There's a lot to choose...

By Kimberly K |

There's a lot to choose from here! The dishes are a little heavy. But they are usually pretty good.

Best sides of any BBQ anywhere

By Leaky B |

You can still enjoy great BBQ on a diet here. The always have fresh broccoli salad, fresh fruit (like watermelon), and a pico/black bean mix. And when you're being naughty, check out the corn casserole. Among other things. Friendly service always.

Average BBQ

By G B |

Just an average BBQ joint. Nothing to write home about... maybe it was just a bad day, but eh - just OK.

Don't let the strip mall exterior fool you...

By AustinEEE |

Inside you'll find great decor, extremely friendly service and wonderful BBQ with a zillion options for sides (both hot and cold). On top of that we enjoyed the pickles in the condiment bar and they had great ice team. We'll be back often! We certainly aren't BBQ experts, but this was some of the tastiest we've had.

Good stuff!

By 150hotelnightsayear |

We were very happy with the food. Even the fried okra was good (I cannot believe I said that). We had pulled pork, brisket, ribs, cornbread, Mac and cheese (delish). Nothing was bad - we enjoyed every bit of it!

YUM. Yum. Yum.

By crazyzeus1 |

We have been fans of PokEJos for decades. Nothing is better than a sliced briskit sandwich dripping with their fantastic sauce. We also love their sliced turkey, and they have a wonderful rice dish with broccoli and cheese. I have yet to find a BBQ place for a good price that can compare!

Always consistent and a value meal

By sbcarterclu |

You can always count on a value meal with excellent sides not often found at BBQ restaurants. I have eaten here on numerous occasions and the quality is always highly consistent. The BBQ is not Lockhart good, but then who is in Austin. It is highly flavorful and properly seasoned. The staff is top drawer!! If you are looking for a value meal with generous portions on the quick, this is highly recommended.

Now THAT's good bar-b- que!

By gliding_along |

I had lost all hope of finding any good bar-b-que in Texas. My favorite bar-b-que "joint" is Jack's in Nashville, Tennessee. I tried Saltlick and found it good, but not great. I really disliked Stubbs' fare. Then I had Pok-e-Jo's beef brisket. It was moist, bursting with flavor and tender. The staff was quick and attentive, willing to make suggestions about what to order. The restaurant is self-service and very homey. Definitely family friendly and there's plenty of elbow room

Affordable Counter Service and Great Condiment Bar

By Mary L |

DH and I were moving DS and DS/DSGF to Austin Texas from Baton Rouge, LA. We were weary from the trip and move in and seeking an authentic experience without having to dress up or drive far. We found Pok-e-Jo's Smokehouse and it was perfect. DH wanted the pork ribs, ME and DS the 2 choices... brisket and pulled pork. DSGF the pulled pork sandwich. The condiment bar is very nice with 3 types of pickles, and other choices. Tea = LARGE TEA BEVERAGE containers... that was nice. I actually drank and filled up again and 2 days later when we left our hotel room...brought this large cup of tea on the trip back home. THE OKRA. I didn't want to just subscribe to this but YES... THE OKRA the FRIED OKRA... if you want fried okra you should get it. The Jalapeno Corn casserole was great too.

best bbq i had in austin, including salt lick

casual dining with refillable soda. the brisket was delicious as was many of the sides.

Texas Girl Loves Pok-e-Jo's

By UrbanRuralHeather |

I typically go to the location at Hancock Center, on 41st between I-35 & Red River. I frankly hadn't expected to be very impressed, given that this is a chain restaurant (turns out it is a small, local chain), and it's located in a shopping center. However, this is the real deal, like the bar-b-cue I had as a kid. Pok-e-Jo's passed my first test when I walked in the door: intoxicating, savory, spicy and smoky heaven met my senses. Aah, REAL bar-b-cue. The sides are tasty, particularly the fried okra. I find it next to impossible to find restaurant fried okra that doesn't come from the freezer via some outside production plant. Pok-e-Jo's is fresh-tasting, crispy, hand-breaded, and made to order, just like homemade. The meats are always delicious, smoky, tender. I usually go for the brisket, sausage, and the pork loin (!), but find all the meat selections tasty. Don't skip the condiment bar, with sauces (regular & spicy), as well as the requisite sliced onion and pickles (esp. the spicy bread-and-butter pickles!). In my experience, the service at Pok-e-Jo's has been flawlessly friendly AND efficient every time. I don't care for the icy or plain-old rude service now standard in so many Austin SERVICE businesses. The place is clean, the employees work together as a team, and customers are made to feel welcome and comfortable. Management must be doing something right. My most-recent visit was yesterday, Fathers Day. My visiting baby brother (for years an ex-pat Texan living in California), and our father (now in a nursing home), honored Dad's request for bar-b-cue. When we walked in the door, they both stopped in their tracks. They just stood there for a few moments, taking in the aroma. After our order arrived, Dad, a bit frail these days, surprised us by heartily eating plate after plate of food. My brother went on and on about how good it was to have excellent Texas bar-b-cue after a long dry stretch. We're normally a talkative bunch, but there wasn't much conversation at the table.

