sure, it feels pretty trendy. and it's a little loud (which didn't matter, as i was by myself, eating at the bar). but the food was fantastic (i had the "little red riding wood" cocktail, the korean style fried chicken, and a panna cotta). service ignored me for about five minutes, but was very friendly and helpful after that.

We ended at the Redwood for breakfast because we couldn't get into Country Cat. They are within a few doors of each other. We are so delighted to have found this darling restaurant. It is not a big restaurant, but, cozy and intimate. Kim (our server) was top notch! Very friendly, knowledgeable and provided great information. We shared the chiliquiles and hashbrowns. SO delicious. EVERYTHING was made fresh and from scratch. Both were very flavorful and filling. The hashbrowns were crispy and flat-ish, not bulky and floating in butter. So good! We definitely will be returning again for breakfast and dinner. Do yourself a favor and give this darling restaurant a try. You will be happy!

If you like a good Old Fashion, you can get one here. Happy hour is awesome. Must try the wings and brussels sprouts. The bartenders are all friendly and I haven't had a bad drink yet. The atmosphere is really rich, warm and welcoming.

This restaurant had delicious food! The place we had planned on going to had a long wait so we walked up the street a little further and came into Redwood. The staff were great and the food was so good! We had steak and there pasta of the night. I would defiantly recommed this restaurant!!

This place has a nice selection of drinks and a great hamburger. The staff was attentive and friendly.

Smoked trout hash with dill mustard sauce, blueberry fritters with lemon curd and a cocktail consisting of hot pepper vodka, pineapple juice, coconut cream, lime and basil....That my friends is how you start a vacation. I highly recommend!

A homemade veggie burger made with yams! Yummy! My friend and I both had the butternut squash soup to start with. Certainly warmed us up on such a miserable day. We shared the salad that had the apples and blue cheese. I should have ordered a whole one to myself but then I wouldn't have had room for the veggie burger.

We visit Redwood for Breakfast. Very good food with an excellent service in a fine comfortable place with a lot of room. We had the Trout Hash and Fried Oatmeal Waffles with a lot of coffee. Fair price.

I was very pleased with my trout dish, the ambiance, and our waitperson. Two others had the skirt steak and liked it (although one thought it was a little tough). The fried brussell sprouts were rather disappointing -- underdone, with some raw taste and texture. My white sangria was quite good, but neither of the two who had the malbec liked it at all and our fourth person very much did not like his white wine. All were imported wines, so it was obvious that someone thought they were good and went to some length to obtain them, but it was a thumbs down from our party (one of whom is an ex-restauranteur). We'd gladly return but wouldn't order the same wines again!

Really good food! We each had the burger, which was simple but very delicious, and more importantly we shared a side of their wings, and holy hipster were they delicious! Imagine taking the wings from enormous prehistoric chickens 6-8 feet tall - big, juicy and meaty - then covering them in an impossibly delicious crispy skin that cracked like a choc-ice, when you bit into it and came away in big delicious salty fragments. Then, if that wasn't enough, imagine covering the whole thing in a beautifully spicy sticky elixir of the gods. They were so big, we had to take some of them away in a box. I reheated and ate the leftovers later that evening, standing at the counter, in what my partner later described as "like watching a ravenous rat in a feeding trance". When I awoke from my feasting, the bone had been completely stripped of every morsel of its tasty contents as if left out for days in the wild for a week.... The drinks were tasty and the service was prompt and friendly.

Wife and i ate dinner here, it was great. The food was perfectly cooked, also enjoyed a very delicious house cocktail Out waiter was friendly and cheerful and really good at his job. All questions were answered in detail making choosing very easy. I would go back. I recommend this place.

