Not dissapointed

By juan m |

I had the lobster taco as an appetizer and it was fabulous. Real grilled lobster. My main course was the seafood curry ramen. Great flavor but to spicy for me. Next time I will eliminate the jalapeno. The mussels were not too fresh so I did not eaten. Love the place.i will definitely be back to try other plates.

Interesting concept

By John S |

Went here for dinner with family while visiting Houston. Very diverse menu that seemed to cater to people with dietary restrictions. Food was good, but not as good as I expected given the creative menu.

Healthy option but pricey

By Dusten M |

Most of the food is fairly healthy, they cater to the paleo crowd pretty well. Service for us was ok, I can't complain. I had the tuna and snapper tacos and really enjoyed them. My dining partner had the ahi tuna salad and wasn't a big fan of it. Parking spaces are limited if the area gets busy, as it is a small place sharing the building/parking with a bank. I think it is a little pricey but keep in mind the ingredients used are also more expensive. For example with the tacos.. They use almond flour tortillas... The crowd is definitely in the higher socioeconomic echelon ie real housewives of Houston.. But the food seems to be good, atleast the tacos were.

Spicy. Paleo. Fresh.

By Mo C |

Our first visit. The food was excellent. Ingredients fresh and the staff friendly. Love the decor. The menu was a delight for Paleo followers, but brims with seafood, spicy foods, fresh greens - something for everyone. The brussel sprouts are amazing. Only word of warning - the flat bread, whilst delicious, was more like a pizza - not flat at all and with a fluffy crust - served as an appetizer but pretty large! Love it. We will be back.

Awesome😍

By Meeklymilli |

This place is nothing short of fantastic. Paleo friendly and DELICIOUS food with super friendly and knowledgeable staff. Their dessert selection tray truly is a sight to behold (as is their giant pork chop, The Big Sexy 😉). Had a brilliant family feast here, it's a must try in Houston.

To fit Any Lifestyle Foodie

By weddingmoons |

Great menu-Paleo, Vegetarian, or Beef Eater-it is all here with the fresh salads and vegetables to make it all come together. Great plates-filled with food. you won't leave hungry that's for sure.

I LOVE THIS PLACE!

By adrenalinejunkie2000 |

I HAVE to come to this restaurant every time I'm in Houston - everything is delicious! The tacos are so tasty and full of flavor, the salads are amazing and full of all sorts of goodies and not drenched in dressing. And the main courses are fantastic. I haven't had anything on the menu I don't want to order again and again. I really wish the owner would do a cookbook - I"d be first in line!! Go here - you will not regret it and you'll enjoy EVERY bite!! Plus the servers are really nice and the whole experience is very enjoyable!

Excellent restaurant to visit for lunch

By S.J. |

Our server was very gracious with our group of ladies! We met at 11:30 and stayed until 3:00. During that time we enjoyed our lunch and desserts and nonstop refilling of water and tea. I had the chicken salad from the lunch menu (wish I could remember the name); it was phenomenal! Last time I dined there I had the tacos. They were good, but I am so glad I decided to try something new. For dessert, you can't miss ordering their white chocolate bread pudding. I'm so glad I split it with a friend. It was so delicious I would have eaten it all otherwise!

Fantastic!

By Melissa L |

Original menu with so many inspired options including healthy ones and Paleo. Even Paleo desserts that are fantastic. The crab tower is amazing. I almost skipped it since a million places offer this but it was sooo good.

Everything Superb

By AdventrGrl |

Lunch date with my man - it was pretty busy and parking hard to come by but once we parked, we were seated immediately with our reservation. Ambience is nice, service is great. Waiters recommendations were on point! Ordered the crab tower appetizer that was both pretty and delicious! My chicken sandwich was bursting with flavor. Cajeta cake was tasty though a bit dry and vanilla ice cream had amazing flavor as if homemade. Everything on the menu was great! Good prices at lunch time too. Give it a try!

Great spot for fusion food

By Timothy R |

An interesting selection of fusion dishes with some healthy options. Nice ambiance and a good bar menu. Worth a try if you like tacos, spicy food, paleo or you enjoyed Ruggles Green.

Eat well!

By Jeanna007 |

Can't go wrong with the amazingly fresh fish entrees on the menu. Check out their interesting paleo portions as well as the cocktails!

Worse than I thought

By 962adid |

I don’t recommend this place at all. The food is terrible and their service is worse. Their menu is a waste of time and their prices are on the high side for low quality food. Neither I or my friends returned to that place ever since our first visit. Don’t waste your time or money. Don’t even bother. This place is not worth a penny. This is the bottom line.

Best Brunch ever!

By lgwvirginia |

We were visiting friends in Houston for the rodeo and picked Ruggles based solely on reviews...and completely lucked out! Very possibly the best brunch ever - swank space, fabulous service and wonderful food and drinks. so many folks stopped by to check on us, including the (charming!) floor manager and the chef himself! We had so much fu, and and the food & drinks were so good we threatened to come back for dinner! Make it a point to try this place - we'll be back.

Average

Molzan Does it Again

By davemh333 |

This Upper Kirby casual has been open just three months but is already doing big business, probably because the Indian-influenced food is absolutely stellar. I highly recommend the lamb and goat cheese pizza, highlighted by Indian spices. Fresh fish is great also, with a wonderful salmon dish. I'm not quite clear on the paleo concept, which has become really trendy, but I'm very clear on how fantastic the paleo tandoori zataar chicken is. Moist and flavorful, it's one of the best chicken dishes I've had in Houston. One caveat, this place fills up with young hipper-than-thou trend-followers, so if you don't like crowds and noise you need to come during off hours. There's also a nice outdoor are to sit and eat, something sadly scarce in Houston.

Too crowded & over rated

By majed h |

We went there last week with few friends for Christmas party, even though we had reservation they made us wait 45 min for our table. The place was packed & too loud and the food was good but too expensive for the quality & the quantity. I don't think we are going to give it one more visit any time soon!

Surprisingly Good Food

By Pompom B |

The menu is interesting. We ordered a variety of starters, all delish. Main courses, our favourite, the tacos, simply wonderful. The desserts sublime, paleo yummy. Made with yoghurt. Only downside is the completely untrained but delightful staff. Necessary to provide constant reminders of missing forks, napkins, drinks, etc. Not knowledgeable about much of the menu or the chef's background which is impressive: classic French.

Terrific and interesting preparation

By mlhopps |

Love this restaurant! Food is fabulous and interesting-especially love the scallops in a box and the fried oysters with caviar.

Better than I expected

By Mansfieldnanny |

We are not people who like spicy and this was a very good experience . We had fish and chips, avocado chicken bacon sandwich , a pizza and salad . We were pleased that all the beautiful dishes presented to us tasted outstanding !

Dinner with wife

By timothysI1880UW |

First time to eat here. Appetizer “crab tower” amazing. Dinner was excellent great presentation. Mixed drink was pomegranate mojito full size glass. Definitely recommend for Paleo diet.

LOVE AT FIRST BITE!!!! Who knew "body-friendly" food could be this good!!!!

By Sandra M |

Dined there two nights ago with my sister. We like to order two meals and share/taste. AND, this is not just a keto friendly place - all types of goodies on the menu! We both immensely enjoyed eating here. The Keto Carbonara Pasta (Zero Carb Miracle Noodles, Bacon, High Fat, Parmensan Manchego Cream Sauce, Black Pepper.) So very very delicious. And, the Snapper was off the charts - ( Keto Lemon-Bacon Snapper, Snapper Tossed with Lemon, Bacon, Coconut Oil, Butter and Fresh Herbs With a side of Veggies.) Honestly, we have not had fish this good since a trip to Italian coastline 2 yrs ago. Served appealingly, promptly and with friendly server, Natalie. Help with wine choices and sample. Owner, Bruce stopped by to see if we were happy with our meals. Had to try the keto friendly carrot cake. I have longed for "good cake" and this is IT! Such a good experience. Will dine here again and happily recommend to all.

