Not as enthused as most

By Nancy F |

Barbecue is a very personal and taste dependent thing... that said my 40 year old daughter thinks their hamburger is one of the best she has ever eaten. I ordered ribs and a side chicken breast. Each of us at the table said our ribs were well cooked and spot-on. How wild we were about the sauce varied. The others who had eaten there once before said that their first visit the ribs were much drier and less inspiring. The chicken breast to my taste was not worth eating and I actually left it. It had to do with the underlying spice in the coating which we all tried to identify and think it was allspice. It really did not taste good to me. The collard greens were my favorite. Most of what I tasted was very heavily salted. I thought out of balance. Wait staff was very good so absolutely no negative comments about service.

Really good meat

By MiddlePillar |

Got take out for Mother's Day and all the meat was excellent. One family member noted that no dipping BBq sauce had been included though. I have one complaint. I was really looking forward to the hush puppies but they were ghastly. Really awful. What are they thinking putting all that sugar into the batter? Unless you want deep fried corn cake...pass.

Excellent BBQ and Beer

By Kayaktherogue |

We were so happy we found this place. We started with the deviled egss and they were excellent. We then had the BBQ pork and washed it all down with some tasty beers. Everything was excellent including the service.

Oh My!

By Rhett S |

Best brisket in Portland. The pork dishes are excellent as well. The fried chicken is famous and rightly so. The restaurant is run by the same people who own Laurelhurst Market, and they know meat. One of the things I like about this place is how ecumenical it is about regional BBQ and Chicken. Real Texas brisket, Memphis ribs, Carolina chopped pork (chopped, not pulled, y'all). I have lived in or spent significant time in KY, NC, TN, TX and have come to love each area's take on BBQ. Couple of personal nits to pick. The peppered vinegar on the table is too sweet for my liking, however my collards didn't really need any. The mustard sauce is a woeful version of NC mustard and vinegar sauce. The regular and hot Ozark sauces are great. The place is a little off the beaten track in the Selwood area.

Sign says OPEN. Rev's says CLOSED

By Grantman66 |

I stopped in at Reverend's BBQ two night ago. It was 8:50. Sign said open, the place was 80% full and food clearly coming off the grill. When, I was with my wife and two kids, I asked if we could order take out and have a beer while we wait, the waitress informed me that they were closing in 10 min's and couldn't serve us. I don't get around to much but I get around to know I will trade 10 years of business for one night of a crappy attitude. Thanks but no Thanks Reverend's BBQ. To many options that provide better service and seem to appreciate that customers are what pays the bills and keeps the lights on!!!

B-day dinner

We ere a large family gathering to celebrate my son's birthday. The ambience and service were great and everyone enjoyed what they ordered.

BBQ and Beers

By Crowso |

One of my neighborhood go to spots. BBQ pork sandwich and a local brew on top with amiable ambience is just the ticket. Menu includes brisket and other BBQ favorites. Collard greens are a great side. Friendly staff and good service in a lively neighborhood on SE 13th in the Sellwood District. Have a good happy hour or dinner, and the stroll 13th or walk over to Oaks Bottom Park for nice views of the city or a walk in nature along the Willamette River east bank.

Missing the flavors

By Arctic_O_Ring |

Ordered the Chicken gumbo, a very fluid dark bowl of liquid arrived. The roux was bunt, no filling other than the roux. It came with a cup of rice to add, which was not near enough. Ordered another cup of white rice, told it would be another $2. For $11 bowl of liquid roux. Wow. Companion ordered the brisket, more than a third was marbling, and had to be discarded. Smoke flavor was just not complete. They need to either smoke another few hours or change the formula. Business lunch, sorry to many places on the East side of the city, not recommended. My issue just arrived from the south and this does not rate.

Fantastic Food and Service

By Laurabaldschun |

Having a blast at Reverend. Delicious food and terrific service. The hush puppies were very tasty with a smoky sweet flavor. Fried chicken, sausage, pork rib, and brisket are yummy. Angie, our server, is awesome!

Love it to death

By T3079KDstevenb |

I make it a point to go to the Reverends every time I visit Portland. It is consistently great. The portions are generous. The wedge salad is a meal in of itself. The ribs have a sweet smokiness and are fall off the bone tender. This should be your go to BBQ joint.

Rigid policy no exceptions

By Malice6 |

We tried to order a small meal on the kids menu along with two adults meals because I am elderly and had a light appetite. There were no other small portions on the menu We were told we couldn’t order a child meal unless one of us was under 12 no exceptions. I ended up ordering a full sized sandwich which as predicted was excessive amount of food and couldn’t finish and their policy won and more than half my bbq sandwich went to the garbage. Instead of accommodating a customer with a light appetite or suggesting a half sandwich . They made a big deal of their inflexible policy. By the way I have enjoyed much better BBQ in many places where nobody dictates what customers may order. The customer is usually right and the mostly empty place at peak lunch hour shows some others are not fans of this faux BBQ restaurant

So So BBQ

By Tracey |

We arrived around 1 pm on a Monday. Super cute place. Greeted right away and asked to take a seat anywhere. Nice outdoor seating but we preferred indoors today. Hush puppies were delish and nice and hot, but 5 for $8 seemed expensive to us. Hubby ordered pork ribs with a piece of chicken, Mac and cheese and collards. Ribs were tender and had good smoke but they were small. Collards were yummy, but the Mac and cheese had no seasoning and had a strange corn flake topping. Chicken was decent. I ordered brisket and bbq beans. Beans were amazing with a bit of meat in every bite. Brisket had good smoke but was SUPER fatty, meaning that it was more fat than meat. We got the caramel cheesecake to go. It was dense and tasty but had Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal as a weird topping. Serving staff seemed nice but they never checked back in with us and including tip, lunch was $90 which seemed very expensive.

Thumbs up

By TJSullivan |

The food is thoughtful and delicious here. BBQ is not my first choice cuisine, but they won me over with the extra effort they make here. The sides were delicious and they have portions of all sizes. You don't have to get a gigantic plate here, which I appreciated. My food had a unique flavor, suggesting some talent in the kitchen. Great, friendly service. Comfortable, casual vibe. One of my favorite places in the neighborhood. Been twice and haven't seen any kids in the place, so I'd say it has more of an adult vibe. Good beer and bar.

Great BBQ!

By Mark A. |

Through Uber Eats, I ordered the BBQ Meat Platter ($74.95). It was a lot of food, enough for a couple days. It includes brisket (thickly sliced, tender and delicious), pulled pork (equally tender and flavorful, smoked ribs (a bit dry but loaded with flavor) and breaded chicken breast halves (excellent with the special mustard sauce). Sides ordered, baked beans, chopped slaw and griddled polenta (with creamed corn and tasso ham). All three sides were fantastic! Between four of us, we a lot of it for dinner. Then the next morning, two of us started in on the remaining feast while airborne in the cockpit from west coast to east coast. But we still landed with BBQ remaining! I gave the leftovers to a bartender friend at the crew hotel on the east coast. The bartender really enjoyed it too! Now that I know about Reverend's, I will order from there on another flight to Portland. Especially the brisket!! Great job guys!

Excellent BBQ in Sellwood

By aflowing |

Went there recently, as it is brother's favorite BBQ place. It was excellent - huge, spicy BBQ St. Louis-style ribs - too much to finish in one meal. We had the deep-fried hush puppies as an appetizer which was good, & I also had the bbq beans & cole slaw - delicious! There are other types of food offered - chicken & various salads - I did not try those personally, but they looked good, & also are very large helpings. They serve good, local beers & also liquor, as well as sodas, tea & coffee. It's a family place, although at supper time it was very crowded with mostly adults. There were outdoor tables which looked quite pleasant. Our waiter was very helpful & friendly & had great wit. The food is quite authentic - so if BBQ is your thing - this place is highly recommended!

