A Chicago Tradition

By stevezeinner |

Always love to visit Chicago and even more my visit to Portillo’s. No matter what I order it’s always delicious. Eat there multiple times each visit. Prices are great compared to other Chicago restaurants. A must visit, highly recommend.

Love Portillo's

By Maxine M |

I make sure to go to Portillo's every time I visit Chicago. I love the atmosphere and the great hotdogs and other sandwiches. A Chicago tradition!!

My favorite meal in Chicago

By Ric |

Was just coming here to check off “ate a Chicago style dog”. It was the most amazing hot dog I have ever had. My companion said she could never eat another kind of hot dog. That wasn’t all. We finished with the amazing chocolate cake shake. Just what it sounds like. A choco shake with a piece of chocolate cake blended in. Skip the fries though. They were ok.

I liked it!

By Iván González |

Delicious hot dog, sandwich and potatoes! The attention was good and they ask you about vaccine certificade. Would be perfect if the soft drink where refill

Best hot dogs ever

By sassyme70 |

We are in chicago for our anniversary and we had to have a Portillos hot dog. We've never been here before. The place is amazing there are so many picture taking opportunities there. The staff was great. They were very understanding that we had never been they before so they didn't rush us when we were looking at the massive menu and asking questions. That place was incredible. The Chicago dog was delicious. Get 2. I want to go back just for the Chicago dogs.

Awesome catering! Classic Chicago fare!

By Todd S |

We got Chicago Dogs and Italian Beef sandwiches, and it was fantastic! The peppers are amazing! And everything was delicious! They delivered to the McCormick center for us which was really nice. Thanks again!!!

A must do in Chicago

By NWPackerBacker |

This location was a little out of the way, but the food was a great way to capture the fun of Chicago. Had a couple of burgers, fries and shakes while here. Very busy place, but it wasn't a long wait at all getting your food. It seemed to be a style like the Whataburger of North with more variety. I'd probably find another location more in the heart of the city next time. You won't go wrong with the location.

A must for a trip to Chicago!

By NewtonDad |

Whenever I visit Chicago, I like to go to Portillo’s. The food is great and the staff is amazing-friendly and helpful! I’m always amazed at the way the locations are run - tables are constantly being cleaned, service is efficient, food is great. This was the first time at this location and it didn’t disappoint!

Less than expected

By vtx1300blue |

With an armed security guard doing his best to look very stern we alll thought there must be something of significant value on the menu. Alas, when we opened our paper bags to unwrap our "dogs" we were all disappointed. The peppers were spicy and the fixings were good ... actually the hotdogs was fine but nothing super special. Not sure any of us ever found the bun as they seemed to be crushed down to negligible status. The French fries one of my colleagues purchased were abysmal. At least having only parted with $3 we were good for round 2 of dinner in a more carefully researched establishment. In defense of Portillo's our crowd of 7 represented 5 countries and some with a limited appreciation of hotdogs. We travel a lot and prefer quality over quantity. One positive note - Milkshakes were very good!!

A classic Chicago dog!!

By Mrs Travelous |

We loved this place! Simple and delicious and very American! If I am not mistaken Portillos was on the Chicago food planet tour. A Chicago-style hot dog, Chicago Dog, or Chicago Red Hot is an all-beef frankfurter on a poppy seed bun, originating from the city of Chicago, Illinois. The hot dog is topped with yellow mustard, chopped white onions, bright green sweet pickle relish, a dill pickle spear, tomato slices or wedges, pickled sport peppers and a dash of celery salt. I would go to have a dog here any day!

Experience plus yummy food

By JustGo |

Dropped in with the family and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Great atmosphere, staff keeps it lively by yelling out when your order is up. Fun menu with all the toppings - and really good shakes/malts. Try the Italian Beef Sandwich and onion rings. Not a very long wait to order, food came fast and order was correct.

