Rolando's is the best. Been going there for years. San Antonio is very unique in its breakfast tacos and assorted tex mex. all can be had here. The super taco is west coast equivalent to the burrito. They are great and the other food stacks up as well. Good lunch plates served all day with a tea are reasonable. Mix of people, young, old, white, hispanic, doesn't matter! SA fav.

Was supposed to do some contracting work on there house thru the insurance and they basically took off with the insurance money even though they are under contract don’t trust them the( owners )

I went here specifically because the reviews seemed really good. The place is definitely not much to look out on the outside or inside. The two items that we've had with the chicken with the absolute most disgusting thing I've ever tasted. The chicken was so dried out and it had such a nasty flavor to it. It definitely did not taste authentic to me.

You do not come here if you are looking for glitchy surroundings but you are at the right place if you love great homemade Mexican Food. I have only had a few meal here but will keep coming back. The food is among the best in SA if you like Tex Mex. I LIKE TEX MEX!!! There are may more popular Mexican Food restaurants in SA but it is only because you have never visited. You only have to eat here once to want to become a regular. Tty it I promise you will be glad you did!

If you love breakfast tacos, you have to eat at Rolando's. The super tacos are the size of about 3 normal tacos and they're delicious and cheap! The decor is classic San Antonio. Not a fancy restaurant but part of the appeal in my opinion. Rolando's is legendary and a must try for everyone living in or visiting San Antonio.

SUPER TACOS! Couldn't have been named anything more perfect than that, because these tacos truly are SUPER. Both in size and in taste. The menu is massive and all four of the tacos that we tried were fantastico!!! Loved It and will definitely be going back to San Antonio, if for no other reason than to eat a Super Taco!!!! Yummmmmm!!!!

Stopped by here over Labor Day weekend for their breakfast tacos. My traveling companions all rave about this place and eat here at least once over the aforementioned weekend. I have eaten at this location once before years ago, but prefer another location. Ordered the id-sized Carne Guisada w/ queso (cheese) just like the morning before (at another location) as I wanted to compare the two (2) locales. I have to be honest folks, this location misses the mark set by the other the morning before. The tortilla did not seem 'fresh'; in fact I would almost say it was (ohhh the horror of it.....) store bought?? Even if it wasn't store-bought, it did not appear to be made by 'una ama de la casa' {a housewife}. I just couldn't taste the 'love' in the tortilla (i.e. it did not appear to be made by hand). Even the carne guisada missed the mark. Yes it was the typical beef tips and a beef gravy sauce, but it just did not have the same excellent flavor that I had oh so enjoyed the day before. My traveling companions like this location because we now stay at a hotel on the North side of SA, and certainly this location is much much closer to where we stay. However I like the authenticity, taste and flavor of the food (especially the carne guisada y queso) at the South side location. Just my preference.

Thank you Rolando's Super Taco for saving the day! Fantastic as usual, been coming here since I was a child. The obnoxious and rude lady at the taco place down the road lost our business forever. The staff was beyond accommodating and helpful for a party of 11 on Mother's Day. Gratis food and prices!

Nice little place, doesn't look like much from the outside or inside for that matter but the food and service is pretty darn good. I had a lunch plate: burrito plate with rice and beans. It tasted good and portion was decent. My other half got the potato and egg plate with tortillas. Let me tell you that these tortillas were massive like 12 inches and they were homemade. Prices were great! And service was even better!! I would def come back.

If you want some good home style tex mex, look no further. The super tacos are ridiculous. Pizza size tacos!

Learned about this location on Facebook and decided to make the drive from Houston to give it a try...... totally recommend it! The building itself is sketchy but the food is good! Super fajita taco was really good! Just look at my photo!

This is where I take my kids for breakfast when we are in town. Great Mexican food with authentic service and atmosphere. I've been eating here since 1990. 25 years of really good food!!

