Not Sure What the Fuss is All About

By snelson0929 |

We didn't have the wings, mainly because they're deep fried, so maybe that explains our "meh" reaction. The food was decent, but we didn't think it was anything to rave about. Doubt we will return.

Long wait but is it worth it?

By Ambassador616224 |

After an afternoon in San Francisco we 4 (daughter and son-in-law with us) arrived on Friday at the 5 p.m. dinner open time, hoping to make the first seating at this busy restaurant. Alas we should have been at least 15 minutes earlier. Those waiting ahead of us on the sidewalk filled the room and we had to sign onto the wait list. Even though we were seated among the first off this list, we had a one hour wait. We witnessed many parties after us signing up for what could be waits twice as long or more. With this demonstrable popularity, we expected the food to be stratispherically "Wow". Frankly this was just not the case with the items we ordered and did receive reasonably promptly. The dry green beans, rice and chicken wings were good but not outstanding. The very Americanized chow mein was extremely bland and not worth eating. Perhaps there are dishes at San Tung that are deserving of an hour's wait but we think we'll wait a good long time to investigate.

Chicken Wings

By alansoff@comcast.net |

This neighborhood Chinese restaurant makes the best chicken wings that I have ever had. The second most popular dish is dry fried string beans. We always get take out because of the long and constant waiting list. Although it would be worth the wait.

BEST WINGS EVER

By lindsay5402 |

We visited from South Carolina and ate here twice in 2 days!! The dry wings were out of this world and we are already craving them again! The dumplings were heavenly and the service was fantastic-they treated us just like a local, not the very out of place southern hillbillies that we felt like licking that wing sauce off our fingers!!!

Ehhh!

By Taylordds |

I'm from Southern California, the Chinese food down there is soooo much better. We had Dim sum in China town and lunch here base on a recommendation and reviews. The chicken wings were tasty, but not sure I would go crazy over them. Been here, tried it, but probably won't come back. Especially since service isn't that great either.

Must visit everytime I'm in the city

By sweefkntee |

Everytime I am in SF, I cannot help but stop by. The wait is ludicrous sometimes but it is worth it to me. They normally have a clipboard up front where you can write your name, they go fast but normally the list is very, very long. The restaurant is just a boring looking Chinese restaurant. Not particularly fancy or vidually appealing, but there is one reason why I come here almost everytime -- dry fried chicken wings. OOOOMMMGGGosh. So amazing. It's a must try if you are in the area. Pro Tip: They have a boba place next door that is not too busy and you can actually order the dry fried chicken wings through them. I think they might be owned by the same owener, or they might have some sort of special partnership.

Best chicken wings!

By jnlvtrvl |

SanTung serves up the best chicken wings, it's fried then covered with sweet/salty sauce, so the wings were juicy inside but crunchy outside. The shrimp and leek dumplings are delicious. Garlic string beans are really well seasoned, and not at all mushy. I like their Dan Dan noodles with peanut sauce. They don't take reservations and there's always a wait during lunch and dinner. So try going there between 2-5pm. They recently open a dessert café next door, you can order from SanTung menu as they share the same kitchen. No wait and much cleaner.

OMG Fried Chicken Wings

By RedPanFan |

Like other reviewers, I was blown away by the amazing Original Dry Fried Chicken wings. The deep-fried wings were crispy despite being smothered in a sweet and sour sauce. In the future, I’d ask them to put the sauce on the side so everyone can decide how much sauce they want on their chicken. You get 12 pieces in an order, which is probably enough for 3 people, assuming you order additional dishes. We also had - Dry Black Bean Sauce Noodles – good but I’ve had better at another Chinese-Korean restaurant - Dried Sauteed String Beans – good. Meets the general standard for this dish. - Sauteed Bean Threads – good. Has pork and strips of vegetables. I’ll definitely be back for the chicken wings.

Not sure what the hype is all about

By Steven B |

While the food at San Tung is good it is not dramatically better than that I have eaten in other major cities in the US. The food was hot, tasty and, for the most part, served in a timely manner or exactly what I set as a baseline in every restaurant I go to. Is it worth a special trip to eat there? I’d say no but that is something only you can decide.

Amazing Chinese food!

By Michael B |

We were in San Francisco on vacation and staying in the Inner Sunset neighborhood, so we wanted to find some great local food. This place was a real highlight of our trip. The doors open at 5:00 p.m., and people were lining up before they even opened. Once inside, we were quickly seated and treated to complimentary kimchi, which was excellent. We wanted to try a number of different things in our party of five, so we ordered the dry chicken wings, the dumplings, Mongolian beef, chicken fried rice, and lo mein. We had more food than we could eat, and everything was just outstanding. The wings were the highlight (totally addictive), but all of the dishes were top notch. The fried rice was some of the best we had ever tasted! The food was so good that we went again for takeout a couple of nights later! We doubled down on the fried rice and dry wings, but this time tried curry beef as well. Awesome! You know it's good when locals are packing the place out, and it was definitely packed on both nights (during the week). Highly recommend this place to anyone, and hope to be back again some day!

Chinese Food with Korean Cuisine

By Infodiva L |

Very good with a variety of Chinese food dishes. I have had the Korean wings and a few other classic dishes. I ordered food for takeout. I sometimes prefer this than eating in the chaotic restaurant. Parking can be a challenge but the phone order and pickup process went smoothly and the food was good.

Busy China Bistro Excels

By Papa G |

Wings..."these are a few of my favorite things". And San Tung hooks up a very nice version! Way better than the usual over coated and sauced versions elsewhere. Gigantic Dumplings are big bold and brimming with flavor. Noodles were decent too. Not sure how to avoid the wait just yet but I am guessing early or late are your best bets!

Very good neighborhood chinese restaurant

By Florin N |

Very good chinese food at very affordable prices. Highlyappreciated, so during weekend days it may be very busy, so make reseration in advance.

Good but...

By Sarge911 |

So first thing first, the food was good. Probably the best hot and sour soup I have ever had. The garlic green beans were ok but I have had better. The chicken chow mein was also good. At first they announced that the chicken wings were sold out, this was near closing, after we sat down we ordered he diced version which was good. But then we saw other tables order chicken wings. At the end of the night the waiters were all eating and guess what, they also had chicken wings. So we were kinda peeved that we were lied too.

Dry Fried Chicken Wings

By GL |

YOU MUST order the dry fried chicken wings. They are out of this world and be described with one word: D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S! We went here after finding it on Yelp and viewing photos of the dry fried chicken wings. My group's goal was to satisfy our chicken wing craving. Sam Tung's chicken wings both met and surpassed our expectations. The restaurant seems to get extremely busy during peak hours; be prepared to wait. As a whole, we felt like the rest of the menu was so-so. We ordered an array of items and the only dish that stuck out to us were the dry fried chicken wings. I would definitely return to this restaurant just for those wings!

Great food - just as advertised!

By 19860802 |

After reading about how the wait situation is we decided to visit mid Monday afternoon and there was absolutely no wait whatsoever. Ordered the famous wings (of course) and five spice beef noodles and steamed pork dumplings. The wings were just as advertised and better. Best I've ever had and the beef noodles were very good as well. We had to wait forever for the dumplings and by the time it arrived we were already stuffed so we had it to go. Still tasted pretty good that night. Nothing else we will definitely return for the wings.

Great , cheap chinese

By Patricia Odette B |

We came at 5:40 for the opening and didn't have to wait. We ordered the pork dumplings ( excellent), the fried chicken wings ( a must) and the Black bean noodle ( so good ). With beers, it was a great meal for less than $40! And we brought back left overs home!

Great casual dining

By CAD99 |

Our visit to San Tung was prompted by local, on street recommendations. We were extremely pleased with our Experience! A very popular, busy place. Expect to wait in line, but well worth it. Seems the specialty of the house is their "crack" chicken wings. Probably the best I've ever had! The combination fried rice is amazing. Service is quick, friendly and efficient. Parking is somewhat of A nightmare, but there is some off- street nearby. I will definitely return anytime in the area.

