Very Good Dinner during restaurant week in Seattle

By Alec D |

We went for the last evening of restaurant week in Seattle. The antipasti was enough food for a whole meal! Really delicious! That was followed by pasta which was really tasty. And for dessert we all has the Tiramisu which was good. I need to go more often.

Can't stop thinking about that creamy polenta!

By K I |

Dined here with my husband and my son. The place is smaller and very cozy. It is beautiful and welcoming. Our waiter was very attentive, but he also gave us the time and space to enjoy or meal and a nice pace. The salads, antipasta, pizzas and of course that creamy polenta, which was one of the specials, was amazing. We finished off the meal with a shared tiramisu. It was by far the best I have ever had. It was a memorable evening and when I return to Seattle I will be back!

3 years later. Even better than before!

By Patrick S |

Wow, it took me three years to return. My dinner was even more delicious, as I enjoyed lively Saturday evening dining with two of my BF's. Rione is one of their special go-to-spots. The porchetta, and my trippa and fried risotto all were quite outstanding. My companions were thrilled at their entree choices as well. Our server was wonderful (I regret forgetting her name). She generously waived one of our corkage fees. Perhaps it was the intro to the Darioush Merlot I brought that sweetened that deal. So happy to be back. Indeed it remains a real treasure on the 15th Ave strip.

Not so impressed

By melody p |

My BFF insisted on going so she could have ox tails. Hers were about 50% fat and inedible. Our server had a limited knowledge of the menu so she couldn't really answer questions, though to her credit she was helpful to our vegetarian diner. When asked if what I ordered contained an ingredient I'm highly allergic to she never came back with an answer. Service was just slow overall, wine took a long time to arrive and it wasn't very busy at all. When the food arrived and I had to ask again for clarification about ingredients I can't eat. So, food mediocre but service needs more attention. Will not return, too many places that have it figured out already.

Great food with excellent service

By dbelay |

Had dinner at Rione and it was a great experience from the house mozzarella which I must say is the best in Seattle to the ravioli it's all delicious and the service is perfectly professional and friendly.

Great bar

By Mcfly45 |

Had dinner at their bar last weekend. The service was superb and the food excellent. Try their fig pizza. It is fantastic.

Just delicious.

By Terry H |

We ate with friends for the first time at Rione XIII and were very happy to have had such a wonderful meal. The chef sent complimentary hors d for us to share and it was so good. I had the half chicken and it was one of the best I've had in a long time. The pizzas were also very good - and generously portioned.

Very good dinner bordering on great.

By Zoomer2You |

It all started with great appetizers. The fried artichokes and tomatoes/ricotta--just wonderful. The entrees were very good and one of the dishes was great. The service was very good and attentive. The staff knew their dishes and could help make decisions. The desserts were varied and different. Loved the chocolate/peanut torte. A place to watch and go to if you are in Seattle. Great atmosphere, seating, and people watching in a cool area.

Excellent from start to finish !

By psdietc0ke |

Started with the fried artichokes & antipasto platter-delicious ! Next up, veal chop for hubby & polenta gnocchi for me. Veal chop wonderful and the non-traditional gnocchi scrumptious. Shared a nice bottle of red wine-Carpineto' 2009 with the meal and finished with their pistachio & java gelato. Would definitely return, loved the atmosphere also.

Trastevere revisited!

By makemelaugh44 |

My husband and I honeymooned in Italy and Spain last September and while in Rome, we stayed in a neighborhood called Trastevere. It was one of our favorite destinations of our entire trip so I was thrilled to accidentally find a restaurant here in Seattle with foods from Trastevere! I surprised him with a date night out to this restaurant followed by a local theater production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to The Forum - a little bit of our honeymoon revisited. I have to say that the meal we had at Rione XIII was equally delicious as anything we ate in Trastevere. The fried artichoke appetizer was delicious and the pork chop was, BY FAR, the BEST pork chop I have ever tasted in my life. Service was great, staff was friendly, and we will definitely be coming back. YUM!!

Authentic Italian cuisine in a trendy neighborhood

By Sued1000 |

Rione's is a lovely Italian trattoria-style restaurant. The maître d' is very welcoming and attentive to customers, the staff are well-trained and efficient, though you never feel rushed. Great wine selections and the food is absolutely delicious. Truly fresh and tender Italian pasta, wonderful unique salads and small plates - you must try the House Fresh Mozzarella salad with arugula, shaved fennel, crushed toasted hazelnuts in a delicate yet flavourful dressing. It's a trendy location, boistrerous with groups of 20 and 30-somethings dropping in after work. Reserve, or get there on the dot of 5 p.m.

Almost Rome

By Bill W |

Rione XIII succeeds in bringing Rome to Seattle's Capitol Hill. Our charming and knowledgeable server, Patrick, guided us to an excellent, and well priced, bottle of 2012 Occhipinti "SP68" Sicilia Rosso. The starters of Carciofi alla Giudia and Bruschetta with smoked mackerel, pickled onions and aioli were like a quick trip to Rome. We shared the Gnocchi alla Romana which was the least impressive part of our meal since it seemed just a little too dense and perhaps over cooked. Our main course was a shared Veal Sweetbreads Piccata with artichoke, capers and lemon that would make a return visit mandatory - excellent combination of tastes, textures and preparation. A shared glass of 2008 Occhipinti Passito Nero and a couple of perfect espresso ended a fine dining experience. We hope to return on our next trip to Seattle

Trastevere Roma comes to Seattle Capital Hill. That's no lie!

