First class restaurant

By TRVLNYCA |

Service is outstanding. Food is excellent with a vey good variety of sushi and hot dishes. Everything is really fresh. Wine pours are extremely generous by the glass and not any more expensive that any other restaurant. We were celebrating our anniversary and the brought a complimentary dessert. I highly recommend.

A place for luxurious quick lunch

By FatemahQ |

I made a reservation through open table. Once I got there, my table was ready. I ordered the express Lunch that included a salad, 3 options of main course and dessert. Lunch arrived exactly within 6 mins. Everything tasted really good. Service and the staff were very nice and friendly. I highly recommend it.

Good Sushi good prices

By Elly B |

The fish was fresh and the service excellent. They don;t have the range of fish at some of the sushi places in SF but they have the more common ones and that was fine. We enjoyed a delicious meal and were luckily staying in the hotel so had a short trip "home" after dinner.

Late diner when arriving at hotel

By peterrY7563SB |

When staying at the Nikko hotel I went for diner at ANZU. Being alone, I wanted to read somewhat between the courses, and they really honoured my request. Started with a nice soup, followed with a steak. The desert topped the diner, together with an Irish coffee. I really enjoyed the evening.

Great Food and Service

Wonderful sushi in Hotel Nikko

Went here with a friend while traveling for business. We shared several wonderful sushi rolls. The service was attentive and the atmosphere was enjoyable.

A wonderful place for lunch or dinner

By Ron C |

AN ZU at the Nikko Hotel in San Francisco is a pleasant oasis in San Francisco. The service is exceptional and the food is wonderful. The wine is first-rate and the bar staff is fun and knowledgeable.

Not as expected.

By 5heartfamily |

The room is contemporary, and nicely decorated, however the banquet seating is awkward, so opt for a table with chairs. We felt, mistakenly, that a Japanese hotel would serve some tasty Sushi; the menu sounded wonderful, but the food was disappointing. Our "fusion" appetizers were the best part of our meal. My rolls were dry and nearly tasteless, so I asked for some type of sauce. They brought me ponzu and later mayonnaise (!?) which I mixed to form something to garnish my food. It's worth noting that without asking they removed the charge for the items I had to 'doctor'.

Don't come hungry.

By TexanDFWarea |

Had a fixed four course meal. The service and presentation of the food was fabulous but the portions were small and over seasoned. Good quality food doesn't need to be spicy, salty, etc. yet, the dessert had no flavor at all. If atmosphere is important this would be a good restaurant but if you want great food go elsewhere.

Great Hotel Restaurant

By abroadalot |

We never normally touch a hotel restaurant as we love to eat out however after a week of constant sight seeing via New York and Vegas and a massively busy few days in San Fran we checked the menu and went in, What a surprise! Amazing sushi and a hot stone to start followed by excellent steak and a solid pasta dish, Service was excellent throughout the evening and a lovely complimentary desert as we were celebrating our anniversary. Definitely worth a go if your staying or your near to Hotel Nikko, Plus a great bar over the road in the Hilton on the 46th floor open to all to finish the evening off!.

Hotel Restaurant worth Choosing

We were staying at the Nikko, but regardless, I'd go there again. The food and service were superb. It is stylish and cozy at the same time.

Best hotel restaurant and awesome buffets

By 383marilyn |

I love Anzu at Nikko Hotel in San Francisco. I don't usually eat at hotel restaurants because I usually find them overpriced and underwhelming. However, Anzu at Hotel Nikko is very different. They serve fusion Japanese cuisine and everything is super fresh and the buffets are very good value for the price. They have regular breakfast buffets for hotel guests and when one of our friends stayed there last week, we joined them for the Sunday brunch buffet. But every year we also book their Thanksgiving for the family and they have an assortment of dishes from prime rib, turkey, lamb, seafood, sushi, dim sum etc.

Sit by the Counter!

By Emily N |

We had a fantastic time interacting and ordering from the chef directly and the staff was attentive. Sashimi here was very fresh and my friends and I enjoyed the experience!! The tuna truffle carpaccio and beef carpaccio was excellent!

Great seafood and convenient when staying at the Hilton

By log24 |

Really enjoyed our nut crusted salmon dishes and the entire prefix menu. They run out of items quickly as the evening progresses. The icing on the cake is two for one entrees courtesy of the Passport Dining card.

Currently, not really excellent.

By ranran7 |

This restaurant serves Gohan(boiled rice) and Misoshiru(Miso soup) in a buffet style for breakfast. It is extremely good for Japanese people. But, Japanese foods at breakfast time should be improved by Japanese food specialists from Japan. This hotel's Japanese foods are very good, especially for the people who miss Japanese food in U. S., but currently, not really excellent.

Good food in a nice setting.

By Travelnut1022 |

Anzu is located in the Hotel Nikko and is perfect for dinner before a show at Feinsteins. The menu is a mix of Californian and Asian and is very well prepared. They also offer a very affordable pre fixe menu. The setting is lovely, service is very professional and we have always been happy with our food. It's great to eat dinner here and then just walk downstairs to see the show.

Would be a 5-star review with some improvements

By Caroline W |

I came here while in San Fran on business purely because I had a Restaurant.com certificate for $25 discount. The restaurant is located inside the Nikko hotel and my initial impressions were favorable. Once seated I decided on a glass of white wine and a sushi roll. I chose the Anzu roll which was actually really delicious. Shrimp tempura (how can you fail?) and just general deliciousness. While eating the roll, a waiter came by with some bread that had been offered. Just a tad out of sequence!!! It would have been better if the bread had arrived first, obviously. I then chose the Wagyu beef appetizer - not being totally sure what to expect if I'm honest. The waiter arrived with a white dish with coarse salt layering the bottom and, in the middle, a smooth black stone. He cautioned me not to touch it!! The other component was a dish that housed 3 condiment pots and some incredibly thinly sliced beef. He explained the procedure and I dug in. Not only was it fun to "cook" my own beef, but it was extremely tasty. This would be such a fun experience with kids or others but unfortunately I was solo on this occasion. Good food, reasonable service (it could have been a bit more attentive) and a very nice ambience.... All adds up to a solid 4 star review. Next time if they get the bread out on time, I'll up it to 5 stars!

