My wife is from Scotland and was craving some good British food. We decieded to give Red Lion a try after reading good reviews on Yelp and seeing it on Diners Drive-In and Dives. The place is a lot smaller than I thought, but there was still plenty of seating. We wanted a booth in the bar area, but they were all full. We ended up sitting at the raised bar area with stools so we could watch the soccer game that was showing. For appetizers we had the chicken tandoori quesadilla. It was terrific. The meat was well seasoned and cooked perfectly. The naan bread that was used instead of the tortillas worked well. I really loved this dish. We also had the sausage rolls which is one of my wife's favorites. We got 2 huge bangers stuffed inside of phyllo dough. The sausages were moist and flavorful and the dough light and flaky. They serve them with HP sauce and mustard. This was tasty as well. For entree we decided to split the chicken tikka masala. This was very good. A little spicy but not overwhelming. Nice balance of flavor. Served with basmati rice and naan bread. It was a good sized portion. Two downsides of this place keep it from getting 5 stars. First is the service. There were only 2 waitresses there when we visited. They were pretty busy covering the entire restaurant. It took a long time whenever we asked for something before it arrived. Second is the prices. I know you get large portions here, but the price is still a little much considering what you are getting and what others are charging. I Just based on quality of food though, this place is fantastic. I loved both their British offerings and the Indian food that we sampled. We will definitly be back and sample other dishes. Maybe try to come and take advantage of some of the specials.

Good place for a pint and fish and chips. A real Brit hangout but also lots of Texans trying out the pub. Full of regulars who seem to make the place and are very friendly. The staff are good and the choice of beers pretty good. I had the curry (Friday nights) and it was pretty spicy and very good.

The food is the best part along with a cold imported beer on tap. The environment feels like an English pub. They have good service and food selection.

My oldest daughter discovered this gem a few years ago through her quest for good beer! It is now a tradition that every time she is in town, we go there for the traditional Sunday dinner. Roasted parsnips and Yorkshire pudding..and of course a good selection of draft beer..What's not to love!!.

I've been to England and this is no English Pub. First of all most of the food is Indian, not English. If I wanted Indian food I would have gone to an Indian restaurant. I was looking for food like I had in England. The French fries were fries and not chips...it's how you cut the potato! Fish was good, cod but a bit greasy. The drinks are limited and VERY STRONG. You can easily get drunk on 2 cocktails. Disappointed this was on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. Houston has better food than here.

I was willing to give this place a pass when two of my favorites — the beef vindaloo and Sunday Roast — became inedible because of tough meat, after years of perfect preparation, because I still enjoyed their other Indian fare, burgers and drinks. But an unbelievably rude waitress and the fact that the management didn’t care to hear the complaint of a longtime, loyal customer guaranteed that we will never be back — nor will the many family members and friends to whom we’ve recommended the place in the past and related this latest experience. This snarky young woman chose to pick a fight with me* about whether there was more than one kind of cheese offered on the burger. Seriously. It went on for three visits to our table with completely pointless remarks that bordered on harassment, since they had the kind of cheese I wanted. We left money for our unfinished drinks, and my husband spoke with the bartender on the way out (no manager on duty), who seemed sympathetic and said he would “take care of it.” A customer at the bar indicated she had also had a problem with the waitress. Despite messages left on Facebook Messenger, by phone and email, I never heard back from management. Judging by remarks here and other social media, this has become a common problem. *Exchanges: I asked for cheddar on my burger. “That’s all we’ve got,” she said, rolling her eyes. “Well, no, we’ve had others before,” I said. “Well, you’re wrong,” she said, admitting, though, that she had only recently started. “I’m fine,” I said, “but it’s probably not best to tell customers they’re wrong.” End of issue, I thought. Then she returns with our drinks, slams them on the table and said, “I can see I’ve irritated you.” Actually she had only mildly, but I’d been on my phone texting since she was there and showed no signs of irritation. “You haven’t, but now you are starting to,” I said, thinking that since we’d ordered two expensive drinks, an appetizer and meals and were on our way to at least a $60 tab and tip that she might have backed off, at the least. No, she returned moments later to proclaim that she had talked to someone who had worked there “a long time,” and cheddar was the only cheese EVER OFFERED, then stomped off. By then, we’d both had enough. She seemed wired, high on something, and puzzlingly hostile for someone in a service industry.

Surprisingly good food! Dark atmosphere, but one of the better English pubs I've been to in Houston!

My wife and I returned to the Red Lion Pub for Monday Hamburger night and my wife ordered grilled tuna with vegetables off the menu and felt she had the best Tuna she has had in Houston and that says a lot. The portion was very large, the vegetables were fresh and the price was outstanding. I stuck to my hamburger with Stilton Cheese.

Family wanted pub food. They previously visited, so i had to try. Day after St Patty's. Ordered fish and chips, not crispy enough. pass. The Chicken Tika Masala had good flavor, a 7/10 on spiciness. Nan bread ok. The hamburger was good. The beer selection is very good. The decor yup you are in England. Might give it another try.

It's a very nice environment, with great service and great people around. The best part are the draft beers. The food is the weak point, but compensated by all the rest. Very fun place...

Good to visit, the Thai fish soup is especially good and to be recommended. Staff are very friendly and helpful particularly Rachel who is English and is usually around at the weekends.

We say The Red Lion on DDD with Guy F....ordered the chicken satay, Shepard's pie and chicken tikka masala. The satay was wonderfully cooked and I loved the sweet chili dipping sauce. The tikka was spicy and very tasty. The service was good and our waitress was very attentive.

Okay so I went to a pub for food and got less than I expected. In hindsight that sounds dumb! But I thought a drive in, diners and dives locale would be awesome and maybe there is something awesome we didn't try but believe me when I tell you it is not the fish and chips. But frankly the service was mediocre and the hostess was just rude. We asked for a booth and were told they are for large parties. Then she immediately sat two couples in separate booths. When asked about it she said more folks were coming for those parties but they never did show. Hhhhmmmm!, The chicken tikka masala was really good and the portion was huge but how do you totally mess up fish and chips?.. The place is nicely decorated and does feel like you have been beamed to London and that was cool. Great Tv's and good sports but empty glasses and long waits for the check and the change coupled with the hostess means this will be a one stop for us.. Britannia may rule the waves but should leave the cooking to the Cajuns.

Went to this little placed based on the show Diners, Drive-ins, and dives that airs on the food network. I sat at the bar and the service from the bartenders was fantastic and they had a great selection of beer on tap. I order the Sheppard's Pie and it arrived hot and served with a side of peas; the portion was huge but the pie was a little bland. All in all a great little English pub

While exploring. Houstons gastronomic diversity we hit upon a place that is phenomenal. I love food that is tasty, well prepared, and better than ever expected. The appetizers all the way down to the warm delicious comfort food ,warmed bread pudding ; slathered with a tasty caramel and liquer sauce and freshly whipped scrumptious whipped cream. The fusion of english and Indian cuisine was an unexpected delight, and if you like surprises ;have a go at genuinely delicious fare at beyond fair prices. Come on down! Houston has it all!!

Beer temperature was not good. Menu has few options and price was a little bit expensive. I do not recommend.

So my sister frequents here for the daily specials. Turns out mondays they have specials on burger/sliders. So my nephew has no problem eating sliders. The cheeseburger was a good deal here on that day. Of course this place has an extensive menu if you want other items.

It might just be the best British pub food in Houston. My family had a great lunch. The fire place was warm and cozy. Our waitress we very helpful.

I was shocked at how nice & cozy this pub was. I felt like I was at home with friends eating and drinking. Very clean and service was super....clientel was perfect for us...early 30's tired of the club scene but not ready for home. We had a ball.....watched a bit of sport and just hungout. Fireplace was a nice touch.