Granted my friend and I arrived lavish for brunch on the advent of Crazy 4th Weekend. The noise level was over the top until the end of our meal when the crowd had thinned. My smoked trout hash was spectacular and the two waitstaff were cheerful, thorough and oh-so-efficient. The whole experience left me planning my next brunch on return!

great variety of drinks, very patient and friendly staff, and amazing food. you must try the fried Brussels sprouts. I also had one of the best burgers ever here, and the mac and cheese is sinfully delicious! I've been here twice and have not yet been disappointed! the atmosphere is nice with dim lighting, but can be a little overwhelming if the house is full - it becomes a little less like a "nice date," but I still highly recommend it

This place is more concerned with keeping a hipster aesthetic than helping new customers. We were asked to leave before our entrees arrived because "your table is reserved, but you are welcome to pay your $55 tab". Funny, nothing I can find anywhere suggests you even took reservations and you had 6 other tables open. Sorry we didn't fit your "style" or whatever it was that made you ask us to leave we certainly are not paying for the food we didn't have served to us, so why did you try to charge us??? Pretentious SCAM artists. You deserve to be shunned by any new customers.

Redwood has a limited menu, but whatever you order will be delicious. Perfect place for a date night. Not much on the menu for little ones. Great service, great atmosphere and delicious food.

I came here with my brother after discovering the Country Cat was just booked full and it was a 30 minute wait to get in. P.S. The chicken fried steak at the Country Cat is the very best in the land of Portland, that is why there is a crowd. We decided to try Redwood and I am very happy we did. Redwood is a small restaurant/bar that is serving up its own great cuisine. I broke my Keto Diet once again and ordered the Chilaquiles. In fact, we both ordered those. My brother ordered a side of potato pancakes and I ordered a side of bacon. The Chilaquilies are some of the very best I have ever had.The food was fantastic, the service was excellent, the coffee tasted good and the atmosphere is nice. There is a really nice Farmer's Market on the weekend in Montivilla and you can just walk to it. Lots of excellent produce, food carts, cute dogs to look at, etc. I really like that area of Stark street. I highly recommend you eat at the Redwood.

Interesting industrial decor with a small but equally interesting menu. Service is prompt, presentation is good. We enjoyed our breakfast here.

I was happliy surprised at the wonderful food I was served at this little restaurant on Stark. The menu was varied and the prices reasonable. I had the trout hash with all items cooked to perfection and beautifully plated. I liked the small size of the restaurant and the uncrowded feeling, despite the small space. Love the wood decor and the staff were very friendly and courteous.

Okay, first I have to admit that I'm an older person, fairly set in my ways of normal eating but have kids that are much more adventurous and together we sometimes find some gems. I took my daughter to Redwood and ended up having one of the best meals either of us have had for quite a while. It was a little loud due to a fairly large group having dinner but the service was still excellent and you felt like you were being served by owners or people that really cared how you felt. Drinks came fast, appetizers just as fast. She gave us her opinion of what was offered and choices we hadn't contemplated. I had the trout and my daughter chose the Ahi salad. It was a good dinner with each sampling the other's plate and both being stripped clean. Well worth the price and a great dinner.

Had a great dinner here with a party of four this week. I had the burger which was excellent. The service was very good. The drink choices were affordable. I will be back soon. Pro tip: parking is on the street. I found a spot within 1 block of the restaurant.

I had the most amazing Swedish pancakes here with a side of bacon! I loved the lemon sauce and absolutely cleaned my plate... and probably would have licked it clean had I not been with coworkers. I would absolutely eat here again on a future visit to Portland!

We had breakfast at Redwood while visiting Portland. The food was delicious. It was one of the best meals we had while on vacation. If you go get the chilaquiles. They were the best we have ever had. The service was also wonderful. It is a small restaurant so be prepared for a little of a wait but completely worth it! We are looking forward to eating there again.

had a nice evening with our son and his girlfriend. good food, good service, nice atmosphere. a nice option for the neighborhood.

I was in the mood for chilaquiles last weekend for brunch and came across Redwood on Yelp as an option. With the good reviews, we decided to give it a try. *Drool,* we will definitely be going back! With it's warm, inviting decor and friendly staff, Redwood was a lovely way for us to begin our Saturday before our subsequent hike. The menu has an array of delicious looking affordable options, but I stuck with my original craving and got the chilaquiles, which hit the spot. We also ordered a side of potato pancakes and I ordered a rosemary mimosa, which was crisp and refreshing and not too sweet. My husband and our friend were very happy with their choices, as well. The only reason why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was because we had to wait for our food for quite a while. However, they were very busy, inside and out, so I understand. At least the decor makes for a lovely stay and they were playing great music, to boot.

