We stopped here after landing in San Diego for a quick brunch. The service was fast and friendly. We all got different meals and we all enjoyed them. Their house potatoes and chocolate crepes were especially good!

OK for breakfast. Dark and dingy inside. Breakfast took FOREVER. Servers are very nice. Food is just OK. Too many other places to get good food in around Shelter Island.

Unfortunately we didn't discover Point Break until our last day in San Diego. The pancakes were amazing. I wish I could've tried every kind.

Loved this quaint place. Sat in patio area, food was great and waitress was so nice and gave awesome suggetions. Also liked the eclectic look of the place.

We were trying to find a breakfast place near our hotel. After reading some really good reviews and some negative ones, we decided to try it anyways. We had 2 young boys with us that we're happy splitting some pancakes, sausage and eggs. On the other hand, my husband's meal arrived sub-par. His potatoes were cold and the Denver omelette was okay. I got the California Benedict. The Hollandaise sauce tasted like it was out of jar and I was not a fan of the turkey. The decor was kitschy. The servers were attentive. They also use Square to swipe cards, which is nice if you want your receipt emailed to you. We probably wouldn't eat here again.

Found this wonderful gem walking around the area that we were staying at and it was 1/2 mile from our hotel. This is def a place frequented by locals. Food is cheap and delicious. They have a great strawberry stuffed French toast. Omelets well cooked and yummy. Coffee excellent. Service terrific!

Cute place worth the stop over for happy hour if your in the area! Bartenders are nice and service is fast. I had the nachos which were huge!

We were staying at Best Western Island Palms and wanted breakfast before our day started and had read about this cafe online with Trip Advisor. It is a bar... but in mornings it's a locals breakfast spot with friendly waitress and GOOD food. It is dark inside- no big deal- the food speaks for itself and I'd go back another morning!

We ate there for breakfast, Place needs a little cleaned up but the food was good. Parking could be a little better

This is a good place for breakfast and lunch. On a late morning ( they serve breakfast till 3:00) I had the cinnamon/ apple pancakes - which are unbelievably delicious and my wife had the Cuban sandwich which was one of the best she's had. The place is a little timeworn and the service can be slow but all the staff are very friendly and they keep your coffee cup full while you wait. Good food, great prices and convenience.

Clean, friendly, and very good food. Fruit cup came with my pancakes, sausages, and eggs. Kona coffee!

We have visited this restaurant several times over the years and have never been disappointed! Great food, friendly staff and reasonable prices! Will definitely come back next time we are in San Diego.

Over 2 weekends I enjoyed a breakfast with my husband and 3 - three! - dinners with friends. The staff was very friendly and helpful, accommodating our group of 10-12 people. I loved the spinach salad with salmon… enough to order it a second time. The portions were generous and the food delicious. These are the reasons why we kept going back!

Fun irreverent atmosphere. Excellent service. Delicious food prepared just the way you like it. Point Break is one of our favorite San Diego breakfast hangouts. Try it, You'll love it. But, don't look for fancy surroundings or sophisticated fare. Go for just plain bar-like ambiance and delicious food.

I would give this place no stars if I could. It's gloomy and leaking, and the food was beyond bad. We had breakfast there, and everything tasted like the griddle had not been cleaned in quite some time. It was really bad. Save your money and go somewhere else.

Found this little gem on our last night in Shelter Island, such a shame we did not find it sooner! 2$ Budweiser's went down a treat. We sat outside in the small courtyard that encourages you to speak to your fellow drinkers and diners, we met some friendly and funny locals that insisted we visit Ocean Beach after Happy Hour to see the sun sets, we took their advice, called an Uber Cab 6$ and what a find we had .....OB was amazing, next time we are in SD we will be back at this little gem chatting to the locals and having more great tips about SD and of course sipping 2$ Buds 😂

We always hit up "Point Break" after a night of drinking and watching "Jewel" spin a great show at "Humphreys" Food was very good I had the Chorizo scramble and the wife had "Eggs Benedict" Service was not great, we were served our meals and both of our cups were empty-I asked for a Diet Coke refill and our waitress left without asking my wife if her empty coffee needed a refill! No Big deal, the food was good always is here-We will be back.

Biggest burger I have ever had. Great fries and onion rings. But be aware. I found bits of plastic in my sandwich. Hope it was a one time thing, as I really enjoy theold school, . local charm. Due to COVID our order was to go. Enjoyed a nice cold draft whle waiting. They do have table set up in parking lot. Looking forward to in door dining again.

where else can you get a fresh fish dinner for 12.95. the food here is wonderful. nothing fancy but can't beat the quality for the price.

We spotted this restaurant while looking for breakfast and checked them out. The parking lot was full, so we thought "must be good". It was GREAT! The prices were good, and the staff was super! The food was terrific--I usually take a bite or two from my pancakes. At this restaurant, I wolfed them down--they were amazing! We will definitely come back!

We come here all the time. My Dad used to come when he was in the Navy...he is 90 now! The people are friendly and the food is always great. The only problem we had when we went yesterday is they have some VERY overpowering air-fresheners in the bathrooms! Please please take these out. There are heaps of people that cannot tolerate them.

Stumbled on to this little restaurant for breakfast and it was great. Service was fast and friendly and food was really good and very reasonably priced.

We have been going for a while, my son is autistic and it's not just the staff who are accepting. He will wander around dance to their awesome music visit customers who accept him, he loves seeing the pups who visit and filling the water bowls. The waitresses know my son's order before we order. They are SO autism inclusive, the staff and customers. This place is one of the most amazing places to visit in San diego they always make you feel like family.

We stay on Shelter Island every December during a veterinary conference and always have at least one breakfast at Point Break. You're treated like a local with attentive and engaging service. The breakfast menu is extensive and we are never disappointed. It's not fancy but filled with character.

