Damn good sandwich

By MDLND |

I had never had a Vietnamese sandwich before but since eating my first one i'm hooked and have been coming back. Great tasting sandwiches with really nicely cooked meats with fresh salads and really good bread. The service is very fast even when busy and the price is amazingly cheap considering the quality. If you are in the area you should try it.

Quality Slipping A Little

By chanyu1 |

This place used to have one of the best Vietnamese sandwich with an excellent price but my most recent experience has revealed that the sandwich has slipped a bit in terms of quality. Before, the roast pork sandwich had decent tasting meat but this time, the pork was dry and chunky, making the sandwich even more chewy than before. I've never care for the bread at this place as I feel that their sandwiches would be 100% better if their bread is not so chewy but at least the meat was nice and soft. But now, even the meat is chewy making eating this sandwich an exercise for the jaw. On the plus side, even though they raised the price to $4, it is still a good value, if you don't mind the jaw exercise...

Best deal in the city. Great Vietnamese sandwiches for under $3. Get there early or be prepared to wait in line.

Best sandwich ever - Colorful neighborhood adds to the charm

By Lisa1172 |

Hubby & I walked here from Union Square hotel - very gritty neighborhood but no problems at all. The line was out the door but the wait was only 10 minutes or less - so worth it! I let the ladies choose my sandwich, I think it was the pork combo & it was outstanding! Will definitely make this a must visit on my future trips to San Francisco!

A very pleasant surprise

By bleech2024 |

Don't let the appearance of this sandwich take away fool you, the food is excellent and great value, and the service is quick. I rocked up with some friends and we were quickly and politely served, in and out in under 5 minutes with a great little sandwich for only $3.50. You couldn't ask for better service and not to mention the woman that served us smiled, actually smiled. Not enough people working in customer service in this city smile. As someone who's worked in customer service for over 7 years, a simple smile can go a long way.

Excellent Food, Great Value

By hereishome |

This is the cheapest lunch ever. I come here to get their vegetarian sandwich and am always completely content--I usually only eat half for lunch and have the other half to bring home--and all under $4. As others have mentioned, the popularity of this whole-in-the-wall means you will be waiting on a long line if you don't get there early or wait until after the lunchtime rush. It goes fast though and it's worth the wait!

Best Banh Mi in the City

By Grant L |

There are plenty of options for Banh Mi (Vietnamese sandwiches) in SF, but all locals know that the only place to go for the best is Saigon Sandwiches. Delicious sauce, great meats, and affordable prices (in spite of a recent price increase). There are some lines during busy hours, but never more than 20 minutes or so.

Great tiny shop for take out, very reasonable prices like $3.50. Best place for Vietnamese sandwiches, hands down!

Always looking for a banh mi

By CallMrPlow |

Whenever I travel I make a point to find a banh mi sandwich shop. I forget how I heard about this one but made a special stop. The sandwich is fantastic. There are only two seats to sit and eat. It was for sure my cheapest meal and so far the best. I saw in at least one other review the neighborhood is a little rough. I’d call it a lot rough. I never walked so fast to get from the shop to the cable car stop up on California St. The street was lined with homeless and sketchy folk. Glad I made the visit at least once.

Very Good Fresh Binh Ma Sandwich

By SonomaNut |

Not much to look in the small shop except the three women filling sandwich orders. Tell the lady by the prep table what kind of meat or tofu you want, pay your $3.75, and carry your sandwich out the door. Very nice fresh greens, peppers and carrots plus the fine seasoned meat. Well worth the two block walk up Larkin from UN Plaza, Asian museum and library.

the best banh mi in the usa

By sallychicago |

oh how i love saigon sandwich. it has never failed me and i've been going there every time i visit san fran for the last decade or more. the pork banh mi is the best choice i think, but also try the doughy dumplings stuffed with egg and wind hung sausage or the sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves. i have tried many of the items displayed on the counter and never been disappointed. it's in the tenderloin where everything looks sleazy but i've never had any problems at all in that neighborhood, barely pan-handled though if you're not used to it, it might be a shock. saigon sandwich has no seating, it's just take away. everything is super cheap. it was voted best banh mi in the usa by the new york times but the women who run the place were totally indifferent when i mentioned that to them..."who's next?" they just shouted to the line of people queuing out of the door. just a fantastic sf experience...daytimes only monday to sunday

Generously filled tasty Vietnamese sandwiches in San Francisco.

By Roberts69 |

An excellent Vietnamese 'Banh Mi Thit' (Pork) Sandwich in San Francisco. This is a hole in the wall sandwich shop where you will have to queue at lunchtime but the sandwiches are generously filled and delicious and at just US$4 each (and $1 for a can of soda) it's good value too. Highly recommended.

Best bhan mi I've ever had!

By lupitaruiztolento |

The service here is fast and great! They take cash only. Lines are pretty long at lunchtime but the wait is so worth it! Delicious, cheap, and great for on the go!

Bahn Mi to-go - Before 5pm though!

By Cory I |

This is one of the oldest Bahn mi shops in SF that I know of. I was getting sandwiches here when they neighborhood was REALLY sketchy and prior to lower Larking being dubbed "Little Saigon." Stand in line, order by looking at the options on the board, watch them toast the roll, stuff with your protein and top with pickled carrot/daikon, jalapeno slices & a wad of cilantro. Wrapped in paper and closed with a rubber band. Take it to a park* or back to the office and enjoy one of the finer things in the Civic Center area. (* There are 2 -3 seats at the window but it's not the best set up to dine-in.)