Great British pub! Wonderful location and a great beers selection! I recommend the Weizen super good 😉👍

This is my favorite place for fish and chips with English peas. They also have a good beef stew in a Yorkshire pudding bowl. I went for St. Patrick's Day and had to order a green drink. I don't like beer so I ordered a grasshopper. Normally they aren't strong but this was yummy and strong. I made the mistake of ordering two. Wow! Was I feeling no pain.

The food and beverage selections are perfect. Check out the nightly specials.

Food is always great. Fresh made. Been visiting the Res Lion for years, never had anything that was let than delicious - from the Sunday roast, tikka masala to the fish and chips. Highly recommend the tandoori quesadillas and Cornish pastie. And don't want to forget to mention the shepherds pie, bangers and mash and the bread pudding. Come hungry the portions are huge and you'll want to eat it all. Full bar and great selection of beers and wines.

Great food! and great little pub! Has nice outdoor seating. Typical English pub food. But not so typical indian: Tandoori quesadillas are awesome!

As others have mentioned, this was on diners dives and drive ins ( what is that show called?), so we had to try it. We got the most popular menu items, the curried chicken wings and the tandoori nachos. They were both good (spicy!) but I would like to go back and try some other things, like the bangers and mash or the Sunday special. Looked like a great beer selection.

If you are looking for a decent choice of beer and tasty pub food, this is it. Food choices are typical for a pub, tasty and heavy, as expected. Some Texas flavors too. Beer selection is not huge but sufficient. Certainly recommended.

My first visit was didn't disappoint! I had heard about the Red Lion and thought I'd give it a try. Everything we ordered was really tasty and nicely prepared. Cozy, fun atmosphere and our server was most helpful. A really great experience...we'll be back!

My family and I came here to eat dinner on a Wednesday night. We were told it would be quite a wait. I asked how long and was told my guess was as good as hers. Who says that! She is the one that works there and has the experience to know how long the average wait should be. I have never heard any hostess ever say that to anyone. Simply horrible customer service! My family and I left and went to eat at Barnaby's Cafe. Oh yea, the parking is horrible too.

They have a great beer selection and a good pub type atmosphere with dart boards and a terraza outside but the food is very poor - this is e second time I have eaten here and the food is low quality and woudlnt recommend it at all. The service was good but the drinks are pricey

The Red Lion is a British pub which serves food quite a bit better than the standard pub grub fare. I say “British” because the red lion rampant – on their sign and in their name – refers to the Royal Standard of Scotland, rather than anything English; but neither the food nor the draughts are particularly Scottish: you could find places like this anywhere from the Hebrides to Dover. Their menu includes classic dishes from both Blighty (Cornish pasties, Shepherd's Pie) and Injuh (Beef Vindaloo, Chicken Tikka Masala). Folks flock here for their daily specials: Mondays you get a half-pound Angus beef burger for $5; Tuesdays, a moules frites for $10, Wednesdays, a curry and a pint for $22, Thursdays a filet mignon dinner for $24, Fridays, fish and chips for $14, and Sundays, your choice of either a roast beef with Yorkshire pudding or their seasonal roast for $22. I’ve had all of them except the Sunday roast, and they’re all good. I introduced a San Franciscan to their Thursday special a few years ago, met him in Houston week before last, and he insisted on returning here on Thursday for the filet. Not just because of the deal, either: because it’s extremely good. To be perfectly honest, my favorite item on the menu isn’t any of the above: it’s their artisan cheese plate, which they show as a “Nibble” at $22. Doubtless if you’re a party of four you could order it as a shared starter, or as a shared munchie with a pint or two. However I’ve ordered is as my full meal: the cheeses are incredibly good. They’ve got parking north and west of their building (turn in from Shepherd) but on some nights, all spots are taken, forcing you to search for a spot on a side street. You can drink and dine indoors or on the front patio—during weekday rush hour Shepherd isn’t my cup of tea for al fresco dining, but at any other times, the patio tables go fast, barring rain. Service is fair to excellent, depending which wench you get. The traditional British pub atmosphere is great; there are several TVs hanging down for sporting events. The only reason I rated them Very Good instead Excellent is that there are other places within a two-mile radius with better selection and prices for draught beer. However--Red Lion has much better food. ps: after you complete your review TA asks you questions; they just asked me whether this is an Indian restaurant and you have to pick either Yes, No, or Not Sure. I am sure, and the answer is neither yes nor no! So I'll just re-confirm that while this is NOT an Indian restaurant, it DOES serve Indian food. Curries are a traditional staple at British pubs. Similarly, of course you can get fish and chips, but of course the Red Lion isn't a seafood restaurant either!

We love going here when were in the mood for a pub. Beer selection is good. Last night, our table had the Fish & Chips, Shepards Pie, Seared Scallops and Chicken Tikka Marsala. Everyone was very pleased with their food. Portions are large. The Chicken Tikka was spicy, but not too spicy. Besides the food, you will find the other patrons are usually very friendly. If you have troublle hearing in louder places, I would suggest you try this place for lunch or an early dinner. We went at 6:30 last night and it was fine but by 7:30 it was loud and my husband had to cup his ears to hear.

My wife and I just visited the Red Lion (24Jun18) with the hopes of having another good meal. When we sat down I asked the bartender (politely and without any contention) if they started having there famous Monte Cristo sandwich again. She responded extremely firmly and rudely by saying "I have told you and your wife three prior times that we don't have it", and went on to say both my wife and I have been argumentative about the issue before and that she wasn't going to put up with it again. She went on to say that she wasn't going to serve us and basically asked us to leave. I have been coming to this restaurant for as many years as I can remember and ALWAYS been polite if not a good customer. Both of us are in our 60's and never have been rude to anyone in this restaurant or any other and we eat out every day. And the truth of the matter is my wife has never said anything about wanting a Monte Cristo and doesn't even eat them (another wrong point the bar staff incorrectly mentioned). Additionally, I have ONLY been into the Red Lion once since they stated they were not selling the Monte Cristo for dinner (originally stating they would continue to carry it for lunch). This was another wrong point the lady bartender stated. Additionally, our last visit was more than several months ago and I only asked if they were carrying it - but went on to order and enjoy something else - and I wasn't ugly or rude then either. I have never been treated so rudely and with disrespect by anyone or any restaurant and STRONGLY recommend everyone think twice about visiting this restaurant. There was no reason for the bar staff to talk to us in the manner they did, and we never raised our voice or were argumentative - ever. I personally can not believe the owner employs bar staff that treats repeat customers the way this young lady did us. I have directed 10's if not hundreds of new patrons to this restaurant and will strongly recommend in my circle of friends and acquaintances not to visit this establishment again unless something is done about this bartender/wait staff person. The owner and manager have always treated us with respect and welcomed us - this evening was a total shock.

We were looking at English breakfast in town while we were in Houston and found this place. We were there yesterday to have breakfast. We ordered English breakfast, coffee, and orange. The food arrived slightly slower than any other restaursnts we sat-in to eat. But the food didn't disappointed us at all. Big portion great quality and good service.

In Houston on business, I decided to go to the Red Lion (I had seen it on a TV program). I sat at the bar and ordered an Old Speckled Hen beer, which is a favorite of mine, but few places I've been serve. I was in luck: it was curry night. I never had curry before, but wanted to try it for quite some time. Megan, the bartender, recited a list of curries in ascending order from mild to hot. I ordered the medium-spicy Lamb Keema. It was a little sweeter than I expected, and had a nice heat to it. It was such a large portion, I wasn't able to finish, but I promise I'm not complaining. Overall, I had a really nice experience at the Red Lion, and if I find myself in Houston again, I'll go again. Good food, knowledgeable staff, good location (just a few minutes from I-10), and a nice beer selection for those of us who enjoy British beers (Harp, Boddington's, London Pride, and Belhaven, just to name a few). If you get the chance, and you like British foods and beer, you should visit The Red Lion.

This is a great British style pub near downtown, they have a large selection of draft and bottled beers and a great pub menu if you are hungry.