Just plain bad, all the way around.

By kaemicha |

I went there today with my niece. There were only 3 occupied tables-including my niece and I yet we had to wait - for everything. Waited to be seated. We sat ourselves. We got the menu and I ordered a beverage which was delivered about 15 minutes after I ordered it but no straw, so I asked for a straw. Nothing, so I got up and got a straw. Finally, our meal's arrive. Large portions of terrible food. Dry, dull tasting, flat and still no service. I had to ask our waitress for everything including the bill. My niece is a server and she said she's never experienced such terrible service in what seemed to be a great establishment. When I was there before, the food was good, but No more. I took it all home. Cats will thank me!

BBQ Heven

By Gary B |

I had my first dining experience at Reverends with some friends recently. Great onion rings and beef brisket! Others had and loved the pork ribs. Only downer was the gumbo type dish! I will go back!

Great food!

By RBro2014 |

We had the brisket, pork shoulder, and ribs with mac n’ cheese, potato salad and fries. Everything was great! We also got the deviled eggs and they were amazing!

Who knew a salad could be this good in a barbecue joint?

By Criftee |

I rarely default to eating greens in a BBQ restaurant, but recently went for lunch and found myself without much of an appetite. Or so I thought. Ordered a salad chock full of cheese, brisket and pickled egg. It was nothing like I expected. It was way better! We’ve been here a couple of times. My better half loves the ribs and pulled (chopped?) pork here, even though he usually gravitates towards brisket whenever barbecue is on offer. We also tried the deviled eggs and smoked chicken wings and enjoyed both. Server was funny and helpful. Love the feel of the place.

Before a show dinner

This is the third time I have eaten here and I still can't figure out what the spice is they use in the chicken coating that makes it so good and different than anywhere I have ever been. Great food once again! Moscow mules here we good too.

Best BBQ

By Oceantoes |

Wandered in one Saturday night after seeing people waiting outside Papa Haydn's, too impatient to wait. SO glad we did! After being immediately seated in a very long booth complete with at least five homemade sauces and a paper towel on a roller, we agreed on sharing a BBQ plate with pulled pork, fries and mac n cheese, add 1 pork rib and piece of fried chicken. It didn't take long and service was fantastic. The. Food. Was. Amazing. All of it, including the sauces, we liked every one of them. The fried chicken deserves special mention, the coating recipe is a secret. Do NOT fail to get an add on piece to any meal for an extra 3 bucks or you'll regret it. The BBQ pork came chopped and moist and flavorful, lightly seasoned, not swimming in sauce, you get to do that with your choice of sauces. Pork rib was a huge slab of solid meat without bone, dry seasoned on the outside, moist and juicy inside. The chicken was also boneless, even though we'd ordered a thigh, my favorite. We didn't even need the wet nap! Mac n cheese was rich, creamy and saucy with crumbled potato chips on top, so yummy. Fries are very crunchy, the kind with a little bit of coating on them, not my personal fave, but still good. We both enjoyed the Massh*le IPA, and hot brownie with ice cream and burnt caramel sauce for dessert. There was enough leftovers for a great lunch next day for one, the portions are hearty. Will definitely be back!

Delicious Fried Chicken!

By Linda Donewald |

Ordered the fried chicken thighs platter, selecting macaroni & cheese and cole slaw as sides. My meal was delivered piping hot and full of flavor! Reverend's BBQ has a great menu chock full of entree selections and sides. Don't forgot the dessert! Service is fast even during dinner service!

Good new restaurant

By Adam W |

I ate here the other day and enjoyed the food. I ordered the fried chicken, which had a well-seasoned batter and wasn't too greasy. I also tried the brisket and it was pretty good. Not the best I've ever had, but worth the price and the visit to the restaurant. The staff was friendly and I didn't have to wait for a table because we were willing to sit at the bar. Good place overall, and I will return. This place is very new and has a lot of potential.

Definitely worth a visit

By T3079KDstevenb |

I'm always predictable when it comes to Reverends and they never let me down. I always get the wedge salad and a rack of ribs with mac & cheese and beans on the side. The salad is great and it's really a meal all by itself. The ribs were meaty and lightly smoked. They were perfectly cooked and practically falling off th bone. And the sides are always good too. This is my go-to BBQ restaurant when I'm in Portland.

best fried chicken

By D L |

Moist, tender fried chicken with a crispy flavorful crust that isn't greasy!! Best fried chicken I have every had! The fried pickled zucchini is also good.

Fantastic BBQ place

By Barbara H |

I was not impressed with the atmosphere at first, because it looked more like a bar than a full service restaurant, but once I started sipping my drink and eating my meal, I didn't care about the decor anymore. This place was recommended to me and my party by a local, and it was well worth the drive from our hotel near the airport. The leanest, tastiest brisket I ever had (and I'm a brisket fanatic) along with delicious side dishes. Our party ordered a smoked chicken salad, toasted tempeh sandwich, and a brisket platter. All of us left satisfied.

Over priced and under delivered

By tireguyftc |

Was hoping for great BBQ 😐, but leaving sorely disappointed. Brisket tasted like lighter fluid, sausages were no different than I can buy at Costco. Sauces are super nasty. Kitchen service was slow. Service at table was good only reason I gave the place 2 stars. Wouldn’t recommend to anyone I know because it would be a huge letdown. Prices are not worthy based on food quality or quantity. Won’t be back!

He just wasn't that "into us"...

By Crae H |

Barbecue is a complicated thing to review. There's the matter of the meat, the rub, smoking time, and sauces to accompany. Everyone has an opinion about sides. Beans, greens, etc. We were a group of enthusiastic eaters. We showed up at 8 o'clock. And we were promptly seated. The restaurant closes at 10:00.. And it showed. The waiter had this "Jekyll and Hyde" routine. He would come to the table and act put upon by basic requests. Only to return minutes later with a chatty, strangely perky presentation. So we ping ponged back and forth between an almost eye rolling annoyance to repeated " can I get you anything elses"..all the way to "well I guess I can MAKE some coffee". So... The food? Great fried chicken and the polenta with creamed corn was amazing. Greens? A little sweet for my taste, but if you have someone who thinks they don't like collards, have them try these. They're really quite good. They're known for their brisket, but they were out the evening we were there. Would go back to try that, but probably around 6 o'clock in the evening. I wouldn't want to be a bother, by keeping anybody too late at work.

Good sauces

By kyman55k |

The food and service are really good. I really like the deviled eggs and the Carolina Ribs especially. The atmosphere is laid back but without being hipster pretentious. Good place to meet friends.

Wonderful waitstaff, disappointing meal

By shawnschey |

Enjoyed the deviled egg appetizer and the tempeh burger was delicious. However, the lemonade was watered down with ice cubes, the chicken "salad" was chicken chunks thrown amongst lettuce and the other items, not mixed together like a tuna salad (which was my expectation), and the brisket had to be sawed. It wasn't fall-apart tender. Went elsewhere for dessert - didn't want to chance it.

Straightforward, good BBQ

By scottdste |

Arrived for a midday lunch - first time for me. Got the special - sammich & sesh (brisket ends, onions, lettuce, pickles on a bun-a pint of Session beer) - $11. Normal price $12.95 + $5, so a nice savings. Table has spicy BBQ sauce (and sweet); very good, not too spicy, and complemented the meat. I plan to return to check out the other BBQ options.

Worth venturing to

By Mindy W |

I've never ordered a burger at a BBQ place, and I'm not even a burger person, but the stars aligned on this one. The Reverend Burger is what every other burger aspires to. Seriously. Without the toppings, it would rate excellent, with them, it's heavenly. As for the deviled eggs appetizer, just order them and thank me later. Get there early, a line develops around 6.

St. Louis style ribs are quite good.