Japanese fair

By Barry H |

This place is located in the Nikko Hotel and was a nice surprise. The concierge at the St. Francis suggested this restaurant and last nights as well. Last night was a total bust and tonight was good. They had a varied menu to appeal to the Susie lovers and others.

We had very good dinners here.

By Linda47Michigan |

My husband and I both chose different meals and we were both pleased with what we ordered. We would certainly return for dinner the next time we visit San Francisco.

Outstanding Food

By kelly t |

Loved the fact that we cooked Wagu steak on a hot stone, such a great idea. lovely restaurant and staff, worth the money

Great cocktails. Food was a little slow at one point.

By D C |

They have some great cocktails. The food is pretty good (slightly expensive) but otherwise, good ambience and good food. Food at one point came really slowly but they made up for it with a free dessert! Good service!

A bit too casual for my taste, but excellent food and service !

By Konstantinos Yaz |

It's a classic business hotel bar - restaurant , so expect to find noisy parties, guests in training suits, people next to you just having drinks etc, so the first impression might be misleading. Nevertheless the food is excellent and so is the service. It is worth it's money!

Sour Sushi with POOR Service AVIOD !!

By NiceGringo |

The Hotel Nikko SF boasts that the restaurant Anzu is one of the best in the city, I beg to differ! The spicy tuna roll was sour, the chef blamed it on a slice of fruit he put in the roll. Bottom line when your selling a roll for $17 dollars, you should not put ingredients to make it taste bad! I complained to the manager, I noticed he was wearing a suit and sneakers, how tacky and unprofessional! While eating dessert the waiter staff started setting the tables for breakfast the next day. The ANZU gets a F bad management & food.

Woo-Hoo -- ANZU

By Jodyrox |

Very pleasant reception and excellent service from our waiter Tommy! This was our first visit to ANZU and to San Francisco. Nice atmosphere. I had the baby beet salad and Mary's Chicken - both were awesomely delicious! My wife had the French Onion soup and the Loch Duart Salmon which was as good or better than she had in Scotland. All said, nice night dining out at ANZU! Oh, and one more thing, they accepted our Restaurant.com gift certificate without question. I say this because we've had several restaurants balk when we presented the gift certificate in the past. Thank you ANZU! We'll be back!

best buffet breakfast and so much more

By wpaapw |

Staying in the hotel lent us to get the buffet breakfast, such a full night before we barely made it though so happy we did, the breakfast was by far the best I've enjoyed in quite some time, being a buffet I'm somewhat skeptical but rest assured should you go you'll understand the accolades, they pay prompt attention that everything is plentiful and hot,I watched them change the eggs at least three times, delicious potatoes and rightfully cooked bacon along with an assortment of cold cuts cereals fresh tasty fruit and then there was the Japanese breakfast items.. too many to list however if you're in the area whether local or tourist try the anzu for their breakfast. You will not be disappointed nor leave hungry.

Now my 6th visit to this restaurant. Global traveler. A++++

By Have Passport Will Travel |

I absolutely love this restaurant. I've ate at some of the best restaurants in the world, this does not disappoint. I live 2,000 miles away and look forward to returning on every visit to SFO. Food is presented as art. Ask for Trina. My waitress the last 3 times over the last 2 years. They have a great wine tasting menu too ($65 per person/food and wine options).

Good Thanksgiving buffet

By Dionne |

Too expensive for what you get. But, we enjoyed our meal, nonetheless. The staff was quite good, though. Visited in November 2013

Wonderful food, lovely service, nice ambiance

By Johanna O |

We enjoyed a great dinner here during our 4 day stay in San Francisco. The food is prepared in front of you (sushi bar) and is lovely. We had a mix of both sushi and warm dishes and were impressed by the quality. Would not immediately expect hotel food to be so good! Will be coming back as soon as we are back in SF!.

Terrific Kobe Burger

By TPFEnterprises |

Had a bar dinner with a nice Cabernet. Great atmosphere, friendly, fine quality. Food nicely presented and an excellent Anzu recipe book on the bar to read!

Just Average

By HipNJMom |

I might rate Anzu slightly above average but only because of its location which was in the Nikko Hotel, which is beautiful and elegant. The food at Anzu was just average or below average; certainly not worthy of the price. The food presentation was interesting and the service was good but the food (we had a variety of sushi) was just ok.

Great sushi in hotel restaurant

By Sian B |

Dinner catch up with an old friend after a 12 hour flight from Australia. Deciding to take the easiest option, we went to Anzu as it was located in our hotel (Hotel Nikko). The sushi bar was a perfect antidote to the stodgy airline food, and we asked for (and received) a delightful selection of Nigiri and sashimi. I was a bit jet-lagged, so I don't remember the specifics, but I considered this a very worthwhile place to start my SF dining experience.

Misled about the menu

By Joel D |

I booked a table here for Thanksgiving Day and asked the hostess on the phone if the menu would be the usual one or a special holiday menu. I was told it was the usual menu. My wife and I arrived at the restaurant only to find out that Anzu was serving a buffet dinner, not their usual a la carte menu. My wife and I do not like buffets, but decided to stay since it was Thanksgiving and we assumed that any of the few restaurants that were actually open would be full. The food was fine, but nothing special. And since it was a buffet, it was mostly room temperature and boring. At the end of meal we got a surprising bill of over $200. An automatic 18% tip was added to the bill for our two-person meal, and the buffet was $70 per person. No buffet is ever worth $70. We were very disappointed. The very next night we went to a restaurant called Wakuriya and spent over $300, and felt every penny was worth it. But I feel the $200 I spent at Anzu was the worse waste of money I've ever spent on food.

