Everytime I order from her it's always good. I especially love the plantain chips. Food is damn good.

They have surprisingly good selections of stews. Oxtails is the must! Plantain is wonderful. Flan might be a bit pricy but definitely yummy. We were having take-outs and all the stuffs were very kind and helpful still. Wouldn't say that the empanadas are the best I've had but a pretty decent Puerto Rican food in the neighborhood.

I live a few minutes away from Puerto Viejo so I order once in a while when I want Spanish food. The food is always good. It depends on which app I use to order my food the delivery experience can be bad. If you go to the restaurant just know they take cash only.

I arrived in NYC mid afternoon from the Dominican Republic and was please to stumble into Puerto Viejo. Beautifully decorated, great energy and ambiance. I was greeted by the Owner Señor Eduardo and his two sons Eduardo and Franklin. They graciously explained the wines and offered me one of the best sangria I have ever had! Since I'm always hungry, I managed to eat 6 empanadas! They were all very tasty especially the cheese empanadas! Living in the Dominican I have access to numerous dominican restaurants but this one takes the cake! Thank you for such a lovely evening with an even lovelier family! If your in the neighborhood, stop in....you won't be disappointed!

To tell you the truth, one of the best empanadas that I have ever tasted. The beef empanadas are to die for.

My cousin and I went to Puerto Viejo for a Saturday lunch. The mofongo with chicken and vegetables was delicious. Although I felt that the price of my entrée should have given me a larger quantity of food, the food was outrageous. I felt like I was back in Puerto Rico. The staff at this restaurant was very friendly. This restaurant did include a restroom.

Dominican food at its finest. What a find! Service excellent. Ask for their advice. Food was delicious. Authentic! You will love the complimentary fried plantains to start. Mmmmmm excellent all around!

Puerto Viejo is a rare gem! It is everything a great neighborhood restaurant should be; delicious, affordable, perfect atmosphere for any occasion… date, dinner with the girls, dinner with the parents, etc. If you are seeking an authentic experience and delicious food, this is it!

This is by far my favorite restaurant in Brooklyn. My family is Puerto Rican so I grew up on amazing hispanic food and always have trouble finding anything as good when dining out, but this place is great! I recommend the pork dishes, mofongo, and churrasco but you really can't go wrong with anything. Only con is that it's cash only and 9 times out of 10 the atm inside doesn't work so you have to leave the restaurant to find an atm which is annoying. BUT amazing food and service.

Wandering through this part of Brooklyn, you will not find tony sidewalk cafes or fancy signs. Car repair shops with vehicles blocking the sidewalks is more the style, but it is safe and friendly and entertaining. Once you settle into this place, however, you might as well be in food central: wonderful service, excellent food, and a hyped crowd that just appeared out of nowhere around 7 PM, poof! We completely enjoyed our experience, the waitress was a pro, swapping out sides at request without batting an eye, the food produced plentifully and promptly with tasty seasoning and all well prepared. Price is reasonable. All in all a fun place and well worth a go. We plan to return!

Food is amazing especially the Ox tails yummy...but be aware they only take cash so you have to use their Atm so bring cash. Waiting staff are friendly as well.

Very good caribean food. Great service. This is a place we definitely will visit again. Lots of gluten free meals.

Visiting this place was bittersweet for me. Sweet because the food was good, in terms of flavor and the menu had a good selection of my dominican food. Bitter because everything was overpriced just because this place had the word “Bistro” in it. The decoration are great, it makes you feel like you are really in a puerto viejo, with old furniture and decorations. The service is nice I would say. I would visit again since is close to my house. Im a little glad Dominican food is getting more “fancier”.

Looking to activate your taste buds with Dominican food then Puerto Viejo is a venture to try out. Located on the corner of Grant and Dean Streets in Brooklyn this neighbourhood restaurant is hidden among the nearby apartments but is easily accessed. We went with friends who lived nearby on Dean and were surprised to see a restaurant situated on a non-arterial route. Upon entering the place was packed - always a good sign - we ordered the postelon de carne at about $12 per plate and really did not know what to expect - it was delicious - contained sweet plantain - so good. This place gets high marks for the food and the atmosphere was truly unique. I highly recommend this restaurant for a taste of Dominican food.

Try to go during happy hour if you can because sangrias are at a discount and they have $1 empanadas which are really good. I ordered the grilled salmon with black beans and rice and was pleasantly surprised. I've never had Dominican food before and I found this restaurant to be really good. I love the convenience of it being located in Bk because I don't always want to deal with the headache of going to the city. The spot only accepts cash so keep that in mind.