By Patrick S |

Great pasta, great pizza, not pricey wine-by-glass options, outstanding service. What an awesome add to the 15th Ave strip. We liked the rustic, yet cozy atmosphere. I am a demanding Italo-American diner, and a huge fan of Staple & Fancy -- so I was expecting high standards -- and they were very much met. The Bucatini was beyond heavenly.

Outstanding and great value

By John F |

My wife and I went for a casual birthday celebration with another couple. We had high expectations, but were still pleasantly surprised. The tripe was some of the best I've ever had, the pasta was cooked perfectly al dente, although the rabbit disappeared a little. The homemade mozzarella sampler was great, especially the burrata. The suppli al telefono were delicious and just the right consistency. Pizza was good, but I will go back for the tripa. We brought a bottle in from a friend's collection (corkage was a tad high!) The small-plate portions were perfectly human-sized and reasonably priced. Our waiter was very helpful, skilled and appropriately attendant to the table. We have already sent friends and family and will go back ourselves!

Love RIONE XIII

By watraveler |

Rione XIII does not disappoint! It is FABULOUS! We dine here often and love the food, atmosphere, and staff. The dish ingredients are fresh and wine choices are wonderful! We are a fan of all Ethan Stowell restaurants and I have to say Rione XIII is our favorite!!

Tasty Italian

By Problemchild2 |

Love Ethan Stowell's pasta dishes. Never disappoints with them. The pizza especially the mushroom pizza was good. Service was very prompt and friendly. Our 2 kids love his pasta dishes. We always have plenty of food to eat with leftovers.

Wanted to love it

By Colleenk8 |

I have had great experiences at other Ethan Stowell restaurants, and I was in search of Cacio e Pepe, so we decided to give Rione XIII a try. My husband has food allergies, and while we typically find restaurants to be very accommodating of this, our server wasn't very helpful. First we asked about the aioli served with the fried artichoke, and she told us there "might be some cream in it." When a different server delivered the appetizer, we asked him and he said he would check with the kitchen and within 30 seconds returned confirming that it was dairy free. This happened again when we went to order entrees; my husband was between two and asked which he could order dairy free--her response was that the lamb was fine, and there "might" be some cream in the sides of the scallops. Keep in mind, we were seated at the back of the restaurant and it is an open concept kitchen...so she could have easily checked with them to confirm. He ended up going with the lamb by default, and she asked if medium was okay, which he agreed to. My pasta was delicious, but unfortunately my husband didn't enjoy the lamb as much as it was quite undercooked--definitely was more medium rare. He should have sent it back but hates to do so, so he just picked through it instead. All in all, I wanted to love this place but was let down.

Exemplary!

By Fan-of-foreign-films |

Not only is the menu studded with adventuresome options - tripe! burrata! fried baby artichokes! - but the execution is flawless. The tripe dish will be the one I will in future measure all other tripe dishes against; it was the best I've ever had. The artichokes remindd us of a famoust tapas bar in Barcelona. The burrata and its clever presentation were amazing. Then the desserts and coffee gilded the lily. As in every good restaurant, everyone does everything. If a water glass needs to be refilled or a dirty dish removed, whoever is nearby - even the maitre d' - does it. Moreover, the company running the resto tries to pay all its staff a living wage - a rare thing in the food service industry. Bravo! At the end of our meal, we asked for 2 things - the cheque, and a reservation for dinner the following night.

Very good Italian in Seattle

By K T |

Rione XIII is one of the local celebrity chef's restaurants. It serves very good Italian food at reasonable pricing. It's a bit away from downtown, so you need to walk, take taxi/uber, if you are staying in downtown.

A wonderful neighborhood restaurant

By Becky F |

We met up with friends who had been to the restaurant before. This is a cozy neighborhood place that gives off a bit of a funky vibe which we love. Our server was terrific and guided us to both cocktail and dinner selections. We brought our own wine and corkage for the two bottles was $25 which was very reasonable. Our food was delicious. We also left with a little bag of homemade pasta for each of us. A gift for dining with them. Great evening, great food. We will be back.

Great food, great place to go with friends

By Gail K |

Another great Ethan restaurant! Visiting Seattle is LwYs interesting to see what Ethan has created! Great wine, great food! Don't miss it!

Disappointing food

By candsnz |

Despite our waiter telling us the food was authentically Roman, nothing we were served seemed particularly authentic nor particularly good. The homemade mozzarella was decidedly firm, the ragu was OK but certainly not rich and delicious as described, the carbonara had a slightly brown sauce (?), and the tiramisu was just awful - dense and fatty. Even our espresso was disappointing - slightly burnt tasting and not particularly hot. The restaurant space is comfortable and attractive, and our waiter was very pleasant, but the food just wasn't great.

Mother's Day Dinner

By Edwin L |

We went to Rione XIII recently for Mother's Day dinner with our teenage boys. The menu was excellent and there was something for everyone. The highlights were the fried artichokes, whole branzino and the veal chop! The atmosphere is casual enough for a family dinner yet intimate enough for a dinner for two. This is one of the top Ethan Stowell restaurants that we have visited.... check it out!

Wow! We could be back in Rome!

