Another Houston beer brewery but with an Aussie theme

By Ciahasher |

With the explosion of breweries in Houston, each one has to offer some feature to distinguish themselves from the others. In the case of Platypus, it was go Australian. It sort of works. This place has both an indoor and outdoor area with plenty of parking nearby. Beers have Australian themed names but none of them really stand out in my opinion. Food was so so. You can get meat pies, etc If going here for the first time, the place faces center street even though it has a Washington street address. So be aware of that. It's in an industrial area. Lots of better brewery places in Houston

Cowboys & Rebecca!

By Stacey R |

Such a great spot to watch the game (Go Cowboys!) and enjoy some good beer and delicious shots made by the beautiful, Rebecca! Make sure you ask for her and let her take care of you if you come.

Good beers, good bar food and next to the Winter Street Studios!

By Lynn M |

We wanted to go see an artist at the Winter Street Studios who specializes in mosaics, so we timed ourselves to go to the Second Saturday open studios yesterday. We had mapped out some local breweries based on a recent article in the Edible magazine that we picked up at Whole Foods. Both Platypus and Holler breweries are very close to the studios. We selected to visit Platypus because they also offer food and we were going to going to the Winter Street Studios around lunchtime, so we knew our stomachs would be rumbling around the same times our thirst would need to be quenched, too. (Mid October in Houston this year has been just like August - ugh. Hey, more reason to drink good cold beer, right!) I liked the fact that Platypus (who Sigma Breweries also told us about, in edition to the Edible magazine) had the Australian connection. Let's check this out! Nice ambiance and I love the wall décor of having the Australian flag next to the Lone Star State flag. Nice! We each had a four-glass flight, selecting each what appealed to us. (The husband was getting over a cold, so I was not willing to share on this adventure.) All of the beers we tried were great. I had three "dark" beers and the Ranga, a red beer. All were excellent. We also liked the Fig beer and the Stars beer. For food, we tried the cheese bites that came with a jalapeno ranch dipping sauce. These were really, really good. They are little fried squares filled with cheese. They came out piping hot. We liked them so much, we ordered a second one, but they were out. So we ordered the pretzel bites, which were also good, but a bit heavier. A guy near us had a wonderful looking dish which turned out to the be potato skins (I asked). Next time. All the folks behind the bar were very attentive, very friendly.

Great place to sit back, relax and enjoy a cold beer

Great atmosphere, good food and great beers make this a must stop in Houston. If you are looking for a good pub with an outdoor area then this is the place.

Great venue for a group!

By clpayne |

Thanks for hosting the San Jac Corvette Club! We had a group of 20 and you were very easy to work with! You had our large table set up and ready to go when we arrived. There was a slight delay in getting our orders because another group order got sent to the kitchen in front of us. You let us know, though, so all was good. Communication is everything! I think our group may have tried everything on your menu except pizza! :) We had an Aussie in our group and she said your sausage roll and Aussie burger were very authentic! Kudos! Pretzel bites with the sweet "honey"? sauce is my favorite! Outdoor and indoor seating. Pet friendly. Music (a bit too loud), games (think life size connect 4 and video), and even room to accommodate the hoola hoops we brought with us! PLENTY of parking! That's often an issue for our group when we go places, but there's a LARGE well done lot behind the brewery. Be sure to check out their daily specials such as Steak Night or Fri Fish and Chips night. I believe there is a party room upstairs, but we did not use that. We were a group of 20 and they allowed us all to order from the full menu. They also did a good job with separate checks for each couple in our group. Last but not least they even donated a tshirt for a prize for our hoola hoop contest. THANK YOU Playtpus Brewery for hosting the San Jacinto Corvette Club!

A very nice surprise

By Lauri F |

Nine beers and food. I had thr Ranga red which was really good but didn't eat. Cool taproom with funky music and an attentive, friendly staff. I could listen to the Australian owner's accent all day! It's only a few months old, but this place is here to stay! Ample free parking a nice bonus.