Good Service / Kept Nice

By Steve D |

These are not fine dining establishments and you are in the middle of Chicago for this one. The plus for this one is the parking when you are in the downtown vicinity and the service is pretty good. I have been to others which are a lot slower. There are many options for good food here.

Love Portillo’s

By kimkaydee |

I actually love the Beef sandwich! My daughter and husband love the hotdogs. Fries are good. You can’t visit Chicago and not visit Portillo’s!

Hard to beat!

By Errek J |

My family and I made a point to eat here while staying overnight in the city. Traffic was crazy slow and backed up on the highway and I was worried about parking. When I arrived I saw my worries were unfounded. The parking lot was more than sufficient. When we went inside my wife and daughters went to restroom. While waiting on them a bus unloaded. Again, my first thought was negative thinking we would have a long wait. Again, I was wrong. Ordering was quick and smooth. The food pick-up is a different part of the dining room, but that was quite efficient as well. As to the food quality and taste, it was all great. We had chili dogs, hot dogs, polish sausage and a beef and cheddar croissant. Finally, my wife had read a review that mentioned unfriendly and/or rude service. That was not our experience at all. Everyone we encountered was friendly and helpful. Definitely recommend this establishment.

Fast lunch

By Kelly Cathcart |

Portillo's is a Chicago hot dog legend. They have great dogs. You must try the cake at least once, amazing! The cheddar beef croissant it killer. This place has the lunchtime drive thru down! Don't let the long line stop you from sopping. I always get thru fast and my meal is correct, hot, and fresh. They also have indoor seating and a parking lot.

A broiled chicken nudie (no bun) and a hotdog ketchup only 14 MINUTES TO FULFILL THE ORDER!

By Pollywannacracker |

The staff isn't cheery and upbeat like the suburban locations I have been to. You'd think being in Chicago and being a staple of the area this would be one of the more lovely and "fun" locations. Over $15 for a literal PIECE of grilled chicken a hot dog and to drinks!! Cashier didn't know where the buttons were and seemed like she hated her job, complaining about their hours and how late she had to work.... Well quit then. Walked over to pickup area, waited, waited, waited, waited some more, finally the guy asked my number 142!!! They were already on 165!!! So after 14 mins of waiting we finally got our food, the guy gave us 2 fries for free since we waited so long. I simply asked where my drinks were and was told to go back in line to purchase them.... So I showed my receipt with my two drinks and got the eyes rolling from the girl, wtf?!? I just paid 15 $ for my food, hope you don't make anywhere near that amount to stand there and be miserable and go slow as a turtle at your job finally find a small table, knocking lettuce and food onto the floor, it was so dirty, I asked a girl to clean it off, she stood there and stared at me, she made a comment...we closing in ten minutes!! It was 11:45pm... You close at 1am!!! So I went and got napkins and wiped off my table!! Sit down, my temper steaming, take a deep breath, give my friend her hot dog, annnnd my Broiled chicken was no joke, FREEZING COLD!!!! So back up to the pickup counter I go, ask for a manager, hear them say, "what they need I'm busy" he was scraping cheese or of one container to another. So another 4 minutes I wait. He comes over and I said, "please feel this chicken" he refuses and says I believe you...I asked him believe what... He looks dumbfounded. So I told him it was freezing cold and that I waited for 14 minutes, that my friend is now probably done with her food and I cannot eat a cold piece of chicken. So they remake the chicken. If I wanted a sandwich I would have ordered that, so I received my broiled chicken with the bread AFTER telling TWO managers it was a broiled chicken nudie!!! Guess they don't know their menu! He then preceded to ask if I was allergic to bread...(which I am because your buns have corn starch on them and I'm allergic to corn) I said, it was a nudie... He goes yeah but are you allergic to bread should I remake the chicken again since I put it on a bun....I just took the darn bread and ended up throwing it away. I risked my allergy because of these incompetent idiots. I tried to stomach the fries --their fries are hands down my fave more than anywhere!!! They were so gross I ate two!! I think maybe the oil was old or they were just sitting there for a while or something. Finished my hot chicken and we left. I would never patronize this location again even if m my life depended on it. What would have cost me less than $10 in the suburbs, costed me more than $15. Granted I was given a gift card for 1 free sandwich next time, I still would not go back to that location!! Get with the picture learn something from your suburban locations!!!