By GoNepal |

I've previously sampled the St. Louis style ribs and will order them again. This time I had a hankering for fried chicken. Unfortunately I was disappointed. I ordered the thighs with two sides - seasoned fries and potato salad. The salad was good, and the fries crisp and tasty. I had been thinking of a very crispy piece of chicken but the batter was soft and not at all crunchy. It tasted a bit like south Asian style dishes, and I did take the ample amount that I could not eat at one sitting home - but I doubt I'll order the chicken again. Next time its the ribs for sure.

Skip the chicken but the sides are great

By Dave E |

We continue to seek out the best fried chicken in Portland and give this place a shot. This is more a sports bar and take note that the Happy Hour menu applies all night on those evenings when the Timbers match is on the TV. The menu offers "meals" where you can select your meat (we were after the Fried Chicken, but other BBQ is available) and then select two sides. Among us we picked the Mac&Cheese (excellent); the slaw (very good); the Polenta with corn (excellent); and the greens (under cooked). The service was good, although the person who seated us and took a drink order never reappeared and I never did get my beer (which I was not charged for). The chicken is good, but not outstanding. It came very quickly and was not overly hot, indicating it was not prepared to order. It was a bit dry and while boneless are easy to eat they lack some flavor. For an almost similar meal you can go to Bernies Southern Bistro in NE and have better chicken and a wider range of sides - just no TV.

Reverends BBQ Best Portland Restaurants Reviews

By Greg R |

I get the question all the time, Chef does Portland have a good Food Scene? Answer...YES and getting better every time I visit and here is proof! Reverends BBQ (located in Sellwood, but that is still Portland to me) not only has a great location in Portland. An Intimate setting for a night out, drinks and to have some of the BEST BBQ around. Fun old school pictures on the wall and of course big screen T.V.s when you belly up to the bar. Server: Fun and did he know the menu! That makes all the difference when you have a sense of humor and can out food talk a Chef! Reverend's BBQ has that traditional Smoked BBQ menu, with some sides and other options only a Portland Restaurant could pull off. St. Louis-Cut Pork Ribs rack with a side of homemade mac & cheese and you must try the FRIED CHICKEN...Thighs lightly battered and SUPER GOOD! Now we get the FOOD EXCITEMENT MEATER going off the charts! Sliced Beef Brisket with Griddled Polenta with Creamed Corn & Tasso Ham...This is exactly what I am talking about...Griddled Polenta with Creamed Corn & Tasso Ham is simply AMAZING. If you only go to Reverend's for this, it is worth the trip! Beans, did you say beans, again talking about beans? Yes, Yes I am...there are beans then there is Reverend's beans. Loaded with bbq goodness and almost chili like. Super good! You can even by the meat by the pound (not that we needed more) but what a great option. The Brisket is THAT GOOD, so I ordered more by the pound. Do me a favor try it WITHOUT the SAUCE, the flavor, bark and juiciness is all you need. Amazing Brisket. Your not a good BBQ Joint if you don't have the Sausage! The Smoked Sausage Plate with Louisiana Hot Link, Montbeliard & Cajun Andouille is as good as it gets! Oh and did I mention the BEANS! Chef Approved!

Love the Ribs

By M L |

Texas BBQ type of joint. Old wood, lots of tables, big bar seating area. The ribs were tender and moist. Good BBQ sauce.

Not going here again

By UKTurkeyTrotter |

This place is a typical chain. Staff are only interested in slapping food in front of you and getting you in and out of the place in record time. There is zero atmosphere and the food is indifferent. The Collard Greens were seemingly a week old and had been stewing in the pan for that whole period. The meat and the food generally was tasteless, although the brisket was admittedly very tender. The rest relied entirely on what sauce you put on it for flavour. The beer choice was limited with too many IPAs and overpriced when compared to beer prices in other restaurants in the area. The wasps were a pest and no attempt to control them was in evidence.

Great beans!!

By Anne S |

Our niece's family raved about this place so we went as a family with 2 seven year olds. The service is very good and it is kid friendly. Having said that, we have mixed reviews on the food. Best barbecue beans EVER. Very good banana pudding and strawberry shortcake. The rest of the dishes were so-so. Maybe we just weren't too hungry after having an amazing lunch at Jade !!!!!😍

Tasty

By BrncosFan |

Nice location in Sellwood with both indoor and outdoor seating, clean and well kept. I was very impressed on my first visit to Reverend's last month and looked forward to going again. This trip confirmed my first experience. The brisket, while served with a little more fat than I prefer, is to die for! Fork-tender and a flavor that BBQ sauce would just diminish!. I ordered a chicken thigh for an additional $3 to the combination plate, it was boneless with a medium-heavy breading which had a delightful, unique flavor and the chicken was moist and flavorful as well. If you're into fries...OMG, DON'T MISS THEM! The pork shoulder was a bit dry and definitely needed your choice of BBQ sauce, available on each table, to make it edible. The ribs were nicely seasoned with a BBQ sauce that didn't seem to taste like either of the sauces on the table, but luckily didn't need any additional. I highly recommend this place, but the pork is not the strength of Reverend's....get the brisket and chicken!

Amazing BBQ! 10/10

By Bryant S |

My fiancé and I both had the BBQ Brisket Sandwich with a side of their Mac n Cheese as well as their BBQ Baked Beans. I would definitely go back and recommend this restaurant to everyone!

Oregon BBQ?

By Tonypose |

Yes, BBQ in Portland and its pretty good too! I had a half plate of pork shoulder for lunch and a bulletproof coffee. A perfect KETO lunch. Casual atmosphere good service. Drink available from the bar.

Really wanted it to be good

By Rogue97202 |

I love BBQ and was really hopeful that Reverend's would add to my list of good joints in Portland. I am disappointed to report that it is not worth the time. There are several better places. My family have tried it several times as it's close to our house and we really wanted to make it work. The food is OK (chicken is actually pretty good) but they are often out of what we order (each time we've ordered they have limited the number of ribs we can have). The last time was the last straw.....we ordered brisket to carry out. I should mention here that Reverend's is not cheap so that order was $125+. As is said by many, brisket is the test of all good BBQ) to go. When we got home and opened the boxes we realized that what they gave us was almost 60% fat. Anyone that knows BBQ knows that the first step of brisket is to trim it. They clearly didn't do that. Unacceptable. Further, I tried calling them and was told I would get a call back. Never did. I sent them an email with a picture of all the fat placed on one dinner plate (which was piled so high it was falling over the edge). I never heard back. Wish it was better but it isn't.

Too much fat !

By Curiosity147865 |

Really cool place , but their brisket is way too fatty for me. At least one third of it was fat. And for just under $20 for lunch , that’s crazy ! The sides were good, though.

Quality has dropped.

By James W |

This place has really fallen off. The quality of the meats is so hit or miss these days. Brisket is often dry and badly trimmed, if trimmed at all. And their delivery game is very inconsistent. I’ve had something missing 3 of my last 6-7 orders. Bummer, because pre-pandemic this place was awesome. But I don’t think we’ll be back any time soon.

Happy happy

By DramaRatQueen |

I have only been here for happy hour but I would certainly come back for a full meal. I had the session & sammich for $11 and chose the Reverend's Burger. I've never had a "burger" made from burnt ends before but it was delicious. The bun was light but still held all the fillings in, which included thinly sliced sweet pickles, crispy fried onions, and pimiento cheese. I dipped part of my sandwich in each of the sauces and each was delightful, although the hot Ozark was my favorite because it was actually hot. Great service as well.

High Hopes, and NO Disappointments!

By Michael Mitchell |

Get there early, the tables fill fast. Hospitality and food cannot be beat. I'm already planning my next lunch! Brisket, moist, not dry. Perfect flavor, not overwhelmed.

Great BBQ that is a wonderful cure for depression!

