Magnifico!

By OmniEpicurean |

Whenever we get over to this part of the city, we go to Pompeii. My apologies, but I cannot comment on anything else but the grilled chicken breast. I just cannot seem to order anything else because it is s-o-o-o good - two pieces of moist chicken breast nicely grilled (observe the professionally seared-in grill marks) served with rich lemon butter, basil, caper sauce (which I order extra of.) Add fresh bread that they serve with garlic, basil oil and pasta with butter garlic sauce and I am in heart attack heaven!!!~

Not What It Once Was

By Dolphin913 |

We've eaten at this restaurant numerous times and have never been disappointed until last night. The restaurant was nearly empty, however, the service was incredibly slow. I assume this was not the fault of our server but of the kitchen. I had Veal Parmesan which was tough and chewy. My wife's meal arrived 15 minutes after mine. I was nearly finished eating when hers showed up. This was once a terrific restaurant but has backslide horribly.

Not so good

By nurse420 |

Let me start off by saying the ambiance and the service are outstanding. From the moment we walked in the door we were taken care of. The prices are on the higher side but the portions are fairly large, but my wife and I both found it to be mostly inedible. She ordered the lasagna and while it took up a huge part of the plate, it looked like ground beef between a couple sheets of pasta, covered in melted cheese, swimming in red sauce. None of the usual texture of lasagna. I had the spaghetti with meatballs. The pasta was overcooked, two small meatballs (roughly the size of ping-pong balls), and so much sauce it wasn't appetizing. Also, the meatballs had no texture and less taste. The sauce on both of our dishes tasted metalic, like they just opened a can of Chef Boyardee and microwaved it. I can not imagine a situation in which we will be returning. I have honestly had better Italian food at Olive Garden.

Treat Yourself!

If you're ever in the great city of San Antonio, TX, do yourself a favor and visit this place. It's got it all-Ambiance: BIG! (although the floor plan is open, there's a level of comfort there I don't experience in other Italian eateries); Menu: wonderfully varied (AND GOOD-it starts with the bread); Prices: just right- for the wonderful meals they serve; Service: friendly, professional, efficient. What's left? Oh yeah: they serve luch SEVEN days a week until 4pm with great portion sizes at affordable prices! My favorite is the grilled salmon with pasta in white sauce. I simply cannot get enough of that dish! I've had other items off the menu too....

Superb!!

Another fabulous Italian dinner in San Antonio, Texas!!! This restaurant was highly recommended by a native of San Antone and was he ever right on! Waitress was excellent and made some suggestions...I told her that I love more garlic and seafood, no problem, we will make it just the way you want!! My dinner had shrimp, clams, mussels and salmon on a bed of linguini with garlic and butter sauce, delicious!! Along with a very nice glass of red wine and after drink of expresso & Sambuca with 3 coffee beans for good luck!! Love it and will return again & again!

Great Food and Service

I come here again and again as the food and service is so reliable. Great big portions of delicious food awaits you here. I have never had anything but the best service.

Dinner after work

The food was good but pricey and the portions were not large. Y I was hoping that they had spumoni for desert but they don't have it. Service was very good.

Saturday night dinner

This place is amazing. From pizza to chicken parm. Then mussels for the wife, she thoroughly enjoyed them

This place still has the pizzaz.

Hadn't eaten here in 8 or 9 years. My loss to be sure. Had a business associate in town (New Braunfels), and decided to take the off the beaten path route in to San Antonio. Passing by on Nacodoches Road and seeing Pompeii brought back fond memories so we backtracked and ate dinner here last Saturday. The lighting seemed to have improved which was an immediate good vibe. Our waitress Rosa stopped by quickly to introduce herself and take drink/appetizer orders. Water and hot fresh bread arrived in under two minutes. She had several tables and all were well attended. Smooth and a delightful person indeed. Now to the food-----. I ordered pasta di mare which is one of my all time favorites that I had not previously tried here. Decided to try the upgrade Pompei salad as well. What a splendid idea. I could go on and on about that in itself, but let it suffice to recommend it highly. Would be a terrific lunch all by itself. I write this review after having finished off my leftovers that were enough to fill a skillet. The dish itself was absolutely the best I have had at any dining establishment. By a large margin at that. Only in Spain have I had octopus cooked as perfectly, and the mussels(over a dozen), shrimp, clams, and salmon were all cooked equally as well. This meal is easily enough for two very hearty eaters like me. Rosa looked at the platter and immediately decided to bring me extra sauce which I appreciated tonight. Just a splendid old world atmosphere restaurant with happy and engaged staff. I peeked into the semi open kitchen and saw both teamwork and lighthearted banter. I appreciate any business that has a positive work environment feel. I will be introducing lots of folks to this restaurant in the near future.

Pompeii Italian Grill

Pompeii Italian Grill has a nice selection of menu items. The setting is very attractive and intimate. The food is excellent and nicely presented. The service is good.

Nice place, nice food

By Harold T |

I ordered Veal Marsala, my favorite Italian dish. The sauce was excellent but the veal was chewy. Side of spaghetti was pretty ordinary. A decent Pinot Grigio. Good service and typical decor.

Good Italian eats

By Charlene C |

The restaurant is quite large and the parking lot was very full when we arrived. We figured we'd have a wait for a table, but surprisingly, the restaurant was sparsly occupied (there was a large party of high school girls at a private party). Service was very good and overall, the food was quite good. I was disappointed in my Italian wedding soup though as the broth, which should be rich and flavorful, lacked in both areas. It was more like a watered down broth...not a stock. The meatballs were good as was the greens (spinach, I think), but rather than an 'egg drop', I had more like an egg plop. Large pieces of egg rather than the light little layers you should get in each bite. The bread was ok...nothing to write home about. It was a pleasant experience; be aware that their portions are quite large and can easily be shared. I had the soup (which is a large bowl) and the appetizer portion of eggplant parmesan. It was more than I could eat. Our friends had the fettucine alfredo, chicken marsala, spaghetti and meatballs, italian sausage cacciatore and lasagna. Everyone enjoyed their selections. We felt the pricing was right in line with other comparable restaurants.