Very nicely appointed, cozy and warm bar scene with historic icons adorning the walls. Only TWO tvs blaring sports which i always appreciate, a satisfying bar menu.and of course, beer galore. Prompt and friendly servor provided a PRETTY pricey wine list, with a glass of SImi white coming in at $12; not unusual I"m told for Houston. All in all a wonderful neighborhood bar that i plan to revisit to check out the food menu!

Very good fish and chips reasonable service and prices with a lovely fire 🔥 at back but while lighting was overall ok those disco lights are confusing tacky and way out of place ... maybe just US culture that I don’t understand ...still don’t like it tho

Spending time in a country other than England is rough after you've become addicted physically and emotionally to the pub. The Pub. Not just the atmosphere: which really cannot be duplicated in the States... But the Red Lion was as comfortable to this future expat as I can hope for... But also the menu is difficult to top. I had a craving for fish... And I knew I had to drive to find the right kind of meal... I chose the Red Lion because its website is appealing and because it's been featured on PBS :) The beer selection is adequate for my taste (Newcastle draught, please). The peas were still in circles which is confusing but the fish and the potatoes were exactly why I'm thinking about that pub becoming The Pub for me :)

I went there twice while vacationing in Houston. The first night we went we were placed in a corner which was strange. We ordered pita bread appetizer and it was horrible. Tasted like burnt rubber smells. We ordered the chicken tikki Masada and the stew. It was very yummy. Our other visit, was downright horrible. Our waitress was overbooked with tables so the service was slow. A person at the next table asked us a question and we started talking a little bit. The waitress that was servicing that table came up to me , quite pissed look on her face and told me in a very rude tone, "they are eating dinner. You need to leave my table alone. " I told her they asked us something and we responded. She didn't want to hear it. I didn't appreciate being talked so rudely to. We didn't pester that other table. I got my food to go and I can honestly say I will NEVER dine in again. And the food prices are a bit insane too.

Met a real Brit at the bar. The shepherds pie was fantastic and the Newcastle Porter hit the spot. I met the owner, too. Great atmosphere.

Was suggested as a must try from a popular food network show (DDD). Well worth the time. Loved the atmosphere and selection of draft beers. For lunch I tried the Chicken Tikka Masala and it is the best I've ever had.

Spouse and I visited this pub first time a while ago, and make it a stop each time in Houston. It's the closest you can get to a English pub in Houston. It does have an extensive menu, with many English dishes. Bar keep said they won 3rd place in the US last year for it's fish and chips. Saturday/Sunday they serve a traditional English breakfast all day. Also TV's to watch sports. Just now beginning to open pub 7:30a on Saturdays, to watch English Premier League matches. Spouse and I love this place, and visit with an English ex-pat that we met there, each time in Houston. Has liquor, and lot's of beer on tap.

We went on Saturday around noon. The place wasn't packed at all. Easy to park and to find seating inside. Our waitress wasn't the friendliest, and she didn't check on us often. I don't think she refilled my water during my entire meal. We got the artichoke dip with garlic bread. It was fantastic!! It had a spicy kick to it. I got the cheeseburger with the blue cheese bacon mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes were also great. The burger was just average, but the bun was light and fluffy. I liked that. I went here because I saw it on DDD. It was a nice addition to my trip to Houston. Food was kind of pricey though. I don't remember anything under $14.

Great, great place. Service is sketchy, either really good, or laughably rude, depending on your waitress. The food is delicious.

The Red Lion has a great "British Pub" atmosphere. The owner, Craig, is often in the bar. It's a great place to meet for a "pint" and some British food such as Shepherd's Pie, Curry (though not British, this is a staple in most British pubs), Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding. Each night there are specials - we have tried Wednesday for Curry and Thursday for Steak Night. Enjoy a great atmosphere especially during the World Cup or any major sporting event.

The feel inside is authentic English Pub with lots of wood and booths and the menu selection does include more items than are normally found in many so-called British Pubs. Went there for Sunday lunch and could not resist having the Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding. It came with parsnips, Brussel Sprouts, mashed potato and peas. The meat was quite tender and the Yorkshire Pudding tasty-all else was fine-gravy warm and with a good consistency.Sprouts were also well cooked-just firm enough to let the taste come through. We also had a bread pudding. It was tasty enough but for my liking was too much like a mousse with a type of light sauce whereas my preference is to have a pudding with more body. Prices are higher than would be expected for many of the items. All in all I give it 4 stars because of the atmosphere, the somewhat greater variety of British fare on the menu and the quality of the food.

Wear anything to this place. They specialize in curry dishes and the tandoori chicken quesadillas are a top ten dish in Houston. VERY casual and a typical British pub.

Great place. Eat here often, but a couple of items to consider: 1. Since be featured on the Food Network, if you come during a weekly special or during a European football game, be prepared to wait. A long time. 2. Service drops considerably during #1 above. But, for most other times.... 3. The ice tea is a must have. It's freshly brewed Earl Grey. Perfect. 4. The national dish of England, Chicken Tikka Masala, for about $18 is delicious. 5. The Guiness Beef Stew in Yorkshire Pudding, the Chicken Pot Pie and the Shepard's Pie are all great as well. 6. Many British expats can be found here enjoying a wide selection of English beers on tap too.

Ugh! What is this...A week of bad service from restaurants I normally adore!?! :/ The 2 stars are for the food -it's still yummy but after today, sadly, I won't be returning to dine on it again. I literally got SHUSHED (finger up to her mouth and everything) by our server when I was about to ask if they happened to have off menu ciders in cans (i.e. Crisp etc.). Apparently, she REALLY REALLY wanted to explain which ciders they had instead of letting me ask a question. Extremely rude. Under normal circumstances I would have gotten up and walked out, but I was with my parents visiting from out of town. My Mom has appointments at MD Anderson this week and really wanted fish and chips. I wasn't going to make a big deal out of it. I've never felt so mistreated by a server before at this establishment -much less in front of my family, and I've literally been coming here for years. As I write this I'm still so mortified at her atrocious behavior. I do not remember her name as I didn't bother to look when paying the bill -she was shorter, highlighted long hair, with pronounced bags under her eyes (sorry, I didn't get her name). Look, I get that we all have bad days -maybe she had a bad night before (given her baggage), but that's no excuse to treat someone with such disrespect. I see other reviews mentioning rude servers/bartenders and when that happens in this town -well, that's the beginning of the end for most establishments. Such a shame, as I really enjoyed this place.

Awesome mix of Indian and Mexican cuisine .....staff is very friendly and the drinks are strong. I visit every time I am in Houston.

Went here for lunch around 1pm. Restuarant is on the west side of Shepherd and easy to miss because the signage is not too conspicuous. There is ample parking and it was not too crowded. Inside, it was almost like a movie version of a British pub but very comfortable and spacious--there is also a small outside dining area for those so inclined. There is a reasonable but good quality selection of British beers and the menu, as often in Britain, showed strong Indian influence as well as offering traditional pub grub. The on-line menu did not completely reflect the actual offerings which were on offer. My curried lamb dish was excellent and the service was prompt, although the wait "person" was a lilttle snippy. Now that I know how to find it, rest assured I'll be back the next time I'm in Houston.

I've been here a couple of times now and will be going again tomorrow. I'm from England and when I want to feel like I'm at home this takes me back. Inside is really very similar to an English pub. The food and service are top notch , the only draw backs for me were the chips (fries) and Naan bread with the curry. The Naan just like everywhere is just like store bought stuff and the do try with the chips they are not quite to the standard we expect in England. Good try though guys.

This english pub-meets Indian/Texan fusion is a unique experience, certainly. And several of the Indian-insipired option are worth the visit. But the beer prices are a tad high. Located out of the main travel areas of Houston, one wonders if it's worth the trip to make the visit to the Red Lion Pub. The interior is nothing unusual, and the service capable but not outstanding. So, the only reason to go is to to try the unusual menu items. So, if you have a GPS and the time to visit, go. Otherwise, it's not worth the special effort to seek it out.

