Great Nepalese Food

By Shivana P |

This was the first time that I've had Nepalese food, so I was pretty excited to try it. The restaurant was located in a small little place in a not so great area, but nobody bothered you, so no problem there. The menu offered both indian and nepalese food, but I opted for only the nepalese since I've had indian food many times before. Have the momos! they were really good! and also the naan with barbque chicken and cheese! first time I've ever had that and it was fantastic! You surely won't be disappointed by trying out this restaurant. I wasn't!

Namaste!

By Teji87 |

It was the craving for Momos or dumplings that made us come sniffing to Red Chilli in San Francisco. The place is very bare and simple with no air conditioning. We ordered Momos which were not perfect, they could have been better. The covering was a little too thick for my liking. The chilli chicken and veg biryani along with the Nepalese Thali were fairly good though.

Great value meal

I found this place on Google Maps and had dinner there. For $16+, I had some naan, momos (chicken dumplings), and a beer. This was a delicious, filling meal. Highly recommended.

Good Indian food near Union Square

By StewieYWG |

Stopped here for a meal on a recent stay in San Fran. It was a half block from our hotel, and smelled great from the outside, so we stopped in. The portions are good and we didn't have to wait long for our meal. The butter chicken was quite good!

The only thing i like about this restaurant is service. Restaurant ambience was very bad. Terrible food. Order chicken vindaloo or potato vindaloo Sweet. Very bad food

MO MO's were amazing!

By tod d |

The food was great, you have to get the mo mos when you go! Our mains were a little too spicey for us but big portions and if you can handle the heat super tasty. The staff were kind and helpful but the bathroom is in the building next door and is not the most pleasant. The location isn't great, San Francisco has a known homelessness problem and this area does not hide that.

This place has some amazing

By Tyler Anderson |

This place has some amazing Indian food. I work for an airline and travel the world eating Indian and this is amongst the very best. A particular favorite is the Chili Chicken. It's tender, spicy and just amazing! Their naan is so tasty as well. I can't wait for another San Francisco layover to order again. On my last layover I ordered two meals in a row from them....it's that good folks!! Do yourself a favor and place an order now!

Excellent 'hole in the wall' place

By Hendrik E |

From the outside you wouldn't think highly of this place. We went here on our first night in San Francisco for a quick bite and were pleasantly surprised. The food was very tasty and has an original ini dan character (as far as I can judge this not being from India). Staff is quick and friendly. After all we had a great meal (two indian curries, basmati rice, 2 x naan) and were surprised when we only had to pay ~$25 in the end. The only thing that wasn't that good was the mango lassi that we ordered. Great place to grab a quick, very tasty bite to eat.

A good bargain for Nepali fare

By IvanSusanin1613 |

This small restaurant has excellent casual dining . I recommend the vegetarian momos in particular, as well as the cheese naan. The service is rather slow, but friendly.

What a little gem!

By markKTM |

I lived six years in Nepal and really miss the cuisine. So glad to find this little gem of a restaurant. It's owned and operated by Nepalis. Have the Nepali thali, you can't go wrong. Every item was delicious, and very generous portions. Excellent and friendly service, too - Nepali hospitality is as wonderful as their food. Do yourself a favor and check this place out. You will love it.

Take out

By SOAJax |

I got take out twice when I was visiting SF, and the food was excellent and reasonable. Don’t forget the rice it does not come with the Tika Masala, but the price reflected that. There were a lot of choices the fact I chose this place size says a lot.

Beautiful food for vegetarians

By DoKtor2quid |

Friendly service, insanely busy for takeouts. The place is basic and small, but do not judge! They are too busy producing incredible food. The lady who served us was knowledgeable and friendly, and the food was well-priced and arrived in good time. We had to wait for a table, but it was worth the wait. We took a good amount away with us (enough for an evening meal the following night) as the portions were generous. For reference, we had Paneer Makhani, Daal, Jhaneko Saag (a kind of stir fried mustard leaf dish; fresh and delicious), Garlic Naan and Basmati Rice. Do go.

Best resteraunt

Delicious and authentic

By Natasha Z |

We orderd the chicken momo, not to be missed. The Naan'sin all their variations are sooo delicious. We also had the lamb curry and the saag dahl. Really tasty food.