By Leslie W |

Rione XIII is meant to evoke Trastevere, and it's successful both in its cuisine and its ambience. We loved the place! Their menu, though rather small, is wonderful, with a nice selection of appetizers, pastas, and pizzas. We sampled some from each of those categories, starting with focaccia, carciofi (artichokes) alla Guidia, and shishito peppers, all of which were absolutely yummy (especially the really crispy artichokes). For our main courses spouse chose the cacio e pepe with tonnarelli, I the potato gnocchi with tomato, basil, and mozzarella, and daughter the really wonderful Hot Coppa Salami pizza. Aside from the gnocchi being a tad overcooked, everything was exceptionally well prepared and flavorful. We particularly liked the thin and blistered crust of the pizza--very reminiscent of what one encounters in Testaccio and Trastevere both. The cocktail menu is interesting, and the wine list is well chosen, even the wines by the glass. The bottled wines are listed by region, and we had a delightful Cabernet Franc from the Trentino-Alto Adige and Friuli region. Service was conscientious, and our server was charming. We'll definitely be back when next in the area.

Excellent food and lovely ambiance!

By Nathan1750 |

Rione XIII is a small classy restaurant in the lovely neighborhood of 15th Ave E on Capitol Hill of Seattle. The food is excellent (Try the Pepper Pasta!) with a great dining area, nice bar with very good cocktails, and a great wait staff. Perfect for couples or small adult groups.

A let down

By Laura M |

Wanted to love this place. I really like freshly made pasta so was looking forward to eating here. The atmosphere was great and the service was good. The quality of the food was very good. I had the pasta with toasted peppercorns and Pecorino Romano. I really like black pepper and Pecorino Romano cheese. Was really looking forward to the dish and was sadly disappointed. The pasta was well cooked al dente but the entire dish was flavorless and watery. My friend had the pasta Carbonara and it was pretty tasty but nothing fantastic. The entire dish of pasta had less than a tablespoon of bacon. Maybe the chef is a minimalist?

Excellent dinner, great atmosphere

By glacial_erratic |

We went to Rione XIII after reading reviews on Tripadvisor. We were very pleased with the recommendation! Service was very good, our server gladly explained the dishes and answered all of our questions. We shared two appetizers, the grilled summer beans (green beans and wax beans with sun-dried tomatoes and vinagrette - delicious!) and the heirloom tomatoes (very fresh but a little bland to our taste.) Our dinners were all delicious! Bucatini Amatriciana was just spicy enough to have a little kick, the Gnocchi alla Romana was tender and delicious, and the Tonnarelli Cacio e Pepe was also delicious. Prices were reasonable and portion sizes were just right - not huge and not skimpy. The wine selection was good. We will add Rione XIII to our places we want to return to on future visits!

Excellent and fun!

By jawms |

We loved this place. Think of Italian tapas. Great selection of shareable small plates, pizzas, pastas. Our waiter was knowledgable, have good recommendations, was attentive & friendly but not annoying. The food was great. We'll definitely be back.

Lovely little Italian

By Beth S |

Great food and good service. We ended up here on a night when we were both suffering from jet-lag and feeling sorry for ourselves. The food really cheered us up, and the waiting staff were helpful and polite while not asking too much of us in our slightly befuddled state.

Delicious and Fresh

By Janice234 |

We went Friday night with our two adult daughters and everyone enjoyed it. We had salad, fried artichoke , Bronzino , and fennel sausage pizza. We can recommend this place. Excellent food, wine and service.

Friendly neighborhood Italian restaurant with great food, drinks, ambience, and staff!

By Samuel T |

I went there last night to celebrate a good friend’s birthday and we both had a fantastic time that to Ellie the restaurant manager and our professional and personable waitperson Andrew. This is my go to restaurant when I want to dine out alone or with friends because of the food, ambience, and staff. I’ll be back soon!

First time Fantastic

By kateoste |

My husband and I went to Rione XIII twice during our week in Seattle. We went back the second time based on our experience the first time. The first time we went we were lucky enough to have a table outside, the food was fantastic and our server was great. The second time we went there was only one table available. Well, actually there were 3 tables available but we were told that the other two were reserved and basically we could take the table we were being offered or leave. The host was a little bit rude about it. For the record neither of the tables had reserved signs on them, so I'm not sure how we were supposed to know. And we were there for about an hour and a half and the one reservation didn't show up until minutes before we left, and plenty of tables had turned over the in the time we were there. Anyway, our server was good and the good was excellent again. But it's quite loud and crowded inside the restaurant so it just wasn't quite the nice experience we had on our first visit. I would certainly recommend this restaurant, but I would say you should call ahead and request a table!

Happy Hour Treats

By Sarah B |

Five friends and I arrived unfashionably early to do a tasting of the happy hour menu. We had pizza, the best mozzarella I've ever tasted (and I've been to Italy three times) and fried gnocchi and focaccia bread. The red wine on the happy hour menu was excellent. I don't think you can miss with this restaurant.

Pretty good, not great

By Bob C |

I had dinner here recently with my sister....we shared dishes of fried artichokes (small portion), fried risotto balls with a tasty tomato sauce, a delicious agnolotti pasta, and a sweetbreads entree. All were fine, if not spectacular. The service was very competent and friendly, and the ambiance was just ok. Prices are moderate, except for the wines by the glass which are overpriced, just like everywhere else. When did ordinary wine get to $10-$15 a glass? Ripoff, I would say.

Expensive for what you get with what turns out to be an irritating 22% service charge

By Fiddler1068 |

We'd been here once before and thought it was OK but not great, and wanted to have a casual dinner out tonight, so tried it again. I don't think we'll be back - it's really not good value for money. The food was all right, but not outstanding and it was a week night, not very busy, not crowded, fairly noisy but they were willing to turn the music down a bit, but it's just not all that great. I wish they wouldn't make the 20% service charge sound so precious on their menu - and then they charge tax on it as well, which really makes it 22%. I find this excessive for adequate but not outstanding service. When we questioned the tax on it our server said it was state law - I really question this, but do not know. However I think most restaurants which are now levying a mandatory service charge don't add tax to it. All in all, $115.00 for a plate of pasta, a smallish serving of cod, and a medium bottle of rose wine seems a bit too steep. It's a lot for a dinner on a night when you're tired and don't want to cook, yet it's not really good enough to warrant a special night out. It's so close and convenient - I just wish it were both better and better value.

