I love this place! Amazing food, great service and good location! They have really good appetizers. I love there lunch specials for $8.00. It is close to the hospital and definitely beats their food.

Located on trendy NW23rd Av, it looks like a poor relative of some of the fancier places in the neighbourhood but don't let that put you off. This was the best Thai food I've had for a long time. The jumbo prawn Penang curry was amazing and it's all reasonably priced (starters, mains and drinks for two = less than 50 bucks).

There are plenty of restaurants on NW 23rd Avenue, but when you have dietary restrictions and can't have dairy, Thai food is always a good option, so we ended up at Red Onion. The atmosphere is very casual and the lay-out of the restaurant is very open, with plenty of space in between tables. A bit noisy because of the slate floor, but very comfortable. The service is attentive, but certainly not over bearing. And than there is the food..... Outstanding quality and the portions are a good size. Typically in Thai restaurants the portions are relatively small, but at Red Onion, be sure to bring a good appetite. Authentic, good flavred food. It was so good we came back the next day!

Was looking for a restaurants with gluten free dining and noticed Red Onion directly in front of where we were. Decided to give it a try and were very pleased and satisfied. All meals could be prepared gluten-free. We ordered Chicken Pad Thai, Tofu Pad Thai and Pineapple Fried Rice. Meals were delicious and the portions were large enough for sharing. Would definetly recommend this restaurant is we're ever back in the Portland area. By the way, the service was excellent and very attentive. We made a good choice.......................!

We ate dinner here because the reviews were decent. We were quickly seated and within 3 or 4 minutes were asked what we wanted. I hadn't even picked my menu up yet. 5 or minutes later we ordered. My cashew chicken was absolutely perfect, my wife soup was perfect and my daughter liked her pad thai. After the food came out, we were ignored. I even had to go to the front counter and ask for the check. We were so ignored, they didn't recognize me or know what table I was at for the bill. The place was less than half occupied. I told her we needed a box to go and she handed it to me without acknowledging they had ignored us. I had originally decided that this was a good solid five star place, but with poor service went down to a one. I can make a 5 star meal at home and serve myself for less than coming here. The staff needs to stop laughing, giggling and socializing with each other and take care of the customer.

Portland is blessed with a lot of good Thai restaurants, and this is one of the best. What makes it stand out in addition to its consistent high quality is that it has dishes few, if any, other Thai places offer. They have some especially tasty special seafood and salmon dishes that are almost impossible to bypass. Parking can be a minor issue, but it is very near a Portland Streetcar stop.

The food was more interestingly composed and presented than at many Thai restaurants. The Pad Thai, for example, was not a soggy pile of stuff out of a pot. Each ingredient was laid out separately on a large plate. The eggplant dish had many other ingredients, and was colorful. The salmon in a coconut milk sauce was first rate and generously portioned. The place is more homey than glitzy, and the wine and beer selections were limited, but for straightforward, healthy and delicious Thai food, this is hard to beat.

We ordered take out recently and were very impressed with what we brought home. The volcano beef was spicy, savory and tender. The ginger stir fry was zesty and full of veggies. The yellow curry was chicken rich and fresh. The pad thai with shrimp had sprout, peanut and cabbage highlights. All dishes were super laden with veggies like zukes, carrots, asparagus, mushrooms, onion, red bell peppers. The sauces and broths were TAY-stee! Prices were very reasonable. We'll make put Red Onion on our short list of 'go-to' take out places!

A friend and I recently visited this restaurant and it was amazing. Delicious spring rolls. Great service. My water was never more than half empty (or half full? Hmm..) and the plum peanut sauce with my pad thai was just.... amazing. I could have just eaten that sauce it was so good.

We eat at a lot of Thai restaurants and I think this is one of our top 5 favs. We broke out of the Pad Kee Mao and Pad Thai rut and had 3 different dishes, Chinese sausage fried rice, fresh rolls, Pad See Ew They were all fabulous. You can't miss this little gem!

The Red Onion Thai Cuisine has an excellent menu and produces an even more excellent, authentic Thai meal. Service was friendly, efficient, and cheerful. Portions were substantial.

But delicious. Well spiced. Can't remember the Thai name but it had a coconut chicken broth base. The restaurant was packed for lunch, and the noise almost unbearable. If you want to communicate meaningfully with your dining partner - go in the off hours!

We came to red onion with great expectations and it reached it.the food was delicious and at a great price.we ordered path Thai and it was really crispy and juicy.if we ever come back to visit portland we will definitely return.

Had a great Thai lunch at Red Onion Thai. Of all places, it was recommended to us from the gift store cashier at the Japenese Garden. She was right on! I enjoyed the Kao Soi (curry soup) and my wife at the Pad See Ew (stir fried flat noodles with vegetables). Both were excellent, and reasonably priced. If you like Thai food, definitely try this place.

Stopped in on the way home from a day at the beach. Found this restaurant on TripAdvisor. Got good, well-deserved reviews. Service is good, friendly, efficient. Sat down at one of the 10-12 tables which was set with a napkin, fork, and plate. Our order was placed on our table in about 10-15 minutes, tops. The orders came on their own large plate and bowls so the two of us could eat family style. This is an absolute plus when we go out because we like to share entrees. It's always sort of uncomfortable asking for another plate. Love it when the server automatically brings one so we can share. We ordered Pad Thai and Yellow Curry. I wanted a little spicy, the server suggested mild, plus. Perfect. I love Pad Thai, but I found myself drawn to the amazingly tasty Yellow Curry. The chicken practically melted in my mouth, the vegetables in curry sauce were savory.

This is probably the best value Thai where English is the first language! While we had a 30 minute wait for a table, that was the only disappointment of our visit. This restaurant provides excellent value with generous serving sizes, lovely fresh ingredients and outstanding flavours. There is a good choice of soups, salads, curries, stir frys etc. I am going to say I've had better but not at this price and service point. Only wish they would take bookings. If in Portland and want Thai, this is the place. Also do take away.

Came for lunch directly from the airport. Was coldly greeted, handed a greasy, dirty menu. Thank heaven for hand sanitizer. Seated under a pair of vent blowing cold air on my head. No wonder the table was free. Service continued to be cold and my ordered meal arrived in the appropriate amount of time. String beans over a filet of grilled salmon. Delicious. If not for the salmon, I would exited after touching the menu. Eliminated the negatives I experienced, and this eatery could really be a destination. Decent food, but not a place to bring a date or mom for dinner.

We had a quick meal early Thursday pm. We had rice paper with lettuce, shrimp cilantro and mint a slightly spiced sweet sauce. Light and delicious. My husband had volcano beef with veggies. He enjoyed it. I had a chicken with sweet sauce w veggies. Both were tasty. Very reasonable prices and quick service. Staff could have been a little more friendly. Kind of quiet.

