tourist trap

By Footprints284548 |

Worst attitude from servers we have ever experienced! Very rude! Food was just OK nothing to write home about. Drinks appeared to be watered down. No lemons or olives for the drinks! Very odd! Would not recommend!!!!!!!!!

So good

By Amy B |

Loved the spicy the salsa. Margaritas were good. Service was excellent. Loved it! We got the Alamo. Cheese enchilada with beef taco. Delish

Upon being seated we were told to finish our frozen drink off the premises. The nachos were soggy and very little chicke

By Bmccormick65 |

Nachos had little chicken that was rubbery. Soggy chips due to refueled beans and melted cheese everywhere . Margaritas good but not cheap .

When in San Antonio you gotta go to Rio Rio

By Ruslman |

Rio Rio Cantina has my new favorite drink ... the Sangarita. It is the love child of a red wine sangria and margarita pairing and it is delicious. I have been to Rio Rio before and it is a good place to sit outside near the San Antonia River Walk and sup and drink with friends.

Tourist Trap. Keep walking....

By PhotoMama |

Tourist Trap. Food was pretty awful. Rice tasted like it was rinsed in water. Lots of upsell- from trying to sell us $15 pictures of our kids at the table to “happy hour” where half price drinks were also half the size. Expensive for a less than mediocre experience. I will say the staff was nice but they knew it wasn’t a great product too.

Great Outdoor Seating and Food!

By Tonya H |

I enjoyed this restaurant one evening after being at a convention all day. I loved the atmosphere as folks walked by and made for great people watching! The staff was knowledgeable and accomodating as I was specific on how I wanted my order prepared. They were aware of upcharges and showed me a way to save on what I wanted which is always appreciated. The water view and Mariachi band were also a nice touch to the atmosphere and they asked before they stood and played at your table which I appreciated.

river walk

By Neal D |

Had dinner with Granddaughter who is a vegan. She enjoyed her meal as did we with more traditional fare patio overlooking river and people watching

Great meal on the River

By AtlantaGrant |

I’m not sure what all these other people are talking about. We just had a really nice meal at Rio Rio. The fajitas were very good. Chips guac and salsa as well. I’d recommend it.

Ate twice.....dinner , then breakfast on Sunday.

By mike m |

Got a riverwalk-side table. Service was very good on a busy night. Has a good menu, prompt service, food served fresh. A pleasant place to eat and relax. Our only complaint is that the margaritas are way over "tourist" priced. Ate their brunch on Sunday, as a last resort, and were happy we did. It was pretty busy, and the staff was very accommodating. We liked the menu, and the dishes were good. We would be regulars, if we were local.

Not bad at all.

By David H |

Don’t let my title fool you. The food was very good. I definitely enjoyed it and essentially cleared my whole plate. That being said, it was busy and as a result, the drinks and food came slowly, even though it was later in the evening. I suppose most restaurants on the Riverwalk have slower service due to the high volume, but if I had to ding this restaurant on something, slow service would be it. Again, the food was great and our waiter was very obviously doing the best he could. So in that respect, it wasn’t bad at all.

Late breakfast - good

By Cadbanker |

Stopped at Rio Rio for breakfast. Breakfast burritos and huerva ranchers were good. Service was very perky. Prices are moderate.

Some bad, some good

By WhereNext1977 |

Negatives: I ordered bean and cheese nachos off the kids’ menu for my daughter, and what arrived was something I literally could have made in my own microwave. Additionally, there was trash and dropped silverware in the area between our riverside table and the actual river. Positives: Once service started, it was good. The barbacoa street taco was absolutely delicious, and the carnitas street taco was good. I’d go back if I found a cleaner area to sit and would order the barbacoa tacos.

Guacamole excellent

By Let's Go |

We sat on the balcony not at river level and enjoyed this better than 100’s of people walking by your table. Had a coupon for appetizer and chose the guacamole. Very good. Then had a chimichanga. I would return.

On the Bend

By Gary W |

Had a relaxing dinner on the balcony at Rio Rio. The service was ok and staff were friendly. There was plenty of room between tables and there was a good choice of meals. The food was tasty but not spectacular. Prices were reasonable. The cocktails looked good but cannot review them as we didn't order any.

Average Mexican on Riverwalk

By Ben V |

Beautiful location right on Riverwalk with average food. Waiter was nice and good people watching. Would probably eat somewhere else next time.

Fun Lunch on the River and Left Very Full

By Tim W |

We picked this restaurant out while walking by and had a fun lunch. The mariachi band was entertaining and very reasonable at $10. We had the steak and chicken fajitas and left the restaurant very full. Our service was good and our server, Raul, did a great job making sure we had what we needed and wanted.

Yummy Margarita and Mexican Lunch

By HighTravelExpectation |

Great customer service and it's so nice to sit along the Riverwalk and people watch. All while enjoying a yummy Margarita and a very good lunch. Would definitely recommend.

Colorful Place

By MMTYSM |

Lots of color & large margarita glasses! Salsa was fresh & good. Enchiladas were very good & service was timely. Definitely recommend.

Disappointing at best

By Randy B. |

Ahh, our first meal in a restaurant post vaccination after waiting for a year. Unfortunately it was disappointing at best. We ate downstairs were seated promptly at dirty tables. Food took about 30 minutes to arrive. We were given a napkin and a fork, had to specially request a spoon and knife....and only one arrived, not two (and even that took a while). Really, is it that much trouble to give a spoon fork and knife with a napkin? The salsa was bland, and my enchiladas had what seemed like tomato sauce with corn starch as a topping. Yuk. Chicken fajitas dry. The waitress seemed overworked and perhaps they were understaffed, I don't know. I do not write reviews very often, and I refrain from writing negative reviews, but I feel that Rio Rio earned it.

Meh

By Aaron P |

I stopped in for a late dinner, probably around 6:30-7:00. They were busy but not too busy. All of the staff seemed very busy despite that. I’m sure they are understaffed like many places right now. The salsa that came with my chips was good. I was very underwhelmed with the burrito I ordered. It was huge, but very very bland in flavors. Lots of tortilla and rice in it. One of the sides I ordered wasn’t correct, but there was enough food that it wasn’t a problem.

Fantastic place

By Florin M |

Good food, friendly staff, perfect location. Got a table of our choice next to the water, shared the meal with ducks and birds. Good for nature lovers.

AwwwNo

One of the most appalling experiences of my life...... Definitely the worst restaurant in all of San Antonio..... Every single person in my party got food poiisoning.

Lunch with family on the River Walk!

By aliciamrowlands |

Great atmosphere and delicious food! Guacamole is outstanding! We sat on the upper balcony and had a nice breeze! It took quite some time for our server to greet us, when she did she said she’d be back to get our drink orders. This took some time. Upon coming back to get our drink orders she sped off right away, we desired to place our lunch order as well, however she did not listen to our request. Food was great and brought out by other staff members quickly. Our server did not keep up on our refills or that we needed carry out boxes and desired our check. We continuously had to flag her down. Overall food and atmosphere are great, service was a bit to be desired.

The definition of tourist trap

By Stu K |

You might as well go to Taco Bell to dine, the food is as genuine Mexican as Rio Rio. One of the oldest restaurants on the River Walk, Rio Rio is designed for tourists to get a taste of well, Mexican smelling but not tasting food. Overpriced and underseasoned. I cannot think of one redeeming characteristic of this restaurant. Service is spotty and the consistency of the food is not good.