Favorite Bahn Mi

By fpigge |

We have been going to the Saigon Sandwich Shop for several years. Top-notch Bahn Mi sandwiches on the proper french, crusty bread, picante veggies and delicious pork. Plus, very reasonable.

Great Sandwiches

By AF |

They are fresh, they taste great. The special steamed and roast pork is my favorite. I'd go more often because I work nearby, but it's super sketchy toutside (right across the street from the Phoenix Motel in the Tenderloin). Just watch your back. Lots of tweakers around. Grab it and run!

Honeymoon

By adamshoham |

Very good sandwich. Close to Eddy st, very bad area! Go and back by taxi it's better or stop with The citybus. Sandwich chicken was a great and big.

Excellent Vietnamese sandwiches

By Georg R |

My wife & I trucked to this tiny hole in the wall past the usual assortment of Tenderloin denizens and detritus, and it was well worth it. Sandwiches were extremely tasty, fresh, and cheap. We had the bbq pork - the most popular, from the orders we overheard as we sat at the only seats (window seats) and devoured our food. Primarily a food-to-go place, & they had other tasty-looking treats that I'd love to try some day.

I'm dreaming of Bahn Mi...

By SimonFamilyMKE |

I stopped in a couple weeks ago on a short trip to San Francisco and wish I were a local so I could go back. The bahn mi here was hands down the best sandwich I've had. It was perfect even after a 15 minute walk back to the hotel. The bread was warm yet crispy, the pork was delicious, & the veggies were perfectly crunchy. I'd never tried pate before and almost skipped the sandwich altogether because I was convinced I wouldn't like it, but it was well worth the risk. Now that I'm back home and our newest local Vietnamese place won't have bahn mi for a couple weeks, I find myself daydreaming about Saigon's sandwiches. Go now and make sure you get two!

Wow! Great, inexpensive sandwiches and service with a smile!!

By TulsaGal2011 |

My boyfriend and I were at the Asian Art Museum (if you can get there before the Terra Cotta Warriors exhibit leaves, that is awesome) and asked one of the museum employees where to go get sandwiches for lunch. He said Saigon Sandwich Shop, that he went there nearly every day for lunch. I already had it on my restaurant "saves" from Trip Advisor, so we walked the few blocks to get there. It is very small, so don't plan on eating inside. However, despite the standing-room-only crowd, service was quick and correct, with a smile. The sandwiches were large and tasty, and very inexpensive. We walked back to the grounds of the museum and simply sat on on a low wall by the sidewalk to eat, enjoying the food, the beautiful day and the great SF atmosphere.

Amazing value banh mi!

By SuzieLee71 |

This grimy hole-in-the-wall eatery in the edgy Tenderloin district does a roaring trade in banh mi. My husband and I tried the roast chicken banh mi and it was very good – crispy, light bun filled with lashings of salad and a generous amount of meat. The service is super fast and it was exceptional value too.

Soooo Gooood

By sherrietoliver |

Went to this sandwich shop with Vienamese/American co worker while in travel. He said that he read that this place should be on a bucket list. We were not disappointed. There was a line but the wait was not long. The menu is very short and ordering is easy...chicken, pork, tofu...stuffed in a crusty bread with seasoned veggies and celantro. I had the pork, my co worker had a combination. Soooo Gooood...didnt even hurt our per diem at barely $4 per sandwich.

Great Sarnies for next to nothing

By NeilTu |

Only 5 choices available but only $3.50 each - great food. Just across the road from The Phonix Hotel and next door to a Liquor store

Tasty and inexpensive lunch

By HelenaGuerra |

Tip: cash only; long wait Pros: great value for money, tasty Cons: the ladies aren't very nice I had a roasted pork bahn mi. It was very tasty. It's not the best that I ever had (i had really good bahn mi experiences in Alexandria and Chicago check my reviews and pics) but it was above average.

This is a dive but the lines are out the door

By Giggee |

Lousy location, fabulous sandwiches. Get the roast pork or the combination. They will set you back about $3 each. Crusty baguette, watch for the hot peppers but yum. We went back for another and seriously thought about taking one on the plane. For tourists, be advised that there is considerable street life nearby so I would not come here for a late night snack.....especially since they close around 5PM!

Yum yum, in my tum tum

By stephen8781 |

This is good if you want a sandwich. Just a good sandwich. Nothing else.

Great Value

By tmm357 |

Bahn Mi sandwiches here are amazing! Great price too! Super fast for to go orders. I will defintely be back.

Best Banh Mi sandwich you will find

By cnbowser |

Whenever we are in town it is a must stop. I’ve even carried it on the plane home. If you have never tried tofu you must try their fried tofu sandwich which comes with an truly addictive sauce pulse pickled carrots and daikon, jalapeños, and cilantro. We also get the pork banh mi. Can’t wait to go back again. And even though they raised the prices sandwiches are still only $4

The most delish sandwich EVER!

By Yoko T |

Ok, the neighborhood surrounding it is SCARY! But was worth every effort. Best Ban Mi ever and a MUST while you are in San Francisco. You can pair that with going to Tower Restaurant accross the street. Really great Pho there.

A Real Deal

By marinpartyof4 |

No frills, but the real bahn mi sandwich. Be prepared to wait in line if you're trying to buy sandwiches during the 12:00 lunch hour. Tried all their sandwiches and always a great treat for under $5. Although price has slowly been creeping up, still a bargain compared to other bahn mi sandwiches spread throughout the city. Skip the jalapeno peppers if you cannot take the heat...I do and ask for extra cilantro.