Loved it

By Jennifer F |

This was one of the best places I ate while visiting Chicago. Loved the atmosphere and all of their food was great. I would definitely visit again.

Worst portillo I have ever been!

By duckwade |

Worst portillo I have ever been! Slow service, missed item, long queue for drive in. And I guess they were trying to get paid by towing people's cars. I have been to more than 5 portillo's within greater Chicago area, and this one is definitely the worst I have ever been, won't go back for sure.

A must try

By devinh513 |

The Italian beef and cake shake were worth the trip alone, absolutely fantastic, but the hot dogs were also good. Everything was reasonably prices, good portions, etc.

Sub-standard

By MaryLou Carter |

Don't waste your time or meal choice on this so-called restaurant. Food quality is poor. So-called hotdogs appeared to be boiled not grilled. Bun was soggy, and fries tasted like grocery store frozen variety.

Guilty Pleasure

By BeachLover1997 |

We went while visiting family in Chicago. My teenager loves this place. We don’t go for the healthy food. Happy they were able to accommodate a peanut allergy. First time we used the drive-thru, the line was long. However, it went quickly. Friendly attendants.

Great Portillos

By Chicag0pinion |

Been to many Portillos in and around Chicago, and this one is the best!!! Very organized, with quick, accommodating, courteous service. They even have an employee walking around cleaning tables down after diners leave. They also have a huge parking lot in front of the building. The chopped salad and cheese dogs are faves.

Popular with the locals

By ChoosingToBeHappy |

Asking around I had like 5 locals tell me this place is great. From what I understand this is a newer location. Regardless, the locals love it here and so did I. Great way to try the classic Chicago Dog. Would highly recommend :)

Great interior, great Chicago dog

By KasienkaNW |

A Chicago Dog was recommended to me. Tried it and I wasn’t disappointed in flavours. Size wise - they are quite small. Should have had two of them. Had to order a dessert to fill the hole. Good atmosphere in the place, great interior, very good value for money.

Great experience

By Mark V |

Visited Portillo's with my wife and daughter. We picked this location because it offered free parking. The decor is very cool inside and there were plenty of places to sit. The food was great, my daughter had a Chicago hot dog and loved it, my wife had a berry salad and she loved it, and I went with the big beef Italian sandwich dipped. My sandwich was very good, the beef was tender and tasty. We would certainly visit again. The only downside was the wait to order and wait to pick up the food, but they do handle a lot of visitors.

Delicious hot dog

By 豆漿 |

The hot dog with poppy seed bun is delicious. However, the crowd people really drove the clerks crazy. The clerk in pick up area surrounded by the crowd kept calling the order but nobody showed up. Fortunately, I got my hot dog fastly. Everything was great except for the ordering problem. I almost forgot to put my meal bag in the bucket on my left side after paying.

Always nice

By Moreno_chicago |

Real Chicago tradition! I love their Italian beef as well as the rest of the menu! Fast service family place

Beef's all around

By Donald B |

Lunch hour brings us to this location, and once again we were highly pleased with our combo sandwiches. I am glad that the company decided to put a location in the downtown area. Right on point.