No you better be starved to death The tacos here are more like monster burritos and you would think that because they are so large they would lack in flavor. Well let me tell you that is NOT the case these things are freakin great !! Go hungry go now and go often you will not be disappointed

Eaten here a few times in the past was, good, cheap, large portions. Portions are still big. The large chorizo and egg tacos w cheese came out 3 minutes after we ordered. Luke warm. Cheese wouldn't even melt. The waitresses were in their 30s-40s and could not speak English. Our waitress had to get the host to take our orders. Went to pay for our $30 dollar breakfast, tipped the waitress 20% despite the language barrier and then they charged us a 10% processing fee for using our debt card. I have seen enough episodes of Ozarks to know something ain't right here. We won't be going back.

Twenty years ago when I was in college, I used to pop in to Rolando's to pick up breakfast when I knew I was going to be having a long day. These days, it's high on my priority list of places to stop when I back home visiting San Antonio. I hadn't realized that we had never taken the kids there for breakfast until we were in the parking lot this morning! TIME flies when you're raising kids! But in the last two decades, Rolando's hasn't changed a bit. It's still the same little neighborhood taco joint I fell in love with when I was a teenage college student. And the food is just as good as I remembered. Same nice staff, same tasty food, same AMAZING tortillas! My son didn't believe that you could possibly have a taco bigger than your head, and he was excited to get his order! And my daughter fell in love with the awesome family feel of the place when our sweet server kept calling her "mija." It was a perfect breakfast. Gracias, Rolandos! Te amo! You always make me happy to come home again. Now to buy some fat pants!

I was completely shocked to see this restaurant rated only # 209 in SA restaurants on TA, and was prompted to post a review from our most recent visit because this place deserves MUCH better. Of all the restaurants in SA, Rolando's is one of the few we MUST go to before flying back to up here in "yankeeland." Rolando's is yet another San Antonio tradition that struggles against the marketing, the convenience and the mindlessness of buying food from a drive thru at a "franchise" of a multi-national, multi-billion dollar corporation that shovels "mexican" food from machines into plastic or styrofoam boxes. Do us all a favor, eat here and avoid those places! I was introduced to Rolando's as a student 20+ years ago when a group of us went for breakfast to the "best taco place on the south side." We ate at Rolando's and after realizing I couldn't finish my amazing breakfast taco meal, I took the other 1/2 home. Is it true? 1/2 a taco would fill a college student? Absolutely. I shared the other 1/ 2 taco with my then girlfriend the following morning and the rest is history. Rolandos is, and has been the single best place for breakfast tacos in San Antonio, with fresh HAND MADE, traditional (and locals will know that means-made like grandma made) tortillas, huge tacos, hot salsa, cold flowing iced tea, and plenty of to go foil. Rolando's is home of the "El Gigante" a 5 ingredient taco, comprised of any 5 items of your choice. My favorite (not for the meek: Bacon, Egg, Cheese, Potato, and... frijoles. OMG!) You can have portions of this amazing taco both before and after your nap, (which you will need) this meal is imperative during fiesta or the holidays with your family. Sure the place only has like 15 tables, the parking is terrible off of hildebrand and blanco, but the food is absolutely worth it. On our most recent visit, the place was packed- good that they were busy, but bad that we had to park in the crappy un-paved, broken-glass ridden area of the lot. (Ladies DO NOT LEAVE VALUABLES IN SIGHT IN A CAR!) It was a sunday- and the line led out the door. We generally use this as the guage as to how long it would take to get a table. If the line is inside- 20 mins max, outside 40 mins max. Since it was the holidays, and some larger group was in line ahead of us- it was almost an hour wait for a table- probably the longest wait we've ever had. The wait was worth it though- just like it always has been. The salsa was hot and fresh. The tacos were hot from the kitchen and the tortillas were amazing- like cake, soft inside with a crispy outside. The bacon crispy, but thick and full of flavor, cheese was salty and thick, and the frijoles gave the heavy earthy, bacony flavor I crave. The tea was perfect and the service, while understandably slow, was typical. After breakfast and a two hour nap- my hangover was gone and while feeling 10 pounds heavier, I was ready to hit the town and do some shopping. Just thinking about the meal makes me wish I could have an el gigante right now! I realize now that my entire meal cost some $7. The avocado garnish, one drink and a tip alone would cost that much in Chicago. That is before the cost of the taco! So, skip the chain restaurants and make a short trip to Rolando's, tell your friends to meet you there and take pictures of the taco that ate SA! I know if we could- we absolutely would!