Decent and close to shopping

By Kathy M |

Wasn't the best but good. They Only have sliced brisquet not chopped. Many side options. Order at the counter and they bring it out to you

Had their takeout for a working lunch

By colinacirc |

Brisket, sausage, and chicken bbq were so tender and flavorful served with good slaw and beans. Good call by our meeting coordinator

WOW, First Pulled Pork now Spicy Pork Sausage

By Saul S |

I was sad when I went in for the first time in a long time due to my travel and I found out they did not have any pulled pork available BUT THEN WOW they offered me some of the new Pork Sausage with cheddar and jalapenos and is was AWESOME.... Keep up the good work guys!

Good barbecue, but watch what they ring up

By EnjoymentOfLife |

Poke-e-Joe's is reliably good, traditional barbecue with all of the fixings. And there are several convenient locations around town. I am posting this on the South Austin location listing, but I more regularly visit other locations. My one and only complaint is a pricing one. Be careful how your order is rung-up if you order the Lo-Carb meal. The "Lo Carb" meal is meat only. You just decide what meat and whether you want a 1/2 lb or 3/4 lb. When you go to the register, though, do NOT say "1/2 lb" of whatever meat. They will charge you about a dollar or so more, because you can buy meat there by the pound. If you call it the "Lo-Carb" meat, it is cheaper for the identical meat and the same pounds. Its been this way for quite a while and I suspect they pick up a buck or two each day this way. I'm hopeful that's not the reason they do that, but you'd think they'd change it. I was tipped off to this by a register clerk a couple of years ago.

Another stop on The Austin BBQ Crawl

By Stick N Poke Jimmy |

Based on my BBQ points system of 1-10 . 1 being disgusting and 10 being outstanding. The meat rates a 4 The sides rate a 5 The sauce rates 6 Total score of 14 out of 30 I had the chicken very dry and not so yummy The ribs were ok very over cooked The brisket was over cooked to the point of crumbling. The Mac and cheese was average and fries were fries. I would rate them ahead of Bill Miller BBQ 5,3,1 total 9 of 30 And tied with Rudy's BBQ 5,6,3 total 14 of 30 Rudy's cooked the meat much better just too damn salty.. Polk-e-joes much cheaper. At least at joes you get what you pay for.

Great BBQ

By Cascey |

Really good BBQ! Nice smoke and really tender. Loved the peach habenero sauce. The regular sauce was OK. The macaroni and cheese is on point! Definitely a place to go.

Not Worth the Trip

By Michael B |

There at 7:30, brisket was dry, ribs were good, just out of heating oven Sides, red potato salad ok, Mac and cheese watery, Texas Toast only white bread, cold Not a fan of sauces, ribs were better without, brisket was better with sauce

First time experience

By Twinsguy |

I had a stop here for a business meeting. You order at a counter and either you take food with you or they deliver to your table. It's a bit fast food but quality of barbecue ribs were very good. Since I didn't get all of my food I can't rank it too high. Staff were friendly.

Excellent BBQ with any visit

By ALBERT CLIFFORD D |

I've been a weekly lunch regular with Pok-eJo's for 30 years! They are unbeatable! Good food, quickly presented to you in the cafeteria still food service line. Even with a line in front of you, it moves fast and your at your table very soon. I have never had a bad meal. I've tried most everything that they sell over the years. They are the best BBQ in Austin and with the service, I say they are the best BBQ dinner I've ever had anywhere in Texas.

Where it lacks in ambience, it makes up for food

By joidevivre |

One of the better BBQ places I visited during a recent trip to Austin. I tried Rudy's, Stubbs, Salt Lick, and this was one of the better tasting option.