Excellent Fish, Not Inexpensive

By Gailyn63 |

We ate here before a show at Feinstein's with another couple. We had sushi, spicy tuna rolls as appetizers, then the black cod and seabass entrees. All of the food was excellent, especially the seabass entree, which had delicate clams in the broth. The sushi and sashimi was fresh and tasty (we had yellow tail, salmon and tuna). We ordered an Austrian gruener veltliner, which was pricey at $59/bottle. The wine list is quite expensive, so consider bringing your own and paying corkage. Service was great. Quite expensive, though they did have a four-course offering that might have been a better value.

Not up to chuff

By nobizit |

This is not a review of the hotel itself (which is gorgeous and I've never stayed in), but of my most experience with the pool and restaurant service there. A San Francisco resident, I bought a day pass to study and swim. I had come before to swim and it's pretty nice (4 star pool). The pool is undergoing renovations, and the hotel has been handling them graciously. So on to the food review. I ordered a salad with oil and vinegar on the side and iced tea, water and cup of ice. I was brought: the salad, all of my beverage requirements, a side of olive oil, and a side of butter. I didn't catch the missing vinegar initially- because I saw the butter. Asked the server about it- and he said, "Oh yes! There's bread!", and went to get me some. Upon his return I informed him of no vinegar. He left again, and came back with plain white vinegar!!! I almost felt bad sending him away to get red wine or balsamic- seriously WHO eats white vinegar with a salad?! I asked him this and he replied that I ought to have specified. I thought this was supposed to be a four star restaurant. Is it not common practice for ladies and gentlemen who ask for oil and vinegar sides for their salad to get such types? Anyway I was disappointed at the lack of attention (2 trips to correct the order), and another trip to fix strange vinegar choice and weird answer the server gave me. Oh, well! -1 star

Great Food!

By L6953YVpaull |

Hotel restaurants always seem to me t be a bit better than other places, yet they are seldom crowded. Anzu was crowded both times we ate here, a testament to its quality and ability to draw patrons in spite of its hotel location. While we all loved everything we ordered, I would especially recommend the 4 course Prix Fixe offering. The courses are each delicious! Our dinner included the black bean soup as its soup of the day and this selection was easily the best black bean soup I ever experienced. For those who order the meal and its optional wine pairings, the treat dining experience is even better. The wine pairings serve to accentuate both the quality of the food and the savoriness of the wines. Each course includes a wine uniquely paired to it and each is a wonderful choice. When traveling in a city far from our home, we seldom eat at the same place twice because there are always so many other great places to try, but we did eat here twice during our 4 day stay because the food was just too wonderful to miss.

High-quality food right in Union Square

By Freelance9 |

I went to Anzu twice during a business trip to San Francisco in October, 2015. The layout was spacious, the ambience was unhurried, the décor tasteful. I stuck to sushi on my dinner visit and I was not disappointed. I don’t usually order “fancy” rolls but I tried one with three or four kinds of fish and it was a delicious and harmonious blend. The sashimi was phenomenal, especially the hamachi. At lunch, I combined sushi with a vegan udon noodle soup that was richer and more flavorful than what I am used to from more downscale noodle shops. One thing that stood out about Anzu was the customer service. The staff made a point of paying attention to the details and I really noticed this. At both meals the greeters at the door were smiling and friendly. Then Andi, the server at dinner, made me feel completely at home with the menu and attentively made sure I had what I needed. Dennis at lunch listened carefully to my request for a type of salad that was not on the menu – a simple green salad – and brought it for me along with the dishes I ordered. I would have been happy with this even if he had not also comped it – very nice touch, Dennis! Great way to build loyalty! Anzu is not cheap. The dinner tab was around $100 and the lunch tab $35. But the food and the great service lived up to the prices. I had been to Anzu before but I had not really appreciated it. This is high-quality food in a part of Union Square that does not have much. I will definitely be back.

Excellent Sushi & Tempura

By The_Loup_Garou |

This was our third visit to ANZU, and we have enjoyed each. It is in a lovely room in the Hotel Nikko, and features excellent Sushi & Tempura. The service, as always, was great, and the servers very helpful at navigating the menu, especially regarding portion sizes of each item. Good wine list, with offerings that mostly pair with the food. Highly recommended.

Excellent flavors

By Elie A |

The flavors that come on each plate are exquisite...The price is also not very high for most plates, I would recommend eating there a few times during your stay...

OK

By Durry-357 |

Went with a group of friends to catch up after a conference. Was expecting Japanese food but was confronted with a limited Japanese menu and a lot of American favorites like cheese burger and mac and cheese. Service was slow and the wine list was limited.

Good Sushi Before the Theater

By wwalleigh |

Anzu is a good sushi restaurant that happens to be in a hotel (Nikko) and very convenient to the SF theater district. It has a quiet and upscale ambiance, competent staff, and definitely tasty sushi. If you are going to the theater, make sure you mention it to hopefully receive a discount on your meal (we received 15% off).

Japanese Breakfast Sucks

By IslandGuy2014 |

For a restaurant in a Japanese owned hotel (Hotel Nikko) I would have expected a better Japanese breakfast buffet. What a surprise. The rice was overcooked and clumpy. The miso-shiru had a soup base that was bland and tasteless. The grilled salmon was tough and not salted enough. The tsukemono was third-rate. For $24 I would have expected better. At least the western offerings looked better although I didn't bother to try anything else. Take my advice and go elsewhere if you want a decent Japanese style breakfast.

Fabulous place for food and ambiance

By AndrewJernigan |

I highly recommend this hotel restaurant for business meetings, or even a quiet drink and snack that is out of the ordinary in a busy day when you aren't even a hotel guest but ready to impress and take a breathe.