There's a dish there involving ground beef, plantains, and cheese. It's a simple idea, but the flavors were unique since I'm an American. Great restaurant.

This was a great dinner find. My favorite dish of the ones we sampled were the tostones rellenos- I could eat a plate of those and still want more. The beef stew and mofongo were also great, as were the yuca fries. The food was also very reasonably priced- quality food, very authentic, without paying a ton.

this place is a gem. a really fantastic neighbourhood resto offering deliciously prepared home-style dominican food. the location is understated as the resto is not located immediately on a major retail street/strip so it's easy to miss... but so worth making a trip to! tried the tilapia with rice and beans & sauteed veggies and everything was super yummy... great atmosphere and the nicest staff. perfect for dinner or grabbing quick drink & snacks. i can't wait to return!

I came across Puerto Viejo when I was looking for a place to have dinner before catching my friend's gig. With high Google and Yelp ratings, I figured this place would be, at the very least, good but I was wrong... it was AMAZING! Having just returned from visiting family in Puerto Rico, I was still craving the home cooked Latin cuisine I had gorged myself on there. This place satisfied not only my pallette but also my heart. First off, the decor is rustic, unique and warm. We were received a warm friendly greeting as soon as we stepped in. It's small and we got there just as they were setting up for a large party, so we opted to sit a the bar, (which was made of solid natural stone) where the bartender promptly tended to us. We started off with 3 empanadas; 2 beef and one cheese. The beef were delicious but the cheese was the surprise hit! Crispy yet soft chewy dough, mild savory flavors. For dinner we had the pernil (roast pork) which was succulent and had a simple flavor, and the chicharrones DE pollo; crispy juicy chicken. The yucca and yellow rice with red beans as sides were the perfect compliments. And the portions are perfect... big enough to satisfy but not too much that you can't finish each delicious morsel. Excellent food, excellent service! I wish I lived closer so I could eat here more often!

I went in on a weekday. I got lost leaving out the subway and the GPS on my phone was not cooperating. I got out at Atlantic Ave and Barclays Ctr and had to walk 10 minutes in order to get to my destination, however it took me more than 30 minutes before I figured it out. Once I made through the door I was greeted and they asked me if I wanted to be seated. I informed them that I wanted a take-out order. I ordered white rice, beans and beef stew. The rice was steamed; it was not gluey or chunky. It was cooked to perfection. The beans appeared to be pink bean (habichelas rosadas), they had good seasoning they tasted good. The beef stew was delicious! This is where it all came together. The meat was succulent and finger linking good. The portions were huge; there was enough food for me and my wife and still had leftovers for the following day. In regards to the restaurant itself as another reviewer said it had a rustic feeling to it. The only problem that I noticed that even when the place was nicely decorated and made you feel welcome; it was too small. There is no privacy, or not enough space between the tables. I need more space in order to talk and feel comfortable. I do not need to be sitting on someone else lap in-order to eat my dinner. Other that this minor detail I wouldn't hesitate to come back as a take-out customer.

Had a delicious cuban sandwich that was hot and fresh. The energy in this place was positive and palpable. We sat at the bar, and got our food to go, but while we were waiting we had a great time taking in the atmosphere and drinking a couple beers.

Visited recently on an unusually warm November evening. We had to wait for seating, but the evening was pleasant. Once inside, we found a small, cozy, lively setting. Cheerful music and a good crowd. The food was delicious. We started with empenadas and had a pork dish as the main. It was delightful. We imagined that on a cold winter night, this place would be terrific! We look forward to our next visit. Two notes: cash only, so be prepared. The ATM in the resto did not work for me, but another in the group had cash. No draft beer: but good local beers in bottles.

