We went there following a recommendation when we got there 16/1/20 it was closed permanently with a sign thanking customers for their loyalty. Their website hadn’t been updated to reflect this so we had a wasted journey.

Ketchup Leather!

By MegtheHealer |

Hubby and I took our son and a friend to lunch on a Saturday. We ordered a variety of dishes -- Plan Check burger with ketchup leather, chicken and waffles, bleu cheese and bacon burger, and yellowfin tuna. We added sweet potato fries and pastrami fries. Son ordered an Old Fashioned, friend ordered a beer, hubby ordered a Pinot Grigio. EVERYTHING was yummy! Our server, Connor, was friendly and attentive. He explained that the original location was across the street from a government building where architects and builders had to take their plans to be approved and would often stop in afterward for a quick drink or bite to eat. Hence the name "Plan Check". Really enjoyed our meal!

Most amazing burgers ever!!!

By Shanelle M |

Amazing and unique food. Literally the best burger I've ever had. The picked items were amazing starters to start with. Our table of 5 literally got every type of burger to share just to try it all out. Our favorite was the one that had fried chicken. Amazing! Then for dessert you cannot leave without getting donuts. Another probably the best donut ever!!! The service was a little slow and couple orders mixed up but overall it was an amazing experience

So delicious!

By marybell9 |

The burgers are just so good. We also had beer nuts, salmon, oysters, and dessert. Everything was prepared well and served fairly quickly. This place does get quite busy on weekend nights, and does not take reservations.

Tasty

My friend and I decided to eat lunch here so we could sit outside and the menu looked good. The service and food was great. The pastrami gravy fries are delicious. They weren't smothered but had the right amount of pastrami and goodies to accent the fries. The salmon salad was terrific. It doesn't look like a lot in the bowl it's served in but it really is a good portion. It has lots of salmon and the dressing is nice and light. It's a nice spot to enjoy lunch.

Too much innovation in a burger

By jetach |

Plan Check has interesting twists on their burgers, but I wanted to keep it as "pure" as I can here: Plan Check Burger (PCB). For $12.50, you get dashi infused cheese, ketchup leather, schmaltz cooked onions, and house pickles with your buns and patty. There's a lot of cultures going on in this burger... The ketchup leather is pretty damn innovative and - surprise! - tastes just like ketchup but doesn't make a wet mess of your burger. I'm not really sure what schmaltz is supposed to taste like, but onions and pickles are always great on a burger (a good patty helps, too). The bun held up to everything inside. The cheese, though...dashi is traditionally made from a fish stock, and the fish is DEFINITELY present. I've never had umami overload before, but this was cutting it a bit too closely for me, mostly from the overpowering essence of fish. My table also split the regular fries and sweet potato fries - the house ketchup (for regular) and peach ketchup (for sweet potato) are refreshing, but I definitely preferred the peach ketchup. Apparently the house version has arugula, which is why I wasn't a fan... Overall, PC is a neat, casual place to grab some refined grub. While I would come back, I probably would branch out from the PCB because...fish.

PLAN CHECK KITCHEN IS IN CHECK WITH WHAT A RESTAURANT NEEDS!

By mightytraveler |

Visited Plan Check on Sawtelle over the weekend . Kudo's to Chef and owner Ernesto who visits tables and double checks everyone's order. Baked Crab Dip is just enough, which includes a blast of spice; PCB Burgers are solid, topped with 'ketchup leather' on wagyu beef which keeps burgers buns from getting too soggy - nice! Roasted Portobello is fair. Fries are just right - not greasy, but tasty and not too salty - goes great with handmade ketchup. Cocktails are unique, if skimpy for the price (this might become a problem). Wine glasses need to be upgraded - felt like they were purchased at Bed, Bath. Ok, save room for the Cruller Donuts - what a finale. Bravo!! Wait staff is on top of everything. It will become a great neighborhood restaurant. On a scale of "A" to "F" -- Plan Check gets a: "B+"

Twists on their burgers work

By Cybill Y |

Place was packed -- it heightened up my expectations. It is a burger place and I normally dont have high expectations for those. The ambiance was pretty much to my liking - there were shared tables, there were big groups, some, like us, were seated at the bar (at lunch). I had the Southern Fry and it was awesome. It had the right amount of spicy and the toppings complemented, not overpowered, the burger. My sister and friend had good burger choices as well, though my order was my favorite among the three. Serving was just right as well -- this is very rare in America -- so I didnt need to stuff myself with food until I'm on the verge of vomiting. Cool place. Will look for this again when I go back to LA.

Great choice for a casual meal

By KH198 |

This place has a young hip feel to it. The surroundings are unadorned, but the food is excellent, and the service is very good. Worth a visit.

Great Burger with a few twists

By FLK1946 |

We ate there with our son and daughter-in-law and had great burgers. Their vet idiom of an "Old Fashion" smokey bourbon cocktail was one of the best I have had. Very casual with good service. Not too crowded the night we were there.

Rockin burger

By BXzilla |

If you prefer chain store commercial burgers then stop reading this review now. This is for gourmet burger snobs like myself. Plan check is a noisy happening place situated on a street called Sawtelle in an area called Little Osaka in West LA. Their burgers are unique and flavorful and their waffle sweet potato fries kill. Check out the menu and pix and decide for yourself.

suprise gem

By redrider1 |

discovered this while driving to the veterans administration on Sawtelle. In a busy area this resturant stod out as it seemed busier then the other resturants s in the areaso I figured that it was probly a standout, my figguring wqas right. I had a short rib plate and it was ver good. The next time I wernt I had a hamburger and it turne out to be one of the berst . My oppinion is thats it a little highe but for the quality it is worth it. I recomend it highly.

Amazing

By Rich D |

Great food that blends different flavors to give you a new twist on the standard bar food. A very Cool atmosphere. We went for a few drinks and spent several hours.

Delish!

By a k |

My son who lives in Los Angeles raved about this restaurant. He said the burgers were the best. He was right. The truffle burger is outrageous. It was very juicy and flavorful. It is highly recommended.

Different kind of burgers

By BXzilla |

My wife and I had a day off together and had heard about this place that served eclectic burgers. Needless to say,we went over for a casual lunch and had a pleasant experience. We split the PCB burger and the Chef's favorite. The PCB comes with Americanized dashi cheese, ketchup leather, schmaltz onions, mixed pickles on a crunch bun. The chef's favorite comes with cheese two ways, bacon two ways, ketchup leather, sunny fried egg and hot sauce on a bun. We added a side of sweet potato waffles with beef tallow and peach ketchup. The meal was good but my only complaint was that we ordered the burgers medium and they came medium rare.

Get the burger!

Stopped for the first time yesterday,!always a good sign when people are waiting outside for the door to open, blue cheese burger was really great, staff super friendly too.

Good to go !

By 4kiwismiths |

Plan checks menu is varied. Salads / burgers / sandwiches/ platters . Staff are friendly but not over bearing. Good for quick lunch. Kids welcomed with crayons & paper!

Great burger and cocktails !

By BasketballMama |

Started with the warm crab dip - baked with nori on top and thick toasted white bread. Ordered the cocktail tropic thunder and then the short rib pot roast , chefs favorite burger and the fries. Finished it off with the cruller, served warm with vanilla ice cream. Fantastic meal. Service was a little slow, but the meal was so delicious !

Best burger

By BarbA24 |

I don't eat beef, but those I were with do. Each of them said it was the best burger in LA. Very laid back atmosphere.

Premium food & excellent service

By Dawood Al-Jarrah |

I went there with my friends abd found that the restaurant was fully crowded so we decided to order take out. Service was good. Staff were active and friendly. Unfortunately they forgot one burger and I didn't check untill l arrived my home. But I got satisfied after trying one of the most tastiness burgers I have ever tried. Next time I'm planning to get a taple and enjoy the atmosphere.

Outstanding food

By Bill P |

Just looking for someplace different and found this place, not much to look at from the street, but Wow! Great food! Had the crab dip to start, moved on to a burger and the pastrami sandwich with fries cooked in beef tallow. Finished up with fresh donuts & ice cream. Everything was outstanding, not cheap but worth every dollar.

love it!

By JoshuaD4 |

very nice atmosphere & decoration. burger was good, and the banana cream desert was YUMMIE.