Never going back!

By Jessica G |

Just had the worst time at this restaurant. And I have been going here for the past 10 years! Even worked there for 4. I even asked for their food to be the last thing I ate before I left to Iraq in 02. And for Mazu, the owner to be so rude. I even had my wedding there! And my baby shower!

Ok

By Misterbunns |

This place had some great features such as a decent size portions, fresh salad, and some really good bread. Wife's eggplant parm was excellent as was the pasta that accompanied it. The ravioli was tasty but lacked that pizzazz I was expecting from a higher end restaurant. It was also just lukewarm that also detracted from the flavor.

A warm environment for any eating occasion that includes great food with overall good value.

By Kayaking-Flatwater |

The Pompeii Italian Grill is set apart from many others because of its consistent good food and great service. It's easy to take this restaurant for granted because of this consistent goodness. It is a great place for families, dates, and friends. The friendly atmosphere is wide open with high ceilings and roomy dining areas. The prices are very reasonable for the amount of food with the entrees I've sampled the appetizers to find the calamari is reasonably price for what you get. The Pompeei Shrimp appetizer is a bit skimpy with only five shrimp for $10-$11. The menu offers plenty of choices for everyone. Many of the evenings I've eaten at Pompeii, they have live entertainment in the form of a harpist. A couple can easily eat at Pompeii for $30-$40 and leave with a to-go box. Getchyasome!

One of Two Choice Neighborhood Itals

Pompei is still a great Ital restorante at moderate price. Don't miss any of the chicken dishes especially the Alfredo and the Mustard (which is treally a creamy lemony type. Great service as well

Family lunch

We were hesitant to try related to one of the reviews. But. We are glad we did. It was so good. The staff was very attentive. The food was bountiful and fresh. Thank you for making our dining experience while in Texas enjoyable. From The 7 of us from Oklahoma.

Divine & flavorful

By TeriDR |

Visited Pompeii for Tuesday L. 1st visit. A bit more than I'd normally spend on L ($11 & up) but so glad I now know a nice, very good Italian place. I'd go here for a nice occasion, but I wouldn't wear shorts & tennis shoes kind of place. They immediately brought us bread & a garlic olive oil mixture in which to dip it. Bread was underwhelming compared to rest of meal, ambiance, etc. I expected a nice crusty bread & theirs is like a sub roll or hamburger bun. Of their 4 or 5 diff fish (salmon, snapper, barramundo sp?, trout), I had mahi-mahi ($15.99 I think) w/butter sauce which comes w/side of spaghetti--mind you, there's no choice here like linguini or angel hair, only spaghetti. U can select from 3 or 4 pasta sauces. All entrees come w/a house; or upgrade to caesar salad. Their house creamy italian dressing was drinkable. Haven't enjoyed a house salad like that in awhile. & it was just lettuce, cucumbers, carrots, nothing special but tasted wonderfully refreshing. Mom had the shrimp & even tho the dish came w/only 4 or 5 shrimp they were huge. It was so 'yum' we ordered a personal pizza to go. My main critique is I never got a water refill, only 1 waiter in our area. All in all, the flavors were so tasty we'll definitely try them again even tho they don't have a military discount. L is thru 1600/4 PM ! Even on Saturdays!

Awesome food, music is way too loud.

By DriveInwoes |

We've been to Pompeii multiple times. I LOVE their bread and I always eat the Grilled Chicken over Fettucini Alfredo. This time was different though; they had a musician playing an instrument that was kind of intrusive and definitely too loud. It was not nice, soothing music and my husband and I had to talk loudly to each other while we sat right next to each other. We asked the server about it and they admitted that it was a problem but nobody liked to mess with the volume. I will be back to Pompeii for their excellent menu but no again on a Friday or Saturday night for dinner.

Eggplant Parm

By Barbara G |

Food is great and service is OUTSTANDING. The Eggplant Parm is the best ever. And the Chocolate Cannoli is magnifico!!!!!!!!!! Enough for two but you don't want to share :) Highly recommend when you are in the San Antonio area or if you already live in San Antonio - it is a must.

Best Italian Food

By mdcwa |

Pompeii has some of the best Italian food I have had. When we arrived, we were immediately seated. Bread with olive oil was brought to the table as we sat down. We had the chicken marsala and the chicken piccata. Both were outstanding. Meals came with pasta and a salad. Service was very attentive with beverages refilled promptly. For a great server ask for Shayne. He made the meal very enjoyable. Next time we are in San Antonio, we will visit again.

Good place to gather

By Mike R |

We chose this restaurant as a family dinner gathering and a centralized location. The service and atmosphere was good and friendly. The food was good Italian, not the greatest but quite good, with good bread and oil and a dinner salad.

Fabulous Food and Service

By David P |

We went as part of 3 couples for a friend's birthday. Called and made same day reservation, then they acccommodated us after we had a second call to delay our arrival time. Seated immediately upon arrival by the gracious hostess, we were given time to review the menu and the specials. All courses were served timely and, unlike some places, no one had to sit and wait while others were eating. Everyone loved their plates. We shared 3 different appetizers prior. The food set the tone for our enjoyable evening.

My birthday

By Melissa M |

I love coming here. The service is wonderful so I decided to come for my birthday every thing was perfect. The food is better than Olive garden they give you more on our plate than O.G... I won't stop coming here.. if you haven't tried it you must

Looks like a big fancy Italian Restaurant, BUT...