By Milestogo007 |

I remember how depressed I was when I was kicked out my Church group that helped reconcile married couples by trying to use humor to decrease tensions in the class by saying "Men turn to necrophilia because they never have to worry about saying "Sorry".I don't think they got the joke and needless to say, I am no longer in that faith, but to cure my depression I went over to the Reverend's BBQ and enjoyed incredible beef brisket and sumptuous collard greens! In fact, their collard greens are some of the best in the Portland area. I am torn between the Reverend's and the Country Cat. The atmosphere is laid back and cheerful and the menu is diverse. I even had oyster shooters. Sellwood has lots of great restaurants and this is definitely one of them. I highly recommend it.

Great PNW BBQ

By 949randyt |

I've been to Reverend's twice. Once to scout it out and a second visit to take my monthly BBQ group. Seven of us gathered for dinner and seven of us left feeling like we really found a superior BBQ joint. We have visited almost all of the brick and mortar BBQ restaurants in town. There are some very good BBQ carts, but that is another review. BBQ can be difficult to review, so much depends on the day to day quality of the meat and how well the smoking went. Always ask for menu recommendations. The other key item to review is the quality and variety of the sides. Additionally, I look for a quality beer selection. They offer three different type of BBQ sauce. On the two days I visited I followed the staff's recommendation and the meat was superb. The smoking was done right, the meat very tender and full of flavor. You don't need a knife here. They offer a nice selection of sides. Between the seven of us we probably tried them all and everyone was very satisfied. They also have an excellent beer list from noteworthy local brewers including some rotating taps. The serving staff were fantastic. Often quality service can be a problem at BBQ restaurants, but not here. I called ahead to see if they could setup a table for eight and they had it already to go before we arrived. They did violate a tenant of great BBQ, which is to be hard to find, and the building has to be run down. This is a nice place in a nice nieghborhood that you can feel comfortable taking anyone to. The group agreed this is one of the top two or three best BBQ restaurants in Portland.

Everything we ordered was great

By Doug H |

Everything we ordered was great. Fried chicken was over the top. The eggs were a great touch. Nice selection of drinks

I’m done with their ribs!

By DonnieOshkosh |

Our adult son was visiting us from New York over the holidays & we took him to Reverend’s BBQ on Dec 23. The service seemed mixed- we were greeted & seated promptly & ordered drinks but it took a long time to get them. Also, I thought my Old Fashioned was rather weak! My wife ordered a Good Reverend Burger & my son had the pork shoulder plate. Both were good -with plenty in eat. I ordered the Pork Ribs plate & the ribs were lacking- primarily not much meat on the ribs. I had to cut tiny slices off the bone. I was reminded that I had ordered them once before with similar results so I’m done with them- I want ribs where the meat is falling off the bones! Most of the sides were pretty good- especially the BBQ beans but I’d avoid the collard greens. The price for our 3 drinks. 3 meals, & one dessert to go was $96 before tip. I won’t go here for ribs again!

Best Burger in Portland...No doubt!

By RkyMtnMark |

What do you get when you include 'burnt ends' of brisket into your burger? The best burger in PDX. It's simply packed with flavor! The special-ness of the Reverend's BBQ Good Reverend burger comes from the Brisket Burnt Ends, and includes Pimento Cheese, Pickles, Lettuce and Crispy Fried Onions. Overall: juicy, yummy, and packed with flavors. For sides, we tried the slaw (very nice, crispy, not too vinegary) the beans (salty/sweet BBQ sauce, with pieces of brisket in for texture boost and flavor bomb) and the seasoned fries (Not overly salty). What a fantastic lunch. Well worth the trip to the up and coming Sellwood neighborhood. The service was attentive, kept the drinks refilled. We weren't lacking for anything.

Happy Hour stop

By Azucena |

We stopped by for happy hour and will definitely be back for dinner sometime. The margaritas and hurricanes were perfect and even better at only 5 dollars during happy hour. Looking forward to coming back.

Wow. Just wow

By T3079KDstevenb |

Been here several times now. Each time the service is great and the food is fantastic. If you're into BBQ, it's damn near perfect.

Bad Food Extremely Expensive All Served with Lousy Attitude

By Kelly B |

Portland has a number of good barbeque places - this is NOT one of them. I made the mistake of reading the website prior to visiting the restaurant. I can only assume that the person who designed the web site has never actually been to this restaurant - they deserve a "Pants on Fire" award for their wildly inaccurate website. My actual dining experience was extremely different from the experience the website suggests. We had lunch on the friday after Christmas. Arriving shortly after the restaurant opened, there were few other customers in the place. There was one Greeter/ Food Server. She was Glum....very very Glum. She was clearly NOT having a good day and wanted everyone to notice it. Our service was slow....very very slow. And indifferent at best The food was bad, surprisingly bad. It is very hard to screw up macaroni and cheese, but these folks sure did. And FYI "Macaroni" is a tube shaped pasta which is slightly curved. These folks served a totally different shape of pasta in a cheese-ish sauce. The sauce had an odd slightly spoiled taste. It was topped with a generous pile of what appeared to be crushed sweetened corn chip crumbs Most unplesant.. Both of our lunches were very carefully "portion controlled". There use "cheats" to get the food to appear larger on the plate. The Fried Chicken was ONE smalli piece of breast meat cut into three pieces and fanned out across the platter. My sausage sampler was cut in half length wise. The portions are microscopically small. And, for the amount of food you are served extremely expensive. The restaurant also consistently failed to observe basic food safety. Our food did not appear to be newly prepared. It did not appear to be even recently prepared. AMD it was poorly stored . The fried chicken was lukewarm when it was served. Same thing with the sausage. Both items were well below the minimum temperature for stored foods of this type.

Best resto in Portland!

By Linda T |

We recently spent several days scouting out the Portland area for a possible move. We went to a series of really good restaurants, but this one was easily the best, because of the thought and care put into the dishes. Best pork sandwich I've ever had, best BBQ beans, best banana pudding dessert. Great smoked Tempeh for the vegetarian, good drinks, just all around primo. Neighborhood location, not crowded for lunch. Next time we're in Portland, we'll make a bee line for this place! California Foodies Jon & Linda

Did NOT take me to church!!!

By robamym |

We visited today because we read great reviews. After eating at Bobby Qs in phoenix last week we were craving great BBque. This place the inside and outside seating nice. My water cup was dirty. They needed more help for tables. My husband said rack of ribs were decent but not even close to how great Bobby Qs is. The fried chicken was a HUGE LET DOWN! We did not even finish it. I had 2 bites and should have trusted the dislike of the first bite. Actually felt bad feeding it to my dogs. Fries were great! Lettuce fresh on salad. Bacon could have been great it was nice and thick but it was flavorless! I love bacon and brought it all home for my dogs! I always eat the bacon! We will not be returning. Continuing the search for a Portland restaurant the is as good as Bobby Qs!!!

Awesome BBQ in Portland

By Mr. H. |

Wanted some BBQ and found this place and it was totally awesome. We got different sandwiches and switched halves so it was like having our own sampler platter. The food is amazing and we would highly recommend this BBQ

Nice Dinner

By Pat0110 |

Ate here this evening. Partner had chicken plate and I had ribs. Her chicken was medium, but my ribs were the best I have had in a while. The sides were large portions and the Bbq beans were better than any I have ever had. Seriously! Service was very good and well. If in the neighborhood, I'll likely eat here again.

BBQ Research

By Beach and mountain fun |

My husband and I were out and about. Saw Reverends and chose to eat there. We ordered the deviled eggs with brisket and the chicken wings for our appetizer. The flavor was spot on but the price point was a little high. The eggs were $3.95 for 4 halves and the wings were $6.95 for 3 wings. For dinner my husband chose the sausage plate which had 3 different kinds of sausage and he got 3 halves for $11.95 with the collards and I had the brisket plate which looked to me at least a half pound with the mac and cheese which was $15.95. The flavor was very good. We shared and the sausage and the brisket were full of the smoky flavor that you would expect to get from bbq. the price point on the dinner was within normal parameters. I would recommend going there for the dinner but not the appetizers because of the price point.