Wow! What a Surprise!

By stevensE8641XY |

We were driving by and decided to stop at this restaurant. Boy are we glad we did! We had great, personal service as we sat at the chef's table. How do I describe the food? Think southern cooking with a west coast flair. Really good and unique taste combinations with interesting uses of pickles in just about every dish. I had the Fried Chicken and Waffles and it was great, but it was a bigger meal than I could really eat, but it was only $17 so I couldn't complain! If you are looking for someplace that is different but not pretentious and that has some very clever flavor combinations, do yourself a favor and stop by.

Great Drinks!! Great Burger you have to try the Leather Ketchup. Overall good experience - atmosphere was oka.

Yum!!!!!!

Yum! This place rocks. Great food and fabulous service. It's always a super nice treat to eat here. :)

Perhaps best tasting burger in town...

By savvygirlLosAngeles |

We had another wonderful experience at Plan check. We sat outside, heaters were working. Inside was very noisy. Great pastrami burger for him and even better truffle mushroom burger her. The couple we were with also loved their burgers. Our friend thought the roll was a bit doughy but I had no complaints. We also had their beet salad with goat cheese (whipped) which was very good and healthy kale salad, also sweet potatoes fries and chili fries. As for desert??? We were so full but we managed to squeeze in bites of their doughnuts. Drink of choice was vodka with horseradish and beats, interesting and refreshing with a little zing. Oh, and service was also wonderful. We had a fabulous waiter with a great sense of humor!

Best Burger & Drink Creations, Ever.

By cutemonsterchild |

All of their sauces and condiments are made on site. Special Strami burger with swiss cheese & chunks of pastrami as well as the Chefs Favorite with a fried egg and bacon were soooo good. No description can do them justice - going to save the details and just say you will enjoy these burgers. Cocktails too! Inventive and scrumptious all around so as long as you know the basics of what you like personally you will have a good meal here.

Home of the $13 burger

By Charles W |

yes, the burger is very good. It should be for $13. The restaurant is in the industrial style. It does have outdoor seating. Parking is either looking for street parking or using the valet. The service was good.

Great Burger!!!

By Erica K |

We are very picky about burgers. Friends told us this was one to put on the books so we gave it a shot and we were not disappointed!!! We all ordered burgers and everyone in our party of 5 loved theirs! The flavors are fantastic....and we all really loved the peach ketchup that comes with the sweet potato waffle fries. We ordered the kids meal donut with added ice cream for dessert and it was huge and delicious....more like a cross of a churro and a sugar donut. There is also a small lot for parking next to the restaurant. it was a $6 flat rate which we all thought was reasonable for this part of the city.

Very cool place

By OregonBob14 |

We enjoyed brunch...and quite possibly the coolest guy every waited on us. Give it a try, you will be glad you did.

A shame!!

By Belu_Amoros |

This restaurant looks fine from the street but it is actually a shame. We ordered two starters: a " small plate" of cheese and a stuffed mushroom. The plate was 3 mini pieces of cheese, absolutely ridiculous. The mushroom tasted fine still poor. $9 for the cheese, never been tricked so bad. Please see the photos.

Amazing atmosphere

By Amr Z |

I love this bar and restaurant, they make amazing drinks and good food. I love to hangout with my friends over there during the happy hours. Hot wings and Asian wings are my fevorites and Old fashion drink is my favorite

definitely good, but not mind blowing

By Arielle S |

Plan Check is a hot spot in my neighborhood that is touted to have the best burger. It's very good, but not mind blowing. I've been to the Fairfax location and prefer it due to its size and space, even a fun place to just grab drinks. The Sawtelle location is miserable, it is super small and draws a big crowd so there are typically lines out the door (not worth waiting for) and parking is insufferable! My piece of advice if you are going to plan check is to not miss the fried chicken sandwich! It is excellent!!! If you are down to share with a friend the ideal is to go halfsies with the burger and the fried chicken sandwich. You will not regret it. The menu is very limited and the drinks are expensive. I have also tasted the poutine which sounds delicious but was wayyy too rich and overly salted. Stick to what they're known for!

Charming places...

By Dachonger |

Baked Crab Dip prepared with dynamite sauce, masago, charred tomato, nori, and served with toast points. Savory mechanism to quell swelling appetites. Dollar Fifty Chicken Wings were sharp and pungent. Piquantly provocative, the Bleuprint Burger with smoked blue cheese, pig candy, fried onions, roasted garlic steak sauce, peppercress ceremoniously weakened my resolve and I surrendered to its authority. Multiplicity of flavors and textures capitulated to the wanton desires of man. Incorruptible, the Chefs (sic) Favorite Burger prepared with cheese two ways, bacon two ways, ketchup leather, sunny fried egg, hot sauce was lechery in its most primitive state. Cheers to immodesty. Brawny Sweet Potato Waffle Fries fried in beef tallow and served with peach ketchup. A hearty prize. Bearing some semblance to churros, cooked to order, served with cream, the Cruller Donuts were dismally dry and distinctly destitute. Hamburger Hegemony.

Burger and beer, perfect match!

By Julia M |

We order the PC burger and it was delicious: the meat, the bread and sauces just work perfectly together. For sides we had two types of fries: regular and sweet potatoes with two sauces (one like ketchup and another sweet one made of peaches), just perfect! We chose 2 different beers, they were normal but they have a large list were you probably can find one that you like. Really beautiful and cool place, they have several TVs where I think they play matches and stuff and also a bar to have some drinks. Service was really nice. We would repeat on our next visit to LA :)

Great Burgers and Beer

By Marc B |

Get the Chef's Favorite Burger and a Boont Amber Ale - yummy! Tell them to forget the ketchup leather -- it's an interesting idea, but just doesn't come off well. Sit outside if you can get a table there - it's quieter and relaxing.

Delicious and Inventive Food, very accomodating

By nylabuyer |

On any given night when I ask my husband what he wants for dinner, the answer is always Plan Check. The burgers are creative and they are open to mixing, matching and customizing. Sunday evening I got the TRUFFLE MUSHROOM SWISS BURGER - so happy they made this a permanent addition to the menu. I got it with a lettuce wrap instead of a bun, added bacon and a fried egg...yum. Additionally, I got the SWEET POTATO WAFFLE FRIES are fried in beef tallow and served with a peach ketchup - these are also great to dip in the truffle aioli that came with my burger. As Plan Check has gotten more popular, it has also gotten louder and the wait is longer - but still worth it. If you are craving a great burger, this is the best in LA.

Good Food

By allnines1414 |

Great place to go with family or friends to grab a burger and a drink. Very casual and kid friendly. Worth a trip.

Fantastic...

By Andy_555555 |

I love burgers -- they're my favorite food. Umami Burger is my favorite burger, if I had to choose one. So when I heard that former Umami exec chef (I believe) was cooking it up at the Plan Check, I had to try it. And I'm glad I did. The Plan Check burger is almost the opposite of the Umami burger, in that it is a heart-attack explosion of flavors. Utterly delicious in a completely different way. Bonus: Plan Check has much better sides and stuff (fries, the veggie chips, etc.) than Umami.

Expensive burgers

By OCDane |

This place is nice but the food is VERY expensive. Service is great and the place is clean.. I only go here when my boss pays :-)

LOVE this place!

By GoodToGoGirl |

This is one of my favorite places to go for upscale comfort food that is unique and delicious and has a little bit of atmosphere too. You can take guests here and be sure that they will find something they like to eat and drink. They have a lot of cool cocktails, and I can never keep myself from ordering the smoky fried chicken; I love the pickled okra and the sweet potato jam. To die for! If you have a sweet tooth, get the donuts.

Awesome!

By Jack S |

Plan Check is always amazing. Great service, great food. As a west-side local who has eaten here many times I highly recommend this eatery. Casual excellence. All of the burgers are great. If you can catch the daily special of the house made pastrami ON a burger its totally killer. Fries are some of the best ever. and hello, doughnut! Get there.

