Yes, SUSHI

By Theresa E |

I am a huge sushi lover and I am always a little worried about the quality of fish whenever I enter a sushi restaurant. But at Sugarfish I had a great experience throughout. Service was really nice and quick and as I said already, the quality and taste of the food was fantastic. The only thing to mention is that you have to expect to wait a bit until you get seated. We waited 30 mins.

Amazing Sushi

By Jazmin Nash |

Was great! They have an amazing lunch deal and the food came quickly and was fresh. Would highly recommend this place!

Loved it!

By Stephanie J |

Excellent food and great guidance on the menu by Freddie as we were first time diners! Looking forward to trying the location in NY when we get home.

It doesn't get better than this.

By Josh |

Wow. I have eaten a lot of sushi over the years. Sugarfish was easily the best I have ever had -- and I don't say that lightly! Take the advice of the chef and order the "Trust me" menu. You'll be awarded with a stead stream of the highest quality sushi you have ever tried. Everything was assembled so thoughtfully and with so much care. If I had the time, I would have gone back for a second meal there. Outstanding!

The best Sushi I've ever had

By Noafie |

I went for lunch with a friend, expecting regular Sushi but was blown away by the flavors and quality of the food. The restaurant isn't very big, is simply decorated and offers a menu with a limited but interesting selection of Sushi. Upon arrival we were informed that they do not serve any rollls with Avocado or Mayo but rather pure authentic Sushi. We opted for the "Nozawa Trust Me" which gave us a selection of Sashimi, Sushi and two handrolls. The fish was to die for, the rice warm and perfectly cooked and the portion sizes perfect. I'm not sure how I'm going to go back to eating ordinary Sushi after this fabulous meal!

Convenient location and quick service

By Grace Annette C Y |

We went there to catch lunch with family. The sushi is always fresh at all sugarfish chain stores. Servers are always polite. Overall it’s a solid chain store setup with fresh fish, fast turnaround and pleasant services .

Excellent place for sushi in DTLA

By Skaerje |

Stopped by here for dinner with friends. We were grateful to get a seat since this is a very small restaurant. We each had the $35 flight of sushi and highly recommend it. The fish was extremely fresh and the warm rice made everything taste buttery. I can't wait to come back.

Unbelievably good sushi!

By Bob R |

I eat a lot of sushi, but this was in a class of its own. Very simple, nothing fancy, but wow! What quality! I had the Trust Me choice. Each piece of sushi was tender, delicate, with no stringiness or off-taste parts - it melted in my mouth. The distinctive taste of each selection stood out - the rice was 'sticky' but not all stuck together, as often happens. This was really, really good sushi. Highly recommended!

THE Sushi

By David G |

I've done various version of the Trust-Me Delivery order and every time it's been an amazing culinary experience. Never thought I'd seriously consider I may have a sushi addiction till I had their Sushi. SO. GOOD. Can't recommend highly enough.

Thanks God It's Fabulous!

By MaMe85 |

For sure one of my favorite sushi restaurant in the world. I always love how the fish tastes - it's always fresh - and the fact that you don't need to add soy sauce to have some flavor. Plus, prices are super fair and I'd really recommend the Trust me menu.

birth day dinner

By Saho T |

Customer service :4/5 Quality of food:5/5 Price: $30-50/per I took my bf here for his birthday he really loves their omakase. But it's hard to find parking and even if you find one it will be at least $10 for flat rate. Also this restaurant won't let you sit till all your party is there.

Very good sushi.

By Herman Flores |

One of the more expensive Japanese restaurants in LA, but highly recommended so we gave it a try. The fish was fresh and delicious - we recommend the salmon Alaska rolls! The tempura prawns were spectacular.

very nice surprise

By Amichai B |

we had a very nice early dinner, great service, very nice set menus to chose from dishes were great , the sequence was very pleasant , fresh and well served

Some of the best fish from a sushi snob!

By Tom A |

Loved it! You know when you take that first bite and it is either going to make or break the meal(sushi nobs will know)...well this place was a taste of heaven. The place was small so we got there when they opened and didn't have a problem. I brought my kids, but not sure it would be comfortable with them at peak dinner time. It seemed like a place for hipsters and kids might not be as welcome...I could be wrong.

Hidden Sushi Gem in Downtown LA

By Bobby |

An unexpected find in LA, a city known for its upscale sushi restaurants. For an average of $55 per person, you get to indulge in toro, sea urchin, and shrimp. Whether you choose from the set menu or a la carte, sashimi and sushi dominate the offerings. The quality and taste of their dishes could easily be priced double in another establishment. Don't miss out!

Best sushi so far

By ohINDNJC |

I am not a sushi fan so I have little experience. Anyway this is the best sushi I ever had (out of 100 samples). This restaurant is well known for its quality in town.

Great way to get a variety of Sushi

By Chris B |

I was in town for business and went here before the crowds. I had the Nozawa and everything was great. The food came out at a nice pace and it was plenty to eat. Gratuity is included when you get the bill. Would definitely return when in LA again.

other reviewers are right. awesome sushi

By Linden H |

tried the "trust me" menu. was terrific. the tuna sashimi was outstanding. Toro hand and blue crab hand rolls were excellent. the marinated yellowtail was also different and delicious. Very reasonably priced considering the quality. I left completely full. The feel is young and hip.

A small busy restaurant with fabulous food

By Evelynne G |

We went here for lunch with cousins who go quite often It is very easy to park at this small restaurant and the restaurant staff are very friendly. The food is amazingly fresh and delicious. Every dish that came to the table was SO fresh and excellent. The Roll came to the table with the freshest most crunchy Seaweed wrapper. I have never eaten such a crunchy seaweed paper with fresh warm rice and delicious mixture of toro inside I can’t wait to go back to eat there

Woof! Don’t

By Michael L |

Really disappointing and Nozawa should be embarrassed. The fish wasn’t fresh, edamame was cold & soggy, the service was shockingly bad and there is no red wine on the menu. I’ve had better sushi in Omaha and my suggestion; skip this place.

Best sushi I've ever had

By mollypollywog |

A must stop spot when in LA. The "Trust Me" is a perfect meal - while the lines can be long (because it's amazing!) they do a great carry out. If you go early it's easy to get a table and there is counter service for singles or small parties.

Excellent!!!

By KahunaTim |

One of the best sushi restaurants I've ever been to. I love their fixed menu; it makes it really easy to order. Sushi is the highest quality and prices make it a very good value. Service is prompt, friendly and professional. Atmosphere is lively. I like sitting up at the bar. Great place for lunch.

Best Sushi We Have Every Had!

By DeRiz |

We travel the world for business and pleasure and adore Sushi. Yet we have never had any Sushi better than Sugarfish. We cannot come to LA without stopping in - it is that good. The seaweed wrappers are great (I tried them reluctantly as I didn't like them elsewhere), the warm loosely packed rice is unparalleled, matched with the highest quality fish. The "Trust Me" menu as determined by the chef is a must do! I almost hate to share this secret with others, but they are too good not to congratulate them with a review.

Business lunch

By Galen B |

Probably the best sushi I have had, in my life, and I eat a lot of sushi. Great service. Great green tea. Go here. You will not be disappointed.

GREAT food, fine service! Wish it was quiter

By Giuliano d |

This is a really a wonderful place, droped in by accident, glad I did. and I was impressed with the quality of the food and the efficiency of the service. Simple menu but highly recommended. 3 pillar selections, I ordered the trust me light. My only regret is the noise, I was alone and that's fine but the ambiance is torture is you have company. My waitress was Lina, she recommended my meal and my sake, she was competent and happy. Bottom line : food, service and were price great! Ambiance was not...