Awesome inexpensive sandwiches

By Philip Ong |

If you crave for a baguette sandwich when in sfo, head for this no-frill shop in Larkin street in the TEDERLOIN area. Both the roast pork/chicken option is good. For $3.75 it is much better than most other over-priced sandwiches around the city. Only deterrent for coming here is the location. That's why it's a 3 star for my rating.

Best Viet Sandwich in SF, in Bay Area. Just GO.

By jyee5127 |

Best Take out Vietnamese sandwiches on Larkin St in tenderloin area of downtown SF. Very seedy area with street people, but well worth the trip. I like the grilled pork and grilled chicken. Will try the meatball sandwich next time. When it’s your turn, shout out the Order, and mine were ready in less than 5 minutes. Don’t go here for warm and fuzzy service, it wont happen. Only 3 seating inside, its noisy and chaotic, best sandwich with fresh veggies, secret sauce, on a great perfect roll. I ask for “ no peppers” and they won’t put in jalapeños peppers. I ask “ cut in half” and they will. Cash Only. Be ready to order when it’s your turn. Best $4 sandwich anywhere, fresh , tasty and filling. Ignore the beggars and street people, walk there with a purpose, you will be fine. I always buy an extra sandwich, for late night snack or lunch tomorrow. Hint. I was riding in Uber car, my driver dropped me off, five people in line, it moves fast, and driver circled back when I was ready. Parking nearly impossible there. I bought him a $4 sandwich as his tip- he was thrilled. Best money ever spent. I have eaten Viet sandwiches in San Jose, Westminster in OC, all over USA, all over Asia and in HCMC Saigon. This one is top of my list. Enjoy !!

Best value Banh Mi ever!

By John C |

Delicious flavour, generous portion, fresh ingredients, $3.50 price. What else need be said? You'll need cash and a little patience at the lunch rush hour, but it's definitely worth it. Just a couple of blocks from the CIvic Centre area, we ate our sandwiches sitting in the sun on the low wall of one of the nearby buildings. Delightful.

Perfect cheap lunch

By Elawinters |

Five items on the menu. Each item costs $3.50. Great bread, meat and fresh vegetables. I loved it. It was delicious.

Best value Banh Mi!

By James M |

This is like traditional vietnamese banh mi... Simple. Cheap. AMAZING! This is the best banh mi we've had outside Vietnam. If you go with a friend/partner; do not think about sharing, get one each. They're not small but you wont want to share.

Banh mi - average

By Pankaj Gurung |

Heard a lot about the vietnamese sandwich sold here. Tried a couple of sandwiches with friends, nothing spectacular. Very dodgy neighbourhood as well.

Simple but very good

By Jason Y |

Bare bones sandwich (pork with pate) but absolutely hits the spot in its simplicity. Not the best area and don't expect a sit down space, but keep it on your short list of SF sandwich cravings.

Amazing Sandwichies

By afiction |

This is where I had the best tofu sandwich. I visited in January and I still think about it every now and then.

Diamond in the rough

By James N |

Made a point to go here because of several friends who suggested it. I was not disappointed! Three Vietnamese ladies ran that shop with impressive efficiency as people just shouted out orders. It was mesmerizing. Coming from Florida, it made my trip to San Francisco worth it. It was so good i bought 7 sandwiches just for myself

best sandwich ever

By bigcitylondon |

Had heard lots of good things about this place so was excited to go when we visited San Fran. The girlfriend was slightly hesitant before we went, but one bite quickly turned her round. The bread was crisp on the outside but soft and light on the inside. The fillings were fantastic and a perfect combo of meat and fresh vegetables. Yum

Sauce is addictive

By cnbowser |

The fried tofu banh mi is the best. Whatever secret sauce they put on is addictive. I'm from out of town and I'm not kidding when I say I will order half a dozen with veggies separate and haul on plane ride back. Check and fresh and a must stop every time in town. Only downside is in shady location. Cash only and tiny but so fast.

Great snack

By Marc |

Totally enjoyed it. Price is good - I think around $3.50. They have also some Vietnamese sandwiches but I didnt try them as they have Asian names but no description behind it

Quick to-go for Delish Sandwiches

By wishfrog |

Cash only! But if you are in the 'hood and want a very good banh mi, give it a try. They also have a selection of interesting bagged snacks, mochi, and a cooler of standard and old-timey sodas like Cactus Cooler and Canada Dry ginger ale. While we were deciding on mochi vs this tapioca-based snack, a guy came with a box of freshly-steamed...well, we couldn't read the label but it was basically a steamed pork loaf in banana leaf. A great little place! Nice folks.

Great and inexpensive lunch.

By Marco |

Everything has been said about this place, but here it is anyway ! They serve great Bahh Mi sandwiches for a really affordable price. I had the pork sandwich and it was so tasty with just the right amount of cilantro, you will want another as soon as you're finished. I think you might encounter a line whenever you choose to go because this shop is very small and their reputation is growing fast. But if you avoid the rush hour, they are quick and you won't have to wait too long and believe me it is worth it. I recommend this place to everyone, but expect to get your food and go eat somewhere else because there is almost no seating (2 places) there. Best sandwich I had in San Francisco.

Fast and easy with great taste.

By Anthony |

Great place stop by for a sandwich on the go. Always fresh and a lot of side orders to choose from. mmm good.

Opens early

By Coleman M |

This was across the street from our room. It is a tiny spot with great sandwiches. Inexpensive, tasty, with a simple menu. This was a great value. Since they open at 7 AM, was our choice for breakfast.

Delicious

By Sascha T |

Great sandwiches, just a bit to spicy for me. Fresh made and lots of meat inside. Worth the waiting.