Superb Fish Tandoori

By Zw532110 |

The staff are friendly and the food is excellent. I ordered the Whole fish tandoori ($17.99) and they prepared it perfectly: soft and succulent flesh with a crispy skin. The accompaniments of lemon, onion and cilantro were welcome and complimented the spice. The customers are clearly regulars, and friendly. I let people who travel all over the Bay Area but try to drop in for dinner at this restaurant. The chicken curry with naan was popular. Also, try the Chai! It is good, an excuse for conversation, and the owner will probably insist :)

So good.

By ChakraDancer |

Had never had the Momo before and I almost cried when I ate the last bite. The Butter Chicken and naan both exceeded expectations. Try this place!

Delicious Nepali Food

By David B |

The restaurant itself is pretty ordinary but the food was amazing. I had the thali which offered a good variety of flavors. The chicken curry in particular was amazing.

Bold flavor is no question

By LizzS |

Finally I can enjoy best Chicken Biryani rice. Full of flavor and rice is perfectly prepared. Also really enjoyed wrapped Tandoori, perfect food to go.

So so

By jamker2018 |

I ordered some two different types of biryanis. ( chicken and lamb) I was surprised that it was just so so. The mango lassi was ok.

Hidden Gem

By Dpf |

The neighbourhood itself is a toilet, but the restaurant is a great wee place that serves lovely, flavoursome food, the service friendly, and the atmosphere calm.

What a find

By Jospos |

Just around the corner from my hotel. This is a hole in the wall type of place - maybe 8 tables or so. Great, friendly service, great food and very reasonable. I had the chicken tikka masala and a garlic naan - very good.

Quick service and very reasonably priced

By Gerry K |

It is a Basic place with a fast Service. Food I found a touch better than average. I ordered hot yet it was just nicely spiced. I also found the Nepalese goat dish just average

Excellent food

By HGC_13 |

Small little fire cracker

By Maverick |

Great little Indian restaurant. Awesome service and very tasty food. Even the simple vegetarian curry was nice. Naan was well cooked as well. Well done guys.

Don’t judge a book by it’s cover

By RayGrieger |

This restaurant is nothing to look at and if it wasn’t for earlier reviews I would never have gone in but I’m so glad I did! The food is brilliant and really great value! The flavors are amazing, well worth the trip!

Ok to have veg food at SFO

By chandse |

One can get the taste of india/pakistan food at SFO in red chilli Ordinary food cost 15US$ good ambiance but overpriced if no choice one can go to this hotel for survival

Great Place

By Countrysnail |

Really good food for a good price. I had the chicken vindaloo, and it was really tasty, an authentic sour flavour with some heat. They actually serve beer too, which a lot of the Indian restaurants in this area don't seem to. The staff were efficient and friendly, but not constantly asking if we were ok etc. Definitely recommend. Don't be put off by the café look of the place.

Delicious Nepalese food in a cozy, relaxed atmosphere

By Maggie B |

I live around the corner from this place, so have eaten here many times. Nepali/Himalayan food is uncommon in San Francisco, so I was really happy when it opened near me. It's family owned, the people who work here are very nice, and the food is excellent. Much of the menu is standard Indian/Pakistani food you'd find in many of the restaurants in the same neighborhood, so stick with the Nepali and house specialty menus. Their momos are wonderful - tender dumplings filled with either a chicken mixture or veggie. My favorite dish is not always on the menu - stir-fried mustard greens with toasted garlic - fantastic. There's a tandoori menu as well and several curries. They serve complimentary chai and their naan is wonderful. Note that if you want khasi ko masu (goat curry), call ahead to make sure they have it that day. Final tip: don't let the neighborhood spook you. It is somewhat seedy, but I've lived there for 6 years and never had anything worse than panhandling happen to me. That block and a few others in that area are on the upswing.

Excellent place for Nepali food

By Bigyan K |

This is an excellent place for Nepali food. It's hard to find a Nepali place to eat here in the city and this place is as good as you'd get it in Nepal. The new Nepali cook is fantastic and knows his craft!

Great

By Kiran G |

Best Nepalese and Indian food in town. Very friendly staff. OMG momo is my best. Parking is little hard.

Value for money, great food

By Matti365 |

Had a great garlic naan and a spicy chili chicken. Tasted very authentic and far from the bland excuse for food you sometimes get at asian and middle eastern restaurants in the states. Price was under ten bucks plus bread and an IPA was $4. Will definitely come back if I'm in this part of town again.