I always end up at the Red Onion when I go for Thai food in Portland. Even though it's on popular 23rd street, it is on the far end from Burnside so parking is a bit easier to find, despite being near the hospital. It is not fancy, but exudes a friendly neighborhood vibe. The servers are very friendly and helpful too. Importantly it is warm inside in the winter so you don't have to wear a coat as you do in so many places these days! The food seems to be getting better every time I go too and the portions are very generous. My favorite is the Pad See Ew with chicken and the Chicken Pad Thai. The Red Curry is also very tasty. Prices are reasonable for Portland and you can walk away with a bill around $25 if you don't have drinks or appetizers. Take-out available.

What a great find in Portland. We came at the recommendation of a friend that was in our group and it far exceeded her build up of the place. The soups are amazing. The appetizers are .. Well, we ordered 6 of them and all were spot on!

I was super impressed by the freshness and flavor of all four of the dishes we had. Service and atmosphere were good, but this place is all about the quality and authenticity of the food. Reasonably priced, clean, friendly service. Located in a popular area (NW 23rd St) so parking can be a problem. We will definitely return. Yum!

Portland has an amazing array of Thai restaurants, probably more than any city in the US. This is the best Pad Thai I've had at any of them. Others at my table had curry and drunken noodles, we also had fresh spring rolls. All were delicious. The service was fast and friendly. The atmosphere is upscale and modern (not the cheesy Thai stuff with the King of Thailand and elephants on the walls - apologies to those who like the 'authentic').

I've eaten here once before and the pad see ew decent... I had beef, the noodles were flavorful and veggies okay. This time, I was so looking forward to some delicious thai, so I got the pad see ew with chicken and the noodles were all stuck together, the chicken tasted like frozen strips that they heated up and the veggies were blah. Pay the extra 1-3 dollars and go to Kinara thai or Thai Bloom. So dependable and so much better.

What a fantastic lunch!!!! This group is doing it right!! I enjoyed their special house roll - Po Pia Sod- what a huge amount of food! Larb salad was delicious as well. Take friends - you will want to share lots of dishes here. Service was great! The foods were hot and fresh. Tasty and clean. I’ll go back here again if I’m in the Pearl District!!!

We loved it so much we went back the next day for dinner! Don't be fooled by its unassuming exterior. I had the best pad see ew I've had in 5 years! The tom yum noodle soup was very tasty as well.

We had a normal chinese meal in this Asian chain restaurant. Nice restaurant, good service en food is ok.

Six of us went to dinner here and we all agreed that it was very good. We had the fresh rolls, fried rolls, sate, pad thai, pad see ew, curry noodles, red curry and lime beef salad. Everything we had ranged from good to really good, the portion sizes were huge and the service was attentive and friendly.

We decided to give this a try based on TA reviews. We loved the pad Thai (chicken and tofu), chicken cashew and massuman curry. The food arrived less than 7 minutes after we ordered (the restaurant was pretty full at the time). Our entrees were only $8 each. Best of all, they tasted great.

We went two times in red onion, it's always very good and very affordable. We will return again soon ...

This place has great food. The flavor was wonderful. A surprise little gem in a nice neighborhood close to downtown. Street parking only. Finding a space can be difficult during lunch.

I ordered the emerald with chicken. It was awful, the chicken looked and tasted like the pre cooked frozen chicken strips from Costco, piled on frozen vegetables with some cabbage chunks with peanut sauce dumped on it. My husbands Pad Thai lacked flavor and was pretty much just noodles. Then we had to take our soda glasses to the counter to ask for refills. Such a disappointment!

The best Thai food I've eaten to date! I have my favorites where I live, but this is outstanding. I especially loved the appetizer A3 - I can't remember it's name. I could eat here every day!

My mom and I snagged the last open table about 7:30 pm on a Sunday night! There was a good reason all the tables were full, the food was excellent and the service was excellent. Try the stir fried beef curry or the tangerine duck. The beef was perfectly spicy at medium and the veggies still just perfectly crisp. The duck was crisp and the sauce a bit sweet but not to much so. I will be back!

...stumbled upon it while walking the Pearl District. Casual....good service.....large portions....reasonably priced....some unusual selections not seen at other Thai restaurants. Esp liked the Po Pia Sod roll appetizer!

Our hotel recommended this restaurant to us, and we are glad they did! The food was exceptionally delicious, and we were surprised at how plentiful the servings were. We had the lemon chicken, which had a light crispy crust, tangerine duck, and yellow curry. The spring rolls were light and crispy. If we return to Portland again, we will come back here!

Wow. I agreed to try this restaurant because my husband loves Thai food. I am usually underwhelmed at this cuisine, but not at this unassuming little place. We took our daughter and her family, and every one of us was happily satisfied and impressed with the service as well as with the amazingly fresh, delicate and deliciously prepared dishes. The portions were generous and spiced just right. The server made sure that those of us who wanted hot and spicy got it and those of us who preferred mildly seasoned got that. The salmon dish was my favorite, and there were several wonderful vegetable dishes I tried also. I can't wait for our next trip to Portland!

The Pad Kee Mao is amazing. Perfectly spiced and a nice large portion. The thai ice teas are winners too.

We were with a larger group and ordered quite a variety of dishes to share. These are the ones I really enjoyed: Po Pia Sod as an appetizer, Papaya Salad, Stir Fried Green Curry Beef, but the best was the Roast Duck with Tangerine Sauce, very tasty with a large portion of duck. The service was great, the prices reasonable. I would definitely come here again.

excellent food every time. The food has just the right amount of savoriness, nice atmosphere, classy decor compared to all the mom and pop places but you pay for it. It's one of the more expensive thai places in town as well but it's probably worth it.

We visited the Red Onion for our son's 16th birthday - his selection after reviewing options for this local precinct on Trip Advisor - Thai is his favourite food and ours as well, so we were looking forward to the dinner. Our table wasn't ready when we arrived; okay, we can wait. We were asked to make our food selection while waiting, which, consequently meant our meal arrived in less than two minutes after being shown to our table - very disappointing. While no one likes to wait too long for a meal, this was way too quick. We would have liked to enjoy a pre-dinner drink though we were not offered a menu or the opportunity to order a drink and waited about five minutes before we could get the attention of a waiter while the food sat before us. The restaurant/cafe seems to turn over patrons quite quickly. The food was reasonably tasty, servings were ample, though it wasn't overly authentic. All in all a pretty average experience.

My wife and I hadn't been to Red Onion SBNO (Since Before New Ownership) but found ourselves in the neighborhood the other day and stopped in for an early dinner. I'm always afraid that, when the original chef retires or sells out, a place will lose its "soul" but, in the case of Red Onion, I was happy to see that things are still humming along nicely there - very good service (really fast food delivery), good prices and very tasty food. Their curries are really well-done, as are "the standards", including what I have to say is the best Pad Kee Mow I've ever had (no stuck-together fat noodles here - well-prepared and just so tasty!). Try some of their more-exotic dishes when you're there - of course, the Pad Thai is good, but why not take advantage of the fact that they have a great cook and a menu that gives you the chance to take a flavor-packed vacation?

