Only Pollo a la Brasa place around!

By Garrett S |

My family of six stopped by Rocoto's for dinner the other afternoon, and got unexpectedly pleasant South American food. That's not common in a town known for Tex-Mex and steakhouses. Try the pollo a la brass with an Incan soda for a tasty first impression.

Pleasantly Surprised!

By Houston C |

Went to Rocoto's for lunch with a co-worker, and I was pleasantly surprised. The restaurant is located in a strip mall so I was under the impression that it was going to be more "fast food" than gourmet. The place was very clean and the food was excellent. Had the "pollo en salsa rojo" and it was delicious. Comes with your choice of rice and a salad. Not a lot of food but, it was enough for the price. Very Good!

Big disappointment! They were out of several dishes we ordered but didn'

By KellyinHouston |

My friend and I were visiting from out of town and had found this when looking up places near where we were staying. I lived in Peru one summer, so we thought it would be fun to try. They completely forgot to bring the cebiche. They were out of several dishes we ordered, but didn't tell us until about 10-15 minutes after we ordered. The food was not spectacular - just okay. We got our drinks after we finished our meal, at which point we weren't that interested. The wine was awful. Service was very slow, although everyone was pleasant.

Blue Plate Award Winner

By meintexas67 |

I have been eating at Rocoto's for a few years and the food has always been delicious. The staff is very friendly and I am happy to say that they just won the News 4 SA Kitchen Cop Blue Plate Award. Instead of soda, try one of their fresh drinks, they are sooooo tasty.

Great Peruvian food

Remember Peru!

By FredV1088 |

An excellent restaurant serving Peruvian dishes as authentic as you can get. We worked in Peru for 5 years, and this place enables us to remember the wonderful food. I highly recommend it!!!!

Different and very good Peruvian food

By XenonNewton |

I went with a group from the retirement community where I'm now living. A couple of the group had been to Peru in the past, but it was new for most of us. The restaurant is small, but very clean. Quite noisy because of the high ceilings which did not have baffles, but that was the only downside. The server was very enthusiastic about explaining the food and making recommendations. There's a lot to choose from, and everyone enjoyed their selections very much.

Great Food and Service

Visited the restaurant for first time with Urban Delight deal and will return many times with friends. The Peruvian food was great and the service, compliments of "Edgar", was outstanding. He took the time to explain the menu items and made great suggestions. Great Work!!

A trip to the mountains

By Tuomas H |

This was my first time at a Peruvian restaurant and I am really glad we went! The food was insanely good and fresh. Service was really good too. Two lunches with real drinks cost us about $24 with tips so this is a very affordable place. Remember, no fast food here! Everything is prepared from fresh ingredients. No need to drink soda here as they have a selection of juices squeezed from REAL fruit and also a selection of imported drinks. This is what the US needs. Real food and good service! Skip the chains, support the locals. And yes, I'm going back when I come to San Antonio again.

Something a Little Different

By Ash-a-lee55 |

If you're looking for a different experience, go here! The food was excellent! We tried many different dishes and liked them all. The waitress was very patient with us, explaining every dish we asked about. You've got to try the special green rice, which is made with cilantro and spinach. The prices are decent as well. I'll definitely be going back here!

Delicious!

By Tia J |

This is off the “tourist” path but it was near our hotel. They specialize in Peruvian food NOT MEXICAN food. We asked for recommendations from the waiter and he steered us clear of the fajitas and recommended their signature chicken plate and steak dish. It was so good! We also tried a Peruvian beer. Yummy!

Great option to something different.

By sergiorms |

We shared a bistec a lo pobre, it was delicious, in our case there was enough food for both, the pisco was also very good but could be a little bit bigger. Service was great, restaurant was very clean.

Very good Peruvian food!

By Angelicalisima |

Highly recommend this restaurant. Food is delicious. A little bit pricey but they do have really good lunch deals from 11-3. Food is worth every cent you spend. Friendly staff.

out of the way discovery

Went to this restaurant for a change of pace and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of food being served it was very tasty. That being said my wife's plate arrived after we had been there 20 minutes and 10 minutes later my plate showed up, so bring a book or call ahead because they are not in any rush.