Please don’t waste your time and money

By 4000kylie2016 |

I’m typically not too hard to please, but we stumbled onto this restaurant with no wait time. (First mistake.) I wish I could say that there was only one issue, but it was basically bad from beginning to end. I haven’t had food that bad in a long time, and the service was very slow and we didn’t get a lot of the things we asked for. I swear the margaritas were all mix and no alcohol. Overall, this restaurant costs too much money for what you’re getting. Sorry to say there are no positives to this place.

Horrible service

By Krista Y |

Went for a late lunch on a Sat afternoon. SLOW service. About three tables left before getting service while we were there. Food was just average. Go ahead and wait for better restaurants close by.

Good Tex-Mex Food

By lecan2 |

It is right on the river walk and the food is very good. You will have a wait if you arrive around dinner time. Service is good. We had our triplet grandkids with us and they loved watching the ducks int he river. I would recommend.

Great Food and Atmosphere

By Sarah B |

We had dinner on the River walk. The food was fantastic and margaritas were good. Beautiful with the Christmas lights and the water.

My worst River Walk experience

By 2ndlife07 |

For more than 10 years I've attended an annual conference in San Antonio and have enjoyed the River Walk every time. This was the only dining experience I've had that was unacceptable. My chicken chimichanga was a flour tortilla stuffed with overcooked chicken and covered with a soupy cheese sauce that tasted like under cooked flour. I ate some of the filling but left most of the meal on the plate. My large margarita was billed at $18, not the $9 shown on the menu. My server was friendly and prompt, but she works for a tourist trap...

Yummy food- great view - nice staff

By Penny |

The food was good here. The view is awesome we sat outdoor right next to the river. Staff was friendly service was fast. The Ice tea is SOO a BIG I think 24oz. Price is pretty fair. Had a great time but remember DO NOT FEED THE BIRDS! Enjoy!

Mediocre food and service at best.

By 223dennis |

We were originally set right by bar and front door. Very hot and dark. Offered a seat in actual dining room. Drink and appetizer order place. Had to remind server twice we were even there. Dinner ordered. Wife's and one grandsons order came. After they were about 1/2 done, my burrito and other grandsons order came. Guess she forgot them as well. Barely warm. I ordered the beef burrito and I guess server thought I said bean burrito.

One of our favorite spots

By Laura S |

We were starving and it was getting late. There was plenty room for guest inside and out so they got us in quickly. The service was wonderful. We really enjoyed the Mariachi Band! It is well worth the $20 for them to sing. Their voices are amazing. The food was so yummy. We loved the salsa and chips(You have to buy your salsa and chips). I had the chicken fajita nachos and they were yummy!! The cheese dip was also yummy.

Rio Rio means River River

By 442richard |

This is another great place to experience Tex-Mex food at its best. Wonderful menu and drinks. Good place for people watching, too.

Great nachos

By Beth S |

I had tortilla soup which was bland but ok. I quickly switched to helping husband with the super good beef fajita nachos. Being native Texan, we know nachos and these had large chunks of tasty beef fajita meet along with cheese and beans. The two of us could not finish his order.

Tired, grubby and average

By kmeand |

With all the restaurants on the Riverwalk, we had to pick this one. Staff, generally, were disinterested. Food was OK. Upstairs patio was grubby, inside and toilets likewise. They had no sodas available - at all at lunchtime. They have a prime spot - but not trying to deliver good service smacks of them taking their location for granted and not putting any effort in. Look elsewhere. They don’t deserve your cash.

Willing to try again

By dm03022 |

Went to Rio Rio on the Riverwalk for my birthday. I wasn't impressed with the food but it was okay. It was rainy but we stopped and gave this restaurant a try. The seafood enchiladas was tasty.

Location is great, food not so much

By Clarkston_Rambler |

Go there for the views and people watching, not for high quality food. The chicken tacos and fajitas have white and dark meat pieces which did not go over well with the family. The shredded chicken burrito was pretty good. Salsa was very bland. Will not return.

Highly recommended!

By travelwhere |

Our family enjoyed our first San Antonio Mexican food dinner here. We went in with elderly family in electric scooters. We went in the back door & saw lots of empty tables. Then friendly staff brought us through to the back toward the river walk view. We could’ve eaten outside but it was so wonderfully cool inside we were happy there. The server was very attentive and did a great job. We all enjoyed our food. The chicken fajita serving was so large that my daughter & I shared. (& we were very hungry) . The large tasty servings were fantastic! I wish I would’ve taken some pictures of the food but we were too hungry to think about It!

Ok meal

By luvtotravel0330 |

Our meal was ok. The steak fajitas were good but not what we expected. The steak was more like a roast that had been cut in pieces. Very different. Prickly pear margarita was ok.

Average TexMex at high prices. Good view though

By Felix L |

The food here was fine, but probably not worth the money we paid. The service was average at best, but the main redeeming feature is the views of the riverwalk, which are excellent!

OH SO YUMMY!!

By caligirl7611 |

This was the 2nd Mexican restaurant we tried at the River Walk But was the best! The other is the oldest on the river and it was good, but the quality was superior. Prices a bit higher here at Rio Rio but worth it. We had the street tacos(carnitas and barbacoa) and a barbacoa burrito. WHOA....So good. Stuffed ourselves with that and fresh made guacamole. Sad we are going home tomorrow cuz I would be back.

Great Margaritas

By Mare1599 |

We stopped in to get out of the heat and ended up staying for drinks and appetizers. The margaritas were wonderful as well as the chips, salsa and guacamole. Our waiter was on point and he was physically fit for having to go up and down the stairs. For being so busy, the restaurant was clean and restrooms were okay.

Accommodates Large Groups Inside

By Joseph L |

We had a group of 14. the pushed together roundtable were a bit clumsy. service was okay but the it was a bit noisy even though the place was not crowded. However, if you chose to sit outside (104-106 degrees) it seemed charming. this review is not meant to be negative. Its just that with likely 1,000+ Mexican place to eat in San Antonio may check some other ones out first.

Awesome.

By Lisbet J |

Excellent good. Excellent service. Raspberry margarita is amazing!!!! We went back twice. They accommodated a group that changed size without any issue or concern.

Fast service!! Delicious Mexican food!

By Heidi |

Fast service!! The strawberry margarita was really good as the vegetation quesadilla. Our daughter loved the street tacos, the rice and beans with that were soooo good as well and the tres leches cake which is three layers of vanilla cake soaked in three kinds of milk was a “wow” moment for the three of us 😋😋😋

Nice spot on the Riverwalk

By AustinH6913 |

Pretty good food here. I had a salmon salad. It can get pretty crowded though, so it might good to reserve a table ahead of time.

Good food and great service.

By Nathan B |

Good food and great service. Spent Christmas Day on the river walk and was looking for a restaurant to eat dinner at and glad we found Rio Rio Cantina. We ate in the bar area and the service by Adrian was great. The menue had a variety of choices and we really enjoyed our dinner.

Dinner

By Relax367229 |

So did dinner with the family. Outside on the balcony. Fajitas and street tacos are great. Daughter thoroughly enjoyed the churros! Might just come back again

Total diappointment

By Discover312160 |

The concierge had recommended this place and the mixed grill fajitas. We were seated quickly in a tiny table right by the river. The waiter was brusque and uninformative. He did not ask what,if any, rim I wanted on my drink. When we said we had been told the mixed grill was good, he told us nothing. Then he started to bring massive amounts of food to the table including full pieces of on the bone chicken and uncut beef strips. How are you supposed to make fajitas with that? And it was not even nicely seasoned. We ended up throwing away pounds of food. It was a horrible shame all the way around.