I came here for lunch after reading the reviews on trip advisor. Food is tasty and authentic and service is friendly and efficient even though the restaurant is completely packed with line-ups out the door. This is one of the best place we ate at while in Portland and we'll definitely come back for more!

The flavours were perfect, so fresh and delicious. Decent prices and large portions. One make servers is very personable and fun, while the others are courteous but not overly friendly of upbeat. Quick service, even when slammed, apparently. I had the pad see ew, with pad thai to go. My parents had cashew chicken and fresh rolls which were both amazing. You really can't go wrong here.

We visited and our favorite food is Thai, and this was my favorite in Oregon. Another Resturant was world famous, and everyone told us to go there. A local told us to try the Red Onion, and it was much better. My whole huge family loved the food which is very rare.

Excellent Thai food. Everything tasted great. This is in an area with tons of good restaurants, and this place can easily stand up to the others. Not really a criticism but when I was in Paso Robles California I had a Thai iced tea that had the little tapioca pearls. I would love to find another place that also had them.

We have eaten Thai food in many states. It is one of our favorite foods. The Red Onion was the best Thai food we have ever eaten. Unique dishes, fresh and flavorful. Great service too! Excellent experience!

What a wonderful, delicious Thai meal with rich flavors. Each dish that was served to the various tables was tastefully presented. The owner is from Northern Thailand and brings his unique style of cooking. I plan to go back when I return to Portland.

While visiting my daughter she often takes me to her go-to restaurants, and Red Onion is one of them. Wonderful food, and very good prices on their lunch menu.

My brother and I had lunch at the Red Onion Thai Cuisine and came away very impressed. My brother just wanted crispy spring rolls and ordered two batches, which was a wonderful idea because I got to try two of them off his plate. The crispy spring rolls are fantastic! I ordered the spicy chicken and shrimp with fried basil which was very spicy and delicious. They give you so much I had to order a to-go container because I could not finish it. The two servers were great and the waitress was incredibly beautiful which reminded me of that old saying, "Why did God make women so beautiful and man with such a loving heart" I highly recommend the Red Onion because the food is good, the service is good, the restroom was clean, and I really liked the build out of the space with the indented shelves with the Statues and the individual spot lights for each one. It is just a nice place to eat and it is very clean and pleasant. Excellent value also.

we decided that we wanted to eat Thai one evening and having read some reviews of the various options this one stood out a mile. Having eaten there am really not surprised. From the outside it looks fairly basic and indeed there are no frills. But the food was extremely tasty and very well cooked. In addition it was very good value for money - for example there was a steak dish (which partner tried) for approx $15 and there was so much meat in it he had difficulty in finishing it. Would really recommend eating here - no wonder they were busy on a Monday night.

Great tasting Thai food in downtown Portland! Be careful though - you can order spiciness on a scale of 1 to 5, but even a "2" has a kick that is usually a "medium spicy" at other Thai restaurants we frequent. Try a dish from their "House Specials" menu for pleasant surprise! After dinner, it's a short, two block walk for ice cream at Portland's famous Salt & S****.

This appeared to be a good Thai food for a mid-range price in a bustling eatery full of locals. However, on the night of our visit, we found the place too busy for the few servers on hand. Moreover, take-out seemed to take priority over those waiting to be seated. Finally, our two dishes appeared to be good but the soup turned out to be lukewarm and both of us suffered upset stomachs later. From which dish, we were not sure. Finally, the room is big, draughty, and poorly lit.

Wow! I have tried a LOT of Thai food...the seafood was extremely fresh, not overcooked and the curry was simply fabulous. The flavors just "popped" in our mouths! The servings were generous, plenty to share...and the brown rice was the tastiest! We liked it so much, we went back the next night :)

We sat down for lunch and the food came very quickly. Nice design, friendly staff and good food. The pad Thai was better than most places around. Recommend and wi be back

Made reservations for four and we were seated quickly, and attended to immediately. The ambiance is not fantastic, but the food makes up for it. Fresh ingredients, good serving sizes and moderately priced menu items. I had the panang chicken and it was very good. If you are looking for quick, good Thai...check it out!

Every time I come to Portland I come here at least twice during my visit. I LOVE their Tom ka soup. It is sweet with a lot of chicken in it. I have tried it at other Thai places and it is never as good. Lunch is a better deal because you get a large enough portion for less. I have also had at least three other dishes and they never disappoint. Although this isn't the cheapest Thai food I feel like they use quality ingredients which are very fresh so it is worth it to me. The service is always speedy. I really cannot think of anything negative to say about the place. I am just glad that my daughter who lives in Portland loves this place as much as I do because we never tire of going to eat there.

I randomly picked this restaurant as I was passing by. I ordered the Tom Yum Noodle soup which I think is really delicious but not "real" Tom Yum Noodle. Great huge bowl, seafood in there was fresh, soup was refreshing.

Ate here earlier this week while visiting our daughter in Portland. We all absolutely loved our dishes! Pineapple rice, green curry, sweet & sour, it was all so yummy and even better the next day! Service was great & portion sizes were very generous! We will be back!

We found this fabulous place from reading reviews of many Thai restaurants. We are so happy we made the right choice! The hostess was welcoming. The place was clean and pretty. Now on to the good stuff..I had an amazing pineapple fried rice dish and my husband who is an avid curry aficionado had the green curry and I quote “it was the best I’ve ever had”. We travel all over the world and eat Thai at every stop and for him to say this well..it must have been the best. And a huge shoutout to our waiter David! Super nice. Very attentive and just fun to chat with. Choose the red onion.

What a great place to eat...the service was excellent, the food delicious and the atmosphere was pleasant. This being my third adventure in Thai cuisine, I would have to say 'third time is a charm.' The server patiently explained the choices then demonstrated how to put the Miang Kum appetizer together. What an explosion of flavors in every bite and the meal just got better. My Roasted Duck withTangerine Sauce was so pretty that it got compliments sitting on the table before I could take a bite! It tasted as good as it looked - crispy skin, tangy tangerine sauce and tender meat. My daughter's curry was nicely spiced (not too hot) and the vegetables were fresh and still crisp. Portions were plentiful...more than enough to share or take home. Unfortunately, we were too full to investigate the desserts but will look forward to that on the next trip to the Red Onion.

Our B&B hostess didn't recommend this restaurant but we found the food to be quite delicious. The service was excellent and we enjoyed a great meal.

