I chose this restaurant based largely on (1) location and (2) interesting menu. We were not disappointed. We both had dishes that are not the standard Indian restaurant fare (and are not on the online menu)--lamb cooked with red wine and ginger and lamb in a creamy cashew sauce--and were very pleased with both. Service was attentive, informative, and friendly. We'd happily go back.

This is truly north indian style food the way it should be prepared... a little expensive but the food is delicious with proper balance of spices and good service

Decided to go here after looking at our Indian restaurant reviews. Glad we did. We were Sat right away, got our wine and dinner quickly. One of the best butter chicken we have had and one of the best lamb biryani. Overall enjoyed our evening very much

Went to this restaurant in san diego for an Indian Dinner. The restaurant is easy to find as it is centrally located. The ambience and decor of the restaurant is good but nothing to fancy. We were seated and for a long time no one came to take our order. On asking one of the waiters who was cleaning tables next to ours to send someone to take our order he got very annoyed. We ordered the vegetable pakoras, Aloo sabzi and dal tarka which was very good. Unfortunately cannot say the same for service. It took very long for them to get the bill and to our shock we were charged for items we did not order. On confronting them the server was giggling as if it was very amusing and said oh sorry it was ordered by the table behind you but we put it in your bill by mistake. In all I wouldn't personally endorse this place. If you choose to go there don't expect first class service and check the items on your bill before paying.

We had lamb biryani, it's was average. Second dish was butter chicken gravy it's was tasty with nan or plain rice. They nice seatings. Also, they serve halal food.

Excellent Indian food in the heart of San Diego! Had appetizers, Tikka Masala, veggies - all great. Nice, traditional atmosphere with white tablecloths.

We ordered two dishes: Chicken Biryani and Chicken Tikka masala. Both were good. Service is good. Conveniently located in downtown San Diego. Walking distance from Seaport Village.

The restaurant looks plain outside especially with the name Royal the inside though makes up for it. The menu describes what it is you are actually gonna eat. We enjoyed the food, the spices is not overpowering and service is good.

We ordered chicken tikka masala. Flavor was excellent, spiciness was a little lower per level than I've got at other places, so I'll probably get more spice next time (ordered a 5 out of 10) it's closer to other restaurant's 4 star spice level. Portions could have been better for the cost. But overall delicious, and would go again if I was craving good Indian food!

Here at conference. Always look for good Indian when I travel. Not cheap, $15 but don't mind if it's good. Not much selection. One of the smaller ones I've seen. First thing that I noted was absolutely no spice in any dish. I mean this is an Indian restaurant. I guess one of the reasons I didn't note any Indians eating there. It was as exciting as a box of cornflakes. There was a hot sauce offered by the coriander sauce but why didn't they just have some bottles of hot sauce to pour on your food? It changed the flavor and everything taste the same. Not sure what they were thinking. Chicken Tika had such a watered down sauce it looked like plain chicken cubes on my plate. It was also tasteless. The samosas were actually pretty good. Crispy, flavorful. The tandoori chicken was dry, cold, over cooked. And where were the onions??? The other chicken dish was in a brown sauce and not as bad as the Tika. Keer was good. Overall couldn't recommend this to anyone. If they actually read their reviews perhaps they might try their own food. You can only hose the tourist for so long and then word gets around.

We went for dinner when I stayed in San Diego for a conference. We had Parotta, Naan and chicken curry. All tasted good and the portion size was more than adequate. The price was also reasonable and service was good too.

walking distance from my home the best Indian cuisine in San Diego. We eat here in a regular basis, is close, the staff is friendly, and the food never disappoints.

I was tired after flying in from Houston, and once unpacked, registered for conference, I realized I was starving. Wandering around I came upon this little place and becuase I was beyond hungry and entering the hangry stage, I figured the advertised buffet was my best bet. Surely something might taste good. Expectations low, and surprise! Everything I tasted was amazing up to and including the garlic naan. The service was impeccable.

We had the lunch buffet at the Royal India. The buffet offers a reasonable choice. We had a good meal, nothing remarkable, but OK for a quick lunch. Then again, the prices is very reasonable, so overall OK for value.

Hopeless. Took a long time to serve our order. Customer service worst. Though items were good, customer service and time taken to serve orders really put me. The mosquitoes gave good company

We stopped here on the Bite San Diego food tour and tried the buffet. I liked it a lot. I don't know what the complaints are. I've had tons of Indian food in my life and while this was not the best, it was far above average. Flavors were deep and complex, as you expect. Heat level was fine. I don't have any complaints. I would eat here even if not on a tour. Lunch buffet is $15, which is a bit high considering the small size of the buffet. But the food is really good.

The restaurant was exactly what I was looking forward to remember tasty of India. Nice waiters. Wonderful food. Recommend. Decoration really nice as well

We stopped in after a long day at a conference not far from the restaurant. It had good Indian food and good atmosphere. The staff were attentive. Large portions of Nan bread. I had the Butter Tarka and it was very good. We also had the Palak Paneer which I was told was ok. We appreciated the attentiveness of our wait staff.

Cannot go wrong, everything is delicious. No wait, friendly staff, nice interior with corner booths, food came out fast.

Almost without exception, my wife loves to sit outside and they a nice outdoors area. I ordered the lamb korma which was a little different than my previous experience but it was good. My wife was happy with her chicken tikka masala.

I had the opportunity to have dinner at this restaurant during a social meeting. We had nice time and good food. The dessert was outstanding.

This restaurant is very well located and has a great presence on the street. There are tables outside and the smell of food wafts out the front door. We actually walked past to look for another restaurant, but that aroma drew us back. The restaurant is nicely decorated but the tables need some attention. The first we sat at was wobbly, a lot. They couldn't easily fix it so they moved us to...another wobbly table. This one was fixed though, but hardly the best first impression. Service was prompt. The menu isn't extensive, but there is a good range of vegetarian food. I had the chicken madras, while my colleague had lamb rogan josh. Having never eaten in an Indian restaurant in San Diego, I don't know if it customary to be asked if you want your madras normal hot or Indian hot. I wasn't aware there were variations but I would say go for Indian hot. I like my madras spicy, like a slight perspiration. This one didn't do that. Matter Paneer was got for a side and it was tasty. Price was $80 for one appetizer, two entrees and two sides. Soft drinks only.

We came off the island to the Gaslamp Quarter and headed here for their lunch buffet. The service was very friendly and attentive. All of the food was delicious, although to us a little less spicy and flavorful than we expect for Indian. Prices moderate.

Good food, vegetarian options. The service is super fast. And a decent price. Good wine and liquor options.

Ok so I eat in a lot of Indian restaurants and let me tell you, this is not one to miss. Extremely friendly staff and amazing food. We had chicken tika masala, chicken madras,, chicken biryani and the best naan bread and oh my god we were full and it was amazing food. You shouldn't miss this place.