This place had excellent breakfast! Not a fancy place- looks like you are inside an old ship. But the food and wait staff were great! They had great fresh food avocado and fruit on the breakfast menu. Lots of locals.

Don’t let the outside put you off. Lots of locals use this place which is always a good sign. Tasty, big portions, good prices.

Used to be a regular here. Service has gone downhill, cockroaches, rude service, dirty. Oh, and if you leave bad reviews the waitresses attack you personally on social media. How classy. They keep their bar regulars with questionable after hour business im sure.

Forget the hotels. Never mind the fancy restaurants. This little neighborhood bar serves up the best breakfast on Shelter Island. The food is great, the price is right and April & Kevin are about the nicest people, anywhere. Do yourself a big favor and stop in for the best breakfast on the Island!

This is probably the best breakfast in San Diego. The portions are massive and the food is delicious. The service was phenomenal and the waitress was nice and chatty with a very good knowledge of the local area and the state of California.

Good place to grab breakfast in Shelter Island. The service was good and so was the food. A pretty standard style breakfast.

Meaty scrambler is a great value and wait staff is very fun and personable! So good we stopped two days in a row. Do not judge this by outside appearance!

We happened into this place on our last morning in San Diego, and we are so glad we did! EXCELLENT breakfast choices, huge portions of really good food, and a funky atmosphere all made for a really great experience. I had the Crab Benedict, and my husband had an omelette. The portions were so large we didn't feel the need to eat again until we arrived back in Texas late that afternoon. Would definitely recommend to any group/family/couple.

Self proclaimed "choice of the locals" and yes they are absolutely right. Stop there when you are around and you will get very tasty food for fair prices and a absolutely great and friendly staff in an authentic location....

I just wandered in from a walk while my daughter was in class ... the omelette with sausage, pesto and artichoke hearts was AMAZING with homemade salsa ... and the hash browns were crispy. The place looks like a surfer’s diner but the server was super friendly and the coffee was hot. Unexpected find!

This is a great place for breakfast! I had the strawberry stuffed french toast, mmmmm. It doesn't look much from the outside but the food is very good, the staff and the service outstanding and the prices are great for what you get, the portions are BIG. We will go back here tomorrow, soooo much better than the breakfast in our hotel. Can highly recommend this place!

Very welcoming wait staff. Food is good and plentiful. Prices are also very good. Decor is dark and not the greatest.

We had a group of 7 who were passing time before our charter. Initially this place looked perfect because of the location. however when we walked in, the atmosphere was dark and gloomy. The bar was not just dark and gloomy, but the staff immediately ignored us. Typically when you walk into a restaurant/bar, you expect a waitress to come take your order. Instead, we had to walk up to the bar to place an order. And then wait until they came by to ask them how they handle orders. Eventually, the one bartender stop by to take our order. Immediately, I had bad vibes. Sure enough after ordering a round of drinks we decided to utilize one of the many games they had available in the bar area. We were on vacation having a great time and laughing. After about 20 minutes, one of the elder blonde women came by our table to ask us to keep it the down in the bar. Yes in the bar. She was extremely rude. We were shocked and extremely disappointed! Of course we were the only non YT people in bar. This area of town caters to the wealthy so we should not have been surprised. I would advise against anyone who does not fall on the upper social status from giving this any business .

Average food with many options. We were here for breakfast and the French toast plate was average. Breakfast sandwich on sourdough was a bit better. Wasn't too busy at 10 on a Sunday unless your group is larger than 4. Very dark inside and service is lacking.

My husband and I stopped here for an early dinner after a busy day at Comic Con. The building is an older combination bar and restaurant. The waitstaff was welcoming and took time to explain the menu. The portions were generous and quite tasty. We want to come back for Breakfast some day.

This would have been 5 stars because the food is awesome, but.... 3 days into a week long holiday and we've had 2 breakfasts and one dinner. Awesome breakfast's, won't even look anywhere else now and will be back on our remaining days. Waitress service brilliant at breakfast time. Had one dinner, food was very, very good but waitress service was dire. After delivering food (1 item missing from what we'd ordered but that really wasn't a problem). The problem was the total lack of service from the server. Once the food was delivered it was really difficult to get any attention to get anything further from the menu or any further drinks.

We did "happy" hour here but truly it was a full meal including crabs cakes which were quite good if not outstanding and ahi tuna on a bed of greens that was beyond generous. The tuna was twice easily what I've been served at more expensive places and absolutely wonderful. We had onion rings as well and several beers and the price was unbelievably modest. Add a friendly server who was also bartender at this not too busy time and you have a very pleasing experience all round. This is a bar/restaurant so take note if you are looking for something dressier but we'd love to have the chance to return.

My family visited here for breakfast and had a lovely meal. On first sight the place doesn't look much however don't let that put you off; as the food is fabulous. My son tried the buttermilk pancakes and was hooked and they were really accommodating with my daughters various food allergies. My scrambled eggs were cooked to perfection as was my husbands choice of eggs. It was recommended to us by staff at the hotel and they weren't wrong. It's a gem of a place.

Had breakfast here and was really really good, I had an omlette, huge! Also went there for happy hour one afternoon! Would go back, doesn't look like much from the outside but worth the stop. They also have otside seating if you are a smoker!

This place is like cheers, where everybody knows your name. It could be months since you've been in and the friendly servers will always remember you. Rebecca is my favorite. She's the seasoned professional that keeps the place running like a well oiled machine. If you come in for breakfast I'd recommend the crab Benedict and a pitcher of mimosas. Happy hour's best kept secret is the seared ahi appetizer. So amazing! I keep coming back because of the great fun local vibe, wonderful local craft beer selection, and friendly service.

Truly great food in a "dive" like setting. Very friendly service, oustanding eggs benedict w perfect hollandaise, egg spinach scramble, apple pancakes and more. Fast service. What more could you ask?