By BoiseBeaker |

Sadly, this was our first visit to Pompeii, and the result is the worst review I've ever given on Trip Advisor. To be perfectly honest...we were very disappointed with the quality of our food. We ordered chicken parmesan from the "Lunch" menu. It was clearly NOT cooked fresh. The taste, texture and consistency resembled a pre-cooked (perhaps the day before) chicken breast, then tossed in the oven to "melt the cheese and warm it up" then doused with sauce to hide the truth. Our meat was tough and dense. The restaurant has a "BIG ITALIAN RESTAURANT" vibe when you first walk in...but after a trip to bathroom and a look around this is a "declining" business. Half the sinks in the bathroom were working. I normally give the staff an opportunity to "fix it" on the spot, but we were invited by another couple to join them for lunch and didn't want to embarrass them. Sorry for the brutal honesty, but Pompeii didn't earn my future business on this visit.

Wonderful food!

By Txgal |

Great specials daily and menu selections excellent. Had my birthday dinner here recently. You must have their Calamari Appetizer. It is like sliced steaks not the tiny chewy style of most restaurants! Service has always been excellent when I have dined there. The only draw back can be noise if it is jam pcaked with people. It doesn't have carpeting and has a high dome style ceiling. Highly recommend it!! You will not leave hungry but with enough food for lunch the day after!

Very disappointed.

By judybh3ah |

I have been wanting to try this place for a while now and finally got the chance this past Sunday. The decor is really nice, it is popular but I was expecting authentic Italian food. I ordered Chicken Marsala- it tasted like it was made with powdered brown gravy mix and the cook used a very sweet wine for the wine in this recipe and it was horrible! I did not complain but I will honestly never eat here again. My husband ordered the Chicken piccata and his was ok. The servings are large but the food tastes watered down. That is the only way I can describe it. I never thought of myself as an Italian food snob but after eating at Carrabbas , I am spoiled. The house salad was bland at best. My dish came with a side of spaghetti with a choice of sauce- I chose marinara, the noodles were over cooked and the sauce was very bland. We did order a dessert and it was Good. The vanilla bean ice cream was good also. I would go back to have wine and a dessert, but not the food. The service was good.

Still Awesome

By Sarah W |

Stopped here on way through San Antonio. We used to frequent this restaurant when we lived in the area. Bread w oil and garlic so yummy....I got my menu favorite chicken picatta with angel hair pasta and a Caesar salad. Hubby got spagetti and meat sauce. Portions were very large. There were so many things that sounded good on the menu. Love this restaurant and am so glad its still so fabulous!

Large group dinner...very well done

By wemarionFishnGolf |

We’ve started to make this our annual place to have our group dinner. Food is always good, service is spot on despite the group size, and the separate group room is quiet. They even do separate checks! This is a combination often hard to find. It doesn’t look like much on the outside but the inside is very Italian... and the food is classic Italian... oh, and the fresh bread and garlic oil is great.

Great food and service

By bears60 |

There were six of us and we were seated immediately when we arrived. The server was very friendly and courteous. The house salad was very fresh and tasty. My spaghetti and meatballs were hot and delicious and was plenty of food for the lunch specials. My wife's lasagna was also hot and plentiful. The server never let our drink glasses go empty. The restaurant is very clean as are the bathrooms. You will not be disappointed in this restaurant.

dont waste your time

By joey g |

Decided to try this place out and i should have never gone. the caesar salad was slimy and to try to make it better they covered it with dressing. The entrees came out and the main dishes were not hot at all. Although the side of spaghetti was hot. When i called to to let them know the quality control sucked they only had excuses and the owner got on the phone and did not offer to make it right or even have anything to say. i feel as if they stole $40 of mine. My advice to anyone is go somewhere else to eat. Even applebee's italian choices would be better or even HEB frozen or Canned would be better.

Excellent food, but amazing staff is the standout

By JohnsonIV |

I had passed Pompeii without a thought for a long time, but I am very glad I finally came in for dinner. The staff the standout to me, but the food and atmosphere was excellent as well. The staff was warm, friendly, patient, and had a great sense of humor and respect for customers. Our waitress Renee in particular was the epitome of excellence and was a pleasure to interact with, especially as she parried with my father's sense of humor, holding her own -- and hopefully having fun too! -- while never showing any disrespect or lack of professionalism. (Thank you again, Renee!) Foodwise, the bread is outstanding. (To be honest, it was far -too- outstanding since it led to us eating far too much of it, and it created schisms at our table. In the latter case, two members of our party who normally like the heels of bread loaves complained that they were receiving much smaller pieces of the bread, while those of us who accommodated their desire for the heels saw no problem in our portions of the bread and sought to maintain that through each loaf that was returned -- until Renee evilly stepped in and ensured that the other two got hold of a loaf first.) The sauces were wonderfully balanced and flavorful. The calamari appetizer was meaty, lightly breaded, and had very good flavor; it was served more in the shape of hefty French fries, which was a type of presentation I had not seen before. The pasta had good flavor, but my only complaint (as a pasta addict) is that the excellent sauce overpowered the pasta in my dish; although I enjoyed the dish, I will try a dish with a lighter sauce (or an extra plate of pasta) the next time I visit. To me, the restaurant was surprisingly large. And as other reviewers have said, the atmosphere is such that you would be equally comfortable in casual or dress clothes. And one last time let me say, the staff was outstanding.

Great Italian food!

By James S |

I hadn’t had much luck finding good Italian food since I moved to Texas a few years ago, but went here on the recommendation of Macaulay. Let me just say the food was fantastic. It’s authentic. It has great flavor and it’s served and presented well. I have been back a few times for business lunches as well as taking my wife here. It’s a little bit of a drive depending on where you’re at, but it’s worth it ask for Susie she has been my waitress a few times and she has attentive and always a joy to have as a server.