The best Bahn mi anywhere

By sifuerst |

Get the special combination bahn mi. My, my, my. The bread is freshly baked on the spot by two of the most hard-working women I have ever seen. And the price is right.

Best Bahn Mi sandwiches, to-go

By VousAllez |

Great little sandwich shop in the Tenderloin serving Vietnamese sandwiches to-go. Wait patiently in line to order succulent pork on a warm baguette roll with fire-y fresh cut jalapeno slices and crisp cilantro. Bring cash, I think that's all they take. But at $3.50 a sandwich, you can afford it!

Absolutely amazing Banh Mi sandwiches at amazing prices

By Billy |

Super tasty. Quick to be served. Filled with everything, not tight on anything. Always come back here.

Let's be serious

By Robert D |

I mean sure it's great to try new things. The sandwiches definitely were not bad, however they are not the best. And it is also located in the worst neighborhood of San Francisco. In fact, a man was loading a needle for heroin in broad daylight in the middle of the sidewalk across the street. It's definitely decent, but not worth raving over.

BBQ pork

By TravelTaster8 |

This was my first time ever trying Bahn Mi so I have nothing to compare it to, but I have to say, this was truly delicious. The bread is baked fresh on site, and the toppings are just perfect. I had the pork, and it was so good that I was actually savoring the taste in my mouth for several minutes after I finished. Definitely recommended. Service is efficient and friendly. I would be a frequent visitor if I lived here!

Lived up to the hype

By billyocean |

I was a little skeptical of the reviews after looking at some of the pictures. I mean, how good could a meat and carrot sandwich taste? I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered one roast pork and one pork meat ball Banh Mi. Both were equally delicious. The meats had a sweet glaze on them. Not overly saucy. Just enough glaze to keep the meats moist. The carrots and onions(I think) were also sweet. They must have been pickled. The mayo also was sweet, like miracle whip. The sweetness of the sandwich was balanced by the cilantro and jalapeno(although I took out the jalapeno after a couple of bites because it was too hot). The size of the sandwich was just right. Big enough to satisfy my appetite without leaving me feeling stuffed and sluggish. Saigon Sandwich shop was definitely one of the highlights of my trip to San Francisco. Its definitely worth the trip if you're from an area where Vietnamese sandwich shops aren't present.

Love me a Vietnamese sandwhich

By quericoyima |

Walked about 16 blocks from my hotel to try this sandwhich shop...although the area is really sketchy the walk was worth it...it's a tiny shop with just a counter and drink refrigerators. The sandwhiches were delicious..I tried the roast chicken!!!

Overrated I think

By Heidi J |

The sandwiches are average (however, very cheap). We went there because of the reviews and it was a fine travelling experience, but we are propably not buying anymore sandwiches here during our stay.

Awesome sandwich

By nuggetshow |

Quick, cheap and very good. The locals in line steered us towards the roast pork and it was outstanding. 2 sandwiches 7.50 total. That would of been a deal for one.

Best Banh Mi sandwiches in SF!!!!

By Bjrem |

This is a tiny take out spot that draws lines down the block. The chicken banh mi sandwich is wonderful! Two of us had sandwiches and two drinks for under $12 including tax- amazing! Be sure to bring cash as they don't take credit.

amazing value in an expensive city

By Neal B |

Crispy French roll and tasty pork along with fresh herbs, carrots, peppers and secret sauce. This can't be beat. In a city where everything is darn expensive paying $3.75 for a delicious filling sandwich is a rare find. The line can be out the door but it moves quickly. No real seating or table service-plan to -grab and go! Not really in a neighborhood where most visitors will want to hang out, lot's of SF's colorful crazies and homeless folks but it's a small price to pay for this great sandwich.

Best Vietnamese Sandwiches ... EVER!

By BigUglyFish |

We often have Vietnamese sandwiches for lunch in Seattle, which I thought were pretty tasty. But the Saigon Sandwich Shop blows them away. Worth the trip to San Francisco!

Went twice in one day

By citywalker15 |

We were in town visiting and came here to buy 2 bahn mi for breakfast - roast pork and chicken. The meats are marinated to perfection, and the veggies on top and the great bread really make the sandwich. Since we're from out of town, we came back later in the afternoon to grab two more sandwiches for the plane right home. Only negative is having to walk through the tenderloin to get to the shop, which is definitely rowdier at 4 pm than at 8 am.

Delicious sandwiches

By Helmut |

The smaller and shadier the place, the better the sandwiches. This is the rule for the Vietnamese Banh Mi shops and this one fits the MO perfectly... Tiny, with a line out the door and two cranky ladies making sandwiches. The tofu banh mi was delicious and being able to nab the two chairs in the tiny shop was a treat. Perfect place to grab a sandwich to go if you work downtown.

Wonderful sandwiches!

By happy4travel |

The best banh mi ever! The roast chicken was delicious, really moist and tender, the cilantro and shredded carrots perfect, especially enjoyed sliced jalapeños! The crunchy sweet sandwiches, amazing. It’s a joy to try new foods! Very good value for what you get.

Saigon Sandwich Satisfies

By drdobg |

Based on the reviews and the proximity of my hotel, I went to the Saigon sandwich shop for a late lunch. Tried the roast pork sandwich, and at $3.75 an unprecedented value for San Francisco. A toothsome mini baguette and an abundance of fresh veggies dressed with a sweet and spicy sauce made this a memorable and filling lunch. Would definitely recommend and would return anytime!

BBQ Pork is Unforgettable.