Yes yes. It’s so good

By Summerasalifestyle |

Nepalese style foods. I read about this tiny lil hole in the wall on eater when searching for dumplings. So it was part of a dumpling tour. Chicken momo— dumplings Good dumplings but dipping sauce is what makes it.

Nice tasty india food

Worst Service Ever

By andrewwang16 |

I ordered delivery food from Red Chilli on a Sunday night. It was a simple of 2 Chicken Tikka Masala and 2 Basmati Rice. I ordered at around 7:00pm and they gave an estimated delivery of 45 minutes - 1 hour. After waiting about 2 hours, I asked for a status update and they told me it was "on the way". After another half hour I called again and they said it would arrive in "10 minutes." After another half hour I angrily cancelled the order because it was clear the food was never coming. I will never eat here or order food from here again and nobody in their right mind should ever.

Dont' overlook this small spot

By jelund |

Red Chili is a small place with everything I was looking for: delicious food, clean, friendly, and decently decorated. The lamb curry was tender and very tasty as well as the veggie basmati rice. They recommended the Ras Malai for dessert, something I had never had before -what a treat!

Delicious food and friendly service

By Meg D |

We discovered this "jewel" while visiting SF and since then we were dining there every single day till the end of our stay. Food was very delicious and authentic with a nice variety of choices! We tried most of the menu and all dishes were yummy! The service was very friendly and helpful in explaining if you didn't know some dish (first time we tried Nepali food). The restaurant is rather small in size so if you plan to come during peak hours you may have to wait for a table but it's worth it! Alternatively, you can order food "to go" via phone or online. Very nice family business, keep going :-)!

Can't expect better in SF

By Siddhartha R |

nice, small, cozy place. Very good, reasonably priced, and fresh Indian veg food. Customized to order with full details. Location is easy to access and service boys are too nice. Amazed!

Average food for veggies

By Chandra Sekhara... V |

Been to this hotel in search of veg food being a vegetarian the reception at hotel was ordinary the indian meals costed 15 US$ but no additional servings average taste. Ok if you do not get any other options

Local curry house

By Gazatron11 |

Me and my partner are big curry fans back in the UK and really fancied something other than burger and fries for dinner in SF. I stumbled across the Red Chili on TripAdvisor and being 2mins from the hotel decided to give it a go. The restaurant is very small with only a few tables and the guys are cooking right next to you in a makeshift kitchen. At first we thought this was odd compared to the curry houses back home but we really enjoyed ourselves. The aromas when you first walk in get your stomachs runbling and the atmosphere is very laid back. The food was also very good and quite similar to back at home and we both enjoyed it.

Nice

By JagJohns |

Nice tasty food. Ordered the Nepalese thali, butter chicken, chicken momo and a mango lassi. All up was $43 incl tip. Best of the day was the butter chicken.

Oh my gosh! I'm in love.

By JChan |

Oh my gosh. This is the most amazing Himalayan/North Indian food ever! We ordered the goat curry, spinach paneer, and the chicken momo with garlic naan and pulaw. Everything is so flavourful. We ordered the medium spice level and it was just right (we have a high spice tolerance). The goat curry was tender, the spinach paneer was creamy and rich, and the chicken momo was very flavourful dumplings. The pulaw was really good. I've never had pulaw with raisins before but I guess it's a North Indian or Himalayan style. I enjoyed it as it gave the rice a little of a sweet flavour. If you're in San Fran, you MUST try this place! I was only in SF FOR 5 days and I'm considering going back for one more meal before I leave!

Great flavours and great service

By Simon K |

Just a small place but a nice atmosphere with a good mixed clientele. The food is excellent, perhaps not as oily as the real thing but that's a bonus, the flavours are truly authentic. Service was attentive and friendly, thanks Manahari!

What a find!

By Nev160 |

We stumbled on the Red Chilli when looking for an Indian restaurant and we were not disappointed. We were greeted by a very friendly staff member and were seated immediately. The restaurant was small but had a great view onto the street. We had samosas and the chicken MoMo for entree. Both were excellent. The MoMo are small steamed dumplings served with a beautiful sauce. For main we had the chicken and lamb tikka masala. The meats were both soft and delicious and the rice was fresh. The sauces were absolutely amazing. We had cheese naan which was yummy. Drinks were cheap and service was great. We will definitely be back!! Thank you for having us.