I ate at Royal India twice during my four night stay in San Diego, absolutely outstanding food! I was thrilled to see great vegetarian food on the menu, traditional items and some new options too. Difficult to choose! Everything I ordered was delicious, seasoned as requested, and generous portioned. The servers were highly attentive and friendly. There is patio dining which is a fun option in the perfect San Diego weather, but the classy vibe inside was too fun to resist. The decor is tasteful and comfortable. I highly recommend!

The servers and staff were very friendly, but the food was just ok. My dining companion wasn't able to eat it because it was too spicy. And she's Indian!

I was in town for a conference and joined a colleague here for the lunch buffet. It was a little pricey IMO. The food was OK but lacked much spice. The service was pretty good.

If you're a lover of Indian food, then you know that quality can be all over the map. Thankfully, the food at Royal India lies in a very good part of the map. All of the seven or so dishes we sampled were tasty, the portions were generous, and the prices were quite reasonable.

The food was fine - not amazing but acceptable. The poppadoms were rather small and really expensive! The service was good. Overall it was fine but too expensive for what it was.

We showed up shortly after 11:00 AM and were the only guests for the buffet, which had the usual assortment of Indian dishes.

The restaurant (Del Mar branch) went really down. Dishes are definitely not authentic Indian, actually are extremely adapted to American/European tastes. To North American standards - surely below average. My visit there one year ago was much better (would give at that time 4+), now not more than 2.

Went to this place during my business meetings..Located near to San Diego convention center....Food was amazing, especially vegetarian dishes....Loved their Samosas...Lovely ambience....Great service too...Would definitely recommend this place.....Worth a visit..!!!!

I do it typically visit Indian restaurants but I went with a colleague and was happy with the restaurant and menu options. They had combination dinners that gave you a little taste of a few signature Indian dishes. I went with the lamb dish and had it medium spiced and was very happy with everything they brought out.

I eat Indian food whenever I can and with the large population of Indian nationals in San Diego I expected good quality. The problem was that many of the restaurants were take-out or had no liquor license. The Royal India was a very well decorated restaurant that offered sit-down eating and a choice of beers. The problem with unfamiliar Indian restaurants is that you don't know their spice levels. I like my curry really hot, and given a choice of one to ten I chose an eight, which honestly, was just a tad above mild. If I ever get the chance to return, I'll be sure to tell them to amp it up. Apart from that the meal was good, the bread and Somosas were excellent.

Though this says fine dining the food is very below average. Atmosphere is clean though. Location is good n easy to get to. But otherwise i will not recommend this place unless you have no other choice available

its situated in downtown area roughly 15 minute walk from Broadway Pier. After touring USS Midway, we were tired and hungry and looking for good Indian food so went to this place. The lunch was closed and they were serving dinner options at 4 PM :). Anyways, it was mostly empty at that time with just two more families occupying the space in an otherwise large hall. We were served quickly. Food was hot and fresh and tasty. Complimentary rice and free refill on the Indian Chaai was an add on. Overall a good option for nice Indian food near to Bayfront.

I have eaten Indian food in numerous countries around the world including India and this was one of the poorest meals I've had. I ordered Chicken Vindaloo and my son had Chicken Tikka Massala. The spices were overpowering (Not as in hotness) and the taste was compromised. The service was adequate but nothing to write home about. Its the first time I've ever seen my son leave food so that pretty much tells the story. A general observation is that Indian restaurants in the USA do not come close to those in Europe and the far east. I'm sure I'll get a reply back to say that their chefs are trained to follow traditional recipes but I wold beg to differ. At the end of the day I am only one customer (well 2 including my son) and we weren't impressed.

We were in SD for work and searched out Indian food for supper. We were so happy we did. The food was GREAT! The service was so attentive. So glad we went here!

I had been to this restaurant with my family. The foods are very tasty and specially made for indians. We were staying in Loews Coronado Bay but for lunch and dinner we used to come to this restaurant. Very neat and clean. Their chicken tandoor ..... No words to describe. Simply I can say yummy. Really getting indian food specially the indian taste in Sandiego is amazing. Loved it.

Found consistency in this excellent restaurant. There's allways a new plate to discover. Wine prices could be lower. They have good and variate beers. Will come again.

The food was just great. Choice of spicy-ness offered; the portion is filling. The ambience was just as great: calm music, nice decorations, and clean. And the service was also awesome: personable, friendly and accommodating.

Spicy curry with nice atmosphere. Restaurant was clean and staff were friendly. A wall water foundation is beautiful. Food was nothing to write home about.

It was Wednesday, 15 March 2017. 7.00 pm. We visited this restaurant looking for Indian food. We've been to places in Europe, North America and Australia and found that Indian food never lets you down; well now that believe will not hold true. The restaurant is the fine dining type, and it was the AAOS meeting week. The guest nation for this meeting was India, so it wasn't surprising that there were many Indians in there. However, the food and service has much left to be desired..... although the menu seemed exhaustive. We ordered the starters, cauliflower and potato pakora. It wasn't too bad. But the main dishes were not good. We asked for the lamb kurma and prawn pepper fry with rice and naan. The curry was probably made with the same gravy base and used for both. Prawn pepper fry is supposed to be DRY.... that's why it's called FRY.... And there is supposed to be lots of pepper in it, as well...... Lamb kurma is supposed to be creamy and light, with coconut flakes and if permitted, kas-kas....... There was not of it in there. At the end, I asked the waiter for the toothpicks, he pointed to a table at the exit showing where I could help myself...... !

Are you bored of the exotic food and want to have an appetizing Indian meal? I highly recommend the Royal India Restaurants in San Diego. I visited recently and will be definitely going back with my friends, family and colleagues.

I visited with my friend for lunch buffet. Dishes were very oily, tasted same, and were cold. They probably compromise on the quality in order to keep it low priced.

I wanted to try this restaurant, because I had been to the one up the street and wanted to compare in order to satisfy my love for Indian food. I was not disappointed. This restaurant is very professional, and will wait on you with very friendly service. The lighting is low, but not dark. The ceiling is high owing to the historical building. You have beautiful antique plate glass windows to peer out on your private corner of the Gas Lamp. And of course, they have Kingfisher beer. They could add mood music. It gets a little quiet. I didn't want to complain though.

Not much to say. The mixed appetizers were disappointing because everything was deep fried. Everything else was good but not extraordinary. Minimal choice of beers.

Really enjoyed the atmosphere, food and the service. It was nice to be pampered and well feed. I had the mango curry and the mango dessert and enjoyed it very much.

Great location. Great ambience. Great service. Food very very tasty. Only 'complaint' would be charging for things that most Indian restaurants give for free: Poppadoms, chutney etc. Also, lack of soda and alcohol free beer in drinks. But would definitely return next time in San Diego.