It was a So, So experience

By funkikker |

The place was recommened by friends. Even read that it was voted #1 for Italian food. Walked in smelled musty. Then while sitting at the table you could see why it did. The ceiling was very dirty and stained. The wait staff was very good. The food was nothing to write home about. Not worthy of a second trip nor the drive from downtown.

One of my faves!

By Dennis M |

This time had an individual pizza and beer at the bar. Fast and courteous service and the pizza was quite good and quite large. Had to get a doggy bag!

ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!!

I went for the 2nd time and was completely impressed by the waitress / waiter and the cleanliness of the facility. The food was great and I will definitely come back! Thank you for the great experience!!

A tasteless anniversy

By uttony62 |

This is a neighborhood restaurant that has been around it seems like forever it has always been one of our favorites but on our last trip in April it was a pretty tastless adventure. We quit coming a few years ago just because we had eaten there so much we needed to try other places. The parking lot was not as full as it once was and it was very easy to get a seat with know one around. I have always enjoyed the waitstaff here over the years they always have a smile and you never have to wait for your food. This was the first time we were were both talked out of the dish that we wanted and went with what the waitress recommended. And so the trout was fishy and the tortalinne had no flavor. We will go back again one more time and give it a go...is this why there were no cars in the parking lot??

Great atmosphere and even better pizza!

By LPALOTE |

Great atmosphere and even better pizza! This was a great recommendation from Tripadvisor. We walked in and the place is pleasant to the eye and it smelled fantastic. We were seated promptly and the tea tasted delicious. The pizza was very fresh and hot. We can't wait to go back again.

Just no

By Cassie V |

The Ceasar Salad was terrible, tasted like dirt. The Lobster Ravioli tasted more like Krab than lobster. The seafood sauce was ridiculously cheesy. The ravioli was made in house but poorly. So thick it was like they used lasagna noodles for it. The tomato sauce was one note: tomato. No other seasonings. The service was slow.

Nice Place, Good Food

By Michael Schlatter |

First, we had a group of ten with no reservation. They were able to accommodate us in a short amount of time. Very commendable. I had the veal piccata that I would rate somewhere between good and very good. The house salad that came with it had a nice variety of greens and a very nice house dressing. I had a spaghetti side dish with garlic butter sauce. It was okay; it could have had more garlic taste to it. It was a little too bland for my taste. The house Chianti was very nice. When we ordered three glasses, the waiter said we'd be better off ordering a bottle. So we did. I can't speak for my friends about their meals, but everyone certainly seemed to enjoy their food. At the end of the evening, our waitress had already paired up each couple's bill and gave us separate checks. That was most appreciated, especially since so many restaurants are reluctant to do that. All in all, it was a very pleasant evening and I'm sure we'll return soon.

We will be back!

By Carrie T |

Amazing! So glad we found this place. Their homemade bread with the fresh herbs in olive oil for dipping is divine. I had the Chicken Marsala and my husband had the Linguine Di Mar. Both were so good. We ate way too much and had no room for dessert! Great wine list. They had live music, and this is going to sound old, but it was nice the volume was at a level where everyone could still carry on a great conversation without yelling or straining the hear. Will definitely be back the next time we are in town!

Fun for large groups!

By Isha A |

I recommend this place if you have 20 or more people. Very accommodating ! We gave them a heads up about our large group, and they were prepared for us before we arrived.

Traditional Italian...recommended

By Beachluvinfamily |

Family friendly traditional Italian restaurant with a superior wine list. Bread is very good and was served with olive oil. Great location for family or business meals. Our server was excellent and offered recommendations when asked. Best meal I had all week, really good! Enjoy!

Pretty Darn good

By Gerald200202 |

So gone to Pompeii twice now, and both times I had both great food and great service. My server's name was Brain, and he was super fast when it came to service. I explained that I've it was my first time there and he recommended the shrimp pompeii, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The shrimp was perfect and the sauce was amazing. The second time I went and he had me try something else, I think it was some chicken with rocotta cheese in it. All their portions are huge so you get your money's worth, gone to Pompeii twice now, and both times I had both great food and great service.

A new surprise, for me. Most delightful.

By botanicalsa |

Although I've never been to this restaurant my significant other had many years ago. We had a wonderful evening. We sat at the bar for their Happy Hour and chatted with the bar tender. A delightful lady. When ready to eat we asked to be seated in an area of their large restaurant to enjoy the most talented Harp player. He was a delightful surprise. We could have listened to him play all night. note: The gentleman play's be ear! We bought one of his cd's. It was very enjoyable background music to a delicious meal. Tips are appreciated for his talent, if you are so inclined? The restaurant was quite busy for awhile and we noted they also had a good take-out business. To begin our meal, I ordered a cesar salad. It was perfect. Very much to my liking. For my entrée, I ordered my all-time favorite, speg. carbonara. Their menu uses linguini, which is almost the same. It had way too much sauce for my preference. Our waitress said next time just ask for 1/2 the sauce. The waitress said they try to accommodate a revision to a menu item "if it's possible". Although she didn't state it, one should expect there can be an added cost to a menu change if it's above the normal menu offer. That's perfectly acceptable to us. A special request does sometimes add extra demands on the kitchen staff. Our meal was of good portions, and we brought some home to have for dinner another night. My linguini and his veal. Yums! Saw some delicious looking desserts, but we didn't order any. Too full from our meal! Moderation next time, so we can try some of those! Kudos to the restaurant and staff. We look forward to a return visit.