Italian Restaurant in a nice neighborhood

By Destin000 |

This is a reasonably small, neighborhood restaurant, with a good Italian menu. No simple spaghetti here; Italian dishes with some exotics like oxtail, and some normal seafood items too. Loved the atmosphere with the windows open, and the tall ceilings. The bar was nice, and the prices for wine reasonable. Not my best meal ever, but well done. Patrick did a phenomenal job; would recommend him.

Absolutely Delicious, Gluten-Free Options, & Excellent Service

By T Casey |

We were visiting Seattle and the Bed & Breakfast we stayed at highly recommended this restaurant, which we can now see why they did. The ambiance makes for a cozy and welcoming experience. One of us is allergic to gluten and the staff was very educated on this and took note throughout the meal to point out options that could be offered gluten-free. Excellent service! The restaurant adheres to COVID-19 policies, masks required as well as proof of vaccination, so a very safe place to dine. Our meal was absolutely delicious and their drink selections are great. Whenever we are back in Seattle, we will definitely dine here again.

Delicious!!

Went here for Seattle restaurant week and it did not disappoint! Take out was quick and easy and everyone was super friendly and helpful. Everything we tried was delicious and fresh. Would recommend!

Relax on a Summer Night

By Werner L |

We dropped by late, and had a snack and a glass of wine at at table on the sidewalk. A very friendly, relaxed place to hang.... What I really like is that there's a service-charge-instead-of-tipping policy--much easier, and fairer, too.

Fabulous Evening

By LoriRNYC |

Enjoyed a terrific dinner with family who live in Seattle. Great ambience--the room is architecturally interesting, lively, and relaxed. Our server was professional and attentive. We had several starters, including the antipasti and carciofi followed by two pastas and a veal chop. The excellent and well priced wine list made it tough to choose because they all seemed great. The pizzas looked delicious--all in all, we had a fun, memorable night.

Newest Ethan Stowell Italian Eatery in Cap Hill a winner!

By Joemarie |

This new Ethan Stowell Italian (Rome inspired menu) restaurant opened just a couple of months ago. We decided to celebrate a friend's B-Day here. We visited on a Sunday, without reservations, which happened to be a bad idea as all tables were spoken for!... however, they do offer a full menu at the bar and we were lucky to find 2 spots there. The bartender was helpful, handsome and always available for questions about drink selections and menu items. We enjoyed our corner location as we were fascinated by the aromas from the meals being served to other patrons around us. We had fun asking the bartender to described each plate that walked by us. Overall, great menu, with ample selections of pastas, pizzas, small plates and larger meals. After a fantastic meal, the bartender served my friend a delicious dessert with a birthday candle on the house! With all the celebration and merriment, we forgot our shopping bag on the floor. We drove back and all of the items were safely guarded by the staff...

Best Seattle dining experience

By Caroline H |

This place is an absolute must if you enjoy fine food, wine and a good dose of local atmosphere. We were recommended to try this place by a local and we enjoyed a sensational night. The food was delicious, the staff were fun and entertaining and the place was pumping with atmosphere. We had no reservations but were happy to grab a seat at the bar. Sensational find.

Brought back childhood memories!

By Lina M |

The braised oxtail served over polenta with red sauce brought me right back to my grandmother's kitchen. Fried artichokes, superb, as were the pastas; Tonnarelli Carbonara and Campanelle with rapine and sausage. You just can't go wrong here and the service is terrific. Just go!

Excellent Dinner

By HappyTravelerSanJose |

We ate dinner here in June. We split a salad, and then they gave us a complementary antipasto platter because they thought the service was too slow. We both had wonderful simple pasta dishes which looked to be on the small size, but were plenty and we split a dessert. The service was also quite good. Our only complaint is that it is a bit on the noisy side, but worth it for the food and wine.

Good Italian on capital hill

By K T |

Visited Rione VIII for dinner in June 2018. This is one of Ethan Stowell restaurants and this one is my favorite. Casual Italian food in casual capital hill neighborhood. Parking on the street is not too difficult to find. Good drink options are available. We had salad, buratta, wild mushroom pizza, and vegetarian linguine. All were good.

Great Food and Atmosphere

By jeff5327 |

We had a fantastic dinner at Rione XIII. It has an assorted Italian menu and the atmosphere was warm and inviting with Seattle touches: big windows and just the right amount of urban modern. Waitstaff was friendly but very professional. Everything was perfect. Highly recommended.

This place never disappoints

By SherryLH2012 |

The only challenge is getting a table, because the neighborhood supports Rione in a big way! Any day of the week, it will be full and energetic from opening to close. The food is honest, flavorful, the atmosphere fun (if at times a bit loud & rambunctious!), the service impeccable. The servers know their stuff and can suggest great wines to compliment the rustic Italian fare. In a nutshell, it's just the perfect neighborhood gem, but - hey - we welcome outsiders, too!

Amazing traditional Italian

By MJ115 |

Beautiful ambience - high ceilings but still cozy. Great service. Amazing food. We had the burrata, the carbonara and the amatriciana. Each was just wonderful, and the portions were large enough that we brought some home. And the dessert! Our waiter recommended the tart with ice cream- it was fabulous and enough for the two of us (although so good that you will want to get one for yourself).