Stopped in the Red Lion Pub for lunch. Coming from the U. K. Some 20 years ago it was nice to find such a good replica of an authentic pub. The ambiance was great, staff very friendly and helpful. Menu covered most taste and the English selection was good. I choose the Scotch Egg dinner, ad would recommend this tasty sausage dish to anyone, the sausage us made in house and was great. It's a rarer find to have this item on the menu. My friends tried other items, one of which was the beef curry, I tasted this and it was one to get next time. They were revisiting and raved about the Fish and Chips and Cornish Pasty had last time. Portions were ample for the hungry person.... Loved the draught Strongbow cider, nice touch of England so far away. Must visit the loos when there and read the framed post cards what a hoot many great memories of the seaside came from these.... Thank you Red Lion.....

That's what my good UK friend said when I brought him here. Good pub food with even better Texan themed takes, such as chicken tandoori quesadillas. Featured in Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, Craig (owner) really knows how to create a cozy environment where you can shut out the world, sit next to a small fireplace and hold on to your cold pint and reminisce about your life.

Looking for a place to eat and drink that has an atmosphere different from the typical pub? If you like things that are unique and enjoy a place with a European flair, then you might want to consider a visit to the Red Lion British Pub. Walking into Red Lion for the first time, you will be greeted by an interior with a good deal of wood and, not surprisingly, the color red. The atmosphere has a distinctly European vibe, like one would expect for this type of pub. The fireplace adds a home- like ambiance as well. And the pictures on the walls, the lighting, etc. make you feel like you’re in friendly confines. With the food, Red Lion has a larger menu than that of the typical pub and it goes above and beyond the usual pub fare. You will find the common food options like burgers, wings, and quesadilla. But there is much more, including filet mignon, chicken masala, pork shank, pan seared cod, and more. Be prepared, however, for a slight case of sticker shock. The food and drink prices are higher here than what you find at most pubs. The quality is good, yes, but you pay the price. The beer selection at Red Lion is quite good. You will find about twenty beers on tap and another twenty in bottles. And there are many European options to be found among the beers, like Fuller’s, Newcastle, Belhaven, and others. If you would rather drink something else, don’t worry. They serve a large selection of Scotch whiskey and wine and with the full bar, they can mix up whatever drink you like. Specialty pubs are often memorable and Red Lion British Pub is certainly a memorable place to dine and drink. It is pricey, yes, but the food, service, and ability to find multiple European beers and Scotches in a single place make it worthwhile.

You have to try the chicken Tikka Mousakka. And the baked jalapeño spinach dip was awesome! Great selection of reasonably priced brews!

I went with a friend for lunch and found it delightful. Lunch was less crowded than dinner. I have also gone for dinner. I enjoyed the lunch ambience better. What I really like about this place is the creativity with the menu. I had the tandoori chicken quesadillas and my friend had the tandoori chicken enchiladas. Both were amazing. We were swapping samples with each other. I liked how they made my quesadilla with nan bread instead of tortillas. Very creative. Service was great. A little bit of London just south of River Oaks. I highly recommend it.

The food is good except for the salads. I've passed on eating here many times because they are so overpriced. But what really did me in was the fact that they charged me an additional 3% for paying by credit card and it was neither posted at the entrance, on the menu or disclosed to me by the waitstaff. I eat out more than I do in, and no restaurant has ever done this to me.

Favorites include tandoori quesadillas and tikka masala. Good selection of UK ales. Friendly staff.

fish and chips are best in Houston! And other places across the US that we visit on vacation. Also, except on Friday nights when fish and chips are the special, you can sub the fries and peas for other fresh veggies such as asparagus, sauted spincah, or others. Not many places give you these options any more! We go as often as we can and it is an hour from where we live!

Ashley, the bartender was friendly and the restaurant inside was very "pub-like". The menu is a hoot, a real take off on English fare. We would go back again.

We got the fish and chips and the tandoori chicken quesadilla. Then we ask the server what the Tiki Marsala was like she brought us a sample and it was so good! We both know what we are getting when we come back!!

We love the Red Lion Pub and go there quite often. My husband is from England and he loves it as well. The beer selection is very good and we like the food. My husband loves the fish and chips and he is very picky about that dish. I typically eat a healthier choice of their chicken or scallops and I like both. Stop by and have a pint! You'll enjoy it.

I saw this place on diners,drive-ins and dives and have been waiting to eat there. Last night my wife and I were at the Houston zoo Christmas lights and she told me she wanted to go to a pub well I had just the place. We were not disappointed at all! The food is not what I'm use to eating and looking around makes me want to try everything on the menu and I plan on trying over time. The portions looked big so we ordered one dish and our waitress had it separated on two plates for us and we didn't even ask she was very nice. Looking forward to our next visit witch will be in a few days. I will be brining friends and family on future visits.

Once in while you find something that just knocks your socks off!! That’s what happened tonight. Not one person in our party had any complaints, other than they ate too much!! Thank you guys for a wonderful night!!

i had been looking forward to going to this restaurant, we ordered appeitizers (egg rolls) which were really good, but thats pretty much where it ended, i ordered the fish and it was falling apart, and overly greasy the fries seemed old. and my friends food, - bangers and mash, was not any better.

Stopped by for a quick lunch (shepherd's pie) recently. It was bloody awful, and the owners have a nerve charging $14 for a mess on a plate. Very disappointing - I really wanted some home comfort food.

Imagine my surprise finding an outside warm fire on a cold winter night on Christmas Eve after looking at all the Xmas lights. It happened to be a Monday and Monday is Hamburger night at the Red Lion. I had come for the Shepards Pie but those hamburgers being served around me pushed me into the night's special adding the Stilton Cheese to celebrate the holiday. Service was good with an English accent and the whole experience was special, Inside dining is very English Pub like and there is obviously a faithful following that come regularly to this pub. Each day has a special and since the hamburger special was so delightful, I feel I should return on a different day and try them all!

Stopped in on a Saturday. The atmosphere was very close to the pubs I have visited in England except for the accents. The service was quick and friendly. The fish and chips were crisp and very tasty. An enjoyable lunch and a good view of the soccer game on the many TV available.

I don't why I am cutting off a star honestly but a 5 I will save for those perfect ones. After having a misadventure and ending up a sad lousy pub on Saturday night my hubby took me here. WOw! so glad we did. Loved their take on Chicken Tikka Masala for 2 days:P ! Nice ambiance too, all woody woody. We were expecting it to be crowded but to our pleasant surprise, at 10 on a Saturday Night the place was rather scanty. Maybe that's why I cut a point. Would definitely go back:)

This place has a great atmosphere and great food. They do regular english pub food and excellent fusion bar fare! Happy hour is pretty good just get there early.

They open at 11a, we arrived 11:10, and were told the kitchen doesn't 'open' until 11:30. This made no sense to me-you mean they won't even start preparing my order until then? Right. Ok. We ordered our drinks, reviewed the menu, placed our order for food and appetizer at the same time. The place is decorated in the spirit of a British pub, looks nice. It was a little while but the artichoke dip finally showed up-with my friend's meal. Not mine, just hers-with the appetizer. Brilliant. I waited.. waited..it was probably 10 min before I was updated that my shepherd's pie would be out shortly. All totaled it was about 20 minutes after my friend got her meal. Daft. There seemed to be one waitress and a bartender-don't know if someone was late today, or that's the way it always is. There were other customers, but not crazy busy. We had to try a couple of times to flag the waitress down for our check. The food was good but I'd probably pick another place next time.

So I picked this place because it was on DDD. My husband was always saying how he wanted to try some of these places. So we headed to Houston for the weekend and had a late lunch here. He had the Chicken Tikka Masala. I had the Baked Chicken Tandoori Quesadillas. All my husband had to say was Fanfreakingtastic. (Pretty sure this is a technical term). I loved the Indian flare in the Quesadillas. They where wonderful. We even managed to have dessert. The bread pudding. Which was a perfect ending to our meal. I know it is not normal English fare. But it was a refreshing change from BBQ or Mexican. Highly recommend this place.