Good Take On Shandong (Northern) Chinese Cuisine

By BoardingPass609020 |

The ORIGINAL DRY FRIED CHICKEN WINGS yielded a split decision at our table; my wife thought they were rocking, but they were simply too unrelentingly sweet for me. The fry guy at San Tung obviously knows what he's doing. The wings were very lightly battered and they had a terrific crunch. I just like more balance in sauces, that's all. The sauce coating the wings was basically a honey/sticky sweet with maybe a few garlic & ginger accents that honestly were completely lost at sea. I tried spiking the sauce with heat, but knew that by the time I got the chili factor in the same ballpark as the sugar level there'd be no way to taste what the heck the sauce was coating. Well, who cares what I think, right? This place is known for these wings by everyone within (at least) a 250-mile radius of 1031 Irving! And folks love 'em! San Tung's noodles are terrific. Very good product and last-minute execution yielding noodles with great density, resilience & chew. I haven't had the soup noodles yet, but the cold and hot noodle plates have had great noodles. Depending on your predilections, though, you might not always like the sauces. For instance, we weren't big fans of the sauce on the COLD NOODLES. It was too watery and overly abundant for us, to the point of being soupy. It didn't cling to the noodles at all. I liked the five-spice flavor permeating the beef, but, to my palate, that flavor didn't overlay well with the sauce. Similar deal with the (hot) NOODLES WITH PEANUT SAUCE. The noodles themselves were terrific, but we weren't big fans of the sauce, which contained shrimp, scallops, water chestnuts, mushrooms, onions and peas. The accompaniments were fine, but the peanut sauce was overly thick & gloppy, to the point where it texturally overwhelmed the shellfish & wonderful noodles. The boiled SHRIMP AND LEEK DUMPLINGS were very good, but remember that you have to like and appreciate boiled dumplings to like these. Keep in mind that the filling emphasizes good chive/allium flavor and that you aren't supposed to be getting the same shrimp hit that you'd look forward to in a steamer basket full of Cantonese ha gow. Don't let the fact that "shrimp" takes pride of place in the name of the dish fool you. The skins were a hair on the thick side given the relative delicacy and lightness of the filling, but they were cooked through perfectly and had great texture without being overly gummy. The boiled PORK AND CABBAGE DUMPLINGS were really delicious. The skins were perfect on their own and in relation to the filling. I like the way the kitchen didn't hard-pack the pork and cabbage forcemeat. Instead, they used a light hand resulting in a delicate, tender interior that contrasted perfectly with the skins. The TWICE COOKED PORK featured sliced pork tenderloin, bell peppers, cabbage & willow tree fungus in a spicy garlic sauce. The pork was tender (though not very porky) and the veggies were nice 'n crisp. The sauce, however, was way over-salted and had hardly any garlic oomph. We loved the DRY SAUTEED STRING BEANS. It's a perfect technique for string and long beans, providing that puckered, wrinkled exterior and crunchy interior. And the whole thing is bathing lightly in a garlicky sauce. San Tung adds a salty/fermented note with some thinly-sliced Chinese pickle, which you don't always see in this dish. Worthy of a re-order.

Horrible service/Great food

By Khaiman F |

Some of the best Chinese food on the planet...Be warned when you order takeout CHECK YOUR ORDER INFRONT OF THEM!!! About every other time we order they have messed up my items for pick up... If you make the drive all the way home and drive back they will only replace your order with no offer for a discount or refund. I have worked in the restaurant industry for decades and have never experienced such a disregard for the guests experience. If a party of four (a 4 top) in my restaurant ordered 4 filets and the server came out with 3 filets and 1 chicken, the manager would immediately approach the guest with the wrong order, apologize, offer to let the table taste the chicken if they wish and bring over the filet the guest ordered. That guest would have their dinner bought for them because of the mistake the restaurant made. It's awakard and the experience for the guest has been sullied. I on the other hand had to drive to pick up the food, drive all the way home, open my food and find my order is wrong, bring the wrong items all the way back, to be greeted by a guy who would not apologize but blame the kitchen and then be handed off to a chef/manager who also couldn't find it in himself to apologize and correct the issue. I firmly believe they should have made me the dishes I ordered and given me a refund or a discount and at the very least admit fault and apologize. I understand this is one of the busiest restaurants in the city and for good reason but I hope they haven't gotten so big they've gotten sloppy and irreverent toward the guests they host.

Chicken gets better with each bite!

By PQ529 |

First off, come early and you'd stand a better chance of snagging a table. We made the mistake of coming at past 830 on a Saturday night and we were pretty much told to expect to wait for 1.5 hours. We decided to have Sunday brunch and arrived before 11am, so got a table. In the next 15 minutes though, the place was packed. The chicken wings... I will focus on that. It is THAT GOOD. Each bite tastes better and better. It's got plum sauce and a little spice to it. Unbelievable! We also had some black bean sauce noodle, some shrimp dish and duck. But oh my, it's the chicken that I shall not forget!

Great chicken wings

By SeeTheWorld4Peace |

We found this place on Google Maps, as it was close to the museums in Golden Gate Park. It turned out to be a great find. We had the lunch plates, all of which were delicious, but on the advice of someone leaving, we also ordered a plate of chicken wings for the table, which were spectacular – just the right amount of seasoning. The place was packed and we were lucky to get a table without waiting for very long.

Yum. I didnt expect that!

By Maya |

While looking for something to eat, we came across a huge crowd of people waiting for the restaurant to open up. We didn't understand what the fuss was about so we asked around and we were told they offer the best chicken wings in town. We decided to give it a try. There are 2 restaurants just next to each other, owned by the same person. They have the same name, the one on the lft is #1 and the one on the right is #2, which has fewer items on the menu, but the main dishes are in both. This place is so good that it already has a waiting list at 5:05 pm when it opens at 5 pm. Highlly recommended-seaweed soup (the small one is good for 2 people, but since its so good I wouldn't take less than a medium) and the wings are AMAZING!!! A perfect combination of sweet and spicy. I cant wait to go back! All dishes looked good and huge (most customers went home with a doggy bag).

So good-ruined me for Chinese food at home!

By Rmgm_0117 |

So, this was an amazing experience for me but also very sad. Sad because I knew that I would never have this quality of Chinese food back home. Regular Chinese food tastes like all other Chinese food, right? Well this one doesn't. This is what all other restaurants are trying to do! Best food I have ever tasted and no stomach pain!! There is a line out the door before opening and the wait list begins 5min after opening. Check yelp for specifics on the best food-I loved the chicken wings.

Take out

By Rose F |

I ordered the chicken wings to go, very tasty, along with shrimp appetizer and rice. Everything was delicious. The only bad part is the parking!

Wow!

By 46JimH46 |

We never heard of dry fried chicken wings but these were absolutly great ! Hot and sour soup was also wonderful. Cant wait to visit SF again

Very crowded restaurant

By BayAreaTraveler6338 |

Be prepared to see a long line outside the restaurant. Luckily, we had a reservation for a a group of 12. Overall, the food was very good especially the chicken wings - lots of flavor and a generous portion. The green beans and the beef with snow peas were pretty tasty as well. However, I would skip the tea smoked duck, not much flavor, dry, and not worth the price. Parking can be challenging since they don't have their own lot, all street parking. Service was just average.

Excellent Chinese food

By Steve S |

This place is always packed... a good indicator of how good their food is. Their specialty, the chicken wings, are fantastic. They also have some Chinese dishes popular with Koreans (which I am) -- black bean noodles, sweet and sour pork/beef, jjampong (spicy, mixed seafood/meat soup noodles). We try to make multiple trips to this place whenever we visit SF.

Green Beans a Must

By sanantonio18 |

Now I know why almost every table ordered green beans. Perfectly crunchy with just enough heat. Not usually a wing fan but the chicken wings are worth it with a yummy sticky coating. We also ordered a stir fry and some dumplings. A great outing with family. Expect a wait, so get name put in early.

Delicious fried chicken!

By Mytreep |

We had a big group and got seated quickly. We ordered several items including chopped fried chicken one with sauce, one with separate sauce. We loved the black noodles. Green beans were too sweet for us. Service was so fast! Food was excellent and I highly recommended this place! It was a challenge to find parking so plan ahead.

DELISH

By Diana L |

The dry fries wings were to die for, with delicious soup to complement it. I went right before the lunch time rush and was seated right before noon. Service was prompt and they made sure I had everything I need.

Go for the wings!

By Bookistan5 |

Yummy wings - some of the best ever. We had the wings, an order of pork dumplings (huge and tasty) , and a noodle dish. The noodles themselves are good, obviously homemade. But the "seafood" that was to accompany them amounted to just a few fragments. This was the only bad note in a good meal. Service is perfunctory but expected for this kind of restaurant. We arrived late, after 9 pm, so the crowd had thinned.

Dry fried chicken wings!

By Echow707 |

I def have my specific goto dishes here. Shrimp and leek dumplings, dry fried wings, and green beans. I’ll occasionally order a dish outside of that which is still good. This place is busy so be strategic if you can. The one downside is getting a seat by the door, when it’s cold, people in line pack inside and a lot of them are clueless or don’t care that their rear ends are up against you when eating. Abit rude.

Thank you reviewers for the best lunch!!

By sugarhigh412 |

After reading all the hugely positive reviews on this restaurant, I decided to give it a try and take my parents here for a lunch in the City. Thank you, TripAdvisor reviewers - you did not let us down! We went for the food that you all recommended - namely, the dry fried chicken, black bean seafood noodles, and the shrimp & leek dumplings. We also ordered a beef dish - the beef with oyster sauce (it is cooked with some veggies as well). Everything was excellent! We all loved the dry fried chicken with the slightly sweet, slightly spicy, sticky sauce, but it was by far my husband's favorite. My favorite was the black bean noodles which came with perfectly cooked (and thankfully not overcooked) squid, scallops, and shrimp, as well as zucchini. We also got the vegetarian eggrolls - that was for my daughter - but she ended up not eating it anyway. I wouldn't recommend those - kind of bland. We came here on a Thursday shortly before 1:00 pm. Only a 5-minute wait for a party of 5. Not bad!! We will definitely return. This is my new favorite Chinese restaurant in the City!!