Alamo Bowl Game

Fun place to go walking distance on the Riverwalk. Good food, great staff and clean. Been here on 2 different visits.

Long wait for mediocre service and food

By traveljunky88 |

Not a favorite. Service was slow, food was not so great after that type of wait. This is a one-off visit. Won’t give it a second try.

Not all bad...Not all good

By S E |

The food was ok. The service was great. Very busy. Be prepared to wait 30-1 hour for a table. Overall not too bad.

Helpful staff

By Paul K |

Nice to sit along the river on the river walk for lunch. The service was good, very friendly and helpful, and the food was very good.

Was excited.

By bradley m |

Service was extremely slow, waitress was disorganized. Found something in our salsa, they removed it from the bill but never apologized. Extremely rude!!! Never again!

OH NO RIO

By drylandmurmaid |

DO NOT EAT HERE!! I had an exceptional meal here over 30 years ago, and remembering that brought my wife and two sons to Rio Rio to experience great Mexican food. I almost always read reviews first, but this was last minute and so we just walked in. Basic spices were non existent, vegetables tasted out of a can and were sitting in water, and the cocktails were not only way overpriced, but I doubt alcohol was in them—very reminiscent of of a childhood powdered drink. Pigeon poo coated the ground in several places, they were out of several basic beer choices and ran out of silverware, so we were brought plastic ware which we had to ask for. The waiter confused our table with a different one and so I got up from the table to correct the misunderstanding. Things could not have been worse until Mariachis came to our table and after I had requested Ceilito Lindo decided instead to sing/perform “The Devil went down to Georgia”…like the rest of the evening this was certainly a first. The location on the River Walk is nice, but I can’t imagine why anyone who has had even average Mexican food would ever recommend anyone to go here—I was embarrassed. Finally, I rarely write a review, because most places one visits are somewhere near the middle and subjectively what I don’t like someone else might like, but if a place is amazing or horrible I want to give folks a heads up. This is a tourist trap—stay away!!!

Service seems to get worse every year. Not sure if it was a newer waiter but he couldn’t get anything right from the order to the bill.

Tacos took almost an hour

By Dan G |

After 3 hours on the road coming from Houston, we were ready to get something to eat. Our hotel was on the River Walk, so that's where we decided to find a place to sit, relax, have some drinks, and get some food, and Rio Rio looked like our best bet. Being later at night, 9pm-ish, there were tables available, it had patio seating, and we had a good view of the river. That's where the positive side ended. The server greeted us promptly, and she was very friendly. In a small world turn of events, she was from our part of the world, so she connected immediately. She made recommendations for a swirl margarita for my wife, who ended up enjoying the first one, but decided not to repeat, and brought me a house margarita when I asked for a top shelf one. I was hoping for Don Julio or Patron, but she assured me the house one was good. It wasn't. We then placed our order. The appetizer was on the verge of being ridiculously late when it finally showed up; because we didn't have to look for it or ask our server, we gave that a pass. However, the app was done and gone, and we were on our 2nd drinks, and we still hadn't gotten our food. The server was nowhere to be found. By the time we saw her and flagged her down, the food had "died in the window", so she was having everything redone. All we had ordered were tacos, and it was 10pm by this time. When we made the observation that this shouldn't have happened, she immediately defaulted to the whole "I'll get my manager if you want; he knows what's going on" spiel instead of taking ownership. This prompted the response that if he knew what was going on, he should have been more proactive in handling it. Regardless, we finally got our meal, which was scarfed down instead of being enjoyed due to the late hour, a tired and hangry 6-year-old, and tired and irritated parents. To his credit, the manager did make an appearance and comped the kid's portion of the meal, so that showed some ownership I guess. I don't know that this doesn't happen on a regular basis, so I wouldn't return or make the recommendation to attend.

Keep Going. Don't Stop Here.

By blackrg2002 |

Having dinner with family and stopped here. Thought it was another restaurant with a Rio in its name. Lived in Texas all my life and I know good Mexican food. Bottom line, poor service and subpar food. Choosing chicken fajitas, meat was mostly chicken thighs, not chicken breast. Asked for no sour cream, got sour cream. Asked for an extra plate, had to getup, find manager, who got me the plate. Waiter was absent most of dinner. This just seem to be a tourist trap for people. There we great Mexican restaurants in San Antonio, this just isn't the one.

Great Place on the River

By mmeehh |

We were lucky enough to get a table right on the river for Happy Hour. Reasonably priced drinks, good chips and salsa, great queso and beef dip. Mariachis played tableside. What fun!

Nothing Special, but the view is amazing.

By zgirl1982 |

We were walking the Riverwalk sight seeing and decided to stop here for a quick bite to eat. To be honest, we weren't expecting too much and we were more happy to just sit by the water. We did hit there in time for late happy hour, so our margaritas were about $5 each, which was worth it in itself. Two of us got taco salads, we got a queso, and our little one got a quesadilla. The food was decent enough, but was a little overpriced. All in all, we all got to enjoy the water, the ducks, and ate some food.

Drinks and decent service on the River Walk.

By JALToronto |

Happy Hour provided us with an opportunity to try a few drinks. Margaritas and beer on the cool patio. Salt rim and sugar rim got mixed up but it was ok. The free nachos and salsa were exceptional for the price point.

Riverwalk Dining Delight

By Pamela B |

My husband and I went to explore The Riverwalk and Rio Rio was recommended to us by the staff where we were staying. We weren't disappointed. Our server, Geraldo, was very personable and fun. We weren't seated right by the river, but that was okay. It was a nice atmosphere with a mariachi band wandering among the tables. The guacamole was excellent! All-in-all, a nice place to eat out of the many Riverwalk options.

Should be called Rio DIARRHEO

By Happy09bear |

OMG, where do I start. Yesterday on St. Patrick's Day we took friends/family from OOT to this place on the riverwalk. The drinks were warm and the food was cold. It took 1.5 hours to be served, and this is once we were able to get a table! I ordered 12 bean and cheese nachos. When they arrived there were 20 chips strewn on a plate with beans everywhere and white COLD cheese poured on top, not even eatable. Someone ordered 2 crispy tacos which when delivered were taco meat in white tortillas! My GF has an upset stomach she is blaming on the hot sauce. UGGH. Rita's are very weak. All this and a $89 bill. BYE BYE RIO RIO.

Lunch date

By Zippy |

Walked along the river and wanted a margarita and some fajitas! It did not disappoint! Claudia was our server and she was spectacular! The green iguana margarita was sooo good!! There were lots of ducks also looking for lunch! They were adorable!

Awesome all around !!

By Traye C |

Spectacular food atmosphere and service. Jacob was top notch and spot on even though it was busy he was fantastic Worth it for sure!!!!!!

Tex-Mex by the river

By Daffodil7404 |

Not only was the quality of the food good--we had excellent beef fajitas and tacos--but our server was friendly and attentive. The side dish of beans was spicy and very tasty. We really enjoyed having lunch by the water and were amused by the ducks who were hoping for a tidbit.

