Lovely sushi

By Andreas V |

The menu is sumptuous, although I "only" had the sushi lover's plate. They also have plenty of sake and Japanese beer for authentic drinking. The grilled squid, which I didn't have, looked so good that I wish I had ordered it.

Tasty sushi sashmi, great service

By beachbummer75 |

the service was fast, efficient and attentive. I ordered the sushi and sashmi set, at $35, thinking it was just 6 pieces each but i had twice the sushi instead. all were tasty just the portions were huge! Overall a good joint for Japanese food but need to come early as it fills up fast.

Delicious sushi, intimate atmosphere

By Travelling_Hunger |

Best sushi I've had in San Francisco, freshly prepared just a few metres away from your table. Great intimate atmosphere and generous portions.

Decent Japanese food

By Sharmistha Ghosh Das |

We went for a dinner with a colleague and focused on having light food while drinking and talking. So we focused on the Sapporo beer which is difficult to get otherwise in SF. We started with a traditional Miso soup and followed it up with the Sushi lover platter and Poppo Yaki (grilled squid). The sushi was fresh and tasty. The squid was chewy, probably a bit over cooked than needed. Service was more of SF vintage than Japanese vintage. Overall, okay for a one time visit.

Love the sushi and sashimi

By Artep1969 |

Nice restaurant, good professional service and great Sushi. We shared the sushi & sashimi platter which comes with a salad and miso soup. The soup was lovely, much better than we tasted in The Netherlands. We also had the Futomaki and the Sanraku Special roll. All sushi and sashima was freshly made and tasted fantastic. Adding 2 glasses of wine and we had a great dinner.

Excellent quality food, but service was sparce

By jcliffeg |

We were lucky to get in without a reservation for 4 people after waiting 15 min. However, they had trouble servicing all the customers in a timely manner. The food quality was amazing even though they were busy. We had to wait for 10 min for our check at the end of the meal though. I would go back at a less busy time.

Eating dinner near Union Square

By Beth D |

The service is very good but more importantly the food is fresh and tasty. Reasonably priced. Our family liked it so much we ate there 2 nights in a row.

Disappointed

By Joseph M |

Sushi was flavorless and boring including their signature roll. There are much better places to go around

A great local sushi restaurant!

By D i |

Was just here last week again as I wanted to take our son who now lives a block away that had never eaten here. We both thought it reminded us of those very small restaurants in Japan where we spent a couple weeks, where most restaurants are incredibly small by western standards, tables are close together, with a small size. sushi counter and very, very clean. Our services was excellent, as it was earlier in the evening and no line out the door. Very affordable for SF prices and the sashimi was excellent as were the rolls my son ordered. Came with a cup of rice, I had the miso soup and we had Japanese beer! As we've traveled to over 18 countries, living and working in the Middle East, we do work to learn a small bit of the local languages of that country which we believe goes a long way especially when in restaurants, shops etc.

Always Great Service and food!

By Matthew J |

I have eaten here a few times. The service is fantastic and the food is great. Always a go to for me as it is close to work but also for the service. Lisa is awesome when we go in. Very friendly and fantastic hospitality!

Rushed service-average food

By Beth K |

This place came highly recommended by our hotel---but the food was stunningly average. We got combos--ok Miso soup, the standard Japanese salad with ginger dressing, very good tempura, and average entrees. We also tried their house-brewed green iced tea which tasted like swamp water to me. But the most distressing part was the service. The soup and salad were delivered immediately--ok, fine. A minute later our tempura came. It was piping hot, so I started in on it because I didn't want it to get cold. A minute after that, our entrees came. We had too many dishes on the small table and no way to enjoy any of them. We really felt like they were concerned about the table flip. The tempura was good, but the entrees were like anything we could find in a strip mall---not what we expected from the buildup we had from our hotel. To be fair---maybe we should have had the sushi---it looked beautiful and maybe that is the specialty of the house.

Stopped in for a quick bite

By ericamann2017 |

My son and I were famished and we wanted a few rolls as a snack. My son found Sanraku and they did not disappoint. We ordered 2 rolls and they were delivered promptly and they were delicious.

Delicious

By Tommy |

The food was delicious. The restaurant was clean and bright. The service was outstanding. The price was very competitive ($65 for family of 3).

Sushi Dinner

By Angel_Travel_Bug |

The fish is fresh and delectable, we tried many different local and Japanese sashimi which was incredible. We sat at the sushi bar and the chefs were attentive. We have been here previously and we had to come back once we returned to the city because it was so impressionable on us. A must try if in the area.

Great spot for sushi sashimi and other Japanese specialties

By J Scott A |

We love this place. It is convenient to Union Square and great shopping and visiting. The food is terrific and the servers are very helpful. You can’t go wrong for lunch or dinner

Got my sushi fix

By azzklaun |

Excellent food and quick service - our food were serve in a timely manner even for a party of 8. Price is reasonable and a definite must try.

Great food

By Jurgen B |

The food was excellent and very diverse. Service efficient and friendly but a bit cold like often with Japanese servers. Which we don't mind

Fresh and genuine

By WightLight |

Always try to stop here to get my dose or genuine Japanese sushi ..and especially Uni. The prices are fair and the quality is amazing

Amazingly good Japanese food with fair prices

By WightLight |

What a Gem. This is genuine Japanese food, you can get here the REAL stuff, imported directly from Japan. The quality is very good and the food is amazing. What more, pricing is very fair.

Insanely great!

By Patrickwal |

Exceptional sushi. We were in San Franciso for 3 days and ate here 2 of the 3 nights. Specialty rolls were amazing, as was all nigiri sushi (especially unagi and hamachi) tempura was amazing, everything was awesome. Best sushi we'd had since Tokyo pre-COVID. HIGHLY recommended.

So fresh! Absolute best.

By 33simpson |

Seasonal specials featuring fresh ingredients were terrific. Extensive sake menu. Even the soba was the best we've had. Outstanding!

No Thanks!!!!!!

By VALE83mb |

They’re completely unprepared for their own menu. The waiter didn’t know which kind of their food conteins gluten, after 20 minutes he told me I can eat just three kind of sushi rolls. My boyfriend ordered a Teryaki Salmon, but he ate only salmon, because the sauce was so little that the name of the dish he ordered should be change. Avoid this place.