First sushi experience

By RoMcD2014 |

I went here with two sushi eating friends! They go regularly and are never disappointed so it was a good place to try sushi properly! I got the Trust Me set meal which was $32 and absolutely delicious. Every bit of it was so tasty, fresh and top quality. The service was fantastic. They currently have a “secret meal” which isn’t on the menu but my friend got it and it was excellent. It’s $52. Such a lovely place. They don’t take reservations so you may need to wait. I loved it.

Do not miss this restaurant!!

By Robin S |

Some of the best sushi I have ever tasted. Reservations are not taken, so be prepared to wait. There is a nice bar and outdoor seating area to sit in while waiting.

Great Service

By Laurie1171 |

I went to dinner alone and I sat at the bar seating. The service was super friendly and recommendations excellent. I will definitely go back to try more items on the menu and suggest if you are in the downtown area of Los Angeles to try this place out!

AMAZING - went back twice

By JohnWilding |

Loved this place and loved the slight twist on normal sushi restaurants. To my surprise the warm rice really gave it an extra dimension and i loved that it came pre sauced with no need for post soy dipping.

Great sushi for coeliacs but no sauce?!

By Lavinia |

Yummy sushi and it felt good value. All of the sushi I had was gluten free so I could have the same ‘trust me’ menu as my friends. However, they don’t have any gluten free soy or sauce options. It wouldn’t be very difficult for the company to make this a standard and without it, it makes Sugarfish look like they don’t care about inclusive eating and providing a great experience for gluten free people. So overall, well done on your sushi but be better in providing for coeliacs / dietary requirements.

BEST SUSHI EVER

By panamama |

Best sushi ever, hands down. No other comment. Nothing else matters. Who cares about the ambiance or the service when the fish is just this good.

Epicurean Sushi Feast!

By SuperChief49 |

As a lover of sushi, this had to be the very, very best sushi I ever had-inlcuding LA, SF, NYC, Chicago, Spain, etc. Very fresh, generous portions; well served separately rather than all at one time on a boat. A connoisseur of sushi will smile here; although not a huge selection, it does not matter and is not missed, as every price is succulent and fresh.

The focus is on very fresh fish at a fair price

By adalbert3 |

No frills sushi, where all the focus is on fresh fish. If you like all the fancy rolls, this place is not for you. However, if you enjoy a good selection of beautiful fish, you will leave pleased. We had the Tuna Sashimi, a Yellowtail Hand Roll, a Blue Crab Cut Roll and the Yellowtail, Snapper, Fluke, Amberjack, Albacore Belly and Sea Bass Sushi. All the sushi was beautiful and we loved the Tuna Sashimi. Only thing that I was not overwhelmed with was the Blue Crab Cut Roll---good, but not great. My wife loves the hand rolls because they don't have mayo. Our server was very sweet and anxious to be helpful. For me, this is the perfect lunch spot.

Largely overrated

By SysTooL |

My wife and I had dinner at the bar in this tiny sushi restaurant in downtown LA. We both had the Trust me menu (32 USD) which is basically edamame, sashimi, 8 sushis and 2 rolls. Curiously sushi rice was hot, which is quite surprising with cold fish on top but when we asked about that, we were told it was their concept. So 64 USD + VAT and 16% charges = 80 USD for a few sushis... it's downtown LA but I can't see all the fuss about it...

Best. Sushi. Ever.

By Ryan |

If you want the best, cleanest and freshest sushi ever, visit this place! Everything is amazing and the homemade soy sauce is incredible!

Excellent sushi

By Cowell76 |

The food here is absolutely first class, possibly the best sushi I've ever eaten. The stand out dish for me was the scallops. They were melt in the mouth and extremely fresh. The menu is fairly expansive so there is bound to be something for everyone if scallops are not your personal taste. Selection of drinks including range of sake is pretty good too. Only slight downside is possibly the setting. It's fairly functional as a location and very small. The food is immense, but the location does not immediately make it seem like a treat for a birthday. However I would personally take no frills over any unnecessary drama. Recommended

AMAZING!!!

By Roberta Bridges |

SUGARFISH by sushi nozawa is a top sushi spot known for its high quality Japanese cuisine. The menu features expertly crafted sushi with natural flavors. The attentive service and commitment to authenticity create an exceptional dining experience. prices can be on the higher side, and the restaurant's popularity may lead to longer wait times. It is a must visit for sushi lovers seeking a refined dining experience.

Unpretentious restaurant with high quality sushi

By Christina D |

We liked this place so much, we visited twice! My friend and I shared the large sampler and were relatively full. Traditional sushi style with the unique warm rice. The warm rice was just ok - but the fish was great. The restaurant is low key and great for socializing.

The Most Delicious Meal!

By marlaher |

I'm not a huge Sushi eater, but this food was damn good! My dinner date said it's easily the best Sushi he's had. We ordered the Trust Me Lite and still felt hungry, so we ordered a couple more pieces. Will probably order the Trust Me next time. Love that they decline more sauce, salt, etc. It's just that good! Great service too! They originally sat us at the bar, but gave us a table after we requested:)

Very good sushi in down town LA!

By maria92672 |

great place to go if you are in down town LA. the restaurant has a nice decor but it can get noise on pick hours! Good quality sushi for a good price.

Terrible service

By Saori |

I was in Santa Monica for my short vacation just a few days ago and was craving for sushi. I looked at some sushi places and this place has good reviews so I dropped by and the place was jammed. Fortunately i got a seat at the counter right away as I was on my own. Server greeted and explained about their menu. I had course dinner which was $46 and the quality was ok for California sushi. I stayed there for an hour and had one beer and the course menu. At the end of the night, I asked my check and server Jeffery - looks like Chinese American gave it to me. I looked my bill and there was "16% fee" on the bottom of the receipt. I live in Canada and never experienced even once that someone put auto gratuity on the bill. I asked Jeffery "you put auto gratuity on my bill" he said " yeah we put 16% gratuity on the bill for all customers and we share tips" That is absolutely LIE. I work in the restaurant industry. He did not even tell me there is auto gratuity on the bill when he dropped the bill. This guy Jeffery just assumed I will not give him tip because I'm an Asian girl who is ESL and a solo diner. I always give at least 20% tip or more if service is really good, but since they decided how much tip they should get which is only 16%, I put an exact amount of what they asked on the receipt. This is incredibly disappointing uncomfortable restaurant experience. I will never ever come back anyway as I live in Canada. If you are Asian and ESL, I strongly suggest not to go to this “authentic” sushi place. They don’t even have miso soup. They do not even know what Negitoro roll is. By the way I am from a country where sushi was born. Just so you know, this place is NOT even close to authentic sushi place. This place is a total joke.

2nd time to restaurant

By Lawrence C |

Great sushi but not a very Japanese, relaxing environment. Good for business lunch. This is a chain sushi restaurant with sushi prepared in a kitchen. It was started by the son of a star sushi chef. I have been to the original Japanese restaurant with the original father chef owner who is now retired.

Best Sushi I've Had Yet

By SaraK987 |

This was the best sushi I've ever had. I honestly haven't had anything even close to this good in years. Every piece of fish we had was fresh and delicious. My favorites were the tuna sashimi and the blue crab handroll...but like I said, everything was great. Service was great too.

best sushi ever!

By Lanna H |

We had the sushi series recommended by the waiter and we were not disappointed at all. Fish was absolutely perfectly fresh and i Loved the warm rice!

Best sushi I've ever had

By Sasha S |

No words can describe that melt-in-your-mouth taste with every piece of sushi. Just wow! 100% get the Chef's Menu and enjoy the some of the freshest fish you will ever have. Pricey but worth your money.

Good sushi but...

By tmboc |

So by the time the restaurant opened at 11:30am, there were at least 20 people waiting to get in. I was very excited to eat here as I love sushi and have heard great things about this place. We got the chef's choice for $27 to share for a start. I have to say that the sushi was good but no better and quite frankly not as good as some places. I don't get what all of the hubbub is about. Great service.