What an amazingly good dinner. Showed up and there was a wait, so we were offered hot tea on a cold night. Enjoyed tom khan chicken and egg roll appetizers. When I thought of what seemed local to Oregon, thought salmon was the answer. So I ordered the wild sockeye salmon panang and gave my mouth a thrill, though not sure if my tummy was even happier.our waiter, David (who also gave us the tea), was an exceptional delight. Really made the evening enjoyable, as if the deliciousness wasn't enough. Only disappointment was we spent so long savoring every morsel that the kitchen closed before we could order dessert. If you're only here for a visit, this is seriously a do not miss stop (from a spoiled New York critic).

We really enjoyed this restaurant in the past - friendly staff, efficient service, good food. We visited again recently and a new generation of friendly staff, service as efficient as ever.

I hadn't been to Red Onion is a couple of years and happened upon it while strolling in the neighborhood on a recent trip to Portland. Was curious if it was as good as I remembered it and it really was. The service was quick and the food excellent. Best Thai I have eaten in Portland. It is a cozy place without being pretentious, which is something so many Portland places succumb to. Great place for a great meal at a reasonable price.

Wonderful menu, fresh and tasty food. Even my husband, who doesn't prefer Thai food loved it. I had a green bean curry. The green beans were crisp tender and the sauce was flavorful with a good amount of heat.

My fave is the pineapple fried rice but tried the chicken pad see ew and egg rolls this time. It wasn't bad; portion was pretty big so I wasn't able to finish. Price isn't too bad either.

We took a rare night out wandering through Northwest Portland....and happened upon this wonderful little restaurant. Although it was busy, we were seated in just moments. Upon ordering, we received our promptly by smiling happy staff. What a meal! I ordered the Roasted Duck with Tangerine Sauce. I'm not a fan of duck, normally, but this dish turned out to be so beautifully prepared, that I've since changed my mind....as long as I can eat duck at this restaurant!!! Mouthwatering, tender, full of flavor...MMMMMM! You need to keep a close eye out, otherwise you might miss it walking by....but what a hidden gem!!!

The crispy basil was beyond hot...but very tasty!! And loved their curries and jasmine tea! Nice outpost near Legacy in Pearl.

My wife and I had a great experience at the Red Onion this evening. The service was the best ever and all coordinated so well with the three folks waiting on diner's needs. The selection was varied with many opportunities for a variety of dishes. The food was excellent best Thai ever for us. Will definitely return in the future.

This place is the perfect blend of good food and good price. Service was excellent, menu was diverse, everyone very helpful. A great little place to stop by and visit.

So impressed with the friendly and attentive staff. Plus, the food was tasty...just the right amount of spice. Nice ambiance.

The atmosphere is informal and the place seems family owned. My friend and I just wanted a quick bite and popped in for a simple lunch. Service was good, not 100%, but definitely friendly. The food was excellent, very reasonably priced and arrived very quickly. Try the pad Thai with glass noodles! Glass noodles are made from mung beans and tastier than rice noodles, but proper prep is key. They can easily be screwed up. Ours was delicious, spiced hot like we wanted it and the chicken we ordered was very tender. We ordered steamed vegetables as a side for $2 a portion-- thought about ordering two but our waitress assured us the veg portions are very generous. She wasn't kidding!! Be sure to be very clear about what you order, as many of the dishes have several alternative ingredient choices. Our tab came to $22, no tax!! Yay Oregon!

I should have known better! Avoid specially dishes and stick with classic options. Ask for spicy to avoid bland. Good service.

I love that they make a gluten free version of the drunken noodles! My favorite! I've come here for lunch a couple times now. Each time it was just before rush hour so the place is fairly empty. The staff is polite and the food comes out quick. The dishes are a little on the spicy side, which is a plus for me!

Recently visited with friends and could not have been happier with the experience. Service was friendly, helpful, welcoming, and prompt. Server recommended the thai iced teas, which were fantastic. The food was stellar. Apps were great to start - egg rolls and little pork meat sticks. After that, the tangerine duck was the only thing I could see myself ordering once I found it on the menu. Delicious sauce, crunchy duck skin, and flavorful meat. This was a dinner I will not soon forget. Do yourself a favor and check it out!

We weren't quite sure what to expect. Our Garmin had us confused with how to get there but we followed the directions anyway and found it. In a cute area of eateries, the restaurant has about 15 tables in it. I think there was a bar on one side of the restaurant but we didn't go to that side, so I'm not sure it's true size. The food was flavorful and the mild was mild, as described (we've been to other places where mild was over-spiced). It was our 25th anniversary and if I'd known then what I know now I would have gone to a fancier place, but it was still a good place to eat. Drive a small car, if possible-- parking in the area is along the streets and tight-fitting.

I walked past Red Onion on my way to dinner at a different restaurant and made a point of coming back another day. Full bar, good selection of dishes and efficient service. I had the Pad Kha soup and Pad Thai with shrimp. Very good and fast service.

After eating at the Pok Pok Thai restaurant my husband and I wanted one more Thai experience before leaving Portland. The 3 flavor halibut dish was a disappointment, as the fish was over cooked and hard on the edges, as well the tomato being pale pink not at all ripe. My speciality chicken dish was quite good, but way too spicy for someone who ordered it mild. The mint was so over cooked, that it appeared to be spinach. The portions are very generous, so unless you want to take some home, you can easily split an entree. My iced green Thai tea was delicious.

There were so many interesting things on the menu, we ordered too much and had to take it home. It came out a little different than I expected, but it was still very good. The lime juice drink I ordered was interesting, refreshing, not too sweet.

On our way back home, we decided to have dinner out. Spotted the Red Onion and saw that it was busy, so we decided to stop there. The only negative is parking. In this part of Portland, it's difficult to find parking, we ended up about a block away. We had Pad Thai with Chicken and it was fabulous. The wait staff was friendly, helpful and provided great service. The Red Onion is a great neighbor hood Thai restaurant.

Nice atmosphere, great service, wonderful food! Not much more to say except the 100 character minimum is rather annoying.

I can't really talk about the vibe of the place. I walked in and viewed the menu. I had the pad see eew chicken and I really liked it. They cooked it real good.

Red Onion has all the classics, but I also love that they have seasonal dishes using fresh ingredients and offer Thai dishes you don't normally find at restaurants. A great example is the crab cake we had on our most recent visit using fresh Oregon crab. Very reasonably priced and fast service.

The waitress talked me into the chicken special, and am I glad she did! It was a huge portion of tempura chicken tenders tossed with lemon, mint and peppers. The flavor combination was addictive and delicious. Very reasonable prices and the chef came out to ask me if I liked her special! I would definitely go again if I lived in Portland.

We were looking for a good Thai place to get a lot of food for a big crowd so we selected Red Onion. We called ahead but the place was very busy when we got there so we waited about 20 extra minutes for everything. Their menu includes all the basic Thai dishes!