Great food!!!!! And a must stop to get one taco every time i pass by. It lives up to its name when u want a super taco.....

I love this place I have been going since I was a kid and now I bring my daughter. They know us by name and know our order by memory. They have a great staff and great food. My favorite taco is the Nando it's a combination of Carbe Guisada, beans, bacon and cheese but all their food is amazing and they have good prices. The only bad part is the parking is small and of course they can at times have a long wait but that's how you know the food is good.

These tacos really are SUPER. They offer dine-in or take out (with super-huge cups of coffee too). Barbacoa on Sundays - perfect with some cilantro and avocado slices on the side! Restaurants like Rolando's are why San Antonio is a great place to live when on a budget. Great quality, service, authentic food and no mucho dinero.

Ok, this is the best hangover cure, Tacos bigger than your head and they're the best!

These tacos are huge as I am sure you have read elsewhere, but even better than that they are huge and tasty. You can also have average sized tacos if you wish. The menu offers many options, and the salsas that come out to the table are authentic and spicy. Just what we wanted!!! This place is a little dive on the side of the road, not in the most attractive area of town, and not the most attractive building to look at......but the inside was clean and welcoming albeit not fancy at all. Stop in and try a yummy breakfast taco.....you wont regret it!

Wow, this place is so highly rated it just won the WOAI poll for best tacos in San Antonio. That's a joke; These polls are at the mercy of email campaigns. We stopped mid-morning on a weekday and they were acting confused. There were five tables that hadn't been cleared and there was no greeter, and no server. We waited awhile for a menu, then I went over to ask for menus, later our server showed up with a menu. This place is in a run-down building that's seen better days. The chips are very sparse and mostly broken if you want more it will cost you. The salsa was not very good, there's not much in there. They have two more intense salsas, but there's not much to those either. Of course, we had to try the super tacos. The service here was very slow. When they arrived the tacos were large, but the ingredients were dicey. The Armando was supposed to have chiliquiles, but they had only partially scrambled egg along with white cheese, some corn chips and tiny pieces of chicken on a very thin and dry corn tortilla. This taco cost $6.45. That's not cheap for what you get. The Texano had refried beans, cheese, a dab of guacamole, and little sausage slices. We cut both in half to get close to a regular taco. At over $3.30 each these are muy caro compared to the marketplace. When you recap this restaurant, the results are much less than super. Mediocre food, below average service and no ambiance, and high prices

I have to say that when Mari stopped running the place the food and service declined. I was so happy to know she is back running things and was great to see her smiling face in the kitchen pass through. The super tacos are stuffed with amazing ingredients and you can't go wrong with any of the speciality combinations but you could also just create your own combo of favorite ingredients they will make it your way! My favorite is El Unico with the David right behind. I eat half of each and then take the other halves home for later!

Always make a point to stop here when we visit San Antonio. They are like family to us and so happy they have continued to stay open. The food is very good and generous. They staff is friendly and attentive.

Just north of downtown San Antonio on Hildebrand you can find Rolando's Super Taco. The competition for Tex-Mex in this city is so fierce, you better have a really good menu. They have regular size tacos and super tacos, double in size along with a very extensive menu. The tortillas are hand-made as are the three picante sauces served. Everything the we tried was very good including breakfast tacos, carne guisada, rice and beans; however, there are a good number of Tex-Mex restaurants in the San Antonio area that are better. The service was also fast and good but prices tended to be on the high-side. They close in the early afternoon and parking is somewhat limited.

Yes the tacos were super big as advertised. Two out of three of us were not impressed as it lacked flavor. We both had to add salt, pepper and sauce to add flavor.