I have to give a 5 out of 5. It’s the only US “British pub” I have been to that looks and feels authentic. A nice selection of properly kept draft beers including Spitfire and London Pride. Plus $5 burger and fries lunch special on Mondays. Top notch.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Houston! The tiki chicken Marsala is amazing. The staff is very nice for the most part, waitresses- we've had good and bad but that's anywhere I think. The outdoor patio is my favorite and very clean.

First, I have to say this place has the most 'interesting' menu for a pub - at least not typical. It has the standards... Fish & Chips, Shepherds Pie, Bangers and Mash, burgers, etc... but they also have Punjabi Egg Rolls, Thai Fish Soup, Tandoori Chicken Enchilada (very good), and Chicken Tikka Masala. There is like an Asian, Mexican, Indian fusion in many of the dishes. The beer list is adequate, if not a little boring (this is not a brew pub), but they have enough to make most beer lovers happy. A 20 oz. Imperial Pint is going to cost you about $7, so not the best prices. Meals at lunch time are reasonable (<$10). For dinner, expect to pay over $15 a person just for your entree. All in all, this is a great place to hang out while in Houston.

We tried 2 dishes. The fish and chips and the chicken tikka masala. Tikka Masala was top notch. You will be hard pressed to find better. Fish and chips was very good.

Really enjoyed this place. It has everything I want in a Pub- great food, tasty beer, pretty waitresses, and awesome music playing. Would love to go back when I'm in Houston again.

I have eaten lunch here and the service was good, the food an interesting mix of pub, Indian, and TexMex. I decided to try them for dinner on a Saturday night, we waited for over 10 minutes before we were acknowledged by anyone, and it go worse as time went on. We sat at a small counter next to the bar, and waited for about 30 more minutes at which point we were told there were two parties ahead of us. We watched three more parties seated, and when the next table became available a group that had just walked in was seated there. So we had to wait about 10 more minutes to get seated. All together it took an hour to get seated and in a city like Houston with thousands of dining options this was really disappointing, and something I almost never do, and probably won’t again. Our server was moderately attentive, but when my wife’s “plain’ cheeseburger came it was so plain it had no cheese? Back to the kitchen it went for another 5 minute wait. I ordered the fish and chips thinking that any worthy pub would be able to do that well, but not so. It was just okay and had some spice added that pretty much negated the real pub type of fish I used to enjoy in England. Final thoughts; if you go there off hours you’ll probably be fine, but when it’s busy don’t expect much unless you just want to hang at the bar. It’s a decent place for lunch, the bar is well stocked and the overall ambiance is really nice. It was nicely decorated for the holiday.

I recently had dinner at the Red Lion Pub with a business colleague. The atmosphere was nice, the service friendly and the food exceptionally good.

If you want to have a great dining experience, try the Red Lion in Houston. We had several of the dishes and all were delicious. The chicken tikka masala was outstanding, though. The libations were very good and the chocolate martini was one of the best ever. The service (we happened to have a super star named Dawn) was as good or better than I have ever experienced. This is a place that you will not forget. We did not try them, but Dawn told us that the chicken tandori enchiladas were very good. That will be on our next visit. The portions were large, actually enough for 2 to share if they are not extremely hungry. Give it a try.

We love the fish and chips here. The fish is fresh and delicious and I love the lemony tartar sauce. The food and service are great, and the wait staff is friendly. Our food was served quickly. And the iced tea was fresh and good.

Red Lion is a great pub. Serves British food pub style.

My family and I went for dinner and drinks. The food was excellent with An Indian favored and inspiring twist on some good English entrees. The shepherds pie was excellent! Good selection of beers and comfortable bar environment.

Walked in with my boyfriend. Were greeted at the door by the Red Lion owner along with his extremely intoxicated friend, Mick. Mick proceeded to follow us to our table and told me he wanted to lick me all over. My boyfriend objected. The owner did nothing when made aware. Needless to say will not be returning.

i have been going to this place for a long time, and the food is yet to disappoint. The service on the other hand is a different topic altogether. Each time i visit the service seems to drop a bit. If you want decent service, i would recommend sitting at the bar. The service there is prompt. Tandoori chicken quesadilla is fantastic and absolute must try. I have convinced random strangers to try that while sitting at bar, and they were not disappointed. The lamb keema is also quite good. Even though the service continues to disappoint, the food is still worth going there.

Great British pub atmosphere and a fantastic menu with a variety of traditional English dishes and more than 7 curries to choose from. Bonus: the neighborhood has some great architecture!

My husband and I loved this place. The food is unique and oh, so delicious! We will definitely be going back!

I've been to London twice, and this joint is authentic! We had a couple pints and then shared the chicken Punjabi eggrolls and a Cornish pasty. Everything was good. Great atmosphere! I almost expected to walk out onto a cobblestone street instead of a busy Houston street! Will definitely revisit.

Although it was a nice day to sit on the patio, the service was lacking. Our drinks were rarely re-filled and the time between the drink order and the food order was exceptionally long. I got the fish and chips. Nothing to write home about.

in england, it was difficult for me to get used to not being treated very well by bartenders, wait staff, etc. it's just how pubs go. but this is texas. i didn't feel welcome and the food was definitely not up to english par. i won't be back. pity.

We first went to the Red Lion years ago after seeing it featured on Diners, Drive inns, and Dives. We have been fans ever since. Last night, we sat on the outdoor patio eating excellent fish and chips and chicken skewers. The Tandori chicken quesadillas are always good. Wednesday night curries are a hit. Large tap beer selection (they also have a full bar and decent wine selection), good food, and friendly staff keep us coming back.

Love eating at the bar in this place. Great selection of beers and one of the best fish and chips I got outside the UK! Also the shepherd's pie is not bad!

This is an English Pub setting. We have been here several times, my husband likes the beer selection. As for the food, we go for the chicken tiki marsalla, it is the best in the area. We have tried some of the typical English food offered on the menu and yeah, it is just Ok. Fish and chips too greasy and crust was soggy and shepherds pie is just ok. They have a couple of interesting appetizers on the menu.

Sure it rains heaps in the UK and sometimes you get a grumpy gloomy bartender that would rather be home in bed. But we are in Sunny Houston and its 72 degrees today, a nice break from the 90's. So why is the grump so grumpy?? Not a nice first impression throwing one menu at two people that ask to see it. "So how are your Bloody Mary's today, Luv?" I asked hoping to share my smile with her.... "Okay, I guess" she answered "we don't use a mix, if that what you mean." So we venture towards a Bloody Mary, spicy for me , a little less for my companion. That poor lonely little olive at the end of my 6" straw must have felt quite singled out of the bunch when it was strung up. Oh wait, what else is that? oh, a thin slice of lemon to keep it company. What a failed attempt at a garnish, I mean leave it out, it would have been better. Perhaps they should consider using a mix , It may improve the flavor and the chances of getting it right. Teach the barmen how to prepare a proper cocktail, or don't offer them please. We had the signature dish, Fish and Chips. Very small portions of Fish with wimpy batter. Cold Chips and peas to boot. Total bad experience for us. And ta think I had ta dole out $40. on this rubbish. And excuse me, if you are gonna write a review and use the words pretty good or bland do not, please do not give it 4 stars.

Before going to a Houston Astros game we stopped out here to eat. I ordered the Fish n Chips with mushy peas. The Cod was huge, thick and flaky. I came to find out the owners are from London, England and have everything on the menu authentic to Britain. Absolutely the best Fish n Chips since our trip to England years ago. My wife had the curry and just loved it as well. The bar had hard to find beer's and it was absolutely packed so get there early. Will go again soon.

Great atmosphere in a comfortable pub. Good attentive service and traditional British menu which is very reasonable. Good selectin of curries. Wine list is a little pricey.