They really care about their BBQ

By Sunset151 |

Good BBQ, pork or chicken, can't go wrong here. The decor is basic, good choices for side dishes, the focus is all on food. I had pork one night, chicken two days later.

Wow what an awesome late lunch

By IndyOmahaCincyKid |

Stopped in for a late lunch to check the place out. It did not disappoint! The brisket slices were thick, juicy and had a good snap to it. It was very flavorful. I inquired as to the available of burnt ends as a side or sampler. I guess they only serve them as a sandwich. The server went and checked. Low and behold a beautiful pile of burnt ends appeared on my plate. They were fantastic. Super concentrated flavor with just enough sauce. I've had a lot of burnt ends, these were some of the best that I ever had. My side was polenta with creamed corn and Tasso bacon. Very creative and very tasty. I'm not from Portland or the NW for that matter but next time that I'm in town I will be back. I guess their fried chicken is even better than the burnt ends...WOW.

Better Than Podnah's

By Courtney M |

The state of BBQ in Portland is sad, as evidenced by the fact that this "BBQ" joint's best dish is it's fried chicken and this place offered the best BBQ pork ribs we have sampled, as well as a decent brisket and pulled pork shoulder. The ribs are not worth ordering. The meat is not tender, which violates the first rule of good ribs. They must be fall-off-the-bone tender. The ribs also did not have the characteristic smoked ring. The flavor was decent; however, the toughness of the meat made these ribs undesirable. The pulled pork shoulder was tender and the brisket was decent. The sauces left on the table were just okay. The "Carolina" style sauce was a mustard base, making it not your typical Carolina sauce, which is generally more vinegar-based. The spicy sauce and the sweet sauce were acceptable, but did not add significantly to the taste of the meat. If you have ever eaten at any decent barbecue place, you will be disappointed. For example, Brothers barbecue in Denver is better. Also, pretty much any road side joint anywhere in the Carolinas, Maryland, Georgia, Florida or any southern state would be better. A chain like Famous Dave's offers a much better experience, especially for the meat and sides. (I recommend Thig's near the airport close to Camp Lejeune in NC for pulled pork and hush puppies.) Back to Reverend's: The fried chicken was the best thing that we tasted here. It was succulent, juicy and perfectly fried. The flavor was good though not exceptional. I recommend the fried chicken if you're visiting this place. The sides were also not worth the trip. The beans simply were not good. The macaroni and cheese was cheesy, but without the full flavor you would expect. The five of us agreed that we would not go out of our way to eat here. This place is better than Podnah's though and Reverend's is also in a wonderful neighborhood with easy access to different surrounding areas. Don't try to eat BBQ in Portland, or any type of southern food. They just don't have it here yet. However there are many other great cuisines, so try brunch at Mother's or Tasty N Sons or dinner at Andina. Or grab a neat flavor at Salt & Straw. Those are just a few of the wonderful eateries in this foodie town. Just avoid any type of southern/creole/Cajun restaurant.

Super good bbq

By Charles G |

These folks do it right, season then smoke the meats overnight or longer. The hamburgers are made from the beef brisket tips. Excellent selection of beers and great service. Very casual and open environment

Rave about Reverend's

By reagangirl70 |

I took a few friends over for a late lunch - and it ended up being a very late lunch - as in Happy Hour just started at 3:00. All 3 of us ordered the Good Reverend Burger and a side of hush puppies. I should have guessed it was all going to be good once we tried the hush puppies. And being a southern girl - I know my hush puppies! These were the best I've had in Portland. And still to come... this exceptional burger that was truly a melt-in-your-mouth experience! Can't wait to come back to try the chicken! Really a great place , not to be missed.

Great BBQ menu

By Diane P |

Enjoyed our meal here. We had the burger (v good), brisket (excellent) and chopped pork shoulder (a little fatty for my taste but my nephew loved it). The porkwas almost room temp but the sides were all good. It was crowded so we found some spots at the bar to avoid the 30 min wait. There are some tables outside too. Great service.

Good BBQ

By PDXTraveler110 |

I have eaten at Reverend's BBQ several times. I've always found the service to be good. The BBQ is also good, particularly the ribs and the pulled pork. The brisket is a little fattier than I would like.

Now the best BBQ in Portland

By GeorgesHenri |

I've been to Rev's many, many times since they opened two years back and they just keep tweaking the menu and getting better. It's now the best BBQ in PDX (better on numerous items than Podnah's) with a menu that's consistently good across the spectrum. The staff is great, friendly and it's a fun place to watch a Ducks or Timbers game. My favorites -- the brisket, fried chicken (the batter has just a touch of curry in it), smoked oyster shooters, their unique gumbo, a damn great burger with fried onions and pimento cheese, the burnt ends sandwich, the St Louis ribs, hushpuppies. BTW, they also have a dynamite smoked tempeh sandwich and the 'small' salad feeds 3. The drinks are strong and imaginatively done and very reasonably priced. Their Pimm's Cup and Moscow Mule rock, their Vesper (from Casino Royale) is oh so refreshing, and the Sazerac is deliciously potent. It's often crowded for dinner but lunchtime is strangely quiet and a slam dunk with no line.

Great rib lunch

By Seth G |

My wife and I each had the St Louis rib plate lunch. Ribs are delicious, as were the side dishes of collard greens and the fried polenta with corn kernels. That side dish was especially good with a nice smoky flavor. Side dishes are a bit small, however. A local IPA was also good and reasonable at $5. We did not eat again for another 9 hours.

Evening Out with Family

By Charles G |

We have visited here a few times. A favorite place of my son especially on pay day. Quite busy tonight. Had to wait for a table for a short time. My wife and I both got their special hamburgers. Really great. My son got the ribs and chicken. Service was okay. They were busy.

Fun and tasty experience!

By Dan556 |

When we travel, my wife and I usually check out local BBQ joints. This one is a top-rated spot on TripAdvisor, and we decided to check it out. It's in one of those urban neighborhood settings, and was easy to locate with GPS. We found free on-street parking a couple of blocks away. Our arrival coincided with happy hour, and we ordered from that menu. We each ordered a Carolina Clamshell, which was white bread spread with mustard BBQ sauce and topped with pulled pork and slaw. We also shared an order of onion rings. The clamshell idea was a great one (and inexpensive at $3 each), and was just the right size to prevent leftovers while traveling. The pork was very good and the mustard BBQ sauce was not too spicy. The onion rings were enormous, batter dipped and passed our bite test: the onions were well-cooked and did not pull out of the crispy batter on the first bite. Service was quick and friendly, the restrooms clean, and we were in and out fairly quickly. It was great to see a mix of customers here: young families with kids, old geezers and everything in between, a true neighborhood hangout. Just the kind of place we like to patronize. Don't hesitate to give them a try!

Nice little BBQ joint

By wildatheart84 |

I finally tried Reverend's after driving by a handful of times saying "we really need to go there sometime". We had a really good experience. My husband ordered the fried chicken plate and I got the sausage plate. Both very good. The fried chicken gad a very interesting spice which I couldn't pin point but it complemented the dish well. We sat at the bar and had excellent service. I got a few of the happy hour margaritas which were also delicious. Outdoor seating in the front as well as an outdoor patio on the side (which had a bit more shade). I thought the quantity was sufficient for the price, we left satisfied but not stuffed and finished our meals.

Great Chopped Pork Sandwich

By Daniel D |

We went here for my sisters birthday recently and it was hit and miss for my taste, but mostly good and now I just know what to order. I went here and tried the following: the chopped pork sandwich, ribs, mac n cheese, potato salad, and baked beans. I’ll start off with the things I enjoyed. The chopped pork sandwich was delicious, especially when you add some of the housemade sauces they have. I highly recommend this sandwich. The ribs were also pretty good and the potato salad as well. The items I didn’t care for were the mac n cheese and the baked. They were just too spicy for my taste, especially the baked beans. Next time I will happily be ordering the chopped pork sandwich with the potato salad. I recommend this place.