Lovely view of sunset

By R365UBP |

We stopped here for 2 reasons - everywhere was busy and this had a great view of the sunset over the beach. Staff were accommodating and let us choose our table. There was a reasonable selection of wine and a few cocktails. We ordered buffalo chicken wings which were by far the hottest I have ever experienced but very tasty. I stuck to the teriyaki ones in the end. Reasonably priced for a wine bar

Great Burgers and Beers

By jtlerman |

Tucked away, just south of Santa Monica Boulevard on Sawtelle, is a great little burger hideaway. We tried the PCB which is their signature burger. Great bun, meat cooked to order and served with their signature "ketchup leather," you can get the PCB with or without bacon (definitely go with!). Each burger comes in its own little skillet. We ordered a side a fries for the table. Fries were just okay, but the burger was great. Add a beer from the bar and you're a happy camper. Outside seating had heater lamps if it gets chilly. Menu is pretty limited. A couple of salads are available, but everyone we saw was having a burger.

Awesome restaurant/bar

By bbbbbqqqqq |

Very cool place. Service is great and the food is even better. The burger has to be one of the best in LA with some interesting flavours. Please do get the donut dessert even though it will probably give you instant diabetes, it's worth it.

Now THAT'S a burger!

By michaelbeetoronto |

Finally a contender in the burger wars! Looking for a really different, juicy, fresh burger? Plan Check really delivered tonight. Ok, it isn't a low calorie salad, but go all in on this to treat yourself. We had the crispy fries, sweet potato waffle fries and one of us ordered the pastrami fries. All were excellent. If that wasn't enough, we actually ordered the 3 donut dessert - freshly made while we waited, they were covered in cinnamon sugar and tasted a lot like a churro, well known in Southern California. Go...eat....enjoy!

Great Stop!

By JC |

Great appetizers and happy hour discounts. Had the home made beer nuts, they are great! Also had the special green chili chicken cheese fries. There's nothing else like them!

World's Best burgers!!!!

amazing burgers, everything I ate here was top notch, cant wait to go back.

awesome fried smoked chicken

By timhoeve |

i had the smoked fried chicken plate and it was awesome. my brother had a burger, don't remember which one but i tasted it also and it was excellent. i highly recommend the smoked fried chicken. nice atmosphere, outside seating, just off the 405 if your traveling, stop in for the chicken!

Great place and great food

By ryanhowell_85 |

We stumbled across this when wandering from our hostel. It's a real cool place, wicked furniture and the style of the place is great. The food is out of this world.

Pleasant for a solo business dinner--some good chicken!

By Don S |

Design, food, service and wine were outstanding! I didn't expect to find a red wine from Martin Ray Vineyards, but, this place has the nice red blend--an excellent wine! Connor, my server, was pleasant, efficient, not too talky and had good hair. I had the "southern friend" which was just the right size for dinner--the friend chicken was very well prepared, the gravy was tasty, and ht combination with pickled okra was a pleasant surprise. The swee potatoes were excellent, but, were cold (not sure it they were supposed to be warm?) The cocktail list was extensive, and I can see why this is a popular gastro-pub. I went to the 1111Wilshire location--(but, they are not listed on tripadvisor!)--it was in the building where I was staying, so, it was extremely convenient. I'll be back the next time I'm in Los Angeles.

Great Burger, Great Splurge!

By RVB_LAX |

Plan Check has slowly been creeping as one of the best new burgers in LA, in my most modest opinion. There are the classics, such as In-N-Out, but it's always interesting to me to get a new perspective and twist on a classic dish. I have been here dozens of times (it's a blessing and a curse to live within walking distance) and can only vouch for what I think is the best burger they serve, The Chef's Favorite!! It's got such an explosion of many tasty and properly-curated flavors into one burger that I have never felt the need to deviate and try another burger on their menu because this burger just hits the mark each and every single time for me - no lie! It consists of cheese cooked two ways (the old-fashioned, regular way, and this cheese crisp waffle thing that gives it more flavor and texture), thick pieces of bacon, this innovative thing they've come up with called 'ketchup leather', which for all intents and purposes, is a ketchup fruit roll up strip that the burger more flavor and texture, a sunny side up fried egg and hot sauce (not too much, think either tabasco or tapatio). This collection of flavors is an explosion of deliciousness...if you're into that sort of thing...and if not, kindly reserve judgment :) The fries are incredibly delicious as well, as are there waffled sweet potato fries accompanied by peach ketchup....trust me, this combo works quite well! I, however, prefer the regular fries - I believe they are cooked in beef stock, which gives them an extra kick in flavor. Dessert is pretty good, too, though I rarely have space for it. They serve these churro-like donuts, which are so fluffy and just the right amount of sweet, with a slightly different texture than the traditional donut. Without a doubt, the food served at Plan Check is very creative and well-done food, but dining at Plan Check is not always on the cheaper side. If you throw in cocktails for two, it becomes more of a date night or an occasion to eat out than just a casual lunch/dinner (or maybe we're just on the poorer side LOL). A meal for two with cocktails and gratuity is in the neighborhood of $100 give or take, depending on whether you get a appetizers/drinks/dessert. This is not a criticism of Plan Check because I do believe in a high-quality dining experience, and the food and service here is pretty top notch, but my note is more of an observation/heads up to people expecting a cheap meal. Although I am willing to pay $14 for a burger, I don't necessarily find that to be cheap. It's a nice splurge when we dine here, whether money-wise and calorie-wise, but it's still a splurge. And if you find yourself in LA, looking to splurge on an excellent burger, you can't go wrong with Plan Check.

Delicious

By Michael W |

Had a takeout order from here and the food was really good. The chef's favorite burger was delicious along with their sweet potato fries. I'm definitely gonna go sit for lunch when I have the time.

Superb burgers, amazing sweet potato fries, but pricey

By TT_ND |

Plan Check is a modern restaurant with a hip vibe and industrial interior. This place is hopping during the evenings, especially on weekends. People come by during the week for lunches regularly too. It's not a large restaurant so expect a long wait during peak hours. Their specialty is burgers. Their burgers are far from basic. Truffles, bleu cheese, generous beef patties, and unique sauces make for a delicious treat. I've even tried their black bean patty, which is surprisingly juicy, substantial, and yummy. Their sweet potato fries with homemade peach ketchup cannot be missed. They are greasy, yet classy, and always tasty. This is not a cheap burger and fries joint. You definitely pay for the trendy atmosphere and creative menu. I'd recommend it for friends celebrating over dinner or a relaxed but still hip dinner date.

Not your typical burger joint

By Tommy087 |

Excellent burgers and sandwiches. A trendy burger joint with modern industrial design and creatively-crafted burgers. The beer nuts and veggie chips were nice starters, but both over-salted. I had the southern fry burger with chicken and sliced duck ham. It was unusual and very good. Not your typical burger joint. Would return.

Brunch visit: give it a chance

By Luke M |

I would say this was a meh visit, my first time having their brunch, but I feel it has potential. Could be great. I ordered two items for brunch: Bloody Mary and the pork belly Benedict. Bloody Mary: too salty. I’d for sure try it again if I knew there was less salt. Benedict: the eggs were too well done, the middle was cooked through, not poached and runny like they should be. There was also not enough hollandaise. Would have been a great dish with those changes. The pork belly was thick and crispy, perfectly done. The spicy paste was also so good. I am food with spicy, I know people who would say it’s too spicy, so beware. I think runny eggs and more hollandaise would help. I give it an average writing because for as much potential the drink and Benedict had, they were not all that good on my visit. Will try again, maybe it was an off-day.

Fantastic Find!

By Karsten A |

Happened to stumble on this place! It is a little local hidden gem! Literally wanted to try everything on the menu! Delicious meal, comfortable environment, nice patio, great price lunch cocktails. Would find this place again next time I’m in LA.

Best Burger in LA? Maybe.

By SandersMusic |

I'm on a kick of visiting restaurants that have, at one time or another, been heralded as having the Best Burger in LA. Next up, then: Plan Check. And it's waaaay overdue. I had the Chef's Favorite Burger, complete with fried egg, and it lived up to its reputation. The integration of elements here is the headline—everything is supremely well-considered and executed. The two types of cheese and two types of bacon accentuate and give dimension to the taste, rather than simply existing as conversation pieces. And the accompanying fries were a step up, as well… not quite as next-level as that burger, but well worth your Abe Lincoln. Highly Recommended. I find myself thinking about this meal nearly a month later.