Very good sushi and tempura

By Gabe H |

Nice "hole in the wall" Sushi place. Good service, good quality, reasonable prices. Tempura, grilled salmon, and sushi were all good

Take out treasure

By REDRENSINK |

I like any restaurant that is loaded with locals. It bodes well for the quality and service in my book. We ordered a number of rolls to bring back to the hotel and have a quiet night after a lot of walking. Great tasting, fully fresh sushi. And the service was fantastic with a reasonable price.

Excellent sushi

By LHS329 |

We had excellent sushi at Sanraku. I had a spider roll and a dynamite roll. My husband had the chef's pick which was an assortment of sashimi. Absolutely no complaints about freshness or flavors. They were very strict with covid protocols, which we appreciated. Vaccination card and ID are carefully checked and you have to stay masked when not eating. Good job!!

Best Authentic Sushi in SF

By Blake S |

I've eaten at Sanraku on business trips for years. It's my favorite sushi in San Fran. This passed week my wife and a few of our children were in San Fran and decided to eat at Sanraku. Once again, DELICIOUS!!

Great sushi, kids friendly

By Mcigagna |

We recently had dinner here, on New Years week. They were crowded but accommodated us without a reservation. The menu is really diverse and had a few good gourmet surprises. And they also accommodate the requests of a 8 year old child !! Try the sushi and sashimi specials, where the chef chooses the best of the night (or day). The seasonal sake selection is also very unique and if you are into it, it’s really delightful. Highly recommended !

Delicious! A pleasant surprise

By Lynn C |

Outstanding dinner My husband had sushi and I had sesame chicken wi th brown rice. Outstanding meal and a good value. Easy walk from our hotel.

Great Sushi

By Keenan Z |

Some of the best sushi I have eaten. It was priced about what you would expect in the area.. I highly recommend.

Authentic Japanese Style Sushi

By marcU4721ID |

A proper sushi counter with a phenomenally large choice of products prepared in an authentic way. Very fresh, very tasty! Even the warm kitchen shines....(I had a grilled hamachi neck). Very satisfying experience!

Crowded. Good overall.

By Lorenzo S |

We had to wait some time to be seated and had to eat at the “sushi bar”. No big deal but consider making a reservation. The service was effective and fast, if not the kindest. Cannot complain on this. The beef noodles were not super tasty and I would not recommend them. The udon (rice and meat) was really good. The price is okay for the udon but probably a bit too high for the noodles imo.

Excellent Japanese food

By WorldTraveller1313 |

I ate here recently on a weekday evening. There's a wide range of Japanese dishes on the menu, including sushi and sashimi. Prices are reasonable, and service is friendly and efficient even though the restaurant was very busy.

Great restaurant

By Richard S |

Stopped for lunch on recommendations of hotel. Not disappointed. Excellent tempura. Miso soup was best I’ve had. Sesame chicken chrispy but not chewy. Highly recommend

Local fave for excellent quality sushi and more

By dkp213 |

A local favorite, we were referred here by the concierge at our hotel. Small, super causal sushi place that has other dining options for the non-sushi lovers. My husband had the dynamite roll and the dragon roll and both were excellent. Fresh, tasty and perfectly prepared and presented. I had the miso soup and chicken teriyaki which was also excellent. I heard excellent things about the spicy sesame chicken, which I'll try next time we're there. Excellent wine, beer and cocktails for a small place.

Probably not my first choice

By Agustin D |

I’m not a sushi expert, and while the price is not extremely high it isn’t cheap either. The staff were nice and helpful, we called an hour in advance and manage to make an early reservation. Other reviews mention that it was child friendly, and the truth is that the staff are nice but there is no kids menu and the place is quite tight, so if you have a toddler like we do, this probably shouldn’t be option number one. They do have full sushi and other Asian plates, so there’s a bit for everyone.

DONT COME HERE

By Jennifer J |

Service was so bad. The sushi was so thin, and disgusting! Don’t come here. Go to little sushi Bar!!

Nice meal. Busy restaurant.

By Tracy K |

We booked last minute for this recommended restaurant, and we were glad we did as it was very busy and people were queuing. The Hawaiian Poke (special) and the California rolls were delicious. The sesame chicken was nice, but not exceptional. We felt a little under pressure to leave at the end - the bill was put down as the plates were cleared. We weren’t asked if we wanted another drink. So, possibly not for you if you want to linger. But it was Saturday night and they were busy.

Variable experiencr

By DaphneLkwd |

Four in our party had varying experiences. Sushi was excellent, but had less success with teriyaki chicken which was very tough. While they advertise gluten-free options, they are in fact very limited as most things (including the salad dressing) use soy sauce. Also, food didn't all come out together, & the two who didn't wish to eat with chopsticks had to get up & chase down the server to get utensils.

Expensive poor quality food!

By Barbie120 |

Disappointed with the quality of the food at this restaurant! Pure and simple! Do not waste your money like we did! Our family ordered (3) main entrees: Beef Udon, Donburi Grilled Chicken Teriyaki Rice Bowl, Vegetarian Tofu and also (1)California Roll, and 3 beers and our bill was $110 without tip! Expensive for poor quality food! Big mistake! The beef in the Udon tasted old and looked disgusting! The Grilled Chicken Teriyaki in the rice bowl was tough to chew and the teriyaki appeared to be slapped on at the last minute. Also the tofu dish was gooey and inedible. The California Roll was just ok.. Foodie community beware! Location is sketchy too! Skip this restaurant if you want delicious authentic Japanese food!

Great sushi

By RenatodiCaprio |

Just very simple but very good sushi/food. Serious. In many cases better than in some of the best. Again, it is very simple. Soy sauce in sachets. But who cares. As long as the food is great.