Very good service and food... could be 4.5

By lwj |

A quiet, attentive, creative restaurant located in the Nikko Hotel on the second floor. I began with orders of Maguro and Hamachi Nigiri. Both items were very fresh. My entree was the Grass Fed Hanger Steak with Wasabi Mashed Potatoes and Grilled Asparagus. The steak was very tender and cooked to perfection. The Wasabi Mashed Potatoes were good and the wasabi was not overpowering. My choice of sauce was the Bordeaux Bordelaise which I highly recommend. Every time that I have dined at Anzu, service has been always been excellent.

Good but not fabulous

By Susanlynn53 |

We had been on website and saw the menu and when we arrived the menu didn't have several of the items they advertised. Waitress said oh they probably didn't tell us to change or something else very vague. Sushi ok, nothing extraordinary about it. We were at a round table and midway through the meal the waitress comes by and says let me expand the table and made the table larger. Great but somewhat awkward as the settings had to be moved. Kids like The Rock which was a beef appetizer. The three of them had filet as entrees and I had rock cod. I did not finish it as it was actually not appealing. A flavor I did not care for at all. I think there would be better options than this restaurant. Also it was a Saturday night and not many people were in the restaurant so the vibe was pretty sad.

Very stylish restaurant with good sushi

By Spanien_Urlauber_13 |

We came here to redeem our Travelzoo voucher which was really worth it since this restaurant is quite expensive. It's very stylish but if we had to pay the normal prices we wouldn't have gone here. The sushi is absolutely gorgeous in quality, the restaurant itself is nice. The waiters are not very attentive and sometimes you miss a smile or two but I've seen worse. All in all a good place for sushi.

Excellent Service, Delicious Food

By LaCrosseLady |

Normally, when visiting a new city, I don't choose to eat in hotel restaurants, but after a long day of touring, my husband and I didn't want to walk far from our own hotel near Union Square, so we choose to eat at the Anzu in Hotel Nikko. We were not disappointed, as very pleased at the serene and beautiful atmosphere of the place. The entrees were moderately priced; I would not rate this with $$$$ as it is at the top of the Anzu reviews. Entrees were in the $25 to $40 range, moderate prices for downtown SF. My husband had a beef dish, and I had the organic chicken with ginger lemongrass sauce. Both were delicious (we like to share) and each dish had a side, vegetable, and sauce that one could choose. We also had wonderfully fresh sushi to start. We had wine with our food. Staff was very attentive, and the restaurant was not crowded on a Monday.

Excellent restaurant

By LCX00 |

We ate twice at Anzu with my family (my wife, myself and two kids 15 and 16). The food was excellent, both Japanese style (sushi etc.) and more international style (excellent filet mignon and fish). They serve reasonably good wines by the glass (yet not inexpensive) and have a good (but not very large) wine cart. One of the things we appreciated most was the very low level of noise (in my experience often a major problem in American restaurants): you could speak without shouting, something we could not do on most of our other dinners in San Francisco... The bill for 4 people (3 appetizers, 4 entrees and 2 desserts, beverages incl. 2 glasses of wine, incl. taxes and 20% tip) was around 340 US$: not cheap but worth the quality of the place. Excellent service.

Great service and breakfast with a twist!

By Lewis F |

Rice balls wrapped in prosciutto with wasabi hollandaise sauce. Served with vegetables! Different and very nice. Comfortable surroundings.

Elegant surroundings, well executed modern sushi

By NoCalDad |

A group of 4 business colleagues and I spent the evening of the NCAA men's basketball finals at ANZU. Since the game was on, we asked for and were granted seating at a large round table in front of the screen. As it was a Monday, the place was lightly populated, so we basically had our own waiter. We tried 3 selections from their extensive sake list, with the help of staff. We shared a deluxe sashimi plate, and several appetizers and rolls, which were all/mostly delicious. Service was first rate, which one might expect for a $300 bill. The only downside was the lack of nigiri offerings, which our waiter explained was the norm on Mondays (sr. sushi chef's day off?). I would recommend this establishment for special occasions.

OK food; very slow service

By too_few_trips_1 |

We picked Anzu because of its proximity to a conference. The food is fine -- nothing memorable, but convenient. What was disappointing was the pace of the service. It seemed inexplicably slow. Requests for service seemed to fall on deaf ears.

Fabulous express lunch menu

By Martin P |

Highly recommended for lunch - in the Nikko hotel, once you've found the restaurant location within the building on the mezzanine level. Good value with a small choice of Asian fusion style food with a great refreshing cooler on offer the day I dined. A full a la carte menu is also available. Attentive service without being overbearing. One small negative - lighting is minimal inside the venue. No sunglasses required even on a sunny day!

Awesome!

By carolyn0017 |

Wonderful food, wonderful service! This was a real gem. The Salmon was absolutely wonderful and my husband had the 72 hour beef. One of the best meals we had in San Francisco!

High end hotel prices with sub-high end hotel food and service

By SANTraveler8 |

We ate here four times during our stay, twice for breakfast and a couple of times for lunch. The restaurant atmosphere is nice but it has other failings. Once we had the buffet and once ordered a la carte off the menu. Disappointing either way. They charge high end hotel prices (around $25 for the buffet per person) but the food and service is sub par. On the buffet, the food was standard and plentiful. But not outstanding. And the pastry selection and quality is truly pathetic. My wife had the Japanese options and said they weren't bad but just not great (we have lived in Japan a lot). This in a Japanese-owned hotel no less Off the a la carte menu we had the Anzu breakfast egg special. We ordered poached eggs. Normally we would have gotten the eggs benedict but once we saw that it came with a "sushi rice cake" instead of some sort of break, we decided against it. The regular poached eggs came in a cup (so you couldn't easily put it on your toast) and were watering and hadn't been drained properly. The lunch menu has some good things--the "express lunches" are recommended. My wife's pastrami sandwich was greasy. But in general this restaurant is trying to be "Pan-Asian" too much and failing at both instead of just serving both types of food and doing a good job on each. The wait staff works quite hard and knows what they are doing but yet the service is often quite slow and not attentive. Clearly they have a management and organizational problem somehow.