I personally think that Redwood has one of the best burgers in Portland. The bun is light and fluffy, the beef is perfectly seasoned and always cooked to juicy goodness. I would rate it one notch above Country Cat. I've found the service to be good and never had a bad dish. I'm surprised the restaurant is not more busy for brunch or lunch since it holds its own compared to the other restaurant on Stark. Go visit, and you won't be disappointed.

We went for dinner. The menu is very limited. We were three adults and 1 child. The burger not bad and a good soup. Nice place if you do not care for more options.

Great service !!! Awesome food !!! Well kept secret đ Had the potatoe cakes super crispy !!! Awesome drink menu Good location

I had an amazing sandwich... Until I found a long brown hair. I didn't say anything because I didn't want to ruin my husbands lunch by telling he or the waitress. Totally bummed me out! That for me is a hunger killer and makes me unable to think about anything else. My hubby loved his burger!!

We saw a movie at the Academy theater on 82nd and came out hungry. Across the street was the Redwood (nothing else added like Cafe or Bristro or anything). It is a wood lined room (with a couple of sidewalk tables) and thus quiet noisy but.... The special was two hard shelled tacos and a blackberry margarita for a very good price. Of the four, one chose to have a chicken dinner. I was not expecting much but the tacos were so good, even the salsa. The waitress told us that everything is made in house and it showed. Despite the noise we had a good eating time.

Crisp, fresh, and every table full on a Friday evening. My Brussel Sprouts were excellent and my friend raved about his burger. Pricing was spot on, and I didn't get any pushback for only ordering a starter and a glass of wine.

It's not off the chart great nor horribly terrible but more just a decent place to have a bite. Service was wonderful. Menu had a good offering. A few at our table tried their drinks and were pleased. A good place overall.

A pleasant enough spot for brunch and lunch. Uninspired decor makes it hardly appealing for a romantic meal. Excellent service, however. The hamburger, served on a brioche bun, is very good, as was the bacon-laden BLT on sourdough. Sandwiches come with either a salad or "hand cut" fries. One of us found the fries quite tasty; one of us found them limp and unappealing. The salad, by contrast, is a very generous mixed green salad dressed to your liking. We splurged and had the blueberry fritters with lemon curd for dessert. The fritters were quite nice, and would make an excellent stand-alone breakfast. Redwood is a local restaurant in an out-of-the-way neighborhood in East Portland. There is little reason to visit its environs, so the diner will have to make a special trip. And while the food is good, perhaps Redwood's location ultimately works against it.

Awesome food with inventive dishes. Had the Mac and cheese, Apple and blu salad, veggie burger and marinated skirt steak. Started with corn fritters which were awesome also. Great service. Highly recommend.

Walked by this place a couple times before I actually went in. It used to be Bangkok Bites which was a Thai joint and I never went in there at all. Living in Montavilla I was a little skeptical considering Roscoes and a few other places around there are really good like The Observatory and The Country Cat but this place surprised us pleasantly. Great happy hour menu, awesome atmosphere and cool staff! Welcome to the neighborhood Redwood!