Luncheon Special $12.50 plus more

By Titanium85 |

After an enthusiastic “Irasshaimase!" (an honoriffic expression in Japanese welcoming someone usually into a place of business) greeting from the staff when I walked in, I was immediately seated at the bar. It was about noon. I noticed only a small group of customers. When time got closer to 1300, more and more diners arrived. I ordered the lunch special of shrimp tempura (which comes with miso soup, fresh salad with house vinaigrette, hiyashi wakame, steamed rice & fruit slices). I opted the addition of gyoza and California roll. I was thinking about ordering extra shrimp tempura, but it’s $3 each .... too expensive Instead, I elected a small order of sashimi $18 (7 pieces) which was fresh and delicious. My tempura meal was crunchy; presentation was outstanding. Diners are given complimentary and unlimited cups of ocha (green tea). 今日、私はどこで昼食を取るべきか不明でした。幸いにも、私はこの大都市の真ん中にあるこの趣のあるレストランを発見しました。私は私の決定に非常に満足しています。私は完全な胃で私の食事の後にレストランを出ました。 Translation: Today, I was uncertain where to have lunch. Fortunately, I discovered this quaint restaurant in the middle of this large city. I am very happy with my decision. I left the restaurant after my meal with a full stomach. Thank you for this great experience; I look forward to my next visit.

Martha’s Bday weekend

Magnificent! Vincent surprised us with 2 outrageous rolls!! Trio and 704 rolls!! Also we had a sashimi platter with smoked barracuda!! Melts at touch!! Very pleased for an unexpected visit! Tks TripAdvisor!!

Tasty food. Better to eat at restaurant and not for carry out

By KS |

We had lunch here on a Saturday afternoon. It was very busy and we waited nearly 20 minutes to get a table as the seating area is small. The food was delicious although portions were awkward. Both the Sesame chicken and Chicken terriyaki were prepared very well and were flavorful. The plates came with a large floret of broccoli, 1/4 potato, and large carrot and difficult to manage with chopsticks and we are quite skilled eating with chopsticks. Luckily, we took our remaining food to go and were able to tackle this with more decorum in the privacy of our own home. It would have been very awkward at the dining table in a restaurant. We have also tried just to order for carryout. Both times, the service was very stoic/unfriendly/impersonal. The carryout food did not travel well. Would suggest eating in at the restaurant.

Great Sushi

By pirategeorge1 |

I ordered the sushi & sashimi platter which was great. The sushi was fresh and the California roll was absolutely outstanding.

Consistently Good Experience

By wyatt s |

There is often a wait line for Sanraku - a popular sushi eatery for locals. We've eaten here three times and it's consistently good. I would summarize our experiences as, no complaints but also nothing to brag about. The service is good, the presentation is good, the food quality is good - everything is good, it's just not a home-run. If the price was a tad lower it would be an awesome place for the price, perhaps this is why I'm lukewarm on my review.

Not as good as other visitors experienced

By Frank N |

We didn't book, so it's our fault at the first place but they still managed to offer us a table and requested one hour to finish and we were ok with it because we were always quick to finish our meal. I think they are more specialized on sushi because our hot dishes were really average especially my order of salmon was overlooked and very dry and tough to chew. For a restaurant with this reputation should not take care of food so lightly even they want to serve more customers with little time to concentrate on cooking. I can not fault their service but food quality is the number one priority for a restaurant and I didn't get that impression.

Excellent japanese reastaurant

By harri l |

Good place to go and eat. Excellent service and food. Menu is comprehensive. Nice atmosphere. Fast service. Tasty food and sake, beer and wines.

Just OK

By Diana M |

Based on this restaurant's ratings I had high expectations. Food was good, not great. Service was BAD. We were clearly forgotten about as 15 min after someone took our order someone else came over and asked if we were ready to order. Tables around us received their dinners before we got our soup and then were told "he must have forgot". Not what I expected for an expensive restaurant. My sushi place in PA is much better than here.

Great food

By Clo30IOW |

Lovely food, a couple of the staff were not as friendly as they could've been. The service was really fast, so if you're looking for a relaxed evening it's not ideal, but good food with quick service, perfect!

Best rainbow roll I’ve ever had

By Jen G |

Visited on strength of other reviews, and ordered some rolls, nigiri, and appetizers. The salmon collar- a special- was outstanding, and the rainbow roll was spectacular. Everything else was very good too, service attentive, and a nice buzz- from locals and visitors, a full house on a Monday night. Will be back!

Patience meeded

By Terri Y |

We had a delay crossing the Bay Bridge and so we decided to eat dinner before heading hime to Sacramento. We found Sanraku to close by and with good reviews. This restaurant only accepts credit cards. Most Japanese restaurants you enter, you are immediately greeted. Here, we weren’t. The tables are spaced close together without enough space to maneuver between. The waitstaff was not friendly or engaging. The dining area was packed, all tables were occupied. The menu is QR code for smart phone use, but we saw a table receive actual menus. The food was decent. It was hot when served. Prices were more expensive than we were used to, but we were in San Francisco. If you live in the neighborhood you walk to pick up dinner without having to hassle with finding a place to park. Not a restaurant that I would eat at again due to the waitstaff, difficulty parking, and the crowded seating. Food to go, maybe.

Excellent Japanese Food and Sake Highly Recommended.

By Robert T |

Went to the restaurant with two Japanese visiting from Japan. They said restaurant was rated Number #1 in Japan. The food was excellent. Sushi was made by Japanese chefs on premises. Mackerel was flown in from Japan and served whole or sushi style. The Japanese ordered a bottle $95.00 sake to have with the meal. The restaurant was located on a narrow street with limited parking. The restaurant was small considering it's exceptional food. It was very busy and many locals ate there.

Wow!

By Cynthia N |

Do not rely on appearances when entering this modestly decorated restaurant. The service is excellent and the dishes are delicious. The portions are also very generous.

Awesome Japanese food!

By DrTM8 |

We liked the venue, the staff was courteous, the food was delicious and plentiful, it was speedy to reach our table. We recommend it! And either go early or make reservations, the restaurant is always packed! It is also opened for lunch.

Terrible Service

By qakm |

We, Japanese family visited Sanraku on Sutter st. to see the taste of the US sushi. We enjoyed various sushi rolls with the names of various US cities, but, the service was TERRIBLE. An Asian women (seemingly non-Japanese by her pronounciation) who served us hasted us to order, saying thay were busy with an angry face. She also spilt the water on the table everytime she poured the glass, and hit my chair when she walk behind me. Other guys were polite but rather looked shy. Ther served us interchangingly and looked nobody really cares about us. That woman was totally unforgivable, but also this restaurant seemed lacking the management of their employees, or the hospitality itself.