Awesome location

By Criz66 |

Great that it’s on the river walk and we sat along the river. Had a good time. Margaritas and nachos. Nachos were good, but nothing fantastic. Our waiter was a bit of a goof. We got our nachos before we got our drinks, he was slow, he gave us the wrong check...it was just kind of a joke. Beautiful view makes up for a lot tho

Horrible Experience

By Jenne J |

The worst experience ever! We sat at our table around 11:20. No one was there except us. We decided to sit upstairs and the table we sat at was directly in the sun, but the tables are metal so the reflection made it much brighter. So my husband decided to move into the shaded area. Both the manager and server seem annoyed that he moved. The manager was walking out to our table and he was like “I guess they want to move”. Still not saying much at all to him. While all of this was happening, my two daughters and I were trying to use the upstairs restroom in which there was a man in there cleaning. Instead of him letting us use the restroom he said you would have to go downstairs. So we went downstairs to use the restroom and it smelled horrible in the bar area. Which is where you walk through to get to the restroom. The bathroom was dirty as well. When I came back upstairs this is when all of the interaction with the server and manager were very uncomfortable for both my husband and I. They proceeded to get a umbrella and cover the seats we were originally sitting in. When my husband stated that we would have stayed over there if we knew y’all had an umbrella servers response was “well I didn’t know you would want that”. So we said we may move back over there, and she was very annoyed. So at that point we decide we would just pay for our drinks that were not even touched. It was $4 per soda and then they charged us for chips and salsa also at $4 ( we didn’t even touch) The whole experience was very uncomfortable and for the prices they charge I would NOT recommend them at all!

Terrible Service

By Lisa C |

After walking the Riverwalk, we were hungry tired and thirsty but We were refused service!! The hostess told us to go up to the balcony to be seated and she would message a server. Although tired and thirsty from walking we obliged. No one came to our table so I went inside while my husband sat at the table. A server met me at the door and said she would be right out. On the way out I see another waitress at the table talking to my husband. He tells me we are being run off. She then turns around and says” I don’t know why they told you to come up here! We close in 10 minutes!” It was 9:30. After going back down the stairs we tell the hostess that we were refused service. She looks confused at the waitresses that were next to her but never says she was sorry nor does she ask us to wait. We go two stops down to the next place where we were greeted with a smile and our choice of seating. Service and food were great at The Original Mexican Restaurant conveniently two doors down. After paying for our delicious meal and drinks we passed by to see that this establishment was still open at 10:30!! DO NOT stop at Rio Rio very rude people!! 😡👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻

An average Mexican restaurant With good service

By Ed S |

The food was very typical a touristy Mexican restaurant. Nothing was bad and It was good but typically average. The service was above average given the difficulty of managing crowds during a pandemic. It did seem like the menu was summer limited compared to other restaurants in the area. The sangria was very good.

Mexican swing

By Ralph T |

After the riverwalk we enjoyed our Mexican dinner at Rio Rio - delicious enchiladas joined by the perfect Mexican sound of a three-man-band. Very nice and supportive staff.

Great service

By StephIU1995 |

Dinner on day one in the city. Seated next to the water with good views. Food was good-service was impeccable. Shout out to Nathan and his female helper for being so attentive. Always refreshed drinks...we loved the queso blanco and I had great chicken fajitas...hubby loved his margarita!

Oh, Wow, fantastic!

By Donn D |

we were seated right on the river side and our waiter, Angel, was with us immediately, brought water, took drink orders and shortly thereafter, chips and a fantastic salsa, which we extremely well with their guacamole. their chicken enchiladas were great as were their fajitas and chicken taco dinner. Margaritas were excellent. we have eaten at many Mexican restaurants and this was the best overall Mexican meal we have ever had. not to be missed!

Amazing food and service!

By Kendrick La |

We ordered a quesadilla, a single taco and a shredded chicken burrito smothered in verde sauce with a side of borracho beans. Also a side of queso which had to be the best queso we've ever had! Our server was kind a courteous, not extremely busy.

Try the Churros. The End.

By NoinahJaeb |

We were travelling in a group and were with kids. We were seated by the river and suddenly there was a downpour. We had to scurry and carry our plates into the restaurant by ourselves; the help from the staff came when we were 75% done shifting. Perhaps they were shorthanded or they were equally helping other guests. Service was very slow for a weekday; the food was mediocre and nothing to rave about. The Churros was the saviour.

Mexican

Really good authentic Mexican food in great place great service and quality food in perfect surroundings also very nice atmosphere

Good margaritas

By BriannaW2323 |

We only stopped here to have chips/queso and drinks. Great margaritas and service, even on the second floor balcony! Great people watching from up there. Hope to go back and have actual meal one day.

Great food at a very reasonable price

By Richard O |

My most recent visit to Rio Rio was on a Saturday mid afternoon. I have been here several time over the past 20+ years. They have inside dining as well as outside covered or uncovered balcony seating on the river walk. It the evening I love to sit on the balcony & people watch as the river cruise boats pass by. As it was a sunny afternoon in June & 90+ degrees out, i chose to sit under the balcony in the shade along the river walk. For lunch I ordered the Chicken Fajitas, which come with Chips, salsa , Rice, beans, a corn salad, & fresh warm tortillas. The meal was under $12.00. I also ordered their chips & 3 salsas as a to go to be enjoyed later. My Server was Debra & she was awesome , stopping by often to check in to make sure everything was alright & that I did not need anything. I only had water to drink, as I had a 200 mike drive home . They do have wonderful large margaritas here , but make sure to confirm the price before ordering, as they cost around $15.00 each, which can add up quickly ! Look at the picture if all of that food for less than $12.00 ! I will be back 😎

Going to Pass Next Time

By Kathy S |

The host was very nice and the view was too, but that's about where the good things to say end. The waiter was very unfriendly and took a very long time to get our order and never checked back to see how our meals were. He never asked us if we wanted to have drinks, I had to ask him if they had sangria, to which I was told yes. The sangria came as red wine poured over ice with no fruit of any kind in it and they charged me $12 for it. The food was very bland. The rice was crunchy and the beans were not good. Would not dine here again.

Great food and intriguing history!

Trying to beat the heat, we stopped here to try something new. The service was a bit slow at first, but when the waiter came, he was helpful, the food was awesome, and they shared the history of the area and building with us before we left! TRY THE QUESO!!

Great Service

By pattie t |

You can sit right by the river. The service is GREAT (Bianca was wonderful). The frozen Margaritas and Three amigos appetizer were Yummy

Disappointing Food

By Pen1313 |

We actually never got as far as the meal itself. One of us ordered OJ, which tasted like it had started to turn bad. The chips were thick, not fresh, and not tasty. The salsa was an unappetizing grey, so we didn’t even taste it. We ended up just paying for the drinks and leaving.

High priced

By Nated2519 |

The food was average but high priced. Of course this is because it's on the river walk. Service was not great in the beginning, but Samuel came to the rescue and made the experience better.

Not Your Michael Nesmith Rio - Just a Rio by Another Name

By GenoMichiganYooper |

Not a brand new venue, but fairly clean, and kept in shape....tables by the river, nice view until the ducks/birds start to walk under your table and between your feet. Mostly two/three chair tables, including some with umbrellas by the riverside..larger tables seating inside or under the larger canopy of the building. Food was reasonable cost, good portions, but nothing to write home to Mom about. My wife had the taco salad, and it satisfied her hunger....I had the chicken fajitas, same story....nothing really large to complain about.....nothing great to complement about... Service was good/very good.....location is awesome...food came without any great delays.....our only issue was the waterfowl mingling with us....but we are from Upper Michigan.....there are always some form of wildlife trying to engage us at/in/over/under our home... We both give this a try-it/you could do much worse rating, it is a central tourist area, sometimes you have to take what you can get....and sometimes you just need to make it through the day....and this place would work.. Not impressed

By KML2531 |

The food was very average. The prices were on the high end of moderate. The view on the River Walk was excellent

By Vic L |

We had a party of five and all agreed that the seating upstairs outside overlooking the river walk was much preferred over sitting at river level. Food was very good as was the service.