Absolutely Excellent

By Bill R |

We travel a lot to S. F. and this restaurant was a great surprise with really first rate food and service. We went there on our last evening and, while it was full, the service was very good. There is also a very nice selection of wine and drinks and the decor is excellent. I had the Kobe Beef burger and my wife had a variety of Sushi. I think our next trip we will just stay in the Nikko Hotel.

Amazing experience

Amazing experience in this beautiful restaurant inside the Nikko Hotel in San Francisco... Delicious plate and beautiful fusion experience

Very good location, expensive

By Oncofighter |

This restaurant is located centrally at the Mikko hotel near the Hilton Hotel in downtown San Fran. The food is ok but expensive.

Outstanding Sushi

By Sissycat57 |

The food was amazing. The atmosphere was beautiful with fast service. Very professionally, great customer service. Drinks were great. A must visit for great sushi with family and friends.

Great Dinner

By TRwilbury |

My colleague and I had dinner here at the end of our Business trip. We had the occasion for a small celebration and Anzu fulfilled that perfectly. Its a smart, stylish place firstly and I loved the décor. We sat at the counter and the excellent chefs chose us a selection of dishes which we loved. I might add they know how to mix a decent cocktail too - as one might expect in a hotel of the calibre that Nikko is. There is a bar too - and I'd suggest its also a great place to met for cocktail hour before you head off elsewhere in San Francisco. Will definitely come back

Fine Breakfast

By Traveling Key |

We stopped in for the buffet before heading out for the day. The fare was Asian/American fusion and they make pancakes upon request.

Breakfast

By Reasonable50 |

Very good breakfast buffet. Choice of either American or Japanese. My husband preferred the American with sausage, bacon, cheese and eggs. A will make your eggs to order of you do not like scrambled. I preferred the Japanese breakfast with salad, miso soup, rice, fish and natto (fermented soybeans). Plenty of fruit, yogurt and other healthy items available. All of breakfast was aesthetically presented. Nice.

Incredibly delicious

By Soozi |

To be honest, hotel restaurants can really be a hit or a miss -- generally they are passable. Very rarely are they of the quality of Anzu. The food at this establishment is beyond delicious, and everything is so fresh. I had the best steak fillet I have ever had in my life -- it was so tender that I barely needed a knife to cut it, and it nearly melted on my tongue. The prices are somewhat high, but when the food is this good, you don't mind paying for the quality. They also have a incredibly full breakfast buffet (or you can order from the menu) that has everything from eggs, breakfast meats, fruit, grains, yogurt, breads, salads, soups, fish....the list goes on. Truly an excellent spread, and scrumptious! And their coffee is out of this world!! The wait staff is incredibly friendly, helpful, and eager to assist you. The management automatically adds a customary 18% tip to the total of every bill, regardless of the number of people in your party, even if only one, so just be aware of that. You are welcome to add more gratuity if you like. I am rating the "value" portion of this review as "very good," simply because I enjoyed my steak so much that I was wishing it was bigger (it was 8 oz.). I wanted more! ;-) Do yourself a favor and order the fillet....you will not be sorry.

Fell short

By Ron S |

I actually cancelled a reservation at another restaurant for the convenience of Anzu. The menu looked good and since this was the night before departure I decided to stay close. Both my partner and I ordered the prix fix dinner. One had the gnocchi and the other the chicken. The wait staff was great. Very attentive and efficient. The food was standard however. Although tasty it was just standard. I wish I had not cancelled my reservation at Thoughts Style Cuisine which got better reviews. Breakfast buffet is great.

Asian fusion treat

By Three S |

Elegant venue inside Hotel Nikko. Everyone starting from the hostess to the waiters, is warm and friendly. My husband ordered prix fixe ($41) and I ordered the truffle hamachi and misoyaki black cod. Fresh warm bread with softened butter was gracious way to start the meal. Gorgeous presentation of each dish. Tiny poke presented in a silver cone: tiny but tasty. Truffle oil, onion, and caviar complimented the hamachi. The dressing was so good that we soaked it up with bread! Caesar kale salad worked well. Parmesan cheese was generously distributed and salad decorated with radish slivers and fried chick peas. The flavorful dressing was perfect for kale. Misoyaki black cod is not to be missed. Served in a broth with edamame ravioli, shiitake mushrooms, and slivers of veggies, it's the quintessential Asian fusion dish. Black cod was perfectly cooked and just the right portion. The pan seared salmon, which was prepared in a macadamia crust, was exquisite. The texture could be described as "fluffy". Delicate, moist, it was supported by the crust. Accompanying the fish was a very nice black rice, topped by a poached egg. Final touch was panna cotta served with berries. Clean refreshing finish to a delightful meal. Kudos to waiter Acen for excellent recommendations and to manager Robert for attention to customer service.

Nicely non-pressured experience to be enjoyed often

By WGibson648 |

I did NOT come here wanting to challenge the sushi chef, but his standard fare was so good, I wanted to see what he could do with the shackles off. I was NOT disappointed. Start with the rolls and the Negiri on the menu. If you do not want mango, just tell the server … Spider Rolls were superb, even without the mango. Sake served cold, and attentively refilled. Then, ask the chef to be "creative." Your response will only be "wow." Now, this is not inexpensive, but the value for the price paid is extremely high; I strongly recommend.

Anzu - Amazing Food, Service and Hospitality.

By LePetitePapillon |

Located within Hotel Nikko, Anzu offers an amazing setting, service and menu selection. we had a 5 Star experience and will be back.

Bland, Boring

By PlatinumHoney |

Nice restaurant located in the Nikko hotel. Good attentive service, but the food quality just plain average. The nut crusted salmon was good, but the duck breast was totally bland and boring and not even crisp (although the meat quality was fine) and the cod was just swimming in liquid and tasteless despite. The specialty rolls we had as starters also blah. Got to get some spice into this place because right now, bland and boring.