It was girls' night out with 2 local girlfriends. They picked this restaurant because it was reasonably close to my hotel at Cascade Station and because of the good reviews. We were a little skeptical when we walked in and found the restaurant empty. We really liked the interior - all done in dark wood with about 11 tables and a nice big bar with high back chairs. It was casual and cozy. The menu looked really, really good and we couldn't decide what to have so we got our server (who was very personable) to tell us about the various, interesting dishes. The menu is small but has good variety and unusual items. They had a few drinks on special so I ordered a special hot drink because it sounded so good and I thought I was coming down with a cold. It was so good I could have drunk a gallon of it and I must say I never did develop a cold. I think that drink did it! My friends had martinis which they really enjoyed. The food was absolutely amazing! Susie in the kitchen can really cook. We started with chicken wings and they were huge. With them we had cheddar and corn fritters. All 3 of us had the Chilaquiles for our main course. We could not resist after hearing our server's description of what was in them - crispy tortilla strips, roast chicken, green sauce, sour cream, etc. and on top of it all was a fried egg. It was the best Mexican dish I have ever tasted and I love Mexican food. The area is a bit sketchy. I didn't feel comfortable walking around there alone in the dark and had to park a couple of blocks away. But you can tell that it is developing and there are some nice trendy stores and restaurants for several blocks. It won't be long until this is a very thriving district. We think the restaurant was empty because the excellent reviews pertain more to brunch BUT what is good for brunch is often good for dinner too. This is a great little restaurant and we will definitely go back and would recommend it to anyone. The food is creative and delicious!

My daughter and her husband are vegetarians and I'm a carnivore so it's not easy finding the right mix but Redwood fit the bill last night. Wasn't packed with pretentious eaters having to be at the "right" place and loving long waiting lines. Good crowd but a couple empty tables waiting with great service from a young lady that knew what she was serving and wasn't afraid to offer suggestions. Full bar with just enough beer selections to cater to every drinker. Nice fat pork chop with corn fritters for me that came with fancy named topping and all, but it tasted great and that's what matters. Didn't think I was hungry when the kids invited me out to eat but boy did that meal fit the bill and I ate it all. Still remember how good it tasted the next morning.

Because of the terrible traffic in Portland my son only goes to NE Portland for Redwood's Chilaquiles. He says that they are that good they are worth the trouble it takes to get there. Unfortunately the evening we went we were told they had just dropped the Chilaquiles from the evening menu. :( They only serve them now for brunch. Seriously disappointed as were the people on three other tables next to us. We hope Redwood's can put them back on the dinner menu soon. My son opted for the Ahi tuna which was very good and I went for the Tri-tip. Wish I had gone for the tuna because the Tri-tip was very tough even though it was medium rare as I ordered. It also had too much gristle which made it even tougher to eat. I lived in Southern Calif. when Tri-tip first became popular. My brother would visit us once a month and always brought Tri-tip from Santa Maria where it had been introduced in the late 50's. It was always tender and easy to eat. It is almost impossible to find in Texas where I now live so I was disappointed to say the least. But the atmosphere and service was good although a bit slow as they were so busy on a Friday night. So my son and I are going to give Redwoods brunch a try before I head back to Texas. Can't fly all the way to Portland without trying the Chiaquiles that my son assures me are "To Die For".

Redwood is good for whatever you are hungry for! Whether you just want a great burger, or a whole meal, you won't go wrong at this place. Prices are very reasonable and the food is excellent.

This place can not make macaroni and cheese....it's so easy to make and they make it so tasteless....Wasn't impressed by anything we ordered. Will not be going back.

From the apple and blue cheese salad to the pork chops and trout, this place is incredible. Throw in the banana's foster and you have a great dining experience.

Met my friends for a Sunday brunch at Redwood. Was looking forward to trying the house made veggie burger. This sandwich was a great blend of yams, peanuts, cilantro and accented with Siracha aioli. The hand cut fries were an added bonus! Looking forward to going back again to try a few of the drinks from the drink menu. Service was super friendly and accomodating.

This is a relatively small restaurant with good atmosphere and friendly service. The waitress was attentive and provided informative answers to our questions. I had the pan seared trout with Yukon potatoes, lima beans and corn. It was excellent and is highly recommended. If you are in Portland and looking for a good place to eat, I suggest you consider Redwood.

Our daughter suggested we try Redwood and happy that we did. Small, interesting menu. Great appetizers: Brussel sprouts, cauliflower. Nice salads. Wished we could have had option to add a protein. Excellent service.