Literally the worst service ever. Showed up to watch the Liverpool v Arsenal game and sat down. All wait staff constantly walked past me even though I tried to constantly make eye contact. I finally was able to flag down a waiter 15 mins into the game. However, then they never came back to take my order. There were several others that sat down way after me and were given menus and then drinks within 5-10 mins. At half time finally found the manager, when I pointed it out, he then had the gaul to blame me for not ordering at the bar (most of the time I looked at the bar, no one was there). Never thrown down the race card, and maybe it was random bad luck, but either way I won’t be back.

Oh my goodness, blew me away! Absolutely loved it. I read about it on Reddit, and had to come try it out. Definitely will be back to have more.

I had to return a soggy fish and chips and the second one they brought was just as soggy - and a pub should know how to make decent fish and chips. So that's a strike against it. But most of the food I've had is good, and very generous portions, and the ambience is about as close to a real English Pub as you can get in Houston, other than the Black Lab.

Great location and to get away from the glitz of river oaks its perfect....Staff are great and a good selection of beers and traditional gourmet pub grub...worth a visit or two...

We stopped by for Thursday steak night. Absolutely delicious filet mignon cooked to perfection with a reduction sauce and mushrooms. The mash with bleu cheese and bacon is a tasty side as well as peas or asparagus, both are cooked properly. Interesting edible garnish included too. Service is bland and uncaring. No one checks on you after served and you have to ask for water or another drink. Not sure what the waitstaff does if this is not their top priority.

I can't rave enough about this place. I have been a half dozen times in the last year and haven't been disappointed yet. The samosas, beef vindaloo, and fish and chips never disappoint me and they have a nice selection of beers. It gets really crowded so expect a wait at prime times. Parking can be a little tight but it is definitely worth the trouble. I am getting hungry just thinking about the place!

My wife and I came to this location with high hopes for great food and better beer. Sadly, we only got good beer. I ordered the Shepherds Pie, when I got it, honestly I was excited, but sadly, it was under seasoned. My wife ordered Fish and Chips, which should be a staple, but the fish was not prepared right, and it was really greasy. My wife picked it up and we could see the oil dropping off of the fish. So to say the food was not good is an understatement. To be positive, the service was fast and friendly, and the beer was good. I want to come back and try some of their other food, and hopefully I will find something worthwhile on their menu.

Had to stop here for their CHICKEN TIKKA after seeing them on Triple-D (Foot Network) .. .. I had it all over the UK, but the TIKKA here was better .. .. yummmmm .. .. And, there was so much, I had to take it home .. .. If the weather is nice, dine outside!! ;)))

First time eating at the Red Lion Pub. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the place. Great booth seating and private enough to hold a great conversation. Food was very good. We had the Tandoori Chicken Enchilada and the Tandoori Chicken Quesadilla.

We saw the pub featured on a repeat of a Food Network show and went there the next day for lunch. The decor and atmosphere are spot on for an authentic London pub. Our server took time to answer questions for us before we ordered. Loved everything we ordered from the appetizer, including the entrees, and ending with dessert. We will definitely return for more amazing food!

i have visited roughly 100 Diners Driveins and Dives locations. Often great food and always an adventure. The Red Lion is not to be missed! But it's easy to miss if you don't know where it is. Set back behind some trees, the only sign is the red lion symbol itself. The beer menu is extensive with lots of draft beer choices at $7 per pint. The Harp and Smithwick's we ordered were ice old and tasty. The lamb Shepherd's Pie and the Chicken Tikka Masala were both excellent (they are the items featured on the Triple D episode). Extra marks for the very clean restrooms and overall cleanliness. Not a dive!

Always fun to visit the Red Lion. Great atmosphere and interesting menu selections. Ordered the fish and chip (again) and (again) not disappointed. Bar service excellent with just enough attention and privacy.

Brother & sister in law over from UK for Christmas so we took them here for Xmas dinner. Turkey and all the trimmings not bad. Rest of us had fish n chips so so. Nice atmosphere. We were outside with the gas warmer in the middle of the table. Around $100 inclusive drinks for 4.

The Red Lion is consistently on our radar as a good dining experience within walking distance of our home. Typically, the service is somewhat slow - but always cheerful - and the food excellent. Not so for our latest Saturday lunch experience. . . We ordered Baked Chicken Tandoori Quesadillas and Mini Cheese Burgers. The former was wonderful, the latter almost inedible. The fries were soggy and the burgers - without any cheese - had obviously been prepared some time before and left to shrivel under a heat lamp into a hard, dry, chewey mess. On a bright note, the service was, as usual, cheery.

We love going here for dinner. My husband is British so that says something. He loves the fish and chips. The service staff is excellent. The only criticism we have is that the music is quite load and makes it hard to talk.

good chicken tikka masala!

Do you ever wish you were enjoying the food and atmosphere of an real English pub? Well there's no need to fly across the pond to experience that. Just visit the Red Lion Pub in Houston, TX. Their fish & chips will have you thinking you're in Merry Olde England. The cod fillets are fried in a delicious light batter and will have you coming back for more. You will find a good selection of typical pub food, such as Shepherd's Pie and Bangers and Mash, but there are also some different favorites, such as Chicken Tikki Masala. There is an excellent selection of beer and the desserts should not be misses, especially the Chocolate Mousse and the bread pudding. Service is very good. For a real change of atmosphere in Houston, I highly recommend a visit to the Red Lion.

Four of us were out and about, we stopped in for drinks. We were not disappointed, great beer selection. We all tried different drinks and enjoyed the atmosphere. We will all definitely be back!

Great selection of beers. Atmosphere 1970s pub. Fish n chips and the eclectic like. Friendly fun place. You will enjoy. Very popular.

I've been coming here for years now and this is the best pub in Houston. Food is top notch. Service is top notch. And the beer is just as good. I've tried going to other pubs in Houston but nothing compares. The restaurant has a warm, cozy environment to enjoy a pint. For food, I'd highly recommend the fish & chips and sausage rolls.

Usual great bar service. Had the cornish pastry and it was excellent. Way too much but can live with that. Always a keeper.

If I could have, I would have given another 1/2 star. It was good, just not sure I would return. Fun atmosphere and decor (think Epcot) but I'm not a beer drinker and that is the focus of this establishment. I was in the mood for fish and chips and 2 family members came along. They ordered chicken tikka masala and shepard's pie. On the pricey side but both were excellent. Lots of flavor and generous portions. I enjoyed my fish and chips but my dining companions thought it lacked flavor. Overall, an enjoyable evening.

Went with a friend for a few drinks after work. I had never been and was pleasantly surprised. Our drinks were delicious and beautifully garnished. After sitting there for a while enjoying the patio, we ordered a cheese plate that had a variety of cheese and accompaniments. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we lingered and put off a meeting to stay and order dinner that was absolutely delicious. Definitely, will return.

I saw it on DD&D and realized it was just a couple blocks from my house. I love trying new places so I went with my sister and thankfully not my hard of hearing mother. The restaurant was so loud that even the two of us with great hearing could barely understand each other! I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala and it did not disappoint. It was just spicy enough without being inedible. It definitely has a pub feel and sometimes that can be fun. I just think I would rather sit outside next time so I can hear the people I am with.

Travelled a long way to eat here after watching an old triple d but to be honest was disappointed. Arrived and managed to get a seat at the bar which was I think where my experience was spoilt - our server was probably the most incompetent I have ever experienced ......and I lived in the Middle East for 10 years ! She seemed incapable of remembering anything and had to ask everything three times and still messed it up. Shortish curly haired slow talker best avoided. I came for the chicken tika masalla which was a really great curry but just not the dish as I would have expected it so good food but terrible service was my experience. Rob

My family decided to have lunch there a week ago. We planned to meet our son on Sunday to have a farewell lunch with him as he's going overseas. We checked ALL the online sites for hours of operation, including the Red Lion Pubs website. Every one of them said they opened on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. When we arrived the sign on the building said 11:30. So I called and they also said 11:30. Another family pulled up just after us, and got out of the car to go in and saw the same thing and went back to their car. Needless to say we were all extremely disappointed, especially as we had driven 35 minutes to get there. Maybe someone should get online and change the hours...just a thought.