Nice neighborhood haunt

By BoboTravlr |

Stopped by for a quick burger and the food and service is great. You cannot beat Plan Check for a neighborly place to eat. Nice selection of draught beers. If in the area of Sawtelle stop by. At the top of the street so parking is easier and out of the hub bub of the street. Worth the visit.

great burgers, a bit pricy

By Ron T |

4 of us had a late lunch here on a TUE. They do have great burgers and fries. Outdoor seating. With tip it came to $125.

A must try hip burger and beer place in West LA

By Maryan F |

We went there last Friday and it was a bummer that I wasn't able to have their burger, but my co-workers had burger and I had the veggie burger. I don't normally order veggie burger but this veggie is totally different from any other restaurant/burger joint. It was tasty and delicious. My next visit will be this Wednesday and I will have their burger for sure. Their fries and sweet potato fries is a killer. There is a wait if you go during lunch time, and happy hour through dinner time but it's worth the wait. This place is good for friends to hang out with good food. A must try when you're in West LA.

Great Burgers, Fries, Meh, Book a Place at Emergency

By MrEricJL |

Urban myth or reality -- Plan Check Kitchen & Bar was started up by a former chef at Umami Burger. Either way, you could feel the Umami roots, as the burgers were quite good. The menu overall was heavily Japanese influenced, and the burgers were quite delicious. The vibe was new restaurant hot. 45 minute waiting list at 9:30 on a rainy friday night, the place (it really looks more like a bar/pub than a restaurant) was chock-full of young professionals out for a night on the town. The room was marked by long communal tables and a sizeable bar area with folks three deep. The decor is dark, modern with a hip feel. The food. As I said, the burgers were delicious. I had the Chef's Burger, a wagyu burger with two strips of bacon, two types of cheese (really? couldn't tell), a ketchup leather that looked more like a thin deep fried hash brown, a terrific spicy sauce that was more smokey than spicy, topped with a sunny side up fried egg. Fantastic delight of flavors and textures. Medium rare turned out to be seared tartar in a few places, so medium will be my speed next time. My fried got the Bleuprint Burger with a subtle beu cheese flavor mixed with fried onions straws, pig candy (it looked like bacon to me), a wonderful sauce, and greens. To be honest, her burger was better than mine, though still a little raw for our tastes. As for the wagyu meat -- couldn't tell the difference with all of the competing flavors. The burgers were tender, but then so are most good burgers. But, Planchekc's burgers were mighty in size -- pretty large in fact, with all of the ingredients bursting at the seams. The other burgers looked tantalizing, and we can't wait to try more. The extras, though, well, you might want to hold off. We had fries that came in a tiny little dish with the most disgusting ketchup we'd ever tried. It tasted of edamame, the boiled soy bean pods that are served as appetizers in Japanese restaurants. Not to our interesting. Luckily, our server also gave us a little peach ketchup that seemed more like marmalade. Either way, it turned out to be much more compatible and quite the treat. the fires, however, were a sad little puddle of soft, mushy, and despite being fried in good ol' American beef fat, not so tasty. Texturally, tasteurally (huh?), and tinily, not the bargain and very disappointing. As we waited for our food, we saw quite a few of the appetizers walk by and we were unimpressed, except for the price. Tiny dishes of pickles, a small slice of what looked to be brie or gouda with three small crackers and a small slice of fruit ($5), maybe six or seven small slices of a salami (cured meat -- $5), snmall dish of sweet potato fries ($6), small dish of chili cheese fries ($9). To end our meal, we ate cruller donuts. Made to order and accompanied by what seemed to be frosting, whipped cream, and bananas, the donuts were culler shaped, but dense like cake donuts. The were fragile, yet heavy -- I realize that this odes not seem to make sense, but they fell apart as we shared them. To be frank, I wanted to like them, but were disappointed. To recap -- place has a young professional, noisy vibe, the burgers are very good -- almost as good as Umami, our favorite place, and the sides are nothing special. Eventually, the wait will dwindle, so we'll return then. But reserve a spot at the Emergency Room -- the burgers were sizable, fat soaked monsters, and I could feel my arteries clogging as we entered the restaurant. The price -- $35 for the two of us, so not the cheapest. But guys, get bigger plates for the fries, and if you can count the appetizers, something is wrong.

Food was good and the service was great! Great place to check out if your tired of the chains! The only issue I had was the menus was limited.

2nd Best Burger in LA - Yep better than In and Out

By Lee C |

The Chef's Choice Burger - not to be missed. Better tahn In and Out and really good. Made by the guys who did Umami Burger. Great menu and selection, awesome outdoor seating in a very cool part of town. Amazing specials that are on the blackboard.

Barely so-so

By Kim P |

Margaritas are tasty, but TINY! Plan Check burger - very good, especially with the ketchup leather. Kale Salad - not good at all, even though it was a house special. Some of the wait staff was almost rude (not all). The guy who brought the food made it seem like we were totally putting him out when we asked for an extra plate to split our meal. Underwhelming but we’ll probably give it another chance.

Great Bistro of Americana - combines chic with fun

By Alexkojfman |

The food is great, but a little pricey if you really want to think about it. But worth it. The specials are always a nice surprise. It's the kind of place that buzz with energy, because of it is busy and popular. Fun, and worth checking out with friends or a loved one. I celebrated my anniversary with my wife here, because it's low-key with a hip decor, speedy and friendly service. (We've also been to the Fairfax location and their signature dish there is different - but the vibe is the same).

Plan Check for Best Burger in L.A.

If you love burgers, the blueprint burger with smoked blue cheese burger with pig candy bacon, fried onions and steak sauce is next to impossible to beat. Make plans to check it out at Plan Check. You won't be disappointed.

Perhaps the best burger in LA?

By Jonny K |

Probably one of the best burgers I had in LA. Its not like your in-n-out burger (obviously) this is a restaurant burger joint. Everything I had was just "a mouth party" I highly advise if your in LA and have the time is to grab a burger at this place. Really worth it.

Really good

By FJS34 |

Came here solo one night after working. It was a Tuesday night and pretty busy. That was a good sign but I felt awkward being alone. I ended up posting on their bar area. It took a little while to get served, but after I put in my order things came out fast. I got the southern fry chicken sandwich, sweet potato fries and their orange Julius. It was all ver good. It can get loud on there so I wouldn't say this is a first date spot, but I'd come back with a small group. They have a nice bar, good food, and laid back atmosphere.

No wait for 7 on a Saturday at 6pm, yet place was bustling

By 33will33 |

The food was much better than I expected. I thought it would be typical pub fare. Sweet potato fries came with a peach ketchup that was exactly what we never knew our sweet potato fries needed. I had a salad with corn, a delicious vinagrette like I have never tasted before, and the best sugared pecans I've ever had. And the chicken I had added to it was perfectly cooked. Every person in our party loved their food, from salad to burger to the churro donut for dessert. Just hip enough for everyone and we loved sitting at the big counter height table.

Food tasty but pricey and service could be better

By MelvinPusfinger |

I give this restaurant four stars because the food was tasty. We stopped here on a Sunday afternoon and shared a grilled chicken sandwich with onions and mushrooms. That was very tasty. The kids had chicken strips and fries. I have doubts as to whether or not this place is truly welcoming when it comes to families with small children. Our server was polite but not particularly welcoming or friendly.. The bathrooms are very clean. And there is free parking on the side street beside the restaurant. This place is quite pricey. The chicken sandwich comes at fries but will set you back approximately $24 come including tax.

Juiciest, most savory burger I've ever had!

By happyhoneymooners_10 |

I got the Plan Check Burger, akin to your standard cheeseburger, and boy was I impressed! It was so juicy, flavorful, and savory! The portions are good sized but not overwhelming like some restaurants can be with portion sizes. I split the sweet potato fries with my friend and they were delicious too. They use an interesting element with their burgers called ketchup leather, which is dehydrated ketchup that is remoistened and absorbed by the hot burger patty...DELICIOUS!! And I'm a picky eater, too!!

Great lunch and Excellent Service!

By twaone |

Met relatives for lunch and were able to snag a spot on the patio. Our server, Francesca, was fantastic. Great combination of energy and friendliness! We had fries (both kinds) chicken sandwiches and the short rib plate. All were excellent! Great place on a sunny California day!