Wasabi Prawns...delicious

This review is actually for the ANZU To You food truck that was parked on the green in front of Macy's stockton st. It was almost freezing temp in San Francisco today, and yet I enjoyed my lunch due to this truck. I had the wasabi prawn ($10) dish consisted of quite a few large prawns lightly fried to perfection (see photo), tossed with asian styled slaw and topped with some wasabi sauce? The dish is delicious, and I would go back and tried other items another day. I have always wanted to tried ANZU at the Hotel Nikko but never seem to make it there. This food truck is a lovely intro and I would definitely check the actual restaurant out soon.

Great Seafood - Sushi

Fresh Oysters, Mussels and other seafood. Sushi was fresh and imaginative Ceviche was amazing Great atmosphere and service

Pure bliss

By Audrey S |

My fiance and I are pretty spoiled having eaten fresh sashimi in Japan but was quite surprised by the freshness of the sashimi plate. We ordered the 15 piece sashimi plate, Niman Ranch Flat Iron Steak + asparagus + kimchi fried rice + chimichurri sauce, and an extra side of kimchi fried rice to share. The service was amazing, the food was incredible. The steak was juicy and cooked to the best medium rare I've ever had. The kimchi fried rice served with the steak was ok. I definitely suggest ordering the side since it comes with a poached eggs and a shishito pepper. I'm hoping to come back for my birthday 😁

Would not go back

We chose this based on reviews. The hotel restaurant is beautiful, and that's about the best thing I can say. Our server was persona non grata, most of the time. One salad, the kale Caesar, was pretty good, but the other one was a beet crab thing that was weird, see photo. I love beets and I love crab, but the two don't need to be on the same plate. Our sushi rolls were mushy, but pretty. We got the Waygu beef thing that you cook yourself on a rock, and that was very cool. The sauces were not great. The salted caramel pot de creme was way way too salty. It was a very expensive meal, and we were disappointed in the quality and the service.

Impeccable food and service

By freakincheeses |

We ate breakfast, lunch and dinner here in different dates and we were never disappointed. The breakfast buffet has a great variety of choices. Everything we tried was delicious. The sushi for dinner was amazing. Beautiful fresh fish combined with well concocted drinks made of our dinner a special experience.

Upscale Japanese Restaurant

By LeopoldsFriend |

We were staying in another hotel across the street and found Anzu on Open Table app, looking for a place for lunch. It was a little difficult to find on a second floor of the hotel, as we expected the restaurant to be on a street level, but it was better. The place is elevated from the surrounding, less than perfect, neighborhood and it shines with very nicely done decorations. The food was very good, the service was flawless. Would consider coming here for sushi and dinner in the future.

Yum!!

Excellent service, super fresh sushi. Super nice atmosphere. It took about 10 minutes to get seated and three people checked back with us during that time. The food was delicious and quick!

Great breakfast, dinner needs a bit work

By mikiemd |

The buffet breakfast was awesome. For the price you had a fantastic variety of foods to choose. The pancakes were the best we have had at any restaurant. We were not as familiar with the Japanese items that were there for breakfast, so did not try any of those. Bacon was extra crisp and not overly greasy which was a nice change from other restaurants. We went for the prix fixe dinner with wine pairings. With the room we had one glass of wine for the table, so the waitress was kind enough to give us a half glass each. The food was good, with the salmon being the best. The wine pairings were OK for the most part, but the wine pairing with the salmon left much to be desired. For some reason, the food and drink were coming at much too fast pace. It would have been nicer to have a more leisurely meal. Interestingly enough, both breakfast and dinner were not very crowded, as well as the bar on a Sunday evening. We would still go back and eat here again when we return.

Quiet & elegant with very good service

By lwj |

Located on the second level of the Hotel Nikko, Anzu is a quiet restaurant with an upscale feel. I had dinner here with a friend and found the food to be good. Service was very attentive and the atmosphere was relatively quiet when we dined. The Nigiri that we ordered was very fresh and the selection was adequate. The Yasai Special Roll had Avocado, cucumber, inari, sprouts, yama gobo & lettuce and was very good. We ordered the Macadamia Nut Crusted King Salmon which had Balinese black rice, jidori egg, sea grass & kizami wasabi buerre blanc. It was well presented but slightly overcooked. Overall, the restaurant was pleasant with very good service. If I am in the City and need to choose a place to eat, I would probably consider dining here again.

Decent food, great for sushi fans

By edward19 |

This is a very nice restaurant in the Nikko Hotel. Room is nice looking. Staff is friendly. Food is very good. I had the trilogy of crab dish with a fried soft shell crab and a rolled crab dish. I particularly liked the fried crab. Recommend this, but particularly for fans of Japanese style raw fish and fish rolls.

Very, very bad

By Pont1234 |

I came to the restaurant on Saturday night.I bought a coupon from Restaurant.com, since Anzu was one of the restaurants in SF I wanted to check. My God!! I could not have been more disappointed!! It is actually the first time ever I write a bad review but this one really deserves it!! The food we ordered was: a Tataki Maki, fried charred scallops. The scallops were breaded and the taste of the bread was much stronger than the scallops, themselves. We also ordered an asparagus soup... I needed to add salt to it... totally tasteless...As a main course, my partner ordered a sashimi... so expensive for what you eat!! it was really average... I ordered the farro verde risotto... again I had to add salt twice... I have never eaten such a tasteless risotto before!! But that is not all... when we were about to pay, the waiter gave us the bill with the tip included... he said "I added it, so you do not have to worry about it"!!! I thought tips were decided by the customer... we did go with a coupon of $25 dollars, we spent a total of almost $90.... even if we come with a coupon, it is not legal to add the tip onto the bill!!! We, consumers, decide how much to tip and this all depends on the quality of the service given!! isn´t it so?? The coupon does tell you to tip the waiter on the total amount but nowhere it says that the waiter will charge you for the tip!! I really do not think I have ever been so disappointed at a restaurant in my life...

It was fine

I really enjoyed the atmosphere. Food was quality a bit pricey but it is California. Enjoyed the rock and the foei gras. Sushi is also very fresh.