Excellent paleo food!

By Jen T |

They absolutely know about food preferences, allergies, sensitivities, protocols. All of them! Paleo, Keto, Whole 30, AIP - you’re covered! You won’t be disappointed! Flavors are delicious. Presentation is very appealing. Portions are definitely enough to fill you to the brim. Thank you for a fantastic dinner, and thank you Paul for excellent service!!

If you want COVID-19, this

By Donald William R |

If you want COVID-19, this is the place to go. Booked a Patio table, upon arriving (2 minutes early), was told no tables available on the patio. Was sat inside in where Ruggles clearly didn’t get the memo on social distancing. It was shoulder to shoulder with strangers. The place should be shut down. If I received a call before saying no table on patio, I would have cancelled. I’m not bitter, but this is definitely the last time I’ll cross the door threshold in this place again.

I really wanted to like this place but felt uncomfortable just being here

By trymahjong |

I guess I'm not the target audience here-- My dinning companion has mobility issues and there is no handicapped parking space near the entrance, nor is there a ramp-just a step up curb. This place is charmingly decorated but cramped. Plus bringing the toddler wouldn't have been a good idea. There is a lot of crowd noise. It is expensive. Still most of the entrees I saw, the pizza, salad and burger were huge and enough for two to share. I shared the turkey burger ($15.) but was a bit put off by the waiter wanted to make sure he had heard the word "share" this after he wanted to double check we only wanted "water" And so our strentch of feeling uncomfortable began. The turkey burger had that french, Indian/Asian, American fusion thing-- but the spice combo didn't really scream "delectable". It took over 20 minutes to arrive at our table. The sweet potatoes were nice-- It's hard to believe There is a lot of talk about "Paleo" at this restaurant. The waiter asked if I was aquainted with the "Ruggles Brand" especially this "Paleo" thingy -------weeelll uh hmmm I ate at the original over on Westheimer in the 70's?. . . ? It was so loud I couldn't really understand what the waiter said after I anwsered him. But for all that money I didn't come away as a "Paleo" convert. The whole thing felt awkward for my dinning companion and myself---sigh

Amazing food.

By NicolePG123 |

I loved the food here. I didn't know nor care about the Paleo part, I just thought the food was amazing. Very tasty and fresh tasting. I ordered the fried oysters with caviar and the tacos (snapper & ribs). Both were so delicious. I will definitely return. The atmosphere was fun. I loved the decor. My only complaint is the parking. My new favorite restaurant In Houston.

EXCELLENT FOOD AND SERVICE

By Elmtree3610 |

Visiting in the area. A friend took me here for lunch. We ate outside on their patio. Server was more than excellent. Atmosphere was relaxed. Food was very special. I am a non-meat diner. The server had them prepare a vegetable plate. It was so delicious. My mouth was so happy with all the wonderful favors. Will go again.

purely, simply excellent

Lunch after med center appointments

By Apert |

My daughter and I decided to stop here. Ruggles montrose use to be my favorite restaurant and now being keto/paleo I heard they had a lot of options. The menu was amazing..lots to choose from. The food was amazing. The only thing is I dont like spicy and it was too spicy for me. My daughter had the butternut soup anf salad. The salad was spicy.. soup was perfect. My fajitas were amazing but I was having to drink a ton of water to be able to eat them. The keto dessert I got was lemon cheesecake was to die for. We will be back but ask for no spicy stuff ,)

Healthy food

By Yusdel R |

If you are along a healthy life style this is the restaurant you must visit in Houston. Offering a lot of paleo and Keto options on the menu and top quality food and service. My only complaint is they haven't a keto friendly hamburger.

Such Good Food!

By Suzann M |

This was my second time here although I live in Austin. My daughter lives in Houston. We went for lunch. Everything we had was excellent. Don’t let the word “paleo” scare you! My Paleo Short Rib Taco was filled with so many delicious flavors. I don’t know what the taco shell was mad from but it was grilled and crispy. This was the first place I ever had Roasted Brussel Sprouts and we had them again and they didn’t disappoint. The Market Salad was huge and filled with wonderful surprises and a delicious dressing. The desserts are not to be believed. We shared Charlottes Web – brownie crumbs, a very light coffee mousse, and whipped cream And there was more than plenty for both of us. I took home a piece of Coconut Mango Cake, and each bite was perfection. I know there are incredible restaurants all over Houston, but it would be difficult not to go back to Ruggles Black next time I visit.

Just terrible!

By Mark M |

I am a big fan of this restaurant and go frequently. I love the diverse and spicy menu and the food is consistently well prepared. Until last week when I ordered dinner through Doordash", a food delivery service. the short rib was as hard wood.....and tasted the same. the rice was syrupy sweet - inedible!! I suggest you visit in person to avoid this type of experience.

A Highly Unique Experience

By Pass-N-Through |

July 28, 2016 - 8:00pm - When you walk through the door you find the atmosphere unassuming, the staff was cordial and friendly without being syrupy. They weren't trying to sell me. They were attentive without being pushy. The customers were dressed casual and well, but there were no customers in jeans and cut-offs. The dining furniture was unassuming as well. There was nothing to make the furniture stand out, but there was an air of a "gathering place"; a friendly, warm, unassuming atmosphere. There were tiki torches and tables outside. You could dine either inside or outside. The music, which was loud enough to isolate the diners without being loud enough to force you to speak loudly. You could hold a normal tonal conversation without hearing the booth next to you. It could be described as a "light club" atmosphere without being too 'cluby". The Food I started with a fried beet with pork belly salad. It had a very mellow and well balanced flavor. The salad was made with what I believe is arugula and was well presented and decorated with sauces The main course was a spicy Rib eye with sliced mushrooms and arugula. On a separate plate there was broccoli, asparagus, green beans and spiced mashed potatoes. The Rib eye was also served with some fried sweet potato wedges under it and that came out on a wooden plank with a dipping sauce. The Rib eye was well portioned and quite thick. I could actually taste the steak and the spices individually. When it came time for dessert, the waitress brought out a sample platter which is all real food and there must have been 30 different items ranging from Creme Brulee to exotic chocolate cakes. Everything from the salad to the entree to the desert were all gourmet quality, all prepared by the owner/master chef Bruce. This was so unique that words fail me, it MUST BE be experienced. This is the first time that I have ever encountered something of this nature before. I was beyond impressed with the service, food and atmosphere. This is a "MUST TRY", you will not be disappointed. For those who are interested, they also have a fairly extensive wine list.

Great food but don't plan on conversing

By Angela M |

Love love love the food and have been there 5 times but every time we say we aren't going back because the music is so loud that you cannot hear the waiter, nor he you, and you certainly cannot carry on a conversation. We asked them to turn it down once when we were the only ones there and they said it was the chef who insists on it being that loud. Apparently he walks in the door and tells them to turn it up. Why not put some extra speakers in the kitchen chef! Thought we would try the patio but it is just as loud out there along with the freeway noise next to the restaurant. Too bad. Great desserts but the red velvet cake is strawberry cake. Don't be fooled

Wow

By Aon28 |

Ruffles Black is a treasure trove of options for anyone with food allergies or dietary restrictions. They even have a Keto and Paleo menu. However, before you meat loving, just give me old fashioned food, too trendy for me eaters think this isn’t the place for you read on. We had a party of five very different style eaters and each agreed we are returning. “The best burger I ever ate” “the big sexy is beyond any chop I’ve had before” my 12 year old grandchild wanted second helpings of the mashed cauliflower. All five meals were spot on. There is a specialty drink menu. The food is delicious and the portions enough for leftovers since you will want to have room for dessert. There is both indoor and outdoor settings. We went at 5:30 and the place was getting full. I suggest reservations. The noise level was high so if you want a quieter experience I would sit outside amongst the twinkling lights. Service was spot on. Dress is business casual and pricing is average.