Relaxing Lunch Spot

Nice place for lunch - generous portions on the lunch menu items. Excellent house salad and the hot bread with olive oil just hits the spot.

Service: 10 Food: 05

By Kae370 |

On a busy Sunday -after church- afternoon, seated in a very busy section, we received the most attentive service of any restaurant that I visited during my 2 weeks of SA dining while in town on business. That being said, the Italian Wedding Soup and Lunch Lasagna were both a disappointment. Okay....but not a repeat worthy meal. Though, I will revisit for dinner on my next SA trip. I think there are hidden gems on their menu.......we'll see!

Must Eat here!! Fabulous Food!!

By Ellen M |

I told my boyfriend. "How do you know we're not at Olive Garden?" He's all "because we're here" and I said no "because this food has FLAVOR!!" To which he chucked and agreed. Amazing meal. It was our first time and we will definitely be back. His Chicken Marsala had a very Robust FLAVOR. My Chicken Picatta creamy, lemony with capers and FLAVOR!! Just the way I like it. Homemade Bread. Fabulous waitstaff and enough for lunch tomorrow!! I cannot recommend highly enough! EAT HERE!!

Good Food - Nice Atmosphere

By MostlyTexan |

My wife likes Pompeii and goes with her friends when they meet, and we have gone twice the last couple of months because I was using a credit card that got me bonus miles on an airline for the first use (somehow the first time we went didn't count...). The last time we went I was a bit put off by the amount of time it took to be served on a day when hardly anyone was there. This time it was quite a bit better, but still slower than it should have been considering how many people were there. But the food was wonderful and our waitress did everything she could to make our visit enjoyable. I had the grilled trout with spinach as a side instead of pasta (damn carb diet) and a great Caesar salad. I couldn't eat any of the large roll they give you - but having had it before I know it's great. My wife had the Parm Shrimp and since I got to have a few she couldn't eat I can say it was very good as well. We always go early (5 or so) so I don't know what it's like when it get busy - but the food is worth a bit of a wait.

Home grown Italian

Definitely not a chain. Large venue, good for groups, parties, Two private dining rooms, we met for lunch when there is a special lunch menu. Servings are generous and tasty. Wedding soup delicious, Bread a disappointment for an Italian restaurant. Would recommend for family or night out ... full service bar. Service excellent. Hurray, Bobby.

Good Service with Large Portions

This is a regular haunt for us when we crave Italian food. You can count on large portions to have something to take home and eat later as well as really good service.

Shrimp Pompeii!

By reeltxn |

I forgot how fantastic the shrimp Pompeii is! So decadent and delicious 😋 Hubby had his favorite, chicken mustard and loved it also. Don’t forget the bread and dipping oil...delicious!!!

great food, every time

By sonnydee671 |

The food is always excellent. I just wish the service was better. The last 2 times we visited, we had less than awesome service. Its a nice restaurant with great ambiance, just wish the service was great.

Nice place for family dinner

By Bearwife |

This is a classic family Italian restaurant, with a big heavy dark door, dim lighting, traditional tables and cupids frolicking in blue skies on the ceiling entrance. Service was great. Our salads, the kids’ pizza, and our pasta entrees were all great and absolutely enormous. Very reasonable prices.

Too expensive

By dinah a |

Have been coming here for over 25 years. It used to be a lovely meal at a reasonable price. Back in the day, lunch specials included salad and iced tea. Not any more. One Chicken Napolitano, one shrimp with pasta, one iced tea, $50. At lunch. These two little old ladies will not be back. Way too expensive! The waiter did replace my friend's lasagna, which she did not like, with the shrimp and didn't charge for the lasagna , which is as it should be. The food was excellent, just way too expensive. Interestingly enough, there were very few diners at lunch. Maybe there's a reason...

Fantastic food, service, ambiance -- Excellent

By parodyqueen |

We were taken to Pompeii yesterday (March 2013), for lunch for four people. The waiter did an over the top job of checking on us, filling our glasses, and seeing if we needed anything. Every dish came to the table piping hot, the salmon and tilapia were cooked to perfection, the cheese ravioli was wonderful. There wasn't a bad thing about this place, thus five stars.

Delicious Italian food

By Divascribe2 |

I tend to be wary of big chain restaurants when it comes to Italian food, having had some less-than-stellar dishes at some of them. But Pompeii has great Italian food. On a recent visit, I had ziti with spinach and other veggies, and it was great. Their bread is good, too, and they have a sizable wine list as well. It is a big restaurant so it can be a little noisy, so it doesn't fit the old stereotype of the neighborhood Italian place. Still, my companions and I were able to carry on a conversation without shouting at each other, which is saying something nowadays.

Never Disappoints

By djarw |

Everything here is delicious. I've never had a meal I'd criticize. I love that their tomato sauce is not overcooked or too salted/ over seasoned. The staff and owners are so friendly and accommodating. Can't believe I'm just now reviewing this establishment as, I've been dining with them since back in the day when they were cafe milanos on Nagodoches north of O'Connor road. Great atmosphere and great food!

Good food and service but very depressing atmosphere

By arlyn1 |

Went there with friends and enjoyed the food and the service was great but the place is depressingly dark even during the day. It was dark to the point I could barely see what my food looked like. Unless they brighten this place up I won't be back.

Not so good.

By TexasJeffy |

There are much better choices in the area for good italian food. I would skip this one when planning your trip. We had lazy service and food that was comparable to a frozen dinner.

Simply great!

My family and I have been coming here for years. Great food, drinks and ambiance. Gave this place a 4 do to the overturn in waitstaff. If your lucky and get a tenured waiter or waitress, your visit here will be awesome.

