A great choice for Mediterranean Food

By Luv2Fly2Madrid3 |

There are several restaurants in this area with a similar menu and I have tried most of them for lunch. A small group of us ventured out to Sawa recently and were pleasantly surprised with several factors. We were greeted at the door and given a choice as to where we wanted to sit, our server brought water to the table right away with the menus. The selection of dishes was impressive and we were all very pleased with our choices. Great hummus and sandwiches. Generous portions, as well!

Hole in the wall with AWESOME food

By JennyOD |

Shawarmas, kebabs, gyros, grape leaves, tabouli, falafel, hummus, and turkish and greek desserts! Not one bad tasting item on the menu. Perfect for vegans, vegetarians, and GF folks too. Did I mention TURKISH COFFEE!! Seriously needs a new interior makeover but the menu is the bomb. I always wonder why this place is empty? Word must not be out yet.

Quick service, Great food

Tender Chicken Kabab for Dinner!

By MrModu |

We started off with Lemon-Mint which brought back memories of the Souk. We enjoyed the appetite sampler and it was the first time I had warm stuffed grape leaves :) The hummus and taboulah were great. My son gobbled down the Kibbeh and Falafel. We each enjoyed our entrees (Chicken Kabab, Falafel Salad and Beef Shwarma). Loved the Turkish coffee!

Excellent!

Fresh, delicious food, so many healthy options, a great, friendly, reasonably-priced neighborhood place!

Delicious and fresh

My family and i eat here at least once a week because the food here is delicious and fresh and tge staff very friendly. The jasmine tea, the spicy potatoes, the lentil soup, the falafel wrap, the dessert-all delicious!! Abdul is so attentive, he makes us feel like family when we go.

Great food

Don't look for fancy. Place is dated and simple. But the food was worth it! Just great and well-balanced mediterranean dishes.

Very good food

By Traveler mom |

I like the food at this restaurant. I haven’t been there for a year because it smelled funny before ( like molds). We went today to give it another try, and I found out that the place looks much better than before. Very clean, and nice. It is not crowded at all. Food is good. The owner is friendly. It is great for fast lunch. I ordered one sampler and I was surprised that unlikely other restaurants, this plate had just one piece of falafel. Their hummus is so tasty. There are a lot of vegetarian options. Highly recommended.

Excellent Food, Reasonable Prices, and Friendly Staff

By Crazy4Bacon |

Our waitress was very welcoming and sweet. She promptly took our order, and it took a very short time for her to bring us our food. The owner even came out and greeted us. One of the best things about Sawa is the menu. Each entree is marked depending on if it is dairy free, gluten free, or vegan. Also, the food is high quality. The beef that they use is filet, and it is very well seasoned and tender. Their lamb shank in yogurt sauce (which is a special item) is also one of the best things they cook. All the food I’ve had there is delicious, so I definitely suggest trying it!

Finest Mediterranean food in our area!

By christyristy |

I had head that Sawa was good from several friends. Since moving from Michigan, my husband and I hadn't found a really good Mediterranean restaurant. Now we have. This place is FANTASTIC! Everything we ate was DELICIOUS! It's so much better than any of the other places around, there is no comparison. I'm so glad we finally tried Sawa. We will be eating here a lot!

nice little place that you should try!

By Blake E |

We went here for dinner one night, to try it out after hearing some good reports from others. We had a hummus appetizer and it was excellent. They also brought us another dish, but i dont remember the name. Garbanzo beans with cilantro and some other seasonings cooked similar to a hush-puppy, or small muffin. (falafel?) I had the gyro, and it was excellent. it had slightly to much sauce on it, but that's a matter of opinion. They use pickles instead of cucumber, which was different. we also tried an eggplant dish called Moussaka. It was cooked well, but a little on the sweet side for my tastebuds. This may be how its supposed to be, so i cannot say for sure. They seemed to only have 1 waiter on staff, so he is stretched pretty thin, but was always hustling to get things done. The owner did come out and chat with us to get feedback and suggest things to try for our next trip.

Outstanding vegan options and they accommodated me with my soy allergy.