Fun place to people watch

By sylviaroland |

The food at Rio Rio is delicious, but the best thing about the place is the location. We watched numerous boats float by with people waving at us, people walking the Riverwalk, and musicians playing to tables near ours. I had vegetarian fajitas, and they were very good. The best thing I had, though, was guacamole. It had peppers sprinkled atop, and they spiced up the guacamole nicely. Service wasn’t attentive because a few waitresses were assigned lots of tables, but ours was friendly.

Great River Walk Dining

By A&J |

Yes, most restaurants at the River Walk are over priced and the food is so-so and this one is really no different, but we did enjoy ourselves and it was better than other Mexican restaurants we tried in the area. We did sit at a small table right beside the river, which we loved. The location is amazing as you can people and animal watch. There were ducks right at my feet who begged for food, but we heeded the warnings and didn't feed them, although a little girl next to us did. My husband and I both ordered a Michelada to drink and it was GREAT!! We ordered the salsa trio and each of us ordered the lunch tacos. The Barbacoa were AMAZING and the Al Pastor tacos were ok. The salsas were good. One was great, the other two just good. Our server was friendly. It did take a while to get our food, but we had a great view and great drinks so we didn't mind. We will return here if in the area again!!

Worst customer service possible!

By Zorro0795 |

Worst customer service possible! Food not good and manager doesn’t have any customer service skills.

Yummy and music

By Cyndi G |

Live music and great fajitas made the long walk around river walk on a SNOW day in San Antonio (who knew) a great idea. So glad we tried it.

NOT GOOD FOOD AT ALL

By caroline d |

The food is NOT good ! I had the chicken fajitas and the chicken was weird and not good. It was rubbery like they boiled it and then re heated it. The peppers and onions were hardly cooked and the salsa is awful. I am not sure if they thought they forgot the garlic and added more but that was all you could taste in the salsa. I like garlic but that was terrible. The only redeeming part of the meal was the strawberry margarita. It was really good. We ended paying $120 for a terrible meal. I will not be back. I wish I would have read reviews first.

Prickly Pear Margarita is awesome!

By Skaywhit |

My boyfriend and I showed up on the riverwalk side right around happy hour. We ordered a prickly pear margarita and listened to the mariachi that was a few tables down. We tried the salsa trio, it wasn’t that good. The house salsa is way better. We continued to order beers after the margarita, the beer selection isn’t necessarily appealing to the craft beer lover, BUT great for just hanging out on the river.

RioRio

By NF |

Great street tacos, shrimp and carnita. Great margaritas. Great Guacamole fresco. Sat inside at bar area. Only 6 people inside. Lots of people outside. It was full.

Nice location, mediocre food

By Rick W |

Nice location but just average food. Wanted guacamole fresca, but they make ahead of time so we declined because we do not like cilantro. Forgot about us when seated, so took a while to get served. Salsa bland, hand a hunk of a quarter tomato. Chips broken into quarter sized pieces. Almost fell over in my chair because loose drain cover behind my chair. Napkins came without silverware. Beef burrito was mostly tortiilla, lacking much filling and the filling was lukewarm. Chicken chalupas were average. Only good thing was a nice waiter.

Disappointing service, average food

By a2zbrewer |

Our server was not welcoming nor informative when asked about the menu. And this is a small thing but the small things add up, we were not offered chips and salsa upon arriving though we witnessed that the other patrons were. The serving sizes were large, but the quality was average at best, especially for the price.

Worst Service Ever

By Pierce K |

The worst service ever. We walked inside of the restaurant and saw advised to pick a seat. Mine you there were only two tables occupied. We selected a table with 4 chairs and was advised to move. We stated we wanted to set at the table we selected. The waitress advise the 4 person table was gor a large party. I stated we would like to sit at this table. She made a smart Ass comment and chuckled. We left.

The food was amazing

By Deka L |

My family and I visit Rio Rio yesterday while on spring break. The food was amazing. Everything was fresh and hot (Just the way I like my food). In addition, thank you so much for the outstanding customer service.

Marginal food and service

By drdjford |

The food was just okay. To say it was warm, would be a compliment. The drinks were also just okay; but way too pricey. If I were visiting San Antonio again, I would NOT go to that restaurant again.

A FUN SPOT TO PEOPLE WATCH

By Dan4285 |

We paid a visit to the Rio Rio Cantina on the San Antonio River Walk over Father’s Day weekend. It was a very hot Sunday afternoon. Our mission was simply: enjoy some drinks, a snack, and do some people watching. Consequently, this review can’t comment on the dinning experience. We sat next to the balcony stairs where there was some shade. Dozens of river tour boats motored by crammed with people waving at us. There were many folks walking the River Walk and slipping into souvenir shops to look for mementos as well as grab a few minutes to cool off. There were dozens of ducks swimming and scrounging the bank for tidbits dropped by visitors, and Mariachis strumming guitars and singing near our table. The drinks were good, from the San Antonio-brewed lager to a very well made Oaxacan Margarita. And, for what could be called a “tourist trap” they weren’t ridiculously priced. We also ordered a double order of Salsa and chips. For a little tourist joint the salsa was excellent. Service, as you might expect, is sometimes good and sometimes awful a these types of places. We have to say, our server was very friendly and very attentive. While Rio Rio’s Naked Iguana Tequila Bar isn’t a memorable culinary spot, it’s a good pick along the river.

Tex-Mex on the River

By BS |

Rio Rio is a great place to enjoy Tex-Mex on the San Antonio River Walk. They have a great selection of dishes and every one we tried was excellent. The Margaritas are good and the prices are reasonable. When the weather is nice it is great to sit outside and watch the people and river barges go by.

local scenery

By jon s |

fun place to grab a bite along the river walk. food is ok - nothing great but certainly edible. can sit right along the river and watch folks wander by. service is quite good. i would gladly eat here again.

LOCATION, SERVICE! PRICES! GREAT FOOD!

By 965deborahv |

Glad we walked upstairs for this one! Easy to find on the river walk. It’s above another Mexican Restaurant so don’t miss it. Outdoor heaters for cool days. Attentive service, good quality fresh food. Prices more reasonable than many other menu es on the Riverwalk.

Wedding reception in party room

By Oscar Ron |

Great service, historic building, large balcony patio on the Riverwalk! Bathrooms and air-conditoning are historic also.

Come for the view the rest is awful

By BiffleYouRock |

My own fault for coming back after the last time was awful! Casa Rio was rude and said they had no tables even though the empty ones were still empty after we finished eating at Rio Rio so settled for Rio Rio. Waitress was really nice but all the hospitality in the world can’t make up for sub sub par food and drinks! Sangria had no fruit and tasted like dish soap. Queso was cheap not even velveeta slime, flautas were about pinky sized, guacamole was bland and tasteless only saving grace was adding the salsa to it. Top it all off by our card being charged for someone else’s meal that was more than twice as much as ours...now WE have to wait for the charge to be credited!!! Lesson learned absolutely won’t ever go back!

Great view on river walk

By sandmcd |

This Tex-mex food is average. We had enchilada lunch specials. The pinto beans were the best part of the meal, but I did enjoy getting to choose which enchiladas to put on the plate. We really enjoyed the mariachi bands coming by to play while we were eating.