Pretty Good

By nlott414 |

Pretty good keto and paleo friendly spot. The food was great and the portions were good as well. It is a little pricey but worth the taste. It’s a nice small spot. It’s best you make a reservation prior to going.

Houston's Only Paleo Restaurant

By kbtoreador |

Houston's only Paleo restaurant and a great need for many in the city. It's an added bonus that the food is absolutely incredible! The list of delectable menu items is ongoing, but a few favorites include the paleo shrimp and grits, paleo fried chicken, paleo street tacos, and, without question, the paleo lemon cheesecake. We always feel at home each time we visit, and the staff's kindness abounds.

BEST FOOD EVER

This restaurant is the best in town, I’m from Costa Rica and I love travel to Houston only for this amazing food, the taste is spectacular, attention and good service of the staff incredible. Thanks for make my visit perfect đŸ€©

Our Preferred Paleo Hangout

By texas_zippy |

Ruggles Black is where else can paleo dieters eat and hang out with non-paleos. We eat their with friends once or twice a week. Though few tables and a small bar area for the amount of nighttime customers, there is plenty of heated outdoor seating when the weather cooperates. Best to make reservations online instead of dropping in. We only eat there for dinner, but Bruce and his staff have a great selection of fresh, natural, paleo entrees, including beef, chicken, fish, even paleo tortillas. Whether paleo or not, you have to ask to see their dessert tray. Portions are larger than average, so consider sharing. Prices are slightly higher than Houston's averages, but worth it. Not sure why some here criticize the service here. Although mostly young, their waitstaff is very attentive, and most have been there for more than a year. Anyone can be a bit testy during rush hour. Speak to management there if you have a problem. Black works hard to please their customers.

Noisy but delicious food

By Brochstein |

I was there with a friend on a Friday night. Very noisy and crowded. We had to wait for a table. It was worth it. We shared with a cheese appetizer, a salad and had spaghetti sauce over spaghetti squash. Large portions. Attentive staff. Parking lot is shared by several other businesses so be careful where you park - one car got towed as I was leaving. The chef Bruce was seen frequently talking to people. The wine was delicious and my friend had it corked and took the rest home. Not inexpensive but the food is delicious and very creative - very fresh. I'll be back!

Spicy and satisfying; Paleo-friendly

By Houstonalle4food |

My friend and I went for lunch for her birthday. It was the first visit for both of us. We ordered from the small plates (Food Bar) menu. We both order the paleo seared tuna taco. We asked the waiter about the portion size and thought it might not be enough, so we ordered a samosa to share (thinking we were getting a typical turnover-type samosa). We were surprised to get something resembling a small pizza—not quite what we were anticipating, but with the flavors and spices it was even better. It was also gigantic so we both took some home. The taco is one smallish taco overflowing with delicious vegetables and spices. For the price for one taco, I thought it might have had more tuna, but what was there was extremely good. There was a lunch special, two for one, which our waiter was kind enough to tell us about so we shaved a little off the price. I would definitely order it again, but it was definitely a small plate. I had a cup of their house coffee which I loved. It was a good blend and had cardamom and a touch of cinnamon which I found delicious. I came with a delicious (and not overly sweet) macaroon which was to my liking. Since it was a celebration, we indulged in dessert. The birthday girl had coconut mango banana cake—moist, flavorful and delicious. I had a paleo chocolate coconut almond cake which was to die for. Although we did not indulge, the drinks menu had some good looking cocktails that I'll be back to try, as well as a large wine list. This is a winner for the flavor profiles and inventive offerings, as well as the delicious paleo options. It was a cold day so we stayed in doors, but the patio area does have heaters and looks very inviting.

Incredible food - especially the Paleo options

By Kristy S |

OK, this place is LOUD! If you can live with that then you will love it. The Paleo options are even better than Corner Table. Salads are wonderful, flatbreads are yummy, the Paleo pasta is so good! This is a very trendy place and fun people watching. It is pretty pricey but serves great Lo-carb options which is hard to find around Houston.

The Food is out of this world good

By AlanSemsar |

These guys ready GET food! Start with the Keto bread and go for the fish and steaks you will be so happy you wanna kiss the chef!

Can't miss...reservations a good idea

By Chris R |

So many great menu options to choose from...highly recommend the tacos. Chef Bruce Molzan has another winner. The quaint atmosphere can get a bit loud...only downside.

Great sandwich

By trippingtiger |

Had lunch here and sandwich was huge and very good. Desserts were good but not the best in this area

Great Paleo and Keto Options

By PayneToPlane |

Enjoyed dinner at Ruggles Black. The ambience is very sexy with beautiful chandeliers, accent walls, which are black and gold. Keinya was our waiter and she was very attentive and friendly. For drinks I ordered the Bourbon Billionaire and my husband had the Keto Margarita. Both had a good flavor but a little too juicy for us. For our Entrees I had the Paleo Beef Bolognese which was good. What I loved is my vegetables were seasoned well, not soggy and had a good crunch. My husband had the Lamb Burger and it was enough for two people. The burger was very delicious with a sweet and savory taste. The food and service was great my only complaint is when we were seated our booth had crumbs from the previous group. Will be back due to the various paleo and keto options that’s offered.

Not as happy as all the other reviews you see here

By Ann_Robison |

The food was good. I had the crispy kale and arugula salad. It has a kick to it. Everyone else was happy with their food. It is crazy loud. So bad you can't hear the person right next to you. I cannot bring anyone here who wears hearing aides. After we finished and paid and some at our table were finishing their wine, we were encouraged to leave by the wait staff because he wanted to turn the table. Some in our party were offended. And I will say it was over priced for what you get.

Simply awesome foodie experience!

By mshbnyehud |

Having been to the original Ruggles, I relished the opportunity to enjoy a meal at this latest rendition of chef Bruce Molzan's growing empire of outstanding Houston food establishments. Bruce was "in the house" and the quality of dishes was simply outstanding. My friend and I ordered several small plates including among them Angry Shrimp (incredibly tasty), the snapper taco (delicious and oh so fresh) and Problem # 7 ( you gotta love the name of this dish as much as the delicate scallops). #7 is served brilliantly in a closed cigar box! Open the top and inhale the incredible aroma, only to prepare you for the glorious dish inside. Wow! The only down side is that bottles of wine are a bit pricey -- maybe 15 - 20% too high for a Houston restaurant. I can't wait to return here to try several more small plates (or an entree portion) - there are so many good choices.

Don’t make reservations on a Friday night with more than two people

By Mike K |

Just to let you know. We had a reservation for 6 last night @7 pm. 55 minutes later, we still weren’t seated. I understand busy, I feel for restaurants who’ve had a rough year, but besides your hostesses giving absolutely no care about the situation, with us and do many other customers in similar situations, you’ve absolutely turned off a customer of 35 years, dating back to the montrose location, and will not attempt to make it a nighttime go-to. Lunch, possibly. I was quite embarrassed to invite my friends and be left to have to find a sub-par alternative at 8 pm on a Friday night. Do much more could have been done. A manager could have easily rectified the situation. My guests who’ve never been there were absolutely turned off. We go out 1-2 nights a week at various restaurants- never had this situation.

Very disappointing

By 2lilly2 |

We had the fried oysters and they were good. The scallops were over cooked and over seasoned. Why have a scallop and smother it with hot sauces. We also ordered the snapper again over cooked. The staff was nice but were not trained. The noise level was very loud. This restaurant is a no return for us.

A Paleo restaurant?