First of all the flour tortillas are excellent just way too big for me. I ordered the enchiladas and they were served steaming hot. The enchiladas had Carne Guicda gravy and for me these are two different meals and should not be combined. I found the prices to be a bit high so I don't think I'll be coming back.

Ok I'm going to make this an easy one: PROS: Friendly Staff GREAT food HUGE Portions GREAT price. You just can't go wrong there!!! CONS: Crowded People always trying to sell you things. Out of the times we've been, we have been offered burnt cds, movies, rosaries, candy, someone just wanting spare change, etc. I'm not sure why Rolando's allows this to go on, When I'm eating, the LAST thing I want is for some guy to try and sell me illegally burned movies or ask me if I have spare change. LET ME ENJOY MY FOOD! Other then that, yes, its a hole in the wall, it really could use some updating, but Rolando's isn't about being trendy and hip... it's about the food and they are amazing at that.

If you come for breakfast on the weekend bring something to read. The wait is pretty quick and the food is outstanding. Tacos are large and full of flavor. Many kinds of salsa find your own favorite.

There's a reason San Antonio is one of the fattest cities. You can get diabetes walkingf in this place. Food is really good and generous. Customers are increasingly disturbing in their obesity and attire.

Went there and got the NANDO Super Taco, and it was delicious.......everyone should try this place/it is a gem of a place in San Antonio

This is the best place to hit up for breakfast! The staff is always nice and the food is AMAZING! I live in Manhattan and will visit San Antonio just to eat here!!!

We live out of town but this is our favorite place to have breakfast. The food is excellent, the portions are huge and the people are amazing. The owner is like family to us. There is no better place for tacos in San Antonio. The combination super size tacos are so tasty. The Unico, Regio, Nando, Sinhoe and David are great mixes of ingredients.

If you like a hole in the wall with great food and friendly people, this is your place! Delicious salsa and tacos. The only complaint is that the potatoes are cut thin like chips and very greasy. Server was delightful.

This place is your typical hole-in-the-wall restaurant. The atmosphere is shabby and nothing to look at from the outside, but inside you will find great food. The queso is thick and yummy and the tacos are made with tortillas that are fantastic. The staff is friendly and helpful. The only criticism I have is that there needs to be a hostess at the front organizing the long line of customers. It is somewhat confusing to just be standing in the doorway and not knowing if there is a wait list and how long it is if there is one. Otherwise, great stuff!!

I order one super and one small fajita taco curbside. Found out I was charged twice for two orders not one.,the lady excuse was they have a new cashier. They claim one charge was void and the money should be returned to my account within five business days. Then I request my copy for the second charge for proof, and again the lady made excuses and finally gave me a receipt that wasn't mine, it was someone that paid cash. This means the lady charged my card to give herself a tip without my approval. This is bad for business, and Rolando's taco a bad rep.

But like really really hungry? Then you need to stop here and grab a taco. These super tacos are outstanding. It will kill your hunger, and leave you satisfied. The staff is very friendly and helpful and they make sure you understand what you're getting into. Anytime it's breakfast taco time and I am on this side of town I stop here, and you should too.

This place is a hunger buster.True super taco Huge portions If you and your friends or family want to get full for breakfast this the place. It does get crowded but dont let that get to you the food is great. stop by and see for yourself .

I am a foodie so I mean it when I say if you are too, this is a bucket list item for ya. Huge tacos, great flavor and a cheap price to tag along with it. This is also a pretty small place and it does tend to get packed but the food is quick and fresh!

It's been a while since we had eaten at Rolando's so we stopped in for breakfast. The super tacos there are a beast so if you have a healthy appetite it's great place to eat. They have a larger menu so there's more than just tacos.

My wife forced me to eat here and the food was delicious and they do give you a generous portion. The facility doesn't appear to be the most sanitary but hey, after eating Iraqi food I'm not complaining. Go here if your strapped for cash and want a whole lot of food.

A local favorite for over 40 years, we don’t make it to this part of town very often but this place has been consistent throughout the years. They have both tacos and plates and the staff works hard to take care of you. Just remember, Super means SUPER SIZED tacos, so know what your in for.