By Dedy S |

Cheap, but does NOT taste cheap at all. The BBQ Pork is super tasty. The sweetness and savory of the BBQ Pork and its sauce are just correct. The pork is tender, its flavor is neither too bland nor too sharp. The pork pairs well with the carrot salad. Quite filling, they give good amount of pork :) I also tried the Xiu Mai banh mi, it was good but nothing amazing like the BBQ Pork.

Perfect

By Mark D |

I dropped in for the Pork Bahn Mi for breakfast. Absolutely delicious with perfect combination of fresh bread, pork, herbs, salad and dressing. Definitely worth making the effort to try this at any time of day.

Great Banh Mi, order to go

By FlyBalletGuy |

Bring cash (it's not a lot) and expect a line. If you're really hungry, the special steamed and roast pork sandwich is quite filling. There's almost nowhere to sit, so be prepared to eat elsewhere (and there aren't many options for that in the neighborhood - it's sketchy)

talk about bang for your buck

By savetheworld123 |

A hole in the wall I read about, and it lived up to it's expectations and more. Wonderful sandwiches, with veggies, flavorings, crisp rolls and of course the protein. These women work very hard and make excellent sandwiches, prices are dirt cheap and quality is super high. Go there, you won't be disappointed. There are lines, but if you go after the mad lunch rush...you are free and clear. Check out the local color and authenticity. A must!

Habit Forming

By nosniv |

Best Vietnamese sandwich shop in the bay area. There is always a line, but worth the wait. They take orders in bunches so be ready to shout out your order when they ask for it. Seating is pretty much non-existent so plan on eating somewhere else. The civic center plaza is a good option, or if you want something more scenic hop on the 19 bus at the stop in front of the shop for a short ride to the Aquatic park located to the west of Fisherman's Wharf.

Bahn mi's are one of my favorite things to eat in the world.

Price gone up

By babyoscar530 |

Came by based on the suggestion of two locals. The price has gone up now 4dollsrs each. By the way, you can ask for combination as I found out later, just cost a little more.

Wow! Overrated...

By Stinkyrules |

Not really sure is providing such high ratings. Don't get me wrong, it was an ok sandwich but not worthy of being 49/3,117 restaurants in SF. The sandwiches range from around $3 - $4.50. I went for the most expensive, the combination. It has reasonable flavor, served by a very friendly and prepared in a couple of minutes BUT it was not even remotely close to the best sandwich that I have ever had. Actually, it was just average and not worth it of you have to walk out of your way. It's also located in a colorful part of the city so you may want to avoid after sunset.

Great food at bargain pries

By Howard S |

Great Banh Mi Vietnamese sandwiches quickly served and very tasty. Little or no seating inside so consider this a takeout only place.

Roast Pork Banh Mi is My Favorite

By LindaRoo |

Whenever we visit San Francisco and have a hankering for banh mi sandwiches, we head for Saigon Sandwich Shop. I always order the roast pork. It's full of flavor....roast pork is tasty and there's crunchy carrots and daikon?, in a wonderful french roll. Can't beat it for $3.50. Walk down to the Civic Center Park, enjoy your banh mi, and people watch.

Cheap and delicious

Quick sandwich below $5

By okiks |

We were there before noon. There were about 10 people in line. The lady worker asked about 4 customers at a time what their order was. When it was my turn, I gave my order for 4 different sandwiches. The order was done, I paid and I got my 4 sandwiches. When my friends and I opened the sandwiches, they were all pulled pork. Oh well. We were already on the freeway when we learned what they gave us. Make sure you ask the lady worker what is in the plastic bag before you leave the place. As for the pulled pork sandwiches, they were all good.

Yummy, cheap and hits the spot

By Dean |

I was looking for a place which served a good asian filled roll. I read online that the Saigon Sandwich Shop was a great place to eat and it was cheap. Finding it wasn't hard and inside was very small. It cash only and I can see why. The cost for each roll was USD3.75 which includes taxes. This made a nice change where things are advertised as $5 but are actually $5.43 after taxes. It gets slightly annoying coming from a country where the entire cost is included in the advertised price. The roll was made by a lovely Asian lady who put it all together at warp speed. I ordered the pork and it was so good. The bread was warm and crunchy, the pork moist and heated, the vegetablea and herbs were fresh and tasty and finally the sauce was complimenting with a hint of spice. It was satisfying and tempting to have another!! I would go back again in a heart beat for more.

Best sandwich in San Francisco! & you can't beat the price.

Much better than any fast food, but did not live up to the hype

By Stephen S |

Here are some notes that I did not pick up on in other reviews (they were there, but I didn't get them). 1. If you don't know the Tenderloin District, it's a little seedy to say the best. 2. There is NO seating in the restaurant, or any where around it (except on the curb). 3. This place is decently clean, but looks like what it is: A sandwich shop in a seedy area of town. 4. I didn't know about the pate` they put in the sandwich. To me it smells like what dog food would taste like. It's not bad, it's just an acquired taste. 5. Everyone raved about the chicken sandwich, but I think I would have like to have tried the pork sandwich. I might try it if I ever get back to SF. 6. The hardness of the roll makes the ingredients get squeezed out when you bite into it. Be aware - this is a messy sandwich (not a bad thing at all). Overall, I am glad I tried it, and might even go back if I have an extended stay in SF. I will definitely drive there the next time. We took a cab there after walking around other parts of the city. I didn't feel all that comfortable walking back to a bus route we knew would get us to our hotel. It's my ignorance for not realizing this about the Tenderloin District. The sandwich is definitely fresh and tasty. You just need to be aware of the pate` flavor which is accompanied by all the other flavors (loved the cilantro and didn't try the hot peppers).