By Mizziggy |

My friends who live in Houston picked this place as they thought I’d find the menu interesting—they were right. This restaurants promotes itself as paleo—no bread or wheat flour or rice that I could see. The menu was quite extensive even with their self imposed limitations and I’m sorry I don’t live closer so I could try more menu items. That said we started with a crab tower that had corn tortilla strips for crunch. It was quite enough for 3 friends to share and the lump crab meat was generous and tasty. I had a crab poblano noodle bowl. The noodles were from spaghetti squash (as was much of the menu) and had a coconut cream sauce. The crab meat again was abundant and the flavor combination was quite good. The service was friendly but a tad slow, but we were friends visiting with no agenda so it wasn’t a bad thing. I would definitely recommend this restaurant even if you don’t care about being paleo.

Excellent Tastings!!

By Steve G |

All entrées were extremely tasty. Mussles were the best! Fried rice and snapper.. Yummy! Excellent outside seating. Romantic. Wish I could try all the entrées. Looking forward to the next time I can go!

Ruggles Black Smoking problems issues

By Phillip W |

We have been twice to Ruggles Back, and Each time while sitting outside a man would start smoking a cigar! I was enjoyable sitting outside until the cigar smoke starts chocking you and stinking up Your clothes. We had to move inside to get away from the smoke. We did complain but nothing happened with the smoker he kept on smoking not caring about the people around him! So we ended up going inside and so did another group. I’m no longer wanting to go to this restaurant because the lack of consideration from the owner to lift his pinky to solve this issue! 😡

Continually Great Food & Great Service

By StartYourDay |

I love that this restaurant offers a Keto Menu. The food is always delicious and the Keto bread is outstanding, the salads scrumptious, actually all their food is really delicious. Nice outdoor area too. Our new favourite restaurant! We've had their server Chad twice in the past few weeks and he's incredibly knowledgeable about the menu and super friendly and attentive too.

Excellent Food

By gawildcats |

I was part of a large group one evening. The food was excellent and served exactly as requested. Our server was friendly and attentive. My only complaint was the chairs were extremely uncomfortable. I was surprised that a restaurant of that calibur would seat their patrons in metal folding chairs. But other than that, it was a great experience. Although I didn't try any of the deserts, the array of choices was mind boggling.

Gross and sleazy

By jen8Jen123 |

I can say this in two sentences: Hygiene is non negotiable! After a second gross incident, I have decided to stop visiting this disgusting restaurant. The owner came to address the situation and instead of responding professionally, he proceed to seduce my 17 year old daughter. She was as grossed out as when she saw weird stuff in her salad.

Over rated..what happened

By Allan P |

Now this is owned by Chef Bruce of Ruggles, but you would not know it except to see him there actually sitting at a table eating with some friends. Overall, there wasn't one dish I can say I was dazzled by. I've been a Ruggles fan for well over 30 years. Ruggles Green was great until taken over and somehow someway Chef Bruce simply does not seem to have his heart into this one.

Good food but sassy service

By Rebeccamartens |

We made a reservation in advance for a party of 5. Parking was hard to come by. Why does taco c need so many spots?! Anyway... They put us in one of their booths. We are all small women with bags and coats it was not comfortable being squished in a booth. In addition, two of us ordered an entree that was served on a very large butcher block paddle that took up a ton of room on the table. If you are a larger party request a table. Food ordered: Brussels for appetizer - fantastic Enchiladas- just ok Teriyaki Steak - over cooked but great flavor Tacos- short rib - great / snapper fish- just ok Paleo Fried rice and Snapper - great Service: our server seemed annoyed that everyone didn't order alcohol... It's a paleo focused restaurant... Which means no alcohol for those eating paleo. Their dessert tray is huge! Our server sped through the explanation of 15 items and then was annoyed when we asked questions about what he said. We ended up not ordering a dessert and he was exasperated. Then we were not asked about splitting the bill when clearly we are going to need to split it. Plus there was a drink on the bill that no one ordered. The server was super annoyed with us for dividing up the bill and telling how much to put on each card. Sadly the food could have been amazing but the service just seemed so put out by having to serve us that I will not return.

Outstanding experience! Get the snapper!

By Kristin H |

Last night we had the pleasure of visiting Ruggles Black for the first time and had one of the best dining experiences we've ever had in Houston. We started with happy hour (half off drinks until 6 pm - excellent value) and shortly after I posted a photo on my social media Chef Bruce came up to us and introduced himself. He was very friendly and continued to stop by once we were seated for dinner. We received a complimentary appetizer from the chef. It was the paleo angry shrimp. The shrimp were huge and we really enjoyed the yellow curry sauce. What a delightful surprise! My sister and I ordered the same entrees - snapper "fish and chips." OMG it was the best, freshest snapper I've had in a long time and we live near Galveston. That really impressed us. It was extremely flaky and we loved the almond flour batter. The sweet potato fries were also a hit. Of course, had to get dessert. I ordered the white chocolate bread pudding, as I was a fan of the one at Ruggles Green back in the day. It is still divine! My sister tried the CPD brownie. Chef Bruce continued to check on us and made us feel like family. I noticed how friendly and caring he was with guests throughout the restaurant. This was honestly one of my favorite experiences at a restaurant ever. Thank you again Chef Bruce. We can't wait to come back! :-)

A most disappointing service experience

By Matt O |

I can assure you this is not some normal 1 star review. A valet driver hit my daughter with a car during our meal and management did nothing. Read on to learn what happened. This evening our family of 4 chose to have family dinner at Ruggles Black. Half way through dinner one of the valet drivers was backing into a parking spot directly behind our table in the patio seating area. Going too fast and absent of spacial awareness, the driver backed into the fence, pushing the fence into the bench our daughters were sitting on, knocking one of them into the dinner table. It all happened so fast. My wife jumped up and rushed to check on our daughter, who was incredibly shaken up. Thankfully, she was not physically injured from what we could tell, but it did cause anxiety for the evening. Upon the conclusion of the meal, our server brought us the full bill. Nothing comped. No percentage off. Every item charged. I told the server that I was happy to provide her with direct tip and take care of her as this was not her fault, but that I would like for the manager to take care of our bill given their valet driver ran into our daughter. The manager, who had previously visited our table after the incident, actually had the audacity to come back to our table and ask us what the problem was this evening. The amount of lying, blame shifting, and story backpedaling was downright disappointing. From telling us that the valet are a separate entity and pay Ruggles for the ability to park cars (mind you there is no self park option at Ruggles Black), to claiming that he did not know of the incident, only to claim in the next minute that the Shirley temples he brought out earlier was to make up for the incident. Then, he claimed it was not his call but rather that of the owner and Executive Chef, Chef Molzan, who said he would not be comping our meal as it was not their fault. We ultimately paid our $111.00 bill, 20% tipped our server, and left. Honestly, our bill did not set us back financially. If it did, we have no business eating out. However, the principles of the manager and owner of Ruggles Black left something to be desired. The right thing would have been to comp our meal, apologize genuinely, and let us know they would talk to the valet company to ensure this incident WS properly noted. None of that occurred. It’s a shame that greed, dishonesty, and a lack of empathy was what was actually on the menu at Ruggles Black. This isn’t the type of review where I tell you, the reader, that you should never frequent Ruggles Black again. You do what makes you happy and fills your belly. For me and my family, today was the last time we will dine at Ruggles Black, and our bill was the last money we will ever spend there or any other restaurant owned by Chef Molzan. If $111.00 means more to you than making the situation right, perhaps you should re-evaluate your pursuits in the hospitality world. If they had made right by us, owned the fault, and comped our meal, I promise we would have returned. It would have shown that they have heart, and I’m always happy to do business with people who have heart. Tonight was one of the more disappointing experiences I’ve had at a restaurant. It felt like we weren’t cared about. It felt like we were treated as if we were stupid. We were talked to as if we were annoying complainers fabricating an issue to get a free meal. It was a sad dining experience tonight. So, if you read this far, perhaps consider this story the next time you think of dining in or ordering out from Ruggles Black. If you do, more power to you. The incident tonight didn’t happen to y’all. That said, be warned that should you have an issue with service or experience an unsettling incident, don’t be surprised by the response you receive from management. The switch from being treated like a punk instead of a patron will make your head spin. I hope the $111.00 was worth it. It’s the last they will ever receive from us.