Great Food

By sasserscampbell |

One of the few non-Japanese joints on this section of Sawtelle, Plan Check is a welcome addition to the area. With a limited menu of pub food, it's not for the health conscious. The food is terrific however. The burger was one of the better ones I have had in a long time. The "Pig Candy" is divine. I found the beer selection to be a little limited (only one IPA) and I would like to see them make an effort to offer a whiskey selection (not that LA needs another Bourbon bar but it goes with the menu). I did not try one of their signature cocktails but some of them looked inspired. The biggest negative for me was the tiny sized snacks. I'd rather they make bigger snacks and charge more instead of having to get multiple orders. The pickle plates are literally two or three pickled things. The beer nuts are essentially a handful of nuts in small bowl. The cheese order is a single square. They all tasted good but even for two you would want to get multiple orders of each and it adds up if you're with a bigger group. I would go back. It's very casual and not at all a scene. It wasn't crowded on a Tuesday night -- good thing as they don't take reservations.

Finger lickin’ good

Beef burgers are amazing and their sweet potato fries are great. But make sure you try their fried chicken (either as a side or in a burger) it is THE BEST!

Good Food & Cool Neighborhood Vibe

By CarolDM1900 |

Great atmosphere in this trendy little place on Sawtelle, with a very eclectic menu, just steps away from our lodging in the same neighborhood. We liked the whole thing -- the big, flashy menu on display over the counter, the odd-ball food pairings and interpretations, and the energetic, mostly youngish clientele who seemed to be locals, not tourists. The food was very good. We had the deliciously juicy truffle mushroom swiss burger and the rather amazing thick-sliced pastrami, with a big side of crisp and tasty sweet potato fries. Nothing was same-old, same-old. Everything was different, like the pressed slice of catsup "leather" instead of standard sauce. And when they call something "thick-sliced" here, they mean it. That hunk of pastrami was very far from the thin-sliced stuff you'd find in most places, and very savory, too. Our sole disappointment was the absence of wine. The cocktail list seemed a little too cutesy. We'd have enjoyed a good classic martini, if there'd been one. But we couldn't abide a drink that, say, mixed gin with pickle juice (among other ingredients). So we settled for a couple of very good, ice cold PCH beers from the Santa Monica Brew Works. This is a place that just kind of crackles, with an interesting and appealing menu and a good time to be had by all. Everyone's welcome. So stop by if you're in the neighborhood. I hope you'll enjoy it as much as we did.

Great burgers, great food

By travel-adventure42 |

Four of us had various burgers, fries and sweet potato waffle fries, and dessert. Burgers a good size, cooked correctly, and very flavorful. Bit pricey but well worth it. Crullers for dessert were very good. Should have gotten with more ice cream.

Great cocktails

By keyser_soosie |

Let me preface this review by saying that I'm not a big burger person. So when my husband kept asking me to try this place, I didn't want to sacrifice a dinner to check it out. Besides, the place looks packed at night all the time. We went on a Sunday afternoon and it wasn't that bad. Service was great, we got a nice comfy seat and ordered right away. I got the PCB medium rare, and the hubby got a cheeseburger on their specials menu board. We also ordered fries and kale salad. Loved the kale salad and fries. My burger was pretty good and came out more rare than medium rare. No complaints here though. It tasted fine, but I love veggies. I should have asked for lettuce and tomatoes or something. My husband's cheeseburger was better than mine b/c it had a ton of jalapenos in it. Oh, and I also got to try a tropic thunder cocktail. I ordered a Dr. Pepper, but he misheard me and brought me that. It was surprisingly good! My soda was flat so that's a bummer. To finish off our meal, we got the donuts. It was divine. I would go back just to check out more of their cocktails and eat the donuts. The burgers are just okay though. I prefer Hole in the Wall and Counter over the ones I tasted. I would go back, but wouldn't make it a priority.

PCB - Nuts - Pickles - Fries & Drink = Yum

By Luvzog |

You can sit outside (which I did - beautiful day) or inside at the bar, booths or high tops. Ice water shows up first then a lovely waitress named October explained the specials and engaged in idle conversation (my birth month is October too). For my drink I opted to go with the Ginger Grant - Pisco Porton from Peru, Blood Orange, Sake, Aperol an Italian aperitif and a single Picked Ginger slice - very refreshing and I wanted more (ok - two more before I finished my meal). I started out with Beer Nuts - they were sweet salty mix of peanuts & cashews with a subtle hint of wasabi – I wanted a lot more but little pricy at $3. Then spicy cucumbers were picked in sriracha and topped with sesame seeds - cold and refreshing with a nice crisp crunch and the perfect amount of spice. Went with the name sake PCB (Plan Check Burger) - perfectly cooked meat, dashi cheese, ketchup leather (weird & not needed), schmaltz onions which means cooked in clarified chicken fat, mixed pickles (I got two kinds) and nice fresh tasting bun - I really enjoyed this but it was messy and to be honest I wish I had gone with the Blueprint Burger - which a lady at the table next to me ordered. It looked amazing and she said was one of the best hamburgers she's had. The Fries are cooked in beef tallow with smoked salt and fresh made ketchup - I personally prefer thinner cut fries but these were cooked perfectly and didn't need the ketchup - which I actually didn't care for. I asked for an extra side of smoked salt and they were spot on. I then had a last minute addition: Pickled Chorizo Sausage w/green garlic. My first time for this sort of pickled meat - cold, spicy, sour & wonderful. Also really like all the little cast iron serving plates - nice presentation - I'm sure the dishwashers hate them...

What's ketchup leather?

By Jessica B |

Hotel recommended this restaurant, it was walking distance. Loved the unique menu items! Topped my best burger list! Fresh donut for dessert too! Server (Adriaan) was excellent! Wasn't sure what ketchup leather was, but I ate it all before asking. :) Price was reasonable for location. Would love to return! Everyone needs to try a fried egg on their burger!

Average Burger, spotty Service

By melobeam |

The Skinny: Parking- valet or metered street Decor- concrete and wood Noise Level- HIGH Restroom- not so clean Service- spotty at best Coke- Mexican in a bottle Food- average I had high hopes for Plan Check and sadly I was disappointed. You should be aware that they do not take reservations and they will only seat you with your whole party there. The restaurant is very loud and you practically have to shout to hear the person across from you. We were seated at a table in a back nook area. The chairs are definitely made for style than for comfort. The table next to us was so close the ladies behind me keep leaning back into me during their festively loud celebration. We ordered our food and the appetizers came out in a timely fashion. I shared the portobello mushroom appetizer with my friend. It is supposed to be a roasted mushroom stuffed with swiss cheese and kale with a garlic sauce on top. The mushroom was not hot, the cheese was coagulated and the garlic sauce tasted like A-1 sauce that had gone off. It was truly awful. My hubby and his friend shared the fries which were just okay. Everything was served in these tiny cast iron plates making presentation a forgotten art. For dinner, my hubby had the Ahi tuna served in a tiny plate but he said he like it. I tried a rock shrimp which tasted bland and didn't see like it was fresh rather from a bag of frozen shrimp. The blueprint burger was okay, nothing special, too much bleu cheese to be balanced out by the bacon (pig candy) however the fried onions were a nice touch. My friend got the Fried chicken - also on a tiny plate - and that was okay, not mind blowing. They forgot my drink that I ordered and I had to ask a bus boy to get it but that's what happens when you are a waiter and don't write anything down. I expected so much more based on the hype of this place.

Naughty Goodness

By Derek A |

I've been a big fan for a long time, plan Check is a wonderful fun decadent place that doesnt take themselves too seriously but takes their food, coctails and flavors very seriously there staff are well trained and the restaurant runs like a well oiled machine I will always go back and will always love plan Check!

great drinks

By E.A.K. Ramen |

Tend to stop by after work here. I visited the Sawtelle location first a few years ago, but like the Fairfax location better. Food is always nice comfort food, but the drinks are always whats get me in . Gets a bit rowdy at times, but would still go back any day.