Restaurant week special

By Pam T |

We were at Rione XIII during Seattle restaurant week and took advantage of the special, which offered a choice of appetizer, entree, and dessert. Everything was fantastic and the prices were very reasonable for the quality and quantity of food. Would definitely go back

Good food and atmosphere

By JohnMaMercer |

We have a group of 12 for dinner and have a wonderful time. Food and wine is good. A good menu and service is exceptional.

Good, not great.

By Bob J |

Met a friend for dinner and a drink last night. Bar service gets a ‘10.’ The meal that followed was OK. I ordered Bucatini all’ Amatriciana. This classic Roman dish is made with just a few ingredients, guanciale (pig’s cheek), onions, tomatoes and pepperoncini. When properly prepared, it is a great dish. What was served was greasy and warm, not hot. Maybe I caught them on a bad night.

Among the best Italian options in Seattle

By rsilverst |

Ethan Stowell did a great job with this restaurant. It may be true that I'd expect the best Italian food to come from a place owned by someone named Maria or Luigi, rather than Ethan, but it is what it is. Good atmosphere, incredibly friendly staff, and really amazing pasta dishes. I like the Bucatini all'Amatriciana. Fantastic noodles, great sauce, spicy. You really can't go wrong here. Though, unfortunately, that dish is so good, it's the only one I have tried, and I keep ordering the same thing! The other dishes I've seen ordered at my table have also been great.

Great atmosphere and food

By Lori M |

We had dinner at Rione on a Friday night before attending a show. The atmosphere was great and the service was excellent as well. We enjoyed the Burrata cheese appetizer as a starter, followed by the blood orange salad. We opted to share the entrees as we couldn't decide between the pizza and pastas. Everything was flavorful and the perfect size for sharing. The wine menu was great with plenty of selections and price points. This is a great restaurant and we look forward to coming back.

Great

By Carrie C |

I had the a pasta dish with octopus. Yummy. Great atmosphere, great friendly staff and reasonably priced. Would defiantly go again, and excellent wine list . Kitchen is open and exposed so you can see how fresh everything is made

Tasty salads and fabulous wait staff

By Ruth N |

My husband and I were looking for a casual and tasty dinning experience. We found it at Rione XIII. Our salad (tomato heirloom) was so fresh and a delightful culinary treat. My husband had the chicken which he loved. I had the fish special- a little too salty for my taste buds. We ended it with Tiramisu!!! However, the highlight for us was the waitress-she was so kind to deal with my food sensitivities. She checked on us frequently and celebrated a birthday at the table next to us with class. Going back.

who's in charge here?

By ph00tl00se |

Just returned home from our fifth or sixth visit, profoundly disappointed by the food and the attitude of the host (not the server, she was great). The featured appetizer of cold leek and potato soup was great, but the accompanying single slice of toast smeared with pesto was burned on all edges, and clearly should have been redone. The baby artichokes in the appetizer were dry and tough, in contrast to our visit a few weeks ago when they were juicy and well-cooked. Were they old? Out of season? In any case they should not have been on the menu. We usually love spicy food, and the cheese ravioli with corn and hot peppers might have been fabulous, but the hot pepper was overdone so that it dominated all other tastes, possibly in a failed attempt to give a nod to the southwest. The squid with squid ink pasta could also have been fabulous, and was on our previous visit, but it too was drowned by hot pepper. When we told the host that both pastas were overspiced, he brushed us off with "thank you, I'll communicate that with the kitchen", and walked off. I expect a more concerned response from a restaurant with a fixed 18% service charge. The restaurant was not crowded for 8 pm on a Thursday. I understand why. Will we be back? We will encourage friends to eat there? Not likely.

Excellent experience

By Tennisnut144 |

At the suggestion of my son and daughter in law we spent a very enjoyable happy hour plus at this fine establishment The food and presentation was superb however the service was surprisingly just passable. The value and food quality more than compensated for the surprisingly questionable service. Everyone has a day that they would rather be somewhere else ........maybe yesterday was her day. I would definitely try this spot again

Just walked in .. glad we did

By Boxer4 |

In Seattle for one night only as part of a 2 week road trip. Stayed in Capitol Hill at a B&B. Went out for a walk on 15th Ave. No real idea of what we were looking for food-wise. Came upon Rione XIII ... walked in and were seated right away. I usually don't like the 2 top tables all in a row which is what we were seated at ... but it was okay somehow in this instance. Our server was a nice young guy ... helpful and friendly. The overall atmosphere in the restaurant was welcoming and warm. My husband and I shared the arrancini (or Suppli as they call them here)(loved them), and we also shared the special pasta of the day ... so glad the waiter told us that most pastas are definitely for sharing as it was the perfect amount ... especially as it allowed us to leave enough room for a yummy chocolate dessert and a really good espresso. Would definitely return.

A bit pricey but the carbonara is to die for

By yourguardianangle |

While Rione XIII can get pricey if you go with big eaters, the pasta dishes are phenomal. In particular, I've found the carbonara to be exceptional. I'm not sure what they top it with (seems like some sort of seasoned heavenly egg thing), but it's the best carbonara that I've found in Seattle. Also, the raviolo dish is phenomenal but on the small side. This place is definitely good for happy hour or dinner with the ladies.

recent happy hour and dinner

By lastres0rt |

we met some friends here for happy hour and dinner and the food and wine was superb, some of the best food we have experienced. The service was prompt and friendly and it was a wonderful visit as well, pleasant ambiance, don't miss trying the food here.