Small place but good sushi and limited sashimi -

By Fannie W |

The place is small and loud . Since the ceiling has no insulation it is a bit noisy. The sushi is warm and just the right temperature. Been there 6/7 times. Consistently the same. They pride on serving the sushi at the right temp. Different levels of sushi choice depending on how hungry you are. We always go for the largest- $45.

Simple, elegant, delicious sushi.

By pyramid_livin |

Sugarfish is simple, carefully seasoned and delicious sushi, where the extremely fresh fish itself is at the forefront of every dish. This is the kind of Sushi where every bite is savoured and enjoyed, giving the diner a chance to enjoy the minimal (but intense) flavours and textures of the fish.

I would fly to LA just to eat here

By D2gauth |

Seriously. I would. This is hands down the best sushi I've ever had. I ordered the "trust me" which was a great sampling of different menu items. Then I went back and ordered more of the tuna sashimi because it was that good. The sauce on it was delicious. The fish was fresh and perfectly cool. All the rice was warm and fresh. My waiter (I sat at the bar) was very attentive and offered suggestions. He also sent me with a to go cup of the iced green tea because it's fantastic too. My only complaint is that I was too full to try some of everything on the menu.

Best CHAIN sushi restaurant in town

By Msaber79 |

Its a consistent dining experience. The service is excellent, the restaurant is clean and the quality of the fish is high. Last time i was in the DTLA location i felt we were a bit rushed. We had the Omakase and it was being served faster than we could eat it and we usually eat right when it gets on the table. I would definitely go back but it wouldn't be on top of my go to sushi joints in DTLA.

My kind of sushi!

By Liz H. B. |

Real talk: I know nothing about sushi. I come from upstate New York where much of the sushi includes bacon and buff chick sauce. Until today, I really didn't think I liked sushi very much. Sugarfish is my kind of sushi. Just incredibly fresh, clean, lightly sauced, fish. I was also seated quickly and had super friendly service. Loved it!

Seriously amazing sushi!

By Fromjessicaskitchen |

The best sushi - especially the crab roll and lobster roll. The rice isn't gummy and has a nice tang to it from the vinegar, unlike many sushi places and the seaweed retains its crisp texture. Some of the best sushi I've ever had. It is it is pricier than most places and there may be a waitress actually on the weekend very well worth it if you love sushi. Plus Calabasas Commons is so pretty around while you wait.

Amazing service, even better sashimi

By tushita02 |

Definitely must try the 'trust me'. You get a little taste of all the sashimi and sushi. The albacore sashimi was definitely my favorite.

Quality at the top

By JM E |

Excellent sushi place with affordable and interesting set menus. Fish is fresh and actually melting in the mouth ... My second visit in two months... a repeated satisfactory expérience

Great, melt-in-your mouth sushi. Busy, small atmosphere

By Zacbarcelona |

This is as good or better than any sushi I have tried outside of Japan. But no reservations, so a 25 minute wait. And if you are just visiting, PARKING IS COMPLICATED. this is really downtown. Consider Uber. Nice servers, but they, and the atmosphere, are busy. Tip is included in the bill. Decoration is simple and elegant at the same time, that style the Japanese do so well. A bit crowded. Would strongly recommend.

Sushi

By RichFrank1224 |

We were in the area, a friend recommended. We got there around 6:30 pm. There was a 45 - 1 hour wait. No reservations: 1st come, 1st serve. Well, an hour and 1/2 later, we were finally seated. The management apologized for our wait. The food was actually better than expected, except for the value. A little pricey for what you get. I spent $60. and was still hungry. I went to another restaurant down the street. The sushi rice was not packed. So when you pick it up, the rice falls apart. However, the raw fish was high quality and serve slightly warm. The serve you a few at a time. It feels like you're eating appetizers.

Quality of food was consistent

By donna l |

The food was terribly disappointing. The fish was a fair. The presentation lacked any attempt at style. I sat at the sushi bar viewing people bus plates and dump them in the trash. The open kitchen was a mess of boxes, and a noisy, artless chaotic production. Needless to say- this is not something I could recommend. There is not "art" in this susi, not is there the flavor and texture of fresh fish.

Nothing like it.

By FlipMamaFoodie |

Recently visited the Brentwood location of Sugarfish and found the most fresh and delicious sushi ever. The sushi melted in your mouth. Gastornomic heaven!!! Can't say enough good things about this no nonsense approach to sushi.

Wow! Fantastic!

By Robin S |

We waited about 1/2 hour for a table, although they said it would be an hour wait. We sat outside and were able to order Saki and other drinks at the outdoor bar. We ordered the Trust Me dinner and the Nezaka Special and we were overwhelmed with the amazing fish dishes presented. Truly some of the best sushi we have had in a long time. I highly recommend this restaurant for amazing sushi!

Fantastic

By Mario |

This was our first time trying “traditional” sushi and it was great. We’ve been searching for a sushi place that could serve us and give us a feel for a more traditional styled sushi and this was the place. Was visiting from FL. Very recommended!

Trust Me - this place is amazing!

By Sarah B |

Six of us visited at the end of July 2018. Four of us had never been before, as we live in the UK and we’re visiting LA to see family. Our two family members recommended Sugarfish and touted it as THE BEST sushi place in LA. We certainly were not disappointed! We all had the Trust Me set menu, which was perfect as it meant we tried types of sushi we had never had before, and would have not perhaps chosen ourselves to order. The scallops were a highlight for me! I also tried Sake for the first time, both types, however I didn’t like it, but other members of my group did. I also was forced to learn how to use chopsticks, a skill I will now take forward with me! The staff were helpful and got us seated relatively quickly, with drinks being offered while we waited. The waitress was attentive, friendly and had a good sense of humour. When in LA again, which we most definitely will be, I would have Sugarfish at the top of my list!

Not authentic

By Lay Kheng N |

Over rated and disappointing. Who serves fresh salmon sashimi cut into very tiny bits (smaller than bite sizes) and sitting in sesame oil?

THe best.....

By jak n |

I have been going to any of their sites for 5 years. And must say never disapointed. I always have the trust me special. It end with the crab roll.. OMG... what a way to finish.. This place is a go to for my daughter and me. Its our place... so I am a little bias.. But But its fantastic....lol

Best sushi I have ever tasted!!!!!

By Sharon H |

Best sushi ever, the nori(algae) was super crispy and the flavors all collided deliciously and the restaurant itself was quite nice itself 11 out of 10 delicious.

cosy place, good sushi but not the best, overrated

By Nergis A |

we went for dinner. there were no place so we gave our name and went back after 1,5 hours. the place is cosy and stuff is nice. ı think the sushi is good but not the best as it is said. ı think it is overrated.

Favorite lunch

By lileeewhoo |

Lines are a God awful wait every day, but it's so worth it once you sit down and eat! They keep it quick for you with courses coming quickly one after the other. No complaints on anything Sugarfish has to offer; literally everything on the menu is good. We always keep it simple and just get the Trust Me or Nozawa. You get such a great sampling of everything and trust me nothing is bad. For a chain, the fish is always fresh and taste delicious without dousing in soy sauce and wasabi. Love that the sushi rice always comes out slightly warm - it really gives the fish an added buttery layer of taste.

Good for date night

By slgbug |

Went here with my husband while we were on vacation in LA. This place was awesome! We arrived around 6pm on a Saturday night and were immediately seated at the bar. The place has a very casual vibe. The waitstaff were very friendly. The bartender gave us some helpful tidbits about how to best enjoy each dish (such as to eat the hand rolls right away while the seaweed is still crispy). We each ordered the Trust Me entree. Each item was delicious! The yellowtail nigiri was awesome. There was a hint of lemon on it that made it special. Also enjoyed how dishes kept coming out as soon as they were ready. Highly recommend.

The best Sushi I have had on the West Coast!