Just back from Royal India. What a disappointment !. As someone who is married to a great Indian man. I have spent many years cooking traditional Indian food. What we had tonight was overloaded with salt and Chilli to the point it we could not taste anything else. How sad to see people eat what they presume Indian food should taste like. I wish I could have a more positive view as the staff were pleasant

This has been my only visit to this Indian and we decided on mains only. Service was excellent and the food tasted fresh and was served quickly. We were also asked if required extra rice which was a nice touch. The curry was very nice without being annoying above average.

I'll make this review in bulletpoints to make it easy to see why you shouldn't come here: 1) Waiters were disinterested and very shy when it came to ordering - zero eye contact and mumbling meant understanding our waiter almost impossible. 2) The restaurant lighting is brighter than a summer's day in San Diego. And this was at 7:30pm! Lowering the lighting really helps the mood folks... 3) Flies. Fruit flies were pretty much swarming around the restaurant. This was the bit that really had me worried because if there were this many in the dining area, I shudder to think how many were in the kitchen. I worry greatly about the hygiene of the kitchens. I spent most of the meal 'clapping' the flies (I think I got nearly 10 in total...) - I've never had a restaurant experience like it, I'll put it that way. 4) We were given 2 small poppadums with no explanation of what the dips were - which were also given to us in vats. OK, quantity is great in this instance, but we could barely make a dent before...(see next bulletpoint).... 5) Around 3 minutes later, we received our mains. I had finished about half of one poppadum by this point and were told by the waiters to move our plates so that the mains could be put in front of us. Surely even the most primitive of restaurants knows to space out the starters and mains slightly to allow the customer to actually finish his/her course? 6) The food was OK. It wasn't terrible but it wasn't anything to shout about. I will accept that our standards of curry are probably slightly higher (we're British) so as curries go in America, perhaps this was one of the better ones? Hard to tell. 7) Overpriced. Final bill of $95 and that was for 2 poppadums, 2 mains and a bottle of wine. Happy to hear if this is actually not overpriced - but I'll put it this way - for the same money, you could have starters/mains/desserts and wine at one of the best indian restaurants in the UK. And the quality would put this establishment to shame frankly. So that's about it. If you know what a good curry tastes like, don't go here. If you don't, then this place is fine, you'll just have to become adept at killing flies and be ready to take out a second mortgage on your house.

hotel has good food and good choice for vegetarian but the things go haywire during busy hours. We went there on Day 1, we had good choice (~6 items) and very friendly service. Come second day, we had only one choice (vegetarian jain menu) and with no one paying any attention to you. They have 2 menus - one is their full menu and another one is their shortened menu, during busy hours, they just give you a shortened menu and hide the full menu where you have lot of choices. when you ask for more choice, they simply refuse to say - our chef is busy right now and can't make your food of choice. well, I saw that half of their restaurant is empty and open. How come this is a busy hour for them? but later realized that for them, busy hour is anything nearly half occupied tables.

We reserved a table under my name for six. It was suppose to be a surprise for my husband. He didn't know my son and his family were joining us. 1st of all they never had my reservation anywhere. And we were seated at the table for 2 instead of 6. So I had to tell my husband that our son is joining us thus totally ruining the surprise ! My whole evening was ruined!

I loved it, my family loved it. Overall a great experience. Would definitely recommend the place to have good Indian food.

I never knew Indian food can ever be cooked in such disgusting fashion. We paid $ 67 for the food that I will not even feed my worst enemy. Either their chief is mad or is from Mars. And they have the worst staff I have ever seen. The 1 star I gave is more than they deserve. How can someone cook such disgusting Biriyani!!! It was not even close to anything. Even IRCTC cooks cook better. And they serve biriyani at $1.

Went to this place for dinner and ordered yellow lentil, mattar panner, samosas and bhel puri. Except samosas everything else was really delicious!!!

Walked by there in early October and had a vegetarian meal. Food very good. I probably will return if in neighorhood.

We were here on a Monday afternoon for their Indian Lunch Buffet. Buffet consisted of Chana Masala, Saag / Paneer, Veg Korma, Plain Rice (though they have labelled as Jeera Pulao or something that I don't recall, it was plain and simple plain rice), Samosas, Mango Pudding and Rice Pudding. They had some non-vegetarian stuff that we did not pay attention to, since us being Vegetarians. They brought freshly made Naan Bread to our table. A big Thumbs Up for the fresh naan. They gave an option of Garlic or Plain Naan. We took the Garlic Naan. Wifey liked it, but I did not. It lacked the typical strong garlicky flavor that I am used to. We loved the Chana Masala. It was on the dry and spicier side. The Saag Paneer was OK. And the Korma was the worst tasting - completely bland. May be it is because we are used to the South Indian style typically spicier version of the Kuruma. Wifey liked the Mango Pudding a lot. I think the rice pudding has turned a bit rancid and spoilt. Though we did not complain to the Manager. The Samosas were cold and not fresh. Though the taste was good. It was filled with the Potato and Peas masala which was good. By the time we were about to leave around 1:45, few more people came in and they did prepare some fresh samosas, lucky them. If you have no other Indian options around, please give them a try. You may like it depending on your taste buds.

Visited here on Saturday, 28 July 2018, at about 12:20pm for the lunch buffet. I first tried to have dinner here the previous evening, but arrived too late (after 10pm closing). The buffet was quite good. It had Chicken Tikka, Chicken Tandori, Basmati rice, and a good salad that was fresh and colorful. My waiter provided me with plenty of naan that also was good. There were two desserts available. I had the Mango dessert (can't remember if it was a mousse, custard, or pudding). The place looked clean, and was fashionably decorated with a modern Indian motif. The lunch buffet was $15,00, which I thought was reasonable. If you like Indian food, I recommend visiting this restaurant.

Great restaurant- delicious food! Our waiters were exceptional, and professional. There were many items on the menu to choose from, and the food was served with minimal wait time. We will definitely go back.

I'm giving one point because It won't rate lower on here . Was shown to a table by a lacklustre waiter . Went to look at my menu and all the pages were stuck together . Took a while to get another menu , in between that another waiter tried to take our order . I had to say can I have a menu first ! We ordered a starter and 2 mains . I ordered a lamb biryani and hubby a chicken madras . My biryani came out as prawn . I asked the waiter to change it as I ordered lamb. He said I'll check your order , as in disbelieving me ? He eventually apologized after he realised I'd ordered lamb. My husband was still on his starter when his curry was brought out . The chicken was such bad quality he couldn't eat it . Finally my biryani came out , and although it tasted ok , we weren't interested at this point . The naan bread tasted like roti . I have never not left a tip before . It was bad enough paying for that awful meal at 80 dollars without adding a tip !! Avoid

Loved this restaurant. It was casual, yet elegant; jeans or dressy, and proximity was the best! Close to the civic center, gaslamp district, convention center. We parked in the Ralph's grocery store underground (two hours free), which is only one block away. But the food was the best! Half of our group of eight were meat eaters, the other half vegetarian and vegan. We could eat here for two weeks, every day, and not repeat a single yummy dish. I had the mango cumin soup. Such a strange listing, and I had to try. I was not disappointed. The onion naan was also amazing. There are seven different types of naan. Oh, and the pistachio ice cream was tasty and the serving huge!!!! The service was great! Everyone aims to please. And, we were pleasantly surprised that the waiter brought to our attention that gratuity had been added and to please NOT include a tip. That was really nice, because usually they want you to still had an amount even if gratuity is added.