Excellent service and tasty food

By dkFiona |

Ok. Don't get your hopes up about the insalata mista. But everything else was good. The salad was just, well, boring. Plain lettuce leaves with raspberry vinaigrette...boring and kind of bitter too. The bread is also on the boring side. But the polenta gnocci, while you may not be able to readily find it in Italy, was still very tasty. I would have called it baked polenta, since it's in cubes and looks like it was pretty much baked. The prosciutto pizza was also good, though as my fiance noted, you don't ever find prosciutto in Italy without mushrooms (funghi)...since I don't eat meat, I can't comment on that. Still he said it was good. I also had a glass of white wine from the Abruzzo region, which was affordable and good. And, the dessert was wonderful: pistachio canoli. The pistachio gelato was definitely the high point of the dessert...the pistachio ricotta being a bit bland...I think plain ricotta is better inside of canoli. Still, it's something not to miss if you like pistachio. Our waiter was very attentive without being annoying. He was responsive to each of my requests and always seemed to be available when we needed something, despite being busy. I wasn't sure about the loud music at first, but since it was mostly 80's rock, I ended up tapping my foot to a lot of it, as it is not music I hear very often. We sat near the windows on the street as it was warm. That gave a wonderful feel to the place.

A lot of buzz, a lot of noise and adequate food

By shri420 |

The title says it all. After hearing unending praise for Rione XIII, we joined another couple for dinner with great anticipation. The menu looks interesting and features some favorites from visits to Rome. The first thing that we encountered was when we entered--the room is very very noisy. Through the evening we had great difficulty engaging in conversation with our friends. We also had difficulty in some verbal exchanges with our server--who otherwise was very attentive and accommodating. The menu offers a variety of options includes antipasti, small plates--which in another house might be called appetizers; that is, the offerings are not smaller versions of what might pass as an entree, but rather include salad, grilled breads, focaccia etc. The two notable small plates choices are Carciofi alla Giudia (small fried artichokes) or Suppli al Telefono (fried risotto balls in a meat/tomato sauce that seems to be a "take" on arancini.) Both were sampled and the suppli was found to be an interesting variation on the more familiar Sicilian specialty. On the other hand, the carciofi were very salty and we felt the dominant element was the fried coating. The next menu section was Pasta and there are some interesting choices including a pasta carbonara which was bigger than it was good--the flavors were very muted. The pasta itself was fine. Our party also sampled the Gnocchi alla Romana which were pronounced "adequate". We did not sample the "Roman Street Pizza" section which included combinations that we had never encountered anywhere in Italy, much the less in Trastevere, Rome. Oh well. The large plate options were varied--our party tried the oxtails with polenta which was flavorful, but oxtails are not always meaty and ours were not--just not memorable in a good way. Another large plate choice was sea scallops which were accompanied by small squash and sunchokes, The searing of the scallops had been rather nominal and one guest felt that in avoiding overcooking the dish, the kitchen had undercooked it instead. The wine list was pretty much dominated by Italian styles which covered a number of choices. We thought the pricing was fair, but on the high side when it came to some more pedestrian varieties. So, in summary--if you think that you're not enjoying dinner unless you and all around you are having a fine time evidenced by loud speech, Rione XIII would be a choice. But the cuisine, while interesting, would not make this a destination restaurant. Oh, by the way, if you decide it is, go early because parking in that neighborhood is challenging.

Nice local style restaurant in Cap Hill

By Joe M |

Enjoyed a nice dinner on a weekday night (around 7:00pm). The atmosphere is great with large open seating area with high ceilings. Never felt cramped or too close to the next table. Service was good; relaxed and with a smile. We were a table of 3 and ordered the heirloom tomatoes to start. Overall, just OK on this appetizer. There were more melon pieces than there were tomatoes and the pieces that we received were not very sweet and quite hard. We had a fennel sausage pizza to share which was great. Crust was crispy and tasty. We also had two pastas. The carbonara and another (I forgot the name). The carbonara was quite nice. However, the volume was just way too much for one person to eat... If you are not a huge eater, I would split a pasta dish. No room for desserts. Best to make reservations as we saw a few people turned away. But some made it in so it looks hit or miss if you dont have a reservation. Service charge is automatically added to the bill so be careful not to "double tip".

corporate chain, corporate food, corporate service.

By highstandards00 |

Some restaurants run on steam, this one runs on hot air--I.e. the reputation of Stowell. He has become a big corporate chain and the mediocre food and how guests are treated show it. Food: the soup: way over salted--the cheap way to season. fried artichoke: small pieces of artichoke in a boring and everyday aoli. pasta: tasteless Treatment of guests: Stowell adds 20% service charge and the lack of enthusiasm shows it. in addition he charges tax on the service charge making it 22%. disrespect for the handicapped: my guest has a hearing disapbility. When I made the res I told them about it. When we came into the restaurant we asked the person seating us [likely the mgr] if he could turn down the loud music. He did nothing. We asked the server and if it was turned down it was very minor reduction in noise. Further showing that Stowell has gone corporate and looks to pinch pennies, the speakers were cheap and distorted the sound significantly. Nothing more fun that sitting down to a most mediocre meal, not getting really good service, paying 22% for service, then having to have ones hearing senses bombarded by distorted music.