Worst Service at Any Portillo's Ever

By DGMun |

This Portillo's has been open since late May. It is now mid-October. They have had plenty of time to work out any grand opening issues. We are huge fans of Portillo's. Go to many of their locations. We come to this particular Portillo's about once a week. So we are giving them plenty of chances for redemption. Following is for our last visit but it represents most of our visits. How they manage the queues for ordering is terrible. The people they have writing the orders on bags before the cashiers cause more problems. They are not expediting the process at all. Once orders are placed, the orders are often lost. How does that happen? At other times simple orders, I am talking an order of one hot dog, an Italian sausage and a beef sandwich took 25 minutes to get. Orders are also wrong frequently. This should not happen. Salads take way too long. People standing around, why aren't they helping get the salad orders out? With all of the years of experience at Portillo's, how is this still allowed months after opening? I will say, that the quality of the food that is finally delivered is excellent. Great food. That is why we have not completely stopped going here. But so frustrating just getting the food. Management needs to step up. And one last complaint, getting an Italian sausage on a hot dog bun instead of the roll is an up-charge!! Why!!?? Seriously, this seems ridiculous.

Drive thru issues

By Xavier99 |

After 5 bad drive thru experiences and a terrible curbside experience I'm finally writing a review. I always go to the Taylor & Canal location for ease, but WOW they need to get their order taking and fulfillment corrected. The food is good and that's why I always say, just one more time, but enough is enough. Every time I have gone to this location, either my order was lost (and in some cases 45 minutes lost) or packaged with wrong items. Today for example, part of my order was for a cheeseburger with everything and instead I got a plain single and a plain double. I ordered chili and it was wrong. I want to like this place again, but they consistently make it difficult. I've called in the past and it didn't make any difference. I'm a mom on the go between kids activities and just don't need the hassle. I'm just done!!

Great Food, Not the Best Service

By Alex Stoupa |

The food was phenomenal, definitely worth it for how little you pay. The staff however, was just short of this. The staff completely lost my ticket and the lady at the counter was very snobby to help re-make my order. The chefs in the back threw it all together with no care.

Wait times

By Ahsan Q |

There is no denying that Portillo’s hot dogs are the best in town. However, service vary from location to location. I’ve had multiple instances to wait both in-line and outside in drive thru. You really have to wait for your food especially during peak hours. The manager one time due to all the delays refund me for my food and added dessert on top if it. I am grateful but I sincerely hope they solve the wait time issue. I have given it a 3 out 5 for service not food

Everyone said this is a “must

By kdpbball |

Everyone said this is a “must visit” when in Chicago. When we walked in, my first impression was of pure chaos: two long lines, lots of people, then read the various menu boards, order, then wait in line for your number to be called. Amazingly, the system works. We had two jumbo Chicago-style hot dogs with all the fixings: all beef jumbo dog on a soft poppy seed bun. These were excellent. Spouse ordered onion rings, excellent! We shared a large chocolate cake shake and a slice of their chocolate cake, excellent. We ordered two chopped salads to bring back to our hotel for the next night’s dinner. The salads were excellent: plentiful greens, veggies, cheese, chicken, ditalini pasta, house Italian on the side. My first impression was changed after watching the whole process. It was an enjoyable meal. You won’t be sorry.

Yum

By yenved |

Be prepared to need a lot of napkins. I don’t recommend the beef sandwich. Wet sandwich with dry beef. I barely ate any of it. Onions rings were great! Meatball was to die for. Don’t skip the meatball. Chili dog was good.

I love this place

By DaveofBlueRidge |

May not be as good as the independent local Italian beef or hot dog stands around town, but a great runner up. We had the beef and sausage with guardinaro, Italian beef and the Chicago dog. All were excellent. Down side is long lines and a little wait time at lunch and not as personal as the local independents. But a great choice and very reasonable prices. Worth a visit.

Fun Chicago vibe

By Rebecca B |

When we visit Chicago, this restaurant is a must & at the top of our list! We love their Chicago dogs & Italian beef sandwiches. And don't miss out on their amazing cake shakes! The lines always seem long, but they move quickly

Layover at Union Station Turned Into Hotdog Sensation

By Jon L |

Wish I would have taken a pic of the Portillo's beef hotdog so you could see how good this Chicago style hotdog was. Porttillo's is on Taylor Street which is about a 20 minute walk from Union Station. The service is quick and menu is large featuring hotdogs, burgers, ribs and salads. The dessert menu featured their famous chocolate cake with mayonnaise as the secret ingredient. While we didn't try it, it looked very good. We did however opt for the strawberry shortcake. Large portion and chilled went great with a cup of coffee. The prices are reasonable and a great value for the quality of food. Do your taste buds a favor and go to Porttillos!