Our family had lunch here today and the service was only surpassed by the great food we all had different dishes and all were satisfied. There were 9 of us and we had huge portions.

We stopped in here one morning. We were staying in the Marina. Interesting in appearance. We sat outside. Very small patio. Food was very good. Great coffee. Friendly and efficient service. It's not fancy but it was good and if back in the area we would return.

My husband and I went on a mini vacation for my birthday and found this spot for breakfast. My husband had the Chicken Fried Steak which was to excellent. I had French Toast the first day and had to try the Chicken Fried steak on the second day. Delicious and great service. The waitress Ellen was fast, friendly and attentive. I wish we lived closer!!

Great find for a killer three egg breakfast. Fab place for a family quick stop. The coffee is served in a large mug and the grilled potatoes had melted cheese. April and Crystal are attentive and efficient servers, who make sure you're comfortable and well fed.

We chose Point Break because of how close it was to our hotel but the bonus was the great food! We had breakfast (twice) and dinner here and both were excellent. The waitresses were prompt and courteous, our food was fresh and nicely presented. Good choice for a meal (or two)!

Went for breakfast on their patio on a beautiful day. More friends joined us and we ended up staying for lunch! Huge portions at reasonable prices with a very personable owner/waitress. Inside is a bit dark but loved the patio! Eat here during every stay on Shelter Island!

We meet every Monday with friends for the 2-for-1 burger night… Needless to say the burgers are amazing and cooked just the way you like them. Please don’t forget the sweet potato fries Yum Yum Mary the waitress is a gem and adorable to boot! If you want a place where the locals go this is it! Jon Robert, Peggy Ken, Kim Rose Debbie🤩

Interesting little restaurant on Shelter Island. A bit quirky inside but a homey ambiance. We were in just at the time for breakfast or lunch and all four of us had lunch. Good menu choices and a variety of burgers. I had the fish & chips which were done well - and tasted good - not excellent but pretty good. Our waitress was pleasant but a bit slow getting around to us and checking up on us. But we were not in a hurry so that was OK.

This is where the locals go. Great food and service. Staff was friendly and polite. Tv therr to watch game.dog friendly. They even have a dog menu.

We stopped here for the first time during our vacation in San Diego in April. We ate out on the patio. The service was very good considering how busy they were, with a very friendly staff. Great food and great prices. We will be back again.

It looks like a dive bar from the outside. Inside you will find the bar and a casual atmosphere for breakfast. Mimosas are highly recommended.

This little place is frequented by mainly the men who work on boats, we think. We've had breakfast there twice in the past year, and the food is really good, plentiful and reasonably priced, and the service is fast and friendly. The atmosphere is nothing to get excited about, but it's worth trying. We'll be back again.

roaches, cold food, terrible service, bigoted menu. need i say more? i've been there many times, tried to be understanding, patient, and friendly. the owner is creepy towards women and the waitresses act like the preps from Mean Girls.

I had two eggs with hash browns and bacon and my sunny side eggs were runny. My husband's eggs were cold. There wasn't a lot of people in here when we were here. We didnt

Great food, Rebecca is very entertaining. It's the local's spot in Point Loma for good reason. Best breakfast and awesome happy hour.

Point Break has the best breakfast in Point Loma and Becca Boo is the best ! Happy Hour everday! Great appetizers!

First of all, the menu is huge. So that takes a while to digest. Unlike most eateries you are in and out in minutes in America, the kitchen is always going and the food is on your table in 10 minutes or less and piping hot. We deliberated the menu and ordered and it felt like the food took ages to come, it was a cold day and the draft from the outside made the wait feel longer. The food came and unlike most places the portions weren’t giant. My partner had a breakfast sandwich and I had cinnamon toast (1 slice), sausage and egg. It was the only time we ate a full meal when we were in America. The place is relaxed and I thought the service was a little slow, but I don’t think the staff lacked urgency, it was just a relaxed atmosphere. If you’re in the area, it’s definitely worth a visit if you have the time.

Very friendly staff and delicious coffee drinks. Iced drinks come with “coffee cubes” which is a great touch! We will be back.

It was not very busy for dinner when we were there. It doesn't give you a feeling that the restaurant is very clean. It was very dark, more so than most restaurants. Our waitress was very friendly and good service. They will make sure you get what you want, like they gave me a plate with rice when I asked for some bread (they don't have it). The food tends to be greasier, so somewhat hard on your system if you are traveling. There seemed to be a lot of regular local people here. They were having a good time and loud which may be a problem if you want a quiet dinner.

My wife and I stopped by here to enjoy a nice breakfast because the reviews we had read were very good. This was a bad choice as the food we were served was awful. It was brought to us cold and after asking for no green peppers it was loaded with peppers. The eggs were overcooked (soft poached eggs were hard boiled eggs), and the toast was not toasted when we asked for dark toast. The waitress apologized and cleared our table of the full plates of food she had brought us. We then received our bill for the full amount with another I'm sorry. That was the worst breakfast we have been served in years. If you feel lucky stop by here but if you want good food go somewhere else.

Great vibe for everyone: families too. Comfortable and fun atmosphere. Very friend staff. The food is great, try the ahi! I go there as often as I can.

Family went for lunch. Menu had numerous sandwiches and burgers. The sandwiches were good as well as the chicken tenders. Reasonably priced meals with great dinner specials. Waitress was interactive and attentive. Vegetable garden is on site, and used in meals. We will visit the next time we come to San Diego.

This little place was a great local cafe that served delicious food and had a real seaside atmosphere. We sat outside and enjoyed a delicious breakfast at a decent price. My only suggestion would be to do half orders for the French toast! My omelette was so big I had no room for a full order but I would have stuffed myself with a half order for sure! :)

Walked to this cafe and was pleasantly surprised. Service is outstanding and friendly. Vast breakfast selection and very good!