Did not know it existed, but glad we found it

By Doug S |

The four of us (wife, 2 kids, and I) stopped by Platypus Brewing after visiting another local brewery in the downtown Houston area this past Saturday. One of the employees of the establishment was outside boiling crawfish when we pulled up, as the smell (and it smelled good) gave us an indication before we got to see what was going on. The outdoor patio as well as the indoor seating area was packed!! However, we found an area to sit when we first walked in. Both the outdoor patio, which was covered, and indoor seating had clear visibility to numerous television sets that were televising some of the college basketball games. On the beer side of things, my wife ordered the Freckled Dingo Pale Ale (I think) and I had The Ranga Red Ale. Both were good. It has been a while since I've had a red ale and I will say that I did enjoy The Ranga! We did order food while we were there. My wife, daughter, and son split the Three Little Pig Nachos and Pan-Asian Sliders, and I had the Fish and Chips. I did not get a chance to sample their sliders; however, did sample the Three Little Pig Nachos. My wife and son enjoyed them, but our daughter and I did not. They (Nachos) consisted of Chicharrons, Sambal Beer Cheese, Smoked Pork, Bacon, Pico, and Cotija. The Pan-Asian Sliders were made from Local Beef, Pickled Pork, Sambal Beer Cheese, and a side of Leekchi -House Togarashi Fries. The three of them seemed to enjoy the sliders. My fish and chips were really good! The platter came with two fried filets of Barramundi (which is Sea Bass), Spent Grain Batter, Catsup, and Australian Ale -House Togarashi Fries. The Catsup almost tasted like a cocktail dipping sauce, I wasn't too crazy about that. The fish were piping hot. Our son did notice the grain in the batter and was asking what that was. We did not stay long although had the weather been a little nicer, we may have decided to stick around.

Great beer!

By Michael A |

Have visited this brewery over 10 times. Never disappoints. Great beer, food, and staff! Always appreciate this diamond in the rough

Great pints and great food...

By Jim D |

My first visit was for dinner after work on a Saturday. It was a lively crowd on a cool night... half of the people were inside and half were out on the patio. The Freckled Dingo pale ale made all my troubles go away. The fish and chips features their own home-made potato fries that are worth the trip. It was served with a dill sauce instead of traditional tartar sauce. It was delicious. I can't wait to go back.

Wences’ review.

Trendy spot outside the midtown area

By 116Burch |

We stopped in on a Saturday afternoon for some food and a few beers. We have been seeing their beer around town and wanted to check the place out. Its built into an old warehouse off of Washington street. We liked the old charm of the building, combined with some modern updates. Trendy type spot, looks like the owners are Australian, they had a few flags ups. Plus the platypus is native to eastern Australia. The place is a combination of indoor and outdoor seating with some TV's and bar area. Wait staff was friendly, they also come out to the tables to check if we needed anything. We thought the beer was good. We also tried some appetizers from the food menu, quesadilla and humus dip. Both were very good. They have a few board games to borrow but other then that, not very kid friendly. They had some parking outside and on the street, it was pretty full when we were there. We would stop in more if we lived a little closer.

Football Watch Party Spot

By Curious49262710037 |

Came for a football watch party in the lounge which was the perfect spot. Platypus employees had quick service to keep the party going

Unfriendly and unhelpful staff

By Kattraveller20 |

In a good location, so we could walk here. Visited as part of a local brewery tour event. Staff were dismissive and unfriendly. Not at all engaging. One of the party had visited twice before and said the staff were the same on both occasions. Doesn’t have the Australian vibe their marketing suggests. Beer was fine but none of our party will be returning.

Great Weekend Afternoon Stop

By Gary S |

Stopped by here to check out the beer and food on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. Both were great. Enjoyed the Chain Rattler Imperial Stout. The Fish and Chips, Burger, and Grilled Cheese are fantastic.

Good food, great beer

By The Whiner Diner |

This is a fun, trendy place to visit at any time of day. I only popped in for a quick drink, and was introduced to the place while staying with family recently. It turned out to be a real revelation. The main bar is quite small and basic, but there is more room outside, with plenty of tables out front, so the place can get pretty busy. What I liked is that kids are welcome, so it is very family friendly - increasingly rare these days. As this venue is run by Australians it seems appropriate that Australia is the theme. Hence the name, I guess. The philosophy of the place is quite obvious with the microbrewery clearly on show, and memorabilia on the walls (see pictures). There is a great selection of beers on tap and there is a canning machine on site so you can take your choice away to enjoy at home. There are theme evenings, with a surf & turf night, a fish & chips night, and even a geek night - alternatively known as a quiz night or trivia night. As always, I had to check out the food too. The menu is great for light bites and sandwiches or more substantial burgers. The house fries with a bacon and cheese topping were excellent, and the portions were enough to satisfy any appetite (see pictures). Overall, there is a friendly, informal, fun vibe, and recommended at any time of day. Loved it.