The main dishes did look quite big, but you're also paying $5 or more than you would at most Thai places for things like Pad Thai. Husband and I ordered large rice (only $2) that was a great deal compared to other places. We also tried to get beef larb, not on the menu, but they tried to do it for us (not mincing the meat though). Instant mistake. Came out nothing like larb, in fact, it was not spicy at all like we asked! Thai food needs to have the heat, especially when requested. Also had the papaya salad and again not hot, didn't taste authentic. One of the servers noticed our disappointment and brought us a thing of hot sauces to choose from, which I am quite surprised they didn't do from the beginning when we asked for extra hot! I noticed another table had received these sauces too. Big disappointment, as we were able to spice things up and make it taste much better. All-in-all, in Portland, you will find so many better places to eat Thai, especially more authentic.

We ordered from Red Onion with Uber Eats. The pad thai was delicious, the spring roll was so fresh tasting & the won ton soup was outstanding! The portions were huge as well.

This restaurant has been there for a long time especially considering the average life expectancy of such establishment on NW 23. The menu is not huge, the service is near-bad in its informality and the time it takes to get a waiter, but the dishes are consistently good. You won't get blown away by the culinary aspect of the place but you won't be disappointed, either. Yes, it is yummy whatever you order. I am yet to try a dish on their men I dislike.

We went to Red Onion because it was close and had good reviews, and we were not disappointed. We were seated and served quickly, and everything was delicious. We shared a thai beer, soup and two entrees, and it was way too much food, but all the better for leftovers. Would definitely visit again.

The restaurant seems old and not so clean. Did not care for the food. The staff was nice. Difficult to find parking and when you do....you find you have to pay. It's very close to a busy hospital. Would not go again. Much better places in Portland.

My family had just an okay experience. The service was very quick, but that seemed to be due to the way they added a pile of steamed veggies to every dish and meats that were obviously just dropped in at the last second. I found the food rather bland, they didn't ask about level of spiciness or offer the relish tray I later saw at another table. Pad Thai was like a sauce from a jar, same with peanut sauce. Just okay.

Our meal started with fresh rolls w shrimp rolled into a cone shape. They were fresh & delicious and served with a great peanut sauce. The pad Thai was not great but lemon chicken with veggies & rice was tasty. The peanut sauce on it was a bit thick, but the chicken was moist & the marinade flavor was there! We’ll return. It was also fun to watch the place fill up on a Sunday night plus many picked up to go orders.

I am very particular about any kind of Asia cuisine perhaps because I'm Chinese and have a "sharp palate" as we are fond of saying. Ever since I discovered Red Onion, I've been holding all my business lunch meetings there: the atmosphere is quiet and relaxed; the service is fast and the food simply delicious and they change up the menu often. And the price points are very reasonable.

A great place on a rainy day. We were walking by and noticed an amazing pad thai dish on the table. We went in and were warmly welcomed. The prices are great with large portions and the food is amazing.

Lots of locals here for the really great Thai food. Location is very bland - let's call it extremely casual. Highlights are the great food and good service. Would definitely eat here again.

We have dined at this restaurant many a times in the past. But during the recent visit we felt the food was tastier. The staff was very friendly and polite. We ordered the Tofu salad rolls for appetizer, the rice wrapper was soft and I felt that this was probably one of the very good salad rolls that I have had in the Portland area. It had the right balance of all the ingredients, the peanut sauce was delicious too. For a group of four we ordered a stirfried eggplant, vegetables and cashewnut stir fry and a pad kee mow. The eggplant was delicious and the sauce in the dish was great too, the vegetable cashew stirfry was rather bland dish. The noodles were superb too. We always order the red rice along with the food which has a delicious nutty taste to it. We had asked the host to make the food less greasy but I think the kitchen forgot about it as the restaurant was about to close in half an hour. But the food was great and the portions were substantial too.

A friend and I enjoyed dinner here on a Saturday night; the restaurant was recommended by our hotel. We enjoyed red curry and crab fried rice. Lots of food and delicious!

Who doesn't love when you randomly pick a place as you walk by, and have a great experience? My friend & I both love Thai, and picked this place for no other reason than we saw it and said 'why not?' Both dishes were outstanding. The peanut sauce for the rolls had a lovely warmth that was just comforting. The spinach curry was.... divine. We were both moaning. The restaurant is attractive, and the service is great. Prices are a couple of dollars higher than many Thai places but definitely good value due to the quality. I'm in Portland every few months, and absolutely will return here.

We really enjoyed our food at Red Onion. Plenty of options for vegetarian and non-vegetarian diners. We opted for the veg spring roll, yellow curry and fried rice. The curry was a little watery but the flavor was there. I also wish it had more vegetables but overall very good.

go early to get a table since its neat to major medical complex on one of Portland's most desirable shopping and "hang" out neighborhoods. a must do. Lunch about $10 and large portions--truly good!

We did a walk by earlier in the day and it looked OK. Food was average; the wine list was small and unimpressive. Our service was pleasant but way too rushed. We had one bite of our appetizer and then the rest of the meal showed up. The floors are concrete and the ceilings are high. This made for a very high noise level, even with minimal customers in the dining area. It was not a relaxing meal. There are pictures of the Royal Family and elephants on the walls--see previous reviewer comment--but they were more tasteful than most.

we ordered several dishes to take out for Friday dinner. I had a hard time making some of the choices, especially some of the house specialties. We landed on the volcano beef, pad thai and massaman curry (sp?). The volcano beef almost disappeared before I had a chance to get some. The massaman was succulent and flavorful. WIth a little rice, and those great noodles, it was a great dinner. It went on too. On the day after, we had curry w rice, and added our own roasted veggies. wonderful sauce!

In general, it is very difficult to find authentic, good Thai food in the USA and this restaurant fits that description. The Pad Thai was gluey and tasteless, except for the hot component. The Fried Basil with Shrimp and Chicken was just ok. The service was very good but I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants "real" Thai food.

The restaurant is solid and unpretentious. There is no salt and pepper on the tables. I thought I would try my food before I asked for them. And then realized the reason for no condiments. The food is perfect.

My husband and I were in Portland for vacation and craving something spicy. We dropped in the Red Onion after walking up and down 21st and 23rd streets. The restaurant seemed stark from the outside, but once inside, we found it to have a very Zen vibe. The service was super quick.... almost a little too quick at first, and my expectations were not very high. Being on vacation, we decided to order food outside of our typical fare that we get when we eat Thai at home. We chose the Stir-fry Green Curry Beef and one of the daily specials, a fish based dish that was absolutely the best Thai meal I have ever had! Fresh, spicy, amazing combination of flavors.

Phenomenal Thai restaurant, probably the best Thai food I've ever had! Had a seaweed soup, followed by Thai green curry with vegetables and a coconut base (with no fish sauce...Yahoo!) that was truly exceptional! Cooked brown rice was an option, and I ordered that, too! Left full! Unhesitatingly recommend!

Eat in or take-out, the food is excellent. The Pad See Ew is my favorite but there are many selections that are good. This restaurant is on 23rd, one of the most popular neighborhoods in Portland,OR.