BBQ that is so fresh and tasty!

By 4snickers |

Reverend's is run by the same folks that own Laurelhurst Market and Simpatica Dining, so they know good food! Reverends is BBQ, with Great fried chicken. They offer meat by the pound, happy hours, and have at least 3 TV screens for sports watching. This spot is already very popular! so arrive early! Usually plenty of seating at the bar in front of the kitchen where you can watch the staff make drinks as well. Love the bbq sauce, love the gumbo, love the fried chicken, love the brisket..well you get the idea! They have sweet tea, and a local drink from N Carolina! Serve Moscow mules on tap in a copper cup! Only challenge is parking in this southeast Portland neighborhood of Sellwood. Lots of other shops and the coffee is so good. Change their dessert selections seasonally as well.

Sellwood ain't the same

By Mrmattd2000 |

I eat bbq as much as I can. This place feels like a well lit tavern. Sports bar'ish. I had brisket with Mac & cheese and greens. And smoked chicken wing appetizers. I'll forego the wings next time. The sides were great. The brisket is ok. Nothing to brag about. And it is expensive. Another model based on beer, wine liquor sales joint. Not the pit.

Best Burger Ever

By Daryl H |

Best Burger that I've had. The Reverend burger with brisket burnt ends ground in was moist and flavorful. Greeted promptly and sat outside. plenty of sides. good beer selection. Marble chocolate stout excellent. Fun neighbor.

Best burger EVER!

By austinana |

Folks, we are visiting from Texas. At 58, I have had plenty of great bbq and burgers, but to put the two together in one burger was genius. Really, the best burger I have ever had. The potato salad was delish, a bit of kick at the end of each bite. Husband thought his brisket sandwich was amazing as well!

Must try the brisket!

By Gail O |

I have been to Reverand's BBQ only once, but I would go way out of my way to have the brisket sandwich again--it was, no kidding, the best I've ever had. I would plan my trip to that side of town just to go there again!

You have got to try the burger!

By Season P |

I ordered the burger with fries and it was excellent. The flavor of it and the smoked cheese. No words! My husband had the fries chicken, sliced brisket, Mac, and baked beans and loved it as well. The brisket was so tender and sides paired and tasted well. A must try in Portland!

Tender and Tasty

By OishiMizu |

Yummy southern BBQ. So I made sure to go with a southern friend. He approved, though of course, southern BBQ is always better. But the meats were tender and the sauces tasty. We gobbled up our food. Good, friendly service, too.

Best BBQ I’ve had in Portland

By Benny C |

In all fairness I have to say I ordered this on Grubhub. If it’s better in the store it doesn’t need to be. Finally good hush puppies in PDX following the close of O’Conners. Greens, Mac and cheese, and polenta were all top shelf. The ribs didn’t quite fall off the bone but they were quite good. The highlight was the brisket. It is truly melt in your mouth. Don’t bother with a fork. A reviewer below complains about the fat. Hahaha. I suppose if you like dry brisket low fat works. For me that fat makes the meat. I’ll be “returning” soon.

Not for the Gluten-Free Crowd

By SAS5751 |

I recently attended a group dinner at Reverend's. I knew ahead of time that there would be little for me to eat, but that's what happens when a GF person is part of a larger crowd. Reverend's is a casual restaurant with a nice vibe, although a bit loud for conversation when it's busy. The staff were pleasant and attentive throughout our meal. Unfortunately, there were only three items on their menu that were gluten-free - the chopped pork, collard greens, and potato salad. At least I like pork and collard greens. The pork was tender and tasty, and they gave me a generous serving. The (vegan) collard greens were pretty flavorful, even without any bacon or hamhocks, but they were fairly spicy, so a little went a long way. The potato salad was just potato salad. I did have a nice dry cider that was on tap that evening. My colleagues all enjoyed their meals, which included pork ribs, beef brisket, deviled eggs (topped with cubes of the brisket), fried chicken, onion rings, sliders, and banana pudding, so if you have no food limitations, this would probably be a nice place for a relaxed BBQ meal. I find it hard to understand why so many BBQ places DON'T have gluten-free BBQ sauce - there are plenty of excellent BBQ sauces available that are naturally GF, so it can't be THAT hard to do. In the meantime, if you have to eat gluten-free, you can cross Reverend's off your list.

Cool BBQ in Selwood Portland Oregon

By Marc L |

Went here and ordered the works. The hush puppies were very good. The sausage appetizer was ok. The chicken wings were OK bit not great. Hood selection of local beers. The brisket 2as excellent and the St. Louis ribs were very good. Slaw was fine and beans were very good. Polenta was interesting. Service was good. Nice BBQ experience.

Pricey but good bbq

By JooleySchmooze |

Cool place to check out the Portland vibe and eat good bbq. The bbq salad was excellent and the strawberry shortcake was delicious. Brisket was yummy. Wings had a superb dry rub.

Very Popular Neighborhood BBQ

By DewPortland |

I visited for the first time after hearing about the restaurant last year on the radio. I was impressed by the number of GrubHub drivers coming in to pick up food. The features are smoked brisket, BBQ ribs, fried chicken and sausages. I ordered the brisket with Cole slaw and potato salad. I added a chicken thigh and a rib so as to try a little of everything. The creamy slaw was delicious. So was the potato salad, but the giant chunks of potato put me off a bit. Then the meat dishes. All appeared to have the same spice package. The rib, the brisket, and the chicken all had the same flavor. Optional sauces on the table could have offset the common flavor had I chosen to use them, but I didn’t.

Great BBQ and atmosphere in Sellwood

By Chris92SE |

My family (wife, son and I) have been to Reverend's three times now in the last 6 months and we start craving a return trip quickly. We usually go for lunch when my son has trips to the Shriner's Hospital or Doernbecher. He is in a wheelchair and the restaurant has been very polite and accommodating. The brisket is excellent, one of the best I've had in Portland. They have nice portions, thick cuts and just enough fat and not too much gristle. I also like the chopped pork shoulder and their gumbo tastes very good. I have never been to Louisiana, so I have no "amazing" reference point, but I find this one very tasty. My son usually gets a chopped pork sandwich and he says it is his favorite sandwich, along with the Don Johnson at Lardo. Something I find amazing are the deviled eggs. It's an item I never thought of at a restaurant, but they nailed it with these. If you like these, they are a nice appetizer. The sides are all well done. I really like the mac and cheese, but collard greens are good, as is the slaw. Reverend's has a pretty substantial menu and there are several things I can't wait to try on my upcoming trips. The bar is nice, has a TV and a good beer selection. I recommend Reverend's as a nice lunch or dinner spot. The prices are in line with similar BBQ places and we have had zero issues in our visits there.

Great food and service

By April |

They accommodated our large group of 13 for their Saturday night happy hour at 9:00 pm. The appetizers menu is delicious. Great margaritas too. Nice selection of drinks. Big place for lots of people. Service was outstanding and we even got separate tickets! Looking forward to returning to try more of the menu items. Hush puppies are the best.

Best Burger Period!

By Ding77 |

Burnt ends burger is the best thing you will ever eat. I have intense cravings for it and have one about once a month. It is one of a kind. Very unique and brilliant. The rest of the menu is very solid and the staff is there to work and know how to. I would give it a perfect rating if there was a barbecue pit somewhere. This a good restaurant.