Down to the last bite

By Karin |

My eyes are usually bigger than my stomach, but the Southern Fry chicken burger I ordered was so amazing I just had to make sure I devoured the whole thing! Smokey fried jidori chicken, spicy green pimento cheese, duck breast ham & pickles - need I say more? Also, try their cruller donuts - a variation on churros, with bananas and cream. It's a hidden neighbourhood gem just down by the 405 on Sawtelle.

heavy lard land

By Charlie |

you could probably cover week's worth of oil in one meal here. if you're the type who likes to taste lipids in your burger and everything else, this is the place for you.

Good food and cocktails

By DavinC |

The food and drinks here are nice, with little twist that make them unique. We had a couple of cocktails each and tried the Fried Chicken Burger, Sweet Potato Fries and one of the side salads. The service was good.

Overrated and Overpriced!

By 618ObsessedTraveler |

I was looking forward for a new great gourmet burger so I thought to give Plan Check a try. I have to say I was very disappointed. I got the pastrami sandwich and my hands were full of grease. The pastrami was think and chewy. I rather have the pastrami at The Hat. The fried egg on top of it wasn't very impressive as all.

Great quality burger

By shipdad |

The burgers were fantastic. Real good quality and taste. The ketchup leather is creative and delicious. This location has a nice patio which I recommend.

Delicious Burgers

By michaelbeetoronto |

Always one of our favorite stops on vacation in LA area. Had the burger with the bacon and fried egg...loved the fries with the home made ketchup!

New Twist on Comfort Favorites!

By Coleen L |

Enjoyed a tasty lunch out with friends at Plan Check Kitchen & Bar. This Heaven of Hamburgers provides a new, creative twist on many comfort favorites! We had started off with an order of pickled eggs, veggie chips & stuffed mushrooms - all of which were quite tasty! My husband ordered the burger & thought it was simply the best & juiciest ever! When he ordered ketchup, our waiter brought out ketchup leather (dried ketchup much like a fruit roll up). I had the delicious Kale Caesar with Salmon. All I can say is YUM! Super tasty, health consciously prepared and creative cuisine!

Great burger

By Upnorthtransplant1 |

Great burger cooked to perfection. Friend had the Southern Fried and said one of the best Chicken she's had. Server Johnathan was great.

Simple But Unique Burgers

By Duke C |

Even though I keep thinking what is the enact gap in the market for after the burger restaurants that keep popping up in the US and UK, I have to put my hands high up to come back here again. The vibe of the place last Friday was buzzing with good music, good decor, good drink and mostly stunning food for all ages. There were six of us that seated that evening and were done so in no time at all, I think it took them 2 minutes , and to be seated at a booth in that time for that many people , in a non reservation restaurant was a good start to me. The staff were welcoming and always at hand if you would ever want to be the embarrassed one to ask for that cheeky second burger. The cocktails were great, as they were stylish, fitting and by all means least tasty. The burgers and chips were the creme de le creme of the place. The 'Chefs Favourite ' which I had , had the brilliant combination of egg, beef and bacon, which all tied in better than anticipated . I also had a cheeky bite of the children's cheese toatie which was beautiful with the essence of truffle weaves through the stringy cheese. It was enough to make you want to change to the kids menu for a night. Other burgers were well presented, even though black plates I am not a fan of and especially not when you are in a restaurant that resembles the light level of a Hollister shop. When there you will have to try the crab starter, as well as the mushroom starter. If there was one downside to the restaurant the vegetarian options are not great at all, actually barely visible on the well laid out menus. This is a stylish, classic and simple place where everyone should try out for that good old burger and chips.

hipster vibe, food was just ok

By octrekster |

Either I don't get this place or you have to drink the hipster kool-aid to really love it. Pretty cool looking joint though. We got here around 6 on a Saturday night and there were tons of open tables. Filled up within an hour though, so plan accordingly. We tried the bleuprint burger (get it??) and butter lettuce salad. The burger was ok, but quite mild. With blue cheese and bacon I expected bigger flavors, but I didn't find it in this burger. The burger itself was juicy, just a tad bland for my taste. The salad was...well, a salad. Again, it was nothing remarkable. Machismo fries were good, but not really $9 good. They were smother in cheese, bacon, fried onions, and jalapenos. They make pretty good drinks though, and our server was a hoot. The bar seemed like a happening place, but it made me wonder if they were all just locals. I wouldn't drive too far out of my way to come here (again). Drop in if you are in the area though.

The KBBQ Burger....!!!!

By khnry |

Now there are many "Burgers & Beers" type of restaurants in LA. However, you cannot go wrong with Plan Check. They have three locations - Sawtelle, Fairfax, Downtown but this review will be for the Downtown location - especially because only the Downtown location carries this specific burger. I've pretty much tried almost all their burgers (PCB, Chef's favorite, Bleuprint, Pastrami Nosh, Sourthern Fry), but after I've tried this burger, there is absolutely no way I'm ordering anything else when I go to Plan Check. Came here on a Saturday afternoon around 1:30 PM to grab a burger and a brew with the guys and to watch some college basketball games that were going on. The last time I was here, I got ordered the KBBQ burger, medium rare, and added an egg on it. It was absolutely phenomenal. PHE-NO-ME-NAL I'm not a burger fanatic, but I do enjoy non-fast food burgers (Father's Office, Black Sheep, Bachi Burger being some of the places I've been to recently). The KBBQ burger just might be my favorite burger OF ALL TIME (I think). Therefore, I knew what I was getting, and in fact I loved this burger so much, I had to make sure all 6 of us ordered the same thing. KBBQ Burger - medium rare (add an egg, just do it) Now let me walk you through this burger. When the burger comes out, they have the top bun kind of leaning to the side. This is because they want you to soak in the beauty and glory of the awesome burger patty with "Kimcheese," some thinly sliced grilled pork belly, gochujang BBQ sauce, a bit of sprouts, and the perfectly cooked egg with the yolk just begging to be freed from the surface tension and run all over the burger. When you assemble the top bun back onto the burger, make sure you have your grip strategically positioned because you probably would not want to let it go, until there is nothing left to let go (and it can get a bit messy). The beef patty was very tender, and perfectly medium rare. I couldn't really notice the "kimchi" flavor in the cheese, but I definitely did notice the gochujang flavor in the BBQ sauce - deliciously tangy with a hint of that fermented funkiness (might even try making it and putting it on some ribs!). There was a very small portion of sprouts on it but I think this was more for color and texture than anything else. The pork belly is sliced pretty thinly so you might not notice it at first, but it really does add that extra meaty richness to the burger. Seriously, one of the best burgers I've had. Pastrami Cheese Fries Do order the pastrami cheese fries. Fries are done the only way they should be done, cooked in beef tallow. I mean it's fried potatoes with cheese and pastrami. You really shouldn't need much convincing there. The only thing I would say is that I wish there was a bit more of the pastrami topping because those cubes of thick-cut, soft, and tender pastrami were delicious. All I have to say is... just order the KBBQ Burger, cooked medium rare, and don't forget to add an egg on it.

Excellent small plates

By Brenna77 |

Casual business lunch - we ordered bleu cheese burger, and fried chicken small plate. This chicken is unbelievable - served with a little gravy underneath and sweet potato "jam" garnish. Try the pickles - all food tastes like homemade special stuff! Burger was great. Chicken was out of this world. We need to go back and try more dishes.

I visited the Fairfax location

By Wei-Li S |

I ordered the pastrami nosh on a whim and it was the best decision I could've made! The pastrami was chunky, rather than thinly sliced, but the meat was so tender that it practically melted in my mouth. It was, surprisingly, probably the best pastrami I have ever had (and I've had a few). The portions are just right and the prices are a bit on the high end, but overall a worthwhile dining experience. Can't wait to return to try the summer milk shakes!

Happy Hour

By David S |

My girlfriend, who lives in LA and I came here for the first time tonight. Cute set up with tables for two (that can be pushed together to accommodate larger groups). Food came quickly and tasted great. Beer was cold and they had many choices. Also, a plus, they have a back area for larger parties.

Best Burger Yet

By geckobvi |

Stopped in for a quick bite, while shopping and was more than pleasantly surprised by having the best hamburger yet since being in LA this month, their Truffle Mushroom Swiss Burger The sweet potato fries are good also, not sure they need the peach catsup. The place is small and has a very industrial look and feel. There are tables outside on Sawtelle, but it is a busy street and chose to sit inside. Service was fine and the proce what you would expect for a great burger.