Delish!

By Nina T |

We had a wonderful dinner here, a wonderful mixture of sushi, sashimi, meats and vegetarian options. All perfectly served and very fresh. Plus the red miso soup is fantastic.

Fresh delicious sushi

By Ula G |

Quick service, fresh sushi, delicious teriyaki chicken salad and soup. Loved this place !! We will come back for sure.

Excellent Sushi

By upperwestsider72 |

The restaurant is very conveniently located near Union Square. The sushi is fresh and varied. I've read complaints about the service but found it to be prompt

Diner

By Sylvaine |

Excellent diner. Great service, good recommendations! Clean kitchen and dining area. Combination dinner is a very good deal !!!! Delightful vegetable tempura (very lightly battered selection tender veggies: sweet potato, carrot, eggplant, mushroom, cauliflower, broccoli and giant bean.) Also ordered signature roll (spicy Trio Roll) and fatty Tuna with quail egg, equally amazing! Best restaurant yet, we will come back.

Very good food but service too fast!

By lilou6812 |

We ate very well but the service is much too fast! In 45 minutes we already had the bill on the table, for a Friday night.

Very busy and noisy

By Joseph |

Strategically located near union square Very busy and noisy venue Average food quality Average service quality

High quality food, good service, unpretentious

By AndyTheGameInventor |

We were a group of 6 whose experience with Japanese food ranged from "I like Sushi" to "I speak Japanese" to "I lived in Japan" and everyone enjoyed their meals. The rolls were a cut above most places, but they also had a few dishes that are more common in Japan than here. Prices in line with quality. A fairly small restaurant, simple decor. excellent food.

Good restaurant with wide choice of Sushi and other Japanese dishes

By AnGr2013 |

We had dinner here. I liked that they not only offer sushi, which was good, but also a variety of other Japanese dishes which we all enjoyed. Also a good choice of beers and sake. Reasonably priced.

Good lunch

By Robert S |

Good sushi, good steak Teriyaki. Service was as it should. Quick, easy, good lunch. I would go back. It may not be the very best sushi but really good for the price.

Yummy Lunch

By Gemma |

We popped by here for a quick and easy lunch after visiting the MOMA - we had a great lunch, very generous servings. I loved the sushi poke bowl and the miso was magical. Great service too.

Very authentic japanese food

By tracytsyd |

What a great find. A bustling small, authentic Japanese restaurant. Food was excellent, service good.

Good sushi (but not great)

By Adam-Rye-UK |

Visited Sanraku for lunch. It was a perfectly good lunch but nothing stood out as especially good. Service was fine and the prices were fair.

Hankering for sushi

By Marsha O |

After a conference at the Marriott marquis we found sanraku on TripAdvisor. It was a wonderful experience. We ate chefs recommendation and a nice spinach appetizer. Very nice

Quality Sushi in Downtown!

By Joe DiRoma |

The bluefin tuna belly nigiri was incredible! Service was on time and hospitable. My wife loved her miso soup and salad and all of her rolls. We would dine again whenever in San Francisco!

Delicious Sushi and perfect soft shell crab.

By Danny Ace |

Excellent restaurant, fresh sushi and outstanding rolls. The deep fried soft shell crab is delicious.

Great!

By Lisa |

The food was awesome, had the california rolls and soup and salad came with it, plus I had the teriyaki salmon. Everything was very tasty, would highly recommend!

Best Sushi Around

By medsalesguy |

This place has a humble appearance, but offers world-class and inventive sushi, sashimi, rolls and hot Japanese dishes. Prices are very reasonable for San Fran, as well. Toro and Salmon belly sashimi melts in your mouth. For an unusual special roll try the 3 spice roll that has wasabi pickles paired with soy aged tuna.

Sensational.

By Cristian V |

Beautiful, fresh and thoughtful dishes. Great atmosphere and service. Can’t be faulted. The chefs are preparing your meal right in front of you and it’s an artful skill.

Very nice Japanese restaurant

By Clevlander |

Very nice Japanese restaurant on Sutter Street. We were here for lunch on a Monday and ordered several options of sushi which were all excellently prepared with high-quality ingredients and perfectly balanced. We had the tuna nigiri, spider roll, spicy salmon all of which were very well prepared. Unfortunately the service leaves a lot to be desired. There were at least 10 tables open and yet we waited 20 minutes for our table. Once we were seated the waiter didn’t have any patience to take our orders, and was unwilling to answer any questions. He was annoyed and just wanted us to place the order and get out. I wish management did a little bit of customer service with the staff which will go along way considering the quality food that they serve.

Lunch Stop

By BQTraveler |

We did a quick search of TripAdvisor ranked sushi spots within walking distance. Sanraku unfortunately was a disappointment from what the reviews promised. We order 5 rolls for our group and none of them were very impressive. They were well presented but the fish did not taste very good. I was also not very impressed by their limited offering of rolls.

Another great expierence

By Roger J |

If you want great seafood JAPANESE style this is the place to go. Great experience , was on my own so sat at bar and watched sashimi and sushi being prepared. Very popular with It's of people in it. Is was a repeat visit for me from last trip, lived up to same standard

We were a party of six and everything was absolutely perfect. Sushi, rice pot with eel, noodle soup. Great service and location as well.

Sushi, Sashimi and Sake!

By TravelGal9876 |

Sanraku is probably one of the best overall sushi places I've ever been to. We went there on a Wednesday night for dinner and it was already very busy. We waited for about 15-20 minutes for a table as we didn't have a reservation, but the food was definitely worth the wait. I was so happy when we saw Onikoroshi sake on the menu (this is my ultimate favorite Sake and I've had many, many different kinds before), so we ordered a glass each of this. For our food we ordered three kinds of sashimi: Chu Toro (fatty blue fin tuna), Hamachi Toro (yellowtail belly), and Hon Maguro (blue fin tuna). The sashimi was especially fresh and delicious, especially the Chu Toro which felt like it was melting in my mouth. We also ordered a couple of rolls, the spicy trio roll and volcano roll. For those of you that have seen my other sushi restaurant reviews, you'll know that I love very spicy rolls. Both rolls were phenomenal in taste, although the roll itself was a little small in diameter (probably about 3/4 of an inch instead of the 1 inch that I am used to). The Spicy Trio roll was my favorite between the two, with blue fin tuna as the fish, and in the roll itself was cucumber, avocado, and wasabi pickles, topped with jalapenos. The flavors really mixed well together and the jalapenos and tobiko sauce just made the roll perfectly spicy! Definitely would go back to this place again. I highly recommend making reservations as this place gets really busy.