I'm a local SF resident and love this place. You'll need tog et over that it's in the tenderloin... deal with it & it's worth it. Why's it so good? a. the pork sandwich is amazing b. it's $4!!!

This place is no frills and cheap. The sandwich options are limited but they great. I tried the combination, chicken and pork. Thanks to the locals for pointing out that the lady making the sandwiches was trying to take our order. They are super quick and will have your order ready in under 5 minutes.

Roast Pork or Roast Chicken you choose. Classic Banh Mi style sandwich stuffed with shredded carrots, cilantro, Daikon radish, wilted onions and optional sliced jalapeno peppers in a crunchy French sweet roll. Very consistent quality makes for return trips a must.

Great food

Found this place on TripAdvisor and went their because of its good reviews. The Vietnamese rolls are delicious. You get the fresh rolls for $3.50, which is a bargain compared to the prices for other foods in San Fran

My favorite Bahn Mi shop

By Chartreuse |

This place has been here forever and it's my favorite Bahn Mi shop. The prices have gone up over the years but that's to be expected. The ladies speak Vietnamese and Cantonese. They do try to sell you on some of their other stuff on the counter but stick with the sandwiches. We usually ask to leave out the jalapeno peppers and we tend to order the BBQ chicken, meatball and either pork combination or pate sandwiches. It's nice to patronize small businesses and these ladies open shop early and close late, pretty long hours on their feet. I hope they'll be around for a long time, they're the only reason why I'd be willing to come into this neighborhood full of bums and drug addicts to buy or eat anything.

Good banh mi with good value

By Lily |

The price of one banh mi is quite similar to a sub at Subway and as a Vietnamese, I must say I like it better. I have tried all the fillings and they all are pretty good with generous amount of vegetables and meat. The sauce is a little bit too sweet for me but I think it suits the American taste. It's located in a dirty, dangerous neighborhood but it's worth trying.

Can't be beat!

Terrific sandwiches in the Tenderloin

By carport |

Saigon Sandwich Shop makes delectable, crunchy, spicy (you control the level) roast meat sandwiches on fresh French rolls for exceptionally affordable prices. They also offer a nice assortment of other Vietnamese food and treats. They've been around for many, many years -- a testament to their quality and value. My family picked up sandwiches from Saigon Sandwich Shop often when we lived in San Francisco. When we moved from San Francisco to the peninsula, we stopped at Saigon Sandwich Shop every time we visited the city -- despite the difficulties of parking in the area. On occasion, we craved the sandwiches enough to make a special trip. It's well worth it! My favorite is their roast pork sandwich prepared their usual way.

You may have had As Good, but not Better!

By PrimalEater |

REALLY good Viet Namese sammy shop that cranks em out as fast as you can call out what you want. They have like a half dozen things you can get, ok? Six items, chief, so don't take all day to say ROASTED PORK or MEATBALLS or PATE! And get a move on and get your Cash Ready, becaus3 they don't be taking no EBT or.credit cards

Unbelievable taste!

By Ca52 |

I'd read reviews about this sandwich shop and so called in for one. The taste was out of this world - goodness knows what they put in the sandwich but the flavours were incredible! Such a tiny little shop - easy to miss, Went back the next day on our way to Monterey and ate it on the beach at Santa Cruz. If ever I get back to San Francisco, I'm definitely visiting again. Wonderful.

WOW the best sandwich in town!

By Jeannier801 |

Just a little walk-in sandwich shop that has no flare but plenty of tasty food. The ladies are very friendly and you won't be disappointed.

The best bahn mi, the best price!!

By rduinc |

This was by far the best bahn mi we have ever had. For a little more than $4, you get a good sized sandwich piled high with meat and veggies. I had the pork sandwich and it was deliscous. There is a small counter for eating there which faced the park so enjoyed the people watching while feasting on these great sandwiches!

best sandwiches in SF!! juicy roast meats, pate, peppers, and plenty of pickled carrots.....yummm what's not to love! I think if you purchase 10 sandwiches, you get one free. or was it 5? hmmm...

The BBQ cheicken or PATE are to die for!!! Talk about bang for the buck!

By SANFRANCISCOBRONX |

This is a little Sandwish shop off of Eddy st in the Tenderloin...but it gets crowded EVERYDAY. They toast the bread and fill them up to full capacity with their concoction of special sauces and sweet carrots. If you do not like spicy foods...ask for the "no chilli" option. I loved their BBQ chicken...SOOO GOOD! Their PATE was amazing too. $3 for a big-ol sandwish sounds good to me. If you are dning on a short penny...this is it. I quite honestly have these at least once a month. They are sooooo good and there is a reason it has been named SF's bets sandwish shop like 20 years in a row or something like taht. These three Vietnamese ladies get down!

banh mi

By marg m |

tastes great...spelled correctly...and, so what, if it's in the Tenderloin.

Very disappointed

By BearTS |

I give this banh mi a 2 out of 5 for missing some key components. First, it was way too big. I know most people would say this is a good thing, but the problem is that you only taste a couple of things in each bite. Plus, it makes it hard to eat. Second, the bread was too hard and “bready”. The bread should be light and crispy. Third, the toppings tasted just ok. My banh mi search continues...

Balance, Balance, Balance

By Takoyaki47 |

The crispy baguette, the seasoned pork pate, the crunchy julienned carrots and cukes, the hit of cilantro and chile, the sweet and tangy dressing... the balance of these sandwiches is unrivaled thus far in my experience. I keep trying new places, like the ones around the corner on Polk and in the TL, or Bunn Mi out in the Richmond. Most are decent. Some have some attractive variations of fancy meat (crispy duck, etc). But none consistently nail it like this place. And the price simply can't be beat!