I love Red Onion! I eat here all the time. My favourite dishes are the drunken noodle and the lemon chicken. I just tried the mango salad a couple days ago and will also have to add that to my list. The dishes are always tasty and the service courteous (there is a new guy there now who makes me wish I enjoyed my job that much). The prices are reasonable. I always bring friends here and they enjoy it too. I would also recommend the Thai iced tea and the stuffed chicken wings. I will add that I have had better pad thai. Pad Thai is another favourite Thai dish of mine and while Red Onion's is not bad (my friends enjoy it) it isn't something I would choose here (although of all the Thai places I have tried in Portland their's is the best).

We ducked in for a late lunch yesterday while shopping in NW Portland. Even though lunch is only served until 2:30 and we arrived at 2:00, we were warmly welcomed and immediately seated. The Pad Thai was very good and spiced just to taste. The crab cake appetizer was amazing. Two crab-packed and perfectly seared cakes in a thin mildly spiced pineapple sauce were accompanied by a fresh and artfully placed green salad. Although billed as an appetizer, it was a perfect light lunch. There were plenty of curries, fried rice, and noodle dishes on the menu. They had a few wines by the glass from which to choose. The atmosphere is modern with a serene vibe. I highly recommend it. It is the kind of place that I'd love to have in my neighborhood.

I eat here usually on my lunch break a few times a month. They take to go orders and the food is always prepared quickly and fresh. It is hands down my favorite Thai place in Portland. Great customer service and great food!

My wife and I are happy to join others in saying Red Onion has great Thai food at reasonable prices! We ordered their Fresh Rolls, Tom-Yum soup and Lemon Grass Chicken Salad..all were tasty. Spiciness adjustable on request. Any time we're in Portland and in the mood for Thai cuisine, Red Onion will be our destination!

Good Thai food, our dishes were too spicy but nothing that a little sweet & sour sauce couldn't fix.

Terrific dinner, had seafood medley and seafood curry (D5 and D6). Fast service, just $1 for extra rice. Nice setting, noticed Asian eaters so expect food matches Eastern tastes. Prices reasonable, would return.

Ate here with husband and two children (10 and 13) Tuesday. It was so good my 13 year old insisted that we return on Friday. We had the spring rolls, which were delicious and the perfect thing on a very hot day. We also ordered tofu Pad Thai and the Spicy Basil friend rice. My son is the only vegetarian and he ordered the chicken satay, which he loved. Between the four of us, this was too much food, which meant we got to enjoy it for lunch the next day! We will definitely return!

We were visiting Portland for the day with my daughter-in-law and 2 grandchildren, as my husband was working in PDX, as well. We arrived late into the hotel and ordered (some very yummy) Thai food from the REd Onion. Generous portions and flavorful. Especially their fresh spring rolls, highly recommended with their fresh peanut sauce! Only problem with my carry-out order, was when I arrived - my order was actually bagged behind counter, but it was so loud that the host didn't hear my name correctly- I had to wait a bit , for food that was prepared and waiting to go.

Visited Red Onion again in December and loved the food. The grapefruit salad was so good, noodle dishes flavorful and not oily and the curries used fresh produce. Service was excellent and friendly. Prices are super reasonable.

On New Years Day, many restaurants were closed, but we were glad that Red Onion was open. The staff was friendly and the food was delicious. We ordered the Chicken Red Curry and the Pad See Ew. The laser ice was quick and the prices were extremely reasonable. We are definitely returning the next time we visit Portland!

Excellent Thai and other Asian foods in the heart of NW Portland. The service, take-out or din in, is excellent. Have not had a bad meal here.

Great place for a quick meal, but not especially remarkable. Service was great. I had the pad thai and it was good. There are so many thai restaurants in Portland that it just didn't stand out for me.

We ordered the Thai salad. The chicken in it was tough. The salad was drenched in dressing. We also had a Voloano beef dish. It was very flavorful. However, the beef was even tougher than the chicken. It was inedible.

This attractive Thai restaurant is right on the streetcar line. It is my Thai restaurant of choice in PDX because the food always has fresh, attractive ingredients, the service is professional and there are always truly special dishes on the speciality menu. Their food is spicy, so if you are not a heat lover, order things mild--medium spice has a good kick and hot is truly eye-watering hot. The curries are superb, especially the duck curry. Their tong kang soup is great.

It was a before theater lunch stop and we were pleased with the food at the Red Onion. We ordered the spring rolls for an appetizer and they were crisp and served with a nice sauce and a small salad. For the main course, we had the crispy duck in tangerine sauce and a fried rice with tofu. The duck was very tasty but not as crispy as I would have liked. That was OK though. The fried rice was very good and the tofu was cooked perfectly. Service was attentive. The two negatives; one, the time in between courses was way too quick. We didn't even have time to finish four spring rolls before our main course was brought out. That can be corrected easily enough when we return by saying something. Two, the Buddha statues and the nooks they reside in could really need a good cleaning. Spider webs are not acceptable.

A nice find on 23rd. Pretty traditional Thai, well prepared and relatively inexpensive. Take them at their word when they say spicy hot, because unlike some Thai restaurants they mean it. Good service. Friendly staff.

Really delicious curries and salads. Not too hot. Lovely atmosphere. Generous servings. Very friendly staff. Right on the NS streetcar route.

went there with office colleagues - first time in portland. the food served is very tasty, they offer that unique thai tea as well. ambience is so-so

It was lunch but that doesn't make up for curt responses to my questions. That said, I really enjoyed every dish we tried. The meals are huge so we tried 3 appetizers and still a lot. The calamari was just right - not to much batter nor over cooked. I will go again when back in Portland. I want to try all of their specials !

I eat here for lunch 2-3x per week. I'm a little obsessed with their Tom Kha Gai soup - which at $4 for a huge serving off, really can't be beat. I also taunt people in my office by bringing back the Thai Chicken Salad, which tastes - but especially smells - amazing. Great place for couples, friends, business, and solo.

Would have loved to have to have eaten here based on other reviews, but not happy with staff ignoring waiting people almost to the point of rudeness. A simple acknowledgement of waiting people would have been enough. At least there are plenty of other dining options in the district.

We had the shrimp with vegetables with peanut sauce but the sauce was very thick and the other dish was a bit better but I can’t remember what it was. Service was okay. The place was pretty busy so I assume a lot of regulars come here. Would not come here again.

This place did not disappoint. Got a tip from a local to go here if we were craving Thai food and I'm so glad we did. I had pad thai and it was great. They served it with ALOT of chicken. My husband had curry noodles and holy crap they were so good. Addictive even. The dish was really spicy and I can't handle that spice but I could not stop eating it! It was sweet creamy goodness! Wonton soup was good too. Best Thai food I have had in a while.

Tried their special appetizer and was delighted with my choice, Also enjoyed the stir fry ginger dish. Staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful. I will definitely return to this place.