Margarita!

By Diane1437 |

Was walking on the Riverwalk and wanted a margarita and chips and salsa. We had the frozen green iguana margarita. It was so tasty! We sat outside on the river. The waitress was great. We will be back!

Good food with nice atmosphere

By Caleb C |

Stopped in for lunch snack while out walking the river. Had appetizers and it was really good. Tried the salsa which was had a great flavor and the chips were crisp and hot! The guacamole was really good but a little smooth for me, like it had been in a blender. The queso was also amazing! Service was very good especially for us just ordering snacks.

EMILY is terrible

By ML D |

EMILY is terrible. Not sure what her job title is but she is not one of the waitress. She is the one who took us to our table. No manners, disrespectful, looks like she is not happy with her job. We requested for a new table because the table that they gave us is direct exposure to the sun at 2pm as if you are by the beach and doing sun bathing. She was not happy for us asking a new table but she still clean the new table with an attitude banging all the the dirty plates. That is so ridiculous. Management needs to talk to her she should not act like that. But In all fairness with our waitress that serve us is really nice.

Fabulous Margaritas and Blanco Queso

By Lynne or Hayley S |

Great Queso (white), great service, Best Margarita I had on the river. Fabulous views and fun times!!

Great Tex-Mex on the Riverwalk!

By tngregscott |

Prices are a little higher here, but so were the portions. Service was a little slow, but not crazy and we weren't in a hurry anyway. The food was fantastic! Would definitely come back.

Great location and fajitas

By pineypaydirt |

We wanted some Tex Mex while visiting the Riverwalk. We found an open table right next to the river during lunch time. The steak fajitas was really good, a must try. The service was ok but not great. However the waiter did try to give us some tips and pointers for things to do around town.

Recent San Antonio visit

By EdMustaffa |

The service was slow the night we visited. What they lacked in speed they made up for in food quality. I ordered tacos al pastor. They had just the right spice / heat. Guacamole and quest appetizers were very good!

Tourist trap

By Sarah C |

Terrible food and drinks. It’s a tourist trap and random people sell stuff at you the whole time. Lovely waitress but service was very slow.

So So

By keffan |

Food was ok. The chicken tenders on the kids chicken plate was very salty and the fries were very soggy. My husband and I both got fajitas (one beef, one chicken). We both agreed it was lacking in flavor; I think it needed more spice. My adult daughter liked her enchiladas but she also doesn't care for food with much spice. Probably the best part of the meal was the queso dip. I thought that was very good. Our waitress was nice and the wait times for each step were appropriate. The food portions were very large and even our lunch portions were too big to finish. I really enjoyed the outside dining area. The entire experience was ok but it wasn't enough to bring me back for a repeat visit.

Bad service

By Joel V |

They have a really nice location with a view of the river but A Bad service, I asked them several times for a fork to eat and they never brought it to me, I had to eat with the sauce spoon, and they didn't give me napkins either

Service (And Food) Landed In The Rio

By MRobertson |

Went to Rio Rio with a small group of 6 for dinner on a Saturday evening. The restaurant was a little busy but we only waited 5 minutes for a table. The waiter started out friendly but when he delivered the food he didn’t have the plates secured on his arm and they slid and the food was dumped on 2 in our party. The waiter went back for a second round of food and French Fries were dumped on the same 2 people. The waiter said sorry but didn’t really seem very sorry. When I asked the waiter to comp. the meal (only for 1 victim) he seemed offended. He said it was only an accident. True......it was an accident but we had to ask for napkins to clean up (twice) and he didn’t really help or seem concerned. The whole situation took the fun out of our dinner get-together. So many good choices on the River-Walk but this is not one of them - Fail.

Margaritas on the River Walk

By Larry T |

Always enjoy good classical margaritas, guacamole and chips on the River Walk in San Antonio. Good service and good food too.

Food Good Service NO Bueno

By Josue C |

My two visits to Rio Rio were average. The first time was early enough for breakfast, settled for the huevos rancheros, I was very satisfied with them, but the server took a long time to bring us condiments. The second time was for lunch and I had the chicken fajitas, it was good but not close to the best I've had, and again the service was not good, it just seemed that the servers tried to handle too many things at once, they might have been under staffed. The atmosphere is awesome, located on the river walk, Rio Rio has a lot of outdoor seating. Overall, I wish I could recommend Rio Rio, but the service at the time was not good, again I believe that they were under staff, but it still takes away from overall experience. Hopefully their situation gets better.

Dinner on the river walk

By Jimwillett |

This place was very busy and very crowded. They put tables very close together and also partly on the river walk itself. The waiter we had was awesome and truly overworked he was running to serve all of his tables. I had a burrito and my wife had fish tacos they were okay but not good enough to go back.

Classless Management

By Ashley G |

The manager is absolute TRASH. We were sitting on the patio upstairs and she accused our 3yr old of tearing down their cheap decor hung on the railing. She glared at him and shook her head. When my husband questioned why she felt it necessary to be rude to a CHILD, she attempted to argue with my husband. Continuing to accuse our son of pulling down a plastic decoration. Mind you, we had literally just sat down. Terrible customer service. She needs to be fired for her poor treatment of customers with small children. Hospitality isn’t her strong suit. Pathetic.

Nice location on the river - good food

By KAG0303 |

Nice location on the river walk. The food was excellent. We started with guacamole Fresco - made with avocados, sea salt, tomatoes, onion, cilantro, roasted garlic and fresh lime and orange juice. I love guacamole and this was some of the best I’ve had in a while. I also had the grilled shrimp tacos, which had a delicious chipotle aioli sauce. The sides of black beans and Elote - corn with creama, quest fresco and chile powder - was kind of bland. One member of our party was vegan and was able to get veggie fajitas that she said was really good. The service was good. I would definitely eat here again.

Not what I expected....

By Breaktrack1 |

I strolled the Riverwalk in search of a good dinner and thought I’d try a different place for Mexican food than I usually go to and came upon Rio Rio. A decent menu and the staff were very courteous and personable. I had a great frozen margarita and ordered an enchilada dinner. The enchiladas were very disappointing to say the least. The rice & retried beans were good, and the guacamole was pretty good. I probably will not return.

SOOO GOOD!

By Wendy Gray |

We love Mexican food and this was by far a favorite by this family of 4! The margaritas were great, too!

Not Good

By Charlie |

Location-amazing! Views-amazing! Service-pretty decent. Food-not good. I had such high hopes for good Mexican food while visiting San Antonio. This isn't even mediocre Mexican food. The beans were literally just dumped out of a can. No seasoning, no flavor, still had the syrupy type liquid that comes in a can of pinto beans. I ate 2 bites, couldn't stomach any more. I also had chicken tacos. They had very little flavor. I really wanted to like this place because it was such a nice spot on the River Walk. There are 3 Mexican restaurants in a row. This is NOT the one to stop at. Taco Bell has better food.

Just OK

By Staunchest |

The parade was on, and unfortunately my favorite Mexican restaurant Casa Rio was closed. We had already left Mercado, and we should have gone in hind sight to Mia Tierra. So by default it was Rio Rio. Service was awlful. Food was OK. Marguerita was one of the best I have ever had. It is a choice for last resort, but not one of my favorite places to eat.

Best food

By tinaw11371 |

The restaurant has a upper patio overlooking the riverwalk and in a great location. The food was amazing. This is a great Mexican place that I can actually rave about the food and the service. Our waitress was so pleasant and helpful.