Horrible Service Issues - Go To The One On Ontario

By chgocutie |

My partner and I stopped in this location recently to grab some quick early evening food. We had high hopes, but those hopes were quickly dashed. For starters, be prepared to wait. And wait. And wait. Which may not be a bad thing, one would think. However, the people inside are too busy having personal conversations and not focusing on delivering hot food. Hence, why you will wait. When we were there, we waited over 20 minutes for our food. I even walked up to the pick up window to watch a young lady drop my food into a bag (the bags are numbered with the corresponding order number from your receipt), and have a 3 minute long conversation over who-knows-what. I didn't appreciate it and asked for a manager. The manager on duty comes up and gives one of the sorriest, most insincere apologies I've heard. After I told her that I didn't appreciate what I just saw, she offered to remake the food (I should've taken her up on her offer, keep reading). I didn't want to wait another 20 minutes or have my partner endure ANOTHER 20 minute wait, so we took the food and left. We get all the way home and guess what? Part of the order is wrong. Wrong to the point whereas I can't eat it. Rather than go back down there (it was nearly closing time), I called, hoping to get another manager. Got the same manager. With the same sorry, insincere apology. Ultimately, she did promise to refund me for the wrong order, but with all of this - absolutely no way I'll be going back.

Wayyyyyyy more than a Hot Dog!!!

By Team McLemore |

OMG!!! Best .Hot Dog. EVER... Definitely not what we were expecting, much more than a tourist spot, they definitely have earned all the accolades they get!!!

Awesome

By jscot3 |

Simply amazing and words are insufficient. The hot dogs are some of the absolute best you will ever have. Highly recommended.

Great Food!

By Kelli |

Everyone we knew from the Chicagoland area told us we had to go to Portillo's, so we went and we were not disappointed. We got a few things to split so we could have a taste of several "must haves" and we still ended up completely stuffed. We didn't have room for shakes or cake (much to the dismay of my Chicagoan friends). We did try the standard Chicago hot dog - very tasty! I am not a pickle lover, so I took one bite with the pickle (because when in Chicago...) but ate the other bites without and I really enjoyed it. We also tried the beef & cheddar sandwich and fries - both were excellent as well. I'll have to try more on my next visit!

How soon can you build one in Kansas City?

By Charles M |

I'm in love. Hot dog was out of this world, the shake literally changed me at my core. Kids loved it and I'll be shipping Portillos to my house until the first one arrives in KC.

Second time, just as good!

By www.DinedThereSippedThat.com |

This was my second time in a Portillos in the Chicago area. Just as awesome as the first time. Friendly service, clean location, delicious Italian sausage sandwich! Will definitely be back to a Portillos my next time in Chicago

Italien Beef

By David89r |

When visiting the US one stop at portillos is always a to-do. My favorite is the Italien Beef. As delicious as simple!

Decent food for the price

By Robert M |

I've been to several of the Portillo locations and they are always a reliable meal. They are much more beloved that I would expect. I enjoy the food, but it's never a destination choice of my own. You go to order and they take it pretty quickly. Then you wait for someone to mutter your number and pick up your food. This time, I got the beef & sausage sub with poorly de-seeded peppers. I'm not sure any cook intended it that way, but hey - it's what I got. It was so greasy that the bun wimpered, wilted and desolved before I could eat it - but it did taste mighty good. The onion rings were about ok. Again, I liked the taste but they lacked quality. Overall, a decent meal at a decent place.