I ordered the Fish & Chips and my wife ordered the Tandori Chicken Quesadilla. We both were pleased with our selections. The chicken was spicy and delicious served between two pieces of grilled naan. My fish was tasty but was slightly greasy....maybe that is why I thought it was very tasty! We are going back with a group in a few weeks which is a recommendation in itself.

Came here for lunch and almost nobody was there. Gets crowded in the evenings and on the weekends. Weekday lunch was quick and tasty. Generous portion sizes. Some of the food seemed overpriced. The food was good, but I think overall its priced on the high side. Chicken tikka masala was delicious.

For the past 7/8 years we have been getting together to celebrate the holidays before everyone gets too busy with family or holiday travels. This year we had a healthy turnout of approximately 30/32 family and friends. The Red Lion usually reserves the room at the back of the pub for us. It's like our private area. No one had to wait to be seated because we were all accommodated in the one room. The food was great as always and the service excellent. I think this might be our best year yet!! Thank you Red Lion for making our evening so enjoyable.

Went to the Red Lion Pub around 6pm on a Saturday evening. We ordered the Baked Chicken Tandoori Quesadillas which were really good! The order came with two dipping condiments, one was yogurt based and the other was ginger. The quesadillas had a nice spice to them, and were very flavorful. For our entree, my wife ordered the Fish and Chips and I had the Chicken Tikka Masala. The quantity was more than enough, I finished my bowl and was very full! If you order an appetizer, be cautious because there was alot of food. My Tikka Masala was the best I have ever had!! Regarding the service, our waitress appeared very infrequently. Except for when she was delivering an order to our table, we had to stop her instead of her stopping by on her own. We enjoying visiting restaurants that we see on food shows on television. Would definitely go back for the food.

The first time I walked into this place, it immediately reminded me of the pubs I visited in London years ago. Went there last Monday and loved that old fashion Christmas decoration. Great classic pub food like shepherd's pie, bangers and mash, and sausage rolls. This is one of the very few places I know which serve fish and chips with fresh green peas as in London. And yes, accompanied by malt vinegar instead of catchup. It also serves steak and burger, and several Indian dishes, the most popular ethnic food over there. Good choices of beer on tap, including my favorites Guinness and Boddingtons. If you like Scotch whisky, quite a few for you to try. By the way, this place is crowded when major soccer games are shown on TV.

App: Sausage Rolls, $12 for two pastry wrapped logs of sausage meat the size of hot dogs. Main Courses: Fish and Chips with veg, and Cornish Pastie with salad, both $16. Desert: Butterscotch & Toffee Bread Pudding $8 Summary: Restaurant seems devoid of food safety and quality, and it is reflected in what is served. There is no management on site on a busy Saturday night and the only option is being given a business card for the owner... For the price, quality, and total lack of concern... avoid at any and all costs. Some true brits who admit after their first and only experience eating at the Red Lion, now only drink there. They suggested Sherlock's. While eatable, the meat for the sausage rolls was inconsistent in flavor and texture. The garnish of lettuce, sliced onions and tomato were disgusting. The tomato slices had a matte white foreign substance on them which resembled mold and the rings of onions had brown spots. Additionally, the jar of Coleman's Mustard that was brought to the table, when opened had a putrid smell. This was brought to the attention of the server who stated "That's the way it smells", I corrected her as I have had Coleman's before and explained that most likely someone had double dipped their knife and the specks in it were putrefied food bits. I asked that she either bring an unopened jar or at least another jar. When she returned, it had a different cap but the mark above the expiration date I had made was still there. She had brought back the same jar and said it was a different one. Upon her retrieval of the appetizer plate, she was informed of the disgusting nature of the garnish. Without apology, she simply stated she would "let them know". We then waited another 20 minutes for our entrees. When they arrived, the fish and chips were soaked in oil, such that the glistened and left puddles on the plate. It took four napkins and patting the fish to remove enough oil to at least become visually appealing. However the batter had absorbed enough oil to fall off the fish into a pile of mush. The salad, had mushy rotten pieces of lettuce, not simply brown edges but degrading into a sticky slime. The cucumbers were dry, browning and like the tomato had a white substance on them. The Cornish Pastie was pasty, like school paste. The filling was overly seasoned to the extend that it masked the flavors of the meat, vegetables and potato inside. We waited for the server to return and after being ignored by every server we gave in and consumed the Cornish Pastie. After 15 minutes, the waitress returned to see how our food was. The disgusting nature of the salad as well as the oil soaked fish and the doughy pastie was brought to her attention, again her reply was that she would "let them know". I then asked her to bring a manager over to speak with us, we were told there was no manager. Apparently the owner is the only person in charge, and not there on a busy Saturday evening. In the end, while I cannot call it redeeming, the Butterscotch & Toffee Bread Pudding was a highlight in an an otherwise dismal and disgusting meal. It resembled an cloyingly sweet loose custard and I would have preferred slightly less custardy and a little more bread for substance as the entire thing looses cohesion under its own weight and heat. I the end, the cook came out and had some adjustments made to the bill however I will say that without management on site and such low quality food, this place is to be avoided. For the review, I have provided a collage of photos from the dinner, not so much of the dishes as the disgusting things we found.

Went for a pint & fish & chips and it was terrible. The batter was soggy and the chips were saturated in oil. Either get a chef that can cook fish & chips or take it off the menu.

We eat here annually during the holidays to enjoy fish & chips and chicken pot pie. This year's visit didn't overwhelm us so may not be back. It's in a very popular area of town and draws a good crowd. Service was just ok but not stellar. Pricey for lunch.

We got a table for 7 people right away, and they got good food and great selection of beer. Rather small parking lot.

This is a British pub. Dark, noisy, no AC tonight, but was told it is an exception. Got a boddingtons beer while waiting for ToGo order. Tikka Masala was good, but different than usual. I thought I tasted cinnamon or all spice, but others said it was probably cumin. They have a wide variety of food choices including burgers and fish and chips. My Houston friend really likes this place.

Nice little drinking spot, not to far from the galleria. Lots of tvs to watch sporting events and has a nice little outdoor space. The food is good even for English food, the Scottish egg was removed from the menu and that was my favorite item. I did have the bangers and mash and that wasn't too bad. I enjoy going here all the time.

I had a chicken curry, which was so salty that I almost panicked when I took my 1st bite. Everyone at our table was disappointed with their food. Queen Vic does a better job...

We had a late show downtown and very few places were open by the time we got out (11 PM) Red Lion serves an abbreviated menu after 10:30 with their best dishes on it. We had the tandorri chicken quesadilla and the spicy wings. They were both very well flavored and hit the spot. Great beer selection also.

Great appetizers. Pork fingers are out of this world. The sausage roll - delightful, baked chicken tandoori quesadillas - holy smokes, punjabi egg rolls - outstanding. If you are there with friends, order all apps and share - more than filling and you get to try more than just one plate.

It's been a year or two since I've eaten at the Red Lion but made a point to go back. They have authentic fish and chips with peas. The entire meal was great and worth fighting the traffic to get there. Bar tender also know proper way to pour a Guinness. Been awhile but glad I made it back.

I keep telling myself that it was just a bad night for the pub, but I now have to accept the fact that the Red Lion ain't what she used to be. Average food, loud atmosphere, and surly service....this is not a neighborhood pub. This feels like a break up.

It was really good shepherd pie. Indian food is delicious very good too. Save room for the best bread pudding in Texas. Service was a little slow considering that it wasn't crowded. I didn't see any vegetarian or gluten free options on the menu

Our server acted like she was doing us a favor when she came over after 10 minutes. My beer pint had lipstick on it. Had to send the silverware back twice because it was dirty. Then our food was cold. Never again. Was the review I put on FB. I'm in Houston on a business trip. Not sure what my political affiliation has to do with anything and it kind of creeps me out that they stalked my social media when they don't even know me. See photo. Weird and creepy.