Went back again, on a Sunday after church with a big group and it was still excellent!

Great Ceviche!

Authentic Peruvian! Be sure to order the fish ceviche! We've been here several times, never disappointed!

Different but not too strange

By hidey-holer |

We were looking for a local restaurant near our hotel (Sea World) and this was a great find. Small, family-owned cafe with Peruvian and Spanish cuisine. Just different enough to be memorable, and nothing like Tex-Mex or Mexican food. The house speciality of chicken was okay but not too imaginative. Two of us had the Cebiche Pescado and loved it -- but enormous portions. Is that a bad thing? We liked all the desserts, too. Great friendly service and a varied menu with something for everyone, and quite inexpensive.

Tasty Peruvian Dishes

By ewebber0808 |

My first experience with Peruvian cuisine. Delicious menu with lots of options. The steak saltado is delicious. Our server was very helpful and explained the dishes to us. Good prices on entrees, with a large range of appetizers and desserts as well. Will definitely return!

Always delicious and friendly!

The family meal is great! Whole roasted chicken, salad, fries, and a soda Monday thru Thursday! It's a restaurant that is a regular in my home! Lots of food that leaves you satisfied! Have to try the sauces!!

Great Food!

By 82dianac |

This has become our Sunday lunch place even though they open at noon. Delicious!! Their white fish ceviche is to die for! So yummy - its very South American style. The rotisserie chicken - that's my go to dish, switch it out for the green rice (its got cilantro in it) and put some black beans on that. Try the chicken with the green salsa...OMG.....ask for maduros (ripe plantains) but be sure to tell them to get the ripest they have in the back. Oh and don't forget to try the Lucama - its an ice cream that's really delish. Like I said...its become our Sunday spot.

I Love it

By BVS29 |

I was looking for a tasty rotisserie chicken (similar to what I used to get back home) and I ran a researched for the best chicken in SA & this restaurant came up. Went that same afternoon with my husband to give it a try. The chicken fell of the bone and it was tasty, white rice was good, black beans delicious. Wanted to have tostones with my meal but they came when I was half way through my meal so I have learned to ask up front for the tostones (or amarillos) with the meal. The natural juices are out of this world. I've had the parcha and the pineapple, delicious. Tried the churro for dessert but did not like it. I have been 4 more times after that. I have had the cilantro (green) rice very tasty, the amarillos (fried sweet plantains) and the creme brulee (very good). People at the table had all sorts of different things, from Bistec a lo pobre to ceviche de pezcado and everyone loved what they had. Absolutely recommend it.

Loved it!

By George D V |

Thank you, Chris! You are awesome! Our service was exceptional! Our appetizers and entrees were exceptional! We were too full for deserts so we are going back just to try them - all made in house! Great location on the beach at access #1. Best food we've had in our 6 weeks on SPI.

ATTEMPT OF PERUVIAN FOOD

By Katr F |

An interesting experience. An attempt to make peruvian cuisine. Nice try, but it is better to look for ways to improve quality. My 11 yr old daughter was making suggestions of how to make it taste better.

AMAZING EVERYTHING! Peruvian, not Mexican - ONE of a KIND Place!

By mkh143ek7 |

My husband and I wanted something different from the usual and so we stopped in here after a quick search online. ALL the ratings/reviews were excellent and now we have one to add to it! This place has great FOOD! The portions are large and the quality is consistent - GREAT - for every dish we had. We had the pork tamale appetizer along with the Shrimp Ceviche - Delicious!!!! The ceviche was made with whole shrimp. It's served with choclo or as we here in the states call it, hominy, and with sweet potato. It's so good! Also, we ordered the Shrimp Saltado and Escabeche de Pescado or Fish dish. The flavor was outstanding on both dishes! We cannot wait to go back. The price is mid range and well worth the portions and quality received. The service Lexie and the others provided was also top notch! Thank YOU! This place is a great find!