G'day, mate! I'll have a pie and a pint!

By The Beer Man |

Platypus Brewing is one of the newer breweries in Houston. It is located near the Heights south of I10. This one has an Aussie touch. The food, specially the pies are down under amazing! They also figured out the beer that will have me boomeranging back for more. I really enjoyed the Troppo, American Wheat Ale with Australian Mango and Passion Fruit.

Not just great beer

By Brady B |

Of course, this is a great place to grab a beer, but the food delicious as well. Last time I went the monthly special was Spicy Thai lemongrass chicken and rice. I never have to wait too long on my food and the bartenders are always attentive.

Saved my BUTT!

By Phanie |

I recently went to Platypus Brewing for the first time for my husband’s 40th birthday party. It was all so last minute due to The Astros games. Chris, Katy, Chico, James and the rest of the staff were so helpful with explaining the menu, holding the cake for me and helping all of our guests. Prior to this, I had always wanted to go to Platypus but had never been. Our group agreed all expectations were exceeded and they all talked about returning. So relieved and happy this worked out. I did very little work for my husband’s birthday. I would highly recommend.

Open for Drive Through Pickup During Pandemic Call Ahead. Try the chicken sandwich.

By Bob1775 |

They have really good beer here with base of permanent beers then a selection of rotating beer. Food is outstanding, chicken sandwich and the pretzel bites are my favorite. The fish and chips are very good. A foodie buddy of mine insists they are the best fish and chips in Houston and he is very particular. The Three Little Piggies are real good as well...I suggest ordering it as half and half....half fries half chicharrones. They are sort of like nachos with beer cheese and pulled pork. They have the best steak night in Houston on Wednesday’s. For $20 you get steak with a couple of shrimp on top, a side (the fries are out of this world as are the roasted Brussels sprouts) and a pint of beer. Service is great and the staff are friendly and remember you.

Brewery now offers Sunday brunch!

By Ciahasher |

I last visited this place about 8 months ago and I wasn’t that impressed. This time, I went for their Sunday brunch which they just started offering a couple of weeks ago. They don’t have a large selection of items to choose from but they are all pretty good. I had the “mamas toast” which is a variation of Texas toast. Portions are quite generous so unless you are very hungry , you will be asking for a doggy bag. You can also get sparkling wine now in addition to their beers. No mimosas though although I think they will offer these in the near future. I had their dazzler beer which is the lowest alcohol content they carry (around 4.5%). It pairs well with the mamas toast. Service was good. Staff was friendly. This was a much better experience than my last visit. I’ll be back again and it won’t be another 8 months

Super Fun!

By Kalya C |

The place was very pleasant to see. The atmosphere was fun and the service was amazing. We had Jessie as our server and he was awesome and fun. Thank you for the experience!

Great family friendly brewery

By Four Points Travel |

We came in because we got a coupon at the St. Patrick's Day Parade just to try it out and we LOVED it. The beer is great with a good variety, the Australian vibe is cool, and the food is delicious. They are welcoming and accommodating to kiddos with plenty for them to do and eat. Give this cozy brewery a try, you will not be disappointed!

Craft beer experience

By latingypsy |

We are fans of craft breweries. Since we are in town we checked out this new place. Nice setup indoor and outdoor. Good place to hangout and drink and eat. Tours are done by request. The owner gave us our tour. Really nice man from Australia.

Better than G'day,Great day for Platypus!

By SuperACamille |

Located just off Washington Ave. Platypus brewery is a great new find in the neighborhood. The brews are cold and innovative. The staff friendly, attentive and knowledgable an the food is pretty darn good too! It manages to be both cool for adults and great for families.Very kid friendly in a cool kid way. Like only cool families with cool toddlers frequent the place. Somehow it works. Had the spent beer grain pretzel bites, the lamb skewers, the salad and the brussel sprouts -which will make you think they did something evil and unhealthy to them to make them taste SO good! Seriously people, order a large if you have more than two people, else fight over them...Two thumbs up And the beer is good too.We came for beer and stayed for dinner!

Great Micro brew restaurant.