By Cheryl J |

Amazing food, I have a soy allergy and the owner made sure that my food was cooked in pure extra virgin olive oil. I bought two vegan dishes (the rice with almonds, walnuts and raisins and the eggplant, chickpeas and rice). As a side I purchased the grape leaves. Everything was so flavorful, delicious and fresh. I highly recommend Sawa, this will certainly be a go to for me, as I have not been able to eat at most restaurants in the Clear Lake region due to my soy allergy.

Great Food, Friendly Service

By Julie C |

The food is fresh, the portions ample, the staff is friendly, and the price is right. The kabobs dinner can easily feed two, including sharing the dinner salad. Or eat half and take a nice lunch to work the next day. And save room for dessert, the cake and pudding are both totally awesome. Ula is a nice hostess and goes out of her way to make sure you enjoy your meal. Dine in or take out, food is fresh and delicious!

Lunch

Tasty lunch items but I believe it is the same for dinner. Huge portions and the chicken kabob was perfect. Salad was great and baba Ganoush was wonderful. Will try again. Spotty service but friendly

Enjoyed chicken Shwarmas tonight along with some warm fuul. Everything was great as usual. Friendly service and clean tables.

Mediocre

By Mike O |

I had the falafel and a gyro. Honestly, I was just expecting better based on the reviews I read. I got there shortly after 5:00pm and there were only 2 other people in the place. The server was extremely friendly. The falafel was pretty good but I've had better from a food truck. The gyro was interesting. It appeared to have processed/pressed meat strips. It also had pickles on it which I've never seen...not saying that's a bad thing if you like pickles I guess but I've never seen that, I picked them off. The tzatziki sauce was pretty good and the pita bread was warm and soft. All in all it wasn't bad, just not what I was hoping for.

Great Mediterranean Food Find!

By Mhcole17 |

We so glad to find a return trip worthy Mediterranean Restaurant on our side of town. It's a very clean, quiet and nicely decorated restaurant that serves quality fresh Mediterranean fare. We had the beef shawarma and gyro with generous appetizers of hummus, yogurt with cucumbers, baba ghannouj. The pita bread was excellent. So glad to find this gem!

Great experience

My wife and I love this place. The family is friendly and the food is delicious!! You will not be disappointed.

Delicious Hidden Gem

By thronumgratiae |

The curb appeal hides an incredible, independent Mediterranean restaurant. The food was delicious and the menu accommodated Gluten Free, Dairy Free, and Vegan eaters. Portions were good sized and no one left hungry. We'll be back soon!

Jordanian Lamb

By BevoBurn96 |

Owner offered sample of their special leg of lamb available only on Fridays. My family doesn't usually care for lamb, but the only thing left on the plate was the bone and some of the leftover yogurt sauce. This place has amazing food!

Real Middle Eastern Food

By jennifercalaway |

Sawa is an excellent place to eat lunch or dinner. Pleasant staff and great food make your dinning experience unique. Try the tea spiced with no other than sage. The gyros are delicious, as well as, the falafel salad. The good food and atmosphere made us feel like we were dinning abroad, not in Houston. We had a group of 6. Not a problem on Sunday noon.

I get takeout here every week. So fresh, so healthy, so delicious, so affordable.

Clean and quiet. Relaxing. Great staff. Family owned. Has been around for a long time. Love the freshness of the food. Has their own fresh herb garden. The Mint Lemonade is awesome.

"GLAD WE FOUND THIS"

By Heat1907 |

Oh my!!! This restaurant is good. It was so delicious we ate here two evenings in a row. The Hummus, Falafel, and fresh Veggies and Olive mix are perfect. The hummus is some of the best I have had; perfectly seasoned with the right amount of garlic and lemon. We have loved the Greek Salad, Falafel Salad, Moussaka and Sampler Combo Platter. I highly recommend the Mint Lemonade Smoothie to drink; absolutely DELICIOUS!! Rice Pudding for dessert was superb. They are very gluten-free helpful. The owner said he can make anything gluten free. He served my hummus with cucumber slices. The only recommendation I would suggest is that they serve lamb more frequently than just Fridays.

Great food!

By Royan17200 |

Freshly prepared, delicious food, fantastic salads and kebabs, homemade baclava. Friendly, welcoming owner and staff, very reasonable prices, what more could you ask? Always options for gluten and dairy free, vegan, and different menu combinations. We eat there once or twice a week, and have enjoyed everything we ordered.