Very good sashimi

By WW_Traveller_1965 |

This is quite a small place always crowded. Food is excellent quality. Sashimi and tempura really delicious. Staff a bit rude....to be improved.

Tremendous!

By Vincent F |

Delicious meal, of great finesse, and waitresses always attentive. Very pleasant decor, and we see the cooks preparing sushi and makis.

Excellent every time

By Tracy B |

We've been going here since 2001 and highly recommend this little slice of sushi heaven. Generally, we order from the daily specials and are always pleased w the quality of the fish. Great service.

Amazing sushi restaurant

By Alexandru Zaharia |

The fiod was great! Recommend the house hot sake. We had udon and the delux sushi, both were great. The staff was friendly and helpful.

Excellent sushi

By __ R 0 M @ I N __ |

We visited this restaurant with a Japanese friend 4 years ago in 2015. Then went back on March 2019 and nothing changed! Excellent sushi, quick service and ultra fresh ingredients. We definitely recommend the Sushi’s lover plate which is a great dish with 6 different sushi and 1 Californian roll.

Fantastic food and atmosphere

By DJH |

We ate here for two nights out of 4 in SF as we so enjoyed the first time. Booking is recommended as it gets very busy. Great menu with lots of choice. Love the food!

Great sushi and sake in casual setting

By PVPTraveler |

Try the Oka sake to start, delish, and Onikoroshi sake with food, dry and smooth. Sushi is fresh and tasty.

Great Sushi, Great Service, Great Atmosphere

By Shelly M |

On a recent visit to SF, we tried this place to satisfy our sushi craving. I really loved the atmosphere. It's small but can accommodate small groups. I had a specific dietary limitation and they were happy to make me some wonderful sushi without rice which was really delicious. Our group tried several types of sashimi and rolls and loved everything. The saki was also amazing. The service was excellent as well. There are so many sushi places in SF but put this one on your list.

Pleasant lunch

By Erik |

I stopped at Sanraku today for lunch, and ate the gyoza, miso soup, and a crunch roll. The staff was very friendly, and I enjoyed the food.

Very nice indeed

By Daniel800 |

We eat here following having read great reviews on Trip Advisor and our meal did not disappoint!! On arrival, the restaurant was extremely busy with all different nationalities which we felt was a very good sign. Food was ordered and within 10-15 minutes, food was on the table piping hot and had been made fresh to order. You could tell the ingredients were fresh given the taste. I would recommend the Tempura Prawns and Vegetables for your starter and I had the Sesame Chicken for my main, both being absolutely superb. However, word of caution - be careful what you order because you will waste food at this restaurant! The portion sizes are massive!! (A good complaint to have I suppose). Consider having just a main, or a starter as your main.

Su-Shi So-So

By Alexander B |

If there was a price for a very average restaurant, this one would probably have the best chance for winning. There was just nothing special about this place – not décor, not variety, not even quality. One thing was higher than expected - the price.

Just ok

By Safari42246214511 |

Food is good but has a lot of room for improvement. Their rolls and Donburi are mediocre.Place is quiet and neat. Price is decent.

Relaxed atmosphere and great sushi

By JaelBR |

The atmosphere of the place was very pleasant, the waiters were very polite and the service was quick. I got a soup and vegetable tempura sushi, and my friends got two different kinds of sushi each. All the food was very tasty and they gave us some fruit with the check. I would definitely repeat and recommend

Superb

By minnesotans4 |

We have eaten at this restaurant every time we visit San Francisco. They do take reservations which I would highly recommend. A person may sit at the counter to watch sushi being prepared. Service was impeccable and friendly. The potstickers reminded us of the ones in Kyoto...absolutely delicious. My udon noodle and beef soup was served boiling hot with flavorful broth and loaded with udon noodles and sliced beef. It was such a large portion that it could be shared. This is now one of my favorite soups. The plum wine was perfect, not too sweet. Highly recommend!

Average sushi

By mgiulieri |

My wife and I had dinner. The food, service, and experience were average I ordered the miso soup—it was ok. We ordered 3 rolls: spider, 704, and crunch. They were ok. Nothing special. We will not return

This is a great little Japanese spot for lunch with bento box specials and good sushi. We did not have to wait for a table for 3 even though they had a good lunch crowd.

Delicious food and nice atmosphere

By leschgk |

Really enjoyed our lunch at Sanraku. The hamachi sushi was delicious. There were so many tempting choices on the menu that it was hard to choose and we were both very pleased with our choices. The calm of the restaurant was very pleasant and very Japanese. We will be sure to eat here again on our next visit to San Francisco.

Awful service

By Balmirals100 |

Although the food was okay, the service was terrible. The food repeatedly did not come and the waitresses were incredibly rude.

fast service, good sashimi

By mcB5985EE |

noisy, cafe type atmosphere with close tables but price a little higher end than the environment would suggest fast service, good sashimi,

Topical and good

By Antho33133 |

The food is great. Fresh and well prepared. Tempuras are “wow”! I had the salmon sashimi with truffle. Very good too. Well it’s a nice and good food place.

Excellent Japanese Restaurant

By geotech522 |

We had lunch and dinner at Sanraku. It is not a very large restaurant and we saw that there was a crowd in front of the restaurant and the wait time was long the first night we were in San Francisco. For lunch the day, we went earlier. We found that the Bento Boxes were an exceptional value at lunch time. We had shumai and gyoza as starters, and California rolls, and Sesame Chicken and Salmon Teriyaki as main entrees for our two Bento Boxes; these came with rice, salad and miso soup. Both Bento Boxes were delicious. At dinner, the menu is a little bit more expensive and we had Salmon Teriyaki and Chicken teriyaki; also very good. As we were staying at Club Wyndham Canterbury, we got a green tea ice cream, too. Lunch is very reasonably priced with dinner somewhat higher priced. Great little Japanese restaurant in SF.

great location with a cozy vibe

By LJKP |

We love Japanese food, Sanraku is a great location with a cozy vibe. Saba (mackerel) sushi, fried oysters were huge and pretty good, gyoza potstickers perfectly tender and delicious, california roll standard. Recommend.