Great Venue!

Had an amazing evening, celebrating our wedding anniversary. The Paleo menu was fantastic, I cannot recommend this restaurant enough! Wish they would open a venue in London or Surrey! A really lovely evening!

Great Lunch

By SouthMS_Traveller |

I really enjoyed this place for lunch. Their tacos are awesome starters and the tandoori chicken was awesome!

What's Not to Love About This Place?

Great place to go, a Houston favorite. Comprehensive service at every angle, wonderful, delectable food. Every visit is something to look forward to. Great vegan options.

Ruggles Black does not dissappoint

By Mark R |

My birthday is the 25th and once I turned 40 I started having birthday weeks instead of just a day. My wife suggested Ruggles Black (we live in Spring so 'downtown' is a rare treat for me). Parking was easy, I tripped over a mop bucket on the way in (odd that it was there) and was greeted by a less than enthusiastic hostess. I mentioned that I thought that I knew the bartender (Marco - a legend with Bruce's restaurants I imagine!) and she one upped me with a short retort 'ya, I do too'. She directed the other hostess to take us to a table and the events turned, well, awesome. She was friendly and let us know that our server, Christian, would be right with us. As we were sitting down, back servers (? I guess that's what they are called) already had water on the table for us. Christian greeted us promptly asking if we had been there before. I told him we had not so he asked if he could tell us about some of the specials. We had the brussel sprouts (I don't care for them but I do now) as an appetizer, my wife had the sea bass and I had the rib eye. When the rib eye came, it was covered in arugula (interesting). I moved some of the arugula to the side and tried the steak. WOW - I hate it when people say 'the best they ever had' because that guarantees that the next guy will be disappointed so I won't say that. I will say this however, there are certain items I can check off my bucket list now and this is one of them. I've been to steak houses all over the country and I don't think that I've ever enjoyed a meal like this. Bruce went above and beyond every thing that I've ever sampled the last 20 years following him around Houston! My wife enjoyed her sea bass 'melts in my mouth with just a little crispy around the edges' a great deal as well. We finished with the bread pudding - another signature Mozan creation.

Cashew queso

By Glen_Arbor_Blues |

So I called and asked which was better the queso or the hummus and I was in the mood for hummus but the waitress told me the queso so I tried it. I am so glad I did it was absolutely incredible. I would stop here just for this. It's made out of cashews.

Delicious

By getaway3 |

I would recommend studying the menu before you go. There are so many awesome choices from appetizers to entrees to desserts. Do not miss the chocolate mousse made out of avocado with paleo coconut whipped cream!

Disgusting

By Benjamin F |

I have read about issues with hygiene in some Houston restaurants, but never expect to fin a have baked roach in my meal. This is disgusting !

Excellent quality food

By cirop1204 |

I have dined at other Ruggles restaurants before. The Chef is incredibly talented. His specialties in this restaurant go from Keto friendly to Paleo dishes and vegetarian choices. The spices are just perfect even though I am not a curry lover. Our server Hector did a wonderful job keeping our table well served at all times.

Great Service, Big Portions and Quality Food

By matkincc |

We ate here whilst on a short visit to Houston as it was near to our hotel and found it to be more like a real restaurant rather than many American diners. The welcome and table service were good and the meal options are more European than US. Prices are reasonable but wine is expensive and the dessert options are excellent.

Awesome Keto menu!!

By Katherine A |

It’s very hard to find restaurant Keto food. But Ruggles Black has a new Keto menu. It’s fairly limited at this point, but so good! We ordered the Keto Bread, which is basically the fat head pizza dough made into bread. Wow. So freakin good. We also got the shrimp with zoodles. The shrimp was great, but there were barely any zoodles. A bit disappointing since a Keto diet needs to be veggie heavy, but still very good. The highlight of the main course was the Mediterranean Chicken. So much flavor. The accompanying cauliflower rice was hands down the best I’ve ever had. We ordered the Keto pie and Keto bombs for dessert. My husband loved the pie. The bombs were...well, the bomb. We loved this restaurant before the Keto menu, but we’ll be regular patrons now. Highly recommend!!

Filling paleo cuisine with an Asian flair

By Familytravelmaven |

Ruggles was right by our hotel and came recommended. The menu is filled with delicious paleo combinations that were beautifully presented and delicious. We tried the pan roasted Brussels sprouts that came topped with sweet potato shreds and sprouts. I then had the crab poblano "pasta" made with spaghetti squash and covered in coconut milk cream. This dish was rich and filling. My son ordered the lobster pizza that had a sweet hoisin sauce on top. We were so full we couldn't try dessert but I'm sure it would have been delicious.

Paleo paradise

By Barbandjerronthego |

I'm not sure how to describe the menu or atmosphere, Indian, seafood, Paleo, street food, Asian fusion. Edgy decor with a wide range of music genres. The Paleo desserts are to die for, lemon cheesecake, chocolate cheesecake or almond joy cake....hmm I'll take them all! For starters the crab tower is an engineering and flavor marvel. Whether you're following the Paleo diet or just need to avoid gluten and/or dairy, this is your place. The non-Paleo diner will not be disappointed, there is a great variety of choices for them too, including flatbreads and pho.

Really tasty and innovative!

By My Vagabond Life |

Really liked this restaurant. The atmosphere is warm and friendly. The menu is extensive and everything we ordered was wonderful. My favorite was the " fried oysters with caviar", just thinking about it makes me want to go there right now. The " crab tower" was wonderful and big enough to share or have as a meal. I love the menu and how it specifies Keto or Paleo, for those who are conscious of such diets. All the taco's we ordered were fantastic as well. The deserts are fabulous, although I found the presentation to be a bit odd, as they bring out a large tray of examples of each and its not entirely appetizing as they look a bit aged, better to use descriptions and then just bring out the lovely desert, sometimes using your imagination is better than looking at a tray of 20+ deserts. The wait staff was spectacular, but not obsequious. Oh, and I hate having TV's in a restaurant, they should only be reserved for a sports bar.

Yes Please

We visited Houston recently. A friend suggested Ruggles Black, so we excitedly went. Fantastic from valet to valet and every moment in between. Fantastic staff, gorgeous environment and absolutely phenomenal food. The drinks were superb as well. We are literally planning a trip back to Texas just to go back to Ruggles Black!

Scallops made us sick

By bigfish210 |

We dined at RB on 9/5/18. We ordered wings and scallops to start. Wings were the best we've ever tried. The sauces for each were amazing. However, the scallops... As I was eating mine I noticed the fishy smell and taste. Too late....down it goes. My GF did the same. Short rib pizza was meh...not much flavor and very little meat. We shared the paleo shrimp pasta, and it was excellent. We finished our meal and rushed home. Neither of us felt great. Minutes later....yep...the scallops were bad. We catch, cook, and eat a lot of seafood. We should have spit it out immediately, but it was our first bites and...well...lesson learned. And surprisingly, the service was bad. We had to ask for refills of our water both times, the waiter served 2nd course and entre together, and no consideration for messy hands after serving wings. No impressed.

Delicious food and cocktails, wonderful service!