Was that even chicken......?

By OptimisticNYC |

I honestly thought that we would get good Asian inspired food in San Fran, I think we just chose a bad restaurant. You enter and there is a sign in sheet (we should have left immediately upon seeing that) but we were starving after a long day of sightseeing, so we stayed. The waiter was rushing us and impatient when we asked questions. The food came and it looked so gross, the chicken fried rice was pale and flavorless. We picked out all of the grey chicken, which honestly looked like rat meat. We asked for check and left a full dish of food there on the table. Do NOT EAT HERE

Terrific Chinese Food.

By George P |

Went there for lunch. They are always busy, full of locals. Excellent traditional Chinese dishes. Fast, friendly service.

Great Dried Fried Chicken Wings

By Espen Paaby |

We went here for lunch after cruising the nearby Botanical Garden all morning. Having dumplings and fried rice as our Chinese favourites respectively, we ordered one of each in addition to the signature Dry Fried Chicken Wings. We chose the Pork option for both the dumplings and the fried rice. The fried rice was tasty, the dumplings just like the ones I've had in China, but the best dish was still the Chicken Wings. Absolutely awesome, and I fully understand all the fuzz about them. Just yummy.

Great spot for family dinner!!

By Bozimar |

We arrived at 4:00 pm and got seats right away for our family of five when they opened at 4:30 pm. We enjoyed all the entrees, especially the dry fried chicken, which was a recommendation from our waitress. The staff was quite attentive and the food came out timely so we were not overwhelmed. I would highly recommend this popular restaurant, by the time we left there were quite a few people waiting for tables.

EXCELLENT SERVICE, EXCELLENT PRICES, AVERAGE FOOD

By Lois |

Me and my family decided to visit this restaurant based on reviews that I read on this website. It was our first time in San Francisco and as a familly of 8 deciding where to eat can be difficult so we put our faith in these reviews. We went at peak time on a Monday in holiday season and faced a wait of about 20 minutes, which was pretty fair considering the line was out the door. However, parking was a different story, the restaurant does not have a parking lot, there is street parking however finding a space was difficult and took about 20 minutes. The service was quick and all staff were pleasant and friendly. The portions were huge, they easily could be shared between a couple, the prices were also very fair, on average about $10 for a pork, beef or chicken dish. However, we found the food didn't live up to expectations. It was served very quickly and we did not feel like it was freshly cooked, it felt like it had been kept hot on a hot plate out back ready to serve up quickly once people had ordered. The chicken chow mein was disgusting, I'm not quite sure how they can call the meat they served us chicken, it was more like lumps of fat and it left us wondering whether we were eating chicken at all. We ordered both the beef Satay and Mongolian beef but the beef was soggy without much flavour. The chicken wings did live up to the hype the reviewers have given them! Overall, the service and pricing was good but the food was a complete let down, it's not somewhere where we will be returning to on our visit as it was a let down.

Fabulous meal

By maulihua |

Really appreciated the service from staff, massive meals fresh vegetables, clean restrooms. Highly recommend.

Best Chinese Food

By mja1982 |

This is the best Chinese food I've ever had. Everything is great, but what puts it over the top are the Chicken Wings. They are one of the single best things I have ever eaten in my life. I'm planning another trip to San Francisco just to eat at this restaurant. Don't be scared off by the long lines, it moves faster than you think. Even if it doesn't it's worth the wait.

Best wings ever

By jimles7 |

I am so happy to have come here for their famous Spicy and sweet chicken wings. I recommend getting the dry wings and rolling them in their incredible spicy pepper sauce. This dish reminds me of mixing bourbon chicken and General Tao"s chicken together with more peppers to kick it up. Authentic chinese food on Irving st. & service was good. Go get some of the best wings of your life.

Go early! It gets crowded

By qoo m |

So crowded that you have to wait. They are fast and clean though, and portions are fairly large. Do not miss: the dry fried chicken. That is the best. They also have good noodle options, but do not forgo the chicken. Order everything else around the chicken.

Go for their specialties. Ignore the crappy ratings as they were clueless in their ordering.

By jafman58 |

There are 2 reasons to come here, and they are compelling. Firstly, the chicken wings are the best in the city, sweet/sour and a bit spicy. Next, the soup noodles in a spicy broth Is great. Ask for the one with everything, beef, mussels, squid, veggies. When you visit a Chinese restaurant in the city, ask them where the chef is from and order accordingly..

Best Chinese food we have tasted

By Gill G |

What a find! When you arrive at a Chinese restaurant at 5:30 on a Tuesday and there is a queue, it's good news, but when the people eating are all Chinese you know it has to be very good. Well we were not disappointed.Excellent and varied sauce flavours, beautifully cooked vegetables, large portions (for us Brits) efficient service and great value. What more could we want?

The CHICKEN Kitchen

By Ed O |

The San Tung Chicken is their specialty. Always a must have. Restaurant is usually packed. Come early for dinner around 5:30PM.

Decent for decent price

By vthile |

I usually don't care for Chinese food but these place is pretty good. I love their chicken wings and I love the black bean noodles. Service was eh as they were busy and some seemingly weren't great at English. They were pretty busy so don't be surprised if you're splitting tables with other people.

Best Chinese food ever

By Andrea A |

We visited San Tung after a trip to Golden Gate Park. The restaurant was busy as soon as it opened at 5, mostly with locals which is always a good sign. We were seated straight away and chose the sweat and sour pork, sauted shrimp and the dry fried chicken wings. The food arrived quickly and tasted great. Definitely the best Chinese food we've had and the staff were helpful and friendly as well. A real gem.

Delicious Chinese Food In the Sunset Area

By bccrab |

After spending a morning in Golden Gate Park we were craving Chinese food but didn't want to go all the way to ChinaTown. I found this place on Yelp and we walked over. On entering there was a lot of people waiting but when I saw the platters of food being served I could tell this would be well worth the wait. There is a white board by the door and you write your name and the number of people in your party and just hang out. It took us about 20 minutes to be seated but once you are situated the food is really terrific. Service is fast but not rushed despite the crowds. I felt this was one of the best Chinese meals I've ever had. The next day I was tempted to return but we were in another part of the city and didn't have time but this will be on my list of go to places whenever I'm in SF from now on.

Chinese delight

By BlondieOriginal2014 |

We saw the reviews on TA while searching for sizzling rice soup - theirs was excellent, as was the mushy pork. very one seemed to be getting the chicken wings and the green beans, so will have to try them next time. Location is near UCSF med center, so its of young people. Write your name & number of people on the board - the wait looks like but isn't. Service was a bit slow at times, but at least they gave you time to finish each dish...The waiter did forget our rice (how do they do that in a Chinese place?!!), but we were just as glad as we got full on what we had. Definitely worth a return visit.

Great food expect a line to get a table

Fried Chicken Wings Fix

By Faylene |

Was looking for fried chicken wings close to my new home in San Francisco. A co-worker recommended this spot. The wings were delicious. Very crispy. You can order them without or with the sauce. I like the sauce! The sauce was a little hot but also had a tang to it. I also ordered the fried calamari which I didn’t like at all. I would stick with chicken entrees. Not sure about their seafood. Maybe I’ll try something else next time. Ordering to go was a little hectic and the place was packed. You give them your phone number at the back of the restaurant and then come back in 10-15 minutes to get your food. Or you can eat at the place but tables fill up quickly. The place is very informal and from the outside looks like a regular Chinese spot but it’s worth a try.

Patience is a virtue

By SFLollyPopCouple |

Yes, if you come anywhere near peak time lunch or dinner u will have to wait; but believe u me, it will be worth it. It does not matter what you order from this extensive menu you will not be disappointed. From the 1st day we came here and saw the servers processing a huge box of green beans we have never come here without ordering them. I think they go through 2 or 3 huge boxes of them every day. So fresh and never overcooked, just the right bite to it. I think that every table gets either the dried fried chicken or calamari. so scrumptiously delicious. just the right kick to it, and if you don't eat the red peppers, you will be fine. They also have some dim sum type dumplings with leeks that are a super tasty start while awaiting the calamari. we try to bring some home but end up eating it all, it is sooooooooooooo good.

Get the chicken wings!

By Paul W |

The fried chicken wings are as good as everyone says. Definitely a 5 star wing! The restaurant is pretty dirty (cockroaches walking around) and the service is just okay. When you get there write your name on a board when you first walk in, then wait outside for them to call your name. As you are seated you are given kimchi and hot tea. I tried the chicken, shrimp and leek dumplings, and black bean noodles. The chicken was amazing! (worth ignoring the cockroaches), but the other two items were just average. Overall I would go back to eat the chicken wings again, but I do hope they clean the place up before they get shut down by the health department!

Chicken Wings

By Siam255 |

This place is well-known for their chicken wings. Wings are moderately glazed with Asian themed flavoring--probably has hoisin and is slightly sweet but not too much. The wings are bigger than Buffalo style wings. Wings were just okay to me since I'm more of a savory kinda gal and prefer more of a dry rather than wet chicken wings.