Wide choice of food, some with a twist. Decor is old but has some charm. My husband said it was one of the best burgers he's had (high praise). My sandwich was good, and they had hefty servings. If you are staying on Shelter Island you can easily walk here. Prices good.

We recently found a half off coupon for Point Break Cafe on Shelter Island in San Diego, and decided to try it for breakfast. The large sign helped us locate an otherwise nondescript building. The place had a small bar and a forgettable decor. Many of the patrons appeared to be somewhat colorful regulars from this quasi beach/ harbor area. We sat at a kind of wobbly varnished wood table - one plate was chipped and my coffee mug had a deep cracks inside, but both items were cheerfully replaced by our friendly server. The breakfast menu was expansive with typical American items, but, as expected in Southern California, Mexican specialties were also available. My wife and I both had omlettes, her's was a bacon, egg and cheese with a generous serving of tasty bacon. I created a corned beef hash, cheese and green pepper omlette. The hash was clearly homemade, and was one of the most tasty versions in my recent memory. The accompanying hash browns and fruit cup were also flavorful. We splurged and shared a short stack of mouthwatering blueberry pancakes. I complimented the 2 chefs on our way out. On balance this was a positive food experience, (I understand they do a mean ribeye steak ) but it is definitely not to place to impress guests. I think another visit may be in order - perhaps for dinner.

We stopped in here twice for breakfast while staying in the area. The food was excellent and the service was great.

When in search of a good meal on Shelter Island don't pass this restaurant by based on the outside view. It's rustic on the inside too but the menu is beyond extensive, the portions are generous and the food is tasty. The service is friendly and efficient and the price is normal. All in all, a place to come back to.

Had 2 breakfasts and 1 dinner here food of good quality and well priced, happy staff and chilled out atmosphere, quirky decor.

I mean there was some good but this is your all the way around a dive. It was cute and had some charm and definitely a lot of character. I would dig the whole scene if the food didn't match the interior so well. The people were friendly and I loved the location. I walked from my hotel so that was convenient and fun. I approached and was reluctant but didn't see anything else around so I went in. We order- the food was scary looking. I like to watch my health but I'm open to mom and pops that serve some quality food, this is not that. It's heavy and doesn't look fresh. The coffee was cheap, there wasn't an ounce of quality to the food. It's as cheap as it gets, IHOP is better. So be warned. But the location and service wasn't too bad, it just wasn't ideal either. It was only okay. Next time, I would just go someplace else. Which I hate to say because I love supporting local but some quality food is a must. At least some extent. Thanks.

a dimly lit dive loved by locals and recommended for visitors! It has been there a while, has eccentric decor that I really like, nice service, and delicious banana nut pancakes. I would love to try lunch and dinner there too.

they have great price on beer and 1/2 price appetizers for happy hour. they have great dinner specials and on monday a 2 for 1 hamburger.

Popped in for a quick breakfast and thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience. A quirky looking bar/restaurant that serves huge portions of fabulous food. Great happy hour too. Highly recommend

Good but nothing special. Pancakes and bacon were good. Biscuits were a little dry. Kind of expensive for breakfast.

Food and atmosphere were great and server was really nice. French Dip and roast beef, bacon, cheddar sandwiches were both very good and fries were tasty. Would definitely recommend as a stop to eat.

We went to have breakfast on a Tuesday morning, there were 4 tables occupied by diners who already had food. The restaurant is very dark and dreary and we had to walk around to find a table with enough light where we could see what we were going to be eating. We were given a breakfast menu and we ordered coffee and water. Two men came in and were immediately given coffee and had their order taken. We were still waiting for our coffee. We left, so I can’t rate the food, but service was reserved for locals who visit regularly.

We had breakfast there.....great selection and attentive service. Food was ok. My omlette was massive and tasty but came using egg instead of egg whites. My partner had scrambled egg whites with a side of fruit.....she enjoyed it. Coffee was weak and oj was cheap. Ok for brekky.

We stopped at this local secret because it was within walking distance of our hotel on Shelter Island and we had heard they did a good breakfast. We were in for a treat. The food, atmosphere, and service were all fantastic. The restaurant is small and designed to look like an overturned pirate ship with the roof, shaped like the ships bottom. The decor includes a jolly skeleton, a hungry shark and a lending library in case you want to stay awhile and read. There is a small, pet friendly outside eating area. We felt instantly comfortable. My husband had the Fun Breakfast, and when he got sausage instead of bacon, they quickly fried up almost a whole rasher of perfectly cooked bacon for him, and did it with a smile. I had the Point Break club, and it was big enough for three meals (literally, we took it back to the hotel and had enough for breakfast for the both of us the next morning - with the addition of several pieces of bacon.) The service was great and all the workers made us feel as if we were locals. As a matter of fact, we enjoyed it so much that we went back for dinner. At dinner, one of the people who was there at lunch time recognized us and we ended up joining a party of people and having another great time. We will definitely be going back on our next trip.

Love this place because it doesn’t try to be something it’s not. Fun place to meet some locals and enjoy a game. Food is great but atmosphere is better.

Had breakfast here twice and a dinner - consistently good food. Apple and cinnamon pancakes were delicious. Service was great too - highly recommended

Visited three times in our long weekend on Shelter Island. We had breakfast twice. The steak and eggs was lovely, tender steak and hash brown potatoes. The meaty scramble was also good. So were the blueberry pancakes. We went in on Monday evening when it was 2 for 1 burgers. Again these were lovely. Three of us had burgers and my hubby had meatloaf. I had 2 cocktails, my hubby had 2 beers and the boys had soft drinks with 2 refills. The bill came to $69 !! Very helpful serving staff, would recommend to anyone visiting Shelter Island

Fun and funky little place, lovely staff (thank you to the lovely lady who made us Brits very welcome!) Great selection of food, great coffee and smiley chefs which is good to see! Highly recommended

Happy hour from 3:30 to 6:30 pm is really good for beer drinkers, and Monday night you can get Any 2 half pound burgers with fries and 2 beers for about 15.00 plus tax & tip...So for $20.00 O.T.D. ( Out the Door ) it's a great deal ...also recommended is All you can eat Fish and Chips on Fridays !!!