We were actually aiming toward another restaurant on the block but there was a wait so we checked the menu on Redwood and were taken back by the choices and the prices on the menu and went in. It was a Friday night, about 7:15 and there were only a few tables full. After we were seated there was a steady flow and shortly the place was full. The server was attentive without being over bearing. I ordered a martini which was classic, ample and delicious. We had the cheddar and corn fritter appetizer which was really great, we opted for ranch dressing over the sauce they came with. I am a huge fan of a good beet salad...and the Redwood beet salad is good. It's pretty darn big and about 8.00. It's not overly "fancy" on the presentation... pretty much a chopped beet, greens, nuts, cheese salad which was SO good...perfectly balanced. Noteworthy. My daughter got the grilled vegetable sandwich with side salad. There were pickled veggies in the salad which made it above the norm. She said the sandwich was spectacular, and the ciabatta was "life changing"! I had a bite and the bread actually had me melted in a pile before it hit my mouth. The smell alone was spectacular. However, the flavor of the grilled veggies completed that sandwich experience in a most satisfying way. We finished with the panecotta. I'm not a big dessert fan, so I can't really form an opinion about it. BUT, for a really delicious, fulfilling meal, a cocktail and a dessert and the total at 40.00... I thought it was more than fairly priced. Highly recommended.

Staff is fun & efficient, food is truly delicious, Susie Blue has an adventurous but homey palette & genuine desire to constantly invent new & tasty menu.

The food and service was amazing. The chilaquiles were awesome. I'm Mexican and these are some of the best I've had. Local beer selection.

The night we were there, they just had the power turned back on after being out for several hours, and the restaurant filled up all at once. So its likely this caused some of the food to be a disappointment. We had the trout tostados, but were hard pressed to find any trout on the plate - it was very tasty though. I had the flank steak with was excellent - hubby had clams and spaghetti which he did not care for. Pasta was undercooked and there were very few clams considering the price. BUT i will give them another try as i think the power failure out them out of their groove.

Had a nice dinner at Redwood. Nice menu variety and good service. Ample portions. Nice nightly specials. A bit noisy when busy but a few table are available out on the sidewalk, although not really to comfortable. Enjoyed the dinner. Would return!

I dined at Redwood with friends who live in the neighborhood, on October 11th. It is a bustling place with good food. The two waitresses who helped us, Whitney and Lindsay (sp.?) were extremely busy, yet managed to be both efficient and with a quick repartee to some of our joking. They are to be commended for their level of service. I had the wonderful pan-seared trout and my friends had the chicken pot-pie. I hadnât planned to have dessert, but I did taste the Panna Cotta one of them ordered and it was also excellent. The only item we wish to be brought back on the menuâwe had it 2 or 3 years agoâis the âsimpleâ fried/or roasted? Brussels sprouts with bacon: The current ones, without bacon and different spices, although well-cooked, did not taste as good as the ones they replaced. Overall it was a pleasant experience, and definitely more affordableâeven for a retiree on a fixed income--than most eateries where I live, as much as I like living there. I do miss the variety and quality of fare of Portland. Thank you. Claire

We had dinner right at opening with another couple (have option of Happy Hour or regular dinner menu) - lovely wood paneling, good service, great food - especially the chilaquiles, eggplant sandwich and the pot pie. Beer on tap selection is too limited - only 3 or 4 (they do give you a tasting sample on request). Room was cold on the night we went, but might warm up later in evening. Will definitely go again.

Redwood was recommended to us after we stopped nearby to see some relatives. We had left Seattle earlier in the day and still had some driving to do to reach our goal of Salem, OR. So, we wanted a good, local eatery where we could be in and out in a reasonably short time. Well, with our relatives' help, we found it, and then some. One of us ordered the tostada appetizer while the other had an apple and blue cheese salad...and we were very impressed. Service was quick, staff was friendly, price was right, and most of all, the food was excellent. There's nothing fancy about the décor, but the place is actually very comfortable. For what it is - a comfortable, relaxed, unpretentious café - it is a winner. If you are in this section of Portland, give Redwood a try. You'll be pleased that you did. .
Casual dinner out
The menu items sounded good and then when we sat down, everything coming out of the kitchen looked fantastic. I had the trout which was displayed beautifully and had just the right amount of moistness. My husband enjoyed the hangar steak cooked medium and still was tender and flavorful.