By salbrecht2019 |

Great place to hang out after work or on the weekend. Lots of outdoor seating. Good food and a great beer. Wednesday night is Surf N Turf 12oz rib eye grilled to order with Chef John’s special rub, layered with prawns, a choice of sides (brussel sprouts, salad, fries or a loaded baked potato) and a pint of your favorite beer. I think it is $12. Thursday night is burger night also great. Relax place and casual dress. You have to try it out.

Excellent craft beers and pies

By Dinesh A |

Had a couple of excellent craft beers when catching up with an Australian friend in Houston. The pies were absolutely excellent. Atmosphere nice and relaxed. I would highly recommend Platypus Brewing. It was the highlight of my visit to Houston.

👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

By Brandy L |

This was a fun place with a great atmosphere, friendly staff, and good drinks! Will definitely come back again! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Great Fresh Food snd Brew

By Nancy L |

My 2nd visit here and I decided I needed to give a review. I get my car serviced st Firestone down the street and rather than wait there, I walk to Platypus. The inside is big and cool. Big screens but no volume ( and the Texans were playing). Music in the background. Great beer selection! Staff are friendly and helpful. This time I ordered the Chicken Lettuce wraps (on their Summer Fresh Menu. They are excellent. All of their menu is made fresh on the premises with fresh ingredients and you can taste the difference.

Excellent ales

By Kokopetiyotl |

I discovered Platypus through a random bar tap beer that proposed the Freckled Dingo. Turned mad about this one. Kept asking Specks about bottled or canned anything Platypus until a bar tender told me the brewery was in town and also proposed food! Great ales, interesting part of Houston the terrasse has a view on the skyline. It is horribly noisy inside and outside. I feel for the people working there. A little something to disminish the noise volume and they'll merit a 5 plus grade 😋

Excellent brewery

By lucasashby |

Excellent brewery, it is one of the more unique themed ones in the city. It’s great to visit since it is near a couple of others as well. I recommend buying their beer signs too!

Good beer, food good, Nice location

By DutchTX |

In case you like a good beer, and some nice Aussie style Pub food, this is the place to be. Parking is really good, the atmosphere is fun. They have a nice outdoor covered patio. The beer flight is a good place to start to enjoy the different kind of beers they offer and brew locally.

Drinks on the patio

By Elizabeth N |

Juju is great! Ask for her! Great patio seating with fans for when it gets too hot in the summer heat. They have stickers for a $1!!

Great Time!

By ElConquistador000 |

This place doesn't look like much but the food and beer are outstanding. We met the owner and he is awesome. I had the fish and chips and my wife had the Aussie meat pie. Bothe were outstanding.

That was fun!

By Tania178 |

Loved the place, the names and the beer! Great variety, warm personnel. The level of the music appropriate, same for the temperature.

Great Beer Messy Tables

By kipp930 |

No question the beer is great! The staff could light a fire under thier tails and clean up more deligently. I’ve visited 4 times and every occasion the place is messy and staff is hanging out. The food is very good match to the pub feel

Good Beer, Aussie-inspired menu, large patio...

By JVAuditMom |

*Full Disclosure: I am a former coworker of owners Sean Hanrahan and his wife Rachna.* My husband is a beer aficionado...likes to try new beers, craft beers, home brews, etc. We recently moved back to Houston from Albuquerque, NM, where a craft beer & brewery explosion had taken place. When we heard that some of my former coworkers had opened Platypus Brewing, we knew we needed to visit. My husband wanted to try the beers...I wanted a good Aussie meat pie or sausage roll! After his most recent return from his work rotation in Africa, we drove into Houston and had lunch at Platypus. We started with the seasoned pretzel balls with the beer cheese fondue dip and mustard dip. I loved the proper pretzel texture and the beer cheese fondue dip, and my husband just wanted to bring home a vat of the mustard dip! I ordered the Aussie Sausage Roll (I'd not had a proper Aussie sausage roll since I was in Melbourne in 2002...). My husband ordered the Aussie Meat Pie. Both plates came with sides of homemade french fries and thick, Aussie-style tomato (ketchup) sauce. The meat pie had a hearty crust and a good brown gravy with the meat inside. The french-fried potatoes were thick cut and seasoned well. My sausage roll was in a very light & flaky pastry crust. The meat was well cooked, and just lightly seasoned. (This sausage is different from southern US breakfast sausage that can be very seasoned, and from an Italian-style sausage or German-style sausage that both have different flavor notes.) Some diners might consider it bland, but it is meant to be eaten with the thin-sliced onions and the thick, seasoned tomato sauce. I LOVED the thick Aussie-style ketchup sauce! My husband drank a pint of the new Stars At Night Coffee Porter and I had the H-Town Enigma Brown Ale. I am sensitive to yeasts, and choose my beers accordingly. Neither of us are big fans of all the IBUs of IPAs and the like, so we will probably steer away from those. With 5-6 staple beers and various specials through the year, I know Platypus will keep us coming back. As a holiday gift, I enrolled my husband as a Fellow Platypi and he received a shirt, stainless steel growler of his fave brew, and will get invites to brewery events & tastings. We look forward to more beer & food offerings from Platypus!

