Wonderful Plant Based Food in Brooklyn

By Hoosonfirst |

My wife and I had dinner at Ras last night to kick off our week in Brooklyn. We had eaten there last spring, and it was on our "gotta do again list" for this trip. We enjoyed the bode bown and burger so much that we went back again for lunch today. Kitfo burrito was fabulous. Fortunately we have the rest of the week for more happy returns.

Scrumptious and a bargain too!

My Sister-in-law lives in the neighborhood and frequents this place, otherwise I doubt we could have stumbled upon it by ourselves. It's colorful, with friendly and efficient staff; a vast dinner menu and a helpfully reduced lunch menu. I confess my knowledge of Ethiopian cuisine is limited and I could easily get lost in the dinner menu. Our server helpfully suggested selecting one of four themed sampler bowls from the lunch menu, making decisions easier. At around $16 per I assumed I would likely need more than the one bowl - but I was wrong. A lovely earthenware bowl amply filled with four delectable flavors was more than enough to satisfy my midday appetite. If I lived anywhere near Brooklyn, this spot would be in my regular rotation - delicious!

Good food

This is a great vegan Ethiopian spot. Ambiance: I really liked the decor here. It feels very Brooklyn. The seating arrangement is comfortable. You can bring a big or small group and it makes for an enjoyable experience. You could also have date night here as they have some really nice corner tables that feel intimate. Food: the food felt very authentic and seemed to match the flavor palate of Ethiopian food. Some of the food can be on the spicy side but I love spicy food so I really enjoyed it. The portions are good sized and as much as you want to order everything on the menu it’s just not possible unless you have a bit group. My favorite dish was the nachos. I loved the spongy fried chips with all the nachos ingredients. The chips are also thick so they can hold more. The tangy flavor went really well with the nacho cheese and beans. The bowls are also really amazing. All the seasonings were on point. Price: we got big portions so I feel the prices of the dishes were reasonable. Service: they were all very friendly and helped answer our questions if we were unfamiliar with something. Food came out quickly and on time.

Vegan so good!

Went for lunch on a weekday with a friend. I’m not vegan and enjoyed every bit of it. We had the mac ‘n cheese, the piassa platter and the cocktails did not disappoint. A one hour lunch turned into 4 hours. Now that’s how you know it’s good!

A great place

Our party of five had a remarkable dinner at this place last Friday when my wife and I were visiting our kids in Brooklyn - we enjoyed the meal so much we decided to come here next time we visit again. Since the place was packed, it took some time to get a table, which was a good sign. The food proved to be worth the wait as we were greatly impressed with the variety and flavor of the dishes. This was our first time here and our first taste of Ethiopian food. It made a great first impression. Excellent food, fantastic service, and wonderful atmosphere. I didn't drink though the rest of the party seemed to have enjoyed their drinks.

The sample plate is definitely the way to go. Service was excellent, and my favourite thing were the vegetable and lentil parcels for the starters! Great atmosphere

Recommend Ras!

Visited this colourful plant based Ethiopian restaurant in Brooklyn on a recommendation and were not disappointed. The ambience is bright and cheerful and the service friendly and fun. The traditional Ethiopian dishes are just amazing in vibrancy, texture and taste. We went for the platter with injera bread, a traditional soft sourdough bread, lovely textures and flavours. We tried the Days in the East coconut non alcoholic drink which was just delicious, and a stunning Margueritta too!

Amazing vegan Ethiopian Food

Sat at the bar where we received amazing service from Adam. We enjoyed the Mercato platter and the Piassa platter and the lentil and mixed veggie sambusas. All of the food was light, organic and fresh. Cocktails were also great. Would recommend the Fig Fig Bang Bang. Lively place with great music. Would recommend making a reservation because it is a small restaurant.

Amazing- gluten free options available.

Truly wonderful experience. We ordered both platters with rice and everything was fantastic. The restaurant was able to easily accommodate my gluten sensitivity which is always greatly appreciated.

An eleveted experience

I have been with family in June and booked for lunch in the newly opened West Village location. We are italians and passionate about high level cousine so quite open and always with high expectations. Despite we are not vegetarians I have to say our experience was sublime. Ingredients are of a superior and refined quality and all surprisingly so tasteful. 10 out of 10 is well deserved throughout the menu, shared by our 17 y son as well. On top, the ambience is well fitting the full concept and philosophy behind this restaurant. We were so positively surprised that we asked the waiter for more information about the background of this restaurant and we have been introduced to Romeo who owns and manage with his wife. A very interesting person, always smiling, talented, dedicated. We had a wonderful lunch. When you are seated at Ras you feel like you are contributing to making this world better :)

Mushroom tibs are highly recommended

By mommysuzie47 |

I went here primarily because I’m going to a more plant-based diet. But go here even if you are not. This is a place for serious foodies. Some of the sauces take days, apparently, and ingredients are flown in from Ethiopia. I took my time with an appetizer and was soon overwhelmed with a beautiful smell. The staff said it was the mushroom tibs. They were tremendously good.

First time eater of Ethiopian food

By Brad F |

First time eating plant-based food and Ethiopian for that matter, it was an enjoyable experience the food was delicious and very flavorful. The service was excellent, only one small complaint. The cake I had was just a little too cold, like it just came out the fridge. It was very good despite that, definitely would go to this restaurant again.

Who would have guessed?

Come on -- Vegan kosher Ethiopian food? From a place with "plant based" in its name? You have to wonder what is sacrificed, don't you? Well, the answer is, almost nothing. Forget the modifiers: this is very good Ethiopian food, period. The Mercato platter (under $20) has five traditional dishes, served on injera (or rice, but why?): preparations of collards, cabbage, red lentils, ground chickpeas, and string beans, with marvelous Ethiopian spices. The "mushroom tibs" doesn't much resemble tibs, but it is a fine dish in its own right. I look forward to exploring other dishes on the menu. The setting is pleasant and the service excellent.