Don't expect fancy decor or table clothes. But you can expect good food, friendly service, great beers and fair prices. Kind of dingy but surprising good.

Simple place close to the marina. They serve great food at good price!!! I recommend highly. To be noted: The cooks are super fast

We had breakfast here after staying on Shelter Island, and it was good. My husband chose better than I did and got the homemade corned beef and hash with a side of black beans - the beans were great and the hash and eggs were done perfectly. I got poached eggs and potatoes - the eggs were a bit overdone (like they'd been sitting under a heat lamp for a bit), but the potatoes were fine. The patio was dog friendly and the servers and the busboy were really nice and attentive. It's worth stopping in!

Looks like a cross between a dive bar and Cheers... bar, couches, TVs, and dining tables. We enjoyed a good breakfast with great, friendly service. A little pricier than we expected - $55 for four people for breakfast. Sorry we didn't make it back there for happy hour!

Looking from the outside it is very modest perhaps that is the way the locals like it. Once inside it was warm friendly and very relaxed. The food was great and waitstaff treated everyone more like family then customers. Servings are huge and it is incredible how they do it for the price. We are going back tonight for dinner.

My wife and I ate dinner here recently. We took advantage of the special of the day and received a lot of decently prepare food and didn't spend that much. It's not a fancy place and seems to attract many locals. If you aren't in the mood for "fine dining" you might want to give this place a try.

Not so much a cafe......more like a dark bar. If you don't mind that .....take your family and friends. We had an amazing breakfast for $8. Great service and food and bloody Mary's. We will be back for sure.

This is a very casual restaurant where one can always get a great breakfast or lunch. I have not been there for dinner, and cannot offer a valid opinion. In all my years of have breakfast there, the service has always been great.

This is a cool little place. Good breakfast menu selection. Good prices. The service was great and friendly.

Local restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We only ate breakfast there. Great food, but the portions are huge!

Had time to kill after dropping off someone at the airport, so I Yelped a breakfast spot and found the Point Break Cafe. Service was great and the breakfast was terrific. This is a great "local" place which I hope to enjoy at Happy Hour in the future!

We were visiting the area for a get away from our Las Vegas heat. We stumbled into the Point Break which appeared to be a local's favorite. We originally went for lunch but returned for a breakfast and a dinner. Evey person that assisted us was pleasant, cheerful and very efficient. Thanks especially to our breakfast server who gifted us with chocolates when leaving. Certainly not the fanciest place we ate, but definitely good food and excellent service.

Curb appeal is not going to get you inside. Almost passed up because couldn,t find door. BUT a great place for breakfast. The food was delicious and service good. Just a local cafe with reasonable prices

Had lunch here today. Service greeted us almost immediately when we entered - offered us a choice to sit outside, so we did. Didn't get a good look inside, but it is a very casual place - jeans, t-shirt. The outside seating was clean. Tables in good shape, chairs are a bit weathered - probably from the sun. The view is of the building, or the street with cars parked along - nothing special. There are umbrellas - but it was a nice relaxing setting. I had the grilled cheese - it had feta and another cheese that I forgot, tomatoes, basil on sourdough. It was grilled perfectly - the cheese was melted and it had just the right amount of crunch. Flavors were very good. Mrs. was not hungry but got a bowl of fresh fruit and got the thumbs up. Our server was very pleasant and efficient and confident. Perhaps a bit too friendly, but we engaged her in conversation - so not holding that against her. Definitely will go again.

It might look a little like a dive, but they've got good food and friendly wait staff. I had a delicious reuben sandwich and my wife had a turkey. Only thing wrong was they forgot the avocado. Menu has good variety of food. Good place to stop for lunch.

Very good breakfast that tastes home-made. It is dark and cozy inside, and the service is great. Decor is as described in the title of my review, but in a good way.

Excellent service. Lots of choices. Stopped for breakfast. Food was tasty. Great prices. Definitely recommend this place.

We ate breakfast here on recommendation of the front desk at Humphreys. I have never seen so many versions of egg benedict on a menu. Portions were large and service friendly. It's just a bit of a shame the english breakfast tea is never quite the same as at home.

We had breakfast here recently and it was excellent. Inexpensive but large amount of food. Atmosphere was great.

Had a good bene here for breakfast. Service good but as others have said, a bit quirky. Don't expect Denny's.

Seriously rats! Do I need to say more. I've seen more than one rat at a time. Plus their are flies just swarming around the beer taps. So gross!

My wife and I arrived in San Diego on New Year's Day, after a long drive from Phoenix. We were hungry and tired and chose to eat at Point Break largely because it was convenient to our Shelter Island hotel and also because it was open on New Year's Day! At first, we were a little uncertain if we made the right choice. The interior of the place was a bit run-down and the only customers were a few locals sitting at the bar, drinking and watching a football game on TV. Also, my wife has a lot of food allergies so we wondered if she could be accommodated. Well, despite the cafe-like environment, we both got an excellent meal, tasty and cooked to perfection and the waitress, a college girl probably, was very friendly and attentive. The price was not too bad either for portions that were very generous. We will probably eat here again.

We ate an early dinner here after flying into San Diego. We got to take advantage of happy hour specials. Our waitress was friendly and helpful. There were games for our kids to play while they waited on the meals. Portions were big and the food was tasty. We will definitely try to go back for breakfast this week!

This is ok, local place, good food nothing exceptional and nothing no exceptional. Good service. A blue jeams and boaters place.