Great tasting authentic momos and biryani

By Sneha G |

I m from India and trust me when I say I can tell you what is good biryani! They don’t do on-the-bone-dum-chicken biryani (I don’t eat goat) but they do a wonderful prawn one on request (it’s not on the menu) .... I requested it to be hot and it was great... as close to home as it could be. The flavours are great and the quantity is generous. But most importantly... the staff genuinely wants to make its customers happy... they serve with a smile and go out of their way to make the dining experience in the very humble hole-in-the-wall place worth coming back to again and again. They even deliver to Hilton around the corner for an order as small as 10 dollars ... without hesitation and with a smile!! Highly recommend.

Yummy Hole in the Wall

By MNR2 |

Checking out SF but sick and tired of the overpriced blah food of Union Square area? Check out this Nepalese gem/hole in the wall! Pros: Reasonably priced Food is excellent Only four blocks from Union Square Cons: Sketchy neighborhood Bathroom is in the SRO next door No frills

Good Butter Chicken and Naan

By David P |

This is a very small Indian restaurant on Jones St with good food at very reasonable prices, especially for San Francisco. The ambiance is below average as the restaurant is quite dated, though it appeared to be clean. It is in a rougher part of town, especially if you are walking up from Market Street (e.g. the Civic Center metro stop). If you are coming from Union Square, the neighborhood deteriorates as you walk up Geary (or other nearby streets), but is much less sketchy than coming from Market. The Samosas were quite good, though the tamarind and green chutney were served in reusable plastic bowls that had obviously been stuck in the refrigerator after being used by a previous guest. Even the mini-spoon in the sauces was cold meaning it had likely been previously used. This was pretty off-putting - just keep the sauces in a larger, clean container and put a small amount in clean dishes for each customer. I had the butter chicken and naan which were both good. The keer was also good, with good flavor (though too sweet) and could have had more nuts/raisins for texture. The food was clearly the focus for the owners. The Red Chilli could easily be a 4-5 star experience with an updated interior and better attention to service details (such as not reusing serving containers). I would come back, but probably would not go out of my way to come here, and would probably stick to solo meals as opposed to coming with my wife or colleagues who may be less forgiving of the area, ambiance and attention to details. Maybe delivered service is their target market. The dishes I tried were quite good, and prices were very reasonable.

First class

By Karl P |

Went to this restaurant three times in a week. Food authentic and excellent with a home cooked taste. Had many different foods from the menu and all above average. Staff very friendly and welcoming. Would fully recommend to anyone while in San Francisco

very good, very spicy.

By stephanieschoettle |

We ordered take out from here when we were visting on our honeymoon. They prepared our food very quickly. The momos were outstanding and the lamb vindaloo was great. It's a bit of a hole in the wall but the didn't effect us, as we just got it to go.

Hole in the wall = YUMMY!

By PNWtravelergirl |

Amazing food! We went pretty late at night and it was filled with locals. Curry, chicken mo mo and veggie samosas and the house nan. No frills, nice staff and good food. Prices were acceptable too. We would definitely go back again!

Nepali khaja at the heart of San Francisco

By Devesh D |

Truly amazed by the Nepali choices at Red chilli, San Francisco. Though I didn’t try khaja or Lal masu (red mutton curry) or even momo, I was delighted by the fact that such choices exist at the heart of downtown SF. I was having a quick lunch with my business contact. Restaurant was not busy during the lunch hours. We could get our orders of Indian vegetable curries and naans in just few minutes. The place prepares great Indian curries too! Above all, the ras malaai dessert was simply too good. A must try when you visit red chilli

Momos are delicious!

By steviepandme |

Excellent, spicy food that is priced well. We ordered the momo appetizers and they were served with chutney. It was delicious! It really hit the spot after a long day of traveling.

Nice food

By reise-tanta-di |

My friend and I just wanted a quick snack. We stayed at a nearby hotel. I ordered the vegetarian Nepalese Momo. It was as tasty as those served in Nepal. Nice staff and fast service. Good job!

Very Good

By Mark M |

The atmosphere isn't much but the service was great and food was good. Had the lamb vindaloo (not as spicy as I would have liked but very good nonetheless). The garlic naan was outstanding. Very casual and inexpensive.