Oh Bahn Mi!

By Kat Von J |

I traveled from Texas to try these bahn mi. Actually, I didn't, but I had this place in mind when I planned my California trip, lol! Totally worth a walk through the shady Tenderloin District. We got the pork and the meatball, the meatball was the better of the two, but not disappointed at all. Just praying for a bahn mi shop to open here lol!

Simple sandwich, simply FANTASTIC

By Greta C |

Bahn Mi, a must SF experience and this is fresh, fast and sooooo delicious! I can't believe it was only $3.75 for the roast pork... The veggies were crisp, the bread was crusty and perfect. Very small shop, not meant for sit down service. The service was very efficient and fast. They aren't warm and fuzzy, but quick to move the line. And who cares when the food is this good??? Make this a stop for SURE

Delicious banh mi on the go

By Charlie A |

Fantastic value, cash only. Great grab to go and eat on the run. Recommend roast pork or combination--pork, chicken, and pâté.

The must-have sandwich in San Francisco!

By AndiM74 |

I have been to Saigon Sandwich twice and will definitely return! In March 2016, my husband drove by, dropped me off, and I ordered 3 pork bahn mi sandwiches for $3.75 each. He drove around the block and I was out on the street with sandwiches ready to go! This was a Monday right around noon and there were about three people ahead of me in line. The women are fast, efficient, and know what they are doing. Take the sandwiches to go. We ate ours at Fort Point right beneath the Golden Gate. Perfection! Seriously delicious and so affordable.

Best Bahn-mi

By MissMichele V |

We loved the bahn-mi here. Super fresh. Worth heading to this tiny little shop. The line may look long, but it moves fast. Be ready with your order as soon as you get to the front of the line. They are not the most patient.

Real vietnamese sandwiches

By Frank T |

Been there the second time and again those vietnamese sandwiches for 4$ are just amazing. Fresh bread (ours was still warm), fresh ingredients and really big for its size. Definitely a great place to grab a sandwich. Seating is limited though, therefore more of a take out place.

Delicious sandwiches at bargain prices

By Stu Y |

This shop has become my go to place for picking up something to eat on our flight back home. Their roast pork, chicken, meatball, and combination bahn mi sandwiches have generous amounts of tasty meat and vegetables, carrots, daikon, pate-like spread, cilantro, and jalapeno. I often contemplate buying more to take home and eat the next day. Yes, it is not located in a nice part of the city but the service is quick and the delicious sandwiches are so worth the trip!

Homemade gourmet on a budget

By Trigurl |

Great Vietnamese eats on a budget. Ingredients are fresh and service is fast. Cash only :)

Big tasty portions

By FayMac |

If you're in the Tenderloin, this hole-in-the-wall is a good place for a tasty bahn mi sandwich of pork, beef, chicken and a couple other choices. You'll need to take out though, as there is seating for exactly 2 people in the cramped space.

Dirt Cheap for Amazing Food!

By Maddie B |

If you didn't know it was there you wouldnt have stopped! There is 3 women who speak little to no english! We got 2 waters and 2 roast chicken sandwiches for $5. The sandwich was amazing but the only part I didn't know was that there were jalapeños on the sandwiches. I don't like spicy food so I had to take them off by hand! Other than that it was a amazing sandwich shop for dirt cheap!

Not sure what I'm missing about this place...

By SLV |

The banh mi's were average and nothing special in my opinion. I was referred to this place by several friends who have lived in the city and was told they made the most amazing banh mi's so we made a special stop on our trip from Norcal to Socal to try these amazing things. We bought 3 pork, 1 chicken and 1 meatball. The pork was probably the best of the 3 but none of them were AMAZING like my friends claimed. Yes, they were cheap and filling but that's where it ends for me. The people I was with agreed. The bread was on the harder side vs. being crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Maybe we went too late?? Be aware the area where this shop is located is pretty scary - I wouldn't recommend going alone. Still on the hunt for a banh mi as good as the ones on the Nom Nom truck in Los Angeles....which is now closed :(

Very good

By Neno S |

Very good and tasty sandwiches. Although menu board has only 4-5 items, rather limited, also limited seating space (2-3 chairs and small counter), and it is located in not-so-appealing neighborhood, so you can not eat outside. Food is very fresh and cheap

Affordable Vietnamese Sandwiches!

By Oliva D |

Excellent Vietnamese sandwiches starting at $5.50-cash only! Tofu sandwich available for vegetarians! Fast service! Not located in the best neighborhood. But it is buy and go!

Cheap and delicious

By Joe D |

One of the only places in San Francisco you get get a sandwich for $4. Both the sandwiches I had were delicious, so much so I went back again the next day.

"Can't Judge A Book By It's Cover"

By mcmacd1229 |

Saigon Sandwiches.... I often dream of their Pork Banh Minh Sandwiches. Is it a total dump? Yep. As far as I know? Maybe only interior paint twice in 20 years. Which is the ONLY reason I shall give 4 Stars. No lie. I have seen 20 customers lined up down Larkin Street waiting. Yet, the succulent sandwiches which await (currently only $3.50/ each) will have you finding yourself in arguments with your taxi driver about stopping en route to your Hotel. Folks will always argue and pit on of the best to another. Not so with Saigon Sandwiches. It's really hard to put into words? Just get in there, and listen for the snap of the rubber band on that white piece of paper. ENJOY!