Flavorful BBQ

By Jpamr5 |

Several of us visited on Monday, September 2, 2019, around 7:45PM. All the staff were friendly and welcoming. By that hour several of the meats were out, like the ribs. We selected the brisket and sausage with potato salad and coleslaw. Brisket was tender with good flavor. Sausage was excellent.

FABULOUS FOOD & Service

By Lauren S |

We had Pok-e-Jo's cater a dinner for about 15 ladies and the fajitas were ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!! We got the mixed fajitas with all the sides! I'm picky on my queso and guacamole but it was delicious. They came and set up everything at the house and did a great job and they were very prompt on getting there! So easy to talk to and we got everything we needed!

Absolutely yummy!

By LindaT2409 |

This was close to our hotel after we had flown in to Austin and we were really hungry. What a lucky find! The selection was what you would expect in meats, and sides, cold drinks and facilities. I think what makes it really great is the staff, they are friendly and check back after you've settled in with your brisket or turkey or ribs, and make sure you are happy and if you need anything. The sauce was amazing and the sides are fresh and tasty. I would definitely return.

They have Really Good side dishes to go with your BBQ

By Catarina |

It's not often that you find a BBQ restaurant that has delicious healthy sides such as broccolli salad, Texas Toast, and other fresh items. Great change from the typical limited slaw and beans that that other BBQ joints serve.

Great brisket

By Fdrl L |

Great brisket and sides. Good atmosphere and family dining. Cobbler is so good, you have to get some to try. Make sure you have room for this is well worth it !

Nice and fast ...

By Rudolf K |

We got a loaf of Bread, Fork, knife, and Spoon sets with Plates and the big Spoons and Tongs for getting the Food. Everything was Outstanding and also got the condiment bar of Onions, Several Kinds of Pickles, Jalapenos, and pico de gallo. We got extra Ribs and Chicken which was Good because were as Everything else was DELICIOUS. We went to the Brodie Oaks area Pok-e-Jo's. U have been to Multiple BBQ Restaurants in Austin area and This was the Most Outstanding BBQ, I have had in this area and especially the Chicken was moist and Favorable. So if You are in the area You should go. When We brought the Food Home it was attacked before I could get Puctures, but Trust Me it was Outstanding

Just ok

Visiting from out of state. Nothing to write home about. Average bbq. Disappointed in the sauce so opted out.

Huge portions & Great Value

By SMALLTOWN2BIGCITY |

Highly recommend this place! Ordered 2 meat plate with ribs and brisket, fried okra and jalapeño cornbread casserole, son got the sausage - we had to take half home! Cherry cobbler is also delicious 😋

This is what a great neighborhood restaurant should be!

By Margush |

How refreshing to have a consistently excellent BBQ place such a short drive from home. Pok-e-Joe's has moderately priced and delicious food and, for super-trendy Austin, that is a big plus! You will go right to the counter where you'll be warmly greeted, place your meat order, then your sides, collect your plate and pay. It's that simple. The space Is comfortable and clean with booths and tables long and short. The staff is one of the nicest around which is always a plus. In short, nothing fancy but one of our favorite places in town.

Business Meal

Excellent food; some selections are extra (found on receipt). Quiet setting. Regular BBQ sauce is very good; spicy pretty warm.

Good Texas Style BBQ

By Marshall T |

I am a visitor to Austin TX. I live in Wilmington, NC where BBQ is something different. In Texas it means different kinds of meat smoked and served with sauce. I had a 2 meat plate which included Texas pulled pork and sausage. Both were very tasty. I had sides of Mac & cheese and Cole slaw. Both were very good. The place is not fancy, but the food is good and that is what counts.

Whoa good stuff here!!

By Tjf4569 |

I'm not even done eating and I'm already writing my review. Walked in and asked the man behind the counter what's good? He proceeded to cut off small samples of everything and it was all good. Settled on 2 meat platter and was blown away how good it was. I might have to come to Austin more often. Real deal right here.

Awesome BBQ

By Cyndi B |

Went here with a group of friends and it didn't disappoint. Excellent prices, great variety to choose from (the turkey and brisket were wonderful), exceptional service from BBQ guys who know their stuff. We had a dozen people in our group and everyone had positive things to say about it.

True Texas BBQ!

By Happynonni |

This could quite possibly be THE best BBQ I have ever had! I had the brisket sandwich. Prices were very reasonable, too!

Not as good as Rudy's!