Nice place

By travelagentreplies |

Had burgers and fries and beers. Good food, nice service and reasonably priced. Outdoor seating too.

Good food!

By Sandra M |

Visited Plan Check in Santa Monica last month. It's a smallish open air restaraunt and bar. Chicken and waffles was my choice for lunch. Was delicious.

Portobello mushroom appetizer to die for!!!!

By Randa J |

As a vegetarian at a burger joint where even the fries is cooked in beef fat, I ended up ordering the portobello appetizer as my meal. The portion was small, however, it was delicious!!!! It is sautéed in garlic sauce, with Swiss cheese, ANC crispy kale on top. It was perfect. I ended ordering the donut for dessert, but it was very greasy, I would pass on that. But still, overall, it was a great experience.

Easter brunch

By Rodney J |

I took my family to Easter brunch at Plan check fairfax . The service was attentive and helpful . The menu was great we tried almost everything on the brunch menu. The food was excellent. They also had bottomless drinks ( Bloody Mary, mimosa )and one other that I can’t recall but we tasted the 2 that I mentioned . It was a really fun experience. This is a go to restaurant for sure .

Great ambiance and food!

By J3263RSnicoleh |

We were recommended Plan Check by the Hotel staff at Holiday Inn Express and they were so right! It was a quick walk from our hotel. We were able to sit outside and enjoy lots of yummy items off of the appetizer list and they also had a great wine selection.

Wanna hear something OBNOXIOUS?!

By Craig W |

This was new to me, and it blew my mind. Food was decent, if $23 lunchtime hamburgers are your thing. Service was okay. Bill came - $88.00. I tipped $16.74, which is just over 19%. After my card had been rung up, I got a receipt back that included at the bottom the words "SUGGESTED ADDITIONAL TIP" along with some numbers (see photo). Am I insane, or is it wildly obnoxious and ungrateful to hand a slip of paper to customers who've just given a generous tip suggesting they give even more?? Will not return!

Southern Chicken sandwich YUMMY

By Lackerfollow |

I tried Pan Check Kitchen on the advice of a fellow chicken sandwich connoisseur. Delicious! It did not disappoint and we will be back to try it again as well as the burgers which also get rave reviews.

Noisy Casual Comfort

By JAZ65_11 |

Unusual food combinations that are really good plus delicious burgers and crullers to die for. Busy with great service!

Outstanding food and atmosphere

By traveltime111 |

GREAT FOOD AND FUN! This is now one of my favorite restaurants in LA. Plan is just North of Japantown on Sawtelle going towards santa monica blvd. The atmosphere is a combination of very chilled out, relaxed, fun and classy. There was a nice mix of couples on dates to regulars at the bar and tourists. As an aside, the heated outside seating was the best I've experienced in awhile...super comfortable. Manager Katie and server Nick(from Chicago and Seattle respectively) attended to me and they were really cool to talk to and very on point professionally...2 of the best restaurant staff I have encountered in LA this year. If only most restaurant staff was of the calibre of these folks. I was really hungry and ordered the oysters, Artisan cheese board, rare grilled yellowfin tuna and a Cruller donut for dessert. My drink was the Tropical Thunder(vodka mango lime salt). Everything was superb; the big standouts being the oysters and yellowfin tuna. The Kusshi(Japanese for "precious")oysters were very plump, fresh and full of flavor-best I've had in LA this year. They are farm raised off Vancouver Island. The rare tuna came with a delicious citron tartar sauce that really sang my song...excellent, unique and memorable. The tuna also comes with nice sized tempura rock shrimp which were also winners. The Cruller donut with berries and tropical thunder were exceptional as well. The menu is very extensive with many unique, quirky offerings. Plan goes on my top ten list of best casual fine dining and bar venues in Los Angeles. I plan to check them out as much as possible for great food and fun atmosphere.

Scrumptious!

By DK_ninjaaaaa |

Fun place to eat, cool vibes and friendly staff. Solid beer menu and while I did not partake, it does look like they make some excellent craft cocktails too. Chefs burger is ridiculously good and the culler for dessert is definitely worth trying. It's a little pricey but not unreasonable. Parking stinks but that's standard for LA. Check this place out

Excellent Nouvelle American/Asian Fusian Cuisine

By micheletauber |

Great Restaurant in terms of the food. Horrible parking, although they offer valet for $5.00 bucks. Also, it's really, really noisy and there is almost always a a twenty or thirty minute wait. However, all that written the food is excellent. I had the Brisket and French Fries with a a Kale Salad. It was excellent. My friend got the Battered Chicken Burger, also excellent. Don't miss out on the Donut Desserts. They are great.

Amazing Burgers and Beer!

By Cissy M |

I saw the reviews for this place on TripAdvisor but also asked the gentleman at the front desk of our hotel where he recommended for a great burger. Both were spot on. These are burgers with an added touch of awesome. We had a PCB and a Bleuprint Burger. The PCB is basically a typical burger, but they've added their own touch to the sauces and pickles. The Bleuprint is a blue cheese burger with other awesome toppings. We split an order of fries. The burgers are cooked to order and they are delicious. They also have some great looking handcrafted cocktails and beers. I had a wheat beer and it was nice. The atmosphere is fun. The service was great, very attentive and eager to suggest menu items. They have outdoor seating which is where we sat, the inside was pretty noisy. I would highly recommend this place if you want a casual meal that is absolutely delicious.

Great Experience

Good burgers and beer

Nice selection of artery-clogging burgers along with interesting beers and a decent wine list. Try the veggie chips.

A Boutique burger

By BXzilla |

A burger is a burger? Not art Plan Check. They make one of a kinds and give them names like Chefs special, etc. A worthwhile trip to Little Osaka on Sawtelle. And lets not forget their delicious waffle shaped fries.

Expensive burgers

By OCDane |

This place have different kind of burgers than other places, they are good but too expensive. $14 for burger + $6 for sweet fries makes it an expensive lunch.

One of the best burgers I've ever had--great cocktails

By emgaila |

Love this spot in downtown LA--food is superb. Veggie taco I had was tiny, but flavorful--added a slider and was impressed with how flavorful the patty was. My husband ordered a burger, and I ate some of his, too. Strong cocktail game and helpful waitress--will definitely be back.

Beautifully cooked burgers

By Alexandra A |

I had the mushroom truffle burger, cooked to medium rare. The beef was fall apart tender, and the buns were toasted to perfection. The cheese and mushroom complemented the burger very well. We also had the sweet potato fries, which came with a peach dipping (I don't think the peach accompanies the fries too well though). I also had the stuffed mushroom which was decent. The star of the meal was the burger, which was very appropriately portioned. The restaurant had heating units outside, giving the restaurant a warm ambience, perfect if you want to catch up with friends over some drinks. Highly recommended.

Very Enjoyable Experience

By Jerry K |

I happened onto the the Plan Check Kitchen and Bar for dinner. I really enjoyed their small plate menu and assortment of tasty beers. the service was attentive, friendly and just outstanding. Jonathon, my waiter, could not do enough to make this such an enjoyable experience for me.

Good food if you happen to be in the area

By PrncsJsmine |

The food here is pretty good comfort food, I got the chicken platter with the okra. Juicy chicken, don't even really like okra but it tasted good, and the gravy was good too. Service is not so great, I think there were only 3 other groups in the place and it still took 15 mins for the waitress to come even bring us water. Price I wouldn't say is worth it for the platter, but decent food

Great comfortable restaurant where I've never had a bad meal

By Gary E |

This restaurant is local to where my daugter lives on Sawtelle. It is convienenty with great service and food far superior to any bar/restaurant I've come across. Outstanding selection of dinners or lunches. Inside or outside.

Sooo Good...Wish it Was Closer

By Robonski |

I love, love, loved my meal at Plan Check! I ordered the plan check burger + sweet potato fries + iced tea. The total was about $34 with tip. I was so insanely full after the meal. My friend ordered the Plan Check Burger + regular fries. She loved her meal as well. I thought parking was easy around the restaurant (but there is a 30 minute time limit - which wasn't a problem because we were in a big hurry and ate our meal quickly). The area is in a bit of a neighborhood vibe, which was good. The restaurant isn't too big, but we were able to get a seat at the bar on a Saturday evening. I would definitely recommend Plan Check and will be going there again!