Ok Japanese place

By J1348 |

Food was ok, but not outstanding. Also service could be better: we were only a party of two, but the hot food from the kitchen (salmon and beef teryaki) was not synchronized, which felt a bit strange. Sitting at the counter was nice, as we could watch the chefs preparing the sushi.

Delicious, fresh and great value

By Leerand6 |

This restaurant is all substance and no flash. The sushi is fresh and delicious, the service is great. The eggplant nigiri is outstanding and so is the San Francisco Roll.

Keep your expectations reasonable

By levon i |

I had very high expectations in general regarding the sushi in San Fransisco. I am a tourist and this was my third time in the city. Although the sushi here was good, I would not qualify it as great nor the restaurant as a must. If you want good quality sushi with reasonably fast service with either some sake or craft japanese beer, then this is the place. The ambiance and the sushi isn't flashy nor very creative.

Delicious!

By kathy m |

Whenever I'm visiting this is our go-to place for delicious sushi and shashimi! Love the salmon, love it so much that we really eat too much, but so good. Great miso soup to warm up with, delicious sake, and consistency in all dishes. Can't say enough great, but def make a reservation! They have a second location in the mall, also delicious!

Average

By Erik C |

I'm not sure about why this ranks so well, perhaps because it is in a very tourist-travelled area? The sushi, while good, was nothing terribly special. The service was just fine, but again, nothing to write home about. There are better sushi bars in San Francisco, try going off the beaten path to discover them!

Overpriced and didn't felt welcome

By Vanessa F |

There wasn't a real welcome not even a hallo. The glass of wine 15 Dollar! Didn't order it. The sushi of my husband was good. I had prawns and vegetables, they didn't write that they would be deep-fried. Taste of oil nothing more. My chicken teriyaki was dry and the vegetables with it were two pieces of carottes and brocoli. That wasn't worth 23 dollar. Wouldn't recommend the place.

Very good... and I'm no fan of Japanese food!

By F3011 |

My daughter convinced me to eat here... lucky to get a table... very busy but service very crisp and food very prompt... would me more than happy to go back

Great food

By ushy |

Recommended by our hotel, we were pleasantly surprised by this restaurant We did not have a booking but were quickly seated Plenty to choose from with the food menu and our choices were excellent The place filled up quickly after we arrived Would recommend

Still great place for a meal

By jonsey |

Great meal, haven’t been here since before COVID but same standard and service. Highly recommend the sashimi from here and the sesame chicken

Fastest Dinner Experience of My Life

By David I |

My wife and I went to Sanraku on Sutter Street at about 5 PM today. We were out of there in less than 30 minutes. We ordered the Sushi Entrée combination which consists of Soup, Salad, Sushi and Entrée. The Soup and Salad came out together less than 2 minutes after ordering. The Sushi came out while we were still eating our soup and salad. The entrée came out while we were finishing the sushi. The waitress never asked us how our food was. While the food was good, not great, the fast pace made it a very uncomfortable and a disappointing dinner while on vacation, If you want a rapid fire meal I suggest going, if not go elsewhere. I will not go back there during the balance of our vacation.

Good shushi

By Prawet J |

This restaurant was recommended by a hotel front desk and it is located not far from my friend's hotel and Union Sqaure. The place is quite small and popular at lunch but very efficient and friendky service staff. The fish is fresh and not too expensive. If you are in this area, and want a good Japanese food, I highly recommend the place. Also, the place is very clean.

Another great expierence

By Roger J |

If you want great seafood JAPANESE style this is the place to go. Great experience sat at the bar watching the chiefs. Great expierence.

Good but not exceptional.

By Lauren S |

Seeing that it had a very high rating online, and knowing we were in San Francisco, I expected amazing and innovative sushi for my birthday dinner. While it was solid, there was nothing new, interesting or exceptional about the sushi here. We live in central Texas and have at least 3 restaurants in our town that taste fresher, which came as quite a shock to me. The atmosphere was, again, unexceptional, and the service was moderately poor.

Bad!

By Alexis P |

I’m starting to think some of the reviews on trip advisor are false. This place sucked. The service was bad and the sushi rolls were bad. There were several servers buzzing around who kept asking if we were ready to order. It’s like they wanted to rush us out of there. Then once we got our sushi they didn’t come back to ask us if we needed anything. They never refilled our sodas or checked on us. I could’ve gotten better sushi at a supermarket deli. The crap they served us was tasteless. I ordered the salmon crunchy roll that was supposed to be spicy and it was awful! Not spicy at all and it was like they plopped puréed salmon on top of some rice. I guess they just think that everyone visiting is a tourist anyway and won’t come back so they don’t need to provide good service or good food for the ridiculous price :/

Basic sushi joint

By rokkap |

Sanraku proved a popular, but surprisingly slow sushi joint. While the sushi and sashimi were OK, the painful slowness of the service was bothersome.

Top sushi

By Simone |

One of the best sushi in San Francisco Not wide selection, but top quality Smart and warm staff Fast service

Excellent sushi

By Laura K |

We had a great dinner at this little spot, the chefs selection nigiri appetiser was delicious and so was the udon noodle broth. The service was friendly and quick. I would definitely go back!

Very good

By Traveleator |

We ate here one evening as it was adjacent to our hotel and thoroughly enjoyed the meal. The maki rolls were great and so were the drinks. The service was quite good and the ladies accommodated our special requests. I would recommend Sanruku.

A piece of Japan in San Francisco

By Duca1 |

A very good sushi bar in the heart of San Francisco. Great fish quality and a good selection of sakes. It serves also other plates all good. Very nice also the Ikebana composition near the entrance.

Authentic and quality

By California |

So authentic and yummy. The miso cod bento meal was amazing, like being back in Japan. The menu listing didn’t say how many amazing accompaniments came with it ! Including tempura eggplant, marinated salmon, lotus root, enoki mushrooms, lots of veggies and pickles. Also, the soft shell crab roll was very delicious.