Order what the locals order

By Ronnie_texas67uk |

We made a huge mistake and ordered wrong. Given what we ordered compared to the dishes others got we missed out. Lesson learned. This place is full of locals in the know. Follow their lead and avoid the sweet and sour!

Great for sitdown, Great for Takeout!

By John H |

We ate here sitdown recently, and then had takeout. Both were excellent. Especially tasty are the chinese wings. Also the standards, including shrimp with lobster sauce. Trendy, for a reason.

Good, inexpensive, authentic Chinese food off the beaten path of San Francisco!!

By kathy c |

A friend from the area said this was a must go to restaurant. The prices are fantastic considering the San Francisco cost at most restaurants. It's not fancy, but it is fantastic. Get the fried chicken..... Everyone does!!! We also got the lunch cashew chicken and it was delicious and plentiful.

Delicious Food!

My niece came from the East coast to check out UCSF and do some research on the housing situation since she was accepted by the medical school for a residency. I saw this restaurant while I was looking around the surrounding area on Google Maps. On Saturday, 3/27, four of us came to this restaurant at 11:45 AM. We were seated right away. We ordered some dumplings, pot-stickers, a pork dish, and a beef dish. While I was looking over the menu to choose a chicken dish, the waitress reminded me that the restaurant is famous for its dry fried chicken wings so I ordered one. Everything was delicious. I noticed that every table ordered the chicken dish. Price was very reasonable. All these dishes came to $85.00, before tip. All service persons were very friendly. By the time we left the restaurant, around 12:45 PM, there was a line waiting for tables. Will definitely come back when I'm in the area.

Good Food, Good Service

By Leland Chung |

Went here to celebrate my brother's birthday and had a great meal. We waited about 15 minutes to get a table but it was worth it, the chicken wings are great!

Best Asian style wings. PERIOD!

By daniel v |

The appeal of this restaurant isn’t the Chinese food, which is good by the way. It’s the Asian style chicken wings. There are several Asian wing places in the Bay Area but there is something unique about the wings here. They are crispy but not crunchy and have the perfect amount of flavor in the sauce. Every time I’m in the city San Tung is a must.

The dry chicken wings are astronomical !

By retiredveteran56 |

My son told me about the wings at this place and said that they were simply "out of this world good" . . . and he was absolutely correct . The meals we had started out with Kimchi and soup , and then came the wings . . . ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING ! ! ! We also ordered Lemon Chicken , Sweet and Sour Pork , and Cherry Pork - all equally as good. BUT , as far as I am concerned , I would order A LOTS of the Dry Chicken Wings and enjoy every wing as much as I enjoyed the first one that I ate. This should definitely be a stop in SF if you want excellent wings within the city !

Be There Early To Avoid Long Wait

By chanyu1 |

This popular local restaurant is ALWAYS crowded so if you want to dine here, be there before it opens and get in line. The seating turn over is good as most diners understand not to linger after the completion of their meal and will leave. But even then, the wait for a table could be uncomfortably long. The wait however could also be shortened if you don't mind sharing a table with others. Once seated, order their signature dish, the fried chicken in their special sauce. This is why most diners, including myself, are willing to wait for a table to eat here. Also order their steam shrimp dumpling, a killer dish when eaten with kimchee and vinegar. Their fried rice and noodle in meat sauce are also worthwhile considerations. Another option is to order take out but be prepared to wait half an hour or more for the order...

Good Chinese

By DonUTravels |

Great Chinese food. Just looking at the pictures again make me want to go back already. A great place for some good spicy food. The staff was very friendly and the place was very clean. Overall a great place.

Delicious spring bean and chicken wing

By CarolinaHisman |

The queue is long in this restaurant. This one is a chinese korean restaurant. We ordered black noodle, chicken wing, spring bean and dry dumpling. All the food are delicious and not expensive (we are 5 adults, 2 children). You should try this one, but come earlier

Excellent!

By Ninoska C |

All food was great! Price-quality relation is good, the chicken wings is a must, try to visit it at 5pm in order to avoid long waiting lines.

Our favorite local Chinese restaurant!

By 40Lucyruth |

Our favorite Chinese restaurant in San Francisco! We especially like the dry fried green beans and sticky fried chicken wings.

Great food, long wait

By Tiffine |

The wings, noodles and potstickers here ar hard to be put the wait is usually 30mins min and they don't reservations. Still delicious I though.

Overall a good SF staple.

By Claire |

A little over-hyped sometimes, but it's a solid place, even with the current take-out only situation. We always get the dry fried angel chicken wings, pan fried potstickers, shrimp & leek dumplings, and mu shu pork as well as one of their noodle dishes. Upside is they provide real mu shu pork wrappers vs some places that think they can get away with burrito or tortilla wrappers. Would recommend calling ahead of time for take-out orders ... at least 45+ min wait during dinner rush (ie 6pm onwards).

Best Chinese Food

By Esther M |

San Tung is a hidden gem, located outside of San Francisco's Chinatown on 1031 Irving Street. Everything we ordered was delicious and sizzling hot. The restaurant favorite is the "Spicy and sweet chicken wings". Every table in the restaurant had several plates of these sticky hot delights. Authentic Chinese food. Prices are good. Make sure you read the menu about large groups, when paying the gratuity. Not the best customer service, because the waiters are running around to make sure orders are placed quickly. The orders come out fresh, hot and quick. FYI, learn to use chopsticks. They do have forks, but only on request. I'm still dreaming about those wings.

I drove for 2 hours to have these chicken wings.

By amper_sandy |

It was incredibly worth it. Expect to wait. And maybe don't leave the front of the restaurant after you write your name on the list though because the staff WILL skip over you quickly and not be apologetic about it.

This place will ruin all your other wings forever

By IlanB |

If you read reviews about Chinese restaurants, you will probably encounter the same "issues" mentioned again and again. The decor, the service, yadda, yadda, yadda. I'm not saying these things are not important - They are. But. Sometimes, and usually, it won't be a fancy restaurant but a small family business - It will be a hidden gem. This is one of those times. I've been here dozen of times. Ordered these wings even more than that. I don't know what they put in there, but I just can't stop. You have to try these wings. There is no going back afterward. One serving is big enough for a big adult, there is really no need to have anything else, it just won't compare anyway. Have fun.

THE BEST CHICKEN WINGS EVER!

By Martha2950 |

When the name San Tung kept popping up from reading material, email, conversations with friends, and tourist information - we were prompted to try this restaurant. We were told to order the chicken wings with the honey chili sauce and the dried fried string beans. We ordered and we ate. Yes, those chicken wings are finger licking good! The best ever. We are regular patrons. We even recommend this restaurant to all our friends and relatives. Everyone at this restaurant has a plate of chicken wings, either dried or with sauce, on their table. We tried the seafood squid ink noodles - it was just okay--kind of starchy and mushy. We have also tried the potstickers, steamed dumplings and chow mein. All delicious and recommend. This place always has a line. When you enter the restaurant, write your name on the wait list. Our usual wait time is about 15-30 minutes. The staff is friendly, efficient and quick. I am hungry just thinking about those chicken wings. This is the only restaurant that I know that makes these wet chicken wings. They make them in Missouri but it is too far to go there. Go and order the chicken wings and you'll agree with me that they are different, delicious and finger licking good!

the wings are the thing

A friend told us about this place. Terrific wings, the place was packed. Definitely worth checking out.

Northern Chinese Food

By Hawaii 808 |

Everytime i come to San Francisco i need to come and eat here. I love the Chicken Wings, Hot Pepper Pork, and Steamed Dumplings! They have never disappointed me with the taste of the food. The food here is a different style of chinese and it's good. They also serve kimchee here but its not your usual kimchee cause it's sweet. Eat here and you wont be disappointed!

great food

By breeze1der |

We went to dinner on a Thursday night arriving about 5 pm. There was no wait although our table wasn't far from the door but yet it wasn't on top of the color. Anyway we had a small soup that was about 4 bowls. We had Chinese noodles that were amazingly lo g making it hard to serve but none the less delicious. Finally we had their chicken wings. Best wings. Our meal was plentyful and only cost 26.00. The restaurant was packed when we left at 7 . Oh one more thing the food comes out hot in temperature. Fresh and hot.

Worth the wait!

By PandaLovesTravel |

Worth the wait for the diced dry fried chicken and dumplings. Glad they opened up a second side to the restaurant right next door.

Great spot

By mysteryb |

The fried chicken wings are as good as everyone says. Depending on how busy it is service can be patchy, appetizers served last...that kind of thing. Didn't bother me, but that could be annoying. Food is better than average for SF though, so worth it in my book.

Can't get enough of the chicken!

By PDM |

I'm just going to tell you exactly what to order. If you want to read a more thorough review, this is not for you. Original Dry Fried Chicken Black Bean Sauce Noodles Dried Sauteed Green Beans Combination Fried Rice

I don't do chicken wings.........

