A highlight of our trip - a definite "do over"

By NORA K |

Was in San Deigo for a week taking in the beer scene. We used local transit to get from San Diego to La Jolla. Once there we walked around to several Brew Pubs. What started out as a "grab a beer", turned into 4 hours, lunch and almost way to many beers! The selection is outstanding and has LOTS OF BELGIANS. We plan to come back in Oct 2012.

Hard to beat for food & atmosphere

San Diego is known for its craft beers. This restaurant offers hundreds of beers from around the world, plus local beers, plus their special offerings. My husband and I go there often for the "Santana Burger" with fries. The burger has the right amount of heat to make it memorable. Pair that with one of their many fine beers, a friendly atmosphere in one of the world's most beautiful cities, and you have an unbeatable combination. The owners also have a branch in Encinitas, but we like this one best.

Wow....13 page beer list and great burgers!

Went to public house after askign a local for a recomendation for a good burger. We were impressed. Great burgers...especially loved the Santana, Bootlegger and Bison burgers. If you are a sweet potatoe fry lover, there have some especially good ones. The beer selection was one of the best I have ever seen. The selection was great from both the US craft market and internationally. It would take a month to get through their beer list. The service was prompt and our waiter especially knowledgable about the menu and beer list. We will be back.

Return trip being planned!

Despite the unseasonably cold weather, we sat outdoors at the bar. The indoor seating is absent any atmosphere but outdoors is really nice. I loved the banter between bartenders and customers. We stumbled onto "Allagash Tap Takeover" and enjoyed a few unique Maine brews followed some local San Diego brews. Great selection, good use of appropriate beer glassware and tasting notes. I had the burger special that night - kangaroo meat. My spouse had a regular burger. Both were HUGE and lived up to the claim of "locally world famous". Looking forward to the next SD trip to hang out here.

We love this place!

I probably shouldn't review it because we don't want it to be mobbed with tourists! Fantastic burgers. Great beer selection. Relaxed atmosphere. Outdoor seating year round (with heat lamps). We go for the 2 for 1 burgers on Tuesdays.

This place rocks! Great bar food, and beer selection!

This casual pub looks like it was converted from a house. The laid back atmosphere and outdoor seating make this a good place to stay for a few hours, especially if there is a good game on TV. They have a great selection of Belgian and craft beers. You can do a flight of four 5 oz. tap beer tasters to see what you like. If you don't like what they have on tap (and they have a lot on tap) they have a book several pages long of beers that they carry in bottles. Our server was very knowledgeable about the beers and made some suggestions based on what we like. We had heard about the beers, but were pleasantly surprised by the food. We tried the beer-battered onion rings, fish tacos, and the pear, bleu cheese & pecan salad, and all were excellent. I'm not usually a salad guy, but the pear salad was awesome! If your in the area and like beer, this is your place!

Great beer list, great burgers

Had the chance over the summer to have a meal at the Public House. Found the prices very reasonable and the food to be really great. Probably the best burger I've ever eaten. It was so good I had to ask where they got their meat and was told they have a supplier of organically raised beef nearby. The food was so good I honestly felt they aren't charging enough. Didn't mention that to them but was obviously totally happy with my meal. Huge selection of great Belgium beers on tap and in bottles. One place not to miss if your in or near La Hoya.

********** (10) Stars for the Beer

Not five stars-ten stars for the Beer. Some of the tastiest Beer ever! Seriously seriously great Beer, Sassy and occasionally disenchanted Waitresses.. and the food completely all over the place. Come for the Beer, stay for the Beer. Pub grub will surprise you either way if it's off or on but it's really all about the Pub. Beer flights make it fun to sample all the crazy Sours, Tripels, Stouts and fabulously interesting stuff they rotate. Sometimes the food kicks derrière and sometimes you remember why you came for the Beer..wine too. But try the Beer. Seriously.

Excellent Food and Service!

We recently visited the Public House after reading favorable reviews on Trip Advisor and finding that the Cottage (also top rated) was closed when we arrived around 3 pm for a late lunch. We were seated promptly at an outside high top bar table and the bartender (also doubling as a server in that area) was there right away to take our drink and food orders. We ordered the Bleu Wedge salad - which was probably one of the best we have had (and we order that almost every where we go - including high end steakhouses - which usually have that as an option). The bartender even had the kitchen split the salad after we mentioned we would be sharing that to start. I also had the Patty Melt which was was cooked to perfection - and the beef actually tasted non-frozen and like beef - though I thought the fried onions were a bit mushy for my liking. The house sauce is very interesting - so recommend that as an add-on and the onion rings were perfectly done, too. My husband had the cheesesteak sandwhich and was equally impressed with the preparation and the side of fries - which were crispy and tasty, too! The prices were reasonable and the service was great - - I highly recommend this place!

Great variety of beers, cute historic house, and gigantic burgers.

Out for an evening stroll in the village and discovered The Public House. Lots of people enjoying their meals, so we stopped and were not disappointed. Very casual dining and appears to be a local favorite. It was perfect for a Friday night burger and brew...or two. The young wait staff was helpful and friendly. There was plenty of outdoor and indoor seating. The place was filled with people and families of all ages.