By Paula B |

My husband took me out on a date to Ruggles Black this past Friday, and I wasn't sure what to expect, having read mixed reviews. We were pleasantly surprised though! Service was impeccable, we were waited on but the servers did not "hover" annoyingly. The food was just amazing. I ordered the short rib "flatbread" which turned out to be a giant pizza! I wasn't disappointed though. The crust was amazing and my husband has already said we're going back just to get that. Husband ordered a burger that was equally delicious. The sweet potato fries that came with it were also amazing. We both ordered cocktails as well, but I can't remember what they were called. Mine had coconut flavor, and my husband's was sort of like a moscow mule. Both were very good. For dessert we had the cajeta chocolate cake, and it was great! My one piece of advice would have been to serve it warm. It was served cold, like it had been sitting in the fridge. It would have been even better had it been warm, in my opinion. Overall, it was really delicious and a wonderful experience, and we will definitely be back!

Outstanding!

By drlehman |

We love this restaurant! Combination of Paleo and Asian. Tremendous specialty drinks...and appetizers. Two couples enjoying a Monday evening.....so a slower night. Appetizer of specialty Creme brûlée which was really special and two house salads....then the mains....pistachio crusted red fish, beef short ribs, specialty duck breast, and Paleo tacos. Then to end the evening with Paleo chocolate mousse which was outstanding. Great evening!

Houston’s top restaurants

By Laith Q |

A unique place with a classy decoration and a very friendly atmosphere. The staff are super nice and well selected. The chandeliers are adding a charming touch to the place. The menu has a WIDE variety of food: Seafood Tacos Halal Veggie Keto Indian French Literally any thing you can think of is there and I still don’t know how they manage to do it. The food is tasty and amazingly delicious. This is the place to go to when u are in town and make sure you book ahead of time cuz it was packed. Enjoy..

Zero social distancing

By ShariOverseas |

Despite reserving a patio table, there were none available when we arrived and we were seated indoors. The tables were incredibly close to one another and the restaurant was incredibly busy. The family to my right, were closer to me than my husband, who was seated across the table from me! We did not feel comfortable or safe, so left after ordering appetisers. The food we had was delicious, however we won’t be back while the pandemic continues.

Big disappointment...

By Justin W |

Friends and I have been wanting to try Ruggles Black for awhile now and finally got dinner reservations last night. Our reservations were for 8:00pm and we arrived shortly before our reservations. The interior of the restaurant is relatively small and packed with tables. It was really loud inside and we made our way to the bar to get a drink while we waited. The bar area is pressed up against a row of tables and next to the waiter station making the bar area very congested. We began our wait for our table and waited...and waited...and waited some more. Eventually the host offered to buy us a round of drinks because it was taking so long. My friend went up to the bar and ordered four drinks. There was a mix-up and the bartender sent two of the four drinks down the bar to two other people not in our group. Honest mistake - no big deal. However when we told him that two of us didn't get our drinks, his reaction was surprising. He was extremely rude and continued to argue with my friend who ordered the drinks that my friend had misinformed him. I have never seen a bartender be as rude as he was to my friend. Finally, FORTY minutes after our reservation time, we were seated. Once we ordered our food, the customer service improved. The quality of the food was good but could not excuse the extremely poor customer service we experienced. There are plenty of Houston restaurants with good food. I will not be returning to Ruggles Black.

Amazing Food!

By Suzann M |

My daughter and I went here last Friday. First, the bad news: very cramped, very noisy. BUT, I'd put up with both because the food was just wonderful. We had the roasted brussel sprouts, and the combination of orange, bacon, and pine nuts (?) was exceptional. We ordered the short rib flatbread, but when it came, we both said it should have been called a pizza. A little spicy, topped with a cucumber slice, was delicious. Our coffee came with a wonderful, crunchy macaroon, and we had Charlotte's Web for dessert, which was heavenly. Definitely too much food for the two of us, but the leftovers were shared with the rest of her family. I'll be dreaming about this food!!! Many of the items were listed as Paleo and there were many vegetarian options.

GREAT FIND!

By Ann Lopez |

We were supposed to go to Pepper Twins next door but to our disappointment they were closed for dine in.We stumbled into this gem instead...a great find!!! the ambience was great, the staff were fabulous and the food was superb..everthing was delicious. Our office staff of party of 9 enjoyed a great luncheon here. We will be back!

Must Try!

By Ellen |

The food and service is amazing! Our server was Adrien and was fantastic. The menu had options for everyone and the dessert tray was amazing! It was hard to even make a decision. I really enjoy that the restaurant takes food allergies and sensitivities serious. Ever since covid many restaurants do not care anymore. The parking is valet only so we found a parking garage near by. The atmosphere and noise is my only complaint. It was astoundingly loud it was hard to have a conversation. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Never disappointed

By NCTexan2011 |

If you like fresh ingredients and tasty food but still want options like paleo and gluten free then the Ruggles restaurants are a great choice. This was my first time going to Ruggles Black (have been to the Ruggles Green locations before) and there were so many options that I wanted to try! It is on the pricey side, but a good treat. The wine list by the glass has a number of options as well. Lastly, the dessert tray (even if I didn't order any) is a site to see.

Amazing Lunch

By Sonya G |

Tried this place for the first time the other day and it was amazing! I had the tandoori pizza and the lobster spring rolls. Bother were amazing! My friend had the goat cheese stuffed chicken and said it was to die for. I can't believe I've never seen this place before. I will be back to try other items soon!!

My favorite restaurant!

By Marker M |

I love this restaurant. This is my favorite restaurant and I enjoy just about everything on the menu. This is a very unique restaurant in that the cuisine is Keto, Paleo and CBD. I always introduce this restaurant to friends and family and rave about it. For my birthday I ordered the delicious Keto Nutella pie. So rich and delicious!

Great Evening!!

By Karen F |

We had a wonderful evening at Ruggles Black. The food was very tasty, the service was impeccable and the desserts divine. Everyone in our party repeatedly complimented their food choices throughout the evening. I can safely say that we will all definitely be making another visit to Ruggles Black.

This place is fantastic

By Nate E |

I really enjoyed my wife and my dinner to Ruggles Black. The atmosphere is really interesting. It feels very cozy without being stuffy at all. The music was a lot of fun and the food was fantastic. We will be back.

Best Appetizers in Town

By Ted77019 |

We come here and sit at the bar just to eat from the appetizer menu. The Angry shrimp, snapper taco and the Crab Tower are not to be missed. The lamb tacos are great, aw well. We swear to come back and try different offerings but the ones I just mentioned are too good to miss.

Delicious beautiful food in an elegant yet still comfortable restaurant

By Karen T |

Food in this beautiful yet comfortable restaurant is extraordinarily delicious and beautiful. Further, the menu is large and offers Palio and Keto options and can also accommodate Vegans perfectly. The kitchen complies with all the details true Vegans demand, which is impressive, especially considering that this restaurant is not a Vegan restaurant and has many wonderful options for folks on ordinary diets also. Friendly and responsive service, too. A top notch place--one of the very best in the United States. Incredibly talented chef. Can't recommend enough. My clients say this restaurant is worth a trip to Houston.

Our table was hit by a car and management did nothing

By NorthStar582818 |

While our meal and service was fine; the valet backed a car into our table knocking my 5 year old daughter half a foot forward during our meal giving all of us a fright. While she's okay, she was scared as was my family. i was horribly disappointed when no part of our meal was taken care of. When we asked if it could be comped given the fact that the valet quite literally hit our table while dining on their patio, the manager asked us "do we have a problem here" and then took on a defensive position saying "the valet company is not associated with us. They pay us to be here to park cars. That would be me paying for someone else's mistake" I have never felt so undervalued as a patron. The valet is serving the restaurant that we are dining in and my daughters seat got hit by a car they were parking while dining at their establishment. The manager said over and over again "sorry, but it's just not my fault". Ruggles Black is a great restaurant with plenty of business and they won't suffer from losing us a as patrons or one bad review, but i cannot believe that the restaurant would act this way to our family of 4 rather than make this right. I'm not anyone important in the houston restaurant scene, and clearly not someone valued at all to Ruggles Black or their management.