I love Puerto Viejo for so many reasons: THE FOOD/DRINKS -Omg, the Chimi Burger. I ordered it for the first time this past weekend after a climbing sesh and inhaled it like a madwoman. It comes with tomato, onion, and a Dominican slaw on top, and yuca fries on the side. I have a mad craving for another one! -Mofongo al Pilon. This is what I normally order here. It's mashed green plantains mixed with either chicken, pork or veggies. It's served as a ball with a thing of sauce. I like to destroy that ball ASAP and mix the sauce all up in the plantain mash. So delicious and filling! -Sangria is solid: perfect combo of wine and fruit. -Wine options are on point. Highly recommend the malbec. THE LOCATION -It's in a rando corner surrounded by warehouses and car mechanics, which happens to be just a couple blocks from my apartment. It's slim pickins in my immediate vicinity, so I LOVE that Puerto Viejo is here if I need some delicious food in a pinch without venturing out too far. THE SERVICE -Super chill, welcoming, friendly servers. I strolled in at like 10:45pm on Saturday night knowing that the kitchen was closing at 11pm. I fully expected them to scoff for wanting food so late, but instead I was welcomed with a smile and menu, sans warning. THE AMBIANCE -Dimly lit and intimate. There's a long, narrow table in the middle with stools, surrounded by a few tables and a full bar. I haven't taken a good look at the decor, but for some reason I get the feeling I'm in a pirate ship. On Saturday night they were playing Latin music. During the week it's a bit more chill. Highly recommended!

Very clean great service food came out just right...very tasty and authentic atmosphere with friendly and professional wait staff.

Excellent Dominican restaurant in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. Great atmosphere and food. Recommend the Pernil & Yucca Puree. For desert, Tres leches was pretty good. Look for specials.

Food is tasty, price is fair. Nice clean restaurant. Great service. Thanks for the extra attention to my kids, really appreciated .

Great fun, food, energy, service, and price. We had a great night. Busy, but servers and host work had and have a good mood about them. It is a rustic, cramped, fun informal setting. Great diverse crowd and must have heard 4 birthday songs. We ate and ate, had wine and beer, lots of apps and the bill for 4 was $150! Love this joint.

The food and wine were excellent. I had a pork dish with rice and beans and salad. I’m very critical of restaurant food since I love to cook but the pork was well seasoned and tender. Also had appetizers, avocado based. They were beautifully arranged and delicious. The service was perfect.

We visited on a date night. The restaurant was crowded but we had called ahead and were told our table would be ready in 15minutes. When we arrived we were seated shortly after. It's a very informal vibe. The seating were small tables, miss matched chairs was part of the ambiance. My chair was extremely uncomfortable I had to switch with my husband. We received water immediately but it took about 15 to 20 minutes before our waitress came to ask if we had questions. The passing waitress didn't even glance at us since we weren't assigned to her. I even tried to get her attention to ask her to call our server but no luck. When our server arrived she was very pleasant and took our order. The specials of the day does not have prices listed. After ordering 2spicy pork empanadas she delivered a beef empanada when we told her this was not our order she replied I don't know it's assigned to this table. When I called her back she said there was no spicy pork. Once again I told her we didn't order beef. She said just take it, it's not a problem. The rest of the evening went well. Ordered the salmon special, and stewed beef, and berry sangrias. Two sangrias with two different amounts of alcohol one was markedly stronger than the other. Then the bill came and at the bottom it said cash only. There were no posted signs the only clue was the ATM next to the bathroom. Also, the empanada we hadn't ordered was on our bill. Although it was only two dollars we didn't order it and wouldn't have had one if she didn't say we could have it. I did have a good night but I could use a bit more attention from the servers.

Searched TA for a trendy spot in Brooklyn and read the reviews for Puerto Viejo. Intrigued, we decided to go for lunch. Nothing special about the decor and the location of the restaurant, but the service and the food deefinitely made up for that. Quick service from the only waitress during the height of lunch time, but you couldn't tell. She was very nice and provided us with good suggestions about the menu and sangria. Everything we ordered was full of flavor and cooked to perfection. I'd go back, you should check it out.

Was searching for a new place to have lunch in Brooklyn and was intrigued by the description of Puerto Viejo, a Dominican Bistro. Always looking for a fun, trendy, inviting restaurant to try and this seemed right. Based on the reviews we read prior to arriving we knew this was a hidden gem surrounded by warehouses and car repair shops so that was no surprise to us when we arrived. However, we were pleasantly surprised to see how crowded it was for a weekday during lunch and thought that had to be a good sign. We started off with their red sangria which was light, fruity, refreshing but not overly sweet. Each dish we ordered from Tostones Rellenos, sweet plantains, camarones al Ajillo to the Cubano sandwich were delicious. The hostess was so sweet, attentive and never stopped smiling despite the fact that she was the only one there during this busy lunch hour. One helpful tip, they only accept cash and although they have an on-site ATM, it's always nice knowing this in advance and being prepared.