Great place to mingle

By Rod H |

Here with Star Status! I enjoyed each time that I have came to Platypus. Rebecca was a great server.

A craft brewery that serves its own food

By Anti-Pa |

The beers were really good and the food was tasty. It was really crowded so the noise levels were really high. They have indoor and patio seating. They serve wine as well but it was really expensive. The portion of the fresh-made pretzels was small for the price. I think they were $9.00 and there was about 10 small squares. Maybe the kitchen was so busy they were shorting folks, I have no idea. The staff were friendly and the place was clean.

Phenomenal environment

By Nihir T |

James and the team are absolutely tremendous! They got the game we wanted to watch on a TV in no time and were extremely helpful with which beers to drink.

Great beer!

This place was so awesome! Very clean, and staff was friendly! Outdoor space was ideal for large groups or a couple with their dog. Very relaxed atmosphere with great selection. Oysters were great also!

Best beer we've had in Houston.

By Athena D |

The staff is very friendly. Beer and food is great! They also have a shaded patio you can bring your dog. Overall great place to spend an afternoon!

Great beer and unique food

By Matthew A |

We first heard about this brewery at the Wild West brewfest, I was happy to see that it was open during the week so we came in while in town for other things. Their beer is "Brewed with Texan heart and Australian soul". They have an interesting story which can be found on their website. We tried almost all the beers which ranged from good to great. The staff was super friendly and the food was good as well.

Fun vibes

By Michael T |

Great vibes and Houston sports/rugby, friendly staff, and tasty food (fish and chips were great!). Would definitely come again!

Underwhelmed

By 2fridad |

With this brewery being right in the mix of things on Washington near B&B Butchers, I expected to be blown away by the craft beer but I was totally underwhelmed. The environment is great, lots of activity, available food items are good, the picnic tables on the patio are fun for visiting with friends and for kids to run around but the beer was a bit disappointing.

Awesome Aussie pub and restaurant

By Paul |

The beers are amazing. The Bobby Dazzler is my favourite. You can actually get real Australian meat pies which are wonderful! The fish and chips are also excellent.

Awesome Brewery +

By Michele L |

Stopped in for a pre dinner drink, two of us had sparkling wine and two beers, bobby dazzler a blond ale and the box kick an IPA -I love a hoppy beer! The beer was terrific flavor awesome! We will be back! Love the outside area picnic benches. The food looks great so will have to try next time. Stop in your sure to have a nice relaxing time with a cold one! Several to try, even the sampler tray.

Great Beer, Aussie-inspired menu, & large covered patio...

By Larry G |

Recently opened brewery that is truly awesome. They bring an Aussie flavor to the beer and atmosphere. The beers are great. The food fantastic. The staff is super friendly & the covered patio is great when its a nice afternoon or evening. I have been many times since they opened and it's quickly become my favorite Houston brewery.

Great cozy rugby-themed little brewery

By Maps57822234174 |

The staff is very nice and funny, the beer is good and the dessert is fancy! I love the rugby theme and merch (much nicer than the usual football theme) - more merch please!

Great Beer, Service and Venue

By Juliana C |

Such friendly staff and great location to just sit and enjoy a beer or stay and watch a game. Has both an inviting indoor and outdoor space and full draft list that should offer something for everyone. Didn't get a chance to order food but they also have a varied menu. Look forward to visiting again!