By medussalox |

It's true, normally I don't do chicken wings, no bones for me thank you very much. However, I slightly reluctantly gave them a try as they are a speciality at San Tung. Oh wow, wow, wow! To die for. The rest of the food was equally good. Can't wait for my next trip to SF so I can go to San Tung again!

Yum - for excellent Chinese food this place is it.

By Pennymohr |

Excellent food, fast service. Particularly outstanding were the noodle dishes, dried chicken wings, and bok choy with mushrooms. It gets crowded fast and only takes reservations for parties of 6 or more, so go early or be prepared to wait outside a bit. So glad we got this home town insiders tip to go here.

There's always a wait but it's worth it!!

By BJNuff |

Try the dry sautéed green beans (Thy also do asparagus in season) They are amazing Also enjoyed the shrimp and snow peas, shrimp in black bean sauce & chicken moo shu They do not take reservations but efficiently seat you It is a bit noisy if that bothers you Be sure to stroll the area as there are interesting Asian shops in the area

Good Chinese restaurant with great Chicken Wings in a funky district of town

By Peter G |

Arrive early. Extremely busy place. Fast ,efficient service. Good Chinese food but specialty is the Chicken Wings , you have to try those and almost everybody in the restaurant was ordering them !

Excellent

By frog2010 |

The number 76 plate speaks for it self. . The place will be visited again ! The crowds are my only thing , but what do you except good food brings crowds . I'll try to figure out the off hours . They do have take out .

The Best!

By 46JimH46 |

We haven't been here for a few years but came back during this trip to SF. Absolutely the best chicken wings ever!!!!! The hot n sour soup was wonderful along with the traditional Chinese dishes. The vegetables were done to perfection and the service was great. Wonderful job!

Best chicken wings

By Marina G |

While for the most part this is typical chinese restaurant, they do serve the killer chicken wings. They are the best chicken wings you will find in the city. I typically order: sizzling rice soup with seafood, string beans, chicken wings (we usually need more than 1 order) and rice. They don't take reservations unless you have party of 7 or more and usually you have to wait in line in order to get in. However, if you come right at the opening time, you should be able to get in. There is a sister restaurant next door that has a smaller menu that is easier to get in; however, while they serve chicken wings they don't serve sizzling rice soup.

Excellent food

By Robert S |

The food at San Tung was delicious. It's a small, busy restaurant. The staff was decent, not overly friendly but well trained and attentive. This restaurant is known for its wings and dry chicken. The pot stickers are definitely worth a try but order them first as they make them fresh and take a bit to arrive at the table. The restaurant was clean but the restroom could use a remodel and the hand towels were set on top of the covered case and graffiti covered the walls.

Never a disappointment!

By vacAZian |

First off, to be quite honest, service could be better. However, this is a place you visit for the food, not necessarily the service. My family has been visiting San Francisco since I was a child, and every time we come, we try to make a visit to San Tung. We always get the same things because it's just that fantastic! Shrimp and leek dumplings, pork dumplings, black bean sauce noodles with seafood, spicy peanut sauce noodles with seafood, and the famous dry fried chicken wings. So good! The wings are a perfect combination of sweet and heat from the chili. I recommend coming during lunch, dinner is always busy and the wait times are varying.

The is where to locals come of good Chinese food

By Terence L |

San Tung is the place to check out good Chinese-American food in San Francisco. Located in the Inner Sunset, it is a bit away from Union Square and Embarcadero. It is easy to get to, as they are very close to the N Muni line. If you're visiting Golden Gate Park or Upper Haight St, this is a must visit. I highly recommend the Original Dry Fried Chicken Wings and Dry Black Bean Sauce Noodles. The dumplings are solid, but can be a little dry sometimes. Service is quick and efficient. The dinner room can get busy and crowded quickly. If you are part of a small party, you may have to share a larger table with another small group. But, that's all good. You'll impress a local with your discovery.

Solid Chinese restaurant. Go for the wings.

By SometimesFlyer |

Solid Chinese food, long time stalwart of the dining scene on the area. The house special fried chicken wings a must try. Their handmade noodles very good too. The dumplings get mixed reviews. I had much better elsewhere. Reasonable prices. Gets crowded so either come early or be prepared to wait a little.

The Best Fried Chicken And Pork

By The Tit: The Truth In Travel |

San Tung is literally the best deal in SF. If you like fried chicken this place is it. However they make it with as sweet sauce which you can ask to have it on the side. Also, the fried pork is great too. Locals are always here. Service is ok. But food speaks for itself.

Chinese Fried Chicken - diced

By mjd496 |

Ok, so this isn't going to be on a low-calorie menu, but my sinful favorite, Chinese Fried Chicken-diced, is a delicious treat. An order is sufficient for two people, so share. Ordinarily very busy....ft there early...like 11am when it first opens..and if there is a wait, quickly put your name up on the whiteboard just inside the door. When I'm in town, I always consider it a victory to have come here!

Best Noodle Chicken Soup I've Ever Had!

By Jenn M |

WOW! Such great food, but plan to get there early because it fills up FAST-like, line-around-the-block-within-the-first-hour-in-the-evening fast. They're famous for their wings and dumplings, and their soup is incredible! Definitely check them out! Super fast service, too.

Outstanding regional food

By Rick T |

Have been here a number of times, and never disappointed. We frequently take out food for adults and children. The chicken wings are terrific

As good as ever

By UW Husky 1968 |

We've been driving up from LA at least once a yr but haven't done so for 2-3 yrs. This was one of our favorite eating places, crowds and all. Glad to find the food is still excellent - had the wings (dry), pot stickers and noodles with pork and preserved veggies. Lunch time parking is still a hassle but the food is just as good as ever - still on our Fav list.

Authentic and delicious food...

By mjd496 |

Well, I love this place. This is not a restaurant that you go to for ambiance...you go for the excellent food. This is a popular restaurant with locals and it is busy fast. If you are not there when it opens (11am, I think), be prepared to wait and monitor your place on the sign in sheet (a white board on the wall that is "honor-based"...hopefully no one moves their name ahead of you! Seriously, you will enjoy it once you get in! Close to Golden Gate park in the Sunset district.

Good food but long wait.

By Angela R |

We had a hour long wait, but the chicken wings were definitely worth it! We also had the green beans and dumplings. All were delicious! The place was a little loud and crazy but that was part of the fun!

Must get chicken Wings

By Allen L |

This place is know for their dry fried chicken wings. get there early since the lines can get pretty long. but once you''re seated. get the chicken wings! sweet fried goodness. the dumplings are good but you can get those anywhere. They even oped a restaurant next door for the overflow traffic.

Great family style Chinese Food

By OctaneGal |

It was recommended by a acquaintance since we don't know the area at all. Went there with the family and we loved it. Ordered their famous deep fried chicken wings, Pot Stickers, String Beans, Braised Tofu and pickled mustard noodle soup. It was plenty for the four of us. It's packed on the night we went, It was raining heavily so not sure it is because of that or they are always packed. Parking isn't great! Street parking only, I guess it's typical San Francisco parking situation. We had 2 cars and one got lucky and found a parking spot right across yet the other had to park 4 blocks away. Again, San Francisco was having a heavy downpour that night which made the 4 block away parking the more miserable.

Great food and a fun hustle-and-bustle environment

By R0adTripper66 |

Rave reviews led us to make the city bus trip from Van Ness and Geary to this completely different part of San Francisco. A short line (don't forget, as we did, to put your name up on the dry erase board when you enter.) A nice table for two back by the cashier with view into the fully staffed kitchen. The food comes quite quickly. Dry rub chicken wings (of course!) --- succulent crispy and delicious. Excellent chubby potstickers and delightful little dumplings of shrimp and leek. Huge menu, reasonably priced in the $10-$15 range, good sized portions.

Great Chinese!!

By jag1975 |

When we first got here we were a little worried. There were a lot of people hanging around outside. Then we placed our order and were amazed at the quality. The food was delicious and very plentiful. If you are looking for quality Chinese food in the Outer Sunset area this IS the place to go.

Chicken wings!

By milton919 |

This place has been here a long time and I've been coming here a long time. Their dried fried chicken wings are some of the tastiest around. Their dumplings and potstickers are very good as well. Their chow mein are good but portions are small compared to other places. This place gets crowded all the time so come here early or prepare to wait.

Chinese with a hint of Korean

By Hawaii 808 |

This is our GO TO Chinese restaurant when we come to San Francisco! The 3 main dishes (my opinion) that you have to try is the Pepper Pork, Steamed Pork Dumplings, and their famous Fried Chicken Wings! The chicken is seriously addicting and only order the Pork if you like spicy. You won’t be disappointed!

Homemade quality

By thscang |

Tried the fried chicken which was highly recommended but found it disappointing- a tad too over-fried. The dumplings are too salty for my preference. Good place to get some homemade style food, just dont expect exquisite food.

Fast Yummy Chinese!!!

By ekojim |

We where craving Chinese but did not have time to fight with the traffic in china town before our flight. So we stopped here, the sat us down in less than 10 mins. We ordered the Mongolian beef and fried wings, walnut shrimp, green beans, fried rice and lemon chicken. But our favorite was the chicken wings. I liked the table setting, perfect for big groups. Jackie our waiter was super friendly. I will definitely return to this place in our next trip to SF!