It is the same food I ate some 20 years ago! Hot, great size portion... just amazing Mexican Food! Confort food! Comida excelente! Comida Mexicana caseira!

Discovered Rolando's when I first came to San Antonio. Rolando actually works there! This is a family business which doesn't skimp on food. Don't come when dieting! My favorite is a super taco for breakfast (David's). So fulfilling!

I have heard about Rolando's for years and we finally went. The tortillas are huge and good but quality of items in the tortilla are just okay. Potatoes very greasy. Homemade corn tortillas very good. Expensive because of size of tacos which some restaurants call burritos

Enticed by the name of the place and the fact that I have lived in San Antonio most of my life and never tried this place, we decided to pay a breakfast visit. It is pretty much what you would expect for an old neighborhood restaurant that was converted from an old pier and beam house. Down two steps from the entry and into the main dining room, the floor is slanted enough to make the first table take a nose dive into the wall. The rest of the room is not quite so structurally challenged. Before I get to the culinary negatives, I would like to say that the tortillas were fresh, soft and supple enough to hold a lot of ingredients without tearing. On to the bean and cheese nachos with picadillo and guacamole which were served just warm. They looked great, but the beans lacked any kind of flavor and a bit more cheese would have replaced some of the missing flavor profile. The other ingredients were unremarkable. The plethora of combination super tacos each represent a plate sized affair and as big as I had expected. The only other restaurant I have been to where the tacos are hub cap size are Isabel's in Port Isabel, and those are some great tacos. Unfortunately this place used the same tasteless beans as we had on the nachos mixed with scrambled eggs, country sausage, avocado slices and potato chips. Potato chips? I checked the menu and it said papas. What the . . .? The waiter sheepishly explained that they used fried potato chips for the papas as if they made them fresh. Not. These were purely store bought Lays. What an oddity and a disappointment!! My wife thought her regular picadillo and carne guisada tacos were O.K., but not as good as a restaurant near us that we have come to measure all other Mexican food breakfasts by. To their credit, service was fine and the prices are reasonable here. A return visit would have me ordering just the very basic tacos (egg and bacon, sausage and egg, etc.) rather than a combo. Also wouldn't mind trying one of their lunch plates (as long as it is not served with beans or papas). Just my opinion, but my advice to you is to skip anything that has frijoles or papas in it. Or, for the beans, take some packets of taco sauce from Taco Bell or Del Taco if you are going to order anything with frijoles and apply them liberally. Otherwise, your Rolando's Super Taco will only gain Rolando's Mediocre Taco level at best.

Waited close to one hour to receive cold food. Waitress seemed to be bothered by the customers. Management wasn't any better.. Will never go there again. First and last ever..

Well after hearing rave reviews of this place, by friends, we decide to try it during Fiesta San Antonio. Well, yes, of course because of Fiesta, theres a wait on Sunday morning. Well, after only waiting about 15 minutes we were seated. We were given menus quickly, but our waitress didnt come to get our order until about 10 minutes after getting the menu. Yes the chips and 3 bowls of salsa came, but the home made salsa was ruined by the tase of store bought chips. Tostitos are better tasting than their chips. Well here comes the ordering. Since I didnt have a BIG appetite, I didnt order the SUPER TACO. I saw someone else who ordered it and it really didnt seem all that appealing. Well I order one of the specials from the front of the menu. I ask about the chicken enchiladas. Ive never heard of poblana enchiladas. I ask Do they come with Sour cream sauce? she says yes. They end up coming out about 15 minutes later with everyone elses food and they are covered in this dark chili sauce with a dollop of sour cream. I tell her they are wrong and i want Sour cream chicken enchiladas. ( Now who in the state of Texas hasnt heard of these? ) She says they can cover them in regular sour cream. I explain that i want the sour cream sauce. She says they dont have that. So I ask for Cheese Enchiladas with queso on top ( the cheese sauce only -NO CHILI ). She then brings out Chicken enchiladas with cheese sauce, so I dont have to wait any longer I just eat them. Yea they were ok, but none of the food was great. It seemed to be just like any other lil mexican restaraunt in San Antonio or Dallas. The menudo tasted more like chili water than menudo and their lengua mexicana was tough. Yes, granted that our ticket was only around $15.00, but I would rather have just gone to the market and ate at a vendor there! Very small, bad parking, ok service.