Don’t go

By gregory c |

Food Is good But not always consistent and service off and on but attitude is what made me post this after three times of trying to tell manager about service and mainly attitude of gabby the front order person as you come in. I called and was told management was in but got put on hold without answering, I call back and was then lied to that manager wasn’t in. Anyhow, I tried three time before I wrote this and now they lost two families not to mention probably forty other friends that we almost told to go. Attitude will always destroy this. Ugh. The problem was simple but gabby did not take servant leadership on the problem and made excuses rather than fix it. I had asked for free dessert or discount for issues next time but she just said she would give me more salsa next time which I don’t need more and to drive thirty minutes to get that was the issue. She didn’t care and it was evident on not getting me to manager or her lying to me which in my opinion is she doesn’t care about customers issues and from what I read on reviews, this isn’t first time. She needs to be fired! I don’t think management cares based on other reviews I saw so the management will probably hire the same philosophy type people and thus people like the one I’m complaining about are hired. The food this time also was not as good as last time as mentioned service and quality not the same but attitude is what ‘‘tis is mainly about. Anyhow too late, I’m passing the word to never go again. Unfortunately I’m the wrong person to have attitude with as I know a lot of foodies The first time I had issues and now this attitude issue is where I draw the line. No one, no matter how good something is and like I said this is not even consistent on food quality, will put up with attitude I am half Peruvian and lol my last name is cook but unfortunately I won’t go back. From what I read they don’t seem to care. It’s just a matter of time. Ugh I wish they could get it together. So it’s too bad. Don’t go to this place

Wonderful Surprise

By Ahlongoria15 |

Delicious food. Extremely surprising...for a shopping strip restaurant. They have it all.... Annabella, our server, was outstanding. She was filled with knowledge about the the plates being offered. She Made ordering a breeze. Everything we ordered was amazing. The cocktails were delicious. The food was also amazing. The deserts complimented the drinks, the appetizers, and the main courses. Everything about this place was just a Wonderful Surprise. We will be returning and becoming frequent customers. Seriously, everything about this place is something worth experiencing over and over, again and again.

Probably The Best Ceviche in San Antonio

By RayRam30 |

Very friendly staff; very good lunch specials, and their ceviche is some of the best I've had anywhere; been in Panama (to me best ceviche in the world), Miami (very good Peruvian rest), and now San Antonio, and their ceviche is just as good. We go there every time we have a chance and cravings for ceviche.

Flavorful, delicious!

By ErikaFeags |

We have been here twice. Their rotisserie chicken with the house mayo is phenomenal! It's tender, perfectly seasoned and when you add the house mayo it's the perfect marriage of salty, savory and creamy! Practically melts in your mouth. We also had the salchipapas (hot dogs and fries) for an appetizer and the blue corn pudding for dessert. The fries here are awesome, perfectly crunchy! The pudding was served hot. It was fragrant and almost a consistency between pudding and jello. I've never tasted anything like it! Great food experience overall. Only bad thing is the service is fair-poor. But if you aren't in a rush and want some delicious food. This place is a must try!

Good and different place

By momdadkidsTexas |

I've been here a few times. The rotisserie chicken is very good. If you take it home, it does re-heat well. The green rice is good, but the French fries are a surprise---really yummy (but they don't re-heat well). They sell a dinner to go special that consists of a rotisserie chicken and like 2 sides. I personally don't "waste" a side on the salad--it's pretty plain. It's much better to get the green rice and French fries. Lots of carbohydrates, but MUCH better. The causa de pollo is quite good, as is the papas a huaicaina (which I probably spelled wrong). The last 2 are rather unique items that really should be tried. I thought the lomo saltado was good, but tasted a bit heavily of soy sauce. I don't know exactly what it's called, but they have a dessert that is a combination of rice pudding and I think Morada fruit that is excellent. This is a family restaurant. It's super clean and has nice feel. It is not a dining room with private nooks or fanciness, but it's not a dingy but good hole in the wall either. It's a very nice place to go. I won't give it 5 stars because it's not that kind of place; but if the ratings category included something like only inexpensive family restaurants, then I'd give this a 5. It's unusual, serves a different type of cuisine, and the staff is very friendly. You should go! It's great.