Writing this directly from the restaurant ;) The food is awesome, the service is good. Tomato soup was the best I've ever tasted. Veggie byriani is tasty also. And don't miss their wholegrain tandoori roti.

We ate here after visiting the Midway and really fancied Indian food.... We sat down quickly as it was early and fairly empty still...Service and food were good, really good and everything came out quite quickly. The restaurant is a good size so plenty of choice and the menu selection is also very good. You can absolutely have a good feed here......well worth a visit The ONLY THING to be aware of is the meal sizes are massive, so order sensibly as you will find more food left on the table than usual.... The plates sizes are massive....

We had dinner there tonight and the only thing that I found negative was that their website and sign at the door said that they opened at 4:30, we went at 5:00 and did not get in until 5:30. That started us off on a negative note but we were able to recover from that although it is bad business. Once we got in, the atmosphere was very nice. The service was friendly and mostly attentive. Our food came fairly quickly. We really enjoyed our food. The spices of my dish were different than I am used to but it still was very good. I would suggest calling and making sure that they are open before you go.

Visited this place for dinner and thoroughly enjoyed an authentic Indian meal of Butter Lamb and Garlic Naan. I definitely recommend checking these guys out if you need a fix on some really good Indian cuisine!

Great place for Indian food . The terasse outside is a great place to eat. We will be back later, next trip in dan diego

After a number of local craft beers it did seem appropriate to finish off the evening with a curry. I have never had a terribly good curry in the US before. This was really the best I have had. The food was goo, pretty authentic (Considering) reasonable spiced (Though could have been spicier) and very ample in portion size. Accompanied by Indian lager, not Californian Craft Beer. It was so good we went back the next night. May have had a different chef the second night, maybe greater expectation or possibly more craft beer but didn't seem quite so good second time around. Would definitely go back.

After fighting off fruit flies all dinner the server brought our bill on a computer that she was learning how to use instead of a written bill. She took our credit card without our gift card. We then asked her to apply it and change the bill. She asked the manager and he would not do it saying he would not take it since we had already paid!!!! To provide excellent customer service all the manager would have had to do was void the transaction and redo it using our gift card. Instead he refused and we will NEVER go back again and I will post my negative experience everywhere. Not to mention that the food was under-seasoned and the quality was not as good as we had at prior visits which was also disappointing.

The food taste was ok. Service was poor. Even though the restaurant was more than half empty, it was hard to find any server. The server assigned to our table was always missing and started arguing rudely when we pointed the same to him. There was no manager or owner at the restaurant. Haven’t come across such rude staff at any other restaurant in Gas Lamp. I hope it was just one particular person and not all of them !!

I went to this restaurant the second time because a previous positive experience with an indian friend. However I am deeply disappointed this time as I was almost completely ignored for services. Sitting there for more than 15 min I saw no waiter/waitress showing up, I had to stop one just to get a glass of water and to get the menu. 70 min. past before my meal was brought. The Marsala chai I ordered was never served. Waiting in vein I wrapped up my own leftover and walked to the desk to request my bill. I never know who if any was my waiter/waitress during the two hours there. This restaurant does not deserve to be awarded stars were not for its food. Don't go there if you are alone who might be too insignificant to be served by their staff.

My meal was amazing - coconut pineapple curry chicken. However, my spouse got vindaloo - ordered "as hot as you can get it" and it was not very spicy. He was very disappointed, especially since vindaloo is already supposed to be super spicy. We also had an app of tandoori wings - they were not tandoori and not amazing. We had 3 beer between the two of us and 2 naan and our bill was $120 which is obscene. The beer were $12 each and the naan $5 each. And neither was that great. I gave it 3 stars because, like I said, my main course was amazing and technically we should've asked about prices for beer before ordering. But still, super overpriced for a basic dinner out - not to mention having to pay for parking downtown.

This is definitely a step up from the former restaurant in this location. The inside atmosphere is very relaxing and it is mostly busy take-out during the week. We have eaten in and gotten take away, and both were good. Nothing stands out as particularly exceptional but also everything was good. The okra was my favorite of our recent choices.

We were very happy with our meal at Royal India. We arrived at about 7 PM on a Monday night without reservations, but had no trouble getting a table. We skipped appetizers and went directly to the main course. We ordered the chicken tikka masala and the lamb saag (both with mild spices) along with rice and naan. Both dishes were very good, although the lamb saag was just a little spicier than "mild" would suggest. The portions were large enough that we could not finish the chicken or the lamb, and left a fair amount of rice and naan. Service was very good -- friendly and attentive. Several other reviews have mentioned that the prices were high at Royal India, and we'd agree. Items were $2-3 more than their equivalents at our favorite Chicago Gold Coast Indian restaurant. Still, if we were ever back in San Diego, we'd visit Royal India again.

We were looking for lunch after visiting Balboa Park and this one popped up on TA. The lunch buffet was very good and resonably priced (especially for gaslamp district). The butter chicken was good and lamb was tender. They even brought us a basket of Naan hot out of the oven. Definitely worth a visit.

They need more waitress. I saw just one running around. She din't even ask for dessert before she got our check. Very disappointed. Food was ok. Not the best. Service was ok.

Firstly, the food was very good so it’s a shame the service was atrocious. The “main” waiter who took orders was surly from the very beginning. No welcome, forgotten orders and when we left didn’t even have the courtesy to say goodbye. My 8 year old even commented on how bad it was. Shame for the chefs who delivered lovely food.

What elegant atmosphere and delicious food. The spice level was just as described so we really enjoyed the flavors. Adult beverages were available which was a great addition.

Enjoyable dining. We start with crispy. Delicious deep fried veggies, we follow with chicken tikka masala in a velvety sauce. Lamb biryani is also very nice. Wrap it in garlic nan with rice and it’s a good meal. Very good house red wine too.

We went in for lunch and had the buffet. The food was either lukewarm or cold. I informed the servers that the elements needed to be turned up. The samosas were ice cold, so they brought some new ones. We didn't bother eating them as we were both done with the restaurant. Eating lukewarm chicken isn't a good idea. As a result, both of us were ill after eating here. Should have taken heed that there were no other people eating.

This very pretty restaurant had wonderful food and good service. They were slow, and they let us relax and take our time during dinner. We were not rushed although the speed of glass lamp district normally encourages otherwise.