By staceylevasseur |

My husband is somewhat new to sushi but I have been eating it forever! He was nervous because the menu is very limited and he didn't see anything he could order (think rice bowls, tempura, etc.). We order the Trust Me menu and shared it and he was completely amazed at the flavor of each dish. We loved the Tuna Sashimi so much that we immediately ordered another one for dessert! What a great find, very simple setting with amazingly fresh and delicious fish. Will be back for sure!

I can go everyday

By Erica N. |

So everyone raves about the blue crab. But it is not my favorite. I actually replace the blue crab hand roll with the salmon hand roll or hamachi. I've visited LA for only four days and I was there two times! It is a great value for what you get and I highly recommend you get a "trust me". Enjoy!!!

Trust me, the trust me is good!

By Cesar G |

I did the "trust me" and it was good, quality as well as quantity. They cut me short a peace but not a big deal (they where extremely busy.. Not that this justifies). But all good over all the waitress/bar tender was great! By the way the restaurant does not have a sushi bar (as the rest normally do).

guys fix your rice!

By Agata P |

This is bit of a sad story since the fish quality was excellent but sadly rice was to warm ( it over rolled the fish)and loose. I been to Japan twice and I have dine in fine sushi restaurants I I really appreciate a good sushi. So guys please do fix your rice because it's making your sushi average and your fish quality is much above it. Hope it was just today and I been unlucky.....

Excellent sushi

By Toni G |

There is always a wait for four at SugarFish, but it's worth it. We get the "trust me" and it does not disappoint. It is so delicious that often, we get additional crab hand rolls. Lovely and friendly service.

Most Delicious Sushi I've Eaten In YEARS!

By SMGabriel |

I stayed in LA for a night with my husband and I was so excited to be able to have such a large array of restaurants to choose from, but my taste palette was screaming for sushi. I quickly did some research and found Sugarfish, which was fairly close, walking distance in a hotel my husband and I was staying at and decided to take the dive. The "Trust Me," food option on the menu was seriously unforgettable. It was dynamite. I would recommend this restaurant to all sushi lovers in the area!

Excellent sushi!

By swimmerNYC |

Perfect sushi experience at a reasonable price. Suggest to try specials proposed by the restaurant. It was delicious!

Top Sushi

By Rafael B |

Extremely fresh tender fish. That being said, one must not say much more. High quality sushi, with various menus to choose from, cozy ambience, good serving, always crowded. It is expensive, yes, but you will not get disappointed, because what you will get is really one of the best sushi experiences in the US.

Takes Sushi to a New Level

By Rutman |

Surprisingly small venue so no wonder you have to wait for a table! I had the Trust Me menu and it was fabulous. I enjoyed getting the courses individually and actually never experienced Sushi rice warm. The hand rolls were really unique and delicious. The service was very friendly and helpful. Since I was one, I sat at the bar and did not have a feeling of being crammed. I will definitely return!

Perfect for the sushi and sashimi lover

By lpk325 |

Visited my friend in KTLA and she suggested we walk to dinner and had made reservations at SUGARFISH [I actually don't remember if they allowed reservations or we just walked in at the right time]. The place definitely wowed me. I love sushi and sashimi and the preparations here were just mouth-watering and went above expectations. Really top quality with some of what was served literally melting in my mouth. The pricing could go up and down depending on what you order but they had a set that was pretty reasonable at around $40. It's like a well-paced meal where the dishes are served one at a time, just enough for you to savor what has come before. They are also pretty flexible about replacements in case there is something you didn't want. I will definitely go back. There usually is a wait and there was a bit of line when left.

Good but Pricey

By SpainNYHollywood |

This is a good sushi place to take your date. However, I thought that the price was a bit too high for the quality of sushi they served.

Absolutely recommend

By Thebest |

I rated sugar fish 5 out of 5 because it is an amazing experience staff are so nice, and food is delicious, definitely recommend even for the whole family!

outstanding

By eyeu |

Pretty much a set sushi menu..very very busy...the sushi comes with a "how to eat it" instructions...Just fabulous!! Highly recommended ..if you can get in. Very very fresh..flavors just roll off your tongue...

Not authentic Japanese

By hobolinda |

The quality of fish was fine, but the presentation was austere, and the temperature of the sushi rice was overly warm to the point of being straight out of the rice cooker! What? The old-school traditional sushi chefs in Japan would not even let women prepare nigiri as they (I don't agree) said the temperature of women's hands is too warm! The rice also is too loose to handle any sauce put on top. Speaking of which, too much use of the Yuzu Pepper on the scallop sushi. The tuna sashimi had sauce on it and was in chunks, more like a tuna poke style. Then we ordered hirame sashimi, and it came in a square bowl, in little bits, no garnish...wow...I usually don't leave negative restaurant reviews, but this place was a disappointment for me. Many American customers seemed to be enjoying the place, though!

Wow! Just wow

By kidfree |

This is sushi for people who love sushi. The fish is delectable and i loved the warm rice. Each bite was bursting with flavor and silky If you like fancy rolls with lots of spicy mayo and eel sauce ( which I like also) this may not be your favorite. But i have not stopped thinking about it since we went. The seaweed on the hand rolls was ridiculously good. We went on a Saturday night to La Brea location at 6 and waited maybe 15 minutes. Service was brisk but friendly. Can’t wait to go in NY when I get home They are right just trust them and you will not be sorry

Amazingly fresh Sushi

By JuliusCaesarHelsinki |

This is my favourite sushi chain here in LA. The fish is amazing and the warm rice just melts in your mouth. I have had only great experiences with them. Love you SUGARFISH!

Good Sushi...But you can ToGo!

By Helen K |

I used to love SugarFish and I still do, but instead of eating there, I honestly just ToGo/TakeOut/Delivery. Great quality of fish and excellent presentation. For people to graduate from rolls and try nigiri/sashimi especially, the presentation of the ToGo box comes with explanation of the type of fish and the type of sauces to use (just salt or soy sauce and wasabi, or picked ginger, etc.) When it first opened, I used to go to the one in DTLA at least once a month with friends, but now, we honestly just do take out. It's not worth the wait and there are thankfully multiple locations in WeHo, LaBrea (near Mid-Wilshire Museums), Beverly Hills, Marina Del Rey, etc.

Amazing Sushi

By luvluxvacations |

Amazing sushi, great atmosphere and reasonable prices. I have always been able to get a table but I think it is because I have gone on off peak hours

Not all it is cracked up to be

By Julie L |

My friend and I searched for a sushi restaurant in LA while at a conference. The reviews were largely good for sugar fish so we went. I was highly disappointed ! The small, very crowded, dimly lit restaurant was over priced and we were very rushed. It was similar to an assembly line......get em in, get em out !! I literally was almost touching the patron at the next table. Then the bill came !! Holy cow !!!!! I would not have minded paying that kind of money if the waitresses acted like they cared at all !!!!

Dinner.

By Paul F |

Omni hotel recommended it and it’s a short walk. Uphill on the way home. Is busy but I only had a short wait. Staff was very friendly No vodka but I survived on a beer. The menu is great with lots of choices. I chose one of the full meals which includes sushi, shashimi, and hand rolls. All was fresh and wonderful. No doubt it was today’s catch. A great experience with reasonable price

Bad experience

By Sylvia P |

We arrived around 9:30. We ordered some dishes and the waiter came back saying the salmon was over. We're starving. We were talking and a waiter left the bill on our desk. This last dinner in Los Angeles was frustrating.

Surprisingly good!!

By John M |

OK! Let's be honest - I am not a mega sushi restaurant fan although I do eat it regularly. I often find the ordering of sushi at a restaurant quite challenging - so much choice!! The hotel recommend this place for a group of four and off we went. It's not the most inspiring place when you enter but pleasant enough. The waiter advised the set dinner and for the last of a better idea we ALL agreed!! This turned out to be an excellent idea as the restaurant proceeded to serve up some of the best sushi I have ever eaten - with one exception. We were told to eat the rolls as soon as they arrived to ensure they were crispy. This we did - to no avail as all four found this the most disappointing course. The fish was the only "fishy" taste of the entire dinner and it was simply not nice! With a few drinks all round including service $79 each. Well worth it and recommended for a casual evening (roll apart).