My friend took me to this neighborhood eatery for breakfast. At first I was intimidated by the menu listings as they were not in English- my only fluent language, but every item has a clear English description. Even if that hadn't been the case our waitress was so friendly and helpful, I'm sure I would have received any assistance necessary to make for a positive experience. I selected a glass of Morir Soñando described in the menu as a smooth blend of orange juice, milk and a hint of vanilla, but should simply be described as "amazing beverage" as well as Café con Leche, described as coffee with steamed milk, and, here I lose points for adventurousness, pancakes with strawberries. Everything was delicious. The atmospheres was cozy and perfect for catching up with my friend, who I hadn't seen in decades. There are many more adventurous food items than pancakes on the menu. The combination of homey atmosphere and delicious treats will make you want to visit multiple times.

We had once again delicious food here, very authentic home cooking. Well served, very professional kind and welcoming staff. Mixed local crowd, laid back & great vibes. Would return anytime and highly recommend this place!

The lack of seating is more than made up by the quality of the food. The authentic Domincan food passes muster by my Dominican son-in-law. Great value for the money!

Okay so I did rate this restaurant before but again I went to enjoy the atmosphere, the space--no shoulder to shoulder and butt to butt--not even at the community bar. So this time I got a picture of the food. It's so good and fresh, and you get plenty. I dove into the plate before I thought to take a picture first, but please do get the true picture. Wonderful experience. Cozy enough to dine alone, or with friends and family. The proprietors have not gotten so "big" as not to care what you think of their place. Courteous, Quick, and reasonably priced. Try them because I will be going again soon.

i visited tues.oct.6 at 5 pm with 3 friends. Restaurant was practically empty. We asked to put together 2 tables for 2 or if we could sit at a table for 6. Both requests were denied.we were told we had to sit at the designated table. A little while later a family comes in and puts together 2 tables as we had asked. The table for 6 remained empty until we left while we sat at the small table cramped for space. empanadas were $1. We spent over $100,each person had an entree then we decided to order empanadas to go and was charged $2 each. $1 with meal. What type of rule is that? We each had a meal. Will not argue and will not go back. Food just ok, portions small and horrible customer service.

Puerto Viejo is a restaurant that serves authentic Dominican food. If you are looking for consistent and delicious dishes packed with flavor, this is the place for you. My family and I have frequent this restaurant so many times they know my order before I even need to say it! I’ve been going here for a while and one thing I must say no matter how many times I get the same dish, it never fails! The flavors are there! The restaurant is small and quaint but fits the overall theme of it. Don’t let the location deter you from stopping in! The staff is very welcoming and it is family owned. It does get busy on Fridays and in the evening but going early in the day is your best bet. The appetizer platter is literally the best thing you can have if you want to sample different meats. This is a restaurant you do not want to pass up, give it a try and I guarantee you that you will be hooked! Don’t forget your dessert, flan that will not disappoint!

We visited for a drink whilst exploring Brooklyn. Enjoyed our happy hour beer and sangria.tried the empanadas and some excellent hot sauce.would definitely return if in area again

Great, cozy atmosphere. The food portion was well-sized and very tasty. The prices were all in line with restaurants in the area.

Came here for lunch after visiting the Chile Pepper Festival in Brooklyn Botanical Garden where I sampled and loved their yellow hot sauce. It was a bit of a walk but found this place amid a number of auto shops. Had the roasted pork with boiled yuca and more of that great hot sauce. Boy, did I enjoy my meal. Very reasonably priced too. Recommended for great Dominican food.

Superb food and service! I had the fish empanadas and seafood soup and YES it was worth the trip of walking/ finding parking.

My family has lived less than a block away from this hidden gem for more than a decade. While only recently receiving recognition for its amazing food, this place has always been a favorite for many in the neighborhood, including the many mechanic shops adjacent to the establishment. While dinner entrees can run anywhere from $10-$25 (a bit more, depending on what you want), which is a great deal, lunch is even cheaper. I always order the roast chicken or pork with a side of beans and rice for about $6. Add on some avocado slides or some fried sweet plantains, and your meal is around $9. They used to have this amazing home-made hot sauce, but I haven't seen it in my last couple of visits.

Strolled down to this lovely neighborhood restaurant and was pleasantly surprised with the service, food, and prices! Dominican food with a awesome twist. We had Oxtail & Sweet Potato empanadas...OMG! They were delicious. Dinner was crispy boneless chicken with rice and beans. Delicious, but want a sauce for the chicken. Berry sangria to wash it down. REAL sangria and not that syrupy stuff. Sorry, no pic of the food :-(. Next time
a pocket book surprise
Wonderfully authentic. Was looking to experience local cuisine away from the noise of the city. This was a great surprise