Ma po Tofu

By Mira C |

I ordered ma po tofu. It was quite oily. Price was on the higher side. Their complimentary kimchi was good. Line was too long so we decided to take out instead.

BEST ASIAN FOOD EVER!!!!!!!!!

By Nathan K |

I love it there, everything I ordered was delicious and a ate sooooo much. I would definitely go back. My favorite was the dry fried stuff. AWSOME!!!

Outstanding Chinese Food (Sunset District)

By Yguy94086 |

After about 6:20 or so, there were people standing around to get in so be prepared or get there early. Korean influenced: the kim chi on the table was the hottest I've experienced. Portions were huge, so you might want to order something and wait to see whether you can eat more. We ordered a medium hot and sour soup, which was really more than enough for two people. We also ordered, and finished, a pork and chicken dish as well, and it was delicious. Most patrons appeared to be Chinese. Street Parking is all that is available, and it is awful, so be prepared to walk.

can

By Mathilde Garnier |

Came here after bay to breakers because my friend couldn't stop raving about how good their fried chicken is. I was starving at this point and was getting agitated aka hangry at its finest. My friend kept reassuring me that this place was worth the wait and effort. The place was busy. Like crazy crowded dim sum on a Sunday in Chinatown busy! There was a constant influx of people coming in and out of the restaurant. We waited briefly for about 20 minutes and were seated at a table of four. Thank god because at this point I was about to faint. I allowed my friends to take the wheel and order. We ordered 2 plates of the famous fried chicken, one plate of green beans and one plate of the leek dumplings. Omg!!!!! The wait was well worth it. All I can recall was that I was ugly eating and didn't care because it was so damn good. Double fisting of food was a must. Licking of fingers like an uncivilized animal is a must. Sauce on the outside of your mouth dribbling down your chin is a must. And crying knowing that it will soon be over when the last chicken wing was plucked from the plate is a must. All I can remember was i kept saying the following sentence over and over like a broken record "I'm so sad that this is going to be over. I'm so sad that this is almost over. I'm so sad I'm so sad." And you know what? I was sad and I still am because I live in Los Angeles and know that the next time I'll get to have this delicious chicken in my belly is when I go back to bay to breakers in 2020. The sadness! If you live in this area I envy you. You must go here! The best fried chicken I've ever had! Ever!

Great food, bring friends!

By Mister-Markie |

Came here with friends for lunch, and I was the only one here for the first time. Came about 1pm, and waited a bit for a table for four, as this place is VERY popular! The food is the reason to come here, as the ambience is actually very typical of a restaurant in Chinatown rather than an upscale suburban fine dining restaurant - but that's the best reason to come, for good food! The place itself is clean, busy (read "crowded") and well lit, and a bustling experience to be sure. We were seated and promptly given menus and waters, and a server arrived within a couple of minutes for our order, but the menu is several pages so we needed a bit more time. The draw for us were the wings and the fish, so those were for sure items to order, but we also added a few more items. Ultimately we settled on egg rolls and kimchi for appetizers, original dry fried chicken wings, dried sautéed string beans, dry fried flounder fillet, black mushroom and tofu (bean curd), vegetable chow mein and vegetable fried rice. Considering the volume of people eating, the food came rather quickly, albeit in batches of one or two plates at a time. The kitchen itself extends all the way to the back, and we could see into it - it was big and well lit, with a lot of help! We soon ran out of room on the table, and I initially wondered why we were given small plates, the kind you usually find for bread use, rather than regular dinner service size plates; but they would definitely not fit with all the food plates people ordered. The kimchi was very good, tasty and spicy with red peppers. Not everyone liked it, but I devoured it almost by myself. The egg rolls were good, crispy and not greasy with that delicious red sweet sauce - yummy. The vegetable chow mein was rather tasteless, very bland. The vegetable fried rice was almost as bland, and rather mushy as well. These two items had us worried about the rest of the food. However, the stars of the meal were the chicken wings and the fish fillets. They were the two go-to items even before we got here, and they did not fail us. The wings were cooked well and slathered in tasty (and sticky!) sauce. The fish, battered and cooked nicely, were just as tasty in their own sauce. And the pieces were just the right size for a bite or two for each piece. The other dishes were good - the black mushrooms and tofu were plentiful and in a brown sauce. I used the fried rice for the base, rather than ordering a side of brown rice. The rice was mushy, but with the mushrooms and tofu it was fine for the use. The beans were good as well, tasty and firm. There were a lot of them on the plate, almost too much for even the four of us, so some went home in a take-home box. The service was good, with water and tea refills when needed, and our server Weina Shi was very efficient and professional. Overall, a nice experience and good food. The chow mein and rice were disappointing, but the chicken wings and fish were the saviors of the day; I feel other specialty dishes may be as outstanding, and I hope to test my theory in a future visit!

The Chicken Wings of your dreams!

By RAINBOW1 |

Our son used to live very close to San Tung and we used to stop by on every trip to devour their delectable chicken wings, which we prefer dry style. The first thing he missed upon moving to the suburbs was being able to pop in and grab some wings. After 5 years, we drove into the city just to eat those wings, and they were just as good as remembered. You can tell the waiter to adjust the spiciness. Every table had some. We also thought the green beans were excellent, and nearly every table had both. The lunch specials are served until 3, when they close down, so be sure to be there 10 minutes before otherwise you will be disappointed. We are not big fans of the famous black bean noodles, but we do like the leek dumplings. If you try to park a block away from it, (higher numbered street) you will have better luck at parking.

Good chicken wings and not much else

By dmdvfl333 |

This place is known for its dry fried chicken wings and it is almost always crowded. If you come here for their "famous" chicken wings and nothing else, I suggest that you go over to the bakery next door (right) and order to go . By doing so, you can skip waiting for your table in the restaurant and that could be up to an hour or longer if during meal time. In fact, you can sit down in the bakery and order from San Tung Restaurant menu.

Good Chinese Take out

By MrPickwick |

Never mind Chinatown. You can find it here. We did take-out on a Monday night, and the lines for a table were long. Try their hot-and-sour soup, Mongolian beef (watch the peppers!) and other dishes.

Chicken Wings Awesome

By Chad C |

This place will have a wait but it's well worth it. Had the chicken wings, chicken fried rice, string beans and pot stickers all were amazing.

Is it worth the wait?

By moopup |

My wife and daughter and I recently decided to eat here. We were aware of the reputation of a long wait and thought that a Sunday evening at 4:30 would be a good choice of not having a long wait. Wow were we wrong! Even at that time it still took us about 50 minutes to be seated. I don't so much mind a long wait if there is somewhere to wait but San Tung has a very small entrance area that really only accommodates about 10 people but there were at least 20 waiting inside and even more outside the door and on the sidewalk out front. and of course it was raining. Even all this didn't deter us from waiting all though it was kind of annoying that the people coming in to wait didn't want to move out of the way for the people who were trying to leave. Once we were finally seated the problem I had was with the table they sat us at. At first I thought cool, a table just for the 3 of us and out of the way of the front door where everybody is waiting and spilling into the dining room. WRONG! We were seated at the last table in the back and right where the takeout area is. Turns out there was continually a line right at our table and it felt like we were on display and people kept bumping into me and the table. OK, now to the food and service. The service I thought was OK to good and the waiters were all pleasant for the most part. The menu was kind of a little overwhelming but every plate passing by looked really good and with so many people you know all the food has to be very fresh. This being the case, you just pick a few things that sound good. We shared everything we ordered to get a taste of a few things and all was good. We started by ordering the sizzling rice soup and it was I thought just pretty average. We ordered the famous dry wings for an appetizer. These were as good as promised but like other reviewers noted they didn't come out as an appetizer, they showed up 1/2 way or more through the meal. I don't think I would order them again because I really didn't think they were the best choice for a Chinese place, more bar or pub food. I would order or try the eggrolls next time, although I didn't notice a single order of them at any table. For the main course we ordered the pork fried rice, vegetable chowmein with home made noodles and chicken in black bean sauce. The rice came out early and way before anything else at least 7 or 8 minutes or more before the chicken in black bean sauce and 5 minutes later the wings then a few minutes after that the chowmein. Nice thing was that when it did finally hit the table it was fresh from the wok and some of the hottest (stove hot) I've ever been served. Flavor wise it was all good. For me though the jury is still out on weather it was all worth the wait. In a city like San Francisco with all the seemingly 100's of Chinese restaurants I have had some great food so for me, I probably won't do the wait again but I will absolutely come back on an off time. I think next time I will also order some items that I normally wouldn't order just to try something new.

Go here, don't waste time elsewhere

Winner winner chicken dinner

By obsesscompletely |

Drove 20 minutes to try the chicken that was recommended by friends and was definitely worth it! Flavor was delicious with the perfect amount of crunch to it. Went when they were closing and the staff was nice enough to let us through. Definitely a winner in my books!