Simple, fast and very good

By Edson K |

Relatively small house, but with great culinary quality. We opted for a tempura udon and a menu with two options (we chose sashimi and grilled salmon), both very good. Fast and attentive service. Value well suited to the experience.

My favorite restaurant in San Francisco!

By The World is My Oyster |

Went there for dinner a few nights ago and still can't stop talking about it. The staff was very friendly, professional, and fast. Our server Ivan went above and beyond to ensure that we had a great dinning experience. The edemame was delicious and very fresh. The Japanese beef soup was absolutely phenomenal with fresh noodles. But the highlight had to be tje dumplings which were the best I've EVER had! Two thumbs way up to Sanraku and it's staff for an amazing service and an outstanding meal. I already can't wait to go back!!!

Great find!

By Jo9876 |

Absolutely delicious sushi, efficient and friendly service - brilliant! Good portion sizes and really high quality ingredients. Super atmosphere.

Really good not fancy

By Roni T |

It is a simple yet very good place to eat best sushi i eat in São Francisco yet I am from Brasil! And I recomend for all!

Good sushi

By eatlocal1ofakind |

The sushi was very good and reasonably priced. First impression is that it is a very traditional sushi bar. We chose the chefs choice. It was delicious. Our only complaint was the women who waited on us was very unhappy and appeared to want to be anywhere but there. Go for the food not the service.

Melt in your mouth Sushi

By TravelOT-Mike |

Sat at the sushi bar this Friday for what turned out to be a delicious dinner. Went with the Sushi deluxe, rainbow roll, and tuna nigiri. Fresh and delightful. Place wasn't crowded or loud, but instead warm and hospitable. Two ladies even ended up randomly becoming friends over conversation at the Sushi bar. That 100 out of 100 Health score ain't nothing to play with either! Will be back for more melt in your mouth Sushi and Sapporo.

Worth the walk from Nob Hill

By Jill D |

We weren't expecting this great of food there when we arrived and we were impressed. The time it took for it to come to our table of five was worth the wait. The Japanese beer was good, too.

Sushi in SF.

By Carl E |

Small sushi place but was tasty and enjoyable. Had the volcano roll and the dynamite roll. Both were good. Also had the tempura appetizer. It was hot and crispy the way it should be. Service was good but a small place and not a lot of room.

Family trip

By Photographer27 |

We went to this restaurant because of the recommends here. We were lucky to get a table without reservation. The Sushi was great the servant was ok. We still had food and got the bill already so we felt a bit like in a fast food restaurant. The prices are quiet high.

Great Japanese Food, friendly family atmosphere

By ChristianeGTE |

Wonderful Sashimi, Ika Yaki, Tempura. Every time we come to San Francisco, we visit and enjoy the food. True Japanese dishes on high level. For more than 20 years we always love to come, also at their San Jose site.

Fantastic sushi

By minnesotans4 |

We hadn't been to this restaurant for several years and this time brought our son and daughter who love sushi. They ordered quite a few items off the menu and thought each one was delicious. We have been to Japan several times and know and appreciate great tasting sushi. This restaurant is rather small so would advise going earlier. Prices were reasonable too.

Great sushi lunch spot

By BFLOMAN |

Stopped by Sanraku on Sutter for lunch and was not disappointed. Bright dining room with good service and good quality sushi was found. If you need a mid day sushi fix check it out.

Great Japanese Restaurant

By Danny W |

The waiting time wasn't too bad for a family of 4. Once we sat down, my family enjoyed our meal. A great place for sushi and teriyaki.

Great service, great quality

By Emily L |

No frills place but great service and great food. We didn’t have a reservation, but got in early enough that they found us a table in a pretty short time. We loved the food and drinks and would definitely recommend!

Fresh sushi - resonable prices - a must visit

By MammaShibs |

On a recent night out with friends, the 5 of us opted to stop into Sanraku for its location to a night out and because of past reviews. We were not disappointed. Everyone who ordered sushi complimented on the artistic presentation and freshness. I opted for the shrimp/veggie tempura rice bowl which had a perfect amount of shrimp and delicious veggies. A high rating as everything, including waitstaff, was great!

Place for Traditional Japanese Food

By Jed B |

Treat yourself to a real Japanese meal. I sat at the bar and had a nice Sapporo Beer to start. Dinner was Grilled Squid, Grilled Mackerel, and assorted pickled “Oshinko”. Much better than Sushi.

Super authentic

By jstaines72 |

We had an excellent experience, the food was exquisite and very authentic. Staff was very friendly and helpful.

Delicious

By Bengi S |

Amazing sushi! Highly recommended. We also enjoyed Miso Soup. Don't forget to try their signiture Volcano Roll!

AMAZING Dinner

By Randa W |

Eating out for dinner with a 1 year old is always hit or miss. We were on our family vacation and had a tired baby in tow and Sanraku ended up being great. They had a side room that appeared to be the family room as everyone seated in there had kids. This made us feel very comfortable taking our time with dinner. Everything we ordered was delicious. Easily the best sushi I’ve ever had. Everything was well seasoned and the waiters were attentive, but not pushy. We made reservations and while there were plenty of tables when we arrived, the restaurant filled up quickly. If you plan on going after 7, I recommend making reservations as well, even during the week.

Fantastic

By B B |

If you like sushi and try to search in San Francisco for the best...you will find many very good places. That said, you owe it to yourself to find Sanraku and even if there is a line, wait long enough to dine here. You will find the staff to be very professional, the Chefs to be highly skilled and the sushi beyond compare. Excellent. It will be on your 'must' list from that point forward!

Very good sushi!

By Silviaoxx |

Sanraku was only two blocks from our hotel so we decided to try it and with great results. The food is very good, it is always crowded so having a reservation would be best but if you don't mind waiting 10 - 15 minutes just go directly.

Not as advertised

By 741haroldp |

Edamame was cold not hot. Stir-fry vegetables were cold and both seemed like a hassle when asked to heat them up. Smallest sushi I have ever seen for the price. $7 plus for two small pieces and I eat sushi four days a week. Service was terrible. Not often do I dispute a charge but I am for this one.

Lovely

By Karen B |

A most excellent, a true hidden gem in SF. Highly recommended. Go early only a few seats. The line is long in the evenings.

No frills Sushi & Sashimi that works!