Stopped in for a quick dinner after a long day. Had appetizer and entree off of the "specials menu". Crab cake and fried snapper. Crab cake was very good, snapper was "okay" ... not something I'd order again, not because it was not good, it just didn't do anything for me. I'll definitely try something else ... very good service & very reasonable prices ... with water the bill was $23+ tip.

I was introduced to this place while I lived in Portland. But now, when I visit Portland, I make it a point to go in here for a meal of Kao Sui or green curry. Unlike many Thai places, the chef is very respectful about spice tolerance levels and options are offered right from mild to very spicy. (In my opinion it fits all needs) Try it out, this may be the Thai food place for you too!

It was Sunday night and no one wanted to cook. What do you do? Order in Thai. It was our first experience with this Restaurant, and assure you it will not be out last. From Soup to Curry , all the dishes were prepared properly , packed beautifully, and tasted great.

We’ve been going to Red Onion for years and have always enjoyed their food. We wanted to eat outside. We were told we had to order inside. The food came in a Takeout bag. I had to ask for the table to be wiped. At least they might have given us plates. Disappointing.

For those that love Thai food: This is the place! We drive from the other side of Portland just to eat there, occasion or not. It's all about food - taste and quality. Tried many Thai restaurants and quit trying - always go back for the best Coconut Soup in town. Make sure you try appetizer - #1 on their menu and ask them to show you how to eat it.

My family and I stopped in to this Thai restaurant expecting the usual delicious Thai food experience one typically gets at most Thai restaurants. The servers were very nice, but things then went downhill. The restaurant was a bit too noisy for our taste. Then, we were quite famished and eager to dig into our entrees. A couple of us had the Panang Curry which was good, but I had the Pad Thai and, boy, was that terrible. I really couldn't think of a worse Pad Thai I had ever had in my life (and I've had quite a few, it being my go-to dish). The smell reminded me of bad smelling gym shoes. Needless to say I had to give a poor score to the Red Onion Thai Cuisine restaurant. I was miserable until my palate was cleansed with some fresh gelato down the street. I surely hope the management sees this review and works to improve its Pad Thai. If they don't, seek your nourishment elsewhere.

We are really big on Thai cuisine. We stumbled into Red Onion while looking for lunch and were thrilled by the superb Thai dishes beautifully presented by a very attentive staff. Value way beyond the cost. Can't wait to take our "foodie" relatives to this good spot.

Only tried this place once, but I definitely will be back. The Pad Thai was excellent. Can't wait to try something else.

Whilst we are not regular visitors to Portland the Red Onion is always on our 'must eat at' list whenever we are in town. In a city spoiled for choice with good places to dine this one stands out from even that distinguished crowd. The food is fresh, well prepared and delicious. The service is friendly and it's not just us but every time we have been there everybody else looks like they are enjoying it as well.

Some of the best Thai food going. Service is friendly and efficient. Loved the grapefruit salad and the red curry. Tastiest PadThai ever.

Fantastic food. Hard to get a seat in during peak hours so usually I order by phone and carry out. I have never had a bad bit of anything from Red Onion. It is traditional American Style Thai with fully authentic flavors and fresh ingredients. The Salmon Panang will not disappoint!

At time of visit mid-Aug many things were not open for dining in. Went to get carry out and found restaurant open for dining in. Open area with good ventilation every other table open. Food good but not great. Service good. Within walking distance from Inn at Northrup Station.

Eating here has become a tradition now. I always get the same thing: coconut milk soup and massaman curry, which I've grown to adore. I've tried massaman curry at different restaurants in different cities, and the one served here always tops my list.

Visited Portland and stayed at a hotel near 23rd Ave. Several Thai restaurants to choose from, but this one seemed hopping and was closest to our hotel. Ordered three dishes. Pad Thai noodles were average. I've had worse. The noodles were a little soggy but it was not terrible. Second dish was green curry. This looked more like a soup. What a mess. It was mostly filled with bamboo shoots or something. Filled with liquid which made the eggpland virtually inedible. I should have sent it back and asked to take it off the bill. Chicken was moist when I could fish it out of the bowl. Last dish was for my son who likes fried rice. Ordered the shrimp fried rice. The shrimp were jumbo size and good but the rice was terrible. Bottom line- if I lived in Portland, I would not be eating here again. I guess the prices must be pretty good because it was pretty full.

We have eaten here many times. I like the menu. While I enjoy Thai food I often find the menus interchangable. We like the crab friend rice- lots of crab on top of tasty friend rice. I love Duck Red curry and even make it myself. Their version has eggplant and lychees- very nice. the boneless chicken wings are a nice appetizer you don't see most places.

We stopped here for a late lunch and loved it. Had the sampler appetizers which were wonderful, and beautiful. The food was excellent, and served efficiently in a friendly manner. All their food looks like artwork.

I have been to dozens of Thai restaurants over the years and this was the best one ever. That explains why it was busy on a weekday evening. It is worth the wait. I had a duck curry dish that was out of this world. The service and decor is what you would expect from an urban Thai place.

I don't even know where to start... I rarely give 5 stars, but this unassuming restaurant won me over based on great food, great service, great value... and for making me want to go back the next day... First off, a big thank you to those of you who have submitted glowing reviews for Red Onion on Trip Advisor. I love Thai food, and was dismayed to learn that Typhoon had closed down on 23rd Ave. So I looked up a bunch of reviews and decided to try Red Onion myself. I was with family so they were eagerly anxious to try it out as well. What was impressive was that there were many dishes that I have never seen on the majority of "western" thai menus. So we had to try some of them out.... 4 of us ordered way too much food, but we wanted to experience as many dishes as possible. To start we had the Green Papaya salad- best I've ever had!!!!!! The dressing was not sour or too acidic- just seasoned beautifully and enough Palm sugar to soften the rough edges- you could make cocktails out of the dressing it's that good! Also the Angel Wings- heavenly! Never had them before, and they knocked all of our socks off. Incredible flavours, and mystifying dish as to how they stuff the boneless wings. Probably one of the best dishes I've ever tasted. (Mushroom carrot, chicken, prawn, pork...) The Po Pia Sod rolls were a find- tasty (never seen them before, and quite filling for 2 large crepe sized rolls filled with sausage, chicken, tofu, egg, cucumber, onion, bean sprouts, shrimp... and topped with dungeness crab- a nice portion of crab) Then the stir friedspicy beef green curry- had to try a staple curry and again, this does not taste like your average green curry- here the spices and herbs play centre stage and dance and sing across your palate like virtuoso performers. The chef (s) here are incredible- umami was very much in play here. Also had the Chu Chee Catfish with chili paste, green beans, asparagus and kaffir lime, and the Spicy Basil Fried Rice with Crispy basil and shrimp. (didn't really need this as the beef came with steamed rice, this was our least favourite dish). Had nice Pinot Gris to go with the meal and for 4, it was @ $100.00. Left full, raving about the flavours and how happy our mouths and stomachs were, and what we would try next. Will definitely be back! On top of that, the server was excellent. She brought us tastes of some items to help us with our decisions- very tightly run ship. Highly recommend this to anyone who wants to step outside their comfort zone, and try some unique dishes that will become memories.