Pre-game Beer and Food

By Brian W |

We chose this place as a good spot prior to going to see USA - Scotland rugby. I was impressed when I tried to book a table and got a response at 0730 hrs with a reservation for a table right in front of the big screen - couldn’t have asked for more, even though we didn’t need it since we were going to the game. When we got there early we found the table waiting for us. The food. We ordered fish and chips and sausage roll and chips. Both were excellent. The batter on the fish was perfect and the pastry around the sausage meet was great. The chips (fries) were just right. And they even had malt vinegar. The beer. We had the 6 sample pack to try and, for me, 2 of the 6 were great. The other 4 were good, but not to my taste. Overall, a great first impression with a good vibe and we’ll be back.

Great venue- great views of skyline

By trymahjong |

Just opened, got to talk to their brewmaster and think all is well and will improve. Quirky little munchiesperhaps a bit pricey on small shared plates- kale chips mega spicy without the siracha dip-- oh my! Try the shaded patio-- the city scape of Houston looks amazing.

Good place

By AXH |

This is a good brewery that serves a limited food menu. The staff is very friendly and the venue has a dog friendly patio. Worth to visit.

Okay Brewery Stop with an Aussie Flare

By 42kRun |

The beer selection was average and the brewing operations somewhat hidden. There was inside and outside seating. They seemed to have activities for runners and other groups

Good food and beer!

By Karen Savage |

Good variety of beers and love the names. The good was great. We only tried some snacks. The spelt pretzels were interesting and quite tasty. They don’t have traditional pretzel texture but are fluffy. They come with mustard and some queso. Crispy well seasoned fries. The jalapeño ranch with the fried cheese bites was delicious. I would go back to this place and try some other beers and food.

Ok Aussie beer joint

By Stevey1631 |

First time visit. Beer nice , food so so. Inside quite loud. We liked it but nothing stood out . The guys had the steak pies which were ok. The girls lamb skewers & Brussels sprouts and a salad with chicken. Again ok.

Didn't Catch the Aussie, DEF Casual!

By Jamie K |

Platypus Brewing was... Okay. It is definitely for the get your hands dirty, no pretense, come as you are, very casual place. The environment: Indoor is small, there is a bar, board games, and a game room. Outdoor pavilion/patio is huge! Many tables. Lots of parking available. Great for good weather days! Tables outside are picnic tables. Food: Good flavor, mostly sandwiches, or hand held food, and definitely greasy... In a good way. Had the quesadilla with chicken, it was only but tasted good. Fries were cut and decent in taste, crispy. Chicken wings were tasty, crispy outside, moist inside. Drinks are focused on bottles. No straws. I drank my tap water out of the cafeteria style thick glass that doesn't break if it falls cuz its more so hard plastic. Service: Laid back. Two people serving 15 tables, so a little slow, but the server checked in and got the order right. Music: Uh... It wasn't overbearing, got lost in the background, and I forgot it was playing. Geeky Trivia: I went on a Tuesday, and it was trivia night, geeky trivia. I thought it was just a joke, but I believe ONLY true geeks, pen pocket protector, kind souls would enjoy it. At one point, the clues were popular songs played with kazoos. Make note! Please 'Like,' if helpful.

Experience

If you’re looking for a great experience, look no further than Platypus Brewing. Their menu is a culinary masterpiece, offering an incredible selection of dishes that cater to diverse tastes and preferences. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the staff is friendly and attentive, making every visit a true pleasure. I’ve dined at Platypus Brewing several times and have never been disappointed – it’s truly a must-visit destination for any food lover.

Good food and beer

By Megagrot |

They have a full menu unlike most breweries around Houston. Some interesting choices to match the owners heritage. Good Selection of beers and have bar snacks if your too cheap to pay for food. Tables and some old board games are there to play as well. Plenty of parking attached.