By SeanTF |

Went on a Monday night. Waited about 10 minutes for a table for 2. Service was on point. Ordered rolls and sashimi and all was fresh and presented attractively. Also, a very good house white wine.

A favorite local sushi spot there for 30 years!

By D i |

I take our son here perhaps once a month for "wagu wasabi Wednesday" as it has very good sushi for the price. Y Yes, there may be others in SF, depending on people's tastes & expectations, but we love its location, walking distance from where he live and many hotels in the Union Square area.

Great sushi

By Sassasan |

There are several kinds of sushi such as Japanese one and Californian one. I love Californian sushi roll, especially rainbow roll here. It’s a great taste.

Bad service, interesting food

By idancanfi |

We ordered a table for 20:30 and waited outside for another 15 min' because "the people sitting at our table didn't get out" as the manager said. Thats a shame (it was cold!). The dishes were original and most of them were pretty tasty. The waitresses are not nice at all, very stressed and not welcoming. Some of the dishes did not arrive until we asked about them.

Just an average Japanese joint with lousy service

By Valerie O |

There are tons of Japanese joints in San Francisco, a few are above par. This one is just par. The first thing which really shocked me was how unfriendly the waitress was: No eye contact, no smile, nothing....a little brutal for a nice lunch break with my son and hubby. The miso soup is, however, excellent! The grilled mackerel is ok, as are the sushis a la carte. Food is fresh and this place is fine if you don't care about human interaction.

Busy place but good sushi

By Maarten V |

When entering without a reservation, ee were told that we had to wait approximately 30 minutes but in reality waiting time was way schorter. The restaurant’s interior is horrible but the food is good and staff is friendlier than the first impression they give.

Best fish

By Ma M |

The sushi is supurb and the fish is excellent. Everything we had was best quality. The only cause that the place does not get five points is due to the waitress who could be more polite

Very disappointing.

By Janet G |

Booked a table for 7 pm. It was not ready. We had to wait for nearly 20 minutes for other diners to finish eating to get our table. From the minute we sat down we were made aware that they wanted our table for another party at 8 pm. Those people arrived and then stood and stared at us making it very uncomfortable for us . While the food was okay the crowded atmosphere was horrible. And having our plates taken away almost while we were still eating was very poor. As was getting the check while we were still deciding whether we wanted anything else to eat. This was supposed to be a celebratory dinner. Sadly it was a just horrible. Won't be back.

Amazing!!!

Friendly service Great food Great restaurant Will surely go back!!! Don't miss out on this Restaurant 😃

Good quality sushi at reasonable prices

By Wayne S |

As the restaurant was close to our hotel, we thought we'd try it out as it always looked busy. The service was quick, all our food was fresh and well prepared. A few specials like fish were excellent and added nicely to the menu selection.

Beyond the sushi, try the Udom noodles.

By Aura H |

I came to San Francisco as a tourist but I definitely was looking for great Udom noodles. I tried a few place but the Nabeyaki noodles here were the best. Service was good and the sushi was also very good.

Wonderful sushi

By Ann M |

We were able to secure 2 seats at the sushi bar by luck as most people appeared to make reservations and were seated fairly quickly. One of the dishes we ordered, was not available and we were asked if we wanted to substitute a different fish. We had asked to see the menu to choose something completely different but somehow communication wasn’t good and it became a yes - no on the other fish so we declined. It took a reasonable amount of time for our two rolls to arrive and both were excellent in taste and texture (I had salmon and avocado — so smooth). But we needed one more roll to round out dinner so placed an order, which then took a very long time to arrive (at least 20-25 minutes) but our waiter came back twice to check. The third time he checked, then disappeared and reappeared with our sushi. It was odd. The sushi itself was 5 stars but the wait for second order was so long I thought to cancel a few times while waiting.

Great Sushi Dinner

By Krychek |

Our family ate here for an early dinner. It was very authentic, and prices were reasonable. We actually sat at the sushi bar and were thus close to the action. It was very full. The sushi was delicious. We would go back!

Wonderful flavours and good value

By Daniel S |

We dropped by without a reservation last night and were after 5 minutes were given a table. Ordered some drinks and shortly after ordered our starters and mains. The food came out gradually and was all delicious. Portion sizes were fairly big as well which I was not expecting. In the end I ended up leaving some amazing sesame chicken as I just had no room left. I would recommend the dinner combination as it's great value for money and covers all the food you might enjoy like sushi and also meat. Overall a lovely meal and attentive staff.

Always good

By tamac9601 |

Return visit for lunch. Had sushi lunch special. Great deal as miso soup and salad are included. Food quality and service here are consistently top notch.

Never disappoints

By needhelp2travel |

Come to this spot every time we visit San Francisco. Very fresh and authentic. Service is good and lunch prices are reasonable. Sashimi was melt in your mouth!

Japanese fare on Sutter Street

By Sarah M |

We looked in the window and saw many people enjoying sushi and other kinds of dishes in close quarters. It was obviously popular so we decided to try it out. My eel over rice dish was beautifully presented. The tofu and seaweed misoshiru soup was pleasantly hot and flavorful. Our beverage of choice was genmai cha.

Great food

By DerinDeniz |

Great Japanese Food for reasonable prices. We visited this place more than 15 years ago first and were happy to see that the atmosphere and food quality have not changed at all. It is not a fancy place. Just expect good Japanese food.

Overrated , awful service and presentation

By Samia H |

Just look at the pictures.. sushis falling appart, presentation awful and they served the hot dish 10minutes before the sushi arrived... would not recommend. 8$+taxes for 6 sushi pieces. Overrated and I don't understand how it's possible that this restaurant is nr. 73.

Best Sushi in Nob Hill

By Brenda P |

I love this Sushi restaurant! I have been coming here for over 10 years and the service and food have consistently been exceptional! The Sushi is always fresh with the rice cooked perfectly! I love the Sesame Chicken Bento Box for Lunch! If you’re looking for good sushi, this is the place!

Hidden Gem

By ShermanSUV |

We found Sanraku by accident while looking for another restaurant in the area. We weren't sure if we'd like it or not but glad we stopped in. Service was quick and waitress was very nice. Extensive menu, average prices for SF area, and quality of food was excellent. If you're in the Union Square area, you may want to think about this place.