Anniversary Dinner Decent Food

By Julieanne H |

We have thought about dinning here for years, but ended up going elsewhere. This year for our anniversary we stayed at the Hotel Nikko so it seemed natural for us to have our anniversary dinner here. There was a happy anniversary wish when we checked in, but not nothing else. The wait staff was odd and did not know about the menu then made up stuff about the menu items which was very wrong! They also forgot things we ordered more than once. We also didn't like the cheap wooden. Chop sticks who we were told were supplied because the patrons still the real ones. Quite odd for a fine dinging establishment. We ordered the hot stone beef which was fun but not a worthwhile purchase. My husband order from the left side of the menue and had the chicken which was okay. I ordered the duck breast which was fabulous, however it was so because I ordered it with the star anis demi glaze rather than the bland chimichuri sauce that it comes with. The star of the evening was the side order we ordered: the mushroom bread pudding. It was quite possibly one of the most delicious items I have ever eaten! Will be back because of ''tis menu item!!!

Elegant dining for a special occasion

By spahopper123 |

Very attractive and elegant space. There 6 people in our party and we were set up at a nice table in the center of the room with plenty of room all around. Several of us chose to have the 4 course dinner with wine pairings. Everyone enjoyed everything that was ordered. The duck was especially good. (not part of 4 course menu) It was an expensive dinner, but we were splurging for a special occasion

Suprisingly good for a hotel restaurant. And tasty array of complimentary snacks served with drinks.

By Beetlejuice6 |

Delightful atmosphere and bar.The food was excellent and innovative. It was not inexpensive but the convenience of "eating in" trumped the price. Service was attentive without being intrusive. All good.

Good for a hotel restaurant

By Global Travelers Unlimited |

Pretty interesting place here for a good business dinner. Some really good sushi including the marquee ANZU roll which we ended up ordering 3 of them. Excellent service and a good alternative if you're looking for sushi last minute or staying in the hotel. Recommended.

DE LECT A BULL

By bernbernbabybern |

My husband Rueben and I were celebrating our 3rd anniversary in San Francisco at the Hotel Nikko. Our concierge, Jimmy, was so kind to us to recommend Anzu. Fantastic presentation. Our waiter, who also named Nikko, spilt a little of my cabernet on the table, so he brought us some appetizers to smooth things over. Absolutely classy.

Try the (japanese) breakfast.

By worstmomintheworld |

We ate here our last day at the Nikko. I wish we ate here earlier since the food was fabulous and reasonably priced for a hotel restaurant. My eldest son had the japanese breakfast buffet. While the whole buffet looked fabulous, this was a special treat. Luckily, the choices outside the breakfast were creative and delicious. Not just the usual omelet choices you get if you skip the buffet.

Great sushi in a hotel restaurant

By RonK53 |

I am never disappointed when I dine at Anzu. Fresh fish prepared by a veteran sushi chef. You can sit at the sushi bar or get a table. Great selection of sake as well as other beverages. Friendly servers and reasonable prices all make for a memorable dining experience.

Good good, nice place

Been here for business dinner. Good food, nice location, will surely consider for future trips to San Francisco. Very nice sushi

Pleasant dinner, good special occasion restaurant

By sfyakko |

Smartly decorated, inventive menu and a very nice environment. The $42 prefix referred to as the "tasting menu" is an excellent value with 3 courses. The food was tasty and most in our group enjoyed the 5 spice chicken entree. One of the best examples of fusion is being able to enjoy sushi and tomato basil soup at the same time. Other choices included sashimi and salad all of which were standard acceptable restaurant fare. Having eaten here before it was consistent without major surprise. I found the service to be below average for this scale restaurant. Our waitress was not friendly and lacked a smile from the moment she took our order. We were having a birthday dinner and I included that message in our reservation and reiterated it when I called to change the number of guests. I explained that I didnt want to have to whisper the word birthday to our waitress. Reception said they were aware of the birthday and had the guest of honor's name in the reservation. When the deserts came out there was no mention so I finally asked our waitress who said she knew nothing about it. (frustrating). To their credit, they brought out a complimentary dessert and sang happy birthday. In the end we wonder if a group of six meaning a guaranteed gratuity means they don't have to try.... All this being said, Anzu has redeeming qualities and while our experience was by no means phenomenal, we will be returning again.

Surprisingly wonderful

By Chad B |

When I say surprising I didn't mean I thought it was going to be marginal. Everything about it looked amazing, but when we arrived and looked at the menu, it was way more than sushi and asian food. There was a white charcoal grilled section that included a few steaks and some seafood and it was fantastic. We did have some sushi and it was wonderful. The drinks were creative and very good. All in all it was excellent.

Not bad for a hotel restaurant

By Alnosh |

We arrived late and tired into SFO and visited Anzu in a pinch with a large group. While I would not consider this a good for groups type place they made accommodations for us in the lounge area and off we went. The lychee martinis were a big hit and the food was good. The menu did not have many of the standards you would see at your local sushi bar as the restaurant refers to itself as "California Fusion Japanese". How about we get over ourselves and add avocado roles to the menu!! The staff was totally accommodating and made the roles we requested. We went home happy though our wallets were lighter than one would have expected but such is life when one takes advantage of food at a hotel restaurant.

Vacation

Excellent sushi, selection is limited though. Priced average for the area. Connected to Hotel Nikko a Japanese theme hotel

I would have expected more

By Cacabesa |

Being at Nikko hotel I had high expectations from Anzu. Don't take me wrong the restaurant in elegant, the waiter stuff attentive and the food is well prepared but I didn't get the woa factor. We went for lunch and the sushi selection was more then limited.( only 2 choices basically ). The burger was good but lack condiments. Well will give them one more chance for dinner.

What does this mean?