Best Vietnamese sandwich

By johnnylopez2017 |

Best banh mi bar none, no kidding. Pretty consistent and cannot beat the prices $4 per sandwich. Whole in the wall

Bit of a wait, nowhere to sit, and yet you should try it. One of the reasons the Tenderloin is awesome.

Great bahn-mi, perfect daytime eats

By David S |

At the risk of making the lines even longer at lunch time (we go in the morning on weekends on our way out of town), I am so impressed with the sandwiches that come out of this little tucked away kitchen and stand in Little Saigon near Civic Center BART and City Hall SF. All under $4, there's seating for a whole two people in the window! But I find it fast, delicious, and reasonable. They also offer various Vietnamese snacks similar to dim sum; exotic (to me) deserts, rice snacks wrapped in banana leaves, gooey deserts, grass jelly drinks. And the bread is freshly baked, either by their shop or by one of the local bakers that bake with rice flower to make that good, crunchy french-style bun. As a practical person, this more than solves the "problem" of eating while traveling, out and around town, or even if I were working in Civic Center. Do yourself a favor and avoid the long lines from 11am to 1pm, a lot of workers go there.

There's a reason why the line's so long.....

By Berling's Eldest |

...but don't worry, it goes fast. Delicious Banh mi sandwiches, cheap. Best lunch deal in SF, IMHO. If you're at the Civic Center, walk two blocks east on the street in front of the Asian Art museum. The shop will be on your right. Enjoy!

Best Meatball Sandwich Period!

By Matthew Gontram |

Another visit with family in the Bay Area. Always look forward to the Bahn MI sandwiches in Oakland Chinatown. Mother-in-law took us to this old staple instead. By far the best all around. Tons of meat and vegies, good spice and delicious bread. Certainly the best I've ever had!

Good value, scary journey

By LBRBNewcastle |

Sandwiches are great and really good value. Walk to the shop from Union Square gets a little bit scary for a few streets as you pass one of the city's soup kitchens, it's worth the slightly scary walk though!

If you like banh mi - this is the best - if you don't know what banh mi is, try this place!

By Terry A |

Nothing fancy but you're bahn mi will be authentic and just right. I always order the roast pork with pate and call my office as someone always wants me to bring some back when I stop here on the way to the office. Little hole in the wall but for Vietnamese sandwich aka banh mi, this place is special and especially good!

Cheap price, average sandwich

By Justin A |

I went to Saigon Sandwiches on a Friday around lunchtime as I saw it had the highest rating out of all the Vietnamese bánh mì sandwiches in the area. When I walked by, I saw it had quite a crowd of people lined up to order, as well as a scatter of people waiting for their food. I was a bit shocked to see the interior with 4 Vietnamese women quickly working in a bánh mì sandwich assembly line. It didn't look like very sanitary conditions, but I still ordered a roast chicken sandwich for $3.75. I was worried it would take a long time to get my order, but it was pretty fast (5-10 minutes). I could see this getting out of hand with a lot more people because when I placed my order, the lady just wrote down my food without my name or without me even paying. Then, she just called out "one roast chicken." I had to look around to make sure it was my actual order and then paid. There is a small area at the front beside the cooler with two chairs you could sit and eat at, but with all of the people crowding inside, I wouldn't recommend this. There is no seating outside, as well, so it's more of a "take-away" sandwich shop sort of thing. When opening the wrapping to the sandwich, I saw how messy it was put together. I wouldn't have minded waiting a bit longer if they made it less messy. The bread was a bit too hard for me, and I can see it hurting the top of people's mouths when biting down. Overall, the sandwich was ok, but you can't really complain about that price. I think that's the only reason why this place has such a high rating. I eat a lot of bánh mì sandwiches personally, and this place definitely was not matching what the reviews had me believe it should be. Maybe I came on an off day? I'm highly disappointed to read on Yelp that this is the best bánh mì sandwich in San Francisco; that's unacceptable. What I ordered: -Roast Chicken Bánh Mì Sandwich ($3.75) Pros: -Very inexpensive Cons: -Sketchy neighborhood with many homeless people -Looks unsanitary in the interior -Messy sandwich -Bread is too hard -No comfortable seating area (take-away only) -Confusing ordering setup

TL hole in the wall

By Meagan L |

i received my sandwich in under a minute, which suggests the ingredients are probably pre-prepared. i enjoyed the sauce they use, which had a nice kick to it. i'm not one to turn down spice, but i'll admit i had to take a few jalapenos out of my sandwich.

Yummy fresh sandwiches to go

By tiavioleta |

We found this place by reasons reviews and happened to have it just around the corner from our hotel. Perfect as we were going for a drive and needed a bite. The line outside of the place told us how popular this place is, but that didn't mean we had to wait for long anyway. They only offer one veggie option which is a bit disappointing when the meat list is so long, but as it was soooo delicious anyway Id definitely go back here. The bread is as fresh as the veggies and the tofo is soaked in yummy sweet chili sauces. We enjoyed the sandwiches all the way to Muir woods.

Killer Sandwiches!

By Carlos Q |

Anyone who's watched Seinfeld is probably familiar with the episode about the Soup Nazi....well the place is the Vietnamese equivalent of that restaurant. It's usually crowded not just because it's a small establishment, but because the sandwiches are so damn good! I don't believe I've ever had any Vietnamese food before, so I was skeptical, but these sandwiches are amazingly delicious and at $3.75 each, they're a steal! But be ready to order as the short lady that works behind the counter does not waist time and will want your order quick! Otherwise it's probably...No Sandwich for you!! LOL!