Constant busy and for a good reason

By pglejm |

The line never ends, constant flow of people in and out, diners and to go folks. Based on recommendations we ordered the shrimp and leek dumplings (sautéed and delicious) and the dry rub chicken wings (hot in temperature and spice, crispy cooked to perfection) and a Tsing Tao beer, much needed but their house tea was excellent as is their spicy kimchee. Not disappointed but slightly cold interior temperature, we will be back!

Classic Chinese

By BoiseHotelee |

There's something magical about San Tung. Its appearance makes you wonder if you've found the right place, but the food changes the landscape. Depending on how crowded it is, the service will waiver into questionable territory, but a late lunch may redefine that anxiety. Order the green beans, and of course, the much touted chicken wings, and then maybe a restaurant staple, a Kung Pao dish, and you'll leave happy.

Delicious wings!

By Julie R |

While visiting the city San Tung was highly recommended by a local friend. From the outside it doesn't look like anything special, but the food is amazing! We went late on a Sunday night and it was PACKED (apparently this is the norm). We were not disappointed with the Original Fried Wings that had great flavor and were very tender, as well as the Pork Pot Stickers. We will be back next time we visit SF!!

Best chicken wings ever!

The 'crack chicken' is all the rage (& the reason for the wait).

By SweetHopfrog |

Our friend took us here. We heard that there is always a long wait to get a table. That was no lie. It's a popular place in a non-descript building. We waited for 1.5 hours to be seated. The building is small (although they plan to expand to a building next door) so there really is no space to wait inside. Apparently, people are willing to wait because they crave the 'crack chicken'. this is essentially honey-dipped (?) chicken bits that are as addictive as drugs. They were very delicious. Also, the pan-fried dumplings are addictive. So, if you have several hours to dedicate to the adventure of dining, then you should go here.

You Cannot Go Wrong

By Herman W |

This is a go to place if you are craving Chinese food in San Francisco and don't want to do the Chinatown thing. San Tung has some great signature dishes like the dry fried chicken wings, fried rice, noodles with black bean sauce, steamed dumplings, and a few more. The serving portions are generous, prices are reasonable, and service is on par with other restaurants of this nature. You don't really go to these type of restaurants for the service. However, the service is friendly and efficient. The wait staff is actually working pretty hard at San Tung to get everyone their food and keep everyone happy! Expect to wait for a table, because they always seem to be busy. On the plus, they also take my favorite charge card - American Express! Yah!

Cause me diarrhea, not a fan of it at all

By Lulu W |

I always see lines outside so I decided to give a try, but it was ridiculous! The chicken wing and string beans were way too sweet, service was just so-so, and the worst thing was I had diarrhea right after the dinner! Luckily my friend brought me medicine and it stopped after 5 times of using the restroom. Gees, I will never go back to this place again.

Best chicken wings we've EVER had!

By Ramsey475 |

Chicken wings might not be the first thing you'd think of to order at a Chinese restaurant - but there were seriously the BEST chicken wings we've ever had. And we love chicken wings. They are called the "dry glazed wings" but they are not dry at all - they are covered in a sweet gingery sauce. So delicious. We went back a 2nd time!

Unorganized and extremely busy.

By MariaL |

Customers sign in on the dry erase board. When the guy calls your name, you better speak up or you will lose you table. A party of 6 that came after my party of 5 got seated first. We placed our order n the table that ordered after us got their food first. They did not bring our food at the same time. Each entree was brought to us 15 minutes apart. By the time all the food got delivered the first two entrees were already cold. The wonton soup was good. Everything else were just ok tasting.

Great Food & experience

By Luvorlando1 |

We visited because a friend who previously lived in the city told us not to miss it & he was so right. This friend hasn't been there for 5 years so we decided to play it by ear but when we saw the line out the door with locals we joined in. We got the wings & steamed pot stickers which were recommended and just loved bith. The city can be very expensive full of pricy foodie choices but this little gem provided us with an exotic trendy food experience without the pricetag- very cool

If you love Chinese...

By david c |

San Tung is out of the way for the typical tourist BUT if you love delish Chinese food, then this is the place to be! First off, the wait is long.... they have a wet board to write your name and # of people in your party. We arrive at 5pm on a Sunday, and I would say that the wait for 2 people was about 45 minutes. Now... if you are smart, you will write your name on San Tung 1 and San Tung 2 (right next door). You will just have to coordinate which restaurant calls your name first! Decor is so so, nothing to write home about. We had 3 items. 1. The leak and pork steamed dumplings (excellent). 2. The dry fried chicken wings (delish! Something to write home about!!!!) 3. The spicy black bean noodles (OMG sooo good!) The noodle portion was huge, but I still wanted MORE! Go here for comfort Chinese food. If you don't feel like waiting, call and order for pick up, I think I'm going to do that next time!!!

Best Chicken Wings Ever!

By Justin S |

The wait for dine in is really long, but after trying the chicken wings I can see why. We got our order to-go to avoid the line, but the food was just as delectable. The wings are by far the best I have ever had. I highly recommend visiting if you are in the area and want to chow down on some amazing food.

The dry-fried spicy, sweet chicken wings are to die for

By CoastalCruiser27 |

The dry-fried glazed chicken wings are spicy, sweet and addictive at this Inner Sunset, San Francisco no frills spot. There’s also a wide selection of noodle dishes to choose from and the portions are generous. Go with a group to share and sample a variety of dishes.

Good place

By iLya K |

Good Chinese restaurant. I liked their walnut shrimp and special fried chicken wings with crispy lightly sweetened batter. Waiters are very polite and prompt. I give it 4 stars instead of 5 because it is very noisy, drafty and crowded.

BEST!

By tattersall_12 |

This was the best Chinese Restaurant! We had the wings, chicken fried rice, and chicken noodle soup all which were so delicious and plentiful! We had to wait a bit for a table and our server but it was so worth it! The prices are reasonable too. This place was super busy for a Monday evening but I am going back again and again and again!

Killer Fried Chicken in Spicy Sticky Sauce

By chanyu1 |

This place makes the best fried chicken in a spicy, sticky sauce! It is so good that diners will line up for a table way before this restaurant opens for dinner at 5 p.m. We arrived at 4:30 and there's already a line half a block long. If you don't mind waiting, go for it as this place has the best Chinese fried chicken around. Complement this with their steamed shrimp dumpling and you got a wonderful meal. This place is so popular even take outs require at least half an hour (sometimes up to an hour) wait. Tip: call the restaurant about 15 minutes before they open and order your takeout and most likely, you could pick up shortly after they open. Definitely worth a try if you're patient and can spare the time!

Chinese Fusion Food

By travelbugsme |

Tiny little shop along the street, with super pack crowd standing around its exit. Parking is a challenge. And do rem to lock down your name with their "receptionist" else gonna be a long wait for a table. Served Chinese mix Korean style dishes. Dishes like chicken wings, dry noodle, fried rice are all decent portion and can be found in here, and quite tasty in actual fact. Would also recommend their stir fried greens as well. Check it out, worth to give a try as it wouldn't poke a big hole in your pocket.

Yes, the wings are good but ...

By Edward L |

Like some other reviewers, I'm not sure why this place gets raves. The food seems good, served fairly fast and the service is better than most Chinese places. Their chicken wings are worth a try, at least once but it gets busy, crowded, and noisy almost as soon as they open their doors. The dried string beans are good as well. We tried them both, along with the shrimp and leek dumplings and black bean noodles. I think the black bean noodles must be an acquired taste as I found the color and texture to take some getting used to -- the dumplings were decent. Prices are high for what you get. My only observation is that many of the dishes seem to lack the more complex seasoning and flavorings you can get in other good Chinese places. They seem to have a lot of sweet or sugar in their preps. The place is fairly clean

Holy Smokes the Wings are Good!!!

By aspataro |

So I was in the area for work and my brother and I wanted Chinese food. We went on TripAdvisor and found this place with good reviews. I was surprised everyone was hyping up the wings so we went. All I can say is "WOW!" Best wings I've ever had and I love wings. I've been here about 4 more times since my first and I about the wings are still good. Other notable facts: the green beans are just as good, as so is the hot n sour soup but the rest of the menu is okay... I've actually had better Chinese food. Also, place is always packed so expect to wait 30 minutes to eat. Final advice: Go here for the wings, beans, and soup nothing more.

The wings...

By John H |

"Crack wings" is what we call it. Get the dry wings here, you won't regret it. It's a little messy and has plenty of garlic so you probably won't want to kiss anyone afterwards, but its worth it. Place can be packed during peak hours, so sometimes we get it to-go and just eat it outside because we can't wait. It's SF so eating on the sidewalk is fine haha. There's only street parking, so that kind of sucks.

Very delish!

By Stephanie B |

First timer here! We didn’t realize when you entered you had to write your name on a whiteboard for the waitlist (make sure to do this if people are waiting!) We had the Dried Fried Chicken and Black Bean Noddle. Both were so amazing. We showed up around 12:30 on a Friday and our wait was very short (15-20 mins). It’s really good and worth any wait! Hope you enjoy!