We were told this was a family owned restaurant and very good. We had eaten at another Indian restaurant a few days earlier and this didn't even come close. The service was horrible, the food came cold, it was not tasty, it was expensive, and the portion was small. This is the first time I had rice at an Indian restaurant which was not savory. Very disappointing!

We have never been to an Indian restaurant this bad. Food is horrible and service even worse. I personally think that food was just served hot from ready made packets. Nothing royal or Indian about this restaurant!

Stumbled upon Royal India while visiting gaslamp, SD. Best Indian food we've ever had! Incredible service love the ambience. 5 stars!

We stumbled upon this place while visiting Gas Town and decided to pop in for dinner. We sat at the floor tables, which were very comfortable. After chatting with the host we decided on the dinner for 2 special, which included two curries, rice and samosas. The food was plentiful and delicious. Rich traditional flavours. Highly recommend a visit.

I am an Indian and this is the worst food I ate in my life - uncooked and stale. Called management and was told that it was Frozen for few days hence could be the issue!!!

Stopped in for a Sunday Lunch Buffet. Service was quick and I liked the choice of plain or garlic nan delivers to your table. Items were all quite good but perhaps a bit limited. Gulab Jamun is on most buffets for dessert, would be nice here. Would go back.

We ate here as part of a "taste of San Diego" tour group, so our experience will differ from most. Our group arrived around lunch and were all seated together. We were able to sample the lunch buffet, which my husband and I found to be very tasty. We really enjoyed everything that we tried. We can't speak for service as we did not have a waiter, but decor was nice and we would definitely eat here again if in the area.

This restaurant is well located, the facilities are well appointed. The food is authentic and with great presentation. The staff and overall service was good, but the Friday that we went the have a single server for a large pool of tables, which delayed service somewhat. But the experience overall was very good. I do recommend the restaurant and will come back, Indian food is my favorite.

The waiter was very helpful when I was undecided about two dishes. Their food has a "spicy meter" from 1-10. I ordered a 4 and it was perfect. If you have friends scared about Indian food because it is spicy-hot, this is the place to bring them because you can adjust it. I'm a weiner and don't like it very hot...just a little. The samosas are excellent. I also ordered Punjabi Aloo which is potatoes in a delightful curry sauce. Perfect for dipping my onion Naan in. They have many flavors of Naan and I'd be excited to try more. I wish I would have come with more people so I could try more entrées at one time. I'll come back next time I'm in San Diego. It's on the way to my hotel from my conference venue. Perfect.

Even though their menu states some of their appetizers are made with chickpea flour... BEWARE they also add gluten flour, and according to the staff they can't make any of it without. I was sick for days after eating here. I did not connect the cause, because we travel often and Indian is usually a safe bet, especially when the menu specifically states chickpea flour. I went in to the restaurant again, mentioned I could not eat gluten as a joke and reason why I loved Indian food so much and was informed that every appetizer has gluten. They add it to everything. Blech! Why?! :( I asked the staff to go in the back and speak to the chef to confirm. Not only was it confirmed, but I was informed that menu was deliberately misleading.

Went to Royal India on the recommendation from the hotel’s concierge. The menu had a lot of selections and seemingly could accommodate anyone’s taste. The food was good but not spectacular. Noisy restaurant due to misbehaved children. Convenient to the Gas Lamp District.

Good quality indian restaurant in the gaslamp district, I asked for my curry to be extra hot and it wasn't as spicy as I wanted but decent quality, my wife's Korma was a little thin on sauce, the Nans and rice were good, very good pale ale draft they have on tap, this doesn't get a 5 because of the price, san diego is expensive to eat out so its probably in line with what other places charge but to justify the price, this would have to be outstanding and I rate it very good.

Very nice Indian meal! Enjoyed the onion bhaji appetizers and had the vegetarian aloo gobi as a main course - really delicious. My husband had the lamb rojan josh and also enjoyed it very much! If ever we get back to San Diego...we will be sure to go again (from just north of Toronto Ontario)

Excellent service— delicious lunch buffet. Garlic naan was right off tandoori. Chicken tiki Marsala and vegetable curry were my favorites. The cold chickpea salad was wonderful, as were the spicy dipping sauces.

Nipped in to the Royal India Restaurant for dinner with business colleagues and found the restaurant to be a gem. Excellent dishes with a range of heat; tasty naan; great service and friendly staff. I highly recommend the Royal India!

Went on St Patrick’s day because all of the Irish pubs were packed, and it turned out to be a great decision. My wife had the Vindaloo chicken and I had a similar curry butter chicken entree, and both were outstanding. The wait staff also was friendly and helpful. Finally, suggest you try the pistachio ice cream for dessert. The single portion was delicious and plenty for both of us.

Went for a group dinner with colleagues. Very good service (as always in California....) - good choice of food. Leaving in the UK, I think we're spoiled for excellent Indian food so the Royal India, though serving good traditional Indian food can't really compete with my local! Large portions!

We enjoyed the food. Unfortunately, the service was as bad as we’ve ever had at any restaurant anywhere, which really tarnishes the experience. There is basically one waiter for the entire restaurant, which is a decent-sized restaurant. Little surprise that one waiter cannot effectively service 15-20 tables, some of which have as many as 6-8 people. I ordered a drink, which half an hour later hadn’t arrived. I reminded the waiter, but half an hour later (by which time I was done with the food), there still was no drink. I asked the waiter to cancel the drink and take it off the bill. I asked for the bill, which 15 minutes later still had not arrived. I went up to the front of the restaurant to pay the bill, and of course the drink was still listed on the bill. It goes without saying that no one comes around to refill water, check if there’s anything you need. This could be a good restaurant if they invested in appropriate staffing. Don’t go here unless the only thing that matters to you is the food and you couldn’t care less about the service.

A most satisfying repast and excellent food as well. Royal India is a perfect spot to enjoy an early dinner before walking to the Padres game at nearby Petco Park.

We just finished dinner here and I had to post a review. The service was amazing! Our server was Manoj and he was awesome! Thank you so much for the great service, Manoj! They are very Covid conscientious. My husband got the chicken Tikka masala and I got the veggy Tikka masala. Both came with a samosa and yummy naan. Everything was sooooo... good! We will definitely return when we return to San Diego.

Absolutely awful food quality. Only a place like this could make Indian food boring. Simply imagine what the buffet at a retirement home would taste like.

Extremely overpriced for what you get. Food was cold. If you know anything about Indian food, you will not like this place. Naan bread was undercooked and doughy. Curries had a distinct taste of citric acid, which made me feel quite unwell after eating. Avoid.

My wife and I have eaten here quite a few times and have never been dissatisfied. It is such an elegant restaurant yet affordable. They have such a variety of foods here, you can choose which type of meat you want with your dish. Or you can go vegetarian. I am partial to lamb curries and my wife like the chicken tikka masala. The service is very good. The restaurant is very clean and beautifully decorated. It is downtown so parking is a problem, best to just go for a lot and walk a ways.