Very good Italian

By txteacher_girl |

Stopped on our way home today, and we weren't disappointed. Yum! The bread was warm, the salad was cold, and the pasta was cooked well. Both my husband and I enjoyed our lunch and couldn't finish our meals. I brought enough with me for at least one more meal, maybe two. Restaurant was clean, servers were friendly, and the food came out quickly. I tried the Fettuccine Alfredo, and it was quite good. My husband's Chicken Nopalatina was delicious! I would order that dish next time! Prices were comparable to most Italian restaurants we've eaten at. Highly recommend if you're in the San Antonio area and want to try a place away from the crowded Riverwalk!

Great food, good atmosphere and a friendly staff.

This is a restaurant that my wife and I frequent. The staff is always friendly and helpful, the owners are very gracious and the food is quite good. My favorite is the veal parmigiana.

Average to slightly above average; not terrific

By MuffetB |

The service was generally very good and professional. However, our server failed to inform us of the daily specials, which I only discovered written on a white board when I visited the Ladies Room. The specials looked of interest, and I probably would have ordered something off-menu had I known of it. The salad was good, an ample serving. I had Chicken Picatta, which was excellent. The side of pasta was served with a rather blah, non-descript sauce and I had to ask for more, as the spaghetti was dry. Hubby had chicken parmesan, which was good, though not the best he's ever had (his words). I very much liked the olive oil infused with garlic and herbs for dipping the bread. Honestly, the bread was average, but the dip made up for it. This restaurant was good, but not so terrific that I would go running back!

Love it!

Been here several times and have always had a great experience. Love the food, love the setting. Live music on the week ends, but not so much so that you can't have a conversation at your table. Good choices on the menus, even for a vegetarian and always wonderful deserts & coffee. A relaxing place to enjoy a great meal and good friends.

Awesome time

Beverly was an awesome waitress, very personable and funny. I love the bread and the sauce was great. Worth the stop. They have lunch and dinner specials. Check it out.

Delicious

By Nancy D |

We enjoyed the delicious bread with dipping olive oil as soon as we sat down. Oil was seasoned with garlic and basil. All the food was delicious...

Mixed feelings...

By Traveltheorient |

I had chicken Parmesan and my wife had grilled chicken.... The salad that first came was very lame.... The meal was OK; my wife's grilled chicken was better.... The best part was the bread and olive oil... The service was friendly and OK... Maybe it was an off night for them, I don't know. This was our first time here...

Superb Ital at Very Reasonable Prices

By TexasRaf |

Almost like a neighborhood Ital restaurant but on a slightly larger platform. The food is superbly prepared and mouthwatering. we've been going for years; the food never gets bland; the service is always top drawer; and the atmosphere is quite charming. The owners pride in being great across the spectrum of the culinary presentation is quite obvious. And that degree of attention to detail shows in their staff...first rate. (ask for server Bobby)

Excellent atmosphere and enjoyable Italian food

By BLocke03 |

It's not often I eat Italian food in San Antonio, but this is certainly the restaurant for it! Upon entry you feel you have travelled to Rome with the vividly painted copulas. The menu offers numerous Italian dishes with enough options to entice any guest. Portion sizes are large, which is likely why the prices can be a bit expensive. The complimentary bread is delicious, though be wary of eating too much and not having room for both your entree and side salad. I also enjoyed the seasonal pumpkin sweet potato tart for desert!

HOT delicious food

By bears60 |

We were seated right away and our server was very friendly and courteous. The service was excellent! My Lasagna was plentiful and delicious. The salad was very fresh and the dressing was very tasty. The bread was very good. The chicken parmesan was fork tender and also HOT and delicious. The Spaghetti was plentiful and cooked to perfection. The restaurant is very clean as are the bathrooms. You will not be disappointed in this restaurant.

i've liked everything i've tried here.

Great Food and Staff

By SLSharpe |

I was visiting friends here and they patronize this restaurant alot - and I know why. The service was excellent and the food is better than excellent. There were 6 of us and we shared our entrees, so I tasted six different dishes plus an appetizer, and everything was very tasty! I will definitely return here on my next trip.

Christmas Eve Dinner

By Terry D |

Took the family to Pompeii Italian Grill for a Christmas Eve treat. We each ordered a combination of Italian and seafood. None of us were disappointed as the food and service was great. This is an excellent place to go to for special occasions.

A great place for dinner!

By jmullins762 |

My wife and I went to dinner here on New Year's Eve with our children and grandchildren. We were able to get in with no reservations. The food was excellent, the service was great and the prices were very reasonable! A party of six and a baby all ate for $100 with tip included! I will definitely go back when in San Antonio!

Great Place for large groups

By ChinaPete65 |

The service for a large group is outstanding and attentive. They have no problem doing separate checks, AND it has been our experience that they leaved the amount of the gratuity up to you instead of adding the automatic 15 - 18% that many places do. Nice variety on the menu which has shrunk since they first opened. The ravioli appetizer and small house salad I used to order is not on the menu. The portions are large, except for the Shrimp Pompeii which is the only dish my wife orders. I've had chicken, fish, and sausage dishes. The Pompeii Pizza comes a bit overloaded with sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, peppers, and onion. Always have about half left over to take home. Crust is a little thick and chewy. Overall a great place to eat.

If you love Italian food, you'll LOVE Pompeii Italian Grill

By Patricia D |

This is my FAVORITE restaurant in the San Antonio area! The food is outstanding...especially their Chicken Alfredo. I've never been there for dinner, but lunch is superb! The service is wonderful and when we each asked for a "go" box for the huge amount of left-overs, the waitress brought us EACH fresh loaves of bread to take home too...and there were SIX of us! Where do you EVER find that happening?