Downhill, All The Way

By Bondesco |

We thought that we would revisit this place - on our last visit it was not very inspiring and as an expat Aussie I really wanted it to be better. Sadly this was not the case, and in fact it was even worse this time around, and that took a bit of doing. We were there around 7pm on a Saturday night. The place was not crowded with tables available both inside and out. We settled on an inside table and waited. Eventually a nice young lady took our order. They were out of Aussie meat pies (the main reason for even going there) so I settled for the bowl of chili. Milady chose the Quesadillas and we each had water - I was not particularly impressed with their beers last visit but I did like the pie and fries. So: time goes by with no sign of our food. Our waters are empty and so is the cooler by the counter where you help yourself to refills. Nobody bothers to refill either. A server takes our money and brings our change but still no food. Eventually over 30 minutes has passed and still nothing. We decide to leave. At that precise point our server finally arrives to tell us that our order is now next in line, miracle of miracles. I tell her that we have had enough and want our money back, to which she agrees and duly returns with our refund and we depart, never to return. I don't know what else to say really - the place is rough and loud, the food is slightly over-priced and the place bears absolutely no resemblance to any Aussie pub that I have been in, and I have been in a few. Add to that the staff attitude, which seems to be to do as little as possible and as slowly as possible, and you have something that I don't care to spend any more time or money in. The owners must rarely visit for it to have gotten this bad - they both have careers elsewhere and this is a kind of hobby for them. We will not go there again - we live nearby and there are plenty of better options with better beer and much better service, mostly for a little less $$. I wish that the owners would remove the allusion to Australian-ness in the name and call it something more fitting, something like "Loud Beer and Maybe Food".

The gift of service and joy

By John L |

Rebecca was amazing . Juju was perfect. The atmosphere was surreal. I have never felt more at home or such loving and caring individuals for a bar in my life . The experience changed the way I look at neighbors bars and raised my expectations for any future visits to any other bar. My experience exceeded all expectations of serves , homeless, and friendliness. I don’t think I will go to another bar.

Platypus Brewing Review

By aghyba |

Drinking the Houston’s Hoppy Hooch 6.8% alc, nice hoppy good beer. Ordered the flat bread with hummus and pita bread, all good. Recommend for their beer and food, great times.

Small detour

By SoniaRen |

We were heading to NRG and stopped her because brewskis at the stadium are always overpriced. Friendly service, excellent beers. I loved the environment and could have stayed all day.

Average

By H-town-archi |

Not that good. The beer was average at best (there are a lot better options in Houston) The food was good but the service was not. Plenty of outdoor and indoor seating.

Good Beer, Good Service

By Waunderlust |

The staff is very attentive, any staff member that walked by asked us how we were doing, and if we needed anything. The beer is great!

Cute place and a nice outdoor area, but I wasn’t a huge fan of the beer. Staff was somewhat friendly but didn’t really check in.

Pretty Good

By Bondesco |

I'm an Aussie and this place looked good online and it was OK but not great when I got there. Staff were friendly enough but they needed prodding to clean the bar off. Beer was good, food likewise - sort of Aussie-like anyways. I had a pie (of course) and it was pretty damn good, it met all the requirements: I could hold it with one hand while I ate it, which is rare in the US. Chips (fries) were excellent, best in a long time. Online they offer mushy peas, which is a rare Aussie treat, but they no longer offer them in the menu which was a huge blow to my expectations. The names of their beers were hysterical, at least to an Aussie. FIGJAM? Wahahaha!!! Maaaaate!!! In an effort to achieve true Aussie authenticity they have got a large selection of real Aussie flies from somewhere and they are everywhere - in the bar crawling on the beer taps and outside crawling on the food. Perhaps this is a step too far towards the feeling of actually being in an Aussie pub? Notwithstanding I would go back for the pies and fries any day.

Love Platypus!

Love this brewery! The beers are all excellent (wasn't one that I didn't like), the location is great (right on Washington), the outdoor space is awesome- it has Tvs and dogs are allowed out there so we always bring ours. The food is also really good, surprisingly for a brewery/bar. Their salad is actually one of my favorites. And if you haven't tried their chocolate dessert, you must! Soo good.

Awesome spot!

This brewery had a fun atmosphere and the beer was good. We arrived at 8:00 for dinner and the kitchen was already closed. At 9:00 they turned on the lights and wanted us out.

Nice brewery , good food

Stopped here on a Saturday afternoon. Tried several beers. No standouts but the Ranga Red was good . Grilled cheese was awesome with American and 2 other cheeses ( warning if you ask for jalapenos they put raw ones on and they are super hot-- took them off ). 3 little pig fries were great. Also ordered the flatbread/ dip platter --- didn't eat it because the flatbread was hard and stale and the hummus was unseasoned and bland. Nothing special about this place.

Fun looking brewery

It is a fun looking brewery with some parking right outside and plenty of parking nearby. The beers are average but the accompanying bar food is lacking.

Leisurely Saturday afternoon

We enjoy visiting breweries to compare them. They have a relaxing and pet friendly outdoor sitting area where you can watch football or merely socialize. The owner gave us a tour of the brewery. Great place to visit.