The food was really delicious. The service super friendly and the prices quite reasonable. I strongly recommend!

We’ve been here three times before and after the pandemic and it’s survived. With the same first rate food and service. We have two appetizers, one is delicious deep fried vegetables. There is cauliflower, zucchini, potatoes, mushrooms: each perfectly golden and perfectly crispy. The samosas as well are outstanding, the best we’ve eaten.Something makes them a standout. Our main is a chicken specialty in a deep brown sauce with vegetables. I doubt that anything you order here wouldn’t be first rate. The waiter reads the people at the table, not intruding into our conversation, patiently waiting and watching for an opportune opening.

Being the only indian place in the Gaslamp area, I was hoping for some quality indian food. However was extremely disappointed with the food and the knowledge of the staff. The main course dishes were very watered down and lacked flavor. Plus the place is very overpriced. Do not recommend.

We stopped by here before seeing a performance at the Lyceum Theater and were pleasantly surprised at the decor, the quality of the food, and particularly the service. The wait staff were very thoughtful and attentive and made sure that the food was to our liking. They even surprised us with a special treat. We would definitely go back again.

The lunch buffet is quite good value and tasty. The food is reportedly halal, which made my muslim friends happy. Unfortunately, they are bad at dealing with allergies. My friend who is allergic to onions tried to order a dish without onions, but that was not possible to order. Any good restaurant should be able to make a dish without onions if only there is a wish to do so. So beware allergy people, they are not good at handling such requests.

Maybe I've been spoilt by eating at many good Indian restaurants around the world. The decor certainly looked nice but the food failed to impress. The chicken korma had cheap gristly pieces of chicken in it and both chicken dishes gave the impression of pre-cooked chicken being put into a sauce at the last minute. I wasn't impressed by the glimpses I could see of the kitchen either-not as clean as I'd have expected. The mango lassis were very good but unfortunately we were plagued by small fruit flies shortly after they arrived which proved irritating and suggested there was dodgy fruit somewhere nearby. All in all rather disappointing, especially given the cost-double what I'm used to paying for this type of meal in the UK. Look elsewhere would be my advice.

We just finished a delicious meal with excellent cocktails & superlative service marred only by an 18” long black hair in the basmati rice..... could have been worse. They did apologize...... The shrimp curry however was very good...

This is a good Indian Restaurant with an extensive menu and all the favourites. Service and atmosphere is wonderful. For those with a taste for spices the level can be chosen but the hot, medium, and mild are on the less agressive of those terms. The food is delicious and portions good. If you have not tried it, order a Mango Lassi which makes a delicious start to the meal and a refreshing drink throughout.

During our trip to Los Angeles and San Diego, CA over the Thanksgiving weekend, we decided to order dinner from Royal India, as it was closer to the Coronado area we had visited prior to this. This restaurant is right in the heart of downtown San Diego, CA. We reached around 7PM and the area was crowded, but luckily we found a spot in front of the restaurant. After parallel parking, I decided to order takeout as I find it convenient to cover a lot of ground while the kids are eating, especially when we have a lot of ground to cover. I usually stick to the staple foods - Veggie Biriyani, Chana Masala and Naan, and this time was no different. The restaurant is very posh and the menu is very expensive. The restaurant was packed, however we got our food in about 20 minutes in well packed containers. The food was piping hot, and seasoned perfectly. The naan was fresh, the chana melted in our mouths, and the vegetable biriyani was cooked to perfection. This is a good restaurant, and if in the area, will visit again.

We went there based on google reviews that suggested it was good. Main points below: 1. We arrived, and within 5 minutes of ordering we had both starters and mains sitting on our table. So much for an evening out, as we both wolfed down the food before it went cold. 2. Fruit flies EVERYWHERE. At one point we counted 3 on our bottle of wine. Disgusting. 3. We went for a bottle of the house white. I had reservations as the cheapest bottle was $39 - for which I expect a fantastic wine. It was OK, in a restaurant maybe something I'd expect to pay $25-$30 for. 4. The starter was literally thrown at our table with no explanation of what the dish was or what the dips were, leaving us to guess. In general the waiters were disinterested and the restaurant was not busy. 5. Insanely overpriced. We ordered popadoms (2 tiny popadoms), 2 x cheapest mains (Chicken Jalfreizi and butter chicken at $18 a pop) and their cheapest bottle of wine and (incl tax/VAT) we were faced with a bill of $95 excl tip, for a 15 minute meal. Needless to say in other San Diego restaurants we've visited and had a fantastic experience we've paid a fraction of that price. What a waste of money and valuable holiday time!

We used a restaurant.com coupon here. The food was a little higher priced than I typically would choose but with the discount it was reasonable. Three of us ordered different dishes and shared them family style all of the dishes were tasty and distinct in flavor. They did, however, all look very similar and we lost track of which was which. When we tasted them we could tell the difference. We also ordered a mixed naan basket that included a nice variety of breads. I would definitely recommend this place. The service was good.

Good food good service good portion sizes. Lovely Nann bread worth a visit. Would eat here again. ...

Food was very good. I had chicken butter curry and loved it. Service was very attentive, but we felt a little rushed. Prices were decent. Location and outdoor seating was very nice as well. Would return.

Although non-vegetarians, we opted for the excellent Bengan Bhartha as an entree. It was a delicious mix of roasted eggplants, garlic, ginger, herbs and spices. Served over Bismati Rice, it set our tongue a'tingling. We balanced it with bowls of mango soup that combined sweetness with the tang of cumin and black peppercorns.

Great Indian restaurant on Market Street. Really good food at reasonable prices. Lovely decor and excellent service.

I and my wife were looking for a decent restaurant in SD downtown to eat during the thanksgiving eve of 2016. After searching, we found this place. Its in the heart of downtown in the Gasalamp and few blocks from Seaport. We ordered Lamb Rogan Josh, Chicken Kadai and Veg Samusas. The Samusas were very fresh and tasty. Loved their Rogan Josh and Kadai that come with basmati rice. The place is clean and the servers are really nice. We ordered medium plus spicy, which was not spicy at all. If you are spicy eater, request for more spicy. The server was helpful and provided us additional hot sauce. Bad side: 1) We also ordered Paratha, which was soggy with oil. The chef I guess does not know how to make a paratha. He/she burnt it. I saw few other tables returning their Paratha as they were not eatable. 2) For an indian restaurant, this place is way pricy. I would not go there again only because it is overpriced. Though their food is tasty, you can get the same quality with lot cheaper price.

I don’t eat a lot of Indian food, so I’m far from being an expert but I do enjoy a good curry. The food here was just OK. My husband and I came for lunch and the place was empty. The service was good but the food wasn’t anything spectacular.