Poor food

By Ahmed S |

Last week-end, with some friends stopped to eat diner at this restaurant. Clearly the food is terrible, not even worth a fast food joint. The grilled mahi mahi 3 tacos at $19 were of quality so poor that I can't believe I was in San Antonio. The tacos pita was old and brittle that could not hold the food with breaking in pieces. There were 3 very small pieces of mahi mahi in the tacos and mainly filled with salad/tomatoes. My friends order the beef fajita which was mainly onions and sparse chewy beef. The server was decent and when was told about the quality of food his reaction looked something he has heard over and over. A joint on the river that attract mainly tourists not matter what the quality of the food. Why would they improve it? For the same price you can find a much better restaurant. Unfortunately there is no lower than 1 star

Great food, great service

By Sam S |

The food and service here are wonderful. Excellent Tex-Mex cuisine and excellent service for a reasonable price

NOT worth it!

By VanEsq12 |

There are so many restaurants on the Riverwalk, and I wouldn't pick this one. It wasn't great in any regard. The service was marginal, the food quality low, and the price high for what you received. Have you ever had black beans so dry you could break a tooth? Get them here. Do you like lukewarm chips that are unsalted and lean towards the greasy side? They have some. No free refills on soft drinks. It just wasn't a good experience. I recommend eating elsewhere.

Just okay

By C K |

The food is ok, nothing special. The margarita was also so so. The atmosphere is the draw here. Affordable so I guess you get what you pay for.

Good Food and Service

By Greg F |

The menu has a great variety. We all got a lunch special. The chip and salsa were very fresh. We all enjoyed our meals. Our waitress was great. Very attentive and friendly. The churros were a nice end.

Sit down on the River Walk

By TrueTexasTraveler |

Rio Rio is a delightful spot on the River Walk. We were able to snag a table right by the river and thoroughly enjoyed it. The service is attentive and classy. The food is very good. You get free chips and salsa but it's worth springing for their Trio of Salsas with the chicharrones. Breakfast is served until one, which is nice if you go for lunch and want Huevos Rancheros. The rest of the menu is standard Tex-Mex and Mexican fare, with nice flavors to compliment the enjoyable atmosphere. It's River Walk expensive, but enjoyable.

Breakfast on the River

By tphybridtx |

Rio Rio is located amidst what I would call the main restaurant row along San Antonio’s historic Riverwalk. It is just a couple of blocks away from the Alamo, and is a great choice for breakfast on the River if you are staying downtown. Actually, it is one of the only options along the Riverwalk if you are looking for an early meal. The Juevos Rancheros was a good choice for me, and my daughter and her husband both had delicious breakfast tacos. The service was fast, friendly and efficient. The hot sauce was housemaid and first-rate. Try and get a table riverside. It is a great atmosphere, especially with the local ducks and birds who will keep you on your toes during the meal. Breakfast for four, cost us $60, including tip. They are open 24/7, but I have only eaten here for breakfast. Check it out if you are hungry late, or early. Christmastime on the Riverwalk is enchanting. Enjoy...

Nice location - tourist food

By Jean-Paul L |

The location close the river is nice. But food is mediocre, service is OK but it gives the feeling the client is the chain cash-cow. Expensive for what it is with no atmosphere.

Try somewhere else

By Wendy R |

This restaurant was recommended by our Uber driver so we found it as soon as we got here. The food was okay but our service left much to be desired. Our waiter never came back to check on us or refill our drinks one single time.

Disappointed on Wed. Nite

By Scarlettdm |

Ate dinner here midweek, hoping to have a good taste from a Mexican menu. One word describes this food: SALTY!! My husband usually doesn't mind a bit extra salt, but even he said this food was WAAAY TOO SALTY! This included the tortilla chips, the guacomole, the tortilla soup, and the fajitas!! Someone must have dumped a ton of salt in Wednesday's cooking! We will never return to this place. The ambience on the Riverwalk and our nice server were the only two good things about this place!

Great food and atmosphere

By Andy P |

Had dinner along the riverwalk and enjoyed our experience. Drink were discounted during happy hour. The chips and salsa were freshly made. The chips were warm and crispy and the salsa had just the right amount of heat for our liking. Our dinners arrived promptly and were delicious. My wife had a burrito, and I had fajitas. The portions were huge. I have a large appetite and I couldn't finish. A great experience, highly reccomend! The only negative was that we had to ask our server 3 times for a glass of water. Otherwise they get a 5.

Authentic Mexican food

By Bonnie B |

Dan had the quesadilla which he shared with me. It was wonderful. One meal would have been plenty for the two of us. I ordered two tacos. They were ok, but the quesadilla was much better.

Excellent fish taco

By kmartinson4 |

The fish taco was very good, full of flavor. The waitress seemed to be a little high however and was pretty scattered. All in all it was a good experience.

Great outside dining

By Fatemia F |

We ate here as soon as we landed in San Antonio. Food was good. Atmosphere was great. Outside dining was excellent.

Worst Experience Ever!

By MareRad |

I don’t know where to begin to describe this fiasco. Our server took about 10 minutes to appear & acknowledge us. Our drink order took 10 more minutes to arrive. The food order was simple- chicken fajita nachos. We had no plates on which to eat individually. We received nachos that significantly lacked cheese & beans. More importantly, there was no sour cream, which was listed as a side. Our server was nowhere to be found, so we flagged down another server who finally brought our plates, along with sides of guacamole & jalapeños. We never got any sour cream which was what we’d asked for! Overall, the nachos were sub-par to any we’ve had in recent memory. The server was inattentive, to say the least. He appeared to be serving quite a few tables, even though there seemed to be plenty of staff on hand. He was also pretty clueless about proper serving. Either he didn’t care, or he wasn’t properly trained. Regardless, the blame should be placed squarely on management for enabling such poor service. The restaurant setting next to the Riverwalk was lovely. However, there are many restaurants along the Riverwalk that have great views. No doubt, there is much better food & service to be found as well. We will not return to this restaurant, nor would we recommend it to anyone visiting San Antonio.

I can’t actually review the

By Heidi S |

I can’t actually review the food here because I made reservations at 3pm in the afternoon for dinner at 6pm. We showed up at 5:30, and at 7 pm we went next door to the Original Mexican Restaurant and we were seated in 10 minutes. Yep, these guys deserve a 1.and at 7:00 we came over to

Good place to see the Riverwalk.

By suzval2017 |

We stopped in the evening at this great place on the Riverwalk. We were a party of 8 and were happy to sit on the second floor (street level) and overlook the walkway below... especially since we had a tired 2yr old with us. The food was delicious and plentiful. I wish we had shared because it was too much to eat. My Chimichanga was one of the best I've ever had. The chips were warm and the salsa was good.

Was ok at best.

By JB468WD |

The waiter was friendly, attentive and willing to help. The weak review was more along the line of the food and atmosphere. The restaurant could use some updating as it looked a bit dingy. It was also very dark on the inside. The food was average. I guess if the cost would have been 30% less, may chalk it up to you get what you pay for. It was too expensive for what it was. We had dinner on a Friday evening and it was one of the only places we could get in without a long wait, now we see why. I don't like to leave bad reviews, but with a little work this could be a good experience. The food wasn't awful, just very average. I wish I would have read reviews on this before going in, would have been worth the wait in retrospect.