Great Italian restaurant

It was an amazing dinner. We were 12 and we were delivered food. Pizza were succulent with crisp and thin crust. Other dishes were also made with great fresh and tasty ingredients. The recipes were un commun It was a very enjoyable Moment

Friendly neighborhood restaurant

Buffalo mozzarella is VERY GOOD, creamy and fresh! This restaurant is more casual but definitely good place for dates or just hanging out with friends. Pizza was delicious! Would definitely go back to try more things!

Neighborhood Addition

This relatively new addition to the Capitol Hill dining scene has a varied Italian menu and decent wine list.We have been in twice for dinner. The first time the service was so-so, last week is was very good.

This Restaurant Has Potential

By james S |

This restaurant has potential. We went here on a Sunday night. We tried to get an early reservation but they were full but we were able to get a reservation at 7:30pm. We got a great table near the window. We ordered focaccia. It was outstanding. We also ordered a fried artichoke appetizer but it tasted gummy. Rione serves a flour gnocchi which is very hard to find. I once had an outstanding flour gnocchi in Venice, Italy but I haven’t found it since Rione. The Rione version was baked with cheese. Not as good as the one in Venice but it has potential as the other dishes served to us that evening had similar potential.

Amazing !

By psdietc0ke |

This is one of our favorite restaurants downtown! So glad it survived Covid !!! We started with a bottle of Mark Ryan & appetizers (Salumi Board, Torta Fritta & Marinated Olives) Entrees were Casio e Pepe (the best in Seattle) & Gnocchi, both were delicious. Our server Jack was attentive & personable, food wonderful. We will definitely be back !

Fine for casual dining

By FoodFan1966 |

Perhaps my expectations were too high. Perhaps the kitchen was a little off. Either way, I didn't feel the meal lived up to the hype. My husband had the oxtails over polenta. The oxtails were deliciously tender, falling off the bone. The polenta was oversalted, almost to the point of being inedible. The bucatini was perfectly al dente, but the sauce lacked the depth of flavor I was hoping for. The fried artichokes that reviewers had raved about were overcooked, but the burrata was marvelous. So, a lot of good points, a lot of areas that could have been better. The decor was great, nice atmosphere, good service.

Love this place!

By rsilvers |

Have been back numerous times (most recently Nov 2017). Both food AND cocktails are made with care and great, fresh ingredients.

didn't match the hype

By Rob & Gaia |

My wife and I ate here on January 24th., and if you go by previous reviews they were obviously having an off night. I had the Oxtails ala Vaccinara and my wife had the Veal Chop Saltimbocca. The presentation on both dishes left much to be desired. More thrown on the plate than presented in any appetizing fashion. Presentation aside, the oxtails were tasty enough to be an adequate Tuesday evening dinner at home while the veal was just plain bad. We should have clued in when the waiter brought a 8" steak knife to attack the beast - It was insanely salty and tougher than shoe soles. In a city of so many great restaurants, I'm sorry to say we won't return to this one.

Favourite Meal in Seattle

By NRiopel |

My husband and I recently spent 4 days on a getaway in Seattle. This was our favourite place to eat the whole time. The service was great and the food was fantastic. I had the nettle agnolotti and he had the carbonara. Both were prepared perfectly.

Excellent and reasonable

By sjgjess1 |

We came here by chance. It was on our radar because we had read about the homemade mozzarella, but we had actually planned to eat at List. However, a lengthy wait, coupled with an easy reservation on OpenTable made up our minds for us. What a push in the right direction! The salads are big enough to share, and they're great. My parents shared the mixed salad, and my husband and I went for the grilled asparagus with poached egg (amazing). Then, we all shared a burrata, which was an in-house masterpiece -- a little firmer on the outside than the ultra-soft varieties we've had in the past. It was incredible. Next, my dad and husband went in for pizzas -- which are enormous. They're rectangular, FYI. I ordered two side veggies because I just couldn't bear to eat a full dinner on my own, and I munched on their crusts. My mom had the chicken cacciatore, and I think it was great because she didn't offer it to anyone else. The wine was a value and delicious, as well. Overall, a memorable, wonderful meal.

It was fine - not bad, just not memorable

By chamdexor |

We showed up pretty late, but just wanted to grab food and go which worked well for both us and the staff because they didn't really want us there (even though we arrived about 40 minutes before closing). But the waitress made it clear that we couldn't stay long which was fine with us. Overall it was okay. The cacio y pepe (3 of us ordered that) was SUPER pepper-y. The pizza looked good, but I didn't order it. I'd say if you just want a some meal with an Italian flare and you're in the area, this will work.

So-so food, slow service

By NinaV8 |

I started this review a few weeks ago. I didn't finish it because I don't like to give negative reviews. In this case, I might have been willing to say it was an off night, except I found out afterward that my companions were already giving it a second chance. We came in late in the evening and the restaurant was about three-quarters filled. The ambiance is lovely and the wait was reasonable. However, the food was so-so and the service likewise. After we were seated, one of my companions asked for a couple of minutes to study the wine list. Those few minutes turned into nearly 15 minutes before the waiter returned for our order. When my soup finally came, it arrived without a spoon (another waiter noticed and provided it). Be aware that like all Ethan Stowell restaurants, it charges a 20% surcharge. There are other restaurants in the chain where I don't mind the charge. This isn't one of them.

Another great Ethan Stoll restaurant

Great menu, good wine list, fair value, knowledgable help, comfortable setting. We would go back - again and again. What more can i say?

Rome in Seattle!