Chocolate Cake Shake

By TravelerG8 |

Had to get our chocolate cake shake fix on a quick visit to Chicago. Know your in a good place when you see local local enforcement there for dinner. Busy during dinner rush but line moves quickly.

Get the chocate cake shake!

By Brit527 |

The first thing that was suggested to us when we got into Chicago was a chocolate cake shake from Portillo's. It didn't disappoint, it was amazing! The shake idea is brilliant! We were upset that we only made it there once, but now we know for next time!

Chicago hot dog

By likeeat |

Everyone said that if you want the best hot dog in Chicago, you have to go to Portillo’s. They were right. The dog had a great crunch and the toppings were perfect.

Gimme More

By egwanderlust |

Portillo's - my ultimate guilty pleasure. After a long day of flight delays, I wanted a couple of their delicious Chicago Dogs. We were not disappointed and were left stuffed after splurging on some of their Cake Shakes and fries with cheese sauce. So far, everything we have had from Portillo's has been five stars. Can't wait to get back there.

Love this place

By Alfio G |

A good find atmosphere is good family friendly. You can customize your own sandwich or pick from the board. Sells only beer and wine and many soft drinks. You can always find a good meal, starting to franchise keep an eye out, will go back again.

Dogs Chicago style

By M P |

OMG what the heck! The veggie dog rocked best chicken fingers ever. The drive thru was 20 deep and the service is crazy fast! This place is off the hook.

One of those "you've got to stop here" places in Chicago!

By David C |

I walked from my Airbnb, it was an easy jaunt. I wasn't sure what to expect but walking in it was loud, busy but easy to navigate where you needed to go for what! I ordered a jumbo loaded dog with cheese fries and a diet coke - and I can honestly say I've never had a better hot dog, it was juice, full of flavour, pretty difficult to eat being loaded and all but worth it, so much so I went back and ordered a second. I will make sure to stop in again when I'm back in the city.

Decent fast food but weak service

By Norris A |

It's often been a go-to spot after a movie nearby and we've ordered online "to save time" but when I get there and get in line at the online order pick-up there is usually only one girl working and the food isn't ready to go-they cook the fries when you get there I believe. Sandwiches are in the oven keeping warm or have been forgotten (LOL!) The girl goes to put that order in then comes back to deal with the Doordash or Ritual drivers who are picking up and the line behind me grows longer. Longest wait so far has been 20 minutes-for food ordered in advance! (They also may have to stop to pour someone a beer.) Check what you are given before you leave. I learned that the hard way and got home to discover my chocolate cake (which is yummy) was not in the bag. Too far to go back so they took it off the bill and away from my stomach when I was craving it. The Italian beef, lightly-dipped au jus with hot peppers is a good sandwich. The Maxwell St Polish sausage also very worthy. The fries are generic crinkle cuts you can buy in the Supermarket and are pale but not greasy. The onion rings have a very crunchy Panko batter but lack onion: where does it go? Was it ever there? Pass. This past visit, with no movie theater to go to because of Covid-19 we were in the area and rather than order on line with all the hassles I've had, I saw that the drive thru wasn't busy-maybe 3 cars ahead of me in the early afternoon, so I went that route. I gave my order to a staff member at the entrance to the drive thru and used a Credit Card to pay there and then. The staff member was wearing mask and gloves which was reassuring. When I got up to the window I only had to wait about 2 minutes and a team member passed the food to me. All the items were accounted for. There was a warm smile and a Thank You which I'm not used to at this location. It's a once in a while craving for the sandwich, sausage and the chocolate cake. There have been times when I have said "never again" but I keep going back.

Nothing special about this place

By 193029 |

We had to wait there for an hour for a cold hot dog, wouldn’t recommend it! Go somewhere else!!!!!!!!