Just like sushi in Japan

By Joel G |

If you love perfect pristine fish, you will love Sugarfish. We were at the Beverly Hills location. Room is simple but filled with extremely good looking people. Service was friendly and attentive. But, this place is all about the fish. It reminds me of eating sushi when I was in Japan. First of all you'll notice that the rice is room temperature rather than ice cold. And the presentation while simple and straightforward speaks for itself in the quality of the fish and the execution of the sushi. They take all the decision making out of your hands with their Trust Me menu. You simply sit down and wait for course after course of sushi to appear. Each course brings a different combination of texture and flavor. If you're expecting U.S. style sushi with tons of avocado and sauces, this place is not for you. Alcohol is limited to wine, beer, and sake. The prices are extremely reasonable. Highly recommend

Unique

By Davis K |

The warm rice with the cold fish is the perfect combination. None of their sushies needed soy sauce or anything else..it was perfect as I got it

had to see what the hype was about

By BellaFella82 |

I had to see what the hype was about. The presentation is just so lovely. And the sushi was just so yummy.

Sugarfish Stay Away !

By Hudson Y |

Stay Away at all costs! I read the review of the NY Times "Testing the Limits of Trust, and Sushi, at Sugarfish" but thought that no restaurant could be this bad. And it has so many reviews that are positive I figured Id give it a try. The review from the NY Times was spot on. Horrible food. Uneatable fish. No semblance of sushi esthetic or beauty . Horrible customer service. No sense of hospitality. Essentially the worst sushi dinner Ive ever had. First, the fish is not sushi grade. More like fish you get from a grocery store. The rice is just simply stale, filled with too much vinegar and the consistency is just plain wrong. The food is made in an assembly line, premade, and presented with one hand while looking at the kitchen for the next shout out from the kitchen. Its like being in a fast food burger joint "Burger Burger Burger Up". The food presented all tasted the same. Every dish no matter what was on the plate was bland, no flavor, the fish was cold the rice hot the sauce no relation to what you were asked to eat adding no value except to add a coverup for the striking sloppy plates with fish cut with a dull knife and tossed onto the plate. The customer service was abysmal. There are no reservations but you are put on an automated waitlist and told to come to the restaurant as your reservation comes to the upper end of the list. Once we arrived we waited 45 mins after they told us to come and we had a choice to sit at the bar (not sushi bar which doesnt exist) or wait another 15-20mins. The focus was get people in and get them out fast! Covid protocols and social distancing were not in place. And when we finished our sushi we were quickly given the check before even asking if we wanted dessert or tea or anything else. Avoid Sugarfish at all costs

American Sushi without fancy American flavour

By keih311 |

Sushi restaurants in US is roughly divided into 2 classes. Truly Japanese style with Japanese imported fish and other foods, or US style sushi such as fancy rolls and surprising different US sushi (mainly owned by Chinese or Korean chefs). This sushi restaurant is something middle of these two. All fish and rice and others are come from US but stick to Japanese style. Of course this is not an expensive sushi restaurant, but I really enjoyed sushi here. During my short visit to LA, I visited twice to taste American Sushi. Omakase is a good order here. If more than two people are together, sharing Omakase and several other rolls and foods is a good idea. アメリカの寿司はアメリカにしか求められないものが食べられるところが一番です。このレストランは、普通のファンシーな巻物のあるアメリカ風ではないですが、アメリカの原料を良くまとめていると思います。

Amazing food, rushed service

By OnAir27158580247 |

I love sushi, and sugarfish makes some really great food, but I was extremely disappointed in how rushed I felt while eating there. I dined with a friend at 8pm on a Wednesday, and it felt like our waitress was trying to get us in and out as fast as humanly possible. Next time I think I will go to a different sushi restaurant with a more evolved atmosphere.

Amazing Sushi

By PaPhillyfamily |

We ordered the nozawa choice menu. It was a $42 pre fixe. Every piece of sushi and every roll, without exception, was delicious. We love sushi and have been to many excellent restaurants but this was great and the price was exceptionally reasonable for the quality. We will definitely return when we go back to LA.

Great Fish. Great Service.

By Jason F |

The place was busy at 7:30pm on a Thursday night so that was a good sign. I was solo so got in at the bar quickly. Ordered the $35 dollar sushi meal and was very pleased. Great fresh fish. Great service. And good portion for what you get. I have been to some of the best and most expensive sushi places and this one is a good one for reasonable price. Will be back next time I am in LA area.

Good selection of sushi - well prepared and presented

By rick19348 |

I selected the Trust me menu and was not disappointed. The dinner consisted of 4 servings of a variety of sushi as well as rolls. The servings were of good size and filling. The restaurant is small and did not accept reservations. I imaging there could be a wait at certain times. The restaurant was highly recommended by several colleagues and they were right.

Highly recommended

By Kitty Mo |

Do book ahead at busy times. Everything is made to order and they do a take away service. Sugarfish only serve sushi. They do not serve tempura or noodle dishes. We had the middle size plate called 'trust me' at $33 each. It was more than enough food person. Each sushi came in pairs or on its own over what seemed like a long time. The seaweed paper was crisp and the rice still warm. The crab hand wrap, my first, was sweet and delicious. All the sushi was of an excellent quality.

Pretty good

By Ivan H |

Did a Google search for best sushi in LA and this was one of the ones that popped up, tried calling for reso but they didn't take any so we figured this would be a good spot to go to. The first night we went it was an hour and a half wait so we went across the street to Bottega Louie which was amazing. Came here the next evening a bit earlier and only waited a few minutes. The trust me menu was great, fish was very fresh. The only thing disappointing was that they didn't have hot sake and no cocktails either - just beer and cold sake. Their drink menus definitely need work. But if you are just going for sushi this is pretty good.

BEST.SUSHI.EVER!!!!!!!

By Doon2013 |

I had gone there for lunch with my boss. We waited for about 20 minutes for a table but it was so worth it! The servers are very helpful and knowledgeable. I have never had sushi that truly melts in your mouth until going to Sugarfish! We had ordered a few things to share. We ordered too much and still couldn't leave without finishing everything despite being full. It was THAT good!!! It's expensive but well worth it.

Great Sushi, great service

By Poncho B |

Really one of the best sushi I've ever tried, and the service is really extraordinary. The menu is rather complete, I recommend the Nozawa by far with some wine.

Dinner Trust Me, I trusted

By Virago750 |

Wow. Great service, easy seated at bar. The sake recommendation was excellent. I took the Trust Me option and was not disappointed. Having been to Japan, Hong Kong, etc. I found this quality of fish to be the best I've had in the US. Servers explained all the dishes, and they kept coming... Sake was more than I expected...cold, smooth and refreshing.

amazing and fresh!

By teresa |

best sushi ever! went here with a party of 6 and we were not allowed to he seated until partybhad arrived. we decided to get 3 of the large set combos (the one that's for 2 people & forgot what it's called now). the quantity was small but the quality was out of this world. the presentation was pleasing and the taste was phenomenal! if you're a sushi lover, this is for you

Some of the best sushi in LA

By LAAtty |

Great quality sushi. Go with the Trust Me menu. The course will just come. Most are pre sauced. Note that rice is warm so don't squeeze too hard. Downtown is much easier to get into than westside outposts.

Good fast sushi

By Mena K |

Excellent sushi. The combo platters were excellent Only thing I didn't like was I overheard another group walk in and they didn't have their entire pert and the restaurant wouldn't let the sit at a table! It was nearly empty. That was a disappointment but otherwise good sushi.

Always Excellent!