A New Gem in Clear Lake, TX

By TXFROMWI |

Sawa has been open less than a week and I am thrilled to report that this is great addition to the neighborhood. My wife, daughter (13yrs old) and myself had the following: Sampler Combo Platter - tabouli, hummus, kibbeh, grape leaves, falafel and pita bread. Musaka. Kofta Kabab. Ciku Stir Fry. Rice Pudding. Baklava. 3 waters, which were delivered as Ozarka bottles and ice. Total = $50.18. We sampled the mint lemonade smoothie, which was made to order with fresh mint leaves - you can tell by the taste. The sample was large enough that we did not need to purchase one! Everything was excellent and things like hummus and grape leaves that are routinely terrible at other locations were delightful here. Each item was highly flavorful and very distinct in taste from every other item. The baklava, which in so many places is dripping in honey and too sweet, was flavorful from the nuts with just a touch of sweet. A real taste delight! We each tried everything and we all liked everything with only one exception. That exception was myself and the rice pudding, I have encountered this particular flavor before and while my wife and daughter loved it, I just don't like the flavor that comes from Orange Blossom Water. So it's not you, it's me.... Decor was very nicely done and very pleasant. The original punched tin ceiling has been retained and the interior has been completely re-done, taking the ornate, decorative ceiling theme throughout the restaurant. The feel is light, airy and very well dehumidified and cooled. Excellent service today as from Rama, a delightful, entertaining and talkative young woman. Considering that Sawa has only been open a few days, customer volume was good. I would anticipate customer volume to increase as word gets out. Sawa is a true find and we will most decidedly be back.

Surprisingly Good

By Zola C |

I ordered a falafel sandwich and hummus. My husband had the gyro. It was 1:00 pm on Saturday and we were the only ones in the restaurant. The waitress was friendly and accommodating. The food was well prepared and nicely presented. The pita for the hummus was warm and the sandwiches were large. I would return with pleasure. Others did begin to drift in and the one waitress was not attentive at that point.

Great Neighborhood Restaurant

By ZanerHouston_Texas |

My wife and I have eaten at this restaurant twice, once dine in and once take out. The food is very good. The lamb sandwich is excellent as are the hummus and baba ganouj. The service is very friendly, and the prices are more than reasonable for the quality. I highly recommend this restaurant if you are in the Clear Lake City area.

Went for a lunch after visiting space center Houston. Everything was flavorful and staff was courteous.

very good food

By tleeEvans |

Food is very good, I had the gyro with hummus and my husband had the greek salad and the soup. Salad was very large with fresh ingredients. Soup was very good and served hot, not cool like some places. The gyro had lots of meat and fresh vegetable. Soft pita bread. Hummus was fresh and the pita warm and soft. Will go back

New Mediterranean in Clear Lake City

By BevoBurn96 |

A new mediterranean restaurant in Clear Lake City in an old building. It's family run and the food is delicious. We tried a wide range of the menu and were pleased with everything. The baba ganoush was well done and not bitter at all. Homemade baklava and sage tea were great! Highly recommend the shawarmas. The kabob plate was big enough for two to share. It came with some okra stewed with tomatoes which was the best I've ever had. The owner is especially helpful for those with food allergies. Everything on the menu is labeled so typical food allergies can be avoided when ordering.

No Service for Us for Some Reason

By dirion |

On our way from Galveston to Dallas we stopped at Sawa based on the reviews and the fact that they have gluten free options. We were told to find our own seats. There was a table of 8 and a table of 4 previously seated. We thought maybe there was just one wait person so we patiently waited for 10 minutes while the young man who greeted us came and went with food for the table of 8 and took the check from the table of 4. Another group came in, sat on their own and the young man gave them menus! (We still had no menus.) At this point my husband and I agreed we would give him five more minutes to bring us menus and speak to us. At minute four, two more groups came in and when he brought one of these tables menus, a lady at the table pointed to us and said, “I believe those people were here before us.” He didn’t seem to care. We got up to leave and he said nothing at all. We have no idea why since we waited patiently for menus and a greeting for 15 minutes!

Very tasty food. Hidden gem!