This is my favorite place to go for breakfast! The tacos are huge, so bring your appetite and only order ONE! The Nando is my all time favorite!

I was picking up an Uber Eats delivery from this establishment. I did not bring my phone in, as I do sometimes, but I memorized the customer name and order#. The food was not prepared yet, so I waited. Upon handing over the food, the hostess asked me, in limited English, what I thought meant, what is the pick-up info. (I'm Hispanic, but my Spanish is limited-so no biggie) I repeated it, and the woman in the kitchen said something I didn't catch and then in a louder voice said, "I'll handle it." She came out and immediately started yelling, "Where's your phone, we need to see the phone, THAT'S HOW THIS IS GOING TO WORK!" I told her I would go and get it but that she don't need to be all loud about it. She said, "BYE!" Suffice it to say I was appalled, and extremely pissed. I have NEVER had any restaurant yell at me like I was their kid. When I returned with my phone, I hit the check box and showed it to the hostess, and here comes the other woman again, "CAN I SEE IT? CAN I SEE WHAT YOU DID?? NO! NO! YOU NEED TO SWIPE IT AND START THE DELIVERY, THAT'S NOT HOW THIS WORKS." I swiped it and she says, with real smarmy hand gestures, "YOU UNDERSTAND NOW FOR THE NEXT TIME?? WHEN EEEVER YOU PICK UP ORDERS FROM US, THAT'S HOW IT'S GONNA BE DONE OK?!" On the side of the restaurant it reads, JESUS IS LORD. This is true, but we are told to be slow to anger and to bridle our tongue. That's all I'll say about that. I will close by saying, that as an Uber driver, I would, and will NEVER deliver their food, or eat there, AGAIN.

I moved away from San Antonio many years ago, but Rolando's is always my first stop when I get back into town. Rolando's is a classic example of what Mexican Food in San Antonio is supposed to be like. Working class and upper class people rub elbows here. Everyone in San Antonio who knows Mexican food knows that the best food comes from places like Rolando's, small, family owned with food made by people who know what the food is supposed to taste and look like. There had been a period of a few months when a new owner took over for a while and the place really went down hill and I suspect that some of the less than stellar reviews on Tripadvisor are from that period. But fortunately the original owners, I mean the entire family, came back and the place is outstanding again. Rolando's and the places like it are the fabric of San Antonio. Since I left San Antonio, I've been to great restaurants all over the world, but no doubt my favorite and the favorite of everyone in my family is Rolando's.
Horrible...But that was before remodel
've been eating at Rolando's for more than 30 years. But that was back when there were multiple Rolandos all over the city. The super tacos are fantastic. Huge! My favorite is the Rolando (yes, that's the actual name -- Eggs, beans, guacamole, etc.). But, over time, they started shutting down. The last one over in our area was taken over by someone else and changed the name...but the cook stayed there and you could still order the same tacos and they were cooked/served in the same Rolando style. After many years without a Rolando, I finally found the #1 Rolando. Was so excited to go to it. A good bit out of the way but I found it. When I walked in it took all my will power to stay. It was god awful filthy. The carpet was dark and sticky. It smelled bad and moldy. The room was dirty. The service was horrible and slow. The glass I was given for tea was chipped. I ordered my "usual" and didn't finish it. The eggs had a funny bitter/sour taste like they were turning/rotten. I vowed never to return. That was about 1 1/2 years ago. I have now seen that last November the place was remodeled. And saw a comment about the "owners returning". So, it sounds like the original owners have worked at bringing the place back to what it used to be. I will give the place a try again. I miss my "real" Rolando tacos!