Still Outstanding!

By Bill D |

This place has consistently produced fine barbecue over the years and this last visit with the family was no exception. Chicken, brisket, sausage and turkey were all moist tasty, and wonderfully flavored with really solid sides. I particularly like the green bean casserole but the slaw is wonderful as are the pinto beans, and well....just any of the sides. This is a solid choice for barbecue lovers!

First Timers

By Rory E |

We are having Pok-e-Jo's cater our daughters wedding and had never been to the restaurant. (Daughters Choice) My wife and I ordered different items to try. The brisket and ribs were fantastic. Turkey and sausage were melt in your mouth great. Potato casserole, beans, corn bread casserole were great. One of the workers asked us a few questions and once we told him we were just trying things out, they brought us many other items off the menu to try. The staff were the friendliest we have seen in awhile. A++++ Food.

Overall the food is good

By A_TX_Traveler2013 |

We tried the 3 meat plate and between the 2 of us they were: brisket, turkey, sausage, and ribs. We for sure did not like the sausage. It was too slimy for our taste.

Great barbecue

By mattos_family |

It is a great place to go for a lunch time. Good food and nice atmosphere.

Small portions, just above average

By Javier O |

What seemed to be a good deal ended up being good amount of food, not that much meat. I guess I should have been suspicious when I saw you could get cobbler as a side. Flavor was fine, nothing out of the ordinary, but the amount of meat was so little it was just unfair. Got lots of sides, not enough meat. That's a no no for a meat joint. Never, ever sacrifice the amount of meat.

Really GOOD BBQ!

By Ken E |

I was visiting from out-of-town and wanted to have some Teaxas BBQ, since I used to live in Texas and now live in Kansas City. This is the place my brother picked for us. I had brisket and ribs, cole slaw and potato salad. I thought the food was great. The atmosphere is fun, nothing real special. From the looks of the outside I did not expect much, but I was pleasantly surprised by the quality. Definitely worth every penny! Go here, if at all possible!

Very tasty

By M J |

I had Sunday lunch with 7 family members at Pok-e-Jo's. All of our meals were very good. They have a great selection of side to go along with the BBQ. Between the 8 of us we ordered just about everything. The staff was friendly and the dining room was comfortable. We will be back.

I've found A new barbecue place that has knocked the socks off of me...the taste is so good I would come back again. It's better than other places I've been to.

Really good brisket sandwiches at affordable prices

By Polly O |

Went here yesterday with a friend. We both got brisket sandwiches and we were very happy with them. I asked for mine to be lean and the fat was carefully cut off. It was still juicy and tender, unlike some places when you ask for lean. Texas cowboy decor with burnt orange trays. Order at the counter and take your tray to an available table. Friendly staff.

over the top!

By Sandy D |

I was visiting Austin and wanted to taste Austin BBQ. If this is what it is I wish I could order it from home every night! It was excellent! Great choices, clean place, tender meat. It was awesome!!

Great food. Great price

By floridamom4 |

This restaurant offered great bbq and sides! We ordered one of the family meals and for about $50 we had WAY more food than we could possibly eat! Our favorites- the jalapeño cornbread and bbq chicken. The peach cobbler was amazing too!

30 years in Austin, something has to be right!

By DrSaulSmythe |

I have eaten at all 5 stores, there used to be 6 and 5th street was by far the best until the BBQ Comedy Review Managers went to other locations, and then the Condo Boom/Bust took over the location. All of the stores have the same great food and the staff in most of them are always great, Parmer Lane and Great Hills Trail have the best people, but they are all great folks and care about the dining experience of the guest. The stores are always busy at lunch between 12 and 1 but the line style service is fast and I like to see what they are putting on my plate even if it is more than I need, I just pack it up and take it back to the office. Someone will eat it if I don't.

Tough Ribs and Tasteless Brisket

By TK14 |

Had my first and last experience at Pok-e-Jo's BBQ recently. Three other friends joined me and all agree the ribs were not tender and the brisket was tasteless - more like roast beef with BBQ sauce poured over it. With all the many good BBQ's choices in Austin, we will not return.

Awesome food

Went there for lunch while in Austin. The BBQ was very tasty. Get the brisket and smoke sausage... I would highly recommend this place for a great meal

Good meal and great Value

By DavidP404 |

Very good BBQ. One of the few places left in Austin that has value for the dollar. I recommend this place. Nice people.