By Rebecca |

No trip to Los Angeles would be complete without at least a meal or two at sugarfish! The servers are always attentive and friendly, the menu includes a vast variety of dishes, and the ambiance is always excellent! They have a number of menus such as the trust me lite (perfect for lunch) and trust me which allows you to try a number of different dishes! The fish is always so fresh and tender, and is complemented perfectly with sauces and marinations. The food is very well prepared and presented! Never a disappointment!

Awesome sushi

By Jasisace |

Very popular venue - we grabbed some sushi / sashimi to go. One of the nicest meals I've ever had - excellent presentation & just delicious. If you love sushi & are in DTLA this is the place to go!

They don't take ressys...but for God's SAKE wait.

By ZerohF |

Order the $45 tasting menu (the top one with the little extras) and be prepared for sushi that literally melts in your mouth. Take note of menu 'warnings' that suggest you lay off the soy sauce if there is another sauce on the dish. Honestly, I didn't bother with the soy sauce at all really...would've been like seasoning wagu beef with Heinz 57. But the ginger? Super fresh so def ask for 2nds as it's a a perfect compliment to every dish. I'm not a Sake fan but my dining partner was and he noted that their selection was very good. Service here is a great balance of cool and professional while also being down to earth and friendly. A real value for the quality of the food. Oh...PS...thank you for not dousing the edamame with salt.

Good sushi but limited

By Soakaroo |

The sushi here was very good and fresh. Only thing is that there aren't any cooked appetizers. The selection was very limited so i couldn't feed anything to my 4 year old except a bowl of white rice and eel. Overall great food but dont recommend for young kids

Good sushi

By MrFiodie |

I came alone sitting on the bar - my favorite way in sushi places - as I love to see the preparation. Here it is not the case. I did not go for their "trust me" pre picked menus - did not like the combination there. Started with sashimi tuna that was wonderful- it is served in a yuzo and green onions - unlike many other sushi places. It was great. Followed by a yellowtail sushi which was ok no more. Unagi sushi was very good. As all reviewers wrote the rice here is warm which i liked. The rolled - one with crab and one with scallops were good but not great. Liked the scallops better. The last one was albacore belly sushi - came with its own sour delicate sauce was the best.

Best sushi experience and real value for money

By Ana M |

Sugar fish is a great sushi experience. The menu has 3 options where you can choose from a fixed menu. Every option is excellent and is a real value for your money. They simplified a sushi dining experience with few options but everything on the menu is really good.

Very Good Sushi-Small Space

By ElkGroveChris |

This was my second visit to Sugarfish, first time was at the Santa Monica location. That first visit was exceptional, the sushi was sublime. While very good, the sushi this time did not have the wow factor. Maybe I had too high of expectations from my first visit a few months ago. Really, I am just splitting hairs here as it was really good stuff. Cramped quarters like their other location, nice decor though. Staff somewhat aloof like other location. I will be back in town next week, might try one of their other locations.

Very nice sushi, but terrible environment (see review)

By BandBVoyager |

THE GOOD: > Excellent service > Good sushi & sashimi, but somewhat expensive THE BAD: > Horrendously loud. Earplugs a must. Conversation impossible. Schedule appointment with your audiologist after dining here, since by the time you finish you are likely to have suffered irreparable hearing loss. There is NO decor on the walls. All minimalist concrete and metal. Just a few acoustic absorbent tiles, wall hangings and a painting or two might help with the unbearable noise problem, but management obviously doesn't care since our waitress confirmed that previous complaints have fallen on deaf ears (pun intended.)

Great sushi

By Pureum K |

Excellent sushi at a reasonable price. Ambiance is nice. Only downside is that it gets quite busy and the servers go crazy and forget stuff. Overall, nice sushi restaurant. If you are in doubt which sushi place you want to go, you can't go wrong with this restaurant just make sure you avoid the busy hour.

Outstanding!

By BullChaser |

Sugar fish is a very quaint little sushi bar on seventh Street in downtown LA. Just a short walk from the intercontinental hotel it is eclectic, professional, and anything you could ever imagine in a small place that has about 15 tables. I highly recommend Sugarfish to anyone wanting sushi/shashimi in the downtown LA area.

Finally 5 star sushi review!

By Alex G |

Rarely give 5 star reviews to sushi places, but this one in Downtown LA is legit. Had fairly quick business lunch right at the counter/sushi bar. Very busy, and no reservations, so we we're lucky to get seated at 11:45 am. Service is brusque and efficient, "trust me" $27 lunch menu was just the right amount and perfectly executed. Toro and crab hand rolls stood out, tuna sashimi, and all other selections tasted fresh, and just right. No complaints. I wish we would have this concept in Chicago. CA coast does have better and fresher sushi than Chicago to begin with, of course.

Yum

By Runawayblond |

The food is so delicious, they have set menus with recommendations, I chose the moderate choice and I have to say the tuna sashimi was mouth watering

Birthday dinner

By Ryan M |

I went sugar yesterday to have a dinner with my girlfriend. The food was pretty good but the service wasn’t up to par with the price you pay. My girlfriend had told the server it was my birthday in front of me to try to say that were here for a special time and looked at her like an idiot. We had gotten the first sashimi plate which was good but it was pretty lite. The salmon didn’t taste super fresh, in the reason the would cover it in soy and ponzu to hide the taste. The other 6 pieces were really good toro, yellow tail, and salmon were great. We had ordered more food which was great but got skipped over by other people cause we didn’t look ritzy. The problem I have is the service I was here with all the intentions on celebrating a special day. When we got the bill I realized the servers don’t work off tips and that they get a 8% percentage. I have worked in the hospitality industry for the last 13 years and I think here lies the problem. I just wanted to have a good date and share the day cause we are both so busy with work and it kinda ruined it for us both. Hope this helps. Great sushi but just a weird vibe. -Ryan Martinez

Love this sushi

By lmb32 |

Delicious handrolls served efficiently. This is one of my favorite sushi concepts. The toro and yellowtail rolls are my favorites. They have set menus and a la carte rolls, can’t go wrong either way. Simple and delicious menu.

Good fish but simple and not much of it

By fattyspecial |

We had the $37 trust me plates. The fish was definitely very fresh and tasted good but there wasn't much to it and the portion size was very small. Just fish, rice and seaweed. The server was really nice but for $110 USD after tax and automatically included service charge I would say the value is pretty horrible. Bottom line: wouldn't return.

The best sushi I've had in my entire life

By clct75 |

I had one weekend in LA and I went to this restaurant twice. Yes, it's that good. I had the 'trust me" menu and every item was pure sushi bliss. No matter what time of day you go, you'll have a wait, but it's worth it.

Amazing sushi place

By Maria G |

So fresh, tasty and value for money! Excellent service. To avoid the queue is better to go have early lunch at 12.00.

Best sushi

By Allison K |

Had the best sushi meal here. The rice was warm and the fish melted in my mouth. I recommend the "trust me" selection. The albacore belly sushi was unbelievable and highly recommend that as well.

"Trust me" take out a was awesome!

By 99dmf523 |

Got a couple of "Trust me" to go boxes to take to the beach and they were perfect! Sushi was delicious and the box has everything you need to do a picnic on the beach.

Top quality shusi!

By TazZz K |

Tldr best shusi in town and best shusi i had. If its your first time there, i would recomend to go with the trust menus. You must visit if you are in LA or in Santa Monica!

Delish

By Brinicward |

We really loved the tuna and the salmon. Best we have had. Everything else was good, high quality. We didn’t love the hand rolls. The service was good.

A real experience

By Luis M |

This place is a culinary experience, if you want to know the true Japanese food, you should definitely visit it.

BASIC Sushi

By Fordstaff |

Not the best. Not the worst. Just all ok. It all feels a little trendy and that means, in my experience, that you don't get really exciting fish options. It feels basic. The fish was fresh and the service was impeccable. I was just hoping for a little more variety than the usual (salmon, tuna & yellowtail). I understand that this restaurant might not be marketing toward the more daring or experienced sushi diner....