When I visit PDX. I truly enjoy having lunch at the Red Onion. Excellent Thai food. good portion sizes. Friendly staff. Remember PDX unofficial motto is Keep Portland Weird. Now onto some negative reviews. Some reviews have given negative remarks because of decor, lack of 'attention' because how important the reviewer felt they were to the restaurant. Plus, parking in the Pearl district is quite difficult. Well, just imagine being a employee each day and try to find a place to park to go to work? The Red Onion still has a lot of the -Keep Portland Weird motto- while keeping with it's roots to great Traditional Thai Cuisine. 100% worth the stop. Don't let the cheese ball reviews stop you from visit this place.

The food was good (we both got Shrimp Pad Thai); nothing too special, but yummy. The service was definitely lacking as others have pointed out. Our server seemed angry from the minute we walked in, and both our dinners being screwed up didn't help anything. We both received chicken instead of shrimp, as did the table next to us, and asking for them to fix it seemed to really annoy him. Then our bill came out incorrect, with different, extra drinks we hadn't ordered, and he seemed upset that we were asking him to correct it. Overall, it was good, but not really good enough to make up for the poor service.

Nice food and attentive but not overbearing service. Presentation was great and the accompanying vegetables were cooked perfectly (not over-done). But - why is there a sweet after-taste with the meal? Surely sugar is not needed with such good food?

After striking out at a more well-know Thai restaurant in Portland, we found the Red Onion. It was great. The restaurant had a friendly, neighborhood feel. The food was fantastic, and the service was excellent. Look forward to dining there again the next time we're in town.

We were hungry looking for a place to have lunch and saw the Red Onion. We read the reviews in Trip Advisor and we weren't dissappointed. The service was great, we enjoyed the food which was excellent, and the wine was great.

I don't eat Thai food often, but this was exceptional. I decided to break out of my pad Thai or green curry rut and went for the spicy basil fried rice. It was the best fried rice I've ever had. Just the right amount of spice - tasty without being uncomfortable. I love basil, but this was a little much even for me. Fortunately it was in whole leaves, so it was easy to pick off some. A little fresh lime juice squeezed on top was just the perfect compliment. The soups, salads, stir fries, curries, fried rice, and noodles each come with a choice of proteins, and are so reasonably priced. One of the above with tofu, chicken, or beef is only $10; with shrimp or squid it's only $12. And there are several delicious-sounding entrees to choose from too, all less than $15. The portions are very generous. My fried rice was easily two separate meals. My husband is not a fan of Thai food (which is why I don't eat Thai more often), but he loved the pad Thai with tofu. My son had the wonton soup served in a bowl the size of a cauldron and chock full of shrimp and squid. We were too full for dessert and left very happy, especially considering how small the check was. The restaurant is very bright and clean, tastefully decorated, and the staff is extremely nice and accommodating. There was a little bit of a wait when we arrived around 7:00 on a Monday night, but they were most anxious to seat us as quickly as possible. (It's a small dining room, and they don't take reservations.) Definitely worth a return trip!

I went there for a dinner on a business trip expecting high, the place is centrally located, service is good. I would say to my experience the food quality is average to Thai standards that i have experienced.

We were recommended to here by the staff at Inn at Northrop Station. Another great venue. There were very few people in there at 8:30 pm when we went, though there seemed to be a lot of takeout traffic. We ordered appatizers and an entree. The appetizers could have been the entire meal, they were huge and very good. The entrees were about the same size as the apps, and also very good. Wait staff was not very attentive that night, but ok. Would definately go back for Thai food.

Fast and efficient restaurant. Nice selection of Thai food served hot, fresh and fast. Prices are a bit high but the portions are good. Parking available on the street paid via a meter.

Every time I go there I have the same experience- decent food but horrible service. It’s like they’re angry we came. Will definitely go elsewhere next time.

Was there Wednesday night this past week. The food was excellent and was a terrific value. The service was a bit slow as the place was very busy. All in all a terrific experience.

If you're in the 23rd St. area of Portland and craving some Thai, just wait until the regular crowd thins out, especially from the Good Samaritan rush, and hit the Red Onion about 1:30. Relaxed, casual, not a lot of atmosphere, but you're here for the food. Really outstanding Thai; clearly the best on the West side of Portland. Great appetizers -- you may never get off the appetizer menu! -- and very creative salads; ask them to make you the shrimp and grapefruit slaw and you will be rewarded by the most exquisite combination of flavors you've ever had in a salad. The Pad Thai is terrific, the portions very generous. Highly recommended.

We were only in Portland for 4 days but we visited the Red Onion at least 4 times. We went the first time for dinner and the food was delicious, service excellent and I don't know how they managed to get the orders out so quickly. After that, our daughters returned twice more for lunch and dinner...clearly they loved the food and my wife and I returned again for another dinner. It's casual setting means you don't have to dress up and you can just relax and enjoy the food. Interestingly, though some reviews talk about difficulty getting in or crowds, that never was a problem for us...we never had a reservation and they always had a table available whenever we showed up...good karma I guess. If you're walking around the northern part of Portland or want to enjoy a leisurely tour on the streetcars, it's easy to find on NW 23rd Street. Afterwards, walk a few blocks over to Salt & Straw for dessert. Worth the trip!

my waitress didn't even look at me, she forgot part of the order and never came back to check to see if everything was alright. I ordered lemongrass chicken but it came with peanut sauce...not typical. the plate was ice cold hence the food that touched the plate was as well and on a cold rainy night that is not what I was looking for. However, the soup was very good and a good portion, the chicken dish was large as well and had lots of vegies which was the draw for me in the first place. I think with a few minor employee fixes it could be good/

Food was on par and extremely delicious! The wait staff was nice but not really paying attention. I had to flag them down for another drink and then sat for about 15 minutes waiting for the check. Despite the service hiccups, I'd totally recommend this place!
Delicious! One of my Favorite Thai Restaurants in Portland
My boyfriend and I definitely consider Red Onion on 23rd Ave as one of our favorite Thai restaurants in Portland. We can't help but order the Red or Yellow Curry (Top 20% in Portland) and Pad See Ew, or Pad Kee Mao every time we visit. However the Crab Fried Rice is also a truly delicious meal. Since we live near the area, we have called in our order many times and they are always very timely with our meals -- ready to pick up within 15 minutes. They're service and staff are great and conscientious. I always recommend this place to anyone who's craving Thai food. FYI: Lunch is a couple dollars cheaper than dinner for the same plates, but the plates are affordable and we typically take a portion of our meals home.