Rebecca was great!! She was really nice and the French dip sandwich was wonderful!! They have an outside patio with a nice breeze on it and umbrellas so you can stay out of the sun if you need to. Pandora playing in the main room that afternoon it was nice and relaxing. They make you feel at home.

We like this little local place. Been there several times for breakfast which is always good. Not fancy so don't expect it.

This place is a hidden treasure, quirky and relaxed atmosphere with good food and great happy hour offers. Would recommend!

A nice place to go for a breakfast where the locals seem to go. Waitstaff was very friendly and took good care of us. Food was good and prices reasonable.

On Thursday 28 March 2019, my husband I were on an overnight trip to San Diego for a medical appointment and decided to try this cafe. We looked at the reviews and decided to give it a try. I ordered the nacho appetizer and my husband ordered the blackened Mahi Mahi with veggies. After ordering my nachos, I asked our waitress to bring the nachos with my husband’s Mahi so we could eat together. In other words, I wanted the nachos to be my meal. Also, I asked her how big a normal order of nachos was. She made a gesture with her hands. I said, that is too much food and we don’t want to waste. We mentioned we would pay the price of a full order. We just did not want to waste food. So, I asked for a half-order. I believe she forgot to tell the cook two things; first, the portion, because when the nachos arrived, the order was huge. Second, when the nachos arrived, they were very cold, and the hamburger meat was overcooked (crunchy burnt). I knew the nachos were cold because the cheese held the nachos stiffly, like cement, to the plate. I attempted to eat them but couldn’t. I ate approximately 3 nachos. My husband attempted to eat the fish. He said, the outer edges of the fish were pretty good, however, when he got to the middle of the fish it was a big ball of rawness. My husband called the waitress over and showed her the raw fish. She agreed it was raw. I then told her how bad my nachos were. I am sure she did not tell the cook to make them for the meal. I believe the cook left them in the window until my husband’s supposedly cooked Mahi Mahi was ready to bring to the table. In the end the waitress agreed not to charge us for my husband’s meal, however, even after swiftly taking the nachos from me; knowing they were gross, she still charged us for the nachos. In hindsight we should have refused to pay for everything. I guess we expected a little better from a Shelter Island establishment.

Beautiful decorations, great location, easy parking, Fabulous food, great service, you can experience home made taste amazing food, in San Diego, totally recommended

The food is the best! Great quality and portion sizes. I would go here everyday for five years probably more years if I could. And did I mention Rebecca? Amaze-balls!!! Always great to see Rebecca and get some good service. Eat your heart out every restaurant without a Rebecca!

I read no reviews about this place before stopping in. I just read the sign that said breakfast and turned in. I had no idea what to expect. It is a tavern, plain and simple. We were the only ones there. I liked the waitress immediately. She even pulled up a chair and asked where we were from and talked with us a bit. The menu had many options and everything looked great. We both ended up having the pancake breakfast with banana nut pancakes, bacon and eggs. It did not disappoint. If I was sitting outside under a palm tree I would have thought we were in our favorite place in Maui. We will be here for three days and have already decided this will be our breakfast spot. Great service and food.

This place is like your fav old dive bar. The staff were super friendly and the breakfast menu has tons of variety and everything was excellent - from specialty pancakes to black beans!

My first time here. Ordered Rib Eye Steak and Eggs. Thin very tender Rib Eye cooked perfectly. Very tender. Spuds were very good w/ cheese sprinkles on top. Eggs cooked perfectly. Bloody Mary was also excellent. Nice varied menu and the prices are right. Try it. Football on TVs as well. Casual, no view, free parking.

The kids were rowdy and the place accommodated with no embarrassment. They loudly knocked down a giant Jenga tower and no one batted an eye. The staff rolled with it and gave great service to our large party. The food was delicious. Point Break is in walking distance to many cool San Diego hotels and resorts, with a laid back atmosphere and breakfast, lunch and dinner service for an affordable price, it is an excellent venue for the whole family, a casual date, or a football game on the tele with some mates.

We chose this restaurant after looking over their menu on their website, and thought it was very reasonable for breakfast. When we were seated and looked at the menu, we noticed the prices were a lot more than they are on the website. Our waitress asked the manager if they would honor those prices and she said no. Another customer who came in shortly after asked the same question. While the food was good, I think this is false advertising. They need to update their website, and maybe their 1950's décor!

My wife and I visited here to get a change in breakfast from hotel. I was ok with a local place with some charm or even sort of. Dive. This place was really bad! Service was slow, food was cold, waitress did not refill coffee, nor check in us. Additionally, place is run down.

Salty kind of place, I've eaten here several times. Search for a coupon online, maybe groupon. Grab a bite to eat, and go deep sea fishing. It's about a block or two south of the Deep sea docks

Rebecca always greets me with a smile. A great place to have a good time between AM and PM. Bring the good attitude.

We have eaten here numerous times. Very decent price for waterfront area. Good quantity and quality. Friendly owner. Locals bar scene atmosphere.