By Al O |

For a taste of Trastevere while in Seattle, go to Rione XIII. The food was excellent! From the carciofi, to suppli, to cacio e pepe and amatriciana you would believe you are in Rome. While not easy to get to, it's worth the effort as the prices are very reasonable and the food excellent! Pacing of the meal was well timed and the staff attentive but not overbearing.

Dishonest prices on menu

By Matt G |

Good food, but BEWARE DISHONEST PRICING with a junk service charge. The prices on the menu lie to the diner.

Delish!

By FidelmaMcMorrow |

Had a spectacular dinner here. We had the burrata and heirloom tomatoes to start and then I had the carbonara. Wow...delicious. I loved the space too...especially the chandelier.

Dissapointed

By Linda P |

We were all excited for this dinner out in Seattle. It was a Saturday night and we have reservations that we made well in advance. We were seated at a lovely table and had a very sweet and experienced server. She really tried to make us happy, but the pasta just wasn't good. It was chewy and so salty we couldn't barely eat it. The one thing we loved was the buratta which was served with shaved peaches. Yum This just didn't measure up to the experience that we've had at other Ethan Stowell restaurants. The spices were heavy handed and pasta was undercooked. We won't be going back to Rione... 😪

Molto bene!

By Sarah V |

My husband, mother-in-law, and I had dinner at Rione XIII on a recent trip to Seattle and can't wait to go back. The service was excellent, the ambience was cozy yet modern, and the food was great. My husband and I went to Rome for our honeymoon this summer, so we were excited to see how Rione XIII compared to the food we ate in Italy. I am happy to report that the menu was very reminiscent of our trip! We had the house antipasti (olives, marinated squash, proscuitto, porchetta, and pickled artichokes), tonnarelli cacio e pepe, gnocchi alla Romana, the grilled leg of lamb, and the oxtail. The antipasti was delicious, the gnocchi were some of the best I've had, and the oxtail was sinfully good. The leg of lamb was good as well, but the gnocchi and the oxtail were my favorites. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is that the cacio e pepe needs just a few tweaks. That said, it was a great dinner and I'm looking forward to our next visit.

Very Good but expensive

By Martin |

We eat with some colleagues at the rione XIII. On the menu we some funny stuff like beef tong and pig ears but also more normal food. As appetizer we eat home made mozzarella and grilled artichoke. The last one had an amazing taste. For main course I chose the Bucatini all'Amatriciana. A little spice spaghetti. At first it seemed to little but eventually the portion was perfect. Others had salmon and had to little food as main dish. As summary the restaurants food is amazing, but also so is the price.

unusual Italian Food

By Allen L |

Small and large plates of very unusual preparations. No need for specials, as everything was. The excellent mozzarella is served with great veggies and bread. Gnocchi is outstanding. Service was perfect. Many wines and beers from which to choose. We added a fourth portion to a couple of items, as the servings were designed for only three. Don't expect ordinary pizza toppings. We sat for more than 2 and 1/2 hours, and could have stayed longer. In the Hill neighborhood.

Eclectic dining experience

By 12318 |

Away from the tourist areas, we discovered this wonderful eatery. We arrived at happy hour and feasted on a variety of their small plate offerings. The fried artichokes were so yummy we ordered 2 more plates . The pizza was perfect . We sipped on wines and chatted .

Classy and understated!!

By barnange |

We sat at the bar where the bartender was friendly and helpful. We ordered the pasta with peppercorns and Romano cheese and tripe. Both were excellent. The happy hour portion of pasta was a full size. We were visiting from East Coast and definitely recommend. The decor was casual elegance!!

Are they taping a sitcom and nobody told me?

By Meshugah |

Food yummy. Service better than standard. Dessert sublime. But after three visits I can safely conclude that this restaurant has the largest concentration of men and women braying fake forced laughter in what seems like an attempt to draw attention to themselves and thegrand time they are having. It is uncanny. As though the studio audience has been told to laugh as loud as they can. Never mind that the blind date was the least unfunny guy on earth and as soon as he left the table next to ours, his dates face fell to the floor, exhausted from effort. I've seen this odd behavior on three different visits-from diners most likely not from the neighborhood. It's too bad because I loved the food. But rather than hear this sorry display of unbridled false joi de vivre for a possible fourth time I think I'll go elsewhere.

Very Good Italian Food in Seattle

By Alec D |

The location is easy to find. Although you might have to search a bit for free street parking. The food was very good. I had the gnocchi alla Roma, which was delicious. We shared a nice bottle of red wine. The service was good.

Reliably delicious!

By jtfman |

We have been here many times, and our most recent visit was typical. Really enjoyed the pastas, and the fried artchokes are NOT to be missed. Great cocktails and nice wine selection. Service was attentive. Highly recommended!

Best Italian I have had since Rome

By Tigers8932 |

Menu was fantastic. Pasta dishes such as Cacio E Pepe that are not often seen on Italian menus in the US. Arancini was very good. Service was excellent. Make reservations because this is a very popular place. A must for Italian food lovers

Excellent Italian, comfortable-informal restaurant with very good service.

By paul m |

Very good menus, reasonably priced and very nice and competent waiter. For the 3 of us, we had 2 small plates, one pizza and two paste dishes which we all shared. With corkage fee, bill before tip was $110. Excellent value and food was excellent. Would clearly go again when in Seattle.

Outstanding Service and Delicious Food

By grk1123 |

I can't say enough about the great service we received from Brendon. He was very professional, and knowledgeable about the menu. The food was delicious. I had the oxtails, and it just melted in my mouth. The Branzino was amazing. Cooked and seasoned perfectly. It reminded me of fish I've had in Greece and Southern Italy. We will definitely be back.