The food was prepared very well. It was hot and fragrant. Despite other reviewers comments, the service was excellent. I had the lamb Rogin Josh, Samosa and garlic naan. They were all excellent.

Apart from the fact that our server knew nothing about Indian food, the rest of the experience was outstanding. We explored various parts of the menu, and at every turn the food was delicious. One hint - they tend to bring all the courses as they finish them in the kitchen. So, if you want to eat at a less than hectic pace or you want to savor your soup before your main course arrives, I'd suggest ordering each course individually. On the other hand, if you are in rush, you can get in and out quite quickly.

I really like Indian food and unfortunately, live in a city where I don’t have access to an Indian restaurant. There are several options in San Diego’s Gas Lamp District and none had glowing reviews one way or the other. I was a little skeptical based upon some of the reviews; however, I decided to give it a try. I went there for lunch with three other people as it is about a 15m walk from the San Diego Convention Center. Two of us had the buffet ($15) and the other two ordered off the menu. Everybody was happy and didn’t have any complaints. Surprisingly, when going to post this review, I realized that this is where I went four years ago. I really enjoyed the food then too.

Found the restaurant to be very nice , the ambiance was very nice with paintings and statue related to india. Food was nice. I had a Vegetarain colleague of mine travelling along and could find pure veg dishes here.

Highlight was the Kofta in a spicy sauce. Good nans. Paneer tikka was surprisingly a bit burnt and insufficiently spiced/marinated. Combined with the ambience and service, this is a a good option for friends and family getting together for a meal.

The paneer tikka masala was delicious! Staff was friendly and attentive and let us choose the spiciness for each entree on a scale of 1-5. Restaurant was nice and quiet despite construction next door. This was a nice alternative to the loud sports bars for dinner. A little pricey but overall great experience.

A lot of restaurants to choose from. If it's Indian you are looking for, go no further. Beware you get what you ask for. I said medium spice, and it was every bit of that! Baby, it hurts so good . . . .

Ambience was good. Food was good. Restaurant is very big and spacious. Parking is an issue. It took about 30 minutes to find street parking. Overall experience was good.

Great place for a lunch buffet. Went just after 1pm during a weekday with friends so it was not as crowded. The staff was very helpful answering our questions. Food tasted good.

We were SO looking forward to visiting the restaurant because of the good reviews. However, when we arrived Sunday 2:15pm for a late buffet lunch, we were terribly disappointed. The buffet selection was poor and all dried up. Just two curries (one being a 'mince' curry - how lazy can you get?) does not constitute a buffet. The overall selection was poor and unappealing so we did not risk it. Heaven knows how long the curries had been there for because one was pretty dried up. The waiter with us was embarrassed straight away because he offered to get a new curry but we thought that if even allowing that to be there in the first place was an example of the care being taken overall, then we wouldn't risk it. The restaurant was not busy when others that we walked past (and eventually went back to) were heaving (game day in San Diego). That speaks volumes in itself. I cannot recommend this restaurant.

One of the best Indian restaurants I have visited in all my trips and when I am in SD, I always eat her at least ones of twice. Tailor made menu´s and good advice. Everything is possible and all for a reasonable price..... I´ll be back!

Very nice food, rich in taste. I had the veggie tikka masala. Staff were a bit slow sometimes but very friendly. We enjoyed our dinner. I like a bit of spice so went for medium heat. Found it very mild so would up the spice next time. Nice rice and naan.

Found this restaurant okay but felt they rushed you with the courses. We had pakora and chicken starters which were nice. Then had chicken jalfrezi and a tikka dish which came before the dishes were removed. They were quick to fill the water glass up but felt we were in and out before the food hit our stomachs . Not sure I would go back .

Very accommodating and great food We made reservations on line They were very busy but Raj was very nice and sat us asap Food was awesome Very flavorful Will visit again when in SD we were party of 7 and they accommodated very eclectic party with varied restrictions

Came here after being recommended by some local Indians. Was pretty pricey, but understandable considering the location.Nice interior decor, and good selection in the bar as well. I would recommend the Chicken Tikka which is generally a popular dish, but if you get it extra spicy, it hits the spot. And the Chicken Pakora for appetizers are a must.

Personnel are very friendly! The food was delicious! The dining room is nicely laid out and tables nicely set with white linen. We were well taken care of.

The restaurant was full of Indian guests so we thought the food must be excellent. It was adequate, a choice of spice level we went medium but should have gone spicy as it’s really wasn’t ! Service was quick and helpful . Menu choice was good, chicken seemed to be of adequate quality.

From UK living in Dubai and been travelling last three weeks by car with family of 4 from LA,and everywhere inbetween up to Vancouver, stayed in 5 star, stayed in comfort inns, it's been a treat, ate fine dining along the way and typical burger joints and liked them all until the Royal Indian in San Diego went and spoiled it. They advertise opening until 10pm. I turned up with family at 9.25pm Monday August 26th - Walked in said hi and the guy says we are closing, there must have been 15-20 tables in the restaurant, all empty. I said but you close at 10pm , "sorry if you want take away we can help" so we left. As I was walking out I thought let me just ask to speak to the manager, so I walked back in. The gentlemen I approached advised me he was the manager and I said how come you are closing, "we are going home and the kitchen is closing" i said "but it's only 9.30pm, how can you not serve us"? "we have families to go home to" came the polite but weird reply. To be fair, after i explained that wanting go home when a customer is walking into your restaurant 35mins before closing is not good for business or reputation, he tried to strike a deal: "if you order in 5 minutes" he would serve the family. My wife decided not too take the deal. Turned out to be a good call in the end as we ended up at Sab kai Thai Kitchen around the corner, excellent service stayed well past 10.30pm and really enjoyed the food and service. San Diego hospitality has been great and the city has been our favourite on the trip - it's stunning and we won't let the lack of hospitality of the Royal Indian sour our positive experience of San Diego, but just to let fellow travellers and foodies know, the service and approach to customers is terrible, although we cannot speak for their food,........ cos they didn't give us any.

Good restaurant, we were there on wednesday, so not a busy day. The service is good, food good as well and really abundant. Easy to find a parking and good for couple and friends.

The dining rooms here are beautifully decorated with an Indian motif. We love Indian food and this is certainly among the best. We were attending a conference and ate there two nights in a row with two different sets of friends and they all thought it was very good, too. The rooms were full both nights and the servers were extremely polite, prompt, and helpful. We will definitely return at the next chance.

Visited with 4 vegans. All repeat customers. I enjoyed the lamb curry. Lots of rice to go with the mains.

Good Location. Pleasing ambience. Welcoming staff. Good service. We were not hungry but wanted to visit an Indian restaurant on our Trip to San Diego few days back. Being vegetarian ordered Paneer Karhai and Dal Tadka with butter Nan. Food was piping hot , freshly made and tasty. Enjoyed the dinner.