Lucked into Point Break Cafe on Shelter Island San Diego a couple of weeks ago. Was wandering around the neighborhood at 7AM searching for coffee, wifi internet and a comfy spot that might offer decent food. I was in my Pontiac Vibrator and upon entering the cramped parking lot, could not discern an entrance. There was a door on what looked like a storage shed or the dishwasher's back door exit. Yep, a plain brown door, no sign, is your red carpet welcome to Point Break. Point Break Cafe oozes 1965 with some vinyl seating, couches, an old juke box and plenty of surfing and fishing props decorating the walls. Tanya, my server, met me this very quiet Saturday morning and served solid coffee and a menu. She also left me alone to do my usual internet morning ritual. By 8am, some regulars and a few tourists starting coming in for breakfast or their bar wakeup elixir. This is the kind of spot that offers both quiet solitude and a chance to interact with locals on their tales of fishing expertise, romantic drama or the events of the day in San Diego. There are also several televisions, which I normally don't like for my morning mind fog. But, all were on low volume with San Diego's news. Saw plenty of families with small kids enjoying their breakfasts. My breakfast choice was the Popeye scramble with bacon, spinach, mushrooms, onion and feta cheese. Black beans are a favorite, so now I am a happy breakfast breaker here. Outdoor dining is also available. I enjoyed the staff, the setting and the food so much, that I returned Sunday morning for more. Love funky dining vs. sterilized, ikea furnished clone coffee shops in strip malls. The constant whirring coffee grinders and shrieking lattecarmelamokey la de da machines grates like cat nails on a black board in those typical chain cafes. It took me 40 years to learn I needed a "barista" to provide me a perfect cup of Joe. Imagine all of those wasted years of settling for a server, waitperson or the dishwasher to pour me a decent coffee. Gadzooks! And thanks to Tanya and staff for treating me well. See you soon Point Break. Point Break Cafe rates 5 out of 5 spinach eating Popeyes.

We ate here 3 times in the last week. Great coffee and great service. The food was good apart from the last day. I had cold eggs, and cold cornbeef hash. They apologised and had it done again and was at least edible but not great. We did overhear one of the waitresses talking to the cook saying it seems your having trouble with your orders. Which didn't Instill confidence when he just laughed at her.

While staying on Shelter Island, happened upon this spot while looking for breakfast the first morning, not wanting to eat in the hotel restaurant. The food was so good that we went back twice more before we left San Diego. The portions are huge (from the omelets to the yogurt and granola parfait)! The service was excellent, very attentive and friendly servers. I wish we had gotten there for lunch or happy hour, but am glad we found this local spot for breakfast. Would highly recommend it!

Quiet, atmosphere, good friendly service. Good food. . Tender steak, very good mashed potatoes, my husband had chicken.

The restaurant is average looking but the service is friendly and the food was delicious. The cafe is a short bike ride from the hotels on Shelter Island and worth the ride.

the food here is always fresh and homemaded,, the staff are awesome and my fav are Billy Jean and Rebecca

We had the corned beef hash 3 egg breakfast. The corned beef was very good. This is a good place for breakfast in the Point Loma area.

You MUST try the pineapple coconut pancakes - they are life changing! The décor is nautical and a bit old school but still really cool. The staff is very laid back. The food is great!

On our last day in San Diego we went here for breakfast. It was all very good! As a family of 5, we all ordered different things. All plates were clean!

Don't let the outside appearance fool you...the food and service were awesome....will definitely be back.

Sometimes it's just nice to catch a place that isn't perfect in decor or furnishings or view. And Point Break fills the bill. First off, it's obvious the place has been here for quite a while. Tables and chairs are well used as was the sofa seating area near the big screen tv. You know it's ok to hang out when there is a shelf full of " board games". The staff seems to know the regulars and that's good, because repeat business means folks like the place. For lunch we opted for fish n chips, this is a boaters area. The breeding was light the fish tasty and fries were excellent. Plus the beer was cold. Not pretty from the outside but friendly inside.

Very good breakfast. Convenient to our hotel in the area. Service was excellent. "Off the beaten path". Our breakfast choice when in the area.

First time to Shelter Island and stopped at one of the first restaurants we saw while driving towards our hotel. Small tight parking lot out front. Walked in, it looks like an old bar, dark inside. Stacks of sticky menus by the front door. No one to greet us, no sign to tell us whether we should seat ourselves or wait to be seated. Saw what looked like a server walk by at least two times bringing food to others, mind you there are only customers at three tables and lots of empty tables. Again, never acknowledged us so we left. Went across the street for better ambience, an amazing view, great service, and good food and drinks. Will never step foot in this place again and don't recommend.

Stopped here for a late breakfast and we were very pleasantly surprised. They have an extensive breakfast menu with so many options. Three of us got omelettes and they have so many choices. One of us got a Hawaiian omelette with ham pineapple and cheddar, we also got the California omelette with avocado tomato bacon and onion and I got the house omelette with sausage tomato creamy pesto and smoked Gouda. It was all delicious and reasonably priced. It is a hole in the wall type place and you can tell it’s been there a long time. The service was excellent. I would highly recommend it.

Advertise all the locals eat there so we stopped after seeing on our walks. Place is dark and dirty and felt like we had stepped back into time when the area was a quiet surf and fishing locale. Bloody Mary was poor, wife's omelet was runny and my order of small potatoes came out as hash browns. Waitress friendly on the positive side of things.

Went here because of the good reviews on trip advisor. Had poached eggs cooked hard as a rock and cold toast. Husband got ice cold eggs and potatoes with green peppers after asking for no green peppers. Made him new potatoes that were not even hot enough to melt the cheese they put on top. The fruit served with my meal was straight out of a can. I expect better in California. I can not recommend this place. Especially when there are so many other good choices.

Huge breakfast! Very happy we made the choice to go there. It was a great place to have breakfast and employees very nice!

We stumbled upon the Point Break Cafe the first morning of our trip. We like going to local spots and had a great breakfast sitting out on their patio. Huge menu with lots of delicious options and coffee was really good. We enjoyed it so much we went back a few days later. Definitely worth going!!

Nothing exciting but nothing wrong with it.... very average good stop for breakfast. Service OK... took a few hand waves to get coffee refills... but the food came quickly and there was lots of it..

This place looks like a dive. Our hotel had warned us about it's looks but said the food was really good, They were right. In addition to good food, you get lots of it. No leaving this place hungry.