Great barbecue in Sellwood

By Nancy S |

This place has really good barbecue, and sides, and good drinks. It is reasonably priced, gives you good portions and is a pleasant place. It is in Sellwood, so if you are in that area, this is a good place to go. I bring my family here a few times a year. I also drop by for take out.

decent bbq place

By madcitypaul |

This restaurant has good, not great, food. The brisket was clearly home made and slow smoked. The burgers were cooked well and juicy, and the fried chicken was crispy and juicy. The ambiance was open and energetic. Most cities have a good bbq restaurant or two. This was on par with nicer bbq restaurants, but not the best ive ever had. But the prices cant be beat! And the service could not have been better.

A place run by idiots

By dan7360 |

Web site says they don't take reservations. Our group of 7 needed a reservation but not exactly. Show up at your reserved and hang around till maybe they can seat you in a couple of hours. Idiots is all I can come up with

BBQ is quite good

By Scott M |

Enjoyed an outside table on an early sunny eve. Monday is Happy Hour all day! Had a great beer while enjoying meaty pork ribs ($2.50 per piece) with tangy sauce. Family enjoyed the smoked chicken wings and the smoked tempeh sandwich. Friendly service, a la Portland.

Flavor Bomb in My Mouth

By prostotthehost |

Being vegetarian, I get urges to eat BBQ (and bacon). It must be the years of attending the Best in the West Rib Cook-off in Reno, NV as a child when I was not a veg head. While I don't care if it is AUTHENTIC bbq, I want amazing. I want quality and I want to know my food wasn't pumped with hormones. So this place meets my high standards. The sauces are different, but they are delicious. The smoked tempeh sandwich will change your mind about non-meat sandwiches. The fried onions will make you wish you could save some in your pocket and snack on them throughout the day and the slaw will change your outlook on life. In response to the racist comment below...get over yourself.

Nice BBQ!

By Ron P |

All the food was well prepared. BBQ items quite tasty, Still a little confused on "Servings" by the pound and family style. Wait staff very friendly and quick. Selections of beer met our needs. Not too much of a variety of wine selections. We and had a little extra to take home. With 2 drinks each (7 people) and food we hit $220 before tip. We were there during happy hour and had several appetizers. So gauge your own budget. I would definitely return, however, it would be during happy hour!

Every time we come here we leave happy. The service was great and these guys make the best ribs and wedge salad you will ever eat. Period.

Very disappointed

We went there for the first time the end of September. The beef brisket was almost inedible. It had more fat than meat. Won't go back,.

Excellent Q - with vegetarian options

By BlueHenFlyer |

Ever had Smoked Tempeh? Try it at Reverend's. The only thing keeping this place from getting an excellent is the quality and inconsistency of the sides. Dined here several times with various folks - me always having the tempeh - but raves all around on the meat. Unfortunately, all come the the same conclusion - nasty food service fries (even if they are "seasoned"), weak-will collards, and no stout bean choices. Hope the Rev gets religion and re-thinks his array of sides. Even if he doesn't, I'll be back .

YUM!

By Forresterpdx |

There might be a better barbecue restaurant in NE Portland, but nothing in the SE sector of Portland comes even close to the BBQ etc. at Reverends. This is a lively place - lots of sports playing on TV screens, plenty of beers on tap, good happy hour deals, and just a fun place to meet with a group of friends. My favorite hush puppies ever. Very good ribs. Very good salads. Very good cocktails. Very friendly servers. Go, eat, and be merry.

One of the better BBQ’s in Portland.

By R W |

We tried the happy hour on Sunday afternoon and it was terrific. Couple of ribs, a few chicken wings, smoked tempeh sandwich, HUGH salad, and a cold Kolsch, all for around $2 to $5.00 each. Doesn’t get better than this in Portland. Waiter was great too! This will be our destination for BBQ in the Portland metro area.

Great BBQ experience in Sellwood

By TravelingDad_PTFC |

Got there about 6:30 on a Friday night & it was packed. We had read mixed reviews so took that as a good sign. We only waited about 10 minutes before a table opened up & we were seated & had our drinks in no time. Only 2 IPA's to choose from, but both local & delicious. Gf opted for the Sellwood Collins & said it was delicious. She ordered the beef brisket sandwich with potato salad side & loved them both. I got the rib platter with an extra fried chicken thigh & thought both were fantastic! The ribs were well done, but still moist & great with or without the added BBQ sauce available at the table. The chicken was so good! Done to perfection, not dried out at all & a seasoning in the breading reminiscent of a light curry taste. For my sides I opted for the griddled polenta with ham & creamed corn and mac & cheese. Polenta was great & mac & cheese was OK. Will definitely go again & next time may get an entire half pound of the chicken thighs!

Really great BBQ

By Orygun_Fox |

Excellent service. Quality BBQ. Even have Collard Greens. The only hesitation we have is that the ribs served to us had a lot of excess fat especially when compared to the meat content. The other BBQ was top quality.

Not worth it.

By Jelofi |

The food was reasonably good (fried chicken excellent, polenta - meh), but the real problem is the service. Surly, arrogant, unhelpful. Needs an employee reset. And if the middle-aged man who 'served' us is the owner, well ... Not going back!

Small burger and sandwich for the price, but tasty sides

By kickingaround |

The $14 burger and $13 pork sandwiches were pretty good, but small . I would have expected them for $6-$7 at lunch. Not satisfying for dinner, especially at that price. I won't be back. Sides of collards and polenta were excellent, however.

Comfy and Darn Good BBQ

Hung out with a couple of friends and we were loud and laughing and had a great time. There were two TVs one with basketball playing. Shared a long table with two other people and it was comfortable. Great baby back ribs and Moscow Mules!

Newer Sellwood BBQ Good But Needs Work

By Gcnarc |

Three of us stopped here for Sunday dinner. Onion rings, chicken sandwich and burger very good; chopped pork shoulder plate OK but only warm when served. We were told 45 minute wait at 6:30PM but were able to order at the bar with no wait. Our onion ring appetizer got lost and was reordered delaying our main meal; but they appropriately did not charge us for it. Total meal with three beers came to $48 + tip which we felt was reasonable. I would have tried their ribs, but felt $30 for a full rack was a bit pricey. Waiter was friendly. This was our second visit and we all felt we had a better experience at our first visit.

Local Knowledge

By Vince M |

Admittedly, my visit to Reverend Barbecue was a happy accident. I had set out to visit the well reviewed Trinity Barbecue - only to find it was closed down. Fortunately, my Uber driver Eric was well versed in the local Barbecue scene, and recommended Reverend. I was pleasantly surprised by this cool spot with a large open bar, great old school music (50's & 60's), a nice selection of local craft beers and - most importantly - great Barbecue. I sampled the Deviled Eggs, Smoked Wings, Fried Chicken, St. Louis Cut Pork Ribs and the Creamy Potato Salad. All were flavorful and delicious. On top of all the above, service was excellent. Not sure what happened to Trinity and I wish them all the best, but I am glad Reverand Barbecue was there to scratch my itch 🙂

Best burger around

By tam162 |

One of the best burgers ever is The Reverends Burger. Not cheap at $14.95 but in this case you get the quality and taste you pay for. Other menu items I have tasted are equally tasty. A variety of good local beer, pleasant staff and atmosphere make this place a winner.

nothing special , but not bad

Supper in Sellwood

By Sherah53 |

Celebrated an early dinner family birthday at Reverend's. Our group, four adults and a baby, were made welcome and seated with a very short wait. We shared a hushpuppy appetizer. The hushpuppies were tender on the inside and crunchy on the outside. The dipping sauces complemented them nicely. Our table ordered two beef briskets, one pork shoulder plate and a "Good Reverend Burger." All the meats were juicy and flavorful. The portion on the brisket was enough to take home a little for the next day's lunch. For me, the outstanding part of the meal was the side of Griddled Polenta with Creamed Corn & Tasso Ham. By the time we left there was a significant line of guest waiting to be seated, and another line of patrons picking up take-out. This is clearly a popular restaurant, for good reason. We'll be back!!