Great Food

By Travlerlee |

I took my cousin here the other night to try Paleo food choices. This was my first time coming here. We both ordered the Paleo fried chicken with vegetables. I liked the mashed cauliflower. The chicken was very flavorful and they had two dipping sauces. It was wonderful but a little pricey. Our server David was really good and suggested a chocolate dessert with ice cream that was delicious. I would definitely go here again. I like their sister restaurant Ruggles Green

Spectacular food, great service and fun atmosphere!!!

By Pete07046 |

We are visiting Houston and hosted extended family at Ruggles Black to gather for the first time since COVID-19 began and celebrate our daughter’s graduation. We all had a fantastic experience. The food was spectacular. The atmosphere is casual and fun. Best of all, the service was outstanding! Our server Emma is wonderful, she was very attentive, friendly and took great care of our table of 10 people. The menu has great variety, including many gluten-free choices for my daughter who has celiac disease and other relatives who follow vegetarian diets. The carnivores at the table (including me) also were very happy. Everyone loved their food, the dishes were delicious with extraordinary creativity and beautiful presentation. The restaurant has a good wine list and lots of cocktails, liquor and beer to choose from. And of course, it’s Ruggles so the desserts were delicious. This was my first visit to this restaurant, but I have been to the original Ruggles many times and this location has a very cool atmosphere. We sat inside but they have great outdoor seating too. This restaurant will always be a top choice for us in future trips to Houston.

Good food But

By jsthouston |

Have eaten at this restaurant a couple of times this year, mostly for lunch, as I think the food is tasty and fairly priced. The lunch we had recently reminds me why I don't eat at this restaurant more often. For one thing it's very noisy and the service does not come close to matching the food. I will not be back for at least a couple of months and then only because the kale salad is worth the trouble.

Finding solace in fantastic food

By Nathalie R |

I was supposed to meet my friend here for lunch today and after the election results last night, I cancelled. At the last minute, we met anyway, to lift our spirits up and Ruggles Black did not disappoint. The patio setting was beautiful and perfect for this fall day, although falling nuts from the overhead trees was a distraction. We had the Brussels sprouts as a shared appetizer which was delicious. Maybe a little heavy on the ginger. I had the pumpkin and butternut squash soup as a meal which was outstanding. Truly delicious. I was full and satiated and skipped dessert. Next time I guess? I did have coffee, served with a surprise chocolate spoon and macaroon. Yum!

Allegorical

By Hermes_NL đŸ‡łđŸ‡± |

Dining on busy evening at the new Ruggles Black gives you the feeling you are a figurant in an allegorical play. The staff are as diverse as a circus crew
the tiny and quick water waiters, the tall transgender hostess, the beautiful and elegant female maitre d' with the snake pants and the too loud laugh, the Asian cook who takes his coachable moments with the others, and the waiter who appears to be under the influence of something and only wants to serve you certain wines to his recommendation, perhaps because the extensive wine list is not really present in the cellar. Contrary to expectation however these wines were good and not too pricey, and showed up fast even though the waiter lost himself in casual conversation with his peers. The food was also good, sumptuous, overwhelming and filling, a bit like the place itself - a mixture of many things on your plate in interesting shapes and forms. The Paleo concept formerly known from Corner Table is repeated here in virtually unchanged form with some identical dishes such as the crab tower and the scallops in a cigar box, likely because allegedly the owner is the former cook from this place.

Best place if you're eating Keto

By GiniB_11 |

As a diehard keto eater, it's rare to find a restaurant with more than one keto item available. Ruggles Black has a whole menu of it! The food was fresh and made to order and was absolutely delicious!

One & Done

By ellzebeth |

First time at Ruggles Black. Really wanted to LOVE it. Our waitress was super nice, attentive, gave recommendations, etc. The place itself is a bit tight for seating - fairly close quarters with neighboring tables. Parking for the restaurant is atrocious - just about every spot we saw open was marked specifically for Taco Cabana and Pepper Twins. That part aside, the food was sadly disappointing, while the prices are on the HIGH side. We ordered a variety of items - the 'queso' was great - essentially just hummus with chips. Seafood ramen was no good, lacked flavor and for what it costs, you can get about 3 bowls elsewhere and it will taste better. The restaurant touts asian/indian flavors, but I think it misses the mark - big time. Dessert selection is outstanding - too many to choose from. Were it not for the desserts, I wouldn't even have considered giving them a 3.

Wonderful!

By LBHouston11 |

Love the atmosphere—too cold to sit outside but the strings of lights outside and collection of chandeliers inside make for a great look. Food is great—chicken sandwich, tacos were excellent as is service and presentation of the food. A little pricey for main courses but if you stick to salads and lunch specials, you won’t notice. Well worth it.

Paleo? No. Yuckio

By TravelMavenWorld |

I've loved Ruggles for over 40 years! I hate to give negative reviews, but meal was awful! We had a Saturday lunch (with owner on site). Good vibe, but terrible turkey burger. Too salty by 1000%. Ok, I'd eat dessert instead ... Ruggles is known for its desserts. Carrot cake mushy, bland. Beautiful, but bad. Friends Paleo Cobbler looked like "sick." Tasted like mush with a strawberry in it. I should have asked to have my meal comped, but I'm not that cheap. Concentrate on Taste, please. The people behind Ruggles are pros. They can turn our first rate, beautiful food. Just didn't.

Great spot for great food

By tleeEvans |

Great food, service, and atmosphere. We were there New Years Eve, and as it was crowed, our server was very attentive and the food came quickly. Everything we had was excellent, Their butternut squash soup was very good. It was a little round, but not so bad that we could not hear our conversation. Our only negative, is the parking, it is valet, but the lot is so small, that if people are coming in to park, it is hard for cars to get out. But the valet is very reasonable.

Paleo palates--unite!

By Carolina H |

Flavorful food, friendly service and a chic ambiance make for a great combination when searching for exceptional quality dining--and Ruggles Black delivers on all counts. Think French meets Indian, with a Paleo heart. The menu has some really great choices, including the paleo tacos (I myself enjoy the snapper and short rib). Their crab tower is popular, but I've had better elsewhere. Too many wonton sticks for my taste. I gravitate toward their pho and ramen, but just discovered the pistachio snapper. I became a fan as soon as I dove into that fig "jam"... "sauce"... Whatever, it's good! The paleo shrimp is great--I love a nice curry dish. Plus, I absolutely love getting tricked into thinking I'm eating bad carbs! They have more desserts to choose from than I can count! The Charlotte's Web dessert is deceivingly light--such a tasty treat! The lemon cheesecake is fluffier than your average cheesecake, and much to be enjoyed! Their wine pours are generous, and great prices (e.g. Miraval Rosé $11/glass). I've never had a problem getting seated immediately, contrary to what others have experienced. Also, the prices may seem high, but no different than going to your favorite steakhouse. It may be the casual vibe and outdoor patio that don't earn the higher prices in many people's books, but the menu is filled with healthy, yet tasty choices that are otherwise difficult to find elsewhere (well, I guess you could go to Corner Table, but I feel like there are more choices here for my fellow paleo-eaters). Otherwise, my only qualm is the parking/location. It's not necessarily hard to get to and find a parking spot, but it's not super easy either. It's not their fault, just the way the street is laid out behind a busy intersection of the highway. Calls for sharing space with all surrounding businesses. Can't wait to try the flatbreads! Until next time...

Paleo tacos are tasty; nut flour instead of wheat

By autrevie |

Tried the assorted taco plate at lunch - more like savory crepes, and the waiter said the batter was made with almond flour, rather than wheat. Not sure why that makes them "paleo" but they were all tasty, Snapper, Seared Tuna, and Beef Short Rib. They can also be ordered individually as starters.