The Italian Experience

By ElAlamo |

This is my most favorite local restaurant, my wife and friends dine here on a regular basis. Having spent many months in Italy in the 60's and in later times I have found this restaurant to be authentic in its menu, the staff to be always helpful and attentive. The food is always well served and tasty and is well priced, at what I would call medium price range. Whatever your tastes are you will always find something on the Menu to suit your taste, two of our favourites are Shrimp Pompeii and Chicken Parmigan.

Good Italian Food - Great Service

By shadow17 |

This was our first visit to the Pompeii Grill and we were not disappointed. Based upon a review by a local restaurant critic I had the Chicken Napolitana, others had Osso Buco, Grilled Tilapia and Linguini Carbonara. These dishes were all cooked to perfection. The Ceasar Salads were pretty bland - not sure if the restaurant makes its own dressing, but it was missing the usual "kick" that the Ceasar dressing. Possibly the Anchovies were left out. Also the side dish of pasta with Marinara sauce was quite tart. The wine menu is limited but we were able to select a good Chianti which was moderately priced. We had the most delightful server - Beverly. Very knowledgeable and fun plus her service was top-notch The bar drinks are quite good and they do not skimp on the alchohol. The restaurant has a very nice ambiance to it, very easy to find and lots of free parking.

Fab food!!

By ridergirl1991 |

We went for supper and the food was so good! From snapper,to pizza,to lasagna the meal was great! There was a guitarist playing in the background and it was so relaxing.Would def go back!

Not a good experience!

By WildHaireAdventures |

It's hard to review this place. First off, the food was very good and our waitress was amazing. The bread was also very good. Now, my problem with this place. I felt the prices were a little high to begin with, but we ordered off the menu provided. We ordered off the lunch special portion. Upon checkout, we were informed that the manager wasn't honoring lunch special prices because it was Valentine's day. Very bad customer service in my opinion. You might want to tell people that you are going to price gouge them before hand. We won't return!

Wonderful food and great service

By arcfjss |

Every aspect of our dining experience was wonderful. I am a vegetarian and our server was willing to check with the kitchen staff to ensure that my desired food items were indeed vegetarian. Additionally, the kitchen staff were willing to modify an entree to make it vegetarian. The minestrone soup was served extremely hot, full of vegetables, and was absolutely delicious. The Linguini Sun Dry, which had an abundance of artichoke hearts and dried tomatoes, was awesome. The portions were extremely generous and the prices were reasonable considering the high quality of the food and the portion-size. The next time we are in town, we will definitely eat at the Pompeii Italian Grill.

Save your money and go someplace where they appreciate and value their customers.

My husband called and spoke to a gentleman and reserved the small party room for my birthday dinner, two weeks before my birthday. I chose this place because my husband and I had been a few weeks before for date night and it was delicious. The day of my birthday, January 4, he called back and spoke to a gentleman to confirm his reservation. That night, we arrived at 5:50pm, or reservation was at 6. We noticed another party standing near the hostess station but didn't think anything of it. After waiting 10 minutes, a young lady approached us and said that she didn't know what happened, but we didn't have the small room because the room is for 10 or more guests and that they were "making a table up for us" in the main dining area. My husband told the lady that was not acceptable as he had called two weeks ago to reserve the room and even called today to confirm and was advised by a gentleman everything was good to go, no one mentioned the guest limit. He asked to speak to the manager. We waited another 10 minutes. Meanwhile, the other party was led into the small party room, and we were left to stand there. Finally, the manager/owner arrived to speak with us. She didn't apologize at first. She advised us that the room is for 15 or more. My husband explained that he spoke to a gentleman twice and was never told about the guest limit. She said "yea, he should not be answering phones he doesn't know anything." We asked if we could be seated in the other party room and she said "no, it's full of Christmas stuff." We immediately left and went to Olive Garden and had a good dinner. Yes, the food is good at Pompeii, but the customer service is not. The food is very expensive. Save your money and go someplace where they appreciate and value their customers. NOTE: On Pompeii's own website, it says there is a small room fee of $54.13 and 40 people max, it does not say anything about a MINIMUM guest count, this needs to be updated, is it 10 or 15? Also, there is a note about the party package menu requiring a minimum of 30 guests, again another inconsistency.

Bring on the cheesssseeeeeee!

By mrmac44 |

We visited this establishment the day after our return from a five day stay in Las Vegas. We were worn out and didn't want to cook. We have been here before, several times. We had the chicken Marsala, and the grilled chicken. Both were very good, and the garlic dressing for the pasta was delicious. The service was good and very attentive. The only bad issue is the metal chairs on the slippery tile floors. For folks with walking and balance issues, the combination of the chairs and floors makes sitting and standing at the table difficult and, at times, scary. Otherwise, this is a very good choice for lunch and dinner.

Love that Garlic!

By Jodelkraut |

Nothing better than an Italian restaurant that uses lots of fresh garlic. Pizza’s are really good but so are many of the seafood and meat dishes. Very nice atmosphere but a bit out of the way for us and still worth the visit.

Disappointing

By BarbaraK123 |

My daughter and I went for lunch the other day. We had not been there for quite a few months and were looking forward to it. Here's my disappointment....not in the food, the meal was fabulous as always and we could not fault the service, very attentive. However, previously when we went to lunch, a salad was always included with the entree. Now, this is not the case and it may be a small thing, but really, lettuce does not cost that much! I was very disappointed and this will have some bearing on if I return again or not. Right now, I'm leaning towards NOT! Also, the lunch prices on the entrees now equals the dinner prices at similar restaurants. A word....I did not notice the crowd at lunch that I previously noted.....could it be the bad decision to not include the salad with lunch or maybe the rise in price? Food for thought....