A pure American eatery

By Younes J |

I live in this neighborhood, and visit this place once in a while. This is a restaurant that I can call it "pure American". They earn this title with their iconic beef brisket stake, deviled eggs and collard green. I almost repeat the same menu every time I go there. Also, you will enjoy its Western environment with lots of noise and eating going on around you. This restaurant is one of the must-go places in my view.

Can't wIt to return

By Dane A |

This is certainly one of the Best BBQ restaurants I've had the pleasure to dine in for quite some time. The brisket, fried chicken, cole slaw and BBQ beans are Outstanding. The BBQ sauce is in a class of it's own. The meat is so tender it delights the mind to think of how it must be prepared. The fried chicken is unbelievably delicious and perfectly prepared. We are returning as soon as possible. This restaurant is a meat lover's delight!

Great chopped pork

By emmalea3 |

The pork plate was the best bbq pork that I have had since leaving the South. The hush puppies were also good. The collard greens were not quite done enough for me but tasted fine. The service was great on a busy Fathers' Day

Brisket is Their Thing

By Jeremy S |

Welcoming room, spacious booths, friendly and helpful staff, good selection of rotating taps, and brisket worth a special trip to Sellwood. Between the three of us, we pretty much covered the menu aside from the chicken. Everything was good, but the standout was the brisket. Given their meat pedigree (they also own, among others, Laurelhurst Market), this shouldn't be surprising; luscious fine-grained beef with just the right hint of smoke served unsauced. There's a selection of sauces at the table, but this brisket was delicious naked. The ribs had been left in the heat a bit too long with the thinner end becoming almost candied, but the thick end was rich and fall-off-the-bone tender. Among the many sides, the winner was their polenta topped with creamed corn and a hint of tasso ham. The corn topping seemed more porridge than creamed and was incredibly good. Do not miss this side dish if you are a fan of corn. Some have mentioned the price might seem a tad steep, but the quality was excellent, the portion sizes ample, and we all agreed it was a good value.

Disappointing food, great service

We had high hopes for this restaurant, as we love barbeque. The service was great -- friendly, attentive without being intrusive. However, the food was disappointing -- mediocre at best! (I gave the food a "poor" rating, because Portland is a "food town," so I would expect a bit higher standard here. I think I might have given it an "average" rating were it located elsewhere.) The brisket was very fatty. Neither the brisket nor the pork ribs had very much "smoky" flavor. The pork ribs were tender and tasty, even though they lacked the barbeque flavor, but the brisket did not have much to recommend it. The sides we had -- cole slaw, BBQ beans, and collard greens -- were entirely forgettable, unfortunately. Bland, not seasoned well. We also had gumbo and onion rings for starters. The onion rings were the best part of the meal, as they were light and crispy. The gumbo was not made with gumbo filé (we had the waiter ask the kitchen), and we could definitely taste that it was missing. Filé is much of what makes gumbo gumbo. Having said that, the okra was done nicely, and it was a good (not great) stew -- just not really gumbo. We had a brownie sundae for dessert, which was good, but nothing special. The beer and drink list is nice, by the way -- not very long, but very well-chosen, we felt.

A tasty stop for lunch

We went here based on a recommendation from a Portland native. We weren't disappointed. The BBQ food was delicious. They have a large smoker on the street outside the restaurant which cooks and flavors the food. The service was good and the beverage selection was adequate. We'll go back the next time we are hungry for BBQ in Portland.

Tasty sauce, terrible meat, unfriendly waiter

By MCinPDX |

I'm a BBQ lover from way back (used to live in Texas, and got used to the real deal down there). Heard many ads for Rev's BBQ on the radio, and finally decided to give it a shot with a friend. The GOOD news: their sauce was really good (I had a beef brisket salad), and the portion size was fine. The BAD: the meat on the salad was about 35% meat, and about 65% gristle... I mean, really gristly and difficult to chew/swallow. One always expects a little gristle with brisket, but this was unlike anything I've had at a BBQ restaurant before... So, I ate lots of lettuce, but not much else. And the waiter was really odd, aloof, would barely respond to our questions... Didn't do the restaurant any favors. :-(

A Top BBQ place in Portland

By Frequent D |

Went with family for lunch to see how it measured up to other BBQ restaurants in the area and I would say it's up in the top area of my list. We started with the Deviled Eggs that are topped with burnt ends. They were excellent with just a little kick of spice. We had the BBQ chopped salad, Smoked sausage plate with collard greens, and the Good reverend Burger with mac & cheese. Everything was very good especially the salad & burger. The service was good also although was a little slow. We would definitely go back and try other offerings on the menu in the future.

Barbeque

Ate there with my wife just a few days ago, I had the full rack of ribs and my wife had the brisket. Both were outstanding and delicious. Our food was a little slow coming out and even though we didn’t mind or complain about it they removed our second round of beer from the tab.

Good food, but not cheap

The food was very good, the service was great, it is a little on expensive side I thought. Will probably go back again in the future.

Fantastic

We were looking for a restaurant that serves fried chicken. We did a search and decided to take a change on Reverend's BBQ. We were not disappointed! The fried chicken was perfect. We had deviled eggs for an app. Delicious also, even had a piece of brisket on top of each egg. The cole slaw was the perfect blend of slaw to dressing. The fries were crispy and homemade. We ate outside on a beautiful night in Portland. Can't wait to go back.

Good food, great server

Every couple of weeks I take one of our church pastors to lunch...where else I could I take them but Reverend's? The barbecue is good, particularly the brisket sandwich. Our favorite server is Erin, she does an amazing job of anticipating our needs and always has a smile on her face!

Awesome burger!!

I’m not a meat- loving girl, so when I eat a burger it really has to be amazing. This place delivers. Get a margarita from the the slushee machine and sit at the bar! It’s always loud and festive here.

Good find of 2018!

BBQ isn't a 5 star thing out in the Northwest, but this is a close as i've found... Deviled eggs with brisket atop- excellent starter. Chopped slaw- almost perfect... BBQ Chicken Salad good cheese and apples and greens. BBQ Chicken was good, but shredded would have been better. BBQ Brisket sandwich was perfect. i'd have another right now. went for lunch so didn't try the full bar. parking on the street is easy. football on the TV's but not annoyingly so.

Great Portland BBQ restaurant

By wirenut1462 |

We went here on a Saturday evening expecting a wait but we were seated almost immediately. I ordered the The Good Reverend' Burger which was perfectly cooked and in a great bun along with their creamy potato salad. She ordered the BBQ Chop Salad Brisket with Aged White Cheddar Cheese, Chow Chow, Pickled Egg, Romaine, Cabbage and House Ranch Dressing. We have been here several years ago but will return sooner this next time. Great meal and service.

Southern Cooking-finger lick-in' good!

I recommend you order the brisket or rib plate and add a fried chicken thigh or order the chicken plate and add a beef side. Plates include 2 sides: slaw, Mac n cheese, collard green, polenta or baked beans. The fried chicken has an interesting favor twist....what? Cinnamon perhaps? Yum! Beautiful, juicy BBQ ( check out the perfect smoke ring) with a variety of sauces. Save room for the banana pudding with nilla wafers! A Sellwood gem not to be missed

Divinely Delicious deviled eggs and best bbq on West Coast

By CAtourist |

This is the best bbq I have found on the West Coast. Absolutely delicious. The brisket and the pulled pork were perfectly cooked and came with a small sample of tasty pickled veggies (celery, onion, etc) and a variety of bbq sauces. The deviled eggs alone would make me go back for more. I have to warn you that the mac and cheese is more like a fondue it's so decadently loaded with cheese.

Brisket

By MAUIOREGONBEACH |

Brisket sandwich a few chunks of meat some fatty not much flavor. It appears many restaurants are struggling and quality has really decreased. Also service has gone downhill. Makes you want to stay home and not waste your time or money.