Great place for tasty healthy food

By pattyh129 |

My husband, daughter and I stopped in recently for lunch. Ruggles Black advertises itself as a "paleo" / "keto" friendly place, but it's much more than that. They have a wonderful menu of fresh, tasty, good quality, "foodie" food for all. We shared a crab tower appetizer that provided generous portions of crab, avocado, and pico di gallo perfectly sauced for hearty yummy dipping. Then, we couldn't help ourselves, we all had the "fish and chips" because it was red snapper in an almond crust, with a spicey slaw and sweet potato fries - a fairly healthy spin on what is usually a true guilty pleasure! We all thought it was delicious and would recommend it. With wine and tip for our pleasant server our tab was about $125, which we considered a good value for the quality of food and ambience.

Delicious and fun

By Xplore_More |

I have always loved the Ruggles restaurants, but this was my first visit to Black (paleo). The atmosphere is quirky yet relaxing, really a fun place to hang out. The menu is expansive, so there is something for everyone. You could serve these dishes in any restaurant and you would not know they were paleo...just beautifully plated and delicious. The vegetable dishes were extremely fresh and made in a way that the flavor of vegetable really stood out. All of the seafood options were extremely fresh...the snapper was excellent. Ruggles does not disappoint. Do not let the 'paleo' scare you, this is a treat!

Ruggles Black is INCREDIBLE!

By pedalfoot |

On Friday evening, 03/01/19, my wife and I took our son along with his wife to Ruggles Black for our son’s birthday (his request, as I always let each family member pick where they want to dine for their birthday!). My son and his wife had dined here once before, it was me and my wife’s first visit! Let me start by saying the food was incredible and definitely some of the best we’ve ever had! We started with an appetizer of Pan Roasted Brussels Sprouts—-O.M.G.!! (my mouth is watering for more as I write this!). Entrees ordered: I had the Pistachio Snapper which came with a roasted veggies medley (which included asparagus, green beans, sweet potatoes, and broccoli)! Best Snapper I’ve ever had, and those veggies were wonderful!! My wife had the spinach-stuffed chicken which was “amazing” with the same veggie medley. My son had the goat cheese stuffed chicken, again “awesome” with the veggie medley. And, last but not least, my son’s wife had the Paleo Lobster Enchiladas which were “incredible”!! Each portion on each plate was generous! Our server was awesome, and our drink glasses were never empty! Ruggles Black is an incredible place with incredible food and menu, we will see you again soon!

Fusion restaurant with Paleo slant

Inventive menu with Indian and Asian influences. Limited vegetarian / vegan options, but add 1* to rating if you follow Paleo or Keto diet. Excellent service. Spectacular desserts. Cool décor.

This place is spectacular, words can not describe. The dishes are so beautifully presented, and delicious. Definitely worth every penny. The atmosphere and staff are great, very clean and comfortable environment.

Paleo Desserts Abound

By cartall |

Never have I had such an amazing dessert experience much less a Paleo dessert experience! The Goat Cheese Cheesecake (don't judge) was unbelievable! My daughter chose the Chocolate Cheesecake Brûlée & if you like chocolate you will die over this. Our friend chose an unbelievable Paleo chocolate creme' that was as smooth as silk & oh so Chocolatey! I can't wait to return for dinner cause the menu looked amazing!

Loved the food, cocktails and outdoor patio

By Msturge |

The staff was really nice and the quaint outdoor patio was very charming, with nice lighting strung up and when it was cool out a cool fireplace. We ordered some grilled brussles sprouts that were amazing, then I got a vegetarian taco appetizer for my meal which I also loved and can't wait to go back for.

This place used to be good when they first open but for the price of things it be better to go eat Indian food it's a small little restaurant and they don't have much parking there's a large menu but it reminds me of most of the other Concepts on a scale 1 to 10 I would give this 5

Really sucks

For the price of the food it's not worth it... Most of the stuff is not ground breaking good and flavors just another average concept trying to make it

My favorite restaurant

By J G |

In a town of incredible food restaurants, Ruggles Black continues to be one of my favorite restaurants. The hip Asian, Indian decor and food is amazing. Although I like Paleo dishes, I don't follow that diet, but I would if I could eat at Ruggles Black every day. Honestly, I think I've had almost ever didh on their menu. My favorites are: Paleo Shrimp, Pan Roasted Brussel Sprouts, Curry Seafood Ramen, any of the pizzas, and Problem #17. Cheers!

Even the Kale salad frailed

By jsthouston |

The last time I rated this restaurant I said the food was good but thought that it was loud and the service was poor. I said I would no doubt be back because I liked some of the spicy appertizers and the Kale salad. Sadly this time even the Kale salad was bad and in my view the other problems have not gotten any better, save perhaps the service. I do not expect to return.

Food that is with this left out, and with those not added. Is it still food?

The food was ok. My boyfriend could barely find the fish hidden under a file of pico de gallo that is $40 a plate. Overall, food was ok and overpriced. Menu is meant for picky eaters. Gluten-free this and Paleo that. Waiters were not attentive, and the music was a little too loud for conservation beyond your next person.

Tasty Dishes, Good Service

Ruggles Black has nice and flavorful dishes. The fish taco appetizer is nice and large. Reservations are recommended. The menu has a heavy slant toward a paleo style, and if you are gluten free, then all the better. I recommend trying this restaurant, and it is an easy stop off of I-69/Highway 59.

great food, ambiance needs work

Paleo Friendly Restaurant

We chose this hotel, because it is paleo friendly. The menu has many paleo choices. Our food was excellent! Our service was great, too.

Excellent Steaks

You have got to experience this culinary delight. Ruggles Black has one of the best steak in town and nice patio for outdoor dining.

Kind of pricey, but very inventive and tasty

By AlejoHouston |

Know before you go that the menu at Ruggles Black is heavy on Indian-fusion dishes. Our party started out with the tandoori chicken flatbread-- it is almost like a thin crust pizza without the cheese. It is also huge and our party of 6 only made a dent in it. I had the mushroom and veggie pasta which was nicely flavored with tumeric in a heavy cream sauce. Others in my group ordered the salads and they were nicely presented and looked very flavorful. Someone else ordered the tacos and said they were also good. Some items seem reasonably priced (salads, flatbreads), others seem kind of high for what you get. For example, the tacos are $9-10 apiece and they were no bigger than tacos you would get at most restaurants that had 2-3 tacos in an order. The outdoor seating is nice, just know that you will be looking at a parking lot and the Taco Cabana. The inside decor was quite nice and had an exotic flare.

GREAT FOOD, Service is a bit MEH!

Yummy food lots of choices, menu is extensive & has something for everyone. We started w/ the crab tower which consists of avocado, lump crab salad mixed w/ mayo stacked in layers w/ tomatoes & topped w/ crispy fried onions & sweet potatoes, very pretty & tasty. My Boo got the Curry Ramen full of seafood, shrimp, fish, mussels, clams & a hot broth of noodles. I got the half rack of lamb w/ a very delish cherry compote on top of greens cooked perfectly. Served w/ a side of mash cauliflower, green beans & grilled vegetables w/ a few sweet potato wedges. We visited with the owner/chef Bruce Molzan when he stopped by our table to check on us. It was nice to catch up w/ him. We both were in the restaurant biz 40 years ago! Wow, how time flies. The waitress was pleasant & service was good but I'm docking one star for serving the appetizer before our cocktails. Gr We look forward to returning to this lovely spot & really liked the openness of this beautiful restaurant.

Great Experience

We planned to stop by for appetizers and got lucky. We sat at the bar and visited with the Staff who were all gracious. My wife ordered the Crab Tower and I had the Tandoori chicken pizza and both were exceptionally good. The drinks are pricey, however. My wife's Sancerre was $15 and my Pinot Noir was the same. We will go back and have these exact appetizers again. Plenty for a meal.