Great Food and Drinks!

By WSUtraveller1324 |

I moved from LA in June, and this was one of the last places I ate before leaving. I have pretty much at some point have tried everything on the menu. My favorites are the burgers. The PC Burger or Chefs Burger are amazing. They run specials all the time, and are great options. Anytime of day they are great. If there is a wait, grab a beer and wait outside. It is definitely worth the time!

Yes!!!!! Yum and YES!

I ordered from here on Grub Hub one night. I got the crab dip and the salmon salad it was so good that I went back the next day and had the burger with pig candy I asked the server how he could work there because the food was so good he said the food was one of the reasons he did work there! I went back the following weekend with some friends and the drinks were out of this world! I had the Kentucky Bubble Bath ...the drinks were so unique and refreshing I felt like I was on an episode of Star Trek. I went back another time and ordered the fried chicken one friend had the fried chicken sandwich and another have the sweet potato fries and a burger for some reason the fried chicken is an entrée was not as enjoyable as the sandwich for some reason. Nonetheless all of the food was eaten. Great staff friendly service this is my spot!

Plan Check is a restaurant typical in design of the new "IN" 30 something LA eateries. It is small, modern, chic and serves great food. Most of the offerings are your typical burgers or Fried Chicken or ice cream soda but done in an adventurous way. Pcb (plan Check Burger) americanized dashi cheese, ketchup leather, schmaltz onions, mixed pickles, crunch bun. or Adulteration tito's vodka, any of our housemade sodas.Cured And Preserved Meats miso mustard, smoked almonds: soppressata piccante, lonzino, duck breast ham. The desert doughnuts are to die for. For a young family Plan Check is a wonderful place. Food the kids will enjoy. Food the adults can enjoy. Plan Check has a number of LA locations. The Sawtelle location is on the edge of what was the Japanese section of LA. Many Japanese and Korean restaurants are a few streets away. A few caveats. Near meal time a very busy restaurant. They don't take reservations. Area parking is limited.

Enjoyable Meal

3.5 stars. Had a spicy pickle (yum), fries and chef's burger. All very good, but maybe a little rich for lunch. I was expecting the menu to be a bit bigger - it's mainly burgers.

Great hamburgers

Busy place. Arrive early or expect a wait. Hamburgers are great, smoky chicken and waffle chicken also deserve a thumbs up. Happy hour ends at 6 and couldn't smooze a beer price lower when arrived shortly after six.

First Time and Will Always Do

It's one of the very unique burger taste, has a special patty with a very soft bun. One thing to work on is the look and feel of the restaurant since it doesn't really look good. French fries is an opportunity too. Rather than that thumbs up it is definitely one of the best burgers that I have ever taste.

Excellent burgers

Great place for burgers. The Bleu cheese with bacon was one of the best burgers I’ve ever had. The crunch bun was delightful. The honey siracha chicken burger was equally delicious - bursting with flavour. There are gluten free options too. The miso glazed salmon was also very popular. Friendly attentive service.

We were driving down Sawtelle looking to try a new place for lunch, happy to have ended up here. The menu seemed short on options but we were able to pick out two relatively safe items to try. The crab dip was really good, as was the plan check burger. We asked for all toppings on the side including the ketchup leather, which was unique but we decided it was too sweet to put on the burger. Prices are on the high side for the portion size, but well worth it in my opinion.

Overrated Over priced

Fries rendered in suet? While the fries are good at Plan Check, they are NOT great. The burger was good but not a over 10 dollar burger. I have had many burgers under 6 dollars much better. Trendy is the word for this place. Its is pricey, our lunch bill was 85 dollars. That is 2 burgers, sweet potato fries and desert with one glass of wine. Really? Yelp gives this place glowing reviews because simply, Plan Check held a yelp event.

Almost a 5 Star...

but every time I go, I end up eating too much and feel disgusting. Full, unique, juicy burgers. Great sides. And lovely beer choices. All in all, a great meal.

Home Made Ketchup - Who Knew?

By Richard R |

Large party seated on stools at high table between the bar and booths. Menu is very creative, with many novel offerings and different presentations of standards. Comfort food including burgers of very high quality beef, turkey, veg, with excellent buns and superb fries. But the home made ketchup steals the show. What a difference fresh makes. Other dishes are very appealing, including the newest topping: fried egg. Try pickles as appetizer. Cheeses are very appealing and not too challenging. Salads sound familiar, but sparkle with unusual tastes hidden amongst the beets and arugula. Portions are more than adequate. Signs promote modestly priced wines, but place and menu say "Beer!". IPAs and unusual brews. Decor is casual, modern, but the stools keep you shifting from cheek to cheek. Sit in a booth. Service is topnotch.

Great service Pricy Food

By PineappleShagette |

Yeah I know you get what you get when entering Hipsterville Skater Heaven aka Fairfax. The service was GREAT...wait staff totally on it but when we received our burgers on the tiniest skillet I have ever seen, I knew I was going to leave hungry and my wallet a lot lighter. The food was good, we had a burger, fries, their version of a veggie chip with a tiny side of "avocado sauce" but all the portions were well, small and with every thing we ordered (it's all a-la-carte) we got some more sauce which was again good but when we got the dessert two "cruller" donuts in cream with a dash of whip cream on top for 6.00 well then I was just over it..my friends from the Westside love this place but for me it was meh. I prefer Umami if I am going to pay the price to cross over to Hipsterville.

Great atmosphere!

The atmosphere is very hip. The food is great. We liked the crupper donut! Too good! I also enjoyed the southern fry. Check out the menu and try this place out!

Worth a stop

The dish that made me come to try this place was the fried jidori chicken thighs with sweet potato jam, smoked milk gravy and pickled okra for $13. It is a greasy, creamy, sweet combo which was not at all my preference for fried chicken, but I can see how it would appeal to those who like their fried foods with a sweet and creamy accompaniment. My favorite part of the dish was the pickled okra because it cut through all the grease. The chicken was very moist and had a nice flavor but as Roux said in "Chocolat" to the various chocolates offered, "Not my favorite". The table seated next to me lived in the neighborhood and as regulars, they insisted that I try the sweet potato fries with peach ketchup, and after one bite, I was glad that they were seated next to me. These were the best sweet potato fries I have ever eaten! A perfectly crispy exterior with soft centers and perfect salt, they were good by themselves, but a dip in the peach ketchup made this a hot, sweet, salty, tangy combination that was addictive. Available for only $6 a plate, this is an affordable addiction. The freshly made crullers with freshly whipped cream and sliced bananas ended the meal on a wonderfully sweet note for $6. If you love churros, imagine 3 huge round cinnamon sugar churros on a pile of cream. These crullers were actually the reason I tasted the sweet potato fries because I swapped with the neighboring table since there is no way to eat more than one unless you either eat nothing else or have a huge capacity for sweets!

One of the best burgers I've ever had.

By Brandon-H8888 |

Bleu print burger. It was amazing! One of the best tasting burgers I've had. Fries were $5 and very small, but tasty and come with homemade ketchup. Our waitress was great, very friendly and attentive. Outdoor seating was pretty nice, though some seats provide zero shade.

Crazy Good!!!!!!!!!

This is an excellent joint with mind blowing burgers. I dined during the Dine LA event and was blown away by the Wild Boar Sloppy Joes! Went beautifully with my root beer float. They also offer a version with actual craft beer. Check out this place and ask them to explain the ketchup leather. Super cool!!

Ok, but you can find a better burger

By sixxmom |

This is an interesting restaurant in what is complete contrast to most other restaurants in Los Angeles. The food is "heavy" such that you really can't eat or shouldn't eat the whole meal. Their signature burger has ketchup leather (think fruit roll ups) cheese that has been made crispy, beef patty, a fried egg etc. it tasted very good but 3 hours later I was still feeling uncomfortable from eating an average sized hamburger. The food is served on teeny tiny cast iron plates, it's difficult to cut the burger. The noise in this place is incredible and they weren't that busy when we went at 6pm, I can't imagine how loud it would be when it is full. Ok but not great in my book.