By PDZ320 |

I was in San Francisco for a conference and I was lucky enough to be invited to a lunch at this restaurant in the Nikko hotel. The restaurant is on a mezzanine overlooking the hotel's lobby and it has views of the city's streets. We were there at the peak of the lunch hour and were informed that some dishes were going to take some time to prepare since the kitchen was being overwhelmed. I chose a simply Wagyu burger, while my colleagues chose the lunch specials to ensure fast service. Any sushi or sashimi requests would be handled within a 1/2 time period. All the dishes were visually appealing and served within 20 minutes. My colleagues appreciated their salmon dishes. I could say though that using Wagyu beef to make a burger is a waste of perfectly good meat. The restaurant is confusing as it seems to want to cater to a japanese cuisine and an American one as well. I am not sure it succeeds. I also thought that the service was pretentious for such a mid-scale restaurant.

Quiet restaurant in Hotel Nikko

By clowjung |

We went there because their menu was appealing to my son for his 18th birthday. We went on a Thursday so there weren't many people. The service was attentive and the server was helpful. We started with the sashimi platter, oysters, smoked salmon belly, and the rock. The fish and oysters were very fresh. The salmon belly was ok. The rock was fun since we cooked raw slices of Wagyu steak on a hot rock. For the entree, we had the lamb which was good. The duck breast and beef strip loin was also good. My daughter didn't care for the salmon but she said it wasn't bad. My fish of the day was good. They gave my son a dessert with happy birthday written in chocolate on the plate rim which was really thoughtful even though we were really full by the end of the meal. All in all, it was a memorable evening for us.

Great meal in Hotel Nikko

By EnjoyTraveling64 |

Went with friends for dinner. It wasn't crowded when we arrived around 7:45 p.m. It is a pretty small restaurant on the second floor of Hotel Nikko but worth finding. We started with "the rock" which was think beef that you cooked on a hot (500 degrees) stone. There were 3 sauces and each were good but the carrot sauce was my favorite. The beef was moist and cooked quickly on the rock. We also had the duck summer roll that was delicious. For the entree I had the Misoyaki black cod that was tender and in a delicious broth. For dessert, i had the cheesecake that came with a berry ice cream and again, delicious. The service was excellent throughout the meal. Each thing I had was really wonderful and would definitely go back.

Amazing breakfast buffet

By TaxLass |

I love this restaurant, inside the Nikko Hotel, for their amazing breakfast buffet. In addition to traditional American options, they also offer a full range of Japanese options. There are literally dozens of choices and everything is very well prepared. Service is top notch.

Excellent Taste!

By Nicole Buzzing |

They specialize in Japanese cuisine and are definitely doing it right! We had to move our reservation time on short notice and they were quite accommodating. Definitely a place where you dress at least "smart casual". My fiance ordered the Titus sushi roll and we both loved it (he's been to japan and said Anzu's was better). I had the Tataki Maki which was good, but didn't come close to the Titus. For mains we ordered the Grilled Loch Duart Salmon (grilled pineapple, sweet corn puree, sepia butter and grilled crown squid) & the evening special: Ono fish with spring veggies, cauliflower puree, roasted potatoes). We shared a bit and both were good, but the salmon was preferred between the two (Ono fish itself was bland). Service was a bit slow, but there appeared to be one main server and a few "helpers", so not sure if it was related to staffing. We also got a complimentary dessert as we got engaged the day before, so it was a nice experience overall. Definitely not for those on a modest budget, but a lovely evening out.

Umami!!

By cheekoon t |

We had dinner at this restaurant at Hotel Nikko where we stayed before leaving for the airport, and wished we had eaten there earlier. Anzu prides itself on its "epicurean ingenuity" fusing Californian cuisine with Asian flavours, and we found ourselves hard pressed to decide from the interesting sounding menu. In the end, we settled on their signature misoyaki black cod in a ginger truffle broth and what they call The Rock - thinly sliced wagyu beef self-cooked on a Japanese river stone brought to the table sizzling hot, accompanied by 3 different sauces. For starters, we had the truffle hamachi with yuzu vinaigrette. All yum, and double yum, or as they say, umami!! There were other interesting options on the menu we wished we had room to try, but that would have to wait for another time when we return. The prices were quite acceptable, compared to a nearby coastal cuisine restaurant the concierge directed us to the night before. We far more enjoyed our meal at Anzu. What is lacking is the ambience. This is the same restaurant for breakfast and dinner and it would add to the evening dining experience if they dressed up the restaurant fittingly with simple touches like flowers.

Great option in the area

By Han Su K |

Inventive eastern influenced meals in an elegant setting. The menu tries hard and looks great, the execution is unfortuantely just average. It's still an very good to excellent meal, just won't be the greatest meal of your life.

Nice atmosphere & food, average service

By JVM-Milford-MI |

Entertained a customer for breakfast during Oracle Open World. The buffet was impressive and the food quality in general was excellent. It’s a very nice restaurant. Disappointments included the service, which was almost nonexistent and the higher prices.

Good Hotel Restaurant

By AHIDAD |

I started with maguro which was excellent. My main course was a tasty filet mignon with great vegetables and decorated with lobster bits. As you can tell from the selections, they have both Japanese and "American" style foods. The service was great. The place is pricey, but very good.

Best Breakfast Around

By JVM-Milford-MI |

A hidden gem. Located on the second level beyond the lobby of the Nikko Hotel the Anzu has both American and Japanese creations. Most impressive is their breakfast buffet. Great for business meetings, families or couples. Enjoy.

Yum!!!

The atmosphere here was great. We enjoyed our salad, salmon dinner and drinks. We also enjoyed a quick breakfast that was both American and Japanese. Yum!!

Modern Asian Cuisine Delivered with Superbly

By capriskman |

The Asian cuisine is executed well with a modern flair. My visit at lunch time found the restaurant nearly empty, however, it permitted very attentive service from the staff, which made for a nice treat. The restaurant is a modern Asian decor that delivers a tranquil atmosphere. The location is on the upper level of the entry hallway can be bit hard to locate when entering from the main hotel entrance.

Very, very good buffet breakfast