Average

By lindsey t |

My family and I went to Rio Rio after it was recommended by a hotel employee. They were able to seat a large group very quickly, and had GREAT service. The margaritas were good, but the food was just sub par mexican food....unfortunately nothing special. In fact, a lot of us did not exactly enjoy the meal. The margaritas and our server made up for it!

Best Fajitas Ever!

By CPlumlee |

Outstanding fajitas and margaritas!!! We ordered the combination beef and chicken fajitas. The portion was huge and as a Mexican food fan I can say these were in the top three best I ever had. Great way to cool off after your walk on the river walk.

Riverside eating

By Roslyn D |

Not as fancy as Boudros next door, but still pretty good. The fish tacos were good as was the prickly pear margarita. My companion had the fajitas and it was huge.

Terrible service

By Reema V |

It was a Friday evening meal they were not too busy but the interactions between servers was like a fight through out. I ordered my fajitas vegetarian and I think they forgot...it took them 45 mins to figure it tasted very avg avoidable pksce

Not like it use to be

By Roxann G |

I use yo love this place but this trip their food was not as good as it use to be. The queso was cold and clumpy and the tortilla soup was too salty. I'm hoping they were just having s bad night because we usually enjoy everything.

High prices and terrible meat!

By Vanessa |

Our guacamole and chips were Okay. After we waited for 45 min we finally got our entree. The waitress apologized numerous times for the wait, and time it took. She was nice, but slow. I had ordered the street tacos Akaushi and chicken. Chicken was not good, but the Akaushi were awful. I’ve had wagyu, but this was not it, it had to have been spoiled. There was such a terrible aftertaste I can’t begin to describe. My tacos were drenched in grease/oil and I couldn’t force myself to eat them. My husband ordered the combo plate and he was not impressed either. Our table was so wobbly our drinks almost toppled over. Highly do not recommend. Try somewhere else for the high prices!!

Go somewhere else

By TundraT |

Reconsider and don’t eat here. I was looking for Casa Rio since it is u see renovation decided to give this place a try. The staff tells you there is a 1.5hr waiting without listening to the customer’s question. Really rude staff. After sat, the waiter never came back to check if we needed water or anything ese. The restaurant served the most watery salsa you will ever see in San Antonio. It was disgusting! The floors were and tables were/are dirty even after they are wiped. The food does not always look well presented, the enchiladas are awful, but the fajita plate and the borracho beans are fine. You can have the same view and better food somewhere else.

Our First TexMex Meal in San Antonio

By IGoVacations |

We sat along the river at a bistro table with an umbrella and shared a plate of fajitas. So glad we shared, as it was a large portion. The waiter was attentive, but not overly so. The view was beautiful and even though the pigeons were a bit annoying, it was worth it.

Was it a bad day?

By Jo E |

So, went for lunch, bad move. We were served a soggy watery plate of slop, tasteless. Just awful. Looked at a group of other diners, they didn't eat their meals either. First time here, certainly the last. Staff were ok, meals, definitely not.

Food Good-Service Awful

By Travelin' Man |

The food was good. The street tacos were fantastic- Pastor is the way to go. The service was extremely slow and inattentive-some of the worst service I have ever experienced.

Good was great

By Victor S |

I would suggest you share the food because there is a lot of it. It right along the river so the boats are coming by often. The service was great. During the afternoon it’s very hot sooooo. The band that came around and sang to us was a treat. There is a lot of people walking by so that can be distracting.

Pathetic service coupled with pathetic food.

By Chris G |

Rio Rio changed their name to "Terrible Terrible. Beyond disappointing. This place does not deserve to be on the Riverwalk. Unless... The theme for restaurants on the Riverwalk is sucking.

Food was good, portions were fair sized.

By Nancy M |

Seemed a bit disorganized for seating. Waiter was attentive, crowded, at right next to the river. Food was good and portions were fair sized - no left overs.

Nothing special

By Marilyn R |

Chips and salsa were unfortunately the best part of the meal. Lettuce was brown, shrimp was tough. Waited 35 minutes for table which is totally acceptable if no tables are available but the restaurant was less than 1/2 full so seemingly there are staffing or service issues. Service was very slow and without personality.

Great waitress, bland food

Stopped in on our visit to the riverwalk, was seated on the upstairs patio, great location overlooking the river, our waitress was great but they was so under staffed that she was running back and forth to get our drinks and take our order... the food was average mexican food but not what I would have expected here at this location, very bland not much flavor, wouldn't go back.. the only thing that was good was the Waitress and the view..

Above average food with average service but good location

A good place next to the river. The food was above average but not outstanding. It needs some spicing up. Service was average. Not our favorite stop on the Riverwalk

Great view of the river walk

The weather was perfect to sit on the outdoor upper patio were we had a great view of the river and the walkway on the other side of the river. Paulo was a great waiter, attentive and helpful. The fajita combo and enchilada we shared was more then enough to satisfy three people. Drinks included a Prickly Pear Marquita and local beer. An enjoyable time to sit and visit with friends in a wonderful atmosphere on the river walk.

Salty chips

By Mike W |

We started snacking on the chips and salsa - the salsa was good, the chips were very salty. They were the saltiest chips I've ever had. Also had the queso - which was ok - nothing special. Had the shrimp tacos - just ok. This place had fans blowing on us, which I couldn't figure out why - it wasn't very hot - so maybe because there would be flys otherwise?? We did notice another restaurant along the river had fans as well. Service was average. Probably would not go again.

Average at best

The food was average and the service was less than that. We had to ask for such things as eating utensils and napkins. We had to wait for refills on drinks and then got the famous "eye roll" indicating... what next. Best part of the meal found the famous Kangaroo Court cheesecake. Best part of the meal!

This place has changed (for the worse) over the years.

I was excited to get Rio Rio and show my kids a fun Riverwalk experience! Well- they sat our family of four at a teeny table on the "patio" which really just seems more like upstairs bar overflow, at a bar table. We had no table room at all, like I had to move my drink anytime I wanted to grab a chip and dip it, which would have been less annoying if the food was not horrible. I grew up in SA, and have been to Rio Rio many times over the years, but it is has been awhile after COVID etc...clearly they have changed over the years, for the worse. There was not one single thing any of of the four of us ordered that was not mediocre, at best. Charging $4 for salsa, in a city known for Tex Mex is also criminal- I know covid changed menus and pricing, but chips and salsa should be complimentary, especially when the rest of the menu prices are so inflated- they can clearly comp some salsa! The queso was expensive and so congealed, we could not even eat it. We had to leave half of it, sitting there, in a cold congealed block stuck to the bowl- $12 for a queso that we could not even eat. Even when it was warm, it was also bad, bland and flavorless. The chicken fajita nachos were a pile of chips with the same queso and mildly flavored chicken, like 0 effort nachos and also bland and not good. The enchilada was probably the best thing we got, but it was just okay. The kids drinks were $4 each, which I get, tourist town- but we had slow service so for my $4 in kids' soda, I usually prefer at least one refill of the tiny kids cup, so it is more bang for the buck. I know people don't come to the Riverwalk for the taste and quality of the food necessarily (with exceptions of course), and my expectations of Riverwalk food are usually reasonable, but this was absolutely disappointing.

Great gluten-free options! Fantastic service!

We had the Botanna fajitas for 4 and they were delicious! It was a tremendous amount to share and we all loved it. Very grateful for the wide variety of gluten-free options. Christian took great care of us. Our party of 8 was incredibly high-maintenance, and he assured us it only made him feel more helpful. :) Thank you for a wonderful meal!