Excellent Food and Atmosphere

By Carolyn J |

The food was excellent. Really enjoyed it. Hard to find really good Italian food around here, at least that is what my husband says. He is from Brooklyn, so he rates them strongly against some of the best from New York.

Family Dinner

By MyTravel3 |

My family flew into San Antonio for a conference and used this app to find a good place to eat. Their service was friendly and helpful. The atmosphere was a bit loud. So if you are looking for quite this in not the place. The menu had a good variety. Food was good and the portion sizes were enough for 2 meals. Everyone brought leftovers back to our rental. If I'm in the mood for Italian food again while here I'll definitely go back.

Lunch

conveniently located for us in northeast san antonio; late lunchtime visit; servilce was excellent, meal was served quickly and was hot and tasty, excellent sauce; we took leftover and waiter provided another loaf of their wonderful bread!

Perfecto Italian in San Antonio!

By The Cycling Foodie |

Having lived in Italy for 3 years my standards are pretty high. Pompeii was wonderful. Whiles it's not 100% authentic it is pretty close! The Italian weddind soup for 5.99 was huge. I could have had that alone if I had eaten some of the fresh bread on the table. I got the grilled chicken and my husband got the "Indecisive" which was great as well. For the two of use our total with tip was $47. There were many families with kids and people casually dress and business attire.

Loved it!

By TXsandals |

What a charming place! Lovely décor, live harp music (yes!), and enormous servings of delicious food. We discovered this place just by googling nearby restaurants, and I'm so glad we did! My cousin said their lasagna was the best she's ever had. My carbonara was quite good as well. My daughter's macaroni and cheese was yummy as well (gourmet, not the kind from a box). Dress was casual, service was very friendly. I would definitely recommend it. It was a very pleasant experience.

Owner Massood very unprofessional and rude to his servers

By FOODCRITICSanAntonio |

I recently visited this restaurant and as I was waiting on a take out order a man by the name of Massood or something like that was in the front on the phone and as he hung up the phone he shouted : Son of a (--) and i think as a business man he is very unprofessional and also very rude to his employees it is amazing how much these poor servers have to take with the job market being so bad. He needs a lesson in courtesy....seriously!!

Group Track Team

By Kenya D |

Our track & field team was in town for out District Track Meet and we need a place to get pasta for the children. They easily fix all 28 of us in one room. The price was a little much, but the food was really good. We really enjoyed it. Thanks from the Central Texas Road Runners.

Extremely expensive unhappy experience

By Tourist08016527593 |

I’m n Monday Oct 30th my husband and I ordered takeout, Spaghetti with meatballs and bread. This is the worst Italian place to visit absolutely horrible when we got home we were so disappointed $71 for two plates of spaghetti that taste like tomato sauce that was poured from a can no condiments plain spaghetti with tomato sauce from a can, My pet wouldn’t eat the meatball it was discusting, We will choose another Italian restaurant next time,

Delicious

The food is delicious. I especially liked the eggplant Parm. The atmosphere is charming and quiet, and the service was excellent. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Excellent and Authentic Food

By Michael E |

My wife and I visited here today, and we were highly impressed. The service by Kayvon was perfect. It is all too often that a wait person either is all over you all the time or never to be seen when you need them. Not true with Kayvon. His timing was impeccable, and his recommendations were spot-on. The food was delicious and bountiful. I had the delicious Italian Wedding Soup which was certainly made from scratch. My eggplant parmesan was equally superb. We will certainly return.

Great Atmosphere

By Helice |

We ate here in a large group for a wedding and the service was fantastic. The restaurant was very clean and up kept. The food was good, but was typical Italian food.

Excellent meal!

By Terese W |

My husband and I just had a fantastic lunch! The food and service was great! My husband had the shrimp and pasta and I had the chicken parmigiana and we both had a side salad. They brought us warm bread and dipping oil as soon as we sat down. Our waiter was very attentive and refilled our drinks before we needed to ask. Excellent experience and we will go again when we are visiting in the area again!

Exquisite food

By Lourdes I |

Delicious fish & pasta. The service was excellent, the waiters are all professionals and promptly tend to your table prior to asking for additional service.

Yes. It Is That Good.

By OmniEpicurean |

No volcanic food bombs to dodge here, just some very good italian dishes served downhill lava flow fast. Garlic olive oil with fresh basil chiffonade to dip your complimentary rustic fresh bread in is addictive. Small chicken breasts grilled to perfection and served with a lemon butter caper sauce that is sure to get your vent pipe smoking. If you haven;t had enough butter and oil yet, they will serve your choice of long pasta with butter and garlic as well. IF your arteries survice the meal you are sure to be able to keep the vampires away for at least a week. Caesar salad with fresh romaine and a very mild creamy dressing is an excellent way to begin. A last sip of good chianti is perfect way to clear the palate of any oleo residue and have dessert if you must. After a rich meal like that, a dessert menu is simply an informative delineation of sweet delectables to be admired then quickly set aside as the viscosity of your corpuscular freeway continues to rise and the 3 loaves of bread you just ate settle in your gut to form a rock of Gibraltar weightiness. If this place was closer to my house, I would probably already have succumbed to coronary thrombosis several dozen times. Yes. It is that good. I am hoping though, that my observation concerning the seemingly reduced size of the chicken breasts on this visit is a one off eruption of reverse Gulliverism. That would definitely be a lava ash covering termination of patronage event for me if it is now the norm.

Anniversary

By Joan C |

Went to restaurant for anniversary. Husband got sausage & peppers and I got chicken parmesan. Great service, meal was delicious. Wait staff was extremely helpful. Price was reasonable.

Glad we chose this restaurant.

This visit was for my birthday. Rosie, our waitress was friendly and efficient. The food was absolutely delicious. We enjoyed the Italian music which was just the right volume. I can't wait to go again.