My new favorite spot!

By Miastacy |

The food was on point! Got the chicken special with fries and a side salad. The seasoning on the salad was delish! The rotisserie chicken is to die for ESP with the green and white-ish sauces. I have no idea what they were but I ate it all up! The waitress was super nice and informative. Not too long of a wait for the food but it was a good wait. Affordable and I enjoyed it very much. I will be coming back!

Excellent Food in an Informal Setting

By Anthony A |

Staying at a hotel just down the road but looking for something "local" for supper one night, I stumbled on the listing for Rocoto's Grill, which is located at the end of a strip center near Rogers and 1604. Parking is plentiful and free. The atmosphere is pleasant, with a family feel - nothing fancy here. I was able to choose my own seat, and the server stopped by right away to take my drink order. Rocoto serves not only alcohol and Peruvian sodas but also natural juices - in large quantities, so no need to ask for more! I ate there for dinner twice and thus was able to try the blackberry and the guanabana versions, both of which were very good (I recommend the latter, if you've never tasted this wonderful fruit). The first night, I opted for the Sudado de Pescado, basically a fish soup with a large piece of steamed mahi mahi floating in the tomato sauce. Fortunately I went for "medium" spicy, which was sufficient (and I like spicy foods). It was very tempting on my second visit to also order the Sudado, but instead I went for the (also excellent) Pollo en Salsa Roja - very flavorful and just enough that I was neither hungry nor stuffed afterwards. Which was a good thing, for the dessert menu makes for some hard choices. Sadly, they were out of the mango passion fruit cheesecake, so I had the very nice trest leches both nights (also had the alfajores to go). Overall, everything was very good, and I only wish that I had enough time to head there for lunch or even breakfast!

Very good food experience. Peruvian cuisine is a wonderful experience and this restaurant does a great job of blending the flavors. Silvia was extremely helpful in answering any questions that we had. Don't expect much in the way of ambiance since it is pretty much a bare bones dining facility.

Fantastic Cultural experience

By Emily C |

All Spanish food isn't Mexican, and this is the place to widen your horizons. I began my meal with a guanabana smoothie and tostones. This food rivals my mothers cooking, and that is saying a lot! My group also had mango smoothies, which I tasted, and could taste the freshness in this flavorful drink, as well. My order of ceviche was tasty and filling. The original flavors came out to kiss my tastebuds to a new level. The sauces that the foods came with were varied and mouth-watering. Give this place a try, and then go back to try each dish at least once. Enjoy!

Great food in an informal restaurant

By Patricio B |

This Peruvian cuisine is truly good and sticks to true Peruvian cuisine. The place is very informal and the difference between the quality of the food and the physical restaurant is abysmal. I the end prices are high for the type of restaurant, decor and ambience it has but th food is worth every penny

Must try the lomo saltado

By soldevep |

There are some items in the menu that I was not a fan of but definitely must try items are the lomo saltado, papa rellena, chicha morada and alfajor. The causa, aji de gallina and papa a la huancaina not so much. I can't wait to go back to try their pollo a la brasa. The service was superior!

Excellent Place

I love Peruvian food. I was here today with my family and it was a really nice experience. Friendly environment, good costumer service and very good food. Something different in San Antonio or Texas. Love it!!! I recommend it.

A Flavorful Lunch

By Mona S |

We arrived for lunch a bit before noon to avoid the rush. Indeed there was a nice crowd for a weekday. Our meals were flavorful and nicely seasoned, freshly prepared and authentic. Unfortunately, they ran out of lunch specials before 12:30! Better planning is definitely in order. In spite of that, our party agreed that it would be worth another visit, perhaps dinner, sometime soon.