Sugarfish Downtown

By Michael544 |

Great service and great prices for what you get. It's like an omakase for $42. Every fresh and deelish!

It's Like I never had Sushi

By Ketsiat |

If you haven't tried Sugarfish and you are wondering whether it's worth it, it is. Go. Do it. You won't regret it. I thought I knew sushi until I sat at the bar and told the chef to give me the works menu. My friend warned me that going with the smaller menu leaves feeling regret. "You won't want it to end." She was right. I could've sat there and eaten their sushi for hours. Loved every bite and didn't care about anything else, like the stark décor. I thought I'd want a less sterile looking environment but, again, you be saying what I was saying at the end of the meal: who cares about the décor? I could've eaten sushi like that on an abandoned bus.

just OK

By optimator |

First: the fish is really top quality and not so expensive. The dirinks, however, are quite expensive. I have 2 big complaints: they force a fixed 16% tip, and the sushi rice was wet and fell apart (not a traditional rice). I asked for one leaf of shiso as my wife has never had it, and the server said it wasn't possible (they have it and it costs very little).

Amazing. Simple. Exquisite.

By Shredly |

It was excellent. Trust me. Pun intended. Some people complain about the warm rice...but I thought it was different and unique......and did nothing but enhance the nigiri. It was good. Same goes for the place in Brentwood. I love for them to open one in San Diego....but it would be so crowded it would be a bummer.

Sushi

By dsj5777 |

We were staying at the Sheraton Grand around the corner and wanted to try a recommended sushi place. In fairness, probably not the place to bring your partner who hasn’t eaten a lot of sushi. We both ordered the largest “trust us” set and while several were excellent, some like the shrimp and scallop were just okay to me. A lot of sushi in the set but priced accordingly.

Fresh and amazingly delicious and innovative sushi/sashimi

By Tara P |

I dined at Sugarfish last week when I was in town for my college reunion. They do not take reservations which was perfect for me. I sat at the sushi bar. The other patrons at the bar were very friendly. The sushi and sashimi was fresh, innovative (with sauces on some of them) and absolutely delicious. I highly recommend.

Fresh sashimi but left feeling hungry

By Familytravelmaven |

The waiter recommended the Trust Us selection of sashimi/sushi which cost us $32 per person. The fish was incredibly fresh and the rice warm. They also do a nice job pacing the plates so you get to savor each bite as it comes out. The seaweed rolls were warm and crispy. Even with the nice selection, at the end we were still hungry and wanting more. Don't go to Sugarfish with a teenage boy, unless they have eaten something beforehand.

Delightful and affordable

By Tiffine |

The sashimi here is great quality and I love the set menus, really delicious quality. Highly recommend it. The place does not take reservations.

Bar none best sushi I’ve had

By charles h |

The albacore belly was to die for. The other sushi was Equally extraordinary. Can’t recommend it enough!!!

Always Trust Sugarfish!

By AnitaNewportBch |

One of the best reasons to come DTLA. We scored a table quickly and enjoyed our meal, cannot say enough about the freshness and presentation. Sugarfish is the draw in this area and we can always rely on great fresh sushi. Trust me - we are coming back!

TRUST ME and go for the TRUST ME menu

By Stephanie C |

Whenever people tell me they don't like sushi, I always argue that that's because they've never had GOOD sushi. Its impossible not to love sushi after trying the trust me menu here. I lived in LA for 9 years and this was my go-to for sushi nights. The best textures, tastes, temperatures, and freshest catches. The trust me menu ruined me for cheap sushi and it haunts my dreams to this day. I cannot wait to return to my beloved trust me menu.

Not for someone who wants good food, good treatment, at a reasonable price

By AlbertandSuzy |

Sugarfish came highly recommended by some local friends. But my first impression of any restaurant is how they treat the single customer. Answer here: poorly. When I asked for takeout, as I had just gotten off work, I was told that I "needed to experience" the sushi. When I politely explained that I just wanted sushi, the hostess/server was offended. She showed me a menu, and then appeared to be offended that I chose the least ($31) expensive item on the menu. I was then told there would be a wait, so I put in my order, gave them the $31, and came back later. I was stunned to receive a box that looked like a big Sees candy box, and probably accounted for at least some portion of the ridiculous price. Yes, the rice was warm, yes, the fish seemed to be fresh. But it was a paltry amount of food. I commend my Los Angeles friends for being able to tolerate substandard service and mediocre food. But I would never recommend this place. Clearly, they view the single eater as not a good enough revenue source to treat with courtesy.

Delicious sushi - Oddly dissonant setting

By jayelkay62 |

I arrived solo on a very busy evening and was able to score a seat at the bar without too much fuss. Very hip restaurant - almost too hip. There's something to be said about a spare/stark setting to allow even greater focus on the sushi and less on the music, the lighting, the people-watching, the scene. I ordered the Trust Me and thoroughly every dish and the presentation by wait staff. I happen to really like the house ponzu sauce which accompanied several of the dishes - Tuna Sashimi and Albacore in particular. Yellowtail with lemon juice was so clean and balanced between the unctuous fish and the acid bite of the lemon. Favorite of the night was the Snapper with citrus salt. So simple, so elegant. Best bite among many. Loved the Blue Crab hand roll as well. Would come back again for the delicious food.

The service and experience

By Sankroo |

Simple entrance - warm welcome asked to place a seat at the bar while ordering some small dishes. Attentive service and bar staff of whom mostly are students. Keeping an eye on me while the place got really crowded and served me the finest Japanese dishes and wine. I just enjoyed the entire service sequence and performance of the staff while sipping on my wine and enjoyed the food. Almost made me missed my long haul international flight to Asia. Really a suburb experience - kudos!

Decent sushi in a modern setting

By Quantumlondon |

This busy restaurant has a good choice of sushi. I had their recommended menu ($40) which consisted of several pieces of sushi and a couple of hand rolls. Ingredients look fresh, particularly the scallops with a ponzu dressing. I should return to try other dishes. (I did ask for uni but they did not have any that day which at least shows that they appreciate that it has be as fresh as possible!)

Ditto-a great spot for Sushi

By Mark A |

Not sure I can say anything that hasn't been said before in the other reviews. I was in LA in early March for a meeting and SugarFish was about a 10 minute walk from the convention area. There was a wait but we went across the street to a bar for a drink and then came back. Our server was pleasant and friendly. I really enjoyed the "trust me" menu and it thought it was a good value. I also appreciated the fact that (gratuity, tip) was included in the price of the food.

Smooth!

By upintheairmom |

Short wait, so we grabbed a drink nearby and they texted us when ready. Even a "hey, almost time" text. Not a bad bite in the place. Terrific handrolls. These sushi snobs loved everything. Stick with the junmai daigonjo sake :)

Amazingly fresh sushi in downtown LA location

By Johnanddon1 |

A LA local recommended this sushi favorite in downtown LA. The server was very friendly and accommodated our party of four in a booth as requested. We all opted for the TRUST ME set omakase menu. This included several pieces of negri and some sashimi. We loved it all, expecially the handroll which was very fresh and the paper crisp. The menu was coursed out which was surprising given the busy casual vibe. One of the best sushi offerings for the price. The sake menu was very adequate and affordable. Highly recommend. Would have given a 5 if more variety in choices.

Nice but overrated

By pigsyACT |

This restaurant was very highly rated and (was told) frequented by many celebrities. It is not very big in size and booking is not accepted, so first come first serve. There is always a queue waiting, we got there around 10 PM on a week night and still had to wait. Can't commend about the decor, as the place was so dimly lit I could even see the food in front of me. I ordered the $34 "Trust Me" set meal, which is a 5 course sushi banquet. The different types of sushi were interesting and of high quality. There is an air of arrogance, patrons are not allowed to add any more flavoring, such as pepper and salt, to their food. While I found the food was good and the service reasonable but it is overrated. I can't say it is a great restaurant.