Came here on a recommendation from a Facebook friend and it live up to the hype. Neighborhood English pub, with great selection of beers and the food was amazing(which I was shocked). I sat at the bar, because I was by myself for work and they had a special bar happy hour menu and I had the punjaby egg rolls and scottish egg, with blue cheese and bacon mashed potatoes. It all was really good, the egg rolls had a nice spicy sauce with it, but the main meal was amazing, just needed a little salt and pepper and took it over the top. I think the owner was there as well and he seemed like a really nice guy and very accommodating to everyone that came up to him. If you're in Houston check this place out.

Nice beer selection as you would expect. I liked the atmosphere. Menu had a nice variety of options. Portions here were huge, too large. Unless you plan to take quite a bit home, there is no need for portions this size. But the food was very good, everything we ordered was pretty tasty. The service was generally fine until it was time to pay the bill. The waitress brought the check, but did not come back for over 15 minutes to see if we were ready to pay. I finally had to go find her and give her the check at which point she seemed annoyed at me. Not sure what happened there. I'd come back and give it a second try, but change how I ordered based on the portion sizes.

This place is always consistently excellent! New items on the menu. We tried the pork belly and scallops and EXCELLENT! Chicken tikka masala always good.

By far my favorite British Pub in town! Great food, great beer- what more could you want. Also, totally dig the sun-thurs specials.

In town for a concert and saw this place on the Food Network. We had the Monte Cristo and best one have had in years. Had a couple of draft beers and real nice place to hang out. Very diverse menu with lots of options.

Decent British food. Fun atmosphere. Staff was friendly but very, very inattentive. Food came out relatively quickly but the tikka masala wasn’t hot. Would visit again if I needed to scratch the itch.

They do a great traditional Sunday lunch. Only negative is food could be slightly hotter. Bar is a friendly atmosphere and welcoming to all. Staff generally are a+

I go to England often and have been to my share of Pubs. This Pub looks almost exactly like an older middle class British pub. Impressive! Caprese salad was well presented, and the Fish & Chips were delicious. Peas were fresh, fries and fish were cooked well. Fries weren't "proper" thick hand cut chips, but still had a good flavor. Restaurant and bathroom was clean. Service friendly and attentive.

Went to the Red Lion on Shepherd for a pint and some lunch. Nice selection of beer on tap, and the food was good. We tried the Fisherman's Pie & Fish and Chips--both were great, as was the beer. The service was friendly and timely. Only draw back was the temperature in the restaurant--way too cold.

Red Lion has the best home cooked food. You must try the Chicken Tikka, but be ready for some spice. I enjoy my food spicy so it was absolutely perfect. The portion is large, so you can ask for a half portion or split it with a friend. Another favorite is the chicken skewers…an appetizer…but enough to serve two or three people. Just check it out! You will not be sorry.

On a warm springtime evening, we saw this pub on South Shepherd Drive and excitedly thought we’d try it out. Onsite parking out back was scarce, but we managed to squeeze into an open space. The outdoor patio was packed, so we ventured inside. Seating was hard to find, so we stood around about 15 minutes until a table opened up. While waiting for a table, we took turns with trips to the gents’ and ladies’ privies and found them both clean and tidy. The visuals of the pub’s dark woodwork and nostalgic British décor clashed with scents of the pub menu’s spicier Indian aromas. For a British-style pub, this one had a particularly pathetic selection of British ales and only one Irish stout. We settled for draughts of Belhaven and Newcastle — priced exorbitantly at $7 each — and headed out to dinner elsewhere.

We have been going to the Red Lion for steak night on Thursdays. While the food has always been delicious, the service is always slow, lax and uncaring. This past week will be our last visit. The steak tasted old and it was stringy. The usually fresh asparagus was tough and stringy. The blue cheese and bacon mashed potatoes didn't have a hint of either ingredient. New chef? Old food? Our waitress couldn't get anything right but she did not write down a thing. Had to ask for water several times. Never a refill or a check in with us. After we were finished eating, our waitress and other waitresses passed our table multiple times and no one removed our dishes. They have a new menu with price increases, but they should increase the service before implementing a price increase.

Visiting Houston for the weekend and found this place on Diners Drive Ins and Dives. The menu provides great options. All 3 of us in our group had something different and were very pleased! The portion sizes are HUGE. Service was ok and the environment was great.

I am not a fan of Indian food. But my partner is so this seemed like a great place to go for a compromise. She could get her curry fix and I could get a nice Irish stout and sliders. So you won't see me writing anything about the Indian food in this review. The non-Indian food though is just okay. The french fries are really good. The mussels were tasty. The slider meat was tough to chew but the bread was soft and flavorful. The fish and chips are greasy. The salads are very fresh - the Vinaigrette is really good. I will agree with many other reviewers here - they are quite proud of their food and the prices reflect that. So why the 4 stars: I could sit and drink their terrific beer selection or enjoy the decent Scotch selection the bar has. But after I eat somewhere else. They often have seasonal and interesting choices for micro and imported beers. I wish the waitstaff was a bit more knowledgable of the beers. But I go to the Gingerman for that. Parking can be a pain during peak hours and there's really no where to wait for a table when you have to wait.

There's really two parts to the Red Lion - the restaurant, which has become enormously successful because of its appearance on Food Network, and because the whole place does have a wonderful cozy traditional British atmosphere. The food and the service can be spotty, and it's hit or miss depending on the time of day you go how long the wait will be for a table. Some people swear by their Fish & Chips and Tika Masala, I think their over-hyped. The bar at the Red Lion, has a true authentic Brit pub feel and attracts it's fair share of Europeans. It is designed for middle-aged (or older) professional men, and if you're one of them you'll probably enjoy it, as long as you act deferentially enough to the regulars. On the other hand, women (older, younger, professional or unprofessional) that aren't part of a couple aren't really welcome at it, at all. With the exception of the waitresses - it's a boys club - and they (including the waitresses) want to keep it that way. So, if you're a middle-aged guy looking to hang out w/ some other guys in a nice, traditional pub this is your place. If you're a group just looking for a nice meal - this place is okay IF you hit it at the right time and get the right server. Food seems pricey - but the servings are gargantuan! You can ask for a half order on just about anything to get a normal sized and priced meal.

Ok beer selection, service was excellent, very friendly. Had the curry wednesday deal. Pretty good, had a good time. The vindaloo is very spicy, too spicy to really enjoy, masks any flavor that may have been there. The sausage rolls were very good!

Had a giggle reading a review by a "disappointed Brit" who complained about the Red Lion food. Made me laugh. Meanwhile, I enjoyed a great late lunch on Saturday. A full plate of all the great things my GP warned me against and, of course each part of the puzzle was well prepared and tasted great. Beer was spot on and I left very satisfied, as usual. Great serving crew and smiling faces all round. Definitely a keeper even if one Brit food connoisseur (?) doesn't agree.

Wow~ it was so good! Our first time there tonight after seeing it on the food network show. We had spanich dip and chicken quesadillas, and lamb Keenan, and chicken masala. The food came out hot, fresh and flavorful. Our waitress was great and attentive. Great place!

Authentic British Sunday Roast on offer at this English Pub in Houston! Our roast beef - one medium rare, one medium well - were done to our liking, the "roasties", English peas, turnips, mashed potato, and Yorkshire Pudding were rich and savory. Our server "Miguel" was attentive and courteous. A sticky toffee pudding, large enough for two to share, rounded off the meal. Excellent value for money.
Best fish and chips in Houston
Best fish and chips I have had so far in Houston. Light crispy batter with moist form fish inside. Rustic Chips were firm but fluffy inside. Only downside was no mushy peas, but the garden peas were very tasty. Staff were attentive and friendly. Kept coming around to see if I was ok. Visited on a Friday night around 8pm. Bar was busy with many people availing of the $14 fish and chip special. They do a special each weekday night. There curry dishes looked very appealing, will have to come back and try.