Great experience

By 2wholuvtotravel |

We went here with some family from the area. I would have not even know it was there, however, it was very popular among the locals! The service was quick and okay...not the best. The food was fantastic! We sampled many different items: green beans, chicken wings, eggplant, chicken and garlic...everything was top notch and very affordable! Worth a trip.

Very less qty.

By Sneha M |

They cheat u on qty especially when u do a to go or order to pick up..so make sure u get the correct amount for what u paid.

The WINGS!!!

By Ron M |

By far the BEST thing to get is the dry fried chicken wings. Other things on the menu are good, but nothing is anywhere near as good as the dry fried chicken wings.

Good take-out

By MrPickwick |

Needed take-out chinese food and this was nearby and recommended by locals (daughter). All kinds of great food. Kitchen was cleaner than anything I have ever seen, and open for view to see your food prepared.

Good Food. Terrible Service.

By Gaakin |

FOOD: The food here is pretty tasty. We particularly enjoyed the dumplings, the chicken wings, and the chilled noodle with peanut sauce. SERVICE: The wait staff here is egregiously rude, even by SF Chinese restaurant standards. PRICE: Our bill averaged out to $18 per person.

Great chicken wings

By Vacation47919365581 |

Food is great. Service not so great but worth it because they have the best chicken I have ever tried.

Chicken wings!

By Randy G |

The dry fried chicken wings are delicious and a must try. We had the garlic eggplant too that was like butter. Also an order of potstickers which were good but not exceptional. Our previous visit we had the pork dumplings which we liked better. The atmosphere is busy, hustle bustle, and friendly, and is frequented a lot by locals. This time we stopped in before 6 PM and beat the rush, but there was a line of people waiting by the time we got in. They do a big takeout business too. This was our second time to dine at this restaurant. We stopped in while passing through on our way to Sonoma.

good chinese food l& recommended by locals

By easyrider_1234 |

we went here based on local intel so it had to live up to high expectations. for some reason they close from 3pm to 5pm on Sunday so at 4:45 there was a big line trying to get it. we ordered a ton of food, waiters were excellent...food ranged from average to great but was overall a 4 star meal. I would definitely recommend and will go back when in san fran again.

food not any special, not deserve this long waiting

By KathQuinL |

Its the most famous chinese restaurant in sf bay area. Maybe i had expected too much, thats why i felt upset at last. The dumplings are normal, even too thick. And the chicken wings are too dry, too dry that makes it tasteless. It's nothing of SHANDONG. The boss is not even born or grow up in SHANDONG. He was from Korean. Really upset. Not deserve any authentic expecting. By the way, the staff are not polite at all.

Wings

By sfsurfcaster |

Checked out the infamous San Tung dried fried wings. Not sure how good their wings (full order of 12 wings $12.50) would be , ordered their lunch special wings (six wings), rice and soup $7.50. Could've just a tad spicier to add just a bit of bite. Overall good.

Good eats in Inner Sunset

By Katie L |

San Tung has been around for years and attracted a following of patrons wanting authentic dumplings and handpulled noodles. My favorite dishes are dried fried chicken wings and the crispy potstickers. The atmosphere is more on the plain side, but the food is moderately priced and good. There's always a wait so go there early or make reservations if you have a large party.

mediocre & perplexing

By JDZatSF |

I've been to San Tung 3 times, but I won't get duped by positive reviews or lines out the door again and won't return. We had to write our name on the board, wait for a bit, and for what? Seriously, what are people raving about and waiting for?!? Has the cult of San Tung brainwashed that many people? The look, feel, service (indifferent), and food (meh) are mediocre at best. especially in SF, where there is *much* better food in lots of places, even some nearby ones. Noodle dishes have been OK here, pot stickers large but not great, tofu with bean threads funny tasting and I didn't even take home the leftovers (when the food is really good somewhere, there's less likely to be leftovers, but if there are, I would most certainly snatch it and savor it the next day). The free little plate of spicy kim chee was the best part of the meal by far! I don't get it, but at least I won't get it again.

Best dry fried wings ever!

By romyntheigorot |

They are known for their dry fried wings and they are delicious. Every table in the restaurant will have at least one plate. Their other food is pretty good too, I always get the black bean noodles. Don't expect top notch service because this place is so busy that the waiters, busters and everyone is basically going at high speed. It's better that you are ready with your order as soon as possible. Food comes out at a reasonable time, not long at all. Also, if you are going around dinner time especially on the weekends, it can be a long wait to get seated. I recommend getting there 30 minutes before they open or if you get there by the time that they open and there's a line then you should be able to get a seat. It may look long just because they didn't open yet. Also make sure your whole party is there otherwise you will be waiting. They take credit cards and you can also do take out or call and do pick up.

Best meal we had in San Fran

By Kelsey F |

Omg, this place is AMAZING. We had heard about their chicken wings and green beans and had to try them. Let me just tell you, you will be addicted. These were the best chicken wings and green beans we have ever had! I will be dreaming about this place for the rest of my life. Seriously, you NEED to try this place, it would be a big mistake not to. Just be warned, they are very fast paced in this restaurant so you may feel a little rushed but the food is so worth it. The pork dumplings are very good as well. I wish I could take this restaurant back to Seattle with me.. le sigh.

The best

By bhons21 |

You know you're at a good Chinese restaurant is there are mostly Chinese people there. The food was fantastic, the space was unappealing, and it was located slightly off the beaten path of Chinatown. Not a tourist trap. Good food and good prices.

Good Chinese food

By zapata80 |

I just moved from downtown to the Sunset area and found this Chinese restaurant on Irving st. The restaurant is always full every time I pass by so finally decided to give it a try. The food is actually decent and I can see why the dried chicken is people's favorite. I personally love it even though my wife thinks it's a tad too sweet. Pot stickers are not that great in my opinion, wonton soup is decent and the rest is actually pretty good as well. Menu is pretty large so I would like to come back to try other stuff. Recommended 😁.

HORRIBLE service

By John L |

The restaurant is very busy and upon entering you put your names on a white board. Wait is not long which it seems that the kitchen can keep up with all the customers coming and leaving. Waiter very prompt, tea and water is served immediately. That was the best part of the experience; one hour later still waiting for the famous fried chicken, tasteless Mongolian beef and overcooked pot stickers. No apologies, nothing at all! Too many options in San Francisco to waste your time at this establishment. The best part is you still have to wait another 15 minutes for your bill.

The Best Chicken Wings!

By TravelingG8TR |

We had the most amazing dry fried chicken wings. I would literally fly back to San Francisco to have them. Been craving them ever since we ate here! Service was quick and efficient. Would come back without a doubt!

Amazing Dimsums!!

By Nikhil V |

San Tung is a tough place to find due to its weird location but the quality of food is amazing. Me and my friends were very impressed with the food. We also ate alot of dimsums which was the highlight of my food experience I was impressed with its ambience because of interiors and proper sitting arrangement. Its a very good place to go in terms of dimsums but I think they could do better with other parts of their menu.

Long wait, unworthy place

By quangfremont |

Had to wait nearly an hour but the fried chicken there is so ordinary. The black bean noodle is good though. Wouldn’t wait this long for this place next time though.

OK Restaurant

By Anna L |

The food quality has declined especially on their famous dry fried chicken wings. The pot stickers were burnt on my most recent visit. Definitely no longer worth the long wait.

Good lunch

By RickandJan |

My daughter loves this place and took me here after visiting Golden Gate Park. We ordered two of her favorites, chicken wings and mushu pork which were great. We also got the lunch special order of Happy Family which was average.

Black noodles

By Anne N |

Went for a late lunch, around 2:30, but still had to sign up on the white board because no tables were available. It was around a 10-minute wait, so it wasn't bad at all. We had a quick look at the menu and ordered #6, the black beans noodles (dry) and the fried chicken wings (dry also) #72. We thought the wings (which came with a sauce) was wrong, but the waiter said it was the "dry", #72. It was very good, slightly sweet, but still crispy. The noodles must've been hand pulled because they were the longest noodles I've ever seen! Delicious! The free little dish of Kim-chee was a bonus. It was $10.50 for each dish, but it was well worth it. Next time, even though the wings were good, I'd ask that NO sauce be added to the wings.

The wings are the greatest of all-time!

By Warren G |

I come here for the wings all the time. They are the best in the city and nothing can top them! It does get busy all the time and waiters are a little aggressive if you are in their way but that's because a million people are ordering at a time.

Fried Dry Chicken Love

By theloxmyth |

Think of General Tso's chicken with double the goodness and you have Dry Fried love. The dumplings, eggrolls and garlic eggplant is wonderful too, but the Dry Fried Chicken takes the fortune cookie! Do not hesitate to visit 1031 Irvine Street for deliciousness : )

Authentic Chinese food

By Jovs |

Very tasty dimsum! One of the best I have tasted! Reasonable rates, varied selection. Fast service. Be ready to wait during peak times.

Great Place for Lunch!!

By Kayla C |

My family took me out for lunch here while I was out visiting. The chicken wings were delicious! Definitely plan to come back next time I’m in San Francisco.