Nice change

By 210thuyp |

If you're looking for a lighter menu that won't make you feel like you've eaten a real heavy meal, try some Peruvian food at Rocotos. I really like the green rice and the pollo saltado (sautéed chicken with onions and fries). The pollo saltado had such a wonderful sautéed onion flavor that'll make you either want to share it with others or just keep it all to yourself. The salad had a vinaigrette with a hint of mustard that tasted surprisingly good considering I don't care much for mustard. The house roasted chicken (pollo a la brasa) was a nice alternative to battered fried chicken. Not all the kids liked the food but most forge kids liked the different dishes.

Food is tremendous!

By PamnCecil |

It was a slow time, service was great, food was great (The chicken is incredible, it has me researching Peruvian cooking), I heartily recomend you go, make it a resolution - it will be an easy one to keep!

Delicious authentic cuisine

I finally got around to come to this amazing restaurant. San Antonio has a new big hit in the making. Great food and service.

Love this spot

By Miastacy |

The food is always fresh here and oh so flavorful. Every time I come I'm never let down and the service is always great. The chicken (rotisserie style) is my favorite. Recommend to anyone who likes something a little different than the usual.

Perus flavors in San Antonio

By sergiorms |

Just got back from a 10 day stay in Cuzco and Lima, and it was a pleasant surprise to find great food from Peru, the pollo asado was very good so was Lomo saltado the menu includes many of Peru's dishes including chicha morada and of course Inka cola, we definitely would go back to try their choclo, ceviche and many other dishes. Prices are very reasonable and portions are a good size.. Service was attentive and prompt, restaurant was very clean. would recommend to others.

Not what we were hoping for.

By 581cherylv |

We have been searching for a local SA restaurant that makes Aji de Gallina like our favorite Hermosa Beach, CA restaurant, El Pollo Inka. Sadly, Rocotos' version did not make the cut. They do serve Inka Cola have several other dishes that sound authentic, but this was not a place we would try again. Perhaps they use different recipes? Otherwise was good. Distance from our home too far to give them a second chance.

EXCELLENT Choice...

We had the pleasure to eat at Rocotos Grill.. relaxed atmosphere... Terrific ...Friendly service...and EXCELLENT FOOD...this was our first time trying Peruvian food...what a great experience..Give them a try..you won't be disappointed...

Good ceviche

By M J |

The ceviche was good if you like it Peruvian style. My tostones were not how I like them (soft inside and crispy out) but were not bad either. The natural juices aren't necessarily "natural" (likely Goya) if you are used to the ones you would get anywhere else in Latin America. I would return to give them another try.

Not fancy, but absolutely delicious and affordable.

By Keith R |

Stopped in here for lunch and ordered off the lunch menu. I can't remember the name of the dish, but it was shredded chicken in a creamy, walnut sauce served on a bed of rice. That, a cup of black beans and a bottomless glass of sweet tea was less than six bucks. The food was delicious. Our service was good. What more could you ask for? I'd recommend going for lunch for the best value.

Horrible experience

By mydiimplz |

Horrible service. The food was not what I expected/ did not meet my expectations. Did not taste like any Peruvian Food I have ever eaten, and I eat a lot of Peruvian food. My server was rude. Ordered food and didn't get the second half of my order until many minutes later after half of us had finished our food. We didn't even get to eat together.

Very simple restaurant with GOOD and authentic Peruvian cuisine

By Patricio B |

It is NOT a sophisticated restaurant by any means but the food is quite palatable. When eating Peruvian cuisine we usually eat at high end restaurants in Mexico where Peruvian Cebiches are a delicacy. We asked the waiter to recommend house specialties. We ordered for starters the chicken Causa and the Fried plantains... surprisingly good!! For our main course we ordered mahi mahi Ceviche and lomo salteado. Both very good. The food is way above of restaurant decoration so when entering don’t be fooled by decor you will have a very nice authentic Peruvian Dinner.

Wonderful homemade Peruvian food

By Karen G |

This restaurant has a real homey feel to it. You can tell that the food is made like in "mama's kitchen". We enjoyed the food so much.