By Jen T |

Went to Sawa based on reviews and the gluten free and dairy free menu alerts. We were very impressed with the food! Super appealing presentation. Lots of colorful veggies used. Quite large portions at a reasonable price. You have to try the garlic sauce (thoum). It’s a secret family recipe and deservedly so!! They were very careful to address our food allergies so defiant recommend for other sensitives!

Amazing doesn't even begin to describe Sawa!!!

By Kyle M |

Incredible food and service. My wife and I wandered through the menu and tried several things, all of which exceeded our expectations! The owner came and and explained what we weren't familiar with and our waiter was top notch too. This place is a must hit for sure, we will be back soon!!!

Suprisingly good Med cuisine

By kay-cee-1138 |

The Sawa restaurant is relatively new (Google Earth still labels its building as "Colosseum Italian", which is the long-gone previous eatery's name), but it is a positive addition to the Clear Lake dining scene. The waitress was very friendly and quite helpful in guiding us through the menu. We chose the beef kabobs and the chicken kabobs. They were brought out in good time, and both were excellent. The dinners were ample and came with tasty green salads as well. The lentil soup was spiced nicely. While we were there, there was a constant stream of folks picking up their to-go orders (which is nice to know for the future). There's plenty of parking around the side and back of the building. The interior decoration is indeed noticeably sparse, but that's not important -- I go to a place for its food and service, not for the pictures on its walls. Dinner for two with appetizer came out to about $38, before tax and tips. Quite reasonable, we thought. We'll look forward to stopping by Sawa again soon!

Sometimes there aren't enough stars to rate

By Arthur G |

The Sawa Mediterranean Restaurant only opened recently and deserves a lot of publicity. This restaurant, family-owned and operated, represents the best of the food served at Grecian tavernas. The appetizers and entrees are prepared to order, so if you are accustomed to fast-food restaurants, the Sawa is a good place to slow down and enjoy your meal. It was not easy for us to choose, because we are familiar with most of the menu offerings and they all sounded good. We started with a beverage, the mint lemonade. It would be worth a visit to Sawa just for that. We also tried the kibbeh, a real treat, and the tzatziki (called cucumber and joghurt on the Sawa menu), followed by a Greek salad and gyros. Each dish was the best we'd ever eaten, including in Greece and in American Middle Eastern restaurants. The food is definitely worth the wait, which is actually not so long for freshly prepared selections. Prices are reasonable and the service is outstanding. I believe the Sawa restaurant is destined to become one of the most popular in the Clear Lake City/Webster area and beyond. We intend to become regular patrons there.

Awesome

Staff is awesome and so accommodating. Food is excellent. Best homemade humus ever. Everything I have had in this restaurant has been extremely tasty and makes me want to get it again. Kudos to them. Truly a hidden gem.

Excellent Mediterranean grill in Clear Lake City!

By texag80 |

My wife and I stopped in Sawa Mediterranean grill for the first time on this Monday evening! My wife ordered the sampler platter and I ordered the two grilled chicken kabobs on skewers to share. The sampler platter comes with hummus, kebbah, rolled grape leaves, falafel. The chicken kabob comes with two large skewers loaded with grilled chicken and a salad. Both were delicious and would highly recommend Sawa for a Mediterranean treat!

First real experience with Mediterranean food

By HTownReviewer |

My first real experience with this kind of food. At around 6:46 p.m. on a Saturday evening we were the only table there. A few more tables and a few to-go orders came in while we were there. Young server was a bit spotty, but very friendly and helpful in explaining what things were since the menu only has names and no explanation. We started with kibbeh, It was good. Can't say I've ever had anything like it but it was flavorful and good with or without the dip. We ordered three entrees. Salads came out beforehand and were good. I had the stir fry with beef. Very good and a large portion. Another had the chicken kabob, which looked excellent and was a lot of food, and came with huge skewers. More of a novelty, the chicken chunks were, in fact, big. Chicken was tender and seasoned well and flavorful. Another had Kofta Kabab. Presentation was very plain and just didn't look as great as the other dishes. Was ok. Not my thing so much. Prices seemed a bit high but you got a lot of food. Friendly service, but service in general needs a step up. I'm sure that will come with time. Gluten Free fans will enjoy this place. Lots of choices. And people wanting to sample many things should start with the Sampler Combo Platter.