Love this place, can’t stop going when I’m in town

By BluejayOne |

I can’t stop going to Portillo’s EVERY time I am in Chicago, or if I see one in my travels elsewhere. The Italian Beef & Sausage sandwich is quite possibly the best sandwich in the world! I order mine with Extra Gravy and sweet peppers. Absolutely amazing! Today’s visit bolstered my view that this is the best sandwich, bar none (even better than a Philly in Philly)!

Fun Family Food Experience

By GoalieDad26 |

Another fun eatery. When you order your hotdogs, DO NOT ask for ketsup!!! That is a local no-no!! You should instead ask to have your dog "dragged through the garden"... which means you want it loaded with everything. Get a milk shake too. Enjoyable.

An amazing experience!

By djfluth |

A must-do in Chicago! Ordered the Chicago hot dog, chocolate cake, and a big chocolate malt. While waiting for my food, noticed that the background music was rhythm and blues. Many of the people eating there seemed like locals, and as the music was playing, I watched those locals dance along with the music! The Chicago hot dog was almost a religious experience! Amazing food. Fun, cultural experience.

Mmmmmmmmm

By mrk4th |

I always feel that Portillo’s Italian beef is a little greasy, but its dogs are good and its fries are crispy. The place is a well-oiled machine. Even during the lunch rush, your meal will be quick and hot. Parking can be a bit of an adventure, but patience pays.

A Chicago Style Dog Must Stop

By Boydster713 |

As a Texan used to hot dogs loaded with chili, I was excited to finally try an authentic Chicago-style dog, and Portillo's did not disappoint. Recommended by the staff at our hotel, this place lived up to the hype. The Chicago dog was perfectly prepared; topped with the classic combination of mustard, relish, onions, tomatoes, and the all-important sport peppers, nestled in a soft, fresh poppy seed bun. It was a taste of Chicago that I had been craving! As for the fries, they were crispy and golden, hot out of the fryer (just the way I like them) The service was fast, making it easy to enjoy the meal without a long wait. If you’re in Chicago and craving a taste of the windy city, start with Portillo's.

YUMMY!!!

By Rebecca B |

A favorite Chicago restaurant! Every time we visit the city, this is the first restaurant our daughter forces us to go to. 🙂 Their Chicago dogs are as good as the street vendors, but whose is? It's still pretty darn good. Hubby loves the Italian sandwich and my go-to is cheese fries and the cake shake. So so good

Good food

By Justin Towne |

Good food but like anything making it a chain has ruined a lot of the old Portillo’s taste and made it seem more..impersonal. Staff is friendly to a point but have a tendency to get into side conversations while you are waiting on them to serve you. Their Chicago got dog still good, but not like it used to be or how I remember it. Their grilled polish is just ok and their Italian beef has lost its taste - sucks as these used to be the places to go

best Chicago hot dog

By Susan M |

I had 3 Chicago hot dogs at 3 different places in one week. This was by far the best one. The meat quality was better, even though each placed claimed it was the same. There was a long line, but moved quickly. But once ordered was placed, took about 30 minutes to get order. Staff working hard. Don’t know if not enough staff or just very busy due to being a holiday weekend. Also, side condiments , empty in a few places- not kept up with demand. Liked the atmosphere, but a bit noisy. Would return there, when I want the best Chicago hot dog.

Awesome hot dogs!

By Oliver1313 |

Very busy. Quick service and nice folks. Awesome chili cheese dog and Chicago dog. I can't wait to go back.

Visit for the food, DEFINITELY not the service...