Went there twice for breakfast. The portions were a good size, the service was good and I would consider the food good but not exceptional. But here’s the think that made me promise never to darken their doors again. On our second visit my wife and I both had the All American breakfast which included two eggs, sausage, hash browns and two pancakes. The waitress asked how we wanted are eggs done which was over easy. One of my eggs was broken but I let it go. They do not give you a copy of the bill, so after I paid the bill I asked for a printed copy as it seemed a little high. On the bill was a charge that said “Eggs $2”, now since two eggs already came with breakfast, I can only assume they charged the two bucks to FLIP them! Either way, we would never return…

I walked her with my teenage son. Not a family atmosphere, dingy carpet, outdated decor, and musty smell. We sat outside to get away from the bar. Low and behold, it was just us and the people from the bar that came out to smoke. The waitress was friendly enough, when she finally came. My steak was good. That's all. Not for families. More of a place that locals go after work to "tie one on."

The owner gets a zero. Been a loyal customer for a few years. Usual order patty melt. Requested bread crust be cut. Can’t do by owner’s order to cooks. Today, owner was there and I asked why? He went into a disgusting rant. Some of his comments to me: 1. I won’t answer that question. 2. You are not a kid. You’re a grown woman. Cut your own crust. 3. I won’t waste calories to answer that question. 4. That question makes me realize what is wrong in this world. 5. We give the best customer service in this area. He walked out of the restaurant, and I never got an answer as to why the cook can’t cut off the crust. So, we walked out, didn’t eat there, gave our server a $10 tip, and told her we’d never be back. Now, I apologize to the reader of this review for my rambling. I have NEVER been treated so rudely and disgustingly, especially by an owner (or any employee) of a restaurant. I’m a foodie and eat out daily. Yes, daily!! This totally disrespectful owner of Point Break Cafe has been CANCELED by me… first time I’ve ever cancelled anyone. Hope I never have to do it again. Lastly, their website has not been updated for a long time. The prices posted are way higher. I only know this by a comment made by a customer awhile back.

Great food, great service, indoor/outdoor, dog friendly, friendly people. If you like beer, wine, food, and friendly people and a juke box, a must very casual place, convenient Shelter Island Drive.

This cafe was a short walk from our hotel on Shelter Island and great stop for breakfast. Although from the street it looked like a dive, it had a great breakfast menu. The omelets were extremely large and delicious. The cafe does not have any windows. We had breakfast around 11 am and there were some people drinking at the bar.

Ate here a couple of years ago and it's still as good. It's a local bar that serves inexpensive freshly cooked food and a reasonable range of beers. We had lunch one day and dinner the next. It looks slightly run down but that's part of the charm and the staff are always so friendly.

Fast service but not super-friendly; just professional. Excellent Eggs Benedict. Bacon was outstanding too. House potatoes are delish--red potatoes with onions and red and green peppers.

If you want a traditional breakfast with a surfer diner feel, this is your spot. The coffee is hot, the service in perfectly paced and the food is good. You can come here, drink your coffee, read the paper and just enjoy a good breakfast.

Handy location of you are staying on Shelter Island. Bar atmosphere, outdoor seating available. Pancakes were good. Hashbrown potatoes were greasy patties, may have been frozen. You only get one slice of toast with meals. Servers are friendly and fun. Coffee was excellent.

Point Break is a great place to stop for breakfast. Our server, Ellen, was great, couldn't be better. She told us all about PB past. While it looks like a shack out side, it's the same inside! LOL The place is older than me, but don't let it stop you! The food was classic. I had the Chili Cheese Omelette and my friend has pork chops and eggs (see pix). Both of us were well fed, as well as well entertained by Ellen with her tales of the old days at Point Break on Shelter Island. This is one place you'll want to go to get out of the standard chain breakfasts as well as the upstart restaurants around San Diego. This place is history!

I have heard from other reviews that one could classify this place as a "dive". It kind of looks that way, but the food was pretty good. I had a "tequila" chicken dish, my wife had a steak. Both were surprisingly good in both flavor and presentation. My only issue was there was only one person working there who both tended the bar and waited on tables. She was pretty good at it, but I wondered what she would do if it was a busier night.

This restaurant was recommend to us by a local and we sure were grateful. We came into town for a Marine Graduation. Needless to say we had a large group. The owner and his girlfriend were so accommodating. Everyone in our group (12 people) were very pleased with their food. We started with lunch the first day we got there and ate breakfast and lunch just about every day after that. Loved their special house omelette. It different but very good. We will definitely go back next time to San Diego.

Two mornings in a row isn't nearly enough to try all the great choices on the menu. Most things done in house, including delicious meats. Large portions, friendly staff, delicious food, and hole-in-the-wall atmosphere.

This breakfast lacked flavor. There were three of us who ordered three different breakfasts, and each one was not very good...so bland that we did not consume much, and certainly will not be back.

On the recommendation of a local boat owner, we decided to try this small "hole in the wall" as he described it. After driving by numerous times, going on and off Shelter Island, we knew exactly where it was. We pulled in about 10:30am on a Monday morning. There was another table of 6-8 people and our family of 4. There was plenty of room for 50 more people (or so it looked). So, we were happy we missed the breakfast crowd. I had a Hawaiian Omelet w/ jalapenos and pepper jack cheese added. Along with a side of their home made corn beef hash. My wife who is on a strict diet, had an omelet with bacon, cheddar and broccoli. Each of our omelets came with toast and choice of potatoes or hash browns. One of my daughters ate my wife's sides and the other had chocolate chip pancakes. All of the food was amazing and if we are in the area again, we will be stopping by Point Break for some great food.

We stayed on Shelter Island and had breakfast here both days. It is easy to get to, has quick friendly service and very good food. The portions were ample and worth the price.
Great local diner food and friendly service
We went here for breakfast, wanting a less expensive alternative to the area's hotels. Found the Point Break Cafe to have very good local diner food, be reasonably priced and have very friendly service. The setting is more of a bar than a cafe. If you're not looking for a view of the bay, this place is for you. Would definitely go back for breakfast.