Decent Place

Platypus Brewing is a well thought out brewery. Where some places make it seem like the tap house/biergarten area was an afterthought, Platypus wants you comfortably spend some time with them. Having indoor and outdoor seating is a pleasant surprise, especially since it rained off and on while we were there. The staff was friendly - we briefly met the head brewer. A nice touch here was that Platypus serves food and servers will come to you if you’re sitting outside. They were very attentive and checked on us often but not too often. The food was decent though the vegetarian spring rolls were kind of a mess. Another customer let us try some of their Brussels Sprouts which were really good. The beer was good. We like the Stars at Night porter and Sour-son. The place was clean (the bathrooms were impressive, oddly enough). Other customers seemed to enjoy their time there as well. We were staying in the downtown area and it was an easy drive to find them. So check them out!

Service is A+

I went with a group on a whim and had a great time. The stout they had on tap was delicious. Highly recommend for the dark beer fans. I was very impressed with the service. I wasn’t feeling too well and needed water. A water main in Houston has broken that weekend and the city was on a boil notice. The staff was more than accommodating with finding water even though their water jugs were depleted. Really high class stuff. Food was delicious too. They were out of their notable dishes, but I had a really good salad and my friend had the fish and chips. I’ll be back next time I’m in Houston!

Good beer and great service

My wife and I met a few other couples here to catch up and plan another get together. They saved a table for us and our beer master (Duncan) was a great host. He took great care of us and helped us choose among the many beers. The beer was good the food was good (and very large portions). We sat inside but there is also outdoor covered seating and they had a guy strumming guitar and singling outside too. I would certainly go back.

Kitchen is the highlight

By Ashton Morrow |

I've been into Platypus a time or two; most recently on election night to watch the "fireworks." I'll start off by saying the venue, owner, and service are all great! My sole complaint, and the reason I gave 4 rather than 5 stars is that the beers were all a bit too similar to one another and I like more variety in a brewery. Last but not least, the kitchen puts out phenomenal food.

Great brews with a really friendly staff. They are dog friendly with a big green space next to additional parking.

Great beer, food and service

By rolltide2 |

I love this place. My favorite beers are Morning Bobby and Bobby Dazzler. Morning Bobby is like Bobby Dazzler with a hint of coffee. Delicious. My favorite foods are the quesadillas, the fries, and the pretzel bites. The pretzel bites are different, but wonderful. The chicken sandwich and the brussel sprouts are also amazing. The service is excellent. Friendly, capable, and all waitstaff are wearing masks and following safety precautions. Give it a try if you’re in the neighborhood. Or even if you have to make a special trip!

Amazing.

Amazing beer, and INCREDIBLE fish fry! We also had the Fancy Fries and loved them. So glad we stopped by on a whim! Will be back! Rough End of the Pinneapple was great

This spot is great for a casual drink, watch a game, great sours, a go to hole in the wall. Would definitely recommend for people to visit once if you’re in the are.

Real Australian food

The brewery was started by some Aussies and we are glad that they did! We visited with family who spent several years in Western Australia and they vouched for the real Aussie touches. Try the lightly fried fish sandwich or the sliders! There are lots of great beers.

Favorite Small Brewery In Houston!

By p13marina |

My husband and I live down the street from this brewery and finally decided to give it a try. Since the weather has been so nice we wanted to take our dog and sit outside. We're so glad we did! They have a wonderful outside semi covered deck area with tables where we were able to sit. Since we never had any of their beers we got two of the samplers which allowed for us to try each one of their beers (8 total). Normally when we do this at other breweries there are at least 2-3 that are just horrible, but each one that we tried was very good! We also ordered some food and for a brewery/bar it was exceptional! I normally hate bar food but I got the large salad and my husband ordered the steak and mushroom pie with fries and the fried cheese and it was all very good! We spent the afternoon drinking and eating and when we were about to leave we wanted some dessert and noticed that had two options. We went with the death of chocolate and I have to say that was one of the best desserts we've ever had! Met the owner on the way out who was super nice and who is actually from Australia. Great stuff guys!

Delicious Brewery!

Great beer, better food. Good options for both, recommend the Piney IPA and Bahn Mi. Ask for Rebecca! She’s the best will take excellent care of you!