Yummy fresh sushi and great service

By Jan L |

I traveled to LA for a conference and saw this restaurant on TripAdvisor as it was close to my hotel. Due to the eastern and Pacific time change I went in around 4 PM and it was not busy at all so I sat at the small bar. The staff were very attentive and friendly. They were helpful in making decisions about the menu items. I got a dry Saki cold, which I was not used to, but it was very delicious. I also got the try-me light, which was a perfect amount of food for one person. The sushi is incredibly fresh and delicious and just melts in your mouth. I really enjoyed the handroll which I’m not used to eating but the seaweed wrap was crispy and the sushi soft and yummy. I may just eat here every night. Strongly recommend. I would definitely go here again and highly recommend anyone to try it out.

Totally unimpressed

By BBW95630 |

So... in town for a conference - looked up sushi restaurants near Westin Bonaventure in LA - it was rated very high - why? Still not sure - very assembly line type of restaurant- ordered the "trust me" - why bother - in and out in not even 45 minutes and most of that was waiting for our server - food was okay - not at all what we were hoping for - not your expected sushi roll - very very unimpressive- won't be back!

Birthday Boy Loved it so much we had to go twice...

By Rebecca Z |

It was a one night stay in LA for my boyfriends birthday and Clippers game. We went before the game on a Friday night. Not too crowded around 5, so we opted to sit at the bar. The service was good. They explained the options rather well and kept us on track for time after 3 bottles of Sake. The quality of the fish was amazing, the warm rice was not something we had experienced before and that too was amazing. The minimal ingredients and execution let the flavors speak for themselves. It was a great experience that had to be repeated the next day for lunch before we headed back home to San Diego.

Best sushi in the city !!!!

By Ewa R |

Amazing sushi, great service and nice atmosphere. Sushi is just fantastic everything we tried was delicious. Restaurant doesn’t take reservations we waited over 1h in the line but it was totally worth it!

This restaurant was highly recommended to me by a lot of my friends. I had such an incredible experience and will definitely return whenever I am back in LA. We went a little late than normal for lunch so the wait was only 15 mins. The restaurant is really small so I would recommend going early as I am sure the space fills up at lunch. The menu is very small but everything is amazing. We had the "Trust me" meal and do not regret it. The fish was so fresh and it melted in your mouth. My favorite were the hand rolls the seaweed was so crispy!

Trust Me

Simple plan for the restaurant. A modern-ish take on the Omakase of traditional sushi places. We both went with the Trust Me, added a plate of Unagi and had some Nigori sake to go along with it. Quite the fantastic meal! Sushi was all well prepared and super fresh. The rice was a bit less sticky- the rolls sometimes fell apart, than I am used to, but the texture was good. The meal is delivered slowly in parts, allowing you to really enjoy each piece. Not too filling, but just right. I could see why so many peole recommeded this place. Go early to beat the crowd- we got there around 5pm and got seated right away. By 615, there was a deepening line.

Trust me!

I had lunch with a friend at Sugarfish when in LA for business. We both had the "trust me" menu and were served many plates of sushi, sashimi, rolls, miso. It was all delicious and the service excellent. I would definitely return! Trust me!

Fresh food,but not that japanese

By YUHAO D |

Sashimi and all the fish are very fresh, rice is warm which is a plus. But i did not see any Japanese chefs or waiters in this restaurant and food is not very Japanese style(how come a Japanese restaurant only has sashimi and sushi). Food is average, price is okay. But i was forced to pay a service fees of 16% .....i dont like the way they asked for tipping. Also,i ordered a cup of green tea ,i thought i was steep tea turns out made by the green tea bag.....

I can see why SUGARFISH is popular...

After being on the LA collection for awhile, I finally got to visit Sugarfish with some friends... SUGARFISH ambiance & service: Dark AF if you're here for dinner. Decor is attractive upscale contemporary that could be used as a high end art gallery. There's also a sushi bar to accommodate single diners and smaller parties. Our server was very sweet and helpful with figuring out which fixed set of nigiri we were going with. The kitchen was good with getting the courses to the table timely. SUGARFISH "Trust Me": All the courses that came out were tasty. Very fresh fish coupled with warm rice made for some tasty hand rolls and sushi. My favorite from the "Trust Me" course were the Tuna Sashimi, Salmon Nigiri and Toro Hand Roll. Everything we had was consistently on point. Sugarfish does not take reservations and the seating is limited so get ready for a wait if you're visiting during prime time. There isn't a reservation system that texts you when your table is ready and there are minimal seats in the waiting area. Located in DTLA, you'll probably prefer not to wait outside later in the evening. Keeping that in mind, be strategic with your visit when necessary. The ambiance is great for intimate dinners and coupled with tasty nigiri and friendly service, I can see why SUGARFISH is popular. I'm sure I'll be visit again. Enjoy!

Wow amazing

Hands-down the best sushi I've ever had. My wife and I went here for dinner and ordered the chefs menu. There's nothing we ate that wasn't amazing all of the sushi and the sashimi and the makis were extremely fresh very well-made and very tasty. The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly to explain everything to us. I found the place very reasonably priced and the Decour is very inviting. Definitely a must in LA.

Overrated

Decided to try this restaurant after reading all the rave reviews. Read the blurb on the owner’s philosophy in making sushi and I expected a traditional authentic sushi meal. Boy I was disappointed. Traditional sushi is an intimate affair with the chef in close attendance, serving 1 delectable piece at a time. Granted most the fish served was fresh. But serving 6 to 8 pieces at a time from a remote ( from the diners) albeit open kitchen doesn’t cut it. It is like a very much more expensive version of conveyer belt sushi. There was something wrong with the rice. There were undercooked grains. There was too much rice in proportion to the fish. The rice was also too loosely packed such that the sushi does not stay together when I picked it up and tilted it to dip the fish in soy sauce. The proportion and maybe the quality of otoro in the hand roll was suspect. Could not taste the rich burst of fatty fish flavor at all. The crab roll was much better. Perhaps I was expecting too much. This may be what Americans enjoy since this is a Japanese restaurant in Los Angeles, not Tokyo or even Singapore.

Sugarfish has a well deserved reputation and much hype surrounding the now chain of locations across the city. The sushi's freshness is second to none. My only complaint would be that too many people know about them! However, they have several locations nowadays, and it's only a matter of finding the one that is best for you on that particular night. I live in Los Angeles and Sugarfish continues to be the go to sushi restaurant for my wife and I on date nights.

Great sushi

Order the tasting menu. They have it broken down from not that hungry, medium hungry and really hungry. If you have someone in your group that does not like raw fish beware that most of the sushi offerings are uncooked. The wine and beer selections are limited but once we were seated the food came out quickly. Overall great sushi.

California Sushi

We tried to get in for dinner last Thursday night but it was slammed - sounds like it's always that way. 1.5 hour wait, so we opted to move on. Came back for lunch on Friday. Even at 1145 there was a wait for a seat at the bar. As you'll see from other reviews this is a sushi-only spot, with a few other things like edamame. The sushi is very fresh - wonderful quality fish. The service is fine - nothing special, not bad. I love sushi - Wendy not so much. But this was very much more to her taste than mine. They used quite bit of yuzu on the fish. I have nothing aginst yuzu - love it. But i prefer to taste my hamachi - not hamachi with yuzu on it. So while Wendy really liked the restaurant for its modern and Californian take on sushi, I'm a bit more traditional and would have much preferred less saucing. The rice is stunning - an often-overlooked component of the meal. Proportions are exactly right. The rice is warm, not glutinous and very much the way it should be. We'd go back. But I wished they'd take reservations as we're not waiting an hour to eat anywhere.