By jmriveranm |

First time visit to Chicago and Portillo’s. Walking up to the building, we were having high hopes since the drive-thru was packed to the street and the parking lot full. When we walked in the smell of food was pleasant and appetizing - but that pleasantness quickly changed. Once we figured out where to place our order, we were greeted with service that has been par for the course throughout Chicago - insincere and annoyed that we are visiting. We placed our orders and the young woman taking our order was snarky and barely answered our questions over her eye rolls. We paid and we’re given a receipt and told our order number. No guidance as to where we get our food or if we should seat ourselves... As we waited for our order, I went to the dessert and beer bar to read the selections available. Threes desserts and six beers was all they had for options. I stood in another line - which is also the carry out line - and waited to order and pay for my beer. The person who took my order and my payment called over the microphone for a manager to come pour my beer... I waited for a few minutes and finally received my beer in a glass goblet that was a bad pour - lots of head... I asked the manager if they had water cups available and she retreated around the corner and returned with a couple of styrofoam cups the were pre filled with ice and water. Back to the table I went and we began our wait... and waited and waited and waited... finally we heard a number that sounded like ours and I quickly ran to the counter to learn I was wrong... back to the table to wait.. meanwhile, we had also ordered a salad and saw someone coming from a different line with a salad and decided to investigate. Sure enough, our Cesar salad was waiting - minus the croutons. So we asked about the missing croutons and were told “there’s no croutons in the building”. I asked for a manager and the manager appeared with a large box of croutons from the back... So back to the table to wait for the rest of our food... and waited and waited and waited.. finally I thought I better check since maybe we missed them call out our number. I got to the counter and no one was available to ask. But suddenly a woman appeared with 2 bags and called out my number. She then grabbed a pre-made large chocolate cake shake from under a counter and told me my order was all there... I retreated to the table for my waiting family... We began to distribute the order and found the “side of gravy” to be missing... back to the counter to ask the same woman for the missing gravy and she slowly fulfilled my request - eye roll included... Back To the table once again... We dug into our food and all was better. Jumbo hot dog with everything, Italian beef with hot peppers, fries, chicken tenders, Cesar salad, grilled Italian sausage and chocolate cake shake. The jumbo hot dog was awesome. Italian beef was just okay at best. Fries were typical - nothing special. Chicken tenders were good. Cesar salad was good. Grilled Italian sausage was flavorful but dry. The bun it was in was excellent. Chocolate cake shake was amazing even though it was not freshly made. I also grabbed a strawberry short cake from the dessert counter and it was pretty good. Overall - I feel like Portillo’s is overrated and over hyped... if I were a native Chicago person, I’d certainly not recommend Portillo’s... I’d tell visitors to go to Devil Dawg’s or Luke’s... But I have yet to visit Al’s...

Everything I was looking for

Quick, cheap, delicious. Everything I was looking for at lunchtime on this cold Sunday. Service was quick. Restaurant was clean.

Good combo sandwich

I'm an Italian beef/combo fan and have tried many places in Chicago, but had never been to a Portillo's. I was in the South Loop and saw this one at lunchtime and decided to give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised with the combo I ordered. Tasty beef and very good sausage with a nice gravy. The small fries and soft drink sizes are enough for one person. Service is a bit chaotic, but not a real problem. I have added Portillo's to my list of places to get a good Italian beef sandwich.

Totally expendable

They serve the typical hotdogs of the city of Chicago but the place is an absolute case, many people, little staff, a person goes indicating the number of your order without any order. And hotdogs for me nothing otherworldly, totally expendable

A great place for a Chicago Dog

Got a Chicago dog, veggie dog, fries, cheese sauce, and the chocolate cake shake. We ordered at the kiosk—fast & easy. The food was prepared in a reasonable amount of time despite the fact that they were busy. The staff worked hard to keep the tables cleaned as they were vacated and the bathrooms were tidy and well stocked. Loved the dogs (the veggie was surprisingly delicious), hot tender crinkle fries, gooey salty cheese sauce, & the chocolate cake shake.

Great experience

Having heard from this restaurant on tripadvisor, we gave it a try. I must say it was pretty good, nothing really special about the food ( everything we had was good but not out of the ordinary) but the whole retro concept and deco is worth the trip. Had to wait a long time for milkshake while food was served making it cold when we finally received the milkshake... as it was a busy time, i can understand but an attention should be given to that aspect. Definitely worth the detour, glad we tried.