Good food and service. The breads are well made and the rice is actually Basmati. Good selection of Indian beers. Just a suggestion- change to the hot green peeper rather than the sliced jalapenos served as condiments. Overall worth a visit .

We have tried a menu which offers 35 dolar, everything was great, garlic naan especially amazing, i reccomend this place✌️

Visited Royal India during my trip to San Diego. It's a decent restaurant however our experience was marred by super spicy food and we ended up leaving almost everything. Tip to traveller - Be careful about what you ask. We asked them to make our food Indian spicy and they added hell lot of chilli flakes over the actual preparation .

Great restaurant. Authentic Indian Food. Great Biryani and a wide menu selection to choose from. Moderately priced and conveniently located.

We were in San Diego from North County for an evening of dining and to see the play "Rent" at the Civic Theatre on Friday evening. There were four of us --two couples total, and we did have reservations for 5:30pm. When we first arrived, the place was almost empty, however it filled up quickly after that and when we left almost all the tables were filled. Lots to choose from on the menu. I ordered off the portion of the menu called Royal Curries and had the Mango/Pineapple Curry, Spicy Level 5, a tad over Medium. It was phenomenal. THE BEST!! Spicy YES, and not "take my breathe away spicy"! The portions come in medium size white "gravy bowl" style serving dishes and there's plenty to share so each person in our group ordered a different type of curry and we all shared. And of course, there was plenty of rice and we ordered the Garlic Nan as well. The Mango Lasse drink was "to live for". Service was exquisite (including the new gal they were training) and the ambiance fit for royalty! We will DEFINITELY be back! We were able to work off our meal with a brisk walk to the Civic Theatre! Thank you! Ohh so good! 👍Even just writing this, I'm ready to go back TODAY!😍

I was in San Diego with my family and was craving for indian food. I was recommended this restaurant by the courtyard Marriott concierge. The ambiance of the restaurant was really good and when the food came (i ordered Chicken Makhani, Madras Curry and punjabi aloo) and it was below average. They lacked in salt and spices and may be my expectation was not very high. Certainly not authentic.

Ordered delivery during San Diego Comic Con. There was so much food-we could have made it into three meals! Everything was very good-I stuck to basics with chicken tikka masala and pakoras. The pakoras were soggy by the time the food was delivered, but still tasty. Very good vegetarian and vegan options as well.

It was an all you can eat buffet and it was wonderful, absolutely delicious!!! Great service, tasty food and a totally wonderful experience!!!

Went to Royal India for lunch with the family . The interior of the restaurant is beautiful . Just found it a bit expensive but the food was really good .

I eat at this restaurant on Feb 4th with two friends. Service was excellent and the food amazingly good. Wine choice was ok and prices very reasonable. They went the extra mile when I realised I did not have my receipt for the meal. I called them 5 days later and they spent 10 minutes with me on the phone and then emailed it to me. Great after service. We will go again when in town!

I have been to many Indian Food Restaurants around the United States. Mostly for lunch buffets, and this is one of the best! The food selection was good and the garlic Naan was superb. Staff was friendly and efficient!

We were really hoping for some good Indian food, and were disappointed. The service was very bad, and there were not many vegetarian options. We took lunch buffet, the staff refused to re-fill the buffet saying it was 2:30. (We came in at 2:20, and they did not tell us they would not re-fill at 2:30!) We later ordered vegetable biriyani, which another table had also ordered. They left without eating there's so one of the waiters served us their biriyani saying he gave it to them by mistake. We then, told him we did not want a fresh one and soon after left.

Absolutely fantastic! After being deeply disappointed in another Indian restaurant not far from this one, I decided try Royal India. I am so glad that I did! As someone of Indian heritage, I can attest that the food here is quite good and totally authentic. You won't go wrong by dining at Royal India.

Wonderful spicy great variety on the menus Lamb Chicken fish all prepared beautifully Curry spices very healthy Vegetarian dishes so healthy

I loved loved loved the food here! We were a party of 12 and between us we ordered malai kofta, aloo matter, daal tadka, paneer tikka masala, bhel, spicy naan, roti, black daal, Jeera rice and onion salad! They also made a delicious plate of sauteed vegetables for my 22 month old that he relished!! Highly highly recommend this place!!!!

On a visit to San Diego, we stopped here for dinner. We ordered the Tikki Masala, a side salad, and an order of hummus. The food was good and the service was attentive. If you are choosing to eat at an Indian restaurant, you probably like spicy food. If you are a first timer, you might want to err on the side of a lower spice number. ...say, a 3-4. We ordered our dish a 7 on the scale of 1 to 10 for heat. While I was fine, my husband was bright red and sweating. Ambience could be improved with dimmer lighting. It was rather bright and cafeteria looking.

We picked this restaurant because of their status as a dining miles location and also because of their participation on restaurant.com. It's location in the gas lamp district was convenient as well. The service was incredibly quick and also attentive, which we appreciated, and at the same time we did not feel rushed. My husband ordered the chicken tikka masala and a sweet lassi (the two items he uses to rate all Indian restaurants). He thought the lassi was the best he has had, nice and thick, but the tikka masala was average, nothing special. I ordered a mango pineapple chicken curry, which was very good, and a chai, which I would recommend. Garlic naan was also average - good, but not the best I have had. Of note to us was that the menu specified they would charge $3 for additional rice - one of the waiters asked if it would be okay if he brought more rice, and I said thank you. We wondered if we'd be charged, but we were not. Another waiter said to let them know and they could bring more rice at any time. I assume this specification on the menu must not be their practice, which I appreciate, but it can be concerning when specified on the menu.

Located in a prime location...gas lamp area...few steps away from my hostel where we stayed. All were indian staff...nice ambience. Food is fantastic...as its like home. A bit rich..but thts how Indians like it. E had biriyani...pulao...chicken prep & dal. Price a bit high..but it seemed obvious when u get authentic indian dish at beach town besides Atlantic i.e San Diego. Pretty sure evryone will like the food at Royal.

My family eats India food quite often but this menu had several new choices. The restaurant is in the heart of the Gaslamp district in downtown San Diego. A beautiful restaurant and has been recognized as best Indian Cuisine in San Diego which I agree with. More different "Nan" breads than I've ever seen and the food was delicious. I had a new dish - Meat Curry Specialties (Chicken Coconut Pineapple). It was quite good and an excellent choice given I normally eat the chicken tikka masala. I recommend this restaurant if you looking for excellent Indian food in San Diego.
Best Indian food we've ever had
It was a busy Friday night in the Gaslamp Quarter but entering this restaurant -- Royal India, our first visit -- we felt like we had stepped into an excellent eatery. Starched tablecloths and napkins, excellent service. The food was outstanding. Since we're from Minnesota, we ordered only "mild" for the spices and the dishes were multi-layered in their flavors. 90% of the patrons were South Asian, which for us confirmed that we were enjoying authentic cuisine. I wish we lived closer to this restaurant!!
