'll take a pie home and try it. And, like I said, they pour their Guiness properly!

We've been here a couple times and we are never disappointed with the food or pints. Don't be fooled by the prices, you get a lot of bang for your buck. Our children love the place too, Cornish pastie, pies, sausage rolls, fish and chips we've tried them all and love them all. If you enjoy a pint try the Speckled Hen

We were tired, hungry and needed somewhere not too expensive to eat Food was very good- steak, roasted chicken breast, shepherd's pie and steak pie with drinks all for $60 (£36) Tried the fernet too- a herbal aperitif from Argentina/Italy. Not one for me but good to try- especially as it was a gift from the barman A good evening with friendly staff, good food and quick service Not an a la carte type place but a good honest meal just like a UK pub!

Been coming to this pub for many years since I was an undergrad at USF. Typical bar food, but delicious and fast. The food and drink prices were reasonable back then, and haven't really changed, making this an outstanding deal for quality food and drinks in this expensive city. The owner is English, and the vibe and decoration reflects it. This is mainly a neighborhood pub for this area and the University, but well worth stopping by for a pint.

Love this place. We were here to watch the baseball. The Giants lost, it was sad. Fortunately the awesome choice of beer on tap and yummy pub grub menu cheered us up. The staff are all super friendly and plenty of TVs to watch whatever game is on.

Wonderful, laid back vibe to this bar/restaurant. Cozy, old style. This is not a hipster joint. Would appeal to Baby Boomers/Gen Xers. Good for family parties. Small menu but good basic food; generous portions.

good place to hang with irish folk for beers after work
I Will Be Back!
A coworker told me that she had been checking out British pubs in the city because she was preparing for a trip to England. I thought to myself why I had never thought about looking for a British pub. I am constantly reading all things British. After a hike I stopped by and wow, yes it was absolutely worth it. I absolutely love the Shepard’s pie. I love the ambiance. The bartender was great. I really am looking forward to stopping by again.
